ALBERT SNODGRASS
Well I’ll be dammed, those bloody fools at the flipping hospital have only sodding gone and diagnosed me of having a mild case of blinking tourettes. Allegations of wide spread match fixing amongst the top tennis players. Looks like they’ve all been practising their backhanders. I haven’t owned a watch for I don’t know how long. “Any two-watt bulbs?” “For what?” “That’ll do. I’ll take two.” “Two what?” “I thought you didn’t have any.” “Any what?” “Yes, please.” The waiter came up to my table and said, “Can I take your order?” I said, “Sure.” “Thanks. I’m just really hungry,” he added. My wife’s cooking is incredible. With a silent ‘cr’. New film to be made about the tennis match rigging scandal. Only available on Netfix. I went to a fancy dress competition before dressed as Winston Churchill. I thought my costume was great, I had the hat, the suit, the bow tie, everything! When I asked them whether I’d won, they said I was close, but no cigar. I’ve just come off the phone with the spiritual leader of Tibet. He sent me a large goat with a long neck. Turns out I phoned Dial- a- llama. I had my sat nav stolen the other night. The worst thing was that I could hear the bloody thing giving him an escape route.

Doncaster Racecourse is set to play host to Evergreen popstar Will Young following an afternoon of racing this summer. The former Pop Idol winner will be the first act to perform as part of this year’s Music Live series on Saturday, 14 May following a packed seven race card at the Town Moor venue. The Leave Right Now singer who was crowned Pop Idol champion in 2002, went on to top the charts with his debut album From Now On, selling more than 180,000 copies in the first week. One year on from his Pop Idol triumph, he was nominated for three Brit awards, best pop act, best British breakthrough act and best single for Evergreen. The singer will also perform a raft of songs from his current album, 85% Proof, which is his fourth to reach number one. Last year the racecourse played host to a string of top bands – including ska band Madness, reggae rockers UB40 and New Romantic super-group Spandau Ballet - who entertained thousands of music lovers with their iconic hits. Now Will Young will kick off the 2016 Music Live shows, with Simply Red and Level 42 also due to perform at the racecourse later this year. Kieron Gallagher, executive director at Doncaster Racecourse, said: “Will Young captured the hearts of the nation when he was crowned Pop Idol champion in 2002 and has continued to entertain the British public since with hits including All Time Love. “He will kick start what is set to be a great summer of racing and music to be enjoyed by friends, family and colleagues alike. “We have a fantastic line up of musical

SHEFFIELD GENERAL CEMETERY SECURES NATIONAL LOTTERY INVESTMENT
Sheffield City Council could be awarded up to £4million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery Fund to complete major restoration work to the Sheffield General Cemetery, it was announced this week. Initially the council’s Parks and Countryside service will receive development funding of £429,000 to progress their plans for the cemetery over the next two years, and then apply for the full grant in 2018. The overall aim of the project is to transform the site into a
well-used heritage and wildlife park that will be enjoyed and explored by people of all ages and interests. This will include sympathetic restoration of existing features, such as the collapsing catacombs, ensuring structures throughout are safe and enhancing habitats to attract more wildlife. The project will also play a big part in strengthening the Outdoor City’s links from the centre to the Peak District for walkers, runners and cyclists. The Sheffield General
Cemetery opened in 1836 as a response to overcrowding and poor conditions in Sheffield’s churchyards. It was one of the earliest commercial cemeteries of its kind in the UK, conceived at a time when Sheffield was at the cutting-edge of cultural reform and technical innovation. The Grade II*(star) registered park is one of the city’s finest historical assets and is home to 10 listed structures/ buildings including catacombs, monuments, gateways, the Non-Conformist Chapel, the Anglican Chapel and the
co-writer of the first rule book, his funeral procession in 1885 saw the roads lined with several thousand mourners. Whether it’s a gentle stroll, a picnic, bird spotting, a history tour, a lunchtime run or ride out to the Peaks, the plans for the new improved Sheffield General Cemetery Community Park will make it a great host for people of all ages to fulfil their Outdoor City pursuits. The Sheffield General Cemetery is bordered by Cemetery Road, Montague Street, Stalker Walk and the Porter Brook, it is open to the public at all times.
Gatehouse lodge. The cemetery charts the fascinating history of the city’s growth, through those who are buried there, such as Mark Firth (1880) the highly successful Sheffield Industrialist, benefactor of Firth Park and founder of The University of Sheffield; George Bassett (1886) founder of Bassett’s Sweets; and the Cole Brothers, owners of the well-known Sheffield store. Several members of the world’s first football club, Sheffield FC are also buried there including William Prest

The fire service attended the scene after they were made aware of the fire. Adrian Brady, Ian Fletcher, Mick Hague and Paul Knowles work for Sheffield City Council’s contractor Amey, and were on Totley Brook Close when they spotted smoke coming from a nearby house. Ian, from Chapeltown, said: “I was working high on one of the nearby street lights when I spotted smoke coming from the house. We called the fire brigade and rushed over to the house, where an elderly gentleman was trying to get out of his home surrounded by black smoke. We managed to move him away from the house to safety and a few minutes later the house went up in flames. “The gentleman was obviously in shock so the team stayed with him until the fire brigade arrived.”

FLEXIBLE WORKING - THE NEW RULES From June 30th this year, anyone who has been with the same employer for at least 26 weeks is legally entitled to make a written or verbal request for flexible working hours. For many who are aged 50 and over and who are juggling work, family and caring commitments this is a welcome move forward. According to a national survey workers over the age of 55 were the least likely to have submitted a flexible working request. Here are a few things to be aware of if you are thinking of applying for flexible working: Convincing your employer - formally requesting flexible working hours usually means more time working from home and less time in the office which, while convenient for you may not be so helpful for your employer. Stating your case - to boost your chances of having your flexible working request approved, it’s important to plan what and
where the positives lie for your employer. Make a plan – outline a proposed schedule of work with allotted tasks and clearly explaining to your employer the advantages of working from home or changing your current contracted hours. Keeping on track – keeping a record of working hours and accountability for tasks completed becomes vital if you’re requesting to work from home. Communicate – keeping in touch via phone or email is essential to working relationships. Create a workspace that’s away from distractions if possible and if not find a place that’s comfortable to work in. Work smart – take opportunities to fill waiting periods – if you’re taking your parent to hospital or GP appointments – with email conversation can help you to keep on top of admin while leaving longer periods of time free for onerous tasks. Collaboration - using software and online applications specifically designed for file
OVER 2 YOU SECRET EGYPT Over2You is an innovative project that works with health and care services and the people who access them to gather feedback and help shape the way that services are provided in the future. Over2You aims to improve people’s expectations of health and care providers and give customers a real voice in driving up the quality of services. Following a successful bid to the Department of Health for funding for the project, South Yorkshire Housing Association has joined forces with Gentoo Group and St Vincent’s Housing Association to form a three year partnership that will complete in 2017. The project will cover the Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Bolton, Rochdale and Sunderland areas. Over2You has been recruiting volunteers with experience of accessing health and social care services to become Quality Assessors. They provide training and mentoring support to volunteers to undertake Quality Inspections of services in their area and find out exactly what great health and social care services look like to the people who access them. The feedback from Quality Inspections will provide a Quality Insight Report for the service provider to help them develop their services. The project will measure the impact of the feedback through return visits to services and customer focus groups. In addition Over2You will be running information sessions, led by people who access health and care services, that focus on self and peer advocacy, raise awareness of what fantastic care looks like and offer advice for people on what to do if their provider isn’t up to scratch. For more information contact Over2You: SYHA - 01142 702648 Website: www.over2you.org.uk/.
Should we beware the mummy’s curse? Were the Egyptians obsessed with death? Did aliens build the pyramids? The Secret Egypt exhibition at Weston Park Museum will challenge some of the enduring myths about ancient Egypt perpetuated through films, books and other popular media. Bringing together 150 objects from animal and human mummies to ceramics and jewellery, the exhibition will invite visitors to explore a range of fascinating archaeological evidence to revaluate what they understand about this remarkable civilisation. This touring exhibition from the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, loaned by Birmingham Museums Trust on behalf of Birmingham City Council will at the museum until Sunday 10th April 2016.
sharing and working on team projects such as Google Drive or Dropbox may help. Depending on company policy you may be able to ask your IT department to install the company’s drives on your personal computer to make file access from home much easier. Flexibility - asking an employer for flexible working hours is all well and good as long as you’re prepared to be flexible as well. If you want to fit your job around child and elderly care this might mean working unsociable hours – early in the morning or evenings – in order to keep up with your workload. Should I stay or should I go? If you feel your caring commitments are encroaching on work hours you may need to make the difficult decision between continuing on in your career or leaving work to provide care. Should you find you’re spending over 35 hours caring and you’ve given up your job in order to do so you should be able to apply for Carer’s Allowance. If you’re struggling to cope with the demands of work and care it may be worth making a flexible working request to help relieve the stress of continually looking after everyone else’s needs rather than focusing on your own. More information on how to apply for flexible working can be found on the ACAS website.

Burns Night ENGLISH V SCOTTISH MUSIC
Dusk Till Dawn A night of extreme ghost hunting awaits you at the old Abandoned Cotton Mill in Chesterfield. This unique and terrifying location - exclusive to Dusk Till Dawn Events is set over 3 floor levels and is 90,000 square metres in size. Join us for a night at this desolate old Mill - a place that we firmly believe is like nothing you may have ever encountered before! There are many areas and buildings to explore at this location which are perfect for a night of scary ghost hunting - including a room known as the Orange room - where unexplainable cold spots and freezing temperature changes can be felt along with an eerie attic room that we found to be very disturbing and menacing upon our first initial visit - even during day time hours! With a maze of corridors and stairways, disorientating nooks and crannies this ominous historical Mill is just waiting for you to come along during nightfall to discover its hidden past. This location has a very daunting feel to it which is unnerving to say the least!

CHRIS LEE PREPARES FOR 96 MILE TREK OVER THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CANCER CHARITY IN MEMORY OF FELLOW STEELERS FAN Unconventional sports fan, Christopher, who as well as following ice hockey, enjoys pole fitness and aerial arts in his spare time, will step out with his best friend Mike on the 19th March to take in the scenic route of the West Highland Way over a challenging 5 days. After seeing several of his family and friends fight cancer, Chris is hoping to raise over £500 to support ongoing research, treatment and care at Weston Park Hospital. Chris said, “Scotland is one of my favourite places in the UK, especially around Loch Ness and Fort William where the walk concludes. I know this is going to be a true test of endurance even for me- although I’m quite active and have done long distance walks before.” “Weston Park Hospital showed unwavering support to a fellow Steeler’s fan, 21 year old, Amy Usher who sadly lost her battle with cancer last March. The
day my walk begins will be a poignant day as it will be exactly 1 year on from the day Amy sadly lost her battle.” “In Amy’s memory, I hope to complete this walking challenge and make a difference to the vital and impressive facility that provides support to so many cancer patients across South Yorkshire and beyond.” Chris’s 96 mile walk will take him through some of the most scenic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, encompassing Mugdock Country Park, Loch Lomund as we’ll as climbing the well-known Devils staircase. “Unfortunately most of us have experienced cancer in our lives, whether directly or through a loved one. The very wonderful and courageous Amy Usher was very brave and went above and beyond; and if I can achieve even a quarter of what she managed I would be very proud.” Steelers fan Amy Usher was diagnosed with a rare form of throat cancer in 2013 and received treatment at Weston Park Hospital. Despite the hospital’s best efforts and expertise, Amy sadly lost her fight with cancer in March 2015. Throughout her treatment, Amy and her older sister, Beth, became familiar faces at the Steelers games, with both players and staff at the local club showing their utmost support to the family during such a difficult time. During 2016, the cancer charity is encouraging those thinking of taking on an active challenge to join Team Weston Park and run, ride or walk to raise funds to support the work of Weston Park Hospital.
To support Chris’s walk visit his JustGiving page at: https://www. justgiving.com/CHR15-LEE To find out more about joining the cancer charity’s dedicated ‘& Raise’ clubs and for tips to get fit during 2016 visit the website at: www.wphcancercharity.org.uk
THREE TUNS CROWNED CAMRA PUB OF THE MONTH Sheffield Campaign For Real Ale has voted The Three Tuns on Silver Street Head as January Pub Of The Month. A good choice of cask ales, top quality food and a friendly atmosphere all proved popular with local drinkers. The unusual shape of the pub and it’s varied mix of customers were also factors in the win. A packed evening saw the presentation of the award accompanied by a free buffet.

FOR BATTER OR WORSE February used to be best known for the romance of Valentine’s Day, and the glamour of film awards season – but not anymore, as Sunday 7 February sees the exciting return of National Yorkshire Pudding Day! To make this special occasion, the humble Yorkshire pudding, which has graced the nation’s Sunday roasts for generations, is now turning its hand to something extra special. Aunt Bessie’s, the nation’s number one Yorkshire pudding maker, is offering Britain’s most avid Yorkshire pudding fans (who are about to enter marital bliss) a wedding cake with a difference... The master chefs at Aunt Bessie’s will lovingly create a three tiered wedding cake made entirely out of their signature Yorkshire puds. The aptly named ‘Yorkshire pudding wedding cake’ will be served up along with a delicious gravy fountain. The first of its kind, no doubt wedding guests will be blown away by this amazing culinary delight. If you’re a Yorkshire pudding devotee and would love the chance to say ‘I do’ to the opportunity of the Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire pudding wedding cake at your wedding, then get in touch via Twitter @AuntBessies or pop an email to auntbessies@stripecommunications.com.

SHEFFIELD INDIE HEROES RETURN FOR ANNIVERSARY SHOW Preview: Milburn, 30/04/16, O2 Academy Sheffield By Kt Evans
So, to 30th April and 1st May 2016. O2 Academy Sheffield. We would love to sit here and tell you that we know exactly what will happen, but frankly, we don’t. Whether we are to hear brand new material (if any has been written at all) or simply a selection of old-time classics remains to be seen, however you can rest assured that you’re going to find us slap bang at the front of the stage. Because this, ladies and gents, is exactly why Sheffield music scene is so bloody exciting.
They’re back...or are they??? The Steel city’s biggest cult band, well...probably ever, Milburn have recently announced that they are to perform two mighty headline shows at Sheffield’s O2 Academy. What does this mean? Are Milburn reforming? Does this mean that the boys are back in the studio recording new material? There are so many unanswered questions and such little Tickets go on sale Friday 29th January. information to give, however what can be confirmed is these two stand alone shows on Check the website www.o2academysheffield. co.uk for all the information. 30th April and 1st May are simply ones we most certainly cannot miss. Milburn. A band who are highly regarded as kick starting Sheffield’s modern music scene. Paving the way for the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Reverend and The Makers to name but a few, the four piece re-established these seven hills as the central hub for home-grown musicians across the UK. In 2006, Milburn released their debut album, “Well Well Well” through Mercury Records which caused a massive stir throughout the underground scene. With singles to include “Send In The Boys,” “Cheshire Cat Smile” and “What You Could Have Won,” the sixteen track record brought gritty baselines and raw lyrics right back into the mix. This was proceeded by album number two, “These Are The Facts,” which as it stands, was the bands very last release to date. So... what next?? Are we allowed to get excited about a brand new album yet? Who the hell knows... Since the band parted ways almost eight years ago, Milburn members have gone onto delve into separate side projects. Guitarist Louis Carnell joined Lords Of Flatbrush with former Arctic Monkeys bassist Andy Nicholson along with Looking back at Sheffield vocalist Steve Edwards, along some of Rock’s definitive moments with Tom Rowley and Joe Green both joining with John Webster local group Dead Sons. Vocalist Joe Carnell established his own group, The Book Club which reached commercial success throughout the UK, however has not been active for a number of years. Malpractice – Dr. Feelgood

Canvey Island rock and rollers Dr. Feelgood, released their second album Malpractice, in 1975. The surly quartet featured; the intense presence and rough vocals of Lee Brilleaux; the thrumming bass of John B Sparks; John ‘The Big Figure’ Martin on drums, and the distinctive choppy guitar playing of the legendary Wilko Johnson. Dr. Feelgood’s sound is tight and stripped down, not a million miles away from the Mersey beat. It’s a boisterous, no-nonsense record that’s delivered with menacing brilliance. The whiskey-soaked lyrics of the album, penned mostly by Johnson are focused, it would seem, around a volatile, love-hate relationship. It’s an eleven track record, that kicks off with a cover of Bo Diddley’s I Can Tell. Back In The Night, is the stand-out track on the album; It’s a bass driven, catchy song that shows off Brilleaux’s harmonica talent and Johnson’s totally intoxicating guitar playing. Watch Your Step, is a magnificent track, reminiscent of I Feel Fine by The Beatles. Don’t Let Your Daddy Know, includes an outrageous harmonica solo, whilst Riot In Cell Block Number Nine sounds like it could have been an Elvis Presley hit. The final track, You Shouldn’t Call The Doctor (If You Can’t Afford The Bills), is an up-tempo finale with a mind blowing Johnson guitar solo that strangles every last tune out of his guitar. Dr. Feelgood didn’t achieve the level of commercial success that they deserved. They did however, attain a die-hard cult following and Malpractice is amongst the best of the band’s work. They were a massive influence on The Clash and The Jam, were integral to the British punk scene that was soon to emerge and are without doubt one of the most underrated bands this country has ever produced.
SUPERSTAR BRITISH SONGSTRESS TO PLAY SHEFFIELD ARENA Preview: Ellie Goulding, 12/03/16, Sheffield Arena By Kt Evans
British songstress and BFF to Taylor Swift, the sensational Ellie Goulding is to perform at Sheffield’s Arena on 12th March 2016. Having shot to fame in 2010 by being crowned the BBC Critics Choice winner, the twenty nine year old has since become one of the most recognisable voices on the international music scene. Kick starting her career in 2010, Ellie Goulding has gone on to reach stratospheric heights. Her debut single, “Starry Eyes” well and truly kick started her massive musical journey, which featured on the number one album “Lights.” This record sold over 850,000 copies in the UK alone, with further single “Your Song,” (the classic Elton John original) debuting at number two on the US Billboard 200 in November 2010. O’h and did we mention in April 2011, the star also sung at no other than Prince William and Kate’s wedding...crickey! In 2012, Ellie’s second studio album, “Halcyon” flew in at number two on the UK album charts, however after a staggering 65 weeks, it managed to hit the number one position. The album also gained international recognition by charting within the top ten on the US Billboard 200. Singles from this album and unquestionable dance floor fillers included “Anything Could Happen” and “Burn,” which became Ellie’s very first number one hit. Quickly following this, in 2014 Ellie received the BRIT award for “British Female Solo Artist,” which well and truly safeguarded the star as one of the
finest voices to emerge out of the UK. Fast forward eighteen months and Goulding is back with her most recent record, “Delirium” which was released on 6th November 2015. With hits to include “Love Me Like You Do” from the raunchy Fifty Shades Of Gray, alongside lead single “On My Mind,” this album is by far the singer songwriters most accomplished record to date. With a host of musical influences to include Bjork, Joni Mitchell, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Florence and the Machine, Beyonce and Lauryn Hill, Ellie Goulding’s unique husky vocals and beautifully crafted lyric ability ensure she remains at the very top of her game. Ellie Goulding will be performing at Sheffield’s Arena on 12th March 2016. Support is from the super smooth John Newman. Tickets are on sale now through www.sheffieldarena.co.uk and start from £38.50. Doors 7.30pm. Please see the website for full terms and conditions.

FANCY A BIT OF DIY? JAM CAMS Thirty years ago, if you were feeling a bit cash-strapped, you didn’t need to pay a garage to service your car. Instead you could invest the money you would have spent on a Haynes manual and a socket set. A few hours and a bit of cursing later and you’d have done the job yourself. How things appear to have changed. It’s a frequently repeated mantra that cars are now so mechanically complicated it’s impossible for all but a qualified technician to work on them. With hard-up owners increasingly reluctant to spend money on servicing, car care is falling by the wayside to the point that the AA says half of the 3.4 million call-outs it attends annually are caused by poor maintenance. But drivers who can’t afford regular servicing at a garage, or even want to attempt it themselves as a hobby, shouldn’t be put off, according to the AA’s patrolman of the year, Keith Miller: “The fundamentals of looking after an internal combustion engine haven’t changed over the years, so it’s actually a bit of a myth that you can’t service a modern car yourself,” he says. “I think it’s a generational thing. Younger people are used to having obsolescence built into things. They use something until it breaks and then throw it away and buy a newer, better version. Servicing something is alien to them.” Haynes manuals have been the bible of the car DIYer for the past half century. Matthew Minter, the company’s motor trade editorial director, says: “Peak sales for us are when a car is between four and seven years old.” Haynes is very cagey about sales figures for its motor manuals and has diversified into handbooks covering areas as diverse as sexual health and the saxophone, which implies the DIY market isn’t what it once was. But Haynes still does manuals for cars, even those released recently, and servicing them isn’t that difficult. Miller adds: “Cars are actually more fixable at the roadside now. A lot of the time they go wrong because of sensor problems. All you have to do is find out which sensor it is and reset the car so it’ll drive with a redundant sensor. But we have a computer with a fault code reader so we can tell what’s going wrong quite quickly.” The word “computer” is the crucial one here. Back in the early Eighties, a sea change in our driving life was happening. The letter “i” started to appear on the badges of increasing numbers of cars, indicating that the friendly old carburettor’s days were numbered. It had been replaced by fuel injection, a far more efficient way of getting fuel and air to mix prior to combustion. Most Eighties engines used a hybrid of digital and analogue control for fuel injection. But even then it meant the days when how an engine ran could be adjusted mechanically were history. Only people with the right software could control fuel injection systems. AA technical specialist Vanessa Guyll agrees. “It’s reasonable to say that fuel
injection was when home maintenance started to become increasingly difficult,” she says. “But since then carmakers have started putting covers over the engine and undertrays beneath it. When you open the bonnet and you’re faced with a cover, it can be quite intimidating, even though under that cover there’s everything the internal combustion engine has always had. And having to remove an undertray is a significant barrier to changing the oil, even though actually changing the oil is no different to any other car. Then there’s the space. Modern cars have an increasing amount of equipment on them and much of it is under the bonnet, so there’s barely any room to get tools in. Compare that with a Morris Minor, which had acres of space in the engine bay, and you can see why people are reluctant to do things themselves.” Assuming you can fight your way through all that, there’s another obstacle: the service light. From the midNineties, an increasing number of new cars came fitted with this device that illuminates as a reminder that the car is approaching the mileage limit for its regular maintenance. Once the service has been performed, that light needs to be reset. On some cars, such as current Citroëns and older Volkswagen Group models, you can find out how to reset the service light in the handbook or the manufacturer’s serving literature. But, cautions Vanessa Guyll, “Some of the latest vehicles can only be reset with special tools.” So yes, it might be trickier these days to access those basic parts, but not much has changed when you do find them. Get out there with a spanner and enjoy tinkering while you can; in a few years it could be nigh-on impossible.

Ever wondered how to find out what traffic conditions are like locally? Do you have access to the internet? Well the good news is that the cameras used by police and traffic information services are also available to the public! In fact Sout Yorkshire Transport’s website is the place to find all sorts of useful information, from the current road condidiotns, details of major roadworks, and even the position of mobile speed cameras! The South Yorkshire Jam Cams provide the latest up to date information on the primary road network across Sheffield and are provided by Sheffield City Council. Jam Cams are updated every minute throughout the day, although at times due to reasons beyond our control, these images may not be available for broadcast due to security incidents or general maintenance issues. There are a total of 32 cameras in the Sheffield Borough, these are all shown on this website. The location of these cameras can be found by hovering your mouse over the Camera images or by looking at the information for each camera above each camera image as to where each camera is located. www.sy-transport.co.uk/traffic/sheffield

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
More traffic issues this week, but not the fault of any road users, just the local council, and I’ll wager it was just as bad near you. The gritters had apparently been out in force, but any evidence was sadly lacking as I set off for a day of pike fishing at a venue just nine miles away. I’d only travelled about three miles when traffic came to a standstill, so took a short cut to get around the worst of it. Bad move. A mile up the road, and a little bit of ice was causing absolute mayhem, traffic was failing to negotiate a steep hill some distance further on, so I turned around and retraced my route, hoping to hit the main road again. After another thirty minutes sitting in traffic, I decided to give up and go home; I’d been out of the house for almost two hours, managed four miles, and was thoroughly fed up with not eben a wet line to show for it! A couple of degrees of frost, and the county ground to a halt…. shocking. So, after a disaster the day before, the wife gave me a weekend pass, (I never fish weekends if I can help it) and I decided on a few hours at Rudyard Lake using lure gear for perch and pike. It was a lazy choice, as I know that fish are all but guaranteed, even if they are only ‘wasps’, but I go fishing to catch fish, not sit behind quiet alarms, or watch motionless floats! When I arrived, as usual, I headed for the floating jetties, and to my horror, found two pike anglers set up with rods aplenty which were spread across the wooden boards. I gently walked across the slippery surface and politely asked if the duo would mind if I stood on the far end, and had an hour or two with the light lure gear? Promising to cause as little disturbance as possible, I crept to the end and dropped the jig head down into the depths, and, as soon as it hit the lake bed, the familiar ‘thump’ of a perch hit resonated up the braid and I lifted the rod into the first small perch. Another followed, and another, and another, with six fish in six drops, and I noticed the pikers watching. A couple more fish, and one of my compatriots was at my side, explaining that he had never used such light gear, nor tried jig work or dropshot, and wondered if I would show him the basics… Every angler likes to think they know something that others don’t, so I gladly handed over my rod, explained how my set up was balanced, ran through the tackle, and suggested where to drop in at the edge of the boards. The braid spilled from the spool as the tiny lure drifted to the bottom, and my new student watched intently until it stopped, indicating that the lure was on the lake bed. I explained that a gentle lift of an inch or two would put sufficient ‘life’ into the lure to attract attention, and observed as he felt for the pluck of piscine interest. Having just taken around ten
LOCAL F The past weekend may have been drier than the previous few weeks, but it also brought cold weather that resulted in the same outcome; more postponements for the County Senior League. League Cup 2nd Round After a number of postponements Sheffield Lane Top and Handsworth Parramore Reserves finally got around to playing their League Cup 2nd Round tie. Handsworth came out 4-1 winners and in the process set up a 3rd Round tie with Jubilee Sports. Harry Bamforth, Theo Wilson, Nathan Joynes and Oliver Grady (pen) were all on target for Handsworth. Premier Division Frecheville took advantage of a decimated fixture list, to go five points clear at the top of the Premier Division. They were 5-2 winners at Chaucer School against Jubilee Sports. Frecheville are
fish from the spot, I was disappointed that he didn’t catch within seconds, never mind the five fruitless minutes he spent patiently lifting the tiny jig, and could see his enthusiasm waning rapidly. He passed the rod to his dad…. As soon as the lure grounded, a perch hit it and was gleefully wound in by the older chap, much to the despair of junior angler. Dad landed three or four fish, then handed the rod back, and his son, filled with renewed concentration, deployed the lure again… A bump, and his first ‘wasp’ was promptly hooked and recovered from the depths. Safely to hand, it was unhooked and the lure was swiftly dropped in and yet another fish resulted. It was fish a chuck fun for the next hour or so as we shared the rod between us, no single fish was bigger than 8oz, but I was delighted to be able to show two experienced anglers something new, and see the enjoyment on their faces. It was made even more satisfying by the fact that their maggot feeder was throwing up only odd fish, as the light jig outfished the maggots comprehensively with a string of plump perch coming to the surface. We spent an hour or two fishing together, and they both told me how much they had enjoyed seeing the light kit, and getting a feel for something new. The pike baits they had out remained unmolested, but after using my jig kit, they had at least caught something. Between us, it was observed that we were the only anglers to score, half a dozen boats had returned without a fish between them, and other anglers on the bank remained fishless too as conditions proved a little tricky. It was a pleasure to spend time with these two chaps, the offer of brew from the café was reward enough for sharing a bit of knowledge, and I have to admit I enjoyed seeing them catch using a new method and new kit… after all, isn’t that what angling is really about? Sharing a few hours’ fun with likeminded people and catching a few fish along the way…. Blissful!

unbeaten in the league since a 4-2 loss to Millmoor Juniors on September 5th. The bottom two, Wickersley FC and Thorpe Hesley met at Wickersley School, with both knowing a win would be a huge boost towards their survival hopes. Goals from Luke Webster, Craig Cook and Ross Darrell gave Thorpe Hesley a vital 3-1 win and take them within a point of thirdbottom Oughtibridge WMFC with two games in hand. Division One Denaby United made it eight games unbeaten in Division One, with a 3-2 home win over High Green Villa. Denaby have won seven of the aforementioned eight games, and lead Division One. On Denaby’s tail are Caribbean Sports, who this weekend beat South Kirkby Colliery 1-0 at home thanks to a Daniel Harriott strike. Caribbean are six points off Denaby’s lead, after their fourth clean-sheet of the campaign.
Division Two A Steve Conway brace helped inspire New Bohemians to a 4-2 victory over Houghton Main Reserves at Middlecliffe Lane. Joe Garfitt and Ryan Taff were also on target for the Bohemians, who end a run of back-to-back league defeats with this win. FANTASTIC RESPECT EVEN AT DONCASTER ROVERS The Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA event at Doncaster Rovers last Saturday promoting the Football Association’s RESPECT Campaign was a huge success. Respect is The FA’s programme of activities to combat unacceptable behaviour in our game at every level – on the pitch, and from the sidelines. It features four practical steps to positively influence every game throughout the country, as well as an integrated education programme and awareness campaign and last Saturday, with the help of eight Under 9 teams from around the region, Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA was able to highlight some of the excellent work going on around the County FA region. On Saturday lunchtime, before the Doncaster Rovers v Gillingham League 1 fixture at the Keepmoat Stadium, eight Under 9 teams from the Doncaster & District, Sheffield & District and Barnsley & District Junior Leagues played in a festival type tournament. The eight teams were of BSA Trappers, Fishlake Falcons, Hemsworth Miners Welfare, Tickhill Red, New Bohemians, Sprotbrough & Cusworth Green, Castle Grove and Brampton Rovers. From the tournament two of the teams, BSA Trappers and Fishlake Falcons were chosen to act as mascots for Doncaster Rovers and Gillingham as the two teams filed their way on to the pitch just before kick-off and at half time all eight teams paraded Respect flags around the touchline. we take our responsibility seriously in leading from the front and in looking to ensure all games are played in a fun, safe and enjoyable environment. The event took place alongside this Football League One clash arising out of the hard work of the recently formed RESPECT Working Group at the County FA. Lisa Glaves, S&HCFA Welfare Officer and James Bell, S&HCFA Referee’s Development Administrator, who coordinated and organised the event said; “On behalf of everyone at the County FA, can we say a massive thank you to all the teams, players, parents and supporters for Saturday. “The games that were played on Saturday morning were testament as to why the teams and players were top of their leagues as far
as the Respect programme is concerned. They were all brilliant! “Can we also thank all the helpers, volunteers and referees for their support and, of course, Doncaster Rovers. A fantastic day for all.” At half time there was time to congratulate Crosspool Juniors Under 11s Girls team, who won the S&HCFA Girls Respect Award for last season, with the team represented on the day by Neil Speed, seen on one of the photos with Rovers player Cameron Stewart and Rovers mascot Donny the Dog. The rolling photos at the bottom of the page show all 8 teams with a number of action pictures as well. Once again a big well done to all the teams who took part on Saturday.

THEY’VE GIVEN EVERYTHING INTERESTED MILLERS MUMS URGED TO SIGN IN BEING A FLAG BEARER? UP FOR NEW COMMUNITY SPORT PROJECT Rotherham United boss Neil Redfearn was left ruing his side’s missed chances following their 3-0 defeat to Queens Park Rangers at AESSEAL New York Stadium. The Millers put in an impressive first half showing but failed to capitalise on their chances with the score goalless at the break and were undone by second half strikes from Junior Hoilett, Matt Phillps and Sebastian Polter. Redfearn admitted that the final scoreline did not reflect the performance and added that the game against the Hoops may have come too soon for his side after games against Brighton and Hove Albion and Leeds United. “It’s disappointing because it’s never a 3-0. First half we camped in their half and created enough chances to go in front, but didn’t take them,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “If I’m honest, I thought we ran out of steam in the second half. It’s basically been the same side and we’ve had three games in eight days. Obviously, the lack of numbers means we can’t rotate round, but I can’t criticise my players they’ve given everything over the last three games.” The Millers dominated proceedings in the opening 45 minutes but were unable to unlock the Hoops’ defence prior to the interval. The most notable of those chances fell to Matt Derbyshire who was denied by a heroic tackle from Nedum Onuoha after Paul
Green had struck the upright. “There were some mistakes for the goals, the defending wasn’t good, but these lads have been fantastic last six weeks. It was a great first half performance, we should have been in front, and if we had we would have gone onto win it,” Redfearn explained. “We had two or three opportunities that were cleared off the line or scrambled away and you’re just looking for someone to get on the end of it. Even at 1-0 and 2-0 we kept going.” The Millers boss insists his side must now pick themselves up and turn their focus to the challenge that awaits them at the Cardiff City Stadium next Saturday as they look to move themselves up the Sky Bet Championship table. Redfearn continued: “The lads are disappointed in there, but it’s up to me to pick them up, and we got to go again next week. “We pick ourselves up, it’s not ideal, but I’m pleased with the first half performance and we go again.”

FERGUSON GUTTED WE WITH GILLS RESULT BELIEVED Gaffer gutted his side could not earn another dramatic three points. Darren Ferguson expressed his disappointment – on behalf of the players – that his Doncaster side could only salvage a draw with Gillingham. Despite Rovers having gone 2-0 down to the high flying Gills, the Scot thought his side were the better team and did enough to take three points. “I can’t believe we haven’t won to be honest; we dominated,” said a baffled Ferguson. “We’ve lost poor goals which is why we’ve not won and we’ve missed two absolute sitters at 2-2 and I just can’t believe we’ve not won the game. “Even at 2-0 down I was screaming at them that there’s still a way to go – we’ve shown we can come back in games and they’ve shown that they can lose leads. “I’m really disappointed for the players that we’ve only got a draw because we’re now in a position where we’re dropping too many points if we want to be successful because we’re playing catch up.” Ferguson was relishing the entertaining nature of the football on show, which was aided by his substitutions with both Cameron Stewart and Liam
Mandeville contributing to a pulsating 2-2 draw. “The goal, I fancied him (Stewart) to score it. He’s got great technique, he’s scored a couple like that now and he got us right back in the game,” said Ferguson. “I have to give great credit to my players and they’re exciting games now aren’t they? I’d rather have it like this than a boring 0-0! “The fans were good. They could sense at 2-1 that we were back in it. The expectations are different now, they’re a lot more because the results have been more positive.”

Club Captain says that Rovers could and should - have won after a dramatic fightback. James Coppinger said that he expected Doncaster to defeat Gillingham on Saturday, even when Rovers were two nil down! Coppinger and his teammates trailed to Rory Donnelly’s brace against the high flying Gills but rallied thanks to goals from Cameron Stewart and Andy Williams to earn a share of the spoils. “I think we’ve proved that we can come back in games gone by, we’ve gone on

Helen Marney, director of operations at South Yorkshire Sport, which is running the project, said: “Mums’ Team is about giving mums the opportunity to build leadership and coaching and won games before,” said Coppinger. “I honestly thought we were going to win the game at 2-0 down and it’s a great feeling as a player to have that. “We’re disappointed, we just didn’t start the game well with conceding and then in the second half it was exactly the same. It’s frustrating because we played really well in spells and we’d worked on them all week and what we were going to do and it worked to an extent. “At the end of the game we had two chances to win it!” Coppinger, who celebrates his 35th birthday today, racked up his 477th Rovers appearance in the draw and the Captain hailed the influence of his adoring crowd. “I think they (the fans) believed,” he said. “When we were 2-0 down they got frustrated and that was understandable but they’ve been excellent – they were against Stoke when a Premier League

BLADES NEWS2015/16 EXTENDS GAFFER’S COLCHESTER VERDICT HAMMOND BLADES STAY
Nigel Adkins was again keen to praise the character of his players following Saturday’s last-gasp victory at Colchester United. After Tom Eastman had cancelled out Billy Sharp’s opener just before the hour, David Edgar was eventually credited with the Blades winning goal that came from Martyn Woolford’s 90th minute corner, via a Chris Basham flick on. And speaking in the
aftermath of the success at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, the Gaffer said it was points not plaudits that were on his mind. He commented: “After the long week and the three games we have had this last one was always going to be the toughest, but full credit to the players. “Billy Sharp gets another goal, his sixth in as many matches to put us in front, but then

in the second-half we are under the cosh and concede a goal and have to withstand a lot of pressure. “But these lads will always give you that grit, determination and resilience and in the end we snatch a winner from a corner. “We have not got what we have deserved at times this season, but this one was a case of the result was all that mattered on the back of a
good point at Wigan.” Adkins gave Kevin Kean’s U’s some praise for their performance, but was delighted his players once again netted late on to send the 889 fans who made the long trip to Essex home happy. The Blades boss added: “Colchester deserve commending on their effort, they have something about them and they gave it a real go. They were at home and are fighting to get up the table under a new manager. “We brought Jose (Baxter) on to try and influence the game more because Matt Done was dropping deeper and deeper, but we take the positives, another three points and move on. “Thanks to the supporters for travelling and backing the players throughout the game again, it was a tough and tiring week for all, but thankfully we gave them something to cheer about in all three games.”
Dean Hammond will remain a Blade until the end of the season, as Nigel Adkins continues to shape his squad during the January transfer window. The 32-year-old has made 16 appearances in all competitions for United since arriving on a temporary basis from Leicester City in late October, scoring once against Shrewsbury Town. Hammond has added experience to Nigel Adkins’s engine room and the former Southampton skipper is eligible for the Sky Bet League One clash at Colchester United on Saturday. The midfielder has previously spoken of his desire to extend his loan until the end of the season in a bid to help the Blades win promotion to the Championship and boss Adkins is equally as delighted to have completed the formalities on the
extension. The Gaffer remarked: “I have said it many times, Dean is a honest, hardworking professional of the highest level and he is a big part of our squad and team. His presence around the place is bringing other players on, he is a role model for them to look up to. “He is vastly experienced but, importantly, has that hunger and excitement for more and he knows, like the rest of us, the potential and ambition this Club has. “He might not do the things that get the supporters off their seats, but he does all the nasty things, the little bits of work that needs to be done but doesn’t get noticed. “Dean is a grafter, a genuine hard-worker and we are delighted that we have been able to secure his services until the end of the campaign. Having him will only help us try and get where we want to be.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 JOE BENNETT SEALS OWLS LOAN HILLSBOROUGH
Sheffield Wednesday have signed Aston Villa left back Joe Bennett on loan until the end of the season. The 25-year-old will remain at Hillsborough until 30 June. Having come through the ranks at Middlesbrough, Bennett signed his first professional deal at The Riverside in the summer of 2008. The promising full back had impressed sufficiently to earn a two-year deal and made his debut for Boro in their clash Premier League clash with West Ham in May 2009. He went on to make 92 appearances for Middlesbrough before Aston Villa came calling in August 2012 for a reported fee of £2.75m. Bennett made 30 appearances during his maiden season at Villa Park, becoming a
regular performer in the top flight. He joined Brighton on a season-long loan in August 2014 and starred in the Championship, making a total of 42 appearances for the Seagulls before returning to Villa in the summer. Upon signing a oneyear extension to his contract at Villa Park, Bennett moved to join Bournemouth on loan in September 2015, until January of this year. The full back has made one appearance for Aston Villa this season during their 5-3 victory over Notts County, where he scored his side’s fifth goal in extra time. At international level, Bennett has been capped by England at Under-19, 20 and 21 level. Bennett will wear squad number 12 for the Owls.

FEET ON THE GROUND AND FOCUSED The Owls climbed into the top six over the weekend after victory over Leeds but Carlos Carvalhal insists the only time league position counts for anything is in May. With 19 games and 57 points left to battle for, there will be plenty of jockeying for position and movement across the division in that time. The only focus as far as the head coach is concerned is Saturday’s trip to Reading. “We will play next
week in the same way and believe me when I say league position is not important at the moment,” he said. “As long as we are fighting in all the games to the three points, that is the most important and now we are focused on the next game. “Like we did with Leeds, we will focus on how Reading play, how they can create damage to us, what the weak points they have and try to explore. “In May, that is when it matters. I have seen teams in 3rd place who are now down and I’ve seen teams like us who were in 18th after seven games and now in the top six.” Given the current run the Owls are enjoying, Carlos still feels there is plenty more to come from his side in this exciting Sky Bet Championship campaign. An encouraging thought indeed, and he explained: “What I know is, and I can say this because I can feel it, that in the second half of the season we will be more strong. “Why? Because we feel full energy in our players.”
Wednesday’s stronghold at Hillsborough extended on Saturday as Yorkshire rivals Leeds were defeated 2-0. Sam Hutchinson – who signed a new two and a half year deal in the build-up to the game – said one of the aims at the start of the season was to make Hillsborough a difficult place for the opposition. With five consecutive wins on home soil and now 13 without defeat, Hutchinson said: “Before we started the season that was one of the plans the head coach brought in, to make sure when teams come to Hillsborough, they know what they’re coming into. “The fans have helped us achieve that and I think we’ve got a style of play that helps on a bigger
THE SHAKEY
pitch because we like to move the ball quickly and there is more space here. “Teams struggle to deal with how we play at Hillsborough and that’s down to the manager and down to the players.” While Wednesday have enjoyed a 100% start to 2016, the combative midfielder feels performances can improve. He continued: “I don’t think we’ve played as well as we did before Christmas but we have won all the games and that’s the sign of us getting stronger. “I think we can play better but we are still winning. “My goal is to help the team move forward, keep winning games and get closer to our target which is the Premier League.”
