ALBERT SNODGRASS

I didn’t realise how good I am on the phone until I found out my call to customer service may be used for training purposes. My wife said, “It’s my mother’s birthday soon, what shall we get her?” I said, “Nothing.” She said, “Don’t be mean.” I said, “I’m not. We bought her a plot in the cemetery last year and she still hasn’t bloody used it.” My wife’s a terrible cook, who can never get her sauces right. But I’ve stuck with her, through thick and thin. It’s so annoying when you’re looking everywhere but can’t find your charger. Especially when you’re next up in the jousting competition. A law student at Kings College is threatening to sue confectionery company Nestle, over a packet of Kit Kat’s she bought, wherein all were missing wafers. Personally, I think she should give them a break. I wanna hang a map of the world in my house. Then I’m gonna put pins into all the locations that I’ve travelled to. But first, I’m gonna have to travel to the top two corners of the world so that it will not fall off the wall. I’m trying to open these crisps quietly. Some say slower is better, others say fast. But most are saying “Show some damn respect, this is a funeral.” I hate that awkward moment when you leave a store but don’t buy anything, and you’re telling yourself, “act natural, you’re innocent.” After just 2 days on the raw food diet I’ve lost over a stone! It’s kind of put me off sausages and chicken for a while though.

BRIGHT END TO NATIONAL HUNT SEASON AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE DONCASTER Racecourse is preparing for a bright end to the National Hunt season as it gets set to attract some of the country’s top trainers and jockeys to the BetBright Festival. On Friday, March 4, the Town Moor venue will host the opening day of the two-day bonanza, which includes a packed seven-strong race card kicking off with the first race at 2.10pm.

The festival continues on Saturday, March 5 which features the popular Betbright Grimthorpe Chase, with the first race taking place at 2.00pm followed by live music. Prior to the early 1980s the Grimthorpe Chase was run over two miles and 150 yards. The distance was then upped dramatically, nearly doubling to a stamina-testing four miles and 100 yards. The distance was changed to its current

format in the 1990s, when it was run as the Velka Pardubicka Grimthorpe Chase, a reference to Velká pardubická, a famous race run in the Czech Republic over varied obstacles. The race is named in honour of the Grimthorpe family who have been involved in racing for many years. Kieran Gallagher, executive director at Doncaster Racecourse, said: “The Grimthorpe Chase is hotly

contested and due to its intense demands, is widely considered a trial for the Grand National. “The Betbright Festival, which benefits from the increase in prize money recently announced by ARC is a fantastic way to round off the national hunt fixtures at Doncaster this season.” For further information about Doncaster Racecourse or to book tickets call 01302 304200 or go to www.doncasterracecourse.co.uk.

CUTS HITS VULNERABLE SIGHT LOSS Planned changes to housing benefit could leave vast numbers of the country’s most vulnerable people unable to afford rent on their homes. With changes coming into effect in April and many schemes already on hold, the National Housing Federation, with the backing of Age UK, Mencap and Women’s Aid, is calling on government to confirm that this new cap will apply only to people that don’t need extra support. New figures from the National Housing Federation show that more than 50,000 households could be affected over the course of just one year, losing an average of £68 per week each. As a result, 82,000 specialist homes would become unviable and be forced to close - 41% of all of this type of housing. In November the Chancellor introduced a cap on housing benefit for tenants in the social sector. Many of these tenants live in housing schemes which provide extra

care and support, with the higher rents and service charges often covered by housing benefit. A rapidly ageing population means that the need for specialist housing is greater than ever with nearly 50,000 extra homes needed over the next decade. Building work on an estimated 2,400 new specialist homes has already been cancelled as a result and an additional 9,270 homes would not be able to be built if the LHA cap went ahead. David Orr, of the National Housing Federation, said:“We are urgently seeking clarity from Government: will this cap apply to those who are, by definition, the most in need of extra help? If this cap applies to specialist housing, tens of thousands of vulnerable people will be unable to afford the cost of their home and care. Huge numbers of people will be affected including older people and dementia patients and they cannot go without specialist care and support.’’

PUBLIC OUTCRY LEADS TO TIMETABLE CHANGES

Changes to dozens of bus services across South Yorkshire - some following controversial cuts - are due to arrive in the next few weeks. The timetable alterations will affect services in Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham. Thousands of people called for the cuts, which caused weeks of frustration and confusion, to be reversed “Changes to some bus services will take place in January and February”, said a spokesman for South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. Some of our members feel so strongly that they have set up a Sheffield 50+ Public Transport Group. Members

Drink Wise Age Well are running workshops with the aim of raising awareness about Drink Wise, Age Well and alcohol; hopefully allowing individuals to make informed choices about their alcohol consumption so that it is not impacting on their health, lifestyle and/or work/ home life. The workshops are designed to help participants be aware of the Drink Wise, Age Well programme, why addressing alcohol consumption in the over 50 population is so important and to have an understanding about alcohol. The workshop will help you to describe how age may influence the impact of alcohol on the body or be the reason for use, how to calculate units, state the government guidelines for alcohol, identify factors that may indicate someone may be drinking too much and how you can drink wiser and the benefits of this. National studies suggest that many older people have sight loss that goes undetected or untreated. This can greatly reduce quality of life because people cannot do things as they used to. Left untreated loss of vision can lead to falls that can have serious consequences. The NHS want to improve what they do so they can reduce the impact of sight loss on wellbeing. Researchers at the University of Sheffield are working with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop ways to improve detection and access to care for older people with sight loss in Sheffield. The Centre for Assistive Technology and Connected Healthcare at the University of Sheffield are holding a drop in meeting on Monday 15th February between 11am and 1pm. If you know through personal experience or acquaintances about the impact sight loss can have on older people’s independence or wellbeing, the researchers would like to invite you to come to an informal chat for half an hour. You can register online at http://tinyurl. com/catchsight or phone or email Laura Murray 0114 222 1726/ l.murray@ sheffield.ac.uk. Places for the event are limited. Please register before Thursday, 11 February.

MERCURY MERCURYJOBS JOBS JOBS& &LEGAL & LEGAL COUNCIL VOLUNTEERS GIVE HELP TO OLDER PEOPLE

More than 200 council staff have volunteered to give extra help to older people this winter. This means people who don’t have family and friends nearby will have someone to bring round emergency supplies like bread, milk and medication, or check in on them if the weather turns and it snows or there is ice on the ground. In the last six years the council’s voluntary scheme has grown from just three people to 230 staff. Now the army of volunteers is ready to support 1,800 older people who are part of Sheffield City Council’s community support worker service, which provides support to older people referred by their GPs. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for Health, Care and Independent Living at Sheffield City Council, said: “We’ve got some great staff working at the council and many want to help in their own time, as well as at work. It can be difficult for people to get out during wintery weather. Older people in particular can struggle and can be very isolated. I’m really proud that so many of our staff have offered to help.” Community support workers from the council telephone the older people on their books to check they are alright and have food when snow is forecast. Andy Wallace, who works at the council, was asked to visit an older man last winter after his sister couldn’t reach him on the phone.

Andy said: “I wasn’t sure what I would find when I got to William’s house as his sister was worried that he might have fallen or something worse had happened. But luckily he was fine – he’s a bit deaf so hadn’t heard his sister phoning him so didn’t know she was worried. When he answered the door, he was really surprised and so happy to see someone. l asked him if he needed anything, he declined but said he really appreciated me taking time to see him in the bad weather His sister was also happy when she knew he was alright. I felt on top of the world and like I’d really made a difference. I also asked a Community Support Worker to go and see him, which they did the very next day.” The council is also encouraging people to help their older neighbours this winter. It is promoting its new ‘Snow your neighbour you care’ card which has been designed to help kind-hearted people offer help to older people this winter. Designed to act as an ice-breaker and a way for people to introduce themselves, people can add their details to the card and post it through an older person’s door, or use it to start off a chat. It includes the words: ‘hello my name is’, ‘I live at’, ‘you can contact me by’ and ‘I am happy to help with things like clearing snow, shopping or just having a chat.’ For more information and to download the card please visit www.sheffield.gov.uk. Cards can also be picked up from libraries, doctors’ surgeries, council buildings and other public buildings.

Cancer charity encourages supporters to leave lasting legacy on World Cancer Day To mark World Cancer Day, the dedicated charity for the regions cancer hospital is encouraging people to support them when writing or amending their will and leave a lasting legacy. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity has teamed up with Irwin Mitchell solicitors who are offering charity supporters a special discounted Will writing service and also making a donation to the cancer charity for each Will they write for a charity supporter. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Since 1994, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity has received a total of £4.7 million thanks to people kindly choosing to remember the charity’s work in their Will. These funds have helped improve the lives of thousands of local cancer patients and their families. As much as 38% of the charity’s income can come from people kindly leaving a gift in their Will to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, meaning that a third of the charity’s vital projects would not go ahead without people choosing to support in this special way. Kathleen Asquith from Bramley, Rotherham, who received treatment at Weston Park Hospital, has recently chosen to re-write her will in support of the cancer charity. Kathleen was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2011 and received initial treatment at Rotherham Hospital; before receiving a course of radiotherapy treatment at Weston Park Hospital in November 2011. Now fit, healthy and enjoying an active lifestyle, Kathleen wanted to start the New Year off by organising her finances and making plans for her future. Kathleen said, ‘This year it will be 4 years

since I was cured of breast cancer thanks to the staff at Rotherham and Weston Park Hospital. I want to give something back to the hospitals that looked after me so well during my treatment. Leaving a gift in my Will to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is a way that I can ensure that the vital work of the hospital lives on after I’m gone and benefits more people in the future- though I plan on it being a long while before that time comes!’ With research suggesting that as many as two thirds of us don’t have a will in place, it’s crucial that people of all ages think about arranging this important provision for the future. Gillian Coverley, a partner and Wills specialist at Irwin Mitchell, said: “Making or updating a Will can be easy to put off or overlooked but it helps give family and friends peace of mind that your affairs are taken care of as you wished them to be – and with a gift to Weston Park Cancer Hospital Charity included, no matter how large or small, you can help support their vital work.” Weston Park Hospital is respected internationally as a centre of excellence for the treatment of cancer and for conducting pioneering cancer

research and Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital. Charity Fundraising Manager, Helen Gentle said, “We’re incredibly grateful to Kathleen for choosing to support us in this special way and contribute to the future of cancer services across the region. We understand that your loved ones will always come first but if you would also like to remember the work of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and leave us a gift in your Will we would be very

grateful of your support.” “There is no minimum gift you can choose to leave Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity in your Will, and no matter how big or small the donation, we are incredibly thankful to everyone who chooses to remember us in this thoughtful way as Kathleen has done.” If you would like more information on how to remember Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity in your Will please visit our dedicated web page www.wphcancercharity/remember or call the charity office on 01142265370.

YOUNG PEOPLE IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE GET CREATIVE IN A BID TO MAKE SMOKING HISTORY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS Young people from across South Yorkshire have come together to form a campaigning group, which will be known as Youthlight. As part of its first project, Youthlight is challenging young people to create a short video themed around the dangers of smoking. The competition is open to all young people (aged between 13-20) in Doncaster, Sheffield and Rotherham. Entries will be judged by a panel, which includes Producer Colin Pons, Course Leader in MA Film-making

at Sheffield Hallam University. Shares and likes on social media will also be taken into consideration. The creator of the best online video will win a Go Pro camera and a chance to attend a lecture at Sheffield Hallam University as an introduction to filmmaking. Entrants are being urged to show their creativity by producing a 15-second clip, which will either encourage smokers to quit or prevent young people from taking up the habit. The short videos, which can feature either actors or animation, should be uploaded to www. youthlight.co.uk by midnight on 31st March. Colin Pons, Course Leader in Film-making at Sheffield Hallam University and producer of films like HUSH and Still Loved, is looking forward to seeing the entries. He said: “Young people are among the best story tellers, particularly when it comes to creating online video content. I am really looking forward seeing the entries. “People are being asked to tackle a tough subject so it’s going to be a real challenge to create a compelling video that gets the message across. As part of the judging process, I will be looking for creativity, content and quality of delivery. The winning video will also need to be engaging enough for people to want to share

on social media.” Alex Sisman, head boy at Newlands Academy in Sheffield and a member of Youthlight, is urging as many young people as possible to take up the challenge. He said: “The short video competition is a great initiative to help launch Youthlight and I hope it will attract more members to join our group. “As this is our first project together, we are really pleased to have the support of Colin Pons and Sheffield Hallam University.” Youthlight is supported by South Yorkshire Tobacco Control Collaborative, a combined initiative between Rotherham, Sheffield and Doncaster councils, to help reduce the number of smokers in the region. Councillor Jackie Drayton, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, said: “This project is a great example of partnership working as well as using young people’s creativity and video making skills to highlight the dangers of smoking, especially for young people. “I would encourage young people to enter this competition and look forward to watching their videos.” To find out more about Youthlight and the short video competition, visit www.youthlight.co.uk.

YORKSHIRE’S men and women are being urged to get a taste for fundraising by signing up to Britain’s Biggest Breakfast in aid of Cancer Research UK. The charity is calling on everyone - porridge perfectionists, muesli munchers and the brunch bunch - to conjure up a breakfast bonanza as part of its latest fundraising campaign. Cancer Research UK is encouraging people to organise a breakfast party at home, in the office or at school and invite their friends and family to make a donation to attend. Participants can unite with the rest of the UK

and host their event on Friday 11 March or choose another day during the month to help beat cancer sooner. Every day, 81 people are diagnosed with cancer in the Yorkshire and The Humber*. And that’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on people across the region to sign up for their free fundraising pack now. Nicki Embleton, Cancer Research UK spokesperson for Yorkshire, said: “We’re urging people across the region to rally their friends, family, colleagues and neighbours and take part in Britain’s Biggest Breakfast. “We know that Yorkshire folk love a hearty brekkie, so this is the perfect opportunity to bring out the breakfast bowls and get involved. Money donated will help to fund vital research. From porridge pros to talented toast-makers, everyone’s welcome at the breakfast table.” Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its research but with help from the people of Yorkshire the charity is fighting the disease on all fronts. Cancer Research UK’s Britain’s Biggest Breakfast pack contains everything supporters need to plan their perfect breakfast, including posters, decorations,

recipe suggestions and fundraising ideas. Event hosts can simply collect donations upfront from friends and family or on the day of their breakfast. Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Thanks to advances in research, more people in Yorkshire are surviving cancer than ever before. But to help even more people survive, Cancer Research UK needs everyone in the county to act. Nicki Embleton added: “Every step we take towards beating cancer relies on every hour of research, every pound donated and every person who gets involved. That’s why we’re calling on people in Yorkshire to make their breakfast bigger and better than ever and help raise much-needed funds. “Whether you like your eggs sunny side up or over easy, by serving up some tasty breakfast treats this March, you’ll be helping to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.” To sign up and get a free fundraising pack, visit cruk.org/breakfast

TRAMLINES ANNOUNCES FOR WAVE OF ACTS FOR 2016 Tramlines, Sheffield’s award-winning inner-city music festival, has announced the first wave of artists for its 2016 event, which will take place across multiple venues and outdoor stages in the city’s centre from Friday 22 to Sunday 22 July. Renowned for its eclectic lineup, festival organisers have again delivered a genre-spanning spread of names, with confirmations including headliner Dizzee Rascal, as well as the likes of Young Fathers, Dawn Penn, Goldie MBE, Toddla T, Norman Jay MBE, Amy Becker, Mumdance, Field Music, Hinds, Gwenno, C Duncan, Randall and many more. Now in its eighth year, Tramlines remains one of the most diverse music festivals around, bringing a unique selection of international and UK talent to Sheffield. The 2015 event saw Tramlines move its Main Stage to a new site, with capacity doubled to 15,000, as the city saw over 100,000 festival-goers arrive to enjoy an unforgettable weekend with performances including Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans, Buzzcocks, Sugarhill Gang, Martha Reeves, Slaves, Billy Bragg and more. After scooping awards for ‘Best Medium-Sized Festival’ and ‘Best City Festival’ at the Festival Baby Awards, and being shortlisted for ‘Best Metropolitan Festival’ at the UK Festival Awards, 2016 looks set to be the biggest and best Tramlines ever, with the first announcement of hugely talented artists delivering a statement of intent. The organisers are thrilled to announce Dizzee Rascal as Friday night’s Main Stage headliner. A groundbreaking and critically-acclaimed UK talent whose music spans grime, UK garage, bassline, British hip hop and R&B, Dizzee Rascal’s energetic live sets are legendary. Elsewhere, fellow Mercury Prize winners Young Fathers have also been announced, and will deliver their unique brand of UK hip-hop, while cult art-pop heroes Field Music - a.k.a. brothers David and Peter Brewis - will show off the best indie rock Wearside has to offer. Legendary Jamaican singer Dawn Penn will be touching down in Sheffield to wow the Tramlines crowds with her classic hit, ‘You Don’t Love Me’ and more, while former Pipettes vocalist Gwenno will showcase her stylish, Welsh Music Prize-winning brand of indie-pop. With a keen commitment to showcasing new and breaking artists, Tramlines has once again sourced some of the best emerging UK talent. Acts include acclaimed rapper Little Simz; Madrid four-piece Hinds; 2015 Mercury Prize nominee C Duncan; former Racehorses frontman Meilyr Jones’ new solo project; breaking singer-songwriter Rukhsana

Merrise; Liverpool psychedelic trio All We Are, and Sheffield slacker-pop outfit Trash. The electronic offering at Tramlines is always a major talking point, and 2016’s lineup again mixes up a selection ranging from house through to grime, from feel good tunes to underground techno. Local hero Toddla T returns to the festival to head up a takeover at the O2 Academy where he’ll curate an unmissable lineup. Elsewhere on the festival site is Metalheadz don and D&B royalty Goldie MBE; purveyor of ‘Good Times’ and soul grooves Norman Jay MBE; 1Xtra Daily Dose Mix resident Amy Becker; and experimental grime/techno producer Mumdance, performing a B2B set with Pinch for the first time in Sheffield. Tickets for Tramlines Festival 2016 are now on sale and, as ever, they remain seriously good value. A full weekend ticket (covering all stages from day until night) comes in at the bargain price of just £42 +bf. The 2016 ticketing system brings with it some changes, with the introduction of Day and Night tickets now making it easier for festival-goers to catch their favourite bands. From £23 +bf, fans of bands, new music, and those for whom watching the headliners is a must, can opt for a Daytime Ticket, providing access to all outdoor stages and various venues. For fans of dance music of all kinds, from techno to D&B and everything in between, a Nighttime Ticket is available for £20 + bf, permitting entry to clubs on Friday and Saturday night, or from £5+ bf if Sunday is the night to stay out! Tramlines Festival Director Sarah Nulty commented: “We are really excited to return with Tramlines, for what is now our eighth year. Having Dizzee to headline the Main Stage on Friday will be an incredible way to start the weekend. We listened to feedback from last year and realised people needed more choice when it came to buying tickets to help them catch their favourite acts. So far, the new options have been well received, and earlybird tickets have already sold out. We’ve got some great headliners yet to announce plus a great mix of international and local talent still to come and we’re all looking forward to sharing what is set to be our biggest year yet.”

LEEDS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCE NEXT LINE-UP UPDATE

most streamed group in the world on Spotify, with “Radioactive” being the most downloaded song in rock history. Having not performed at the festival since August 2013, we have a sneaking suspicion this is going to be a blooming awesome show. A duo who have quite literally seized 2016 by the knackers, Jack U aka Skrillex and Diplo have also been announced for Leeds Festival 2016. Having released their debut in February 2015, by far the largest single to emerge from the recording is “Where Are U Now” which featured the mighty Justin Bieber. Charting at number one on the UK singles charts, this track not only was an international floor filler but also totally changed the perception people had on The Biebs. This single won an American Award for best collaboration along with a Best Visual Effects Award by MTV and is an absolute bloody banger. Up next and recently announced for Leeds Festival 2016…Fetty Wap. With singles to include “Trap Queen,” “679” and “My Way” the US rapper has had over 150 million streams on SoundCloud, with “Trap Queen” certifying itself as a platinum selling single. With a long list of accolades to include an MTV Award, A Beta Hip Hop Award and an Mc100 Award, quite frankly we wouldn’t miss this performance for anything…trust us. If hip hop isn’t up your street, hardcore kings Park Way Drive are also set to slay Leeds Festival this year. Forming in 2003, the Australian pack have released five studio albums, with their most recent, “Ire” in September 2015 charting within the UK top 30 on the UK album charts. Having performed on some of the world’s most influential stages of rock, Park Way Drive are without a doubt one of the most hardworking, fierce groups on the hardcore scene. Also announced at Leeds Festival 2016 include: Foals, Two Door Cinema Club, Crystal Castles, Oliver Helders, Hannah Wants, Nothing But Thieves and The Internet. These will join Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The 1975, Courteeners, Eagles of Death Metal and Crossfaith. For more on the line-up and ticket details, please see the website www.leedsfestival.com for all the latest.

Preview: Leeds Festival, 26-28/08/16, Bramham Park Leeds By Kt Evans

Of all the festivals on the summer’s music events, Leeds Festival will remain as the one closest to our own hearts. Having witnessed the likes of Pulp tear up the main stage, Bring Me The Horizon shoot to stratospheric levels along side Arctic Monkeys safeguarding their position as Sheffield’s finest export, we can think of no better way of spending our August bank holiday weekend that in a muddy filed under canvas. With the line-up steadily increasing, here’s all the latest you need to know about Leeds 2016. Red Hot Chilli Peppers. A band who need absolutely no introduction, these US slayers will be headlining the event, which is expected to once again sell over 100,000 tickets to festival goers across the country. However, a recent string of acts have also been announced, including the mighty Disclosure. Having already headlined the closing night of the NME Stage at Leeds 2014 (and believe us when we say that it was pretty flippin’ epic) the duo have released two studio albums and in 2014 were nominated for the “Best Dance/ Electronic Act.” As of yet, we are still waiting to hear which day and what stage they shall be performing on (although we strongly suspect they will feature right at the top of the main stage line-up) so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for more information. Also announced and fondly known by MTV as “the world’s biggest break through act “ is the might Imagine Dragons. Stemming from Las Vegas (they’re sure going to have a shock when they get to Leeds then…) in 2014 the band were nominated for a grand total of fourteen awards including Billboard recognition titles and a Milestone Award. Within the same year, Imagine Dragons were also the second

LOWER LIMIT AND 'FRENCH STYLE' BREATHALYSER LAW COULD HELP TO SAVE MORE LIVES Following the debate of a Private Members’ Bill in the House of Lords on Friday 29th January, which sought to lower the drink-drive limit in England and Wales to the same as Scotland, alcohol safety experts say more lives could be saved with the introduction of a breathalyser law. In France, where the drink-drive limit has been the same as Scotland’s for many years, a legal requirement for all motorists to keep a breathalyser in their vehicle was introduced in 2012. Following its implementation the breathalyser law has made a significant contribution to road safety in France. Figures released last year by France’s road safety board the CISR [comité interministériel de sécurité routière] reported an 8% decrease in road deaths in 2013 – just one year after the breathalyser law came into force and the lowest level of fatalities on French roads since 1948.1

STORM HENRY’S HIGH WINDS + DRIVING RAIN = DRIVING PROBLEMS Drivers must not ignore warnings about Storm Henry, particularly in Scotland, the North of England and North Wales, says the AA. Max Holdstock, the AA’s Patrol of the Year, said that high winds present significant hazards for drivers. “Wind in the UK rarely blows steadily – and with Storm Henry, gusts of 90mph can be expected in some places.. “You can easily be blown off course especially on exposed roads; when crossing bridges, passing gaps in hedges or buildings or emerging from a cutting.” An AA-Populus* study found that 1 in 10 lack confidence when driving in strong winds. The study also found that just over half of drivers (53%) said that they were ‘very confident’ driving in strong wind. But, Max Holdstock points out, gusty winds can catch out even the most experienced drivers. “In country areas, there is a high risk of trees and branches being blown into your path while in urban streets, high winds will pick up anything not properly fixed – such as fence panels, wheeliebins, trampolines or even garden sheds. “And you should give a particularly wide berth

In comparison, in 2014 alone alcohol accounted for 5,650 accidents and 8,320 casualties on UK roads and figures for fatalities have remained static since 2010 with an increase in deaths even being recorded between 2012 and 2013.2 Suzannah Robin is an alcohol safety expert at AlcoDigital. She works with corporate and governmental organisations and has helped dozens of local authorities and councils to implement their alcohol testing policies for staff. She said: “The introduction of a lower drink-drive limit in England and Wales to fall in line with Scotland will save hundreds of lives. However, as results in France have shown, there is the opportunity to save dozens of more lives through the introduction of a similar breathalyser law across the UK.” There is increasing support for drink-drive safety in the UK with the latest AHA (Alcohol Health Alliance) poll revealing that 77% of people would support a reduction in the drink-drive limit. Sales of breathalysers in the UK to individuals wanting to ensure they are alcohol-free before they drive have also quadrupled since the introduction of the French breathalyser law in 2012 and the reduction in the drink-drive limit in Scotland in December 2014. Most recently retail giant Tesco introduced single use morning after breathalysers into their UK fuel stations with sales increasing five-fold in the first six weeks of trading revealing that there is a growing understanding amongst drivers of the devastating effects that drink-driving can have on lives. Suzannah added:

“We wholeheartedly support a reduction in the drinkdrive limit in England and Wales however more needs to be done to address issues such as drivers who are unaware that they may still not be safe to drive the morning after drinking. We would actively encourage a debate on introducing a breathalyser law to the UK so that even more lives can be saved.”

around cyclists or motor-cyclists.” The AA says that drivers should keep their speed down and keep both hands firmly on the wheel especially if their vehicle is being buffeted by gusts or is in the slipstream of other vehicles. Max Holdstock says: “The faster you are driving, the longer it takes to get your vehicle under control again if you have been blown off-course by a sudden gust.” Heavy rain is also often associated with high winds and drivers should beware of flooded roads. He adds that if you break down on a motorway or busy road, it’s possible that other vehicles, especially high sided vehicles and trailers, might veer into your car if they are blown off course so it’s best to get away to a safe location, ideally behind a crash barrier if there is one, well away from your car. “It is dangerous to drive in the most severe conditions,” Max Holdstock says. “But if you must, be prepared. Plan your journey and allow extra time, keeping an ear out for local radio traffic reports. Download the AA App which provides live AA RoadWatch traffic reports from Inrix. And take warm and waterproof clothing and a fullycharged mobile phone, as well as, high-energy snacks such as chocolate and drinking water. “Bear in mind that it could take some time for you to be rescued especially if the road has been closed by fallen trees, flood water or a collision.”

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve been on a new water this week, one I’ve never fished before, and after finding out that it was reckoned to be a difficult challenge, I was reasonably pleased with how the session went... The weather forecast was for a mild, overcast day; not the ideal conditions for deadbaiting for pike, but, as that was my intention, I was going anyway. On arrival, I selected the popular car park peg, as sciatica had set in the night before, so I dumped the kit as close as I could to the van, and commenced tackling up. It’s simple stuff, so my Sonik SK3 XTR’s were quickly threaded and a snap tackle attached, before being baited with a sea deadbait. I chose to fish with only two rods to avoid any potential problems, and both baits were gently lobbed out into open water. The bobbins set, and I sat back to wait. I’m a big fan of injecting fishy oils into my deadbaits for two reasons. Obviously, an added attractant is easier for the pike to detect, but it also occasionally helps me as I watch the water; when a pike picks up my bait, there is often a slick of oil which rises to the surface, flattens any ripples, and has me ready to pick up the rod to strike the instant I feel resistance. After forty minutes, a bubble of oil rose to the surface and caused me to take note of my indicators. A small lift before the mainline pulled free, and I watched the line spill from the spool as a fish took the bait and moved off! I pinched the line to see if I could feel the pike, then lifted the rod to connect… and boy, did it connect! I battled with an unseen foe for almost ten minutes; a plodding tussle, during which I didn’t even see the fish as it hugged the bottom about fifty yards out, and continued to try and shake the hooks. It did… After an arm aching scrap, the line went slack and I knew that a potential personal best had escaped; I was less than impressed, but at least it was a bite, so I knew my tactics were probably right. I put the bait back on the spot, and recommenced the lonely wait… Just as I packed up, a slow drop back told of

more interest, and once again, I lifted into another good fish. At least I saw this one, a glossy fish I’d estimate at around 18lb, before it too shed the hooks and slid back into the murky depths. Not a particularly auspicious start, but at least I’d connected with the residents, even if they didn’t fancy joining me on the bank! I was happy, at least I have somewhere to start next time… This week saw the postman bring gifts aplenty from Rapture UK. A fairly new arrival on the UK lure scene, Rapture’s Bill Morris, who holds the UK distribution rights contacted me to see if I’d offer some feedback about a number of products, including an entry level rod designed for light jig work; perhaps my favourite style of fishing, and a selection of lures. I’ve had a couple of hours with the kit, and so far, I’m impressed. The rod has a very slim carbon blank, and is rated to throw lures between 2-8g. It comes in an understated black colour scheme with minimal graphics, and an abbreviated butt section which prevents the rod getting caught whilst fishing which I found useful as I wear a thick coat in cold weather, and often get caught up in the crook of my elbow! The line guides stand high enough to keep wet braid off the blank, and it’s got a fairly stiff, yet sensitive tip to set the hook. I’m undecided about the reel seat, but as long as my reel stays on, then I’m happy! I won’t go into too much detail about the lures yet, as I’ve only tried a small number of them, but suffice to say, they follow much the same pattern as many others, but they are very supple, and create lots of movement when twitched back across the lake bed. I swapped between Alien Claw, Mebaru Worms, Slurps and Power Minnows, and although the bigger fish didn’t show, I managed to take a good number of fish to around the pound mark. Other anglers didn’t catch either, and the poor weather made fishing unpleasant, so after proving that they worked, I returned home to get warmed up! The attention last weekend was firmly on league action, with a full fixture list across all four divisions of the County Senior League. Premier Division League leaders Frecheville fell to just their second loss of the season, as they were beaten by defending champions Swinton Athletic 4-3 at home. Mark Clare (2), Shawn Mitchell and Ryan Doxey were all on target for Swinton, with Frecheville falling to their first league defeat since 5th September. Houghton Main cut Frecheville’s lead at the top of the Premier Division to six points, when they comfortably saw-off Oughtibridge WMFC 4-1 at Middlecliffe Lane. Orrin McIntyrre starred for Houghton Main scoring twice in the process. Third placed Swallownest FC’s indiffent form continued, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to third-bottom Thorpe Hesley. Swallownest have gone three games without-a-win back to their win over Houghton Main on 28th November. Athersley Recreation Reserves pulled themselves further from the relegation places with a hard-fought 3-2 away win against Millmoor Juniors. Tim Council scored the only goal at the Memorial Ground, where AFC Penistone Church beat Wickersley FC 1-0.

Division One League leaders Denaby United made it six wins on the bounce, as they recorded a steady 2-0 win over Sheffield Bankers at Old Road Playing Fields. Second placed Caribbean Sports bounced from their defeat 1-0 to High Green last week, with a 4-1 home win over AFC Dronfield. Caribbean trail Denaby by six points. The top two meet at Old Road next week. A brace from Gareth Hays gave Byron House a vital 2-0 away win over Silkstone United. The win is enough to lift Byron House off the foot-of-the-table and extend their unbeaten run to three games. Deanby Main were 4-0 winners over Kingstone United at Tickhill Square. The win keeps Denaby in fourth position. Division Two Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves dropped their first points since October, as they drew 1-1 New Bohemians at the SHU Sports Ground. ROVERS’ UNBEATEN RUN ENDED BY VALIANTS ALCOCK REFLECTS ON BATTLES Having lost just one league match in the last nine, Rovers were looking to continue their unbeaten run, and with Port Vale sat just one place above them in the League One table, a win would see them leapfrog Rob Page’s side . Eddy Lecygne arrived on loan from Stoke and became Darren Ferguson’s latest signing, joining Lynden Gooch who also signed last week. Gooch was included in the starting eleven for the game and made his home debut at the Keepmoat Stadium, while Lecygne occupied a place on the bench. The Sunderland loanee picked up where he left off at Fleetwood on Saturday and looked lively from the word go. He went close when Alcock played him in; twisting and turning the striker cut inside and shot with his left foot forcing Jak Alnwick into a smart save. James Coppinger followed up with a header but Alnwick was there again. Following the two Rovers chances, Port Vale caught the home side on the break. As Matthew Kennedy played in AJ Leitch-Smith a couple of deflections caused some confusion in the Rovers box, before Leitch-Smith dinked the ball over

Stuckmann to put the visitors ahead. Vale went close again minutes later as Kennedy had a free shot on goal from 12 yards but a great reaction save by Stuckmann with his feet denied Vale their second. Richard Chaplow went inches away from getting the equaliser for Rovers when some nice passing invited Gooch to cross into the box. Chaplow bravely went in but his header was just wide. Despite being forced into a change at half time as Stuckmann came off injured, Rovers came out lively in the second half and pressured early on through Gooch and Coppinger. They were appealing for a penalty when Richard Chaplow broke into the box and went down after what looked like a clear push in the back. However the referee said no and waved play on. Unfortunately the visitors doubled their lead and Leitch-Smith doubled his tally on 65 minutes. With Leitch-Smith completely unmarked in the box Hooper picked him out, before he rounded Marko Marosi and blasting the ball into the net. With very little happening Rovers pulled a goal back from nowhere and it was game on for the final five minutes. Cedric Evina

CHARLTON ATHLETIC moved to within one point of the Millers in the Championship table as they ran out victors over Neil Redfearn’s men at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Makienok’s second of the afternoon in the second half gave the home side a mountain to climb before Ademola Lookman’s fourth in stoppage time rubbed salt into Rotherham’s wounds. Following their hard-fought draw at Cardiff City last time out, the Millers made just one change to their starting line-up as Derby loanee Farrend Rawson was recalled at the heart of the Rotherham rearguard after shrugging off a hamstring injury as Tunisian international Aimen Belaid was unavailable because of a groin injury sustained in South Wales. The home faithful were given their first glimpse of Burke, who joined the club last week, while new signing Andrew Shinnie was handed a place on the Millers bench just days after putting pen to paper on a loan deal from Birmingham City. The Millers were quick out of the blocks and they had the first sight of goal when Burke’s incisive cross saw Danny Ward attempt to head goalwards, but he could only glance the ball into the path of Joe Newell, who screwed his effort harmlessly wide of the target. However, the visitors stunned the home faithful by breaking the deadlock with their first foray of note on four minutes.

There looked little danger until Zakarya Bergdich injected pace into the move to show Shay Facey a quick of pair of heels before sliding the ball across the 18-yard box and with no Miller taking charge, Makienok successfully stretched to stroke the ball into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the box giving Lee Camp no chance. However, the Millers responded superbly to the early setback by levelling matters on 11 minutes as Burke crowned his home debut in superb style. Following a period of head tennis where Athletic failed to clear the danger, Paul Green’s pass was controlled superbly by Danny Ward, who played a perfectlyweighted ball, into the advancing run of Burke, who had ghosted away from his marker, and the Forest loanee kept his nerve to slide the ball past Stephen Henderson into the heart of the visitors goal. The home side were buoyed by the equaliser and Danny Ward almost broke clear before Newell took advantage of the Addicks defence backing off in the Millers’ next attack to strike a rasping effort which narrowly cleared the visitors’ crossbar. At the other end, Joe Mattock put his body on the line to block Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s goalbound effort before the Icelandic international stung the palms of Camp with a swirling free-kick from distance in the visitors next attack. Just before the half hour mark, Grant Ward was

Darren Ferguson has said that is likely new boy Chris Neal will make his debut when Rovers host Walsall on Tuesday evening. Neal, aged 30, made a 28 day loan switch from fellow League One side Port Vale and is at the forefront of Ferguson’s thoughts following an injury to regular stopper Thorsten Stuckmann. “Thorsten’s got a badly bruised shoulder so he won’t have a chance of Tuesday or Saturday so you’re probably looking at – best case scenario – him being back for the Sheffield United game but we’ve brought in Chris (Neal) anyway so there’s no such panic there,” opined Ferguson. “He’s ready to play, he needs to get back playing, and he’s not done so for a while. “

Craig Alcock admitted that Rovers’ recent run of digging deep to salvage points may have caught up with them as they slid to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Port Vale. Alcock and his teammates could not overturn a two goal deficit as they had successfully done ten days previously against Gillingham. “I think we’ve got to keep that belief; the last two games may have caught up with us a little bit, “said Alcock. “We’re not doing ourselves many favours because we keep going behind and its just silly little mistakes which we need to cut out and we can build again. We need to give the fans a performance that they can be proud of because, even tonight, they stuck by us and we need to make sure we do something for them. We’re a tight knit group and we’ve just got to make sure we stick together. You go through low spells and good spells, it happens to the best of them – just look at Chelsea – but we’ve got to stick together and come out of it the other side and look forward to Walsall now.” Alcock clung to the fact that Rovers more than matched the high flying Gills and hopes that facing their promotion rivals Walsall will serve as the perfect tonic to banish a poor

run of form at home. “Some teams go through bad spells but it’s about how we come out of it,” he said. “We’ve got a week now until we face Walsall and we move on to that now as anything can happen. We need to kick on and make sure that we put these two results behind us. If anything we can take character and belief from the fact we played well against Gillingham and if anything should have won and now, more than anything, it’s about making the result tonight right.”

bundled over by Jordan Cousins in an inviting position on the edge of the box but following a training ground routine, Burke curled an effort which sailed over the Athletic wall but failed to trouble Henderson as it fizzed wide of the target. There was a moment of controversy when Grant Ward got the better of Jorge Teixeira following a tussle near the touchline but as he looked to advance towards goal, referee Keith Stroud harshly penalised the Tottenham loanee to bring his run to an abrupt end. With half-time approaching, Rawson superbly intercepted a through ball to prevent the Addicks breaking clear and the Millers turned defence into attack paving the way for Newell to swing a ball into the box and after Charlton failed to clear the danger, Grant Ward pounced on the loose ball before cutting inside with menace, but the youngster fluffed his lines when he blazed his shot harmlessly over from a promising position. However, the Millers suffered a body blow when Charlton regained the lead on the stroke of half time when Henderson’s ball from the back saw Cousins’ slide-rule pass release Gudmundsson, who shrugged off the attentions of Kirk Broadfoot, before playing a perfectly weighted pass across the face of goal and Vetokele made no mistake to tap home from close range. At the interval, Millers gaffer Neil Redfearn introduced Argentine

striker Luciano Becchio into the fray for his AEESEAL New York Stadium return following a productive loan spell last season. The move almost paid dividends at the start of the second half as Becchio’s arcing run worked the space for Newell to flash a pass into the feet of Danny Ward, who cut inside to curl a left-footed effort which brought a flying save out of Henderson, before the ball rolled to safety. At the other end, the home fans’ had their hearts in their mouths when the Rotherham rearguard made a meal out of clearing the danger and Addicks skipper Johnnie Jackson fizzed a low effort which whistled narrowly wide of the target. Just before the hour mark, Morgan Fox became the first to see yellow for dissent before Danny Ward’s speculative effort from long range was straight down the throat of Henderson. Moments later, Broadfoot and Makienok became the latest to incur the wrath of the referee as they were both cautioned before Mattock’s clipped cross was headed down by sub Clarke-Harris into the path of Becchio, just yards out, but the ex-Leeds striker was unable to make a telling connection. Minutes later, the Millers had Camp for keeping them in the clash when Vetokele’s smart turn on the edge of the box saw Rawson haul down the frontman and Jackson almost made the home side pay with the resultant free-kick but the home

‘keeper superbly tipped his effort over the bar. Charlton did not have to wait long before adding a third goal when fGudmundsson swung a delightful centre and Makienok ghosted away from his closest marker in the tightest of spaces in the six-yard box to power a header into the heart of the home goal. However, Redfearn’s men were given a lifeline just minutes later when ClarkeHarris got on the wrong side of Teixeira, who ushered the striker over in the box, and referee Stroud, following seconds of contemplation, pointed to the spot. Despite dusting himself down to take the penalty himself, Clarke-Harris failed to make it count when he blasted the spot kick high into the visitors faithful behind the goal. The ex-Oldham striker looked to make amends when he firstly latched onto a loose ball to drill a low effort which had Henderson scrambling across goal as it fizzed narrowly wide of the target before heading wide from Richie Smallwood’s corner in the next Millers’ attack of note. The Millers knew it wasn’t going to be their day when firstly Becchio rose highest to meet sub Shinnie’s corner but Henderson stood up tall to block his downward header before sub Ademola Lookman made an immediate impact from the bench to roll in Charlton’s fourth in the dying seconds of the game.

broke down the left before crossing a dangerous ball deep to the back post. In bizarre fashion Alnwick couldn’t keep the ball out and it found the top corner! The home side pushed for the equaliser, Conor Grant struck a fierce shot at goal forcing Alnwick into a very good save and Liam Mandeville couldn’t quite find the follow up.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 SEASIDE ROCKY FOR BLUNT BLADES NIGEL FRUSTRATED The Blades left the seaside on Tuesday night with a point following a battle in tough conditions. Both sides had chances throughout the game but the rain, wind and pitch contributed. 750 Blades fans braved the conditions as United added a point to the total to stay amongst the division’s top teams. Chief Adkins made three changes. Blackpool old boy Basham missed out through injury, as did Done; Woolford dropped to the bench. In came Baxter, Sammon and CampbellRyce, who began on the left flank. The Blades created a chance inside the first minute, Sharp and Brayford linking up ahead of a Coutts cross for Sammon, who sidefooted wide, whilst the tricky,

bouncy surface and a fast-pace made for an entertaining start. On three minutes, Redshaw’s flicked header from McAlister’s cross was also wide. Sharp halfvolleyed over after racing onto a Coutts pass from right to left, whilst Long did very well to shovel a long-range blaster from McAllister wide, particularly as the ball may have taken a deflection. Around the 15-minute mark the Blades got on top and worked a number of opportunities. Campbell-Ryce played inside for Sammon to lay off but Sharp curled wide with goalkeeper Doyle at full stretch. Campbell-Ryce then stung the palms of the stopper from distance and then, following Brayford’s ball into the box, Sammon took a steadying touch

before forcing Doyle into an impressive reaction save. The only other chance of the first half, which saw both teams trying to get on the front foot, was a free-kick from Yeates which curled into the arms of Long. Blackpool began the second half with a few chances. A Potts drive was over, Evatt headed wide a corner at the near post and McAlister was crowded out after a Philliskirk lay-off. United’s first opportunity after the interval saw Baxter shoot over after a Coutts run Substitute Ikpeazu shrugged off Baxter to curl a shot onto the roof of the net, whilst United’s first change saw Adams replace Sharp, who appeared to be hobbling. A great move on 74 minutes, the ball shifting from

right to left, almost brought United a goal. Coutts, Adams and Sammon were all involved before a shot from CampbellRyce saw goalkeeper Doyle save and hold at the second attempt. Soon after, Collins headed over a Baxter corner. The strength of Ikpeazu gave the United backline more to think about late on and tired legs, from both sides, in the rain saw the game open up. Both sides had half-chances on the break, whilst McEveley blocked from Norris as the game entered injurytime. The final chance summed up the game, with Norris volleying well over, whilst an indication of United’s intent saw the Blackpool goalkeeper win the man of the match award.

Nigel Adkins admitted Tuesday’s goalless draw against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road was ‘frustrating’, but praised the application of his players in testing conditions. On a wet and windy evening at the seaside, United created the better chances on a heavy pitch, but found Tangerines goalkeeper Colin Doyle in inspired form. Reflecting on the point, Adkins, who felt his side were denied a clear penalty in the opening 45 minutes remarked: “The conditions were testing and the pitch was energy sapping, but we started brightly and their goalkeeper, who went on to be named man of the match, made a couple of good saves from Conor Sammon who looked really sharp. But we should have had a penalty. It was the clearest foul of the game when Conor was pulled down in the box, but it wasn’t given and the match became a war of attrition, with both sides putting an awful lot into it. We had seven or eight chances in the

first-half and towards the end we got Jamal Campbell-Ryce more involved and had a few opportunities, but the goalmouths were horrendous and the ball bobbled about before the goalkeeper made the saves.” The Gaffer added: “We have got a point and a clean sheet, but we came here looking for all three. We showed an attacking intent, Sammon and Sharp linked up well and could have scored but we wanted to win the game and it is frustrating that we didn’t. It was tough, it was the type of game where one bit of magic, a mistake or a referring decision would decide the game and unfortunately things didn’t quite go for us.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 OWLS CRASH OUT OF FA CUP

The Owls were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup after a 3-2 to defeat to Shrewsbury Town at Greenhous Meadow. Lewis McGugan opened the scoring inside 20 minutes for the visitors after his long range free kick flew past everyone in the box before outfoxing goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler at his back post. The Shrews equalised eleven minutes into the second half after Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro nodded home from Andy Mangan’s deep cross. Wednesday regained the lead with 14 minutes left on the clock, when McGugan grabbed his second of the afternoon with a sweetly struck shot from distance. With three minutes remaining of normal time the home side were awarded a penalty

which was superbly saved by Lewis Price, but Shaun Whalley was on hand to dispatch the rebound. And deep into stoppage time the League One side scored the winner through defender Jack Grimmer who slammed home a header from less than six yards out. Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal made nine changes to his starting XI for the trip to Shropshire. Vincent Sasso and Gary Hooper were the two players in the line-up who started last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Reading, with midfield duo McGugan and Marco Matias both involved after long injury lay-offs. There was also a debut for Joe Bennett on the left hand side of the defence, his first appearance since joining on loan from Aston Villa. Wednesday started the

tie on the front foot as midfielder McGugan lashed over from 20 yards out inside six minutes. The blustery conditions were always going to be a difficult master at the Greenhous Meadow, but on 19 minutes the Owls broke the deadlock. Matias was brought down around ten yards outside of the penalty area, with the lively McGugan’s direct free-kick whizzing past those in the box before squeezing inside Leutwiler’s far post. With the hosts struggling to make their mark on the match, McGugan was again involved as he whipped another ball in from the left that deflected off Hooper’s knee before looping just over. The visitors were afforded two more chances before the break to add to their lead. First was Matias who had his powerful effort parried to safety by Leutwiler, before striker Lucas Joao headed over from a dangerous Sougou cross. The hosts emerged from the dressing room a rejuvenated side as they immediately threatened through Larnell Cole, but his shot went straight at keeper Price. On 56 minutes Shrewsbury drew level with only

their second shot of the match. Mangan escaped his defender down the right hand side before crossing to the back post for Akpa Akpro to nod home from close range. Level in the match, the Owls came close to retaking their lead as Jose Semedo darted through the middle of the park before forcing Leutwiler into a diving save. At the other end Akpa Akpro dodged the offside trap before bearing down on goal, but Price produced a smart stop to deny the Shrews goalscorer from doubling his tally. With the tension building heading towards the final period of the match, step forward McGugan to fire Wednesday back into the lead on 76 minutes. After receiving the ball from 25 yards out, the midfielder couldn’t have hit it any sweeter as his shot flew off his boot before swerving inside the goalkeeper’s right hand post. However the League One side managed to hit back in the dying minutes of the game after Akpa Akpro was brought down by Vincent Sasso for a penalty. Price pulled off a sensational save to his right to keep out Akpa Akpro’s spot kick, but could do nothing about the rebound which Whalley tucked home. With six minutes of stoppage time added on, Shrewsbury struck on 97 minutes through young defender Grimmer, who turned home from close range to send the Shropshire side into the fifth round of the cup.
