ALBERT SNODGRASS

A guy stopped my in the street and asks for the quickest way to Rotherham. “Are you on foot or in the car?”, I asked. He said, “In the car.” “That’s the quickest way.”, I replied. What’s the secret to telling jokes about clocks? Timing. I just found out that the guy who stole my journal has died. My thoughts are with his family. I’d love to live in an old, disused lighthouse. I don’t want anything flashy. A new report has concluded that dog owners are more outgoing than cat owners. Hardly surprising. You have to take a dog for walks. My girlfriend disliked my obsession with Japanese food, sushi left me. Silence is golden, unless you have kids. Then it’s just suspicious. My wife phoned me, panting and breathless. “Where are you?” she moaned. “I’m at the pub.” I replied. She said, “I think the baby’s coming!” I said, “She won’t get in, she’s under-age.” Last night I was at a pub when suddenly a fight broke out. This one guy picked up a chair and tried to hit the other guy with it when suddenly the second guy ducked and to my amazement, picked up the whole bar and hit the first guy with it. I thought to myself, ‘Wow, what a counter attack.’ I was wondering the other day what our parents must have done for entertainment before television and smart phones were popular and affordable. I asked my 38 brothers and sisters if they had any ideas, but none of them could suggest an answer either.

The tournament continues at venues up and down the country, returning to Yorkshire for night 10 at Sheffield Arena on Thursday 7th April. Tickets purchased online and through the ticket hotline are priced £24.20, £38.50 & £44 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £23.10, £36.75 & £42 including booking fee. The £700,000 Betway Premier League, televised live on Sky Sports, sees an initial ten-player field competing across four months at 16 arena venues to contest for the prestigious title. MICHAEL SMITH will make his Betway Premier League debut in 2016 and Robert Thornton returns to the ten-player field for the biggest-ever season in the tournament's history. Former World Youth Champion Smith sees his rise to eighth in the world rankings, alongside his runs to the Grand Slam of Darts semi-finals and World Championship quarter-finals, rewarded with a coveted place in the £700,000 event. Reigning champion Gary Anderson, who defeated Michael van Gerwen in the 2015 final at The O2 in London, will join his Dutch rival, Adrian Lewis and six-time Premier League champion Phil Taylor as the four automatic selections for the event. The ever-popular Raymond van Barneveld, the 2014 Premier League champion and a World Championship semi-finalist this week, is joined by 2015 Premier League semi-finalist Dave

Chisnall as Sky Sports Wildcard selections. Robert Thornton's victory in the World Grand Prix last October sees him return to the Premier League, having previously competed in the tournament in 2013 and 2014. Former Premier League champion James Wade and flamboyant former World Championship and UK Open finalist Peter Wright complete the ten-player field, with the season set to begin on Thursday February 4 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds. Play continues across the opening nine weeks before the bottom two players are eliminated following Week Nine's Judgement Night. The remaining eight players face off once more in the battle for Play-Off places, with Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena set to stage a league night for the first time before the semi-finals and final take place at The O2 in London on Thursday May 19.

PUB CLOSURES FALL, BUT O ROMEO, ROMEO! WHEREFORE ART ANOTHER BEER TAX CUT THOU ROMEO? NEEDED SAYS CAMRA Pub campaigners are welcoming a fall in the number of pub closures in the UK, but have called on the government to cut beer tax to help reinforce the fragile recovery. The figures published by CAMRA, compiled by independent research company CGA Strategy, show that 27 pubs a week closed in the second half of 2015, compared to 29 a week in the previous six months. A report from the Centre of Economics and Business Research last year showed pubs and drinkers would benefit from a cut in beer tax - conclusions supported by the improving figures. It found that beer would have increased by 16p a pint, more than 1,000 additional pubs would have closed, 750 million fewer pints would have been sold and 26,000 jobs would have not been created had the beer tax not been cut in 2014. CAMRA is now calling on the government to continue and strengthen its support for pubs

by further cutting tax to help keep beer affordable and pubs open. More than 3,000 CAMRA members have already lobbied their MPs to call for a reduction in beer duty and the Campaign is urging as many people as possible to make their views known via camra.org.uk/ beertax2016 Particularly encouraging is news that closures of local community pubs have fallen, down from 26 closures a week to 20. Community locals are particularly vital to the overall wellbeing of their users, as shown by CAMRA's recently released research into the benefits of pub going. Tim Page, chief executive of CAMRA said: "The latest figures show that the work of campaigners across CAMRA, the wider pub and beer industry and the government is taking effect and arresting the decline in the number of pubs being lost every week. "However it's a fragile recovery which could very quickly be

reversed if the government fails to build on this positive development and misses the chance to support the British pub and beer industry by reducing tax again. "The report produced by CEBR for CAMRA at the start of 2015 showed how cutting beer tax would have a great economic benefit for the country and the reduction in closure numbers is further proof that the Chancellor's decision was a good one. "It's pleasing to see that our campaigning to protect community pubs is having an effect, with closure numbers reducing. Local pubs are vital to their communities and the wellbeing of their users, as a recent report from Oxford University showed. As well as reducing tax the government can continue to support these pubs by strengthening national planning regulations and supporting local groups seeking to list pubs as Assets of Community Value."

Valentine’s Day, the day of love and romance. As we all try to rhyme something with ‘roses are red and violets are blue’, Guide Dogs are going weak at the knees for one of their newest recruits, puppy Romeo. Romeo was named through the charity’s Name a Puppy scheme which offers groups, individuals and companies the opportunity to be part of their life changing work. By donating or fundraising £5,000 you can name a pup and help it set off on an incredible journey to become a working guide dog, hearing about its adventures along the way. You will even meet that puppy too! In front of puppy Romeo lie several challenges he will need to overcome. His volunteer Puppy Walker and staff from Guide Dogs will be supporting him on his incredible journey, so that one day he can become a working guide dog and provide independence and mobility for someone who is blind or partially sighted. One thing is for sure however, he is bound to melt a few hearts along the way. If you are interested to find out more about Guide Dogs’ Name a Puppy scheme, please contact us on nameapuppy@guidedogs.org.uk or call 0118 983 0190. Website: www.guidedogs. org.uk

COUPLE CELEBRATE LIFE AND LOVE ON VALENTINE’S DAY AFTER CANCER FIGHT A couple from Sheffield are able to spend Valentine’s Day together, and many more to come, thanks to the regions dedicated cancer hospital. Tom Bolland (28) and his wife, Becca will celebrate this poignant day on the 14th February after Becca received treatment at Weston Park Hospital for cervical cancer. In October 2012, just before Tom and Becca were due to embark on their travels around Australia, Becca visited her GP with symptoms she wanted looking at before they went away. But in a worrying turn of events, Becca was referred to Jessops Hospital in Sheffield for a biopsy where an aggressive cancerous tumour on her cervix was almost immediately discovered. Suddenly the couples outlook for the future looked incredibly different and within days Becca began a course of intense Radiotherapy at Weston Park Hospital followed by chemotherapy. Tom, who met Becca through their mutual love of music, said, “ I can’t forget the day we were told that Becca had cancer- it’s like being hit in the belly with a big rock and someone spinning you round and asking you to run straight.” “I’d never really been through anything like that before, so of course I thought the worst, I think I even cried once on my Mum. The one thing I do remember was my mum saying, ‘but she’s at Weston Park, don’t worry’”. "I had no idea what she was talking about but I took her word for it nevertheless and it wasn’t until Becca’s treatment started that I understood completely.” “Some of the best humans I’ve ever encountered work at Weston Park Hospital and for their care, we will be forever grateful.” After surgery and a blood transfusion on Christmas Eve of 2012, Becca was told there was now no sign of the cancer, and although spreading was inevitable, for now she was in remission. Tom, a Financial Advisor at Aviva, is now determined to raise money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, to say thank you for allowing him a future with his wife. Having already signed up to complete the Great North Run and Sheffield 10k in September, Tom is hoping that through matched-funding from fundraising events at Aviva, his final total will top the £750 mark. Tom continued, “I can’t name all the incredible staff individually but it’s thanks to them that I still get to argue with Becca about what’s for tea and about the price of new bedding. I get to listen to her tell me about silver and gold shoes and show me pictures of them 100 times a week without actually buying them. I get to take out her contact lenses and put her in bed after a Saturday night on the town and I still get to listen to her tell me the flat is freezing- when it really isn’t.”

“I’m super grateful Weston Park Hospital gave me the chance to do all that and even though there is still difficult times ahead, I worry a lot less knowing that this fantastic hospital is just up the road.” The couple, who got married at the Weston Park bandstand after the name and area held so many poignant memories for them, are now looking forward to a future together whilst attending yearly check-up appointments at the hospital. The charity needs to raise over £1.9 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep patients at the forefront of cancer treatment. This year, the cancer charity are encouraging supporters to get active and run, walk, ride or swim to help raise vital funds as part of TeamWestonPark. Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross said,” Tom and his wife Becca have been through a rollercoaster of emotions over the last few years but it’s great to see that Tom is turning the negatives into positives and raising funds for the cancer charity.” “Valentine’s Day will be a special day for thousands of couples across the region who have fought or are still fighting cancer together and we’re encouraging people to follow in Tom’s footsteps and sign up to an active challenge in 2016.” “Whether in memory of a loved one or to say thank you for care received at Weston Park Hospital, every penny raised enables us to continue supporting lifesaving projects and improve cancer services across the region." FAIR EMPLOYER CHARTER LET’S ALL GO RIDE A BIKE! The first initiative of its kind in the country to have been led by businesses, the Fair Employer Charter consists of a series of pledges around working culture and conditions. More than 25 organisations have already signed up to the Charter, which was developed by manufacturer Gripple, the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Our Fair City campaign. The launch, at Gripple’s Old West Gun Works site, featured representatives from the likes of The University of Sheffield, BirchenallHowden, AAG Systems, and Sheffield Citizens Advice. Sharon Squires, Director at Sheffield First and Our Fair City Champion, said: ‘It was great to see so many well-known Sheffield employers come together for the launch of this positive, forward-thinking Charter. Unlike previous efforts elsewhere, Sheffield’s Fair Employer Charter has been driven by the private sector and is geared towards achieving practical aims

that help businesses reach their own goals. Now that the Charter has been officially launched, we hope that more organisations will come on board and help us in our bid to make Sheffield fairer.’ Hugh Facey MBE, founder and chairman of employee-owned manufacturer Gripple, said: ‘I am really passionate about the Fair Employer Charter and would urge firms across Sheffield to sign up to it. Gripple is a great example of how building an open working environment, investing in staff and treating people with trust can motivate them in ways that deliver better business results. The measures in the Charter are what all Sheffield employers should be adopting as minimum requirements – we can all do more to make Sheffield the fairest city in the UK.’ Organisations large and small can sign up to the Fair Employer Charter online at www.ourfaircity.co.uk.

Never learned to ride a bike? Or need to build your confidence? Free Women only Sessions held every Monday morning 10-12 midday in High Hazels Park. These are organised by a partnership of Darnall WellBeing and run by trained Pedal Ready cycle instructors. Other Learn to Ride, Cycle confidence and Road Confidence sessions are held in other parts of the city eg Endcliffe Park, Hillsborough Park, Abbeyfield Park. They are currently funded through Sheffield Cycleboost, supported by Sheffield City Council. Bikes are provided and the sessions are free. To book contact Pedal Ready on 0114 2412775 or email admin@ pedalready.co.uk Janet learnt to ride a bike through the free sessions says this: My mum always said “I was too nosey to ride a bike” so I didn’t. When I saw free lessons advertised in High Hazels Park just for ladies, I decided that even though I was 68 it was never too late to learn. So the following Monday off I went to be met by Pam and Simone, who made me most welcome. I was told it was all down to balance, so off I went with a wobble, but

managed to stay on. By week three I was pedalling round the park. Not confident to take my hand off the handlebar to ring the bell, I relied on my voice to warn people I was coming! As the weeks went on, I got better. The only problem was the right turn – the left was fine. I wobbled and almost fell off which means I could only do a circular route! Once you have got more confidence and the trainers are satisfied, you can move on to do road skills to prepare you for further outings. I have made new friends, met some lovely patient ladies, Pam, Simone and Avril who encourage you and give you confidence to keep going. I have purchased a cycle under the Cycleboost scheme, but unfortunately I have had an operation on my foot earlier in the year, which delayed my progress. So I am back on a refresher course with the patient ladies. Don’t know if they are pleased to see me again, but maybe they are as they welcomed me back and had missed me! So I say if you want to learn, whatever your age, come and join us’. For further information see www.pedalready.co.uk

VOLUNTEERS OUR WEBSITE LOCAL WILDLIFE TRUSTS NEEDED Visit the Sheffield 50+ website www.sheffield50plus.org.uk

Volunteer drivers at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust covered over 1.2 million miles last year, helping patients to make their hospital appointments across the region. The volunteers use their cars to drive patients to outpatient appointments, with over 130 drivers currently involved and making over 20,000 journeys each month. Jo Rawnsley, Patient Transport Service volunteer, said: ‘Our volunteer car service drivers offer a valuable service to the Trust, supporting the wider work of our non-emergency Patient Transport Service and helping eligible patients to get to and from important medical appointments. The scheme offers the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills, face new challenges and gain experience volunteering in the NHS. Many of our volunteers have made lifelong friends through their work at the Trust and list meeting new people and doing something worthwhile to help others as some of the key benefits of getting involved. They take patients who struggle for transport to vital medical appointments to try to reduce missed appointments.’ To join the Trust’s volunteer car service, drivers need to be aged 18 or over and hold a valid, full UK driving licence with no more than three penalty points on it. They need access to a car with a minimum of four doors and have to undergo background checks and a health screening medical. Full training is provided and volunteers are reimbursed for the cost of miles covered under the scheme. MERCURYJOBS& MERCURYJOBS JOBS& &LEGAL LEGAL STONE-LAYING CEREMONY CELEBRATES CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS ON SHEFFIELD’S SECOND UTC

Civic leaders, educationalists and employers attended a stone-laying ceremony last week to mark construction progress on Sheffield’s second University Technical College. The £10 million UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park campus is due to open this September and will specialise in healthcare and sports sciences, and computing. Construction of the four-storey facility on the Olympic Legacy Park on Attercliffe Common is progressing well. The foundations and drainage have been completed, and more than half of the steel frame is in place. Work will start on the concrete floor slabs next. Last week on February 4th, a stone-laying ceremony took place led by Rt. Hon. Richard Caborn, Olympic Legacy Park Project Lead, and Councillor Julie Dore, Sheffield City Council Leader. Representatives from UTC Sheffield, The Sheffield College, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and

Industry, and employers supporting the project, including Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, BirchenhallHowden and Sheffield City Trust Group, attended. Rt. Hon. Richard Caborn, Project Lead, Olympic Legacy Park, said: “The stone-laying ceremony celebrates an exciting milestone for the UTC and, indeed, for the whole Olympic Legacy Park. The UTC will play a pivotal role within the Olympic Legacy Park. It will provide young people with a well-rounded education and specific skills so that they can go forward, as the next generation, and develop ground-breaking innovations for health and wellbeing.” Nick Crew, Executive Principal, UTC Sheffield, said: “I want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to our key sponsors and supporters. The way that the UTC has been embraced in this city has been phenomenal, leading to an amazing second facility for Sheffield that will offer great careers for young people across the region in sectors that are growing.” The facility is being built by BAM Construction and has been designed by Bond Bryan Architects. It will have capacity for 600 students aged 14 to 19 from across Sheffield City Region. The Sheffield College is the lead sponsor. Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce are co–sponsors. More than 50 employers are supporting UTC Sheffield overall. Places are still available this September for young people to join the UTC at the age of 14 in Year 10 and 16 in Year 12. Visit http://olp.utcsheffield.org.uk/ or call 0114 2603970. Recruitment will be phased over three years. The catchment area is Sheffield City Region, which includes South Yorkshire and parts of North Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Employers supporting the second UTC include the Sheffield Eagles, Sheffield Sharks, Sheffield International Venues, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, University of Sheffield, Goldfish Systems, Yoomee, Mundojumbo, The Better With Data Society, Home Office, Team Active, BirchenhallHowden, Scrapbook Development and Sero Consulting.

Celebrating a 90th Anniversary is usually an ideal occasion for looking back but not at Crookes Social. As manager Maurice Champeau says, “This famous Sheffield club is looking forward with great excitement to introducing the plans we have made for the future.” The fact that Crookes has employed a professional manager shows their ambition. Maurice has decades of experience managing and developing successful pubs around the region and joined the club because “Crookes is unique and has a great deal of potential going for it. Not only do we have the lounge area, we are lucky to have one of the best concert rooms in the area with a fully sprung wooden dance floor and a maximum capacity of 500 people”. Crookes Social is a very attractive venue; the luxuriously furnished lounge overlooks their own bowling green .There is a large snooker room with two full

size tables and a separately located pool table and darts. There are several function rooms for hire for private events. The club offers weekly entertainment with live bands, solo acts, boxing and wrestling, cabaret nights and special events such as the recent Mercury Awards and the forthcoming Sheffield Wednesday League Cup anniversary evening, providing customers with a varied and enjoyable selection of entertainment; plus bingo is played on four nights and Sunday lunch every week. In fact Crookes social has a history of providing great live entertainment. It is the venue where Sheffield’s own Def Leppard appeared and Sheffield singers Paul Carrick and John Parr have also performed. This Saturday, 13th February sees a superb live act, Point Blank appearing and on Saturday 20th it’s the Platinum Band. Crookes Social is actively encouraging non-members to visit and has introduced

a host of independent weekly events and activities for the local and wider communities. These include a slimming club, a fitness club, two different self defence meetings, a twice weekly dance class, community meetings and even their own real ale annual beer festival. One of the few clubs to introduce real ale - the famous Barnsley Bitter now brewed by Sheffield‘s own Stancills brewery, Crookes also offers Worthington,Stones and Carling from Molson Coors plus John Smiths fom Heineken. You can find out more about visiting Crookes Social Club on their website and Facebook page, or why not just call in? It is easy to find just off the Crookes shopping area. DRIVING IN STRONG WINDS Sudden gusts can catch out even the most experienced driver Wind rarely blows steadily, and sudden gusts can catch you out no matter how experienced a driver you are. Expect sudden gusts at any time but particularly on open stretches of road, when passing bridges or gaps in hedges or when overtaking high-sided vehicles. Whether it's strong winds, snow, floods or fog, if extreme weather is forecast it is always best to avoid travelling unless your journey is absolutely necessary. There are three potential problems to be aware of if you're driving in high winds You can be blown off course Keep both hands on the wheel, particularly if you're being buffeted by the wind or the slipstreams of other vehicles and anticipate stronger winds and gusts on exposed stretches of road or when passing high-sided vehicles. It's important to keep your speed down too. The faster you're travelling the further off-

course you're likely to drift in a sudden gust before you get the vehicle back under control.

Other vehicles can be blown into your path High-sided vehicles and caravans are most affected by high winds but sudden gusts can blow any vehicle off course. Keep your distance from all other vehicles and take particular care around cyclists, motorcyclists and horse-riders. If you break down on the motorway or on any busy road in gusty weather it's important to bear in mind that lorries and other high-sided vehicles could be blown off course suddenly and may veer onto the hard shoulder. It's safer to move to a safe location away from the vehicle rather than wait in the car to be rescued. There could be trees or other debris in the road Inevitably, some trees or branches will come down when winds are high. If you see twigs

or small branches in the road there could easily be a tree or large branch in the road around the next bend. Hitting debris like this at speed could be fatal so it's important to keep your speed down and drive with great care particularly on country roads early in the morning. Trees can partially fall too and hang above the road, sometimes above the sweep of the headlights making them very difficult to spot.

If you do have to drive In case of an emergency, always carry a fully-charged mobile phone and warm, weatherproof clothing. Plan journeys carefully and check both weather and traffic bulletins regularly – low speed limits or even temporary closures may be imposed on exposed bridges and road closures due to falling debris or accidents will be more frequent.

THE HUGE NITRO CIRCUS LIVE SET TO MAKE SHEFFIELD DEBUT Direct from sell out shows across the globe, the world’s greatest action sports show - Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus Live - will return to the UK and Ireland this summer for its first ever UK outdoor stadium tour. The world’s biggest live action sports show will visit 11 first-time markets including Bramall Lane in Sheffield on Saturday 18th June 2016. Tickets for the tour are on sale on Friday, 12th February from 10am via www.nitrocircus.live

Fans from across the UK will be given the opportunity to see the most explosive event in extreme sports and witness death-defying stunts, amazing tricks and unbelievable world firsts that have yet to be seen (even in competition). Michael Porra, Nitro Circus CEO and creative director, said: “We are so excited to bring the biggest, most daring action sports production ever staged to the UK. Our insane group of athletes perform stunts that you literally

cannot see anywhere else on the planet. We’re constantly pushing each other to break records and do things that people previously thought was physically impossible. We had an epic time in the UK this year, and we were pumped on just how many people came out to see us. Now we’re ready to show a whole bunch of new cities and towns what we’re all about. This is our first series of UK outdoor shows and we’re performing at some awesome outdoor locations.” Nitro’s cast of daredevils, the greatest action sports stars on the planet, will perform the most incredible choreographed riding routines ever in freestyle motocross (FMX), BMX, skate and much more. Highlights include the explosive “Nitro Bomb” featuring all riders flipping simultaneously. Plus, during FMX trains, riders will slice through the air wheel-to-wheel, mere inches apart. Nitro Circus athletes will also brave the (in)famous 40-foot Giganta ramp, which will launch a host of ridiculous contraptions like trikes, a penny farthing, a lounge chair, a bathtub and much more. All of this mayhem in one show, requiring more than 15 trucks and 50 crew

members to transport and set up, adds up to a theatrical spectacular area fans have never experienced before. This will be one of the biggest, if not the most massive, entertainment production ever to come to venues across the UK. Nitro Circus Live has sold out legendary arenas such as the O2 in London, AccorHotels Arena (formerly Bercy Arena) in Paris and Madison Square Garden in New York. More than 35,000 people packed Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium, site of the 2010 soccer World Cup final, for a massive 2014 show; 45,000 filled Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, the second highest attendance of any touring act at that venue. Now, fans from across the UK do not want to miss their chance to see Nitro Circus Live. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, 12 February via www. nitrocircus.live Sheffield United Vice Chairman Martin Green, who was responsible for bringing Nitro Circus to Bramall Lane through his extensive contacts in the entertainment and leisure sector, said: “This is a major development for the Club as its seeks to make full use, year round of its growing facilities at the Bramall Lane Stadium. “The introduction of our new format pitch enables us to stage and attract high profile events such as Nitro Circus during the close season bringing additional financial benefits which will help generate a positive economic impact for the Clun and the playing side as well as a boost for

The lead single “Bleeding Love” is regarded as Leona’s most successful release, which spent a staggering seven weeks on the number one top spot in the UK. Amazingly, this single was the biggest selling single of 2007 in Britain which in turn became the biggest selling hit of 2008 worldwide. Leona Lewis has won a ridiculous amount of awards to include two MOBO Awards, MTV Awards, a

IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE PLUG TODAY... Preview: Eliza and the Bear, The Plug Tuesday 16th February By Amira Nazir Hot, up and coming London five piece, Eliza and the Bear, are set to grace the Plug’s stage on the 16th of February. Said to be a band to watch closely this year, the cheery indie pop quintet recently released their eagerly anticipated third single, ‘It Gets Cold’, from their forthcoming selftitled and much acclaimed album. Gaining momentum since 2014, the band have been making waves having recently receiving attention from Radio 1 after signing to major label to Capitol. Sounding like the cheery offspring of bands such as the Lumineers, Mumford and Sons and even at times influences from more leftfield territories such as the Flaming Lips. The lineup reflects their solid traditional music values, with all the usual suspects you’d expect in an indie band: James Kellegher (lead vocals, guitar), Callie Noakes (vocals, keyboards), Martin Dukelow (vocals, guitar), Chris Brand (bass), Paul Kevin Jackson (drums). For fans of uplifting, melodious, jaunty indie pop, EATB provide a feast of jolly riffs and James Kelleger’s vocals jump between cracked to choirboy. The general vibe of this band’s music is starting the party and you can definitley see them ripping festivals up this summer, catch them before they go from hot to scorched. The band not only offer a lot of promise but with their already solid catalogue of tunes, you’re guaranteed good times at one of their live shows. With the hit single, ‘Upon the North’ on the setlist the crowd is sure to run wild and with tunes such as ‘Lion’s heart’ and ‘Make it on your own’ when they play the Plug, they will surely ‘Light it up’. KENDALL CALLING ANNOUNCES HUGE HEADLINERS FOR 2016 FESTIVAL Having sold out their 10th birthday edition a whopping 19 weeks in advance last year, Kendal Calling returns to the beautiful Lake District in 2016 with huge headliners Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Rudimental, Madness and The Charlatans. One of Manchester’s finest musical sons Noel Gallagher will be bringing a catalogue of festivalready anthems to the fields with his High Flying Birds. Exactly 20 years to the week since Oasis’s seminal Knebworth and Loch Lomand shows, Noel will take to the stage at Kendal Calling for what is sure to be one of the festivals defining moments. Expect cuts from his two hugely acclaimed solo records plus some old favourites as a genuine musical icon graces the Lake District with his mighty anthems. . Chart-topping drum and bass crossover kings Rudimental’s high octane, party sets have cemented their reputation as one of the best live acts around. Last year’s sophomore album ‘We The Generation’ featuring huge collaborations with the likes of Ed Sheeran and Dizzee Rascal whilst debut album ‘Home’ catapulted the band into the mainstream and captured the hearts of the nation’s youth. Celebrating 40 years since their formation, London legends Madness are the ultimate sing along band and their hit laden set is sure to include the likes of ‘Baggy Trousers’, ‘One Step Beyond’ and ‘Our House’. Suggs, Carl and the Madness boys know how to work the crowd and these consummate showmen’s career spanning set will be a summer festival highlight. A year on from their triumphant return with landmark album ‘Modern Nature’ and five years on from the founding of singer Tim Burgess’ festival favourite Tim Peaks Diner, The Charlatans return to Kendal Calling as special guest Thursday headliners. Expect hits galore as these North West heroes grace the stage and Tim pops up over the weekend to deliver dj sets and the finest cherry pie and coffee at Tim Peaks Diner. Tim Burgess, Charlatans singer and founder of Tim Peaks Diner comments: "As ever, I'm really looking forward to Kendal Calling. The sixth year in a row for me, the second time The Charlatans will have headlined and this year is the fifth year for Tim Peaks. It's going to be an extra special four days. See you there!" ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve recently been asked to compile a number of regular features for top angling weekly magazine Angler’s Mail, and now that I’ve had the first couple published, I wondered if you might be interested in finding out a bit more about them? The particular article in question is called ‘Venue Expert’ and leads the ‘Where to fish’ section designed to showcase a number of fisheries throughout the UK each week. The brief is to construct a simple double page spread (DPS) with a high impact lead image, a few tips, and good information about both the featured fishery, and a guaranteed winning method. With a couple under my belt, and a feel for the style required, I can briefly summarise what went on… My first expert was a fine chap named Ashley Pulley, who gamely offered himself up to showcase Baden Hall Fishery in Staffordshire, a premium carp complex, packed with fish to over 50lb! I wanted to put the emphasis on Middle Pool, where a winter carp approaching 20lb is a real possibility, and asked Ash to oblige. We arranged to meet on a bitterly cold December day so that he could help me put together the article. The winter weather wasn’t encouraging when I got out of bed to drive to the fishery, but as I’d already had to rearrange once, I wasn’t going to mess about, and set off for the venue. Arriving a short time later, Ashley had already been fishing for an hour, but best of all, he a brace of fish resting quietly in his landing nets to get the ‘Grip ‘n Grin’ catch shot in the bag; perfect! After we had taken the stock shots, we discussed his baits, rigs and tactics, and aligned each photograph to the planned storyboard (you can’t just turn up you know!) having taken hundreds of images to be able to select the most appropriate. Finally, I wanted a shot from the water, facing Ashley as he landed fish, and within an hour, he had achieved that too, so we had all we need…awesome angling! My first ‘Venue Expert’ knocked off within a couple of hours…. easy!

My next expert, Dru Lunney, is an ardent predator angler, and a resident guru when it came to Rudyard Lake, also in Staffordshire, where the intention was to catch pike on deadbaits. Once again, an early start saw me meet Dru and his granddad at the venue, and as I unloaded the camera kit, I noticed that they were already fishing; what chance of one in the net again, ready and waiting? Sadly not, so after initial introductions, I asked Dru about his top tips and suggested some appropriate images which would fit. After a couple of hours of setting up pictures on the bank, close up of rigs and bait, scenic shots and action shots, the only image we hadn’t got was the ‘Wow’ lead, and the catch shot. So we waited. And waited. And waited… Eventually, some hours later, as I stooped to take a macro image of his bite indicator, it moved. We both thought I’d knocked it with my camera, but as we watched, it twitched up again, and line fell from the spool; fish on! Sweating in my waders, I waddled into the water and grabbed a number of pictures as Dru brought the fish to the net and safely landed it; success! Catch shot complete, I thanked Dru and left to start work on the write up and picture editing to be sent before my deadline. I’ve found it to be a lot more relaxing on the other side of the camera, all I had to do was storyboard, photograph, and write it all up; another easy one, if slightly more difficult to achieve! Once home, all images have to be checked, catalogued and saved, and the copy has to be written, re-written and edited, which for both, took longer than the actual fishing session! Once submitted, it’s checked again by the Features Editor, any issues are discussed, reviewed, and amended, before it’s programmed for publication. Ash and Dru were the ones under pressure to catch for the cameras, and both of my experts had confessed to a night of worry as they considered their first exposure in the national angling press, but, to their credit, both performed superbly and made my job much easier than I’d anticipated…perhaps the dreaded expert blank is just around the corner? I hope not, but I’m already preparing a Plan B… just in case!

SORRY MILLERS EMPTY HANDED FOLLOWING LATE TROTTERS WINNER SUB Kaiyne Woolery’s last gasp strike for Bolton Wanderers saw Rotherham United return over the Pennines empty-handed. New signing Shinnie was handed his full Millers debut following his cameo appearance against the Addicks. The hosts were quick out of the blocks and they stunned the visitors faithful when they scored with their first foray of note in just the second minute. After Richie Smallwood conceded the corner, Liam Feeney floated a centre which was not dealt with decisively by the Rotherham rearguard and Spearing took advantage to fire a rising shot from the edge of the box which flew into the roof of the visitors goal. The Millers responded positively to the setback and Kirk Broadfoot’s floated ball was inches away from putting Burke in the clear before Danny Ward had the visitors first shot in anger when he stung the palms of Ben Amos with a daisycutter from distance. Moments later, Dean Moxey’s error presented Shinnie with the opportunity of advancing with menace towards the Bolton box and with Burke’s run taking away a retreating defender,

the Trotters defence split open, but the Scottish international could only toe-poke an effort narrowly wide of the target. The Millers were penning the hosts deep into their own half and Joe Newell latched onto Burke’s cross to drill an effort which was blocked en-route to goal by Dorian Dervite. Just before the half-hour, Bolton turned defence into attack with the blink of an eye and Feeney’s swinging cross was met by the head of Davies, whose glancing header flashed past the upright before the Millers had their hearts in their mouths moments later when the hosts had a goal chalked off for offside. Feeney was again the provider to slide the ball into the feet of Emile Heskey, who cleverly worked a yard on his marker, to drill an effort which was smartly saved by Camp, but the ball rolled tantalisingly into the path of Wellington Silva, who tapped home into the unguarded net- but his joy soon turned to despair when the flag was raised. The Millers missed an opportunity to level matters when Newell skilfully exchanged passes with Shinnie to burst into the box but despite just having Amos to

ROVERS BOSS CALLS FOR BACKING Darren Ferguson has called on the Doncaster public to back his side to victory in an eagerly anticipated South Yorkshire derby against Sheffield United. Rovers host the Blades on Saturday and Ferguson – recently speaking at the Meet The Owners event – said he hopes for a five figure crowd and that the change in support has been tangible. “It’s been really noticeable, the atmosphere, both home and away,” he said. “The obvious one would be the Stoke game; the atmosphere was incredible for that game – absolutely fantastic. To get crowds like that, we’ve got the Sheffield United game coming up and we’d like to get 10,000 for that game.” Rovers have scored an astonishing ten goals in the final 15 minutes of games and Ferguson wants a repeat

performance when United make the short trip up the M18. “The one that sticks out for me was the Gillingham game when we were 2-0 down, you were unbelievable and all the players spoke about it after the game,” he said. “When we got to 2-1 I don’t think there was any one person in that ground that didn’t think we couldn’t get a result. That was important as your belief carried us over the line. That’s what we really need off you, it’s really important. It’s never about players, chairman or directors, but us all. That was really noticeable that that game you were absolutely fantastic so if we get that and try and entertain and get results on the pitch it will be a strong combination and that’s what we’re going for.”

CLUB TICKET UPDATE FOR BLADES DERBY Due to a high demand for tickets, the Club are urging supporters to buy in advance by either calling 01302 762576 or online. Fans have responded to First team manager Darren Ferguson’s call for in excess of 10,000 spectators to attend the final South Yorkshire derby at Keepmoat Stadium this season with less than 1,000 tickets remaining in the Polypipe South

Stand. There will be

beat, the home keeper stood up tall to block his goalbound effort. However, Redfearn’s men did not have wait long to level matters when a fine flowing move saw Danny Ward get on the wrong side of the Trotters defence to plant a cross, which may have been aimed at Shinnie, but the ball fell kindly for the onrushing Burke, who cleverly scooped the ball over Amos and into the home goal. The visitors had the first sight of goal following the interval when Danny Ward shrugged off the attentions of his marker on the edge of the box but he skied his effort over the bar before Dervite emerged from the ruck of the bodies to meet Feeney’s corner at the other end but his header failed to trouble Camp. Just before the hour mark, the Millers missed a gilt-edged chance to take the lead when Richardson floated a cross which saw Newell knock the ball down into the path of Shinnie, who was in acres of space, but he failed to make a clean connection with the goal at his mercy as Amos parried the ball to safety. Minutes later, Joe Mattock became the first to see yellow for a

cynical lunge on Wellington on the edge of the box before the Brazilian almost exacted revenge with a snap shot from distance which was deflected over the Rotherham bar. In the home side’s next attack, sub Liam Trotter headed over from Feeney’s outswinging corner before the Millers had Wood to thank for blocking Vela’s low cross-cumshot.With the game in the balance, Newell’s threaded ball gave sub Jonson Clarke-Harris a glimpse of goal but Dervite put his body on the line to block his powerful goalbound effort before the home defender stuck out a timely leg to snuff out Shinnie in the Millers next attack. The visitors were looking the most likely winners and Shinnie’s delicate cross saw Clarke-Harris nod the ball into the path of Wood, who attempted a bicycle kick, but his effort lacked power as Amos smothered the danger. With time running out, Rotherham had faint appeals for a spot kick when firstly Shinnie’s strike was seemingly blocked by the arm of Dean Moxey before Broadfoot took a tumble in the box from the resultant corner but referee Stuart Attwell waved away

their appeals. Newell saw yellow for a clumsy tackle before Bolton snatched the points when a clever throughball saw Davies one-on-one with Camp and although the Millers ‘keeper kept out his effort, the ball rolled tantalisingly into the path of Woolery, who kept his nerve to slide the ball into the empty net.

REDFEARN DEPARTS

Following a Board meeting on Monday morning, Rotherham United have parted company with first team manager Neil Redfearn with immediate effect. Chairman Tony Stewart commented: “It is with a heavy heart that we’ve parted company with Neil today. As we all know football is a results driven business and with 16 games to go our aim has to be to retain our Championship status. Everyone at the Club wishes Neil well with his future career and thank him for his efforts and endeavour. Our focus now is 100% behind appointing a first team manager as soon as possible.” The Club will be making no further comment until an appointment is made.

MEET THE OWNERS - A GREAT NIGHT! Doncaster Rovers expressed their thanks to the fans who turned up to their “Meet The Owners” event. It is the eighth time that the club have run the event and the interaction of the 200+ attendees provided much food for thought and scope for maintaining and improving standards. On the top table were First Team Manager Darren Ferguson, President Dick Watson, Chairman David Blunt, Directors Terry Bramall and Andrew Watson and CEO Gavin Baldwin. Gavin said: “We would like to thank all those supporters who attended the evening and took their time to ask us questions. That will ultimately challenge us to make Doncaster Rovers, and Club Doncaster better. There were some really good ideas once again from our supporters so we thank you all and look forward to working with you to implement positive change.” Doncaster Rovers announced 2016/17 Season Ticket prices while Club Doncaster were proud to welcome our new technical partners FBT Europe and their representatives including Sir Rodney Walker. Marketing and Communications Manager Ryan Murrant said: “From the feedback that we have had so far this seems to be one of the most successful Meet the Owners to date. We have had some really constructive feedback from our supporters over the new kit deal and items on show and we are still looking for more so please get

in touch via supporterservices@ clubdoncaster.co.uk “ Best of MTO:

Q: “For Darren Ferguson, why Doncaster Rovers?” Darren Ferguson: “The potential for this football club is great. It’s superbly run. When I spoke to the owners, I just knew. It was an easy decision.” Q: “Can you share with us what areas of the team you wanted to strengthen?” Darren Ferguson: “My first signing was Conor Grant, in my opinion we are very lucky to have him. He’s a fantastic player. I wanted to strengthen our strikers but Liam Mandeville has come in and done brilliantly and he’s really given me something to think about. We have to create a culture at the football club where people want to play for Doncaster Rovers. I’m on board and so are the players.” Q: “How has the club progressed with the unreserved South Stand seating?” David Blunt: “Where I’m sat it’s been amazing. Even when things haven’t gone our way you’ve still been amazing.” Darren Ferguson: “It’s been simply incredible. The Stoke game was fantastic; we want 10,000 here for the Sheffield United game. The Gillingham game stands out for me.

You had the belief that we could get a result, and you carried us over the line, thank you.”

Q: “Would it be commercially possible to buy your way out of this league?” Terry Bramall: “Behind every successful football team there is a very successful club team. We have that here. Since we took more control of the club, we have preached a much more sustainable club. There is a better way than buying your way out. The club will take its way out of this league with the work that we do.”

BLADES NEWS2015/16 SINKING FEELING FOR BLADES 100 UP Two goals in three minutes destroyed United’s chances of a home win in Saturday’s encounter with Wigan Athletic. A Will Grigg penalty and a second from Conor McAleny soon after saw United suffer just a third league defeat in three months. Fans’ favourite Basham returned to the starting line-up, replacing Campbell-Ryce, who dropped to the bench, where he was joined by the fit-again Done. Fouls by Hammond and Morgan presented the opposition with free-kicks in dangerous positions in the opening ten minutes before United attempted to get on top. Quick feet from Brayford and Coutts presented a half chance for Sharp, he fired wide with his left-foot and then the leading scoring linked up with Baxter, operating from the left, and the latter’s audacious chip worried Jaaskelainen but

dropped just wide. For the remainder of the half, both goalkeepers were largely redundant as the outfielders battled to get on top. Late in the half, Wildschut turned over a cross from Daniels and Power failed to find the target from the edge of the box. Adams replaced Sammon at the start of the second period and there was an early home chance for Sharp but, after turning his marker, he shot at Jaaskelainen. Soon after, Long pushed over a shot from Wildschut. Wigan, though, gained the ascendency with two goals in the space of less than three minutes. From Wildschut’s burst, Basham was adjudged to have fouled with referee Martin pointing to the penalty spot, although the initial contact appeared to be just outside the box - GRIGG hammered home from 12 yards. There was a chance to

level but Adams shot at Jaaskelainen after Wigan could only half clear a cross from Coutts before the lead was doubled. Wildschut and Power helped move the ball from left to right for McALENY to blast home at the near post. The next chance was an impressive Blades move at pace involving Sharp and Adams, resulting in McEveley overlapping on the left and shooting just wide, whilst United’s afternoon got worse when Wigan were handed a second penalty, this time Coutts

adjudged to have fouled McCann. Grigg, though, saw his second spot-kick saved by Long, diving to his left. Done and Campbell-Ryce were introduced in an attempt to get back in the game. All the pressure was now coming from United but Wigan had switched to a back five and were content to protect their penalty area. Adams fired wide from the edge of the box and it was all that the home side could muster apart from an injury-time melee which saw McCann block from Sharp.

FOR GEORGE George Long made his 100th appearance in a Sheffield United shirt during Saturday’s defeat by Wigan. Rising from the junior ranks, Long first came to prominence when, alongside other Academy graduates Harry Maguire, Terry Kennedy, Callum McFadzean and others, the Blades U18 team reached the final of the FA Youth Cup, losing out only to Manchester Utd over two legs. Although Danny Wilson was happy to put his trust in George, Nigel Clough, chose to go with experience in goal, using Howard and Iain Turner during last season. Long was loaned to League Two’s Oxford United, and then had a more successful loan spell at Scottish Premiership side Motherwell. Clough was axed by

the club, to be replaced with Nigel Adkins, who picked George for Sheffield United’s first league game of the season against Gillingham, but after conceding 4 goals he was replaced by Howard in subsequent games. Having regained the number 1 shirt, his performances have been more confident and assured, showing a form and maturity ahead of his years. Long appeared twice in the Sky Bet Football League Team of the Week during December. Long, who has experience in the England Under 21 set up, was disappointed to mark the special occasion on Saturday with a loss. Despite saving a penalty, Long was unable to stop the Blades slumping to a 2-nil defeat against Wigan. Speaking after the game, Long said: ‘It’s something I’m very proud of to get 100 appearances. It’s not the result we were after; all we can do is keep working harder.’

OWLS NEWS2015/16 SUPER HOOPER DOUBLES UP

Sheffield Wednesday came from a goal down to complete a magnificent 2-1 victory against Birmingham at St Andrew’s. Blues forward Clayton Donaldson netted deep into first half stoppage time, tucking home from six yards after the ball ricocheted into his path. On 77 minutes Gary Hooper levelled with a superb strike that beat Tomasz Kuszczak all ends up via the crossbar. And just three minutes later Hooper got his second of the afternoon after Fernando Forestieri put the ball on the plate for the frontman to turn home from close range. Carlos Carvalhal made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Burnley at Hillsborough on Tuesday. After making a late cameo appearance against the Clarets, Irish winger Aiden McGeady was handed his first start and having come

through a Development Squad game against Nottingham Forest unscathed, Tom Lees made his return to the Wednesday back-line. Kieran Lee picked up an injury in the warm-up, with Sam Hutchinson moving forward into midfield and Vincent Sasso starting at the heart of the defence. A bright start by the visitors was marred when both Keiren Westwood and Sam Hutchinson were forced off with injury Lewis Price and Lewis McGugan entered the fray. The Owls’ first major chance came through January Player of the Month Hooper who rolled the ball past veteran defender Paul Robinson before lashing goalwards. Hooper was quick to pounce on the rebound after keeper Kuszczak fumbled but Michael Morrison was back in time to put the ball into

touch. At the other end Blues Donaldson beat the offside trap before going one on one with Price, but the substitute keeper made a superb reaction save down low to his left. With a few minutes to go before the interval Hooper collected a reverse pass from Barry Bannan and just missed the target after being closed down. But right on the stroke of half time, Birmingham took the lead through Donaldson. The forward was fortunate when the ball cannoned back off team mate Morrison and into his path to calmly stroke home from six yards. Wednesday burst out of the traps after the break and it was Forestieri who fired the first warning shot with a low drive skipping off the turf and into Kuszczak. The Blues then had a chance to extend their lead when Donaldson saw his shot parried by Price before Will Buckley flicked the rebound over the bar. Atdhe Nuhiu was the Owls’ third and final substitution, and he did well to shield the ball before teeing up Ross Wallace whose looping strike was finger-tipped over the bar. With 77 minutes on the clock, Wednesday found themselves level after a sumptuous strike from Hooper. The striker picked up possession on the edge of the area and

unleashed a bullet of a shot which slammed against the underside of the crossbar and into the net. With the away end in full voice, the visitors completed their comeback as Hooper once again got his name on the scoresheet on the 80th minute. Forestieri found the unmarked hitman at the back post and the 28-year-old applied the calmest of finishes to grab his ninth goal in ten games. It could have even been three for the Owls as Forestieri recovered from a slip before turning his man and his powerful low drive was tipped past the post by Kuszczak. Wednesday saw the game out to maintain their unbeaten run in the Championship for 2016 to rise to sixth place in the table.

HOOPER LANDS PFA AWARD Gary Hooper has collected another award on the back of his wonderful recent return in front of goal. Having been crowned as the swfc.co.uk January Player of the Month, the in-form striker has now been voted the Sky Bet Championship PFA Fans’ Player of the Month. Previously, Ross Wallace, Fernando Forestieri and Lucas Joao have won the PFA award. Hooper now becomes the fourth Owl to land the prize in 2015/16 after netting five goals in January. With nine goals from his last ten games, Hooper is in red hot form. His double at St Andrew’s at the weekend propelled Wednesday back into the top six, two points clear of Ipswich in seventh spot.

CARLOS THANKS FANS The Owls went into Saturday’s big clash with Birmingham knowing they would be backed by a capacity away following. Over 3,000 tickets for the Blues v Owls fixture were quickly snapped up and Carlos Carvalhal has paid tribute to the fans. Firmly believing that each and every supporter has a part to play this season, Carlos said: “They are amazing. When we feel that our fans are following us - and we are feeling this all the time. The connection between us and the fans is very, very high. When my players and I feel the presence of the fans and their enthusiasm, this makes us stronger to go and win the games. We’ll always do our best to try and bring the three points to them.” Meanwhile coach Lee Bullen praised the spirit after the Owls came from behind to beat Birmingham 2-1 at St Andrew’s.

THE SHAKEY

The visitors suffered a double injury blow early on. However, a quickfire brace from Gary Hooper secured all three points for Wednesday. Bullen said: “We did fantastic today in tough conditions. We had to make some changes due to injuries before and during the game, but we played well against a good team to get the result. The players who came into the game today made a good impression, and it shows the depth and quality we have in this squad.” Wednesday move back into the top six after beating the Blues, and Bullen is confident the Owls can achieve even more. He added: “One of the things we always tell the players is to look up the table and not down it. We have the quality in the squad to push even higher up the league, but we always take one game at a time. Today’s result was important because we played a good team who will also be up and around there at the end of the season. We now want to focus on preparing for Brentford at Hillsborough on Saturday, as that will also be a tough game.”
