I was telling my friend “I just left my job, I couldn’t work for that man after what he said to me.” He asked “What did he say?” “You’re fired.” I replied. What did the pirate say when he turned 80? Aye Matey. A Spanish magician tells the audience he will disappear on the count of 3. He says, “Uno, Dos...” *Poof* He disappeared without a Tres. Where did Noah keep his bees? In the Ark Hives. What do you call a snobbish criminal going down the stairs? A condescending con descending. What’s the difference between a dirty bus stop and a lobster with breast implants? One’s a crusty bus station and one’s a busty crustacean. The first rule of Thesaurus Club is you don’t talk about, mention, speak of, discuss or chat about Thesaurus Club. Before I got through to Seaworld, I had to say “Jump through the hoop! Do a flip!” They said my call may be recorded for training porpoises.

Bill walks into a post office last week to see a middle-aged man standing at the counter enthusiastically writing addresses on bright pink envelopes covered with hearts. He then takes out a scent bottle and starts spraying perfume over them. Bill’s curiosity gets the better of him and he walks over to the man and asks him what he’s doing. “I’m sending out 1,000 Valentine’s Day cards signed, ‘Guess who?’” says the man. “Why on earth are you doing that?” asks Bill. “Because I’m a divorce lawyer.” replies the man.

JOIN THE DEBATE IN NORTH EAST SHEFFIELD Sheffield’s Council leaders will be holding their next Cabinet meeting in the north east of the city next week. The City Council has held a series of ‘Question Time’ style sessions over the winter months to discuss issues that matter to people in their local areas. There are two meetings left in the series and the one in the north east will be held at Shirecliffe Community Centre, 349 Shirecliffe Road on Wednesday 24 February at 6.30pm (refreshments from 5.30pm). The ‘Cabinet in the Community’ meetings are intended to give more people the opportunity to ask questions and get involved in the debate about
Council issues across the city. The focus of these meetings is to ask local people for their views on how they engage with the council. The events include the usual opportunity to put any questions of concern to the relevant Cabinet Member. Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council said: “Over the last few years we have found the Cabinet in the Community events to be a positive way of connecting with people across the city. We’ve had some really lively debates and discussions on issues that matter to people in those areas. “I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to take part in some really important debates in each
part of the city. I hope as many people as possible will use the sessions as a way of engaging in democracy at a local level.” The items for discussion will be drawn up by local people and put to the Cabinet in the hour and a half session. Residents will be able to submit written questions at least five days in advance of the meeting by emailing CabinetintheCommunity@sheffield.gov.uk. Where possible, questions will be grouped together so that a more focussed discussion can take place. Events have been set up on Facebook for the Cabinet in the Community sessions, which residents can join to keep up with all the latest information. To find these events, visit the Our Sheffield or Sheffield Events Facebook pages.

LOVE THE OUTDOORS? LOVE BIG CITY LIFE? PLAY IN SHEFFIELD THIS MARCH – WEEKENDER 11-13 MARCH 2016 Lovers of the outdoors are in for a treat as registration picks up for the headline events in The Outdoor City Weekender 11-13 March. Through its status as The Outdoor City, Sheffield is growing its reputation as the UK’s leading destination for people seeking outdoor adventure, city culture and rural escapes and we’re in the mood to celebrate the people and places that make it so. The Outdoor City Weekender will take place 11-13 March 2016. Whether you walk, run, climb, ride, love family time in the great outdoors or are a self-confessed spectator rather than participator of outdoor activities; there is something for everyone in Sheffield’s Weekender line-up. Headline events include the Magnificent Seven; the first of its kind in the UK, this cycle event (part sportive, and part hill climb race) will see cyclists do battle with Sheffield’s notorious seven hills! The Climbing Works International Film Festival, sponsored by Rab is celebrating its tenth year and promises non-stop fun and action for participators and spectators alike visiting Sheffield that weekend. And as if that wasn’t enough, Sheffield’s annual adventure film festival ShAFF will be bringing the wild outdoors into the city for three days of jaw dropping spectacle and heart stopping adventure. Cllr Leigh Bramall, Deputy Leader & Cabinet Member for Business, Skills, Development and Tourism said: “On any given weekend in Sheffield people explore and connect with each other in the outdoors and this is one of the big reasons people are attracted to the city and stay in the city. The Weekender is about pulling our outdoor events together and celebrating the people, places and activities that make us The Outdoor City. “By promoting these events as one ‘festival of the outdoors’ we can showcase the very best of Sheffield to visitors. “As well as having a weekend offer for visitors our ambition is that people who live in Sheffield and might ride bikes around Grenoside Woods for example, will get to know about and try out bouldering for the first time. Or that people who like watching films in the Showroom, might think about taking a guided walk in the Peaks. “For people who haven’t been to Sheffield for a while, or who have never been, we hope that this line-up encourages them to plan a trip here in March to get the full outdoor city experience.”
Visit Sheffield between 11 and 13 March for adventure films, international climbing championships, ranger led Peak District walking tours, arguably England’s best mountain bike trails, the first ever UK seven-hill cycPeak District ling challenge of its kind and much more.

WE DANCED SMOKEFREE SPACES
We Danced, funded by Provident Financial – Good Neighbour Fund, is an intergenerational pilot project bringing together older adults in care home settings with local primary schools in Parsons Cross, Sheffield. We Danced invites older adults to share their stories of dance and dancing with a team of five professional dance artists. The project commenced in late January 2016, with artists working under the mentorship of TC Howard to explore themes and gather ideas for delivery. Weekly sessions began in Blenheim Court Care Home with artists delivering work in both a group setting and on a one to one basis with older adults. We Danced includes participatory dance, conversation and reminiscence and also invites family and friends of the residents to participate. In February, the creative team will commence work with young people at Mansel Primary School; developing relationships between children and care home residents and using the reminiscence work as a creative starting point to explore the dances “we danced”. The first phase of the project will take place over the next twelve months, creating moments of sharing and exchange through participatory workshops and celebratory sharings. The connections We Danced will create with older adults, will contribute to reducing social isolation and loneliness and promote positive community cohesion through relationship building with young people. Young people will build a stronger relationship with elders, which will impact positively on attitudes to ageing.

DJ OR DANCE BAND? OUR GUIDE TO WEDDING ENTERTAINMENT Welcome to our February Wedding Guide! One aspect of the planning that may get overlooked is entertainment for you reception - and yet making the correct choice is fundamental in making a special day unforgettable! Should You Hire a Band or DJ for Your Reception? Take a look at the benefits of each entertainment choice. If you want your guests to dance all night, that’s what really brings the party to a wedding. You’ll have to decide whether a live band or a DJ is best for your reception style. Choosing between a band and a DJ is always tough because there is no real right answer – it all depends on your taste and priorities. It’s important to compare the differences between booking a band versus booking a DJ in order to see which act best aligns with your own celebration. Hiring a band adds elegance to create an exciting atmosphere during the reception. It makes a statement about the formality and opulence of your wedding. As long as you pick the right band, the live performance can add energy to the proceedings. If you have a plethora of friends and family who can’t or won’t dance, they can still enjoy watching the band perform. If choosing a specific genre of music, the band can also contribute to the overall theme of your wedding. With a DJ, a wide variety of music can be played for a more diverse crowd. Couples who are very particular about their music can have customised playlists to fit their tastes. A DJ can also take requests more easily, since he or she will have nearly every song at his or her disposal. If you’re wary about a DJ being nothing more than a glorified i-tunes playlist, remember that a skilled disc jockey can create on-the-fly mashups to make sure every song has a proper dance beat, as well as excite the crowd. Another advantage is that a DJ can fit in smaller spaces and doesn’t require a stage, which is helpful for unique venues. There are many elements to consider when selecting the entertainment that will make your wedding day an unforgettable success. Here are some guidelines to help you make the best choice. What to Keep in Mind When Choosing Your Band How long has the band been together? Your band should be self-contained, and their history should suggest that they won’t split up the week before your big day! Do they have experience of weddings? Wedding receptions are very detail specific and not all bands know the nuances that are vital to the success of the evening. They should be familiar with different types of weddings and the etiquette that is necessary for each. Make sure your band leader is genuinely concerned enough to

alert your photographer and videographer of key segments of your reception, such as the first dance and father-daughter dance, special toasts, and key announcements. In addition, band members must be flexible, have warm personalities, and a passion to make your event superbly memorable. Lastly, your band should also know when it is appropriate to take their breaks if your music is not continuous. Do they play together on a consistent basis? Bands that constantly change members will not have a smooth flow as they are always asking for the keys and tempos of the songs they perform. This results in too many silent pauses between songs and as we say in the business, “silence is deafening!” So, a seamless transition from song to song is imperative. They should also play a wide variety of music that will be pleasing to all age groups. Finally, it is key for the band to know the importance of volume control, when to take it up a notch, and when to bring it down. Brides and Grooms usually share one common desire: they all want to party. The most obvious way to achieve that is by packing the dance floor. How does a band or DJ accomplish such a feat? This job is not just the responsibility of the entertainment alone. There are many factors to take into consideration: • The most important rule is that the bride and groom need to stay on the dance floor. The guests are there to be with you. Where you go, they will follow. • Liquid courage is a close second on the list.
Make sure the bar is open and stays open. When the music and booze stop, the party is over. Putting the alcohol and sweets in another room is way too enticing and will take your guests away from the fun. • Song selection can make or break your evening. Never exclude a generation of dancers for more than two or three songs. Even though it’s your party and you and your friends may love techno or deep house, there is a time and place for everyone to get a little of their favourites. There are many genres of music to enjoy, but the night is a lot shorter than you think. The rule of thumb here is choosing danceable and recognisable songs. Most couples initially don’t want any ballads (slow songs). But feel free to play a few. People do need an ear break and there is an entire group of non-dancers that are waiting to be romantic. • The last tip of the day is to use your special dances (First Dance, Father/Daughter, and Mother/Son) as a tool to pack the dance floor. This can be achieved by inviting all guests to the dance floor halfway through the song to join and help you celebrate. There is an unwritten obligation to this concept, making it very difficult for your guests to refuse the invitation. Make sure that you have a meeting with your entertainment at least one month before your event to go over your song selections and timing. Congratulations…and have fun!

FIND LOVE AT THE PUB REVEREND & THE MAKERS SET TO HEADLINE THE BIGGEST EVER MOSBOROUGH MUSIC FESTIVAL The popular Mosborough music festival enters its 6th year in 2016 with the festival taking place on June 3rd and 4th with an extended capacity. The festival has also introduced on-site camping for the first time. The 2015 festival sold out with weeks to go and early ticket sales indicate that 2016 will sell out quickly. This charity based festival has gone from
strength to strength with Whitehornes estate agents and C&G assessments have once again sponsored the festival. A top drawer line-up performing on three stages includes, Reverend & the Makers, Space, The Southmartins, Complete Madness, Jungle Lion, Redfaces, Bang Bang Romeo, Marquis Drive, Dirty Sterling, The SSS, Stop Drop Robot, The Shanklins, Phat Bollard, Tom Hingley, Bongo & the Soul Jar, Maybelleen, The Jackobins, Reasons to be Cheerful and Malarkey Affair. “We will be quite sad in a way that this year’s festival is probably the last on the Mosborough site due to development of the land. There’s been so many great memories, it won’t be the end of Mosborough as a festival though as despite the development we will continue in the hope that our crowd understand the fact that we have to move and follow us to a new site. Last year sold out and we could have sold another thousand tickets such was the demand. It’s a win - win situation for our festival goers as we are cheap, high
quality, family orientated and also look after charities along the way. We raised just under £5000 for charities last year and are hoping to do at least the same for this year’s charity which is ‘Help for Heroes’ plus another in which we are yet to decide, Organiser Steve Cowens said. The festival has added onsite camping and a Friday evening show to the festival. Under 10’s are free, with under 11 to 15 year olds £5. Steve added, “We try not to be any old festival, our catch phrase is ‘we are the people’s festival with a heart’. We try to be different and really look after our crowd, we even had a marriage proposal on stage last year, thankfully she said ‘yes’. This year we’ve got another outstanding line up
which includes our own Reverend & the Makers, top Liverpool band Space, Tom Hingley (ex Inspiral Carpets), Cornish buskers Phat Bollard, Complete Madness, The Southmartins plus the best of Sheffield’s own thriving music scene. I think we are the best value festival in the country and so do a lot of other people. Let’s hope for another sell out and a successful move in 2017. I really hope to keep the festival alive as its great for Sheffield, it’s great for the people and it’s great for charities, it’s just not that great for my health”! For information and tickets visit www. mosboroughmusicfestival.co.uk
COMPETITION We have teamed up with Mosborough Music Festival to offer five lucky readers the chance to win a pair of festival tickets. For your chance to win simply answer the following question and send your entry with a contact telephone number to info@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk before 5pm on Monday 18th March. Which city are Space (Pictured left) originally from?
The pub still plays a valued part in people’s love lives, according to new research from the Campaign for Real Ale. Around a fifth (18%) of UK adults in a relationship met their partner in the pub, beating work, online, nightclubs and holidays for finding love, while 29% of all UK adults would be most likely to go to a pub for a first date, according to a survey carried out by YouGov on behalf of CAMRA this month. The findings reinforce research released earlier this year by CAMRA, which showed pubs add to happiness and wellbeing. The Friends on Tap report, produced by Professor Robin Dunbar at Oxford University, showed having a strong social network significantly improves happiness and wellbeing. Your chances in love could also be improved by visiting your local pub. According to the Oxford University report findings, as social skills improve initially after a drink and people are more likely to talk to strangers, were more engaged in conversation and in some cases rated people as more attractive. The Friends on Tap report also shows that meeting someone in person in an environment such as a pub provides “direct cues of their honesty, trustworthiness and suitability as a friend or partner” making it less likely to fall victim to the “social or romantic predators” found online.

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL 2016 ANNOUNCES CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN AS SECOND MAIN STAGE HEADLINER Sheffield’s inner-city music festival, which will take place from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 July across four huge outdoor spaces and 15 diverse venues across the city, is thrilled to announce that Catfish and the Bottlemen will headline the Main Stage on Sunday night. Also newly announced are Sheffield home-grown talents The Crookes and Blessa. For the eighth edition of Tramlines Festival, Catfish and the Bottlemen will join an already impressive bill which includes Dizzee Rascal, Young Fathers, Dawn Penn, Goldie MBE, Toddla T, Norman Jay MBE, Amy Becker, Mumdance, Field Music, Hinds, Gwenno, C Duncan, Randall, Meilyr Jones and many more, further cementing Tramlines’ status as one of the most diverse festivals around. Tramlines is pleased to welcome the return of Catfish and the Bottlemen after the indie-rockers played at one of the festival’s smallest venues some years back before their incredible rise to success. The four-piece are now seriously in demand, recently selling out a 8,000 capacity show at the Manchester Castlefield Bowl in just six minutes and bagging a UK Top 10 for their album ‘The Balcony’. Indie-pop band The Crookes are also newly announced, and will play the Saturday at Tramlines on the expanded Devonshire Green stage, the former site to the festival’s main stage. With a string of hit singles under their belts, widespread support from 6 Music, an American tour and a fourth album recently released, ‘Lucky Ones’, The Crookes are one of Sheffield’s hottest exports right now. Also flying the Sheffield flag are Blessa who will play on the Sunday at Queens Social Club. A year on from their debut EP ‘Love is an Evol Word’, which garnered attention from the likes of the NME and the Guardian, Blessa have undergone a regeneration. Swapping fuzzy guitars for melancholic disco, they are preparing to free their reimagined set out of their Kelham Island practice space onto the Tramlines Festival circuit.
TOY HEAD UP A HOST OF NEW ADDITIONS TO COMPLETE THE OUTLINES FESTIVAL BILL The new names join Roots Manuva, Gang of Four, Shura, Loyle Carner, NZCA Lines, Spring King, Rosie Lowe, at new Sheffield multi-venue festival With its inaugural event just a few weeks away, Outlines Festival has released the final list of names for its 2016 bill. Psychedelic rock band TOY lead the new additions to the genre-spanning event, which is set to take place across several city centre venues in Sheffield on Saturday 27th February 2016. TOY will play at the festival’s roller disco venue, where they will appear alongside post-punk heroes Gang of Four, indie-rock upstarts The Big Moon and brooding garage-pop quartet PINS, amongst others. The final names join a showcase of established names and emerging talent, including UK hip-hop pioneer Roots Manuva, Gang of Four, Shura, Loyle Carner, NZCA Lines, Georgia, The Big Moon, Pumarosa, Spring King, Rosie Lowe and PINS, amongst others. The new festival comes from the makers of the critically acclaimed Tramlines, which attracts over 150,000 visitors to Sheffield each year and has hosted shows from artists including alt-j, the xx, AlunaGeorge, Public Enemy, Lianne La Havas, Neneh Cherry, Basement Jaxx, Buzzcocks, Gold Panda, The Gaslamp Killer, Evian Christ, The Selecter and many more. Like Tramlines, Outlines will be a city-centre event, taking place across a range of indoor venues in Sheffield. Performance spaces will range from established venues like Plug, Queens Social Club
In 2015, 100,000 festival-goers attended Tramlines to witness performances from the likes of Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans, Buzzcocks, Sugarhill Gang, Martha Reeves, Slaves, Billy Bragg, Ghostpoet and hundreds more. The festival sprawls across the entire city centre, taking in spaces such as the new 15,000 capacity Main Stage, the woodland location of the Folk Forest, intimate spaces like Sheffield Cathedral, legendary institutions such as the Leadmill and Sheffield’s coolest clubs and warehouse spaces, including Hope Works and The Night Kitchen. Tickets for Tramlines Festival 2016 are now on sale and, as ever, they remain seriously good value. A full weekend ticket (covering all stages from day until night) comes in at the bargain price of just £42 +bf. Festival-goers now have the option to buy day or night tickets, making it easier to catch their favourite bands. Daytime tickets start from £23 +bf, and grant access to all indoor and outdoor stages where bands, new music and headliners abound. Or, for fans of dance music of all kinds, from techno to D&B and everything in between, a night-time ticket is available for £20 + bf, permitting entry to clubs on Friday and Saturday night, or from £5+ bf if Sunday is the night to stay out! For up-to-the-minute information about Tramlines 2016, visit www.tramlines.org.uk or follow Tramlines on Twitter @tramlines

Elsewhere, organisers have also announced the addition of a brand-new venue, DINA, which will host a day-to-night showcase from cutting-edge experimental labels Fuck Punk and Young Echo. Innovative trio Blood Sport will perform as part of the event, celebrating the launch of their forthcoming new EP with a set of their own locked rhythms and kraut-rock grooves. A final injection of home-grown talent will see melancholic disco outfit Blessa and irrepressible funk/ afrobeat 9-piece KOG & The Zongo Brigade join the bill at o2 Academy, where they will join the likes of Georgia and Pumarosa. Outlines' Head of Programming Kate Hewett says: We’re thrilled to have added the incredible TOY to the lineup. The roller disco at Skate Central - where TOY will appear alongside Gang of Four - is set to be a real highlight of the festival and it’s great to be able to give music-lovers the chance to catch some bands in a space that’s a bit out of the ordinary. Outside of the music, festival-goers will also have the chance to check out a range of music shorts programmed in collaboration with Sensoria Festival of film and music - and food and drink from some of Sheffield’s independent retailers. Advance weekend tickets are now available for Outlines, priced at £25 plus booking fee, available from www.outlinesfestival.com/

DRIVERS ‘COULD CHEAP FUEL LEADS TO MORE MILES FACE TOWNS AND CITIES CHARGE’ London-style congestion charges could be imposed elsewhere in the UK under plans that the EU is suggesting to meet emissions targets. The European Commission has issued a new set of guidelines for councils on how to reduce emissions by 20% by 2020. These include motorists being charged for driving through British towns and cities. It states that councils should send a “clear economic signal to polluters” to reduce vehicle emissions. The proposals are part of the EU’s Delivering on the Europe 2020 Strategy for local and regional authorities. The EU is also suggesting that householders could be charged for waste disposal in a bid to encourage more people to recycle. The guide tells local authorities that it is important “to ensure that local or regional taxes or charges are consistent with wider objectives”. The guide states: “Specific examples of local charging schemes that both generate local revenues and serve wider public policy objectives include congestion charging for private car use in urban centres; charging for commercial and domestic waste collection and disposal has the advantage of ensuring the sustainability of the service and sending out a clear economic signal to polluters.” Conservative MP Martin Vickers, who sits on the Transport Select Committee, says local authorities should have the final say on whether to introduce congestion charging.

A new study by Kwik Fit, the UK’s leading automotive servicing and repair company, has revealed that falling oil prices have led to British motorists travelling an additional 3,828,000,000 miles pa, compared with two years ago. More than four million drivers say that the 20% fall in the price of fuel since January 20142 has resulted in them driving an average of 79 more miles each month, or 950 miles per year. 280,000 motorists say the increase in their monthly mileage is more than 200 miles. The fall in prices at the pump has left the nation’s drivers much better off. Kwik Fit found that when compared with their fuel costs two years ago, drivers are saving a total of £6.1 billion a year. The average monthly saving is £16.05, though almost half a million drivers (497,000) are each saving more than £60 per month. As well as the financial advantage to motorists, the lower prices have also given people greater freedom and flexibility.
10% of drivers say that they have been able to make journeys they might otherwise have avoided, while 8% (2.8 million) motorists, have been able to go on days out or driving holidays they would not have done at higher prices. 5% say they can make longer journeys than was previously the case. Those buying a new car have had greater flexibility, with 6% saying they have bought a car with lower fuel economy as it is more affordable to run at lower fuel costs. However, there have been some downsides for road users in the lower fuel prices. 5% of drivers (2.3 million) say they are less concerned about driving in an economical manner, with 2% openly admitting that they drive faster. Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit said: “The lower fuel prices have obviously led to huge savings for many motorists, and also enabled them to use their car more often. It’s important that drivers making more or longer journeys adapt their maintenance and servicing accordingly, as items like tyres and brakes will wear out sooner as more miles are covered. And just because fuel prices are lower than two years ago, we would encourage all drivers to try to drive as efficiently as possible – driving faster will clearly negate any savings made by increasing fuel consumption.
SMART MOTORWAYS POSING HAND CAR WASH ‘SIGNIFICANT RISKS’ & LEATHER From Smart motorways that allow motorists to drive on the hard shoulder during peak times are causing serious problems for road users, the police are warning. According to senior traffic officers, all-lane running stops emergency services getting to the site of an accident, while also preventing police from pulling over drivers. The scheme, which has so far seen around 212 miles of motorways have hard shoulders converted, involves installing lay-bys for motorists to use in emergencies. But reports suggest that HGV drivers from overseas unaware of the changes have ended up taking their breaks in these lay-bys. The Metropolitan Police says the decision to drop the hard shoulder has resulted in “significant risks” for motorists. Around 480 miles of motorways are now set to lose their hard shoulder as part of the smart motorways scheme, while a transport select committee has also been launched to examine the move further. Highways England says that it will continue to work with emergency services as the scheme is rolled out to ensure safety levels are maintained.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve had the dreaded manflu this week, (maybe even Manthrax?) so I’ve been in solitary confinement for most of it; I’ve managed only a few hours fishing before the lurgy got the better of me and I had to retire…. Despite being close to death, I’ve had a good week, with plenty of new toys, an interesting visit and a fruitful meeting. An email from Sonik Sports HQ advised that a delivery of rods was imminent, and a couple of days later, four of the brand new S3 range were duly received. Designed with versatility in mind, the range offers something for all anglers who target a variety of different species. A selection of Avon style tips, interchangeable, push-in quivertips, and a number of available test curves, make this latest series of Sonik rods indispensable for the serious multi-species angler… I took the 1.5lb and 2.25lb test curve rods out and managed a short period of casting various leads and method feeders to distances between thirty and almost a hundred yards, and can briefly report that so far, as expected of a Sonik rod, each rod performed admirably. I’ve yet to put a hefty fish through either, but have a sneaking suspicion, that these rods are the very same blanks I trialled prior at the end of 2015….and I like them! I’ll have chance to do a comprehensive review soon, but until then check out the latest additions coming soon at www.soniksports.com I had an invite to visit the Dinsmores factory this week. I’m sure you are aware that brand leader Dinsmores produce most of the nontoxic split shot sold throughout the UK, amongst a plethora of other tackle items, but it’s always interesting to see how it’s all put together. A mix of precision engineering and hand tooled expertise, all of Dinsmores products are put manufactured and put together in the heart of the UK. I may not yet wear an anorak, but I’m intrigued by the process by which shot is made; watching the wire being fed into a machine which chatters away whilst being tended by watchful staff, before being
collected into hoppers below is fascinating; I don’t know why, it just is. Believe it or not, every single shot, from SSG to tiny no.10’s is then washed, and, if required, coated, before sorting and packaging by hand…just so your float cocks with consistency, or your bomb of feeder is stopped without damaging the line. It’s not just shot at Dinsmores though; I didn’t know that the company produce an amazing thirty six different landing net heads, a multitude of keepnets, brollies, and banksticks. There make a range of jig heads, dropshot weights, flat bombs, square pears, watch leads, bullets, coffins, and many, many more, and I can confidently predict that you will have at least a couple of branded pieces of Dinsmores in your kit! It was a productive visit, both to learn about the tackle I use, and also future developments and the way the corporate brand sits within the angling trade….my thanks to Nigel and Ian May for accommodating me. Finally, I’ve had chance to potter up the local canal for an hour, throwing a variety of Rapture UK lures around in the hope of tempting a few predators. As I’ve previously mentioned, manflu severely restricted any meaningful fishing, but after chucking a number of ‘Slurps’ and other brightly coloured tempters into likely looking holes, I’d managed a few perch and lost a couple of toothy jacks which were just too fast for me. I’ve also got hold of one of the chest rigs with a host of pouches and backpack space which should help me get a little bit more organised, keep tackle to a minimum, and enjoy the light lure style of fishing. If you haven’t yet tried an hour or two of exploring the local cut, river or lake, with a selection of rubber, then I can certainly recommend it; you may be very pleasantly surprised just where you can catch fish!

FERGUSON FUMING AT ROVERS DERBY DISPLAY DARREN REFLECTS HAPPY WARNOCK Doncaster Rovers have had to wait eleven days for a game due to last weekends’ derby against Scunthorpe United being postponed. Darren Ferguson was pleased to welcome back Nathan Tyson and Andy Butler to the side who had been missing for some weeks with injury. Cameron Stewart also started as a very attacking starting eleven was named. A win for Rovers would not only close the gap on the play-off chasing Blades to three points, but avenge a 3-1 defeat at Bramall Lane back in September during Rob Jones’ temporary time in charge of the club. As expected with a local derby it was a lively start to the game. Chris Neal was called into action very early on as the ball fell to Jose Baxter who volleyed at goal. On target, Neal somehow got his fingertips to it. Blades went close again as another ball was played into the box. This time Neill Collins headed at goal, only to see his effort rebound off the crossbar. Rovers settled and grew into the game. Aaron Taylor-Sinclair played a long ball towards Andy
Williams to put him through on goal, he turned to shoot but George Long saved. Williams went close again after wonderful work from Tyson set him up in the box but his final shot was well blocked. The striker then had his header cleared off the line moments later. On the stroke of half time the visitors took the lead. A superb ball over the top from Baxter found Che Adams in the box. Leaving Chris Neal no choice but to come off his line, Adams poked the ball home as Nigel Adkins side took the lead. Former Sheffield United player Craig Alcock was introduced into the action shortly after the break, the versatile defender was brought on for centre half Andy Butler. Alcock was on the attack straight away as he set winger Stewart on his way on the 50th minute, he easily evaded Collins who was backtracking towards his own goal. The Ipswich Town loanee chose the usual option of shooting from the right corner of the box which forced a superb save from Long. Rovers were beginning to string a few passes together and could have been level thanks to
the brilliance of youngster Harry Middleton. After receiving a direct pass from Stewart, the midfielder fizzed an inviting ball across the six-yard box for the lurking Tyson, unfortunately for the striker he could not get his big toe to the ball. With 20 minutes of the game remaining Chris Neal made a stunning one-on-one save to keep Doncaster in this South Yorkshire derby. Blades’ Louis Reed picked the ball up in the middle of the field and played a lovely one-two with goal scorer Adams who sold Luke McCullough for a dummy before sliding the ball back to Reed to get his shot off, out came Neal who made himself as big as possible to make the save with his left foot. Rovers gave everything they had to try and get level late in the second half which included a half chance for Andy Williams after some poor defending from Sheffield United, however the ball bobbled up and hit off his knee which sent it sailing wide of Long’s left post.
Manager Darren Ferguson watching from the stands in view of his touchline ban - pulled no punches in condemning his team’s performance in the South Yorkshire derby on Saturday. Speaking after the game, he acknowledgd that his team were almost certain to be starting the next campaign in League One. He said “We had a bad day at the office and now is the time for us all to learn who wants to be in that dressing room for us next season. Today was the first time I have ever publicly criticised my players and I don’t want to ever have to do that again. We have sixteen games left. It’s not impossible, but it’s unlikely that we will go up, and it is unlikely we will go down so we know what we are working towards. I demand that every player that pulls on the Rovers shirt will put in a shift for the team and for the supporters. Moving into next season I will have a Rovers team, my team, and our aim and what we are working towards are those playoff places. That is where this club should be and I want my players to get us there”.
WARNOCK STEADIES THE SHIP FOR NINE-MAN MILLERS ROTHERHAM United earned a valuable point in their fight for Championship survival as they claimed a share of the spoils with Birmingham City despite finishing the game with nine men. In an eventful opening to Neil Warnock’s reign at the Rotherham helm, the Millers showed great resolve to earn a goalless draw despite both Richard Wood and Joe Mattock being shown red for two bookable offences in the latter stages of the game. Warnock made two changes to the home starting line-up for the visit of Gary Rowett’s Blues. Experienced midfielder Paul Green returned to the Millers engine room as Andrew Shinnie was ineligible to face his parent club while last season’s top scorer Matt Derbyshire partnered Danny Ward upfront as Tottenham loanee Grant Ward had to settle for a substitutes berth. Warnock was given a rapturous welcome by the AESSEAL New York Stadium faithful as he took his place in the Rotherham dugout for the first time alongside his assistant Kevin Blackwell. Following a slow opening by both teams, the visitors had the first sight of goal when Jacques Maghoma tried his luck from distance and his dragged effort almost fell kindly for the onrushing Clayton Donaldson, who was inches away from reaching his cross-cumshot. Maghoma was in the thick of the early action and his drilled cross was smothered by Lee Camp at the second attempt by his near post before Rotherham had their first foray of note when Camp punted a long ball forward which saw Danny Ward
stick out a leg as he looked to make a timely contact towards goal but the ball evaded his attentions. Moments later, Rotherham failed to deal with Ryan Shotton’s bullet throw and City had a two-on-one at the far post which saw Maghoma take Frazer Richardson out of the game to give Jonathan Grounds a sight of goal but the full-back fluffed his lines when his tame shot failed to trouble Camp. The Millers came within a whisker of the opener when Chris Burke worked hard to win a corner paving the way for Joe Newell to swing a tantalising centre which was knocked down by an unmarked Kirk Broadfoot into the six-yard box whereby Paul Green was agonisingly inches away from turning the ball home. Derbyshire almost came back to haunt his former club when he left Paul Robinson in his wake to advance with menace into the Blues box to strike a rasping effort which Tomasz Kuszczak was forced to parry over. The Polish ‘keeper was called into action again when Richardson’s hanging cross saw Richard Wood have an aerial duel with the Blues stopper and the ball rolled tantalisingly into the path of Danny Ward, who struck an effort which was blocked en-route to goal by Michael Morrison, with the home fans appealing the ball had struck his hand but the referee waved away home protests. The Millers had stepped on the gas and Danny Ward fired a daisycutter which stung the palms of Kuszczak before the exHuddersfield striker blazed a volley over in Rotherham’s next attack. Joe Mattock became the first to see yellow
for a late lunge on Will Buckley before Richie Smallwood’s clipped ball saw Danny Ward volley into the danger area but Shotton was on-hand to prevent Derbyshire turning the ball goalwards. Following the interval, the visitors were inches away from making the breakthrough when Newell was penalised for bundling over Shotton and Maikel Kieftenbeld swung an inviting free-kick which was inchperfect for the run of Paul Robinson, who headed narrowly wide of the target with Camp a helpless bystander. Moments later, Jon Toral’s threaded ball saw Wood in a footrace with Donaldson which saw the Blues striker get there narrowly ahead of the home defender, who hauled him over, which earned Wood a caution before Kieftenbeld became the next to incur the wrath of the referee when he cynically brought Derbyshire down near the touchline to join him in the book. Just before the hour mark, a clever ball between two defenders saw Burke sneak around the back of the Blues rearguard and the Forest loanee drilled a low cross to the near post which saw Shotton block Derbyshire’s attempt to turn the ball home from close range before the ball fell kindly for Danny Ward, whose snap shot was smartly smothered by the body of Kuszczak. At the other end, Wood’s misplaced pass saw Toral give Donaldson a glimpse of goal and the Blues striker fired a rasping effort which had Camp at full stretch as he palmed the ball to safety. Newell’s clever cross found Danny Ward in acres of space but
his header flashed wide of the target when he maybe should have done better before Broadfoot headed wide from Smallwood’s deep corner in the Millers’ next attack. With little between the sides, Newell’s eye-ofa-needle pass saw Danny Ward try an ambitious effort from distance which had Kuszczak nervously scurrying across goal as it whistled past the upright. The Millers had Camp to thank for preserving parity when Toral’s perfectly weighted pass saw Maghoma race clear but the Rotherham ‘keeper kept his nerve as he stood up tall to smother his attempted dink. Just seconds after Rotherham made a double substitution, the home side’s hopes of winning the game suffered a blow when Wood received a second yellow card after Donaldson tumbled over his challenge. Warnock reshuffled his pack with newly introduced Greg Halford reverting to a central defensive position after being initially employed on the right hand side of midfield. Halford proved his worth immediately when he was on-hand with a superb headed clearance which snuffed out Grounds’ dangerous centre before he proved a handful further forward with an acrobatic effort which narrowly cleared the visitors bar, but any goal would have been chalked off by the referee. In the dying seconds, Mattock became the next to be sent for an early bath when he was shown a second yellow card, apparently for time wasting. Despite the numerical deficit, the Millers held firm to open their points account under their new boss.
Neil Warnock praised his side’s application as they earned a hardfought point in a 0-0 draw against Sky Bet Championship high-flyers Birmingham City. The Millers finished the game with nine men following the dismissals of Richard Wood and Joe Mattock but the Millers’ boss paid tribute to the hosts’ endeavour on a chilly afternoon in South Yorkshire. “I’ve got 16 games to have a go and that’s what they did, it’s all I can ask. I said after the game to the lads they couldn’t have given me any more,” Warnock enthused. We go to Burnley next week now and they’re all tough games coming up, but I really enjoyed it. I thought the fans were very good, and if the players give everything, you can’t ask anymore than that. I thought we deserved all three points today, but I’m normally biased aren’t I?” Warnock reserved special praise for the recalled Paul Green as well as commending Danny Ward for his contribution in the forward line and says that it will be up to substitute Greg Halford to grasp his opportunity. “I thought Green was superb today. He’s played for me before, so he knows me inside out, but then I thought everyone played well. I can’t remember Lee Camp having too much to do, apart from the one save where he got a little bit of a knock. I thought Danny Ward had a good game up top, and the two wide lads ran all day for me. I was delighted. I think Greg Halford has his strengths and his weaknesses; we’re just trying to work on his strengths. The opportunity is there for him, he knows that, it’s a short time – only a couple of months – but places are up for grabs.” Wood and Mattock both received their marching orders for second bookable offences and Warnock admitted that the resulting suspensions for the pair will allow other members of his Rotherham United squad to stake a claim for a place in the starting 11. “The referee has been consistent all day, but I don’t think either of them deserved to go,” he explained. In fairness to the referee, I don’t think he remembered he booked Mattock, and when he realised he had to give a red. It will give someone an opportunity. This is how I see it, it was the same when I was at Sheffield United.” Warnock concluded by expressing his delight at being back involved in the cut and thrust of first-team action and insists his side must continue to battle right until the final whistle is blown on the 2015/16 campaign. “I do enjoy the match day, especially when you have a group of lads like this, when they’re honest that’s all you can ask for,” he added. I said to the lads that it’s only one game gone, imagine what you can do in the next 15? It’s exciting times. We’ve just got to carry on, we’re all going to win games, all the three teams above us all won. We got to look after ourselves, it’s a good point, and we got to move on now. Its Burnley next week and no one will give us a chance, but I think we can compete with anyone at the moment.”

BLADES NEWS2015/16 NEW-LOOK BLADES EDGE DERBY PLAY AT THE LANE Che Adams scored the decisive goal, as the Blades completed a first league double of the season at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday. Adams starting up front in place of the injured Billy Sharp poked home just before the break as the Blades gained a deserved success in having dominated much of the South Yorkshire derby. For the short trip down the M18, boss Nigel Adkins made four changes to his starting XI. On a bitterly cold afternoon, it was the Blades who had the first shot on goal. Reed’s cross was controlled by Baxter who then tried to beat Neal with a lob, but the goalkeeper tipped it over for a corner. The Blades continued to force the opening exchanges and came even closer to opening the scoring when Collins headed against the crossbar from Baxter’s inswinging corner.
But with a swirling wind going round the Keepmoat, United were almost caught out by a long ball forward by Taylor-Sinclair, but Williams was eventually crowded out and the danger averted. At the other end, Calvert-Lewin headed into the side netting at the back post from Brayford’s deep cross. Despite enjoying the lion share of possession and appearing to be gaining the upper hand, the Blades had two scares in quick succession midway through the first-half, first Tyson got the better of Edgar before Williams saw his goal bound shot blocked, then Williams beat Long to Evina’s cross only for Edgar to hack clear off the line. As the half progressed, the home faithful continued to grow more frustrated as United controlled the game and that dominance was rewarded in the 42nd minute with a well taken
goal. Baxter got hold of the ball in midfield and spotted the run of ADAMS, who got the better of the retreating Butler before toe poking past the advancing Neal. Doncaster made a change at the break with Alcock replacing Butler, a switch that saw Stewart playing in a more advanced role. The first meaningful action of the second period saw Collins head at goal from Hammond’s cross. For Rovers, Gooch switched play to Stewart who stung the palms of Long at his near post. The home side had started the second-half brightly and had their best chance of the game in the 57th minute. Stewart and Gooch combined on the right, before the latter whipped in an inviting ball that just eluded the outstretched foot of Middleton. On the hour, Alcock went into the book for a cynical lunge on Reed. Hammond became the first Blade
to go into the book for a foul on Mandeville, as the game became scrappy. With 18 minutes remaining United had a golden opportunity to double the advantage, Adams threw a dummy which saw him get the better of his marker and he teed up Reed who was denied by Neal’s outstretched leg. The hosts continued to be frustrated as a flurry of substitutes took place as the game entered its latter stages. In the 88th minute, United suffered a scare, as both Tyson and Mandeville failed to capitalise after Edgar failed to deal with Alcock’s low cross from the right, whilst Baxter high and wide as four minutes of injury-time we signalled by the fourth official. With the 3,784 Blades fans in full voice, the added time passed without incident as United professionally saw the game out and deservedly returned to winning ways.
Businesses, local football clubs and individuals are being given the opportunity to realise a footballing dream of playing on a professional football pitch by Sheffield United. The Blades are taking bookings for the chance to play on the new stateof-the-art Desso pitch at the Club’s Bramall Lane stadium, giving football fans the chance to play in the oldest professional football stadium in the world. The Lane will be available at the end of the 2015/16 season for a limited time - and businesses, teams or even groups of friends can pay to play on the pitch at the home of Sheffield United. From corporate events and inter-company matches with colleagues, to charity events or even a game between friends, the Lane will be available for all purposes. One of the first businesses to take part will be KnowHow, based in Sheffield city centre, following their participation last year. OWLS NEWS2015/16 OWLS UP PRESSURE ON TOP TWO IT’S ALL ABOUT THE DYNAMICS!
Sheffield Wednesday systematically dismantled ten-man Brentford to cement their place in the Championship top six. After Yoann Barbet saw red after just six minutes, the Owls took full advantage and fired three first half goals through Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper and Kieran Lee to all but put the game to bed by half time. Substitute Lucas Joao completed the rout near the end of a second half was little more than academic as Wednesday did everything that was asked of them in making the most of their numerical advantage. It was an explosive start to the game in cold conditions at Hillsborough, with Brentford creating two clear chances just before suffering the huge blow that laid the foundations for defeat. First, Nico
Yannaris shot tamely at Keiren Westwood after ghosting in on goal then Alan Judge forced a superb save from the Owls’ number one. But the Bees’ enterprising intentions crumbled when Barbet chased a long Tom Lees ball down with Gary Hooper and the defender felled his man – the red card that followed was inevitable. Things then went from bad to worse for the visitors as Wednesday took the lead on 12 minutes. Daniel Pudil crossed into the heart of the penalty area, where Forestieri was perfectly placed to glance past David Button. Brentford responded with Sergi Canos trying his luck from 20 yards and Westwood palmed to safety before the keeper was the provider for the Owls’ second goal on 29 minutes. Westwood delivered a long punt

upfield that sat up nicely for Hooper, who promptly unleashed a bullet of a half volley that Button touched but could not prevent bulging the net. Kieran Lee and Barry Bannan both went close before the former got his goal almost on the half time whistle. Bannan was the architect, playing a delightful ball to Hooper, who headed into the path of Lee to do the necessaries from close range. The Bees offered more in the early throes of the second half Westwood saved well from Judge – but the Owls soon returned to the box seat. Substitute Aiden McGeady caused problems on his home debut and sent one drive from distance inches wide, while Forestieri went close following some trademark trickery in the box. Lewis McGugan and Lucas Joao were also given a run from the bench in the closing stages and it was the latter who put matters to bed two minutes from time, thumping home on the angle following a cute ball inside from Jack Hunt.
When it comes to records, stats and awards, Carlos Carvalhal looks the other way and insists the only important thing is the next game. It is a belief that has stuck with the head coach since day one and one taken on board by the squad. And it is certainly serving the club well as the Owls strengthened their position in the play-off pack over the weekend. A comfortable 4-0 victory over Brentford continued the fine run and those goals also saw Wednesday become top scorers in the Championship. But
naturally unmoved by a statistic such as this one, Carlos said: “I am asked questions about records and I don’t understand why. I don’t care about the Coach of the Month, the Player of the Month, the Player of the Week, the Player of the Day. To me, the most important is the team. The individual prizes are a consequence of the dynamic of the team. Everything will be good if we win the next match because if you don’t, then nothing is good. The next game is the most important and everything around this; points, records, games
unbeaten, best player, best coach, best kitmen, best physio and so on, this is all artificial. This is not important to us. What is important to us? Preston.” Speaking of which, the head coach has hailed the supporters who are set to travel to Preston in their thousands this coming weekend. It’s a total sell-out for the Deepdale clash and Carvalhal says everyone has nothing but respect for that loyal support. He added: “It will be a tough game but we will go there with over 5,000 fans and we have a lot of respect for them.”
FERNANDO THANKS TEAMMATES
Following Wednesday’s 4-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday, a quick glance at the goals for column shows the Owls are top scorers as things stand in the Sky Bet Championship. The Owls have hit 49 goals in the league this season and 22 of those have come from the developing partnership of Fernando Forestieri and Gary Hooper. Speaking after victory at Hillsborough this weekend, Forestieri says his impressive goal return is a result of the hard work of his team mates. After heading home the Owls’ first of the afternoon against the Bees and his 12th of the season, Forestieri thanked his fellow Owls and said: “I want to say thank you to my team because they have helped me to get the goals. Now I have scored 12 and I
hope for more but for me, it doesn’t matter who scores. Everyone is important, everyone is working hard for the team and that is the most important. Who scores the goals doesn’t matter, the important thing is the next game and that you get the three points.” Wednesday remain undefeated in the Championship in 2016 and will take their impressive form to Preston next weekend looking to increase the

pressure on the teams currently occupying the top two places. Over 5,000 supporters will head to Deepdale and Forestieri says that now becomes the only focus of the players. “Everyone is happy because we win and stay in the play-offs and now we focus on Preston. The team are working so hard and we will do that again next week and the most important thing is that we go there to play well and win the game.”
