How did Mary and Joseph know that Jesus was 7lb 6oz when he was born They had a weigh in the manger. My wife and I are having a competition to see who can steal the most dog related stuff from our local petshop..I’ve just taken the lead. I burnt my Hawaiian Pizza last night. Must use Aloha setting. My dog only responds to commands in Spanish. He’s Espanyol. I went to get some air put into my tyres the other day. The attendant tried to charge me £10, I was like, “£10?? That’s so expensive, it’s just air!”The attendant said, “Well, that’s inflation for you.” I used to have a job as a drill operator. It was well boring. THE WICKER GETS CREATIVE BOOST FROM SHEFFIELD ARTS CHARITY AND STUDIO PROVIDER Local studio provider and arts charity CADS (Creative Arts Development Space) has been breathing life into Sheffield’s creative industries since 2009. In 2015, CADS reached a landmark in operating over 100 studios to rent-out to Sheffield’s creative entrepreneurs. 2016 is set to be an even bigger year with the acquisition of Waverly House in the The Wicker, a 4-floor complex with huge potential. Sheffield’s creative industries have put the city on the map. Sheffield’s music is worldrenowned and the city is increasingly being seen as a centre for digital industry. Removing barriers for people who have ideas is central to CADS. Operating at a grassroots level, the mission has always been to provide affordable space to people regardless of their social or economic circumstances. 80% of CADS studios are under £50 per week to rent. Waverly House is the latest building revived by CADS. This four-storey complex was previously used for light industry and legal practice, it will now be transformed into a hub of creative enterprise, social projects and start-ups. The size of the building means it will be perfect for facilitating already established organisations who are looking for larger premises. Waverly house boasts 13,300 sq feet, onsite parking and

is situated 5 mins from the city centre. The Wicker is an undervalued but iconic part of the city-centre. With the renovation process just beginning, there is huge potential for organisations and interested customers to shape the interior of the building, and be intimately involved in a transformational project in the heart of Sheffield. Deputy Leader & Cabinet Member for Business, Skills & Development, Leigh Brammall, said; “Sheffield has a huge amount of creative talent and we are keen to support organisations like CADS to provide spaces for budding entrepreneurs and artists to develop these ideas

and, hopefully, to contribute towards the vibrancy of the city and local economy in the future’’

Sam Parkin, the Business Manager of CADS had this to say; "After surpassing the 100studio milestone last year, we're hugely excited to now be reviving our first building in this historical and iconic part of Sheffield in 2016. With views out over the city centre, which is only 5 minutes away, four expansive floors and 150mb fibre-optic internet, Waverly House is perfectly positioned to become a hub of creative and social enterprise in The Wicker."

SCHOOL KIDS BECOME SHEFFIELD'S YOUNGEST COMMUNITY FRIENDS Pupils from Windmill Hill School have become NHS Community Friends after the school's governors nominated them to receive certificates for the scheme which is run by NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The pupils, from Year One and Year Three, all visited local care home John Trickett House in the

run-up to Christmas and performed carols as part of a project based around the John Lewis Christmas advert exploring loneliness and isolation in older people. Dr Zak McMurray, GP and Medical Director at NHS CCG said: "I am delighted that Sheffield schools are recognising the importance of supporting older and more vulnerable members of our community and helping pupils to understand this from a young age. "The community friends scheme was set up for just this purpose. The school and pupils shouldn't underestimate the impact visiting the home and singing for the residents will have had on ensuring positive mental health. "In winter we see too many older people in hospital for falls and exacerbated respiratory conditions, if everyone did their bit to help vulnerable people stay well, both physically and mentally, in their homes,

we would be able to protect a great many of them from worsening health."We are keen for more organisations and individuals to nominate their Community Friends to help everyone recognise the importance of taking small steps to support our vulnerable and elderly friends, relatives and neighbours." Mrs Katy Davison, Chair of Governors at Windmill Hill School said: "I was lucky enough to accompany one of the groups of pupils down to John Trickett House and they performed wonderfully. I've also spoken to them in assembly about Community Friends and the importance of good mental health and they responded with sensitivity and enthusiasm. I have never been prouder to be a governor at Windmill and I'm confident that being involved in community friends will only strengthen the consideration and respect that our pupils give older people in our community."

VOLUNTEERING AMBASSADORS DEMENTIA In 2014 Sheffield Volunteer Centre launched our Ambassadors Project in response to requests from organisations, to attend events and give talks or chat to clients about the benefits of volunteering. Our Volunteer Ambassadors are people of all ages, from a wide range of backgrounds, who are passionate about volunteering, have voluntary experience in different settings, and can talk to people across Sheffield about how they could get involved. We have visited work clubs, college classes, self help courses, and university career fairs and spoken to hundreds of people about how volunteering can help everyone. Talks cover topics such as: • the basic of what volunteering is, and what to expect • practical matters such as reclaiming travel expenses • how volunteering can benefit people socially, mentally and physically • how volunteering can increase employability • details of how to register with us to search for voluntary opportunities If you love volunteering and would like to encourage other people to volunteer too then you could be an Ambassador. There’s good evidence that volunteering brings benefits to both the person volunteering and the people and organisations they support. Volunteering involves spending unpaid time doing something to help other people or groups, other than (or as well as) close relatives.

Evidence suggests that volunteering brings health benefits to both the volunteers and the people they help. In an attempt to measure the benefits on volunteers, Volunteering England commissioned the University of Wales to undertake a review of research on the subject. Dr Rachel Casiday, lecturer at the Department of Voluntary Sector Studies at the University of Wales, Lampeter, led the review. “Volunteering can yield as many benefits, if not more, for the volunteers themselves,” says Dr Casiday. A May 2012 study by the Royal Voluntary Service (formerly the WRVS) found that volunteering in later life decreased depression and social isolation. It was also found to boost quality of life and life satisfaction. Volunteering can also help people take their mind off their own problems. Volunteering is a good way to meet people. This can be vital for older volunteers and people who might be isolated or not particularly integrated into society. How can you volunteer? There are volunteering opportunities in many organisations including Sheffield 50+. Contact us on 0114 2536736. The Sheffield Volunteer Centre is part of Voluntary Action Sheffield and runs drop in sessions from 10am to 4pm every Monday and Wednesday at the Circle Building, 33 Rockingham Lane, Sheffield S1 4FW. For more information Tel: 0114 253 6600 or look on the website www.vas.org.uk/volunteering.

WORKSHOP

Home Instead Senior care are running the 2nd of their free workshops in March. The Workshops are specifically aimed at carers/families of people who are living with dementia. These are also proving hugely beneficial to members of the community too, who are eager to learn more about living and working with people affected by this most debivolunteering ambassadorslitating disease. Too often older people suffering with Alzheimer’s or one of the other forms of dementia, are moved into care homes earlier than is necessary, simply because family carers feel unable to cope. The Workshop will be held at the new Birley Fire Station, Moor Valley, Sheffield, S20 5FA. If anyone would like to book a place, please ring Kathy Markwick, Home Instead Senior Care, on 0114 2469666.

MIND BODY SPIRIT EVENT Water Lily Events are hosting a Mind Body Spirit Fair at Grenoside Community on Sunday 13th March 2016 from 11am to 4pm. Entry is free and there will be over 30 stalls including healers, crystals, tarot, reiki, indian head massage and many more. Hot and cold refreshments will be available and there is free car parking. THE SPECTACULAR RIVERDANCE DOMINIC WEST CELEBRATES IT’S 21st ANNIVERSARY LEADS CAMPAIGN WITH SHEFFIELD CITY HALL SHOW FOR SHEFFIELD THEATRES The spectacular Riverdance sets off on a full UK tour this spring, the tour which marks the show’s 21st birthday will visit 13 venues across the UK from this March calling in at Sheffield City Hall between Tuesday 5th April and Thursday 7th April. Tickets ar enow available from www. livenation.co.uk or www.ticketmaster.co.uk. The cast for this tour will feature, for the first time, some dancers who were actually born in the same year that the show first opened; 1995 at the Point Theatre in Dublin! This is an unmissable chance for UK audiences to reconnect with what the Irish Times rightly described as “The Original... The Best”. The Washington Post exclaimed, “Its continued popularity proves that it was, and remains, a phenomenon of historic proportions!” Composed by Bill Whelan, Produced by Moya Doherty and Directed by John McColgan, Riverdance has performed across the UK where it has been experienced by over 2.9 million people in well over 1000 performances and the show has lost none of its magic. The worldwide TV audience for Riverdance is in excess of 2 billion people. Producer Moya Doherty said, “Twenty one years after the curtains opened on the first show in 1995,

we are proud to be still performing all around the world. We always look forward to our dates in the UK and these shows are sure to be very special. To celebrate our anniversary we have enhanced the production with new lighting, new costumes and a new number. The best of Riverdance with new energy from a stunning young cast of dancers many of whom were not yet born when the show started!” Riverdance has received rave reviews globally but perhaps the simplicity of The Guardian’s verdict sums it up: “Dance does not often get so good”. Riverdance is a celebration of Irish dance and culture, presented with sophistication and vibrancy.” The Hollywood Reporter acclaimed, “The sort of spectacle and experience that comes along once in a lifetime.” This series of dates in 2016 represent a chance for UK Riverdance fans old and new to celebrate an incredible milestone for an incredible show. Twenty one years after the show first opened, a truly phenomenal piece of theatrical entertainment is back by popular demand. Truly, Riverdance has come of age!

Tickets for Riverdance 21st Anniversary Tour (subject to booking fees) at City Hall - Sheffield are available online at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk in person at the City Hall Box Office or by calling 0114 2 789 789. Tickets are restricted to a maximum of 8 tickets per person.

JUMP-INC TO OPEN SECOND TRAMPOLINE PARK AT MEADOWHALL The high-flying craze is kicking off in Sheffield, a giant indoor trampoline park that will let people bounce off the walls and jump high enough to make a slam dunk will open at Meadowhall this Spring and be a first for Sheffield. The Jump Inc. Trampoline Park will be one of the biggest in the UK, with enough trampolines for a wide variety of activities, including dodgeball, wall running, slam dunk nets, jump towers, tumble tracks and fitness classes. The UK’s first large scale Ninja park is also planned which will operate at the same premises. The site is 36,000 square feet and will host over 140 interconnected trampolines, airbags, slam dunk nets and professional trampolines - making it fun for all the family. There will also be instructed classes for trampolining, Urban-Jump, fitness classes and wall running. A safety briefing room will ensure members of the public are fully aware of how to get the most out of their air time while at Jump-Inc. The purpose built park will operate seven days a week and will also feature a cafe, viewing gallery and six party rooms. Located in the bustling area of Meadowhall, the park stands alone on the site with onsite parking and easy access routes to public transport. Chris Hayes, the founder of Jump Inc., who grow up in Handsworth, Sheffield said, “ Our first trampoline park at Parkgate, Rotherham has been a huge success with over 35,000 jumpers in our first month alone. The demand from the local community has been overwhelming and we are often fully booked to capacity 3 or 4 days in advance which, has given us

the confidence to open a larger park at Meadowhall. The demand for Jump-Inc is definitely there and this new park will enable us to increase our capacity and develop our offering further. This is a very exciting project to be pulling together. It's a huge investment in the local region and we will be creating 70 new jobs at the Meadowhall park. We wanted to do this in our local community to promote health, wellbeing and quality family time - encouraging all ages to get active while having fun.” “Our aim is to be market leaders in the UK with more parks planned over the next three years. While this is a new sector in the UK leisure market, we aim to lead the sector through innovation, park design and out-of-this-world customer service for an unrivalled leisure experience in a safe environment.” We will be looking to recruit local people to become part of the business and help us grow Jump Inc. into the UK's leading trampoline park operator. You can find more information at www.jump-inc.co.uk and Facebook- Jump Inc UK

Actor Dominic West is leading a fund-raising campaign to encourage people to sign-up as regular donors to Sheffield Theatres. Dominic has wonderful memories of performing on the Crucible stage, playing Professor Henry Higgins in the 2012 Christmas musical My Fair Lady, and Iago in the 2011 production of Othello. He saw first-hand how passionate and loyal the Sheffield audience is, and wanted help make sure the exciting and challenging theatre produced in Sheffield can continue for future generations to enjoy. Dominic West commented: ‘The Crucible is very special. We are so lucky to have this outstanding theatre in Sheffield and that’s why I’m getting behind a campaign to raise money to support the work of Sheffield Theatres. Giving a small amount of money on a regular basis is a great way to make sure we can all experience the most exciting, spectacular and thought-provoking theatre here in Sheffield - now and in the future.’ Being a Regular Donor doesn’t have to mean giving large sums of money; current supporters give from £3.00 per month. Production costs can range from £30 for a make-up artist for an hour, £120 for a pair of men’s plain tap shoes, £300 for a handmade hat and £400 for one bespoke wig. By making a donation people will see the impact of their support every night on stage.

As well as working with acclaimed actors such as Dominic, Sheffield Theatres is committed to developing new and emerging talent and working with the local community. Sheffield People’s Theatre brings participants from across the city, from every generation, and from every walk of life to the theatre. 120 members, aged from 12 to 84, took part in the production of Camelot: The Shining City last year. They learnt skills such as stage combat and performed on the Crucible stage, outside in Tudor Square and The Peace Gardens. Donations to Sheffield Theatres help to make these kinds of opportunities a reality. If you can help then please sign up as a Regular Donor by contacting Leah Woffenden in the Fundraising department on 0114 201 3820 or l.woffenden@sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Alternatively donation forms are available from the Crucible and Lyceum Theatres.

TWO GLOBAL MEGASTARS TO HEADLINE THIS YEAR’S V FESTIVAL Preview: V Festival, 20-21/08/16 By Kt Evans

Is it just us, or is spring quickly sneaking up on us? Ok ok so there might still be flurries of snow lying on the hills but we have simply over looked that as we are all so desperate to don our flip-flops and get those flower crowns out. Enticing us with the plan of a spectacular summer, V Fest 2016 has announced its very first string of bands who are set to perform at this year’s event, which will once again capture our summer spirit from 20th – 21st August. Held across two venues throughout the UK, Weston Park in Staffordshire is the location for what is tipped to be the highlight of 2016. Spread out over hundreds of acres to include five stages, heaps of camping space and a line-up to blow your socks off, let us waste no time by announcing the headliners… 2015 was the year of one performer…Justin Bieber. With his third studio album flying into the number one spot in over thirty countries, the Canadian superstar is to headline V Fest 2016 on Sunday 21st August. Little introduction needs to be given to Biebs who has literally seized the international music industry and created Belibers across continents. Long gone are the days when it was pretty laughable to like Biebs (we were fans from the beginning actually!!!), transforming himself into the world’s most adored performer. With huge hits to include “Love Yourself,” “Sorry” and “What Do You Mean,” we strongly suggest you purchase a set of ear plugs as we are to expect screaming girls galore. Up next, the mighty Rihanna. Famed for her worldwide dance floor fillers and international chart toppers, the star is back in headlining position after seizing the festival four years ago. Having recently released her newest single, “Work” (featuring Drake)

Rihanna sure as hell knows how to deliver to the masses. Joining her and also former headliner of V Festival, David Guetta. With summer sessions at some of the world’s biggest clubs to include Pacha in Ibiza, London and Miami, this superstar DJ has crafted some of the world’s most recognised and iconic tracks. Having worked with the likes of Nikki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown, this French enigma is set to supply the weekend with ultimate party hits. Having worked alongside David Guetta on various singles, Sia has also been announced at V Festival 2016 performer. With hits to include “Chandelier,” “Titanium” and the infamous “Elastic Heart” which featured Shia Labeouf in the controversial video, the Australian singer songwriter has over twenty years experience under her belt, alongside a whole host of international accolades. Whatever Sia has in store for us at V Festival this year, we are absolutely positive it is going to be spectacular. Little Mix. How can you not adore them?! “Black Magic” was our anthem last year, whilst “Love Me Like You” got us all teary and emosh. Having been the only group in history to win The X Factor, Little Mix have gone onto smash their way into the US Billboard Top 200, win Teen Choice Awards and have their very own UK Arena headline tour. If you have yet to give their most recent single a listen, “Secret Love Song” featuring Jason Derulo, we guarantee it will give you all the feels. Also announced for V Festival 2016 are Kaiser Chiefs, Years & Years, John Newman, Tinie Tempah, Example, Jess Glyne, Jake Bugg, Rita Ora, Bastille, Faithless, James Morrison, Katy B, Craig David and many more. Tickets go on sale 26th February with Virgin Media members pre-sale tickets available for purchase now. See the website for full details. www.vfestival.com.

WANTED

FOR NEW 60s& 70s CLUB & PARTY BAND TELEPHONE

07809 868737

Upon conception, bands have several choices as to which road to travel on, how they should sound and what they choose to be known as. British gang Thunder, a name not best suited one at first may have thought, have defied all doubters and albeit not completely free from headaches have ploughed on, knowing that in the live arena they hold no fears, as this small trek across our shores proved. Openers King King kicked things off and being fair received warm applause from the full seats, but having Bradford boys Terrorvision as main support really was a master stroke as this lot deliver with fire, energy and great catchy tunes. All their best stuff was there and front man Tony Wright was beyond fitness. The guy never stopped, filling the stage from every angle cumulating with a head stand to close their time, thus giving me the feeling that the headliners would certainly have their work cut out. Thunder struck the stage at 9pm to a defining welcome and opened with newer tunes off their latest long-player Wonder Days. In total five were aired which I felt was good planning as some bands do pander to the past. Not that Thunder ignored this, as we had Resurrection Day another new one off current long-player, River Of Pain, and the brilliant Back Street Symphony, complete with mass

audience participation. Opting to drop the pace again wasn’t the smartest of moves though as once you have your audience up, you need to keep them up. That said, Love Walked In worked as did the ever popular Love You More Than Rock And Roll, both showcasing vocalist Danny Bowes at his best. In fact they were all at their best, especially recently recovered Ben Mathews, now complete with neatly trimmed hair style. With the encore featuring Serpentine and of course Dirty Love the London boys bid us good night as some of us made our way to the ‘After Show’ party. I fully admit to being slightly biased towards British rock, and why shouldn’t I? Tonight fully affirmed my belief that if you work hard and stick at it, write some decent tunes and perform to the best of your abilities without being over vulgar to your paymasters, luck will weather through.

Cheery indie pop five-some Eliza and the Bear entertained a packed crowd at the Plug on Tuesday last week (16th Feb). Their new album is quickly approaching it's release date (early April) so there was a high level of hype in the build up to this gig, with the quintet gaining recognition recently with air play on Radio 1 plus being signed to Capitol. The promising new indie band were set to perform at 9pm but before that Michael Cassidy and Into The Arc warmed up the room leaving everyone pumped and thoroughly excited for what was to come. Eagerly awaited headliners, Eliza and the Bear, finally graced the stage to smoke, lights and an appreciative full room opening with their newest track ‘Lion’s Heart’. This band do a great job at what some can find difficult- creating chirpy, melodic indie pop that doesn't appear repetitive. Every track is fresh and pleasing on the ear, not only that but each song can get the crowd going and this band will definitely be tearing up festival season.

Tracks like "Brothers Boat" and "Light it up" made their set compellingly jovial and clearly loved by everyone in the room. It's obvious that it is impossible to feel down or even stand still at an Eliza and the Bear concert. Their universally cheery vibe is certainly able to get any crowd moving and everyone dancing. Moving through the set list the crowd were treated to some of the new tracks that will feature on their self-titled debut album released in April this year – an album much anticipated for some time by any self-respecting indie pop fan. Tracks like, ‘Make It On My Own’, show off a slightly darker, gritty edge to the London outfit. The newer tracks like this received a very well reception and the room seemed eager to hear what else the band could do, as was I. On the other hand new track, ‘Cruel’, gets to show another more tender side of the usually joyous quintet. Though the track originally played acoustically by lead vocalist James and guitarist Martin, the song has been transformed into a full band ballad belter. In certain tracks heavy influences from Arcade Fire and Bombay Bicycle Club can be heard. The night drew to a close with an encore of ‘Friends’ and ‘It Gets Cold’; two tracks that showcase the best of Eliza and the Bear have to offer. 'It Gets Cold' was actually dedicated on the night to close friends of the band, Viola Beach, which gained roars of approval from the crowd. Eliza and the Bear are incredibly polished overall and don't cease to get the party started- definitely keep your eyes peeled for their future work, they're a band to watch this year and will no doubt chart with their upcoming album.

DRIVING SNAG HUNDREDS OF FOR NEW BOND DRIVERS IN AIRBAG ALERT CAR OWNER An auction-goer has successfully bid nearly £2.5 million for a James Bond car he won't be able to drive in public. Bond's latest Aston Martin DB10 can achieve 190mph from its 4.7-litre petrol engine. Driving it along public roads is strictly forbidden, although 007 actor Daniel Craig has signed the vehicle. The eventual £2,434,500 winning bid smashed the £1 million reserve price at the Christie's London sale. Nine other Aston Martin DB10s were tailor-made for the Spectre movie, but only one other shares its "show car" status. The remaining eight sports car were all adapted for use during filming of 007's latest movie. The Warwickshire-built V8-motored vehicle proved a big hit with Regent Street Motor Show-goers last October. A month later, fans got to learn about the new Bond car at a drive-in biopic at Blenheim Palace. Last Week’s Spectre - The Auction helped to raise £2,785,500 charity money across 10 lots. Craig's Day of the Dead costume in the same film fetched £98,500 at the auction. Aston and Bond have been inextricably link for 52 years now since the third movie in the franchise, Goldfinger used a DB5.

Hundreds of motorists could be driving around with faulty airbags, police are warning. This follows reports of counterfeit bags allegedly being sold on eBay to 680 companies and private drivers. They have all been urged to have their cars checked straight away. This is because factory tests show that these bags will not behave like a proper airbag in the event of an accident. Police say that these bags present a real danger to people who may have bought one. It is believed that just over a fifth of the purchasers bought allegedly bogus Honda Accord and CRV airbags. As well as these 148 buyers, detectives are trying to work out if the other 532 buys involve other counterfeit parts. Police are advising all 680 purchasers to get their local dealerships to carry out safely checks as a matter of urgency. The City of London force started their investigations last month after a tip-off from Honda Motor Europe and the Intellectual Property Office. This pair reported that counterfeit bags were allegedly being traded on eBay’s online auction website. Inquiries discovered that private drivers and smaller companies bought the items. On Thursday (February 18) morning detectives arrested a man suspected of money laundering and counterfeiting crimes. Copyright Press Association 2016.

A Rotherham charity hoping to paint a brighter future by winning a national competition has made a final plea for votes. Rotherham Rise is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and has recently moved into new premises on Main Street which is being transformed into a women’s centre to provide support for women and children affected by domestic and sexual abuse. The women’s centre will also offer support, courses, activities, events and groups for all women. It is one of four finalists competing for the makeover prize in the Johnstone’s Trade Community Spirit campaign. Community projects around the UK were invited by the leading paint manufacturer to submit applications for the competition, with the winner receiving a redecoration of its facility up to the value of £10,000. Well over 100 entries from projects were received, with a judging panel selecting four for the shortlist based on criteria such as the impact the project has on the community and the urgency for redecoration. With just a week to go before the public vote closes next Monday (February 29), Rotherham Rise has called on the public to get online to boost its chances of success. To vote for Rotherham Rise, visit www. johnstonestrade.com/communityspirit Sue Wynne, chief executive of Rotherham Rise, believes winning a complete redecoration of the facility would provide a huge boost to the charity. “We are in new premises and are delighted with our new building,” said Sue. “But if we were to win the Community Spirit competition, it would allow us to create a warm and friendly environment for people wanting to use the centre. “We would urge everyone to make the effort to go to the website and make their vote count.” Rotherham Rise’s quest to win Community Spirit is being backed by Rotherham United Football Club. Rotherham defender Frazer Richardson said: “I would urge everyone living in and around Rotherham to vote for Rotherham Rise.” The other shortlisted finalists are based in Glasgow, Nottingham and London. Richard Mazurkiewicz, marketing manager for Johnstone’s Trade, said: “We’ve seen huge interest in our Community Spirit campaign with thousands of votes already cast, but there is still time for people to make the difference by voting for their favourite project.”

Meze Publishing, a Sheffield-based publishing company specialising in cookbooks has been shortlisted for the Best Newcomer Award at the 2016 IPG Independent Publishing Awards, less than two years since publishing their first book. The awards are run by the Independent Publishers Guild and reward “outstanding achievement” in various fields of publishing. Meze are nominated for the Nick Robinson Newcomer Award alongside Orenda Books and PG Online with winners announced at the awards dinner on Thursday March 3. Meze is the brainchild of specialist cook book designer, Paul Cocker and experienced publishers Phil Turner and Nick Hallam. The firm specialises in publishing regional cook books alongside chef titles, including the likes of MasterChef finalist and Scottish Chef of the Year Adam Handling and Great British Menu’s Colin McGurran. Their Manchester Cook Book was recently the bestselling cook book in 10 Waterstones stores in the north west, outselling the likes of Jamie Oliver, Nigel Slater and Nigella Lawson. Their first book, The Sheffield Cook Book has been a big success, spawning a series of regional cookbooks in the same vein, called the ‘Get Stuck In’ series. These have featured a range of gastro pubs, restaurants, farm shops, delis and producers from around the UK as well as recipes from chefs

and celebrities such as Sat Bains, Aiden Byrne, Simon Rogan, Stuart Broad, Carl Froch and Jimmy Doherty. Later this year they are set to release titles from current MasterChef champion Simon Wood and two-Michelin starred chef and judge on Great British Menu, Daniel Clifford. “The last couple of years have been an amazing journey,” said co-owner Phil Turner. “To have achieved the success we have had and worked with so many amazing chefs has been hugely satisfying. “But the really exciting thing is there’s lots more to come from us – and hopefully being shortlisted for this award will create even more opportunities.” Phil was also keen to point out how valuable the IPG have been since they joined last year. “The IPG gives independent publishers the help and support they need to do better business, and with over 600 members of all different sizes, to be shortlisted for an award really is an honour,” he added. Previous IPG winners include Nosy Crow, Bloomsbury and Usborne Publishing. More information can be found at www. mezepublishing.co.uk

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve had my Angler’s Mail head on this week, after a call from the Features Editor revealed a need for some additional ‘Where to Fish’ video venue reviews for the UK’s best weekly coarse angling magazine… I do enjoy doing these video snippets, and they are getting much easier to do as my experience grows. They are not technical, it’s simply a case of “This is Clint Walker for Angler’s Mail TV”, and off we go with a few juicy details about the fishery pools, perhaps something of the topography of the lake, a tempter about fish sizes, a top tip, and a closing paragraph to wrap up two or three minutes of film to give Angler’s Mail readers something visual to investigate when they are choosing their next venue. I get to visit some lovely fisheries, meet some very pleasant people, chat to a few anglers, then enjoy a cuppa when I’m done…what more could you ask for from a ‘job’? I do try and make them interesting, and fill the few seconds I get with titbits that will be of use, but this week I’ve been somewhat mortified to listen to the audio. There is no getting away from it, I have perhaps the dullest voice known to man! Even I was bored! I like to think that my own words come across as quiet yet authoritive, dulcet and informative, but no, it’s dull; I’m dull. I apologise, I promise to try and liven things up in future…. It was bought home to me that there may be an issue when I shared a video update on a page I administer, only to be met with; “Cor, what a dreary voice” by one of the subscribers. I pleaded forgiveness for my tedium, and in reply, I got “Sorry mate, didn’t realise it was you” but I take the point, I make Michael Owen’s BT Sport commentary sound positively perky! I’ll try harder! This week, I visited Mere Moor Fishery in Barthomley, Staffordshire, and spoke to Martin, who was fishing the Specimen Pool, before I set up to film my brief piece, and, as I surveyed the four pool complex, I marvelled at just what there is to be seen whilst out fishing. I watched a brace of cock pheasants do battle in the adjacent field, each one leapfrogging the other as they fought for the mating high ground, I espied a kestrel flitting from tree to tree, and saw numerous hares and rabbits all within twenty yards of the nearest peg. In the bright winter sunshine, it was indeed a peaceful

place… I was pleased to find out more about the venue, chat to the visiting anglers, and generally wander unhindered around the fishery before departing for my next venue. Home Farm Fishery is renowned as a cat fishing mecca, packed with slippy creatures to 66lb, which are backed by some decent carp also reputed to run to almost 30lb. I have fished here before, in fact I caught my first ever cat from the Specimen Pool, a turbo charged moggie weighing just under 18lb, but one which got me hooked on these magnificent fish. It’s a great place to go for your first cat, and nestled on the outskirts of Alsager, it’s easy to get to. I always try to talk the owner to gain an insight to the fishery, but in truth, I’ve usually already checked the internet, and then I chat to the paying guest to get their thoughts too. Once I have a picture in my own mind, a few minutes thought about a suitable narrative, and I’m off again, administering a summary of what is on offer. This particular complex, in addition to offering some quality fishing, has extras such as heated cabins with onsite electricity, a fine lodge selling bait and tackle, and the opportunity for a cup of tea whilst enjoying the benefits of a wood burner…lovely! If you want to find out more about fisheries across the UK, you’ll have to look at the Angler’s Mail TV channel on Youtube, and if you can’t get the kids to sleep, let them watch the ones I do…

The complex has a well-stocked lake that provides top quality coarse fishing for all abilities with tackle hire and bait if needed, along with a specially designed restroom complete with toilet facilities. On site anglers can access experienced tuition and advice to hone your fishing skills, ensuring your day is fun and rewarding. The venture goes from strength to strength with lots of events and competitions lined up for 2016. This tranquil site, with far reaching views across the Derbyshire countryside has ten clearly marked pegs, with three having concrete bases making them ideal for disabled anglers. To support the business Andrew and Kathy also have two self-contained, fully equipped holiday flats, the latest being premium accommodation built in 2016 boasting a view over the fishery and the beautiful Amber Valley. ROVERS LOSE SECOND DERBY IN WEEK PAINFUL FOR CEDRIC Having suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Sheffield United on Saturday, Rovers return to action with another South Yorkshire derby making the short journey to face Barnsley at Oakwell. Darren Ferguson’s side had not lost on the road since 27th October 2015 and a win would be their first double of the season having beaten the Tykes 2-1 at Keepmoat Stadium in October. Conor Grant and Thorsten Stuckmann returned to the side for Darren Ferguson whilst Paul Keegan captained the side due to a James Coppinger injury. Barnsley had a chance inside the first five minutes. As Lloyd Isgrove picked up the ball, he delivered the cross. Attacking the far post Sam Winnall threw himself at the header which was inches past Stuckmann’s left post. The home side really applied pressure to the Rovers defence and dominated

possession early on. Adam Hammill was the next to go close as a wonderful run saw him cut inside before shooting narrowly past the post. Rovers first chance of the game came from a Conor Grant corner. As Mitchell Lund got on the end of it and headed towards goal, the conditions didn’t favour him as the ball skidded off his head and wide of the target. Stuckmann was called into action again as he made a brilliant reaction save from point blank range following another Barnsley corner. Darren Ferguson made two changes at half time. James Coppinger and Craig Alcock were introduced to the game, adding some experience to the side. The visitors started the second half lively and looked to take the lead. In acres of space on the right hand side, Coppinger picked out Lund. Driving at goal his powerful shot was parried by Adam Davies. As the second half went on the game

opened up and it was end to end. Rovers looked the better side but the hosts looked a definite threat on the counter. Conor Hourihane forced Stuckmann into yet another save as he hit one from range following some sloppy defending from Rovers. However, the German goalkeeper was there to turn it behind for a corner. Following a run of good saves, Barnsley finally managed to beat Stuckmann and went ahead with ten minutes to play. Sam Winnall struck a low shot at goal and despite Stuckmann making a good save, Ashley Fletcher was there to score the rebound from 3 yards leaving the Rovers keeper no chance. Lynden Gooch was introduced to the game with ten minutes to play as Rovers pushed for an equaliser but Barnsley did enough to see the game out and take the points.

33

Cedric Evina admitted that back to back local derby defeats are painful. “It hurts, it really hurts and we have to just stick together and keep our heads high,” said the energetic defender. Evina thanked the fans for their support but insisted on a reality check and the need to return to winning ways. “We got a great backing again, the fans were amazing and the players always want to do well. Since the new gaffer has come in I think all of the players are on board and trying to go in the right direction,” he said. “The belief is there though; we know what we’re trying to do and where the football club is going so we’ll be back.”

UNLUCKY MILLERS EMPTY-HANDED IN TURF MOOR DISAPPOINTMENT ROTHERHAM United returned over the Pennines empty-handed as a Sam Vokes’ penalty and Scott Arfield’s strike saw promotion-chasing Burnley earn the three points. Despite a resolute Millers display, Neil Warnock suffered his first defeat at the Rotherham helm as goals either side of the interval saw Sean Dyche’s men claim the Roses victory. Following their hard-fought draw with Birmingham City last time out, the Millers made three changes to their starting line-up for the visit to the highflying Clarets. Experienced defender Lloyd Doyley was thrown immediately into the fray at the heart of the Millers rearguard just 24 hours after putting pen-to-paper on a deal until the end of the season as Richard Wood missed out because of his red card against the Blues. Greg Halford was asked to deputise in the right-back slot following his impressive cameo last week as Frazer Richardson was switched to the left-hand side with Joe Mattock suspended. In just his second game in charge, Warnock gave Jonson ClarkeHarris a chance to impress upfront alongside Danny Ward as Matt Derbyshire had to settle for a substitutes berth. On the bench, veteran ‘keeper Paddy Kenny was reunited with former boss Warnock

after signing a short-term deal yesterday alongside Jerome Thomas, who had joined the Millers earlier in the week after impressing on trial. The home side had the first sight of goal when Kirk Broadfoot was penalised for climbing over Vokes and from the resultant free-kick, David Jones swung a tantalising centre which was smartly gathered by Lee Camp. Jones was in the thick of the early action as Rotherham failed to clear Matthew Lowton’s cross and the home midfielder tried his luck from distance but his effort failed to trouble the Rotherham stopper. In the Millers first foray of note, Halford launched a bullet throw into the home box which was only halfcleared into the path of Richie Smallwood, who looked to volley goalwards but the ball screwed harmlessly wide of the target. Just past the quarter hour, Broadfoot clashed with Michael Keane in the visitors box but the referee waved away home protests for a spot kick before Camp was on his toes to prevent Stephen Ward stabbing the ball home from point-blank range as the visitors failed to deal with Jones’ corner decisively. Moments later, Ben Mee clattered into the Rotherham ‘keeper in an aerial duel but the referee took no further action as Chris Burke

was cautioned for dissent in the aftermath of the incident. The game took a cruel twist for the Millers when Ward’s threaded ball saw George Boyd look to spin Doyley on the edge of the box and the ex-Watford defender clipped the heels of the winger just on the whitewash and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. From the resultant penalty, Vokes kept his nerve to wrongfoot Camp and slide the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The hosts were lifted by the strike and Stephen Ward’s inviting centre bizarrely missed the home runners but Lowton pounced on the loose ball to deliver a delicious cross which was inch-perfect for Andre Gray, who powered a point-blank header against the frame of the goal. With half time approaching, Camp’s punt upfield was cleverly knocked down by Clarke-Harris into the path of sub Grant Ward, who had just replaced his namesake Danny, and the Tottenham loanee unleashed a dipping half volley which whistled narrowly over the home bar. In the last play of the half, Stephen Ward attempted an audacious effort with the outside of his left-foot from distance but the ball narrowly cleared the visitors’ crossbar. Following the interval, former Manchester City star Joey Barton started to pull the

strings and it was his superb centre which saw Vokes get on the wrong side of the Millers defence but the Welsh international was unable to steer the ball goalwards with his outstretched leg. Moments later, Arfield drilled a low effort which was blocked en-route to goal by Doyley before Gray fluffed his lines by blazing the rebound over the bar before sub James Tarkowski’s ball into the channel released Gray, whose tantalising cross was inches away from Vokes at the far post. In a rare foray from the Millers, sub Andrew Shinnie’s pass paved the way for Newell to try his luck from distance but the ball screwed wide of the target before Gray was booked for dissent after a freekick award was given against him. Mee was the next to join him in the book for cynically hauling down Clarke-Harris as he looked to race clear and the Millers almost made them pay from the resultant attack when Broadfoot rose highest to meet Halford’s exocet throw but fortunately for the home side, Tom Heaton was well-stationed to gather on his own line. With quarter an hour to go, Arfield’s slide-rule ball put Gray in the clear and he rounded Camp to slip the ball into the empty net but his joy soon turned to despair, as the offside flag had been raised. Gray had two

chances to seal the deal when he latched onto Lowton’s long ball to turn Broadfoot but his tame effort from the edge of the box was straight down the throat of Camp before he had a footrace with the Rotherham stopper but Camp managed to get a timely knick to the ball to clear the danger. The Millers missed a gilt-edged chance to level matters when ClarkeHarris’ sweeping pass saw Newell edge infront of Lowton on the edge of the box to bare down on goal but with his weaker right-foot, he screwed

his effort wide of the target. With the game swinging end to end, Boyd got on the end of a flowing move from the home side to sting the palms of Camp before Vokes was crowded out with the goal at his mercy before Arfield had a shot bravely blocked by Richardson. With time running out for the Millers, Burnley sealed the points when Gray’s timely pass took two Rotherham defenders out of the game and Arfield kept his nerve to slide the ball past the advancing Camp to find the roof of the net.

WARNOCK REFLECTS Neil Warnock was delighted with his side’s application and believes an equaliser in the second half may have proven pivotal in the result on a wet afternoon at Turf Moor. “I can’t fault the lads and I thought I they were super today in everything that they did. They had a bit more quality than us but that’s where they are at the moment. That doesn’t mean that we couldn’t have got something out of the game because I think that was our best period when we had that chance and Joe is disappointed. We showed a lot of spirit today. Then the opportunity to get something out of the game came along and we missed it unfortunately. I don’t think Lee has had many

saves to make if I am honest. They’ve got quality and they’d be delighted to beat us 1-0, let alone 2-0.It was a first game for Greg Halford for a long time and Lloyd Doyley as well , so overall I thought they did ever so well and that includes young Wardy coming on. Lloyd is a good player and you know what you’re getting. He could have let it run through to the ‘keeper but that’s the decision he’s made. The way things were going today it was Sod’s Law that they were going to get a penalty. I think I’m going to enjoy the last 14 games because the lads are going to give me everything. When you’re a manager in the dugout like that you can’t ask for any more.””

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BATTLING BLADES BACK ON TRACK ADKINS LOOKS TO YOUTH Billy Sharp’s 15th goal of the season was the difference as United got the better of Port Vale at Bramall Lane on Saturday. Sharp netted early in the second-half in front of the Kop as the Blades came out on top in a hard fought clash against Rob Page’s Valiants.Boss Adkins made three changes from Tuesday’s loss at Bury, with Sharp, Flynn and Woolford all recalled to the starting XI. Calvert-Lewin and Campbell-Ryce dropped to the bench, where they were joined by the returning Cuvelier. There was a clear change in formation for United, who started with a 3-5-2 system. Basham, Edgar and McEveley were three centre-halves, with Brayford and Woolford playing in advanced wide roles. And it was the hosts who had the first shot in anger, with Neal saving from Adams who had

been freed by Edgar’s through ball. At the other end, Grant’s shot was deflected wide for a corner. United continued to be the ones forcing the issue, firstly, Duffy had to make a last ditch clearance from Brayford’s centre, then the Blades rightback fired over from a promising position. In the 25th minute, for the second time the Blades had the ball in the back of the net, but after Hammond had been adjudged to have fouled Neal, Sharp was denied by the linesman flag. As the game passed the half hour mark, Hammond became the first player into the book, for a challenge on McGivern. Hammond was then in the thick of the action again ten minutes later, only to see Dickinson head his goal bound header off the line, although again, the linesman had his flag raised. Following a quick break, Basham was booked for a

mistimed tackle on Kennedy. The last action of the first period saw Sharp fire wide under heavy pressure after Brayford and Flynn had seen efforts blocked. Within five minutes of the restart, the Blades went in front and it was that man SHARP who fired home on the turn in front of the Kop after McGivern failed to deal with Hammond’s cross from the right. One nearly became two moments later, Flynn released Adams, who held off McGivern before teeing up Sharp who shot inches wide. Vale made two changes in quick succession, prior to McGivern side footing over when well positioned on the edge of the area. The subsequent break in play saw Cuvelier introduced for his first appearance of the season, replacing Hammond. Substitute Kelly then went into the book for a nasty

lunge on Reed. The game was an open affair, United looked threatening on the break, whilst Vale had a couple of speculative efforts from long range, prior to Adams receiving a standing ovation as he was replaced by Done with ten minutes remaining. The final change came moments after with Coutts taking the place of the hard working Flynn. As the clock ticked down the visitors mounted a sustained period of pressure, but McGivern’s foul and subsequent booking for a foul on Sharp took a bit of the sting out of the game, as the fourth official signalled there would be a minimum of four added minutes. But despite Vale’s best efforts and a number of balls into box, the Blades deservedly returned to winning ways at Bramall Lane.

by Andy Smith After one win in six before the Doncaster Rovers game, Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins has injected youth into his side against Doncaster Rovers, Bury and Port Vale. Two wins in three shows how Adkins has been right to reenergise the squad with younger players - however, a miserable defeat by Bury shows there is still work to do on the Blades youngsters. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has featured in two of the last three, making his full league debut for the Blades during the win at Doncaster. The 18year-old, who has been involved in the Blades youth set up since 2005, played 86 minutes at the Keepmoat Stadium. Calvert-Lewin caught the eye of many Blade fans having impressed earlier in the season at Northampton Town, scoring 5 goals in 20 league games. Speaking via Twitter after the match at Doncaster, Calvert Lewin (@ CalvertLewin8) said: “(It’s) a very proud day for me today, (it’s) something I’ve worked and waited a long time for.” However, he was pulled off at half-time at Bury and did not feature on Saturday against Port Vale. Reed and Adams have both made their returns to the starting line-up after lengthy spells away from the

first XI. Doncaster was the first start for the pair since the Blades’ 4-2 home defeat by Shrewsbury Town on November 24th. Adams’ goal in the first half was enough for the Blades to come away with the win at their South Yorkshire rivals. Reed had an accomplished game against Port Vale, taking his chance in the centre of midfield to cover for Chris Basham who was covering at centre back for the injured Neill Collins. The inclusion of younger players is not something Adkins has favoured in recent months, choosing to go with experience in key positions, the ever-presence of Sharp, Woolford and Hammond keeping Calvert-Lewin, Adams and Reed out of the side. However, a lack of January signings may result in Adkins turning to youth for fresh enthusiasm as the Blades target the play-offs.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 BAD DAY IN PRESTON It was a day to forget for the Owls, who also lost key forward Fernando Forestieiri to a red card midway through the second half. The Argentine picked up a second yellow card that left Wednesday with an uphill battle that went in Preston’s favour when Joe Garner scored the only goal of an entertaining game 17 minutes from the end. But the afternoon began well enough for the Owls, who dominated the early exchanges but it was the home side that carved the first opportunity. Greg Cunningham darted down the left flank and delivered a cutting ball that found Calum Woods, who shot back across Keiren Westwood and wide. Still Wednesday enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but again the hosts went close, this time through Adam Reach firing from distance and the ball whistled inches past the post. Joe Garner then forced Westwood into a diving save as Preston began to impose themselves on an end to end contest. Skipper Tom Clarke spurned the

best chance of the first half, lashing wide from six yards after finding space in the box from a Preston set piece. For the Owls, the first 45 minutes spawned plenty of enterprising football but just one half chance, with Tom Lees a whisker away from connecting to a Barry Bannan free kick. Wednesday started the second half with a spring in their step and Daniel Pudil smashed a half volley over the bar on the hour following a considered spell of pressure. But the game was turned on its head in a ten-minute second half spell. First, Forestieri handled an Atdhe Nuhiu cross and saw a first half yellow upgraded to red before Preston broke the deadlock on 73 minutes. Woods sent a wicked cross to the far post and Garner climbed to power an unstoppable header past Westwood that condemned the Owls to their first reverse since Middlesbrough in late December.

CARLOS EXPECTS POSITIVE REACTION Carlos Carvalhal said his side win and lose as a team after the Owls’ 1-0 defeat against Preston at Deepdale. Joe Garner scored the winning goal for the Lilywhites after Fernando Forestieri was sent off for two bookable offences. The head coach said: “Overall the game was very even, very balanced and both teams had chances to win. After the red card, we were unbalanced for a few moments and this is when we conceded the goal. I thought the second yellow card was correct but I do not agree with the first one as to me when I saw it, I did not think it was a foul. But I am disappointed by the result, not by the way our team played, they showed a lot of fight until the end of the match to try and get the points for us. Whatever the result we are a team, if we win we are a team,

and today we lose as a team.” Nearly 6,000 Wednesdayites travelled to Preston and Carvalhal said: “I would like to thank the fans who travelled with us today. They supported us all the way through the game and were fantastic.” He went on to say that the sign of a strong team is the speed of their reaction to a setback. After suffering the first

defeat of 2016, the head coach is confident of a positive reaction at Hillsborough on Tuesday. Wednesday host Queens Park Rangers in midweek and Carlos has high expectations, as he explained: “Everybody has problems in their life and it is usually the people who react more fast that are the champions. They are the people who have

this fast reaction in their blood. There are teams that need a long time to recover. But in the past, we have shown that all the times we have a problem, our group are fantastic and have a good and strong reaction.” The Owls are on a 13-game league run without defeat at Hillsborough and 15 in all competitions.

OWLS STARS BACK SPORT RELIEF

Sheffield Wednesday players Jack Hunt, Fernando Forestieri and Tom Lees have shown their support for national campaign, Sport Relief 2016 and are encouraging Owls fans to take part. Sheffield has been selected as one of the six cities across the UK to host the ‘Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Flagship Games’. Money raised from Sport Relief will help disadvantaged people living in incredibly tough conditions across the UK and in the world’s poorest communities. Owls defender Lees said: “It’s great to support

Sport Relief as it’s a fun way to raise money across the country. We want to encourage supporters to sign up, get involved and help to increase funds for the good cause.” The games take place on Sunday 20 March in Sheffield
