Mother’s Day Mother’s Day Around the World It doesn’t matter how you say it, the sentiment is the same: Happy Mother’s Day, Mum. We love you. Thank you. You are the centre of our family and for that, we are grateful. Here in the UK, Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This tradition started back in the 16th century when poor children were given a day off work to go home and honour the Virgin Mary at their “mother church”. The children would often pick flowers to give to their mothers and bake special cakes called Mothering Cakes or Simnel Cakes. Today we celebrate by giving our mothers presents and cards and then by celebrating the women in our lives with the wider family — normally over a big meal. If you’re wondering how to celebrate, and are struggling with Mother’s Day ideas, why not find inspiration from the many ways families honour mothers around the world? Here are fun Mother’s Day traditions in 7 other countries:

1. USA The USA is where the modern Mother’s Day as we know it started. Although many forms of Mother’s day existed before – typically with religious roots – Mother’s day is now considered a secular day of celebration, during which mother’s are showered with gifts and cards. The day was first conceived at the beginning of the 20th century when a woman called Ann Reeves Jarvis’s mother died. She wanted to have a national day for people to honour the sacrifices mothers make for their children.

2. France Fête des mères takes place on the last Sunday of May, but is moved to the first Sunday of June if Pentecost falls then. The day of celebration was first declared by Napoleon, who wanted to reward mothers of large families. This tradition was revitalised during the First World War, when mothers of four or five children were given medals. The modern fête des mères was officially founded in

War, Mother’s Day traditions took on political significance: it was the day to acknowledge women for producing children for the Vaterland (Fatherland). Medals were awarded in gold, silver or bronze, based upon how many children were in the 3. India In culturally diverse India, household. Chrysanthemums are also a very popular floral choice, originally due to a marketing gimmick playing on the fact they end with ‘mum’. Aunts and grandmothers are also acknowledged with gifts. In Australia, lots of service events are held around the holiday, with many organisations holding events to help raise money for women’s causes

7. Ethiopia Here, Mother’s Day is celebrated at the end of the rainy season, as part of the three-day Antrosht festival, dedicated to mums. When the weather clears up and the skies empty of rain, family members come home to celebrate with a large feast. Daughters traditionally bring vegetables, butter, spices and cheese, while the sons bring meat of various types, including lamb or bull. These will be included in a traditional hash recipe. Singing and dancing is shared by all family members

REACH FOR THE STARS IN FARGATE Thrill-seekers will soon be able to take in the heights of Sheffield when the Sheffield Starflyer, the UK’s largest transportable attraction standing at a thrilling 220ft tall, is installed in the heart of the city next month. The ride will sit at the top of Fargate and operate from 18 March to 5 June, at the site of former attraction the Wheel of Sheffield, which saw thousands of people taking in the views of the city. Following an application for planning permission by Mellors Group, the request was approved at today’s Planning & Highways Committee meeting. Councillor Leigh Bramall, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Development at Sheffield City Council said: “This is a fantastic attraction which will bring many visitors to the city centre. The location is perfect for shoppers and those enjoying an evening out, plus families using other city centre leisure facilities like the Central Library or theatres – it will be a thrilling experience with spectacular city centre views day and night. “The Sheffield Starflyer will make a valuable contribution to the vitality of our city centre. Working alongside the city centre BID this is one of many events

and attractions planned to make our city centre a busier and vibrant place to visit. I hope that all those who dare, will take this opportunity to look on Sheffield from a whole new angle.” The ride will be available for 3 months, from 18 March to 5 June and open between 10am to 10pm. Riders must be above 1.2m in height and at least 6 years old and children under 1.4m tall and age 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Edward Mellors, Director of Mellors Group said “We are pleased to be bringing one of our major attractions to the city of Sheffield and look forward to working with Sheffield Council on this project which is fully funded by the Mellors Group. In the Sheffield Starflyer, we have an attraction that offers not only white knuckle excitement but is also a brand new icon of the Sheffield skyline.” A dedicated website will be available from 24 February at www. sheffieldstarflyer.co.uk plus a Facebook page www.facebook.com/sheffieldstarflyer where you can find more information and share your experience of the city from above.

TAXI DRIVERS SHEFFIELD 50+ MEETING PROTECT COMMUNITIES Taxi drivers in Sheffield will be equipped to support vulnerable passengers following the launch of a new course that helps them recognise when passengers need extra help, or when they see suspicious behaviour. The Safeguarding Vulnerable Passengers course was officially introduced this week at The Sheffield College. It has been developed over the years to help taxi drivers become the eyes and ears of the community, so they’re better able to identify and report situations where a customer appears vulnerable. This includes passengers who may be suffering financial exploitation, those who have communication difficulties, or people used in child sexual exploitation or human trafficking. Sheffield has led the way in developing innovative approaches to safeguarding over the years and has received national recognition for this and a number of awards along the way. This course was piloted back in 2012 but is now widely available. Other authorities and national groups are adopting the approach. The feedback so far has revealed an increase in the number of taxi drivers reporting their concern.

The next Sheffield 50+ members’ meeting is on Thursday 3rd March at 1.15pm in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall. The speaker is Richard Godley on the Sheffield Blitz project.

Whatever your experience and skills and whatever time you can spare, Sheffield 50+ needs you!

ACTIVITY SHEFFIELD CLOSING IN MARCH

Sheffield City Council have announced the closure of Activity Sheffield, a Council spokesman said: “We continue to face significant financial challenges as the Government further reduces its grant to us. Extremely difficult decisions have had to be made over the past 5 years about services that the people of Sheffield care so much about.” Activity Sheffield is extremely disappointed that as a consequence of these cuts they will no longer be in a position to deliver sessions beyond 18 March 2016. Unfortunately, the service faces a significant reduction in staff and will operate with only a small team of workers who will in future support groups to raise funds and organise their own activities. This is work that Activity Sheffield has done successfully in recent years – but from April 1 this will be the primary focus of their work. These proposals were reluctantly agreed by the Council Cabinet on February 17th and will go to Full Council for final approval on March 4th. This means that for the people we work with, if these proposals are approved in early March, Activity Sheffield will not be in a position to deliver any sessions beyond 18 March 2016 and therefore sessions will stop. Activity Sheffield want to offer advice on what to do next to keep up community activities. To find out more: Telephone 0114 2734266 Email activity.sheffield@sheffield.gov.uk

Scientific Fact: Exposure to far infrared rays are the key to preventing metastatic cancer and strengthening immunity.

Biomats are a perfect way to fight off disease. The Biomat heats and activates the body from the inside out. The same infrared rays you would receive from the sun are projected deep into your body. As your body temperature rises, the biomat induces a false fever that then stimulates your immune system. CAMRA’S PUB WALKS MARCHES ON TO YORKSHIRE Pub and beer-loving walkers in Yorkshire can now be helped on their way with a new guide, Yorkshire Pub Walks, published by The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). It is the first book in CAMRA’s popular series to be devoted to a single county and it also comes in a brand new eye-catching design for this series of books. Published on the 14th March, this is the sixth book in the Pub Walks series, produced by the

publishing arm of CAMRA, with all the books written by Bob Steel. Simon Hall, Head of Publishing at CAMRA, said: ‘We’re delighted with this fresh, modern design for the series which has already sold more than 50,000 copies. The books help to send a positive message about combining great pubs with healthy exercise and the exploration of Britain’s countryside and towns.’ The book features urban and rural locations, as well as exploring Yorkshire’s renowned national parks, and offers a vibrant and incisive insight into the culture and heritage of the county. It also contains information on local transport and accommodation. The 25 walks are divided into North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and City Walks sections which include: Settle and Upper Ribblesdale; Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay; Brontë country: Haworth and Ponden; Sheffield: Kelham Island and the ‘valley of beer’ and Hull’s old town: a fishy trail. The book priced at £9.99 will be available from www.camra.org.uk/books

CAMRA’s Yorkshire Pub Walks Author Bob Steel

The main book launch will take place at two events in March. Bob Steel will be signing books at the Leeds Beer Festival on Thursday 17th March, Noon to 1:30pm (www.leedsbeerfestival.co.uk) and The Talbot in Settle from 4pm (www. talbotsettle.co.uk).

THE X-FACTOR RETURNS TO MEADOWHALL

COMPETITION

Meadowhall is going centre stage in the X-Factor auditions for a third year running as the hit TV talent show heads to Sheffield on Monday March 7. The nationwide search for the next chart topping superstar will begin in earnest up and down the country and South Yorkshire has enjoyed its fair share of X-Factor success with the likes of Sam Bailey and Lucy Spraggan going all the way to the live finals and beyond! The auditions will take place Monday March 7, between 1pm-6pm, where budding musicians and singers can come on down to Meadowhall and take part in what could be a life-changing audition. Meadowhall Centre Director Darren Pearce said: “We have enjoyed some real success stories over the years and we hope this season will be no different. It would be great to see a South Yorkshire star start their journey at Meadowhall and then go all the way to the live shows.

The lovely people at CAMRA have given us two copies of ‘CAMRA’s Yorkshire Pub Walks’ to give away to lucky readers. All you have to do is answer the following question and send your entry with a daytime contact number to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk or 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before Friday 18th March. Which Sheffield pub won ‘CAMRA Yorkshire Pub of the Year 2015’?

Distance Inbetween is The Coral’s first album of original material since 2010’s Butterfly House, a gap punctuated by last year’s surprise release of their lost album, The Curse of Love. Since their debut EP release in 2001 the band have sold over a million UK albums, with five reaching the Top 10 including 2003’s charttopping Magic and Medicine. Their eight Top 40 singles include Dreaming Of You, In The Morning, Pass It On, and Don’t Think You’re The First. Recorded at Liverpool’s Parr Street Studio with co-producer Richard Turvey, Distance Inbetween was recorded live and mostly in just one take. The seams of each of the album’s 12-tracks are purposely rough-hewn and pave the way for a new visceral sound from a totally reenergised band. "Before we started making the album we had discussed that we wanted it to be more

minimal and rhythmical,” explains James Skelly (vocals, guitars). “We thought ‘if you've got a rhythm section that’s been playing together for almost twenty years, why not make that the centre of the songs?’" On the album James, Ian Skelly (drums/ percussion/vocals), Nick Power (keyboard/ vocals), and Paul Duffy (bass/keyboards/ vocals) are joined by Coral newbie, guitarist Paul Molloy, formerly of The Zutons. “Paul was playing with Ian in their band, Serpent Power, and we'd all been mates with him for years,” says James. “We already had a couple of tunes recorded and Ian suggested Paul add some guitar. His parts really enhanced the tracks; he understood where he needed to leave space. From that point we didn't look back. We had a full line-up and were confident we could make an album that would stand next to the others." On Distance Inbetween listeners are invited into The Coral’s world of Richard Yates’ books, Alan Moore comics, 1980's toys, the sound of krautrock compilations and Muddy Waters’ Electric Mud, and Gregory Crewdson’s darkly beautiful photography. The album is dedicated to Alan Wills, The Coral’s early mentor and Deltasonic label boss who tragically lost his life in 2014. TRAMLINES HEADLINERS CELEBRATE BRITS SUCCESS Preview: Catfish And The Bottlemen, Tramlines Festival, 22-24th July 2016 By Kt Evans

What a phenomenal year 2016 has been for Catfish And The Bottlemen so far. Having been announced as one of the headliners at this year’s Tramlines Festival 2016, the four piece indie rock group also scooped the BRIT Award for Best UK Breakthrough Act. Flying high on the successful of 2015, we challenge you not to get ridiculously excited surrounding their appearance in The Steel City. So…what do we already know about Catfish And The Bottlemen? Forming in 2007 in North Wales, the group have reached stratospheric heights by performing in the UK, Europe, Australia and North America, alongside grabbing killer slots on the likes of Glastonbury Festival, Leeds and Reading, T In The Park and Latitude. In 2014, the group released their gigantic debut album, “The Balcony” which charted at number ten in the UK album charts. This has since been certified Gold 3ith XZ Noise Publication calling the album “an incredibly polished debut.” “Kathleen” and “Cocoon” from the album achieved top twenty status in the US Alt Rock chart

and remains as two of their most successful singles to date. In December 2014, the group were awarded the “BBC Introducing Award” at the very first BBC Music Awards ceremony which aired live on BBC1. They spectacularly performed their single “Kathleen” at the awards, which undeniably safeguarded the band as a house hold name. With further single “Homesick” named as Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record In The World on Radio 1, the group have since performed on US Chat Show “The Late Night Show With David Letterman” which receives millions of viewers every week. Catfish And The Bottlemen are currently in the studio polishing off their second album, with single “Soundcheck” once again appearing in the UK singles charts in early 2016. Although not much has been given away surrounding the release of their upcoming record, if “Balcony” is anything to go by, we are sure as hell in for a mighty treat. Catfish And The Bottlemen are to perform at this years Tramlines Festival which takes place from 22nd – 24th July. Tickets are on sale now and are priced from £42.00. Please see the website www.tramlines.org.uk for full details.

EDDI READER MARKS 30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH SHEFFIELD SHOW Preview: Eddi Reader, 27/03/16, Sheffield City Hall By Kt Evans

As part of her extensive UK live tour, singer songwriter Eddi Reader is to grace the Steel City’s Memorial Hall on 27th March 2016. With high praise from international press and radio stations alike, including Jules Holland who said “Eddi Reader is one of my favourite singers of all time,” this tour ties in with the release of her most recent compilation record, “The Best Of,” which marks the stars staggering thirty years in the industry. Scottish singer songwriter Eddi Reader has had an absolutely remarkable career, which kicked off back in the late 1980s. Former vocalist in soft rock group Fairground Attraction between 1987 and 1990, the Scottish star has won three BRIT awards alongside an MBE to celebrate her extensive contribution to the arts. Let us not forget to also mention that Reader has also released twelve studio albums, topping the charts throughout the British Isles with her beautiful melodies and touchingly personal song lyrics.

11th March 2016 will see Eddi Reader release her brand new compilation album which draws together some of her most celebrated tracks. With The Sunday Times Newspaper reviewing the album as “Just perfect…she gets every song just right,” it simply is no wonder that Acoustic Magazine named Reader “One of the greatest voices in British music.” With a huge thirty song track list, to include “Perfect,” “Dear John” and “Love Is The Way,” this album shines a light on the phenomenal career of the Scottish songstress. Eddi Reader is to hit the road throughout the UK to bring her beautiful live performance to the masses. She will be visiting Leeds, Southport, Newbury, Gateshead and Birmingham, with tickets expects to be snapped up pronto. She is to perform at Sheffield’s City Hall on 27th March 2016.The concert will take place in the Memorial Hall, the 500 capacity auditorium. Tickets are on sale now, priced at £24.75. Please see the website www.sheffieldboxoffice.com for full details including opening times, box office fees and contact details.

AA URGES CHANCELLOR TO KEEP HIS HANDS OFF IPT AND FUEL DUTY The AA has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer urging him to resist hitting motorists and businesses again in the forthcoming budget. Edmund King OBE, AA president, says he is concerned that the Chancellor may consider Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) and car fuel duty hikes to be a ‘quick win’ to increase revenues. He points out that the cost imposed by the 58% increase in Insurance Premium Tax (IPT), which came into effect in November 2015, added up to £18 to the average quoted premium for a car insurance policy. “It contributed to the biggest quarterly leap in in the typical quote for car cover since 2010 (10.4%), coming as it did at a time when car insurance premiums had started to rise thanks to growing claims costs associated with fraud and whiplash injury. “In an AA-Populus poll in July 2015, only 11% of almost 30,000 respondents thought the increase was justified while 87% considered an increase in IPT would encourage more uninsured driving.” Similarly, the increase in IPT also affects the cost of roadside assistance and has landed a £12m ad-

ditional cost on the AA’s business. The same poll showed that 72% of AA members were not aware that their roadside assistance cost included IPT. Mr King points out: “Any additional increase in IPT would simply discourage motorists from taking out any roadside assistance cover, exposing them to potentially crippling costs for emergency recovery in the event of a breakdown. The IPT hike from the last budget is a double-whammy that only affects drivers as it hits insurance and roadside assistance costs, particularly hurting those on low incomes; and young drivers, who pay the highest premiums.” Mr King also says that although the cost of fuel has fallen over recent months, it remains a significant part of a driver’s weekly spend. “The country is emerging from recession and there is greater confidence among British families. Not only do hard working families rely on low fuel costs for their day-to-day driving but industry is also dependent on motor fuel for deliveries and mobility of their workers. “The AA doesn’t expect low fuel prices to endure given the commodity markets are looking to lift the price of oil. “We welcome the Government strategy to shield

Contractors for Highways England will be resurfacing 8 miles of the northbound carriageway on the A1(M) between Blyth and Tickhill and another 8 miles on the northbound A1 between Barnsdale and Darrington – the equivalent of the area covered by 26 football pitches. As part of the two schemes, 2,500 reflective road studs will be replaced and road markings will be repainted. The work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am, starting on Monday 29 February with the Blyth to Tickhill work. This is expected to be completed before work starts between Barnsdale and Darrington on Monday 8 March. These dates are subject to reasonable weather conditions. During the closures general maintenance work, such as gully cleaning and litter picking, will also take place. Highways England project manager Martin

Barnes said: “It’s essential that this work takes place so that drivers can benefit from smoother and safer journeys, and a well-maintained road network. “We’ll be resurfacing an area of road equivalent to 26 football pitches as well as replacing thousands of reflective road studs, so drivers really will notice the difference when the work is completed. “We’re carrying out the improvement work overnight, when the road is at its quietest, to avoid causing disruption to traffic during the day.” Drivers will be able to follow clearly signed diversion routes. For the A1(M) closure, drivers will be diverted along the A614, the A638 and the A18, before joining the M18 at junction 3 and then getting back onto the A1(M). For the A1 closure, drivers will be diverted along the A620, the A628 and the A645 and back on at junctions 32a of the A1(M). The scheme is due to be completed at the end of March.

motorists from duty rises in the past because of previous fuel price volatility. “But we urge the Chancellor not to use low fuel prices as an excuse to increase fuel duty now.” A separate AA-Populus study completed on 23 February showed that only 12% of members agreed that fuel duty should be increased to help public finances.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

A nice trip out to a local fishery this week, one of my favourite venues, set in the heart of rolling Cheshire countryside in search of carp… I like Gawsworth Fisheries, it’s a peaceful patch, with a number of pools, and plenty of species to fish for, so it offers something for everyone. I particularly enjoy Wood Pool, home to lovely big carp and catfish, so I headed there to see what I could find. On arrival, I’d been beaten to the car park by a pair of anglers, so I pulled and asked where they intended to fish before I unloaded and selected my peg. They seemed somewhat surprised by my inquiry, and once I’d explained that I’d asked purely out of courtesy as they had arrived first, and I didn’t want to encroach on their fishing, they seemed even more surprised! Have good manners between anglers become a thing of the past? I hope not… Pleasantries aside, I wandered off the short distance to my preferred spot; a well-trodden peg giving access to island margins, and an open water spot which often holds a fish or two due to a shallow indentation in the lake bed. It was cold, bright, and although the northerly wind didn’t fill me with confidence, but I had a cunning plan. The last time I visited, I put a lot of bait in, and had a good day; perhaps the same tactics would work again? I’m aware that over the weekend, a lot of fodder goes in, especially near this spot, but I’d raided the freezer, and opted to Spomb three pints of maggots, a kilo of corn, and two kilos of the excellent Mainline Hybrid baits into a small area. The hope was that the maggots would attract the smaller fish, and the carp would eventually sniff a meal and come to investigate. I use the Spomb exclusively for my long range baiting, I’ve used it for a couple of years, and know I get all my bait on the spot; I’m amazed by anglers who use a normal spod, and spread bait all the place as it spills out of the back, but still tell me they have a tight spread. Impossible! With all of my offerings accurately deposited, I used Mainline Baits Essential IB wafters, tied with bait floss to Vardis Turn Down hooks (check them out at www.vardistackle.co.uk) and fairly short Vardis

hooklinks, then lobbed one rig smack onto the baited patch, and the other just on the edge of the freebies…perfect! All I had to do was wait… I had a new Sonik Sports specialist rod to play with too, a 1.75lb test curve, tri-tip S3 rod which also comes with an Avon style tip, rendering it a tool to be used almost anywhere. I especially appreciate an all-white tip, I think it makes it much easier to see in any conditions, and after filling a feeder, it started to tremble almost immediately as fish investigated the groundbait; a few seconds later, the rod indicated a ‘proper’ bite, and the first fish of the day was slowly pulled towards the net. A nice bream of around 3lb was first in, quickly followed by a good few more, then a few roach, then more bream; this was turning out to be a good day! I kept my eye on other anglers who sat behind silent alarms, watched as an odd bream took a fancy to boilie baits, but in truth, I was too busy to be nosy. As the sun rose high in the sky, sport slowed a little, and tactics had to change. Fish were nipping at baits, so a small method feeder was loaded, and afterwards, the bites became much more positive as my tally climbed further; I could do no wrong! Throughout the day, action was fairly consistent, a top of bait usually enough to encourage further fish, but unfortunately, the carp bobbins remained motionless. I hadn’t seen a carp all day, I don’t think other anglers had either, so as thoughts moved to packing away, I was agreeably pleased to see the bobbin lift an inch, then shoot up towards the blank as a carp hit the bait. As you may expect in winter, the fight wasn’t particularly arduous, it fact I did think it was perhaps a large bream of the other end, but then an angry looking erect dorsal fin betrayed a low double common which slid into the net. A quick photograph, and my winter prize was returned safely to the depths. All in all, a very good day. A cracking haul of bream and quality roach, a bonus carp, and I’d been able to take lots of images for future work; it didn’t rain, the sun was warm, and the fish were biting…what more can you ask for?

Saturday brought cold but dry weather, creating perfect conditions for a winter’s day of football. There was a busy league fixture list, complimented with the U21 Cup Quarter-Finals and a couple of outstanding League Cup 3rd Round ties. U21 Cup Quarter-Finals Handsworth Parramore U21 beat Bawtry Town U21 4-3 on penalties in a topsy-turvy tie at Oliver’s Mount. The score was 3-3 after 90 minutes and extra-time saw the score extended to 4-4, before Handsworth put the tie to bed on penalties. Stocksbridge Park U21 were 10-1 winners over Millmoor Juniors U21 at the Look Local stadium. Stocksbridge have been pretty formidable this season, winning all of their league and U21 Cup games so far. Mid-table Wombwell Main U21 booked their place in the Semi-Finals with a 5-3 victory over South Kirkby Colliery U21 at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium. League Cup 3rd Round Joe Dungworth scored an amazing six goals to help Swinton Athletic beat Bawtry Town U21 7-0 at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Dan Morton was also on target for the hosts. Premier League Oughtibridge WMFC were made to work hard to avoid a shock against Millmoor Juniors Reserves, who are currently at the bottom of the First Division. Oughtibridge took the tie 4-3.

Premier Division Third placed Swallownest FC winless run was extended to five games, as they fell to a 3-1 defeat away against Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. The win leaves Stocksbridge into fourth position, just four points behind Swallownest. Bottom side Wickersley FC ended a run of 11 consecutive league losses, with a thrilling 5-4 win at home against Handsworth Parramore U21. James Claxton starred for Wickersley, putting a brace to his name. Carey Welford scored four goals to inspire North Gawber Colliery to an emphatic 7-0 home win over Millmoor Juniors. Luke Exley, Carl Woodhead and Luke Marsden were also on target for the mid-table side. Jubilee Sports were 2-1 winners against Athersley Recreation Reserves at Sheerien Park. Jubilee have lost only once in six league games in 2016. WARNOCK HAILS MILLERS TEAM AFTER FIRST WIN Rotherham United manager Neil Warnock hailed his side’s heroic performance which saw him register his first win in the Millers hotseat as they saw off Brentford with a 2-1 victory at AESSEAL New York Stadium. Goals from Matt Derbyshire and Danny Ward, either side of an Alan Judge strike, secured the hosts three points at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Warnock paid tribute to his side’s effort and determination in a battling display in South Yorkshire and believes they were good value for their win against Dean Smith’s Brentford. “I thought the lads typified what I wanted of them. I said to the lads that they need to enjoy this challenge,” Warnock enthused after the game. “We deserved to win today. The amount of effort we put in in the first half, it made it difficult for me, too have dominated the way we did and to have come in at half time at 1-1. “The crowd must have gone home very happy, there was goal-mouth scrambles, crosses, shots, blocks, it is just like old times for me now – and I’m still really enjoying it.” Rotherham were dealt a blow after a solid first half performance

when Lee Frecklington was adjudjed to have fouled Sergi Canos in the area and despite the best efforts of Lee Camp who stopped the initial spot-kick, the Irish midfielder made no mistake with the follow up. Warnock insisted his side were unfortunate to go in level at the break and admitted he had to urge his side to move on quickly at the interval. “The lads were a bit flat because of the penalty, and I said to them we have to forget that, because everything has gone against us recently” Warnock continued. “We have to make our own luck, and I think we did second half.” The Millers reduced the gap between themselves and MK Dons to just three points following their victory over the Bees and Warnock is adamant that the Millers can climb out of the Sky Bet Championship drop zone. “The game is all about winning, yes, we are still adrift and we do have tough games to come but they are a great bunch of lads, and I am genuinely enjoying it and the fans have made me feel really welcome. “I want to get this place buzzing again, and it is, the lads are buzzing and so are the fans now –

I am sure they’re looking forward to the games.” “We are at Sheffield Wednesday next week, and I’m really looking forward to that one, and they’re playing well this year – but we can go there and give them a game.” Energetic midfielder Lee Frecklington made his return from injury against Brentford replacing Paul Green in the Millers’ engine room and turned in a performance which left his manager delighted with his contribution. Despite initially being a doubt for the clash, with his return looking

33

unlikely mid-week, he turned in a Man of the Match performance to further endear himself to the Rotherham United faithful. “I had a word with Frecklington and told him that I need him, but not to play if he got injured. I asked for an hour and I got 80 minutes from him. In that time he showed me what a good player he is,” Warnock beamed. “The physio told me Lee Frecklington would be fit 10 days from now and I got an hour out of Leon Best and Jerome Thomas, which is what I asked of them.”

ROVERS DOMINATION, THEY ARE DENIED ALL THREE GAFFER FERGUSON DESPITE POINTS THANKS TO JORDAN ARCHER HEROICS LATE ON HAPPY WITH HARD FOUGHT MILLWALL POINT Gaffer happy to stop rot with hard fought point against Lions. Darren Ferguson was pleased with how his Doncaster players reacted in the face of going a goal down against high flying Millwall to rescue a point and labelled them “brave”. Steve Morison’s early opener put Rovers on the back foot for the fifth straight game however defeat was avoided by Richard Chaplow’s goal just before half time. “Given the start we’d had against a team that’s won their last five away games, very difficult to break down – especially when they go ahead – then credit to my players, they stuck to the game plan,” said Ferguson. “It’s fine margins again but in terms of how I want my players they were brave today and we knew that we had to move the ball quickly against a big, physical team in Millwall. “Considering the start we had when we went 1-0 and after

Millwall player Richard Chaplow equalised. After a wonderful run from Andy Williams, the striker weaved his way into the box before playing a square ball for Chaplow to bravely get on the end of and smash home. The Rovers goalscorer had a chance to get his second just before half time. Driving into the box he took a shot from 12 yards but Jordan Archer made an excellent save low to his left. Rovers finished the half on a high and went in deservedly level at half time. It was a lively start to the second half as both teams looked up for it. Steve Morison had the easiest of chances to put the visitors ahead as a ball was played across the box. Fizzing past Stuckmann, it just needed a touch but Morison somehow missed from three yards. Darren Ferguson introduced Lynden Gooch to the game as Rovers really started to take control on the ball. The Sunderland loanee almost made an instant impact as Mitchell Lund’s flick on fell to him in the 6 yard box. With his back to goal he headed towards the far post but his effort was inches wide. Nathan Tyson caused a number of problems for the Millwall

back line. Robbing the defender of the ball he twisted and turned on the edge of the box before getting a shot off but Archer again was there to make the save. Tyson went agonisingly close again as we approached 90 minutes. After a lovely one-two with Chaplow the striker was set free into the box. Trying to poke the ball past Archer with the outside of his boot, somehow the Millwall keeper

made a great save with his legs. As the home side dominated the game it looked as though they would get the winner they deserved. More brilliant work from Tyson set Conor Grant through on goal. With an option to square the ball or go for goal he looked to place it past Archer at the near post but again Millwall man made an excellent save to keep the scores level.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 DEFENDER SIGNS Nigel Adkins has strengthened his squad with the loan signing of an experienced Championship defender. The Blades have completed a deal to bring Middlesbrough’s Alex Baptiste to Bramall Lane on a 93day emergency loan and the versatile operator is eligible for Tuesday night’s clash against Burton Albion. The 30-year-old joined Boro in the summer of 2015 from Bolton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee, having impressed whilst on-loan at Blackburn Rovers during the 201415 campaign. But 20 minutes into his Middlesbrough debut he suffered a double leg fracture in a pre-season friendly against York City and has subsequently not featured for the Championship promotion-chasers this season.

Having played over 150 times for Mansfield Town, Baptiste joined Blackpool in 2008 and was part of the Tangerines squad that won promotion to the Premiership under Ian Holloway. He enjoyed a season in the top-flight with Blackpool, making over 170 appearances at Bloomfield Road in total and has proved himself at Championship level for a number of years since. Blades chief Nigel Adkins told www.sufc. co.uk on Tuesday: “We are delighted to be able to bring Alex in. He’s a vastly experienced performer who can operate in a number of positions. Following an injury, he is now fit and raring to go and will make a valuable contribution in the remaining months of the season.”

U21’S EXTEND WINNING RUN United’s U21s are now 14 games unbeaten in the Professional Development League, following a comfortable 2-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra on Monday afternoon. Diego De Girolamo scored in the first-half, before Jake Wright’s penalty in the second period made sure of all three points at the Look Local Stadium, home of Stocksbridge Park Steels, to secure a third win on the spin. The Blades dominated the opening exchanges and Wright had a number of clear cut chances in the first-half hour, whilst at the other end, Ramsdale was rarely tested although commanded his box confidently. The hosts made their pressure count in the 33rd minute as DE GIROLAMO opened the scored after being teed up by Wright following Brooks’s impressive

diagonal ball. And the Blades doubled their advantage in the second period when WRIGHT converted from the penalty spot after his goal bound effort was handled by a Alex defender. In truth the winning margin could have been far greater, but Coach Travis Binnion was delighted to see his young side continue their excellent form and in the process move to the top of Professional Development League Two by two points. He remarked: “The run keeps going and the players deserve all the credit. We have been a young side now for a number of weeks, but still we have consistently won our games against some decent opposition, including Championship sides. “This was a deserved win, Crewe were in the game and looked a threat from set-pieces and on the counter attack, but really we could have won the game by a few more.”

ADKINS TARGETS LOAN SIGNINGS By Andrew Smith

Nigel Adkins reassured Sheffield United fans that every attempt was being made to secure loan signings. Following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Rochdale, Adkins spoke with BBC Radio Sheffield regarding loan signings, he said: “Definitely, before the deadline.” Adkins has until 5pm on March 24th to secure any emergency loan deals. After multiple reported bids in January, it looks as though Adkins will have to admit defeat in his pursuit of Dan Burn, with a number of media outlets reporting that Stoke City are interested in the 23 year-old defender. With the Blades suffering from a leaky defence at times this season, it is expected that Adkins will look to strengthen in this area. Football League clubs can sign players for up to 93 days during the emergency loan window. It is no surprise that Adkins has waited up until now to state real intent to get loan signings in. Players signed from today will have loan periods that carry them over

to the League One Play-Off final, on May 29th. With the Blades still targeting a top six spot, it is important to have any potential loan players available for a playoff campaign. The Blades still have plenty to do if they are to reach the top six. After Saturday’s game, Adkins’ side lay 10th in the table, four points off 6th placed Coventry, who have a game in hand. United’s push for the play-offs will only be enhanced by the return of Florent Cuvelier and Stefan Scougall, both return to the fold after long injury lay offs.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 CARLOS TAKES POSITIVES FROM HULL DRAW Following the Owls’ goalless draw with Hull City on Friday evening at The KC Stadium, Carlos Carvalhal believes there are plenty of positives to take. Against the Sky Bet Championship leaders, Wednesday more than stood up to the test and left East Yorkshire with a merited point. The feeling post-match was that it was a good point gained for the Owls and the head coach said: “It was a good point absolutely, we play

against probably the strongest team in the competition. “They have good organisation, good coach, good players but I think we showed we are a strong team also. “We show our quality, we show our organisation, we moved some players because we needed to. “In the defence, we moved three but they were fantastic. “In the first half I thought we were more dangerous than Hull and were all the time dangerous.” The game and point at The KC was marred by the stoppage time dismissal of Fernando Forestieri and Carlos continued: “The bad part is that we now lose Fernando for two games but the good part is we win a point, we show we are a strong team and we have fantastic support because our fans again were absolutely amazing.”

LUCAS JOAO NAMED IN CAPITAL ONE CUP XI Wednesday striker Lucas Joao has been named in the Capital One Cup Team of the Tournament for 2015/16. The 22-year-old struck twice in the competition as the Owls made it to the quarter final stage. Joao opened his account for the season in the 4-1 home League Cup victory over Mansfield but it was the memorable night at Hillsborough against Arsenal where the striker’s performance earned the plaudits. Wednesday stunned the Gunners in S6 with Ross Wallace, Joao and Sam Hutchinson scoring the goals in the 3-0 win. The Portuguese international has scored eight goals for the Owls this term with the latest coming in Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Brentford earlier this month.

The Owls defeated Mansfield, Oxford, Newcastle and Arsenal before exiting the competition at The Britannia Stadium, losing 2-0 against Premier League side Stoke. That impressive run also saw Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal named as Manager of the Tournament to boot! Manchester City were crowned as the League Cup champions on Sunday at Wembley after overcoming Liverpool on penalties.

A QUESTION OF SENSE

Carlos Carvalhal questioned the second sending off in as many games for Fernando Forestieri following the forward’s dismissal at Hull. Forestieri saw red for picking up two yellow cards, the second of which was questionable, said the Owls’ head coach. The Italian was also sent off at Preston last weekend. Carvalhal said: “For me it is a question of sense. “I accept the first yellow card because there was a push but for the second I absolutely do not accept because there is a foul, there is contact and the defender knew this situation. “Even if there was no contact, what is Fernando supposed to do? “Sometimes to be safe you must jump out of the way for what could be a broken leg. “In my opinion this was

the wrong decision and we have suffered three bad decisions in our last three games.” Forestieri will receive a mandatory two-match-

ban, sitting out the home game against Rotherham on Saturday and the trip to Brighton four days later.
