SET THE ALARM YORKSHIRE! IT’S TIME FOR BRITAIN’S BIGGEST BREAKFAST THE countdown is on for men and women in Yorkshire to serve up the cereal, with just a few days to go until Cancer Research UK’s Britain’s Biggest Breakfast on Friday 11 March. Every day, 81 people are diagnosed with cancer in the Yorkshire. And that’s why the charity is calling on people across the region to bring out the breakfast

bowls and help raise money for life-saving research. Cancer Research UK is encouraging people to organise a breakfast party at home, in the office or at school and invite their friends and family to make a donation to attend. Participants can unite with the rest of the UK and host their event on Friday 11 March or choose another day during the month to help beat cancer sooner. And it’s not too late for people across the region to sign up for their free fundraising pack so that they can show cancer who’s the breakfast boss. Nicki Embleton, Cancer Research UK spokesperson for the Yorkshire, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response from our foodie fundraisers in the region, and we’re delighted that so many people are set to conjure up a breakfast bonanza this March. “We want Yorkshire men and women to make their

breakfast bigger and better than ever - and there’s still time to get involved! It’s time to grab your friends, family, neighbours and work colleagues and gather round the breakfast table. The money donated will help us to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.” Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its research but with help from the people of the Yorkshire the charity is fighting the disease on all fronts. Cancer Research UK’s Britain’s Biggest Breakfast pack contains everything supporters need to plan their perfect breakfast, including posters, decorations, recipe suggestions and fundraising ideas. Event hosts can simply collect donations upfront from friends and family or on the day of their breakfast. To sign up and get a free fundraising pack, visit cruk.org/breakfast

100 Well Known Songs FROM “THE KING OF SINGALONG”

One thing you cannot afford to be idealistic about this week Taurus, is your love life. There may well be someone who you are finding to be absolutely fascinating, but whether they’re the right person for you is another matter altogether. Call for more news and astral advice…

Your ruler is squaring up to the gentle energies of Venus this week, and this can create a heightened desire to enjoy the good things in life. It is possible that you could have a date or a meeting as the week comes to a close, which can prove really inspirational. Call for more…

The emphasis is very much on how you interact with the world at large, and you can’t do this, only on your own terms, Gemini. With Mercury, your ruler, in opposition to Jupiter, your expectations about earnings, lifestyle and where you live could reach epic proportions. Call for more…

Having realistic expectations about your home, family and emotional life is going to be very important this week. For example, if you’re thinking of moving, be wary of taking on a property that could become a financial millstone around your neck, even if it is rather grand. Call for more…

Your appreciation of new vistas, literature, film, photography and different cultures can be absolutely exceptional this week. Mind, if you are trying to engender support for a scheme of yours, don’t try too hard to push your message. Someone may feel you’re over gilding the lily. Call for more…

You can find yourself being especially optimistic from Monday through to Thursday, as Mercury goes face-toface with Jupiter. And if you have ideas that you want to promote this aspect will really help you. People are likely to take what you say, very seriously. Call for more advice…

You could encounter someone this week who has something of a mystical aura. If you are single and such a meeting happens, this could set your pulse racing. Just consider that there may be other elements of this person’s personality that you are yet to fully understand. Call for more…

Something you’ve been working on behind the scenes can be showing a very healthy trend. In fact, the harder you’ve worked the more this can manifest itself as an improvement in your circumstances. Take your time before getting involved with someone new. Call for more…

The most important thing in anyone that you’re trying to co-operate or collaborate with, is that you can get on at a more emotional and practical level. Mars can potentially be a mischief maker, and see you be a bit impatient for progress. Try to slow things down. Call for more advice…

Don’t underestimate the strength of your personality and the impact you can have on the circumstances you find yourself involved in. In fact, someone can be totally enthralled by your sparkling aura. One alliance can also take a giant step forwards. Call for more advice…

MAKEOVER FOR INDEPENDENT SHOPS ON LONDON ROAD Local shops in a Sheffield district centre are getting a makeover in a project aimed at putting the heart back into the area. This will be the third such project for the city Work started this week to refurbish over 100 shop frontages on London Road, giving them new signage and guttering, and sprucing them up. The work is expected to take around 10 months and is part of Sheffield City Council’s strategy to help, support and promote District and local shopping centres. The cost is funded by the New Homes Bonus. Councillor Jayne Dunn the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing said: “London Road has a strong community and excellent transport links, but has many shops in poor state of repair. Given that this is one of the main routes into the city centre, this project will help the area become more attractive to shoppers and boost the centre’s potential. “The scheme is about more than refurbishing some shop fronts. Regenerating shopping centres can put the heart back into a district and make it a place where people want to live and businesses want to invest, and encouraging housing development on nearby vacant sites. “With over 100 shops signing up to the scheme, work will be going on throughout the spring and summer and into next year. Businesses will remain open at all times and we aim to keep disruption to a minimum. We can assure shoppers that it will be worth the wait.” Paul Roberts from contractors RF Joinery and Shopfitting Ltd added: “We are proud to be working in conjunction with Sheffield City Council and the local community to regenerate areas within the local community and promote a sustainable city.” The wider regeneration framework for the centre includes improvements to the general street scene to make the area feel cleaner and safer as well as training and support for traders.

FIVE WAYS TO HELP YOUR NEIGHBOURS SHEFFIELD BUS PARTNERSHIP Are you worried about your relatives, friends or neighbours as they’re getting older? Here’s five things that can make a massive difference to how well and happy people feel: 1. Chat Sometimes older people spend the day without speaking to anyone but we’re naturally sociable creatures and it’s really important to keep talking. They might appreciate a quick phone call to hear about your day if you’re not able to pop in and see them. Also encourage them to speak to others. It could be anywhere – in a shop, talking to a neighbour…. There’s also Silverline for people who can’t get out: www. thesilverline.org.uk 2. Move around Exercising releases happy hormones from the brain, as well as physical benefits. A gentle walk around the block or visit to your local garden centre will do it. There are also groups in Sheffield to help people stay active. 3. Take notice Mindfulness and meditation are becoming more popular and mainstream. But you don’t need to sign up to this to ‘take notice’. Taking a break from daily lives

can just mean slowing down and taking time to savour the moment. And it helps. 4. Keep learning Have they got any interests or things they always wanted to do? Local libraries are good place to start for inspiration or see what’s promoted through the Sheffield Directory. 5. Help others Helping other people is a brilliant way to feel good about yourself. This could be friends or neighbours. Sheffield also has a thriving voluntary sector and there are loads of different ways to get involved. See volunteering opportunities with Age Better in Sheffield or Voluntary Action Sheffield. 6. And finally…. Look after yourself We said there were five things but there is another really important thing – and that’s you! Caring for someone can be hard going and it’s important to look after yourself. There’s help and support available for people in Sheffield: www.sheffield.gov.uk/carers

SICK PAY RIGHTS DISABLED ACCESS FOR OLDER WORKERS DAY & CONFERENCE

A nine-month investigation by the Resolution Foundation found that the number of older people leaving employment prematurely, due to illhealth or caring responsibilities, has reached record highs. The Resolution Foundation says that helping older people stay in work longer should be at the centre of the Government’s “ambitious full employment targets”, adding that many employers have already reaped the benefits of holding on to more experienced workers. The report suggests that with improved support, employment levels among 50-64 year olds could be increased by around 920,000 over the course of this parliament, whilst employment among 6569 year olds could be boosted by 240,000. The report recommends that the right to Statutory Sick Pay should be extended beyond six months for workers over the age of 50, allowing them more time to return to work following a period of ill-health with similar rights for those who need to take time off for caring responsibilities. The Resolution Foundation says that these recommendations would help keep employers in touch with their staff, whilst also reducing the number of older people leaving the labour market altogether. The think tank also calls for a new focus on “high quality part-time work”. This, they claim, would help to keep older people in the labour force for longer.

A public meeting was held on 29th February 2016 at Sheffield Town Hall by Sheffield Bus Partnership. The meeting was held to discuss the big citywide changes that came in in November. A number of bus routes were removed, replaced or re-numbered, leaving many passengers frustrated. The organisations responsible for bus travel in Sheffield also answered commuters’ questions. Following the meeting, Councillor Terry Fox, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, following the Sheffield Bus Partnership meeting in the Town Hall on 29th February 2016: “I am very grateful to all those who submitted questions and attended today’s meeting. We have noted all the comments and will be discussing them at a full meeting of the Transport Committee this summer. “I recognise that the bus operators have made changes to the services and increased the number and capacity of the buses, with around 60,000 residents now benefitting from the city bus ticket. However, we will continue to work together and monitor performance closely to ensure the level of services meets the standards that local people demand.”

The Biomat is a sixteen-layer medical device that incorporates negative ion and far infrared ray therapies with the health benefits of amethyst to produce a "heating pad" that gives long-lasting healing effects. Used to treat and prevent many different ailments, using a Biomat means healthier living. Biomats will improve anyone's energy, health and immune system. Biomats are great for patients with Cancer, Lyme disease, MS, Diabetes, Stress, Arthritis and all other ailments.

Scientific Fact: Exposure to far infrared rays are the key to preventing metastatic cancer and strengthening immunity.

Biomats are a perfect way to fight off disease. The Biomat heats and activates the body from the inside out. The same infrared rays you would receive from the sun are projected deep into your body. As your body temperature rises, the biomat induces a false fever that then stimulates your immune system. As a result, your body detoxifies and all of your bodily functions are effected in a positive way.

07570 167113

Warming your body in this way has also been proven to prevent Cancer.

Infrared Rays raise body temperature, warming the blood and expanding the blood vessels. There is an increase in peripheral blood flow and volume, resulting in improved circulation & heart function.

WIN TICKETS TO THE EASTER FAMILY FUN DAY AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE

Celebrate this EASTER EGGS TRADITIONS FROM AROUND In some countries like Sweden, Norway and Germany eggs are used as a table decoration hanging on a tree-branch Easter eggs from Croatia In Germany, eggs decorate trees and bushes as Easter egg trees. In the North of England, during Eastertide, a traditional game is played where hard boiled pace eggs are distributed and each player hits the other player’s egg with their own. This is known as “egg tapping”, “egg dumping” or “egg jarping”. The winner is the holder of the last intact egg. The losers get to eat their eggs. The annual egg jarping world championship is held every year over Easter in Peterlee Cricket Club. It is also practised in Italy where is called Scuccetta (Mainly in Marche Region), Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Latvia and other countries. In parts of Austria, Bavaria and German-speaking Switzerland it is called Ostereiertitschen or Eierpecken. In parts of Europe it is also called epper, presumably from the German name Opfer, meaning “offering” and in Greece it is known as tsougrisma. In South Louisiana this practice is called Pocking Eggs and is slightly different. The Louisiana Creoles hold that the winner eats the eggs of the losers in each round.

The central European Slavic nations (Czechs and Slovaks etc.) have a tradition of gathering eggs by gaining them from the females in return of whipping them with a pony-tail shaped whip made out of fresh willow branches and splashing them with water, by the Ruthenians called polivanja, which is supposed to give them health and beauty. Egg rolling is also a traditional Easter egg game played with eggs at Easter. In the United Kingdom, Germany, and other countries children traditionally rolled eggs down hillsides at Easter. This tradition was taken to the New World by European settlers, and continues to this day each Easter on the White House lawn. Different nations have different versions of the game.

THE WORLD

In some Mediterranean countries, especially in Lebanon, chicken eggs are boiled and decorated by dye and/or painting and used as decoration around the house. Then, on Easter Day, young kids would duel with them saying ‘Christ is resurrected, Indeed He is’, breaking and eating them. This also happens in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, Greece and Cyprus (where the eggs are painted red). In Easter Sunday friends and family hit each other’s egg with their own. The one whose egg does not break is believed to be in for good luck in the future.

Enjoy a spring day out with all the family at the first Family Fun Day of 2016 at Doncaster Racecourse. Once through the gates there’s tons of free entertainment to enjoy! Local favourite children’s entertainer Mr Dan will be encouraging the kids to take part in his Circus Skills Workshop; The Creation Station will ensure the little ones get arty with some fun craft activities;

11

there’ll be a penalty shootout with Mini Kicks; Zoe’s Party Animals will be providing pony rides and a petting zoo; and Talegate Theatre Productions will be giving away panto tickets to see Sword in the Stone in the colouring competition. With 7 races on the card, there’ll be plenty of racing action for the grown-ups to enjoy on a Sunday afternoon. As always, children under 17 are free! All you need to do to enter to win a pair of Grandstand Enclosure tickets to the Easter Family Fun Day is send your name and a daytime contact number to either info@mercuyrnewspaper.co.uk or by post to Doncaster Racecourse Competition, The Mercury, 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before Friday the 25th March Terms and conditions apply. Prize is two Grandstand Enclosure tickets for Sunday, 3 April, 2016. Prize has no cash value, is non-transferable and nonrefundable. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer or promotion. All competition tickets can be collected from the Ticket Collections Booth at Doncaster Racecourse on Sunday, 3 April, 2016. For full terms and conditions of entry, please visit www. doncaster-racecourse.co.uk.

Cascarones, a Latin American tradition now shared by many US States with high Hispanic demographics, are an emptied and dried chicken egg stuffed with confetti and sealed with a piece of tissue paper. The eggs are hidden in a similar tradition to the American Easter egg hunt and when found the children (and adults) break them over each other’s heads.

Egg dance is a traditional Easter game in which eggs are laid on the ground or floor and the goal is to dance among them without damaging any eggs which originated in Germany. In the UK the dance is called the hop-egg. The Pace Egg plays are traditional village plays, with a rebirth theme. The drama takes the form of a combat between the hero and villain, in which the hero is killed and brought to life, The plays take place in England during Easter.

In Greece, women traditionally dye the eggs with onion skins and vinegar on Thursday (also the day of Communion). These ceremonial eggs are known as kokkina avga.

PARALEGALS PULL PLENTY OF PUNCHES FOR CANCER CHARITY

Hannah Berridge and Josie Jones , who both work at Irwin Mitchell Solicitors will pull on their boxing gloves to raise as much money as possible for the cancer charity From left to right: Sam 'Speedy' Sheedy, Josie, Hannah and Glyn Rhodes MBE prepare to pull punches for cancer charity Beginner boxers, Hannah and Josie, who have never stepped into a boxing ring before, will box separate opponents for 3, 2 minute rounds on the 19th March at this special event at Bramall Lane with hopes of raising over £500 for the charity. In support of friends and colleagues who have fought or are still fighting cancer, the pair will pull punches with a chosen opponent after undergoing 8 weeks of intense training at the Sheffield Boxing Centre. Josie (22) from Woodhouse said “Choosing Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity as our benefiting charity was an easy decision for Hannah and I." “We both know so many people affected by cancer that it made sense for us to help raise funds for the regions only cancer hospital, which offers such brilliant care to cancer patients and their families in our region.” “Neither of us have ever done anything like this before and although we’ll be really pushing ourselves and it’s a daunting prospect, we really hope it raises money and awareness for our local cancer hospital.” Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. To achieve their fundraising target of £500, both Josie and Hannah have received utmost support from their employer, Irwin Mitchell, who have, in recent years,

worked closely with the cancer charity on various initiatives. Not only have the law firm agreed to promote the duo’s fundraising efforts, but fellow employees have also shown their support by buying tickets for the night and donating to Josie and Hannah’s JustGiving page. Hannah (26) who is originally from Rotherham and now lives in Richmond, Sheffield said “We really wanted to support a cancer charity that not only supported one aspect of cancer care, but provided funding for projects which support patients from initial research of their disease right up until after care.” “We are so lucky to have Weston Park Hospital right on our doorsteps here in Sheffield and the praise for the services provided their simply could not be more positive.” With an ageing population and improved diagnosis, the cancer charity are facing a growing challenge to support the services provided by Weston Park Hospital and ensure that patient comfort and quality of services delivered remain a priority for the charity. Charity Community Fundraiser, Lucy King said, “We want to wish both Hannah and Josie the best of luck for their fights and thank them for choosing to support the charity at this special event.” “We’re encouraging people across the region to take on a fitness challenge during 2016 whilst raising funds to support the vital work of Weston Park Hospital.” To support Hannah and Josie’s Pink Collar Boxing fundraising visit their JustGiving page at: www. justgiving.com/HannahBerridge-JosieJones

A SALUTE TO THE 40s AT SHEFFIELD CITY HALL A Salute to the 1940’s is a variety show packed full of the stars who kept the nation entertained during the dark years of 2 world wars. The show is now in its 5th year, being rebooked everywhere it plays. This year we have added tributes in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of WWI. Including all the regulars; George Formby, Vera Lynn, The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra and Gracie Fields; we now have added Marie Lloyd, Harry Lauder and occasional special guests, plus recitals of the poems of Wilfred Owen. Prepare yourself for an afternoon of pure entertainment! This show will have you on your feet singing along and waving your flags with pride. It is all held together by your very own air

raid warden, Warden Braithwaite. As soon as you walk into the room, you will be transported back into the 1940’s with flags, posters and bunting. This memorable show will finish with a truly patriotic finale guaranteed to leave you bursting with pride. A Salute to the 1940's is produced by Sheffield's Gazza Productions and features the City's UK number one Vera Lynn tribute, Lorrie Brown. Lorrie was voted UK number one Vera Lynn tribute by the agents association of Great Britain and was invited to meet Dame Vera shortly afterwards at her home. Last year Lorrie was featured on BBC Look North to talk about their meeting. Lorrie is well known in the Sheffield area and for the last 15 years has been performing in local

hotels and residential homes in between touring the UK with her show. The show is produced by Lorrie's husband Gary Birtles who was born and raised in Sheffield and is a regular guest on BBC Radio Sheffield's Rony Robinson show. Between 2011 and 2013, Salute to the 1940's

performed in Sheffield's Peace Gardens on Armed Forces and Veterans Day. A Salute to the 1940's is at Sheffield City Hall on Tuesday 12th April. Tickets are available online through at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office

believe the children are our future”, cheesy, but so very true. The good work of the preschool ensures our local children get the best start in life and it’s great to be able to help in such a small way. Morfitt Smith – we care about your move, and your family.” Money raised from the 2015 event went towards buying new outdoor equipment, scooters and bikes for the preschool, which is a registered charity and provides term time preschool education to 70 children aged two to four years. “This is a true ‘community event’ with everyone coming together to work in partnership. The preschool will be able to buy exciting new equipment and resources for the children, whilst local people benefit from selling their unwanted items, as well as bagging a few bargains along the way. Last year we had 200 customers through the door and this year we are hoping for many more” Sarah Watson, Chairperson Greystones Preschool. There will be goody bags full of free samples and treats for the first 100 customers on the day. TRAMLINES FESTIVAL ADDS JURASSIC 5 AND KELIS Tramlines - Sheffield’s award-winning inner-city music festival - has added hip-hop heroes Jurassic 5 and pop icon Kelis to its 2016 bill, alongside a whole host of new additions. The festival, which takes place from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 July across four outdoor spaces and 15 venues across the city, is widely recognised for its consistently diverse lineup. This year's bill is no exception, delivering a genre-defying mix of talent including co-headliners Jurassic 5 and Kelis, alongside Mystery Jets, Gaz Coombes, My Nu Leng, Novelist, Floorplan, Skream, Leon Vynehall, Scuba and many more. The new additions join the already announced likes of Dizzee Rascal, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Field Music, Young Fathers, Dawn Penn, Toddla T, Goldie MBE, Little Simz, Norman Jay MBE and many more Alternative hip-hop legends Jurassic 5 (Sunday) continue to add to Tramlines' reputation as a key event for fans of the genre, joining festival alumni including Public Enemy, Sugarhill Gang, De La Soul, Mobb Deep and more. The ground-breaking and critically-acclaimed group helped to shape the sound of hip-hop in the 90s, with their influence continuing to be heard today. Meanwhile, US pop icon Kelis will perform hits from her 15-year career and astounding, six-album back catalogue. A hugely talented and influential artist, fans will be able to enjoy Kelis' closing set on Tramlines' outdoor Main Stage on Saturday 23 July. Elsewhere, festival organisers have added to the burgeoning list of guitar bands on the bill, with festival favourites Mystery Jets and former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes both newly announced. As always, Tramlines provides an impressive platform for emerging talent, with further additions to the lineup including Belfast duo exmagician (formerly Cashier #9); BBC 6 Music sweetheart Laura J Martin; the genre-spanning electronica of Miles from Kinshasa; the downtempo groove of Roseau; rising MC Coco; the dreamy melodies of Portland duo Pure Bathing Culture; sophisticated alt-pop duo Ardyn

and anthemic indie-rock from Sundara Karma. The latest announcement also sees a huge injection of electronic and bass music talent. One of the hottest names in electronic music, Bristol-based Black Butter duo My Nu Leng will appear, showcasing their inventive, dark and atmospheric take on garage. Elsewhere, much-hyped grime artist Novelist, dubstep-guru-turned-techno-master Skream, the stylish house grooves of Leon Vynehall, jazz drummer Paleman, Scuba, Boddika, Zed Bias, Tom Trago and Sheffield duo Sticky Blood all join the bill, alongside Detroit techno legend Robert Hood, under his ground-breaking Floorplan alias. Now in its eighth year, Tramlines is a unique cultural experience, attracting over 100,000 festival-goers and an incredibly varied and engaging selection of international and UK talent to Sheffield. 2015 saw sell-out crowds enjoy an unforgettable weekend with a new Main Stage doubled in capacity to 15,000 and performances including Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans, Buzzcocks, Sugarhill Gang, Martha Reeves, Slaves, Billy Bragg and more. Tickets for Tramlines Festival 2016 are now on sale and, as ever, they remain seriously good value. A full weekend ticket (covering all stages from day until night) comes in at the bargain price of just £42 +bf. The 2016 ticketing system brings with it some changes, with the introduction of Day and Night tickets now making it easier for festival-goers to catch their favourite bands. From £23 +bf, fans of bands, new music, and those for whom watching the headliners is a must can opt for a Daytime Ticket, providing access to all outdoor stages and various venues. For fans of dance music of all kinds, from techno to D&B and everything in between, a Nighttime Ticket is available for £20 + bf, permitting entry to clubs on Friday and Saturday night, or from £5+ bf if Sunday is the night to stay out! For up-to-the-minute information about Tramlines 2016, visit www.tramlines.org.uk or follow Tramlines on Twitter @tramlines

THERAPY? AT THE PLUG Live Review Therapy? - The Plug - Thursday 25th February Words and Pic - Roy Goodall

IRISH upstarts Therapy? really have been doing what they do now for a long time and whilst it saddens me that they’re not filling the larger halls like they should be doing, at least playing Sheffield’s Plug you can almost touch them. Opening early doors meant we missed the support slot, with Therapy? already firing off with Epilepsy and Stories, this enduring talented threesome hit the ground running with a packed 23 song set. Although photographically the lighting was shocking and we all struggled to catch sight of second touring guitarist who was tucked away to the side, it didn’t dampen the love and respect that was shown towards this much admired band. This was noticed on tracks like Loose, and the haunting Diane, which shows Therapy? really can slow it down when they choose to. Although many Therapy? albums adorn my collection quite a few tunes I didn’t recognise were played tonight which was good, though just watching this lot knock out tune after ferocious tune was comfort enough. Having a stable line-up always helps as Derby tub thumper Neil Cooper played relentlessly, as did main stays Michael McKeegan on bass and guitarist and mouth piece Andy Cairns, though I did feel there was too much swearing. I feel bands like Therapy? should raise above all that. As always this engaging and evolving threesome also played Tides, a new tune off their latest four track E.P which should be out around now.

With the end beckoning it was a pleasure to hear old favourites Screamager, the brilliant Knives and of course Going Nowhere, leaving both band and audience quite breathless, with an exuberate crowd still wanting more, but sadly that was it. I’ve always had a soft spot for acts like Therapy? and whilst production and lighting were weak, at least Therapy? are dogmatically sticking at it and are still out there, recording and performing to the best of their abilities. Long may it continue…

Melvin Benn, commented: “This year really is a big one for Reading and Leeds. Five headliners across

Biffy Clyro and Fall Out Boy are going to be incredible.” Biffy Clyro and Fall Out Boy join an unparalleled line up of headliners for Reading & Leeds 2016, boasting headline performances destined to last long in the history books from Foals, Disclosure and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. CALL FOR LEARNER DRIVERS TO RECEIVE FIRST-AID TRAINING All learner drivers should undergo first aid training as part of the driving test, claims a Conservative backbencher. Will Quince, MP for Colchester, believes the move has the potential to reduce road deaths and boost knowledge of life-saving skills. He is calling for new drivers to take a four-hour practical first-aid course run by an approved provider before they are granted a licence. A number of European countries already require new drivers to receive first-aid training. In Switzerland, for example, prospective drivers must prove they have received at least 10 hours of certified first-aid training in order to qualify for a driving theory test. Mr Quince says doing something similar in the UK would give drivers the knowledge to be able to act at the scene of an accident. He cites a survey for St John Ambulance that found 59% of people would not feel confident enough to save a life, while 24% of people at the scene of an accident would do nothing until an ambulance arrived or a passer-by who knew first aid appeared. His Driving Licence (Mandatory First Aid Training) Bill is supported by the British Red Cross and St John Ambulance.

TEMPORARY TRAFFIC LIGHTS AT TINTWISTLE REMOVED AHEAD OF SCHEDULE Temporary traffic lights which have been in place along the A628 at Tintwistle have been removed 3 months ahead of plan. Contractors for Highways England have been undertaking essential work to strengthen an old retaining wall on the A628 at Cockerhill that required one lane to be closed next to the wall. Work started in October and the traffic lights, which were in place along Woodhead Road for around 100 metres, were put in as a safety precaution. The traffic lights were due to be removed in early June but contractors have been able to bring forward key elements of the strengthening work so they could be removed ahead of schedule on Friday 4 March. Highways England project manager Steven Wright said:

DIESEL TAX AT HIGHEST PROPORTION FOR OVER A DECADE Three quarters of the price of diesel is going to the Chancellor, the RAC Foundation reveals. A fall in prices at the pumps means 74% ends up with the Treasury - the highest proportion since April 2004. The proportion of tax in petrol prices is also 74% the most since January 2009. “It is true motorists have benefited recently from falling oil prices but the biggest driver of what we pay at the pumps is not Opec or the big oil companies but the Chancellor,” says Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation. “In the unlikely event fuel retailers wanted to give petrol and diesel away for free they couldn’t. Motorists would still pay 69.5p a litre on the forecourts: 57.95p in fuel duty and 11.6p in VAT. “Three-quarters of the forecourt prices paid by motorists goes straight into the Treasury’s coffers.” Fuel duty has been levied at a flat rate of 57.95 pence per litre (ppl) since 2001, while VAT is charged at 20% on both the price of the product and the fuel duty. “We know the temporary traffic lights were having an impact on drivers and we’ve been working hard so we can get the lights removed as soon as possible. “We’ve been working closely with our contractors to bring forward key elements of the scheme, resulting in work to drill new supporting posts starting much sooner than originally anticipated. “It’s down to the hard work and cooperation of our contractor, Interserve, that we are now in a position to remove the temporary traffic lights while we continue with work to finish the retaining wall. “Removal of the lights will benefit drivers who use the route regularly as well as those travelling over the Easter holidays.”

Revenue from fuel duty reached £27.4 billion in 2015, up £0.3 billion on the previous year due to more fuel being sold. Mr Gooding is urging the Government not to respond to falling pump prices by raising fuel duty in next week’s Budget. “The cost of transport is already the biggest household expense bar none and a significant cost for business too,” he adds. “Will raising duty really get us - individuals and the economy - where we need to be?” Conservative MPs are also reportedly getting ready to campaign against any rise in fuel duty. Some are worried that Chancellor George Osborne could announce a hike in the Budget.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve seen a couple of things this week which have really made me feel fed up…. Fishing is supposed to be fun, something we do because we enjoy it, and something which social media sites now allow us to share almost instantly, a record of our successes, or indeed our dismal failure. Sadly, it also allows idiots a voice too (I’m being serious here, I didn’t mean me) and I’ve noticed a few this week, and the manner in which they came to my attention frankly sickened me. I noted a young angler put up a decent fish on the internet this week. I thought it was a nice shot, a pretty fish, held out to the camera for all to admire, but the youngster in question made a misjudgement by putting a weight to the fish. I’ll be honest, I couldn’t tell if the fish weighed what was purported, I can rarely tell, but it looked about right to me, so I left a comment to congratulate the young lad…. after all, we all love a compliment. Within a few minutes of the picture becoming visible, the bullying started, and it is bullying. There is no other way to describe it, it is blatantly unnecessary, vicious and sad bullying, and the comments said far more about the poster than the junior angler in question. “Hands look big mate” was the first, a masterclass in sanctimony…. “No (expletive) way is that XXXlb!” was the next, the poster showing a marked grasp of vocabulary, and an expertise in guestimating fish weights from images, and these were quickly followed by other so called anglers jumping on the bandwagon of awfulness, all designed to crush the obvious pleasure of a young lad who had caught a fine fish (whatever weight). I was appalled…. call yourselves anglers? It is almost impossible to tell the true weight of a fish from a picture, there are far too many variables. Focal length, lighting, angle of fish, size of the captor, how the fish is held, and all manner of other factors, and I defy anybody to tell accurately without being present, how big a fish is from an image. I’ll admit that there are individuals who seek to mislead with fish weights, especially where personal gain is at stake, but not in this case, and besides, who do the dishonest really mislead anyway? I couldn’t believe the comments made to destroy this young kids’ happiness, and in a time when angling needs new blood, I’d be surprised

if he ever ventured near the bank again… If you disagree with a given weight, so what? Say nothing, no-one really cares what you think anyhow, especially if you take time to construct a malicious comment, and it says far more about the bully than the victim. Think on, encourage, don’t be a cyber-bully…. My second rant this week concerns Kevin Nash. I don’t know Kevin, I’ll concede that I’ve spoken to him, but he doesn’t know me from Adam, and we don’t drink tea together, so this is a completely independent viewpoint about the auction currently being held to allow anglers to fish his lakes Church and Copse… hallowed ground indeed. If you haven’t seen the auction, check out www.nashlakes.com to see what is on offer, but basically, Kevin is auctioning the opportunity (and it is an opportunity) to fish his famed private lakes for carp to over 60lb. This is being done to raise capital for other ventures, which will bring additional exposure and opportunity to angling, but is instantly seen by internet warriors as for personal gain. So what? Once again, no-one cares about your negativity, Kevin, like others, runs a business, and that’s it. It’s nothing to do with you, if you disagree, don’t enter the auction, don’t make a bid, don’t even read the details, but for God’s sake, shut up rambling on about ‘profit’ or ‘millionaire’ or whatever… If I had such a lake, I wouldn’t even let you near it, never mind fish it, but if Mr. Nash has made a business decision which raises the required monies, and gives someone a chance to fish the lakes, then so be it. If you don’t like it, get off your backside, spend years building a similar business, and then you might have a point worth considering. Yes, the auction winner may be well off, may have pooled resources with others, may be in a better position than you, and you may not be able to compete, but so what? I’d like a Spitfire, would love to own a Ferrari, and I wouldn’t mind buying Chatsworth House, but I can’t quite stretch to it, and I certainly don’t spend my time dissing the Duke of Devonshire because I’m feeling slightly miffed…. That’s life I’m afraid, and if you don’t like it, then I suggest you go fishing instead of telling others not to…tight lines and best fishes….

Mother Nature once again attempted to spoil the fun on Saturday, with a burst of wintry conditions leading to the postponements of all but five league games and two League Cup Quarter-Finals. League Cup Quarter-Finals Division Two’s Grimethorpe Sports took the headlines in the League cup, as they beat Millmoor Juniors of the Premier Division at Grange Park. Stevie Bennett starred for Grimethorpe with a hat-trick, with Tony Bennett and Jamie Heavey also on target. Defending Premier Division champions Swinton Athletic were pushed hard by Stocksbridge Park U21 at Mexborough Athletic Ground. In the end, goals from Enzo Guarini and Jon Billups were enough to give Swinton a 2-1 win and book their place in the Semi-Finals. Premier Division Fourth placed Jubilee Sports had the opportunity to cut the gap on the title-chasing pack with an home game against second bottom Thorpe Hesley. Thorpe Hesley in need of the points themselves fought hard to hold their hosts to a 2-2. The point does not do Thorpe Hesley much good, but they will hope that the spirited performance gives them a shot in the arm as they enter the final stretch with a few games in hand of their rivals. Handsworth Parramore Reserves’ winless run was stretched to a seven league games, as they were held

to a 1-1 draw at home against Athersley Recreation Reserves. Handsworth’s last league win came as a 2-1 win over WIckersley in late November of last year. The two go again next week on the S&HCFA Association Cup Semi-Finals. Division One The big game in Division One came in the form of a Derby in Denaby. League leaders Denaby United hosted their local rivals, and third placed, Denaby Main at Old Road. The result, as in August in the reverse fixture, was 1-1. Denaby United are having a little stutter, having not won in their last three league games. Previous to Saturday’s game Denaby Main had won their last four league games and trail the leaders by five points with two games spare. In Saturday’s other Division One game, AFC Dronfield comprehensively saw off mid-table Kingstone United 5-0 at Gosforth Playing Fields. The win takes Dronfield up to fifth. Division Two There was just one game in Division Two, Treeton Terriers hosting in-form Kiveton Park. Treeton managed to score three for the second week running, but also failed to win for the second consecutive as they fell to a 4-3 loss. Goals from Josh Sheppard, Chris Lovett, Anthony Bayou and an own goal gave Kiveton a seventh consecutive win and pushes them into a mid-table position above Treeton.

WARNOCK PROUD OF MILLERS DERBY VICTORY MILLERS chief Neil Warnock was quick to express his pride of his players following their derby day victory over Sheffield Wednesday. Matt Derbyshire’s first-half strike helped Rotherham earn the South Yorkshire bragging rights and maintain the Millers’ fine recent record at Hillsborough. Speaking afterwards, Warnock was full of praise for his players, who withstood second-half pressure from the hosts, to notch back-to-back victories and give their Championship survival fight a timely boost. “I’m just very proud of them,” Warnock enthused. “The only disappointment for me was that we had some good chances to finish but we just couldn’t get the second goal- that was the only downside really. “I thought we created some really good chances and we took it to them when we could and I thought tactically we got it spot on.” Warnock pulled off a tactical masterstroke by employing Greg Halford as an added ring of steel defensively, as he sat in front of the back four, and the Millers boss reserved special praise for the contributions of Halford and

matchwinner Derbyshire- in a superb team display. “We had a chat on Thursday and changed the formation,” Warnock added. “We thought we couldn’t let Bannan and Lee have the freedom to do what they are good at and they thread needles at times, so we stopped that. I thought Greg did a good job there but I thought everyone did. “Matt is playing out of position and he’s playing everywhere for me. He did a right shift today and he managed to get the winner which is fabulous for us.” The Millers were rewarded for their early pressure with Derbyshire’s predatory strike midway through the first half. Danny Ward came within a whisker of making it two just shy of half-time before Richie Smallwood almost put the icing on the cake with a late second. After earning his first win at the Rotherham helm against Brentford last week, Warnock admitted the Hillsborough victory was a sweet one especially with his Sheffield United affiliations. “To come against a good side and to get the three points was fabulous for us,” Warnock added.

“We had four quality chances. I can’t really remember anything clear they had, apart from when they hit the bar with a speculative shot. I thought we thoroughly deserved it but it was difficult for us. “It was doubly enjoyable for me. I think they are a good side

avenge defeat against the Iron on Boxing Day. “We have to find a way of winning a game no matter of what team is picked or what formation is picked; it’s finding a way of winning a game of football and then going again,” said Ferguson. “At the moment we’re finding it extremely difficult. We can

GAFFER BEMOANS LOSS AND SAYS ROVERS HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO WIN Darren Ferguson called for a win “no matter what” in the aftermath of a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Shrewsbury. The sides were separated by a freak goal directly from a Shaun Whalley corner in the second half which the Scot struggled to put his finger on. “You can imagine what sort of dressing room it is,” said Ferguson. “We knew how big and important the game was. We had total dominance in the first half and we really had to score in that half I felt. “I said to them at half time “don’t change anything”, we’d won all the second balls, tackles and the things we needed to do. We looked a threat and had endless corners – we could have probably done better with them. “In the first ten minutes of the second half the momentum swung because I knew their manager would get in to them – I know him well Micky (Mellon) – and I said to my players to be ready and make sure you keep doing the scrappy bit and of course the goal is an embarrassing goal really.” Ferguson now takes his side to face local rivals Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park on Tuesday night, looking to

and they’ve got a chance in the play-offs. “I got a really good welcome when I arrived off the coach, as you would imagine. Wednesday know it’s a tough game when they play against one of my teams, but I thought we edged it today.”

say that we were unlucky and all the rest of it but it doesn’t matter because we have to win. “I have to remain positive as I’m the manager and I have to make sure they go in to Tuesday night’s game – which will be a battle in a derby against Scunthorpe – and if we can, find a performance for 90 minutes instead of 45.”

FORMER EMPLOYEE PASSES AWAY

THE GREATEST PLAYER NEVER TO PLAY FOR ENGLAND?

Doncaster Rovers are saddened to learn of the passing of former media manager Steve Uttley, aged 58. Steve, a dedicated photographer, worked for the club between the late 1990’s and 2014; attending hundreds of games and capturing our dramatic rise from the Conference to the Championship in the process. Our thoughts are with Steve’s daughter Suzanne who works at the Club as the Football Administrator and the family and friends (of which there are many) at this incredibly difficult time.

To get our readers well and truly in the mood for the forthcoming European Championships in June, John Webster commences a ten part special exploring ther best players who probably should, but actually never did, represent their country. At the end of the series we

will put it to you, The Mercury reader, to give a definitive vote on the subject and decide who was the best player never to play for England. All voters will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win an England goody bag to enhance their viewing experience this summer.

No. 1 Kevin Campbell

embarrassingly failed to qualify for the previous World Cup, he would need to be playing regular first team football. The goals continued to flow at Nottingham Forest and after a brief spell at Turkish side Trabzonspor, Campbell returned to the Premier League to rescue Everton from relegation scoring 9 goals in 8 games. His hero status on Merseyside was confirmed after scoring the winner against Liverpool in his first full season. Campbell went on to score 51 goals for the toffees before injuries prevented him from making anymore first team appearances. England did of course have some excellent strikers during the nineties including Lineker and Shearer, but to score 76 Premiership goals, the highest of any un-capped English player, and not get a call-up is quite remarkable. Campbell must have been scratching his head when he saw Michael Ricketts pull on the England Jersey!

Everybody at The Mercury would also like to pass on our condolences to Steve’s family and friends. We dealt with Steve throughout his time at Rovers and he was always helpful, polite and a pleasure to deal with.

Kevin Campbell came through the youth system at Arsenal and was a prolific goal scorer in the youth team. In a single season he scored a staggering 59 goals helping the team win the FA Youth Cup. It was no surprise to see Campbell make his first team debut at the age of 18. Competition for places in the Arsenal front line was fierce during the early nineties but Campbell still managed to score 59 times in 224 appearances for the Gunners. His goals helped Arsenal win the league title in 1991 and he was part of the League Cup and FA Cup double winning team. Campbell was often over-shadowed by his more prolific strike partner Ian Wright, with whom he formed a formidable strike partnership. When Dennis Bergkamp arrived at Highbury in 1995 the time had come for Campbell to move on. If he was to break into the England side which had

BLADES NEWS2015/16 A POINT FROM THE SEASIDE FOR BLADES TURNOVER CREATES A late penalty from Che Adams earned United a point in an entertaining fixture at Fleetwood. The game had efforts cleared off the line, the ball hitting the woodwork and a red card too in the sunshine on the coast. Basham captained United as chief Adkins made four changes. On the bench, 19-year-old Whiteman was joined by fellow Academy graduate, 18year-old Irish left-back Kelly. United made the brighter start and most of attacking intent was centred around Adams, his diving header flew over the crossbar on seven minutes following an inviting cross by Brayford. Fleetwood’s first chance came as the result of a break from a Blades corner but Hunter curled wide of Long’s left post. United grabbed the lead just before the half hour mark. With space in his left wing-back role, DONE’s delivery appeared to take a take

a deflection but he was credited after the ball dropped into the corner of Maxwell’s net. The lead, however, lasted less than 90 seconds. A cross from the right saw HUNTER lose his marker and place a header into the top corner, beyond Long’s reach. Later in the half there was a penalty appeal when CalvertLewin won possession and looked to be pulled down by Ball just inside the box but referee Boyeson was not interested. Fleetwood, meanwhile, finished the first half with ten men; Davis left the field with a head injury and did not re-appear for the second half. He was replaced and there was also a Blades change at the interval Coutts taking over from Cuvelier. The start to the second half was entertaining, with chances at both ends. Ryan shot wide and then Calvert-Lewin held off Jonsson but

his half-volley was just over. Fleetwood then hit the crossbar and a post in the same move, Burns unable to convert Ball’s cross and then Flynn’s shot wide after having the time to control a pull-back from Adams. Fleetwood took the lead with the next attack. Ryan’s inswinging free-kick saw NILSSON rise highest and his header clipped the post before creeping into the net. The chances continued, at both ends. From another Fleetwood free-kick, United half cleared but Ball’s shot was on target before Edgar blocked and then Baptiste headed wide a Done corner. For the final 15 minutes the pressure was coming from the Blades. From Done’s free-kick over the defence, Hammond connected but could not find the target and then from a corner both Baptiste and Hammond won headers before Maxwell claimed the

ball under his own crossbar. From a Flynn corner, substitute Sammon’s header was cleared off the line by Burns and late on Fleetwood’s Haughton, only on the field for 17 minutes, was sent off for two bookable fouls. As five minutes of added time was announced, Flynn’s shot was blocked and then the Scotsman won a penalty from Bell. ADAMS took responsibility and beat Maxwell, despite the goalkeeper’s gamesmanship in stalling at every opportunity. There was still time for Adams to sting the palms of Maxwell again and after a frantic end there was a disallowed goal. From Done’s corner, Hammond was adjudged to have fouled Maxwell before Brayford touched into the empty net and the final whistle followed soon after.

TURMOIL AT LANE By Andrew Smith

It is fast approaching the anniversary of Sheffield United’s most recent play-off failure. On the 11th of May last year, a 5-5 draw with Swindon Town was not enough to see the Blades progress to Wembley. Of the 11 players that started against Swindon Town at the County Ground, only 2 were in the first XI against Fleetwood Town, those being Ryan Flynn and Matt Done. 6 of the players who featured at Swindon, no longer play for the club. Ben Davies, who appeared as a substitute that day, joined Portsmouth, later Marc McNulty and Keiron Freeman joined him on loan deals. Craig Alcock, a regular figure last season, has since joined Doncaster Rovers on a permanent deal following a loan spell. Bob Harris, who has suffered with injuries, which has reduced his playing time, joined Fleetwood Town on loan in February. Jamie Murphy, the Player of the Year for last season, secured a move up a division to Brighton and Hove Albion. It is clear that the Blades are in a period of transition. Following a lackluster January window, Blades Co-Chairman Jim Phipps, said: “By my reckoning, counting

the January transfer window, it will take at least three transfer windows to complete the work of addressing past recruiting errors and excesses.” The club finds itself in an undesirable position in League One, and it is abundantly clear that the errors of the previous regime’s indulgence aren’t helping this year. Despite being midtable in League One, it appears as if Nigel Adkins will be given time to put right the errors made in recruitment. With several players out of contract in the summer, it would be no surprise if the line-up that the Blades featured against Fleetwood Town at the weekend, will be unrecognisable in a year.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 OWLS LOSE OUT IN LOCAL DERBY Rotherham posted a precious 1-0 win at Hillsborough and dented the Owls’ impressive home record along the way. Matt Derbyshire’s goal was the difference as Wednesday suffered only their second defeat in S6 of the season. Despite dominating almost all of the possession thereafter, particularly in the second 45, the Owls couldn’t break down a stern Millers backline – although the hosts remain in the coveted top six. Before the visitors netted their decisive goal, Wednesday had a let-off inside two minutes when Grant Ward took a neat feed from Matt Derbyshire into his stride and his sweet half volley whistled wide.

The Millers were undeterred, though, and did register on 21 minutes. Lee Frecklington delivered a telling feed right into the corridor and Derbyshire was left with a simple tap-in at the back post. Wednesday went on to pose more questions in the first half and thought they had levelled ten minutes before the break. Some outrageous skill from Aiden McGeady took the Everton loanee into the penalty area on the angle, where his shot was deflected into the net by Michael Turner. But just as the Owls were celebrating what they thought was an equaliser, the strike was chalked off after consultation between the officials deemed Turner to be in an offside position. Both sides then had quick-fire chances to score – Danny Ward slotted wide from a

Grant Ward cross before Jack Hunt unleashed a fierce drive that flew inches past the upright. Wednesday went closer still five minutes into the second period when Ross Wallace struck a curler from 20 yards that smashed against the crossbar. Then on the hour, the Owls again had the ball in the net – this time through Gary Hooper – only for the linesman’s flag to intervene once more. It was one-way traffic and substitute Lucas Joao advanced on goal to force Lee Camp into a diving save. The Rotherham keeper denied Wallace from a set piece 15 minutes from time as the Millers clung on to their slender advantage and despite staying on the back foot, the earlier damage was done and the visitors made the short hop back across South Yorkshire with the points.

A HARD COMPETITION

Carlos Carvalhal insists the Owls will pick themselves up and dust themselves down following their 1-0 defeat to Rotherham. Matt Derbyshire scored the winning goal in the first half and Wednesday couldn’t break the Millers down despite having most of the ball in the second half. Carvalhal said: “I am disappointed with the result but I am proud of my players. “They fight right until the end but the reason we lose is because we didn’t put the ball in the net. “We were very strong in the second half but we did not get the goal and this is disappointing. “It’s not just us, this is

a hard competition in the Championship, and teams are difficult to beat. “Other teams not just us will lose games against teams they are expected to beat.” Carvalhal would not be drawn on the controversy following Wednesday’s first half disallowed goal. Michael Turner flicked home an Aiden

McGeady shot that was ruled out by the officials for offside. The head coach added: “I do not like to talk about the referees. “I love football and I want to focus on that. “The last four games I have been talking about things other than the football and I am a coach, I want to get back to talking about the football.”

COMING WITH NEW ENERGY

In what was a frustrating afternoon for the Owls against Rotherham on Saturday, one positive from the derby clash was the impact of Lucas Joao. The Portuguese came on for the second half and made an immediate and notable impression on the game. Expecting more from the striker in the coming weeks, head coach Carlos Carvalhal believes Joao now brings a new energy to the table, and he explained: “He created chances, he is in good shape and he is better now than he was in the last two months. “It is good for us that he comes with new energy. “In the first half we were not with the quality that we usually play but in the second half when

we put Lucas on, it gave more freedom to Gary Hooper behind Lucas and Atdhe Nuhiu.

THE SHAKEY

“We started pressing the opponents, we created chances but we must put the ball inside the net.”
