ALBERT SNODGRASS

I had a knock at my door earlier, it was a policeman… “Mr Snodgrass?” “Yes,” I replied. “I’m afraid your dog has just been reported to have chased someone on a bike.” I said, “That’s a lie – my dog doesn’t have a bike!” I said to my missus, “Have a guess where I’ve booked you for your holiday?” She said “Seychelles?” I replied “Ok, shells, you’re off to Skegness.” I got burgled last night. They raided my collection of music VHS tapes & Mr Kipling cakes. I’m now Footloose and Fancy free. The wife told me she was leaving me because of my obsession with supermarkets. ‘But....Wait!.....Rose!’, I yelled after her. I am starting up a group to help people that keep fighting. We will be taking it outside. My mate told me that I just don’t understand irony. Which was ironic because we were at a bus stop at the time. I got home from the pub last night and my wife said, “I can’t believe how intoxicated you are.” Denying it I said, “I’m not drunk.” She said, “Yes you are.” I said, “No I’m not.” She said, “Can you tell the time?” I walked up to the clock and said, “I’m not bloody drunk.”

At the start of the exam, the invigilator says, “You have exactly 2 hours. I will not accept any papers after this time has elapsed.” Two hours later, the invigilator calls out, “Time’s up, Ladies and Gentlemen.” One student is still scribbling away ten minutes later when the invigilator has all the collected papers in a large stack front of him. Slowly, the student finishes up and walks over to hand in his paper, but the invigilator refuses to accept it. The student puffs up his chest and says: “Do you have any idea who I am?” “No,” says the invigilator. “Great,” says the student as he slips his paper into the middle of the stack.

PRICE

Limited Period Only RING FOR DETAILS The Biomat is a sixteen-layer medical device that incorporates negative ion and far infrared ray therapies with the health benefits of amethyst to produce a "heating pad" that gives long-lasting healing effects. Used to treat and prevent many different ailments, using a Biomat means healthier living. Biomats will improve anyone's energy, health and immune system. Biomats are great for patients with Cancer, Lyme disease, MS, Diabetes, Stress, Arthritis and all other ailments.

Scientific Fact: Exposure to far infrared rays are the key to preventing metastatic cancer and strengthening immunity.

Biomats are a perfect way to fight off disease. The Biomat heats and activates the body from the inside out. The same infrared rays you would receive from the sun are projected deep into your body. As your body temperature rises, the biomat induces a false fever that then stimulates your immune system. As a result, your body detoxifies and all of your bodily functions are effected in a positive way.

07493 469659

Warming your body in this way has also been proven to prevent Cancer.

Infrared Rays raise body temperature, warming the blood and expanding the blood vessels. There is an increase in peripheral blood flow and volume, resulting in improved circulation & heart function.

TEN YEAR-OLD RAISES OVER £300 TO BUY ANIMALS FROM CAFOD’S ‘WORLD GIFTS’ SCHEME 10 year-old Florence from Rotherham has raised over £300 for the Catholic Aid charity CAFOD’s ‘World Gifts’ scheme. She spent the money on 2 goats and a piglet and hopes to buy even more from her sponsored school fun run in April. She first got involved with the charity after hearing about ‘World Gifts’ during mass at the Parish of the Immaculate Conception last year. She quickly took interest and joined the parish’s CAFOD volunteer group, much to their delight, fast becoming a valuable member and a key parish volunteer. She recalls, ‘the older people were so pleased that

I wanted to join as not many children take interest in this sort of thing. They let me speak at my parish twice about the CAFOD Lenten appeal this month as I thought the parish would listen to someone younger like me. It is totally different to what most of my friends do at the weekend and is a great chance for me to help those in poverty.’ Anne Prior, CAFOD representative for Hallam, said ‘Florence has been like a breath of fresh air to our work in the Hallam Diocese. She spoke to a group of 40 volunteers at our Lent preparation meeting and told us her inspiring story.’ As well as volunteering in her parish, she also selfstarted a number of fundraising events at her primary school, organising a raffle for the names of the animals she intended to buy and setting up a donation instead of a Christmas card exchange last December. ‘A lot of my friends were confused as to why they

couldn’t give out Christmas cards’ she goes on, ‘but the teachers and some of the older students understood why I was doing this and were really impressed with my ideas. I now have my own board at school where I can update everyone on my fundraising and what animals I hope to buy next.’ Florence has also organised a sponsored student fun run at her school to take place the week commencing the 19th of April where she hopes to raise even more money for another gift. ‘We all have so much stuff at home we don’t need, and these people in the poorest communities have nothing. This is what I want to change. If I can get them a goat or a football that would make all the difference to their lives, then why not?’

MEZE PUBLISHING WINNER OF ‘BEST NEWCOMER’ IN THE 2016 IPG INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING AWARDS

Meze Publishing, a Sheffield-based publishing company specialising in cook books has won the Best Newcomer Award at the 2016 IPG Independent Publishing Awards, less than two years since publishing their first book. The awards are run by the Independent Publishers Guild and reward “outstanding achievement” in various fields of publishing. Meze were nominated for the Nick Robinson Newcomer Award alongside Orenda Books and PG Online with winners announced at the awards dinner on Thursday March 3. Meze is the brainchild of specialist cook book designer, Paul Cocker and experienced publishers Phil Turner and Nick Hallam. The firm specialises in publishing regional cook books alongside chef titles, including the likes of MasterChef finalist and Scottish Chef of the Year Adam Handling and Great British Menu’s Colin McGurran. Their Manchester Cook Book was recently the best-selling cook book in 10 Waterstones stores in the North West, outselling the likes of Jamie Oliver, Nigel Slater and Nigella Lawson. Meze are big advocates of independent and local businesses being one itself, they’re all about championing local suppliers, producers and restaurants, making the most of the food and drink on offer by creating innovative delicious dishes. Being based in Sheffield, their first book was The Sheffield Cook Book, since then they have put together The Henderson’s Relish Cook Book and Blood, Sweat & Beers which features recipes from the award-winning The Milestone Group who own popular Sheffield restaurants The Milestone, The Wig & Pen and Craft & Dough. With the success of The Sheffield Cook Book, they decided to spawn a series of regional cook books in the same vein, called the ‘Get Stuck In’ series. These

have featured a range of gastro pubs, restaurants, farm shops, delis and producers from cities and regions around the UK such as Nottingham, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and more. Most of the books include recipes from well-known chefs and celebrities from the likes of Sat Bains, Aiden Byrne, Simon Rogan, Stuart Broad, Carl Froch and Jimmy Doherty. This year they are set to release titles from current MasterChef champion Simon Wood and twoMichelin starred chef and judge on Great British Menu, Daniel Clifford. “The last couple of years have been an amazing journey,” said co-owner Phil Turner. “To have achieved the success we have had and worked with so many amazing chefs has been hugely satisfying. “But the really exciting thing is there’s lots more to come from us – and hopefully winning this award will create even more opportunities.” Phil was also keen to point out how valuable the IPG have been since they joined last year. “The IPG gives independent publishers the help and support they need to do better business, and with over 600 members of all different sizes, to win this award really is an honour, especially since sales of cook books are up 7% in 2015, it shows that this industry is growing and I’m so proud to be a part of that” he added. Previous IPG winners include Nosy Crow, Bloomsbury and Usborne Publishing.

EX-SHEFFIELD STUDENT RUNS MARATHON IN BEST FRIEND’S MEMORY Former Sheffield Hallam student Andrew Murphy, 25, is running the Virgin Money London Marathon in April for blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan in memory of his best friend, who died from leukaemia in 2011. Andrew, a café manager in Altrincham, met Alex McGrory at Wellington Road secondary school in Altrincham and they went on to study together at Sheffield Hallam University. They

became close friends, even travelling to Asia together in the summer of 2010. But while they were travelling they saw the first signs that Alex was ill – he felt tired and out of breath from just walking down the street. ‘At first we thought he was just complaining but then we started wondering if he had malaria,’ said Andrew. ‘He went for a check-up in Vietnam and the last thing we were expecting was for the doctor to say he had cancer.’ Alex was flown to hospital in Bangkok for further tests as his condition deteriorated. ‘The worst thing was having to call his mum and dad to tell them. We went from having the time of our lives to a living a nightmare’ said Andrew. Back in the UK, the Anthony Nolan register found Alex a matching stem cell donor, but the transplant was unsuccessful. A second transplant also failed to cure him. In 2012 Alex passed away, leaving his friends and family heartbroken. Now, Andrew is training to run the Virgin Money London Marathon in memory of Alex and to raise money for Anthony Nolan. ‘I want to give back what the charity gave to Alex,’ explained Andrew. He hopes to raise at least £1850 through fundraising, which could

pay for 30 donors to join the register – for people with blood cancer, that’s 30 more chances to find a cure. To raise money Andrew is hoping to organise a fine dining evening at the café he formerly managed in Sheffield. ‘The owners are really supportive and the chefs have offered to give their time for free,’ he said. ‘It’s a really important cause that makes a big difference so I hope people support it.’

Kirsty Low, head of events at Anthony Nolan, said: ‘Andrew’s doing an amazing thing by running the London Marathon in Alex’s memory. The money he raises will help us recruit more people onto the donor register to help make sure we can give people with blood cancer a second chance at life.’ For more information visit www.anthonynolan.org

Out & About this EASTER TRADITIONS FROM AROUND BRITAIN

Egg jarping, N. East England. Egg jarping is the art of tapping one hard-boiled egg against another to see which one survives intact. If you think you have what it takes to win, you should head down to the egg jarping world championships in Peterlee, County Durham this Easter Saturday.

Bottle kicking, Leicestershire. Every Easter for the last 200 years, the villagers of Hallaton and neighbouring Medbourne have squared off across a field for the prize of a barrel (called a “bottle” here) of ale. Each team kicks a bottle towards its village, hoping to cross the far stream before their rivals and win all the booze for themselves. Apparently, while the gouging of eyes is forbidden, practically every other dirty fighting trick is allowed, and broken bones are a regular occurrence.

A STEP BACK IN TIME It was with some curiosity that we set off to spend a night at the Earl of Doncaster Hotel, and as we drew up outside the impressive façade it was certainly hard to imagine that we were only a stone’s throw from the town centre. I can only say that entering the hotel was like stepping back to a golden age in time. The themed art deco interior is impressive to say the least, and Parisa, the lovely girl on reception, met us with a beaming smile that never seemed to leave her face throughout our stay. Checking in to our spacious and luxuriously appointed room, we were more than pleased with the amenities on offer and the comfort of the bed – a good start to the evening! Valentine’s Weekend offered a choice – we opted to dine in the Café Bar Concerto Restaurant

rather than the ballroom. Although the restaurant was fully booked, we were shown immediately to our table and our drinks and food orders were promptly taken and after only a few minutes our starter arrived – a delicious (and generous!) portion of extremely fresh and tasty garlic mushrooms, served on a toasted brioche. Our main course of belly pork was equally delicious – crunchy crackling, tender meat and just the right amount of a delicious cider sauce, accompanied by freshly cooked vegetables complimenting the dish perfectly. For dessert I opted for the Yorkshire Cheese Platter – (which compared very favourably to similar offerings at other venues – I always object to stinginess with biscuits!) and was delighted to see a selection of hard, soft and blue cheeses on the plate, together with the obligatory celery and grapes to complete the dish. The Chocolate Heaven chosen by my wife lived up to its name by appearance, and was pronounced excellent once consumed! It would be remiss not to comment on the excellent service and attentiveness shown throughout – just the right interval between courses, and constant but unobtrusive checking that all was well.

Coffee in the lounge bar followed, with a selection of hand made petit fours, and we wandered up to the packed ballroom just in time to catch the evening’s entertainment – the superb Dave Largi performing his tribute to Barry White. The dance floor was full and the atmosphere was superb! And so to breakfast – to my mind the main basis on which I judge hotels! We were pleasantly surprised to find that breakfast was served at the table – rather than the modern trend of hot buffet bars which don’t always keep the food too well. There was really no option but the full cooked breakfast –which included beautifully fried bread and black pudding – two huge ticks on my scorecard! All in all –an excellent weekend in delightful surroundings, with faultless service and friendly smiles – we couldn’t have asked for anything more! You can find more information on the Earl of Doncaster and their forthcoming events on their website at www.theearl. co.uk or you can find them on Facebook.

MUM ON A MISSION MAKES TIME FOR TEA WITH CHILDREN AFTER CANCER SCARE A Mother of 2 from Sheffield is hosting her very own tea party this summer to support the cancer hospital that saved her life. Dorothy Davis (60) from Nether Green will invite friends and family to join her for tea and cake whilst simultaneously raising funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity after she was diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer in 2014. Experienced pianist and organist, Dorothy, who teaches piano privately at Sheffield Girls High School as well as examining, visited her GP in November 2014 after experiencing difficulty swallowing. She was referred for an endoscopy and 2 weeks later she was told the shocking news that she had cancer. Dorothy said, “Absolutely nothing can prepare you for the news you have cancer. But I knew that if I was to beat this, I needed to approach it with positivity and determination.” “The news that it had been caught early and that treatment options were available at Weston Park Hospital gave me the hope that I so desperately needed.” Dorothy embarked on sessions of chemotherapy treatment at Weston Park Hospital followed by complex surgery to remove the tumour. Just over a year on from surgery and Dorothy has vowed to support Weston Park Hospital’s dedicated charity by hosting a tea party on the 16th July with her children’s help as part of Time for Tea. Now into its 3rd year, Time for Tea is an initiative which encourages people to host or attend a tea party to raise vital funds for Weston Park Hospital

Cancer Charity. Whether it’s a tea party at home, in the community, or at work, the cancer charity is inviting supporters from across the region to pop the kettle on and bake some buns throughout the month of May. Dorothy continued, “It’s been a difficult and emotional year so this Mother’s Day marked a poignant day for us all when we sat as a family, and start planning our tea party.” “The staff at Weston Park Hospital and the surgical team the Northern General helped me stay so upbeat and positive throughout treatment that we all want to show our appreciation- and what better way to do that than coming together with friends and family for a cup of tea!” Keen gardener Dorothy has signed up for Time for Tea, which has raised £60,000 since 2014, and she hopes to support life-changing projects within Weston Park Hospital by welcoming people into her home for a garden party get-together. Now feeling excited about her future, Dorothy says that without her strong support networkincluding family, friends and her students’ parents, she wouldn’t be in the place she is today. Dorothy’s daughter, Susannah said, “When my mum said those awful three words- I’ve got cancer- I felt like I’d been hit by a train and it changed my life instantly.” “Because we are so close, it felt like I had been diagnosed too.” Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity needs to raise over £1.9 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep patients at

the forefront of cancer treatment.

Charity Fundraising Manager, Sarah Cross said, “We’re delighted that despite going through such a difficult year Dorothy has chosen to support Time for Tea and host her own tea party.” “Time for Tea is a great way to come together with friends or family to support Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and help make a real difference to those fighting cancer across the region.” “Whether it’s at home, in the community or at work with colleagues, everyone can pop the kettle on and bake some buns this May to help raise vital funds for the future of cancer care at Weston Park Hospital.” “After signing up to Time for Tea, each tea party host will receive their very own pack with bunting, cake labels, invitations and other items to make their tea party a success!” A dedicated Facebook event page has been set up for Time for Tea on the charity’s Facebook page and supporters are encouraged to use the hashtag #timefortea on Twitter. To sign up for Time for Tea visit www.timeforteaparty.com or call the Cancer Charity office on 0114 2265370.

SILVER FOX SEEN RE-APPEARING IN STOCKSBRIDGE! So the rumours are true. After a frenzy of activity witnessed by residents over the last few days, The Silver Fox is due to re-appear very soon. We don’t mean the elusive creature but we do mean the famous Stocksbridge pub, closed for some time, is to re-open “in the next few days” according to new proprietor Matthew Saich. The reason Matthew cannot be more specific is because the pub

has undergone a transformation with a multi-thousand pound refurbishment and the finishing touches are being applied as The Mercury goes to press. The Silver Fox is about to become a first class food pub with new chefs, a new kitchen and an excellent dining room, furnished and decorated to the highest standard. However dining will be very affordable with meals for two

from as little as £9.00, available from the specials board. Non-diners will also be catered for in the bar where you will find another newly decorated room with great seating, a new pool table, darts, and hopefully, a new playing card club will be formed. So keep your eyes open on Manchester Road at Stocksbridge for the Silver Fox reopening or email Matthew at silverfoxpub1@gmail.com Also you can follow what’s happening on Facebook page The Silver Fox.

WHILE SHE SLEEPS Preview: While She Sleeps, 26/03/16, Vintage Rockbar Doncaster By Kt Evans

Our steel city has got a hell of a lot to be proud of…suppliers of Hendersons Relish, Tramlines Festival and coining the word ‘mardy,’ Sheffield also has one of the UK’s finest music scenes. Producing industry leaders within a range of genres, local five piece While She Sleeps really are no exception. As part of their current UK tour, the hardcore clan will be hitting Doncaster’s Vintage Rock Bar on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th March, which promises to be one of their most explosive live performances to date. It’s phenomenal to track the progress While She Sleeps have made since their formation in 2006. Kick starting their career in local pubs and live music venues, the group steadily gained international recognition through their notorious performances and fierce fan base. In 2010, the band released their first EP, “The North Stands For Nothing” which received glowing reviews from fans and press alike. This was followed in 2012 by their debut album, “This Is The Six,” which charted at number twenty seven on the UK Official Album Charts. With belter after belter of awe-inspiring tracks, it’s easy to see how While She Sleeps managed to create such a stir among the international metal and hardcore scene. So what makes While She Sleeps stand out from the crowd? Two words…their lyrics. Unlike the heaps of hardcore groups who skim over their lyrics in order to focus solely on their powerhouse rhythmic section, WSS have the ability to draw listeners in from the word go. Title track of their EP, “The North Stands For Nothing” brings to light the stereotypical separation between the North and South of the UK, whilst “Seven Hills” is a homage to the city which inspired and motivated the band to continue achieving their goals. “Our Courage, Our Cancer” is as inspirational as it is heart breaking, whilst “False Freedom” is an open diary of personal lyrics as delivered by vocalist Loz Taylor. In 2015, While She Sleeps released their hugely anticipated second studio album, “Brainwashed,” which once again achieved commercial success.

Featuring on Rock Sound publication’s most important releases of 2015 top 50 chart, the twelve track record stuck true to the originality and authenticity we all know and admire about WSS. Inspired by performing at some of the world’s most infamous festivals and live venues, the album is everything fans had been waiting three years for. Since then, we have heard announcements that the band are currently in the process of penning together their third record, however little information has yet to be given about what we should expect…so keep your eyes peeled! While She Sleeps are without a doubt one of Sheffield’s finest modern day exports. Having seized the main stages of Reading and Leeds Festival and Download Festival, the group arguably create stratospheric heights at their most intimate performances. What is so special about the group is that they never forget this. Their most recent tour, which is being undertaken as we speak, has avoided the massive venues which they so easily could sell out, instead opting for relatively small capacity stages. This really is the very essence of While She Sleeps, who are more about supplying fans with breath-taking atmosphere and memorable small shows as oppose to selling out and losing the close connection the band have with their audience. This 100% therefore goes to prove that While She Sleeps are infact simply all about the music. While She Sleeps will perform at Doncaster’s Vintage Rock Bar on Saturday 26th March and Sunday 27th March. Tickets are priced at £13.20 and are available through the bands website – www. whileshesleeps.com. Please see the website for full details.

THOUSANDS OF UK FAMILIES FACE A FLAT EASTER AS TYRE-RELATED CALLOUTS LIKELY TO HIT ONE EVERY 45 SECONDS Thousands of UK families face a flat Easter as tyre-related callouts - over one of the busiest periods on UK roads - are likely to hit one every 45 seconds, according to research by AA Tyres, the AA’s mobile tyre fitting service. And with more than 15 million cars on the roads over the Easter period, almost four million motorists could be “dicing with death”, as separate research provided to the AA by TyreSafe, the not-for-profit organisation raising awareness of tyre safety, reveals that one in four cars and vans on UK roads in 2015, was driven with an illegal and dangerous tyre. AA Tyres urges motorists to check their tyres before the Easter getaway so they can be replaced if they are damaged or illegal, and to make sure they are correctly inflated. The AA is expected to handle at least 7,500 tyrerelated callouts over the Easter period across the UK, based on 2015 figures. That equates to almost 80 every hour, or one every 45 seconds. Tyre-related problems are the second most common

HIGHWAYS ENGLAND REMOVES ROADWORKS FOR YORKSHIRE AND NORTH EAST DRIVERS FOR EASTER BREAK More than 450 miles of major roadworks will be lifted over the four-day Easter break to make journeys better for families. Highways England aims to complete or lift 208 sets of roadworks by 6am on Thursday 24 March – leaving more than 97% of its 9,534-mile network free of roadworks in time for the holidays. In Yorkshire and the North East we will be lifting 12 sets of roadworks, have completed 22 sets and 8 sets will remain for the bank holiday weekend. The government is investing £15billion to deliver the biggest upgrade to motorways and major A-roads in a generation. Building new roads and creating smart motorways that keep traffic moving even in the busiest periods will cut congestion – and Highways England is taking action to reduce delays over the bank holiday break. Roads Minister Andrew Jones said: “We want to deliver fast and reliable journey times for drivers over the bank holiday weekend so I am pleased hundreds of miles of cones are being lifted. “This is good news for millions of families and hardworking people who will be travelling and taking advantage of the four-day break. “We are delivering £15billion of upgrades to our roads to make our highways fit for the future – but motorists should not needlessly be held up.” Highways England Director of Customer Operations, Mel Clarke, said: “This Easter, we’re helping drivers with their journeys by clearing roadworks across the majority of motorways and major A-roads in England. “We’ve worked closely with other transport providers to ensure our network can cope with increased demand, and we’re pleased to say that 97.2 per cent of our roads will be free of work to help Easter road trips go smoothly. “By suspending or completing roadworks, more lanes will be open and many of the associated speed

reason why drivers call for AA assistance, with more than 500,000 over the past 12 months. And it’s not surprising given that up to 10 million motorists were potentially driving with an illegal and dangerous tyre last year, according to TyreSafe’s research. Tyre-related incidents can have devastating consequences. TyreSafe research revealed that over the past five years there has been an average of 1135 tyre-related casualties a year, and of those, 198 people were killed or seriously injured. Over the four-day Easter period that would equate to at least 12 tyre-related casualties, of which at least two people will be killed or seriously injured. Legal requirements • Tyres must be compatible with others on the car and in good physical condition. • Tyres must be correctly inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure. • Tread depth must be above the legal minimum: for passenger cars this is 1.6mm throughout a continuous band in the centre 3/4 of the tread and around the entire circumference. • Check that you have a spare: there’s no legal requirement to carry a spare but if you, do it must meet minimum legal requirements if and when it is restrictions will be lifted. “Of course, we still advise drivers to plan their journeys and check the latest traffic and travel updates as well as ensuring they have enough fuel before setting out. “We’d also remind those with caravans and trailers to check their vehicles before they take to the roads for the first time this year - especially their tyres, to ensure they are not worn or damaged, to help avoid a potential breakdown or incident and help keep traffic flowing.” Highways England will complete 257 miles of roadworks at 133 locations before the Easter holiday. A further 75 sets of roadworks and lane restrictions will be suspended across 219 miles of carriageway by 6am on Thursday 24 March, until just after midnight on Tuesday 29 March. For the safety of drivers and their passengers, lane restrictions or temporary speed limits will need to remain at major schemes with large excavation areas or major structural projects which require on-going traffic management for safety.

used on the car. AA recommendations • AA recommend replacing tyres when the tread depth reaches 2mm (3mm in winter). Stopping distances are greater as tread depth reduces, especially in wet weather. Note that some European countries have different legal requirements – check the AA’s travel tips before you go. • Make sure you check the pressure and condition of your tyres regularly – AA recommends at least fortnightly. Check your handbook for pressure details; an information panel in the drivers’ door frame or fuel filler flap gives tyre pressure information. Check your spare (if fitted) from time to time as well.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve had about four hours to go fishing this week, and I spent most of those fighting off a pair of swans which obviously had it in for me as my week got off to a poor start… I woke, feeling quite cheerful if truth be told, at 0400, and even managed to get out of bed by 0500 (I’m getting too comfortable in bed for my own good these days) to make up my flask, and grab the camera kit for a full day at my chosen venue. I arrived just as it got light, and spent a few minutes looking for signs of fish before deciding where to set up. As the light improved, it became apparent that the bay in which I stood was full of fish, with around twenty five carp showing on the surface, before they slunk back into the shallow depths of the pool as the sun rose; I couldn’t go wrong surely? I quickly set up two rods, a quivertip to target bream and carp, and a sleeper rod to try and tempt a bigger fish. Both were quickly deposited in the right area, lines sunk, backleads applied where required, and I sat down to await the first bite. It came from a swan. Out of nowhere, from across the other side of the ten acre water, a pair of mute swans converged on me at speed and would not leave me alone. Every couple of minutes, one or the other swam through the lines, necessitating a recast, a swan wrestle, or an untangling, and this went on for almost two hours! I just could not shift them. I even tried taking the rods out, but they just followed me up the bank and trampled everything; it was like the Walking Dead (swan version) and they just kept coming! After thrashing the water to a foam by constantly trying to shift baits and lines to where the swans wouldn’t come into conflict, all the fish had disappeared, disturbed by the persistent birds, my temper was decidedly frayed, and I was ready to kill someone (or something) as the swans just kept pestering… I gave up. I could have moved, but I know they would have followed and by now, I was no longer in the mood for a relaxing session… Bloody things. I packed up (no sign of a huff) and, making best use of the day, spent an hour composing product shots of various products, then opted to travel to

The was a feeling of Spring in the air on the weekend, as the County Senior League turned its focus to league competition, with the exception of a Junior Cup tie involving Stocksbridge Park U21. U21 Cup Semi-Final On Thursday, the second U21 Cup Semi-Final between Caribbean Sports U21 and Wombwell Main U21 took place at Athersley Recreation’s Memorial Ground. Caribbean booked their place in the final with a very impressive 4-1 win. Caribbean have only won once in the league all season, but won all of the U21 Cup group games and now set up a final with U21 Division leaders Stocksbridge Park U21. The final will take place on Thursday 31st March at Sandy Lane, Worksop (kick-off 7.30pm). S&HCFA Junior Cup Semi-Final The aforementioned Stocksbridge Park U21 have another final to look forward to, after the beat Ryhill Seniors 2-0 in the S&HCFA Junior Cup Semi-Finals on Saturday. Stocksbridge will face Barnsely outfit Euroglaze FC, who beat Fossils 5-3 in their SemiFinal. Premier Division League leaders Frecheville drew their first game of the season on Saturday, as they were held 0-0 by Athersley Recreation Reserves at Sheerien Park. It is the first time this season that Frecheville have gone

GO-Fishing in Stoke for whom I do some social media work (check out the pages, we would love to see you) and catch up with the staff to see what’s new. Phil has been at GO for ever. A stalwart of the angling department, who hates having his picture taken, I was quick to coerce him into posing with our next competition prize for a quick snap, prior to scheduling it into our social media programme. I often drop into the store to speak with staff and customers alike, to try and maintain regular contact to keep abreast of what is popular, such as the monthly WOW deals and other great offers, and it’s always nice to see what new products are hitting the shelves. After an hour in store with Phil, it was time to get back to the van for the return journey home to upload the images and programme them in. I try to schedule a couple of days in advance, but it can be difficult sometimes to find appropriate and engaging things to post. I currently run social media pages for four different companies, averaging at least two posts per day on Facebook, and two each on Twitter, amounting to sixteen per day, or over one hundred every week! Hopefully, next week, I’ll get some time on the bank, (without any swans) as I’ve got a new venue in mind, one of the highest in England, and after having a quick wander around earlier this week for an Angler’s Mail video, I saw some very nice fish caught. It’s cold and it’s windy, but they were biting, so all being well, I’ll have something piscine to report next time! Tight lines…

back-to-back league games without winning. Orrin MacIntyre scored the only goal as second placed Houghton Main beat Handsworth Parramore Reserves 1-0 at Middlecliffe Lane. The win takes Houghton Main within six points of Frecheville, crucially the two meet twice in the next month. Swinton Athletic continued they good form, as goals from Darren Walker and Dan Morton gave them a 2-0 home win over Swallownest FC. The win takes Swinton above Swallownest and into third position. Swinton are 14 points off the pace, but do have three games in hand of the top two. Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves extended their unbeaten run to eight games, with a 3-1 home win over Wickersley. The win takes Stocksbridge into a lofty fourth place in the table. AFC Penistone Church recorded an impressive 4-1 away win over Oughtibridge WMFC. Penistone are unbeaten in their last five away games. A brace from Carey Welford inspired North Gawber Colliery to a 3-1 away win over Thorpe Hesley. Luke Marsen was also on target for North Gawber. Division One A single goal from Steve Ellor gave league leader Denaby United a 1-0 home win over Millmoor Juniors Reserves. Second placed Denaby Main also recorded a close victory, as they beat Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 2-1 at Chaucer School. Denaby Main’s win leaves them only two points back from the leaders with a game in hand. Caribbean Sports are also only two points off the pace, after they beat Silkstone United 2-1 on Saturday. down to the wire. Wombwell Main immediately bounced back from last weeks’ defeat to Denaby Main, with a convincing 3-0 away victory over South Kirkby Colliery. Wombwell are in fourth place, nine points behind the leaders, but have five games in hand. Byron House ended a run of back-to-back defeats, with a 2-1 win over Kingstone United at Norton Playing Fields. Elsewhere, Davy FC drew 1-1 at home with Sheffield Bankers. Division Two Kiveton Park’s eight game winning run came to a valiant end, as they lost 1-0 to league leaders Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. John Whitehead grabbed the winner for Hemsworth, and vitally keeps them nine clear at the top. A Nathan Corker hat-trick helped second placed Brinsworth Whitehill to a 4-2 win over Sheffield Lane Top at the Pheonix Sports Club. North Gawber Colliery Reserves stretched their winning league run to four games, with an impressive 2-1 home win over third placed New Bohemians. Danny Glover grabbed a brace, to help Houghton Main Reserves to a 5-3 away win over Swallownest FC Reserves. Treeton Terriers claimed a very good point, as they drew 3-3 at home with in-form S&HCFA Association Cup finalists Grimethorpe Sports. Third from bottom Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves were held to a 2-2 draw at home by second bottom Bawtry Town. The point is the first that Bawtry has taken since September

A THOROUGHLY PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE Rotherham United manager Neil Warnock dubbed his side’s 1-0 win over Premier League hopefuls Ipswich Town a ‘thoroughly professional performance’ following a result that moved the Millers out of the drop zone. Leon Best’s third goal in two games on the stroke of half time proved to be the difference at Portman Road as another battling performance from the Millers saw them return to South Yorkshire with maximum points. The Rotherham United boss was delighted by how his side executed the gameplan in Suffolk

and admitted he was pleased to see his team move out of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone following the victory over the Tractor Boys. “It’s no good saying it isn’t, it is nice,” Warnock said when asked about the table standings. “It just shows you what an achievement this group has done. Four wins and a draw and we are only just out of the bottom three, shows just how far adrift we were. “I thought it was a thoroughly professional performance if I am honest. As I have said before we are a little limited but we are wellorganised and we know what we

are doing and we break whenever we can and try to score goals. “We are not out of the woods by a mile, but it is nice to see yourselves out of the bottom three and putting pressure on other teams.” Warnock paid tribute to another industrious Millers performance at Portman Road and insisted that everyone played their part in the 1-0 triumph at the hands of Ipswich Town. “The lads all chipped in and I thought they were superb,” he enthused. “The way we defended, the way we tackled, young Grant tackling back on his own goal

line. I thought Camp’s handling was very good to say he didn’t really have a save. He was really confident. “I have got to say Besty caused them problems all afternoon. Derbyshire – I have never seen anyone work so hard and young Grant Ward came to the fore today. “I don’t think Lee Camp has had a shot to save. There were a lot of long throws and balls into the box in the second half. But when I look around the team the centre halves were superb, Doyley has not played for a long time, the full backs have done well and in front of them, Greg and the two lads in

GAFFER HURTING AFTER LAST MINUTE SETBACK

Darren Ferguson described Saturday’s last gasp defeat to Peterborough United as “devastating” as Rovers poor run continued. Despite James Coppinger’s early opener, the hosts were pegged back by an Aaron Williams header before Ricardo Santos poked home a 93rd minute winner which put Rovers in the relegation zone. “I would have been disappointed if we’d drawn!” Ferguson said. “In terms of performance in the second half we’ve battered them and we just needed one of our chances to go in – we had two good chances, (Nathan) Tyson in particular. “We should have had at least two penalties but I suppose everyone would say that’s how it’s going at the moment. “You lose a game like that with such a bad mistake at the end in a game we should have won. Now’s not the right time for me to be critical of anyone though. “I would have been disappointed with a draw so to come away with nothing is a devastating result for us.” Ferguson felt that, despite a ninth home game without a win, an improved performance coinciding with the return of James Coppinger and the introduction of Wolves loanee Tommy Rowe, provided scope for optimism. “To lose the game in the manner we did is really cruel for the players, and the fans who were good,” said Ferguson. “They’ve seen a much better performance, they’ve seen a team that was having a right go and I felt for them as well because it’s bad days for them as well at the

moment. “Bringing Tommy Rowe in to the club is a big signing, he’s a good player, he’s come from Wolves and he can play in a variety of positions. “He’s aggressive, knows the league well, I know him well, he’s got good experience – I was conscious of that - and I think I was lucky to get him. “The club have really backed me on this one, again. And it was good to get him in because I know what he can bring to the table.”

midfield were fantastic.” The Millers were dealt a blow in the lead up to kick off as Danny Ward fell foul to a back spasm prior to the game ruling him out of the action, but Warnock was keen to keep his cards close to his chest, naming the striker on the bench. “We lost Danny Ward two hours before kick off today and Besty wasn’t even going to start,” Warnock explained. “You are a little bit disappointed when you lose someone like that. He had a little bit of a back spasm, but we had to put him on the teamsheet so they didn’t think he

was injured. We couldn’t have put another goalie on the bench!”

THE GREATEST PLAYER NEVER TO PLAY FOR ENGLAND? To get our readers well and truly in the mood for the forthcoming European Championships in June, John Webster commences a ten part special exploring the best players who probably should, but actually never did, represent their country. At the end of the series we

will put it to you, The Mercury reader, to give a definitive vote on the subject and decide who was the best player never to play for England. All voters will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win an England goody bag to enhance their viewing experience this summer.

NO. 3 STEVE BRUCE

Manchester United, was one of Alex Fergusons first signings, and certainly one of his best. Bruce broke into the first team and was never dropped. He went on to replace Bryan Robson as captain and was a major part of Fergie’s first great Manchester United team that went on to dominate English football. Bruce wasn’t the quickest of players but his reading of the game was outstanding. He kept cool under pressure, would run through a brick wall and won everything in the air. He also had a remarkable goal-scoring record. The most memorable of his goals were the two late headers he scored against Sheffield Wednesday which proved decisive in United winning the inaugural Premier League title. The more you think about it, the harder it is to get your head around the fact that Bruce never played for his country. Sir Bobby Robson said that not capping Bruce was his biggest mistake as England boss.

As a player there wasn’t much Steve Bruce didn’t win at club level. Three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the League cup twice, the European Cup Winners Cup and the European Super Cup. Pretty impressive by anybody’s standard. Yet despite his impressive medal collection and incredible achievements as a player, Bruce unfathomably was never called up to represent England. It was Gillingham that gave Bruce his first chance at professional level and he never looked back. After making over 200 appearances for the Gills, he moved up the leagues to Norwich City where he won the League Cup. Bruce then made his big move to Manchester United. The Red Devils hadn’t won the top flight for 20 years when Bruce signed in 1987, but under new manager Alex Ferguson, that was soon all about to change. Bruce spent eight years at

BLADES NEWS2015/16 SORRY BLADES DRAW BLANK AT DEN DEFENSIVE CRISIS A goal with less than two minutes on the clock was the difference as United battled without reward at Millwall. Less than two minutes had elapsed before Millwall were in front with the first chance of the game. Morison’s cross from the left dropped invitingly for the untracked TAYLOR to fire past the exposed Long. United

attempted to put the home side onto the back foot, using the space out wide. The first chance for the visitors was a weak Sammon effort at goalkeeper Archer. United were enjoying a fair share of possession but the better chances fell to the home side. In the space of a minute around the half hour mark, the big frame of Long saved the Blades

twice from Millwall’s front two of Gregory and Morison after they had escaped white shirts. As half-time approached, Sammon had the ball in the home net but he was offside. Baptiste lasted three minutes of the second half before hobbling out of the action, but United started well. Shots from Brayford and Flynn were blocked whilst

Millwall’s first effort of the half saw Taylor fire over. Coutts and Adams were introduced as United searched for a leveller but Long was forced to tip over a flicked Morison header from Ferguson’s cross. The late pressure was coming from the Blades but the home defence stood firm to collect the points.

BOSS FRUSTRATED BY PERFORMANCE Nigel Adkins conceded he was very frustrated following Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Millwall to The Den. Chris Taylor, who only signed for the Lions on Thursday from Blackburn Rovers, scored the game’s only goal in just the second minute to condemn the Blades to defeat in the capital. Reflecting on the loss, the Gaffer remarked: “We feel very frustrated. Gregory

and Morrison were a real handful, just as they were in the game at Bramall Lane, they were very good for Millwall. “Our back three just couldn’t get to grips with them and they set the tone for Millwall’s performance, although the noise our supporters made throughout the game was top draw. Gradually we did get into the game, we huffed and puffed

and their goalkeeper makes an excellent save from Billy Sharp. But despite plenty of possession and arguably dominating the secondhalf we didn’t get on the end of numerous setpieces and other balls into the box and that’s disappointing. Adkins added: “Millwall’s game management was very good, whenever we got any momentum they managed to take the

pace out of the game and delay things when they could. George (Long) made two or three crucial saves, but it wasn’t anything to do with our formation, we simply didn’t defend long balls over the top. It was a competitive game, we speak every week about winning our one-one-one duels and in my opinion their front two were the difference between the sides on the day.”

ADDS TO PROBLEMS By Andrew Smith

According to Alex Ferguson’s football philosophy: “Attack wins you games, defence wins you titles.” In regards to Sheffield United, most of the time the Blades have had no problem finding the net, but defensive frailties have cost the Blades dearly this season. The defeat by Millwall may leave the Blades with too much to do in the chase for the play-offs. Poor defensive performance is certainly a factor to why the Blades currently lie 12th in League One. In their last ten games, they have conceded 0.9 goals on average. Conceding just shy of a goal a game isn’t going to help a team who desperately need a run of form. The defensive worries have only deepened after Alex Baptiste limped off at Millwall on Saturday. The centre back, signed from Middlesbrough at the start of the month, is at least expected to miss the upcoming fixtures against Crewe Alexandra and Southend United. An international call-up from Canada for David Edgar leaves Adkins with little options. Adkins won’t be able to call on Neill Collins, who heads to America to join Tampa Bay Rowdies. Adkins may have to change his formation to work

around the defensive issues. The Blades have played with three centre backs in recent weeks, but the lack of cover in that area may see Adkins adopt a more traditional four at the back. The shortage at the back may lead to a chance for Harrison McGahey, who has been no stranger to the bench this season. Terry Kennedy may be rushed back into the first team picture following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 INSPIRATIONAL JOE LEADS OWLS ONTO HILLSBOROUGH PITCH A VIP Sheffield Wednesday fan’s dream came true on Saturday when he led out his favourite team on to the Hillsborough pitch before the game against Charlton Athletic – despite being told he would never walk by doctors. Joe Danforth, aged ten, was given the devastating news by doctors after he was diagnosed with a rare condition known as CHARGE syndrome – an extremely complex syndrome which occurs in just one in 10,000 births worldwide. But Joe defied the odds to walk Wednesday out of the tunnel against the Addicks – and his inspiring story received an incredible response on social media, being shared more than 7,000 times across Twitter and receiving 12,000 likes. Sport’s Facebook page, ‘The Sport Bible’, shared the footage where more than 100,000 people reacted to the video alone. The story received hundreds of positive comments from football fans both online and offline. Joe’s dad Martin expressed his gratitude via Twitter and posted the footage of Joe walking onto the

Hillsborough pitch hand in hand with Owls captain Glenn Loovens. Martin, who attends all home games with Joe, told swfc.co.uk: “I have never felt prouder than to see my son lead out his favourite team at the ground we visit every week. “We go to all the games and all he loves is his football. Joe can’t speak but football is his passion and he loves

everything Sheffield Wednesday! “Joe’s dream came true on Saturday and the experience has left the whole family, including my wife Nichola and daughter Megan who were at the game, extremely proud. “We would like to thank everyone involved for making the day happen for Joe – it’s a moment we will never forget.”

WE’VE GOT A JOB TO DO As the Owls approach the home straight, Sam Hutchinson has reflected positively on the Owls’ season to date. The 2015/16 campaign has seen Wednesday kick on impressively from last season and Hutchinson believes that is testament to the hard work of the head coach, staff and quality of the players. With eight games to go, the Owls remain in the driving seat to secure a play-off spot but there is plenty of work to do before those coveted top six positions are finalised. Hutchinson said: “We’re in a good place and position as a squad and as a team. The whole team has done fantastic this year.

“From where we were last season and how many people we have recruited, it can be difficult when you bring in a lot of players and it doesn’t always work. “The gaffer has found a formula that does work and I think everyone would have taken this so far. “We’ve had a great season but we’ve still got a job to do and nothing has been achieved yet.”

EVERYONE MUST BE READY

players that are playing more. “And another part, we can give more time and more tempo to the players that have not been playing. “We need all the players because next month we have seven games and everybody must be ready.” Wednesday head into the break in good spirits after back to back wins over Nottingham Forest

With everything still to be decided, April will be a big month in the Sky Bet Championship. It’s tight at the top but victory over Charlton at the weekend has given the Owls a three-point cushion in sixth position. International football takes centre stage over the next week, meaning no fixture for Wednesday until Saturday 2 April in the clash away at Huddersfield. For head coach Carlos Carvalhal, the break has come at a good time for the club and he said: “Now we have two weeks and it is good timing to recover the

The ex-Chelsea midfield man is revelling in the battle at the top of division and is looking forward to the fight in the coming weeks. “I’m used to the business end of the season when there is something to fight for and something to go and play for,” he said. “That is normal business for me so hopefully we can go on and do it.”

and the Addicks, both by a 3-0 scoreline. “This break is a good time for us to put everything ok and try to improve our team,” Carlos added. Joe Wildsmith, Daniel Pudil, Barry Bannan, Aiden McGeady and Lucas Joao have been called up for their respective nations during this international period.
