ALBERT SNODGRASS

Me: Boss, I’ve got a problem. Boss: There are no such things as problems, only opportunities. Me: Oh, OK. I’ve got a serious drinking opportunity. The worst part about being drunk and seeing double is when you realize it’s just one slice of pizza. Kid: Mommy’s last name must be ‘Honey’ because that’s what dad calls her. Teacher: That’s sweet. What’s her first name? Kid: ‘Sorry’ I think. I always wonder what the nurses reaction was like after I left a half eaten sandwich in a coma patients hand. My annual performance review says I lack “passion & intensity”, guess management hasn’t seen me alone with a Big Mac. Its awkward touching hands with another man in a popcorn bag, especially if you don’t know the man & he doesnt know you’re eating his popcorn. I don’t mean to brag, but I just completed my 21 day diet in 4 hours and 30 minutes. Of all the bodily functions that are contagious, thank god it’s the yawn. Most household injuries are caused by saying “whatever” during an argument. Teacher: I’m your son’s teacher and I’m calling to tell you that he may be a compulsive liar. Woman: And a damn good one. I don’t have any sons. Boss: This is the third time you’ve been late for work this week. Do you know what that means? Me: That it’s only Wednesday I think the worst thing about being stuck on a remote island would be not knowing which one controlled the TV.

Limited Period Only RING FOR DETAILS The Biomat is a sixteen-layer medical device that incorporates negative ion and far infrared ray therapies with the health benefits of amethyst to produce a "heating pad" that gives long-lasting healing effects. Used to treat and prevent many different ailments, using a Biomat means healthier living. Biomats will improve anyone's energy, health and immune system. Biomats are great for patients with Cancer, Lyme disease, MS, Diabetes, Stress, Arthritis and all other ailments.

Scientific Fact: Exposure to far infrared rays are the key to preventing metastatic cancer and strengthening immunity.

Biomats are a perfect way to fight off disease. The Biomat heats and activates the body from the inside out. The same infrared rays you would receive from the sun are projected deep into your body. As your body temperature rises, the biomat induces a false fever that then stimulates your immune system. As a result, your body detoxifies and all of your bodily functions are effected in a positive way.

Warming your body in this way has also been proven to prevent Cancer.

Infrared Rays raise body temperature, warming the blood and expanding the blood vessels. There is an increase in peripheral blood flow and volume, resulting in improved circulation & heart function.

JOIN IN THE CHOCOLA-TEA FUN TO HELP FAMILIES WITH SICK CHILDREN Big Chocolate Tea is back, and better than ever. Join The Sick Children’s Trust for the country’s biggest annual fundraising event for chocolate, tea and baking lovers! Big Chocolate Tea encourages people to host a tea party, cake sale or bake-off in the last week of April, and donate the proceeds to The Sick Children’s Trust to support families with seriously ill children in hospital. Last year the campaign raised a record £64,000, which provided 2,260 families with free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation while their child underwent lifesaving treatment in a hospital far from home. The charity hopes this year’s campaign will be an even greater success. The Sick Children’s Trust provides families with free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation, as well as emotional and practical support, when their child is undergoing specialist treatment in hospital. The charity is calling for the nation to join in with Big Chocolate Tea so it can continue to help thousands of families across the UK stay together with their sick child. Big Chocolate Tea will run from Friday 22 April to Monday 2 May, although supporters can hold an event at any point during the year. Participants are provided with a pack full of goodies to help host their event and asked to raise at least £30 – the cost of providing a room for a family for one night. The campaign has a host of celebrity supporters, including Channel 5 Milkshake! Presenter Jen Pringle, B*Witched’s Lindsay Armaou and Channel 5 weather presenter Sian Welby, who’ll be joining in the chocola-tea fun as they meet families and staff in the charity’s ten ‘Homes from Home’. Great British Bake Off star John Whaite, celebrity chef Sam Stern and ITV’s Lorraine Kelly’s Cake

Club Winner Suzy Pelta, amongst others, will also be supporting the campaign and sharing their top chocolate recipes. Celebrity ambassador, Lindsay Armaou, says: “After a busy day, nothing beats catching up with my girlfriends over a cup of tea and a chocolate treat, and that’s why Big Chocolate Tea is such a great campaign. No matter how you choose to support the campaign – be it a tea party, cake sale or cake competition – I know you’ll have lots of fun. And even better, The Sick Children’s Trust has a pack full of everything you need to get your event off to the perfect start. I’m thrilled to be supporting Big Chocolate Tea - you know you’re having fun, but are keeping families together with their sick child at the same time. That’s guilt-free chocolate at its best!” 2012 Great British Bake Off Winner John Whaite, says: “The Sick Children’s Trust provides a brilliant service to the families of seriously ill children, and I am completely in awe of the hard work they do. I am honoured to be part of this wonderful campaign once again and support a truly vital charity. I hope my recipes will inspire lots of people to come together and hold a cake sale or bake-off at work, or at home, and help raise funds for the charity. I’m looking

forward to seeing some chocolate showstoppers!” The Sick Children’s Trust runs ten ‘Homes from Home’ across the UK, providing families with free accommodation close to their child’s hospital bedside. On average, it costs the charity around £30 a night to support one family in a ‘Home from Home’ which includes a private room, access to a kitchen, living room, laundry facilities and a playroom for siblings. The Sick Children’s Trust Chief Executive Jane Featherstone says: “Big Chocolate Tea is the charity’s biggest fundraising campaign. Every year we’re amazed at the enthusiasm and creativity of our supporters – and the wonderful chocolate baking creations they share! “This year we have lots of recipes to inspire people and have made it easier than ever to get involved with an exclusive free Big Chocolate Tea pack. I know, with the public’s support, we can ensure families can be there for their seriously ill child when it matters most.” If you’d find out how you can get involved with Big Chocolate Tea, please email bigchoctea@ sickchildrenstrust.org or visit www. sickchildrenstrust.org/bigchoctea/.

MAJOR RUN ROUTE PROJECT FOR SHEFFIELD Sheffield is to benefit from one of the largest installations of running routes in England thanks to a new city-wide partnership which has secured over £100,000 of funding from England Athletics. The first phase of this trailblazing project will be completed next month (April), with eleven new run routes (ranging from 1km to 10km in length - a total of 27 Kilometres in trails) marked across seven locations in The Outdoor City. As Sheffield’s reputation as The Outdoor City grows in stature, the run routes initiative exemplifies how partnership working between local government, businesses, land owners, sport, health and community organisations can produce an outdoor recreational offering of national significance. The funding secured by Sheffield City Council’s economic development agency, Creative Sheffield and Parks and Countryside Services forms part of the Recreational Running & Athletics Plan for England: 2013–2017. By delivering this plan England Athletics aim to have 2.4 million people running once a week in England. England Athletics Chief Executive Chris Jones said: “This is the largest of the run routes projects England Athletics has undertaken in England. We are delighted to be able to support a project on the scale of this one in Sheffield. The first eleven run routes have been carefully selected to appeal to all people; not just people who already run. Essentially we want everyone to have access to well signposted, well designed running trails that they can use to run, walk and that are accessible to all. Our ambitions to grow participation

in sport and support people to be more active are mirrored by the values of The Outdoor City, making Sheffield the ideal location for this nationally significant project.” Sheffield has 13 England Athletics affiliated clubs, 24 Run England Groups and 5 parkruns including the second largest parkrun outside of London. Sheffield is home to 1251 women actively engaged in England Athletics’ This Girl Can Run campaign. To support the use of the new run routes an activation programme has been launched which aims to raise awareness of the newly marked trails and the many ways that people can use them. Emma Hurst of England Athletics explains: ”Once the run routes are in place, the real fun starts. My job is to work with key partners and community groups to raise awareness of the routes and to create new opportunities for people to use the routes by running as part of a Run England Group. Focusing largely on the communities that live, work and go to school nearby, the run routes activation programme supports a key component of The Outdoor City; encouraging people of all ages and abilities to use, enjoy and take pride in the green open spaces on their door step. The Outdoor City Run Routes project will directly contribute to Sheffield’s physical activity strategy; Move More, which aims to transform Sheffield into the most active city in the UK by 2020. The Run Routes project will also see the first pilot of the latest ‘near frequency’ technology to come out of The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine. This technology and supporting smart phone App is primed to help monitor participation and physical

SOUTH YORKSHIRE TRANSPORT UPDATE Bus Stops/Shelters At the moment South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive unfortunately doesn’t have a budget for bus shelter relocations / installations. All requests are logged and added to a list of shelter requests, which are reviewed and prioritised as and when funding becomes available. When capital funding is available we look to improve shelters where possible. An example of this is in the last three years as part of a key route project we have installed 88 new shelters along four Key Bus Routes in Woodhouse, Mosborough, Gleadless & Ecclesall. Customer Engagement SYPTE and Sheffield Bus Partnership encourage customer feedback and since the new network was introduced in November we made it even easier by introducing an email option in addition to the local Traveline number (01709 515151), by letter, completing a form at an Interchange or by having an online account. The majority of the network is operated commercially i.e. without funding. Where a complaint refers to a specific service delivery issue this is then passed to the relevant bus operator to comment. SYPTE monitor all issues arising and repetitive issues are raised as part of the Bus Partnership discussions. Forums such as Sheffield on the Move and further user groups are just not financially viable in the current economic climate.

Consultation One of the great benefits of the bus partnership is that the public get consulted regarding network changes, without the partnership customers would not be guaranteed to have the opportunity to have their say. With regards to the SYPTE Have Your Say consultation it was designed to understand individual priorities and was no means meant to set one group against another. We are legally not able to consult with under 16’s. We did however target parents, schools and community groups to ensure that the target audience was as representative as possible. We recognise that with any consultation there are limitations and but all the changes that were made as a result of the consultation are all publically available and demonstrate the impact customers comments had. Information There is information about local online inclusion at all customer service desks at Interchanges but the SYPTE budget does not allow for us to provide any further support than this. We understand how popular real time information is at bus stops and there are 136 on street electronic bus stop displays in Sheffield. Across South Yorkshire 95% of bus stops have a QR code and there is also an SMS service which provides live departure information.

activity across Sheffield and will be launched officially during the Move More Challenge in July this year. Cllr Leigh Bramall, Deputy Leader of the City Council said: “This is the first big outdoor recreation project we’ve announced since launching as The Outdoor City. It is evidence that this new way of working, of pooling resources and aligning ambitions so that they serve the whole of the city, really works. By being truly joined up we have the opportunity to engage with national bodies in relation to health and wellbeing, sport and outdoor pursuits. We are organised in our approach and clear about who we are and what we want for the city and we are being listened to. Having these run routes, innovating through advances in technology, connecting to the city’s physical activity strategy (Move More) and securing the ongoing support of England Athletics to help people ‘find their pace’ in Sheffield, are all big wins.”All of the routes will start from Sheffield’s parks or woodlands and vary in distance, gradient and difficulty. Tested by runners in the local communities, the routes will be clearly signposted, and simple to follow. From their activation in May 2016 the first eleven run routes will have supporting maps and useful information available through The Outdoor City website www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk .

FINAL CALL FOR PCUK CHARITY BIKE RIDE Sheffield Wednesday are on the lookout for Owls fans to represent the club and Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United in Europe on 3-5 June 2016 for a 145 mile cycle ride in conjunction with The Football League. The deadline for entrants to apply is this Friday 1 April so any Owls fans that want to take part will need to send their applications in this week. The charity ride will consist of two start locations to become the all-inclusive football to Amsterdam experience.

London or Yorkshire? There are two start locations: • Set off from Barnsley FC’s Oakwell Stadium – home of the Tykes since 1888. • Or kick off from the iconic Olympic Park in East London. Last year’s event was a sell out with more than 250 riders – including Owls fans Chris Heeley and Richard Stuart. They joined former international trio Terry Butcher, Matt Holland and Luther Blissett, together with Preston North End boss Simon Grayson. In 2015, the collective

Men United squad raised an impressive £350,000 for Prostate Cancer UK, an amount which will go a long way in helping men who are affected by the disease and crucially pave the way for new research and treatments. SHEFFIELD TO WELCOME INTERNATIONAL FLAVOUR Market Place will be returning to Fargate, Town Hall Square & Peace Gardens this April for another celebration of Culture! From Wednesday 27th April to Bank holiday Monday 2nd May 2016, Sheffield will be playing host to over 45 global traders who have travelled from all over the world to bring an array of tastes and unique crafts from their country of origin. Shoppers will be drawn to the exotic and delicious smells of the flavours and tastes from all corners of the globe as Much More Than Tapas will be bringing the best of Spanish and Mediterranean Tapas, Island Spice Grill will be offering Jamaican style jerk chicken whilst the Cheese Board will have a range of cheeses from a huge range of countries. Minot Markets will be bringing tasty traditional handmade French crepes, galettes and fresh Brussels waffles. The family company has been operating for 10 years and have many years of experience and knowledge which has been handed down. Originally from Nice in France the family create quality and freshly made crepes that attract many from all over the world with plenty of different

toppings including Nutella, banana, strawberries, nuts and more! The French traders also still use the traditional methods of creating and turning over the pancake via the speciality spatula which is a method from Brittany and perfect for the thin crepes! The family believe, in addition to the quality and unbelievable taste of their crepes, customers enjoy the experience as they consider watching the crepes being made is a show within itself! Market Place Manager, Matthew Hartwell expressed his excitement for returning to Sheffield: “Sheffield is fantastic for the Global Village Market and we always gain such a great response. Our traders love coming to Sheffield as such a friendly city with a fantastic atmosphere. There is going to be plenty for local shoppers to come and explore at the Global Village Market.” Along with the delicious food, there will also be a fantastic range of crafts and unique gifts. Afrika Unite will have a selection of Handmade Cutlery jewellery made from recycling old cutlery as well as animal figurines created out of recycled metal. The huge Dutch Flowers on Tour will be

returning to Sheffield with a huge range of flowers, plants and bulbs, all from Holland. Councillor Sioned-Mair Richards, cabinet member for Neighbourhoods at Sheffield City Council said: “Sheffield is a city rich in cultural diversity and events like these bring those cultures together. The market provides a great opportunity for people in Sheffield to enjoy flavours from across the globe and creates a real buzz in the city centre. Following their successful visit to Sheffield in March, we look forward to welcoming the

international traders back to the city and I encourage everyone to come along and for an authentic, continental experience.” If you’re not sure about something, just ask our welcoming traders who will be happy to help. This will certainly be the place to be this April!

The Global Village Market will be in Sheffield from: Wednesday to Saturday 09:00 to 17:30 Sunday 10:00 to 17.00 Bank Holiday Monday 10:00 to 17:00

GLASTONBURY ANNOUNCES FULL 2016 LINE-UP Glastonbury Preview by KT Evans

Running from 22nd – 26th June 2016 at Worthy Farm in Somerset, Glastonbury is the world’s most famous summer music festival. With over 100 stages and an array of activities to entertain you throughout the weekend, Glastonbury has just announced its first string of performers… and by Joe we’re all in for a treat! Speculation had it that global superstar Adele was set to headline the event, with these rumours being certified with the announcement this morning. Having reached stratospheric heights with her most recent record, “25,” the London beauty is currently undergoing her totally sold out UK headline tour, with tickets flying off the shelves in a matter of seconds. Guaranteed to be one of the most memorable performances in Glastonbury history, get a packet of Kleenex ready…we have a feeling this is going to be a weepy one. The mighty Muse have also been announced as Glastonbury headliners, having been popularised by the name “the best live band in the world.” It is difficult to put into worlds quite how spectacular Muse are whilst in the midst of a performance… from haunting vocals to a blinding light show, Glastonbury simply wouldn’t be complete without its rock injection. Sheffield legends Bring Me The Horizon also feature on this year’s Glastonbury line-up. With a collection of arena tour dates set for late this year, the five piece sold out Sheffield arena within a matter of minutes. With their most recent single “Follow You” once again an international success, this is the group’s only announced UK festival appearance of the year so far…and we sure as hell don’t want to miss it. Joining these, James Blake. Winner of The BBC Critics Choice Awards 2015, the Southern singer songwriter has quite frankly had a remarkable year.

THE GRAMMY AWARD WINNING GREGORY PORTER COMES TO SHEFFIELD CITY HALL Grammy Award-winning jazz/soul singing sensation Gregory Porter - is proud to announce a 16 date tour around the UK. The tour opens on 4th April at the Royal Albert Hall, London and makes a stop off at the Sheffield City Hall on Saturday 9th April. Gregory Porter, continues to perform to sell out audiences across the world and has achieved international recognition and acclaim with his Grammy winning selling album ‘Liquid Spirit’ In the UK alone, the album is certified gold and has had staying power in the Official Album Charts - for 80 weeks since release. On the back of a steaming set at Glastonbury and other recent shows - critics comment on Porter as a new ’king of jazz’ and a ‘leader of the pack’ – a performer of extraordinary prescence who has compared with the greatest of the greats, such as Joe Williams, Nat Cole, Donny Hathway and Marvin Gaye.

From dueting with Justin Bieber at this year’s BRIT Awards, to achieving a number one debut album, James Blake is reigniting everyone’s love for indie music. With hits to include “Hold Back The River” and “Let It Go,” with his trademark long locks and fedora hat, we have a sneaking suspicion he will fit right into the Glastonbury vibe. The Last Shadow Puppets also make an appearance on Glastonbury 2016’s line-up. The love child of Arctic Monkey’s frontman Alex Turner and singer songwriter Miles Kane, it has been over ten years since the release of their one and only album, “The Age Of The Understatement.” We’ve been teased with a number of current singles, however will the two-piece reveal more music before their hugely anticipated performance? You’ll all just have to bloody wait and see then won’t you! Also announced; Ellie Goulding, Disclosure, Foals, Beck, The 1975, New Order, Earth, Wind & Fire, Madness, Wolf Alice, Band Of Horses, Skepta, LCD Sound System, Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Jess Glynne, Years and Years, Richard Hawley, ZZ Top, Grimes, Aluna George, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Two Door Cinema Club and many many more. Glastonbury 2016 has already sold-out, however fear not as there are a number of ways you can still get a ticket. You need to register on www. glastonburyfestivals.co.uk website in order to be a part of the re-sale ticket draw, which is expected to occur between 1st – 16th April. These tickets are from previous purchasers who can no longer attend the festival. Please note that this is run through the Glastonbury website only. Alternatively, you could sign up for a volunteers role throughout one of the many sponsors of the festival, with Oxfam being a particular favourite. Watch this space as next week we will give you tonnes more information regarding volunteering at some of the UK’s biggest and best festivals.

They don’t come much cooler that Gregory Porter. Don’t miss out on this date! Tickets for Gregory Porter (subject to booking fees) are available from Sheffield City Hall box office on 0114 2789 789, at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk or in person.

YES BRING THEIR EUROPEAN TOUR TO SHEFFIELD Grammy award-winning rock giants, YES, announce double-album 2016 Spring tour. On this tour, fans can look forward to a unique YES experience; the band will perform two of its iconic albums in their entirety, Fragile and, for the first time ever, Drama, in addition to classic YES tracks. Legendary progressive rock band, YES, will have their 2016 UK-European tour kicking off 27 April 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland and wrapping up 2 June 2016 in Bari, Italy. They will touch down in the dramatic setting of Sheffield City Hall’s Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall on Tuesday, 3rd May 2016. YES will delight audiences with tracks from two of its most influential albums. Fans will hear long-time favorites, including ‘Roundabout’, ‘Long Distance Runaround’, ‘Heart of the Sunrise’, ‘Machine Messiah’, ‘Into the Lens’, ‘Tempus Fugit’,” and more. In addition, YES will perform all tracks in the order they appear on their corresponding studio album. “This is a first for us,” said YES guitarist, Steve Howe. “This is the first time we’ll be performing Drama in its entirety. In fact, most of the Drama songs haven’t been performed in some 30 years.” YES drummer, Alan White, adds, “Drama’s a great album, and we decided it’s long past due to bring its life and energy back to the forefront. We think the fans will love hearing Fragile and Drama in their entirety, and we certainly look forward to performing them.” The 2016 tour marks a return for YES after the phenomenal success of their sell-out 2014 triplealbum UK tour. The demand for tickets exceeded all expectations; YES are delighted to be able to give their fans this opportunity to see them once again performing live. This double-album tour will also see YES perform a number of their seminal tracks, ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’, ‘Starship Trooper’ and more. Tickets for YES (subject to booking fees) at Sheffield City Hall will be available online at www. sheffieldcityhall.co.uk, over the phone on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.

ROAD SAFETY BODY WANTS CLOCK CHANGE Many drivers’ lives could be saved if Britain trialled Single/Double Summer Time (SDST), a leading road safety charity claims. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ (RoSPA) call comes after last weekend’s clock change. RoSPA believes a change in the traditional system could save lives. It says accidents would be reduced by the number of extra daylight evening hours that SDST would bring. The Government’s own statistics suggest that the charity may have a case. They show that fewer motorists die on the roads after the clocks go forward in spring. They also find that there are more pedestrian road fatalities after Britain’s clock are set back for winter. The most recent figures, for 2014, show that there

are nearly a third more pedestrian accidents in the month before the clocks are put back than the month after. The tally jumped 32.3% from 1,878 in September to 2,486 in November. Of these, 66 people were killed in November, as opposed to 29 in September. There were 543 serious injuries in November, compared to September’s 430. The RoSPA’s chief executive Tom Mullarkey says his charity’s proposal has so far failed to attract political support. He says that accidents were greatly reduced during a GMT+1 trial across 1968-71. Mr Mullarkey wants a new trial to indicate to the Government just how many lives can be saved and accidents prevented.

"The message to the Government has to be that local roads are just as important as rail services and the strategic road network, as their condition limits the effectiveness of the rest of the country's transport infrastructure." The Local Government Association's transport

spokesman, Peter Box, says budget cuts mean councils are only able to patch up, rather than properly repair, damaged roads. He predicts the crisis will worsen unless the condition of roads is made a national priority.

‘FIXING ROADS WOULD COST NEARLY £12BN’ Getting the nation's roads back up to scratch would cost nearly £12 billion, a new report claims. The costly assessment is detailed in the Asphalt Industry Alliance's Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey. The RAC says although disappointing, the report's findings are "not surprising". It is calling on the Government to do more to improve the condition of local roads. The ALARM report says it will cost £11.8 billion to complete the backlog of required repairs and get roads in England and Wales back into a reasonable condition. Despite 2.2 million potholes being filled over the last 12 months, it adds, the time that work will take has risen from 13 years to 14 since this time in 2015. The report also estimates that on average it will be 67 years before a "non-principal" road gets resurfaced. Commenting on the report, David Bizley, the RAC's chief engineer, says: "These findings are disappointing, but unfortunately not surprising. While around £1 billion a year has been allocated by central government for local roads in England between now and 2020, their condition appears to be getting worse rather than better. "While the Government's Road Investment Strategy is ensuring the future 'fitness-for-purpose' of the strategic road network in England there is a very real danger that local roads will suffer ongoing decline through insufficient investment and no long-term strategy to improve them. What use would it be having excellent motorways, major roads, railways, ports and airports if, when getting to or from them, you are faced with pothole-ridden, crumbling local roads where, of course, all journeys start and finish?

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve had some new products come through from Sonik Sports, and although I’ve not had chance to try all of them thoroughly, the new Sonik Sports S3 Specialist range have certainly caught my eye. You may know I’ve been using Sonik rods for almost three years now, ever since I got hold of a pair of SK3 Twin Tips which I have used for much of my fishing across both rivers and stillwaters. I’ve caught fish to 32lb on them, still love them, and consider them perhaps (until now) the most versatile rod I’ve used, but I’m now inclined to retire them, and with good reason… I don’t go in for flashy decals and fancy extras, much preferring a rod that will give me a solution for most angling situations, one which will allow many anglers to use one rod system (and I’ll call it that if I may) which will give a multitude of options without breaking the bank. This particular rod is part of the new Sonik S3 range, but covers many situations the specialist coarse angler may encounter. The complete collection offers something for all, across the full specialist fish spectrum, including a 12’ 1.5lb rod, a 12’ 1.75lb Twin Tip, a 12’ 2.25lb Twin Tip, and finally, a 12’ 1.5/1.75/2lb Tri-Tip, with prices ranging from £89.99-119.99. The 12’ 1.75lb test curve Twin Tip is just that. Supplied with a push-in quivertip section, offering 2, 3 and 4oz tips, or an Avon style top section, I’ve used this rod for commercial carp, long distance bream fishing, and a few sessions on the river, and it’s performed superbly well. I particularly like cork handled rods, and white tip sections whilst fishing the ‘tip, and this has both, and the carbon blank has plenty of power low down when necessary, but is still soft enough through the

LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

The changing of the clocks is often the starting pistol for the business end of the season, but we have certainly gone a few days early this year. Firstly, midweek we had the first League Cup Semi-Final and North Gawber Colliery in the S&HCFA Senior Cup Quarter-Finals, and on the weekend a complete league fixture list. On a sombre note, all teams observed a minute’s silence prior to kick-off on Saturday in memory of Handsworth Parramore Club Secretary David Wragg. League Cup Semi-Final Division Two’s Grimethorpe Sports shocked defending Premier Division Champions Swinton Athletic to reach the League Cup Final. Goals from Jack Foster (2) and Tony Bennett gave Grimethorpe a 3-1 win at Sandy Lane. Grimethorpe booked themselves in the S&HCFA Association Cup just a week over also. S&HCFA Senior Cup Quarter-Final North Gawber Colliery took on Shaw Lane Aquaforce in the Senior Cup Quarter-finals in Thursday at Sheerien Park. North Gawber were not willing to just lie down against the Northern League First Division South high-flyers taking a 1-0 lead. Sadly, North Gawber ended up losing 2-1, but they will take heart from their deep run in the competition. Premier Division Frecheville quickly ended a run of two game without a win to extend their lead at the top of the Premier Division to nine points. They were comfortable 3-0 winners over Handsworth Parramore Reserves at Oliver’s Mount. Joe Dungworth scored four times for Swinton Athletic, as they beat Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves at Mexborough Athletic Ground, and put aside their disappointment of their League Cup Semi-Final defeat. Swinton remain in third place, 14 points off the pace, but with three games in hand. Goals from Jake Schofield, Peter Hobson, Adam Dewsnap and Tim Council helped AFC Penistone Church to a 4-0 win over North Gawber Colliery at the Memorial Ground. Athersley Recreation Reserves followed-up

middle and tip sections to absorb any powerful lunges when fish are at the net. The reel seat is of the standard screw winch fitting, and the reel is securely attached to the rod by means of an EVA screw down section which is easy to use with cold, wet hands. The blank is finished in an understated matt black with a small grey Sonik graphic, the SIC guides are fully lined, and well spaced to give a pleasing curve when playing fish, and can certainly be considered a true ‘all-round’ rod system. These rods are sure to be of interest to the angler who enjoys angling for big fish, but likes to watch the pennies too! My latest visit to the bank saw me use the S3 whilst fishing for bream and skimmers (yes, I am he who fishes for bream) at a Cheshire venue. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t heaving packed feeders at the horizon, more a gentle lob to around seventy yards, before tracking back as close as fifteen yards as the fish moved around, and I used a variety of open end and method feeders to stay in touch as the fish started to get finicky and bites became more delicate. The 2oz tip I selected allowed me to see bites all day long, and after counting up the number of fish caught, I’d estimate I netted around 100lb of fish with only an odd quiet spell to upset things. It was a good session, especially when compared with an angler sitting four pegs above me who packed up after four hours, having only seen three bites. Despite me sharing exactly what I was doing, I had fish in front of me, he, unfortunately, did not, (and that was the only difference) and he was somewhat despondent when he came for a chat only to see my tip whip around…. again! Tight lines…

back-to-back draws with Handsworth Parramore Reserves and Frecheville, with a 1-0 away win over Oughtibridge WMFC. Bottom side Wickersley FC picked up their first point since September, as they held Jubilee Sports to a 1-1 draw at Chaucer School. Division One Denaby Main suffered only their second loss of the season, losing to Caribbean Sports 2-0 at the Caribbean Sports Club. The win takes Caribbean two points clear of Denaby and into second place. In a dramatic game at Silkstone Recreation Ground, four goals from Ainsley Finney and a hat-trick from Steve Ellor gave league leaders Denaby United a 7-3 victory over Silkstone United. Denaby United remain two points clear at the top, but second placed Caribbean have played a game more. Denaby Main are five points back from Denaby United and have played one game less than them. Denaby United host Caribbean Sports next Saturday. Goals from Daryl Smith, Simon Chadburn (2), Ryan Hollsworth (3) and Luke Whitfield (2) gave Wombwell Main a big 8-1 home win over Kingstone United. Wombwell are in fourth, nine points off the lead with five games spare. Fifth placed AFC Dronfield were also big winners, beating Byron House 6-1 at Norton Playing Fields. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 made it four wins from five, with a 3-1 away win over Davy FC, who were previously three games unbeaten. Sheffield Bankers climbed into the top half of the table, with a comfortable 4-1 win over High Green Villa at Ferrar’s Road.

TIME FOR COOL HEADS SAYS MILLERS CAPTAIN Rotherham United skipper Kirk Broadfoot has called on his Millers side to keep their cool as they enter the make-or-break stages of their Championship campaign. Following the March international break, the Millers face three games in seven days, with the weekend’s hosting of Leeds United soon followed by crunch trips to fellow relegation rivals Bristol City and Milton Keynes Dons. The nerve-jangling final weeks of the season are likely to have

more twists and turns for all those of a ‘Red and White’ persuasion, but the Scottish international insists his side must keep their nerve if they are to maintain their Championship status. “It’s important we don’t get too high when we win and not too low after a defeat,” Broadfoot warned. “There are still plenty of points to play for and there will be a lot of ups and downs. “You have to go into every game with a game plan and

make sure it works.” Broadfoot has been given the responsibility of leading the Millers in recent weeks, putting in a string of consistent displays which have brought many plaudits from coaching staff and supporters alike. With the final straight of the Championship season approaching, the former Rangers ace isn’t getting carried away, as he looks to lead the Millers to survival in the second tier for the second consecutive season. “It’s always good when you get

credit but I just get on with my job,” Broadfoot said modestly. “I take each game as it comes and I give my all. That’s all I can do and if I’m helping the team, then I’m doing my job. “We have good centre-halves at the club and any one of them can come in and do a job for us, which is great to see.” The Millers take on Leeds United this Saturday at AESSEAL New York Stadium, kick off 3pm.

LATE BLACKPOOL GOAL SINKS ROVERS Rovers had very little time to recover from Friday’s 4-1 defeat away to Colchester and that defeat made today’s match even more important. Following the defeat on Good Friday Darren Ferguson made a number of changes to his side. Andy Williams was bought back into the side, as was Riccardo Calder and Mitchell Lund. 17 year old Will Longbottom was also named on the bench after impressing in the Development side this season. Rovers started the game well and pressured the Blackpool defence. Andy Williams and Gary McSheffrey linked up well going forward before Harry Middleton hit one from 25 yards that went just wide. Remi Matthews was however called into action and made a wonderful save as he got down low to stop a shot from ten yards. There were huge shouts for handball all around the Keepmoat as Williams pressure the defender. As the ball flicked up it caught him on the hand but the referee waved play on resulting in boos around the ground. Despite enjoying possession, luck wasn’t going Rovers way and on the stroke of half time a corner resulted in a crazy goal-

mouth scramble. The ball was inches away from crossing the line, Lund and Williams both tried but Blackpool put bodies on the goal line and somehow cleared. It was end to end and the last chance of the half fell to the visitors but Matthews again made a terrific reaction save. As Mark Cullen broke through one on one, the Norwich loanee got down quickly to deny him. Rovers continued to be the better side but Blackpool did have chances on the break. Craig Alcock put in a man of the match performance and threw everything at it. He was there to deny the visitors the opener and clear Hingham’s looping header off the line after Matthews was beaten. Cameron Stewart and Nathan Tyson were introduced to the game and livened the second half up. Wolves loanee Tommy Rowe came within inches of giving Rovers a deserved lead when he hit a rocket at goal with his left foot. With Doyle well beaten everyone could only watch as it bounced down on the goal line off the underside of the bar. Tyson and Middleton both had chances and forced Doyle into saves as they shot from the edge of the area but in the 87th minute totally against the run of

play Blackpool took the lead in horrid fashion. Mark Cullen found himself in the box and scuffed a horrible shot at goal. Andy Butler knew very little about it but the ball deflected off him and looped

over Matthews who could do nothing. Rovers tried to draw level but it wasn’t to be and despite an improved performance, were unable to take anything from the game.

CANARIES KEEPERS JOINS ROVERS

Remi Matthews has joined Rovers until the end of the season. Following the signing of Gary McSheffrey from Scunthorpe United, goalkeeper Remi Matthews has also joined Darren Ferguson’s side from Premier League Norwich City on loan until the end of the season. Born in Gorleston-On-Sea, Norfolk, 22 year old Matthews began his career with Norwich City Academy at just 10 years old. He has had two loan

spells at Burton Albion and has recently signed a new two year contract with Norwich. Remi Said: “I knew straight away I wanted to come here. I wanted to play for Darren Ferguson, he’s a big name in football with a good reputation. “I can see straight away that he has faith in me, and that’s a great opportunity for me on the field as well as to work along side him.”

THE GREATEST PLAYER NEVER TO PLAY FOR ENGLAND? To get our readers well and truly in the mood for the forthcoming European Championships in June, John Webster commences a ten part special exploring the best players who probably should, but actually never did, represent their country. At the end of the series we

will put it to you, The Mercury reader, to give a definitive vote on the subject and decide who was the best player never to play for England. All voters will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win an England goody bag to enhance their viewing experience this summer.

NO. 3 STEVE OGRIZOVIC

their money’s worth is an understatement. Ogrizovic went on to play a club record 601 games for the Sky Blues and helped them lift the FA Cup in 1987. It was, and remains the clubs only major trophy. Coventry City were in the top flight of English football for the entirety of Ogrizovic’s career. His goalkeeping heroics were a major feature of a club so often involved in a relegation dog-fight, he was never afraid to put himself where it hurt, and had the nose to prove it. It speaks volumes that only a year after his retirement, the club were finally relegated from the Premier League. Due his fine goal-keeping performances, Oggy was often considered for selection by England managers like Bobby Robson and Graham Taylor but was never selected for the full squad. It does raise the question though, that had he played for a more fashionable club, would it have been a different story?

Born in Mansfield in 1957, the 6ft 4in goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic is regarded by many to be the greatest English goalkeeper never to have a won a full cap. He is also one of only four players to have played top-flight football in four different decades. Ogrizovic, affectionately known as Oggy, started his career at Chesterfield. His talent must have been obvious at an early age as he was signed by Liverpool at the age of twenty as back-up to the brilliant Ray Clemence. His chances of replacing the England international were slim and Oggy left Anfield with only four appearances to his name. The giant goalkeeper moved to Shrewsbury where he was first choice between the sticks over a three-year period. He then transferred to Coventry City, signing in 1984 for £72,500 and to say that the club got

BLADES NEWS2015/16 ADKINS ALEX VERDICT Nigel Adkins insisted it was a case of job done following a thrilling Good Friday victory over Crewe Alexandra at Bramall Lane. Goals from Che Adams and Ryan Flynn put the Blades in charge, before efforts from David Fox and Harry Davis stunned the hosts, only for Billy Sharp to head home the winner from Louis Reed’s cross three minutes from time. And Adkins was determined to focus on the positives speaking in the aftermath of the success. He remarked: “The firsthalf performance was exhilarating at times, if we had been ruthless in front of goal we would have had the game won before the break. “We were right at and dominated. So let’s focus on that, rather than negatives of the secondhalf. “Yes, we gave away two poor goals and we need

to defend much better, but at 2-2 we could have caved in and lost. “But we didn’t, with a lot of youngsters out there, we dug in and showed that grit and resilience required to grind out the victory we needed and you always know Billy (Sharp) will pop up with big goals. “We needed three points, we got them, now we

move on to the next challenge at Southend on Wednesday. The Gaffer, who named five teenage Academy graduates on the bench against the Alex, concluded by praising the younger members of his squad. He remarked: “The youngsters here have a real desire and hunger to learn and improve and

although they will make mistakes they are out there in the thick of the action. “The way Whiteman and Reed combined for the winning goal was superb and all these players will only get better the more they play. “We now have a clear pathway for them and I am excited for the future.”

CRUNCH TIME FOR THE BLADES’ HOPES By Andrew Smith

John Brayford has made it clear that the Blades are still very much in the race for a play-off space. Speaking after Friday’s win against Crewe Alexandra, Brayford said: “(It’s) eight games to go, (we’ve) just got to try and win as many as we can.” Brayford will hope the Blades can carry Friday’s momentum into the game away at Southend United. This article was written before Wednesday’s fixture, but Brayford and the rest of the team will certainly be aiming for all three points. Brayford added: “It’s crunch time now, we’ve got to try and get eight out of eight.” If the Blades do win away at Southend, they will go to within six points of the play-off spots. It will be no easy task to make up such a point gap, but Adkins will hope his men can deliver when it counts. Harrison McGahey, who won plaudits from the Bramall Lane faithful after an accomplished performance, also set his sights on a rush to the play-offs. Speaking after the Good Friday fixture, the 20-year-old defender said: “We need to keep winning,

keep the spirit high in the camp.” The defender will hope that he can keep his spot in the side for the all-important run in. With Alex Baptiste out with injury, and Neill Collins enjoying the Florida sunshine, there may well be a more permanent spot for the young central defender.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 DEFENDING FROM LEES CROWNED AS OWLS PLAYER OF THE MONTH THE FRONT Wednesday head to Huddersfield on Saturday with a proud defensive record in the recent weeks before the international break. The Owls have conceded just one goal in the past five Championship outings which have included tough fixtures away at Hull and Brighton and emphatic wins over Nottingham Forest and Charlton. Incidentally, Wednesday have also kept clean sheets on their last four visits to The John Smith’s Stadium and inflicted a 3-1 defeat on the Terriers earlier this season at Hillsborough. On the defensive resilient run, Carlos Carvalhal has attributed praise to the whole team and said: “There are two ways to keep a clean sheet. You can close your goal and defend but that is hard to do in this competition as all the teams play compact and your options to close the goal is very hard. “Our way is to be positive, try to create goals and do a very strong, organised reaction when we miss the ball.

“We want all the team to try and win the ball back and create damage to the other team. “At the same time, you must be balanced and be ready to block the other team’s key players. We

play to score goals but, at the same time, we react quickly when we lose the ball. “All the time the team is balanced without the ball to block the attacks of the opponents.”

Tom Lees has been voted as the Owls’ Player of the Month for March. The commanding stopper has won the swfc.co.uk award with over 30% of the fans’ vote. Lees’ solid performances at the heart of the defence have been a major contributing factor in Wednesday maintaining their top six berth, heading into the home straight. During March, Lees was an ever-present for Wednesday’s four fixtures which saw the club register three clean sheets.

To cap off a productive end to March, Lees scored his third goal of the season in the Owls’ 3-0 home win over Charlton last week. In second place in the
