After the sad passing of legendary comedian Ronnie Corbett last week at the age of 85 here is a small tribute with some of his greatest jokes... A man was marooned on a desert island. One day a beautiful woman arrives in a wet suit. ‘When did you last have a smoke?’ she asks. ‘Five years ago.’ So she gets out a cigar and he smokes it. She unzips her wet suit a bit and says, ‘When did you last have a drink?’ He said, ‘Five years ago.’ So she gets out a bottle of Scotch and he has a drink. Then she unzips her wet suit a bit more and says, ‘And when was the last time you played around?’ He looks at her in amazement and says: ‘You’re not telling me you’ve got a set of golf clubs in there?’ A cement mixer collided with a prison van on the Kingston by-pass. Motorists are asked to be on the look-out for 16 hardened criminals. We will be talking to an out of work contortionist who says he can no longer make ends meet. All those who believe in psychokinesis raise my right hand. For some time, my wife’s had this ridiculous idea that I’m playing too much golf. Actually, it came to a head at about 11.30 last night. She suddenly shouted at me: “Golf, golf, golf. All you ever think about is bloody golf!”. And I’ll be honest, it frightened the life out of me. I mean, you don’t expect to meet somebody on the 14th green at that time of night. West Mercia police announced tonight that they wish to interview a man wearing high heels and frilly knickers, but the chief constable said they must wear their normal uniforms.
After a series of crimes in the Glasgow area, Chief Inspector McTavish has announced that he is looking for a man with one eye. If he doesn’t find him, he’s going to use both eyes.

LOCAL AWARD WINNING SHOW APPEARING AT CITY HALL
Sheffield Production company, Groovy Gazza Productions have landed a date in their home town at the City Hall Ballroom. Co Producers Gary Birtles and Lorrie Brown have been touring their show ‘A Salute to the 1940s’ for the last 7 yrs around the country. Gary says: “We are so excited to be playing the City Hall, we have been trying to get into one of the Sheffield main venues for years and finally we have a date.” The show featuring award winning Lorrie Brown as Vera Lynn, will be at the venue on Apr 12th for a midweek matinee. Lorrie was in the news last year after meeting her idol Dame Vera after being voted a UK No.1 tribute. Lorrie says: “We can’t wait, we've
been performing the show in several venues around the region including the Peace Gardens, hotels and even garden centres, but to finally be playing the City Hall is really exciting. In the show Lorrie performs part of her tribute act as Vera Lynn and also a portrayal of WW1 star Marie Lloyd. “The two characters couldn’t be more different”, says Lorrie “I really enjoy playing both roles because the songs of Vera Lynn are beautiful and melodic and in contrast Marie Lloyds are down to earth and full of character.” Lorrie also had some exciting news a few months ago when Dame Vera endorsed the show. Lorrie says, “This means so much to us, for Dame Vera to endorse the show is like a huge stamp of approval”.
Also in the show will be tributes to George Formby, Gracie Fields, The Andrews Sisters, G.I. Frank Sinatra and a special duet from George and Frank performing Whispering Grass from ‘It Aint Half Hot Mum’. “It is such a funny sketch” says Gary, “We have a great cast who have been working together for 4yrs now and we have all developed a real chemistry on stage.” Gary is Mr Braithwaite, the air raid warden who keeps everybody in line as well as a portrayal of the cheeky chappie himself Max Miler.
The show is on Apr 12th with a 2pm start. Tickets are £16.50 and available from the City Hall box office on 0114 2 789 789

NEW HOME FOR TINSLEY LIBRARY WINCOBANK Stroke OPENS IT DOORS Association A new base has been found for a local library in Sheffield with facilities for book lovers, computer users, children and community groups. The Tinsley Forum, on Bawtry Road, will house the future Tinsley Library service just along the road from the previous base. Sheffield City Council came out of this last month when its lease on the building ended. The library is also changing from a council-run service to one managed and run by volunteers. This already happens in fifteen other branches after Government cuts meant the council could no longer afford to run them all. The authority continues to run the Central Lending Library, 11 branches across the city and the Home Library Service. Graham Whitfield from the Tinsley Forum said: “We’re really pleased to be able to offer a new base for Tinsley library as this will give local people access to a volunteer led library service within the community at this time.”Local volunteers have already come forward to run the future library service. The council is now working with them and the Tinsley Forum before plans are firmed up and a take-over date is confirmed. Local volunteer Zahira Naz said: “It’s great to see the library will be reopening after all the work the volunteers in Tinsley have put into this idea.”
Councillor Sioned-Mair Richards said: “I’m delighted that Tinsley Library will have a permanent home and even better that it’s just along the road from the old one. It’s great that the community has come together to make this happen and I want to thank everyone involved for all their hard work on this, and for their future support. We’re hoping the new service is up and running quickly, and that people will enjoy the new facilities.” A temporary book drop off and collection point is available for library users at Tinsley Forum. Local visits by the council’s Little Library service for children are also taking place. Anyone interested in helping to run Tinsley’s future library service should contact Darrell Porter the Council’s Library Volunteer Co-ordinator on 0114 273 4254.

SHEFFIELD BUSINESS CENTRES GIVE THE BIG TOP A BIG HELPING HAND
Two Sheffield industrial parks are proud to be sponsoring a very special circus which rolls into town soon. Bizspace’s Baltic Works on Effingham Road and Cricket Inn Industrial Estate on Derwent Street, have donated tickets for vulnerable children and their families to attend Circus Starr. The big top comes to Don Valley Bowl on 29 April. It boasts a world class troupe of artistes including internationally acclaimed
Mexican clown Chico Rico and the gravity defying El Moussati troupe with their jaw-dropping act on the “Wheel of Death”. Now in its 29th year, Circus Starr is dedicated to bringing the magic of the circus to vulnerable children. It asks for the support of local businesses throughout its UK tour, and allocates the free tickets which are donated to children and their families through community groups. Manager of the two
business centres, Connor Johnson, commented: “We are delighted to lend our support to a fantastic project that offers children from the Sheffield area a wonderful experience to remember for the rest of their lives.” Back by popular demand on this year’s tour will be the acrobatic high jinks of the Serik brothers on Chinese pole and straps. Other highlights include the captivating balance and dexterity of Las Chicas Morales
on Rolling Globes and aerial contortionist Romy Bauer performs an enchanting act performed in a suspended giant globe high in the Big Top. Neville Wilson, one of Circus Starr’s directors, said: “We’re really grateful to Bizspace and all our sponsors who help us make a difference to young people and their families. We work hard to put on a spectacular and unforgettable show and it’s down to local businesses to help as many people as possible enjoy the magic of the big top.” Sales and marketing director at Bizspace, Emma Long, added: “We aim to support the
communities around our business centres and industrial parks as much as possible. Circus Starr is such a unique project and we’re proud to lend a hand to bring enjoyment to so many families.”
Bizspace specialises in helping start-ups and small businesses launch and develop, offering affordable pricing and a simple, flexible licence agreement. For more information visitwww. bizspace.co.uk.

PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP WITH GUYS AND DOLLS AT THE LYCEUM THEATRE Direct from the West End, the Olivier Award nominated Chichester Festival Theatre production Guys and Dolls heads to the Lyceum Theatre from Tuesday 19 – Sataurday 23 April with a cast including TV and stage stars Richard Fleeshman and Maxwell Caulfield and West End leading ladies Louise Dearman and Anna O’Byrne. Nathan Detroit is desperate: he needs money for an illegal dice game, and he needs it fast. Not to
mention a 14-year engagement with nightclub singer Miss Adelaide, whose patience is finally running out. Enter notorious gambler Sky Masterson, a guy who can never turn down a bet, and straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown, a doll with a heart of ice. Nathan’s wager is that Sky has to romance Sarah by taking her to Havana for dinner and in return he’ll provide a dozen ‘sinners’ for Sarah’s mission. Surely this is one bet Nathan absolutely can't lose? Richard Fleeshman, familiar to audiences from his appearances in Coronation Street, Call The Midwife and Ghost the Musical, plays Sky Masterson, with Maxwell Caulfield (Grease 2, Emmerdale, The Colbys) as Nathan Detroit, Louise Dearman (Wicked, Evita) as Adelaide and Anna O’Byrne (Love Never Dies) as Sarah Brown. A joyous and vibrant celebration of Prohibition-
era New York, Guys and Dolls first premiered on Broadway in 1950 and captured the optimism and energy of post-World War Two America. This hugely popular and multi award-winning musical, based on the colourful stories by American journalist Damon Runyon renowned for his vivid fictional depictions of the gamblers, hustlers and nightclub singers of New York, features some of Broadway’s greatest musical numbers including My Time of Day, Luck be a Lady and the show-stopping Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat. Guys and Dolls is at the Lyceum Theatre from Tuesday 19 – Saturday 23 April. Tickets can be purchased from Sheffield Theatres’ Box Office in-person, by phone on 0114 249 6000 or online at sheffieldtheatres.co.uk and are priced from £31.00 – £43.00 (a transaction fee of £1.50 (£1.00 online) applies to all bookings made at the Box Office, excluding cash). SILVER FOX SUCCESSFULLY BACK IN STOCKSBRIDGE Matt Saich, proprietor of the re-opened Silver Fox pub/ restaurant at Stocksbridge, would like to thank his new team for all their help with the highly successful re-launch last Saturday. After his recruitment ad appeared in The Mercury, Matt and Chef Eduardo were delighted with the high response and quality of applicants. First to apply and an enthusiastic member of staff is Maddie, who along with Tom, Jiorden, Michelle and Beth have created a great team spirit. Matt’s mum Doreen completed the team at last weekends’ opening which could hardly have been any busier.
Matt says “We were absolutely delighted that so many customers visited from far and wide. We
even had some Mexican diners and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience!”

LIVING LIFE ON A HIGH WIRE!! Do you sometimes feel like you are spinning too many plates and walking on a narrow tightrope? Well that is just what 40 members of MOS are practising hard to perfect right now. The famous Manor Operatic Society of Sheffield, renowned for putting on top class productions have now taken on the fantastic, exciting, bright circus musical ‘Barnum’ , The Greatest Show on Earth,
which they will be presenting live at the City Hall Sheffield in May and the whole company have spent hours perfecting circus skills for the show. Uni-cycling, ball-walking, juggling, back flipping, plate spinning are just a few of the things you will see during this spectacle of a musical not to mention a long walk from one side of the massive City Hall stage to the other on a high tight-rope. This musical, which all the family will love is at the City Hall, Sheffield from 11th – 14th May 2016 and tickets are selling like ‘hot cakes.’ To book for this exciting extravaganza please call the City Hall booking office 0114 2789789 or the MOS booking line 01709 365108 or visit www. sheffieldcityhall.co.uk
70TH ANNUAL CO-OPERATIVE CHARITY FESTIVAL COMES TO THE CIVIC The Civic hosts a special evening session on Wednesday 20 April to celebrate 70 years of the Co-operative Barnsley Youth Music & Drama Festival. Taking place at Emmanuel Church from Monday 18 April to Friday 22 April, the week-long annual festival showcases the talents of hundreds of young drama and music enthusiasts from Barnsley and across Yorkshire, in an array of classes for individuals, duos, quartets and ensembles to larger groups of instrumentalists and choirs. The 70th Co-operative Youth Music & Drama Festival will conclude with ‘A Grand Finale Concert’ featuring all the Class Winners on the Friday evening at The Church, and a special evening session will be held The Civic on Wednesday 20 April. Angela Dawson, Secretary from the Co-operative Barnsley Youth Music & Drama Festival said: “We appreciate how difficult it is to bring the arts into schools, and the difficulties Music Services have in encouraging schools to be a part of this exciting and essential part of youth learning and discovery in the Arts. As part of our growing relationship with Barnsley Hub and Barnsley Music Services we have agreed to bring part of our festival into The Civic; with the goodwill of Alex Francis (Service Development Officer from Barnsley Music Service) and The Civic. We are really looking forward to an excellent evening of performances all adjudicated by a professional adjudicator who will give constructive feedback to support both performers and teachers alike.” The Co-operative Barnsley Youth Music & Drama
Festival at The Civic will include a performance by Barnsley Junior Band as part of the BBC Ten Piece Project. Angela explains “This year we have introduced special classes to incorporate the BBC Ten Pieces Project, as well as reviewing many of our individual and group classes to make Drama and Music accessible for all.” The BBC Ten Piece Project aims to open up the world of classical music to children and inspire them to develop their own creative responses to ten pieces of music through composition, dance or digital art. Since its inception the Barnsley Youth Music and Drama Festival has been supported by the Cooperative movement and gained Charitable Status in 2006. The Festival has been independently organised by a voluntary Festival Committee since 2005 and is part of the Barnsley Music Education Hub. Angela Dawson concludes: “Our long-term expectations is to continue our relationship with the Barnsley Hub and encourage more young talent in the Barnsley schools to enter our festival. This year we have an exceptionally high number of entries throughout the week, giving the people of Barnsley an excellent week of drama and music competitions from youngsters 3 - 20 years of age.” Daily spectator tickets are available on the door from £2.50 - £5 each and children under 14 go free (if accompanied by an adult). For more information visit www.barnsleycymdfestival.co.uk or contact Festival chairman, Mrs Margaret Venables on 01126 752576 / info@barnsleycymdfestival.co.uk

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL PUTS OUT CALL TO EMERGING TALENT FOR 2016 EVENT Organisers of Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival have begun their search for the UK’s best breaking talent, and have opened the artist application process for the forthcoming festival, which is set to return for its eighth instalment from 22 to 24 July. In its ongoing mission to showcase the country’s breaking bands and artists, the UK’s biggest metropolitan music festival is looking to fill 15 slots across a wide range of official festival venues and stages. Hopefuls have until 29 April to submit their details via Tramlines’ page at gigmit.com, with the winning entries being chosen by a mix of festival organisers, BBC Introducing presenters and influential music industry figures. Tramlines transforms Sheffield city centre into a huge festival site, taking the reins on four outdoor spaces and 15 venues with a bill which showcases a diverse range of established names and brand-new artists, and attracting approximately 100,000 people every year. This year’s bill delivers a genre-defying mix of talent, including Dizzee Rascal, Jurassic 5, Kelis, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Mystery Jets, Gaz Coombes, Dawn Penn, Field Music, Young Fathers, Toddla T, Goldie MBE, Little Simz, Norman Jay MBE, Hinds, My Nu Leng, C Duncan, Randall, Meilyr Jones, Skream, K.O.G and The Zongo

Brigade, and many more. Tramlines has a long history of showcasing breaking acts before they hit the big time, with Blossoms, Toddla T, The XX, George Ezra, Charli XCX and Alt-J just a few of the artists who’ve gone on from early shows at the festival to bag chart-topping singles and sell-out shows. Having played at some of the festival’s smallest venues just a few short years ago, indie four-piece Catfish and the Bottlemen return for 2016 as Sunday night headliners on the huge outdoor Main Stage. As the band themselves said: “We’re absolutely buzzing to be headlining Tramlines this year. We remember it like it was yesterday. The last times, we were in Frog & Parrot with Little Comets or in Soyo with the Broken Hands lads watching Kieran Gallagher crowd-surfing and pulling the chandeliers down. It’s a real honour to be headlining.” The panel of judges selecting bands to play at Tramlines this year include, the festival’s Head of Programming, Kate Hewett and - ensuring that a wide portion of UK talent is represented - presenters from BBC Introducing Kent, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, York, and of course Sheffield. Band applications are now open until Friday 29 April. Applicants should head to Gigmit.com to fill out an application using the following link https:// www.gigmit.com/gigs/tramlines-festival-festival-intramlines-festival-sheffield-4289 Tickets for Tramlines Festival 2016 are on sale and, as ever, remain seriously good value. A weekend ticket comes in at the bargain price of £42 +bf. To stay for the official closing parties on Sunday night, tickets are an added £5, still making it one of the most competitively priced festivals around.

TAILGATING IS THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF ROAD RAGE A recent survey by Accident Advice Helpline revealed that tailgating was the number one cause of road rage in the United Kingdom. The survey found that 43% of British drivers had experienced road rage during the time they have been driving and a quarter of motorists admitted to experiencing road rage monthly, weekly or every time they drive. The survey revealed that almost a third of drivers believe their driving style changes as a result of road rage. Accident Advice Helpline found that the majority of drivers respond by using their horns (56%) or swearing (40%). Other typical reactions include: tailgating (15%), threatening or verbally insulting the other driver (8%), deliberately driving in an unsafe manner (8%) and throwing something from the car with intent (2%). More than 1,000 British drivers were then asked what caused them to experience road rage. A staggering 52% of drivers cited tailgating or aggressive driving as the ultimate trigger - whereas only 15% of drivers experience road rage after being involved in a collision.
Other triggers of road rage have been identified, these include: rude gestures (35%), being cut up in a lane (33%), high speeding drivers (19%) and flashing lights and sounding the horn (17%). Surprisingly more female drivers admit to experiencing road rage than men, but more men admit to experiencing road rage every time they drive. 6% of male drivers made the admission, compared to only 4% of women. Men were also more likely to change the way they drive whilst experiencing road rage. 44% of men responded “yes” when asked ‘When you have road rage, does it change the way you drive?’ Only 27% of women felt their driving changes as a result of road rage. The research findings showed that Scotland was the most common country in the UK for road rage to occur, with over 55% of motorists claiming to have experienced road rage. Worryingly, 12% of motorists also admitted that road rage had previously caused an accident. David Carter of Accident Advice Helpline said: “This survey highlights that road rage is a common problem on UK roads and drivers need to take
steps to avoid the potentially dangerous ‘red mist’ descending.” “Changing the way you drive to teach another driver a lesson is not a solution and unfortunately it can lead to accidents with tragic consequences.” “Motoring organisations, insurers, charities and the like all offer sound advice on combatting road rage to help drivers stay safe .”

drivers a day using this stretch. A similar scheme on the M25 which opened just over a year ago has seen the busiest journey times being halved and the number of collisions reduced by a fifth. Highways England senior programme manager Andy Kirk said: “The new smart motorway will tackle congestion and improve journey times for the thousands of drivers who use it every day. “The hard shoulder has been permanently converted to an extra lane to significantly increase capacity, and we’ll keep vehicles moving using variable speed limits. “We’d also like to thank drivers for their cooperation during the work and look forward to improving journey times for those travelling between the East Midlands and South Yorkshire.” CCTV will be used 24 hours a day to enable staff in Highways England’s regional control centres near Nottingham and Wakefield to respond quickly to incidents, closing lanes using red ‘X’s on overhead signs if necessary. Drivers using the upgraded stretch of the M1 will also be able to use emergency refuge areas if they break down.

SMARTER MOTORWAY OPENS FOR DRIVERS ON THE M1 The final phase of a £205 million upgrade to improve journey times and reduce congestion on a 20 mile section of the M1 spanning the East Midlands and South Yorkshire went live this week. The Highways England scheme between junction 28 (Mansfield) and junction 31 (Worksop) is the first smart motorway in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire, where the hard shoulder has been permanently converted to an extra lane. Variable speed limits will also be used to keep vehicles moving, tackling the stop-start conditions many drivers have experienced in the past. It is being delivered as part of a £15bn Government investment in motorways and major A roads by 2021. Roads minister Andrew Jones said: “The completion of the smart motorway on this section of the M1 will make a real difference to people travelling between Mansfield, Chesterfield and Worksop, delivering better and smoother journeys, helping businesses and boosting the local economy. “This is all part of our plans to build a road network that is fit for the future, with a record £15 billion going into improving our roads, reducing congestion and keeping Britain moving.” Contractors for Highways England have worked 1.75 million combined hours to complete the scheme, which will improve journeys for more than 95,000
31
The smart motorway between junctions 28 and 31 includes: • 40 miles of extra lanes • 140 electronic signs • 94 CCTV cameras with infrared capability • 20 emergency refuge areas • 17 overhead gantries

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
A strange week for me this time out, the big news is that I’ve retired! In truth, it’s been a long time coming, I’ve known about it for a while, but when it finally happens, it’s still a bit of a shock, but at 46 years old, I’m now unemployed… therefore, now self-employed. After twenty one years in the Fire Service, and almost eight in the Armed Forces, I’ve made the decision to become a full time angler and writer, so this is the first time I’ve really had to sit down and consider exactly what I can keep on, and what must fall by the wayside… The retirement is the result of injury, which now unfortunately manifests itself as severely painful auto-immune arthritis, and the medication (a low dose of chemotherapy) is such that I’m no longer a viable risk whilst riding the fire appliance, and alternative employment, due to funding cuts, is no longer an option, so I’ve been finished. I was told at 1100, and was out through the door at 1300; not much time to prepare! It’s a strange feeling, I still need to earn, but the terms of my retirement are such that I can only take paid employment for a reduced number of hours, so fishing will have to become my main source of income. I can’t really moan about that can I? In some ways, retirement just means more of the same; I’ve been writing on corporate social media and in weekly and monthly magazines for a while, but it’s always been a sideline… now it’s for real, so I have to make it stick. At least I can tell the wife ‘I’m off to work’ when I get the rods out, the hard part is working how to get paid when I go… I almost didn’t get to enjoy any retirement. On my way to my weekly session, in darkness at 0645, I approached a blind bend and hidden dip. I know the road extremely well, so was moving at a fair clip,

Lighter nights mean one thing in the County Senior League; busy times. The first silverware was claimed this week, along with a full fixture list over the weekend and the first midweek games of 2016. U21 Cup Final The first silverware of the season was up for grabs on Thursday night, with Caribbean Sports U21 and Stocksbridge Park Steels U21 fighting it out for the U21 Cup at Sandy Lane. The final turned out to be a classic, finishing 3-2 to Stocksbridge. League Cup Quarter-Final Finally after a number of postponements, the final Quarter-Final of the League Cup took place at Chaucer School between Jubilee Sports and Houghton Main. The tie was level at 3-3 after 120 minutes, with Jubilee prevailing 6-5 on penalties. Jubilee will face Wickersley in the Semi-Final on Thursday 7th April, with the winner taking on Grimethorpe Sports in the final. Premier Division The top two met on Tuesday night at Frecheville Sports & Social club, with league leaders Frecheville hosting second placed Houghton Main. Frecheville came out 2-0 winners (a third consecutive cleansheet) to extend their lead to 12 points. Joe Dungworth scored all five goals as defending champions Swinton Athletic beat Jubilee Sports 5-0 at Mexborough Athletic Ground midweek. Dungworth scored four goals in their last match against Stocksbridge. Swinton made it four wins from four in March and remain unbeaten in 2016. They sit in third position, 14 points off the lead, with three games in hand. Handsworth Parramore Reserves ended a run of nine league games without a win, by beating Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves 2-1 at the Look Local stadium. Ryan Lee and Theo Wilson were both on target for Handsworth. Goals from Tim Council, Ross Levesley and Adam Dewsnap gave AFC Penistone Church a 3-2 win over Millmoor Juniors at the Memorial Ground. The win takes Penistoen into fourth place. Carey Welford scored a hat-trick to inspire North
and had noted two lorries coming towards me, so just eased my speed and covered the brakes, the result of ten years driving fire engines, when I was horrified (and I mean horrified) to see the blazing headlights of a car fast approaching, and they were on my side of the road! Having replayed the dashcam footage, I reckon I had just under two seconds to avoid a head on smash. I wasted the first second feeling incredibly sad, cursing the other driver for killing me, and wondered how much it was going to hurt, and whether the dashcam would survive the impact. In the remaining time, I realised that I wasn’t going to give up, and despite his lights, and those of the two lorries, filling my windscreen, I wrenched the steering wheel to my left, struck the kerb, and bounced up into the air, hit the grass and braced for impact. It never came… I have absolutely no idea how we (me) avoided a horrendous collision. When I returned the same way later in the day, black marks were clearly evident where I’d struck the kerb, there was an almighty curve of rubber where the other driver had stamped on his brakes, and I still couldn’t work out how we had missed…lady luck was definitely smiling that day, that’s the only excuse I can come up with… There is no truth in the rumour that it was my wife coming the other way either, I’ve offered to share the retirement fund, so there was no need for her to do away with me! Needless to say, my concentration wasn’t what I should be, and, although I managed to land a few quality roach on caster, a couple of hours was enough, and I made the decision to return home. I needed a hug! (Soppy, yes, but the footage of the near miss is on my Facebook page, you watch it and decide). My retirement starts now. It’s time to put into practice what every angler dreams of and start earning money from my angling…let’s see if the reality is as good as the dream; I’ll let you know how I do, but in the meantime, tight lines…

Gawber Colliery to a 5-3 win over Wickersley FC. North Gawber had drawn midweek 1-1 away against Oughtibridge WMFC. Oughtibridge followed that draw with a vital 1-0 win over Athersley Recreation Reserves at Sheerien Park. The win takes Oughtibridge up one place to fourth bottom. Division One It has been a hugely significant week in the Division One title race. Firstly, second placed Caribbean Sports suffered a 1-0 loss at home midweek to mid-table Sheffield Bankers. But they bounced back immediately with a huge 2-0 win over league leaders Denaby United, thanks to a brace from Ross Barrows. That win was enough to give Caribbean top spot. Denaby United are just a point back with two games in hand. Prior to the week Denaby Main were in third place, but they lost heavily at home 5-1 to Silkstone United. Dan Duffy starred for Silkstone, scoring three times. Wombwell Main are now in third place, after they claimed four points this week. Wombwell beat struggling Millmoor Juniors Reserves 3-0 midweek and then held AFC Dronfield to a 3-3 draw at Gosforth Playing Fields on the weekend. Wombwell’s position could prove to be deceptive, as they six points behind the lead, but have six games spare.

WARNOCK’S WONDERS MOVE FIVE POINTS CLEAR ROTHERHAM UNITED earned their fifth win in six games in the most dramatic of circumstances as Greg Halford’s late spot kick saw them claim another three points in their battle against the Championship drop. Following the international break, the Millers named an unchanged line-up following their eye-catching victory at Ipswich Town last time out for the visit of Steve Evans’ Leeds United. The Millers had the first sight of goal when Lee Camp’s punt upfield was deftly flicked by Leon Best into the path of Frecklington, who tried his luck from distance. Moments later, Halford’s bullet throw into the Leeds box looked inch-perfect for Best on the six-yard box, but the inform striker failed to make a connection despite having the goal at his mercy. At the other end, Leeds penned the Millers back deep into their own half and following fine flowing
passing involving Alex Mowatt, Mirco Antenucci attempted a dink from just inside the box but his effort harmlessly cleared the home crossbar. Just before the half-hour mark, the Millers broke the deadlock when Halford switched the play to release Joe Mattock, who swung a delightful centre from the left flank, which bisected the Leeds defence and Frecklington timed his run to perfection to superb steer the ball, despite being on the stretch, past the attentions of Silvestri, to find the heart of the visitors goal. Moments later, Antenucci made something out of nothing to drill a low effort through a ruck of bodies but Camp was well-stationed to snuff out the danger. Next Stephen Kelly put his body on the line to block Antenucci’s goalbound effort before fine interplay involving Halford and Frecklington gave Grant Ward a glimpse of goal, at the other end, but he blazed his effort
from the edge of the box over the bar. The home fans had their hearts in their mouths when Giuseppe Bellusci strode from the back to find Antenucci, with his back to goal, and the Italian unleashed a fantastic strike from distance which shaved the home upright. With halftime approaching, Broadfoot rose highest to meet another Halford exocet throw but his point-blank header blazed over. Following the interval, a Leeds defensive error was pounced upon by Grant Ward, whose pull-back looked inviting for Matt Derbyshire. In the next phase of play, Mattock swung a delightful centre which saw Best rise highest at the far post. Moments later, Halford’s long throw had the Leeds defence at sixes and sevens and following ping-pong around the visitors box. Just past the hour mark, the Millers were reduced to ten men when Derbyshire went up for an aerial challenge with Berardi
and the defender reacted angrily to the challenge and referee Kevin Friend brandished a red card. Warnock immediately threw Danny Ward into the fray before sub Mustapha Carayol fired a long-range effort over the home bar. The home fans were incensed when Bellusci clashed with Danny Ward following another aerial duel but the Italian escaped with a yellow-card. The Millers were determined to retain their advantage and Mattock was the latest to throw his body infront of sub Stuart Dallas’ point-blank shot when he looked certain to score before Leeds skipper Sol Bamba fluffed his lines when he headed wide from Dallas’ corner despite having the goal at his mercy. Despite Rotherham’s brave rearguard action, the home side were dealt a cruel blow when Charlie Taylor’s cross was headed clear by Broadfoot and Luke Murphy struck a long range effort, which took a wicked
ROVERS LAST GASP HEARTACHE BUTLER DEFIANT A last gasp equaliser from Niall Canavan, prevented Rovers from leaving Spotland with all three points. Rovers were the better side during the opening period, twice Andy Williams got beyond the Rochdale defence but was denied on both occasions by goalkeeper Josh Lillis. The Rovers centre forward also saw a headed effort go over the bar. Dale went close on twelves minutes when a corner resulted in a header hitting the post, before three Rovers playing blocking the follow up. Despite having most of the chances, Rovers entered half-time a goal down, thanks to a freak goal from Callum Camps. He managed to take wonderful first touch before tapping into an empty net, after ‘keeper Remi Matthews was caught in ‘no-mans’ land.
Rovers tried to respond before the break, and Williams had a shout for a penalty when he looked to be dragged to the floor, but the referee waved away Rovers appealed. Darren Ferguson’s side started the second half at a similar pace to how they ended the first, and were level on fiftyseven minutes, when Gary McSheffrey got the byline before squaring the ball to right-back Mitchell Lund, who netted his second goal for the club. Then on 67 minutes, Rovers led after a McSheffrey freekick found Andy Butler who nearly flicked the ball over the keeper’s head to gives his side the lead. Rovers made a double change when Lund and Ricardo Calder were replaced by Harry Middleton and Richard Chaplow, as Darren Ferguson looked to
shore up the midfield. In the 83rd Craig Alcock went into a tackle with Dale substitute, Peter Vincenti and despite the referee not awarding a free-kick, both players were booked. Then a few minutes later, Alcock was shown a second yellow and Rovers had to play added time with ten men. The substitutions, combined with the red card, resulted in five minutes of additional time being indicated. As time looked to be up Rochdale were awarded a free-kick on the half way line. Rovers appeared to have seen the danger out, however the ball was sent back into the penalty area and hit the bar, before bouncing to centre back Canavan, who hit home, to snatch 2 points off Rovers in cruel circumstances.
Andy Butler was adamant that he and has Rovers teammates have not given up on their battle for survival in League One despite late heartache against Rochdale at the weekend. “Whenever you concede a 96th minute goal it’s a kick in the teeth but we take the positives, it’s a better performance than we’ve had over the last few weeks,” said the defender. “You can see that we’ve not given up here, we’ll battle on and there’s 18 points to play for and that’s what we’ve got to look at. The fans were brilliant, they’re still behind us, we’re playing for them and we’ll get there.” Butler said that the team will continue to fight to get away from the threat of relegation when they travel to Bury on Saturday. “There’s no point in being negative now this game has gone, we look at Bury away.”
deflection of a home defender, to wrongfoot Camp and find the heart of the home goal. The visitors were lifted by the equaliser and Bridcutt tried his luck from distance which forced Camp to smartly tip over the bar before Wood headed over from Dallas’ corner in the next Leeds attack. The game took a dramatic twist with two minutes remaining when Rotherham launched a quick counter attack and Danny Ward showed opportunism to spot Frecklington at the far post and Bellusci made a hash of
an attempted clearance and the Rotherham midfielder looked to round Silvestri, who dumped him to the floor, prompting the referee to show his second red card of the afternoon. As Leeds had used their allocated number of substitutes, Bellusci was forced to take on the goalkeeping gloves and Halford kept his nerve from the spot to slide the ball into the bottom corner of the goal to send the AESSEAL New York Stadium into ecstasy.
THE GREATEST PLAYER NEVER TO PLAY FOR ENGLAND? To get our readers well and truly in the mood for the forthcoming European Championships in June, John Webster commences a ten part special exploring the best players who probably should, but actually never did, represent their country. At the end of the series we
will put it to you, The Mercury reader, to give a definitive vote on the subject and decide who was the best player never to play for England. All voters will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win an England goody bag to enhance their viewing experience this summer.
NO. 5 DARREN HUCKERBY
side of England’s midfield. With his electrifying pace that scared defenders to death regularly on a Saturday afternoon, surely Huckerby’s ability was an avenue that should have been explored. After leaving Coventry City, Huckerby went on to have spells with Leeds United, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Norwich City. The fleet-footed winger continued to terrorise defenders and was twice voted Norwich City’s player of the year. A massive fan favourite at Carrow Road, Huckerby was also voted into the Canaries Hall of fame in 2004. Unfortunately for Huckerby, he probably enjoyed the best of his football whilst Glenn Hoddle was in charge. A call-up to the England B squad was the only reward he received for his endeavours. Considering the self-absorbed Hoddle was incompetent enough to leave Paul Gascoigne out of his ’98 World Cup squad, we probably shouldn’t be too surprised that Huckerby’s talent was overlooked too.
Born in Nottingham, Darren Huckerby not only has a fabulous name, but was also blessed with fantastic athleticism and explosive footballing ability. After starting out with Lincoln City as a Youngster, Huckerby soon made a three-division step up to the Premier league. Following a brief spell with Newcastle United, Huckerby got settled into top-flight football with Coventry City. It was during his time at Coventry, that Huckerby struck up an effective partnership with Dion Dublin. His pace and dribbling ability, complimented by Dublin’s strength and holdup play, made them one of the most feared forward lines in the Premier League. It was easy to imagine Huckerby linking up well with Alan Shearer if given a chance. Huckerby wasn’t just a striker though, he was also dangerous when deployed on the wing. He may well have been the answer to the constant moans and groans regarding the left

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BLADES BOUNCE BACK The Blades made it three successive home wins with an impressive display against third-placed Walsall, who suffered only their second away defeat of the campaign. First half goals from Chris Basham and Billy Sharp - five minutes apart saw the Blades rise to eighth in the table. Defenders Baptiste and Edgar returned to the starting XI with youngsters Whiteman and McGahey dropping to the bench. There was also a change in role for Basham, who began at right wing-back. The opening 20 minutes was a case of both sides sizing each other up, both goalkeepers were largely redundant, although Etheridge did dive when Adams shot wide. For the visitors, Demetriou’s free-kick struck the wall. Twice in one move the Blades went close on 25 minutes. Flynn found
Done on the overlap but the left-sided player’s shot was saved by Etheridge and from recycled possession Adams shot over. It was a sign that United were getting on top and the opening goal was not too far away, thanks to the wingbacks. Done’s deep cross between defence and goalkeeper was teasing and BASHAM arrived at the back post to head into the roof of the net. Mantom fired at Long from 25 yards but with the next attack the Blades doubled the lead. Basham got the better of Henry on the right and although his cross was meant for Flynn, SHARP found the space to volley home from 12 yards, giving Etheridge little chance. Late in the half the opportunities were also being created by United. The all-action Basham fired wide and Sharp’s header from Done was hacked clear.
The first chance of the second half also fell to Basham, he volleyed over after a Coutts cross was only half cleared, whilst for the visitors Bradshaw was crowded out in the box following a corner. Hammond was booked and McGahey replaced Baptiste but the Blades remained in control as the game opened up. Coutts delivered a couple of free-kicks and Adams threatened to get clear with his pace. As the game entered the final
15 minutes Forde fired wide from outside the box, he then hit a free-kick into the wall twice - after McEveley fouled Sawyers. In injury-time Pennington headed over as the Blades professionally saw out the remaining moments and there was another opportunity to extend the advantage when Flynn, Sharp and Calvert-Lewin won possession but a corner was the end result, just moments before the final whistle.
CROSBY’S WALSALL VERDICT
Assistant Manager Andy Crosby felt the Blades were full value for the 2-0 victory over promotion chasing Walsall at Bramall Lane on Saturday. First-half goals from Chris Basham and Billy Sharp paved the way for the success over Jon Whitney’s Saddlers, who had previously only lost one on the road in the league this term. And it was United’s desire and commitment, along with their ruthlessness in the penalty area that earnt Crosby’s praise. He remarked: “We performed really well and deservedly won the game “After Southend, we were written off by many, but we spoke about winning the next seven games and seeing where that took us, we have made a good start. “The fans demand effort first and foremost and we won the majority of our man for man duels, we applied pressure on Walsall and that created an atmosphere. “We controlled the game and enjoyed plenty of possession in Walsall’s half which was our aim. When our front players defend as they did, we tell them they will get more chances because we will win the ball higher up the field and the opposition won’t be as organised.” The former centre-half
added: “Scoring first always helps, so to get two in front by halftime gave us a massive confidence lift. Both goals were excellent for differing reasons. “The first one came from a brave header from Chris (Basham) at the back post from a terrific ball in from Matt (Done) and the second was an excellent finish from Billy (Sharp) after Bash went from scorer to provider. “Both with and without the ball we dominated the game for 75 minutes or more and that’s really pleasing.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 FORESTIERI EDGES RECORDS FALL BUT CARLOS LOOKS AHEAD TO ROVERS OWLS UPWARDS A Fernando Forestieri goal seven minutes from time gave the Owls a vital win at Huddersfield on Saturday. A low-key derby seemed to be heading for a stalemate until the livewire striker slid in at the back post to give the visitors victory. Prior to that decisive moment, it was a game where opportunities were thin on the ground with few talking points. But the moment that mattered came once again from the Owls’ in-form striker, who claimed his 14th and arguably most important goal of the season. The momentum was with Wednesday from the start and Ross Wallace went close with a long ranger inside the first five minutes. The Scot then fired in a free kick from equal distance that deflected off the wall and into the grateful arms of Jed Steer as the Owls bossed possession. Huddersfield offered little in the first half, with a daisycutter from Tommy Smith the hosts’ only effort on target. For all their dominance, though, Wednesday struggled to create any
real openings and both teams went down the tunnel looking to up the ante if the points were to be claimed. The Owls did exactly that and almost took the lead on 56 minutes. Former Town defender Jack Hunt dinked a neat cross that landed kindly for Aiden McGeady to pick his spot but Joel Lynch headed off the line. Hunt went close himself on 73 minutes, firing inches over the
top having taken a clever pull-back from Atdhe Nuhiu. Forestieri took aim from 25 yards moments later and smashed narrowly wide but went one better with seven minutes to go. Lucas Joao powered forward down the left channel and delivered a teasing ball to the back stick, where Forestieri was on hand to slot home and cement Wednesday’s place in the coveted top six.
Wednesday’s recent defensive resilience has seen the club break one record this week and move a step closer to another. Four successive clean sheets away from home set a new record and took the tally to 15 for the season – two short of the overall club record for a single campaign. But Carlos Carvalhal says nothing has changed with regard his football philosophies and although delighted with the strength of the Owls’ rearguard, the head coach says his primary focus is winning games and entertaining. He explained: “I never
said that I like to take goals, I said I prefer to win 5-4 than 1-0 and I still say the same. If you don’t do mistakes on the defensive side of the game then I am happy but not all the goals belong to defensive mistakes, it can be the quality of the opponent. If the quality of the opponent can do five goals against us and if our quality can do six, then I prefer to win 6-5 than 1-0. “But if you ask me do I like not to concede any goals then of course I like it. But to be happy we must score the minimum of one goal to win because our first priority is to win
the games. I am here in the role of the coach, I am not a defender anymore and this is my philosophy. I like to do goals and play attractive football and for my players to express the talent they have.” During the pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Blackburn, he added: “The players deserve what they are living at the moment, they have been fantastic, all of them. All of them are improving, they are better players with better value in this moment individually because the collective is working.”

Fernando Forestieri scored the allimportant goal to seal victory at the John Smith’s Stadium but post-match, the emphasis from the 26-year-old was firmly on the team. Forestieri – now on 14 goals for the campaign, the most prolific season of his career – says his achievements in front of goal would not be possible without his team mates. Lucas Joao provided a wonderful assist for Forestieri to slide the ball home at the back stick to snatch a late victory over Huddersfield and after the game he said: “I’m so happy but when I score, I say in every interview if it wasn’t for my team mates, I can’t score these goals. So I want to say thank you to
them. At Huddersfield it was Lucas, if he didn’t run for me then I don’t score the goal. I think we had every player playing so good, we are all together and I think every single player played very well.” Wednesday have little time to let the dust settle on the Yorkshire derby success with a home clash against Blackburn
THE SHAKEY
coming up on Tuesday. Up to fifth in the Championship after the 1-0 win over the Terriers, Forestieri added: “It’s good for me because now I have scored 14 but it’s thanks to the group for sure. Now it’s important we keep trying to improve with every game and look forward to Blackburn on Tuesday.”
