THE GIFT THAT GROWS TREE PLANTING IN SHEFFIELD The Gift that Grows project run by the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership (SYFP) has had a bumper month of tree planting in March with local residents, businesses and community groups all coming together to plant over 100 trees and add to Shefﬁeld’s credentials for being the greenest city in Britain. The Gift that Grows scheme, which began in 1991, enables residents, community groups, local businesses and schools to donate trees to the

scheme and plant them across South Yorkshire. Last month, local marketing agency Diva Creative celebrated their 18th Birthday in style by sponsoring and planting 5 Magnolia Sprengeri ‘Diva’ trees at Shefﬁeld’s Sheaf Valley Park. SYFP Team members also planted two large Rowan ‘Golden Wonder’ trees. Sheaf Valley Park is a newly reshaped green space for people living in the Park Hill area and city centre workers to visit and relax in. It has come a long way from

the initial proposals for the park back in 2005, which included an amphitheatre, improved and new footpaths and an arboretum all set within a green infrastructure network. A key aim for the award winning park was better connected green links for pedestrians and cyclists. These links include the route from the station up the Cholera Monument and beyond via the new Clay Wood link to Granville Road and Norfolk Park. The park is now

maintained by Shefﬁeld City Council’s Parks service, very ably supported by the Friends of Sheaf Valley Park who arrange events and litter picks on site and in the surrounding area regularly. A ’City Arboretum’ was part of the initial plan and the planting that has taken place during March is playing its part in achieving that goal. The Gift that Grows also invited families who have sponsored trees over the years to a planting event which took place at Skye

Edge Greenspace from where there is a fantastic viewpoint over the city. With the support of Ed Thatcher a Community Forestor from Shefﬁeld City Council’s Parks and Countryside Service they planted over 100 trees ranging from two varieties of Oak, Alder, Cherry, Hazel and Rowan. These newly planted trees will provide a new more wildlife friendly, attractive and sheltered area for members of the community and visitors to the city to enjoy.

With trails like Parkwood Springs and Lady Canning’s Plantation, Sheffield is growing its reputaion as The Outdoor City and is already on the map in the mountain biking world. People come from all over the UK, Europe and beyond to take part in the Steel City Downhill, or just to join the thousands of spectators who line the trail to experience the adrenaline from the sidelines. The trail covers 0.8km, with all riders setting off from the start ramp at 30 second intervals from 11am, flying down the side of a wooded hill at high speed, with a second opportunity to beat their time on another run in the afternoon, then closing the day with a presentation ceremony for the overall winners. Taking place in Sheffield’s beautiful Grenoside Woods, the festival-style event has become a great day out for all the family. The infamous ‘bombhole’ will be the centre of action for this year’s spectators – in addition to the great view of the racers there will be a host of local stalls so you won’t have to go hungry or thirsty. Bradfield Brewery will be pulling a pint or two, coffee lovers can get a boost from Motoré Café and the Bean Machine and for hungry onlookers there’s a BBQ and hog roast from Whirlow Hall Farm Café, award winning burritos from Streetfood Chef and tasty toppings from Netheredge Pizza Co, plus music and entertainment from Monster Energy. It’s free to attend with plenty going on throughout the day from around 10:30am – 4:00pm. Visitors are encouraged to use the woodland car park with a small fee of £3, to prevent access issues in the area.

Get ready for speed, thrills, tricks and maybe a few tumbles as Peaty’s Steel City Downhill races through Sheffield’s woodland on Saturday 16 April. Now in it’s sixth year, taking over Grenoside Woods Steve Peat’s Steel City Downhill is an awesome downhill race where young and old, and pros and beginners alike take to the woods, experience the thrills and compete for their category title, with spectators getting a piece of the action and the chance to cheer on their world champion. Featuring 250 riders across nine categories including overall male, overall female and junior champion this race has room for everyone – with entrants ranging from 10 to 70 years old, world class riders and total beginners. The event is growing year on year in participation and spectation, with 300 entrants and 3000 spectators at last years event. Now nicknamed ‘the biggest little race’, this year is set to be extra-special as Steve Peat marks his last season before retiring from competing in the world cup. Sheffield born, World Champion mountain biker and Steel City Downhill organiser Steve Peat said: “This is an extra special one for me because it’s my last year racing World cups – I missed out last year due to injury so I want to make this race a memorable one for me and everyone else. “The beauty of this race is that it’s inclusive to people of all ages and abilities which means for some this could be their first ever race – but who knows what that might inspire them to go on to. “Sheffield is The UKs mountain bike Mecca –

LAST CHANCE TO WALK 100K IN YORKSHIRE WITH BLIND VETERANS The deadline is fast approaching for Yorkshire residents interested in walking 100 kilometres together with those supported by Blind Veterans UK whilst raising money for the charity. The 100k Yorkshire is the inaugural joint fundraising challenge for Blind Veterans UK and Guide Dogs which will take place on 18 June. Sign up before 29 April 2016 to be able to take part in this magnificent event. The 100k Yorkshire will start in the stunning Denby Dale, which is known for its pies, and will finish at the Blind Veterans UK Sheffield centre and Guide Dogs outreach centre. The walk will take participants over the green hills, rugged moors and small stone-walled villages of Yorkshire and the Peak District. Anna Scalera, Fundraising Events Manager at Blind Veterans UK, says: “This is an exciting and new event which will allow people to walk with

veterans supported by Blind Veterans UK. They get to learn about how the charity supports them while enjoying the fantastic views.” Registration for the 100k is open with a registration fee of £60 for the 100km. For those not wanting to walk the full distance there is also a relay option available for teams of four walking 25k each. Teams taking part in the relay have a registration fee of £100. The all-inclusive entrance fee for participants includes lunch, dinner and breakfast at three rest stops, snacks and refreshments along the route and a free event t-shirt. PARENTS GET BAKING FOR SICK CHILDREN’S CHARITY TO SAY THANK YOU FOR ‘HOME FROM HOME’ The parents of a little boy who has a rare form of epilepsy which causes him to have at least 30 seizures a day are asking people to support The Sick Children’s Trust’s Big Chocolate Tea fundraiser this April. Donna and Dan McHugh, from Scunthorpe, were given free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation by The Sick Children’s Trust so that they could be by their son’s bedside when he was admitted to Sheffield Children’s Hospital to help reduce his seizures. Blake, 7, required specialist treatment at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for Dravet Syndrome, a condition which occurs in just 1 in 40,000 children. Blake underwent Vagus Nerve Stimulation, where a plate was fitted under his chest to send electric energy to the brain to help reduce epileptic seizures. Donna and Dan were supported by both The Sick Children’s Trust’s Treetop and Magnolia Houses located at the hospital, so they could be with him throughout. Donna says: “When Blake was in Intensive Care it was tough but it made a huge difference having the ‘Homes from Home’ Treetop and Magnolia. It meant we could be by

Blake’s side and he also knew that he wasn’t alone, we were there for him. It will be scary for him, he doesn’t really know what’s going on or why he goes to hospital so often, but if we can be there and keep some normality it really does help.” “We appreciate all the help the charity has given us and know that there will be many more families out there that will be in need of similar support. So we want to help spread the word by sharing Blake’s story and encouraging people across the UK to join the charity’s Big Chocolate Tea campaign to raise at least £30 to help provide a room for one night for another family with a sick child.” Donna and Dan are joining The Sick Children’s Trust’s Big Chocolate Tea fundraising event from 22 April – 2 May and are asking others to get involved too. Big Chocolate Tea aims to raise thousands of pounds to help support more families across the UK with ‘Home from Home’ accommodation when their child is sick in hospital. It costs on average £30 per night to provide a family with a room in one of the charity’s ‘Homes from Home’ which includes access to communal kitchens, bathrooms,

living rooms and dining rooms alongside a direct telephone line from each bedroom to the hospital ward. Treetop House Manager, Ann Wyatt, says: “When a child is taken to hospital to receive critical treatment, life for the whole family is thrown into turmoil. Treetop and Magnolia Houses mean families can stay together in free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation, just minutes from their sick child’s bedside - easing some of the worries at an incredibly difﬁcult time. “Big Chocolate Tea is all about getting together with friends, family and colleagues over tea and chocolate. At the same time, it’s a chance to make a difference to families with seriously ill children. SEARCH IS ON FOR SHEFFIELD’S WOMEN OF STEEL The much-anticipated Shefﬁeld Women of Steel statue will be unveiled onFriday 17 June – and the search is on to ensure that as many as possible of the city’s wartime heroines will be there to see it. The day will be even more memorable for the women who worked in the steelworks during two world wars, because each of them will be presented with a specially produced medallion as an additional thank you from the people of the city. One side of the medallion has a picture of the statue and the other is engraved: “With thanks to our wartime Women of Steel from the people of Shefﬁeld”.

All the surviving women who worked in the steel works during the two world wars will qualify for the medallion, as well as the families of those who are no longer with us. Application forms for the medallion are available from the receptions of the Town Hall and The Sheffield Star and online from www.sheffield.gov.uk/womenofsteel and the Star website. Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “It just goes to show what a special place these inspirational Women of Steel hold in the hearts of everyone in Sheffield. WeddingGuide Wedding Anniversary Traditions The historic origins of wedding anniversaries date back to the Holy Roman Empire, when husbands crowned their wives with a silver wreath on their twenty-fifth anniversary, and a gold wreath on the fiftieth. Later, principally in the twentieth century, commercialism led to the addition of more anniversaries being represented by a named gift. In the Commonwealth realms, one can receive a message from the monarch for 60th, 65th, and 70th wedding anniversaries, and any wedding anniversary after that.This is done by applying to Buckingham Palace in the United Kingdom, or to the Governor-General’s office in the other Commonwealth realms In Australia, where one can receive a letter of congratulations from the Governor-General on the 50th and all subsequent wedding anniversaries; the Prime Minister, the federal Opposition leader, local members of both state and federal parliaments, and state Governors may also send salutations for the same anniversaries. In Canada, one can also receive a message from the Governor-General for the 50th anniversary, and every fifth anniversary after that. In the United States, a couple can receive a greeting from the President for any wedding anniversary on or after the 50th. Roman Catholics may apply to the Office of Papal Charities for a Papal blessing for wedding anniversaries of a special nature (25th, 50th, 60th, etc.).

Celebration and gifts The names of some anniversaries provide guidance for appropriate or traditional gifts for the spouses to give each other; if there is a party these can be brought by the guests or influence the theme or decoration. These gifts vary in different countries, but some years have wellestablished connections now common to most nations: 5th Wooden, 10th Tin, 15th Crystal, 20th China, 25th Silver, 30th Pearl, 40th Ruby, 50th Gold, 60th Diamond, 70th Platinum. In English speaking countries the first, wooden, gift was cut on the day of celebration and then presented to the wife as a finished article before the next two quarter days had passed. The tradition may have originated in medieval Germany where, if a married couple lived to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their wedding, the wife was presented by her friends and neighbours with a silver wreath to congratulate them for the good fortune that had prolonged the lives of the couple for so many years. On celebration of the 50th, the wife received a wreath of gold. Over time the number of symbols expanded and the German tradition came to assign gifts that had direct connections with each stage of married life. The symbols have changed over time. For example, in the United Kingdom, diamond was a well known symbol for the 75th anniversary, but this changed to the now more common 60th anniversary after Diamond Anniversary of Queen Victoria. II’s 60 years on the throne was widely marked as her Diamond Jubilee and commemorated in 2012. The origins of the current gift conventions date to 1937. Before that, only the 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 50th, and 75th anniversaries had an associated gift. In 1937, the American National Retail Jeweler Association (now known as Jewelers of America as a result of an organizational merger) introduced an expanded list of gifts. The revamped list gave a gift for each year up to the 25th and then for every ﬁfth anniversary after that.

Campaigners for Britain Stronger in Europe have visited Sheffield Hallam University to hear how EU funding has helped the University create world-leading technologies. Lord William Wallace, Rachel Reeves MP and Paul Blomfield MP from ‘Stronger In’ visited the University last week (Friday 8 April) as part of a tour of the country campaigning for the UK to remain in the European Union. The team spoke to supporters outside the University before being given a tour of Hallam’s Materials and Engineering Research Institute (MERI), which has benefited significantly from EU funding. In the last five years the Institute has secured 16 EU-funded projects, generating £13.5million income. The funding has also enabled scientists working in MERI to develop world-leading technology in coatings for components used in space exploration, aerospace and biomedical industries. Sheffield Hallam University’s ViceChancellor, Professor Chris Husbands, accompanied the ‘Stronger In’ team during their tour. Professor Husbands is one of more than 100 university leaders to sign an open letter highlighting how UK membership of the European Union enhances the positive impact of universities. In Yorkshire and Humberside, EU students generated £167.7m for the regional economy and 1,638 jobs, according to analysis carried out by Universities UK. Professor Husbands said: “Being a member of the EU delivers powerful benefits for universities and gives us greater influence across the international stage. “Membership allows us to receive support for vital research and work more efficiently with partners across the continent. In the twenty-first century, research and ideas are no respecters of

national boundaries. “Shefﬁeld is a great British city, but it is also a great European city. ENJOY A NIGHT OF DIRTY DANCING AT PENISTONE PARAMOUNT Back in 1987 a low-budget film captured the hearts of cinemagoers the world over as two relatively unknown performers – Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey – danced their way to movie immortality, and $214m at the box office. Since then, generation after generation has continued to take the legendary production – Dirty Dancing – to their hearts. Demand for a film sequel has swelled year upon year. Prospects of a remake have escalated during the past five years, only to be scotched in July 2015 when the producers announced they wouldn’t be taking up a multi-million dollar production grant offered towards making the film. There’s no doubt music and dance fans are crying out for a new brand-new dose of Dirty Dancing, according to theatre show producer Michael Taylor of Easy Theatres. “To satisfy the overwhelming demand,” says Michael, “we went on the road during the spring of 2015 with a theatre show that offered an all-new take

on the classic story. “Having enjoyed many sold-out performances as we criss-crossed the country we are now proud to announce an even more extensive tour with a larger cast commencing March 2016.” A Night of Dirty Dancing – the ultimate tribute show – fast forwards theatregoers to Kellerman’s end of season show, retelling the tale from an alternative perspective, and still featuring the hits from everyone’s favourite dance movie. Recast and rescripted for 2016, more than 100 dates are already scheduled for the 150-day tour period. More than 2,000 performers applied for a role in the production. “Celebrated ﬁlm Dirty Dancing boasted the greatest movie soundtrack of all time,” says Michael Taylor. “All these hits are superbly performed in this fast-moving, slicklychoreographed theatrical treat.” Dirty Dancing’s score included: She’s Like the Wind, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Hey Baby, Wipeout, Do You Love Me, Be My Baby,

Hungry Eyes and the Oscarwinning (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life. Fans are invited to take a trip back to the summer of ’63, to relive Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey’s sizzling performance in the ultimate coming of age romance. “It’s all down to Kellerman’s end-of-season show,” says Michael. “Revel in the moments you loved, the memories you made and the music that’s resonated throughout the years.” The film defines the 1980s. TRAMLINES FESTIVALS ADDS MORE ACTS TO 2016 LINEUP Tramlines, the UK’s biggest inner-city music festival, has added a fourth & fifth wave of acts to its 2016 lineup. Amongst the new additions is Saturday night Main Stage co-headliner George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, plus The Enemy, Jane Weaver, Shining, Basement, Little Comets, Moon Duo, Teleman, Holy Esque, Beaty Heart and many more. These new artists join the formerly announced Dizzee Rascal, Jurassic 5, Kelis, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Mystery Jets, Gaz Coombes, Dawn Penn, Field Music, Young Fathers and loads more for the festival’s eighth instalment. ANT LAW PROCLAIMED IN SHEFFIELD Preview: Ant Law, 14/04/16, Sheffield Millennium Hall By Kt Evans Injecting some well needed Spring sunshine onto our showery April, Sheffield is to be brightened up by the performance of Ant Law at Sheffield’s Millennium Hall on 14th April. Having been named “An Innovator” by The Guardian, this Jazz guitarist is famed for his punchy melodies and intricate live showcasing. So, what do we already know about Ant Law? Having studied physics at Edinburgh University, the guitarist’s performances introduce a technicality rarely witnessed in the industry today. His first album, “Entanglement” oozed groove whilst also established Law as a craftsman of jazz guitar. Having been described as “dipping once again into the complex concepts of physics both for his title and some thematic composition ideas,” the performer

names and brand-new artists, and attracting approximately 100,000 people every year. The festival's organisers are thrilled to announce its final 2016 headliner, in the form of the highly influential and much-sampled funk icon George Clinton, who brings his Parliament Funkadelic Mothership to the Tramlines Main Stage for an unforgettable stage show featuring upwards of 20 musicians onstage. Back by popular demand for their third Tramlines are Little Comets, bringing a classic indie rock set to the Saturday Main Stage. Elsewhere, indie trio The Enemy will headline the Leadmill on Friday 22 July in what will be one of their very last shows, following a recent announcement that the band will split after their autumn tour. Expect a farewell set punctuated with hit singles that have sold over a million copies around the world. The experimental, psychedelic alt-rocker, Jane Weaver, brings her 20-year strong catalogue to the Tramlines Folk Forest, set in the beautiful Endcliffe Park. Joining her are much-feted leftfield indie-pop outfit Teleman, performing tracks from their brand new album, Brilliant Saintly. Ipswich five-piece Basement are back with a bang after a short hiatus, to headline the City Hall's majestic Grand Ballroom venue, having also just released a new album, Promise Everything. City Hall's experimental rock lineup will also feature the debut appearance of Norwegian alt-rock group Shining, amongst others. Crossing the Atlantic to play at Tramlines in the ethereal setting of the Sheffield Cathedral is U.S. pysch outfit Moon Duo, made up of Sanae Yamada and Ripley Johnson, also of psych heroes Wooden Shjips. Festival organisers are thrilled to announce the return of three heavyweights for 2016 after storming successes in previous years: kicking off Tramlines as it means to go on with a melting pot of funk, disco, techno and more is seismic duo Mr Scruff & MC Kwasi, who return to the legendary Leadmill for the festival’s official opening party on Thursday 21 July; original reggae selector David ‘Ram Jam’ Rodigan returns to take the reins at the o2 Academy on Friday with a bag of bass-heavy, dancehall tunes, while on Saturday night at Foundry, the funk and soul maestro Craig Charles returns after roadblocking DQ Nightclub at Tramlines 2015! received heavy praise from national press and fans alike. Having worked with the likes of Camille O’Sullivan and Koby Israelite, Ant Law has also been in the studio with a range of performers to include Cory Henry, Mica Paris, Leon Ware and Steve Brookstein. With Stevie Ray Vaughan arguably the musician’s biggest influence from the word go, Law has built up vast knowledge and skill whilst also rapidly developing the intricacies within his own material. His second album, “Zero Sum World” was once again met with huge praise, which builds on the foundations laid through “Entanglement.” With some of Jazz’s most influential musicians featured on the album, to include percussionist Hossam Ramsey, the album was released in February 2015 followed swiftly by an extensive live tour. Ant Law will be performing at Sheffield’s Millennium Hall on 14th April 2016. PET COMFORT ADVICE: TAKING YOUR PET ON THE OPEN ROAD - PREPARING YOUR PET FOR THE VEHICLE Taking your furry friend on holiday can be a challenge. A traditional package holiday involving airports and packing light doesn’t allow for the same ease as a road trip. One of the beneﬁts of owning a leisure vehicle (e.g. a motorhome) is the fact that your family pet can be taken along for the ride quite easily. However, like people, dogs can suffer from travel sickness caused by the stress of being in a vehicle. Award-winning campervan, caravan and motorhome insurance provider, comfort-insurance.co.uk, has teamed up with Pet Expert and Pet Behaviour Counsellor Kris Glover of Pets in Practise, to offer sound advice for taking your loved family member on the great open road. Preparing your dog for the vehicle A classic sign of anxiety from dogs is dribbling in the vehicle. Being in a vehicle for a long time is not comfortable or natural for dogs, therefore it’s important to acclimatise them to their new surroundings. To lower anxiety, place your pet in the vehicle next to you whilst feeding treats and leaving the door open. The dog shouldn’t feel trapped and having them on the lead will help maintain control. Repeat these sessions but ensure they are short and frequent. Providing familiar bedding and favourite toys will help settle your dog in the vehicle and can be a great alternative to feeding treats. Once the dog is relaxed, the vehicle’s door should be shut. Again, feed treats before letting your pet

out. If you’re satisﬁed your dog is comfortable in the vehicle, you can now feed meals within the leisure vehicle or car but observe from outside so they get used to being inside alone. The last stage should be turning the vehicle’s engine on and allowing it to run whilst your pet is inside eating. A lot of practice and time is needed to help your pet learn to tolerate the vehicle. When this has been achieved, it’s then time to drive a short distance (around 100 metres) with your pet inside with treats, food and its familiar toys alongside. Driving short distances will help your pet get used to the vehicle much faster. Once happy with this, plan a trip with your pet to a destination that is nice for them. Arriving at a fun holiday destination or park will help your pet associate vehicle journeys with positive destinations, rather than ending up somewhere like a veterinary practice – something which most pets don’t look forward to. On top of preparing your pet for the vehicle, it’s important to plan the road trip. Having a route, pre-prepared meals and the vehicle checked before leaving is recommended. Ensure the right level of insurance is covered for any emergencies such as vehicle cover for the motorhome.

ANGLER’S CORNER

Those who contribute to angling magazines and such like always catch, every time they go fishing don’t they? Well, not me. I consider myself an everyday angler, unable to ‘camp’ on the bank, instead snatching a few hours when available, much like most of the angling population, and this week has been a blank…. again, which makes writing a column very awkward! I’ve had two sessions on the same water, a five acre lake, which contains some hefty carp. Earlier in the week, I set out my stall in a bay, into which the carp often drift late in the day as the sun moves over the water. I was hoping to get the rigs in, introduce a bit of bait, and let the swim rest for a few hours until the fish moved in. They didn’t… I noted one or two fish, instead of the usual numbers, so after an hour or two of inactivity, I reeled in to see if I could find some fish. The carp were behind me, nestled in the other bay (typical!) basking in the remnants of the sunshine, firmly ensconced beneath the overhanging branches of a large oak tree, and showing absolutely no interest in the odd mixer or pop up which was flicked towards them. Realistically, it was too late to move as time was against me, so I put in a handful of bait, and left them to it, planning to return later in the week… So I did. I arrived bright and early, pitched up opposite the tree, and stealthily set up two rods, well back from the bank, and flicked out two rigs, without adding any bait to minimise any disturbance. I used a short pop up on one rod, a zig (I hate zigs) on the other to try and cover as much water as possible. Both rigs were tied with my favourite Vardis rig bits, the pop up deposited against the reeds next to the tree, and the zig just below the branches as they kissed the water; I couldn’t fail! Within minutes, I had a couple of bleeps on the pop up, which didn’t develop into a run, then complete silence for the next twelve hours… I don’t mind waiting, but I could see the carp, lazing beneath the branches like itinerant teenagers on the street corner, casually flicking two fins at me as they drifted by, but I couldn’t catch the damn things! I tried varying the length of zig, changing the height of the pop up, changing the bait, changing the bait colour, adding some bait, I even tried a small piece of floating crust with nothing else on the line, and I still couldn’t buy a bite! The only thing I managed to bank during a total of almost 24 hours, was the biggest freshwater mussel I’ve seen in a long time! I had to content myself in the knowledge that no-one else was catching either, but I really have no idea why several carp, almost within touching distance, were not feeding. They didn’t appear to be getting ready to spawn, I couldn’t identify a ‘hatch’ on which they may have been preoccupied, they just weren’t interested. These fish were extremely sensitive to any movement, and despite my best Commando moves, they knew I was there. I even resorted to crawling across to my unhooking mat and laying on it to ensure I didn’t break the skyline, but to no avail. This time, they beat me fair and square, but I will be back, and I will solve the mystery! Otherwise, I’ve also had some new products to look at this week; a box of items from market leader Dinsmores, which need little introduction, and no explanation. Every angler knows Dinsmores, has some of their products in their tackle box, and sees them in almost every retailer throughout the land. These new products arrived to be photographed to provide a portfolio of shots for social media and other outlets, so whilst waiting for a bite, I managed to get some nice images for the company to use. I’ve also had a brand new product which I haven’t seen before, and as yet, I’ve not had chance to use. Stinky Stuff currently comes in four varieties; Original, a meaty feast of flavour, Peeler Crab, Crayfish, and Bubblegum Cream. Marketed as ‘Spray and Stay’ it’s a bait flavouring in an aerosol can, which is pva friendly, super sticky, and super stinky! As always this time of year it has been a busy week in the County Senior League. Games took place on four days, with big games in the League as well as the remaining League Cup Semi-Final. League Cup Semi-Final Jubilee Sports booked their place in the League Cup Final, with a 2-0 win over Wickersley FC at Sandy Lane on Thursday night. Jubilee will face Grimethorpe Sports in the ﬁnal on Monday 25th April at the same venue. Premier Division League leaders Frecheville recorded their seventh away win of the season, as they beat North Gawber Colliery 3-1 at Woolley Miners Welfare. After a busy week, Swinton Athletic moved into second place in the Premier Division. They started the week on Monday night, with a 2-0 home win over Oughtibridge WMFC. They followed that on Wednesday night with a 4-1 away win over previously second placed Houghton Main. Mark Clare was the star for Swinton, scoring three times. Swinton are nine points off the pace, but have played two games less. Wickersley bounced back from their cup exit to record their ﬁrst league win since February. They were 2-1 winners away against Oughtibridge WMFC on Saturday. The win was enough to take Wickersley above Thorpe Hesley and off the foot of the Premier Division table.

COMPREHENSIVE VICTORY, SAYS WARNOCK MILLERS chief Neil Warnock was quick to pay tribute to his side following their comfortable 4-0 victory at fellow relegation rivals Milton Keynes Dons. The Millers opened a nine-point gap between themselves and the hosts, with just ﬁve games to go, following the victory at stadiummk and Warnock was full of his praise for his charges, who earned their sixth win in eight games. “It was a comprehensive victory today and we started well with the goal,” Warnock enthused. “We insisted we that we had got to start well because I’ve been at the other end of the table and you know what it’s like coming to a team ﬁghting for their lives, so it was important we started well and we couldn’t get off to a better start.” The Millers made the perfect start when Matt Derbyshire struck from close range follow-

ing good work by Grant Ward before Leon Best soon doubled their advantage from the spot after Richard Wood was felled by home ‘keeper Cody Cropper. Kirk Broadfoot netted his ﬁrst goal for the club with a superb header before Richie Smallwood put the icing on the cake with a spectacular effort late on - to the delight of the Rotherham supremo. “I thought we grew into the game even though Campy made a couple of brilliant saves. Overall, we missed quite a few good chances but you cannot get too greedy,” Warnock added. “I didn’t talk with Smallwood about his goal, I talked about how he could miss a pointblank header! I’ve forgot about his goal so he may not be too happy when I see him.” The Millers took a large step towards Championship safety with the victory in Buckinghamshire and Warnock has not

been surprised over his side’s recent form, which saw him named March Championship manager of the month last week. “We’ve done well recently.” Warnock enthused. “We don’t concede a lot of goals. Kevin (Blackwell) and Ronnie (Jepson) have worked really hard on the defensive and attacking side of the game and they’ve listened to us. The lads know what we want of them. They know we may get beaten by a bit of skill by an opponent at this level but in general, we are well organised and we’ve got a bit about us. We’ve got ability to score goals and it’s a lovely recipe. “I’m enjoying it. We’ve ﬁve games to go and I’m really enjoying it. “It’s a great run we are on and I want the lads to enjoy it. It shows what you can do with a good group and I think they are amazing themselves with

the ability they have with the ball. It’s a lovely situation at the moment and you’ve got to enjoy it.” The only blot on the Millers copybook saw midﬁeld dynamo Lee Frecklington suffer a recurrence of a calf injury at the end of the ﬁrst half but Warnock is hopeful the injury is not too serious. “He only stiffened up, his calf didn’t go, so hopefully it’s only a couple of weeks but the amount of running he and the likes of Derbyshire has done, is amazing. The Millers chief was also quick to praise the large travelling contingent, who made their way north, in good spirits, following the nature of the victory. “When you have a following like that away, it was important,” Warnock enthused. “To get nearly three thousand today, was a credit to the club. They got behind us today superbly.”

MIDFIELDER MYSTIFIED BY RECENT RUN OF RESULTS Richard Chaplow struggled to comprehend a sixteenth game without a win for Doncaster Rovers as he and his teammates were defeated 1-0 by Bury. The midﬁelder said he had “never known anything like it” during his career. “It’s a tough one to take,” he admitted. “To dominate a game of football and play so well but yet again come off the pitch without any points or goals is tough to take. “We’ve got to pick ourselves back up as we’ve got ﬁve games to try and make something out of the rest of the season and stay in this league and its down to us as players to do that. “I think there’s a lot of lads down, it’s a tough one. It’s sixteen now we’ve gone without winning which is

incredible – I’ve never known anything like it in my career – and it’s been really tough.” Missed opportunities were the source of frustration for Rovers who “gave it their all.” “The lads have given everything, you can’t really ask for much more on or off the ball,” said Chaplow. “There was work rate and creating chances but that final bit of quality in the final third is something we’ve desperately been missing in the last few games. “Maybe we haven’t got the clarity of mind we would have on a winning run but we haven’t been clinical enough in the final third and that’s cost us points. “If you’re winning games and the points are coming in then the chances are hitting the back of the net. When there’s so much riding on them and when

you’re in a rut like we are at the minute, then all of a sudden you don’t trust your instincts and then the chance has gone! “The bottom line is that we’ve got ﬁve games to go and we’ve got to muster something up.

“We’ve got no option but to stick together and hope that the tide turns. It doesn’t matter who’s in front of us now, we’ve just got to win football games and if we play like we did here, we’ll create chances.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 SHARPEN THE MINDS Carlos Carvalhal believes his players learnt valuable lessons on Saturday that will only serve to increase levels across the board in the remaining games. The head coach is confident that defeat at Ashton Gate will sharpen the players’ minds as Wednesday now look to the future. For Carlos, that future is Ipswich Town on Saturday in what will no doubt be a tough fixture with the Tractor Boys still in with a chance to make a late dash for the play-offs. “These things can happen,” he said. “Sometimes this can make everybody more concentrated, more focused and sometimes it’s more important to learn a lesson for the future. “The future for us is on Saturday against Ipswich. “We must fight with heart and aggression with the normal Sheffield Wednesday style. We missed that a little. “The big lesson is if we don’t play with heart, run a lot and fight a lot and even if we don’t play good football, then all the teams can win. It’s what we have said from the beginning.”

Only once this season have the Owls lost back to back league ﬁxtures, either side of the international break back in August/ September against the Championship’s top two Burnley and Middlesbrough. Since then, the head

coach has come to expect a strong reaction from his side and will be looking for this to continue at the weekend. “That is the big lesson and an important moment. Our team usually react very fast and this is what I expect on Saturday.”

WE WILL REACT Carlos Carvalhal said his team would react positively after the Owls’ 4-1 defeat away against Bristol City. Wednesday went 2-0 down early on despite having the first of the game’s chances in the opening exchanges. are losing 3-0.” Wednesday maintained their advantage in the play-offs despite the Robins setback and Carvalhal is keen to focus on the next game as always. He added: “Our next two games are at home, the ﬁrst one is against Ipswich and so this is the most important. “We want to tell the fans who travelled today that we lost the game, but we didn’t lose the team, we are always together. “I can tell them that we will react.”
