GOOD NEWS FOR FAMILIES ON PRIMARY SCHOOL PLACES More children have been given their choice of primary school in Sheffield as admissions results out this week show. In total 6,311 children received a preferred place, an increase on last year’s results. This follows the increase in the number of children being given a place at their chosen secondary school in Sheffield, as reported in March. This week’s results show that more than 97.5 per cent of pupils

starting primary school in September have been given a place in one of their preferred schools, an increase from 97 per cent last year. Sheffield City Council has helped a higher number of families get the place they preferred by providing 95 extra places for children in reception classes for September 2016. The authority is also commissioning more primary places as part of a new through school in the North East of Sheffield, an area where the demand for
places has been highest, as well as a new secondary school in the south west. Jayne Ludlam, Executive Director of Children, Young People & Families at Sheffield City Council, said: “I hope families are pleased with this news and that their children are excited about starting school in September. “We’ve provided extra school places for children in Sheffield and there are more to come, to help us meet the needs of our growing population, I’m very pleased that, once
again, this has resulted in thousands of children being given their preferred school. “Our priority is to keep raising attainment and achievement rates across the city. Getting into your preferred school and having outstanding local schools are key to this.” In total 97.55 per cent of children were allocated one of their three preferences, with 5,826 children – 90.05 per cent – being allocated their first choice. Last year 97.01 per cent were allocated
one of their three choices, with 5,583 – 89.69 per cent – allocated their first choice. Children who were not allocated any of their three preferences have either been referred to their catchment school or been allocated the nearest primary school with places available. Information and advice is available for anyone not satisfied with the school they have been allocated. Parents also have the right to appeal. Appeals take place in June and July. A NEW APPROACH TO MOT TESTING Have you ever wondered if your car really needed all that repair work to pass the MOT Test? You certainly wouldn’t ask the bookie which horse to back so why take your vehicle for MOT at a garage that carries out repairs? weONLYmot, New Edlington Doncaster, offer a brand new & unique approach to the MOT Test. They don’t carry out repairs or servicing so have no interest in making money from work needed to pass the MOT. Established in 2007, the family run business now operates across 9 branches in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire & most recently, New Edlington South Yorkshire. Manager Michelle says “Having carried out more than 250,000
MEADOWHALL RAISES A GLASS TO CELEBRATE HRH’S 90th BIRTHDAY The group, which meets every Monday morning to enjoy some traditional ballroom dancing at the Centre accompanied by a live band, were more than happy to be part of the impromptu royal birthday party in the Queen’s honour, who celebrates her 90th birthday on April 21st. The band also got into the spirit of the celebrations playing “Happy Birthday” as a fitting tribute while the guests – many wearing red, white and blue for the day - tucked into slices of the 90th birthday cakes. Centre Director Darren Pearce,
MOTs, we believe people benefit by shopping around for repair & service costs once they’ve received advice from their local MOT garage at the time of test. Taking your vehicle to an independent MOT station means you control any costs instead of being lumbered with a big bill when you collect your car from the MOT”. Michelle continues “There are often lots of small hidden costs associated with the MOT test that people should be looking out for such as retest costs, prices for bulbs plus the cost to fit them & also prices of headlight adjustment, along with the larger repair costs. There are no retest fees at weONLYmot. We do replace some bulbs but only charge for the bulb at cost price &
headlamp adjustment is offered for free.”. Their newest branch in New Edlington, Doncaster is currently offering MOTs for an introductory price of £30 along with their No Pass No Pay Policy. Michelle said “Along with handing control of road safety costs back to the customer, weONLYmot’s No Pass No Pay policy allows people to make their own decisions about where & when to have repair work done without having to worry about huge costs on MOT day”. For more information about the No Pass No Pay or to book an MOT visit their website Doncaster.weonlymot.co.uk or you can telephone 01709 640009
who also raised a glass at the party, said: “We wanted to mark the occasion and it seemed very fitting to let our Tea Dancers lead the celebrations with so many of them being fans of the Queen, having lived through some of the same experiences over the decades. “And whilst we didn’t manage to get 90 candles on the one cake, it did prove very popular as the group reminisced and enjoyed a few trips down Memory Lane together.” Dennis and Annie Booker, both
85, from Sheffield said: “We’ve been attending the Tea Dance for over 10 years – it’s been a wonderful celebration for the Queen’s birthday, everyone really got into the spirit of it. It was nice to look back over the many years the Queen has been with us.” Margaret Ann Ashton from Wath-upon-Dearne added: “I’ve been attending the Tea Dance for 22 years - I think the Queen is absolutely marvellous, she’s done a wonderful job over the years and she still looks fantastic, I can’t believe she’s going to be 90.”

The doctor says to this fella, “I’ve got bad news and worse news.” He says, “Oh give me the bad news.” He says, “You’ve got 24 hours to live.” “What’s the worse news?” “I forgot to call you yesterday.” I’ve just bought the thickest moisturiser in the world. To be honest it still hasn’t sunk in yet. A lady with a clipboard stopped me in the street the other day. She said, “Can you spare a few minutes for cancer research?” I said, “All right, but we won’t get much done.” As a kid I was made to walk the plank. We couldn’t afford a dog. A father put his 3 year old daughter to bed, told her a story and listened to her prayers which ended by saying, “God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, God bless Grandma and good-bye Grandpa.” The father asked, ‘Why did you say good-bye Grandpa?’ The little girl said, “I don’t know daddy, it just seemed like the thing to do.” The next day grandpa died. The father thought it was a strange coincidence. A few months later the father put the girl to bed and listened to her prayers which went like this, “God bless Mommy, God Bless Daddy and good-bye Grandma.” The next day the grandmother died. “Bloody hell” thought the father, “this kid is in contact with the other side.” Several weeks later when the girl was going to bed the dad heard her say, “God bless Mommy and good-bye Daddy.” He practically went into shock. He couldn’t sleep all night and got up at the crack of dawn to go to his office. He was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch and watched the clock. He figured if he could get by until midnight he would be okay. He felt safe in the office, so instead of going home at the end of the day he stayed there, drinking coffee, looking at his watch and jumping at every sound. Finally midnight arrived; he breathed a sigh of relief and went home. When he got home his wife said, “I’ve never seen you work so late. What’s the matter?” He said, “I don’t want to talk about it, I’ve just spent the worst day of my life.” She said, “You think you had a bad day, you’ll never believe what happened to me. This morning my golf pro dropped dead in the middle of my lesson!”

The former Pop Idol winner will be the first act to perform as part of this year’s Music Live series on Saturday, 14 May following a packed seven race card at the Town Moor venue. The Leave Right Now singer who was crowned Pop Idol champion in 2002, went on to top the charts with his debut album From Now On, selling more than 180,000 copies in the first week. One year on from his Pop Idol triumph, he was nominated for three Brit awards, best pop act, best British breakthrough act and best single for Evergreen. The singer will also perform a raft of songs from his current album, 85% Proof, which is his fourth to reach number one. Last year the racecourse played host to a string of top bands – including ska band Madness, reggae rockers UB40 and New Romantic super-group Spandau Ballet - who entertained thousands of music lovers with their iconic hits. Now Will Young will kick off the 2016 Music Live shows, with Simply Red and Level 42 also due to perform at the racecourse later this year. Kieron Gallagher, executive director at Doncaster Racecourse, said: “Will Young captured the hearts of the nation when he was crowned Pop Idol champion in 2002 and has continued to entertain the British public since with hits including All Time Love. “He will kick start what is set to be a great summer of racing and music to be enjoyed by friends, family and colleagues alike. “We have a fantastic line up of musical

SHEFFIELD MONEY EVOLVES TO MEET CITY’S DEBT NEEDS Sheffield Money has helped more than 1,500 people in its first seven months. Now the company has developed new products in response to the insight it’s gained into Sheffielders’ debt since opening. Rob Shearing, Sheffield Money’s Chief Executive, said: “We’re seeing huge levels of debt in our city. Four out of five people applying for a loan have significant unsecured defaulted debt and for one in four, it’s more than £6,000. “This is crippling. We’ve seen people who have spent all their money on repayments as they’re constantly being hounded by creditors, and they haven’t eaten in days because there’s no money left for food. What’s really shocking is it’s young people we’re seeing the most of, many of whom are in work with young families. “Sheffield Money opened to do something about this and provide a cheaper and fairer alternative for the people of Sheffield. We’ve developed new products to respond to what we’re seeing and we are here to help.” Sheffield Money has supported people to access loans worth more than £90,000 in its first seven months, with most people borrowing around £500. Taken over 11 months, a
typical repayment is £12.50 per week compared to more than £21 if they’d gone one of the many high cost lenders charging much higher interest rates. The organisation has also provided people with money and debt advice and set up bank and savings accounts. Now the company offers debt solutions which can put an immediate stop to constant calls from creditors. It also offers new loans which are cheaper than more expensive online payday lenders, but with the same convenience that people value. Customers are now able to apply online at Sheffield Money and have money in their bank accounts within approximately 20 minutes. Rob added: “People are using short-term loans to bridge the gap until payday so we developed a cheaper online alternative. The loans have higher interest rates than our other products but they’re still significantly less than many money-lending companies. Jonathon Booth, aged 31 from Woodhouse, used Sheffield Money to get a loan. He’d just started a new job so stopped receiving benefits but was waiting to get paid and needed money for food. He got this through a loan from Sheffield Money which he also used to pay off a County Court Judgment debt.
Jonathon said: “Without Sheffield Money it would have been a real struggle to carry on. I would have probably gone somewhere else to borrow money but would have paid a lot more. I’ve used these places before and missed a payment and they go into your bank and take all of your money in one go. Sheffield Money isn’t like that and they offered me a better rate. It was better than any of the other pawnbrokers or money shops – more affordable. “I don’t think I would have paid off the CCJ without Sheffield Money but it shows you can achieve things if people are willing to help you. They actually understand and don’t judge you. You can feel wary of going into these places but I never felt that with them. I just felt welcome and they’re so friendly and helpful. That’s what it’s about – being able to trust the people who you need to help you.” Sheffield Money was set up by a city partnership led by the Sheffield Partnership Board and supported by Sheffield City Council. For more information visit www.sheffieldmoney.co.uk, call 0114 399 5555 or pop into the city centre branch at 70 Cambridge Street.

TO GET AGE IS JUST A NUMBER FOR JUNE STRUGGLING TO THE LIBRARY? Having enjoyed an active life over the years, and with medical training under her belt in her younger days, June decided that working in care was something that she’d like to explore in her golden years. Despite being in her 70‟s at that point, she still felt sprightly and fit and keen to keep working. “I’d approached an agency and basically I was told I was getting on a bit to work in care. I came away from that experience thinking I was just too old to do the job” said June. “Then I saw an advert for jobs with Home Instead and saw that they did care for older people. I thought I’d nothing to lose to try somewhere else but at the bottom of my heart I worried
that my age was going to be a barrier even though I thought I’d be really good at being a carer” That was over four years ago now, June’s life skills and experience make her a perfect fit for the companionship service that Home Instead Senior Care provide. June is now a regular CAREGiver to four clients. She said “I’m not 80-years old, I’m 80 years young. I love this job because I love going out to meet people and love to-do things that matter to people. I do that while I’m chatting about olden days or whatever they like to talk about” For more information about Home Instead Senior Care contact them on 0114 246 9666.

it as being “innovative and inspiring”. CLIVE BETTS MP MARKS £2MILLION SHEFFIELD INVESTMENT IN GLASS RECYCLING One of Europe’s most advanced glass recycling facilities marked a major investment milestone recently as Clive Betts, Chair of the House of Commons Communities and Local Government Committee and MP for Sheffield South East, visited leading recycling, resource and energy recovery business Viridor. The visit marked the completion of a recent £2 million investment at the Sheffield glass recycling facility at Salmon Pastures, making a total investment of some £6.7m in recent years. Recycling glass from over thirty-nine partners including ten local authorities, the facility manages the equivalent of over 132 million wine bottles each year. The high-tech site recycles 97% of the material arriving on site, working with partners to ‘complete the glass recycling loop’ for brands such as Heineken, Budweiser, Jacobs Creek wines and the Scotch Whisky industry as well as food and pharmaceutical packaging for brands such as Gaviscon. The facility also supports the local economy providing 24 full time jobs and two apprenticeships in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering to HNC level. Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield South East said: "I was very impressed with my visit to the glass recycling facility Viridor in Sheffield. The investment in the site not only benefits Sheffield but also other cities and business outside of Sheffield as well. Recyling is a very important issue and having modern facilities like this one allows it to be carried out in an efficient and environmentally friendly way." Featuring advanced technology from across the globe, the facility encompasses some 12 optical sorters,
delighted to be giving young people a free platform to get their businesses off the ground and showcase their creative talents. I’d encourage any creative young person to get involved with The Teenage Market as there are so many positive opportunities that can come out of it.” Local ‘Champion’ of the Sheffield Teenage Market, Louise Haigh MP, commented: “Young people’s inventiveness and creativity can contribute a real dynamism in terms of enterprise, which this project hopes to nurture. This is an exciting project and I look forward to working with the FSB, local councils, schools, colleges and universities to bring the best out of our city’s students, by building the skills and opportunities needed to start new businesses and help make Sheffield the real heart of the Northern revival.”
Ben Wright added: “We would urge people in Sheffield and surrounding areas to come out and support local young traders and performers by visiting the Sheffield Teenage Market at the Peace Gardens on Saturday 11 June 2016.” Young people aged 12 - 29 who wish to apply to be a trader or performer can do so online at www. theteenagemarket.co.uk. over a mile of specialist conveyor belts and three floors of processing towers all of which refine the quality of the glass. The investment added a further four advanced optical sorters, that add to an already impressive portfolio, these sorters use X-ray and infrared technology to sort the glass, filtering out unwanted items such as ceramics, stones, porcelain (CSP), plastics, leaded glass, glass ceramic and metals from the end product; glass cullet. As a result of the investment the facility has successfully achieved the ‘End of Waste’ accreditation for the glass produced. This is an external quality standard that recognises processing facilities that have the ability to transfer waste material into a product and out of the waste cycle. The Sheffield facility joins the elite ranks of only two processing facilities of this kind in the UK. The project team that implemented the technology solution to reduce reject material worked 3,500 man hours on the installation, with normal production continuing ensuring no disruption to customers or the recycling supply chain. Richard Jenkins, Viridor’s Regional Director for North, added: “We were delighted to welcome Clive to what is one of the UK’s most advanced glass recycling facilities and to mark our latest £2m investment to keep Sheffield at the cutting edge of this circular economy success story. Glass is infinitely recyclable and recycling makes a clear economic, environmental and social contribution to the region. In addition to marking the investment in technology, we we’re delighted to mark our investment in people through our latest two local apprentices. Site staff warmly welcomed Clive to the site and we were delighted he took time to chat about careers in the green economy. With Sheffield linking to a network of 46 recycling, resource and energy hubs across the North, Sheffield takes our investment in the North West to over £800 million in recent years.”

CROOKES SOCIAL CLUB “LEAP FORWARD” TO SAVE LIVES IN CROOKES On April the 30th members and friends of Crookes Social Club will leap forward from Millersadle Viaduct in Derbyshire to raise funds to help buy 2 defibrillators for the Crookes area. The first unit will be located at Crookes Club and the second will be in a secure cabinet located on Crookes itself. These machines will be available for anyone who needs them. Like all emergency equipment you cannot plan for when you will need a defibrillator but this charity abseil will make sure one is available for all residents and visitors to Crookes whenever they will need one. So for over 20 people have signed up for the abseil to be held on April the 30th. The event has been organised with
the generous help of Bold Adventures of Bolsterstone, Sheffield who will on the day provide training and equipment needed and carry out all necessary safety checks. With a target of over £3000 needing to be raised to fund these units the club are asking for anyone with an adventurous streak to sign up and help us raise funds for these lifesaving machines. The cost for anyone wanting to join the abseil is only £15 and the club are asking those taking part to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. Maurice Champeau manager of Crookes Club says “If we can get 60 people to take part in the abseil we can hit our target of £3000 in one day and these lifesaving machines can be installed as soon as possible.
A recent incident at the club meant we needed a defib unit and one was not available. The first minutes after a heart attack are crucial to the survival of the casualty. The fact the no defib was available on Crookes made saving this gentleman’s life that much more difficult. If we at the club can help one person survive, then abseiling from a 100ft bridge is a small price to pay. Following a work accident several years ago I personally have a morbid fear of heights but I intend to overcome this to raise money for this worthwhile cause.” Anyone wishing to take part in the abseil or willing to donate to this invaluable case is asked to contact the club on 01142660114. crrokesclub@ hotmail.co.uk
ANTIQUES QUARTER BOOK LAUNCH PRODUCTION HERO REQUIRED PRODUCE TRACK/VIDEO FOR CHARITY RECORD CELEBRATES ‘A LIFETIME IN ANTIQUES’ TO SUPPORTING THE HEADWAY BRAIN INJURY CHARITY The next Vintage Market in the Antiques Quarter will take place on Sunday 24th April 11-5 and as well as the usual plethora of vibrant stalls inside and out, at the Abbeydale Picture House, they will be celebrating the exciting launch of a recent book written by local Antiques dealer Norman Salt. Norman has been a dealer in Antiques for over 50 years and ‘A Life Time in Antiques’ is a selection of 30 delightful and funny stories written by Norman over the last 12 months and depicting his time in the trade from his youth to the present day. From experiences with stuffed leopards, paranormal encounters
to priceless discoveries as well as tricks of the trade, Norman’s passion and the pleasure he quite clearly derives from his lifetime in antiques pours out of every chapter. Norman with son Christopher runs Salts Antiques on Barmouth Road in the Antiques Quarter. As well dealing in antiques and an avid collector of antique arms and armour Norman specialises in the restoration of tin cars and ran the Derbyshire Toy Museum with wife Annette in the 1980’s. Norman’s great interest and love for the trade is depicted in this witty collection of encounters and the book is dedicated to his adored wife Annette who after a short
illness in 2014 passed away on December 1st 2014. All proceeds from the book will be donated to Ashgate hospice in Chesterfield who also received donations of £500 from the quarter’s last vintage market at Christmas. Norman’s book is a delightful read and a fascinating insight impossible to put down till read cover to cover. The Market is held at the iconic 1920’s Abbeydale Picture House which recently opened their doors to a new café heralding a real future for the venue for not only cinema events but as a unique entertainment venue in the quarter and for the city.

Download Festival Announces More Acts! By Kt Evans
Spring has sprung…thank the heavens above for that! Finally, we are in sniffing distance of spending our sunny months hungover in a field, sipping strongbox like water and living off a diet of pringles and burger van chips…and we simply cannot wait! With Download Festival being one of our very first events on the summer’s calendar, the three day spectacular has announced yet more bands to its line-up, held from 10th – 12th June 2016. If you have yet to experience the enigma that is Download Festival, we strongly suggest you get on board for this year’s action, once again held at Donnington Park. With well over 100,000 tickets sold to the event every year, Download is the ultimate rock mecca. Headlining positions this year go to the mighty Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Rammstein, alongside the likes of All Time Low, Deftones, Saxon, Billy Talent and Disturbed to name but a few. With a tonne of different alternative genres to get you in the mood for a party, the festival has delivered us with yet more names to tantalise our ear drums in June.
First up, UK metal powerhouse Raging Speedhorn, who last graced Download over ten years ago. Forming in Northampton, the group have released six studio albums, with their newest record, “Lost Ritual” set for release in July 2016. With hits to include “Thumper” and “The Gush,” we cannot wait to give the five piece a legendary welcome back. Alongside these, Wearing Scars, the super group mashup of Mutiny Within and Sacred Mother Tongue. Their debut album, “A Thousand Words” was released in 2015 and got the international metal scene well and truly hyped up. Nu-Metal giants From Ashes To New have also been added to this year’s Download Festival, which will be the groups very first performance at the event. Bringing together old-school rap lyrics with a modern day twist, we have a sneaking suspicion these are going to be one of the weekend’s highlights. Download Festival is held at Donnington Park from 10th – 12th June 2016. Check out the website www. downloadfestival.co.uk. A three day ticket including camping costs £215 and can be purchased through all major ticket outlets. See the website for details.
VANT FLY-BY INTO THE PLUG Having played a blistering sold out NME Awards show at The Lexington, London-via-Seaham quartet Vant have also recently celebrated their new single ‘Fly-By Alien’ been named as Radio 1’s Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World. They arrive in Sheffield this week, performing at The Plug on Saturday 23rd April. Produced by the band’s regular collaborator Sam Miller, ‘Fly-By Alien’ is a maelstrom of irrepressible melody, focused aggression and frontman Mattie Vant’s vehement vocal delivery. Blurring the lines between a contemporary update of punk and grunge, it’s a track that reiterates why many critics are drawing positive comparisons with artists such as Pixies, Manic Street Preachers, The Strokes and DFA 1975. “Fly-By Alien is about an extraterrestrial travelling through the universe to find a planet that can support life,” says vocalist/guitarist Mattie Vant. “The alien stumbles upon Earth and contemplates destroying the planet but instead leaves its residents with a transmission of hope: ‘You have a meaning, you have a purpose / This life is short, make sure it’s worth it.’” Now available to download and stream, ‘Fly-By Alien’ was also be available on 7” luminous vinyl as part of this year’s Record Store Day event last week. In the space of just three releases (‘Parasite’ / ‘Do You Know Me?’, ‘The Answer’ and ‘Parking Lot’) VANT have already developed a growing reputation as proponents of songs that are short, sharp and
socially aware remedies to the ignorance of most modern consumerist pop music. As a result, VANT have been widely tipped as a band that are set to make a major breakthrough in 2016. 2016 has started just as strongly. So far they’ve played Radio 1’s Future Festival as one of an exclusive selection of hotly tipped new artists, and the DIY Presents: Ahoy 2016 showcase at European music platform Eurosonic Nooderslag (where 3FM named VANT the number one live act to see in 2016).
Catch Vant at The Plug on Matilda Street this Saturday 23rd April. Tickets and more details are available at www.the-plug.com
NOTHING BUT THIEVES Live Review Nothing But Thieves - Leadmill - 11/4/16 by Amira Nazir
Nothing But Thieves are an alternative rock five piece, formed in Southend-on-Sea in 2012. Made up of Conor Mason (vocals), Joe LangridgeBrown (guitar), Dom Craik (guitar), Phil Blake (Bass) and James Price (drums), the quintet certainly did not disappoint with their blinding set at The Leadmill on the 11th of April. They’re the band on everyone’s lips at the moment as they set the airwaves ablaze with ‘Wake Up Call’ and storm the charts with their incredible debut album. The release of their self-titled debut on 23rd October 2015 also marked the beginning of their first UK and European tour. With such a fresh sound it's hard not to already have very high standards entering a Nothing But Thieves gig, despite this, newcomers Black Foxxes and the delightful Sundara Karma succeeded in warming up the crowd and left everyone eager for the main event. A particular highlight was 'Flame' by Sundara Karma which had the audience alight and on their feet dancing. Nothing But Thieves then came on stage to roars of anticipation and performed their well known hit "Itch". It begins with a dark, sobering vibe peppered with electronic keys, which soon parts way letting
the striking guitar-heavy chorus have centre stage. Conor’s vocals add a completely new element and really make the track: think soaring, commanding and certainly rock-inspired. This was most definitely a crowd-pleaser, and it was brilliant to hear live the track that first introduced me, and many others, to the band. The vocals can definitely be described as influenced by Matt Bellamy at times, which makes sense as Nothing But Thieves are currently on tour supporting Muse whilst juggling their own headline tour. 'Graveyard Whistling' showed off the band's range in sound, with a definite contrast between heavier guitar moments and almost angelic vocals, it was an all round favourite of the nights set. Another track from the album was ‘If I Get High’ and was rapturous and chill-enducing in the way it built up. The layers of guitars and drum beats gradually come more to the fore and provide an understated backdrop to the enchanting vocals, which had the audience mesmerised. Last but by no means least was 'Ban all the music', a fitting end to an unforgettable live performance. All the crowd sang alongside Conor one final time and the band gave it everything to finish on an absolute high note. Nothing But Thieves are no doubt one of the greatest new music discoveries to have come out of last year and I know I won't be the only one eagerly anticipating their return to sheffield hopefully some time soon.

NEW RESEARCH SHOWS WHY DRIVERS ‘HIT AND RUN’ An interim independent research report, conducted by the Department of Criminology at the University of Leicester, is starting to identify the reasons why motorists ‘hit and run’. The research has been commissioned by MIB which compensates the innocent victims of accidents with uninsured and ‘hit and run’ drivers.
injury was sustained and in just over 10% of these accidents a ‘hit and run’ driver was involved. There are serious consequences for drivers who leave the scene of an accident and often their victims and families suffer potentially long-term physical and emotional impacts which can have significant financial implications. Successful interventions have been implemented by the government, MIB and the insurance industry to tackle the issue Survey responses from drivers convicted of uninsured driving and as a consequence of ‘hit and run’ offences revealed the of these, MIB estimates that the number of following: uninsured drivers has fallen from 2 million in 2005 to 1 million in 2016. The MIB is 50% did not think the accident was serious concerned that a reduction of a similar scale enough to report or they did not think that has not emerged with ‘hit and run’ drivers. they had to report the accident (of this, 29% Despite the obvious consequences of ‘hit and did not think it was serious enough and 21% were unaware of their responsibility to report run’ offences there is a lack of academicbased research which identifies driver an accident). behaviours and motivations. This insight 45% of those convicted would have stopped could be used to develop interventions and and reported the incident if they had known that they had committed an offence by leaving preventative strategies. Ashton West OBE, Chief Executive of the scene of the accident. MIB, explained: “Being involved in an 16 to 34 year olds were more likely to accident can be an unsettling and traumatic leave the scene of an accident because they experience which is made worse when the were not insured, they had been drinking, other driver doesn’t stop. Older drivers (over 34 years old) were more “Until now we have focused very much on likely to leave the scene if they did not think dealing with the problem of driving without the accident was serious enough to report. 6% of younger drivers (aged 16 -34) said that nothing would have made them stop and report the accident - they were determined to get away with the offence. The public plays an important role in tracing ‘hit and run’ drivers: over 50% of respondents TAKE A LOOK AT OUR were traced through pedestrians and other drivers who witnessed the accident. insurance. Whilst the level of uninsured driving in the UK has halved in the last 10 years, the number of claims reported to the MIB from ‘hit and run’ incidents has not fallen by anywhere near this amount. “We are working to raise awareness of ‘hit and run’ offences and the impact on society with the ultimate aim of bringing the number of incidents down. The completion of this independent research will provide useful insights which we will share with the government, police, the insurance industry and other interested bodies so that we can take action to tackle this problem together.” Commenting on the interim findings Dr Matt Hopkins, Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester, said: “As relatively little previous work in relation to ‘hit and run’ accidents has included any personal engagement with offenders, this research is fairly novel. “Of course, these findings have to be treated with caution, but they do begin to highlight some of the reasons why drivers leave the scene of an accident. For a number of drivers there is clearly confusion about the legal requirement to report an accident, but importantly, some differences are observed between younger and older drivers that could be developed into preventative strategies. Further work is required to gain more detailed understanding of driver motivations to leave the scene from across a range of accident types. This is where the next stage of the research will focus.”

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I fancied a day at Gawsworth Fisheries in Cheshire this week, and opted to set up my stall on the very pretty Lodge Lake, a two acre pool, surrounded by reeds, and within hearing distance of the chimes of the village church; idyllic. I love to fish a maggot feeder with a long hook length, which is cast out to about sixty yards, and then it’s just a case of waiting for the ‘tip to hoop over as the ravenous chub hit the bait on the drop. It’s super fun, and when the chub are really feeding, it’s possible to put a mighty weight together. So, suitably tackled up, unfortunately, my first cast clipped the tree above, and promptly shattered the push in tip of my Sonik S3! I didn’t have any of the spare tips with me, so a change of tactics was required…not a good start! Luckily, the S3 system offers a range of options, so I selected the 1.5lb Specialist rod, and set up a long range feeder float, which I hoped would hit the same distance. A simple paternoster rig is the easiest way to attach one of these floats to the line, and with just a No. 8 shot to sink the hook link, I was ready to go. A pair of lively maggots were speared on a size 16 hook, a pinch of groundbait added to the base of the float, and the whole lot was punched out and feathered down onto the water. I like to feather the cast when fishing this method, as I often detect bites by watching the line rather than the float, and it also allows faster contact with the fish. The float hits the surface with a fair old splash, and I know I can expect bites within a second or two, and so it proved when the line pulled taught, and my first fish of the day, a healthy roach of about 7oz, was duly hooked. This can be a speedy method to add weight to the net, (I had special permission to use a keepnet for an hour or two) and it’s a very busy way to fish, but also great fun! The bites continued, and alternating between maggot, caster and bread, I managed to add more roach, bream, rudd and ide to the tally, but only managed one bonus chub, a fine fish of around 3lb, to my final score of about 80lb of fish. I guess that using a maggot feeder gets the bait down below the waiting hordes of roach and rudd, but with the float, I had no choice but to pick up whatever took the bait, and the smaller fish often got there first. I also tried the new Stinky Stuff aerosol additive I
mentioned last week; it stinks (obviously) and I’m of the opinion that as it’s a spray, the larger surface area of the actual additive is more likely to disperse quickly through the water around your baits. I have further investigations to complete, but the signs are good; a word of warning however, don’t get it on your hands, it takes ages to come off… and my dog won’t stop licking me! I did note that the angler on the adjacent peg managed to pick up five or six chub to my solitary chevin, and realised that he was fishing a big chunk of flake which was slowly falling through the water. By putting on a big piece, it got through the small fish without being whittled away, and to the waiting chub just below, but although he caught more chub, overall he caught less fish…it depends which you prefer really? Either way, both of us enjoyed a great day in the sunshine! Find the fishery at www.gawsworth-fisheries.co.uk

WARNOCK HAPPY WITH A POINT Rotherham United boss Neil Warnock admitted he felt that his side could have recorded victory in the wake of the 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest but was happy to add another point to the club’s tally for the 2015/16 season. The Millers stretched their unbeaten run to nine games but there was nothing to separate them from a resilient Forest side in South Yorkshire. Millers defender Richard Wood had two golden opportunities to edge his side in front in a tightly contested affair on Saturday which caused his manager to joke that his centre half could have claimed a hat-trick with his chances, but took time to pay tribute to his upturn in form since the turn of the year.
“I still don’t know how Wood has not taken the match ball home with him today. He had five good chances, whereas normally he would be lucky to get one,” Warnock explained. “Wood has had a good game today, he has not played much since Christmas, and he is coming on strong at the end of the season.” “You could see the effort the lads put in today. We were a little bit sloppy first half, we changed two or three things at half time, and I thought we did improve.” “I thought we could dominate the second half and to an extent we did, having a few chances – I was pleased with the second half.” Forest fashioned their most notable chance of the game late on when Ryan Mendes escaped
the attentions of the Millers rearguard, but he was thwarted by another top save from goalkeeper Lee Camp. The Millers boss believes his side grew into the game against Paul Williams’ Forest, who he believes are in a false position in the second tier. “We gave Mendes a bit too much room to start with, but we altered that, and I think we definitely improved in the second half,” Warnock added. “Having said that Camp has pulled off three or four good saves and overall I would say it was a fair result.” “You could see the quality of the side on their team sheet, they deserve more than the 40 odd points they have.” The draw means the Millers
remain nine clear of the MK Dons, who drew at Preston, with only four games remaining in the Sky Bet Championship. The Millers could secure their place in the second tier for next season with a win over Huddersfield Town in midweek, however, Warnock does not want his side to get complacent. “It would be nice to put it to bed on Tuesday, but I do not want us to relax, I really want this club to finish as high as they can,” he explained. “Tuesday will be a big game for us and then Wolves on Saturday, but they are great games and I am still enjoying every moment. “It was a disappointment not to get three points today and shoot up the table, but we will take we have got now and the club is
HALFORD KEEN TO CONTINUE MILLERS RUN Midfield enforcer Greg Halford says Rotherham United’s rise up the Sky Bet Championship table under boss Neil Warnock is one of the most remarkable upturns in form that the second tier has seen in recent years. Halford, who has been employed in a shielding role under the new Millers boss, is hoping his side can continue to record results similar to those that saw them top the form tables in the second tier earlier this month. “It’s massive and it’s one of the biggest turnarounds I’ve seen in this league for a very long time
and hopefully we can keep that going until the end of the season,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “It’s completely changed since the manager has come in and the atmosphere is great and everyone is getting along. There’s a lot more banter flying around the changing rooms and it’s all good. “If the players are getting along with each other and the banter continues then it stands us in good stead on the pitch.” The former Nottingham Forest and Sunderland man has been given a new lease of life as an extra ring of steel in the
Millers’ rearguard and insists that he has started developed an understanding with the other defensive players in the squad. “That’s why I’m in there, to break up play and help the two centre backs out as much as possible,” Halford explained. “I think we’ve got a good understanding as well, whether that be with Richard Wood or Lloyd Doyley in there alongside Kirk. “It’s been good so far and I’m enjoying playing again.” The Millers boosted their survival hopes with an emphatic win
over Milton Keynes Dons last weekend and Halford admitted he was pleased to see marked improvement at both ends of the pitch. “We’ve looked dangerous on counter-attacks for a number of games now and in all honesty it could have been six or seven at MK Dons, yet we only had 33% of the possession throughout the game,” he added. “The atmosphere was great down there and it seemed like there were more away fans than home on the day. That’s how much noise they made and all credit to them.”
leader. It means I’ve got to work hard, because if you work hard as a captain then everyone else will, it’s like a domino effect.” Joe’s father Daral Pugh may also be known amongst Rovers fans as he made 154 appearance for
the club between 1977-1982. “My dad takes a bit of a back seat role actually, but he’s inspired me a lot. He’s been a great role model to me over the years and has always been supportive. He keeps me grounded and keeps my feet on the floor. I appreciate that.” The young striker is also a former participant with Rovers in the Community which is now known as Club Doncaster Foundation.
PUGH SIGNS UP Looking to follow in the footsteps of Harry Middleton, Mitchell Lund and Liam Mandeville who also came through the club’s youth academy, Joe (son of former Rover Daral Pugh) has signed a one year deal with the club and will be a part of the first team squad next season. “It was tough at the beginning because I was injured for about 4 months and I didn’t think I would be fit in time to play this season,” he said. “But I came back, played well and obviously did enough to impress which I’m delighted about.” Pugh left Premier League Hull City last season before signing for Doncaster as a first year scholar in February. Since then, despite being hit by injury, he has gone on to impress for both the Under 18 and the Development side.
“I left Hull because I wasn’t enjoying my football. I wanted to be somewhere I knew I’d enjoy football again and get games every week but I’m a local lad too. BLADES NEWS2015/16 GAFFER ON DERBY SUCCESS Nigel Adkins was full of praise for his players following Saturday’s impressive 3-0 victory over Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium. First-half goals from Alex Baptiste and Che Adams followed by Billy Sharp’s 19th of the season in the second-half paved the way for United to take
all three points from the trip to Derbyshire. And Adkins was delighted with what he saw, remarking: “The players played well, it is another victory, three clean sheets on the spin and an unchanged team for a third consecutive week. “The supporters were right behind the
players, we scored three goals and comfortably won a local derby, so it was a good day all round.” The Blades boss is encouraged by how strong his team are finishing the Sky Bet League One campaign. He added: “We were on the front foot, we could have scored more goals, should
have really, but we were also solid defensively and played some good football too. “Coutts and Hammond complimented each other well, as did Sharp and Adams. We have built some partnerships and hopefully moving forward we can have more consistency in team selection because undoubtedly it has helped in recent weeks. “We now move on to the next game, we will take stock and go to Shrewsbury with a positive mindset and full of confidence. “I want us to be the fittest team in the division, it takes time but we are in a lot better place now and that will only improve in the future.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 MORE POSITIVES CARLOS EXTENDS CONTRACT THAN NEGATIVES Carlos Carvalhal said there were more positives than negatives to take from the Owls’ 1-1 draw with Ipswich at Hillsborough. Fernando Forestieri opened the scoring in the first half before teenager Andre Dozzell headed in the equaliser after the break. Carvalhal said: “There was only one negative from today’s game and that was the score. “We showed a lot of positives by our reaction from the last game, and the reaction after Ipswich scored. “They are good team who have ambitions in this league and we played very well against them. “If we’d taken a couple of our chances then we’d be talking about the win because all of the players had a good game.” The Owls remain five points clear of Cardiff in seventh place and the head coach feels that his team are now in a stronger position
than before today’s contest. He added: “We now have four games left and we are the same points ahead of Cardiff that we were before the game. “This means we are in a stronger
position and we want to keep focusing so that we always improve our situation. “We are in a good way and now we get ready to play a tough match against Milton Keynes on Tuesday.”
Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal has extended his current contract at Hillsborough. The Portuguese has proved a popular figure in S6 having engineered the Owls’ ascent into the top six of the Championship after joining in the summer of 2015. Carvalhal brought a wealth of experience to Hillsborough having led a raft of high profile clubs across Europe, including the likes
of Besiktas, Sporting Lisbon and Braga. The Owls have since adapted a brand of free-flowing football in keeping with the remit of chairman Dejphon Chansiri, who told swfc. co.uk: “I am delighted that Carlos will be staying with Sheffield Wednesday. I am sure our supporters will also welcome this news as Carlos has led a complete overhaul of the style football we play, particularly at
Hillsborough. “The brief was for the team to play exciting, aggressive and entertaining football, which has been delivered. Carlos Carvalhal signing autographs “I look forward to working with Carlos both now and in the future.” Carvalhal’s backroom staff have also extended their current contracts at the club.

Owls forward Marco Matias has won the Mitre Goal of the Year at the Football League Awards 2016. Matias received the award at the gala ceremony at Manchester Central on Sunday evening in front of over 600 guests from clubs, sponsors and the football industry. With a total of over 4,800 goals scored in Football League competitions in 2015, each of the 72 Football League clubs nominated their best goal from the 2015 calendar year. In conjunction with Mitre and the viewers of Channel 5’s Football League Tonight show, the goals were narrowed down to a shortlist of five, with the overall winner being decided by a vote on the night at The Football League Awards. Matias’ stunner against Leeds United at Elland Road was voted as the pick of the bunch and
delighted to be named the winner, he said: “I am very proud and want to thank Sheffield Wednesday, the supporters, my family and everybody in the
