SKY RIDE RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD FOR ANOTHER YEAR OF TRAFFIC-FREE CYCLING The streets of Sheffield will be closed to traffic as thousands of people descend on the city in celebration of all things cycling at Sky Ride Sheffield. Sky Rides are mass participation, cycling events which take over the city centre so that cyclists of all ages and abilities can ride safely together on a traffic-free route. With a real festival atmosphere, they’re a fun day out for families and friends to enjoy, with loads to do both on and off a bike, and completely free.

Registration is now open for Sky Ride Sheffield and as its always a popular event people are encouraged to register their free place at GoSkyRide.com ahead of the event and to make sure their family and friends do the same. Those who register can take advantage of special offers and will even get a free bike check before the event. Since hosting its first Sky Ride event in 2014, 7,000 participants have taken part in the Sheffield event, which along with British

Cycling and Sky’s other cycling initiatives has helped to increase the cycling activity of local residents leading to a saving of more than £360,000 in healthcare costs related to inactivity. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council said: “Sky Ride is a perfect example of how people can be physically active and ‘Move More’ while having a great time with family and friends. In Sheffield – The Outdoor City, our unique offer of city life and the

outdoors gives plenty of opportunities to lead an active and adventurous lifestyle. This year we want more people than ever to take part in Sky Ride, to experience the fun and freedom of cycling on traffic-free roads and to be inspired to make cycling part of their day to day life.” People will be able to hop on at any point throughout the route and can complete as many laps as they can fit in. And this year for the first time the event will take over Endcliffe Park with lots of fun activities,

plus live entertainment and food and drink stalls for those who need an energy boost. In addition to Sky Ride, British Cycling continue to work with Sheffield City Council to offer lots more cycling opportunities in 2016 with Sky Ride Local, local guided rides; Ride Social, a great way to buddy up and ride with like-minded cyclists; Breeze bike rides for women; and Go-Ride, British Cycling’s development programme for children.

OLDER PEOPLE NEED MORE PROTEIN THE HUMAN LIBRARY Older adults need double the recommended daily protein intake in order to stay fit and healthy, according to new research. Adults over the age of 65 should also take part in high-density exercise, such as weightlifting, in order to increase their chances of living a longer and healthier life. The scientists, at the University of Stirling, say current nutrition guidelines should be re-drawn for older adults as they are based on data taken from much younger people. They say people over the age of 65 need 50-90 per cent more protein with each meal than younger people to prevent sarcopenia – a gradual loss of muscle mass common in older age that can lead to physical disability. They also say physical activity guidelines should recommend more vigorous exercises for OAPs to discourage prolonged periods of muscle disuse. Dr Oliver Witard, senior lecturer in health and exercise science at the University of Stirling, said: “The government recommendations are focused on telling us what our minimum protein intake should be and are not tailored towards our

optimal intake. “The RDA is also based on data taken from young adults, not older adults. For young adults of typical body size, the recommended 20-25g of protein per meal is sufficient, but older adults may require at least upwards of 30g – and more towards 40g of protein per meal. “The current physical activity recommendations are broad – essentially 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week, which includes gentle exercise, such as gardening or walking. “Added to these general recommendations, we advocate the inclusion of resistance training – for example weightlifting, which is very important for maintaining muscle mass. Also high-intensity interval training.” Nutritionist Emma Conroy agreed with the findings, saying: “What may be adequate for a healthy, young adult cannot be assumed to have the same effect in the elderly, and indeed it seems that larger amounts of protein are needed in an elderly person to build muscle or protect existing muscle tissue. “For some individuals, there will be a place for a protein powders, to add to meals, or have as a protein drink.”

HELP CONSERVE OUR WAR MEMORIALS People in Sheffield are being urged to play a part in conserving and protecting their local war memorials as part of a project to commemorate the First World War. The programme aims to inspire local communities across the country to survey and conserve their local war memorials to ensure that by the end of the centenary of the First World War, in 2018, as many war memorials as possible are in good condition and ‘fitting tributes to the fallen’. With the help of Civic Voice, one of the four partner organisations running the programme, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Civic Trust are working together with volunteers across the city to record the condition of all war memorials. Funding is available for the repair and conservation of memorials, but help is needed to find them and record their condition first, using a simple survey. And people are being asked to attend two workshops in Sheffield on May 5 and May 11 to find out more. With around 350 known war memorials in Sheffield there is no better time to make sure the tributes in the city are ‘fit for heroes’. Judi Siddall, war memorials officer at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are holding workshops throughout Sheffield to introduce the project and train volunteers on how to record the condition of war memorials. We would like as many people as possible to come along.”

Paul Bedwell, membership officer of Sheffield Civic Trust said: “If people from every area of the city were to undertake a simple survey of their local war memorial the result could be that all of the county’s memorials could be in really good condition by 2018 when the real commemoration of the end of the war takes place.’’ If you would like to attend a workshop, reserve your free place by visiting www. civicvoice.org.uk/get-involved/events or contact info@civicvoice.org.uk

Zest in Sheffield are organising this event during May. The Human Library is an international equalities movement that challenges prejudice and discrimination through social contact. It uses the language and mechanism of a library to facilitate respectful conversations that can positively change people’s attitudes and behaviours towards members of our communities who are at risk of exclusion and marginalisation. Just like in a real library, a visitor to the Human Library can choose a Book from a range of titles. The difference is that Books are people, and reading is a conversation. Zest are looking for ‘books’ (people) who represent the older community in Sheffield. These people would need to feel comfortable talking about their beliefs, values and life and to answer questions from people about what it’s like to be older and living in Sheffield. Full training will be provided for all volunteers. The event would last 4 hours and the training 2 hours. For more information contact Megan Drury on 0114 270 2040 ext.145

DRIVERS' ILLEGAL BABY BOY BORN ON MOBILE PHONE USE MOTORWAY HARD RIFE, POLL SUGGESTS SHOULDER The vast majority of motorists regularly spot other drivers illegally using a handheld mobile phone while they are behind the wheel, the results of a new RAC survey suggest. The findings have prompted the motoring organisation to call on the Government to fund a high-profile public awareness campaign in a bid to combat the problem. Almost two-thirds (64%) of those questioned say they witnessed at least one other motorist illegally using a phone during their last hour on the road. And all but 5% say they regularly see another driver looking at a phone while they are in stationary traffic. When it comes to their own behaviour, meanwhile, nearly a third (29%) of those surveyed admit they occasionally use their phone while they are on the road. One in 100, though, admits they break the law by doing so during during most journeys. The research suggests that while men are the most likely to make a call while driving, women are more likely to send or read a text. Commenting on the findings RAC spokesman Simon Williams says: "Thirteen years after the introduction of the current law forbidding use of a handheld phone at the wheel of a vehicle, this behaviour is far from being stamped out. In fact, the results of our research suggest the problem has got worse rather than better. "There seems to be an unfortunate perception that a quick look at a phone at the traffic lights is okay. "However, it is a significant distraction which at best may hold up other road users when a driver doesn't notice that the lights have changed, and at worst may increase the risk of a collision with a pedestrian, cyclist or another vehicle." Mr Williams adds that while government plans to introduce tougher penalties for the offence are to be welcomed, a high-profile advertising campaign is needed to raise people's awareness of the consequences that the habit can have. Using a handheld phone while driving, he adds, should be seen as being as socially unacceptable as drink-driving and speeding. Motorists caught using a handheld mobile behind the wheel currently face a fine of £100 and three penalty points on their licence.

Getting delayed in traffic while on the way home ended with a woman giving birth three weeks early - on the back seat of her car on a motorway hard shoulder. The woman went into labour after she and her husband - together with their two sons, aged four and two - got stuck in a five-mile traffic jam between junctions eight and nine on the M42 near Birmingham. Her husband made a 999 call to raise the alarm and request help. But by the time police arrived minutes later the baby, who has been named Tommy, had already been delivered. PC James Barry, of the Central Motorway Policing Group, says he and his colleague arrived at the scene to find the newborn wrapped in a blanket and being cradled by his mother on the back seat of their Vauxhall Zafira. PC Barry says despite their surprise, the woman’s two older sons were “happy as Larry” to have a baby brother. With the traffic jam - caused by a fuel spill - making it difficult for an ambulance to reach the scene, the officers drove the Zafira along the hard shoulder and on to the nearby National Motorcycle Museum where paramedics were waiting to help. PC Barry, who has only been with the motorway policing group for eight months, says although each day in the job is different this one was unforgettable. He has since received a photo of baby Tommy and says the family are “all doing well”.

Motorists are being warned to stop using five specific child car seats immediately following an urgent recall that has been prompted by safety concerns. It is feared the shells of the Mamas & Papas models that are being recalled by Argos could crack in the event of an accident. Parents are being advised to stop using the seats made exclusively for Argos - and to take them back to their local store for a full refund. A statement issued by Argos says a “potential safety concern” has been identified. That, the statement adds, means the seats’ shells may crack under impact and “therefore not provide the intended level of protection to the user”. The retailer is apologising for any inconvenience caused by the recall. The recall relates to Mamas & Papas’ Mercury Group 1 Black, Mercury Group 1 Grey, Mercury Group 1-2-3 Back, Mercury Group 1, 2, 3 Grey and Mercury Group 2-3 Black and Grey models. The relevant Argos catalogue numbers are 297/7526, 411/9100, 305/6037, 397/9530 and 245/4829 respectively.

The Doreways community group in Dore has been out in force organising and taking part in the first community litter pick of 2016. Many volunteers turned out to collect litter from a number of streets in the area. The group, supported by the Streets Ahead team who supplied litter pickers, collected more than 20 bags of litter after the pick. Margaret Laver from Doreways said: “We are passionate about keeping our community clean and work hard to do this. We had a great response to our first community litter pick this year and we are already organising an extra session on Sunday 5th June from 11am. “We will start at Dore Old School and blitz one area of our community. The ‘Summer Spruce Up’ and ‘Action for Autumn’ follow later. “We are so pleased that we always get the support of the Streets Ahead team and know that whenever we organise a community litter pick, we can call them and arrange for

the litter to be collected. This is a great help to us!” Steve Robinson, Head of Highway Maintenance at Sheffield City Council, said: “We work hard as a Council to keep the city clean and it is great to see that community groups such as the Doreways group are so passionate and active in keeping their communities clean. “If everyone plays their part in disposing of their litter in the correct way then we can all live in a Clean Sheffield.” Millie Guthrie, Streets Ahead’s Education and Community Liaison Officer, added: “The

Doreways community group is making a fantastic contribution to their local area and the wider city, bringing neighbours together in a common cause. “Despite Streets Ahead’s hard work on a daily basis to keep the city clean and litter free, we do know that unfortunately litter is still dropped on the streets. We all have a part to play in keeping our city clean and our Clean Sheffield anti-litter campaign aims to tackle this. We are always keen to work with committed groups across the city that are passionate about helping to keep the city

Scientific Fact: Exposure to far infrared rays are the key to preventing metastatic cancer and strengthening immunity.

Biomats are a perfect way to fight off disease. The Biomat heats and activates the body from the inside out. The same infrared rays you would receive from the sun are projected deep into your body. As your body temperature rises, the biomat induces a false fever that then stimulates your immune system. As a result, your body detoxifies and all of your bodily functions are effected in a positive way.

Warming your body in this way has also been proven to prevent Cancer.

CONSULTANTS TAKE ON PRETTY MUDDY FOR SEAN BEAN TO MANAGE BLADES LEGENDS CANCER CHARITY SUPPORTING THEIR WORK TEAM IN BRAMALL LANE CHARITY GAME A group of female consultants from Weston Park Hospital are taking on a Pretty Muddy challenge to raise funds for the hospitals dedicated cancer charity. On the 7th May, 5 oncologists and 3 of their colleagues from the regions only cancer hospital will pull on their workout gear and take on the 5k obstacle course at Rother Valley Country Park. In a bid to create some friendly rivalry between the staff at the hospital, the consultants are aiming to raise more money than their fellow registrars who are also taking on the race. With a target of £1000, the consultants are well on their way to achieving their goals ahead of the brave challenge in just a few weeks’ time. Clinical Director of Weston Park Hospital, Trish Fisher said, “Cancer touches the lives of nearly everyone in Sheffield and South Yorkshire. The medical teams and their support teams at Weston Park Hospital work tirelessly to improve the outcomes and experiences of patients receiving vital treatment for their cancer at the hospital.” “However, we recognise that we couldn’t provide the service we do without the support of a number of charities and in particular the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.” “So as well as some team building / healthy competition between the Registrars and the Consultants we wanted to recognise the valuable work of the cancer charity in supporting our hospital and staff.”

Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Throughout 2016 the charity will fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer. With various reasons for taking on Pretty Muddy, the group are confident that, with the support of colleagues, family and friends they will not only complete the challenge but also exceed their overall target. Gill Guest, Operations Director of the Cancer Management group said, “I want to help Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity to continue to offer financial support to the fantastic work of the Cancer Support Centre, which is located immediately behind Weston Park Hospital. The centre is ‘Here to help, here to listen’ for cancer patients and their families. One of my friends really appreciated their support so I am running for the ‘purple lady’ who loved running.”

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is proud to fund a number of projects within Weston Park Hospital including the recent refurbishment of the new Complex Therapy Unit, support to appoint Clinical Research Fellows and purchasing new equipment for the radiotherapy department to allow the implementation of new techniques to reduce the side effects of treatment. Cancer Charity Director, Samantha Kennedy said, “We want to wish all the consultants the best of luck for their incredibly brave challenge this May in support of the cancer charity’s work.” “It’s fantastic that staff are taking time out of their busy schedules to raise money so that we are able to continue supporting their imperative care of cancer patients across our region.” “The staff at the hospital provide exceptional treatment and care to patients - we hear that all the time from patients and supporters. Our role as a charity is to support these teams, complementing the services provided by the NHS to ensure we aren't simply treating the patient, but the needs of the person.” To support the consultant’s Pretty Muddy Challenge visit: www.justgiving.com/PatriciaFisher. Hollywood actor Sean Bean will be returning to the Bramall Lane dugout when he takes charge of a team of Sheffield United legends, as they take on a Fulham All Stars side including Jimmy Bullard and TV star Jack Whitehall in a charity football match at Bramall Lane. Lifelong Blades fan Bean, who took penalties in front of the Kop in 1996 during production of the British film When Saturday Comes, will take charge of a Sheffield United Legends team featuring several players from the Blades’ Premier League promotion-winning squad of the 2005/06 season. The charity game is expected to see former boxing world champion, Joe Calzaghe, line up alongside former Fulham players Bullard, Rufus Brevett, Sean Davis, Kit Symons, soap star Chris Fountain, Gogglebox celebrity George Gilbey and ‘The Wanted’ singer Tom Parker, also turning out for the Fulham All Stars. Former Blade and Fulham star Paul Peschisolido is planning on playing 45 minutes for each side. Notable former Blades players expected to take part will be former skipper Chris Morgan, Derek ‘Del’ Geary, Brian Deane,

Tony Agana, Craig Short, Michael Brown, Carl Asaba, Alan Quinn, Rob Kozluk, Alan Wright, Jon Harley, Bruce Dyer, Leigh Bromby, Richard Cresswell, Michael Tonge, Wayne Quinn, Jack Lester and another Blades former captain in David Holdsworth, with many more former players currently checking their schedules to see if they can play in the eagerly-anticipated game. Former World Cup Final referee, Howard Webb, will take charge of the game. Blades Legends Manager and Lord of the Rings star, Sean Bean, who starred as a United player in When Saturday Comes, said: “I may even reprise my role as Jimmy Muir! “Seriously, it will be wonderful to be managing such great United Legends, and for good causes. It’ll be great to be a part of what is sure to be a very special occasion. “I’ve supported Sheffield United for my whole life, and when I was offered the chance to don the Blades kit and manage from the Bramall Lane dugout, it was something I couldn’t turn down.” The game, sponsored by Redtooth and Maggie Mays Bar, will take place on Sunday 22 May at Bramall Lane, kick off at 1pm, with tickets now on sale from the

Bramall Lane box office, over the telephone 0114 2537 200 (option 1) or online on www.sufc.talentsport.co.uk The match is being held in aid of the Steelphalt Blades Academy, the Blades’ Former Players Association, and Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids charity, alongside the Fulham Foundation charity. Tickets are priced at only £7 for adults and £3 for concessions. A limited numbers of Players’ Lounge VIP tickets, with access to the Players’ Lounge to meet Sean Bean and some of the players and celebrities after the game, are available at £10 for adults and £5 for under-16s and these can also be purchased from the Box Office, or by calling 0114 253 7200 (Option 1). Dave McCarthy, Operations Director at Sheffield United, said: “This game is sure to be entertaining for the whole family. “It’ll be fantastic to welcome back some Blades heroes, including some from the 2005/06 season, when the Club was promoted to the Premier League, and of course Fulham’s Celebrity filled All Stars team. “We’re also grateful to Sean Bean for agreeing to manage the Blades team, and I’m sure it’s an experience which he, the players and the fans will not forget.”

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

If you remember a few weeks ago, I wrote about joining a new club, and finding a new water. A water I was expecting to struggle with, until finally I caught the biggest carp within, and one I was prepared to spend all year upon, whilst eschewing you, my readers, with tales of near misses, mystery, sightings of the said beast and more… well, on my second carp session, I’ve only gone and fluked it! The water in question is a park lake, crystal clear, with depths to over twenty feet within its five or so acres, and can be a tricky venue to catch from. On the day in question, the weather forecast was for a warm, sunny day, and, as I’d seen the odd fish move into the shallows previously, I thought I’d set up in that area. It was also near the car park too, and I’m getting on a bit now! The shallows are beginning to fill with lilies, a canopy of shade in a part of the lake until recently ‘Out of Bounds’, so a safe refuge for the carp. No longer; the club have opted to open the area up, so I set my ambush just outside this sanctuary, in the hope of intercepting a passing lump, whilst still giving myself a chance to land it without getting smashed up. My rigs are easy to tie; in truth, I’m not a complicated angler, most of my fishing is relatively simple, but a covering of silkweed meant that I had to think a little about presentation. I rate coated braids, especially with the last few inches stripped away to offer some flexibility, so chose to use one of the Vardis Tackle range; Summer Camou Downfall, a disruptive pattern, and very strong, which I hoped would do the job. The hook was a chod hook from the same company, and my Essential Cell pop up was anchored with a single split shot to sit about four inches off the bottom. I whittled a small amount of the boilie away until the split shot was enough to sink the rig. I nicked the hook through a tiny pva bag of old pop ups, knowing that the hook would be suspended above the weed after the lead had grounded, until the pva melted, before slowly depositing the hook gently on top of the weed. Perfect. First cast, and a handful of freebies were spread around the hook. This proved to be a mistake, as in the shallow water, they were easily seen by coots, which wasted no time in picking up the rig, and then dropping it in a tangled heap straight after… pesky things! This happened twice, before I realised that I needed to move the bait slightly further out,

so the pva bag was replaced, and the rig recast into deeper water. Everything set, I sat back to wait… Ten minutes later, a single bleep of the alarm caught my attention, so I poised over the rods, like a fat chap waiting for the chippy to open, and waited to see whether it would develop. It didn’t, so after a few seconds, I picked up my book and carried on reading… taking time to enjoy the sunshine, and watch the world go by… My phone rang, so I picked it up to answer it, and swiping madly, couldn’t stop it ringing. I was confused; my phone is set to ring ‘Battle of Britain’, but this was different, a persistently annoying buzzing, and it wasn’t until I glanced at my rod, to see the reel spinning, that I realised it was a bite! (It’s been a while!) My Sonik Tournos 10000 reels switch between freespool and clutched in around a quarter of a turn of the front drag, so as I picked up the rod, I was already clamping the spool to connect with whatever was on the other end. No need to strike, lifting the rod is sufficient, and I was soon attached to a fed up fish… which headed straight into thick weed! It was only stuck for a few seconds, steady pressure was enough to turn it into open water, and I clearly saw a black mass detach from the weed and plod into clearer waters. It looked big, but not unusually so, and I spent the next couple of minutes trying to keep the fish out of trouble, and gain line as it moved slowly

FISHING IN THE FENS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT We Welcome all Anglers to

towards me. As it closed, I still didn’t think it that big, let alone anything special, but as the folds of the net enveloped it, I could see that it was quite an impressive fish, dark of colour and wide of back, so I quickly unclipped the hooklink and let the fish rest for a few seconds before lifting it onto the waiting mat. It was bigger than I expected, possibly a thirty, so I beckoned a passing stranger and asked if he would be prepared to photograph it for me. As we both looked on, the net slipped back to reveal a good fish, which raised an expletive from the observer, and a sharp intake of breath from me! Safely in the weigh sling, the fish was weighed at 31lb 14oz, a fine fish indeed, and quickly photographed it was then slipped away into the depths. I knew ‘The Big One’ went 36lb at times, so thought nothing of it until I sent a quick picture to a friend who knows the fish well. Dean confirmed it was indeed my target fish, down in weight, but still looking healthy, and with that in mind (and decorating to crack on with) I packed up and loaded the van. As I left the lake, I was informed by one angler that he had been after that fish for years, without so much as seeing it, and I had got lucky. Yes, I had, I can’t argue, but after little more than ten hours, I’d landed the only target fish I wanted… lucky me!

IT WAS EMOTIONAL, SAYS WARNOCK Rotherham United boss Neil Warnock admitted it was an ‘emotional’ afternoon as his side signed off their fixtures at AESSEAL New York Stadium, despite falling to a 1-0 defeat against Blackburn Rovers. The Millers chief had his first taste of defeat on home soil and suffered a loss for the first time in 12 games as his side’s impressive run came to an end following Shane Duffy’s winner, but Warnock paid tribute to the fans in the wake of the game with Paul Lambert’s side. “It was quite emotional, I thought the fans were fantastic, and it was great for the players and their families to go around and take it all in,” he beamed.

“The fans are not daft; they know what we have achieved here, and how difficult it has been. There has been some great moments this season, and I am sure they will treasure them.” Warnock’s side slipped to a narrow defeat in front of the home fans and the Millers boss conceded that his team weren’t at their best. “We were sloppy today. It was a great opportunity to keep the run going. I don’t like losing at any time,” he explained. “The goal was a sloppy one, it was the first time we have conceded from a set piece in the time I have been here.” Former Rovers striker Leon Best spurned the Millers best chance of a leveller but

Warnock was quick to add that he was pleased with his side’s application despite the defeat in what he described as a ‘good game’ on Saturday afternoon. “I don’t think Leon knows how he missed that, somebody did jump in front of him, and for a split second he lost it. There is no other excuse, it was a great cross. “We had one or two other chances, but it was difficult because we was doing twice as much work, as we was losing. We had to work twice as hard, but I can’t fault the lads.” “It was still a good game, there was lots of goalmouth action, but I know they tried hard and I will not fault that.” “I thought we were sluggish in midfield today, but you can

put that down to how hard they have worked since I have been here.” Warnock finished by looking forward to the challenge of a trip to Hull City that awaits his side next Saturday but is confident that his team are a match for anyone in the Sky Bet Championship. “I am glad we are playing Hull next week, a team chasing promotion, and I want to put in a good performance for the away fans – I know there is a good contingent going up. “You wouldn’t write us off against anyone in this league now, and that is a sign of how far we have come, people know they are in for a tough game against us.”

CAMP SCOOPS DOUBLE AWARD Rotherham United goalkeeper Lee Camp has scooped the 2015/16 Player of the Year award at a gala awards night at the AESSEAL New York Stadium on Saturday night. The former Nottingham Forest and Derby County stopper beat off strong competition from the likes of Lee Frecklington and Kirk Broadfoot to land the coveted prize, at the awards ceremony sponsored by Purpose Media. The 31-year-old has made 41 appearances for the Millers in all competitions so far this

season, and has played a major role in the club’s recent revival following the appointment of Neil Warnock. Camp recently described the Millers’ run to Championship safety as the biggest achievement of the career, as he excelled in a number of crucial games throughout the season. It was a double celebration for the Northern Ireland international as he also picked up the Players’ Player award for the 2015/16 campaign. The award, which is voted for by the players of Rotherham

United, saw Camp win with Broadfoot coming second and Frecklington and Joe Mattock sharing third spot. Tottenham Hotspur loanee Grant Ward has been awarded with the Rotherham United Young Player of the Year Award sponsored by Complete Utilities Solutions. The 21-year-old, who signed for the Millers in pre-season, has been a virtual ever-present and has endeared himself to the AESSEAL New York Stadium faithful during his stint in South Yorkshire with his tireless running and exciting forward

play. The dynamic midfielder has featured both centrally and on the right for the Millers and has caught the eye with a number of impressive strikes including his televised goal from distance against Burnley earlier in the season. His performances in recent weeks have impressed first team manager Neil Warnock and have been pivotal in the Millers turnaround which has seen them secure their place in the Sky Bet Championship for next season.

CREWE LOSS LEAVES ROVERS IN DESPERATE POSITION Following the injury to Gary McSheffrey, Nathan Tyson came back into the starting lineup while young Joe Pugh earned a place on the bench following a string of successful performances in the Development side. Crewe had a great chance on the break following a long clearance. Callum Saunders got on the end of it and beat Mitchell Lund for pace as he broke into the box but he dragged his shot wide of the post. Rowe almost put Rovers ahead after lovely interplay with Williams. The Wolves loanee broke through but strong defending from Davis took him away from goal before he was able to get his shot off. It was however Tommy Rowe who broke the deadlock on 28 minutes for Rovers with his third goal in three games. Picking up the ball, he again drove at goal before hitting a great strike past

Ben Garratt to put Rovers ahead. Rowe was in the thick of the action again as he set up Coppinger with a free header in the area but it was straight at Garratt. Williams then fired over after finding space to shoot on the edge of the area. As Rovers looked to go in at the break a goal to the good, a lapse in concentration at the back gifted a goal to the home side. After a nothing ball was played into the box, Cedric Evina failed to clear it and was robbed by Callum Ainley who poked the ball home from 6 yards giving Matthews no chance. Aaron Taylor-Sinclair was introduced in the second half as Mitchell Lund made way. It was a dramatic start to the half as Rovers had a goal disallowed. Nathan Tyson turned in an Andy Williams ball across the box but the linesman had his flag up. Rowe was then bundled over in the box after breaking through but no penalty was given.

It was end to end stuff as Matthews was called upon to make a brave save down the other end following a scramble in the box. Minutes later Crewe took the lead. There was another mix up in the Rovers box and as they failed to clear the ball Marcus Haber smashed the ball in at the back post. Andy Williams went close again as fantastic footwork from him saw him shoot with his left foot on the turn, but his effort just bent past the right post. Rovers pushed and pushed, Darren Ferguson bought on Liam Mandeville and Cameron Stewart in the hope of finding an equaliser. Cameron Stewart delivered a number of good balls into the box and Williams went agonisingly close when his header at the back post went just over the bar. Stewart delivered another wicked ball across the box with minutes to play, all it needed

was a touch but Williams was inches away from equalising! In the dying minutes it was heartbreak for Rovers as substitute Bradden Inman picked up the ball and tried his luck from range, firing low at goal his shot brilliantly found the bottom corner. Despite playing three minutes of stoppage time there was no way back for Rovers and it finished 3-1. Crewe: Garratt, Turton, Davis (c), Guthrie, Bakayogo, Fox, Jones, Bingham, Ainley (Udoh 80’), Haber (Ray 83’), Saunders (Inman 71’) Rovers: Matthews, Alcock, Butler, Evina, Lund (TaylorSinclair 45’), McCullough, Rowe, Calder (Stewart 70’), Coppinger ©, Williams, Tyson (Mandeville 70’) Unused Subs: Stuckmann, McKenzie, Middleton, Pugh

United’s play-off qualification hopes ended at Coventry City United’s play-off qualification hopes ended at Coventry City on Saturday, following a 3-1 defeat. Afterwards, Nigel Adkins faced the media to offer his thoughts. He said: “We started poorly and a deflected goal in the first couple of minutes gave them the advantage and then we were two down. “After that we responded well, showed a little creativity but it didn’t seem like it was going to happen. We continued to knock on the door, particularly after Billy’s penalty, but we were then hit by a sucker punch.

“We needed a victory but didn’t get what we came for, we didn’t create pressure into chances, there were plenty of ‘oohs and ‘aahs’ bit we didn’t get the fortune we needed.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 OWLS HIGH ON CONFIDENCE, OWLS PLAY-OFF DATES CONFIRMED SAYS GOAL HERO HOOPER Gary Hooper produced one of his best performances for Wednesday in perhaps the most crucial fixture of the campaign so far on Saturday. In a game where the Owls needed to avoid defeat against Cardiff to secure a play-off spot, Hooper was a thorn in the side of the Bluebirds from start to finish. Having come within a whisker of breaking the deadlock in the first half when his low strike crashed against the post, Hooper had a hand in all three goals after the break – scoring two and he said: “I thought from start to finish we were on top and played really well. “We were due one of those performances, we got a good point at Derby and kicked on and deserved the three points. “To score two goals was nice, we always create chances and they just need putting away. Now we face Wolves and then we’re into the play-offs.” With opponents and schedules still to be decided in the end of season play-offs, Hooper says the Owls will head into them with

no fear, and explained: “Everyone will look at us after that performances and if we play our game, then on our day we can defeat anyone. “We create chances, we keep clean sheets and

we can give anyone a game. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time here, it’s nice playing football again, training is good and it shows on the pitch.”

Following the penultimate round of fixtures in the Sky Bet Championship, the Owls are now guaranteed to finish in sixth position. Wednesday defeated Cardiff 3-0 on Saturday to secure a place in the play-offs but Derby’s 1-1 draw at Brighton on Sunday means the Owls will finish in sixth. As a result, Carlos Carvalhal’s side will play the first leg of their play-off semi final at Hillsborough on Friday

13 May, with the second leg away from home on Monday 16 May. Wednesday will face either Middlesbrough or Brighton in the semi finals. Boro host the Seagulls on the final day of the campaign which

will decide who takes the final automatic promotion position and the side that will face the Owls in the play-offs. Wednesday head to Wolves on the final day of the season next weekend.

Carlos Carvalhal set over 30,000 Wednesdayites a challenge on Friday – and the head coach says they gave ‘the perfect answer’ 24 hours later. Ahead of the crunch clash with Cardiff, Carvalhal said that, even when mistakes are made, even when a pass goes astray, the fans must give even more and help the players over the line and into the play-offs. And speaking to the assembled media at Hillsborough after his side swept away the Bluebirds 3-0, Carvalhal could hardly disguise his delight: “I gave our massive fans a challenge. They gave the perfect answer. Absolutely perfect.“Of course, there were moments when passes did not reach and when moves broke down. “But our fans just made more and more noise and it was incredible to hear. This was so important to the players. “Hillsborough is a

fantastic place for football and I am very, very pleased that all

those supporters went home with big smiles on their faces.”
