ALBERT SNODGRASS
I accidentally swallowed some Scrabble tiles. My next toilet visit could spell disaster. A little five year old girl was usually driven to school in the mornings by her Grandad, but one day he had a bad cold so her Grandmother took her. That night the little girl told her parents that the ride to school with Granny was very different. What made it different? asked her parents. Well, she replied, Gran and I didn’t see a single idiot, blind sod or moron on the whole journey. Boss: so..you lied about reading the report! Me: yeah it’s kind of a catch 22 thing Boss: how so? Me: I lied about reading that too. I’m going to have to throw out this shirt or sew it seams. Two weasels are sitting on a bar stool. One starts to insult the other one. He screams, “I slept with your mother!” The bar gets quiet as everyone listens to see what the other weasel will do. The first again yells, “I SLEPT WITH YOUR MOTHER!” The other says, “Go home dad you’re drunk.” ‘Knock Knock’,’Who’s there?’, ‘Impatient cow’, ‘Impat..’. ‘MOO’!

With only 3 weeks to go Mosborough Music Festival is on course to be bigger than ever with under 200 tickets left for its 6th year, with the 2016 festival taking place on June 3rd and 4th with an extended capacity. The 2015 festival sold out with weeks to go but you can still grab one of the few remaining tickets for this year at www.mosboroughmusicfestival.co.uk. This charity based festival has gone from strength to strength with Whitehornes estate agents and C&G assessments have once again sponsored the festival. A top drawer line-up performing on three stages includes, Reverend & the Makers, Space, The Southmartins, Complete Madness, Jungle Lion, Redfaces, Bang Bang Romeo, Marquis Drive, Dirty Sterling, The SSS, Stop Drop Robot, The Shanklins, Phat Bollard, Tom Hingley, Bongo & the Soul Jar, Maybelleen, The Jackobins, Reasons to be Cheerful and Malarkey Affair. “We will be quite sad in a way that this year’s festival is probably the last on the Mosborough site due to development of the land. There’s been so many great memories, it won’t be the end of Mosborough as a festival though as despite the development we will continue in the hope that our crowd understand the fact that we have to move and follow us to a new site. Last year sold out and we could have sold another thousand tickets such was the demand. It’s a win - win situation for our festival goers as we are cheap, high quality, family orientated and also look after charities along the way. We raised just under £5000 for charities last year and are hoping to do at least the same for this year’s charity which is ‘Help for Heroes’ plus another in which we are yet to decide, Organiser Steve Cowens said. The festival has added onsite camping and a Friday evening show to the festival. Under 10’s are free, with under 11 to 15 year olds £5. Steve added, “We try not to be any old festival, our catch phrase is ‘we are the people’s festival with a heart’. We try to be different and really look after our crowd, we even had a marriage proposal on stage last year, thankfully she said ‘yes’. This year we’ve got another outstanding line up which includes our own

TOURING CIRCUS DELIGHTS AT SHEFFIELD SHOW Last week hundreds of disadvantaged children from across South Yorkshire were treated to a magical show of acrobatics and circus shenanigans, as Circus Starr brought its annual tour to Meadowhall Shopping Centre. On the night, Meadowhall’s overflow car park was transformed into a theatrical showground with the arrival of the ‘Big Top’ – Circus Starr’s distinctive 500 seater tent. The enormous marquee was full to capacity at each of the two performances. The not-for-profit organisation sets about each year to conduct a national tour, providing a oneof-a-kind show to children with special needs and from lowincome families. Taking place
over 28 venues in the UK, the free show is a much anticipated treat for families who may find themselves excluded from the arts, due to a lack of accessibility or affordability. Hundreds of tickets were donated to charities across South Yorkshire, inviting these families to come down to Meadowhall to enjoy the welcoming and accepting atmosphere that Circus Starr strive to provide. As Circus Starr’s Director, Neville Wilson, explains: “Children dancing in the aisles or shouting out is all part of the experience. It is important that carers relax and enjoy this shared family time and don’t feel judged.” Parents were quick to sing their praises for the event. As one
mother said, “It was an absolutely brilliant show. My son was happy with the high fives he got from you! Thank you for all the hard work you do – many smiles on children’s faces today!” Among the groups to benefit from tickets were: Homestart Sheffield, Sheffield Autism Support, Norfolk Park Special School, Aspergers Children & Carers Together, Neurocare, Royal Mencap, Talbot School, The Rowan School, Cash for Kids, Abbey School, Newman School, Hilltop Special School and Kelford School. Circus Starr was founded in 1987 and now provides over £1.3 million worth of tickets to children, their families and community groups each year.

ARE YOU UP FOR A ‘HEROES BREAKFAST’? Help for Heroes (H4H) are asking the nation to start the day in the best possible way; with a good deed! Their latest fundraising initiative is a great way to fundraise with friends and family or with work colleagues. Everyone says that breakfast is the most important part of the day, and in this case, it is! Whether you go for a healthy option, a good fry up or try something new, a ‘Heroes Breakfast’ is one of the easiest way to raise funds for our heroes. A free fundraising pack is available to everyone who registers and includes collection boxes, a sweepstake game, balloons and Heroes Breakfast banner. The ‘Heroes Breakfast’ campaign is from 13 – 26 June 2016, however if this isn’t convenient please feel free to choose a date that is. To register or for more information visit www.heroesbreakfast.org.uk or call 01980 846459.
Emma Parry, CEO & co-founder, Help for Heroes: “H4H is all about ‘doing your bit’ and this event is a wonderful example of people rallying support and having a great deal of fun while they raise money. The money you raise is needed, it is being used and it is hugely appreciated.” H4H offers comprehensive support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses in the line of duty. This is provided through grants to individuals, other charities and organisations, capital build projects and four Recovery Centres across the UK which offer support for life. The money raised by the hugely generous public has been used to support the wounded, but there is still so much more to do. Soldiers, sailors and airmen who are injured today will still need our support tomorrow and in the days that follow, for the rest of their lives. They are still battling and H4H will not let them battle alone.

HOW SHARP ARE YOU ON TWO WHEELS? Motorcyclists in South Yorkshire looking to sharpen their riding skills before the summer are reminded they can get quality guidance thanks to a subsidised local training course. Sunday, May 15, sees the first of three ‘SharpRider’ courses being held across the county at Rotherham’s Lifewise Centre – the home of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership, which also subsidises every local biker who takes the course. For an incredible fee of just £20, post-test motorcyclists who live in South Yorkshire, can brush up on their riding skills ready for the new season. Presented by Mike Abbott from the British SuperBike School, ‘SharpRider’ is a nationally recognised enhanced two-day rider course that normally costs £100 but thanks to the Partnership, is only £20. The course is based on the Driving Standards Agency Enhanced Rider Scheme and comprises theory and actual on-the-road training. The scheme is suitable for a range of motorcyclists, from those who have just passed their full test to the more experienced wanting to improve or refresh their skills. It is also suitable for those returning to riding after having had a break from the saddle as well as those who are upgrading to more powerful machines. It allows bikers to check their individual riding standard as well as reducing their insurance costs. Riders who successfully complete the course receive a DSA Riding Assessment and a Certificate. The three theory courses will all take place on Sundays - on May 15, at the Lifewise Centre, Rotherham, S66 8LB; on June 26 at the Dearne Fire Station, Manvers Way, S63 5DD, and on July 17, at the Parkway Fire Station, Sheffield, S9 4EP. These will be followed by the individual on-the-road sessions, which are held at a date and time to suit the individual rider. For further information about the three sessions please ring 01777 818013. Joanne Wehrle, Safer Roads Education Manager for the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership, said ‘SharpRider’ is a scheme not to be missed by South Yorkshire’s motorcyclists. She added: “Unfortunately, motorcyclists are very vulnerable and although the number of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured has dropped in recent years they still account for 19 per cent of all road user deaths. “This is why we would encourage any motorcyclist, no matter how experienced they are to enrol for this training course, which is

being offered at a bargain price. The £20 fee is a small price to pay for the kind of quality training that could save lives.” ‘SharpRider’ is one of many courses run by the Safer Roads Partnership for the riders of powered two wheeled machines. Others include TWANG or ‘Twist And Go’ - a free course aimed at riders of under 125cc machines, and ‘Biker Down’ - a free two-hour session aimed at providing all motorbike and scooter riders who live in the county with basic first-aid skills and awareness of ‘road traffic collision’ management. Anyone who rides a powered two-wheeler from the smallest to the largest can get the training they need by contacting the Partnership at www.lifewise999.co.uk/roadsafety or email saferroads@southyorks.pnn. police.uk
SMART MOTORWAY EDUCATION 'CLEARLY NEEDED' A decision by MPs to review the distances between emergency rescue areas (ERAs) on all-lane running smart motorways has been welcomed by the RAC. And the motoring organisation is urging members of the Commons’ Transport Committee to help ensure that motorways remain the country’s safest roads. The committee has been looking at how all-lane running schemes on sections of the M1, M4, M5, M6 and M42 and M62 have been working. They involve either the permanent conversion of hard-shoulders into extra lanes or their partial use as part of managed schemes. The committee has decided to review the distances between ERAs and push ahead with a public information drive to educate motorists about how to drive on smart motorways. The RAC says having consistently raised concerns about the “lengthy spacing” between ERAs on all-lane running stretches of motorway, it is “extremely good news for motorists’ safety” that the issue is to be reviewed. It says its survey of drivers who have broken down on all-lane running stretches of the M25 suggests that only 42% knew that ERAs existed. Little over a quarter (28%) of those questioned, it adds, could actually see one from where they had broken down.

Used to treat and prevent many different ailments, using a Biomat means healthier living. Biomats will improve anyone's energy, health and immune system. Biomats are great for patients with Cancer, Lyme disease, MS, Diabetes, Stress, Arthritis and all other ailments.
ScientiďŹ c Fact: Exposure to far infrared rays are the key to preventing metastatic cancer and strengthening immunity.
Biomats are a perfect way to fight off disease. The Biomat heats and activates the body from the inside out. The same infrared rays you would receive from the sun are projected deep into your body. As your body temperature rises, the biomat induces a false fever that then stimulates your immune system. As a result, your body detoxifies and all of your bodily functions are effected in a positive way.

Warming your body in this way has also been proven to prevent Cancer.
Infrared Rays raise body temperature, warming the blood and expanding the blood vessels. There is an increase in peripheral blood flow and volume, resulting in improved circulation & heart function.

ENJOY QUALITY & VARIETY AT Doncaster’s
Award Winning Markets
If a spot of retail therapy is what you need then Doncaster Markets are hard to beat! Winner of the BBC Food and Farming Awards – Best Food Market 2015, Doncaster is the biggest and best traditional market in the North. With some 400 shops, stalls and stands, Doncaster Markets attract visitors from across the country. As you enter the Market Place from Baxtergate the hustle and bustle of the market immediately hit the senses as traders announce their prices and offers to passers-by. The outside fruit and veg stalls sit next to the Fish Market, where cockles, prawns, different types of crabs, lobster and razor clams all vie for your attention! If you venture deeper into the historic market buildings you enter the Market Hall (also called the International Food Hall) which is the oldest building in the market complex and dates from 1847. Here you will find award-winning butchers, local pies and cheese specialists. The Market Hall joins onto yet another historic building, the Corn Exchange, another listed building and dating from 1875. If you blink, you might miss the entrance from within the Market Hall, but ask one of the friendly stall holders who will be glad to help. When you do find the way in, it’s an absolute gem once inside, opening up into a wide open space with ornate cast iron decorations and a huge barrel-vaulted ceiling overhead. The Corn Exchange was built with more than just market trading in mind – it was also a Concert Hall. Over the years many famous people have appeared there, including a young Winston Churchill telling audiences about his experiences during the Boer War; even Sir Edward Elgar has performed here, conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in 1909. Nowadays, there are craft stalls, artwork and other household goods for sale. Pass through the Corn Exchange and exit at the far entrance and you enter the lower end of the Market Place. This area was transformed in 2014 with new paving, completely new outside stalls and a revised layout, which opens up the view to the Corn Exchange façade. Next to theses stalls is the Wool Market, yet another listed Victorian structure, with tall cast iron columns enclosing a collection of stalls, selling everything from books and CDs to greeting cards and collectables. The stalls in the Outer Market and the Irish Middle Market also sell a wide variety of things, including carpets, military clothing and furniture. This year’s Love Your Local Market Week is a fantastic time to visit. There is a busy schedule of events including the inaugural Doncaster Food & Folk Festival on Saturday 21 May. On Friday 27 May there is a family fun day as well as the launch of an exhibition in the Corn Exchange about Doncaster’s First World War history. The market is fully open Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On Wednesdays the outdoor market area hosts an impressive antique and bric-a-brac market. Some traders, including fishmongers and fruit sellers, also open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Farmers’ markets take place in the Market Square on the first and second Saturday each month. The address for visiting the market is Market Place, Doncaster, DN1 1NF. For more information visit www.doncaster.gov. uk/markets

Curve Media are teaming up with not-forprofit Sheffield Money to make a new TV series for the BBC exploring how local residents may be facing unexpected hardship, and need a small loan to make a massive difference in their lives. Every day, all over Sheffield, thousands of people find themselves in desperate need of just a few hundred pounds to get back on their feet, but the high street banks have turned their back on them. 36% of people are just one surprise heating bill or washing machine breakdown away from hardship[1]. Many of these people are forced to turn to high cost credit providers such as pay-day loan companies – or even loan sharks – to tide them over, inevitably sinking them further into debt. Sheffield Council are trying to combat this with ‘Sheffield Money’, a not-for-profit loan service that aims to match

CAN YOU HELP DELIVER THE UK’S PREMIER THE BALL, ACADEMY FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT? CROOKES, Over 800 players from some of the biggest football clubs on the planet take part in Sheffield’s second Youdan Trophy this summer and scores of volunteers are now being sought to ensure the event’s smooth running. Teams from Rosenborg to Everton, Seattle Sounders to FC Basel and Newcastle United to Royal Antwerp are lined up to join top-flight clubs from Africa and Europe for the tournament which includes the city’s own Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. The Youdan Trophy has quadrupled in size from its debut in 2015 and volunteers are being sought to cover team liaison roles, ball boy supervisor positions, general event roles and receptionists. James Hope-Gill, Youdan Trophy tournament director, said: “The team line-up for the 2016 tournament is exceeding all expectations – we’re now recruiting the 100 volunteers that will help deliver a tournament that we’re growing to become the biggest and most prestigious of its kind in the whole of Europe. “Volunteering will provide a fantastic experience at the very

Simon Pugh, South Yorkshire Sport Development Manager, said: “The volunteer team at the Youdan Trophy will provide support in a number of essential roles and we are seeking volunteers with a broad range of skills and experiences to make the make the event a success, whilst also giving the rewarding experience which being part of a volunteer team offers.” Sheffield-based You-Are-TheRef.com, which is the world's leading independent authority and education platform for match officials, are behind the creation of the competition which celebrates football’s first ever tournament; the Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. which was played only once in 1867 at Bramall Lane. The Youdan Trophy is set to take place in Sheffield from August 1st-5th. Group games will

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
A strange week this week, I’ve had a few fish, but I’ve also realised that you can never keep an angler happy! My first trip of the week was to a club water. It’s a lovely water, has some fine rewards, but isn’t particularly easy to fish, and it’s a challenge I enjoy. Not so other anglers, especially matchmen, who have complained to the committee that there aren’t enough fish in for the match lads to catch (despite 200lb being possible if they are feeding) so could they stock some fast growing carp? The water already holds good carp to over 25lb, which regularly smash up match tackle, so they wanted something more manageable. As a result, three hundred carp in the 2-3lb bracket were introduced, and now anglers are moaning that they can’t catch anything else! I had a couple myself, fine fish indeed, but not what I was after… never happy! I then chose to have a walk around a lovely little lake, one which is tucked away, relatively untouched, and exquisitely peaceful. A light lure rod, a handful of Rapture UK lures, and I was happily to wander the banks, dropping the lures into likely spots. I had an hour or two to walk the banks, and after working the lures below lilies, I managed to bank a couple of chubby jacks, which gave a good account of themselves on light kit, and, more importantly, were good fun. I also happened upon a grass snake, watched water vole, and listened to the screech of the resident oystercatchers; blissful, so who moaned this time? As I finished my session, I was accosted by another angler who enquired whether I had caught. I told him I had, and he asked, without any shame, whether I’d ‘knocked them on the head?’ WHAT? He enjoyed his silverfish angling you see, and those nasty pike were taking fish from ‘his’ water and therefore deserved to die… I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, in this day and age, when anglers are supposed to be educated, and appreciate the place that the pike holds within a delicate ecosystem, I was appalled and told him so… never happy! Finally, this week, I’ve been on a day ticket water, and chose to fish on a Friday, when many other anglers have their only chance to fish. I set up three rods in a quiet corner, and sat back to catch bream (I was after carp, but there you go!) whilst watching other anglers go about their fishing. Within the hour, I’d witnessed the trusty mallet, thudding its presence through the water, as a tracksuit wearing, deckchair carrying, beer drinking angler whacked them into the soft grass before shouting to his mate that the tent was up. I watched, dumbfounded, as an angler on the far bank, walloped a 2oz lead to within inches of my feet, oblivious to the fact that I was cunningly camouflaged within the reeds, and then launch a spod in my direction until I stood and asked him if he wanted me to move, or whether he would mind if I continued to fish my spots? Bless him… Further up the lake, two other anglers, fishing five rods between them, alternated casting each rod every five minutes until almost every fish in the lake had passed me as they made their way to the other end, away from the deluge of lead crashing on their heads! Not content with trying to hit the lake, they also managed a new personal best willow tree, and uprooted numerous reeds from the margins as they sought to make space for their pods… I lasted another hour, then decided it was time to go; I think if it wasn’t for other anglers, most of the time, I would be happy… well, just maybe…

As we enter May the County Senior League is beginning to draw its season to the close. All silverware apart from the Division One and U21 Division title have already been decided prior to this week. However, a bumper fixture list for the U21 sides this week brought the U21 competition to its conclusion on the weekend. Premier Division It has been a big week at the bottom of the Premier Division, as third bottom Millmoor Juniors played both of the bottom two at home. On Wednesday, Millmoor hosted second bottom Wickersley FC. The two teams couldn’t be separated in an end-to-end game which finished 3-3. The result helped neither team. However, Millmoor’s week would get better though, as they beat bottom-of-the-league Thorpe Hesley 3-0 at home, with goals from Chris Howard, Martin Jones and Scott Hartley. Hartley goal added to the brace he scored midweek. Second placed and defending champions Swinton Athletic ended their season with a 1-1 draw at home to AFC Penistone Church. The point takes Penistone back into fourth place. They end the season in imperious form with only one defeat in their last 17 league games. Goals from Josh McKeegan, Luke Marsden and Jack Bedford gave North Gawber Colliery a comfortable 3-0 home win over Oughtibridge WMFC on Wednesday night. Division One Wombwell Main’s completed their charge to the summit of Division One on Friday night, with a 5-2 win over Byron House at the SWD Ground. Wombwell have won all of their last four games. Wombwell have two games left; home to third placed Denaby Main and away to fourth placed Caribbean Sports. The aforementioned Denaby beat Kingstone United 2-0 on Saturday, with goals from Liam Winfield and Tommy Needham. Division Two Grimethorpe Sports confirmed second spot in Division Two, with a 4-0 win over New Bohemians at Grimethorpe Sports Ground. Lee Hulme starred for Grimethorpe scoring twice. It has been a remarkable season for Grimethorpe, as they finished runner’s up in both the League Cup and the S&HCFA Association Cup. New Bohemians also played on Monday night, when they beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves 3-1 at Athelstan Primary School. Bottom side Sheffield Lane Top hosted second bottom Bawtry Town at the Civil Service Ground on Wednesday night. The Lane Top ran out 3-1, claiming their first win of the season.

DISAPPOINTED WITH DEFEAT Rotherham United manager Neil Warnock admitted he was disappointed in the manner of his side’s final day 5-1 defeat at Hull City, but commended his players for their efforts which ensured that the club will be playing Sky Bet Championship football next season. The Millers boss conceded that his team had a bad day at the office as they fell to goals from Jake Livermore (2), Abel Hernandez, Mo Diame and Robert Snodgrass at the KC Stadium, with Lee Frecklington registering for the visitors. “Listen, I can only praise the lads, although we were very poor today. We felt comfortable early doors and we scored the goal but we just lost our shape,”
Warnock explained. “Overall, I have to praise the players but it’s disappointing to finish on a low like that. “When you have got five and six lads losing their shape you haven’t got a cat in hell’s chance when you’re playing against a team like Hull. “If you lose your shape and your concentration then you’re going to get turned over when you’re playing against a good side.” After a flurry of chances in the first half the Millers looked much more resilient following the restart and Warnock admitted that he had to fire his side up during the half time exchanges. “I just gave them a rollocking, that’s all. You can’t do any
more can you? I said go out and play for pride,” he admitted. “Whether we have nothing at stake is irrelevant, I don’t want to get beat enormously. They are a good side and if we had let them play their own way in the second half it would have been double figures.” The Millers chief was dealt a blow earlier in the week when he learned that he would be without Matt Derbyshire for the clash at the KC Stadium and was also forced into dropping Leon Best to the bench as a result of injury. “We lost Derbyshire and Besty wasn’t right this week so we couldn’t start him. We haven’t got a squad big enough to cope with that really and it showed today,” Warnock said.
“We need everyone to be spot on and in the run we have had everyone has been spot on. Some of them have probably got an excuse because it’s the end of the season and I suppose when I came if you’d said we need to go to Hull to get a result to stay up I would have taken it.”
GAFFER POST-BURTON Gaffer hands it to exemplary Brewers and says Rovers must take inspiration. Darren Ferguson bemoaned his sides luck as they held Burton Albion to a 0-0 draw on the final day of the season; a result which was enough to see the visitors promoted. Having used all three substitutions, the Scot watched on as Aaron Taylor-Sinclair and Riccardo Calder both hobbled off with injuries which significantly hampered the hosts chances of finishing the season with a flourish. “The two injuries put us down to eight outfield players and that was the game killed really, we couldn’t do much after that,” said Ferguson. “I think a lot typified the season in terms of the quality in the
final third of the pitch. “I don’t think we had a shot at goal in the first half, and we didn’t move the ball quick enough. I don’t know if there were nerves. “I’m glad we didn’t lose the game; I thought we would have gone on and won it if the injuries hadn’t occurred.” After a nervy encounter that lacked tangible quality – in stark contrast to December’s six-goal thriller – the Scot was one of the first to congratulate the Brewers on their first ever promotion to the second tier. “Congratulations to Burton, they fully deserve it, and it’s an outstanding achievement,” he said. “They were very nervous because they were obviously aware of the Walsall score.
Everyone at Doncaster Rovers is deeply disappointed that this wonderful club has been relegated to the fourth tier of league football. We are conscious that this was far from our plans when we started this campaign in August and we now must immediately look to plan ahead with our goal to re-establish this club in League One with the ultimate aim of challenging for promotion to the Championship. Your support this season both home and away has been inspirational and has helped us win points throughout the campaign. Please don’t forget that. We thank you and please
do trust us that we are all hurting with you at this tough time. You, our supporters are integral to the success of this club and working together as we have done so well this year we want you to help us back to League One at the first attempt. We will communicate again very soon and will be explicit as regards to our aspirations for next season and how we believe these aspirations will be achieved. As always thank you for your brilliant support and for showing us that you truly are “Rovers Til I Die”.
Our fans were good again and we wanted to go out and show our appreciation but due to the Burton fans we weren’t able to do that. “I think Burton are a great example of if you come out of that league (League 2), you can go again and I did that at Peterborough.” The talemate was just the third goalless draw that Rovers had been involved in all season and, having consigned the club to the fourth tier for the first time in twelve years, indicated the start of a busy summer for Ferguson. “We’ve ended up fourth bottom after 46 games, there are no excuses, and it’s a big, big job to do in the summer now in terms of players I want in now obviously. We’ve already started and we’ve got a busy few weeks
37
ahead,” he said. “There’s lots to work on and I’ve got players in that dressing room that I definitely want to work with – there’s no question about that – and some partnerships that I’m seeing are working really well together so we’ll build on that and the ones we want to keep. “We’ll try and recruit the right ones if we can; Tommy Rowe, can I persuade him to stay? Gary McSheffrey, we’ve clearly missed him in the last two games and obviously others as well. “It’ll be busy in terms of I’m hoping players go out and I’m hoping to recruit the right players coming in – those with good character and those who can handle the expectation of us probably being favourites in League 2.”

THE GREATEST PLAYER NEVER TO PLAY FOR ENGLAND? To get our readers well and truly in the mood for the forthcoming European Championships in June, John Webster commences a ten part special exploring the best players who probably should, but actually never did, represent their country. At the end of the series we
will put it to you, The Mercury reader, to give a definitive vote on the subject and decide who was the best player never to play for England. All voters will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win an England goody bag to enhance their viewing experience this summer.
NO. 9 NATHAN DYER
Premier League in Rodgers’ first season in charge. He assisted two goals in the play-off final and was voted the Supporters’ Player of the Year. Swansea performed above expectations in the top flight and Dyer flourished; turning some of the league’s best defenders inside-out with his electric pace and trickery. He could also find the back of the net and scored two goals at Wembley to help the Swans win the League Cup in 2013. Dyer was outperforming most English wingers at the time but was over-looked by England manager Roy Hodgson. Big name players at bigger clubs, who were playing less first-team football, were selected above him. Dyer’s better days now seem behind him as he regularly warms the bench for Leicester City. It’s hard to deny though, that for a brief period, Dyer was one of the most dangerous wingers in the Premier League.
Some footballers play at the top of their abilities for most of their career; players like Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes. Other players might only shine for a short period. But it’s when these players shine, that their talents need to be utilised by the national team’s manager. Jamie Vardy is a perfect example of this. Vardy is indeed an exceptional case but there are other players whose form and talent has shone through, only for the England manager look the other way. Nathan Dyer is the prime specimen. Dyer came through the youth academy at Southampton where he spent five years with the Saints before joining Swansea City in 2009. The following season saw Brendan Rodgers become the new manager and it was under his management that Dyer’s career really began to take off. The jet-heeled winger was instrumental in firing the Swans up to the

BLADES NEWS2015/16 SHARP AWARDED PLAYER OF THE YEAR SUMMER OF CHANGE Over 250 guests attended the End of Season Awards Dinner at Bramall Lane on Sunday evening which was presented by Harry Gration MBE and was headline sponsored by SteelPhalt. Billy Sharp was crowned the SteelPhalt Player
of The Year for the 2015/16 season. The 30-year-old, who signed for the Blades in July 2015, has been a virtual ever-present this season and has endeared himself to the Bramall Lane faithful during his third stint in Sheffield. The forward has contributed this season with a
number of impressive strikes, taking his goal tally to 21 for the 15/16 campaign. Sharp also scooped two further awards including Goal of the Season and Players Player of the Year. He was also presented with the PFA Community Champion Award for his contribution to Community and Charitable activities. The winners in full were: George Long Sheffield United Community Foundation Ambassador of the Year

GAFFER’S IRON VERDICT United’s 2015/16 Sky Bet League One campaign ended in defeat to Scunthorpe United at Bramall Lane on Sunday. Afterwards, boss Nigel Adkins faced the media to offer his thoughts. He remarked: “We
haven’t achieved our goal this season, now it is time to reflect and ensure we come back bigger, better and stronger next season. “Despite not being able to make the play-offs, following defeat at Coventry, we wanted to
finish the campaign in a positive manner with a good performance and result. “It didn’t happen, despite us training hard throughout the week in the build-up. Scunthorpe deservedly got the three points
and defended well in numbers throughout the game. “They dropped deep and we couldn’t break them down, we didn’t achieve the result we wanted and ultimately everyone is disappointed.”
By Andrew Smith A week of change is well underway at Bramall Lane. The first big change at the lane, was Sheffield United Co-Chairman, Jim Phipps, announcing his resignation from the club. An announcement of this kind was expected after Phipps went silent across his social media, something he was normally actively on. His resignation was closure on three years of failure in League One, when Prince Abdullah and Phipps arrived they set out on a swift return to the Premier League. Three managers later the Blades have fallen to their lowest league position since 1983. In a statement on Phipps’ FaceBook, he said: “What I have not been able to give you, and what we all desire, I wish for you with all my heart: serial promotions and a return to the Premier League.” After a disappointing 2-0 defeat by Scunthorpe United, in which home support turned on Adkins and his side, a series of changes are expected. Several players futures are in doubt
at the club, including regulars such as Jay McEveley and Ryan Flynn. After chants of ‘sacked in the morning’ in Adkins’ direction doubts have been risen on the future of the United boss. The futures of the manager and the playing staff are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks. The Blades begin preparations for their sixth season in the third tier, after such a disappointing season, preparations for next season must start sooner rather than later. Last season’s preparations were halted by a managerial change, if a decision is made to rid of Adkins, it would be beneficial to do so before he starts his own preseason programme.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 IN A VERY GOOD MOMENT LOTS OF DRAMA ON THE WAY From the outset, Carlos Carvalhal has said the Owls are underdogs in the Sky Bet Championship to mount a promotion challenge and secure a play-off berth. But with a number of key factors working in tandem to make the club strong on and off the pitch including, hard work, team spirit, togetherness, quality of players and support, Wednesday will head into the play-offs in good shape. The Owls face Brighton in the play-off semi final first leg on Friday. Both league meetings finished 0-0 but Carlos believes his side now are in a better moment and said: “We have given some rest to the players and have done specific work with the players that have been playing often. “Now, we will prepare for the game very well and we know we have a difficult opponent. We played before with them and we draw the both games. “But I think we are in a better way in this moment than we were then so we have expectations.” The head coach is now looking for a repeat performance of the Cardiff clash on Friday.
That day, over 30,000 Owls fans roared the team on to victory and into the play-offs in one of the club’s best displays of the season. “Our fans will give a very strong answer I am absolutely sure,” he said. “Like in the Cardiff game, if the players make mistakes, the fans will give
strength and we will be strong on Friday. “We understand the opponent is strong but as I have said from the beginning, we are outsiders in the competition but at the same time we are in a very good moment so let’s see what will happen.”
Never short of excitement and drama, Barry Bannan is sure the play-offs will live up to their reputation this time around. The Scot is looking forward to everything the end of season playoff lottery will throw at the Owls having successfully gained a top six finish. Brighton, Hull, Derby and Wednesday are the four competing for a place in the Premier League via the play-off route and Bannan said: “You would rather be in our position than going on holiday after the last game of the season. “There is going to be lots of drama and lots of ups and downs. Hopefully we can go into these games and come out the other end victorious. I’m confident we have the
ability to do that.” And Bannan has plenty of ambition beyond that. The influential midfield man is eager to get into the top flight with the Owls and be a success amongst the elite. He continued: “I think the teams going up now, teams like Bournemouth who went up last year, have survived comfortably in the end. “Leicester went on to win the league and deservedly so and it just
shows that if you get up there with the right things in place behind you, then you’ve got a great chance of being a success. “It’s the best league in the world without a doubt, the Premier League is where you want to be. “Everybody in our changing room wants to be there and we’ve given ourselves a great chance.”

Jose Semedo has been there every step of the way in the Owls’ rise up the Football League since 2011. From joining the club ahead of the League 1 promotion campaign five years ago, Semedo would love nothing more than for Wednesday to complete the journey and gain promotion back to the Premier League. The Owls are now preparing for their biggest game of the season at home to Brighton in the play-off semi final first leg at Hillsborough. And the 31-year-old believes that the special atmosphere on Friday evening will spur every player on and he said: “It’s going to be a
special moment, the play-offs are very special and it’s different to the league. “The atmosphere will be very special. If you think we had all those fans at Wolves when the result wasn’t the most important thing, then imagine what it will be like on Friday at
THE SHAKEY
Hillsborough. “The fans have been with us every step of the way since promotion in 2012 and they will have the same feeling. “It’s been an incredible journey and we hope to carry on like this. With the kind of support we get, I think we can do it.”
