ALBERT SNODGRASS

My wife’s been nagging me to dig a deep hole in the garden to obtain water. She means well. I’m a kind of person who doesn’t take instructions from anybody. Which explains why I failed my driving test. I’ve heard that if a bear attacks you, you should play dead. Sounds suspiciously like something a bear would say... I couldn’t sleep last night so I decided to play on my drums. I also learnt that my neighbour has Tourette’s. Drums with no skins. You can’t beat them. A man goes to a restaraunt and orders a burger. As he waits for it to arrive he sees the chef squashing it under his arm. He says, “that’s bloody disgusting, I’m not eating that.” The waiter says, “If you think that’s disgusting you should see how he makes doughnuts.” I once froze some orange flavoured fizzy drink to make a lolly. Fanta stick. One thing I found out last night. Never try making spaghetti on toast after you’ve taken acid. That opens up a whole can of worms. New Scientist magazine reports that a team of British engineers in Bristol have developed a car that runs on human waste ... I bet that “new car smell” doesn’t last very long. My friend said to me today, “Do you think history really repeats itself?” I replied, “You asked me this question yesterday and my answer was no, and it’s still no.”

The Seven Years’ War begins when Great Britain declares war on France. Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII of England, is beheaded for adultery, treason, and incest. Holocaust: The first prisoners arrive at a new concentration camp at Auschwitz. An earthquake hits northern Algeria killing more than 2,000 people. The Wright brothers are granted U.S. patent number 821,393 for their “Flying-Machine”. The Good Friday Agreement is accepted in a referendum in Northern Ireland with 75% voting yes. A Sheffield Teaching Hospitals employee has signed up for a 3k run through Graves Park this Summer in memory of her mother in law. Susan Hitchen who works in the Estates Department as a Commissioning Manager, will take on the 3k run on the 10th July alongside her husband and 2 children to raise vital funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Run in the Park welcomes families, friends and colleagues to don their running vests in support of the cancer charity and is well attended by hospital staff, fundraisers and patients alike. Now into its eighth year, the cancer charity is encouraging participants of all ages and abilities to take on either the 3k fun run or 10k race on the 10th July through Graves Park as part of this popular event. Susan (33), who lives in Dronfield, will take part in the event for the 3rd time in memory of her motherin-law, Christine Hitchen who sadly passed away in 2015 after fighting cancer. After being diagnosed with Adrenal Cancer back in 2001 and having several operations and treatments over the years at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, including Weston Park Hospital; Christine passed away last year surrounded by her loving family. “We are heartbroken,’ said Susan, “Christine was a fighter and although she battled her disease for many years and received the best possible care, she did so with a smile because that’s the sort of person she was.” “She will be missed by so many and her memory will live on for a very long time. We took part in Run in the Park in 2014 and 2015 to support her

A complex set of energies this week, can see you sparkle socially, learn new ideas and expand your consciousness, but you’ll need to be aware that some things that appear to hold great potential may have hidden or less obvious catches Aries. Call for more news and advice…

Last week’s Full Moon is still cascading planetary energy into your situation this week. And the focus is very much on how you think and how you express yourself to others. It may seem to you that other people have very high expectations of what you will do for them. Call for more…

Extra monies can come into your situation this week as your ruler Venus moves into the sign of Gemini. She also blends in the second half of this week with the Sun, and your love of life’s luxuries will be emphasised. However, Saturn cautions you not to be too extravagant. Call for more…

Your traditional ruler Mars arrives back in your sign this week, where he will be broadly for the next two months. If a recent idea is not quite gaining the traction you would hope it’s possible that you may have to go through a period of revision Scorpio. Call for more astral advice…

A time of new beginnings is sparked around relationships. Yet, with Saturn emphasising your sector of relating, and forging tricky links to both Jupiter and Neptune, you’ll need to look beyond superficial appearances and keep influential people on-side. Call for more news and advice…

People can seem much more sensitive this week, or is it you who is going to be noticing more the comings and goings around your human interactions? There is a fabulous chance in the second half of the week to connect with someone in a different and more uplifting way. Call for more…

This is a week when people can start to appreciate just how charismatic you can be. Whilst it’s pleasing to get positive feedback from your perspective, you need to be firmly welded to the idea of quality rather than quantity. Careful marshalling of resources will also be important. Call for more…

A sense of realism around resources, values and attitudes and the way these mesh in with others, including friends, is going to be important. However, a glorious link between the Sun and the newly arrived Venus in Gemini, can add extra lustre to your love life and social strands. Call for more…

The trick for you at the moment is coming to terms with your expectations and the limitations which may be standing between what you want, and what is possible. The key to progress is going to be the quality of your relationships with those who can help guide your future. Call for more…

STAFF MEMBER STRIDES OUT AT RUN IN THE PARK TO THANK HOSPITAL FOR CARE

during treatment and now we will do so again in her memory.” Run in the Park, which last year saw over 900 people attend, has raised over an incredible £300,000 since it first began 8 years ago and each year attracts more runners wanting to raise money to support the vital work of Weston Park Hospital. Susan continued, “It will be a sad and poignant day but also a celebration of Christine’s life. The event is a brilliant way for families and friends of patients receiving treatment at Weston Park Hospital to come together and make a real difference by raising sponsorship and taking on either a 3k run or a longer 10k race.” “The event has a carnival-like feel to it and there’s so much going on for runners of all ages, plus the atmosphere created by the hundreds of spectators cheering on from the side-lines.” The cancer charity needs to raise over £2 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep patients at the forefront of cancer treatment. Charity Fundraising Manager Helen gentle said, “We are very grateful to Susan and her family for signing up for Run in the Park despite their recent loss.” “The event is an opportunity for patients, relatives and friends of those fighting cancer, or who have sadly lost their battles, to come together and make a real difference to cancer services across the region.” “There’s something for everyone on the day, and whether you’re an experienced runner or just running for fun, we’d encourage you to sign up and join us at this special event.” To support Susan’s fundraising for Run in the Park visit her JustGiving page at: http://www.justgiving. com/Hitchen-WestonParkHospital To sign up for Run in the Park and take on the 3k fun run or 10k race at Graves Park visit www. runinthepark.org.uk

STUDY AIMS TO IMPROVE OLDER PEOPLE’S HEALTH A UK-wide clinical trial is set to examine whether a commonly used heart pill and a food supplement could improve the health of older people across the UK by improving muscle strength. Researchers at the University of Aberdeen, University of Dundee, and Imperial College London are testing whether the treatments can prevent the weakening of muscles that commonly affects older people. The research team is aiming to recruit 450 people aged 70 and over from across the UK. Participants will be given a heart pill (perindopril) or a matching dummy tablet, and also a food supplement powder (leucine) or matching dummy powder. All the participants will take part for a year, and the research team will test how muscle strength, muscle size, daily function and quality of life change over the year.

“Muscle weakness, which we call sarcopenia, is really common as we get older, and I see many patients in my work as a geriatrician who are affected by this problem” said Dr Miles Witham, lead researcher for the study at the University of Dundee. “Older people with weak muscles find it much harder to get around, or to climb stairs, and are more prone to falling and injuring themselves. In the long term people with weaker muscles are more likely to need help to look after themselves. So keeping muscles working well is important in keeping older people active and independent. Although we know exercise helps to improve muscle strength even in very old people, it’s important to find new ways to keep muscles working well in older people – and to help improve strength when muscles are weak. That’s why we are excited to be running this new trial.

Previous research has suggested that both perindopril and leucine might improve muscle strength, and both these treatments have been used safely in older people for many years. It is only by doing this big trial that we will really know if these treatments are going to benefit older people though.” The £1.4 million trial, named LACE, is run by Tayside Clinical Trials Unit and is funded by the Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) Programme, an MRC (Medical Research Council) and NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) partnership (NIHR 15/53/03). The research team are collaborating with doctors at 15 centres across the UK, and results from the trial are expected in 2019. Anyone wishing more information on the study, including how they can volunteer to take part, can contact Karen Smith (Trial Manager) on 01382 383265 or go to: www.lacetrial.org.uk

CALLS FOR PUBLIC TO TAKE PART IN DRIVERLESS CAR TRIALS "Motorists" are being sought to take part in the country's first public selfdriving car trials. The tests are set to take place at the UK Smart Mobility Living Lab in Greenwich, south-east London, later in the year and people wanting to take part are now being invited to register their interest. Those selected to participate will be asked to ride in an autonomous vehicle and then share their views on the experience.

The trials form part of the £8 million Greenwich Automated Transport Environment research project. It is aimed at investigating the use of driverless car technology and promoting its acceptance in the UK. Professor Nick Reed, director of the UK's Transport Research Laboratory, says the trials will help take the idea of self-driving vehicles "from fiction to reality". Business secretary Sajid Javid says news of the public trials shows that the UK is becoming a world leader when it comes to self-driving car technology. Members of the public are also invited to register for a programme of workshops, aimed at helping to shape the future of driverless vehicles and due to be held next month.

Motorists who kill or seriously injure people as a result of driving dangerously are set to face tougher sentences, according to an MP. Greg Mulholland says the tougher penalties are expected to be announced during this week’s Queen’s Speech. At the moment those convicted of causing death by dangerous driving face a maximum prison sentence of 14 years. But Liberal Democrat Mr Mulholland, who has been campaigning for changes to the law, says those convicted of the offence are, on average, spending just four years in prison. The sentences given to motorists who kill - including drunk drivers - often do

The Leeds North West MP says: “It cannot be right that while the sentence for homicide is life in prison, the average sentence for a criminal driver who kills someone is just four years.” Mr Mulholland says he welcomes reports that tougher penalties are to be announced by ministers in the Queen’s Speech. The move, he adds, will help to ensure that the victims of criminal driving and their families get the justice they deserve. PROMOTIONAL

PRICE

Limited Period Only RING FOR DETAILS The Biomat is a sixteen-layer medical device that incorporates negative ion and far infrared ray therapies with the health benefits of amethyst to produce a "heating pad" that gives long-lasting healing effects. Used to treat and prevent many different ailments, using a Biomat means healthier living. Biomats will improve anyone's energy, health and immune system. Biomats are great for patients with Cancer, Lyme disease, MS, Diabetes, Stress, Arthritis and all other ailments.

ScientiďŹ c Fact: Exposure to far infrared rays are the key to preventing metastatic cancer and strengthening immunity.

Biomats are a perfect way to fight off disease. The Biomat heats and activates the body from the inside out. The same infrared rays you would receive from the sun are projected deep into your body. As your body temperature rises, the biomat induces a false fever that then stimulates your immune system. As a result, your body detoxifies and all of your bodily functions are effected in a positive way.

07493 469659

Warming your body in this way has also been proven to prevent Cancer.

Infrared Rays raise body temperature, warming the blood and expanding the blood vessels. There is an increase in peripheral blood flow and volume, resulting in improved circulation & heart function.

EYES OF THE WORLD WISH MAKERS NEEDED FOR ON YOUDAN TROPHY AS SHEFFIELD WISH CHILD LEGENDS LINE UP TO DRAW

Welsh international footballing hero John Hartson joins forces with former Manchester United player and now Oxford United manager Michael Appleton to perform the draw for Sheffield’s second Youdan Trophy this Thursday (May 19th). Over 800 players from some of the biggest football clubs on the planet are set to take part in the August 2016 event. Teams from Rosenborg to Everton, Seattle Sounders to FC Basel and Newcastle United to Royal Antwerp are lined up to join top-flight clubs from Africa, Europe and the USA for the tournament which includes the city’s own Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. The draw is set to take place at 12 noon at Manchester’s National Football Museum and will be streamed worldwide at: http://www.youdantrophy.com/ live.html It can also be followed at #YoudanDraw2016. The tournament will be played in Sheffield – the birthplace of the game. The Youdan Trophy tournament has quadrupled in size from its debut in 2015 and now boasts a string of UK Premiership and Championship clubs including Watford, Birmingham City, Stoke City, Derby County, Charlton Athletic, Queens Park Rangers and Middlesbrough. Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers will represent Scotland whilst Quatar’s Aspire Academy will be the first Youdan Trophy team to travel from the Middle East to Sheffield – the birthplace of the game. Keith Hackett, director of tournament organisers YouAre-The-Ref.com said: “The line-up for the 2016 tournament has exceeded all expectations –

we’re absolutely thrilled with it. “The Youdan Trophy is set to become the biggest and most prestigious tournament of its kind in the whole of Europe and we’re confident it will become a globally recognizable Sheffield brand in the coming months and years. “The competition is unique in the UK – that is why it is proving so popular. It is bringing some of the best academy teams at under 16 and under 14 from professional clubs around the world to compete at the highest level. Sheffield’s Youdan Trophy will be known as the place to see the sporting stars of tomorrow.” Sheffield-based You-Are-TheRef.com, which is the world’s leading independent authority and education platform for match officials, are behind the creation of the competition which celebrates football’s first ever tournament; the Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. which was played only once in 1867 at Bramall Lane. The Youdan Trophy is set to take place in Sheffield from August 1st-5th. Group games will take place at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park and the Warminster Road facility of the University of Sheffield.

(Belgium), Seattle Sounders (USA), Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. Youdan Trophy 2016 U14: Brentford, Charlton Athletic, Derby County, Everton, Glasgow Celtic (Scotland), Glasgow Rangers (Scotland), JHR Rotterdam (Holland), Aspire Academy (Qatar), Maiden City (Northern Ireland), Middlesbrough, Birmingham City, Royal Antwerp (Belgium), Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke City and Watford. Nine year old Preston from Sheffield is living with lifethreatening Leukodystrophy and Muscular Dystrophy, which means the white matter in his nervous system isn’t developing properly and his muscles are slowly weakening. He spent most of 2014 in hospital with pneumonia and now needs a machine to help him breathe as he sleeps. He is also fed through a tube into his stomach. Despite these challenges, when Preston gets home from school, he likes playing games on a tablet and found a way to operate it with his nose. He also loves painting and uses his toes to hold the brush. He would rather be outside where he can lie in the sunshine, play on the swings or push along on his adapted bike. But his garden is unsafe and overgrown. So when his family turned to Make-A-Wish UK to grant his dearest wish, they chose a garden makeover to enrich his life for years to come. Work will include removing a hedge, running a fence around the perimeter of the garden on three sides, re-turfing the grass area and erecting decking with ramp access

off the back of the property to a second decked area. This will give Preston a level of independence and enable him to experience all the sights, sounds, smells and sensations that flowers, outdoor noises and textures bring. Preston’s mum Laura said: “At the moment I take Preston to my parent’s garden next door because our garden isn’t safe as he just loves to just lie on the grass. He also likes using his walker but it’s cramped in our bungalow so he’d love to be able to use it safely outside too.”

Make-A-Wish is calling on the community to help make Preston’s wish a magical reality by joining his team of ‘Wish Makers’ and simply donating to his fundraising page at https:// campaign.justgiving.com/charity/ makeawish/preston

You too have the opportunity to make a real difference to everyday life for a remarkable young boy. To find out how else you can get involved, please call 01276 40 50 57

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve had a few discussions this week regarding litter, one of my pet hates. I turned up at a fishery recently, and as I wandered the banks looking for a suitable spot to enjoy the sunshine, I came upon a complete bivvy, trashed and just left at the side of the lake. Admittedly, it was a budget bivvy, but still a bivvy, and left within were the remnants of the previous occupant’s disposable barbeque, some lovingly arranged empty beer cans, but worst of all, some human excrement. I was appalled, and you should be too, because this ‘angler’ stalks amongst us… So whose fault is litter? I visit numerous venues in my work for some of the popular weekly fishing publications, and some are immaculate, some are less so, but litter is the one thing which really gets up the angler’s nose, but it’s the angler to blame! I know of fisheries which have supplied industrial skips, which are unfortunately jammed with rotting rubbish, which is left to fester, and in turn attracts rats and foxes, which then proceed to strew the rubbish everywhere creating an even worse mess. I know of fisheries which provide adequate bins, where staff empty them daily, and still find litter stuffed into bushes, under boats, or behind pegs, so what is the answer? Unfortunately, fisheries are charged to properly dispose of your rubbish. EU directives see it as ‘commercial’ waste transfer, requiring a licence to get rid of, and guess what? There is a charge, a tax, if you prefer, to be paid… by the fishery! How is that fair? We need to take responsibility! If it were my venue, my rules would apply, and all bins would be removed. The angler would (as it should be) be accountable for all rubbish on the peg, and rounds would be made. Any litter, and you’re off the water, and you don’t come back, and you certainly wouldn’t get a refund; let’s call it an ‘admin charge’ for clearing up after you. After a few have been ejected, word would get around, and anglers would either cease to visit, (wouldn’t want those anglers anyway) and the rest of us would be able to enjoy our fishing in clean, pleasant, and sanitary conditions. It’s your rubbish, you deal with it! Leaving it on the bank for others to find, especially foul litter, is disgusting, and if it’s you, then you should be bloody ashamed! The EA have announced changes to the 2017 rod licence; it’s in the magazines, and you can find the detail online. The much requested three rod licence has been granted, a charge of £45 to be levied, and the two rod licence will rise to £30, an 11% increase. The single rod anglers are complaining that it’s unfair to have a price rise (the first in seven years) and that a single rod pass should be put in place, and I’ve even seen someone moan that the abolition of the junior licence, to encourage newcomers, should not

be subsidised by raising the price for everyone else! Since it became public knowledge, the usual proclamations have been made by internet anglers who state that they will refuse to buy a licence, (they will, obviously, but will stamp their feet on Facebook) and that the EA should stop producing otters and shoot anything which remotely resembles a cormorant, grebe, goosesander or whatever, before the licence is worthwhile. I’ve got news for you, it’s law, you have to have one to fish legally, so there is no point whatsoever in banging your gums on social media, if you don’t have one and get caught, you’ll face a hefty fine and confiscation of your kit. I couldn’t afford that, so I’ll buy a licence, but here’s the rub, I don’t agree with it either, not until the EA engage properly with the end user… In the past, I’ve championed the EA, but having read the recent inflammatory social media own goal about the establishment of otters, and the EA contribution to it, and done a little research, I think it’s a real kick in the teeth to fishery owners whose stocks and livelihoods are being decimated by an apex predator; one introduced without proper aforethought, without any safeguards, and without any support for fishery owners who are seeing their livelihoods chewed up and spat out by furry killers. The protection of their environment, whilst promoting these damn things, is seeing valuable fish killed, throats ripped out by otters who are not killing to eat, just for the hell of it, and it needs addressing! Anglers need to be listened to, because the

FISHING IN THE FENS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT We Welcome all Anglers to

licence fee is probably an awful lot of the precept the EA get each year. Upset enough anglers, let uncontrolled predation ruin enough fisheries, and eventually, some will take the risk of not paying, and as funding falls, the first thing to go will be the bailiffs; not those tie wearing, decision making Government lackeys in EA management with gold plated pensions. More anglers will then take the chance and opt not to purchase a licence, a never ending circle in which we all lose… I know the EA do some good work, I know that certain action groups within angling, and certain individuals, work their socks off to make positive changes; I’ve worked alongside them in the past, I know the boots on the ground are stymied by the pen pushers who never set foot on the bank, but come on, really start to work with anglers rather than against them. There is enough knowledge within the angling sector to make some really positive changes to protect angling in the future, to control and integrate predators properly, to educate anglers who take fish for the table, to prosecute those who break the law, to improve habitats, to share space with nature and work positively with the EA… so why do they not listen to our genuine concerns? I truly believe that relations between the EA and anglers are at an all-time low, but I see the blame firmly at the feet of the EA, which is sad. I’ll buy a licence, just like I do every year, but this year, for the very first time, I resent it…

I have loved my time at every club I have been at and I have always left them in a better position than I found them. I have never been afraid of making the big decisions. This is a brave one, I could have easily moved elsewhere, I could have spoken to a couple of Championship clubs, but I wouldn’t have slept at night knowing I had turned the Blades down.”

“This season’s home shirt has once again incorporated the traditional and popular features which have now become synonymous with Rotherham United,” he beamed. “In addition to this, we have added a yellow trim from one of our most popular shirts over the years giving this strip a real retro feel and we are delighted to have Hodge Clemco on board as our new home shirt sponsor, who are thrilled with the look and feel of the 2016/17 kit. The release for supporters to purchase the shirt is yet to be revealed but is expected to be available in-store and online during the first week of June. OWLS NEWS2015/16 CARLOS HAD A DREAM WEMBLEY TICKET DETAILS Carlos Carvalhal described the chance to manage at Wembley as a dream as his side booked their place in the Championship play-off final following a 1-1 draw away at Brighton that meant a 3-1 aggregate win. Brighton took the lead when Lewis Dunk poked in a cross at the far post following a heavy spell of pressure from the Seagulls. The Owls equalised when a Ross Wallace cross from the right-hand side missed everyone and found its way into the corner of Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale’s net. The 1-1 draw made the aggregate score 3-1 to Wednesday following the Owls’ 2-0 win at Hillsborough last week. Carvalhal said: “First I want to mention Brighton. “They’ve had a very good season and have been unlucky towards the end of the season. “I think they deserved to be promoted, but this doesn’t mean that we don’t, because we have also had a good season. “Today we had to fight like a team because Brighton are a good side. “This was not our best game of the season, but today was about the fight of the players.”

Wednesday can now look forward to a playoff final at Wembley, something that Carvalhal described as a dream come true. He added: “When I was a boy we used to watch the cup finals at Wembley. “When I got the chance to come to England I never thought in my first year that I would go to Wembley.

“It has been an ambition and something I have dreamed of. “We have a 50-50 chance, we are the underdogs because the other teams have been ready for longer, this is our first season as a group. “But, we have the same chance once we get to the final, and we will play to win.”

Sheffield Wednesday are pleased to confirm ticket information to supporters for the Sky Bet Championship playoff final at Wembley on Saturday 28 May. Following the semi final victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, the Owls will face either Derby County or Hull City in the final. Wednesday will be allocated 38,889 tickets for the West End of Wembley. Pricing categories at Wembley are split into five sections and there is also a concession rate for supporters aged 65 and over as well as for children aged 16 and under.
