Balancing his career between his solo work and guesting on the current Eric Clapton album / tour, his widely-varied CV also includes Roxy Music, BB King, Nick Lowe, Roger Waters, Squeeze, Mike + Mechanics, Elton John, The Smiths and Ringo Starr to name just a few. He has written such classics as ‘How Long’, co-

written ‘Love Will Keep Us Alive’ for the Eagles and ‘Over My Shoulder’ with Mike Rutherford. However, his other career is his real passion and that is the solo Paul Carrack. That is the real Paul Carrack. He has now recorded 18 solo albums and the latest, Soul Shadows was his highest chart entry to date. His sold-out shows have created a fan base who have come to love his incredible live performances and they are not to be missed. In 2017, he embarks on his biggest-ever tour with 25 shows in the UK alone. Never one to rest, he’s already planning a new album too! This much-loved blue-eyed soul singer and firm favourite with Radio 2 listeners continues to stride forward on a hot streak of creativity that shows no signs of slowing down.

Father O’Malley answers the phone. ‘Hello, is this Father O’Malley?’ ‘This is HMRC, can you help us?’ ‘I can!’ ‘Do you know a Albert Snodgrass?’ ‘I do!’ ‘Is he a member of your congregation?’ ‘He is!’ ‘Did he donate £10,000 to the church?’ ‘He will.’ A city slicker shoots a duck out in the country. As he’s retrieving it, a farmer walks up and stops him, claiming that since the duck is on his farm, it technically belongs to him. After minutes of arguing, the farmer proposes they settle the matter “country style.” “What’s country style?” asks the city boy. “Out here in the country,” the farmer says, “when two fellers have a dispute, one feller kicks the other one in the balls as hard as he can. Then that feller, why, he kicks the first one as hard as he can. And so forth. Last man standin’ wins the dispute.” Warily the city boy agrees and prepares himself. The farmer hauls off and kicks him in the groin with all his might. The city boy falls to the ground in the most intense pain he’s ever felt, crying like a baby and rolling around on the ground. Finally he staggers to his feet and says, “All right, n-now it’s–it’s m-my turn.” The farmer grins. “Forget it, you win. Keep the duck.”

A guy was sitting quietly reading his paper when his wife walked up behind him and whacked him on the head with a rolled-up magazine. “What the hell was that for?” he asked. “That was for the piece of paper in your pants pocket with the name Mary Lou written on it,” she replied. “But you don’t understand,” he pleaded. “Two weeks ago when I went to the races, Mary Lou was the name of one of the horses I bet on.” “Oh honey, I’m sorry,” she said. “I should have known there was a good explanation.” Three days later he was watching a ball game on TV when she walked up and hit him in the head again, this time with the iron skillet, which knocked him out cold. When he came to, he asked, “What was that for?” he pleaded. “Your horse just called!”

DRUG-DRIVING FIGURES ‘TIP OF ICEBERG’ New figures showing that thousands of motorists have been arrested for drug-driving over the last year may represent only the “tip of an iceberg”, the RAC is warning. Almost 7,800 people were arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs in England and Wales during the 12 months to April, figures obtained via Freedom of Information requests show. Although data was obtained from 35 police forces, eight did not supply their figures and the RAC points out that its research suggests more than one in 20 motorists may have driven after taking drugs. The figures - supplied to BBC Radio 5 Live - show the Metropolitan Police made more arrests (1,636) than any other force. A further 573 motorists were arrested by Greater Manchester Police with officers in Cheshire arresting the third highest total (546). Police were issued with testing kits after new legislation was introduced to target those driving under the influence of eight illegal drugs and eight prescription drugs. The kits enable officers to screen motorists for cocaine and cannabis at the roadside. The presence of other drugs such as heroin, ecstasy and LSD can be tested for at a police station. For some forces the introduction of the test and the legislation has had a huge impact on the number of arrests.

MONTY’S

OF SHEFFIELD SERVICE & MOT FROM £150inc. VAT

South Yorkshire Police, for example, saw drug driving-related arrests go up from 13 in the year the test was introduced to 456 the following year. Pete Williams, the RAC’s head of external affairs, says: “We suspect that these conviction rates may well understate how widespread drug-driving is - this could represent the tip of an iceberg. “The RAC’s Report on Motoring 2015 revealed that 6% of motorists admitted to having driven under the influence of drugs in the last 12 months, whereas in 2014 the rate was just 2%. “This may be because the introduction of the new drug-driving legislation has increased awareness of the prescription drugs, including sedatives and stimulants, which are now outlawed. “It is also a challenge for the police to detect and enforce the law. The number of full-time dedicated roads policing officers has dropped by 27% since 2010 to fewer than 4,000 across England and Wales. “While offences like speeding and running a red light can be captured by cameras, when it comes to drug-driving there is no alternative to a physical police officer to detect and enforce the law.”

Evans had previously indicated that he would be disappointed if the first episode pulled in less than five million viewers, the final show featuring Jeremy Clarkson having been watched by 5.3 million last summer. Despite falling short of that target, Top Gear still had more viewers than any other programme in Sunday’s 8pm time slot and an audience share of nearly 23%. The opening episode saw Evans joking with viewers that he had “won custody” of The Stig, the iconic masked driver who became a favourite while Clarkson was at the helm. Clarkson left the show last year following a fracas with a producer.

FAMILY FUNDRAISE AT CHARITY RUN TO WARN OTHERS OF SKIN CANCER DANGER A family from Tickhill have signed up to their local cancer charity's run this summer to raise vital funds in memory of their beloved daddy and husband. Catherine White and her 2 children, Jack Thomas (11) and Isabelle Mae (9) will be joined by brotherin-law to be, Garry Boon at Weston Park Cancer Charity's Run in the Park event after losing her loving husband, Neil, to skin cancer last August. Catherine's sister, Rebecca and her Mum are also taking part in the run. Neil was diagnosed with skin cancer back in 2003, just before he married Catherine, but after successful surgery and treatment at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, he was given the all clear and continued to live his life to the full. But in March 2015, after experiencing bad migraines, father of 2 Neil visited the doctor who carried out further tests and confirmed the worst- the cancer had returned and this time it was terminal. Neil was referred to Weston Park Hospital to begin treatment which would help keep further spreading of his disease at bay, but sadly just 5 months later Neil's cancer become too aggressive for him to fight and he passed away at the age of 38 leaving behind his devastated family and friends. Catherine, a Teaching Assistant at Tickhill Estfeld Primary School said "We just can't thank the staff at Weston Park Hospital enough for all they did for us and Neil throughout his final months." "Although they weren't able to save Neil, they were incredibly kind and caring from the day we arrived and really made us all feel at ease and confident that Neil was in the best hands." "We decided to all sign up for Run in the Park this July and support Weston Park Cancer Charity as I know it's what Neil would have done in his quest to help others, even in the months before he passed away." Run in the Park welcomes families, friends and colleagues to don their running vests in support of the cancer charity and is well attended by hospital staff, fundraisers and patients alike. Now into its eighth year, the cancer charity is encouraging participants of all ages and abilities to take on either the 3k fun run or 10k race as part of the event. Despite a difficult diagnosis and challenging months ahead, the White family spent their precious final

months trying to raise funds for various charities in hope of preventing other families going through the same turmoil. They have continued to fundraise in Neil’s memory and his daughter Isabelle recently held a cake sale raising over £340 for Weston Park Cancer Charity. "Anything we can do to raise awareness of skin cancer is a positive step for us. If only 1 person learns something from our story then we will have at least accomplished something good from this terrible loss." "We're really looking forward to being involved in Run in the Park and being part of the fight against cancer locally." Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Weston Park Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. In conjunction with The University of Sheffield, Weston Park Cancer Charity has recently enabled the appointment of a clinical research fellow at Weston Park Hospital. The post has been filled by Dr Shobha Silva who will conduct a research study, which aims to develop a simple blood test for melanoma skin cancer patients which could be used in the future to identify patients who have suffered a relapse. Fortunately over two-thirds of melanoma patients are cured of their cancer. However, up to 20% of patients experience metastatic relapse (where the melanoma returns and spreads). Currently the outcome for such patients is not very good, with the average survival less than a year. Recently, new drugs have been developed, including immunotherapies, which have shown great promise. Melanoma is the 5th most common cancer in the UK with around 13,000 new cases of melanoma diagnosed each year. More than a quarter of cases are diagnosed in people under 50, which is unusual compared to most other types of cancer. More than 2,000 people die every year in the UK from melanoma. Garry Boon, who is set to marry Catherine's sister, has also signed up to Run in the Park in memory of Neil and although an inexperienced runner, has

vowed to complete the 10k route on the day. "Neil was such a generous and caring person." Said Garry "Less than a month before he passed away he twice cycled over 100 miles to raise money for charity, but that was just Neil. He always put everyone ahead of himself and he was taken far too early." "Many people have already raised money for him, including an incredible £3,000 at his funeral, which is testament to his character and the impact he had on everyone who was lucky enough to meet him." "Despite years of barracking about the fact that I can't actually run I decided to sign up to Run in the Park because sadly, Neil leaves behind a wife and 2 young children which is all too common a statistic." The cancer charity needs to raise over £2 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep patients at the forefront of cancer treatment. Cancer Charity Senior Fundraising Manager, Helen

Gentle said, "Catherine and her family have been through such a difficult few months but it's so touching that despite everything, they are joining us at Run in the Park in a bid to help others living with a cancer diagnosis." "We rely on support from within the community and are so very grateful that people who have been affected by cancer can offer their support at our important fundraising events and raise funds which will ultimately help us save more lives." "Run in the Park offers runners of all ages and abilities the choice of a 10k race or 3k run and is a great event for friends and families alike to come together in support of one local cause." WIN TICKETS TO SEE TOM JONES LIVE AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE The legendary Sir Tom Jones is set to wow music lovers this summer with an evening of top-class entertainment at Doncaster Racecourse. The iconic Welsh singer will perform at Town Moor on Saturday, June 25 following a packed evening of racing as part of this year’s Music Live series. Tom became one of the most popular vocalists ever to emerge from the 1960s with an eclectic musical mix spanning pop, rock, soul, R&B, dance, country and gospel. With more than 100 million record sales generated by hits such as It’s Not Unusual, Kiss, Delilah and What’s New Pussycat, Tom and his band will entertain crowds with a repertoire that spans five decades of popular music. He is still going strong and – at the age of 75 – attracted the best reviews of his career for

his three most recent albums, Long Lost Suitcase, Spirit in the Room and Praise & Blame. He is the latest act to perform at the racecourse this summer, which will also host performances by soul legends Simply Red and has already hosted 80s jazz funk legends Level 42 and Pop Idol Winner Will Young this summer. Last year a string of top bands – including ska band Madness, reggae rockers UB40 and New Romantic super-group Spandau Ballet – entertained thousands of music lovers in Doncaster. Kieron Gallagher, executive director at Doncaster Racecourse, said: “We are thrilled to be able to bring such a world-class star to South Yorkshire. With a global fan base, Sir Tom attracts supporters of all ages and musical tastes and his performance will undoubtedly

be one of the highlights of Music Live this summer. “We are much more than a racing venue and the calibre of bands that we’ve managed to attract has cemented our position as a premier events and entertainment destination.” Tickets are now on general sale and range from £40-£65 per person (£40 for the Grandstand, £50 County Enclosure and £65 Premier Enclosure) but people who buy in advance can enjoy a £5 discount on these prices. Advance ticket purchasers will also receive £5 in vouchers that will entitle them to discounts on selected drinks.

For further information about Doncaster Racecourse or to book tickets call 01302 304200 or go to www.doncasterracecourse.co.uk.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve been very lazy this week, having caught well earlier in the week, I returned to the same venue and sat a few pegs further along hoping to continue my good run of form on a Staffordshire club water. My first visit had been prolific; nine carp, all double figured fish, and nine good bream along with a few ‘pasties’ had seen me catch around 150lb of fish in total, and I fancied another go. I thought I was early enough to bag a prime spot, but after a cup of tea with the wife, I set out half an hour after I’d intended, and as a result, missed out on my previous peg. Conditions looked good however, a strong wind pushing into the bay, a bit of cloud, and a ripple on the water all looked as though it would suit, but I did take a few minutes to wander and check before selecting a spot. I’m glad I did, as I found several fish further down the bank, so shifted position to try and take advantage… Keen to reprise the success of my prior visit, I lobbed in a couple of handfuls of hemp and corn, a few pellets, and prepared to tackle up whilst my freebies worked their magic in the margins. The carp go like stink once hooked, and with fish to over 20lb, I’d chosen to use a strong rod, selecting a Sonik SK3 XTR, which has the grunt to deal with ‘hook and hold’ fishing as the hooked carp sought nearby snags. Twinned with a Tournos 10000 reel, it’s a real fighting kit which will hold any initial run, but is also soft enough in the tip to absorb any last second lunges as the fish is netted, and is also great fun to use. At the sharp end, a mono hook link (braid not allowed) and a size 10 hook (another rule) was baited with a small 10mm Mainline pop up and lowered into the water less than a rod length out. I’d already seen tails break the surface over the free offerings, so was quietly confident. Looking around, I noted several anglers feeder fishing at range. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve watched anglers fish as they always fish, the same method, at the same distance, from the same peg, (even using the same hook as last time because their rods are put away ready to fish) and this was the second time in a week that I’d witnessed it. The carp were under my feet, and others were basking on the

surface, so why persist with feeder fishing at sixty yards, when the fish were either so close they could be touched, or several feet off the lake bed? If you read fishing magazines, the need to fish a ‘feature’ is always emphasised, and in my opinion, there is no bigger feature than the margins. The very edge of the lake offers shelter, cover, and an abundant supply of food, whether from natural sources, or baits, or even passers by feeding the ducks, so why not look there first? Despite carp milling about under the rod tip, after the first fish tripped up within ten minutes, I was starting to struggle. A change of bait eventually bought a second fish, but I’d lost one, and missed two more, so something was wrong. I varied the length of the hooklink, changed the size of the hook, even swapped the lead for a bigger/smaller one, but was still finding it difficult to tempt a positive indication. I stopped feeding hemp, and concentrated on bigger pellets and small boilies, but could still only pick off odd fish before having to change something else; it was becoming very frustrating! Other anglers were also having problems, some had given up and gone home, some had wound in the rods and instead sensibly opted to sunbathe… it was a gorgeous day after all! I couldn’t find any rhythm, but eventually manged to pick off six decent carp, all low doubles, and a couple of bonus barbel which picked up pellet baits, but by the end of the session, I was flummoxed. I couldn’t work out what had changed over a two day period; conditions were almost identical, but the fish just weren’t playing by the rules. Other anglers had struggled as much as I, (which was some consolation) and they too were at a loss to explain what was going on. Perhaps the water temperature had risen, perhaps spawning wasn’t quite complete, perhaps we were all just doing it wrong? I’ll never know, and it will change again for next time, but I suppose that’s why it’s called fishing, not catching? Always a lesson to be learned, but I have no idea what it was this week….

WE WILL GO AGAIN Midfield man Sam Hutchinson says the Owls will take all the positives from the 2015/16 campaign and only grow stronger as a team from this point onwards. Having come so close to a return to the top flight, the former Chelsea man says that will now serve as inspiration for everyone at the club to go one better. Firmly believing Wednesday will only get stronger following the Wembley play-off final, he said: “To be so close as a team, it’s so

WILDER TAKING NO PRISONERS Chris Wilder has not wasted anytime in pursuing the aim of promotion at the Lane, the signings of Chris Hussey and Mark Duffy are evidence of the new transfer philosophy at Sheffield United. Wilder has dissected a squad that was largely overpaid and struggled to handle the pressure of playing in-front of 20,000 at the Lane. Reported target, Ryan Tafazolli, a 24-year-old centre back previously of Mansfield Town, had his move to Peterborough

disappointing because we had expectations but we go again next season and fingers crossed we can do it then. “I think we only get stronger as a team from this point. “This experience will make us stronger, when you lose a game like this, you take bits out of it and next season we will have a right go. “We have to be positive. Because we were so close, at the moment, we are really disappointed but we have had a great season and we will only get better.” He added: “We have a great manager, unbelievable fans, we have got a good team and with a couple of additions for next season, we will go again and that’s what we have to focus on.”

United confirmed this week. It is rumoured that the player was offered a better financial package to join the Posh, and so turned down a move to the Lane. It’s clear that United are trying to learn from mistakes of the past in terms of player contracts, for example, the issue of Dean Hammond being able to extend his contract, whilst being surplus to requirements in Wilder’s team. Previous League One seasons show that attracting the best talent within the division, and indeed

YOUNGSTER STUBBS SIGNS FIRST PROMISES PRO-DEAL QUALITY Sheffield Wednesday academy graduate Connor O’Grady has penned his first professional contract at Hillsborough. The talented teenager has signed with the Owls until the summer of 2017. O’Grady, a commanding central defender, joined the Wednesday youth ranks after spending six years with Premier League giants Manchester United. The native Sheffielder has since impressed at both Under-18 and Under-21 level, leading to his new-found professional status. He told swfc.co.uk: “This is a proud moment and I want to get my head down, work hard and make the best of this opportunity as possible. “I’ve gone from the top of one ladder to a different rung of another one and I am looking up. “I look at the likes of Joe Wildsmith how he’s progressed and Marcus Rashford, who I played with between the ages of eight to 14 at Manchester United, and see that opportunities can present themselves. “It’s up to me now to work as hard as I can to succeed through this contract and hopefully earn another one and another one after that.” the one below it, correlates to success in the league. Wilder has said this week that he is targeting three centre backs as a priority, but cooled rumours of a possible return for previous loan signing, Alex Baptiste. One thing is for certain at United next season, and that’s that the team will be playing in red and white stripes. After a bizarre season in white and red pin stripes, the famous stripes are back, and many will hope it coincides with the return of success at Bramall Lane.

New Rotherham United manager Alan Stubbs has pledged that he will only bring quality into the club as he prepares for a busy close season of transfer activity. Stubbs was officially unveiled as the new Millers boss at a press conference this afternoon, alongside assistant manager John Doolan. After completing his media duties at AESSEAL New York Stadium, Stubbs now faces the task of forging ahead with his summer recruitment plans. He revealed that the top of his agenda is finalising the futures of the five players who are currently in negotiations with the club, before promising to bring in some ‘exciting’ players to AESSEAL New York Stadium. “We have offered contracts to

MCSHEFFREY SIGNS FOR ROVERS Darren Ferguson has added another popular face to his squad for the 2016/17 season by signing Gary McSheffrey on a one year contract. McSheffrey follows last season’s loanee Tommy Rowe and has signed on a permanent basis, becoming Ferguson’s 6th signing of the summer for Doncaster Rovers. Rovers fans know exactly what Gary McSheffrey is capable of and will be pleased to see him returning to the Keepmoat Stadium after a successful loan spell last season. The striker scored on his debut for Rovers away at Colchester and followed that performance up with an impressive 6 assists in 7 games. “The board have been

five players here so there is a lot of work to be done,” Stubbs told www.themillers.co.uk “But for me that is exciting work because it is chance to try and mould the team around how I want to play. “We have been speaking about signings all night and all day. What we want to do is bring quality to the football club, it is not necessarily about bringing in a certain amount of players, we want to sign real quality that the fans can be excited by.” Stubbs enjoyed considerable success north of the border with Hibernian, after clinching the Scottish Cup just last month. The former Everton coach has

promised to bring with him the same brand of football which won many an admiring glance during his two year stint at Easter Road. “I am sure that the fans will see an exciting team on the pitch,” he added. “We want to play a brand of football that will get the fans excited, I like to play attacking football, but I also like to be a team that is hard to beat as well. “The club has established itself in The Championship over the past couple of years, so now it is about looking up rather than looking behind. With the help of everyone behind the scenes I am sure that we are going to have a busy summer.”

fantastic again,” said Darren Ferguson when talking about the signing. “We want to recruit quickly, we want to be aggressive in the market and the club have given me the chance to go and get the players I want before someone else does which is fantastic. “They take a lot of credit for pushing the signings through so far.”
