WOMEN OF STEEL STATUE TO BE UNVEILED THIS WEEKEND This weekend will see the unveiling of the Sheffield Women of Steel Statue, honouring all those wonderful women who worked in Sheffield’s steel works throughout two world wars. Barbara and her mum Gladys worked in the steel works – here are Barbara’s memories from their days as Women of Steel. “I was nine when the war broke out. It was like living through something that wasn’t real. I remember the blitz in

Sheffield when a string of bombs went off down St Phillips Road where we lived, and a land mine was dropped nearby. “Once the water supply was cut off to the whole street except our house. My mum put a bath in the front yard and filled it, so all the neighbours could come round and get some water. “For a time the schools were closed so all the children did home service – a teacher would come to the house and teach us all

there. We did this in my front room so I didn’t even have to leave our house. “My mum Gladys worked in the Samuel Osbourn Steel Works from the start of the war, and when I was 14 I went to work there too. I left school and there was no messing about. I went straight into a job. When I started the main thing I remember was how hot it was in there. “I was in the offices doing invoices, but it was nice when I had to go down and see people in the

different sections in the steel works and I could sometimes go and say hello to my mum. But she often did night shifts because the works were open 24 hours a day. So my aunt came to live with us and help to look after my younger brother and me. “In many ways they were good times. I liked working with all the women. We’re just the same as men really. You get used to the life that you’re living.

“My mum lived to be 101 year old, but has passed away now, and I have great grandchildren who want to hear about what we did during the war. It’s important to remember these stories. I sometimes think I should write a book!” Barbara is looking forward to receiving her medallion, and Gladys’ at next week’s ceremony and mostly to the unveiling of the statue, creating a lasting legacy of the hard work and determination of the Women of Steel. The people of Sheffield are invited to celebrate this momentous occasion on Friday 17 June 2016, 11:30 am at Barker’s Pool .

A man walks up to a woman and asks, “Would you sleep with me for £1,000,000?” She quickly replies, “Yes.” So then he asks, “Would you sleep with me for £20?” Astounded by the question she says, “Of course not. What kind of woman do you think I am?” He says, “Well we’ve already determined that. Now I’m just working on the price.”

Late one night a drunk guy is showing some friends around his brand-new apartment. The last stop is the bedroom, where a big brass gong sits next to the bed. “What’s that gong for?” the friend asks him. “It’s not a gong,” the drunk replies. “It’s actually a talking clock.” “You’re crazy. Show me how it works then!” The guy picks up a hammer, gives the gong an ear-shattering pound, and steps back. Suddenly, someone on the other side of the wall screams, “For God’s sake…it’s 3:30 in the goddamn morning!”

Everybody on Earth dies and goes to heaven. God greets them and says, “Men, make two lines: one for those who dominated their women and one for those who were whipped. All the women can go with St. Peter.” After about an hour, God returns to find 2.5 billion men standing in the whipped line and only one guy in the dominant line. “You men should be ashamed of yourselves!” God cries. “I created you in my image, and all of you cowed down to women? Can any of you explain this?” No one dares says a word. God then turns to the man standing alone and says, “Tell me, my son, how did you manage to be the only one on this line?” “I don’t know,” the guy replies, shrugging. “My wife told me to stand here.”

FINE INCREASE ‘WON’T DETER MOBILE PHONE DRIVERS’ Proposals to hit those who illegally use a mobile phone while driving - an increasing issue - with harsher penalties will not stop people offending, most of the motorists surveyed by the RAC believe. The motoring organisation says while its research shows strong support for clamping down on offenders, many drivers view a “lack of enforcement” as the main problem. A view that is somewhat supported by statistics to show the number of roads policing officers is decreasing in the majority of British counties. The results of a Government consultation on increasing the number of penalty points handed to non-HGV drivers from three to four and raising fines to £150 from £100 are set to be published soon. But the RAC says while 52% of the 2,100 drivers it polled think offenders should face tougher penalties, 69% do not believe the move would work. Three-quarters (76%) of the drivers surveyed think using a handheld phone while driving puts lives in danger with nearly as many (68%) saying they wish there were more police officers patrolling the roads to enforce the law.

Find out how much your car is worth with the free car valuation tool at RAC Cars. Get a free car valuation RAC spokesman Simon Williams says: “There is a very strong feeling from law-abiding motorists that something needs to be done to make drivers stop using their phones while driving. “But while people want the penalties for committing this offence to be beefed up there is also an acceptance that nothing is likely to change due primarily to a lack of enforcement. “From 2010 to 2015 England and Wales experienced a 27% decline in the number of roads police officers. The number of fixed penalty notices issued for using a handheld phone while driving reduced dramatically from a high of 125,500 in 2009 to 52,400 in 2012. “In line with this, our own research has found that motorists believe there is little chance of being caught by a police officer (as opposed to a camera) for a driving offence.” Mr Williams adds: “Changing this behaviour will only come through a combination of actions. We need more rigorous enforcement of the law, increased penalties that act as a meaningful deterrent and a high profile advertising campaign that makes motorists fully aware of the serious consequences of using a handheld phone at the wheel of a vehicle.” Among those calling for a greater deterrent, 11% advocate a driving ban. Of those supporting a hike in fines, over a third think offenders should pay £450 or more with one in seven (14%) of the motorists backing a penalty points increase saying driving licences should be endorsed with seven or more.

WIN A PAIR OF WEEKEND TICKETS TO TRAMLINES When Tramlines Festival returns for its eighth edition from 22 – 24 July, taking over a plethora of venues and outdoors stages across Sheffield, it will fly the flag once again as the UK’s largest innercity music festival. But how does it attract a whopping 100,000 music-lovers every year? In short, the answer is more than just great music…

1. It turns a city into a festival. Impressive, huh? Tramlines takes the reins on four outdoor stages and 15 venues across the city-centre and beyond, creating one enormously lively festival. The fringe activity is countless, though, with music pouring from all types of venues; even the butchers, bakers, and, erm, candlestick-makers put on a party. Tramlines spans alternative warehouse spaces such as Hope Works, the stunning Cathedral, independent music venues including the Leadmill and The Harley, as well the city’s parks, with the beautiful forest glade in Endcliffe Park home to the Tramlines Folk Forest Stage. 2. It’s got an inner-city location with greenfield vibes. Catching international headline acts alongside breaking talent at the newly increased 17,500-capacity Main

Stage on Ponderosa Park offers up guaranteed greenfield festival vibes. If it weren’t for the rising tower blocks surrounding the park, you could easily forget you were in the centre of the city.

3. There’s no mud and no camping. Admittedly, the two largest stages the Main Stage and the Devonshire Green Stage - are both on city parks so, technically, mud can get underfoot. However, Sheffield’s concrete jungle makes up the majority of the vast festival site, so there’s not an ankle-deep mud trench in sight. And if the thought alone of camping for three days leaves you aching for a shower, Tramlines is the ideal festival; stay in one of the city’s many hotels or book an Airbnb and return fresh as a daisy each day. 4. There’s something to discover around every corner. Weird and wonderful street theatre fills Barkers Pool, while the Peace Gardens offers up break-dancing battles and spray-can art. There’s also a brand new hand-picked film programme at Showroom Cinema this year featuring ‘Suede: Night Thoughts’ followed by a Q&A with the band among the highlights. There are even arts and craft for the kids in

(free) family friendly areas like Weston Park.

5. You can party all day and all night. From 6pm on Friday 22 July until 4am on Monday 25 July, consider the party in full swing. Start with the outdoor stages and bands by day, and then move onto the clubs, warehouses and after-parties at night for a banging electronic programme. And probably book Monday off work... 6. It’s one of the best value festival tickets around. A full weekend ticket costs just £42 + bf. You only have to look at the talent on offer to know that this is a reyt good deal. 7. Expect proper musical diversity. R&B to psych-rock, reggae to grime, techno to folk and hip-hop to afrobeat… Variety is the spice of life, after all. The 2016 lineup includes Jurassic 5, Kelis, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, Marika Hackman, Mystery Jets, Dawn Penn, Crazy P Soundsystem, Moon Duo, David Rodigan, The Dandy Warhols, Public Service Broadcasting, Steve Davis (DJ), All We Are, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Mica Levi (DJ), Dizzee Rascal, Gwenno, Gaz Coombes, Little Simz, Norman Jay MBE, Goldie, Toddla T, Paranoid

London Live, Randall, Big Narstie, Floorplan and Footsie on a bill of over 250 artists. 8. There’s an enormous bill of breaking talent. Tramlines has a long history of showcasing breaking acts before they hit the big time. Blossoms, Toddla T, The XX, George Ezra, Charli XCX, alt-J and Nao are just a few of the artists who’ve gone on from early shows at the festival to bag chart-topping singles and sell-out

shows. With over half of the lineup made up of emerging artists, it’s the perfect place to discover your new favourite act, with this year’s tips including reggae upstart Kiko Bun, highly acclaimed UK rapper Little Simz, fast rising Sheffield MC Coco, Welsh language alt-rock from Gwenno and garage-pop from Inheaven.

9. It does good food. It might sound like a simple thing to achieve, but the reality is we’ve all eaten

a festival burger that tastes like a flip-flop. Highlights at Tramlines include the gooey Twisted Burger Company; Proove Pizza’s woodfired Napolitan pizzas; Jamaican jerk chicken and curried mutton from Caribbean Fusion; and this summer’s healthy treat, Fro by Jo, coconut-based frozen yoghurt with superfood toppings. To check out the full lineup for Tramlines 2016, visit www. tramlines.org.uk

READER COMPETITION The lovely people over at Tramlines have kindly given us a pair of full weekend tickets for Tramlines to give away to a lucky reader. All you have to do is answer the following question and send your entry with your name and a daytime contact telephone number to either info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk or Mercury Newspaper, 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before Noon on Friday 24th June. Where is the main stage for this year’s Tramlines festival situated? A) Devonshire Green B) Ponderosa Park C) Don Valley Bowl Competition closes Noon on 24/6/16 Winners drawn at random.

are on the up for Rival Sons. Megadeth opened the tea time slot with the classic Hanger 18 being ripped out of Dave Mustaine’s blue flying V, Sweating Bullets went down a storm, and we also had tunes from the new album Dystopia, Post American World being just one. Nikki Sixx also joined the gang for the Sex Pistols hit Anarchy In The UK. Skindred are become favourites of mine so it was a quick hop over to the Second Stage where they Words by Roy Goodall almost secured main billing. Maybe next time. CASTING one’s mind back to last year’s festival Sadly the rain came again, but that didn’t dampen the crowd as they hit us with Under Attack, Nobody and double-checking the figures, 123 bands and Warning. The wonder boys from Wales really graced the hallowed ground making it one of are good, though I was surprised that front man the biggest festivals on planet earth. As most Benji Webbe had the Union Jack around his mike years I moan about what I’ve missed as for me stand instead of a Welsh one. Still, along with that’s too many. Maybe someone’s listened or bassist Dan Pugsley, guitarist Mikey Demus and it’s cost-cutting but Download 2016 only had 112 offerings, though I’m guessing the camp site sticksman Arya Goggins Skindred did more than good and I for one recommend them. produced several more surprises. Back on the Lemmy Main Stage Deftones had a Anyway, talking of surprises, it rained! Oh yes, tough job as the rain hampered their show but they did it, as Friday afternoon became a washout with bands like Counting Days, Killswitch Engage, carried on regardless with a few smiles piercing the Glassjaw, The Wildhearts, and main stage headliners downpour. Rammstein having to battle on regardless. Mind Black Sabbath needed no introduction as they have you, at least they got some shelter, spare a thought cemented their place in rock history with tunes like for the poor punters and hard-working behind the Fairies Wear Boots, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, plus a scenes people who diligently put on this festival few unfamiliar ones to me at any rate, namely After year after year and had to suffer the conditions. and Forever. I wasn’t keen on the lengthy drum Saturday was better, for a while, though wellington solo, no mater how good he was, and the rain and boots helped the under foot mud, of which there mud really didn’t help was plenty. Still, Danko Jones a threesome from matters. But hey, this is England after all and we over the pond hit the Maverick Stage running with have to keep smiling. lots of tunes, smiles and general good nature. Try Even though you still miss more bands than you can as I might, getting in to see foursome Milk Teeth on literally see and sadly Sunday eluded me, Download The Dogtooth Stage was a squeeze so we listened 2016 still remains at the top off its game and looks outside. Thankfully we had better luck on the The set to stay that way for many years to come. Lemmy Main Stage with Sixx:A.M the post Motley Crue offering from Nikki Sixx. Complete with fishnets and attitude this lot went down well with front man James Michael more than proving he had a voice to be reckoned with. On the same stage Rival Sons offered something of a surprise with their seventies subtle sounds and solid playing. With less shouting and more feeling this Long Beach Californian bunch did well with songs from their back catalogue plus a selection off new longplayer Hollow Bones. Along with a support slot on Black Sabbath’s on going tour things

TERRORVISION COME TO HOLMFIRTH Words by Roy Goodall HOLMFIRTH PICTUREDROME 28th May 2016

SUSTAINABILITY is the buzz word for this generation and if you’ve a brain and feature in a rock band, you really have to take it on board. Financially crippling’s the best way to describe life in a band, which is a shame as some great acts have come and gone because of that old thing called money. Bradford boys Terrorvision are a different breed. They may have had more success several years ago but to keep things sustainable, (that word again) then you need day jobs too which they have, and when they’ve time they bring out the band to the masses and boy, can Terrorvision cut the mustard. Opening band Tropical Contact, a five-some from Holmfirth really set the bar high as they knocked out decent tunes from their album XS with grace and passion. Comprising Charlie Batten drums, Ed Dickinson

guitar, Ben Janet vocals, Rob Taylor bass and Joe Gallagher on guitar vocals they all looked like they were having fun on the big stage, a huge difference from all the countless pubs they must play. A gang to watch out for me thinks. With the traditional backdrop and simple set-up, Terrorvision hit the stage running and to be honest never stopped for the entire twenty two song set. Looking remarkably fit, happy and full of life, a thing that certain rock bands fail to display, Bradford’s finest gave their all. Opening with Enteralterego, unfamiliar to me, and Pretend Best Friend which I love, you couldn’t fail to notice they absolutely loved what they were doing, as did the sold out Holmfirth crowd. How frontman and vocalist Tony Wright kept going is beyond me as he’s constantly on the move. You try singing and running around. It’s hard work, yet he made it look effortless. It was joyful to hear stuff off the last album Super Delux out back in 2011, namely Demolition Song and Babylon, between which we had sandwiched Josephine, Discotheque Wreck and D’Ya Wanna Go Faster, all played with skill by bassist Leigh Marklew and Mark Yates on the guitar. The man at the back Cam Greenwood held things together with expert hands as he too never missed a beat. My House and Alice What’s The Matter gradually led us into the encore and with the crowd still eager for more we ended with Tequila and Oblivion. With Tony’s northern drawl bidding us good night I for one felt we’d seen one hell of a show. In fact, I’d go further, for me it was not only the best I’d seen this decade, but possibly this century.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

This week, I am mortified. I have committed an unforgivable faux pas, worse than knocking off a personal best with someone else’s net, worse than catching a stillwater barbel, and worse than commenting on social media that someone has neglected to use an unhooking mat; I have broken another anglers tackle… It was an accident of course, but it doesn’t stop me feeling incredibly guilty. Whilst minding my own business, watching my three rods do, well, nothing, a pole angler approached me with his ‘top two’ firmly locked together, and asked if I could help. I don’t own a pole, I tried it once and suffered backache for days afterwards, so I’m not well versed in such problems. We tried gently pulling the two sections apart whilst tapping the middle, then came the fateful moment when it was decided that we should try and twist the jammed sections apart. We each had a hand on both sections, and as I started to put pressure on the two pieces of carbon, using less force than I would to twist the two sides of an Oreo cookie apart to lick the cream within, there was an awful moment, a fraction of a second, when that pressure was too much, and the pole section shattered… As we held the splintered ends, I heard myself gasp “oh no”, before my mind instantaneously thought “how much?” and I slowly met the eyes of the other angler… A silent pause. I let go of the pole section, he held it to his eye level. ‘Bugger… I was worried that would happen.” What could I say? I apologised profusely, and was prepared to offer compensation for the damage, but graciously (and I mean graciously) he immediately informed me that he had a spare replacement section which removed the need for me to proffer payment. I hadn’t got anywhere near the amount of money which would have been required in my wallet, and his admission removed the need to awkwardly swap details so I could reimburse him later, but I still felt terribly guilty… I recounted the episode to my wife, and she asked what the etiquette was in such a situation. In truth, I don’t know. If it was me, I’d probably consider

that to ask another angler for assistance is to accept responsibility if something goes wrong, (unless a deliberate act) but what would you do in that situation? In the end, I left my details with the fishery owner who was doing his rounds, and asked him to pass them onto to the angler concerned, but as yet, he hasn’t been in touch If he does, I’ll gladly pay up as it may assuage my guilt somewhat, but it’s the last time I ever attempt to part two jammed pole sections for someone else! Needless to say, I couldn’t get away fast enough (I was on the verge of packing up) and looked forward to a session later in the week. A quick text to seek permission, and I eventually found myself wandering the towpath alongside a gorgeous stretch of canal which is run as members section, under the management of Julian Grattidge (contact Julian via Facebook NWC Angling Club) and a joy to fish. The club run just over a mile of canal, a section which includes various turning circles, wides, bridges and lots more, and is home to hefty pike, perch, bream, roach and even carp, but it was predators I was after. Armed with a light lure rod for perch, and a heavier Sonik Sk4 for pike action, it was an absolute pleasure to wander beneath the trees which offer shade, and respite from the blistering sunshine. I managed to winkle out a couple of small pike, and added a few micro perch before returning to the van and setting out for an hour elsewhere. An hour was all I had, so I dropped into a ‘banker’ swim and began to flick rubber about hoping to entice a bite or two. Conditions were appalling, with bright sunshine, very little breeze, and a class of schoolchildren flailing around in canoes, taking it in turns to fall out, and shout a lot as they splashed around trying to get back in! Grrr! I managed two more micro perch, then snagged the bottom. Then the bottom moved…. Somewhat confused, a second thump on the rod tip confirmed I had indeed hooked something, and it felt fairly big; too big to be a perch surely? After a few minutes, I’d gained an audience, and was carefully playing the fish towards me on 5lb fluoro carbon and a tiny jig head. A flash in the depths looked golden tinged with red, and I realised I was playing the biggest perch I’d seen for a long time! A few awestruck “oohs” and “ahhs” told me the watching crowd were also impressed, so I tried to get the fish onto the surface. I tried too hard… A resounding ‘thwack’ saw the line part, and the rod tip flick skywards; I’d lost it! I couldn’t believe it as I watched the perch slowly submerge, and stood crestfallen as the watchers drifted away. “Unlucky mate”, a hand on my shoulder, and that was it. I checked the line to see that my knot had failed… my knots never fail, ever. This was the first time in years I messed a knot up, and it had really let me down badly. I was deeply disappointed, and can only put it down to karma… I saw the look the pole angler gave me as he trudged back to his swim, dragging his broken pole, so I can only gather that his spluttered hex worked… Gutted.

of the club and the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme. The team’s community support kicked off in July 2015 with the club’s annual family fun day Owls in the Park where fans were given the opportunity to meet all their favourite players, get autographs and pose for photos. This year’s event takes place on Sunday 17 July where yet again fans will get to meet all the new summer signings and take part in a raft of activities and enjoy entertainment. further two years. Complications were arisen following the sacking of Nigel Adkins, and the hiring of Chris Wilder, as a different contract was offered by Wilder and his staff. Nevertheless, the 22-year-old stopper will now presumably be Wilder’s number one goalkeeper for the upcoming season. Following the release of Mark Howard, it is expected that Wilder will add to his goalkeeping ranks, to add to youngsters such as Jake Eastwood and Aaron Ramsdale. Long made 38 starts for the Blades last season, after taking the number one spot from Mark Howard before Christmas. His performances became more assured as the season progressed, a two-year-deal ensures that if his performances improve yet again, the club is not out of pocket should a club in a higher division come calling. Long may be holding out for a move to a higher division, given his age and nationality he

Fernando Forestieri and captain Glenn Loovens battle it out in a charity bake off that saw them scoop the title with their Owls themed cake. The duo saw off competition from Sheffield United, Rotherham and Barnsley to be crowned winners and help raise more than £180 for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. Ahead of Christmas, the whole team conducted a day of visits to four different organisations to help spread some festive spirit. The Owls, who were also joined by head coach Carlos Carvalhal and Chairman Dejphon Chansiri, visited the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Weston Park, Cash for Kids and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice to make it a truly unforgettable day for hundreds of children and young people across Sheffield. Working in conjunction with the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, the players have also been involved in a number of projects, initiatives and programmes including the Premier League 4 Sport, Soccer Camps and the NCS project.

would be attractive to a Premier League club. However, after Harry Maguire’s career stalled following a move to Hull City, a move up the divisions does not always mean that a footballer’s career develops in a positive way. The news of Long’s deal was followed by an announcement from the English Football League that 16 category one Premier League academy sides have been added to the new look EFL Trophy. The changes have had mixed reactions from fans, with many not looking forward to welcoming an under21 side to Bramall Lane next season.

John Marquis has said that he cannot wait to start “a new challenge” after completing his move to Doncaster Rovers. The striker becomes Rovers’ seventh signing of a busy transfer window for manager Darren Ferguson. “I’m very happy to have it all sorted now. I’m looking forward to the season ahead, getting back in and getting

THE SHAKEY

Rotherham United manager Alan Stubbs says he is happy to bide his time in his recruitment as he sets his sights on strengthening on his squad ahead of the 2016/17 season. The newly-appointed Millers boss admits he will be

prepared to wait for the right man in the summer transfer market and believes the abolishing of the Emergency Loan window will mean the club will have to be calculated in their approach to signings ahead of the new season. “I think that’s why it’s important not to rush in early on because none of the clubs in terms of the loans will be deciding that now as we speak,” Stubbs told www. themillers.co.uk. “We’re probably looking at that picture becoming clearer over the next six or seven weeks, rather than the next one or two.

“That’s why we need to be careful about rushing into getting players now, when potentially there could be a better option further down the line.” Stubbs has been in the AESSEAL New York Stadium hotseat for little over a week now and concedes that he understands the magnitude of the task that lies ahead but is looking forward to the challenge of the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship campaign. “It’s been busy and it hasn’t surprised me because we’ve obviously got a lot of work to do, but for me it’s exciting and I’m really looking forward to seeing the players on the first day when they are back in on the 30th,” he continued. “Maybe by then we might have a few new faces joining them on the first day but we’ve said all along that we want to bring quality and not necessarily quantity to the club and if that means us waiting a little bit longer to get the right man then we’re prepared to do that.”

in with the lads and starting a new challenge,” said the twenty-four year old. “The manager got in contact with my agent; I came up and met him. I came in and he put on a good presentation, I was really impressed by it and how he wants to take the club forward, how I can help, what I can bring to the team and how the team can help me improve. I was taken by how he presented the club and that’s why I came here. “We share the same ambitions; we’re looking to get promoted this season – that’s something I’m looking to achieve here and the way that he wants

to play. The good and the bad bits about me we agreed on and (this move is about) heading in the right direction for me and my career.” Marquis’ experience on loan at Northampton from Millwall was one of numerous spells away from the New Den and will act as motivation for his permanent move to South Yorkshire. “I’ve been here, there and everywhere on loan, not really – in my opinion – been given a fair chance at Millwall so that’s why I’ve been to other places and now I’m a long way from home (London) but its something that I wanted to do; a new chapter and a fresh start,” he said. “All I can do is look forward to hopefully some successful times here. “I’ve been to the training ground this morning and I’ve played at the stadium before, it’s a lovely ground to play at week in week out. I’m looking forward to it and want to crack on and get started.”
