SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE PRESENTS THE BRITISH BOULDERING CHAMPIONSHIP 2016 Registration opened this week for the much anticipated British Bouldering Championships (BBC) on the 9 and 10 July. Returning to Sheffield for the tenth time, this year 120 contestants will fight for first place from a new city centre location and the whole event will be free to spectators. As the headline event of the Cliffhanger outdoor festival, the BBC competition is managed by the British Mountaineering Council and entries for registration can be made through www.thebmc. co.uk/bbc
Sheffield has a community of over 10,000 climbers and a growing reputation as The Outdoor City, where its unique proposition is the proximity between outdoor adventure, rural escapes and big city life. Moving the competition to Devonshire Green in Sheffield city centre is a much anticipated development and is set to showcase the homegrown talent and sporting excellence of the city on the global stage whilst reinforcing Sheffield as a destination for outdoor adventure events. The 25 metre wide by four
metre high competition wall will stand proud on Devonshire Green in the centre of Sheffield. It is predicted that the new location will double the number of festival goers enjoying Cliffhanger and the headline British Bouldering Championship event alone is expected to draw crowds of more than 6000 over the two days . People overseas or elsewhere in the UK who can’t make it to The Outdoor City that weekend on 9 and 10 July can watch the British Bouldering Championship as the action unfolds through the BMC live
stream www.thebmc. co.uk/bbc This year’s competition will run until later in the evening on both nights to take advantage of the warmer weather. Accompanied by live music on Friday and

ALBERT SNODGRASS
Can a kangaroo jump higher than a house? Of course, a house doesn’t jump at all. A man asks a farmer near a field, “Sorry sir, would you mind if I crossed your field instead of going around it? You see, I have to catch the 4:23 train.” The farmer says, “Sure, go right ahead. And if my bull sees you, you’ll even catch the 4:11 one.” A man walks into a bar and says, “Give me a beer before the problems start!” He drinks the beer and then orders another saying, “Give me a beer before the problems start!” The bartender looks confused. This goes on for a while, and after the fifth beer the bartender is totally confused and asks the man “When are you going to pay for these beers?” The man answers, “Now the problems start!” My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he’s 97 years old and we have no idea where the hell he is. Bob left work one Friday evening. But it was payday, so instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend partying with his mates and spending his entire wages. When he finally appeared at home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his angry wife and was barraged for nearly two hours with a tirade befitting his actions. Finally his wife stopped the nagging and said to him, “How would you like it if you didn’t see me for two or three days?” He replied, “That would be fine with me.” Monday went by and he didn’t see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. But on Thursday, the swelling went down just enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye. The teacher said to his class one day, “Please stand up, anyone who thinks they’re stupid.” Nobody stood up so the teacher said, “I’m sure there are some stupid students in this class!” At this point Little Johnny stood up. The teacher said, “Oh Johnny! So you think you’re stupid then?” Little Johnny replied, “No, I just felt bad that you were standing up on your own.”

CALLS FOR DRIVERS TO BOOST SAFETY BY INSTALLING DASH CAMS IN THEIR CARS Motorists are being urged to install dash cams in their cars to help make the roads safer. The call comes from a newly elected police and crime commissioner, who says having more vehicles equipped with on-board cameras would help to deter dangerous drivers and save lives. And Arfon Jones, the police and crime commissioner for North Wales Police, says footage from the dashboard-mounted devices can also help officers secure more convictions. Cyclists can play their part too, adds the former police inspector, by using cameras mounted on their helmets. Mr Jones, who was elected in May, says he would like to see the technology being used by more motorists and cyclists. He adds that the cameras, which can also
be mounted on to windscreens, can capture evidence of dangerous and anti-social driving, as well as near misses. The footage they capture he says, can provide the “best evidence” when offences have been committed. Mr Jones’ call for more motorists to use the cameras is being backed by the officer in charge of the force’s roads policing unit, the Daily Post has reported. Chief Inspector Darren Wareing says dash cams can help officers to tackle a range of motoring offences. These include speeding, dangerous and careless driving, the illegal use of handheld mobile phones by drivers and failing to use a seatbelt. The cameras, he adds, are becoming increasingly affordable and can capture high-definition footage of motorists driving dangerously. In April, North Wales Police issued dash cam footage of a fatal accident as a warning to other motorists. A court had heard that the accident happened on the A55 as the lorry driver it jailed for causing death by dangerous driving was “fiddling” with his sat-nav. And last month Warwickshire Police released dash cam footage of a lorry crashing into the back of four other vehicles that had slowed down in traffic the A46 near Stratford-uponAvon. The force said it had issued the film to raise awareness among motorists of the importance of paying attention while driving.

MISS DONCASTER SUPPORTS CANCER CHARITY AT RUN IN THE PARK The current Miss Doncaster is preparing for a 10k run this July to help raise awareness and funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity. Charlie Lister (28) from Edenthorpe, Doncaster will stride out alongside hundreds of runners on the 10th July as part of Weston Park Cancer Charity’s annual Run in the Park event at Graves Park, Sheffield. Weston Park Cancer Charity is the dedicated charity for Weston Park Hospital and needs to raise over £2 million this year to help improve the lives of over 18,000 people fighting cancer across the region. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. After seeing many of her family members fight cancer, including her dad, Phil, Charlie has vowed to complete the popular race in support of thousands of people fighting cancer and in memory of her late granny and granddad. “Cancer has had a huge impact on my life from an early age. “ Said Charlie. “When I was just 2
years old my dad was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and although I can’t remember it, he says he always used to put a baseball cap on when I visited him during treatment so I didn’t notice he’d lost his hair.” “Since my dad’s diagnosis, both my granny and granddad have been diagnosed with cancer and sadly weren’t as fortunate. My Granny, Pauline succumbed to lung cancer after a 10 year battle and my granddad passed away 2 years ago after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.” “I’m new to running but watching your family go through such devastating times is truly awful and anything I can do to support our local cancer hospital is a no brainer!” “Patients and their families in our region rely on the work of Weston Park Hospital, not just for life-saving cancer treatments, but also for ongoing support during and after a cancer diagnosis.” Run in the Park welcomes families, friends and colleagues to don their running vests in support of the cancer charity and is well attended by hospital staff, fundraisers and patients alike. Now into its eighth year, the
cancer charity is encouraging participants of all ages and abilities to take on either the 3k fun run or 10k race as part of the event. Since 2008, over £300,000 has been raised through Run in the Park which has enabled the funding of pioneering projects within Weston Park Hospital, including cutting- edge research, advanced treatment options and support services. Charity Senior Fundraising Manager, Helen Gentle said “We are delighted that Charlie will be joining us at this year’s Run in the Park and stepping out for cancer patients in our region.” “Charlie’s experience of cancer is sadly all too common and the more people that can support the work of Weston Park Cancer Charity at this event, the more families we can hope to keep together for longer across the region.” “Weston Park Hospital is home to the only radiotherapy department in South Yorkshire, meaning that cancer patients from Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley and Chesterfield are required to attend for treatment.” “We’d like to encourage runners of all abilities and ages to join

Charlie on the day and help us make a real difference to cancer services now and in the future.” Charlie, who was awarded the Miss Doncaster title last year, now has her sights set on America and is competing in the Royal UK Miss this July where winners will go on to compete in the USA. She continued, “I just really want to do South Yorkshire proud and supporting local charities is a really important part of my work.”

THE FOREST ENJOYS REVAMP INCLUDING EYE CATCHING MURAL Renowned graffiti artist Trick o’ 9 has helped The Forest owners Marian and Ollie with a revamp of this Rutland Road hostelry. The couple, who also own the Toolmakers brewery, were delighted when the artist painted a mural on part of the pub’s exterior. The whole exterior has been redecorated and a new pub sign
made, while inside the stage has been relocated to a more prominent position so performers such as Gary Phillps can literally be seen by a wider audience. Marian and Ollie have also redecorated part of the interior so why not visit soon to admire the artwork, revamp, great entertainment and excellent real ales.

The trio from Sydney, Australia, are a to indie immortality. Also on the NME stage are throw-back to the Britpop era who, in the midst indie rockers Blossoms. The most exciting band of 90s nostalgia, could be one of this year’s in British music release their self-titled debut festival highlights.
WIN TICKETS TO THIS YEAR’S HUGE LEEDS FESTIVAL Words by John Webster
Anyone attending the Leeds Festival at Bramham Park this year has every right to be a little over-excited. It’s the 18th year of the world-famous event, which will deliver over 200 acts across the August Bank Holiday Weekend. With seven stages, the festival has got every base covered, providing a genre-diverse line up with everything from heavy metal and indie, to punk and electronica. And this year, for the first time, there will be five incredible headliners, making it bigger and better than ever. Here’s a pick of just some of the talent coming to Leeds over the three days: FRIDAY 26th – Chicago pop-punk rockers Fall Out Boy will cross the pond, armed with classics from their emo days and some killer songs from their ‘American Beauty/American Psycho’ album, to co-headline the first night with Biffy Clyro. It’s the 10th appearance at Leeds for Biffy and their second headline slot. As far as live rock bands go, there aren’t many as ferocious as the Scottish trio, who will be aiming to scorch the Earth with an explosive set. Also on the main stage, from New York City, is rap sensation A$AP Rocky. The charismatic rapper has enjoyed incredible success in recent years and will bring his eclectic hip hop style to the proceedings. Topping the bill on the NME/BBC Radio 1 stage is the increasingly popular, alternative rock band The 1975. The four-piece have just released their second album and are known for their lively stage performances. When it comes to talented, upcoming, British musicians, not many are held in as high regard as Rat Boy.
SATURDAY 27th - The genre-transcending Foals stole the show last year, playing a storming ‘surprise’ set in the NME tent. The Oxford five-piece have become one of the most unmissable live acts in the world and return to Bramham Park to co-headline with dance phenomenon Disclosure. It’s the first Major UK festival headlining set for the Disclosure brothers, who have been taking the world by storm with their intoxicating electro sound. In 2014 they had the Leeds festival bouncing and will be looking to send the crowd into a frenzy once again. One of the most captivating frontmen in music is Frank Carter and he returns with his new hardcore punk band Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes. Expect breakneck guitars and vicious drums in what will be a high energy, uncompromising set. Twenty One Pilots have pushed all kinds of musical limits with their mesmerising ‘Blurryface’ album. The alternative hip hop duo from Ohio will be in the NME tent and promise to deliver one of the most unique performances of the weekend. On the Festival Republic stage are Sheffield indie band The Sherlocks, who are gaining a strong reputation and a loyal following. If last year’s set is anything to go by, expect another raw, energetic performance. Once again the BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage will be the platform for some of the most talented and in-demand DJs on the planet. Oliver Heldens who, thanks to hits like ‘Gecko (Overdrive)’, is amongst the elite, tops the bill on Saturday night. SUNDAY 28th – Headlining the last night are Red Hot Chili Peppers; one of the best-selling bands of all time with over 80 million records sold worldwide. Classic songs from albums like ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magic’ and ‘Californication’ along with material from their new album
album in August, and have already impressed at festivals including SXSW and T in the Park. Hailing from Stockport, this extremely talented bunch of young musicians seem destined for greatness – theirs is a performance not to be missed. For lovers of heavy metal, the Grammy Award-nominated Mastodon will be thrashing out their best at The Pit stage. Whilst deep house DJ Duke Dumont tops the line-up in the Dance tent. It seems then, that once again the Leeds Festival will be among the most anticipated days on the music calendar. And come rain or shine (most probably rain) festival goers are in for yet another incredible weekend at Bramham Park.

Park lakes…love ‘em or hate ‘em, there are some quality fish to be had if you can put with the often ‘unusual’ natives! I’ve been on a Derby lake this week, it’s a shallow concrete bowl, thick with weed, deep with silt, and can be a bit of a headbanger. In fact, it’s only the second time I’ve fished it, the first time resulting in a resounding blank, but I’ve kept abreast of the latest captures, so returned for another go… The lake is run by an excellent club, The Earl of Harrington’s AC, who took on the lease after the local council had let this, and several other park lakes, fall into neglect. The change has been dramatic across all of the waters, with a huge amount of improvement work, restocking, planting and much more having been completed over the past couple of years, and the fish are starting to feel the benefits. I arrived bright and early, watched the water for a bit as usual, then opted to park my gear where I’d seen a couple of fish. It is weedy; shrouded in silkweed, deep in blanket weed, but it’s fishable, and a challenge, so I put some thought into my rigs, and got them in! Three rods are permissible, so I set up a short zig rig, (it is only three feet deep) and two longer monofilament hooklinks which were tethered with light leads. I’ll be honest, I’ve got absolutely no faith in zig rigs, I can’t get on with them, I fail to really grasp the mechanics, and can’t see how they are effective. I’ve tried to make them work, but a lack of fish has seen a resultant lack of confidence in the tactic, so I wasn’t really expecting much. It was cast towards showing fish, and sat there motionless… as usual! The other two rods were set up with long mono hooklinks to try and combat the deep silt, and both had new hook patterns on test from Vardis Tackle. All were baited with a variety of Mainline Baits finest, with

wafters preferred on the bottom, and I sat back to see what would happen… “Got any Rizlas mate?” A thin faced spotty youth stuck his head under the brolly. “No, I don’t smoke sorry” I replied. “Oh, got any weed then?” Thinking quickly, I pointed out that the lake was full of it, but I could tell that as he searched across the water, he just couldn’t see it… He wandered off, obviously disappointed, to sit further along the path, broke out his can of Stella, and put his feet up; it was now 8am and I’d met my first ‘character’. Park lakes can bring all sorts of meetings, from the odd to the hilarious, and after my first encounter, I next witnessed a chap dressed in bright cobalt blue lycra shorts and vest, jogging around the lake, complete with black leather shoes and socks, then I was blessed with a visit from the “you won’t catch anything in here” expert, and finally, a club bailiff who politely advised me that I was in fact fishing in an out of bounds area. Oh... I hadn’t noticed the new signs, which correctly stated that the bank I was on was reserved for a radio controlled boat club. I had checked my club book and seen no warnings, but as part of the agreement with the council, the model boaters had a long standing agreement to utilise this particular area, so I had to move, despite an absence of anything afloat, fifteen yards further up the bank… fair enough, my fault. Nonplussed, I recast and within an hour, the right hand alarm started to warble, and the rod tip pulled around. The long hook link had worked, successfully keeping the bait out of the silt, and now I was attached to something which charged across the lake, leaving a trail of silt billowing behind it! As I gained a bit of line, I noted an abundance of weed heading for my tip ring which did cause additional friction, but eventually, I got the fish near the net. The water is crystal clear, and the silt very black, which leads to very dark fish; in fact, so dark, I couldn’t even see it until it was right at the net! It slipped in, and I lifted a black common on to the mat. My first fish from the lake! It wasn’t massive, a low double, but what a fine looking specimen! The mouth of the fish was jet black, indicating that it feed confidently in the silt, the back and flanks were a dark gunmetal grey, and the underbelly tinged with cream… a real looker. Pleased, I returned the fish and reset the rod. Not thirty minutes later, a screaming take on a chod rig saw me miss it, (I’d given up on the zig) and then an hour later, I hit another screamer which became heavily weeded and unfortunately lost. I’d been told that the lake is a fairly tough nut to crack, and after a fruitless first outing I was pleased to have three takes, connect with two, and land one, all in the space of a few hours. It bodes well for next time, and if I take some Rizlas, no doubt I’ll have some company too… I can’t wait, and if you have a park lake near you, give it a go!

STUBBS STEPS UP RECRUITMENT DRIVE Rotherham United manager Alan Stubbs has confirmed he his shortening his list of targets as he looks to make his move in the transfer market. Stubbs has indentified a number of potential recruits as he looks to accelerate his close season recruitment drive on the eve of the release of next season’s Sky Bet Championship fixtures. The Millers boss admitted that he is looking right across the market as he bids to mould together a squad for one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory. Stubbs has revealed that he has had over 100 players brought to his attention as he starts to close in on some of
GAFFER IN SEVENTH HEAVEN AFTER LATEST SUMMER SIGNING Darren Ferguson has said that he expects new signing John Marquis to be a hit with supporters due to his impressive work rate. The first team manager was speaking exclusively to doncasterroversfc.co.uk following his seventh summer signing. “We’re pleased to get it done. He’s a different type of striker who’s got good experience for a 24 year old,” said Ferguson. “His work ethic means the fans will take to him straight away, he never gives defenders a minute and in terms of how I want to play, that will help. “He’s good with his back to goal; he’ll keep hold of the ball and do something in the last third. His goalscoring
his top transfer targets. “Even in this short space of time there has been potentially over 100 players that have been made known to us,” Stubbs told www.themillers. co.uk “We have made contact with a number of clubs now in terms of loan signings and permanent signings. It is a like a cat and mouse game now where we are waiting to see if there is anything in the enquiries that we have made to take the deals forward, or we move onto our other targets that have been indentified. “It can be a lengthy process. We are going through lots of players, ticking them off and narrowing the names down.” The former Bolton and Everton defender has confirmed that he is in the market for permanent and loan recruits, as he looks to make his first signing in the Millers hot-seat. With pre-season training pencilled to start on June 30th, Stubbs is now stepping up his
transfer plans after casting his eye over a number of potential targets. Stubbs confirmed that he has registered interest not only with players who are currently free agents, but he is also exploring the loan market and lining up potential bids on players at other clubs. “There will be permanent signings, loan signings and players who are currently free agents,” Stubbs affirmed. “We are looking right across the board, it won’t just been loans and free agents coming into the club, we are potentially looking at one or two players at clubs too”
record is pretty decent as well which is pretty important.” Marquis, who arrived from Millwall, has had plenty of experience on loan away from the New Den and his most recent spell (with Northampton Town) yielded six goals in 15 appearances and, with it, the League Two title. “He’s played a lot at the Championship, in League 1 and obviously last season was pivotal to helping Northampton get out of the league so it’s a really good signing,” continued Ferguson. “When I met him I liked him, his determination and the way in which he wants to kick on in his career.
“He’s had quite a few loan moves but he wants to get settled so I had a good chat with him, everything we needed to do and he was delighted to sign. “That now gives me Andy Williams, Gary McSheffrey who we’ve signed and now John and (Liam) Mandeville so I’ve got good options. “We’re possibly looking to get one in one loan – a quicker one, a striker – to give us a little more pace up there but that’s something we can concentrate on after preseason has started. “John was the one that we looked at – did a lot of research on – and he ticked a lot of boxes.”

SHEFFIELD GIRLGUIDING PARTY AT GRAVES PARK Over 400 Girlguiding members from Sheffield celebrated HRH The Queen’s birthday by attending a fun packed afternoon at Graves Park on 12 June. Participants included Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section members from all over Sheffield. They shared a picnic lunch, fed some animals and even had the chance to take a selfie with the Queen! 89th Sheffield Brownies and 102nd Sheffield Guides won the birthday cake competition which was followed by a treasure hunt. The party was organised as part of the Patron’s Lunch and marked the birthday of her Majesty the Queen who is the Patron of Girlguiding. There was even a giant birthday card for everyone to sign which will be sent to her Majesty. Each girl received a special badge to help them remember the day. Beth, aged eight, said ‘Today’s celebration of The
Queen’s 90th birthday was an inspiration to all Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section. We had great fun despite the weather! Thank you Girlguiding Sheffield for such a great day.’ Samantha Jessop, who helped organise the event, said “we’re so pleased and excited to be able to mark The Queen’s birthday. We offer girls lots of different opportunities in guiding from kayaking to camping and much more besides but to celebrate the Queen’s birthday in the way they have chosen is very special”.
