EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT EVENT FOR EX-FORCES PERSONNEL An upcoming employment event aims to raise awareness of the range of support available to exmembers of the armed forces community in Doncaster.

The event, on Thursday 30 June at Doncaster Job Centre, will advise ex-forces personnel more about what support is available and how to access it.

The event is part of the armed forces

community work undertaken by Doncaster Council in partnership with Doncaster Department for Work and Pensions and veterans charities.

The day will be divided into one-hour sessions, starting at 10.30am until 3.30pm.

Local Job Coaches will be on hand, as well as representatives from Doncaster’s Veteran Steering Group including Doncaster Department for Work and Pensions External Relations

Manager, Moira Thomasson.

Moira has recently completed the York St John’s University Veteran (military culture) Awareness and Intervention Training course, and continues to share this knowledge across Doncaster Jobcentre teams.

She said: “We are keen to raise awareness of the range of partner support that is available in Doncaster for exforces personnel who

are looking for work.’’

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones said: “I am passionate about helping our armed forces community in Doncaster, emphasised by the ongoing partnership work that we carry out to help people look for employment or training opportunities.’’

“As well as regular drop-in sessions for veterans across the borough, we also hold events like the upcoming

Armed Forces Day celebrations on Saturday 2 July, providing local people the opportunity to come out and show their appreciation for our dedicated ex-servicemen and women.”

Roads will be closed between from 8:30, with the event taking place between 11am and 3pm and people can complete the route, which takes in Ecclesall Road and the city centre, as many times as they like during that time. CITY GEARING UP FOR TRAFFIC-FREE CYCLING EVENT Mount those saddles and pedal to your hearts content. This weekend Sky Ride Sheffield brings traffic-free cycling for all the family, to Sheffield city centre.

The third and final Sky Ride Sheffield event, organised by British Cycling and Sky, will return on Sunday 3 July with a festival atmosphere and lots to do both on and off a bike – completely free of charge.

Sky Rides are mass participation, cycling events which take over the city centre so that cyclists of all ages and abilities can ride safely together on

Sheffield weekend, a festival established last year as part of the legacy of the Tour de France.

During the weekend, elite cyclists will take on the Cote de Wincobank climb, racing to the top of Jenkin Hill, a famous climb from the Tour de France route.

And, locals will also get the chance to conquer the hill, with lots of fun to be had when they reach the top.

Allez Allez Sheffield kicks off a whole month of cycling events in the city giving people plenty of opportunities to take to their saddles. Plus, The Move More challenge

runs throughout July aiming to get 50,000 people registered and active in the city. People can search for Move More Sheffield, download the app and start clocking up points on two wheels.

Since hosting its first Sky Ride event in 2014, 7,000 participants have taken part in the Sheffield event and this year Sky Ride will reach its millionth rider – will that be you?

RE-CONNECTING WITH NATURE IS KEY TO WELLBEING SAYS NEW CHARITY The close links between human health and the natural environment are at the heart of a new charity being launched next month.

Sheffield Environmental Movement (SEM) is specifically geared to improving the lives of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic people & Refugees (BAMER) across Sheffield by encouraging them to ‘go green’ and have their own environmental voice.

Migration, urbanization and socio-economic factors are three of the main reasons people from these minority groups become disconnected or severed completely from the natural environment.

The charity is being set up to provide education programmes and information to help people improve their well-being and extend the their lives by reconnecting with nature through outdoor pursuits and raising environmental awareness to encourage everything from volunteering for ‘green’ projects to

acquiring an allotment.

Everything from coarse fishing to environmental pottery is on offer.

The work is being delivered in line with the 2010 Government White Paper ‘Strengthening connections between people and nature’.

Maxwell Ayamda, managing director of Sheffield Environmental Movement, said: “Only a tiny fraction of the city’s BAMER population are currently taking advantage of the health benefits associated with being connected to the natural environment.

“The environmental movement remains almost exclusively ‘white’ at the present time despite all past initiatives and projects – we’re aiming to change that with SEM. We want to encourage constructive dialogue with existing environmental groups.

“Our charity is all about giving people the practical skills to ‘re-connect’. We want to provide interventions that will help people become more empowered and lead to them independently accessing and participating in the natural environment for recreation/ leisure and also contributing to environmental heritage and citizenship.”

INNER-CITY SUMMER FUN AT ST MARY’S After the success of their first ever Village fete last summer, St Mary’s have a much bigger and better event planned for this year!

Over two thousand visitors are expected to attend St Mary’s Summer Fete on Saturday 2nd July.

This annual urban event is a fun and affordable day out for all the family, featuring an array of stalls including some of the city’s finest crafts people and vintage collectors along with a full programme of live music from local musicians and choirs. Starting the day off with Escafeld Brass Band and finishing with festival favourites – Treebeard.

There will be non-stop entertainment throughout the day including donkey rides, bouncy castle and merry-go-rounds.

There will also be a selection of traditional village fete style

fun and games, such as face painting, Morris dancers, children’s races and not forgetting the now infamous tug of war of war competition. Guests will be able to meet a host of small animals at the mobile petting zoo and have the opportunity to feed the friendly Alpacas.

Hot and cold food will be available all day from the Community Café, as well as a dedicated cream tea tent, pimms & beer tent, BBQ, Strawberries & Cream and Ice Cream.

With a very reasonable entry price of £1 Adults, 50p for children and under 3’s FREE, this is set to be an exciting and inclusive community event for all ages.

REDS V BLUES THIS WEEKEND! Following on from the huge successes over the past number of years, Reds v Blues returns this weekend!

The match, involving fans, celebrities and exprofessionals will be staged on Saturday 2 July (3pm) at the Jubilee Sports and Social Club, in aid of Hallam FM Cash for Kids and the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme.

But there is much more to the day than just the game!

The gates open at 11.00am and there will be entertainment in the form of special performances, guest

appearances, fairground rides, football tournaments, live music, raffle prizes and much more!

In its early days, the charity event saw fans get together once a year to play against each other with the aim to raise money and awareness for Sheffield charities.

The event began to gather real pace from 2011 when over £400 was raised for the Sheffield Children’ Hospital at Hillsborough Arena.

In 2013, the match grew bigger still and incredibly raised over £3,000 for Weston Park Hospitals.

Since then, over £1,500 has been raised for St Luke’s Hospice and £1,800 for Cavendish Cancer Care and the SWFC Community Programme.

Players lined up in the Blues’ squad this time around include the likes of Matt Hamshaw, Miguel Llera and Yoann Folly.

And for the Reds, expect to see the likes of Derek Geary, Darren Bullock, David Holdsworth and cyclist Chris Pritchard.

Entry fee is a minimum £1 donation.

4CHALLENGE RIDERS RETURN TO SHEFFIELD AFTER COVERING 310 MILES FOR CANCER CHARITY A group of riders from the award- winning internet provider, ASK4 successfully completed their 2nd cycling challenge, 4Challenge, last weekend, cycling from Edinburgh to Sheffield to raise funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity.

Colleagues and friends of ASK4, a company that provides Internet solutions for student accommodation across the UK and Europe, cycled into Weston Park on Monday after a 4 day cycling challenge that saw them compete with severe weather conditions, uphill climbs and various injuries along the route.

The ride is set to raise £33,000 to fund Complementary Therapies at the Cancer Support Centre and benefit cancer patients and their families across the region.

Last year’s 4Challenge raised an incredible £40,000 to provide Digital Patient Information Systems and other equipment at Weston Park Hospital.

The brave bikers were welcomed back into Sheffield at Weston Park by pupils of Hinde House School, who helped design the cycling kit for the challenge, ride sponsors, family and friends plus charity staff and volunteers.

After a tough few days, the

riders made an emotional return to their home town.

Director of ASK4 and 4Challenge rider, Jon Thornhill said, “Once again, the 4Challenge has been an incredibly emotional rollercoaster for all involved with ups and downs throughout. We battled through the harshest of elements and overcame many individual and team challenges along the route.

“Overall, we are overwhelmed by the support we received from all those who have donated and those who showed such generosity to make this all possible.”

“We’ve so far raised over £19,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity and we’re confident that, in the next few days, this will continue to increase to benefit those fighting cancer now and into the future.”

Money raised from the ride will benefit over 18,000 patients receiving vital cancer treatment at Weston Park Hospital whose recovery is aided by having access to beneficial therapies at this dedicated centre.

The Cancer Support Centre, which relies on funding from Weston Park Cancer Charity, is located just behind Weston Park Hospital and is a dropin support centre offering a range of activities and support

services to cancer patients and their families affected by cancer.

With therapies including Auricular Acupuncture and Reiki, which help improve the side effects of some cancer treatments, the centre is an essential facility for those requiring extra support throughout and beyond their cancer diagnosis.

Charity Business Development Manager, Darren Hayes said, “We are very grateful to all the riders and supporters of the 4Challenge for once again helping to raise such an unbelievable amount for Weston Park Cancer Charity.

“The riders pushed their selves to the absolute limit to help those fighting cancer across the region and the money raised will enable patients and their families to access the valuable therapies services, funded by the charity, over the next year.”

HALF A MILLION OLDER MEN LIVING WITH LONELINESS Loneliness is a growing problem among older men, with one third of men aged over-65 living with long-term health problems, more than half a million of them are lonely, according to a new report by Age UK. The charity is warning that in the coming years, there will be many more older men living alone - increasing their risk of becoming lonely, and predict figures to rise by 65 per cent by 2030.

The study reveals that older men who live alone are more likely to be lonely than women who live alone, while they are likely to have less regular contact with family and friends adding to feelings of loneliness.

Director of Age UK, Caroline Abrahams, said: “Loneliness is a widespread problem among older men, especially for those who are unwell, bereaved or who have seen family and friends move away. As more older men live longer we need to appreciate that the numbers who are chronically lonely are likely to increase too – unless we do something about it, which we can and we must do. Loneliness is often a hidden issue, as many older men tend to be stoical and reluctant to admit how lonely they are – but facing the ups and downs of later life alone shouldn’t be ‘the new normal’ for any older person.

We all have a responsibility to take action and help the older people in our lives. A simple phone call or a visit could mean the world to someone who is feeling lonely and forgotten.”

The report highlights that the risk of developing feelings of loneliness and isolation increase with age, and among

them include: long-term health problems and disabilities.

Age UK is warning that although society is becoming increasingly aware of the risks of loneliness for older women, older man can be equally as badly affected and the number of men experiencing loneliness is rising.

The charity is calling for action to raise awareness and provide support to men who are experiencing loneliness – which is becoming a significant health challenge and part of the reason that life expectancy for men is catching up with that of women.

Nearly 90 per cent of people aged 65 and over surveyed revealed they felt that there should be more help for lonely older people and more than 25 per cent felt that a ‘once a week’ visit could help most people who feel lonely.

A further 15 per cent said they thought that attending a local club or group or getting to know their neighbours better would help people the most.

There is significant evidence to suggest that loneliness can have a serious effect on people’s health – leading to increased reliance on healthcare and social care services.

More than one million older people living in the UK are recognised as being chronically lonely, which can have implications on their mental health with research suggesting that longterm loneliness can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, in addition to increasing the risk of developing dementia, depression and high blood pressure.

The report reveals possible reasons for the growing number of lonely older people, citing families being geographically scattered due to factors such as: the changing jobs market, working families living busy lives and more people using electronic communication, stressing that older people can feel left out if they cannot join in.

Age UK is calling for measures to support and identify older men and women who are isolated and lonely. The charity is calling for the Government to recognise loneliness and isolation in later life as a serious health problem and commit to action to help combat it.

Commenting on the analysis, director of the Campaign to End Loneliness, Marcus Rand, said: “The new findings by Age UK add even more reasons to the mountain of evidence to act. Chronic Loneliness is a growing epidemic and must be tackled head on as both a public health issue and a community responsibility. Every local authority in the country should put in place a clear action plan with measurable targets for reducing loneliness in their local population.”

Charities across the country, including local branches of Age UK and organisations such as the Campaign to End Loneliness support and run initiative to support older people who feel lonely but urgently require regular funding to help them maintain the services they provide and create a network of community services to prevent loneliness among the UK’s ageing population.

ALL ROAD USERS URGED TO TAKE MORE CARE MOTORCYCLES ON THE ROADS TO SAVE INJURIES AND LIVES! WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is urging all road users to consider their behaviour and to take extra care, in an effort to reduce the number of people injured or killed and to make the roads of South Yorkshire safer for everyone.

The message from the Partnership comes in the wake of last year’s road traffic collision figures, which saw a drop in the number of people getting injured on the county’s roads but a rise in the number of people getting killed.

“Although fewer people were injured last year compared to 2014, we were very disappointed to see that the number of people who were killed actually rose,” said Joanne Wehrle, the Education Manager for the Safer Roads Partnership.

“A total of 49 people of all ages lost their lives as the result of road traffic collisions across the county – 23 more than in 2014. This is extremely sad because any fatality is one too many and they leave a trail of devastation for family and friends left behind.”

She added: “The main contributory factors to fatal road accidents are speed and not driving to the road conditions, driver behaviour (such as using a mobile phone at the wheel), not wearing a seatbelt and driving whilst being over the prescribed limit for alcohol or drugs.

“These latest figures show that no-one who uses the roads can afford to be complacent. We all have to be responsible for our behaviour, irrespective of whether we are car drivers, pedestrians or are riding motorbikes or cycles.

“The Safer Roads Partnership offers a vast range of safety courses for all ages and all road users.

Whether you are a pedestrian, a cyclist, a motorcyclist or a driver the Partnership can provide advice, training, support and information on a variety of topics. Many courses are geared to particular age groups, such as ‘Drive for Life’ for the 17 to 24 year age group, who are just about to start driving.

“However, road users, particularly car drivers and passengers, can do a lot to help and protect themselves by abiding by some key rules; drive to the conditions of the road and don’t speed, never use a mobile phone while at the wheel, don’t drive when under the influence of drink or drugs and always ensure that you and your passengers wear a seatbelt. Remember that we all have a responsibility to keep ourselves and other road users safe. Look out for other road users and respect their needs when out on the roads.”

The figures concerned the Partnership so much that in February South Yorkshire Police, in conjunction with the Safer Roads Partnership, launched Operation Illuminate as part of a determined effort

to prevent further tragedies.

Chief Supt. Rob Odell, Chair of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership Board, said: “The increase in fatalities, especially those that occurred in the final few months of last year, means that both the Partnership and South Yorkshire Police must redouble our efforts to get the messages across about safer driving habits through both education and enforcement. We are targeting those road users who, as a result of their actions, may endanger themselves and others.”

South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings, said: “Keeping our roads safe is a key priority within my Police and Crime Plan.

Whilst I am pleased that overall the number of incidents is reducing I am extremely concerned by the rising number of fatalities, especially amongst young drivers on our roads, and the impact that leaves behind on their families and friends.

“The number of cars on the road has risen dramatically over the last 30 years and whilst vehicles are undoubtedly getting safer, the number of distractions and dangers to drivers are growing.

“I strongly believe that any death or injury is one too many and I am committed to continue to work with community safety partners to continue to drive home our road safety message in a bid to further reduce the number of collisions and make South Yorkshire’s roads even safer."

MANY BRITONS DRIVING ABROAD FOR FIRST TIME ADMIT TO ZERO PREPARATION

Furthermore, one in three don’t know the rules on drink driving and almost half (48%) don’t know the rules for using car seats with children or whether children can ride upfront.

The need for greater preparation is evidenced by the fact that 22% of those who have driven in a foreign country admit they have been penalised for a traffic offence overseas. And nearly a third of those who were penalised say it was for something that they didn’t even realise was actually an offence in that country.

In addition, the research found that 13% of those who have previously driven abroad have had an accident or minor ‘prang’. A further one in five (20%) admit to driving on the wrong side of the road while in a foreign country and one in 20 (5%) even say they have missed a flight due to being confused while driving on a foreign road.

Two thirds (68%) of UK adults driving abroad this summer will be renting a car, meaning that in addition to driving under different regulations, they will also be driving a car unfamiliar to them. Yet only 56% say that they check they are familiar with the controls before driving off in a rental car.

The research forms part of a pan-European study from Enterprise Rent-A-Car of more than 4,500 drivers in the UK, Ireland, Spain, Germany and France who plan to drive abroad this summer. The research found that those in Germany who are driving abroad for the first time are most likely to prepare – just 11% say they won’t. While in Spain and Ireland, 25% and 27% respectively say they won’t prepare for their first time driving abroad.

Nearly a quarter (23%) of all UK adults driving abroad this summer will be doing so for the first time, increasing to over half (53%) for those aged under 25. Yet one in five (20%) driving abroad for the first time this summer will do zero preparation before hitting the roads, according to new research from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, part of the world’s largest car rental group, Enterprise Holdings.

When asked why they don’t prepare, a third of first time drivers (33%) said they feel there is ‘nothing to prepare for’ while around 20% believe their history as a ‘careful driver’ means they don’t need to undertake any preparation. In addition, 13% said they believe driving abroad is ‘much the same as driving at home’ while one in ten (9%) will rely solely on their sat nav for navigation during their first foreign drive.

The research uncovered widespread confusion about certain rules among these first time drivers. Forty four per cent admit they don’t know speed limits for all the types of roads in the country they plan to drive in. And relying on signs won’t be helpful for the 24% who say they don’t know if speed limits are displayed in MPH or KPH. Looking at the wider picture of all drivers who plan to drive abroad this summer, the research showed that they are almost as likely to check that they have their favourite pair of sunglasses to hand (52%) as they are to check the local driving regulations (54%).

In figures announced by the Safer Roads Partnership, 2015 saw a total of 4,401 casualties arising from 3,066 collisions on the roads in South Yorkshire – a drop of 3.4 percent.

Some 352 people were seriously injured in road accidents, which were 91 less than in 2014. Fewer people – 4,000 - were also slightly injured in 2015, compared to 4,088 in 2014.

As in previous years, car users - drivers and passengers - experienced the highest number of casualties, although these fell from 3,026 to 2,988 in 2015.

The number of car users killed or seriously injured fell to 137 but unfortunately, the number of fatal car user casualties increased to 28 in 2015, which accounted for more than half – 53 per cent – of all fatalities across the county.

Also as in previous years, car occupants were the largest casualty type at 34 per cent of all casualties, with pedestrians in second place at 29 per cent, motorcyclists at 24 per cent and pedal cycles at 11 per cent.

The number of pedestrian casualties dropped by 7.5 per cent to 570. However, the number of pedestrians getting killed increased by two to 11.

The number of casualties involving powered two wheelers – motorbikes and scooters – increased by 12 to 302 last year. The number of killed and seriously injured fell to 96 but with nine of these being fatal, seven more than in 2014.

All pedal cyclist casualties fell to 300 in 2015, along with the killed and seriously injured total falling from 57 to 44. Unfortunately, however, one pedal cyclist was killed in 2015.

There was a decrease in the number of children and young people killed or seriously injured in South Yorkshire in 2015. A total of 74, 45 of whom were pedestrians, were seriously injured – a drop of 6.2 per cent, and four were killed.

There was a 3.2 per cent drop in the number of road collisions involving personal injury to 3,066. Of these, 359 involved fatal or serious injuries - 59 less than the year before.

A total of 49 people were killed, which was 23 more than the year before (2014) and which saw each of the four districts suffering an increase. Doncaster had the highest number of fatal casualties – 19, while Sheffield suffered 15, Rotherham 12 and Barnsley three.

Over the next few weeks we will be publishing a focus on the dining and leisure venue Leopold Square in the heart of Sheffield City Centre.

The upmarket al fresco complex is home to a selection of fantastic restaurants and bars catering for both daytime and evening entertaining.

Last Saturday we were invited to dine at Wagamama to try some authentic Japanese Cuisine and upon arrival we were warmly welcomed and quickly seated in the spacious, modern restaurant.

Wagamama offers a large selection of pan-asian dishes ranging from Japanese to Thai, many of which sound tempting, which makes for difficult choosing. The varied menu with lots of options accommodating for both vegetarians and meat eaters with styles including raman, teppanyaki plus curries and

more as well as salads and their own chef’s specials.

After speaking to the friendly waitress she gave us a helpful recommendation of dishes off the menu as we were a bit unsure what to order as this was our first visit to Wagamama.

Together we chose the Teriyaki Sirloin Steak Saba and Grilled Duck Ramen for Main with Duck Wraps and Chicken Steamed Gyoza for Sides.

Before long a large bowl was served with grilled Duck Ramen, beautifully presented and with a more than genrious portion.

The tender Teriyaki Steak was cooked superbly on a bed of noodles with a vast amount of vegetables as accompaniment and both dishes consisted of many levels of flavours and textures.

The Chicken Steamed Gyoza was a first for me and was one of the waitress’ recommendations. I was more

than pleasantly surprised as this is something I wouldn’t normally pick off a menu, proving that it pays to ask for advice and try something new when visiting a restaurant with such a wide range as Wagamama. I will definitely pick these again on my return visit.

Wagamama has always been a popular dining destination, and after our first experience it is easy to see why. It serves fashionable food in a clean and modern environment, the food is honest and flavoursome whilst still being good value for money and well worth a visit.

FREE WIFI IN LIBRARIES Sheffield libraries have gone wireless with WiFi. Available in all council-run branches, and most communityrun ones, people are now able to log on for free from smartphones, tablets, laptops and more than 170 library computers.

This means easier studying, job searches, research, instant downloads from the E-library and more opportunities for people to go online.

Councillor Jack Scott, cabinet member for community services and libraries at Sheffield City Council, said: “Wi-Fi has become an essential part of everyday

life for many people and I’m delighted that we’re able to offer this service for free to people in Sheffield. I want Sheffield to be the most digitally switched-on city in Britain and this new service is a really important part of that vision. Our libraries are brilliant community facilities and I hope this encourages even more people to use them.

“As well as the free WiFi service, you can also learn how to get online and use a computer in branches. There’s something for everyone, so if you don’t use your local library yet, then pop down and see what’s on offer.”

Computer classes run in libraries across Sheffield to help people get online. Many run with the

help of partners including Heeley Development Trust, South Yorkshire Police and the Halifax Bank.

The WiFi was provided through a grant from Arts Council England to provide and enhance free WiFi for library users. Darren Henley, Chief Executive of Arts Council England, said: “This important fund is enabling libraries across England to offer more vital services to their users and encourage more people to use and enjoy their local libraries.”

STEEL CITY BEER FESTIVAL NOMINATES SHEFFIELD CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AS THIS YEAR'S CHARITY Sheffield Children's Hospital has been chosen as the local charity for the 42nd Steel City Beer and Cider Festival, taking place later in the year.

The event, organised by the Sheffield branch of the Campaign For Real Ale, runs from 19th to 22nd October in the Kelham Island Museum and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the country. Each year the festival selects a local charity and then arranges collections throughout the festival on their behalf.

Festival Organiser Louise Singleton said "I am delighted that we have been able to work with the Children's Hospital this year. I know from personal experience what a fantastic job the Hospital does, and how important it is that it receives support from the local community. I am sure that our beer drinking visitors will again show how generous they are."

An extra room and an additional bar have been added this year to increase the capacity and it is hoped this will also see an increase in the donations. Visitors will be able to directly contribute to a collection or even donate their unused beer tokens, which CAMRA then converts to cash.

Community Fundraiser for the Children's Hospital Gemma Bower said "It's a brilliant opportunity to raise muchneeded funds for the new Play Tower as part of our new hospital wing, and we really appreciate Sheffield CAMRA supporting us at their annual Beer Festival.

Last year the festival raised £1500 for the Master Cutlers Charity which was split between St Lukes and Rotherham Hospices.

HORROR ACTORS, AUTHORS AND FANS READY FOR HORRORCON UK 2016 Iconic horror actors and authors are all set to descend on South Yorkshire on 9th and 10th July as the second HorrorCon UK event gets underway. Over 2000 people visited the convention last year and event organisers are expecting an even bigger attendance in 2016.

The guests announced to date include actor and stuntman Kane Hodder, best known for his role as Jason Vorhees in 4 films in the Friday the 13th film franchise; Doug Bradley AKA Pinhead of Hellraiser fame, David Naughton the star of American Werewolf in London and Return of the Living Dead’s “scream

queen”, Linnea Quigley, for whom HorrorCon UK is her UK convention debut. In addition, best-selling horror author of The Manitou and ex Penthouse Editor, Graham Masterton, will be appearing along with The Shakespeare of Gore, author, Shaun Hutson (Slugs) More special guests are to be announced over the coming weeks.

Gill Bell, Director of HorrorCon UK, explains “this is the second year we are running HorrorCon UK and the enthusiasm for the event is astounding. Last year we had over 2000 people attend and this year we are expecting a larger turn out with the event being bigger and better than 2015. This is the biggest horror convention in the UK and replicates the US style shows. SLAMFEST STRIKES AGAIN The local music festival Slamfest strikes again in Rotherham this weekend and its FREE entry for everyone.

Rotherham town centre will rock as over 30 local bands, musicians and artists perform all day Saturday and Sunday. This two day festival showcases both established and emerging local talent from Rotherham and district

area as well as Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley.

This year the now firmly established Rotherham town centre music and performing arts event includes more local musicians and acts than in previous years as there are now two venues offering the best local live music. This year the festival centres on The Trades, which is now firmly re-established as the

largest live indoor music venue in Rotherham and once again The Cutlers with their outdoor stage.

The Rotherham African Drummers kick off the festival on Saturday at The Trades followed by a variety of bands,including the tribute act Maiden Iron, solo artists, choirs and dance with the final set from Rotherham’s own The Homesteads.

Sunday offers a different feel with when first up is Electric Spider Club and The Electric Luddites and many more with Shock of the Fall rounding off the festival.

Slamfest is a free event for everyone to enjoy so bring the children and grandparents too for a fantastic weekend of great musical performance.

The event kicks off on Saturday at 4pm and runs through until 1 am then start again on Sunday lunchtime through the evening until 9pm .

ANGLER’S CORNER

Another week of ups and downs…

I’ve been lucky enough to finally get chance to fish with an angler with whom I’ve been trying to arrange a session for some time, so I met Andy on the banks of a local Staffordshire water in the hope of catching some nice carp. Andy had been there a few minutes before I arrived, and already had a bait in the water, so it was a sign of good things when his alarm screeched, and he was immediately into a good fish… which he lost unfortunately!

I had decided to fish with a centrepin reel, just for the pure enjoyment of it, so put on a fairly heavy lead, a short mono hook link, baited with a tiny Mainline boilie, and dropped it into the margins. I’d twinned my reel with one of my Sonik S3 rods, selecting the 1.5lb testcurve (my favourite) just because I knew it would offer good fun with carp which we expected to run into double figures.

My bait hadn’t been in that long before it was picked up, the reel started buzzing, and I was into a fish… which I also lost! We had both lost one, and then things went very quiet… I managed a roach, then a couple of smaller, recently stocked carp, but none of the expected bigger fish. Constantly trickling in bait, both Andy and I could see carp at the rod tips, but they just weren’t feeding; the only thing to do was keep building up the swim, and hope that a change in temperature as the day warmed up, was enough to kick start a feeding spell.

In the early afternoon, we started to pick up fish, and then it went mad as carp really got their heads into a mix of hemp, corn, pellet and chopped boilies. Whilst playing fish, even more carp were coming into the margins, tearing up the bait, and they were so intent on it, that to net a fish, we were moving the others out of the way with the net to scoop up the one on the hook! Madness!

Then it happened, as a real red letter day loomed, I had a phone call to tell me that a lorry had reversed into lovely Mrs. Walker’s car and caused some damage; “…can you come home?” Ahhhh! Typical! Luckily, there was not that much damage, and the other driver admitted liability (he had to, it was parked up, and Mrs. Walker watched it happen from the garden!) so it was quickly sorted, but it was made worse when Andy messaged me later in the day to confirm it had indeed gone mad, and he had really bagged up! Pah! Later in the week, I was out shooting video content for Angler’s Mail magazine, and visited another water in Staffordshire. It’s a water from which I’ve been fortunate enough to catch the largest inhabitant at 31lb 14oz, so was looking forward to returning for another

walk around. I happened upon Darren who was the only angler on the banks, and as all anglers do, we got into discussion. He told me that in all the years he had been fishing this particular water, he had never caught ‘The Big One’, but had caught plenty of other fish. Having shown him my picture of the much sought after fish, in jest, I told him he had five minutes to catch it so I could get it on camera… You can guess what happened next…

A large paddle tail rolled over his baited spot, and his alarm gave a bleep as the bobbin moved up an inch; a pause, and he lifted the rod to discover that it was perhaps a line bite, and nothing but a ball of weed was attached.

He wound in, and was in the process of checking his rig when a second alarm gave an indication! The bobbin gave a positive movement, Darren lifted the rod, and a ten minute battle ensued! Whilst he was playing the fish, we were still joking about ‘The Big One’ when astonishingly, the carp rolled and showed a very deep, brown flank… no way! Surely not?

As it approached the net, I was fairly sure it was indeed the fish we had discussed, although Darren still wasn’t convinced, so I said nothing… In the net however, it was obviously a big fish, and we both thought it was the right one, so I whipped out my phone and compared pictures; it was! Darren was overjoyed to finally catch the target fish, and do you know what, it was an absolute privilege to photograph it, share it with him, and watch as it was weighed at 30lb 8oz. A dream fish for many, and one I was pleased to see banked again… what a way to finish the week!

Speaking to the Mercury Newspaper, Wright said: “I’d like to get a few appearances, I want to be a part of the promotion push as much as I can.”

Wright, who had a successful spell on loan at Hallam FC last season and who is a regular in the under 21’s, signed a new deal with the Blades in April.

On the prospect of working with new boss Chris Wilder, Wright said: “He seems really great, I’m looking forward to the season ahead to get to

“You can’t stay static in a competitive league like the Championship because if you do you get left behind and hopefully we can push forward now,” Broadfoot explained.

“Every season you look forward to it with some hope and hopefully the manager to can push us up the league and we’re getting players in who are a good fit for the club and can improve the squad.”
