TRAMLINES COMES TO LEOPOLD SQUARE From Friday 22nd until Sunday 24th July the highly anticipated Tramlines Festival will be returning to the city of Sheffield and, this year, Leopold Square is being included as one of the music festival’s official fringe venues. Throughout the weekend the upmarket leisure venue will be presenting nine outstanding local musicians and bands all with a range of superb sounds including jazz, funk, soul and swing. On Friday 22nd July the afternoon will commence from 1pm when Sheffield singer/songwriter Julian Jones fills The Square with his stunning vocals and expressive lyrics.

Following Julian’s calming performance, Bongo and Soul Jar will be livening up Leopold Square as they entertain visitors with their original funk, flamboyant songs and energetic stage performance. Last but certainly not least, Leopold regulars, Octofunk, will be returning to The Square from 7pm until 9pm to offer music lovers a unique neo-soul funk experience. As the festival glides into Saturday, so does Leopold Square’s eclectic line-up! On 23rd July from 1pm jazz pioneers Dizzy Club will be reminding visitors of the true sound of jazz as they perform a range of

infectious and passionate melodies. Following an early afternoon of dancing and swinging, The Square will be welcoming the mellowing sound of Nicola Farnon. From 4pm Nicola’s captivating vocals and deep double bass will have festival goers in awe as she performs classics from the 1930s to the 1970s. Visitors are then able to wrap up the second day with blues phenomenon Velocity Brown and the Hotrods. Straight from a gospel, blues and R&B lineage, Velocity Brown offers audiences a meteoric experience they’re unlikely to forget. Good things come

to those who wait as Leopold Square’s line-up on Sunday 24th July is sure to excite all music lovers in Sheffield. First up Ryan Taylor Hammond Trio will be bringing the funky vibes to the festival from 1pm as the band, made up of Ryan Taylor, Phil Johnson and Chris Walker, will be performing a wonderful mix of rare groove, blue note, Latin and swing. Up next is the ever talented, ever groovy, Montuno. With their authentic sound of original jazz, this 7-piece band will be exhilarating the eardrums of every audience member from 4pm. Finally, Papa Soul will be concluding

Leopold Square’s Tramlines line-up perfectly as they rock the best jazz and funk tunes around until 9pm. Nick Yates, from Leopold Square, commented: “We are delighted to be named as one of Tramlines Festival’s official fringe venues as it offers us a fantastic opportunity to show local music lovers the type of performers we regularly showcase. Our line-up is packed full with wonderfully talented musicians who perfectly complement Leopold Square’s cosmopolitan ambience.”

Hailed as the UK’s most influential comedian of all time, voted best comedian of all time by Channel 4, and included as one of the Huffington Post’s favourite UK comedians. DUDE, WHERE’S MY CAR? 14 MILLION BRITS SUFFER CAR AMNESIA New research1 from Direct Line Car Insurance reveals that over 14 million (29 per cent) Brits suffer from car amnesia, admitting they forgot where they parked their vehicle in the last 12 months. On average we spend 25 minutes looking for our vehicles, with male drivers searching the longest (32 minutes) in comparison to their female counterparts (20 minutes). Over the course of a lifetime this means that forgetful Brits can spend almost three days trying to find their misplaced motors. During the course of the last 12 months, on average Brits have lost their car four times. Unsurprisingly, the most common place to

lose your vehicle is the supermarket (34 per cent), followed by multi storey car parks (14 per cent) and out of town shopping centre car parks (11 per cent). According to the research, it’s not just frustration that drivers encounter when they lose their vehicle. Just over a tenth (11 per cent) of Brits have been forced to pay additional parking charges as a result of not being able to locate their car, with the average cost amounting to over £22. As a result, we collectively spend over £126 million a year through suffering car amnesia. Sadly, the punishment does not just stop at fines either, six per cent of forgetful drivers

DVLA WARNS PUBLIC TO IGNORE SCAM EMAILS CALLS AND TEXTS REQUESTING PAYMENT DETAILS

open the link and delete the item. RAC spokesman Pete Williams said: “The cost of motoring is a big concern for motorists so the offer of an unexpected tax rebate can sound very tempting, particularly when it looks as credible and convincing as this scam does. “Always be wary of any request asking for personal information and be alert to any offer that sounds too good to be true.” A statement on the DVLA’s website has announced the Government Digital Service (GDS), will continue to investigate reports of organisations which may be actively misleading users about their services or acting illegally, taking swift action when necessary. By using the online driving licence or vehicle tax transactions on GOV.UK you can be sure that you are dealing directly with DVLA.

Members of the public are being warned to ignore scam emails, texts and phone calls posing as the DVLA requesting personal details in exchange for a vehicle tax refund. The DVLA has issued a statement saying: “We don’t send emails or text messages with links to websites asking you to confirm your personal details or payment information.” The government organisation strongly advises anyone who receives such a request not to

BRANSON: ‘ALL CARS ON ROAD COULD BE ELECTRIC WITHIN 15 YEARS’ Cars fuelled by petrol and diesel could have become obsolete as soon as the early 2030s, Sir Richard Branson is forecasting. If the right government policies are put in place, the entrepreneur says, every UK motorist could be driving an electric car within 15 years. The Virgin boss voiced his views to CNN during the London EPrix that was staged in Battersea Park. He says he believes the technological advances being made through Formula E motorsport will help accelerate a huge shift towards electric car usage. And, he adds, if government policymakers were to set rules requiring half the nation’s cars to be electric within 10 years and all of them to be battery-powered within 15, then “we could make that happen”. Formula E, Sir Richard says, is helping to drive technology forward and will eventually result in ordinary motorists being able to drive hundreds of miles without having to recharge their cars’ batteries. Sir Richard’s DS Virgin Racing team has been taking part in the FIA Formula E Championship since it was launched in 2014. While Battersea Park hosted the championship’s final races, Sir Richard says he believes allowing the cars to use street circuits in the capital and other major cities would help

to further boost the future of electric motoring. He has discussed the idea, he adds, during a “productive meeting” with the London Mayor’s office. Because the cars would produce no emissions, he adds, such a race could begin and finish in London’s O2 Arena or use iconic streets such as The Mall, Park Lane and Hyde Park Corner. The next Formula E season starts in Hong Kong on October 9 with its fourteenth and final race taking place in New York next July. According to the International Energy Agency, only 0.1% of the world’s cars were electric last year, but there are hopes that share could rise to 1.7% by the end of the decade. And a recent report by Bloomberg predicted that electric cars could be cheaper than ones powered by fossil fuels by 2022.

have had their vehicle towed or clamped after failing to find it. Rob Miles, director of motor at Direct Line commented: “The fast pace and busy nature of everyday life often means that when it comes to driving, many drivers often park in a hurry and forget to take note of where they’ve left their car. A simple way to fix this is to take a photograph of the car’s location, that way it’s easy to see the zone or level when you return back. “Forgetting where you’ve left your vehicle is not only a recipe for increased stress levels but it could mean you have to pay out extra parking charges or, worse still, find the car has been clamped or towed away.”

FREE WI-FI IN SHEFFIELD LIBRARIES CYCLING FOR EVERYONE Sheffield libraries have gone wireless with WiFi. Available in all council-run branches, and most community-run ones, people are now able to log on for free from smartphones, tablets, laptops and more than 170 library computers. This means easier studying, job searches, research, instant downloads from the E-library and more opportunities for people to go online. Last year Ofcom, the UK’s communication regulator, announced that 20 per cent of adults are without fixed or mobile broadband in the UK. Councillor Jack Scott, cabinet member for community services and libraries at Sheffield City Council, said: “Wi-Fi has become an essential part of everyday life for many people and I’m delighted that we’re able to offer this service for free to people in Sheffield. I want Sheffield to be the most digitally switched-on city in Britain and this new service is a really important part of that vision. Our libraries are brilliant community facilities and I hope this encourages even more people to

use them. “As well as the free WiFi service, you can also learn how to get online and use a computer in branches. There’s something for everyone, so if you don’t use your local library yet, then pop down and see what’s on offer.” Computer classes run in libraries across Sheffield to help people get online. Many run with the help of partners including Heeley Development Trust, South Yorkshire Police and the Halifax Bank. The WiFi was provided through a grant from Arts Council England to provide and enhance free WiFi for library users. Darren Henley, Chief Executive of Arts Council England, said: “This important fund is enabling libraries across England to offer more vital services to their users and encourage more people to use and enjoy their local libraries.” Visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraryevents for information about computer classes in the libraries or contact your local branch. Details of all libraries in Sheffield are available at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ libraries

STROKES REDUCING IN SHEFFIELD Sheffield patients who have a common heart rhythm disorder that puts them at high risk of suffering a stroke have benefited from a local programme that has substantially increased the number of people receiving treatments. The programme, run by NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), provides pharmacist and nurse support to GP practices to identify patients who would benefit from the treatment. As a result nearly 1,400 more patients are receiving treatments, which should see over 30 strokes prevented in the city. Dr Andrew McGinty, Clinical Director for Active Ageing at NHS Sheffield CCG said, “Around 10,000 people in Sheffield have atrial fibrillation – the most common heart rhythm disorder – that puts them at particular risk of suffering a stroke, and

in this group the stroke is likely to be especially severe. “The stroke risk can be halved by effective drug treatment, though typically across the country only around half of those who could benefit actually received treatment. “The programme has been in place for several years and we are pleased to actually now see strokes reducing in this group of patients in the city.” In recognition of the Sheffield success story representatives of the local programme were recently invited to the House of Commons for the launch of a national report on reducing strokes in people having atrial fibrillation, in which the Sheffield programme features as an exemplar of best practice.

MERCURY MERCURYJOBS JOBS JOBS& &LEGAL & LEGAL TRADES WANTED MEZE PUBLISHING PEGGED AS A ‘RISING STAR’

JOB VACANCIES

BY BIBLE OF BOOK TRADE THE BOOKSELLER Phil Turner, Managing Director of Meze Publishing, a Sheffieldbased publishing company specialising in cook books has been selected as one of The Bookseller’s Rising Stars this year. The Rising Stars is an annual list compiled by The Bookseller who select around 40 talented and forward-thinking ‘rising stars’ in the industry, whose actions have caught the eye and who have been singled out as possible leaders of the future. While the list does slightly veer towards the younger people in the trade, it is not age-based. Instead, they are also looking for people coming into the industry with fresh eyes, or veterans of the trade who may have switched gears to explore new opportunities and ventures. The line-up will be revealed in The Bookseller on July 1st. Tom Tivnan, Features and Insight Editor who started the idea in 2011 said: “One of the key things we look for in our Rising Stars are those

we feel are revolutionising the book industry. “Phil Turner and Meze are doing that in spades with their innovative ways of working and finding new audiences. “We feel optimistic about the long-term health of the trade as people like Phil and his company coming in and changing it for the better." The Bookseller is the world’s leading magazine and website for the book industry; their website is the book trade’s most visited UK site and it has been the business magazine of the book industry since 1858. Meze is the brainchild of specialist cook book designer, Paul Cocker and experienced publishers Phil Turner and Nick Hallam. The firm specialises in publishing regional cook books called the ‘Get Stuck In’ series alongside chef titles, including books from the likes of MasterChef 2015 winner Simon Wood, Scottish Chef of the Year Adam Handling and Great British Menu’s Colin McGurran. Their

Manchester Cook Book was recently the best-selling cook book in 10 Waterstones stores in the North West, outselling the likes of Jamie Oliver, Nigel Slater and Nigella Lawson. They have now published 13 of the regional books covering places as far afield as Suffolk, Lancashire, Oxfordshire and Newcastle. “It’s a great privilege to be considered a Rising Star, especially as I’m 40 in a few months!” said co-owner of Meze Publishing, Phil Turner. “Of course this recognition is for all of the team, really, who have helped us grow this company from nothing to a real Sheffield success story over the last three years. “And the really exciting thing is that there is a lot more to come from us – and hopefully being a Rising Star will create even more opportunities.” Next in line for the ‘Get Stuck In’ series is The Birmingham Cook Book, The North Yorkshire Cook Book and The Bristol Cook Book.

MATLOCK BATH MUSIC FESTIVAL ROCKS THE COUNTRYSIDE

on drums, Mike Milnthorpe on bass, Toni Lane on guitar and the completely bonkers Mike O’Brien on the vocals this lot played a blinder. With simple foot-tappers like Sunglasses, Death, Lumpy Legs and the brilliant The Yorkshire Groove Pocketful O’Nowt did it for me. Quite simply, this gang simple did what any band is supposed to do and that’s entertain! The singer’s even written a book called Sixty Odd Songs. Next stop was The Fishpond as we caught singer songwriter Emily Abdy who did the James Bond themed hit Skyfall to name but one with 29 Days, a Words & Pic by Roy Goodall threesome from Chesterfield occupying the outside terrace bar. Young they may be, and yes, they Extending to almost a half mile and covering have much to learn, but they gave it their best and eight different venues this yearly festival of received warm support. sound once again won many plaudits as bands, Festival regulars Sherocks did a good job at duos and solo wannabes did their thing. Princess Victoria with Sweet Home Alabama, AC/ Working our way down the half mile strip from DC’s Highway To Hell which went down a storm, the north end of Matlock Bath, the first port of and stuff by ZZ Top this fivesome played the game call saw Another Bloody Day, a singer songwriter whose name I missed kept the County And Station well. With more bands filling more stages until closing entertained, as did Saskia & Tony, who were time this popular and welcoming festival yet again camped out side Bank Note, a minute or so walk did good business. Yes, the weather held a few down the road who played a cluster of acoustic back, but for my money this free one day festival, tunes and covers. and for me that is key as it keeps the day special, Pocketful O’ Nowt a foursome from Barnsley/ ticks all my boxes and hopefully will continue to Rotherham way who’ve been at it for only five years, really were a crowd puller. With Simon Piper grow and develop over the coming years.

ORIGINAL RUDEBOY AND EXSPECIAL NEVILLE STAPLE ARRIVES IN SHEFFIELD FOR TRAMLINES 2015 was a very exciting year for Neville Staple. Headlining The Avalon Stage at Glastonbury. Touring up and down the UK, playing festivals, gigs and private house parties and this July he visits Sheffield to DJ at The Viper Rooms as part of Tramlines on Sunday 24th July. Neville’s thirty-five year career in the music business is well documented. From the early days with The Coventry Automatics, The Specials, & FunBoy3 in the late ‘70s and 80’s, to The Special Beat and various other collaborations during his solo career from the 90’s up to the present day. Nevilles autobiography, The Original Rude Boy, was published by Aurum Press in the UK in May 2009. “Neville also sometimes appears playing a DJ Set…..This goes back to the early 60’s where DJ’s would set up their own sound systems and compete against each other. Artists would ally themselves to a particular sound system and provide their chosen system with unique recordings called “Dubplates”. These were jealously guarded by the sound system. The ‘selecter’ would hand the dubplate to the DJ who would play it. The Sound system, might

also have its own ‘Toaster’. Toasting was the direct forerunner of rapping and hip-hop. The first time people spoke over a recorded beat was the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, in the 1950’s”. In 2013 Neville produced a new album called ‘Ska Crazy’ with his band which was released in May 2014, ahead of his extensive tour, which includes old Ska classic covers and brand new material. His wife Christine Staple and long time friend Daddy Woody, a Jamaican DJ/ Artist, also provide vocals on the album. Neville has also worked on various collaborations with ‘The Mutants’ (Rhythm and Punk Review) including co-writing 4 tracks on the album – one of them co-written with his wife Christine, ‘The Talks’ and ‘Flipron’ as well as tracks with ‘The Dub Pistols’ (released 2014) and ‘Duplex’. CIRQUE DU SOLEIL BRINGS NEW SHOW VAREKAI TO SHEFFIELD Cirque du Soleil’s brand new production, Varekai, Tales of The Forest, will open its tour here in Sheffield with 5 performances in the venue’s intimate theatre style Steel Hall setting 2nd to 5th February 2017. Tickets for the criticallyacclaimed show, updated and featuring new acts yet to be seen in the UK will go on general sale at 9am on Friday 15th July, priced £49.50 & £60.50 (including booking fee) from www.sheffieldarena.co.uk, the Arena ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56 or in person from the venue. About Varekai Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary world – a world where something else is

possible. A world called Varekai. The sky lets go a solitary young man, and the story of Varekai begins. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world imbued with fantastical creatures, a young man takes flight in an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of pure and undiluted possibility, begins an inspired incantation to a life rediscovered and to a newly found wonder in the mysteries of the world and the mind. The word Varekai (pronounced ver·ay·’kie) means “wherever” in the Romany language of the gypsies—the universal wanderers. Directed by Dominic Champagne, this production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus

tradition, and to those who quest with infinite passion along the path that leads to Varekai.

ONE FOR SORROW? TWO FOR JOY Are you looking for your perfect partner? Have you considered internet dating but been put off by horror stories and safety concerns? Then why not try the "old-school" approach - a dating agency who offer their services on a face-toface basis? Mother and daughter business partners Sue and Liz now run Two For Joy Introductions and they want to meet you! All applicants are vetted in person, and undergo checks on identity, address, marital status and any previous criminal convictions before being accepted as a client, at which time a profile will be created. Even then the clients' safety is paramount - no contact

details are passed directly, and if required, a free chaperone service is available on the first meeting! Searches for suitable matches are carefully conducted based on interests and preferences, and during the first twelve months' membership Two For Joy guarantee a minimum of five suitable matches, or free membership beyond the twelve months until they have found ideal partnerships. Sue and Liz also offer free help and advice throughout your membership period so you always have someone to talk to - something an internet dating site certainly can't offer! Why not take advantage of an

Chorizo, Res y cebolla (Thinly sliced tender sirloin steak sautéed with sweet caramelised red onions), Mozzarella y Jamón (Buffalo mozzarella pieces wrapped in crispy parma ham), Chorizo y Huevo con Patatas (Crispy potatoes saut́eed with spicy chorizo topped with a fried egg) and Tomate, mozzarella y basílico (Buffalo mozzarella, ripe tomatoes and fresh basil drizzled in olive oil). The food was quickly brought to the table and was of a very high standard with Cubana’s famous meatballs definitely living up to their name and highly recommended. Some people’s fear with tapas is that you won’t get enough food and will be peckish later. Not the case at Cubana I assure you. You can tell why the Cubana is busy every night with the standard of food they serve and the atmosphere they provide. After your meal your more than welcome to party the night away downstairs in the lively bar. Well worth a visit!

After more than a decade on Trippet Lane Cubana moved to Leopold Square in the summer of 2014. The iconic Sheffield Bar and Restaurant has a great reputation for food, drink and atmosphere so we were very excited to experience this for ourselves. Walking through the bar downstairs, filled with Cuban music and cocktails flowing it was like stepping into a small part of Havana hidden in Sheffield’s City Centre. After being shown to our table in the upstairs restaurant we were soon excited by a menu featuring huge selection of their signature rums and an even bigger selection of tapas, featuring a combination of authentic hot and cold dishes. We decided to try Albóndigas (Cubana’s famous meatballs),

CHEAPEST ENGRAVERS IN SHEFFIELD

The complex, which covers an area of circa 22 acres (89,000 m2), dates from 1848, replacing an inadequate barracks at Hillfoot. The barracks is divided into three terraces. The first terrace faces onto what is now Langsett Road. This contained the Mess establishment, quarters for around 40 officers and a similar number of servants, and a chapel. This building has a length of about 354 feet and a width and height of about 40 feet, is three storeys high and has a mixture of gothic and castellated styles. The other buildings of the barracks consisted of a large five bedroomed house serving as the Garrison Commander’s Quarters outside the walls, a 58-patient two storey hospital incorporating a barracks for RAMC personnel, a Dental Clinic and a facility for treating women, Infantry soldiers' quarters, a clock towered building, with Cavalry soldiers' quarters on the first floor and stabling for 260 horses on the ground floor, a Fives Court, a Riding School, a school for 80 children and accommodation for the schoolmistress, married quarters flats for 50 families provided outside the walls,

a Gun Shed housing six Field guns, the Barracks Store with living quarters for the Barracks Sergeant, a Guard Room, incorporating a Police Room, Detention Cells, and an exercise yard, a Vehicle Shed (built in 1903) which could house 26 motor cars, a Veterinary Infirmary large enough to house 18 horses a Granary, four cookhouses and various workshops. On the northern side of the Barracks runs the River Loxley. On the night of Friday 11 March 1864 the ill-fated Dale Dyke Dam further up the Loxley Valley at Bradfield burst causing the Great Sheffield Flood and the resulting flood waters breached a stone wall that was three feet thick. The water rose to the height of twelve feet outside the window of Sergeant Foulds' quarters and drowned two of his children. On 26 July 1932, an auction was held on the instructions of the War Department by Eadon & Lockwood at Sheffield. However, when bidding reached only £12,000, the auction was terminated and the Barracks withdrawn from sale. In October of that year, the complex was sold to Burdall’s Ltd, a manufacturing chemist noted for its gravy salt, and it became known as the Burdall’s Buildings.

The name of the suburb comes from Hillsborough House built and named in 1779 in tribute to the Earl of Hillsborough who lived in Hillsborough, County Down. Approximately 42 people were killed in the immediate Hillsborough area in the Great Sheffield

Flood of 1864 and there was much devastation. The area only started to be built up as the district recovered from the flood with the success of the steel and engineering industries in Sheffield creating a demand for suburban housing. In 1889 Hillsborough was described

The arrival of the electric tram in 1903 was a big boost to the development of the suburb; it initially ran as far as the top of Parkside Road before extending to Middlewood in 1913. House building continued until around 1909 when most of present day Hillsborough’s road infrastructure had been created.

Established almost 750 years ago, this beautiful olde worlde country pub has been a favourite for generations of local residents. Boasting open fires and a superb menu of freshly prepared, home-cooked food, it is both a wonderful place for a drive out, and a famous resting place for walkers enjoying the breath-taking countryside surrounding the Inn. One of Hillsborough Corner’s best-known landmark hostelries is The Shakey, just on Bradfield Road. Originally a brewhouse, it has always been known as a welcoming and busy meeting place for locals and visitors alike. The traditional but lively bar is complemented by a quiet and restful beer garden; just the place to relax after

shopping in the neighbouring stores. As well as a favourite for shoppers, The Shakey is extremely popular with football fans, especially in recent years with its introduction of HD Televisions. For 2015, landlord Murphy has reintroduced the popular Shakey Season Ticket which gives extra discounts during all live football matches – and he has not one but two Sky systems and BT Sport which means customers need never miss a match or sporting event!

FOCUS ON HILLSBOROUGH La Plata Social Club There is a La Plata Club in Argentina and another in Spain, but the homeliest and friendliest is surely to be found right here in S6 and it’s even friendlier now with new steward Tim Brooke behind the bar. Readers are welcome to call in for a coffee after shopping in Hillsborough Centre, only one minute’s walk from the club, based on Walkley Lane for many years. With easy parking and with Supertram

and bus stops close by, La Plata’s excellent location is equalled only by its comfortable, clean and bright surroundings. You can sit inside or in the welcoming Beer Garden right outside the front door. Brian Helliwell of La Plata says “We want shoppers and their families to visit and see what the club offers; it really is a cosy and family-friendly home from home.” After entering through the Beer Garden you arrive in the Family Room which is well furnished and comfortable. Live acts appear on stage every Saturday and bingo is played several times during the week.

On Mondays there’s bingo with free snacks provided, on Wednesdays it’s “All-PayOut” night and on Fridays and Sundays there is a £500 jackpot and Open the Box. Then there’s the separate Pool Room, recently refurbished it provides players with the privacy to enjoy a quiet game or watch sport on TV. Low priced drinks include Stones, John Smiths and Heineken, plus S6ers own Bradfield Brewery beer is available. With almost 500 members La Plata is already well-known inS6, so why not visit soon and see if you might like to join them?

which brings me to Alan. Angler Alan Harrison has overcome illiteracy to produce his first children’s book, an short, but endearing tale entitled ‘Curious Colin Carp’. To me, that’s a fine achievement, and it gets even more exciting when you consider that Alan’s book has been picked up by a publisher, (www.austinmacauley.com) and is now available to buy from a variety of outlets including retail giant Amazon! The book came about after finding that his daughter enjoyed his bedtime tales, so Alan, apparently without the required skills, sought to write a book which parents could share with their children. That shows some character, and makes Alan more of a success than the condescending author on the website I mentioned earlier! Brilliant! Alan did his research, recognised his target audience, relayed a tale of fishy friendship, and got it published, and I’m overjoyed that

FOUR SIGN FOR BLADES by Andrew Smith After the signings of Mark Duffy and Chris Hussey last month, Chris Wilder has stepped up the recruitment drive in the last week with the signings of four players. James Wilson, 27, a centreback previously of Oldham Athletic joins the Blades. Also joining Sheffield United is Jack O’Connell, 22, who signs a three-year deal from Brentford after making 18 appearances for the Bees in an 18-month spell. Also signing a three-year deal is the former Coventry City midfielder John Fleck, 24. The midfielder is regarded as one of the League’s best midfielders and was ever present for the Blues last season making 43 appearances.

To complete a trio of centre-half signings, Jake Wright, 30, joins the Blades from Oxford United, who he captained to automatic promotion from League Two last season. Wilson and O’Connell, alongside earlier signings Duffy and Hussey, all made their debuts in a Blade shirt in United’s first pre-season game at Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday. Wilder fielded two separate eleven’s in the two halves, as United came away 5-0 victors. The first goal came in the 21st minute, a ball whipped in by new boy Hussey was met at the

back post by Matt Done who fired home. A second minutes later was tapped in by Marc McNulty after a pass across the six-yard box by Louis Reed. Matt Done got his second and the Blades third with a wicked shot from range, which had too much power for the Stocksbridge stopper. McNulty completed his brace by taking the ball round the keeper to slot home. In the second half, Mark Duffy found Che Adams free on the penalty spot, who then clinically finished to make it five in front of 1665 at the Look Local Stadium.

READY TO GO Having completed his switch to Wednesday early in pre-season, Steven Fletcher is now looking forward to a fresh challenge at Hillsborough. The Owls’ pre-season fixture schedule gets underway this week with a trip to Alfreton on Wednesday 13 July. From then, the games come thick and fast with Chesterfield (16 July) and Benfica (20 July) before jetting off to Portugal for the five-day training camp. Keen to get the ball rolling, Fletcher said: “The players are working hard, we’ve got a few pre-season games coming up and that is something to look forward to. “When I got the call to come here, I drove down straight away so it was good to get it all sorted nice and early.

“I know a few of the lads and what they achieved last year and I know they all want to build on that which is our aim.” The experienced striker scored goals last season in the Premier League, the Euro qualifiers and the French top flight. And the striker is now ready for the challenge ahead in the Championship, where Fletcher

is expecting is tough season ahead. “This is a great club to be at, it’s going to be a tough league this year, especially with the teams that have come down and how strong the other teams are getting, so it will be a good league. “I spoke to Baz before coming here and he told me how good a place it is so I can’t wait to get going.”

PRE-SEASON PREPARATION PIVOTAL TO ON FIELD SUCCESS Andy Butler underlined the importance of last weekend’s squad training sessions in Scotland. Manager Darren Ferguson has returned to his homeland in a bid to integrate new signings in to the Rovers setup, according to Butler. “It should be a good team exercise, it’s good to get all the lads together and have a little bit of bonding so we get to know each other,” he said.

PARKGATE EXERCISE GOOD FOR MILLERS, SAYS ALAN STUBBS Rotherham United boss Alan Stubbs presided over the first game of pre-season and was pleased to get minutes into a number of players in the 7-0 victory over Parkgate. The Millers manager fielded two different 11’s either side of the interval with goals from Kirk Broadfoot, Trialist, an own goal and Jerry Yates being capped by a superb Danny Ward hat-trick. Forward Jonson ClarkeHarris was the only casualty in the Millers’ ranks and was withdrawn before half time and Stubbs insists he was pleased with what he saw from his side: “I think the most important thing from an exercise point of view is that we’ve got what we wanted out of it,” he told www. themillers.co.uk. “Everyone has got 45 minutes under their belts and on the whole everyone has come through it apart from Jono who has got a slight knock.” There was initial concern after

“That’s what’s going to be important this season, the whole squad – the gaffer has made it clear- need to stick together and really benefit from being around each other and have a good atmosphere. “The news lads have settled in really well, they’ve shown what they can do in the few days that they’ve been here. They’re not shy, we don’t want shy people around here, we want people to speak their minds and that’s what they’ve done so far.” The attention to detail surrounding fitness is all part of the longer term project, starting on 6th August and the season opener against Accrington Stanley. “We all want to play football,” he said. “These days aren’t that

enjoyable but we have to get through them to play the football. “We’re looking forward to them and it’s all about the first game of the season; the pre-season friendlies are there for fitness but it’s all based around the first game which we’re looking forward to. “It’s tough but pre season is all about fitness and we’re in to get fit for the campaign which starts in a month’s time. We’re looking forward to the season but it’s important to get these days under our belts. “The base fitness is what you really rely on all season. You have a poor pre-season and you’re going to have a poor season. The lads have come back really fit and it’s a good start so far.”

Clarke-Harris went down in the opening half but upon review of the injury Stubbs is confident that the striker’s substitution was merely precautionary. “I think we wanted him to come off more than anything, there wouldn’t be any positive in him carrying on at this stage of the season and it was more precautionary than anything,” he explained. “He’s said he feels fine afterwards and we’ll just assess it but we don’t expect it to be too significant.” Meanwhile, Danny Ward caught the eye of the healthy crowd at Roundwood as he bagged a well-taken second half hat-trick and his boss admits the pre-season goals will do his side no harm. “I think from a striker point of view it’s always nice to score goals irrespective of who you

are playing against,” Stubbs added. “When he [Danny Ward] came on he did what he did in the game and what he’s been doing in training. “He looked very sharp and bright and while the scoreline is not the most important thing it will be good for the lads to get goals and get started straight away.” Stubbs also had chance to look at a number of trialists against the Steelmen and was impressed with their contributions, adding: “I thought they did very well. They’ve done themselves no harm whatsoever. “As we step up the opposition we’ll have a better idea of where we are and we’ll be in a position to make more informed decisions.”
