CELEBRATE THE HITS OF FRANKIE VALLIE AND THE FOUR SEASONS AT SHEFFIELD CITY HALL Hit stage show Big Girls Don’t Cry celebrates the golden anniversary of million-selling single Working My Way Back to You by working its way around the UK visiting the nation’s top venues on a countrywide tour, calling in at Sheffield City Hall on Saturday 5th November. The critically-acclaimed stage show features the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Show producer Michael Taylor says: “Oh what a night of hit songs is coming to town.” During the Sixties and Seventies No1 hits Sherry, December 1963 (Oh What a Night), Walk Like a Man, Rag Doll and Big Girls Don’t Cry saw the Four Seasons and lead singer Frankie Valli propelled to super stardom, selling a combined 100 million records nationwide. Show producer Michael Taylor says that Big Girls Don’t Cry authentically revives the sublime harmonies of New Jersey’s finest performers. “There’s a Four Seasons song that shares a special place in everyone’s heart,” he says. “Big Girls Don’t Cry showcases Frankie’s incredible falsettos and features solo hits that range from the exuberant – the rock’n’roll nostalgia of Grease, to the spine-tingling – show-stealers such as My Eyes Adored You.” Falsetto, tenor, baritone and bass four-piece harmonies perfectly recreate the dynamic combination of Frankie Valli, Bob Gudio, Tommy de
Vito and Nick Massi respectively. Drawing from a repertoire that includes Let’s Hang On, Beggin’, Who Loves You and I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Michael promises music fans attending that they will never more than a song away from another classic hit. MOTORISTS HIT BY FOURTH CONSECUTIVE MONTHLY FUEL PRICE RISE Motorists saw the price they were paying for fuel at the pumps rise for the fourth month in a row in June, new RAC Fuel Watch figures show. The latest increase means the cost of filling up an average family car with petrol is now £5.64 higher than it was at the beginning of March. But the motoring organisation says drivers are still paying less for their fuel than they were a year ago. According to RAC Fuel Watch, the average price of petrol increased by 1.5p a litre to 112.17p in June. The price of diesel, meanwhile, rose by 1.66p to 112.39p per litre. That means it now costs £61.69 to fill up a typical family car with petrol compared to £60.88 at the beginning of June and £56.05
four months ago when the average price was 101.91p a litre. Diesel, meanwhile, now typically costs 11p per litre more than it did in early March, meaning a comparable fill-up will now set motorists back £61.81. The cost is £5.96 more than at the beginning of March and 91p higher than a month ago. Commenting on the latest rise, the motoring organisation’s fuel spokesman, Simon Williams, said: “June was another bad month for motorists with the price of petrol going up again. While it was only a penny and a half it makes for a rise of more than 10p since the start of March. “Filling up with unleaded is now £5.64 more expensive, which is enough to make
DVLA REVENUE DROPS BY £93 MILLION AFTER AXING OF TAX DISC
loss of revenue is even greater than many had feared. The RAC said several factors could explain the fall in VED income, such as the increase in low carbon emission vehicles, which are cheaper to tax, and unfamiliarity with the new system. But spokesman Simon Williams said the drop still represented “a significant sum”, and urged the DfT to conduct a further survey to build up a better picture of the problem. “If this were to find that the number of untaxed vehicles is still at the same rate as when the last survey was conducted or, worse still, has increased, then action needs to be taken urgently to counter this,” he said. “We just hope that this doesn’t prove to be the tip of the iceberg and that the figure does not keep on rising, especially as the DVLA had predicted the new system would lead to savings of £10m.” A DVLA spokesman added that a switch to payment by direct debit had caused a lag in when money was received.
The Government’s income from vehicle tax dropped by £93 million following the scrapping of the paper tax disc, official figures have revealed. According to information from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), revenue from vehicle excise duty (VED) fell from £6.023 billion in 2014/15 to £5.930bn the year after. The drop has sparked calls from the RAC for a further investigation amid fears that the abolition of the tax disc has caused an increase in vehicle tax evasion. In 2014, when the tax disc was axed in favour of an online system, it was hoped that the move would save the DVLA millions of pounds every year. Despite this, a roadside survey carried out by the Department for Transport (DfT) led experts to predict the new taxation method would lose the Government’s purse around £80m. At the time, it was found that about 1.5% of all vehicles were unlicensed – a total of around 560,000 vehicles. This was an increase on the 0.6% of unlicensed vehicles recorded in 2013, which represented a loss in revenue of £35m. But the latest figures, published in the DVLA’s annual report and accounts, show that the

an unpleasant dent in household budgets up and down the country, especially for those who have more than one car or need to fill up regularly.” Despite June’s increase motorists are still paying about 5p a litre less for petrol and 8.5p less for diesel than they were 12 months ago, Mr Williams added. Wholesale fuel prices, meanwhile, only increased slightly after the fall in the value of the pound following Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, he said. That, Mr Williams added, was due to oil prices dropping at the same time. Looking ahead, Mr Williams said OPEC’s over production was likely to keep the price of oil at around $50 per barrel. Prices could even fall, he added, once production issues have been resolved.

SHEFFIELD CITY REGION DEVOLUTION - HAVE YOUR SAY! Sheffield City Region has a clear plan to grow its economy. The unique Devolution Deal gives the region £1.3 billion to spend over the next 30 years. The Deal offers new powers and funding to improve infrastructure, transport, skills, housing and other drivers of business growth. To access these powers and this funding, some changes
are required to our local decision making structures. These include giving locally elected leaders and a directly elected City Region Mayor new powers, drawn down from Government. This means formally extending the area in which parts of the region work together so that it reflects the way that the economy really works. Devolution - How does it work?
Government is offering places in England the chance to have greater responsibility and control over decisions that affect their areas. This process of transferring powers and decisions from a national to a more local level is called “devolution”. The powers from Government will come down to locally elected Council Leaders and a directly elected City Region Mayor. This does not involve any functions being transferred from councils within the Sheffield City Region. The view is that locally based Leaders (including a directly elected City Region Mayor) are better placed to make the decisions that help grow the regional economy and create jobs. Your views are needed Before the new powers are formalised by Government the views of residents and businesses across the Sheffield City Region are sought about how you think this opportunity should work. It is important for every resident and business in the region to provide an opinion – please take a few minutes to complete the survey. https://sheffield.citizenspace.com/policyimprovement/sheffield-city-regiondevolution-have-your-say/consult_view
STREETS AHEAD WANT TO HELP? The Streets Ahead team is asking residents and businesses to tell them what they think about the works that have been carried out across the city. People are being urged to complete a short online questionnaire, which has been launched today, asking them about many different aspects of the upgrade works, including road and pavement resurfacing and the installations of the new energy efficient LED streetlights that have been carried out across the city so far. Cllr Bryan Lodge said: “We are almost four years into the five year period of upgrade works in the city. We have completed more than 450 miles of road resurfacing and more than 1,000 miles of pavement resurfacing. Moving around the city we can all see the change that the Streets Ahead works are making. This questionnaire is designed to gauge residents and businesses views about all aspects of the works. This data will help the team as we move from the upgrading phase to the maintenance phase of the contract.” Graeme Symonds, Streets Ahead’s CIP Director, said: “We carry out a questionnaire like this regularly so that we can see what people think of the work that has been carried out so far. We are asking the public, particularly those that have already had Streets Ahead works take place on their street, questions about the works so that we can understand more about what people think about the upgrades.” The questionnaire should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete and it can be done online at: https://sheffield.citizenspace.com/placebusiness-strategy/streets-ahead-schemefeedback-survey For residents that do not have access to the internet, but would like to let Streets Ahead know what they think about the works, paper questionnaires are available via 0114 273 4567.

STEP BACK IN TIME TO 1940S BRITAIN WITH THE CRICH TRAMWAY VILLAGE WW2 – HOME FRONT EVENT The Village is themed for the WW2 era from Monday 8th to Friday 12th August with wartime songs from Jayne Darling and music by The Tea Dance Band. Rita’s Tearooms will be serving wartime fayre and the Red Lion public house will be serving drinks. Children can take part in activities around the site. Vintage trams from the era will be running all week, but the week-end of 13th and 14th August is when the main event comes alive. One of the Event Organisers, Dough Kightley said: “With the Tramway street decked out in bunting and the buildings protected with sand bags, visitors can get immersed in the WW2 atmosphere, be ready for anything our enemies can throw at us and be ready for the arrival of the military!” Over the weekend, entertainment will extend to Victoria Park with Jayne Darling being joined by Kevin Mac and Marina Mae. Visitors can expect air-raid warnings and the sound of low flying aircraft. You will need your identity card for a real taste of life during the Second World War. Historic wartime road and military vehicles will be on show and on the move. Children will be able to take part in the Crich “Boot Camp” and the evacuee scenarios. Watch out for the antics of off-duty personnel and the spivs! Also for the weekend only, you can see the Law at War in a traditional setting – but take care not to get arrested! Another of the Event Organisers, Brian Roberts said: “If it’s period music you want, then you’ll find it on the Bandstand all day long Saturday and Sunday and at the end of each day after the service of remembrance all our singers get together for a rousing flag waving singalong of popular songs from the era - a great way to end the day.”
General Admission prices are £16.00 for adults, £12.00 for seniors (aged 60+) and £9.00 for children (aged 4 – 15 years). Anyone dressing in 1940s costume will get group rate admission charges. The tickets are valid for 12 months (excluding later 1940s week-end dates). A 1940s dance will take place on the evening of Saturday 13th August from 7:30pm to 10:30pm with the Ashby Little Big Band providing the music. There will be a licensed bar until 11:00pm. Tickets for the dance at £5 per person are limited and can be pre-booked by calling us and checking availability. Crich Tramway Village is open daily from 10.00am – 5.30pm (last admissions 4.00pm) until 30th October 2016. For further information Tel. 01773 854321 or visit: www.tramway.co.uk

THOUSANDS RAISED AT STAR-STUDDED YOUDAN TROPHY FUNDRAISER Former Liverpool and Ireland international Mark Lawrenson lined up with SWFC and England star David Hirst and referee legends Keith Hackett and Mark Halsey for a sporting dinner that raised £3,000 for two Sheffield charities. Comedian Jed Stone was MC for the Youdan Trophy sporting dinner that successfully raised £1,500 each for the Children’s Hospital Charity and local youth housing charity Roundabout. The charity sporting dinner was held at Sheffield’s Holiday Inn Royal Victoria. Keith Hackett, director of Youdan Trophy tournament organisers You-Are-The-Ref.com, said: “Our sporting dinner was a fabulous night and raised a fantastic amount for two very worthwhile causes. “It was great to have the support of so many people that attended.” Roundabout is Sheffield’s local youth housing charity, providing shelter, support and life skills to over 150 young people in Sheffield everyday who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The Children’s Hospital Charity’s provides funding for care over and
above the standard NHS provision, enhancing The Children’s Hospital in Sheffield and matching world class equipment with existing world class expertise. The Youdan Trophy international tournament has quadrupled in size from its 2015 debut. Over 800 players will compete at the Sheffield competition that kicks off on August 1st. Clubs from Rosenborg to Everton, Seattle Sounders to FC Basel and Newcastle United to Royal Antwerp will line up with topflight teams from Africa, Europe
and the USA for the tournament which includes the city’s own Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. UK Premiership and Championship clubs include Watford, Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest Stoke City, Derby County, Charlton Athletic, QPR and Middlesbrough. Sheffield-based You-Are-TheRef.com, which is the world’s leading independent authority and education platform for match officials, are behind the creation of the competition which celebrates
football’s first ever tournament; the Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. which was played only once in 1867 at Bramall Lane. The Youdan Trophy is set to take place in Sheffield from August 1st-5th. Group games will take place at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park and the Warminster Road facility of the University of Sheffield. Free tickets for the finals are available from www.youdantrophy.com

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I was lucky enough to receive an invite this week to Whiston Hall Fishery, just a few short miles from Alton Towers, in Staffordshire. It’s a venue I have fished before for carp, but this time, my target species were roach, after rumours of some quality fish in what has usually been recognised as a specimen carp fishery. I don’t own a pole, so a light float rod and reel were used to swing a small 3BB dart float a rod length out into four feet of water, and the size 18 hook was baited with a couple of plump, white maggots. No sooner had the float settled to leave a few millimetres of red tip showing, then it slid away to the side, and a quick strike was met with a solid thump as a chubby roach tried to shed the hook. A short fight, and a roach of around half a pound was quickly in the net; things were looking promising! The weather wasn’t particularly conducive to roach fishing, with bright, cloudless skies and high temperatures, but I had to keep plugging away to find out exactly what stamp of roach were present. I was actually fishing in water which was overshadowed by a tree, which meant it was a tiny bit cooler and the fish were happy to feed. I wanted to keep the fish on the deck if possible, rather than have them come up in the water and increase the area in which I could have a bite, so a handful of sweetcorn and hemp was scattered atop the float, and the hook bait changed to a single piece of corn… and the fish kept coming! Lovely shiny roach averaging 6-8oz, with the odd bigger sample were netted on almost every cast, but as the temperature rose, so did the fish, and I started to hit bites on the drop as fish moved up in the water column. As a result, I moved the float to half depth, moved all the shot to the float, and then added a bread punch hook bait with a tiny no.8 shot a few inches up the line to try and hit
CHESTERFIELD DUO WIN MERCURY PAIRS COMPETITION The Sheffield Mercury sponsored Pairs Competition caught the attention of a strong turn out of entrants at Longacre Fishery, Tansley, near Matlock with John and Mark Poxon from Chesterfield taking the top honours by catching a 15Ib bag of carp and barbel. In second place was Kirsty Lee from Sheffield and Aidan Broadbent from Winster, with Joe Chapman from Tansley and Jimmy Wood from Nottingham taking the third spot. Brian Johnson from Nottingham landed a superb 10lb Koi Carp, long after the whistled had gone.. With the weather remaining reasonable everyone had a good day with owners Andrew and Kathy Norton providing expert help and advice along with welcoming refreshments.
fish ‘on the drop’. Moving the majority of shot to the float meant that the float was cocked almost as soon as it hit the water, and anything which happened afterwards was easy to spot. The rig was swung out, and bites were almost instantaneous as fish raced to get at the slowly sinking bread. Roach after shiny roach took the bait, and with only a few maggots fired over the top, I quickly caught almost 25lb of pristine fish in a little over two hours, and I wasn’t fishing with the intensity that a match angler might. The sun climbed ever higher, and not wishing to stress the fish, the net was lifted from the water for a quick photo, and the roach were all released safely. Fishery Manager John Pointon was as surprised as I at the sheer number of quality roach present, and, although I didn’t catch any of the rumoured 2lb fish, the roach provided great sport and were a welcome distraction on a gloriously warm day. I ended my visit with a few hours carp fishing, sadly catching nothing further, but had I carried on roach fishing, I could easily have ended up with well over 100lb of super, silvery roach! My second session of the week was another light lure outing with my new Sonik Sports combo; the Light-Tec rod and AVX reel are perfectly matched and great fun. Just for a change, I tried a speed fishing trial, picking four venues, with the intention of catching and moving on. A fifteen minute walk up the Cauldon Canal saw a number of perch and a tiny pike fall to the tiniest of lures, before three boats in quick succession clouded the waters; time to move on. Fifteen minutes on the road saw me at the River Churnet, and after battling through nettles and thistles, I finally got to the riverbank adjacent to some overhanging trees. First chuck saw the lure sail under the dark cover, and halfway back across the flow, my rod tip was rattled by a smashing little perch of surprising quality. I love tiny watercourses like this, which often throw up a surprise or two, and after taking a few more perch, I decided to move to venue number three, the River Dove. A longer drive of thirty minutes, and I was soon
off across the field to the next swim. The upper reaches of the Dove are amongst my favourite areas to fish, with a combination of quick flowing water, darker, slower holes, and everything in between, it offers super fishing on a budget for many species. A deep hole was selected, the lure dropped at the rod tip whilst I untangled a wind knot, and the resulting rattle saw a mini perch swung to hand; success within seconds, and I hadn’t even cast the lure! A few more casts saw nothing else, so it was on to the final venue of the morning, a club lake on which fish are guaranteed…aren’t they? This lake is but three minutes away from the river, and I know that a dinky lure, dropped between tree roots, is a sure fire way to tempt a few stripy perch… but not today. Try as I might, I just couldn’t find any fish, and as I worked my way around, I despaired of ever finding any! Right at the top of the pool, a small inflow enters the lake, and as the reeds surround this point of entry, a tiny pool is formed by the natural barriers, so I decided to dink my lure in the foot of water which had collected. Bang! A small perch hung itself immediately, followed by around thirty more of the tiny terrors, all from a pool less than a foot deep, a foot wide, and two feet long! It must have been packed with them beneath the covering of surface weed, but at least I’d found them and caught from the final water. So, a canal, two rivers, and a lake, and I’d managed to tempt bites from all four in blisteringly hot conditions with low flow and clear water. I’d spent about an hour driving, thirty minutes walking, and caught somewhere near fifty odd fish in less than four hours, carrying my lightweight kit with me, which just demonstrates how much fun you can have with a light set up, and in just a few hours. It’s the kind of kit you can keep in the car, and drop onto a town centre swim whilst the better half goes shopping, or use for an hour on the way home from work. I know I keep rattling on about it, but if you haven’t tried it yet, light lure and dropshot fishing is perhaps the most fun you can have with your clothes on!

PRE SEASON GEARED UP by Andrew Smith
The Blades’ pre-season campaign stepped up another gear in the last nine days with the Blades taking on F.C. Halifax Town and Grimsby Town F.C. Chris Wilder’s side suffered their first defeat of pre-season at the hands of National League North side Halifax. Goals in the latter stages of the second half at The Shay from Connor Hughes and Richard Peniket highlighted how there was clearly work to do for Wilder and Alan Knill as the season approaches. The disappointing defeat to the semi-professional Halifax Town was soon put behind the side as the Blades defeated newly promoted League Two side Grimsby Town. A smart finish from Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 23rd minute started the Blades
on the road to a 3-1 victory. Calvert-Lewin then played a part in providing Billy Sharp with the opportunity to head home from close range. In the second half, George Long was beaten from range after a speculative effort from Luke Summerfield. This was Long’s first appearance of the preseason campaign, and questions will be asked over his claim to the number one spot after a poor attempt to save Summerfield’s shot. Billy Sharp put the game to bed soon after by finding the

bottom corner on the hour mark. Che Adams made a substitute appearance at Blundell Park in what could be his last game for the Blades. The club turned down a seven-figure offer from Birmingham City on the night of the Halifax fixture, and with Birmingham said to be considering a new offer, and rumoured interest from Newcastle United, it is not known if Adams will be in the squad to face Derby County on Wednesday night.

PREPARATIONS GOING WELL, SAYS BROADFOOT Rotherham United defender Kirk Broadfoot says he and his Rotherham United teammates are edging closer to full fitness ahead of the kick off of the 2016/17 campaign. The Millers are well into their pre-season calendar now having enjoyed a trip to Poland on top of outings against Parkgate and Sunderland on home soil and the former Rangers defender is happy with how things are progressing. “I don’t think we’re right there but we’re getting there now,” Broadfoot told www.themillers. co.uk.
“I think pre-season is crucial for getting that base for the rest of the season. “At this stage of the season it’s not really about getting results, it’s about getting minutes under our belts.” Alan Stubbs leads his side to Glanford Park this evening where they will face another test against Scunthorpe United and Broadfoot admits the game time has been beneficial in adapting to the new manager’s philosophies. “It’s also good for getting the style of play that we want to play and you’ve seen that the manager has
given us a different style and its all about getting to learn that and the players getting to know it,” he continued. “It’s been a hard few days with Spurs on Thursday away in London and then we travelled up and played against a good Sunderland side and its good to get two hard 90 minutes into the legs. “It’s been different and as I say there’s a different style of play and different training so it’s been very good. He’s easy to work with as well and that always helps.”
Luke McCullough says that he cannot wait to return to first team action following the signing of his new three year contract extension with the club. The Northern Ireland international spoke exclusively to doncasterroversfc.co.uk about a new chapter at Keepmoat Stadium. “The gaffer mentioned it to me in the off season about singing a new contract. It was always going to get done, and now its finally done I’m excited about being part of what’s going to happen obviously this season and hopefully leading on to more than that after,” he said. “I’ll be involved tomorrow night (at York City) and hopefully get some minutes. “I was actually supposed to be involved on Saturday but obviously that got called off due to the injuries but I’ll be involved tomorrow night and I just want to get started now and get back on the pitch. “The manager has obviously put his trust in me and wants to keep me here for another few seasons so it (performing well at the end of the 15/16 season) did me no harm.” McCullough arrived in South Yorkshire in 2013 and has made nearly 100 appearances in the red and white hoops despite being just 22 years of age. “I think I’ve improved massively.
Obviously I was quite young when I first came and I was still learning the game but I’ve improved heaps and bounds and I really want to influence the team more rather than just concentrate on myself which is what I did when I first came,” he said. “I do feel like I’m one of the mature ones maybe – I certainly look mature! I definitely think I’m more senior now than when I came and I can help the younger players too. “To be fair they (the new signings) have all settled in really quickly. I came back a bit later and the new lads had already settled in already so there was no problem there.” The Portadown-born midfielder has progressed all the way through the Northern Ireland youth ranks to the senior side and was part of
the 23 man squad that was edged out in the last 16 of Euro 2016 by Wales. “It was unbelievable just to be a part of it all,” he said. “Obviously I didn’t get on the pitch but to be on the inside and be part of the whole experience was unbelievable. “International football is different so I can tell them about things and different things that happened and everything was on a bigger scale and grander but I just want to concentrate on being back here and helping Doncaster. “Seeing the fans was unbelievable and it gave you inspiration. The lads got a massive kick off seeing them and the locals and other countries said that our fans were the best and I think we all agreed with that and it gave us a massive lift.”
EAGER TO RETURN
HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION Another positive step was the verdict of Carlos Carvalhal following the 4-0 win over CD Nacional in Portugal on Sunday evening. The Owls were comfortable throughout the friendly fixture and the head coach reflected on a job well done at the Estadio Municipal. He told swfc.co.uk: “There were more positives that I saw tonight, much more than negatives. “We are on the road in this process and I am happy with where we are. “We are scoring goals and we have only taken one goal, which was in the last minute against Alfreton. “We are playing well, we are compact and I am pleased to see Steven Fletcher score his first goal for us. “But to me it does not matter who scores the goals as long as we are doing things the correct way.” On the other side of the coin, Carvalhal saw Sam Hutchinson and Jack Hunt withdrawn in

the first half but is confident that both players will not spend too much time on the treatment table. He said: “Sam and Jack came off early and they will not play tomorrow but I am
BOYS TO MEN Academy manager Dean Ramsdale has highlighted the benefits his quintet of youngsters will gain from the first team’s training camp in Portugal. Sean Clare, George Hirst, Jack Lee, Connor O’Grady and Jack Stobbs were each on the plane across Europe to train and work with their senior counterparts on a daily basis. And Ramsdale, speaking exclusively to swfc.co.uk, says the experience will only hasten their development: “These boys have impressed for some time and the opportunity they have in Portugal is fantastic. “Obviously they have a lot to learn but they will pick up so much knowledge by training and being around the senior players on a daily basis “Being in the first team environment for one week is like
confident they will be back to the training next week. “But all the players who started today will not play tomorrow, absolutely sure.”
three months with the Under18s.” The academy chief also echoed the thoughts of Carlos Carvalhal earlier this week, when the head coach insisted the talented crop of young Owls were on the tour for their ability, not to make up the numbers. He continued: “Carlos and Lee Bullen have kept their eyes on this group for some time. “For us as an academy, to have five lads out with the first team is really pleasing, and as Carlos said, they are there based on their ability. “Carlos sits on our technical board, he knows the ins and outs of the academy and he has already shown that age is not an issue as Joe Wildsmith played 14 games for the first team last season. “The current lads can see what can be achieved and now they must continue the good things they are doing and adding these new experiences to their game. “The shoots are coming through and now the boys have to become men for the next part of their pathway.”
