CALL FOR EXHIBITORS AT ANNUAL SHEFFIELD FAYRE Can you boast the tastiest cakes, supreme beans or the finest flower arrangements? Now in its 15th year, Sheffield Fayre will take place on Monday 29 August in Norfolk Heritage Park. And organisers from the Sheffield Fayre team are calling for people from across the city and beyond to showcase their finest produce in the horticultural show. Sheffield Fayre is being run in conjunction with the National Fairground
Archive at the University of Sheffield, and the Friends of Norfolk Heritage Park. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “I know that so many people in Sheffield: The Outdoor City grow vegetables, arrange flowers or are keen bakers, brewers or jammakers. So why not show off your wares and be in with a chance of winning a prize at Sheffield Fayre? “There really is something
for all the family, from the ever-popular horticultural show through to fairground rides, live performances, a fun dog show, birds of prey displays and vintage cars. “And of course Sheffield Fayre is once again taking place in the beautiful Norfolk Heritage Park, which is a great place to spend a Bank Holiday with fantastic views over the city centre.” As well as a fairground scale model tent and archives exhibition, there will also be sideshows,
TV costume characters, a great selection of craft stalls, children’s rides, food and drink outlets and a bar. Live attractions are set to include the fun RSPCA dog show, wood craft demonstrations, Sheffield Kite Flyers, music and dancing. Entries are being accepted up until 5pm on Wednesday 24 August for the horticultural show, with classes including photography, flower arranging, honey, cakes, bread, pot plants, Bonsai,
vegetables, wine and crafts. Junior classes include needlecraft, art, photography, baking and the creation of a miniature garden. All winners will be announced at 5pm on Monday 29 August, with the horticultural show closing at 5.30pm. For the full horticultural schedule and further details, visit the Sheffield City Council website at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ sheffieldfayre or call 0114 2736681. CENTRE’S HEARTFELT APPEAL TO SUPPORT CHILDREN’S HOSPICE Meadowhall has unveiled a heart-warming piece of art in the Centre to support its charity of the year, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. As part of the successful 25th Anniversary Hearts that helped mark the Centre’s birthday milestone last year, Meadowhall has had another heart made. This will be the 13th in the collection to celebrate their nominated charity of the year. This 5ft, 3D heart has a new design to the others, in the style of a giant money collection box. This heart will be situated inside Meadowhall so that shoppers can show their support and give generously to the Sheffield-based children’s hospice. The new-look heart is currently based outside the
Fat Face store on the High Street where thousands of shoppers pass by every day. The overall design features photographs of Bluebell Wood children and was created with the help of professional artist Jodie Silverman. Centre Director Darren Pearce said: “I think this is a wonderful legacy from the 25th anniversary celebrations where we had an opportunity to add another new heart to our original collection. And knowing that this one can help us to continue to raise funds for Bluebell Wood for the duration of our two year partnership, makes it even more special.”
Claire Rintoul, chief executive of Bluebell Wood, added: “I love this heart because it is inspired by the children at Bluebell Wood, who motivate and inspire us in our work every single day. It was a fantastic idea to theme it in the style of a money collection box and it’s certainly eye-catching. We hope that everyone who sees this amazing piece of art will be moved to make a donation, however small. Every penny received makes a huge difference to the families we support across South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, North Derbyshire and North Lincolnshire.”

Pirate Thursdays Pirate Thursdays are a FREE summer holiday event in central Sheffield run by social enterprise River Stewardship Company where parents can bring their children for a few hours (11am-2pm) of pirate-themed fun and activities. Pirate fancy dress is encouraged and we hope t’see ya therrr! Dates include 18th and 25th August 2016! Nature Photography Thursday 25th August - 10am-12noon organised by Wild at Heart, part of Sheffield Wildlife Trust A visit to Beauchief Abbey. There are so many changes happening at the moment. No one seems sure what will happen after the Brexit vote. The city has opted for a devolution package so next year we’ll have an elected Mayor but what else does it mean for us? A BANK HOLIDAY FAMILY FUN DAY TO MAKE ALL THE KIDS HAPPY! On Bank Holiday Monday you and your family can enjoy a great day out while supporting Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The New Inn’s Family Fun Day is much more than the usual offering; it will include not only a bouncy castle and face painting but also a classic car show, stalls full of locally produced food, an outside bar from Bradfield Brewery, live entertainment, food all day and many more activities. Already scheduled are a tombola stall, an off-the-rails boutique selling bags, shoes and jewellery, kiddies rides and an all day barbeque. The fun starts at midday on Monday 29th August and is the idea of licensees Paul and Angie, who took over the New Inn at Easter. They see the New Inn taking shape as the hub of the community and are asking for your help. On 20th September
they are hosting a meeting at the New Inn, with one free welcome drink per visitor, where they will ask for your feedback on what the community wants from their local. But first it’s a day of fun for all the family so make a
date in your diary for Bank Holiday Monday and don’t forget that families from throughout The Mercury region are welcome. It promises to be fantastic entertainment for all the family and will benefit The Childrens.
The New Inn is just along from the Children’s Farm at Graves Park, Norton so it’s easy to find. The New Inn Hemsworth Road Sheffield S8 8LN www.newinnsheffield.com
THE STRADA IN THE SQUARE Words by Marc Cooper Last Saturday we visited Strada in Leopold Square to sample some authentic Italian Cuisine in the heart of Sheffield. The restaurant has recently undergone a contemporary refurbishment crowned with an al fresco dining area, where the historic architecture of Leopold Square gives a genuinely continental setting to eat or relax with a drink. However the typical British summer weather forced us take a table inside in the modern open-plan interior. We started the evening with a glass of proscecco whilst we looked over the varied menu covering pizza, pasta, salads, fish
and grills, opting for the tomato bruschetta and antipasti to start. The impeccibly presented Antipasti consisted of prosciutto di parma, spianata piccante, salami napoli, mortadella, baby mozzarella, semi-dried tomatoes, avocado, bread and olives providing plenty of colour and a real taste of Italy. For the main course we selected Creamy Chicken Casarecce which is pan-roasted chicken in a mushroom and tarragon sauce and Penne Carbonara. Both dishes provided modern twists on classic Italian dishes with portion sizes capable of filling at least three of the four tenors. The Italians are as famous for their warm reception as they are their sumptuous dishes and Strada doesn’t disappoint in backing up their food with great customer service. The menu changes throughout the year so there will be always something new to try at Strada even if it becomes your regular Italian in Sheffield, which I personal recommend that it does. ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST VOICES ARRIVES AT SHEFFIELD ARENA One of the world’s great voices, Andrea Bocelli returns to the UK & Ireland celebrating the greatest movie songs of all time, stopping off at Sheffield Arena on Friday 23rd September 2016. Tickets are now on general sale online at www. sheffieldarena.co.uk. Tickets purchased online or by phone are priced £49.50 - £132 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena box office are priced £47.25 - £126 including booking fee. Showcasing his latest, epic album ‘Cinema,’ the tour will feature stunning pieces from the classic cinema soundtracks along with arias and duets from the most legendary operas and other classic pieces from the artist’s repertoire. ‘Cinema’ made history in the UK by reaching Number 3 in the Official Charts, crowning Bocelli as the only classical artist to achieve ten Top 10 albums. Bocelli reunited with his musical dream team for the recording - including David Foster, Humberto Gatica and Tony Renis who worked together on the trailblazing success of Bocelli’s ‘Amore.’ Together, they explored theme songs featured in films such as “Doctor Zhivago”, “Love Story”, “The Godfather”, “Life is Beautiful”, “Gladiator”, “The Postman”, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and many more, as well as popular songs from stage musicals, immortalised by their film versions, such as “West Side Story” and “Evita.” A duet with pop superstar Ariana Grande on ‘E Piu Ti Penso’ from ‘Once Upon A Time In America’ completed the stellar line up. From Ennio Morricone to Leonard Bernstein, these songs represent modern classics and over 4 nights, Bocelli will transport audiences to these epic film sets, as well as performing some of his best-loved songs. Andrea says, “It has been a dream of mine for decades to bring to life great film soundtracks,” says Bocelli, “They are an artistic treasure trove and a soundtrack to many peoples lives, experiences and precious memories. Bringing the ‘Cinema’ album to live concert audiences is an opportunity I could not miss.”
The biggest selling solo classical artist of all time, Bocelli has performed for four U.S. presidents, two popes and the royal family, as well as at ceremonies for the Olympic Games and the World Cup. He has been praised by such luminaries as Luciano Pavarotti, Franco Corelli, Zubin Mehta, Jose Carreras, Lorin Maazel, Renee Fleming and Celine Dion, who once introduced him by saying: “I heard someone say that if God had a singing voice, he would sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli.” Andrea Bocelli has sold over 80 million albums around the world, his 1999 Sacred Arias album has sold over 5 million copies, making it the best selling classical recording of all time. His pop career, including the much loved Time To Say Goodbye, a duet with Sarah Brightman that reached Number 1 in charts around the world in 1998, may have drawn millions in, but Bocelli has always enthusiastically shared his classical calling. Tickets are now on general sale , available in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk.

1 IN 5 PARENTS ADMIT TO USING MOTORCYCLES WANTED MOBILE PHONES WHILE DRIVING DEAD OR ALIVE
OSV Ltd, a leading vehicle leasing provider, today revealed that 21% of parents use their mobile phone while driving with their children in the car. It is well known that using a mobile phone while driving is not only highly distracting, but also highly dangerous. However, this doesn’t stop one in five parents who are putting their children at risk by using their phone to text or call while driving. Mobile phone use causes a lapse in concentration and even the slightest lapse in driver concentration could result in a crash. In fact, statistics show that using a mobile phone while driving means that you’re four times more likely to crash than those that do not use their mobile phone while behind the wheel. In statistics released by the Department for
Transport, out of 88 deaths that were caused by incar distractions, 17 were due to mobile phone use, a higher death rate than any other in-car cause. The study by OSV Ltd, which surveyed over 1,000 drivers, revealed that Dad’s were more likely to use their phone than Mum’s, with twenty eight percent and fifteen percent making the confession respectively. The survey also asked parents to name the thing that distracted them most when they were behind the wheel. Sixty per cent of parents explained that children or other passengers were the biggest driver distraction and only 17% cited mobile phones. But, the stats speak for themselves. Parents may think that children or other passengers are the biggest distraction, but the deadliest distraction is in fact the mobile phone.
Debbie Kirkley, Co-Founder of vehicle leasing company OSV Ltd is calling for parents to practice what they preach and stop using mobile phones when behind the wheel. Debbie explains: “Parents are setting a terrible example to their children when they use their mobile phone while driving.” “Children are regularly told off for using technology at inappropriate times, or told not to use technology in certain situations. The best way to teach your children that it is dangerous to use a mobile phone when driving is to set a good example and not use your own mobile phone while you are behind the wheel.” “Taking your eyes off the road to read a text or make a quick call can be fatal and it is the duty of parents to behave responsibly.”
WARNING AFTER ‘HARROWING’ INCIDENTS SEE 3 DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS
incidents, which all took place in Peterborough. But as temperatures look set to remain high throughout August, the RSPCA has renewed its calls for drivers to be aware of the fatal effects heat can have on dogs. The animal charity says fatalities can occur as a result of overheating, even on days when it might not feel particularly warm. It highlights that temperatures inside vehicles can quickly rise above those outside in as short a time as an hour. “There is no good reason to bring your dog out in your car in warm weather and leave it while you go to do your shopping, doctor’s appointment, or visit the pub,” Inspector Stubbs said. In separate statistics, the RSPCA revealed that it has seen a spike in call-outs relating to dogs in hot cars. It received 3,000 more calls concerning heat exposure in dogs last year compared to five years ago. According to the figures, there was a peak in 2014, when the RSPCA had to deal with 10,229 reports of such incidents. Last month, dog lover Jess Ritchie filmed herself
overheating in a car in a bid to raise awareness of the dangers of high temperatures. After sharing the footage on social media, it was viewed more than 6,000 times right around the world.
Dog owners have been warned over the dangers of leaving their animals in hot cars after three died in separate incidents last month. During a two-day heatwave in July, officers from the RSPCA were called to 106 reports of pets left in cars, conservatories and caravans. In three of the call-outs, rescue teams arrived too late and the animals all died as temperatures rose to unbearable levels. Making an emotional statement, RSPCA inspector Justin Stubbs described the devastating toll that witnessing the events had taken on him. “To witness a dead dog in a hot car is particularly harrowing,” he said. “When you go home at night, it is hard to put out of your mind that they would have slowly stifled to death, gasping for air. “When a dog is left in a car for a prolonged period of time their skin blisters and they suffocate. It’s hard to think of anything worse.” Police are now said to be investigating the

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
Another week of swings and roundabouts, one session when I caught, and one when I didn’t… I popped over to my favourite Cheshire venue to try and catch a carp or two. Gawsworth Fisheries is a complex of six pools, and Wood Pool contains carp to over 25lb, with some catfish approaching 40lb, so is well worth the day ticket money. I’m not a fan of fishing during the school holidays, as many of the park lakes I usually target become overrun with youngsters who are more interested in swimming or chucking stuff in, so Gawsworth is a bit of a quiet retreat when other lakes are busier than normal. I set up right at the bottom of the lake, at the furthest point from the car park, and also the end of the water into which the wind was pushing. As on many lakes, the island swims get battered, as does the swim which is most convenient to the parking area, so I deliberately avoided both to try and sneak a fish elsewhere. As I walked onto the lake, the overnight boys hadn’t caught, neither had the angler who had arrived before me, so I headed away from them to try my luck. I was also conducting an experiment; on pressured day ticket venues, it is almost impossible to tell how much bait has gone into the water prior to your arrival, so I contented myself with around a kilo of particle blend, and no more than two handfuls of Mainline Baits Cell, to see if I could catch over someone else’s bait. The peg I’d chosen showed evidence of being occupied recently, perhaps an overnight angler had just left as the grass was flattened, and there was a tiny amount of food items on the ground, just enough to
make me think that attractors had already been introduced over the preceding hours. I set up my rods, baited with a single Cell boilie, and dropped one in the water in front of me, and one against the treeline on the far bank; both margin traps, and over the near rod I spread a small amount of particle, and over the other, a few boilies were sticked out. Simple tactics, with both baits mounted on Vardis Gripper hooks, pinned down with tungsten tubing, and tied with a short coated braid hook link; easy. Settled, I looked around to see if anyone else was catching, but it didn’t seem that much was happening across the lake. I had seen a few carp, tentatively sucking at mixers, but they weren’t feeding confidently, so I stuck at it, and watched intently to see if I could spot any fish near my baits. For ten hours, nothing happened, then I started to see a few patches of fizzing bubbles which could have indicated carp, and within five minutes of spotting the telltale signs, I had a screaming take on the far bank rod which resulted in a scraper double. Five more minutes, and a second fish was lost on the near bank rod after cleaning out my second rod despite being back leaded! Eventually sorting out the mess, I put the rods back on the spots, and an hour later had a second double figure carp on the mat to finish the session. As I left, I asked other anglers if they had caught, and was peevishly pleased to discover that of all the anglers on the lake, I was the only one who had caught carp and I’d used less than a quid’s worth of bait! Result! My second visit was to another Cheshire venue, Coole Acres Fishery, and one on which I struggle having visited three times previously for just one fish. It’s not the venue, it’s me, I just don’t ‘get it’ on there, so I spent an hour looking for fish without success, before choosing to set up
on a peg giving access to a likely margin, and a bridge which offered a potential patrol route. As usual, I enquired of other anglers what they had caught; one lad had caught a trio of fish, the other had blanked over a 48 hour period, so I opted to fish one rod over plenty of bait, and the other over very little to hedge my bets. Chatting to nearby anglers, it became apparent that they knew who I was as a result of my writings for Carp-Talk magazine, and I can’t pretend it isn’t nice to realise that someone does read what I spend hours over each week! It was very pleasant to while away a few hours in friendly discussion; it’s always nice to find that people are interested in what I do, and it’s also a pleasure to hear what they do, where they fish, and how they do it. I’m always up for learning from others, so it passed the time as we all waited for the carp to make an appearance… The end of this particular session finished after twelve hours of absolute silence for me, not a twitch, not a bleep, and the only excitement came as I nodded off, and a duck swam through the line at the rod tip; that was it... What was more disappointing is that other anglers had caught,
indeed I had the pleasure of photographing a lovely near 20lb common for the angler next to me, but try as I might, this place really has me scratching my head! So this week really has been one of ups and downs, one minute I can catch, the next I’m struggling, but I suppose that’s why it’s called ‘fishing’ and not ‘catching’. Either way, I’ll be back out again next week to try and do it all again!

IZZY BROWN SIGNS FOR MILLERS Rotherham United manager Alan Stubbs admits he is excited at the prospect of working with new loan signing Izzy Brown after the Chelsea youngster put pen-to-paper on a deal until the end of the season. The Millers boss bolstered his attacking ranks with the signing of the 19-year-old on Monday afternoon and Stubbs is keen to get the England starlet involved, who he says is a marquee signing for the club. “We’re really looking forward to him being here and I think he’s going to give us a real threat in the forward areas in terms of creating and being a goal threat and it’s one that we’re all excited about,” Stubbs told www.themillers.co.uk. “He is a very exciting player. He went to Chelsea for a lot of money a few years ago and they’ve got
big aspirations for him and I think it’s a feather in the club’s cap the fact that Chelsea have loaned us one of their prestigious talents and one that they have really high hopes for.” The Peterborough-born forward has graced the AESSEAL New York Stadium previously in England colours but Stubbs was keen to emphasise his attributes to Millers fans that may not have seen him in action. “He’s quick and he’ll give defenders problems,” he continued. “Whenever you have real pace it’s always a problem for defenders and its something they’re scared of and we’re hoping that when he comes here he will be one that puts opposition defenders on the back foot. “Predominantly he is a wide player, he has played off the striker or in that position on a few occasions but he is more of a wide man. “He’s very direct and very positive when he gets in oneversus-one positions and we know he’s scored goals.”

WE WON’T GET DISHEARTENED - STUBBS Rotherham United boss Alan Stubbs has called on his side not to get disheartened by following their 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa. Rudy Gestede’s first half double put Roberto Di Matteo’s men in charge at the interval before Jack Grealish added a third late in the game to inflict Rotherham’s first league defeat of the campaign. Despite the unflattering nature of the scoreline at Villa Park, Stubbs believed his side gave as good as
FERGUSON POST CRAWLEY Manager pleased to be on the board but stresses the need for 90 minute performance. Darren Ferguson admitted that he would have to settle for a point after a mixed performance from his side earned a 1-1 draw at home to Crawley Town on Saturday. Captain James Coppinger struck early in a much improved second half but the hosts couldn’t force a winner. “You’re never happy with a point at home but the way the game went I suppose I’ll have to be; especially after the first half,” said Ferguson.

they got for large periods of the clash in the West Midlands. “I thought the players stuck at it and we are not going to get too downhearted and we have to move on very quickly to the next game,” Stubbs stated. “It sometimes just comes down to having an awareness of what is around you when you are receiving the ball and having the confidence of coming to big grounds and getting on the ball. “We need to look to be positive where sometimes there is an urge to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible. We got ourselves into some good positions today but we just did not deliver on the final ball.” The Millers were more than a
match for Di Matteo’s men in the early stages of the game and arguably Gestede’s opener on 21 minutes, which came from the breakdown of a Rotherham attack, came against the run of the play- to the disappointment of the Millers boss. “We are always disappointed when we lose,” Stubbs added. “I thought up until the first goal we were in the game but we probably needed to show a little more belief, when we had the ball. The first goal was disappointing. “It came from an unforced error where there was not a lot of pressure and to be honest, I think we could have done better on the second one. “We need to be resolute and I
have to say when you see the goals, we haven’t been cut open in any of them. We have contributed to them ourselves significantly and that needs to be addressed.” The Millers were dealt a blow prior to kick-off when Scottish international Kirk Broadfoot was ruled out because of injury as youngster Dominic Ball was handed his debut at the heart of the Rotherham rearguard just 24 hours after putting pen to paper with the Millers. “I think not having Broady there was a blow for us,” Stubbs added. “We thought he was going to be ok for us. He was close, that’s why he travelled.”
“It was a great start to the second half with Copps’ goal, he puts us back in the game and we had opportunities to go and win it but we didn’t. “Performance-wise the second half was better but the first half was a difficult one to describe, it lacked energy and tempo which is most unlike one of my teams.” Attention now turns to a Tuesday evening encounter against Cambridge United with Rovers still looking to record their first win of the season amid high expectations. “The players are giving me a raw deal if they’re going to play like that in the first half so we need more of a performance – like it was for the second half – for the full game,” Ferguson continued. “That’s something that hopefully we get on Tuesday because that will be a tough game against a good team, a very good team so we need to perform better in that and everyone would say that. “We have to handle the expectations at home, I really think that. “We go on the positives and it’s a far better second half after what I said to them at half time. We’ve got a first point and we need to obviously improve and we will. I can accept mistakes by players and you have to as a manager but I won’t accept the lack of tempo and energy in the first half.”
LEAGUE TWO IS TOUGH
really proud of and - touch wood - I’ll get there with no problems,” he said. “It’s an honour for me to play for this football club and to be the longest serving player and to reach 500 games at any club is a mean feat. “The expectation of the fans is that we’re a League 1 / Championship club and not a League 2 club and it’s going to be difficult for players who think otherwise. “Players can’t step on to the pitch and expect it to happen, this division isn’t like this and the manager and fans won’t accept it and neither will the players. We need to demand more from each other and get better performances.” Every team in League Two has dropped points already after two games, therefore showing just how competitive the division is, in the eyes of Coppinger. “I think this division is competitive and any team can beat any team on any given day,” he said. “We’re starting to realise that, you understand that it’s not going to be a walk in the park, you can’t just turn up and think you’re going to win games. “The lads are really good lads, they want to learn, they want to listen. Although you do that Monday-Friday, Saturday is when it counts and it’s a steep learning curve. As long as they keep doing things consistently then I think they’ll be fine.”
Captain James Coppinger reminds everyone that League Two is tough. Goalscorer James Coppinger alluded to the fact that reality may have bitten some of his teammates as Rovers continue their search for a win. The 35 year old captain equalised James Collins’ opener against Crawley Town at the weekend, with a well worked set piece routine devised on the training ground, to earn a point. “Obviously it was a corner that we’d worked on, I’d scored two in training so there was a bit of pressure so I was delighted that it worked and it got us back in the game,” he said. “I thought we warranted three points for our second half performance, the tempo in the second half was a lot better and we passed the ball a lot better. “Everything was lacking first half and we couldn’t put our finger on it, he (manager Darren Ferguson) demanded that we came out second half and put on a performance for the fans, for him and for ourselves. “This season it’s all about us and the expectation levels are going to be a lot different to last season. We’re expected to win games – especially at home – and the players that are playing are expected to deal with that.” Coppinger has now scored for Rovers in 12 consecutive seasons and has made 495 appearances since signing for the club in the summer of 2004. “I’m aware of the 500 and it’s a big milestone, something I’m

BLADES NEWS2016/17 LATE SHARP GOAL EARNS DRAW The Blades picked up a first point of the season thanks to Billy Sharp’s late goal. The captain struck home a Chris Hussey free-kick with nine minutes to go after Andy Cannon had given Rochdale a first half lead. For a third consecutive game, Wilder named an unchanged starting line-up. New loanee Chapman, signed from Middlesbrough, was amongst the substitutes. Rochdale’s team included former McGahey and MendezLaing. The early battles were even, and so were the chances. Lillis smothered after a neat move involving Fleck, Duffy and Done and O’Connell blocked from McDermott. Long range efforts from Duffy and Cannon also came to nothing. The first serious chance arrived on 15 minutes and a fortunate ricochet saw the ball drop invitingly for Henderson but Long was quickly off his line to make an impressive save. Bizarrely, Fleck was
booked for a follow through on a Rochdale player when he was fouled - United won the free-kick...work that out! Duffy and Cannon both dragged shots wide as the match remained in the balance. As half-time approached, though, Rochdale claimed an advantage. Henderson’s shot from the edge of the box, possibly deflected, spun away from Long’s grasp and CANNON reacted first to round the goalkeeper and slot home at the Kop end. Early in the second half the sides exchanged chances from crosses but McGahey for the visitors and Done for the Blades were off target. Just before the hour Chapman was introduced for his debut and the Blades were now on top, trying to force a leveller. On 65 minutes, from Duffy’s deep cross, Clarke, at full stretch, headed just wide and then a cross from Sharp was too high for the striker. Rochdale, expectedly, were happy to slow down the action at
every opportunity but they were stung on 81 minutes, following Canavan’s foul. Hussey swung in a free-kick from the right and as the visitors appealed for offside, SHARP slotted into the top corner. Appeals for a penalty in front of the Kop, as Clarke and McGahey clashed, were waved away and Rochdale had a chance when Andrew headed wide a McNulty cross. Late on, Basham tried to thread a ball through to Sharp but Lillis was quickly off his line and three minutes of added
time failed to herald another chance.
Blades: Long, Brayford, Hussey, Fleck, O’Connell, Basham, Sharp, Done (Chapman 59), Wilson, Duffy (Scougall 68), Clarke. Subs: McNulty, Ramsdale, Wright, Coutts, Freeman. Rochdale: Lillis, Rafferty, McNulty, Canavan, McGahey, Andrew, MendezLaing (Odelusi 68), McDermott, Allen, Cannon (Camps 78), Henderson.
WILDER’S ROCHDALE VERDICT Chris Wilder was encouraged by the character his players showed in Saturday’s stalemate with Rochdale at Bramall Lane. Despite admitting it was below par performance from his side for much of the contest against Keith Hill’s Dale, Wilder felt the Blades deserved at least a share of the spoils following an improved second-half showing, as Billy Sharp cancelled on Andrew Cannon’s first-half opener. Speaking in the aftermath of the contest, Wilder remarked: “We weren’t as good as we have been previously, but we were bright for the first 20 minutes until Rochdale got more into the game.
“Rochdale’s shape meant they had a bit more of the ball in the middle of the park and we didn’t move the ball into wide areas quick enough. “Then they score and that changes the atmosphere of the crowd and in the end we had to dig ourselves out of a hole and hopefully those battling qualities we have demonstrated gives everyone a belief.” The Blades boss added: “It was a difficult afternoon, but let’s give the fans some credit, it was a bit flat and just before we got the equaliser they made a genuine attempt to lift the team and after Billy’s goal they really got behind us as we chased a second. “We had to start somewhere, I’m not going to say it was the best performance or the best point we will ever get, but it’s start and if we’re been greedy, perhaps we could have snatched a winner.”
CHAPMAN JOINS ON LOAN WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
Chris Wilder has made his eighth signing since becoming Sheffield United manager. Middlesbrough youngster Harry Chapman joins the Blades on a seasonlong loan. The 18year-old winger was plunged straight into Wilder’s match-day squad for the draw against Rochdale and made his debut in the 59th minute with the Blades hunting for an equaliser. The England Under-18 international joined Barnsley FC on loan in February and featured 14 times for the Tykes, including the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final and both legs of their play-off semi-final against Walsall. After securing Chapman’s services, Wilder said: “Harry is a highlyrated wide player with plenty of ability and I’m sure he’s
going to excite our supporters.” Chapman is brought in to replace the attacking threat that Che Adams provided before his move to Birmingham City. He was used by Barnsley mainly as an impact substitution, Wilder will hope he can provide the dynamism that the attack has missed so far this season. Discussing the transfer market earlier this week, Wilder said: “I’ve been delighted with the additions that we’ve made, but we still need strength in depth.” The Blades have been strongly linked with Derby County goalkeeper, Lee Grant, who is linked with a loan move to Bramall Lane. With Mark Howard having left in the summer and George Long’s disappointing displays between the sticks,
Wilder will hope a new goalkeeping addition will tighten up the defence. Wilder also revealed the positions in which he’s looking to strengthen before
the window shuts, he admitted after the Rochdale game that the Blades are in the market for a centre midfielder, a forward, a centre back and a goalkeeper.

OWLS NEWS2016/17 OWLS SIGN DAVID JONES Wednesday have signed David Jones from Premier League side Burnley for an undisclosed fee. The 31-year-old joins with a rich pedigree having represented four teams in the Premier League – Derby, Wolves, Wigan and Burnley. In addition, Jones has four second tier promotions under the belt – second only to strike star Kevin Phillips - and made 41 league appearances for the Clarets last season in their march to the Championship title. Jones spent his formative years with Premier League giants Manchester United from the age of ten, and left just over a decade later after loan stints with Preston North End and Dutch side NEC Nijmegen. A £1m move to Derby County followed and the
midfield man helped the Rams win promotion to the top tier. A successful move to Wolves came next, together with another promotion, before Jones switched to the top flight with Wigan. The Southport product
then signed for Burnley, with whom he has two Premier League promotions to his name. In total, Jones has made 297 starts through his career to date. He will wear shirt number three for the Owls.
FERNANDO FORESTIERI STATEMENT Following the events of last weekend, I would now like to make my position 100% clear to hopefully allow a line to be drawn beneath this situation. I accept my actions were unprofessional and unacceptable and to that end, I apologised sincerely to my team mates, the head coach and all the coaching staff first thing on Monday morning. I also apologised to our fantastic supporters, who have been so kind to me since I arrived at Sheffield Wednesday. I would now like to also apologise to our chairman. I was wrong and did not show him the respect he deserves. He has shown full support throughout the last few days, for which I offer
my genuine gratitude. There have been misunderstandings but I am very pleased to say that this situation is now resolved. I can only repeat that never once did I even consider leaving Sheffield Wednesday, and I am sorry if anyone ever thought that was the case. If I could turn back the clock I would but I cannot. Sometimes in life you have to make mistakes so you can learn from them. All I can do is ask for forgiveness from everyone who has been so supportive towards
myself and my family during my very happy time at Hillsborough so far. My heart is with Sheffield Wednesday and I now wish to put these events behind me, concentrate completely on my football and help this wonderful club move towards the success we all desire.
