FINES RAISED IN CITYWIDE CRACKDOWN ON WASTE Those who fly tip or drop litter in Sheffield are set to be hit with increased penalty charges as the city council continues its drive to keep our city clean. This comes after a total of 27 people were taken to Sheffield Magistrates Court last Thursday, 11 August, and fined a total of more than £6,500 for dropping litter on the city’s streets. It has now been
announced that, in new charges being introduced by Sheffield City Council, the Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) amount for dropping litter is set to be increased to £80 from £75, with the discount for early payment also being removed. Furthermore, new powers have been adopted which enable officers to deal with those caught fly-tipping by means of a Fixed
Penalty Notice (FPN). In suitable cases, offenders will be given an option to pay £400 or be taken to court. The amount is reduced to £300 if paid within 10 days. However, more serious cases of fly-tipping will still be subject to a prosecution. If fly-tipping cases go to the Crown Court, this can mean prison and an unlimited fine. These new fees and
charges for litter are set to be introduced from Thursday, 1 September. Last week, Sheffield City Council’s Environmental Protection Service brought 27 cases to magistrates court after each of the people concerned was offered the opportunity to pay a FPN for dropping litter. As they all declined to pay the fixed penalty, they were fined by the courts, as well as being
told to pay the council’s costs and a victim surcharge. In total, the 27 people were ordered to pay out a total of £6,590. Environmental enforcement officers have issued nearly 1,100 FPNs to litter louts across the city in the last year. Most of these offenders admitted the offence and paid the fixed penalty. However, those that did not pay the fixed penalty have been prosecuted and Sheffield City Council has prosecuted 218 offenders in the last 12 months. This is an average of more than four people a week.

SUPERCARS ALL REVVED UP AT MEADOWHALL TO HELP BLUEBELL WOOD CHILDREN’S HOSPICE A stunning line up of luxury supercars descended on Meadowhall ahead of a four-wheel fundraiser for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. Jack Kirsopp (aged 10) and mum, Vicky, from Bluebell Wood were part of the special preview that saw a selection of superb cars such as Lamborghinis and Porsches, line up to promote the charity’s Supercar Experience on Saturday September 3, from 10am until 3pm. A must for any “petrol head” or anyone who wants a day out with a difference, the Supercar Experience promises hours of rev-roaring action, courtesy
of members of the ‘Supercar Driver’ club and the Sporting Bears. The owners will be offering to take people for an unforgettable 'dream ride', or have a photograph taken with their prized possession, in exchange for a donation to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. Furthermore, JCT600, John Holland Car Sales and Sytner BMW Sheffield will also be in attendance with a mouth-watering range of supercars to get up close and personal with. Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice is Meadowhall’s chosen charity for 2016/2017 and cares for children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy and a range of complex medical needs, and their families. Meadowhall Events Manager, Alex Caley commented: “This is a fantastic event that is really getting people excited. We only had a handful of cars here today and yet we had so many people stopping and
having their photographs taken – on the big day itself there should be more than 50 on display!” Julie Hampson, Corporate Volunteer for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, said: “You don’t get to see so many supercars all in one place very often, let alone have the chance to take a ride in one! Supercar Driver have supported Bluebell Wood for the last five years and raised over £30,000 so we are very thankful for their continued support.” Adam Thorby, director of Supercar Driver, who is helping to organise the day, added: “We are super excited to bring this unique event to Meadowhall in collaboration with Bluebell Wood. Our members are excited to share their cars with everyone and the venue provides something for all the family. The reaction we have had so far is that people can’t wait to get up close to our members fantastic cars, the atmosphere will be brilliant!”

EXTRA TICKETS RELEASED FOR SHEFFIELD ROCKERS BRING ME THE HORIZON’S HUGE COMETOWN SHOW AT THE ARENA The latest home grown band to take to the Sheffield Arena stage are Sheffield rockers Bring Me The Horizon who will perform their biggest hometown gig to date on Sunday 6th November 2016. Extra previously sold out standing tickets have just been released, available in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk. Tickets purchased online or by phone are priced £38.50 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena box office are priced £36.75 including booking fee. Joining Bring Me The Horizon as special guests will be Don Broco & Basement. One of the most ambitious of modern metal bands they have toured relentlessly they have conquered the festival scene and provoked extreme reaction both at home & abroad. BMTH broke out of the metal-core ghetto with their irrepressible tunes, intelligent lyrics and vibrant, untameable spirit bringing in pop fans and alternative kids alike and become the most exhilarating, boundary-smashing
rock band on the planet. The heaviest of bands with a lightness of touch. In a world where too many bands stay safely in their designated lanes, BMTH are busting out of theirs and taking their hardcore fans with them, all the while attracting new listeners. 2015 was a triumphant year for the Sheffield 5-piece with That’s The Spirit entering the UK album chart at #2 and storming the US album chart at #1 as well as scoring a third #1 in Australia. ‘That’s The Spirit’ debuted in the top 10 album charts in 16 countries and went to #1 on the iTunes album charts in 19 countries. The band also stole all the headlines from this year’s Reading & Leeds Festival after giving the standout performance as main support for Metallica on the Main Stage, further cementing their place as the UK’s international breakout-band of the year. BMTH will be making their Sheffield Arena debut on Sunday 6th November 2016 with tickets available in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk.

Later on in the evening, the bar transforms into a club providing high energy entertainment until the early hours. Commenting on the investment, new general manager David Burgess, who is from Sheffield, said: “I’m really excited to be bringing Bar & Beyond to my home town. It’s a unique concept that gives customers the choice between a fun evening with food and a wide choice of drinks, or to stay out and party the night away. There’s nothing like it in Sheffield and I’m confident it will be a massive hit.” The new site joins Chelmsford and Stevenage and is the first Bar & Beyond site acquisition, showing just how successful the concept has become since it was launched by Deltic a year ago.

SHEFFIELD WALKING FESTIVAL 10TH – 18TH SEPT 9 Days 28 walks 1 amazing city We live in the greenest city in the country – I bet there are lots of parts of our city that you’ve never seen. As part of our drive to promote active ageing, we are encouraging as many people as possible to join one of the 28 organised walks taking place during the walking festival. The walks are of varying lengths so there’s bound to be one that suits you. Why not take a Tombstone Tour of gothic cemeteries or a waterside adventure One Way or the Rother? For those who like it tough, there will be an opportunity to cover the whole of the Sheffield Country Walk over five consecutive days, the 15-mile challenge of the Sheffield Round Walk and several dramatic moorland
walks skirting the city borders that overlap with the Peak District. The festival will culminate in a headline walk on Sunday 18 September which will retrace the historic footsteps of the Abbey Brook Mass Trespass, when back in 1932 a group of 200 ramblers gathered to walk over the moors in the North West of Sheffield. Much like its more famous relation the Kinder Mass Tresspass, Abbey Brook was a landmark demonstration which played a major part in enabling access to areas of the country where people can walk freely today. You can find out details at www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk/walk/walkingfestival , from the Central Library, Town Hall or the Tourist Office and, of course, on the Sheffield 50+ website www. sheffield50plus.org.uk and on Sheffield 50+ FaceBook page.

FEELING THE SQUEEZE New research has revealed that across the UK, parents are collectively paying out more than £22 billion in costs just to get their kids on the road. A survey of 1,000 parents carried out by leading car website NFDA Trusted Dealers found that parents are struggling to keep up with the spiralling cost of getting their children motoring, as insurance prices for young drivers have increased by 13 per cent on last year. Figures from the region show more than one third of parents in Yorkshire (32.5%) have installed a company ‘black box’ or dashboard camera in an effort to reduce their child’s insurance costs. One in five (22.8%) have also agreed to a high excess to reduce costs, while more than one third (32.5%) of parents have put their names on their child’s insurance policy to lower payments. Learning to drive now costs the average new driver around £7,000, with insurance and the cost of a car making up the majority of the total and the Bank of Mum and Dad are picking up much of the cost for young motorists, with more than three quarters of parents in Yorkshire (77%) saying they paid for
their child’s driving lessons. One in five (22.8%) also helped their child with a deposit for a car and almost half (48.5%) of parents revealed they pay out for regular maintenance checks, car accessories and cleaning. In addition to helping out with the cost of insuring and maintaining a car, more than two thirds of parents (68.7%) also help their children buy their first car, with one in five parents in Yorkshire (19.2%) prepared to cough up to buy their child a brand new motor. Parents in the West Midlands and London are most likely to splash out and buy their child a new car outright (25%), while parents in Scotland are the most frugal, choosing to buy a used car instead (50%). Neil Addley, Managing Director of NFDA Trusted Dealers, said: “The survey findings show that each year the costs associated with learning to drive rises, putting a strain not only on learners, but also on the Bank of Mum and Dad. Increasing prices means there is often a temptation to scrimp on some things, such as the quality of the car, but this can lead to
high running costs, leaving you out of pocket in the long term. “Trusted Dealers is committed to helping young motorists get on the road and all our listings are competitively priced and adhere to a unique set of standards, our 10 Points of Difference. These safeguards ensure that you get the best quality used vehicle for your kids, at a good price.” “With more and more parents stepping in to help get their children motoring, we have also developed a dedicated section on our site (http://www.trusteddealers.co.uk/category/testing-times/) which is filled with tips and advice from buying your first car, to the best cars for students.” Trusted Dealers is part of the National Franchised Dealer Association (NFDA), the UK’s leading retail motor industry body. The site, which lists cars from the country’s top dealerships, offers complete peace of mind for those buying a used car online.
MORE THAN 20 MILLION CARS SET TO HIT THE ROADS THIS BANK HOLIDAY
travel plans and make simple checks of things like oil, coolant and washer fluid before hitting the road, according to the RAC. Get cover from £29.99. Vehicle based roadside only on an annual continuous basis. New members only. Despite Highways England announcing more than 370 miles of roadworks are to be removed or completed in time for the August bank holiday, data suggests people should still expect queues. Rod Dennis, Traffic Watch spokesman for the motorist’s champion, said: “Drivers can expect some queues, especially on the busiest routes to the coasts, Lake District and major cities, but by planning ahead and looking at alternative routes they can help alleviate some of the stress that can be associated with long car journeys.” According to the study of drivers’ plans for the bank holiday, Saturday will be the busiest day, with the number of getaways set to rise by 2.5 million on last year to reach five million. Sunday will also be busy on the roads. The
figures show that some 4.4 million leisure journeys will take place, double the number that was predicted last year. In total, there will be some 20.7 million cars on major roads between August 25 and 29. But drivers may be able to escape the rush by planning their journey before setting out, using tools like the free RAC app available from the App Store or Google Play. The RAC’s route planner can also help drivers find the best possible way to get to and from their destination. Rod Dennis said: “It can be a good idea to travel outside peak times. This Friday evening, plus through the day during Saturday and Sunday are likely to be the most hectic with bumper-tobumper queues expected on some parts of the network, so motorists that start their journey early or much later on each day might be rewarded with a much clearer run on the roads.”

Drivers are being advised to carefully plan their journeys this bank holiday weekend as figures show that as many as 20 million leisure trips will be made over the long break. According to figures from the RAC, more than double the number of cars will take to the road over the long weekend than the same period last year. It is thought that the weaker pound is playing a crucial role in the higher traffic forecasts, with the lower cost of sterling encouraging Brits to stay at home rather than heading abroad. By contrast, the changeable weather does not seem to have hampered the determination of drivers to enjoy the last long break before Christmas. But drivers should take the time to consider their

WNT FUNDRAISING REACHES £10,000 FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK Sheffield staff and customers from WNT are celebrating this week after their fundraising efforts helped raise over £10,000 for Cancer Research UK. The specialist supplier of cutting tools and equipment for the engineering manufacturing sector has raised the sum for Cancer Research UK, following twelve months of fundraising by co-ordinating it’s staff and customers in a series of fun events. Tony Pennington, Managing Director at the WNT (UK) in Sheffield said, “We’re so pleased to have raised this sum for life-saving research. The events we organise as part of the WNT group are a mixture of staff and customer events, some are feats of endurance and others are just fun days out where customers are always sympathetic to the charities that we support. Cancer Research has a special significance to the team here at WNT (UK), which is obvious by the enthusiasm and effort that goes into the participation by everyone employed at WNT. That is reflected in the participation levels and the stories that are inevitably told after the event. Behind it all, though, is the knowledge that we are all doing this for an extremely worthy cause” Fundraising activities this year have seen employees endure a gruelling coast-to-cost cycle ride, a mass participation cycling event in the company’s home country of Germany, customers have been involved in motorcycle track days, attended motorcycle races, caught hundreds of fish and hit 1000s of golf shots. In raising money for Cancer
Research there were many solo efforts, as well as team contributions at company events and at each customer day that WNT organised. At the customer days each participant was asked to make a small contribution to the fund-raising activities and everyone obliged. One of the biggest customer events of the WNT calendar is a motorcycle track day at Cadwell Park, where under the guidance of professional motorcycle racers, customers get to spend time pushing their own riding skills to the limit, on their own motorcycles around the Lincolnshire circuit. Smaller customer days involved angling, golfing and cycling, all popular activities with the WNT team, but ones that also strike a chord with many customers. Once a year WNT employees from across Europe also get the opportunity to participate in the WNT Bike Challenge over a 110 km course that traverses the mountains between Germany and Austria. This involves some 4000 metres of climbing, so every penny that goes to charity is hard-earned. For this event in 2015 over 90 employees took part from 13 different countries, among these were members of Team WNT, an elite women’s cycle team, who helped to push the pace along. “The enormous number of participants reflects the importance of cycling at WNT,” explains Claude Sun, WNT’s Global Managing Director. “No other sport reflects our company values better than cycling. Fighting spirit, teamwork and sportsmanship play a very important role at WNT. Cycling reflects these values extremely well and brings them to
life. In addition cycling offers the benefit of keeping people fit and healthy!” WNT (UK) will be hosting many more customer activity days during 2016, including new opportunities to come along and watch its sponsored teams competing in elite ladies cycling, motorcycle racing and powerboat racing, where Team WNT F2 is defending its British Championship this year. If you are a customer, speak to your local technical Sales Engineer about getting involved. Sarah Threadgall, Local Fundraising Manager at Cancer Research UK said, “We are extremely grateful for all the time and effort invested by WNT staff and customers. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has fundraised towards this impressive total so far. “All funds raised will go towards the charity’s research to beat over 200 types of cancer, helping to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.” Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking research. So funds raised through supporters like WNT and their customers is crucial to the work of doctors, nurses and scientists who work day and night to fight cancer on all fronts. SHEFFIELD EAGLES APPEAL FOR HELP TO SECURE RUGBY LEAGUE IN THE CITY Sheffield Eagles Club Statement From Sheffield Eagles RLFC
short. Many of you will know that our club went ‘full-time’ this year – whilst this provides players with a great opportunity In all honestly this is an upsetting and difficult piece to of development through the benefits of being able to fully write and release to the RFL commit to the cause and world. receiving full time coaching, Sadly, our club is in a rather with it comes significant dire financial predicament at financial responsibilities for the this time – so much so that we club. are open to all options including As a result of many factors facing the very real prospect - not least being the loss of a that Sheffield Eagles RLFC significant investor and the could indeed cease to exist fact that we have been playing entirely. ‘on the road’ throughout the The club performed season – the club will very exceptionally well last season shortly be unable to fulfil its and was in contention for financial obligations and as a promotion to Super League, result of this we have sought which had we achieved it, no professional insolvency advice doubt would have attracted new from a local firm; BCIA – investment to take the club to a Recovery & Turnaround Ltd. consistently higher level. As it stands today, the club The club was totally is working incredibly hard to committed to achieving the ensure that it can honour all goal of playing Super League of its financial commitments football once again this year, in order to see the current but due to a complex set of season through and also to reasons including the strong attract investment and funding competition in the league we from the business or sporting have seen our best efforts fall community!
An opportunity to soar . . . . .
Despite the current situation we are facing, the club have far from thrown the towel in. We have been in advanced discussions with several prospective investors who are committed to the future of Rugby League in South Yorkshire. Whilst there are external factors which we are working hard to address, the opportunity to build on the great work of the current team is palpable. Whilst the club has suffered from the fact that it lost its long-time home, we are in advanced discussions with Sheffield City Council and Legacy Park Ltd about building a state of the art facility to offer not only a home for our Rugby club, but also a sporting facility in the community, office space, a gymnasium, fabulous training facilities and a permanent venue for junior development in both codes of rugby and other related activities. We are actively seeking discussions with anyone
interested in leading or being a significant part of saving this wonderful club. At this time, the club continues to fight with the commitment and leadership of the Board of Directors and the support of its coaches, playing and support staff and of course its incredible fans, without which the club would not even exist. It could be a supporter group, a wealthy entrepreneur, a business or a fellow sporting club who writes the next chapter with us here at the Eagles – one thing is for sure, we will do everything in our power to make sure that this wonderful club lives to fight another season and secures its long term future. For more information or to declare interest in the opportunity to rebuild this founder Super League member club, please contact John Whaling, CEO, Sheffield Eagles RLFC. CLUB THRIVING IS REFRESHING On a hot summer night sometimes it’s nice to shake off the pull of the TV and have a leisurely walk down to the local club. Being a Thursday night you wouldn’t expect much more than one man and his dog or maybe even two of them playing dominoes in a corner. What I did find though was a full concert room at Hatfield Main Club (Pit Club), Stainforth with all the hustle and bustle of a thriving music venue. The entertainer on this occasion was a very accomplished guitar vocalist known as Lee Stone who straight away hit the audience with his raw energy and enthusiasm. Lee had a smooth, professional sound quality to his act and that timeless vintage fashion sense that you might associate with bands such as the Stone Roses, Oasis and many more from the “Brit Pop” era. As I expected from the dress sense the music reflected the optimistic, carefree feel of the late 90’s and early 2000’s with songs from REM, Bryan Adams and Scouting for Girls. Thrown into the mix were also great singalong numbers such as “Wonderwall” by Oasis, an acoustic version of “It must be love” made famous
by Madness and the sure fire audience pleaser of Queen’s “crazy little thing called love”. The audience were really warming up by the end of the spot, it’s always funny watching your fellow audience members when they think nobody is watching. They move just a little bit more! Then without warning one lady decided to get on that dancefloor on her own, couldn’t fault her. Not sure how committed she was to the song though. I thought you were supposed to throw the handbag down and dance around it. But, sadly it stayed on the shoulder. I’m glad I decided to ditch the TV for the night. You can’t beat seeing a live entertainer, for me, Britain has got talent. Chris Arron

ANGLER’S CORNER
even if it’s back leaded, it’s still an issue; the only way to get bites is too let the line sink completely, so I use a heavy lead of 3.5oz to set the hook, as with Clint Walker I’m often fishing in less than two feet of water, and often less than a foot from the bank! I also set I’ve had a bumper week this week, two great fishing sessions, and a premium addition to my up well back from the water’s edge, and just wait and watch… it’s exciting stuff! list of supporters for which I’m very grateful! My first visit of the week was to a Staffordshire The first fish, a smashing double at 16lb, came after just five minutes, a second, smaller club water where I’ve been doing very well of double hit the net around fifteen minutes later late, catching numerous double figure fish on every visit, so I fancied a bit more rod bending before things started to get a little quieter as the scorching sun rose high in the sky, the action! temperatures soared, and the fish backed off a It’s a very picturesque water, frequented by little to sunbathe. Slow, but consistent sport saw passers-by, and an ideal opportunity to engage me land a dozen fish, all doubles, and all of which the wider public who invariably take an interest fought like stink in the shallow waters. I also lost when you are playing a big fish. I opted to fish a completely different area of the lake for a change, a couple of fish, one to a straightened hook, after one which is described by most as ‘unproductive’, ten minutes of tussle, which was disappointing as it felt like it could have been a very good fish and as a result, is rarely fished by many club (aren’t they all when you lose them?) but overall, members…surely then, that had to be worth it was good day. I also chatted to a few people checking out! who walked past and talked to them about the Once again, my tactics were simple; a small fishing, and there really is a genuine interest from amount of particle was deposited in the margins as I tackled up, by which time there were already most folk which is good to hear; it won’t be too hard to make them anglers in future. tails waving over the bait. A simple mono hook My second visit was to a much tougher water, link to a size 10 hook (club rules) which was hoping to catch an early morning tench, or maybe baited with either a single piece of hair rigged even one of the resident carp which are a much corn, or a sliver of Mainline Baits Cell, and the harder prospect. I also really enjoy fishing red maggot. I’d just settled, when the phone rang, at this water with a lighter rod, so my Sonik S3 and the wife called for a chat before going to 1.5lb Specialist is the ideal tool for such a job, and when twinned with a 6000 series reel, makes work. Obviously, at that very moment, the ‘tip a brilliant set up for taming hard fighting doubles wrenched over and I had to drop the phone to grab the rod and play my first tench of the day to with the chance of a bigger fish! the net. At around 4lb, it was a nice fish to start I have to say that this is one of the few venues with, and a couple more quickly followed. Then I fish a completely slack line. I’ve found that a tight line is too easily spotted or spooked on, and the bream moved in… Don’t get me wrong, I love
catching bream too, especially ones of a decent size, but for some reason, at this venue, they are particularly sticky and make a right mess! They were good fish though, and a string of nine or ten slabs of about 5lb each were pleasing to catch, but as the sun rose over the treeline, the swim died completely. A switch to single maggot, float fished on the drop, kept me busy catching quality roach and rudd of around 4-6oz with an ‘lump’ of a couple of ounces bigger whilst I kept an eye on the water to spot surface cruising carp. Eventually, as the afternoon progressed, dark backs started to break the surface, and I seriously considered floater tactics before succumbing instead to the lure of homemade corned beef pie and gravy which was waiting at home… the carp can wait, my pie can’t, so I’ll have to go back again soon! Finally, this week, I’m delighted to have been asked to join the team at Bank Statement Clothing. I’ve previously resisted all offers to join clothing companies, as I really don’t believe that what you wear helps you catch more fish, but at Bank Statement, there are a few neat ideas I really like, such as a handy compass on the zip of the Stealth Jacket, a rather natty polo shirt, moleskin
trousers, and some great new items in the pipeline, so I’m very pleased to join the brand. I just hope that having a chubby short chap with a beard to model clobber doesn’t affect sales too much! (Although I’ve heard that chubsters with a beard are ‘in’ at the moment?) Meanwhile, check out www.bankstatementclothing.com to check out some practical, yet stylish, kit.

STIUBBS - WE SHOW CHARACTER Alan Stubbs hailed the character his side showed as he recorded his first win in charge of Rotherham United with a 1-0 triumph over Brentford at AESSEAL New York Stadium. The Millers notched their first three points of the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season thanks to Danny Ward’s composed first half strike which proved enough to see off the Bees on Saturday. Stubbs was quick to pay tribute to his side’s resolute display, which also saw them keep their first clean sheet of the new season, and was delighted with how they dug into their reserves to see out the game. “I thought that the players showed a lot of character today,” he beamed in the wake of the game. “They had to dig in at times because we were playing against a very good Brentford team who moved the ball really well. We knew that there would be times in the game where we would have to be patient and diligent and defend. We managed to get that win and get our season off on and running.” Stubbs continued to add that his delight at nullifying the opposition and suggested that the scoreline didn’t flatter the Millers who forged a number of opportunities on David Bentley’s goal,

the most notable of which fell to debutant Izzy Brown who was thwarted by an astute stop by the Bees’ number one. “To be fair to their ‘keeper he made a great save off Izzy, but there was a great bit of play for our goal; and as soon as Wardy picked up the ball I felt confident that he was going to score. “We have had a couple of other opportunities to score, but whenever you keep clean sheets you’ve always got a great opportunity to win the game. We have had a really tough start against teams that are right up there but today is pleasing to get our first home win. After conceding three goals in each game in previous meetings with Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion, Stubbs explained that he felt that keeping the opposition’s scoreline at nil was almost as pleasing as taking the three points. “There were a lot of positives today in our game. I thought that we looked dangerous on the counter against a good side. The most important thing was the three points but very close to that was the clean sheet,” he explained. “I think that first half we looked dangerous going forward, we were a threat on the break, but I suppose that they looked a threat on the break as well. It was two teams that were looking to counter. In the second half, it is a natural reaction, when you have got hold of something you drop a little deeper. Brentford had more of the ball but I thought that we defended well at times and threw our body on the line, which you have to do. It is good result for us at home.” Stubbs continued by heaping praise on Danny Ward who picked also picked up the Sponsors Man of the Match on Saturday, as well as crediting the debut of Tom Adeyemi after he put pen-to-paper on a loan deal earlier in the week. “He has played that role since the beginning of the season. He does a lot of unselfish work but
he certainly got quality and it is up to us to make sure we provide him with the opportunities to express that. Today, as soon as he picked up the ball I felt very confident that there was only going to be one outcome. “I thought he [Adeyemi] was doing well but he has just got a little bit of a thigh injury. We are hoping that it is not going to be too serious. I think he has come off before it turned into a pull. It may be a slight strain.” There was bad news amidst a sea of positives at AESSEAL New York Stadium on Saturday as the Millers boss learnt of the severity of Kirk Broadfoot’s injury, who he says will now endure a lengthy lay off. “We have had a tough start in terms of injuries. We are not going to feel sorry for ourselves. Broady has had an operation today on his back so he is going to be out for 6-8 weeks. We are hoping that we get one or two back over the next couple of days which will help, but Broady’s injury is a bit of a blow for us.”
MANAGER HAILS SUCCESSIVE WINS Darren Ferguson laid credit at the feet of his players after they recorded back to back wins for the first time since January. It prompted the Rovers manager to claim that the 1-0 win over Cheltenham Town – which ended the Robins’ 17 game unbeaten home run – is not something that his side would have achieved last season. He said: “I’m delighted with the win and the clean sheet against a team that haven’t lost here for 17 matches. “It’s a really good win for us. I think the mentality is good, to come here and win the game like we did – we were under pressure at the end – I don’t think we would have won this game last season. “We knew we’d have to weather periods where they would throw the ball in the box and I thought we dealt with that very well. “(It’s a) second clean sheet on the bounce which is vitally important.” Despite numerous injuries to the first team squad, which lead to Ferguson naming a 16-year-old on the substitute’s bench, the Scot was pleased that his team are up and running in the league;

where they now find themselves in an early play off spot. “It’s been a good week; two good wins, two clean sheets and now we go back to another home game to finish the month off,” Ferguson said prior to welcoming Yeovil Town to South Yorkshire on Saturday. “All in all it’s about winning football matches, in particular the early part of the season and you’ll build confidence through that and considering our injuries it’s two really big wins for us. “Credit to the players – all of them – they really stood up, played some good football and it was a pleasing day.”

The second week of the County Senior League season was a busy one with 30 games taking place over the three separate days. Premier Division Defending champions Frecheville got their title defence off to a good start on Wednesday night, as they beat Millmoor Juniors 3-1 at Grange Park. They followed the win with an identical 3-1 win away against newly promoted Denaby United on Saturday. Swallownest FC are the early league leaders. They have three wins from three. Midweek they beat last years’ League Cup winners Jubilee Sports 4-1 at Chaucer School and were equally impressive on the weekend, with a 3-1 victory against Denaby Main at Manvers Park. Wombwell Main celebrated their return to the Premier Division with four points from their opening two games. They opened their season midweek, with a goalless draw at home to Athersley Recreation Reserves. A Luke Norbury brace helped them to a 3-1 away win over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves on the weekend. Athersley made it backto-back draws on Saturday, as they held Millmoor Juniors to a 3-3 draw away from home. Harry Bamworth scored a dramatic injury time goal to complete his hat-trick and give Handsworth Parramore Reserves a 4-3 home win over North Gawber Colliery on Saturday. Two goals from the ever reliable Tim Council and one from Bradley Kemp gave AFC Penistone Church an impressive 3-1 home win over Swinton Athletic. Division One Brinsworth Whitehill have the early lead in Division One. They opened the week on Monday with a hardfought 3-2 win away against Silkstone United. They were comfortable winners on the weekend though, as goals from Jack Kitchen (2), Greg Mason and Aaron Edge helped them to a 4-1 away win over Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. AFC Dronfield are also on six points, with two wins this week. They firstly beat Davy FC away 2-1, and were big 4-1 winners at home against Silkstone on Saturday. Davy suffered again on weekend, with a 4-2 loss to South Kirkby Colliery. Grimethorpe Sports and Caribbean Sports shared 13 goals between them on Saturday. Goals from Stevie Bennett (3), Neil Johnson, Connor Cocks, Adam Storey, Kyle Cook and OG (2) settled the game 9-4 in Grimethorpe’s favour. Caribbean had been previously involved in a high-scoring game midweek, when they fell 3-2 to Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves at the MDC Sports Stadium. Oughtibridge WMFC opened their season on Saturday with a solid 2-0 win over Wickersley at Wickersley School Division Two North Hepworth United have taken to the County Senior League like a duck to water. They have three wins from three games, 19 goals for and only one against. Midweek they beat Euroglaze FC 4-0 at Leeds Road Playing Fields and on the weekend they beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves 9-0 at the same venue. Graceholme FC have a similar record to Hepworth in their debut season also. They were made hard to work for a 3-2 home win over Houghton Main Reserves on Wednesday night, but were comfortable 6-0 victors against South Kirkby Colliery Reserves on Saturday. Houghton Main bounced back from their loss to Graceholme, with a 4-0 away win against Working Wonders at Darton College on Saturday. Dodworth Miners Welfare recorded back-to-back wins this week. They started the week with a 2-0 home victory over South Kirkby Colliery Reserves. They then beat Euroglaze FC 3-2 on Saturday, with goals from Ryan Barlow (2) and Jake Whitworth. Wombwell Main Development Squad followed their opening day victory over Working Wonders, with a 2-2 draw at home against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves on Wednesday evening.

MILLWALL BLADES HIT BY PEN AT THE DEN WILDER’S REACTION A cruel last-minute penalty denied the Blades a point the performance deserved at The Den on Saturday. Stefan Scougall cancelled out a strike from Shaun Williams in the first half but Steve Morison netted a late spot-kick after a battling Blades display. After naming an unchanged XI for four consecutive games, chief Wilder rang the changes, which included a debut for goalkeeper Moore, who was signed from Cardiff on Friday. Freeman, Coutts and Scougall also started. The opening ten minutes produced very little in terms of goalscoring opportunities as both sides attempted to work each other out. Scougall fired over from distance and Clarke was close to connecting with Duffy’s cross. With the game’s first corner, though, Millwall took the lead. The right-wing delivery was half cleared but dropped perfectly for the left-footed WILLIAMS to drill home from 20
yards. Clarke’s header from Hussey’s cross was deflected wide but the Blades were back on level terms inside seven minutes. Basham, Duffy and Freeman linked up on the right and the latter’s pull-back saw SCOUGALL turn the ball home with goalkeeper Archer distracted by defender Craig. The next chance saw Morison head over from Martin’s inswinging free-kick but the Blades had wrestled the initiative back for the remainder of the half, although chances were scarce. A couple of crosses, with Clarke the target, put Millwall on the back foot and Coutts saw a lot of the midfield ball. Millwall made an electric start to the second half and Gregory had two good opportunities inside 90 seconds. From Craig’s free-kick, he curled over after a fortunate ricochet, then, when in the clear, he was denied by a sprawling Moore save. Two shots from Duffy,
both wide, were all that United could manage in the early stages of the second half but Gregory went close again on 62 minutes, poking just wide after he beat Basham and Moore to Webster’s pass. Done replaced Sharp just after the hour and the substitute and Hussey both put testing crosses into the box. Both teams were full of effort but Millwall got back on top late on. On 87 minutes, Moore made a fantastic save from Morison and then O’Connell made a mistake and recovered to stop Morison. However,
LANE SET FOR WOODHOUSE BOOK LAUNCH
It is a story that you just couldn’t make up. Woodhouse has now told the full story, an honest account of his journey in ‘Box to Box’. Bramall Lane is very much his spiritual home, and as he famously says, “Once a Blade, always a Blade” - with that in mind it is fitting that the book sees its launch at S2. The Platinum Suite doors will open at 7.30pm with a pie and pea supper served at 8pm - Woodhouse will then take the stage at 9pm for a Q&A session before signing copies of the book which will be exclusively available on the night priced at just
£18.99 per copy. Tickets for the event, which are priced at £25, are now on sale from the Commercial Department on 0114 253 7200 or by emailing commercial@ sufc.co.uk There is also a chance for 30 people to join Woodhouse on this
On Thursday 6th October, Sheffield United will be proud to play a part in yet another major event in the life of one of its former players. Sport cannot have seen too many characters like Curtis Woodhouse - from his days as an apprentice with the Blades, to becoming its youngest ever captain in the FA Cup, to England, the Premier League, boxing title fights and victories, football management and beyond.
those two were to be involved again a minute later. From a left-wing cross O’Connell handled in the box and referee Woolmer waved away his appeals for a push and a penalty was awarded, which MORISON converted, sending Moore the wrong way. Five minutes of added time gave Blades fans hope and the visitors were on the attack with Millwall happy to sit deep but a couple of fouls in crucial areas prevented any momentum before the final whistle.
special night for an intimate Champagne reception in the Legends of the Lane. These tickets are priced at £50 per head and include the best seats in the room for the aforementioned Q&A.
BRAYFORD SENT ON LOAN WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
John Brayford has left Sheffield United on a season-long loan to join Championship side, Burton Albion. The right back achieved cult status at the Lane following a very successful loan period in 2014. The bearded full back re-joined the Blades permanently in a deal worth over a million pounds in January 2015. However, a series of injuries tainted his permanent spell at the Blades leading to the decision to loan him to Burton to re-join former Blade manager, Nigel Clough. Speaking about the move, Chris Wilder said: “This loan enables
us to reinvest in other areas before the end of the transfer window. I feel we already have cover in that area of the pitch and we’ll look to strengthen in the coming days.” Also leaving the Lane is Martyn Woolford, the midfielder joined last summer and went on to make 34 appearances for Sheffield United. He was left surplus to requirements when Chris Wilder became the new manager. After being released from his contract Woolford signed a one-year deal at Fleetwood town. Wilder has made his ninth addition to the
side, adding a goalkeeper to his ranks. Simon Moore joins from Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee believed to be around the 500 thousand mark. The 26-year-old signs a three-year deal at the Lane and is expected to compete with George Long for a place in the
United goal this season. Discussing the move, Wilder said: “Simon is a good age, he’s got experience. We’ve got good value too, it is a good deal for Sheffield United and now it is up to him to produce the performances we know he is capable of.”
Blades boss Chris Wilder says everyone is ‘hurting’ after Saturday’s loss at Millwall. Steve Morison’s late penalty after a Jack O’Connell handball settled the contest in the Lions favour despite Stefan Scougall cancelling out an early strike from Shaun Williams. Speaking afterwards, the Gaffer remarked: “It’s another disappointing result for everyone connected to this football club; one point from four games isn’t good enough. “We started very well and dominated the game, falling behind against the run of play. But we showed character and steel to get back into the game and for the remainder of the first-half we dominated the ball and had the chances, but you have to make them count and put the opposition to bed. “Millwall reacted positively in the second-

They had chances and there attacking players at the top of the pitch caused us problems. “Unfortunately we’ve not defended in and around the box well enough and that has ultimately decided the result. “We will reflect, the players need to think about their performances and we need to look at certain things before talking about them, we’ll have a sensible appraisal as a group on Monday.” Wilder added: “I’m very emotional about the situation because as people know this is a club that means a lot to me and a lot to fans and the people associated with it. “We’re all hurting and the position we’re in isn’t anywhere near where we want to be, we’ve lost games too easily this season, if you can’t win you mustn’t get beaten and that’s something we must address quickly.” Tickets for the tour are now available in person from the ticket office, over the phone on 0114 253 7200 (option 1) or online at www.sufc. talent-sport.co.uk They are priced at £6 adults and £4 concessions. Please note this is not a ‘meet the players’ event, it is a tour behind the scenes of our famous home. We don’t recommend it for young children. Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Legends of the Lane will open its doors to those fans simply wanting to spend time enjoying the fantastic memorabilia on display in the museum. There is no need to buy tickets in advance for this option; entry on the door is just £3 adults and £1 concessions. Doors will open at 1.30pm and close 20 minutes before kick-off.

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED Owls full back Jack Hunt says the players must stand up and be counted and produce a performance at Brentford on Saturday. After back to back defeats, Hunt wants to see a positive reaction at Griffin Park this weekend. Since the beginning of the process under Carlos Carvalhal over 12 months ago, the Owls’ reaction to defeat has typically been swift. And the right back wants that steel in the side to be evident in the coming capital clash. “We have to stand up, go toe to toe with the
opposition next week and put it right,” he said. “It’s tough to take, the easy thing to do is shy away but that’s not what this team is about. We have to stand up to it and take it on the chin. We’ve got a job to do. “When you’ve been beaten, you just want to get up as quickly as you can and go again, use that hurt as motivation to take into next week. “As a team we weren’t good enough, individual performances weren’t good enough but we just have to work hard.” The Owls next face a Brentford side who have won their opening two
league fixtures of the campaign. Wednesday picked up a solid point at Norwich and tasted defeat at Burton in their travels so far and for Hunt, the first victory of the term away from Hillsborough cannot come soon enough. He added: “In this league, there are a lot of games to go. “But the next game is massive. We have got to go out there and put in a good performance and hopefully we’ll get the result that goes along with that.”
A HARD WEEK Carlos Carvalhal said his side have had a tough week after their 2-0 defeat to Leeds at Hillsborough. The away side took the lead in the second half through Marcus Antonsson before Chris Wood sealed the victory with five minutes to go. Before and after the first goal, though, the Owls had chances to register. Carvalhal said: “Today we created enough chances to win the game. “The team that took the lead can always try and keep hold of that and it was Leeds who scored first. “We kept creating chances as we tried to get the equaliser, but it meant that Leeds could counter-attack the spaces at the back and this is when they scored the second goal. “I am not one for excuses as you know but we have had a tough week. “We wanted to give the same as we did against Aston Villa and Norwich, but the balance of the team is not at 100% in this moment. “At the moment we have players who are just
arriving and the team are at different stages in the process. “Some players haven’t had much time in
pre-season, so they are catching up with the conditions, but this is normal for this point in the season.”
