SHEFFIELD HONOURS ITS OLYMPIC & PARALYMPIC STARS WITH CIVIC RECEPTION CELEBRATION Courage, determination, passion and inspiration. We’ve seen it all at this year’s Rio Games and in recognition Sheffield City Council is throwing a special civic reception in honour of the city’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Throughout the decades Sheffield has been home to many sporting stars, whether they live or train here. This year we have already seen several of Sheffield’s athletes proudly representing the city as

well as Yorkshire and Great Britain in the Rio Olympics. And with the Paralympics starting next week there will be plenty more Sheffield grit taking to the sporting stage. In recognition of their amazing efforts and achievements and to complement the Yorkshire homecoming in Leeds on 28 September, a civic reception with a Sheffield flavour will be held for them in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour at the Sheffield Town Hall.

Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “We are extremely proud of the pure grit and determination shown by all our athletes. They devote their lives to competing, being the best and representing our city and country in the eyes of the world. “We are very lucky here in Sheffield because we have fantastic facilities spanning across many sporting categories, which naturally helps us

to produce such strong local talent, and makes us the ideal location for those looking for a training home. “These athletes are truly inspiring and their presence in our city plays a huge role in developing the next generation of sports men and women. We look forward to seeing our gifted sports stars being honoured at the Yorkshire homecoming and to welcoming them home to Sheffield for this special occasion.” The celebration event is

expected to take place in October following the closure of the Paralympic Games, which runs from 7 to 18 September. As well as the Olympic and Paralympic homecoming event there are also plans to celebrate the achievements of all Sheffield’s great sports stars at other functions in the coming months. Details of these celebratory events will be confirmed following further discussions with all relevant parties.
