SHEFFIELD CHOSEN TO LEAD THE WAY IN NATIONAL FLOOD RESILIENCE REVIEW In a report, released last week by the Government, into national flood resilience, Sheffield has been selected as the first core city in England to be protected from flooding to the same standard as London by 2021. The report highlights that Sheffield offers great potential for improving flood protection from its many rivers whilst enabling regeneration of the urban environment. This work is seen as vital in unlocking the economic, aesthetic and

S1

ecological value of the city’s waterways and making Sheffield a more beautiful and better place to live. Councillor Bryan Lodge, Cabinet Member for Environment at Sheffield City Council said: “We’re pleased that Sheffield has been selected as a pilot city for the biggest investment in flood defences outside of London. We will lead the way with other core cities following from our example. This report confirms Government’s recognition of the

excellent progress that we (the Council) and the Environment Agency have made with our innovative flood protection and urban regeneration plans. “As a part of the deal we will form a partnership providing us with access to senior business leaders and industry experts which presents a once in a life time opportunity to protect Sheffield for at least the next century. We look forward to working with Government in developing our plans over the coming months.

“Ultimately this is about protecting our communities and businesses. If we simply do nothing we leave the city vulnerable to the devastating effects of flooding, like we saw in 2007. We are currently consulting on potential options and ideas to protect Sheffield from flooding. This is a great challenge for the city and does include some sensitive options around the temporary use of parks and woodland locations. However these are options, that’s why

we need you to know the facts and we need you to have your say on what happens next. “I urge everyone to get involved, either come down to one of our drop in events or complete our online consultation form at www. floodprotectionsheffield. com.” More information about Sheffield’s Flood Protection Programme, including details of drop-in events can be found at www. floodprotectionsheffield. com.

If I ever catch up with the doctor who messed up my limb transplant operation, I will kill him with my bear hands. Autocorrect is so funny. the recording - including David Foster, Humberto Gatica and Tony Renis who worked together on the trailblazing success of Bocelli’s ‘Amore.’ Together, they explored theme songs featured in films such as “Doctor Zhivago”, “Love Story”, “The Godfather”, “Life is Beautiful”, “Gladiator”, “The Postman”, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and many more, as well as popular songs from stage musicals, immortalised by their film versions, such as “West Side Story” and “Evita.” A duet with pop superstar Ariana Grande on ‘E Piu Ti Penso’ from ‘Once Upon A Time In America’ completed the stellar line up. From Ennio Morricone to Leonard Bernstein, these songs represent modern classics and over 4 nights, Bocelli will transport audiences to these epic film sets, as well as performing some of his best-loved songs. Andrea says, “It has been a dream of mine for decades to bring to life great film soundtracks,” says Bocelli, “They are an artistic treasure trove and a soundtrack to many peoples lives, experiences and precious memories. Bringing the ‘Cinema’ album to live concert audiences is an opportunity I could not miss.” The biggest selling solo classical artist of all time, Bocelli has performed for four U.S. presidents, two popes and the royal family, as well as at ceremonies for the Olympic Games and the World Cup. He has been praised by such luminaries as Luciano Pavarotti, Franco Corelli, Zubin Mehta, Jose Carreras, Lorin Maazel, Renee Fleming and Celine Dion, who once introduced him by saying: “I heard someone say that if God had a singing voice, he would sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli.” Andrea Bocelli has sold over 80 million albums around the world, his 1999 Sacred Arias album has sold over 5 million copies, making it the best selling classical recording of all time. His pop career, including the much loved Time To Say Goodbye, a duet with Sarah Brightman that reached Number 1 in charts around the world in 1998, may have drawn millions in, but Bocelli has always enthusiastically shared his classical calling.

The Jobs’ Fair will take place on 21st September and will be located in The Oasis Courtyard. display using a whole host of traditional, loud fireworks. Throughout the night, you, your family and your friends can enjoy walkabout entertainment from an authentic Mariachi band, Can-Can and Samba dancers, American cheerleaders and a Chinese Dragon as well as a few other surprises. Plus,

there’ll be live music on the festival stage from two fantastic tribute bands, Mini Mixx (Little Mix tribute) and Flash (Queen tribute). Go on, dance the night away in style!

DAVIS CUP TROPHY COMES TO GRAVES HEALTH AND SPORTS CENTRE The newly developed Graves Health and Sports Centre treated Sheffield families to a fun filled day of free tennis and the opportunity to see and have a photo with the famous Davis Cup Trophy. Activities involved a morning and afternoon session of Mini and Junior tennis for 4 – 16 year olds and Cardio Tennis for the adults. Attendees were also treated to a doubles exhibition match played by the centres very own coaches Sam Salt and David Sherwood, paired with Junior player Joseph Newman-Billington ranking top 10 in the country and Sheffield and District Champion 2016 Josh Gledden. The event was attended by

over 35 families many of which enjoyed tennis for the first time. Lord Mayor Denise Fox also made an appearance to visit the centre which opened its doors on 1st September to meet some of the families who came down to play tennis and see the Davis Cup Trophy during it’s tour of the UK. Alex Graves, General Manager at Graves Health and Tennis Centre said; “We are thrilled to have been chosen to be part of this very special Davis Cup Tour, and we hope that by enabling the local community to shore the successes of the GB team we can drive participation and encourage more passion and enthusiasm

for tennis in the area.” Graves Heath and Sports Centre boasts 8 indoor tennis courts and 10 outdoor courts, offering tennis coaching for children and adults of all abilities. The courts are also available for hire for recreational tennis every day. If you or your child would like to get into tennis or looking to get back in to the sports after some time away contact the team today and discover the exciting world of tennis. Sheffield life coach cycles coast to coast across Ireland in memory of friend A Sheffield life coach is planning to cycle 270 miles in 3 days across Ireland to support her local cancer hospital after losing a close friend to cancer. Debbie Cundy, from Oughtibridge will be getting back on her bike on September 22nd 2016 to raise funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity by undertaking a courageous coast to coast challenge in memory of her friend, Jane. After supporting Weston Park Cancer Charity for many years and raising thousands of pounds through various fundraising events, Debbie hopes to raise further funds this September to support cancer patients across the region. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Weston Park Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Debbie's lifelong friend, Jane Cooper from Shafton, Barnsley was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in August 2015. Mum of 2, Jane, who led a fit and healthy lifestyle, visited her doctors with a cough before being referred for an x-ray which confirmed the

devastating news that she in fact had terminal lung cancer. After coming to terms with her diagnosis with partner, Jason and daughters Amelia (10) and Romany (8) Jane embarked on a number of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments at Weston Park Hospital. “She was a real fighter,” said Debbie. “From the moment Jane was diagnosed, she and Jason wanted the girls to have an understanding of what was happening to prepare them for the time when Jane would no longer be with them.” “She never lost hope and her amazing strength and resilience was truly inspirational. The cancer was so aggressive and in a short space of time it had spread to her liver and bones, before she sadly passed away in July at the age of 47.” Jason, Amelia and Romany will be supporting Debbie via JustGiving and following her cycling challenge on Facebook throughout September. Debbie continued, “More than anything, Jason, the kids and I want to do everything we can to keep Jane’s memory alive and help raise funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity.” “We are ever so lucky to have this incredible specialised cancer hospital on our doorstep in Sheffield and it’s so important that the charity can continue supporting pioneering projects which will ultimately give patients a greater chance of survival now and in the future.”

Cancer currently affects 1 in every 3 people in the UK and by 2020 it is expected to affect 1 in every 2 of us. Throughout 2016, Weston Park Cancer Charity will fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer. Charity Fundraising Manager, Sarah Cross said, “We are very grateful to Debbie for undertaking another fantastic fundraising challenge for the cancer charity in memory of her late friend, Jane.” “From cycling to running, we’re encouraging more people to jump on their bikes or pull on their trainers this year and complete active challenges whilst raising vital funds.” Jane’s family will be joining Weston Park Cancer Charity’s Light the Night event this October in memory of Jane.

DAVID DICKINSON BRINGS HIS REAL DEAL WIN A SET OF HEAT HOLDER PRIZES TO KEEP YOU TO SHEFFIELD TOWN HALL THIS WEEKEND WARM AT THE FOOTBALL & MORE THIS WINTER Why let your antiques collect dust in the attic when you can sell them for cash? Take money on the spot from a dealer OR if you think your item is worth more….take a gamble at auction! Dickinson’s Real Deal is currently one of the most popular daytime shows on ITV and is regularly watched by over a million people. Back for a Thirteenth series, David Dickinson and the dealers are traveling around the country looking for some more bobby dazzlers brought in by members of the public! If you want to sell your goods, but only for the right price, David and the dealers are going to be at Sheffield Town Hall in the City Centre this Saturday 17th September. David commented: “It’s great to bring the show to Sheffield!” “People of Sheffield come along and get the Real Deal” “I’m very much looking forward to visiting Sheffield, an area of the country I love bringing the show to. I remember visiting the area several years ago; the items brought in were fantastic- great quality - with fabulous history and stories attached” You could be quids in like many

of the people who have already taken part… Last time the show was in the area, Barry walked away with £190 for his Late 19th Century Games Compendium, Dales’s gamble paid off with his Collection of Old Golfballs reaching £295 at auction and Simon left the dealers table £320 with his Banjo. This could be you! As usual David Dickinson will be keeping an eye on the deals and giving advice about whether to take the dealers’ cash OR gamble at auction. But the final decision lies with the contributors and it’s up to them to decide which option is the REAL DEAL! Members of the public should bring their antiques & collectables along – the team of independent valuers will be offering free advice on all items brought along

on the day. Admission is free & you do not need to book a place or a ticket. Doors will be open between 9am and 5pm – David & the team look forward to seeing you there! You can contact the Dickinson’s Real Deal team with any queries regarding the event or the programme, on the DRD hotline: 0117 970 7618. Or, you can find us on Facebook and Twitter, just search ITVRealDeal Or write to the team at: The Dickinson’s Real Deal Team, RDF Television West, Regent House, Regent Street, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 4HG Or email: dickinsonsrealdeal@ rdftelevision.com

Nothing puts a downer on a good time outdoors like cold feet and numb fingers, so Heat Holders are the perfect option for keeping snug for any activity that means you’re exposed to the elements for an extended amount of time, whether at work, rest or play, ideal for getting geared up for the new football season! Heat Holders are market leaders in thermal clothing, and are experts at producing pieces that not only retain warmth, but look great. Their incredible socks are the warmest in the world as far has ever been tested, with an amazing 2.34TOG rating, and the gloves, hat and neckwarmer encompass the three part, unique Heat Holders technology as well, making them the perfect additions to your match day outfit. Choose from a cool ribbed, classic turnover of fashion-forward fair isle styles for men or a stylish cable knit design for women, all available in colours that coordinate with the other pieces for a look that is both functional and fun, because who said the two had to be mutually exclusive? The three part technology involves using the Heat Holders specially developed advanced

insulating yarn, which also has superior moisture wicking abilities, keeping you warm but not sweaty. The long looped thermal pile is a result of an innovative knitting technology, which works to hold in more air, upping the thermal TOG rating. VOTE FOR SHEFFIELD THEATRES AS THE UK’S MOST WELCOMING THEATRE Voting is now open for this year’s prestigious UK Theatre Awards. Honoured with the regional title of Most Welcoming Theatre in Yorkshire and the Humber at last year’s awards, Sheffield Theatres hopes this time to secure the prestigious title of the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre 2016. Decided by public vote, the UK Theatre Awards give people the opportunity to share why they love their theatre and the impact it has had on the community. With a host of exciting productions and events in

the last year, Sheffield Theatres has welcomed over 400,000 people through its doors to see shows, eat in the café, sing, dance, and create at workshops or simply to take a look around the buildings. Working with local communities, it is a driving force in improving equality and positive change both on and off its stages and engages a wide range of people of all ages across the city, particularly with its community theatre company Sheffield People’s Theatre. The overall winner of the My Theatre Matters! UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre Award in association with Smooth Radio will be announced at a ceremony at London’s historic Guildhall on Sunday 9 October.

and iconic artists performing on our first-ever live BEF tour. Over the last 35 years, BEF has worked with some of the most famous singers on earth, and for our fantastic shows this October, Glen Matlock, Peter Hooton and Mari Wilson will each be performing one of their most famous songs, together with surprising cover versions done in the unique BEF electronic style. Add to that the inimitable Glenn Gregory (I’m sure I’ve heard that name somewhere), and the 35th anniversary performance of new electronic arrangements of ‘Penthouse And Pavement’ and you have our greatest live show ever’”. Formed in 1980 as Martyn Ware departed Sheffield synth icons The Human League only to find a kindred musical mind in Glenn Gregory, together as Heaven 17 the pair set about writing and recording the songs that would become their debut album ‘Penthouse and Pavement’ released only a year later. In letting the BBC-banned debut single “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang” lead their anti-establishment charge, the band made clear their intentions to break away from their synth-pop contemporaries on their first outing. Follow-up singles “I’m Your Money”, “Play

To Win”, “Penthouse and Pavement” and “The Height of the Fighting (He-La-Hu)” would propel the long-player to No. 14 in the UK charts and a Gold Disc Certification after a 77-week residency inside the Top 100. Now recognised universally as one of the most vital albums to emerge from the New Wave movement in British electronica, ‘Penthouse and Pavement’ has since been included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In 1982, Martyn Ware released the first studio album under the B.E.F. moniker: ‘Music of Quality and Distinction Volume 1’. an album of covers that he and partner Ian Craig Marsh had grown up listening to, the album featured an all-star cast of guest appearances including Paula Yates, Billy MacKenzie, Glenn Gregory, Sandie Shaw and most notably Top 10 Hit “Ball of Confusion” a cover of the infamous track by The Temptations, as sung with powerhouse vocals from Tina Turner. OLDER DRIVERS ‘NO MORE OF A SAFETY RISK ON ROADS THAN YOUNG MOTORISTS’ Elderly drivers do not pose a greater risk to safety on the roads than younger motorists, research has found. It is thought that as drivers age, their ability behind the wheel is hampered by health problems and slower reaction times. But according to a study carried out by Swansea University’s Centre for Innovative Ageing, older drivers often counteract these factors by showing more care when in their vehicle. Previous suggestions that older drivers should have to retake their test to make sure they are fit for the roads have also been rejected by the research. It found that males aged between 17 and 21 are three to four times more likely to crash than men or women in their 70s or over. Despite this, older people are more likely to be killed or seriously injured in road accidents because of their fragility rather than their driving ability, the study found. Speaking at the British Science Festival, which is being held in Swansea this week, Dr Charles Musselwhite said that real or imagined pressure makes older people commit errors on the roads. But he went on: “The solution to this and also any cognitive changes associated

with ageing including changes in working memory, attention and cognitive overload is to drive slower and at certain times of day.” The latest figures from the Department for Transport show that there are around 4.5 million people aged 70 or over in the UK with a full driving licence – 230 of whom are 100 year old or over. At the moment, motorists in the UK have to renew their licence when they turn 70 and every three years after, informing the DVLA that they are still able to drive safely. They can also take advantage of initiatives designed to help extend their driving lifetime by having their skills independently assessed by organisations such as the Institute of Advanced Motorists. The Swansea University study also argued that older people stopping driving may actually speed up their death. It says that while pensioners make up just 19% of pedestrians, they account for 40% of pedestrian deaths. The RAC Foundation said it welcomed the study. Philip Gomm, from the motoring research charity, said: “Older drivers often get a bad rap as they actually tend to be some of the safest people on the road. “They often self-regulate and avoid situations where they feel uncomfortable such as driving during the rush hour, at night or on motorways. “If you go by the statistics, then it is road users at the other end of the age spectrum that society would be better off helping stay safe. “People have a responsibility to ensure they are fit to be behind the wheel throughout their driving lives and we do not support compulsory retesting at an arbitrary age.”

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

Well, it had to happen, my hot streak has cooled considerably this week… I’d been hoping to get onto Rudyard Lake, a 166 acre reservoir, in search of bream and roach, so set aside a day to do just that. I checked the weather forecast, overcast, but no rain, and packed the kit ready to go, but thought I would get away without an umbrella, which turned out to be an major error of judgement. I arrived bright and early, to be met by pink skies, and a warm, pleasant breeze, so I quickly mixed a bowl of groundbait, then tackled up with a big mesh feeder and size 16 hook, which was baited with the tail of a worm and a single red maggot to keep it on the bend. Prior to introducing a baited hook, I’d had upwards of a dozen, clipped up, casts to deposit some bait on the lake bed, and promptly dropped my worm on top. Before the feeder had settled, a gentle pull at the rod tip indicated that fish were interested in feeding ‘on the drop’, and it wasn’t too many minutes before my first bream had hit the net. A couple more casts with a shortened hook length saw a succession of perch, roach and bream enter the net, but then the breeze picked up, and the weather turned inhospitably cold… and then it started to rain. Hang on, the TV weathergirl promised it wouldn’t, the forecast said it wouldn’t and I’d even asked my wife (who knows all) and she said it wouldn’t either! But it did. In sheets. I got soaked. In a dispirited huff, I collected up my now wet through tackle, slung it in the back of the van in a sulk, and started to drive home. Typically, as soon as I closed my door, the clouds parted, and a radiant sun shone through with glorious golden glow, and it stayed that way for the rest of the day! Too late, though, my kit was sodden, so in an effort to salvage something from the day, I nipped home, dropped all the wet gear off, and picked up a couple of lure rods, a small bag of rubber goodies, and a clean mat, and set

off to try and find a swim on a small river which I had to Google to locate, despite the fact that it was on the club card. (Why do clubs rarely put the exact location of river venues?) The river in question really is tiny, little more than three metres across, and the crystal clear waters are packed densely with streamer weed, which makes it tough to fish properly. I’m currently using the Sonik SK4 lure rod for heavier angling, twinning it with a small reel loaded with 30lb braid and a wire trace to which the lure is attached, and I ‘sanitise’ any swim of pike with this set up, before switching to my most recent addition, the ultra light Sonik Light-Tec lure rod. This is a much lighter tool, used in conjunction with 6lb braid and 5lb fluorocarbon, with which I like to drop tiny lures into likely looking spots to search for perch. Finally locating the right stretch, I had a quick walk along the river bank, but couldn’t find a promising spot, nor could I find any water deeper than a few inches! Eventually, I stumbled on the brick remains of an ancient millrace, and the river tumbled into a deeper pool, fringed with reeds, and plenty of promising areas to find fish! The SK4 rod was deployed first, a Rapture shad on the jig head, and it was gracelessly flicked under an overhanging tree to see if any pike lay beneath. A slow retrieve was in order, and I used the current to impart action into the lure tail. Bam! A dull thump at the rod tip was met with solid resistance, and to my surprise, a perch of about 8oz was the first fish to the net. Not the pike I expected, and in truth, I was surprised at the size of lure the perch had taken on. A second cast saw the same thing happen, then a few more casts into prominent spots saw no further action, so it wastime to bring some finesse to the swim. The Light -Tec is a smashing rod to go out and have some fun with. Match it with the Sonik AVX series of reels and you’re good to go. A soft tip gives all the indication you need when fishing with tiny lures, and the through action provides lots of fun when something with a bit of fight takes hold. If fishing is all about enjoyment, then this rod is all about providing it! A tiny SS Grass Minnow was dropped into an eddy, and left to settle near the bottom, and a

WHAT NEXT FOR BROOK? Boxing News By Iftisaam Khan

If you want to see grit determination and desire look no further than last weekend. Going into the fight with a perfect record (36-360) Brook was looking to achieve the unthinkable against the most feared fighter on the planet. In front of a packed house at the O2 arena - the stage was set. There was no going back. As the fight started, the fighter from Sheffield showed just why he’s called the ‘Special One’ with a flurry of successful shots, he made a stern statement to the Kazakh – he was in for a real fight. As the fight went on Triple G was looking more comfortable, with Kell being forced to sustain the full brunt of his power- taking numerous blows to the head. Moving into the 5th round the crowd could sense the fight was inevitably coming to a conclusion with Brook on the receiving end of brutal combination up against the ropes. Not being able to take further punishment, his trainer Dom Ingle waved the white towel. His brave effort into the unknown was over. Leaving the ring brook certainly took many positives from the whole event, being able to last 5 rounds with the GGG was an achievement in itself, with many doubting his ability to withstand the brutal power of Golovkin for so long. The Special One’s display certainly entertained the viewers from around the world something which is no mean feat. He left a proud man that’s for sure. Looking to the future there are many possibilities for the 30-year-old fighter. A domestic super clash

against Amir Khan, who also is coming back off a loss would certainly capture the imagination of the public with a certain animosity between the pair. Many have regarded that Khan has been eager to avoid a domestic clash with Brook, with his performance last weekend don’t be surprised if that to carries on for a while. With the looming clash between Liam Smith and Canelo Alvarez there comes another opportunity to fight the best. With a chance at fighting the winner between the two; the road ahead certainly looks like bright for the Sheffield star. While as for Triple G, the unified Middleweight champion will have plenty of options with many fighter’s eager for a chance to trade blows with one of the most dangerous fighters in the world. Chris Eubank Jnr was very vocal of his desire to fight the Kazakh. Having not signed the paperwork the fight didn’t materialise leaving Eubank ruing his missed opportunity; allowing the special One to jump the que. This time Eubank’s team know they must act rather quick if they’re really serious.

tiny twitch was enough to impart some ‘life’ into the lure. Wham! Another perch was onto it like a shot, and a few more followed before it was time to move to a different swirl. Again, the lure was left to flutter in the current, and again, perch after perch couldn’t get to it fast enough! I had half an hour or so of intense action, searching each promising spot, before moving on to the next, and catching perch in all of them. Don’t get me wrong, they were not big fish, the best a mighty 10oz, but to be able to fish with such accuracy, delicacy and subtlety on such a dinky river, is a fantastic way to spend an hour or two just enjoying

MIXED EMOTIONS FOR STUBBS Manager Alan Stubbs had mixed emotions following last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Bristol City, but gave credit to his side’s effort after a pulsating game at AESSEAL New York Stadium. The Millers moved into a two goal lead after goals from Izzy Brown and Greg Halford, but a strong second half showing from the visitors saw them claim a point after goals from Tammy Abraham and Bobby Reid. Despite being frustrated at losing a two goal advantage, Stubbs was pleased with his side’s effort and application to bounce back from their defeat at Barnsley. “We find ourselves two up and the second one was a bit fortunate, but then we’ve had a couple of chances to make it 3-0 and they’re the important ones,” Stubbs said after the game. “That would completely kill the game but even then the lads have put a lot of effort in, and I thought they gave us a good response to our last result and it was what I was looking for in terms of that but obviously not the result. “We go again on Wednesday and we’ve got another home game and one we’ll be trying to take three points from. It’s going to be a

long season and there are a lot of big clubs in the division that have improved and spent a considerable amount of money.” Late on both sides created chances to win the game with City substitute Jamie Paterson hitting the post, and Millers debutant Dael Fry headed just wide following a corner. Despite being pegged back, the Millers remain unbeaten in the league on home soil with Nottingham Forest next on the menu this coming Wednesday night. “We’ve got to make sure we compete and ensure that we do well at home and pick up the maximum amount of points that we can and if we do that we’ll give ourselves a very good chance,” Stubbs added. “At 2-0 it looked like it was going according to plan. We’re a bit fortunate with the second goal, but then we’ve had a couple of really good opportunities to kill the game but we never took them. “We gave a silly foul away and that’s led to their goal that’s got them back in the game, and given them a lift and something to go after and they pinned us back in the second half. “You have to realise that Bristol City are a good team that have spent a lot of money, but when you’re 2-0 you’re disappointed not to take maximum points. “It’s always disappointing when you don’t see a game out but this is a very tough division and one that I feel now is as tough as what it ever has been.” Stubbs revealed that he was forced into two substitutions with Jon Taylor being withdrawn at half-time following a knee injury, whilst goalscorer Izzy Brown came off late with cramp. “I can’t fault the lads’ effort today and they all dug in right until the end when it wasn’t easy,”

Stubbs continued. “I’ll stick right behind the players all day long, you won’t get me coming out and criticising them because I’m right behind them and we go again on Wednesday. “Izzy has come off with an injury and he was a threat when he was on the pitch. Jon Taylor gives us an outlet in the first half with his pace and he comes off with an injury. “Jon has come off with a knee injury. It looks like he’s got an impact from a stud or a boot on it and he’s lost a bit of feeling in it, and he’s unable to carry on unfortunately. We’ll see how it is and how it settles down and look how he is for Wednesday.”

GAFFERS DELIGHT AT “RUTHLESS PERFORMANCE” Darren Ferguson felt Rovers had found their ruthless streak against Morecambe. Rovers clocked up their biggest win of the season, 5-1, to climb up to fourth and celebrate James Coppinger’s 500th senior appearance for the club in style. Ferguson said: “It was a good performance and result, we started the game very strongly. “We had a little lapse going into half-time to allow them back into the game, but we spoke about that at half-time and said ‘look, just keep moving the ball quickly’. It was causing them all sorts of problems. “The second-half was very good, with some good goals capped off by a great goal by Copps. It was a big day for the boy with 500 games for the club; it was a really top performance. “We got him a cake, wore the shirts in the warm-up. We knew how important it was to him, it shows how respected he is and we backed that up with a performance.” Andy Butler got Rovers off to a great start when he prodded home following a corner with four minutes on the clock. John Marquis also grabbed a double, with Matty Blair adding a stunning solo goal before Coppinger got a memorable goal to cap off his day of celebration. The match felt pretty perfect to Rovers fans who were there, especially when Marquis and Andy Williams hoisted Coppinger off the ground in celebration, but Ferguson felt there could have been even more goals. He added: “We should have got more goals. As a team we played really well. I wasn’t surprised and have been waiting for that to happen. We were ruthless, really ruthless, and that was the difference from last week.

“We have improved from last week against Crewe, especially in the last third with some good goals. “We look strong enough at the back. You have to say it was a good goal by Cole Stockton. But it was a good day, a good performance. “I didn’t think the Crewe performance was a poor one, in fact there were many positives to

take from it. What I said to the players was to make sure we improve in the final third, we did a lot of work in training on those areas and they have put it right on the matchday which is their job. “I enjoyed watching them. In a sign that the summer is coming to an end, the last midweek games of 2016 without floodlights took place last week. In addition, we had a busy Saturday fixture list. Premier Division Swallownest FC continued their excellent start to the season on the weekend, when they defeated second placed Athersley Recreation Reserves 2-1 at Sheerien Park. Swallownest lead the embryonic table, with five wins from five games played. Athersley had previously beaten Swinton Athletic 2-1 at the same venue midweek. Denaby United and Houghton Main played out a fascinating nine goal thriller at Balby Carr Community Academy on Wednesday night. Houghton Main took all three points with a 5-4 win, with goals from Adam Stead (2), Chris Sambrooke and Ben Day (2). Denaby played in another thriller on the weekend, when they beat Millmoor Juniors 3-2 at home. Steve Ellor starred in both games for Denaby scoring five times across the two games. Houghton Main were beaten 2-1 on Saturday by AFC Penistone Church, by goals from Tim Council and Mitch Savage. Denaby Main claimed their first point of the season, when they drew 3-3 with Wombwell Main midweek. Swinton Atheltic’s poor start to the season continued on Saturday, as they were beaten 5-0 by Jubilee Sports at Chaucer School. Elsewhere, Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves and Handsworth Parramore Reserves drew 1-1 at the Look Local Stadium. Division One It was a very good week for Brinsworth Whitehill who registered back-to-back wins. Firstly goals from Greg Mason (2) and Martin Jones (2) gave them a 4-0 home win against High Green Villa. Then at the weekend, they beat Millmoor Juniors Reserves 6-1 at Grange Park. The wins take Brinsworth top with 12 points from their opening four games. Wickersley FC sit just a point off the pace after an equally good week. They opened their week with a 2—0 away win over Caribbean Sports, ending it with a big 6-1 win at Wickersley School against Davy FC. A brace from Dan Beech inspired Sheffield Bankers to a 3-1 win over Grimethorpe Sports at the Hillsborough Park Arena. South Kirkby Colliery maintained their 100% start to the season, with a 3-1 away win against Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves at the MDC Sports Stadium. Oughtibridge WMFC made it three wins from four games, as they beat Silkstone United 3-1 at the Oughtibridge War Memorial Ground. Elsewhere AFC Dronfield were held at home by High Green Villa 3-3. Division Two North Stocksbridge Park Steels Development Squad claimed two wins this week to keep their 100% start to the season. They narrowly beat Hepworth United 1-0 on Wednesday, but were in emphatic form on the weekend when they beat South Kirkby Colliery Reserves 9-0. Both Giorgio Williams and Ryan Barlow scored twice to help Dodworth Miners Welfare FC to a 6-0 win over Houghton Main Reserves at Middlecliffe Lane. Dodworth registered another cleansheet on the weekend, when they were 2-0 winners against Wombwell Main Development Squad. Houghton Main Reserves bounced back from their defeat to Dodworth on Saturday, with a 2-1 away win over Euroglaze FC. Working Wonders claimed their first win in the County Senior League, when they beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves 5-2 on Saturday. Bawtry Town made it two wins from two, with a 3-0 win against Working Wonders at the Doncaster Athletics Arena. Division Two South Goals from Hayden Barnett, Jon Burns and Martin Rouane gave Swinton Athletic Reserves a 3-2 win over Sheffield Bankers Reserves. Swinton lead the Division Two South, with 15 points from six games. New Bohemians sit in second place. They were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Sheffield Bankers Reserves on Wednesday, but edged-out Maltby Main Reserves 4-3 on the weekend. Ryan Beck and Jacob Richard were both on target twice for the Bohemians.

WILDER ENCOURAGED AFTER THIRD STRAIGHT WIN Chris Wilder is encouraged to see the Blades moving swiftly up the League One table. Speaking after a third consecutive league victory, this time a 3-2 victory over AFC Wimbledon at The Cherry Records Stadium, Wilder is pleased to see his players converting good performances into points. Reflecting on the latest success, after goals from Matt Done, Billy Sharp and Mark Duffy, with his first for the club, Wilder remarked: “We’re getting into a good habits of winning matches and the players have shown many good characteristics playing away from home.

“We had a big chat on Friday morning about attitude and maybe some of the reasons this club has been in League One for a long time and also passing on our knowledge of what was coming from Wimbledon, they never gave up all afternoon. “It was a big test for us and I was delighted with the way we handled it. They didn’t create too much and we did, but there is still plenty to improve on. We really should have put the game to bed. “We started the game brilliantly and got ourselves two goals up, but a bit of sloppiness crept in and we took our foot off the gas when we really should have

been ruthless, but we’ve won the game and that was the aim.” The Blades boss added: “We had a few words with the players at half-time and they responded excellently, we got on the front foot and added a third goal and how Mark (Duffy) hasn’t taken home the matchball I will never know. “But he is creating and scored a great goal, we are also creating plenty of chances a team and we are moving in the right direction. “We’ve shown what we are about though, we knew what was coming and we’ve come through the other end, which pleases me a lot.”

BLADES AND TYKES STARS IN UNIQUE SPORTING CLASH Football and cricket will come together again at Bramall Lane. Famous names from Sheffield United and star players from Yorkshire Cricket, who are seeking their third County Championship on the trot, will meet in a unique sporting clash in aid of Tykes’ skipper Andrew Gale’s benefit year. A ‘Question of Sport’ style football and cricket quiz, hosted by Look North presenter Harry Gration, will feature Gale and Yorkshire playing colleagues Tim Bresman, Richard Pyrah and

Steve Patterson taking on Blades boss Chris Wilder, former defensive star Tony Kenworthy, United captain Billy Sharp and current midfielder Chris Basham. Both United and Yorkshire will be each announcing two further personalities to join their line-up for the event in the TC10 Lounge and International Bar at Bramall Lane on 20th October (7pm for a 7.45 start). Andrew Gale said: “I’m really looking forward to the evening. As a big football fan it’s great that Sheffield United are helping me out in

my benefit year. We haven’t got the brains of Britain in our team but hopefully we can get one over on the footballers!” Dave McCarthy, Sheffield United Operations Director, said: “It promises to be a great night for two great causes - Galey’s benefit and also our Former Players Association. There will be a superbly produced question and answer session on stage, an audience led Q&A with all the players, an auction and raffle, plus an opportunity to meet and mingle with the players from both teams in the bar after

the quiz.” Tickets are only £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s. VIP tickets, featuring front row seats, a

TWO ON TRIAL AT LANE WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH

Chris Wilder has taken two players on trial at Sheffield United in an attempt to bolster his first team squad. Chris Burke and Reece Brown have been training with the Blades for the past week in the hope of earning deals at the Lane. Burke, 32, had a loan spell at Rotherham United last season before his parent club Nottingham Forest released the Scottish winger. After the sale of Che Adams, and the change in Matt

Done’s position to be more predominantly a striker, Burke would provide some strength in depth on the wing. Brown, 24, is also seeking a permanent deal at the Blades, the defender spent 13 years at Manchester United before his release in 2013. Brown began his career as a youngster at the renowned Fletcher Moss Rangers, a club famous in the Manchester region for being a hotbed of young talent. Reece followed his brother

Wes, formerly of Manchester United and Sunderland, out of Fletcher Moss Rangers. The local side are also attributed

with discovering Danny Welbeck, Marcus Rashford and former-Blade, Danny Webber. The player has more recently had

personal invite to the pre-drinks reception and photographs with the teams are available on a first come first served

spells at Barnsley and Bury, before being released from Gigg Lane in the summer. Caolan Lavery is also expected to make his first team bow at Bramall Lane on Saturday as the Blades take on

basis. To book contact the Commercial Department on 0114 253 7200 or email commercial@sufc. co.uk

Peterborough United. After three straight wins for Wilder’s team and three goals in three for Blades captain Billy Sharp, it wont be easy for the former-Owl to walk straight into the starting XI.

THE BEST IS YET TO COME A major positive for Carlos Carvalhal last time out was the impact of his substitutes. Gary Hooper, Adam Reach and Will Buckley all made a positive contribution in the turnaround against Wigan that resulted in a 2-1 victory. Two minutes after Hooper’s introduction, the Owls went ahead through Fernando

Forestieri before Reach and Buckley’s arrival further strengthened the team. “We are now beginning to see the best of Gary Hooper which is good for us,” Carlos said.“As a coach, you are very happy when a player comes on for 30 minutes and effects the game, then when another goes on with 15 minutes and eight minutes and has an

influence. “It means we are all in the same boat pushing in the right direction.” He continued: “We have players that I am sure will do better with time, Buckley is a good example, same as Almen Abdi and David Jones also. “We believe they will be very important players for us during the season. “We believe that

2016/17

when some of our players know better the team, know better our way, know better the players, the club, they will get better and better. “This is normal in football but the signals Hooper gave in the Wigan game, and not just Hooper but Buckley and Reach too, was very positive.

FLETCHER HUNGRY FOR MORE Having scored his first goal in a Wednesday shirt, Steven Fletcher is aiming for more of the same moving forward. Fletcher found the target as the Owls hit back to beat Wigan on Saturday and the striker has also hailed the character in the squad. He said: “I saw it when I first came, you could tell this squad has some character about it. “We know we have the quality to get the goals – for example we could have had four or five in both of our last two games.” Having registered on

both the domestic and international front Fletcher netted for Scotland against Malta last week - the 29-yearold is aiming to hit the heights again in the Championship. He added: “Personally, I’m happy to get off the mark because I think I’ve been playing well but without scoring my first goal, so to get that on Saturday was a big relief. “It’s been a good little period so far after scoring for Scotland and even better if we can get another win against Bristol.”
