With 15 Green Flag Award-winning parks, more than any other authority in Yorkshire and the Humber, people in the city can now vote for one of them to be People’s Choice 2016. And as this year is the 20th Anniversary of the Green Flag award, for the first time the 10 parks across the country with the most votes will make up the People’s Choice Top Ten. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and

leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “We are pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to enjoying the great outdoors here in Sheffield, but I know that everyone will have their favourites. “Whether it’s a stroll through Manor Fields Park, a picnic in Norfolk Heritage Park, splashing around in Millhouses Park or the Peace Gardens, or kicking up the leaves in Ecclesall Woods, our parks are treasured throughout

the city. “With 15 Green Flag-awarded parks to choose from, in areas throughout the whole city I know that together we can make the top 10 list and encourage more people to visit us and enjoy spending time here in our beautiful parks here in The Outdoor City.” Sheffield’s Green Flagawarded parks are: Devonshire Green, Ecclesall Woods, Firth Heritage Park, Norfolk Heritage Park,

Celebrating 10 FAB-U-LOUS years, the Strictly Come Dancing Live UK Tour extravaganza is back on the road in January 2017 for 30 spectacular super-sized shows across the country including two nights at Sheffield Arena on Wednesday 25th & Thursday 26th January! Tickets go on general sale at 10am on Friday 23rd September priced from £38.50 including booking fee when booked online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk or through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56. Tickets booked in person at the Arena box office are priced from £36.75. BBC One’s hugely popular entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing returns to TV screens this month with a new exciting celebrity line-up and a host of breathtaking dance routines guaranteed to leave audiences spellbound. And Strictly’s Live Tour is no different - this must-see event for fans of all ages brings the magic of the TV show to an arena near you. This year’s tour will star TV Judges Len Goodman and Craig Revel Horwood. They will be joined on the judging panel by former Strictly professional dancer and winner of the 2006 series, Karen Hardy. The tour will also feature a brand new host, Countryfile’s Anita Rani, who was a semi-finalist in the 2015 series and a contestant on this year’s live tour. Craig Revel Horwood will direct the tour for the seventh year, creating all of the showbiz sparkle, breathtaking choreography and incredible live music that Strictly is famous for - audiences can experience everything that they love about the TV show live on stage. Head Judge Len Goodman said: “The live tour always has such a great atmosphere and the 10th anniversary tour will definitely be one to remember, especially as this will come as I complete my final

year on the TV series as Head Judge. Rest assured audiences, this tour will be a ten from Len!” Craig Revel Horwood added: “I am very pleased to be back on tour with legendary Len and also welcoming Karen to the tour’s judging panel. This 10th year is going to be bigger and better than ever before. We’ll be pulling out all the stops to make sure that this anniversary tour is the best yet!” This entertainment extravaganza will star many of the celebrities and professional dancers from the hugely anticipated 14th BBC One series, as they take to the dance floor and recreate their most popular TV dance routines. Details of celebrities and professional dancers appearing on tour will be announced over the coming months. The judges will provide their invaluable wisdom, advice and scores at each performance on tour. But not only are the celebrities and their dance partners competing for the judges’ scores, they will also be battling to win votes from the arena audiences, who can text vote via their mobile phones and ultimately have the power to decide who wins the coveted Glitterball Trophy at the end of each show. The tour has received rave reviews since it began in 2008 and this year’s live shows were no exception. The Sunday Telegraph heaped praise on the production and gave it a 5 star review, saying: “the Strictly juggernaut shows no sign of slowing down”. The Mail On Sunday and Metro agreed, both awarding glowing 4 star reviews. The Mail On Sunday said: “the overall standard of dancing was the highest I can recall”. Tickets go on general sale at 10am on Friday 23rd September in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www. sheffieldarena.co.uk.

Meadowhall is set to host the spectacular Herd of Sheffield Farewell Weekend next month as The Children’s Hospital Charity says a final goodbye to its much-loved elephants who are heading to pastures new. The 58 elephants will be marching off Sheffield streets before making a farewell appearance enmasse at Meadowhall on October 14th to October 16th. This special event will give visitors a chance to see all the elephants in their glory - from the Arctic Monkeys’ “AM”, signed and named after their 2013 hit album, right through to “SnookHerd”, autographed by a host of international snooker players celebrating the heritage of snooker in Sheffield. The Herd together makes the largest public art event the city has ever seen and the final Farewell promises to be the biggest and best send-off possible. Meadowhall itself sponsored three of the elephants, designed with the help of artist, illustrator and MC Kid Acne, children’s illustrator Lydia Monks and Sheffield artist Stephen McKay. Meadowhall will be the first and last time that The Herd will be in one place and open to the public, before being auctioned off to raise funds for The

Children’s Hospital on October 20th. The project was a joint collaboration between The Children’s Hospital Charity and Wild in Art. Money raised from the weekend will help fund a new multipurpose Fluoroscopy System for the hospital, a life-saving piece of equipment which is used to obtain real-time moving X-rays. The proposed machine is the current gold standard for the timely diagnosis and treatment of vascular trauma injuries and operates with as little radiation as possible, meaning the process is as safe as it can possibly be. As well as being a worthy fundraiser, the project was also designed to unite business, communities, artists and schools. It captured the imagination of the city with the 1.6m high fibreglass elephants individually designed to form part of a unique artistic trail across the city. Spanning more than 60 kms, the trail also included 72 smaller calves but these will not form part of this final outdoor exhibition. The Farewell Weekend runs for three days – Friday October 14 to Sunday October 16 inclusive, opening to the public on Friday at 1pm until 5pm. Saturday and Sunday opening times are 10am to 5pm. The Exhibition will be located in the Orange Zone Car Park, just outside the Argos entrance. Darren Pearce, Meadowhall Centre Director commented: “Meadowhall’s elephants have been extremely popular this summer with our visitors, but this is the only time the public will be able to see all the elephants from across the city in one location. It promises to be a spectacular sight.” Deborah Green, British Land Asset Manager, agreed: “We were delighted when Meadowhall was chosen to host the Farewell Weekend; it is going to be a very special weekend for the whole city and the team can’t wait to see all The Herd together for a fitting send off.” David Vernon-Edwards, Charity Director at The Children’s Hospital Charity said: “The Herd has been brilliant over the summer and it’s been amazing seeing so many people out and about in the city elephant spotting. We’re very pleased to be partnering with Meadowhall to give people one last opportunity to find any they might not have seen on the trail. We’ll be sad to see the elephants go but knowing that they will soon be auctioned off to raise vital funds for the hospital makes saying goodbye a bit easier!” For a chance to be part of The Herd Farewell Weekend event go to www.herdofsheffield.com. WINTER FUEL PAYMENTS 2016/7 PUBLIC TRANSPORT HAVE YOUR SAY! You could get between £100 and £300 tax-free to help pay your heating bills. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’. You’ll qualify for Winter Fuel Payment if you were born on or before 05 May 1953 (for winter 2016 to 2017 – this date changes every year) and you’ll be living in the UK throughout the week of 19 to 25 September 2016. Most payments are made automatically between November and December. You should get your money by Christmas. You usually get a Winter Fuel Payment automatically if you get the State Pension or another social security benefit (not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit). If you qualify but don’t get paid automatically, you’ll need to make a claim. Any money you get won’t affect your other benefits.

How to claim You can’t claim Winter Fuel Payment for 2016 to 2017 after 31 March 2017. You need to claim Winter Fuel Payment if you’ve not had it before and either of the following apply: • you don’t get benefits or a State Pension • you only get Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction or Child Benefit If you’ve claimed before You should get your Winter Fuel Payment automatically from the organisation that pays your benefits. Contact them if you have any questions or there’s a change in your circumstances. You can find their details on any letters they’ve sent you.

Claim for the first time Call the Winter Fuel Payment Centre to claim by phone. Winter Fuel Payment Centre Telephone: 03459 15 15 15 Textphone: 0345 606 0285 You’ll need to know: • your National Insurance number • your bank or building society details • your BIC and IBAN numbers if you live in the EEA or Switzerland • the date you were married or entered into a civil partnership (if appropriate) Payments can’t be made into a National Savings and Investments (NS&I) account unless you already get other benefits paid into the account. You’ll also need to say whether during the qualifying week of 19 to 25 September 2016 you’ll be: • in hospital getting free in-patient treatment • in a residential care home or Ilford Park Resettlement Home • in custody serving a court sentence Claim for the first time by post You can get the claim form online at:

The Combined Authority’s Transport Committee next meets on Mon 26-Sept at 2pm in Barnsley. These meetings are open to the public, but also webcast live & then archived in their library. The City Region’s Combined Authority met on 12-Sept, and decided to progress to the next stage of its Devolution deal involving a directly-elected regional Mayor from next year. One of his/her tasks would be to review how Public Transport works throughout the region, and identify any improvements. This Mayoral Combined Authority would get new government powers to introduce Franchising for local Bus services, which could mean changes to the deregulated regime which has operated for over 30-years. The Transport Committee is considering options available if/when a Devolution deal is implemented. Most of us want improved public services, but lack know-how on what changes may be necessary to achieve this. We elect representatives to act on our behalf & keep us informed. But if you are www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment/how-to-claim concerned that many politicians on these Committees don’t fully understand the If your claim is for 2016 to 2017 it must complex issues, and just “nod through” arrive by 31 March 2017. proposals drafted by unelected officials Send your claim to this address: without much discussion or scrutiny, why Winter Fuel Payment Centre not get involved? After all we may have Mail Handling Site A to live with the consequences for many Wolverhampton years. Perhaps we need a Citizens’ Panel WV98 1LR to check if our politicians are doing what they were elected for. What do you think? The Combined Authority also has an Overview & Scrutiny Committee which is next due to meet on 27-Oct. Its open meetings are webcast & archived in their showing what a full life people with different library. disabilities lead in our city, including a choir of people with dementia plus games for people Sheffield 50+ Public Transport Group

Cancer charity promote legacy giving with new ‘willpower’ video

A local cancer charity is raising awareness of the importance of leaving a lasting legacy in your will through the use of a brand new video. Weston Park Cancer Charity has produced a quirky video, featuring some of its most loyal supporters, which focuses on the impact of gifts left to the charity in people’s wills. The video, which will be used primarily on social media, will encourage supporters to think about leaving a legacy to the cancer charity after thinking of their closest family and friends. As much as 38% Weston Park Cancer Charity’s income comes from people kindly leaving a gift in their Will which means that as many as a third of vital projects would not go ahead without people choosing to support the charity in this way. Over the years, funds received by the cancer charity through legacy giving have helped improve the lives of thousands of cancer patients and enhanced the future of cancer services across the region. Stephanie Hill, former

Miss South Yorkshire and a student Radiographer at Weston Park Hospital, featured in the video after a close family friend chose to leave a generous donation in her will to the cancer charity before she lost her battle with bowel cancer. Dorothy Oldale from Greenhill, who was 94 when she passed away, arranged for a donation of £2,000 to be left to Weston Park Cancer Charity after being diagnosed with cancer, as well as leaving a jewellery pot to Stephanie. Family friend, Stephanie, whose mum, Elaine was Dorothy’s hairdresser for over 30 years, said, “Dorothy was a very passionate and independent lady and although she never married or had children, she lived her life to the full and enjoyed every minute. She has always admired the work of Weston Park Hospital and upon receiving a diagnosis of bowel cancer; she was even more motivated to leave something to the regions only cancer hospital.” “It’s an honour to be involved in the cancer charity’s new willpower video and I know Dorothy would have been incredibly

proud of me and our family’s continued support of the charity’s vital work.” In a bid to make will writing accessible and easy for its supporters, the cancer charity have teamed up with local solicitors, Irwin Mitchell, who are currently offering a heavily discounted Will writing service to cancer charity supporters as well as making a donation for each Will they write. Senior Fundraising Manager at Weston Park Cancer Charity, Helen Gentle said, “Legacy giving is extremely important to the cancer charity and provides a significant proportion of our yearly income. This enables us to invest in ground breaking research trials, innovative cancer treatments and enhance support services for cancer patients and their families.” “We hope that through the use of our new #willpower video, we will encourage those looking to support the cancer charity to consider amending or writing their will and really make a difference to the lives of over 18,000 cancer patients in our region.” If you would like to make a Will or update an existing

Will then visit www. wphcancercharity.org.uk/ leaving_a_gift_in_your_ will.html to take up this great offer and support your local cancer charity today. Watch Weston Park Cancer Charity’s WillPower video on YouTube now at: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=9kOwFvmpD4A Supporters are being encouraged to use the hashtag #willpower on social media when sharing or posting about the video. Recent research shows that more and more people are

choosing to leave a gift in their Will to benefit their favourite cause. The number of people choosing to remember a charity in this special way

increased by 6% last year as it becomes a popular way to support a cause close to your heart.

THUNDER ROAR INTO THE ARENA FOR NEW CITY HALL LIVE SHOW Live Nation is proud to announce that the mighty Thunder will be undertaking a UK tour in March 2017, calling in at Sheffield City Hall on Saturday the 18th. Tickets are on sale from 9am on Friday 23rd September from www.livenation.co.uk or www.ticketmaster.co.uk. These hotly anticipated dates will of course be packed with many of the hits from the band’s stellar history, but also tracks from their follow up to the 2015 Top Ten hit album ‘Wonder Days’, which was described by Classic Rock as, “Brilliant…a massive reminder that class is both timeless and incandescent”. The as-yet-untitled album is due to be released in February 2017. Since forming in 1989, the Londoners have established themselves among the UK’s most consistent attractions, notching up some twenty Top Fifty singles and cultivating a well-deserved reputation as consummate live performers. Having been feted by Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith and Whitesnake’s David Coverdale, their first two albums, ‘Back Street Symphony’ (1990) and ‘Laughing On Judgement Day’ (1992), both were certified Gold in the UK. With a lineage dating back

to the cream of British hard rock – Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, The Who and Deep Purple – and songwriting greats such as the Kinks, The Beatles and The Faces, the band’s sound is a timeless marriage of unforgettable melodies and sheer rock power. Frontman Danny Bowes said, “After the arena shows in 2015 and 2016, we decided when we played the UK again, it would be great to take it back to where people live, and this is our longest UK tour for years. We’re looking forward to playing in theatres again, and of course the new album will be out by then, so I’ll be relying on the fans to learn all the words, mostly so they can remind me when I muck them up”. Thunder are now bigger, better and more popular than ever before, Guitar & Bass called them simply, “One of the finest British rock bands around”. Thunder guarantee a good night for all, with their heady blend of uncompromising rock and roll, musicianship, great songs and showmanship; these shows are unmissable.

SPARE A THOUGHT FOR ROAD SAFETY AS PART OF PROJECT EDWARD South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is supporting a Europe wide Police initiative on 21 September in a bid to cut road deaths and improve road safety. The Partnership is urging all road users to pledge their support and play their part in putting safety first on the roads. The European Day Without A Road Death – or EDWARD for short – will see various activities

taking place to engage with road users and encourage them to sign the pledge at www.tispol.org/edward . This encourages everyone to use the roads in a safe and considerate manner. In particular, the pledge aims to discourage behaviours which have been found to be the main contributory factors in fatal road traffic collisions; speeding, not wearing a seat belt, using a mobile phone at the wheel and driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs. This week members of the Safer Roads team have delivered these messages to young drivers and riders as part of Freshers Week events in local colleges and have delivered the interactive “Drive for Life” presentation to young apprentices at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre at Catcliffe in Rotherham. Staff will also be visiting Parkgate Shopping Centre in Rotherham on Wednesday to talk to members of the public. There shoppers will be faced with a stark reminder of the dangers of drink driving when they come face to face with a crashed car – to illustrate the horrific results of what can happen if you drink and drive. The mangled Vauxhall Corsa has been obtained by the Safer Roads Partnership to be used as part of its annual drink-drive campaign. Joanne Wehrle, Safer Roads Education Manager said, “We want everyone to join together and help us to make every day a day without a death on the roads in South Yorkshire.”

Escape the Winter Blues as #BlackpoolHasItAll for Families Words by Marc Cooper

Last month myself and the family escaped to the west coast for the weekend. I left my ‘Kiss me quick’ hat at home, choosing to enjoy some indoor excitement on the first day our our trip instead of grabbing the bucket and spade then sitting on the beautiful beach as we decided to explore what Blackpool really had to offer the family. We were given a Blackpool resort pass, which allowed us entry to all the major attractions in the town for the weekend, so we planned on making the most of it. Visit Blackpool and Merlin Entertainments have teamed up and launched a 2016 campaign to prove #BlackpoolHasItAll for families to showcase Blackpool’s collection of world-renowned, family attraction brands and offers, and it was our pleasure to review the campaign. We started at the World Famous Madame Tussauds using our resort passes. We sought fame with Cheryl Cole, popped into the Rovers Return to have a quick pint with Ken and Deidre before doing a bushtucker trial with Ant and Dec in the I’m a Celeb jungle. The must have souvenir from Tussauds is having your own hand made into wax which is a surprisingly enjoyable experience.

Overall there is something for all the family at Tussards with the children loving to have their photos with Cheryl and Olly Murs.

Eating Out in Blackpool When you visit Blackpool you have to visit the world famous Harry Ramsden’s restaurant. Recently been re located into a large and spacious new restaurant which includes Gin & Craft Beer bars and a standalone Cocktail Bar for adults, we decided to opt for the large Haddock & Chips (£13.25) which is cooked in Harry’s special secret recipe batter, served with mushy peas and a lemon wedge, This is a must place to eat when you visit Blackpool this year! We were thankful that the weather had brightened up on day two for a morning trip to Blackpool Zoo, this is the only attraction we couldn’t use our amazingly cheap weekend tram ticket. It takes about 10 minutes in the car from Blackpool Sea front. With more than 1,500 animals and engaging talks throughout the day it gives any Zoo in the UK a run for its money. During our visit, our favourite animals were the elephants and giraffe.

Blackpool Illuminations run from now up to 6th November Full details can be found at illuminations.visitblackpool.com

BLACKPOOL there was plenty for the family to enjoy. Obviously a trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach would not be complete without going on The Big One, famous for its stomach churning 205ft drop, remains one of the best rollercoasters in the UK. More information regarding the Merlin Entertainments pass can be found at www.merlinentertainments.biz

Our final stop was Blackpool Full information regarding Blackpool Pleasure Beach where the addition Tourist information can be found at of Nickelodeon Land, five years ago, www.visitblackpool.com really makes the theme park a more welcome proposition for families with young children. Many of the rides children can go on regardless of their height as long as they are with an adult, meaning

ANGLER’S CORNER

approached by a young man, immaculately clad in bright white trainers, trucker cap, copious amounts of tattoos, and generally looking sharp; with Clint Walker definitely not what I would expect an angler to be wearing… far too smart! He watched me land Another great week, for a number of another fish, then explained that he was new to reasons… I started this week with a return visit to a water where I can do no wrong at the fishing, had sampled a couple of local venues, moment, fishing the same peg, using the same but wanted to learn more; an honest admission, and refreshing to hear. As we talked about the tactics, and catching almost the same fish, so fishing, he was obviously interested in our why did I bother? session, so I showed him my simple rig, clarified In truth, I went with a friend, to share some how it was supposed to work and why I used it, ideas, generally have a chat about fishing, and then discussed bait, before it was time to place enjoy the sunshine, so to me, that was reason the rig in the water… Within a couple of minutes, enough, and I’m glad I did. As we angled and the alarm squealed once more, and another exchanged views, each of us hit into a string reasonable carp scarpered out of the margins, of decent double figure carp, and as the day firmly hooked. I invited Greg to pick up the rod progressed, and our swims got even more packed and play the fish to the waiting net, and after a with fish, we noticed more people stopping to couple of pointers, he was very pleased to land take note and watch... a scraper double which was quickly unhooked. I’m always glad to see others take an interest He asked if he could have a catch shot, which in fishing, as our pastime desperately needs was duly taken before the fish went back to the newcomers, so I was happy to meet two year water, and then he declared that the fish he had Zach, who was with his childminder. Zach and just landed was a new personal best! We shook his minder (along with another young lady aged hands, and Greg and his girlfriend went on their about two) watched as I landed a fish, returned way around the lake to chat to other anglers… it, and reset the rod. We had a very brief chat, as another great result! Since then, I Greg and I Zach told me he fished with his daddy, before my have become ‘friends’ on social media, so I win alarm went again and I lifted into another decent too! double. I invited Zach to play the fish (whilst As I packed up, I glanced across at the tiny river holding onto the back of him!) and helped him which runs across the back of the lake. Neither tame, and steer, a good mirror to the waiting net. my fishing chum Andy or I had ever fished it, After unhooking the fish, treating the hook hold and were unsure what resided within, but fish and bathing the carp, Zach and his childminder were topping, so there was obviously something enjoyed a close up view of one of the smashing to explore at a later date. With that in mind, I fish in this particular water. Eventually, we parted returned four days later with a couple of pints on good terms, with Zach promising to catch of maggots, a loaf of bread, a float rod and a more fish with daddy as he walked away; a good centrepin reel to see what I could find out… result. The River Churnet at this point is a small river, Things got better later in the afternoon, as I was perhaps a few metres across, and was carrying

a bit of extra water and colour after the storms of the preceding days. I wanted to ‘long trot’ the numerous glides, so set up an ancient Ivan Marks stick float I’d found at a car boot sale, loaded it with 3BB in total, and plumbed the depth at just over two feet; perfect! A size 18 held a couple of maggots, and as I’d been flicking grubs in constantly since my arrival, I added a few more to the swim, and dropped the float in to follow… It slid away within seconds, and a stonking trout turned out to be the culprit! Beautifully marked, a real wild brown trout is a joy to behold, bright red spots aplenty, and in perfect condition too… a great start! A few more maggots went for a swim, and once more, the float was flicked to the head of the swim and allowed to match the flow of the current before it slid away again, and another stunning fish, and this time a purple and lilac grayling came to the net. I missed the next few bites, but it was evident that this tiny river was alive with fish, and some of them were of some quality too. By changing to a single maggot, I started to catch some lovely, silvery dace, before adding two more gentiles to the hook to take more trout and more grayling. Within an hour or two of feeding the swim, I’d built up quite a

haul of pristine river fish using the most basic of tactics, and then I was delighted to find that roach had moved upstream from cover, and I was catching some beautiful fish of almost half a pound! The fun lasted until the sun was high in the sky, and then sport slowed. It had been a couple of hours of utter joy, mending the line, matching the flow, holding back the float and generally exploring each nook and cranny with a delicate stick float. I really enjoyed fishing the ‘pin too, watching the spool pay out line with little more than a finger to control it, and then the directness of the battle as the fish took line and charged around the swim… it really was blissful fishing. I’m always pleasantly surprised by small river fishing, a bit of stealth and simple tactics and you can have a really great day fishing; they don’t have to be monsters to be enjoyable, and I defy you to find more fun on the bank, than trotting a float in the sunshine, whilst catching superbly conditioned fish from a beautifully clean river… try it, you will love it!

STUBBS FRUSTRATED WITH LAPSES LOCAL FOOTBALL by Michael Clarke

Rotherham United manager Alan Stubbs admitted frustration after individual mistakes were to blame for his side’s 4-2 defeat at Blackburn Rovers. The Millers made the perfect start after going in front through Danny Ward, but goals from Craig Conway and Marvin Emnes gave the hosts a half-time lead. After Ben Marshall put Rovers 3-1 in front, Ward bagged his second to give the Millers a lifeline, but a stoppage time fourth from Sam Gallagher sealed the points for Owen Coyle’s side. Stubbs said after the game that he was concerned with individual errors, and stressed that his players must do better in the future. “Some of our defending today is really poor,” Stubbs said. “It is individuals not doing their jobs, but we have to do better as a team. There is only us that can put that right, and in a lot of the goals we are beating ourselves by our decision making, being on the wrong side and lapses of concentration. “They are individual things that players have to take responsibility for. I’ll keep working with them, I’ll keep backing them 100% but

you have to look at yourself sometimes, it has to come from within.” Stubbs was pleased with his side’s attacking threat, with the Millers creating opportunities before and after half-time. But the Millers boss was frustrated at his side for cancelling out their threat up front with poor defending for three of Rovers’ four goals. “When we do get the ball in and around their box we have players who can hurt teams, but you look at the goals and we have to do much better,” he added. “You have to have a bit about you to not keep making mistakes week in, week out. I am stating the obvious but we need to do better individually and as a team. You get yourself in a 1-0 lead and before we know it we are 2-1 down, and it is just through players not doing what they are supposed to do and that is the

frustrating thing about it. “To be fair to their lad he puts one in the top corner, it is a great strike. But we should have been a lot closer to him. The other three goals I can’t defend because they were poor goals to give away. My patience was already running thin, but it is starting to get even thinner. They players have had opportunities so they should have no complaints if they are left out of the team. “They have to look at themselves because they have done it (against Forest), but they have to be better overall. We cannot go from giving a performance like we did during the week, to then gift Blackburn the victory today. “We got ourselves back into the game at 3-2 and anything can happen. But before you know it we shoot ourselves in the foot again. That is really frustrating.”

ROVERS GO SECOND IN THE TABLE Darren Ferguson felt there were still areas for Rovers to improve on after the win over Newport County AFC. James Coppinger and Andy Williams scored to seal the 2-0 success, Rovers’ six win in their past seven competitive games. Ferguson said: “It was a very good win and clean sheet. The result and clean sheet were the most pleasing things. Performance wise we set certain standards and we didn’t get to anywhere near the level we can. “Even when it was 2-0 I never felt comfortable, but we have seen it out, kept a clean sheet and it is another three points. “We want to improve in every game, but it was hard to improve on last week because that was an excellent performance. We deserved to win the game, but the players know next week we’ll have to be better next week against Luton.” The visitors find themselves in the lower reaches of Sky Bet League Two, but Ferguson felt they had put up a good fight. He said: “We were up against a team who will cause you problems. We knew it wouldn’t be easy. “They really went for it, they played with four up front at the end. They had a right go and had one or two opportunities, so I never really felt comfortable and I don’t think the fans will have. “But you should always be happy with a win, because you never know when the next will come.” The return of Mathieu Baudry to the bench was a talking point for supporters, and Ferguson confirmed the defender is likely to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly match on Tuesday. He added: “He’ll play on Tuesday as will one or two others so we are getting there with injuries. “The numbers are coming back, and those who are coming back have experience. But the ones that have been playing have been excellent, they’ve done really well.”

Netherlands, following a 7-0 win over Serbia back in June. England head coach Mark Sampson said: “We want to focus on playing European opposition between now and next summer’s Euros. There are some excellent nations who will be at the tournament and the more experience we can have playing them, the better prepared we’ll be. “We’re pleased that France have agreed to come over and play us. We haven’t beaten them for a long time so we’re looking to change that. “They are the third best team in the world so it is a great test for us and if we’re going to do well at the Euros we’ll have to beat teams like France on the way. “Although it’s a friendly we’ll be approaching this game in a very competitive way as part of our tournament preparations. “We’re looking forward to playing at Doncaster. The area has such a big women’s football history and the Keepmoat is a great stadium so it will hopefully make for a great game.” Gavin Baldwin, chief executive of Club Doncaster added: “We are delighted to welcome Mark Sampson and the England Women’s team to the Keepmoat Stadium as they take on France in what should be a fantastic game.

Gameweek six of the 2016/17 season in the County Senior League brought around just one matchday. On Saturday 23 league games took place, plus one game in the League Cup. League Cup 1st Round Denaby United and Houghton Main Reserves played out the last 1st Round tie in the League Cup at Old Road on Saturday. Denaby showed their Premier Division pedigree by winning the tie 7-1 thanks to goals from Aiden Oakley (3), Ross Johnson (2) and Ainsley Finney (2). Denaby will face Brinsworth Whitehill away in the 2nd Round on Saturday 15th October. Premier Division League leaders Swallownest FC faced one of their toughest challengers of the season thus far on the weekend, when they face Houghton Main at Swallownest Miners Welfare. Swallownest were made to dig deep, but a single goal from Jay Short was enough to give the fledgling leaders a 1-0 victory. Swallownest have won all of their first six league games to take them seven points clear. Handsworth Parramore Reserves are into second place, after goals from Ryan Lee and Harry Bamforth gave them a 2-0 home win over Denaby Main. Defending champions Frecheville got back to winning ways after two draws, with a 5-2 home win over Swinton Athletic. Frecheville are third, with an almost identical record to Handsworth, but with one less goal scored. The ever reliable Tim Council scored the only goal to give AFC Penistone Church a 1-0 win against Wombwell Main at the Memorial Ground. Athersley Recreation Reserves and Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves played out a five goal thriller at Sheerien Park. Stocksbridge showed great character to recover from 2-0 down to win take all three points with a 3-2 win. A luke Marsden hat-trick helped fire North Gawber Colliery to a 5-2 win over Millmoor Juniors at Woolley Miners Welfare. Division One It was an early top of the table clash at Wickersley School, where second placed Wickersley FC hosted leaders Brinsworth Whitehill. The game fell in Brinsworth’s favour, as goals from Brad Davis and Daniel Duff gave them a hard-fought 2-1 away win and help them maintain their 100% record. AFC Dronfield claimed their third win of the season, with a 4-2 away win over MIllmoor Juniors Reserves. The win takes Dronfield up to fourth position. Two goals each from Kai Hancock and Stevie Bennett were enough to give Grimethorpe Sports a 4-0 away win against Oughtibridge WMFC. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 marked their first home win of the season in style, as they beat Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves 6-2. Davy FC registered their second point of the season, as they held High Green Villa to a 2-2 draw at the new Thorncliffe FA Hub. Caribbean Sports’ winless start continued to the fifth match, as they drew 3-3 with Slikstone United at Silkstone Recreation Ground. Division Two North A Rob Wilson brace gave FC Graceholme a 2-1 away win against Hepworth United. Graceholme sit atop the Division Two North, with six wins from six games. WILDER DELIGHTED AFTER POSH VICTORY Blades boss Chris Wilder was ‘delighted’ with a fourth consecutive victory in EFL League One, this time it was Peterborough United put to the sword at Bramall Lane on Saturday. Matt Done’s firsthalf strike proved decisive against Grant McCann’s Posh, a win that saw United rise to sixth place. And Wilder was understandably pleased, he remarked: “It is another very pleasing win against dangerous opposition, who have several talented players. “We recognised their strengths in our analysis of them and we were resolute

and determined and throughout the game created the better chances. “We played well and deserved the victory, but credit to Simon (Moore) who makes a terrific save with the game at 1-0 and overall he was excellent and commanding. “Peterborough will cause a lot of teams so many problems with the way they play, so credit to them and their manager, but I’m delighted we’ve kept our winning run going.” The Gaffer added: “It was always going to be an open game and both goalkeepers were at their best, there were a lot of chances, but we defended well

when we had to and limited them to a lot of long-range efforts. “I enjoyed the game and I’m sure our supporters will have enjoyed what they’ve seen too. We attacked when we could, played when possible and most importantly defended properly against a side that is always in the game with the shape they play. “Sometimes you just have to see a game out, Peterborough play off the cuff at times and when you come under periods of pressure, you just have to be strong, committed and organised, thankfully we were.”

LAVERY SCORES AS UNDER 23S DEFEAT QPR United’s U23s deservedly returned to winning ways with a dominating display against QPR on Monday afternoon. Caolan Lavery netted an early penalty, before further strikes from Ben Whiteman, David Brooks and substitute Jordan Hallam put the Blades in complete control, with Ebere Eze’s late goal proving nothing more than scant consolation for the R’s. Trialist Reece Brown completed a full game, whilst Cameron Stewart who is also training with the club,

played 77 minutes of the fixture at Imperial Harlington. Inside the opening 10 minutes there were chances at both ends. Lavery was denied well by Lumley, whilst in response Darbyshire forced Ramsdale into a smart save. But three minutes later, LAVERY wasn’t to be stopped. Having used his pace to get in behind the home defence he drew a foul in the box from Frost, before dusting himself down to send Lumley the wrong way from the spot. The Blades doubled the lead within a minute, as

WHITEMAN timed his run perfectly to head home Chapman’s cross. Two very nearly became three, but Lumley rushed out of his goal to deny Lavery his second. The Blades were bossing the game and on the stroke of half-time, the R’s were again indebted to Lumley who made two reflex saves in a crowded penalty area to keep the scoreline respectable. The early exchanges of the second period were scrappy, although the home side through Bowler and then Folkes had a couple of speculative

efforts on goal, but neither seriously troubled Ramsdale. The Blades burst back into life in the 71st minute to gave themselves an unassailable advantage, after Chapman had been denied at the near post by Lumley, the home goalkeeper

DEFENCE SHAPING UP WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH

After yet another summer of turmoil at the Lane, in which the club was left with no centre backs when Chris Wilder arrived as new boss, the defensive line is finally taking shape. In recent history the inability to keep clean sheets has cost United dearly, fans were becoming tired of seeing a defence built primarily around loan players. However, after only taking the job in May, Wilder has been able to build a defence with a more permanent

foundation. The introduction of Jake Wright, who arrived following his release from Oxford United, has been a revelation. His ability to marshal loan signing EbanksLandell and new boy Jack O’Connell is a huge reason to why the Blades have gone four unbeaten. In fact, the recent upturn in the Blades’ form began as Wright took his place in the heart of the defence against his former club last month. The influence of new ‘keeper, Simon

Moore, can also not be understated, the 26-year-old was key in the Blades winning all three points against Peterborough United on Saturday. Moore has been instrumental in the

was powerless to prevent BROOKS from blasting home and in the 80th minute substitute HALLAM got in on the act to make it four. The only downside to a near perfect afternoon in the capital was the late concession of a goal to Eze, but it mattered

in the forthcoming season. A series of poor displays at the start of the campaign current run of form has left his future in after replacing George serious doubt with not even a substitute long between the spot afforded to the sticks. After signing 22-year-old. a new two-year deal Reece Brown, 24, in the summer it appeared as though Long would be United’s number one

not as the Blades notched a second win of the season and a first since the opening day. Blades: Ramsdale, R. Brown, A. Brown, Whiteman (Gilmour 55), Cummings, Semple, Stewart (Hallam 77), Reed, Lavery (K. Smith 40), Brooks, Chapman. Unused: Charlesworth, Perryman.

will find out this week if he has earned a contract at Bramall Lane. The formerBury defender was on trialing alongside Chris Burke, but the former-Rotherham winger has left the club.

CARLOS CALLS FOR OWLS EFFICIENCY Carlos Carvalhal says Wednesday must continue to create the chances but improve their efficiency in front of goal. Having defeated Wigan and Bristol City ahead of the Saturday’s defeat at Birmingham, the head coach wants to see more of the Owls’ positive offensive work rewarded with

goals. Although Wednesday went ahead through Gary Hooper in the second half at St Andrew’s, the Blues hit back to punish the Owls for missed chances and Carlos said: “We must continue to do our work, try to do better offensive efficiency in the next games and the things

that are natural will come to us. “We will win games where we don’t create as many chances but take a 1-0. “This isn’t happening at the moment, we are creating a lot of chances but we are not scoring the goals in the percentage we expect.” The Owls are back in action on Saturday looking for a third

straight home win over Nottingham Forest and Carlos continued: “We are playing very good football on the pitch, we try to press the opponent and try to create clear chances to goal. “We are frustrated but not unhappy and we are proud of the players and their attitude.”

OWLS MILESTONE

“He can do everything, he’s good in the air, he’s strong, he can bring other people into play and he works hard. That is a big must for this team.” Along with the goals, Fletcher also claimed an impressive assist for fellow striker Gary Hooper on Saturday at St Andrew’s with an audacious backheel off the deck and Bannan continued: “I don’t want to put any pressure on him but he’s a top striker and a big player for our team.”

LOOVENS LOOKS FORWARD Glenn Loovens made his long-awaited return to the Owls’ starting line-up on Saturday at St Andrew’s. The skipper has been sidelined with a foot injury since preseason but made his first appearance of the campaign last weekend. Now back in the thick of the action, the 32-yearold is keen to move on and look forward to helping the team climb the Championship. “It never comes at the right time,” Loovens said. “It’s very important to have a good preseason but things happen. “It was a problem I needed to fix but I’m glad it’s behind me now and I can look forward again. “You always want to be

with the team and not on the sidelines but it’s done with now and I can focus on playing and helping this club fight for points.” Despite having largely controlled the clash with Birmingham, Wednesday must now pick themselves up after defeat in the second city. Wednesday face Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough on Saturday and he continued: “I don’t think we are far away from where we want to be, in terms of how we are playing. “Carlos said the Brentford game was a turning point, we won two games after that one and now we must get back to that at home this weekend.”

BANNAN HAILS FLETCHER IMPACT LEE SET TO REACH Barry Bannan has hailed the impact of Scotland team mate Steven Fletcher. Having made a strong start to the latest stage of his career with Sheffield Wednesday, Bannan believes Fletcher can go on to be a fantastic signing for the club. The experienced striker has scored three goals this month, one for Scotland in their World Cup qualifier with Malta and two for the Owls. “Fletcher is brilliant,” Bannan said. “His allround game as a striker is brilliant.

35

Kieran Lee is one game shy of making 150 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday. The in-form midfielder clocked up his 149th outing for the club on Saturday at St Andrew’s. The 28-year-old joined Wednesday in summer 2012 and made his debut in September of that year in a clash with Bolton at Hillsborough. He made 26 and 29 appearances respectively in his first two seasons with the Owls and bagged his maiden goal on the final day of the 2013/14 campaign away at Ipswich. That strike at Portman Road provided the spark for Lee in front of goal and he went on to score six the following term

from 34 appearances – the most memorable of which was this stoppage time winner against Rotherham at The New York Stadium. Lee made the most SWFC appearances in the 2015/16 campaign, featuring 52 times for Carlos Carvalhal’s side and scored a further seven goals, one of which came in the playoff semi final first leg against Brighton. During last week’s clash with Bristol City, he scored his first goal of the season in the 96th minute to clinch a dramatic 3-2 win. And Lee is now in line to post his 150th appearance as the Owls host Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
