Both funds are aimed at unlocking key strategic development opportunities and providing economic infrastructure.

Did you hear about the man who bent down to pick up a seive and strained himself? People said I’d never get over my obsession with Phil Collins. But take a look at me now. This morning at work my boss told me to “have a great day” So I went to the pub. Singing in the shower is all fun and games until you get shampoo in your mouth... Then it just becomes a soap opera. My girlfriend dumped me because of my obsession with plants. I asked “where’s this stemming from petal?” School phoned and said my son’s been lying. I said, tell him he’s very good, I haven’t got any kids. I just noticed on the bookies window it said ‘Open on a Sunday 11-2’. I’ll have a tenner on that. He was open last Sunday. Two windmills are standing in a field and one asks the other, “What kind of music do you like?” The other says, “I’m a big metal fan” I’m fed up with my mates 3 times now they’ve agreed to go to a Whitesnake gig with me and then not showed up!! Here I go again on my own!

SHEFFIELD’S MARCO’S NEW YORK ITALIAN LAUNCHES NEW MENU Diners at Marco’s New York Italian in Sheffield can look forward to a host of exciting new dishes, as the restaurant unveils its brand new mouth-watering menu. Located on the site of the former West Bar Green Police Station, alongside the Hampton by Hilton Sheffield hotel, Marco’s New York Italian is a concept that combines quality with comfort, allowing guests to enjoy traditional American Italian cuisine in a modern dining environment. Inspired by Marco Pierre White’s Italian heritage and love for New York, the new menu - which launches on Tuesday 27 September - uses Marco’s famous cooking techniques to create a unique dining experience that appeals to guests of all ages. Old favourites including the Baked New York Italian Meatballs, Lasagne Bolognese Al Forno and Macaroni Di Funghi will be preserved, and joined by mouth-watering additions such as the Chicken Milanese Burger and New Orleans Seafood Kebab. Also featuring on the new menu is The Italian Burger – a dish bursting with rich Italian flavours that truly reflect the beauty of traditional cooking done well. Topped with smoked mozzarella, beef tomato, sun-blushed tomatoes and pesto, the juicy burger sits perfectly inside a fresh brioche
bun, and qualifies itself as a dish worthy of a place on the impressive menu at Marco’s New York Italian. Other new dishes include the Classic Spaghetti Napoletana, the flavoursome Seared Seabream with Caponata, and The Long Island Seafood Platter. Mihai Tunariu, restaurant manager, said: “We are extremely excited to have launched our new menu, which combines guests’ favourite dishes and a host of delicious new dishes, expertly prepared by our talented chefs. “Our new menu gives our returning guests a selection of exciting new dishes to try, while guaranteeing an enjoyable experience for diners who are visiting Marco’s New York Italian for the first time.” Commenting on Marco’s New York Italian, Marco Pierre White said: “If I had to choose only one cuisine to eat for the rest of my life, it would be Italian. My mother was Italian and I spent a lot of time in Italy with her when I was a boy.”

1181 NEWS & INFORMATION
A BLOOMING SUCCESS FOR SHEFFIELD The awards cabinet is growing for Sheffield’s new Grey to Green regeneration programme – after it scooped two coveted Yorkshire In Bloom awards. The Grey to Green scheme, which has turned a redundant former inner ring road into a series of innovative meadows, public spaces and art whilst also providing flood prevention, won the 2016 Yorkshire Rose Environmental Quality Award, the top environmental award in Yorkshire, as well as a Gold Award in the City Centre category in an awards ceremony held in York last week. The project has also been shortlisted for several national awards. The awards were presented to Sheffield City Council’s project client Lucia LorenteArnau and landscape architect Duncan Bradbury by Prunella Scarlett from the Royal Horticultural Society. The Grey to Green Corridor has transformed the setting of Sheffield’s Riverside Business District, developing the former inner ring road into an eyecatching display of public art, benches, a new sustainable urban drainage system (SUDs) and plant beds based on techniques developed at the Department of Landscape, University of Sheffield, by Professor Nigel Dunnett, one of the main designers behind the wildflower landscapes in London’s Olympic park, and the Royal Horticultural Society’s Ambassador for ‘Greening Grey Britain’ The drainage system has been designed by the Council and leading national expert Robert Bray to help flood relief in this part of the city by soaking up surface
water run off to the river within the ‘flood zone’. The overall Grey to Green project will eventually transform 1.2 kilometres of redundant roads into attractive new linear public spaces, improving the links between the Riverside Business District, Victoria Quays, Kelham Island and the rest of the city centre. Phase 1 of the scheme started in April 2015 and cost £3.4 million and was funded by the new Sheffield City Region Investment Fund (SCRIF) - the first project to be supported from this pot - and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Both funds are aimed at unlocking key strategic development opportunities and providing economic infrastructure. Councillor Mary Lea said: “The Grey to Green scheme has transformed a less heralded part of the city centre into an eye-catching display of colour and exciting public art. These awards are well deserved and point the way ahead for the rest of the scheme, with West Bar itself currently undergoing a considerable transformation.” Professor Nigel Dunnett, from Sheffield University, said: “It is so exciting to see Sheffield take a leadership role in implementing large-scale innovative city greening. It’s been a privilege to apply our experience and research at the University to help develop new plantings that combine major environmental benefits with a beautiful and colourful meadow-like appearance.”
DEVOLUTION - THE FACTS FOR OLDER PEOPLE Do you want to know more about how devolution will affect Sheffield? The October Sheffield 50+ meeting, which is held jointly with the Age Hub, is looking at what devolution means for our city. Devolution is a deal where the government gives the power and the funding to the City region, that is the whole of South Yorkshire and part of north Derbyshire, to make decisions on transport, planning, help into employment for harder-tohelp claimants as well as funding to be invested to build growth in our region.

There will also be an elected City region Mayor. Laurie Brennan of Sheffield City Council, will talk about what devolution means for Sheffield, particularly older people. Then there will be the chance for everyone to have their say and to ask questions. The meeting is designed so that we can let the council know our thoughts about the plans as they are putting them in place, rather than waiting until it happens then complaining about it!

28/09/2016 DRINK WISE, AGE WELL
Drink Wise, Age Well aims to help people make healthier choices about their drinking as they age. For some people alcohol can have a positive impact on their lives as part of socialising and relaxation. Many of us will enjoy alcohol as we get older and not experience negative effects. We are living longer, and many of us will have active and independent lives well into old age. However, sometimes it’s easy to find that having a drink is becoming less of a pleasure and more of a habit. Here is Clive’s story: “After retirement I found that I had time on my hands, my family had recently moved away so I joined a local social group. This involved going out and about, going to the races, to local events. It was great fun, but socialising with this group tended to involve alcohol and I found it hard to stop at one or two. I realised that my drinking had soon increased to levels where it was effecting my weight and mood. This then led onto me drinking away from the club and isolating myself, feelings of depression followed closely behind. After a real low point, I knew I needed to make changes. I heard about Drink Wise, Age Well, a project aimed at people my age and decided to take the plunge. A quick phone call and within a few days I received a visit at home from Jane, my worker. I have made some really positive changes over the last few weeks and with the help of Jane I’m feeling positive and starting to get involved with different activities, she’s even trying to convince me to go fishing next week”. Do you want to get out and meet new people, find new interests and share the things that are already important to you? We offer a range of events, courses and activities locally to interest you, such as exercise, cooking and arts classes, hobby workshops or courses to help you get the most out of life. If you would like to speak to someone about your own or a loved one’s drinking, DRINK WISE, AGE WELL offers advice and support for people in Sheffield aged over 50, call us on: 0800 032 3723

BLUES ROCK HERO JOE BONAMASSA RETURNS TO THE LOOK OF LOVE RETURNS SHEFFIELD ARENA If you have any news, reviews, releases/events you’d like us to cover please forward details to dave@mercurynewspaper.co.uk
TO SHEFFIELD CITY HALL A mere 34 years since the release of one of the landmark albums of the 80s, Sheffield New-Wave heroes ABC returned to the scene of their most resounding triumph with the release last May of ‘The Lexicon Of Love II’. To follow its release ABC are touring across the UK this October accompanied by the Southbank Sinfonia returning home to Sheffield with a show at the City Hall on Saturday 29th October. ABC will be performing the iconic debut album ‘The Lexicon Of Love’ in its entirety plus all the greatest hits and tracks from ‘The Lexicon Of Love II’ including BBC Radio 2 A listed single Viva Love. Sonically doffing its cap to the original, ‘The Lexicon of Love II’ features 10 brand new songs from the pen of ABC kingpin Martin Fry abetted by various musical cohorts. It might take a less innocent, more experienced view on affairs of the heart than its million selling predecessor, but it still concludes that all you need is love. Martin Fry said: “We performed a show at the Albert Hall a couple of years ago to mark the 30th anniversary of The Lexicon of Love. It struck me there and then that it was time to make a sequel. To explore those themes once again and to look at love through the eyes of a man in later life. Now the years have passed, my perspective on life and love has changed. I wanted to make an album that reflected that.” Foremost among Fry’s collaborators on the new album is Academy Award winning musician and
composer Anne Dudley, who arranged the strings on the original Lexicon and has been the long standing conductor on ABC’s critically acclaimed sold out orchestral shows. Anne has provided orchestral arrangements that give ‘The Lexicon Of Love II’ its signature sound, and has co written two of the key songs on the album: ‘The Love Inside The Love’ and ‘Brighter Than The Sun’. Tickets for ABC are now on general sale at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

Due to popular demand from fans throughout the UK, and with only a limited amount of tickets left for Joe Bonamassa’s two London Royal Albert Hall shows in April 2017, the celebrated blues-rock guitarist and singer-songwriter, has added three more concerts to his April 2017 UK tour including a Sheffield date performed in the Arena’s intimate Steel Hall setting on Monday 24th April 2017. Tickets go on general sale at 9am on Friday 30th September, priced £60.50, £71.50 & £82.50 including booking fee when booked online at www. sheffieldarena.co.uk or through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56. Tickets booked in person at the Arena box office are priced £57.75, £68.25 & £78.75 including booking fee. The forthcoming UK tour follows hot on the heels of Joe’s critically acclaimed Salute To The British Blues Explosion tour that saw the American guitarist paying homage to the music of Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. The April 2017 UK tour will feature Joe alongside a hand-picked group of world-class musicians playing material from his latest album Blues of Desperation plus classic Bonamassa fan favourites. Tickets for Joe Bonamassa’s Sheffield date go on general sale at 9am on Friday 30th September in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk.
BLOSSOMS TO PLAY AT THE LEADMILL Words by John Webster Following on from the release of their self-titled debut album, which spent two weeks at Number one, Blossoms are touring the UK. The lads from Stockport continue to ride a wave of success which has seen them support bands such as The Libertines and The Stone Roses. They will now play 21 venues, taking them from Bournemouth to Glasgow. On October 4th the fivepiece will arrive at the Leadmill in Sheffield in what promises to be a night to remember for the fans, and another triumphant conquest for the band. Frontman, Tom Ogden, has not only got the talent to pen a number-one selling album full of delightful psyche-pop songs, but also has the charisma and presence to captivate entire audiences - just ask anyone who was at the Reading & Leeds festivals. No doubt Ogden will have the Sheffield crowd in the palm of his hand, as Blossoms set out to show that as well as making fantastic music, they can compete with the very best when it comes to delivering an unmissable live performance. Support will come from the extremely talented Declan McKenna and Manchester’s obnoxious postpunk band Cabbage. Blossoms at The Leadmill Tuesday 4th October - Tickets: £14.00 Available from www.theleadmill.co.uk

CYCLE SAFETY CAMPAIGN TO CUT DOWN CRASHES WITH LORRIES An official campaign is being launched to cut the number accidents that occur on the roads between lorry drivers and cyclists. Research published last year revealed that a fifth of crashes in which cyclists were killed involved HGVs. Now, the campaign, from Think!, is encouraging cyclists to give lorries sufficient room when turning so they do not get caught between the vehicle and the curb. It is thought that a large proportion of accidents between lorries and cyclists occur when the vehicles are turning left. As part of the campaign, HGV drivers will also be targeted with support from the Freight Transport Association (FTA), while advice will be issued to car drivers in a bid to make cycling on the road safer. The initiative includes a film – “Things you shouldn’t get caught between” – and a series of posters carrying the message, “Don’t get caught between a lorry and a left turn. Hang back.”
It comes alongside government investment of £40 million to provide cycle training to more than one million children on the key skills they need to stay safe on the road. Christopher Snelling, from the FTA, said that by drawing attention to the blind spot at the front left of a HGV, the campaign would highlight one of the biggest danger zones for cyclists. In addition, he said, design innovations such as transparent cab doors are also playing their part in improving safety for bike riders using the roads. He said: “We need to make our busy urban roads as safe as possible for all users and it’s important that both HGV drivers and cyclists understand the risks created by sharing the limited road space and know what steps they can take to minimise them.” In a poll carried out by YouGov for British Cycling, drivers said they support the idea of having more cycle tracks on main roads. For 71%, this was case even if it meant adding a minute or two to their own journey time, while 54% said they would support the idea even if it meant increasing travel by five minutes. Commenting on the new initiative, Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: “This campaign will raise awareness amongst urban cyclists and help make our roads safer for those on two wheels.”

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
After recently spending a few hours trotting a float along the river Churnet, I thought I’d go back with a lure rod to see if I could connect with one of the perch rumoured to reside within. An hour or so wandering the banks saw me catch exactly nothing, and the only thing I’d had any interest off was dace, which kept nipping the lure. Undaunted, I moved to another nearby lake, and quickly found a ‘nest’ of perch, which I plundered to the tune of forty odd fish! Whilst walking around the lake, I was disgusted to find a bag full of anglers’ rubbish left hanging in a tree; empty cans of beer, cake packaging, food wrappers, a brand new rod sleeve, and milk (still fresh) told me I’d just missed the culprits on the car park which was disappointing! I picked up the rest of the litter laying around, put it into my carryall, and took it back to my van to dispose of later… my arms didn’t fall off, nor did hellfire happen, which just goes to prove you can pick it up and take it home after you’ve finished, you utter (insert expletive here). Take it home! I finished my session by moving onto a stretch of canal, catching several more decent perch, but the monsters continue to evade me. I will find them, and I will catch them! Later in the week, I took delivery of a pair of Sonik Sports S4 rods, one a feeder rod, the other a matching waggler rod, and a new AVX reel. I love fishing the ‘tip, trying to interpret each judder and twitch before hitting a positive bite, so I was really looking forward to trying my new wand out at a local club water. I opted to fish The Method, packing a small feeder with a mix of dampened pellets and groundbait, with a banded pellet on the hook. In fairness, this is a prolific water, and I knew I could expect to catch carp to double figures, and hopefully some decent bream, so I cast out, let the feeder hit the lake bed, and put the rod in the rest to await some interest. It was my first cast, and as I hadn’t put any other bait in, I thought I might have to wait a few minutes, so turned around to wrestle my camera tripod from my bag; big mistake. As I rummaged in my bag, I felt something brush my ankle, and looked around to see my new rod and reel sliding quickly towards the water! I dived to grab the quickly disappearing rod butt, and stood up to play a nice double figure carp to the net; a

relief indeed! A couple of bream followed, but then a brisk wind sprang up, and bites became hard to come by, so I fired out five big balls of groundbait, wound in my rod, and went to talk George fishing the river behind me. George is 89 years old, and had moved from the lake after also struggling for bites, so had set up to ease a float through one of the gentle KINGFISHER glides. Whilst we chatted, George demonstrated Carp (up to 32lbs) Roach considerable finesse whilst controlling his float, Bream Skimmers Perch the mark of years of practice, and explained to me how much the river had changed over the ISLAND MATCH POND years. It was a very pleasant few minutes that Carp Roach Bream Perch Hybrids I spent with George, and I was as pleased as BLUEBELL he was when he swung a string of gorgeously Roach Bream Perch Hybrid marked, palm sized, brown trout to hand. Fish Stockies Carp don’t have to be monsters to provide joy to an angler who is just out to relax and enjoy the Day Ticket £6 • Extra Rod £2 surroundings; something worth remembering… Night Fishing 7pm - 7am I returned to my swim, reloaded the feeder, Advanced Booking Only and fired it back to the baited spot. No sooner Match Bookings Taken had I put a slight bend in the tip, it whipped around with another carp on the hook. The fish OPEN MATCHES had obviously moved onto the bait, and the Every Wednesday - Draw 5pm - Fish 6-9pm next hour was busy with both carp and bream, Every Saturday - Draw 9am - Fish 10am-4pm before a minibus, with a trailer full of canoes, arrived at the side of the lake. The subsequent Find us on Facebook • Open 7 Days 7am - 7pm chaos which involved a trio of two man canoes, several kayaks, a Frisbee, a load of youngsters and a single member of staff, ruined both my Ward Lane • Chesterfield S43 4JD swim, and the carefully baited areas of most other anglers who were on the lake. After politely asking the canoeists three times to avoid my swim, I became so exasperated on the fourth occasion, that I called the member of staff over Static Waterside Caravan For Hire and ‘explained’ that his charges were ruining Touring & Camping the fishing, and ‘advised’ them to stay clear of Day Fishing anglers. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to share the waterway, but when two thirds of the lake Specimen Lake with are devoid of anglers, and the remaining third Carp up to 30lb is where they choose to play boisterous, noisy Disabled Access games, then all I ask is some consideration… Toilets, food and shops failing that the throwing stick might come out… Under New Management grr. Fishing now ruined, I packed up to return to Friskney • Skegness • PE 22 8QS the van. I can’t reasonably review the new rod 01754820691 and reel kit as it’s the first time I’ve used it, www.greenhavenholidays.co.uk but suffice to say I use Sonik rods exclusively, and there is a reason for that (and yes, I do pay for them!) so I fully expect the S4 to perform admirably; I’ll just have to go out and try them by Michael Clarke again won’t I, just so I can keep you informed! Tight lines!

STUBBS CALL FOR MILLERS TO SHOW CHARACTER LIONESSES Rotherham United boss Alan Stubbs has called for his players to start ‘putting their bodies on the line’ on a more consistent basis as they look to change their fortunes in the Sky Bet Championship. The Millers manager is confident that the attitude is right in the dressing room but says it is now up to his players to prove that on the pitch ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to Huddersfield Town. “They have to show people that there is character here,” Stubbs told www.themillers. co.uk. “First of all they need to show themselves and then myself, the fans and everybody that there is character there. I know it’s there but they have to start showing it on a much more consistent basis. “Sometimes it’s about how much you’re prepared to throw your body on the line to stop the opposition getting a header, or getting in front of you at a set piece and staying 100% concentrated until the ball has been cleared and if we’re being honest, there hasn’t been enough of that.” Stubbs continued to add that the ruthless nature of the second tier will not wait for the Millers to lick their wounds and insists results will turn

in their favour if they show their resolve. “Feeling sorry for yourself doesn’t do anything,” he added. “We have to stick our chests out and be more resilient and if you do that then you’ve got a better chance of getting results. There will be nobody feeling sorry for themselves here.” The Millers boss also took time to reflect on Saturday’s defeat to Cardiff City and admitted he felt that his side were unfortunate not to take anything from the game. “I think sometimes when the game has finished you reflect on it and I can’t remember Campy making a save in the game,” Stubbs explained. “That’s what makes it all the more frustrating. You see their staff come in at the end of the game and there’s a look and something in the way they’re talking that they can’t believe they’ve taken three points from the game.”

ROWE TO RAISE ROVERS Tommy Rowe has suggested that there is more to come from both himself and his teammates as the season approaches double figures. The influential midfielder said that he expects his standards to be “20, 30% better” than they already are ahead of facing unbeaten Carlisle United at home on Tuesday evening. “There’s always improvement, we always look for that. The size of the club forces you to think that way,” he said. “We know where we want to be, the club want to be, the fans want us to be and I think it would be unfair if we didn’t share the same ambitions. “It’s exciting really because we’ve had injuries
and players who haven’t been able to play because the team has done well and it’s been hard to change. “Personally I can get 20, 30% better and that’s me, I can’t speak for others but as a team we can get much better.” Rowe stressed that he was enjoying life on the left of a ‘diamond’ midfield which affords players opportunities to express themselves and, in the case of captain James Coppinger, score goals. “I’m enjoying it. The way we play, it’s enjoyable for anyone in that diamond three or four to move around,” he said. “It’s a license to get ion the ball and rotate as
much as you want and get forward. Equally we’ve shown that we can defend and, arguably, Saturday (a 3-1 defeat to Luton) was our worst day of defending for a while so we need to get back to those ways. “James has wonderful technique and uses it well so it’s good to see the way it’s worked and, from last year, we’ve got players in different positions who’ve taken to it well so I think the gaffer and management are happy. “My standards that I want to set are higher, keep going and progressing and improving. You set your own individual goals. I keep pushing game by game but its early doors – only nine games – we’ve still got plenty of time to go on a run of games and wins as well.”
Darren Ferguson bemoaned the lack of ruthlessness shown by his troops in a 3-1 defeat to Luton at the weekend. Rovers squandered a goal lead and should have been out of sight early on, according to the manager. “Sometimes as a manger you’ve got to be honest and say you’ve been beaten by a better team but the game should have been over after 30 minutes,” he lamented. “It’s three defeats on the road and I keep saying the same thing; we’re not ruthless enough. “We haven’t got that yet, but we’ll need to get it. we haven’t got it at the moment but I’ve just said to the players that they need to see the game out, they’re gone if we got a second but you have to give them (Luton) credit even if the goals we lost were really poor.” The Scot exuded calmness despite the defeat though, issuing a reminder that the season is still very much in its infancy. “We are on a good run, we’re three points off the top.
We’re only nine games in, it’s still early days. I think we’re a good team, a match for anyone in this league when we get it right. “We play Tuesday and what I’ve been pleased with is, when we have suffered defeat, we’ve won the next one and we’ll have to do that on Tuesday as we’ve got three big games.
“If we had come here and got played off the park then I might have thought we’re not in the position I thought but nothing has changed my mind. “It’s hard to get consistency all the time and be at it every week. We have got injuries to key, experienced players and I thought we showed a little bit of naivety.”

There are some excellent nations who will be at the tournament and the more experience we can have playing them the better prepared we’ll be. “We’re pleased that France have agreed to come over and play us. We haven’t beaten them for a long time so we’re looking to change that. “They are the third best team in the world so it is a great test for us and if we’re going to do well at the Euros we’ll have to beat teams like France on the way. “Although it’s a friendly we’ll be approaching this game in a very competitive way as part of our tournament preparations.” He added: “We’re looking forward to playing at Doncaster. The club has such a big women’s football history and the Keepmoat is a great stadium so it will hopefully make for a great game.” Gavin Baldwin, chief executive of Club Doncaster, said: “We are delighted to welcome Mark Sampson and the England Women’s team to the Keepmoat Stadium as they take on France in what should be a fantastic game. “Our area has a long association with the women’s game, with the Belles side one of the most iconic names since their formation in 1969. I am delighted that we can build on that by hosting this game and hope we get a good crowd to support the Lionesses.” The Euro 2017 finals draw will take place in Rotterdam on Tuesday 8th November. SHARP’S LATE PENALTY WINS BLADES A POINT A late penalty from skipper Billy Sharp got ten-man United a deserved point at leaders Scunthorpe on Saturday. Chris Basham had an eventful afternoon, scoring the opening goal before receiving a straight red for a tackle on Neal Bishop in a second-half, which saw Josh Morris and Duane Holmes give Scunthorpe the advantage at Glanford Park, only for Sharp to salvage a draw from the spot after David Mirfin fouled substitute Stefan Scougall. For the trip to Lincolnshire, boss Wilder was forced into one change to his starting XI, with Fleck replacing the injured Wright. That meant a more defensive role for Basham, whilst new signing Brown took his place amongst the substitutes with Wilson also missing out through injury. Inside the opening five
minutes, there were a couple of minor scares for the Blades, as O’Connell and then Ebanks-Landell were forced to clear over their own crossbars at the expenses of corners, from the second, Wallace headed wide. In response, O’Connell headed over from a good position from Fleck’s flag-kick. Ebanks-Landell became the first Blade to booked in the 13th minute having caught Bishop late. It was very much nip and tuck with neither side able to dominant possession and goalscoring opportunities were very much at premium, Fleck’s long-range effort on the half hour went harmlessly wide. It was the Iron who wasted the best chance of the game in the 32nd minute as van Veen blasted high and wide having latched onto Clarke’s long ball forward. At the other
end, Clarke then saw yellow for a foul on Sharp and from the resulting free-kick in the 34th minute, the Blades took the lead. Duffy played the ball short to O’Connell, he angled a first time pass to BASHAM who calmly slotted past the advancing Daniels from close-range. As half-time approached, Done had a disagreement with referee Deadman and saw yellow, prior to the dangerous Holmes cutting inside from the right and firing into the side netting. The yellow card was out again before the interval, the time it was brandished at van Veen for a challenge on O’Connell. The last meaningful action of three minutes added time saw Freeman drag an effort wide. The hosts were quickly out of the traps at the beginning of the second period, with Moore alert to the danger to deny Smallwood from
the edge of the penalty area. United’s first shot in anger came from Lafferty from Done’s lay-off but it was well wide. The home side had begun brightly and got their reward in the 55th minute, some neat play involving Toffolo and Smallwood started the move, before van Veen played in MORRIS who advanced purposefully before beating Moore at his near post. The game had really opened following the equaliser, the home supporters were in good voice, whilst for the Blades, Duffy fired over from a promising position. In the 67th minute, the game potentially swung in Scunthorpe’s favour as referee Deadman instantly produced a red card for Basham following a whole hearted tackle on Bishop. The sending off had notched the atmosphere up and Morris again
found space in the box to shoot, but this time Moore was more than equally to his powerfully struck effort. The first change of the afternoon saw Scougall replace Duffy. Scunthorpe responded with a double change themselves, as Madden and Hopper entered the fray. With eight minutes remaining, Scunthorpe made their numerical advantage count, as HOLMES scored from distance, shooting across Moore on the angle having advanced past the challenge of Coutts. But that lead lasted only a matter of minutes, as United were gifted the chance to equalise from the penalty spot. Mirfin needlessly caught Scougall with a high boot for which he was carded for and skipper SHARP confidently hammered the ball down the middle of the goal to restore parity. It was Scunthorpe turn to attack next and only a
swarm of visiting bodies snuffed out the danger as Madden tried to turn home a free-kick from the right, as five minutes of added time were signalled. As the minutes ticked down, Lavery replaced Sharp and United deservedly got a share of the spoils. Scunthorpe: Daniels, Wallace, Mirfin, Dawson (Madden 81), van Veen (Hopper 81), Morris, Bishop, Toffolo, Smallwood, Holmes, Clarke. Unused: Anyon, Wiseman, Adelakun, Mantom, Goode. Blades: Moore, Fleck, O’Connell, Basham, Sharp (Lavery 90), Done, Coutts, Freeman, Ebanks-Landell, Duffy (Scougall 76), Lafferty. Unused: Ramsdale, Hussey, Brown, Whiteman, Chapman.
WILDER’S SCUNTHORPE VERDICT Blades boss Chris Wilder was pleased with the commitment and application of his players in Saturday’s entertaining 2-2 draw against Scunthorpe United. On an incident packed afternoon at Glanford Park, a Billy Sharp penalty rescued a point for the visitors, who played the final 23 minutes with ten men following Chris Basham’s red card. Speaking after seeing Josh Morris and Duane Holmes cancel
out Basham’s well taken opener from a rehearsed set-piece, Wilder praised his side, despite admitting they were below par against the Iron. The Gaffer remarked: “We’ve not played well but we leave with a point and although the players are disappointed with the performance we’re very happy to keep the unbeaten run going. “We’ve dug in and shown character again. We’ve stood up and been counted having conceded
an equaliser, been reduced to ten men and then falling behind. “We could have gone under and lost the game, but we haven’t and that’s a big positive in the circumstances. “We defended well for long periods, but I wanted us to be better on the ball. It was scrappy, it was disjointed and it was a tough game but importantly we haven’t lost. “The fans reaction at the end shows what they think about the
team and it was a case of having to grind one out and we did.” Commenting briefly on the game’s main talking point, Wilder added: “In my opinion I honestly believe that this was a case of two lads going into a challenge fully committed to win the ball. “I’m gutted for Bash because he has been terrific and we don’t think he deserved to be sent off meaning we lose a big player for the next three matches.”
BROWN JOINS BLADES WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
Chris Wilder has extended his defensive options after Reece Brown joined the Blades on a short-term deal. The 24-year-old has signed a deal until January and will hope to extend it beyond that point. The former-Manchester United youngster was a free agent after being released by Bury in the summer. After completing the deal, Wilder said: “He comes in and gives us cover at right back or right wing-back. He adds weight to
our squad and knows the division well. He has done everything we have asked of him, trained well and impressed. His pedigree is good and this is an opportunity to earn a longer deal.” The defender has been on trial with the Blades for the last few weeks and after the departure of John Brayford, it is clear Wilder wanted to reinforce the right side of the defence, especially with the loss through suspension of Chris Basham, following
his harsh sendingoff at Scunthorpe last Saturday. The length of the deal has surprised some Blades fans, but the deal offered to Brown is evidence into how the club is changing its transfer policy.
They made ultimately costly mistakes in handing generous deals to players such as Dean Hammond and Martyn Woolford. By bucking that costly trend and handing out shorter deals the club will hope to
benefit financially. Another player vying for a contract with the Blades is Cameron Stewart. The 25-yearold has been on trial with the Blades for the past week, the player featured for the under-23 side in the
hope he could impress Wilder and his team. The winger, like Brown, is a formerManchester United trainee and most recently had a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers last season.

THE PERFECT WAY Kieran Lee says scoring two goals was the perfect way to mark his 150th appearance for Sheffield Wednesday. Nottingham Forest went ahead in the first half through Henri Lansbury but a double from Lee after the break sealed Wednesday’s third home
win on the bounce. Delighted with his contribution, he told swfc.co.uk: “It’s more of a team thing really, I’m just luckily finding myself in the positions at the minute to put them away. “It shows the spirit of the team to come back
like we have been when we have been losing the game. “It’s not ideal to go behind but we have gone on to win which is the main thing.” The 28-year-old joined Wednesday in May 2012 and 150 appearances later, the in-form
2016/17
midfielder says he is enjoying every second at the club. He added: “I’ve enjoyed every single game I’ve played here and I appreciate all the support from the fans. “To cap it off today with two goals and to get the win is perfect.”

FROM ONE LEGEND TO ANOTHER Owls legend Don Megson has paid tribute to former team mate Jackie Sewell, who sadly passed away this week aged 89. Megson, who served Wednesday for no less than 17 years, spoke fondly whilst reminiscing on the former strike star. Sewell bagged 92 goals
in just 175 appearances for the Owls, whilst posting each of his six England caps during his four-year S6 stay. Megson said: “It is really sad news. Jackie was a great player. There’s no doubt about that. He scored some great goals. “I saw him a while ago at Hillsborough and I
had a photograph taken with him and Howard Wilkinson. The club presented him with a painting and he looked really well for his age. “Jackie was a good little sniper and he had the knack of scoring goals. “Jackie wasn’t a physical, hustle and bustle striker but he was top-drawer at
what he did.” Megson added: “I was only part time when Jackie was at Wednesday but he was a jovial lad and good with the younger guys.” The thoughts of everyone at Sheffield Wednesday remain with the family and friends of Jackie at this difficult time.
THE PERSONALITY OF THE TEAM Following another dramatic turnaround at Hillsborough, Carlos Carvalhal has underlined the character and personality of his assembled Owls squad. Wednesday reversed a 1-0 half time deficit
into a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, in keeping with a similar pedigree this season. Indeed, the Owls have salvaged ten points from a losing position so far, prompting Carvalhal to say:
“This is a very important part of the game and for me right now, it shows the personality of this team. “We have big, strong characters and they do not know when they are beaten. They fight right to the very last kick of
every game. “When we have been losing at certain parts of games, we should have been winning every time. “The players know this and stay positive, the environment is very, very good and we are getting the points we deserve.”
