SHEFFIELD MUM MARKS TREATMENT MILESTONE WITH ALPINE TREK AFTER BREAST CANCER FIGHT A mum from Sheffield marked the end of her cancer treatment this July after being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2014. After a turbulent year, fitness enthusiast, Claire Cologne (36) from Netheredge decided to take on a mammoth trek over the Alps in a bid to raise money for Weston Park Cancer Charity whilst achieving a personal goal. Weston Park Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for Weston Park Hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer across the region. In October 2014, Claire received the devastating diagnosis that she had an aggressive and rare form of breast cancer. She went on to receive chemotherapy treatment followed by 2 surgeries and radiotherapy at Weston Park Hospital. But although feeling unwell at times, and being admitted as an inpatient on 2 occasions over Christmas and Easter, Claire was adamant that she would get back to leading an active lifestyle - even if it meant running to and from her treatment sessions. “The last two years have been incredibly difficult, “said Claire, “Not only have I had to stay strong for my 2 kids and husband, but also cope with the change in lifestyle due to the side effects of my treatment.” “I’ve always been an active person and as soon as I started to regain some energy and strength back after treatment I knew I needed
something to focus my mind on during recovery. It started with me running to and from my Radiotherapy appointments, which seemed crazy at the time, but gradually I became stronger and learnt how to exercise and manage my fatigue at the same time.” “As a keen walker, The Haute Route Glacier trek is a challenge which I have always wanted to complete and it seemed a perfect fit at the time, as I planned to do it a year on from my final Radiotherapy session at Weston Park Hospital.” “I wanted something to really test my limits and prove that cancer wasn’t going to get in the way of me living my life to the full.” Through a Challenge Cancer Through Adventure initiative Claire signed up to complete the 7 day Haute Route Glacier Trek which is a high level trail through the French and Swiss Alps, from Chamonix in the West to Zermatt in the East. Each day, Claire ascended steep snow, ice and rock to reach high cols and summits, including the Pigne d’Arolla, at 3,796m. She stayed in basic mountain huts and despite some very early starts of between 4am and 2:30am each day, managed to complete each day without being too tired. Claire continued, “Climbing the Pigne d’Arolla was very poignant for me as it fell exactly a year from the day of my final radiotherapy session and removal of my chemotherapy tube. I couldn’t quite believe that in just a year I’d gone from struggling to climb stairs with a very weak immune system to scaling one of the highest peaks in the Alps!” “It was a once in a lifetime challenge that showed me, and anyone else fighting cancer, that it is definitely possible to get back to leading a proactive and fulfilling lifestyle after treatment- even though at the time it feels almost impossible!” Claire, who now attends regular follow up appointments at Weston Park Hospital, has raised over £1,000 for the cancer charity and has plans to undertake further fundraising events in the future.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK with 1 in 8 women and 1 in 870 men expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. The incidence of breast cancer in our network of 1.8 million is around 1500 cases per year. The cancer charity is proud to invest in research projects which hope to improve the treatment of breast cancers, not just locally, but worldwide. In total, the charity has contributed to more than 150 clinical trials in breast cancer including many thousands of patients. Currently, the charity is investing into a number of projects in conjunction with The University of Sheffield including investigating certain proteins which aids the growth of breast cancer cells and identifying more efficiently the metastasis of breast cancer into the bone. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Throughout 2016 the charity will fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer. This year, the cancer charity is encouraging people from across the region to join its dedicated ‘Walk & Raise’ team by taking on a walk whilst raising sponsorship to support the work of Weston Park Hospital. The charity needs to raise over £2 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep patients at the forefront of cancer treatment. To find out more about taking on a walk or trek for Weston Park Cancer Charity visit: www.walkandraise.org.uk

Just bought a new U2 sat nav! I’ve had to take it back though. The streets have no name & I still haven’t found what I’m looking for! Employed a gardener today, gave him a list of things to do. When I got home he’d only done tasks 1,3, & 5. Turns out he’s an odd job man. My bank just called me about suspicious activity on my account. They didn’t believe I bought a gym membership. Just back from the zoo. Saw a slice of toast lying in one of the enclosures. It was bread in captivity. I’ve got a job interview to become a Yodel delivery driver. To show that I’ll fit in, I’m going to turn up anytime I like between 7am & 7pm. It’s my wifes birthday today, so I’m taking her out tonight to that place where you can drink as much as you like for £3. The swimming baths. Just accidentally put my donor card into the cash machine. It cost me an arm and a leg. Apparently I snore so loudly that... I scare everyone in the car I’m driving. A man is at court today for damaging books by putting tippex on all the full stops. He’s expecting a long sentence! My girlfriend hates it when I sneak up on her. Also the police say I should stop referring to her as my girlfriend. My girlfriend has just dumped me as she says I am obsessed with chess. So far I have managed to keep my emotions in check.

Direct from the USA, the world’s most successful Elvis tribute artist of all time returns to the UK by popular demand. Featuring original Elvis band members ‘The Sweet Inspirations’ who toured with the King as his backing vocalists from 1969 until his untimely death in 1977. The Elvis World Tour starring Shawn Klush will stop off at Sheffield Arena on Saturday 5th November 2016 Tickets are now on general sale priced £49.50 VIP with meet & greet & £30.25 standard including booking fee when booked online at www. sheffieldarena.co.uk or through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56. Tickets booked in person at the Arena box office are priced £47.25 VIP with meet & greet & £28.88 standard including booking fee. The incredible Shawn Klush first exploded onto the UK scene when 6 million viewers tuned in to see him crowned ‘The World’s Greatest Elvis’ live on BBC One. Soon after, Shawn was also crowned the first ever ‘Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Champion’ in Memphis, Tennessee. On the back of his success, Shawn embarked on an unprecedented world tour, performing to thousands of fans in theatres and arenas across the USA, South America, Europe and Australia. Original Sweet Inspirations band member Estelle Brown, 71, speaks about Elvis and working with Shawn: “Working with Elvis was indescribable. It was absolutely fantastic and he was the perfect gentleman. He was just a humble guy, a really wonderful person. We used to say ‘hey boss, hey boss’ but he’d say ‘I’m not your boss, I’m your brother’. That’s how he was; we became a family. Just as people loved Elvis, Elvis loved people. He was a real people person. That was his life.” “Shawn is the closest that anyone will ever get to
him. I’m not saying he’s exactly Elvis, but he’s as close as anyone will ever get. We have a wonderful time working together.” “Shawn’s a good singer, a good person and has a great attitude. He puts on a great show.”

in a similar position to him, to achieve their career goals. Daniel’s professional career started in 2005 when he secured employment at the college as a Level 2 Business Administration Apprentice and he has never looked back. In February 2010, Daniel started in his role as a Learning Support Technologist and his selfmotivated learning journey of understanding and practising teaching and learning technology began. Going above and beyond his job role, Daniel demonstrated a longing for teaching and sharing his knowledge with the next generation of Learning Technologists. This passion impressed his manager and they committed resources and support to enable him to complete a range of training courses, most recently graduating from the University of Huddersfield with a MSc in Technology Enhanced Learning, so he has a deeper and richer understanding of how teaching can be delivered and utilised through digital technology. Daniel said: “I am extremely proud and overwhelmed at winning this prestigious award. 1182 NEWS & INFORMATION
HAVE YOUR SAY - TREES & WOODLANDS The Iron-Man stands in Sheffield’s Bowden Houstead Woods, a lasting reminder of the important role the city’s trees and woodlands played in Sheffield’s industrial revolution. And today, as consultation launches on Sheffield’s draft trees and woodlands strategy, they are just as important. Members of the public are invited to have their say and help shape the future for the city’s trees and woodlands. We are one of the greenest cities in Europe and are responsible for over two million of Sheffield’s trees – that’s four for every person - in around 2,000 open spaces across the city. Sheffield City Council’s Countryside and Environment service has been working on the draft strategy. The new draft document sets out the vision, aims and actions to manage the city’s trees and woodlands for the next 15 years. Cllr Mary Lea said “We know how important our green spaces are to our residents and people are using them in so many different ways now. They are an adventure playground for families, a collision of nature and technology for the Pokemon hunters, the place where dogs fetch sticks, where our runners find their pace and our strollers find some space. We need to make sure they are managed in the right way for everyone. We will plant two trees for every one removed, we will plant more trees in the areas that have fewer woodlands, with access to better data we will plan and manage our trees much more effectively and we will continue to find ways of managing our woodlands sustainably. Better still we have aspirations, to plant a tree for every baby born in the city each year, that’s around 7000, and watch them grow together, and be explored and enjoyed for many generations to come.” Our woodlands have been important to people throughout the ages – indeed, the steel industry was founded on the charcoal produced in the city’s woodlands and the Iron-Man stands in Bowden Houstead Woods as a lasting reminder of this. All Sheffield City Council woodlands are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, which means that they meet an international standard of sustainable woodland management. Two woodlands – Ecclesall and Wheata – have also gained Green Flag status.

The strategy addresses a wide range of tree-related topics including tree and woodland management; bio-diversity; tree planting; the character of Sheffield’s woodlands; archaeology; the outdoor economy; tourism; employment; health and wellbeing; community engagement; education; countryside recreation; interpretation and much, much more. Cllr Lea added: “The role of trees in our beautiful landscape is undoubtedly vital and in order to maintain that we must plan ahead. In Sheffield we are lucky to have access to 180 woodlands all across the city, not just in one or two areas, so it’s important we hear from as many people as possible. I would encourage everyone to get involved because this affects us all. Please have your say and help us set out how we manage our trees and woodlands for the future.” The consultation is for a period of two months, until Thursday 1 December 2016. People can read the draft strategy document plus other supporting documents, and complete the survey at https://sheffield.citizenspace.com/placeplanning-1/trees-and-woodlands-strategyconsultation. The draft strategy document is also available at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ parksandcountryside . All feedback will be analysed and considered to help inform the final strategy document, which will be released for implementation in 2017. If people need an alternative way to provide feedback or have any questions they can contact parksandcountryside@sheffield. gov.uk or call 0114 2500500.

05/10/2016 WE’RE STILL OPEN!
The Stroke Association’s well known charity shop is continuing to trade from Charles Street, Sheffield, even though re-development work is now underway in the city centre. Manager Tracey and her team are continuing to appeal for donations of any good quality furniture, electrical items, bric-a-brac and books, etc and offering free collection for suitable items. And Mercury readers are advised that all of their carefully selected items are still on sale and the shop is accessible to visitors! The staff are also available to answer any questions on 0114 273 1400, and of course their Rotherham branch is unaffected.
A HUNDRED OF US?
There were 14,570 people aged 100 or over living in the UK last year says a report from the Office of National Statistics. And the number of people who live to over 90 has more than doubled in the last 30 years. We have seen this trend in our membership at Sheffield 50+ too. One of our members, Kathleen Mysberg who lives near Norfolk Park, is going to be 100 in February. She still attends our monthly meetings and reads our bulletins and newsletters on email. And we have many other members who are aged over 90 and still take an active interest in current affairs and the life of our city. The report doesn’t say how many people there are in Sheffield aged over 100 but by proportioning it out we can say there are likely to be over 100 centenarians in Sheffield. Well done and good health to all of you.

ARIZONA COVER AND SUCCEED AT REAL TIME LIVE ARIZONA REAL TIME LIVE, CHESTERFIELD 1st October 2016
think is old school gentility, but for me who normally likes a smattering of present tunes, everything locked into place as guitars and vocals rocked the night away. The crowd even participated in decent sing alongs, which for a Words & Pic by Roy Goodall local band to instigate and succeed with is quite something. And yes, the punters too were in Playing to packed houses when you’re a fine voice. named band must be the norm, but when Arizona may be doing what many local bands you’re a covers outfit of about nine years standing filling large venues like Real Time are currently playing and yes, the ending could have been better as they closed with the Kiss Live must be amazing. hit God Gave Rock ‘n’ Roll which just doesn’t And believe it or not, these boys really know do it for me, but the real difference was overall what they’re doing as a large black drape covered the stage as they opened with the Guns we had a red hot atmosphere with the band’s ‘n’ Roses classic Welcome To The Jungle. With performance hitting boiling point. front man Mark rasping out the first few lines And that my friends is what it’s all about. the drape still held strong until the ‘boom’ bit hit, then it dropped. In my view, a great way to start, with Whitesnake’s Here I Go Again following straight after, thus keeping the masses happy. Eighties rock is the band’s forte and throughout the evening they knocked out some great gems of musically history. NUMBER OF DRUNK DRIVERS IN ACCIDENTS REACHES 10-YEAR HIGH Official figures reveal there has been a rise in motorists failing a drink-drive breath test for the first time in 10 years. According to the data from the Department for Transport (DfT), the number of drunk drivers involved in an accident in 2015 was around 3,450. This is an increase on the 3,227 motorists who failed the breath test after a crash in 2014. Previous records from the DfT show the total had
fallen every year from a high of 6,397 in 2005. The RAC said that a drop-off in awareness-raising campaigns for drink-driving could be behind the rise. Nick Lyes, public affairs manager for the motoring organisation, said: “Concern about drivers who are over the limit has also fallen in recent years, which may suggest the message over the seriousness of the consequences of drink-driving has started to become lost. “Successive campaigns over a number of years have been effective in making drink-driving more socially unacceptable, but clearly a focus needs to remain on this so that accident rates as a result of driving under the influence do not now start rising on a more regular basis.” The DfT figures also chime with research published in the 2016 RAC Report on Motoring. This showed that there had been a softening of attitudes among motorists surrounding drink-driving. In the research, 6% of motorists admitted to driving over the limit over the last year, up from 3% in 2012. Meanwhile, the number of people who are sure they have not driven over the limit has dropped from 89% in 2012 to 80% in 2016. The RAC added that the breath test figures would “add to the argument” that the drink-drive limit in
England and Wales should be brought into line with Scotland. The Scottish Government reduced the alcohol limit for drivers from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml of blood in December 2014. But the legal level in England and Wales remains at the 80mg level. The DfT data also showed there has been no significant reduction in traffic accident fatalities since 2011. A total of 1,730 people were killed on Britain’s roads in 2015. Although this represents a decrease of 45 fatalities from the previous year, the DfT said this change was probably due to “natural variation”. A DfT spokesman said officials are working with safety groups on “common sense proposals” that balance tougher penalties for dangerous driving with help for road users to stay safe.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
DO NOT let your wife read this… you have been warned. How much does your fishing cost you? I’ve been pondering today whilst fishing, and wondered if, actually, my wife might have a point… much as I hate to admit it. I like to think I’m pretty much an ‘Average Joe’ when I go out, admittedly, I go twice a week, but it’s only for short day sessions, but I’ve been doing a bit of mental arithmetic and it doesn’t make good reading. (Unless you are single, own your own house and car, good sense of humour, that sort of thing) Let’s consider a reasonable set up. You have to get started, so you buy new. Yes, you can do it on a budget, but you get what you pay for, so those initial savings may not be what they seem, therefore a job lot of second had tackle is probably a good idea… let’s say £750 for everything? I would wager, that if you think about it, you probably have around £1000 worth of gear on the bank. Whether that be a set of carp rods, reels, bedchair, bivvy and fancy stainless rod pod, or a decent pole and seatbox, even lure kit can be pricey if you really get into it. If you go the whole ‘tarty’, then I’d expect double that sitting in the rain… Don’t forget your camera for a catch shot of your personal best, and you add a few hundred quid to the total. Got a smartphone you say? Pay as you go £250? Contract £300? Told you, it all adds up… Tickets; how much do you pay to actually fish? I know some anglers who do 24 hours here, 48 hours there, and it all has to be paid for, and let’s say you go once a week. Even a day ticket can set you back a fair amount, I know of fisheries charging £20 for a day visit, £30 and more for a 24 hour stay. I’m aware of the debate around ticket prices, and I’ll concede that I am actually paying to take advantage of the owners’ good nature, to trespass upon his land, and fish for his valuable stock, but that isn’t the point of my writing this week, it’s about cost. I set myself an annual limit of £200 for club tickets, and I’ll fish the occasional day ticket, so let’s say £250 just to be on the bank. Oh, I have to get there too, so a couple of sessions a week, say £10 on diesel, so £20 a week… that’s over £1000 on fuel per year! Total so far, around £2500… Bait. I’m not a heavy bait user, and I know that this year, I’ve used perhaps around twenty five kilos of boilies, which would cost on average
£10 per kilo at shop prices (not back garden shed prices) so we can add another £250 to the tally. I’ve used a couple of pots of hook baits, I’ll be generous and say three, so we’ll call it £20 just to keep the numbers good. I’ve gone through three sacks of particle (£13.50 per bag) and two of hemp (£37.50 per bag) to add another £115, then there are the pints of maggots (thirty?) at £3 per pint, let’s call it another £100, oh, and there are pellets too, at £2.50 a bag, so I’ll round that up to £50. Don’t forget the weekly shop with the wife; if, like me, you add a couple of bags of frozen corn, a tin or two of meat, maybe some chick peas and such, that should add another wedge, so let’s be generous and call it £100 for the year shall we? £635 sound about right? That’s on top of the £2500 so far… So, you have everything you need, tackle, bait, transport, and ticket, so what else? Terminal tackle of course! Again, I’m far too tight to use a new hook every time I land a fish, and I certainly can’t afford to drop leads every cast like ‘proper’ carpers, so I’d guess around £100 should cover it. After all that equates to ten packets of hooks, twenty leads, a couple of spools of hook link material… tell you what, we’d better make it £500? Disagree? When was the last time you went to a tackle shop and bought one packet of hooks? Or a couple of leads? Exactly, you are just like me, go in with best intentions, come out for an argument with the wife… (or hide the receipts) So a conservative estimate reads at over £3500 for the first year of regular fishing, £2500 if you already own a good set up... That sounds terrible; it’s a second hand car, a couple of good holidays for you and the lovely wife (who, if she reads this, has probably left you anyway) or a brand new Cockerpoo. Yes, I know you can do it for less, (or a lot more if you wanted) but you could drive to work in a Mini Metro, but I’d bet you would rather do it in a Skoda Jaguar? Moral of this week’s column? Don’t think about the money, just go and enjoy it; if you thought about what it’s costing you, you’d never stop worrying… then you would have to go fishing to relax, and then you would start worrying about the cost again…see what I mean? Get out there, enjoy it… (just don’t tell my wife I’ve added it up, and I won’t tell yours!)

STUBBS CAN’T FAULT PLAYERS AFTER DEFEAT DONCASTER Rotherham United manager Alan Stubbs says that his side will have no problems picking up points in the Sky Bet Championship if they continue to turn in performances of a similar ilk to those against Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town. The Millers turned in a battling display at AESSEAL New York Stadium against one of the second tier’s favourites for promotion but suffered defeat as Christian Atsu’s wonderstrike helped the Magpies to a 1-0 win. Despite being disappointed to have tasted defeat, Stubbs believes if his side can recreate their form of the last week, they will begin to climb the Championship table. “If they keep putting performances in the way they have done this week, I’ve got no doubt they will pick up points sooner rather than later,” he explained. “They’re disappointed but I can’t fault anything today. Their effort and their attitude and desire was excellent, but you have to give the opposition that you’re up against a bit of credit. “The last two games are certainly what we’re trying to get to, but not where we want to be. We’ve just played two of the top teams in the
division and given them a real run for their money.” The hosts dominated the opening 45 minutes and hit the post either side of the break through Jon Taylor and Dominic Ball and the Millers boss says Atsu’s moment of brilliance was the only difference between the sides on Saturday afternoon at AESSEAL New York Stadium. “We’ve certainly given Newcastle a real game,” Stubbs enthused. “I think when you look at it overall, I the majority of the game was played between the 18 yard boxes and I don’t think either keeper was troubled an awful lot. “I think that tells you how tight it was and it’s one bit of quality that has won them the game. “One moment of maybe not being a yard or two closer has given them an opportunity to put the ball into the back of the net. “I can’t repeat what I’m thinking when the ball hits the post. You can feel sorry for yourself if you want to and that everything is against us or

THE WILL TO WIN Hitman Andy says Rovers need to understand they’re a good side after Pompey triumph. Andy Williams was thrilled to score his sixth goal of the season which resulted in Rovers taking all three points in a top six battle with Portsmouth last weekend. The strikers’ effort came after forward partner John Marquis had already set the visitors on their way to a 2-1 victory. Williams said: “I think we were good. I said prior to the game that we’ve had spells recently where we’ve good but not got the result that we deserved and we possibly threatened to do that again, not taking all the chances we should have done, but thankfully we held on and got a much deserved win for me. “Thankfully we got a couple of goals, rather than just the one which put pressure on the opposition. “It was frustrating to go in conceding one just before half time but I thought we came out in the second half and were a lot more resolute than we have been in recent weeks - we rode our luck a little bit but at the other end we were a little disappointed not to finish the game off.” Rovers now have three out of their next four league fixtures on home soil and, being second in the league table, Williams reckons he and his teammates can kick on. “I think it gives us a good springboard,” he said. “We’re second in the league now and you’d take that at this stage of the season. “I think that there might be a few in the group who don’t realise how good we can be. “I’m not one of them, I know how good we should be, and that we should be right up there and I think we’re showing that now and Portsmouth have seen that and a few other sides have been impressed by us lately.”

you can keep going and make your own luck. If you keep doing the right things more often than not, things will fall for you.” After defeats against the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City in recent weeks, the Millers boss believes he has seen enough to suggest that his side have turned a corner of late. “On too many occasions we’ve beaten ourselves and over the last couple of games it’s been no coincidence that we’ve stayed in games better and that’s what’s given us a better chance of picking up points,” Stubbs explained. “We played the top on Tuesday and before kick off today, the team that was in third and our next game is against the team that started today in second. If you’re being fair, we could have taken two points from both games. “We certainly would have wanted another game because our performances have taken a step in the right direction.”
CULTURE AND LEISURE TRUST SIGN UP FOR JUNIOR CUP
For the second season running Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA (S&HCFA) is thrilled to announce that following a successful partnership last season, Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) have agreed to support the County FA’s Saturday Junior Cup. James Keyworth, Health and Fitness Manager based at the Doncaster Dome said: “Giving something back to the South Yorkshire community is important to the Trust and this is a great opportunity for the Trust to provide support to the County FA in a very positive way whilst developing and increasing the number of individuals and groups using our facilities. “Last season the Saturday Junior Cup provided DCLT with a great opportunity to promote the activities that are available at all our venues. “People, young and old, in the South Yorkshire area are passionate about their football and many of the people that visit our different venues and indeed an number of our work force will have friends, family and people they know competing in the Saturday Junior Cup.” Richard Finney, Marketing, Communications and Charity Officer at the County FA said: “We are delighted that once again we are going to be able to continue to work in partnership with DCLT and develop the relationship that began two seasons ago.” Darren Ferguson was more concerned with AFC Emley hosted the Junior Challenge Cup sending a message to his players, rather than final with Stocksbridge Park Steels Under the rest of Sky Bet League Two, following a 2-1 21s playing against Euroglaze. WILDER’S FLEETWOOD VERDICT Chris Wilder felt a point was the least the Blades deserved for their efforts in Saturday’s stalemate against Fleetwood Town. Ethan Ebanks-Landell headed home an equaliser deep into stoppage-time at the Highbury Stadium to cancel out David Ball’s first-half opener, as United made it seven games unbeaten in EFL League One. And the Blades boss said it would have been a ‘travesty’ if United had been beaten on the Lancashire coast. Wilder commented: “I thought we dominated
the game. Fleetwood have got some good players at the top end of the pitch and were a threat on the counter attack. “But we should score inside the first minute and if we do the game totally changes. We moved the ball excellently at times and got in some fantastic positions, but a combination of poor decision making and good goalkeeping denied us. “It would have been easy to think it wasn’t going to be our day, but full credit to the players they weren’t prepared to accept defeat and in the
end we got our reward.” The Gaffer added: “We kept going and it would have been a travesty if we had left empty handed. We were dominant throughout, but having conceded early we had to chase the game. “The hardest thing is always the final pass or finish and it didn’t look like coming, we kept going though and I’m delighted for the players and supporters to keep the run going. “Everybody showed tremendous courage and that’s immensely pleasing.”

United’s U18s got a deserved point from Saturday’s six goal thriller against Barnsley at the Oakwell Academy. A last-gasp penalty from Keegan Burton rescued the Blades, who named a particularly young side against the Tykes, a share of the spoils, with Oliver Greaves also netting a brace. Lead Coach Derek Geary was pleased with the result, especially given the youthfulness of his squad. He remarked: “With the U23s in action a lot of the regulars featured for them, meaning some U16s, college lads and some of the players who haven’t played as much this season got an opportunity. “In the end we got a point which was the least we deserved. With a bit more luck
and composure, in addition to cutting out the individual errors we could have won the game.” United started brightly and took the lead in the 5th minute. GREAVES applied the finishing after he followed in Brown’s cross from the left. And moments later a header from Hawkes went just over. Barnsley responded promptly and levelled in the 17th minute, following pinball in the penalty area from a corner the ball was forced home from closerange. Ten minutes before the break the home side went in front, despite the best efforts of Perryman, who did well to save the initial shot before being powerless to save the rebound. The Blades were quickly out of the blocks after
the interval with Greaves and Burton both going close either side of the hour, although at the other end, Perryman was required to keep the game at 2-1. With 13 minutes remaining the Blades made their pressure count, from a good pass from Burton, GREAVES checked back onto his right foot before shooting into the top corner. In the 89th minute though, the game looked to have cruelly gone against United as Barnsley scored with a low shot. But United had the final say to get a draw as BURTON netted from the penalty spot in the final minute of added time after he had been upended when advancing towards goal.

Kieron Freeman and Paul Coutts are set to be taken off the transfer lift at Bramall Lane and both could be offered new deals. When Chris Wilder joined the Blades, both players were considered surplus to requirements and placed on a lengthy transfer list. However, the pair’s performances when called upon has seemingly caused Wilder to change his mind. Speaking after the Fleetwood game,
Wilder said: “I think it’s fair to say that the position regarding Kieron and Paul has changed.” Freeman has had the chance to impress following the lack of form and subsequent temporary exit of John Brayford, the right-back hasn’t provided many fireworks but a series of confident displays seems to have secured his Blade future. Coutts is a player that many would have been happy to see leave following a disappointing
season under Nigel Adkins. However, after returning from the summer break the central midfielder has played a key role in United’s buildup play, providing accurate service to the more creative players such as
Stefan Scougall and Mark Duffy. A clear testament to the improvement Coutts has made is that he is currently keeping a fit-again John Fleck out of the starting eleven. On the possibility of new contracts for
the pair, Wilder said: “We won’t be trying to do anything right this minute but, if
they carry on as they are, then we’ll be speaking to them after Christmas.”

SKIPPER GLAD TO BE BACK Steadily building up his fitness and match sharpness, Glenn Loovens is happy to be back in regular action for the Owls. The skipper featured three times last week in the wins over Nottingham Forest and Blackburn and the defeat to Brighton on Saturday. The international break will see that run put
to a temporary halt and Loovens says the Owls will use that time to prepare for the trip to league leaders Huddersfield. He said: “The break has come at a bad time for me because when you come back, you want to play as many games as you can. “But maybe it is a good time for some of the
other players who have played a lot of games to get some rest and recharge the batteries for the next one. “When you’re coming back, you need a little run to come into yourself but physically I’m feeling ok.” The Owls now head into the break with four wins from six games and three points outside the top six
after 11 games. Loovens added: “It was a tough game but with the chances we had, we have to score. “We have to learn from this and be ready for the next game. “We started the second half well and put pressure on them but the second goal came at a bad time.”
LANDMARK OCCASION FOR YOUNG OWL Cameron Dawson made his first team bow on Saturday against Brighton as the 21-year-old goalkeeper replaced the injured Keiren Westwood at half time. And Dawson did not allow the 2-1 defeat to completely blemish a long-held ambition of playing between the sticks for his boyhood club. He told swfc.co.uk: “It was nice to make my debut for this club. I have been working towards it for many years. “This is my boyhood club and I have grown
up in the area. At the end of the day, this is the club I want to play for. So it is a confidence boost to finally get the opportunity to play at Hillsborough. “Obviously we are all disappointed with the result, we threw everything at Brighton during the second half and probably deserved something out of the game.” The academy graduate penned his professional contract in 2013 and subsequently enjoyed quality loan spells at Plymouth Argyle and Alferton Town. In August this year, a
week-long emergency loan to Wycombe saw Dawson make two appearances for the Chairboys. Since his return to S6, the shot-stopper has impressed with assuring performances for the Under-23s, rising to the first team bench deputising for Westwood. Dawson said: “It was definitely helpful going into the game knowing that you have already played in the Football League. “Although it’s different, it’s not something completely new as I have been out this season and
played at Wycombe. “Every club is going to have competition, especially when you are at a big Championship club like Wednesday. “So it is just about working hard on a daily basis, putting in the effort in the week and see what comes in the future.”
