I’ve loved writing it.” He continues, “Most people know a little about why I do what I do - many think I’m completely barmy but there are things in this book which I’ve never really talked about publicly before which people often ask me about. This is my way of telling everyone where it all began, the challenges I’ve faced and why I love the people of Shefﬁeld so very much.” From his early days in Shefﬁeld to his antics as a teenager, his fundraising races and walks across the country, to the celebrities (and royals!) he’s rubbed

shoulders with along the way, it really is quite a story. Wearing his green wig, giant foam hand and pushing his colourful pram complete with mascot Biggles - John has become a familiar sight on the streets of the Steel City. Even at 77 years old, he spends almost every day walking around Shefﬁeld collecting money for the cause closest to his heart, Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s an amazing level of dedication - and one inspired by a terrible personal tragedy. Having raised thousands of pounds for various causes over the years, on his retirement at the turn of the Millennium

John decided to focus on one charity in particular, Macmillan. Since then, he has collected more than £350,000 for the charity - but the determined pensioner says he won’t stop until he’s reached £1 million. ‘Distance No Object:

Mark House, National President of Round Table, is urging young guys to get involved, “Men aged 16-30 are the most in demand as stem cell donors but they make up just 15% of the Anthony Nolan register. Round Table clubs were instrumental in getting Anthony Nolan to where it is today and as a young man’s organisation I hope we can encourage more young men to join the donor register”. Ann O’Leary, Head of Register Development at Anthony Nolan, said: ‘We’re delighted to restart our lifesaving partnership with the Round Table. We urgently need more people, especially young men, to join the register. Most people have a 1 in 900 chance of being chosen to donate. But young men have a 1 in 200 chance. What many people don’t realise is how simple it is

to join the stem cell register – it involves filling in a form and providing a saliva sample. For those who go on to donate, about 90% will donate through PBSC (peripheral blood stem cell collection). This is a straightforward process, carried out as an outpatient procedure, where you can potentially save the life of a person in desperate need of a transplant. “Our original collaboration with Round Table added a huge number of potential donors to the register. This time around we want to reach young men in particular and we look forward to seeing how the campaign takes off in the Sheffield Riverdale area. PARK HILL DEVELOPMENT ‘SET TO BE COMPLETE IN FIVE YEARS’ Award-winning urban regeneration company Urban Splash has secured a revised agreement for the final phases of Park Hill with Sheffield City Council which means they will be able to complete the project in five years. Simon Gawthorpe, MD of Urban Splash: “This is great news for us and for Sheffield – it means we can complete the project we started in 2007. We can now, alongside development partners, Places for People and Great Places, fulfill our ambitions for the project. “Phase One is complete with 260 homes and 10 contemporary workspaces that are occupied with creative and digital businesses. “There are currently 600 people living and working at Park Hill reflecting a mixed community that includes affordable housing, rented, owner occupiers – from young professionals to downsizers, as well as the businesses, Grace Owen Nursery and oS1 Artspace that have provided a rolling arts programme. “The public realm has been improved with landscaping and seating areas that has been enjoyed by all this summer. “Our aim is to create a new quarter for the city of Sheffield where people want to live, work, play and visit. We are proud to have realised some of that potential with the completion of the first phase, and its great to see a new mixed multi-generational community putting down roots there again. It is also good to see how well the new residents and workers are enjoying being part of a wider community group, alongside those who have lived in the area for years. “We always intended to provide mixed tenure and, as well as private sale, we have been able to provide 96 affordable housing apartments and 28 Help to Buy in Phase 1 significantly more than the 68 originally agreed. We plan to provide the ranges of affordable housing options beyond Phase 2. “The current plans provide a sustainable future for Park Hill adding students and arts and culture to the community to create a place of national significance for the city.” The revised development agreement will be split into four phases – Phases 2 to 5. Phase 2 will see Urban Splash create 210 residential properties and Phase 3 following on with the development of 330 student housing units working with an external partner. The whole scheme will deliver a total of 130,000 square foot of commercial space. Phase 4 and 5 include provision for the S1 Artspace Project, as well as open market and social housing. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure, said: “These plans provide the momentum to move forward with the scheme, securing the completion of the Park Hill development It is great news for the city that its ongoing regeneration will include such

a significant development and Urban Splash have brought forward a viable and workable plan to complete the final phases.” Matthew Harrison, Great Places Housing Group Chief Executive Officer said: “Great Places has been involved with the regeneration project since the beginning so it’s great to know that agreement is now in place to secure the future of the remaining blocks. POLICE ARE APPEALING FOR ANYONE WHO HAS INFORMATION ON A SERIES OF CAR ARSONS IN SHEFFIELD At around 11.30pm on Friday evening last week (7 October), police received a number of calls about a series of cars being set on fire in the Parson Cross and Southey areas of Sheffield. Following the reports received, eleven cars in total have been recorded by police as being set on fire on Friday evening. It is thought the arsons were started by accelerant being sprayed into the rear of vehicles. This is a serious offence that is extremely dangerous, and Police are working to identify the individuals that have committing these crimes. Superintendent Robert Chapman, commander for the area, has said: “This is a disgraceful series of criminal damage on vehicles belonging to hard working people. “Someone, somewhere knows who is responsible for these crimes, and I am appealing for anyone with information about these attacks to come forward.” Enquires are still ongoing and anyone who has information relating to these arsons is urged to contact police on 101 quoting incident 1327 of 7 October, or to alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE PREMIUM RIP-OFF That’s the main message from this year’s annual Public Health Report for Sheffield which documents the health of the city. The report states there are around 900 preventable deaths in Sheffield each year, caused mainly by high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, smoking, alcohol and lack of physical activity. Life expectancy continues to rise in the city but health inequalities and how long people live in good health for are continuing issues. Greg Fell, Sheffield’s Director of Public Health, said: “Life expectancy in Sheffield has been increasing and is 78 for men and 82 for women. But people will typically spend around 20 years of their lives in poor health, and there are big differences across the city. People living in affluent areas such as Dore and Totley tend not to develop long-term health problems until their early 70s, whereas people living in more deprived areas often experience them 20 years earlier in their 50s. “This is a big issue for the city and we need to address it.” This is the first annual report by Greg Fell, who became Sheffield’s Director for Public Health in March. It states that more needs to be done to help those living in poorest health and tackle the conditions that affect this. This goes further than just health and social care services, and includes areas like education, early years care, housing, employment and the environment. Greg Fell added: “There’s no silver bullet to tackle the inequalities that continue to blight the city and this will always be a problem as long as people don’t have enough money for things like heating and

eating. “Things become much more difficult with the continuing cuts and austerity. But we’re an ambitious city and services are working more closely than ever to make things happen.” Sheffield City Council is helping people who cannot afford to heat their own homes, earlier this year won an additional £400,000 to support this by providing grants and adapting homes. It is also helping people into employment who are currently unemployed due to long-term health reasons, and is carrying out a pilot project with the DWP. The authority is encouraging people to move more in the city to improve health. Earlier this month it helped to open a new £16million Graves Sports and Health Centre, and opened a new £7million leisure centre in High Green in July. A “Reyt Healthy Sheff” social media campaign has been set up to provide people with information and signposting about health and wellbeing in Sheffield. Elderly drivers and homeowners are being ripped off by insurance providers catering speciﬁcally to over 50s, consumer campaigners have warned, as they are paying up to four times as much for cover offered by regular providers. A mystery shop by Which? found some year-long policies offered by specialist providers were between £110 and £1,134 more expensive than the best deal given by a normal insurer. Last night experts said it was “unacceptable” for trusted brands including Age UK and Saga to overcharge old and vulnerable customers just because were less likely to question the value of deals. James Daley, director at Fairer Finance, said: “These ﬁrms should be more careful about claiming they offer good value to over 50s and then in practice offering some of them very bad value.” Sources told investigators that some insurance policies offered by Saga, which offers insurance policies provided by a range of different insurers, are sold for 80pc more than the actual cost of the insurance. The Which? report found it charged £437 for an annual home insurance policy, around 35pc more than the best deal offered by Direct Line £286. Saga insisted it does not charge commission and sets prices which covers its costs including marketing and customer care.

25 YEARS OF STEAM AT THE KIRKLEES LIGHT RAILWAY! 2016 has been a milestone year for the Kirklees Light Railway as it celebrates 25 years of steam. The railway, which is located in Clayton West, near Huddersﬁeld will be celebrating the milestone over the weekend of the 15th & 16th October and hosting an event to showcase the last 25 years. The Kirklees Light Railway opened to the public on the 19th October 1991 under the ownership of the Taylor’s. After negotiations, and with support from Kirklees Council, a Light Railway Order was granted in September 1991, one of the last to be made under the 1896 Light Railway Act. During this time the Taylor’s had been busy, with assistance of a small team of paid and

voluntary staff, constructing the railway. This opened in stages, firstly to Cuckoo’s Nest in October 1991, Skelmanthorpe in December 1992 and finally Shelley in May 1997. Much has changed since the completion of the 3 ½ mile line which terminates at Shelley Station. New ownership brought substantial investment to the Railway introducing new facilities at Clayton West and Shelley Station, making it one of Huddersfield’s premier visitor attractions. The Kirklees Light Railway now runs every weekend throughout the year, during school holidays and hosts several special events including; Days Out with Thomas, Halloween Ghost trains, Steam Galas and Santa Specials.

Welcoming 60,000 visitors per annum the Railway is operated by a small number of full-time paid staff and the support of the Friends of the KLR volunteers. To celebrate this milestone all of our available home ﬂeet will be out on the line pulling trains from 10:00 every 30 minutes until 16:00 both days. There will be plenty of other activities going on at the Railway to keep visitors entertained with bouncy castles, the ever popular ‘Clayton Flyer’ miniature railway, a historic photographic display showing the railway and its developments over the past 25 years and much more. All children’s fares will be reduced to the original 1991 prices of £1.00, when the ﬁrst train set out along the narrow gauge line. The KLR’s General Manager, Stuart Ross says ‘I have been involved with the Railway for over 15 years. In that time it has been a pleasure to see it develop initially under Brian & Doreen Taylor and more recently Stately-Albion. We have visitors of all ages and it’s great to see people who visited as children in the early days returning with their children. M&S SHEFFIELD RAISES £7200 FOR MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT’S WORLD’S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING M&S’ store in Sheffield has raised a staggering £7200 after a successful month-long fundraising campaign for Macmillan’s flagship World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Shoppers were out in force to support the cause, joining millions of people across the UK who also participated in coffee mornings for Macmillan. As well as serving huge amounts of coffee and cake, employees at M&S also spent the month of September fundraising by competing in an in-store bike ride challenge, holding a staff bake sale, embarking on a sponsored hike and hosting a staff party. The Sheffield store was part of a nationwide fundraising drive by M&S in what is the retailer’s seventh year of supporting Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. M&S has raised over £6million for Macmillan during this time, helping to fund more specialist

Macmillan services in local communities across the UK. Lucy King, Store Manager at M&S Sheffield, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our shoppers for helping us to raise such a phenomenal amount for such a worthy cause. We very much appreciate everyone’s efforts and especially staff throughout the store who have been working hard behind the scenes over the last few weeks to help make this year’s coffee morning extra special.” Fundraising efforts for the coffee morning have been underway at M&S since the start of September. Throughout this time, 10 percent of each sale from a variety of products, including a delicious Victoria Sandwich and 13 flavours of cakes and cookie mixes, have gone to Macmillan Cancer Support. TOP UK ARTISTS UNITE TO CELEBRATE GOOD FRIEND & ENTERTAINER’S LIFE On Friday 18th November at The Dome in Doncaster a selection of the UK's top acts are appearing on The Best Of British Show to raise money for the alzheimers.org.uk charity. Initially the show was to assist our great friend Dick Van Winkle in his hour of need during his stay at his care home Amethyst House, Rossington, Doncaster. Unfortunately as the entertainment industry knows by now, we lost our friend and fellow artist Richard on Thursday 8th September and he will be sadly missed by all his family and friends the world over. The Best of British Show will now be a celebration for this ultra talented International Entertainer. Any of his friends, fellow artists, agents and members of the general public who would like to attend the show and give Dick a huge send off, please contact the box office at The Dome for tickets. Unfortunately Ricky K will not be appearing on the show but Martin Daniels has told us it would be an honour to appear on the show and will be with us on the night! BEER SURVEY SHOWS SHEFFIELD IS STILL UK CITY OF BEER xxx

The annual beer survey held by the Sheffield branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has shown yet again that the city has the highest number of cask beers available anywhere in the country. On one Saturday early in September around 20 members of Sheffield CAMRA visited over 200 pubs within the city to record all the cask beers that were on offer. An incredible 450 different beers were available on over 1200 handpumps, ranging from £1.50 to £5.90 per pint, with the average price per pint being £3.04. Bradfield Farmers Blonde was found to be the most common beer, closely followed by Abbeydale Moonshine.

The two local brewers were also the most commonly found within our pubs, with Abbeydale just edging it for top spot. As a testament to the loyalty shown by Sheffield drinkers, 6 of the top 10 commonest breweries are local, and 4 of the top 10 beers. Following on from Sheffield university’s Beer Report which suggested the city as the UK’s capital of Real Ale, Sheffield has shown once more to be a real beer drinkers paradise. Sheffield CAMRA plans to capitalise on this reputation with a comprehensive city-wide Ale Trail leaflet and website in the new year.

Sheffield Theatres is celebrating unprecedented success in this year’s UK Theatre Awards with a record win of 6 awards including Best Musical Production. BLOSSOMS ROCK THE LEADMILL Live Review by John Webster

Blossoms continued their tour of the UK with a gig at the Leadmill in Sheffield last week. It’s been a rollercoaster year for the band, playing around 150 shows, including 45 festivals, across 22 countries. They showed little sign of fatigue though, in what was an incredible night of topclass musical entertainment. The Leadmill is a perfect venue for delivering an intimate gig and the five Blossoms: Tom, Charlie, Josh, Joe and Myles were seen among the spectators while support acts, Cabbage and Declan McKenna got the place warmed up. After delaying their entrance just enough to get the crowds anticipation to boiling point, they walked on stage to a roof-raising welcome. Charismatic frontman Tom Ogden, all in black, addressed the audience with his now customary: “We’re Blossoms and we’re from Stockport” and ripped straight into ‘At Most a Kiss’. ‘Cut Me and I’ll Bleed’ was then followed by fan favourite ‘Blow’ which brought the first sing-along of the evening. The atmospheric ‘Smashed Pianos’ worked remarkably well, with Joe Donovan working the drums in a mist of smoke. The melodic ‘Getaway’ galvanised the ecstatic fans, as the band served up gems from their number one album. As a live act, the five-piece are simply sublime. Every song was executed to perfection. The extremely talented lead-guitarist Josh Dewhurst played with a steely confidence, as ‘Honey Sweet’ and ‘Blown Rose’ brought the gig to a midway interval.

The knock-out punch was saved for last and, as the unmistakable ﬁrst chords of ‘Charlemagne’ sounded out, the place erupted. As the triumphant musicians departed the stage, Ogden led the crowd into one last chorus of ‘Blow’ and the night became part of Leadmill history. Bass player Charlie Salt said recently: “The band has gone from a scaffolding yard to the top of the charts.” And, with performances like this, the sky really is the limit for Blossoms.

A difficult column to write this week, mainly because in reality, I haven’t caught anything of particular note, which is disappointing. I’ve had the usual couple of trips out, once to the glorious River Dove, where I sought grayling, but caught only small ones, and a few out of season trout, and then my first pike trip of the new season, which was frustratingly fruitless… so that’s it for this week I’m afraid! Obviously not, as I’m obliged to write a column each week, and this is perhaps where I start to earn my money. Writing a weekly column can be tricky, especially as the seasons change, but even more so when I haven’t really had much success to share, and so on the menu this week, a few thoughts about my most recent acquisition, the Sonik Sports S4 feeder rod. There are four rods in the S4 feeder rod selection, which range from nine to twelve feet, and, as I wanted a rod which would cope with fairly long casts, I opted for the twelve foot version. So far, I’ve used it on a club water to tame double figure carp at medium ranges out to about forty yards, on the river at similar distances for downstream legering, and then on a 166 acre windswept reservoir at around seventy yards for pound perch, and found it to perform admirably on each occasion. Each two piece rod comes supplied with a selection of three push in carbon quivertips, rated appropriately from just 0.5oz to 3oz depending on which rod you choose, and is presented, as expected, in a cloth rod bag. I’m not one for flashy graphics or unneccesary ‘pizazz’ on my rods, I just want it to do the job for which it is intended, and the S4 is a tool which does just that. There is a flash of maroon above the cork handle, but nothing too excessive, and a subtle Sonik logo, but apart from that, the rod has a matt black blank. One thing I did particularly like was the texture of the blank, a change from the usual completely smooth carbon, the S4 has a raised weave effect which makes it much easier to grip the rod, especially when breaking it down when wet; a small point, but valid, and it doesn’t impact on line flow through the rod rings, nor does it cause wet line to stick to the blank to reduce casting distance. It’s just there, and you don’t even notice it until you come to pack away the rod with cold, wet hands. I could go into all the technical aspects of the construction, such as the fact that the S4 rods use a mixture of three types of carbon fibre, hence the term ‘Multi-modulus’, but I won’t, but rest assured, the S4 utilises some of the very best materials developed for the aerospace industry. Ultimately, the aim is to optimise performance and durability, which in the case of the S4 rods,

gives the angler a rod capable of fishing at extreme range, whilst retaining the all important sensitivity in the tip to avoid hook pulls at close range. It creates a very pleasing experience indeed, as it absorbs every lunge without risk of breaking lighter hook lengths. The rod also features lightweight aluminium oxide guide, a DPS reel seat and EVA lock down hood, and top quality cork handle with an EVA rear grip to make handling the rod easy and enjoyable. I’ve twinned my S4 with a Sonik AVX 3000 series reel, and I find it to be well balanced, (although I could quite happily use a 4000 series spool too) and comfortable to fish with. It’s now my mainstay ‘tip rod, and if you are looking for a new tool to tame decent carp, long range bream, or a multitude of other species, then I’ve found the rod you’re looking for. LORD COE OFFICIALLY OPENS SHEFFIELD’S NEW LEISURE DEVELOPMENT

Sheffield’s new, top class sports and leisure venue played host to a top-class sporting legend last week, as Lord Coe officially opened Graves Health & Sports Centre during his London 2012 legacy tour of the city. The centre opened its doors to the public on 1 September, following a £16million redevelopment, incorporating a major fitness suite and studios, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, two brand new swimming pools, a dedicated gymnastics and trampolining hall plus being home to specialist health and research facilities as part of the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM). One of Sheffield’s most famous sporting sons, Lord Coe visited the centre as part of a day-long stay in the city to see first-hand how Sheffield is playing a key role in delivering a sport, health and wellbeing legacy. In his speech at the unveiling ceremony Lord Coe said: “If sport was that important in the city when I arrived, it has even greater importance now. The city has embraced sport as a much broader concept. Sheffield is an extraordinary story, not just as a template for other cities in this country but cities around the world.” Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “We were thrilled to welcome Lord Coe to open our fantastic new facilities here at Graves yesterday. He is a true example of how people can achieve their dreams through hard work and determination. It was a smaller than usual fixture list in the County Senior League on the weekend, as a number of the leagues’ teams were in County FA Cup action. Premier Division League leaders Swallownest FC answered any concerns after their first defeat of the season last week. They were 6-1 winners against Denaby Main at Swallownest Miners Welfare on Saturday. However, defending champions Frecheville are keeping the heat on their rivals, after a brace from Daniel Bainbridge helped them to a 3-2 away win over North Gawber Colliery. Swallownest lead second placed Frecheville by three points after eight games played. Houghton Main claimed the bragging rights in the derby against Wombwell Main at Rockingham Community Centre. An own goal gave Houghton Main a 1-0 win and carried them up to third in the table. After starting the season with six games without a win, Millmoor Juniors made it three consecutive wins with a 3-1 home win over Denaby United. He is now is now a regular at the new development, which helps him retain his mobility, improves his health and wellbeing and contributes to his happy outlook. Mr Marsh said: “The centre is a valuable asset to Sheffield and the local community. If laughter is the best medicine then exercise is the second best medicine and I certainly get a lot of both here at Graves.” The centre is also home to first class tennis facilities with eight indoor and six outdoor courts plus the option of professional coaching sessions. Graves has also been named as a Centre of Excellence for trampolining, one of only three in the country. The dedicated gymnastics and trampoline hall has been designed and funded by British Gymnastics investing £200,000 to support the construction, fit out and equipment of the hall. I felt at the start of the game they showed us a lot of respect, which I think has come from the run we are on at home. We were completely dominant from the ﬁrst minute and I didn’t think they would allow us to do that. “It was probably not our best performance, but a good solid and professional one. A win’s a win. “Three great goals have won us the game. We lost a little bit of composure in the second-half because we knew that if we didn’t keep the ball that would happen with their long throw. “But credit to our players. It is probably, because the way the game transpired, the best win of the season. To win it in the last minute – everyone goes home happy and is talking about it in the pub afterwards. It became scrappy in the second

half, but a win is a win”. Ferguson also had words of praise for forward Liam Mandeville, who came into the starting XI in place of the suspended John Marquis and had a key role in Rovers’ second goal. The Rovers boss added: “He’s a good player, he caused them problems with his mobility and pace and set up Matty Blair’s goal. I thought he did very well. “He deserves it, he has had an impact in every game he has come on and played on Tuesday when he scored a good goal. He gave me the energy I needed to replace John Marquis – I like him as a player and think he is going to have a good season.”

EFL ANNOUNCES NEW INCENTIVE FOR HOMEGROWN PLAYERS The EFLlast week announced a new £2.25m financial incentive for its 72 clubs which aims to assist in revitalising the fortunes of the England national team. EFL Futures will help clubs to develop more young players within the EFL and provide direct financial rewards to clubs who regularly promote home grown players from their academies into the first team. A sum of £750,000 per season is being made available for the next three years to reward those Clubs who provide starting opportunities in Sky Bet League fixtures for home grown players under the age of 21 and

are qualiﬁed for England (or Wales for Cardiff and Newport). The announcement is part of the EFL’s multifaceted strategy that was created following the release of former FA Chairman Greg Dyke’s England commission report in May 2014, which focused on the need to produce more and better home grown the players. The EFL already plays a big part in player development, with 14 of the Euro 2016 England squad at last summer’s tournament in France having once been registered at EFL academies. However, this latest initiative is evidence of the ongoing work that is taking

place to increase the opportunities available for young, up and coming players. The introduction of the format changes and the introduction of Category 1 teams in the newly named Checkatrade Trophy kick started the EFL’s work in this area earlier this season and following on from today’s ﬁnancial injection will be a focus on increasing the number of club grown developed players. Shaun Harvey, CEO of EFL said: “The EFL has, quite rightly, been deeply engaged in playing our part in resolving some of the key issues that were identiﬁed in the England commission report. Our challenge was ensuring
