NEW £45,000 SKATE PARK OPENS IN HIGH GREEN Words & Pics by Meggan Turner

A new £45,000 skate park has opened up in High Green’s Angram Bank Park. The park has taken three years to complete, but was opened at an official event on Saturday October 15th. Families throughout the community attended the event, and the park had a brilliant atmosphere that showed the impact the skate park is already having on the area.

Dave Ogle, 50, one of the people behind the project, said that the main focus of the park was to “reduce crime in the area, and to give the kids something positive to spend their energy on”. The money to create the park was taken out of Section 106A, which is funded by private developers and councillors. However it was originally intended to be used to create a toddler park in the same area, rather than a skate park. “We already had a toddler park that was built seven years ago, and it got vandalised”, said John Ogle, 47, another developer in the project. Dave asked the children of the area which they would prefer, a skate park or a toddler park, and 80% of kids were in favour of a skate park. “Paces Campus near Thorncliffe has been funded for what they need, so we needed to try our best to get that money up here too”, said John Ogle. The children who wanted a skate park were also asked what they wanted to be included and helped to design the park. “It was great that they let us design it, it really makes it more for the community”, said Megan Moxon, 17, a regular user of the park. “It’s a nice social spot too, it gives us somewhere to meet up as a group”. Head of the Angram Bank TARA (Tenants and Residents Association), Terry Bawden, 49, also brought up that the age range of users of the park

was more than they expected, “There are little kids at two years old using the park, and mixing among the older children. We never expected little ones to use it, so the fact they are is brilliant”. Another positive effect is it seems that since the opening of the park 4 weeks ago, “Fewer crimes have been reported in the High Green area, we’ve had positive responses from local police which is great” said both John Booker, and Dave Ogle. “I feel safe here, and all of the older children teach the younger ones how to do tricks too”, said Max Whiteley, 13, “I’ve met people here who I didn’t even know existed before which is great”. “There are around 40 kids here a night and we’ve had little to no trouble at all, which is amazing,” said Councillor John Booker of the West Ecclesfield Ward, who helped raise funds for the project. “We expected it to be vandalised within a few days like the toddler park we already have has been, but it’s been left alone.” The next phase of the development is to continue this success and to listen to the children and add their suggestions to finish the park off completely. “I think that it should have lights to make it safer”, said Katie, 9 who loves using the half pipe. “Lights and CCTV are definitely the next parts”, said David Ogle, “we don’t want the kids to feel intimidated coming here at night, and also we’d like it to make sure it deters vandalism.” The money needed is between £6,000 to £8,000 just to tarmac the rest of the skate park ready for building, but there are high hopes amongst the community that this can be done.“Chapeltown Park has CCTV, it can be done and we can do it too”, said John Ogle. “All I want is for the kids of the estate to be happy, and as you can see it really speaks for itself that this is working” said Terry Bawden. To follow the development of the park, follow them on Facebook at AB Skate Park Highgreen, where updates are posted frequently of donations and new additions to the park.

My dad makes plastic letters for toilet doors… He’s certainly got an I for the ladies. My friend David has lost his ID. We now call him Dav. Wrote a play about weather, we had 5 actors dressed as clouds for the rehearsal. On opening night 6 clouds turned up.. It was overcast! They said my Grandad had the heart of a lion! And a lifetime ban from London Zoo. Don’t kiss your wife with a runny nose! You might think it’s funny, but it’s snot. My Czech mate is surprisingly bad at chess. Looks like my wife is finally going on a diet. I overheard her saying to her sister, “I think it’s time I got rid of that useless lard-ass”. A man walks into a library and asks for a book on different levels of noise. The librarian says, “Sure, what Volume would you like?” Apparently our local Police station has had it’s toilet stolen. Police have nothing to go on. Been sat here waiting for my mates prostate exam for 3 hours now. Somebody wants to pull their bloody finger out!

DUKE OF GLOUCESTER GOES ONE BETTER THAN QUEEN'S TELEGRAM FOR BETTY! A 100-year-old nursing home resident has ensured her centenary year will go down in history! Not only did Betty Richardson receive a telegram from the Queen - she also entertained a personal visit from her cousin, His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester! The royal dropped in at Sheffield’s Broomgrove Care Home where he met staff and residents and enjoyed a performance by the Lost Chord - the South Yorkshire-based charity that specialise in providing interactive music sessions for dementia sufferers. The Duke took special interest in resident Betty Richardson as his

own mother lived to the ripe old age of 102 years-old. He asked Betty if her position as elder of the home carried any sway. “I get my own way quite a lot”, admitted the sprightly 100 year old. Donna Pierpoint, the manager at Broomgrove Care Home, said: “It’s not every day you get a member of the royal family visiting a care home! “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed meeting him and I hope the Duke of Gloucester now has more of an appreciation about the work we do and the quality of life we provide for our residents.”

The Duke of Gloucester also chatted to 95-year-old Broomgrove resident Jean Callin, the former leader of Sheffield Chamber Orchestra, and 67-yearold Rod Knowles - one of the home’s youngest residents. Broomgrove, which is sited just off Ecclesall Road in Sheffield, is the only home of its kind with charitable status in the city and surrounding region. SWITCHING ENERGY SUPPLIERS - YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Changing energy supplier is generally fairly simple. It can produce big savings on energy bills with relatively little effort. Just bear in mind that when you switch to a new supplier you may have to pay an exit fee. Below we list some of the most commo questions which prevent people from switching suppliers: Can I switch if I’m renting? If you’re a tenant and are directly responsible for paying your energy bills, you can choose which supplier you use. However, if you decide to switch, you may be required under your tenancy agreement to tell your landlord – so speak to them about it first. Your landlord or letting agency shouldn’t unreasonably prevent you from switching. They must let you know if they have any tie-ins with specific suppliers and give you details of applicable tariffs and charging details that come with those suppliers. Read your tenancy agreement to check for any clauses about energy suppliers. Find out more about tenants’ rights. If I have a pre-payment meter can I still switch? Yes, you may switch. If you use a prepayment meter, you should be able to switch with a debt of up to £500. Can I switch if I have a smart meter? Your switching rights are not affected if you have a smart meter, but your new supplier may not be able to offer you the same smart meter functionality as your old supplier. I’m in debt with my energy supplier – can I still switch? If you’re in credit you should ask your current supplier to refund that money. Once they’ve paid the money they owe you, you can switch. If you’re in debt with

your supplier, you may be required to pay what you owe before you can switch. What if I change my mind? Check before you switch to find out if there is a cooling-off period available to you. You may not always be able to change your mind once you’ve entered into a new contract. How do I make a complaint if something goes wrong? If something goes wrong, the first thing to do is take this up with your energy supplier. If they can’t resolve the issue, you can write to them stating that you wish to make a complaint. Or you can get in touch with Citizens Advice for help. If your complaint still isn’t resolved, you can contact the Energy Ombudsman. If a supplier raises the cost, can I switch suppliers before a price rise kicks in? If you are on a standard variable tariff you will have no exit fees so you are free to switch at any time. If you are on a fixed tariff you will pay the same amount for the whole of your contract. Your price will not change. You can still switch but you may have to pay an exit fee. What if my tariff isn’t listed on a switching site? You may be on a particular type of tariff that gives you cheaper rates of electricity at certain times of the day or for certain purposes, for example to supply your electric storage heaters. It’s important that you check that this tariff is still the best for your needs. In the first instance you should contact your supplier to discuss what options are available to you, and they should be able to provide information that is clear and easy to understand about the tariff that you are on and what your options could be. You can use this information, and the Tariff Information Label that is on your bill, to contact other suppliers to see if they can offer you a better deal. How do I switch energy suppliers? Contact the new supplier and after you agree on your new energy offer, they’ll start the process, notifying your current supplier of the switch. You’ll need your postcode, the name of the current supplier, the name of the energy offer you’re currently on and how much you spend on gas and electricity (you can find this information on a recent bill), an up-todate meter reading and, finally, your bank details if you will be paying by direct

debit. How do I switch energy supplier when moving? Contact the new supplier and after you agree on your new energy offer, they’ll start the process, notifying your current supplier of the switch. You’ll need your new postcode to hand, as well as the name of the supplier at your previous property, the name of the energy offer you’re currently on and how much you spend on gas and electricity. You can find this information on a recent bill. Finally, an up-to-date meter reading in your new property is necessary, as well as your bank details, if you’re paying by direct debit. Check that there isn’t a prepayment meter in your house when you move somewhere new. If it is, contact your supplier immediately so that you don’t end up paying off any debt left by the former occupants, and to make sure you are paying the right rate. How long does it take to switch energy supplier? Switching energy supplier, although a relatively simple process, can take up to 21 days. What is a cooling off period? This usually refers to a period of time after the consumer has entered into a contract or signed up to a tariff during which they can reverse their decision without incurring any cancellation fees.

FAREWELL BUT NOT FORGOTTEN The big farewell is now underway at Meadowhall as Sheffield says goodbye to The Children’s Hospital Charity herd of elephants. Thousands have booked tickets to see the 58-strong herd of elephants and the first lucky visitors enjoyed the spectacle today (Friday) after the grand opening of The Farewell event. Darren Pearce, Meadowhall Centre Director said: “The elephants have been so well loved across the region over the last few months and this is a fitting finale where thousands more will get to see the Herd all together one last time. “Meadowhall and British Land have been thrilled to host and be part of this special event and we

hope everyone enjoys seeing these elephants as much as we’ve loved having them here.” The project was a joint collaboration between The Children’s Hospital Charity and Wild in Art. Money raised from the weekend will help fund a new multi-purpose Fluoroscopy System for the hospital, a lifesaving piece of equipment which is used to obtain real-time moving X-rays. The Herd of Sheffield Farewell Weekend is located in the Orange Zone Car park at Meadowhall, just outside the Argos entrance until Sunday. Tickets are still available by going to: www. eventbrite.co.uk/e/herd-ofsheffield-farewell-weekendtickets-27575822026

CULT CLASSIC LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS VISITS THE LYCEUM THEATRE

The charming, kooky and hilarious musical cult classic Little Shop of Horrors comes to the Lyceum Theatre from Monday 7 – Saturday 12 November, starring The X Factor finalist Rhydian. Set in the 1950’s, Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of Seymour Krelborn, assistant at Mushnik’s Flower Shop in downtrodden Skid Row, who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers a strange and exotic plant. In order to impress glamorous Audrey, the shop assistant he’s secretly in love with, he names it Audrey Two. But Audrey Two has a mind of its own, and soon grows into a badtempered, foul-mouthed carnivore with an appetite that can’t be satisfied. Seymour must keep the meals coming to stop his prized plant from wilting, but how far is he willing to go to get the girl of his dreams? Rhydian Roberts plays The Dentist, Orin Scrivello. He rose to fame on ITV’s The X Factor and has sold

in excess of a million albums worldwide. His many theatre credits include Grease, We Will Rock You, The War Of The Worlds, Jesus Christ Superstar and the 40th Anniversary Tour of The Rocky Horror Show. Rhydian has just completed his third solo UK tour and is a Classical Brit Award nominee. Little Shop of Horrors comes to the Lyceum Theatre from Monday 7 – Saturday 12 November. CHASING THE SUN

Exhibitions, A Documentary, Unreleased Demos And Remastered Albums - Noel Gallagher Talks About Oasis What It’s Like To Be Here Now... The acclaimed exhibition Chasing The Sun: Oasis 1993–1997 is to visit the iconic Manchester band’s hometown, running from until October 25th at Old Granada Studios over in Manchester. Chasing The Sun takes us on Oasis’s supercharged journey to international megastardom, via three landmark albums – ‘Definitely Maybe’, ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ and ‘Be Here Now’ and many legendary gigs, from London’s 100 Club to Maine Road Stadium, Manchester to their eradefining two-night stand at Knebworth House. Curated by renowned photographer Lawrence Watson, Chasing The Sun 1993-1997 debuted in London in 2014, attracting over 40,000 visitors in 10 days and receiving plaudits from press and fans alike. The exhibition then toured to Tokyo and now, with the Manchester edition, the show comes home to where the story of Oasis began. The Manchester incarnation of the exhibition has been extended making it bigger and better than ever before, with additional rare and iconic content artefacts and photographs. It also features a life-sized recreation of the front room in which the iconic artwork for ‘Definitely Maybe’ was photographed and a display featuring many of the original props. The exhibition will be open daily from 12noon to 7pm, with the exception on Sundays when doors will close at 6pm. Admission free. More information can be found at https://Oasis.lnk.to/ exhibition Oasis have had a busy October with their documentary ‘Supersonic’ released at the beginning of this month plus a remastered version of ‘Be Here Now’ coming out last weekend on top

of the ‘Chasing The Sun’ Exhibition. To walk in the footsteps of Oasis as they made Be Here Now, the fastest-selling album ever, requires a journey back in time. But where to start? Not in London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios, where recording sessions began in late September 1996. Nor on the Caribbean island of Mustique, the exclusive location for Noel Gallagher’s holiday earlier that year, where, at a villa owned by Mick Jagger, he and Oasis producer Owen Morris recorded demo versions of the songs that eventually formed the album – demos that are finally being released as part of a lavish new deluxe version of Be Here Now. In fact, the story really begins four years earlier, before Oasis had made any records at all, at the Boardwalk club on Little Peter Street, Manchester. There, in a tiny rehearsal room one evening in 1992, Noel Gallagher taught his bandmates All Around The World, a song he had already earmarked for their third album, some 18 months before they would make their first. “A lot of people at the time didn’t believe me when I said I’d written the first three albums before Definitely Maybe came out,” says Noel. “But I’d written All Around The World and I’d had the idea for D’You Know What I Mean?, before Rock’n’Roll Star. All Around The World was 11 minutes long then, and I remember playing it in one go and Bonehead had the look of a man who’d seen a ghost. Trying to convince the band who don’t have a manager, a record deal or any fans, that this song is gonna be the centrepiece of our third album – it takes some doing!” When the time came to make that third album, of course, dreams of rock’n’roll stardom had

become real. Hence Noel’s working holiday in the Caribbean. The erstwhile Inspiral Carpets roadie was now rubbing shoulders with rock’s super-elite. As he handed his passport to the immigration officer at Mustique’s small airport, he heard a voice whisper in his ear: “They’ll literally let anybody on this island these days…’” “I turn round and it’s Nick Mason from Pink Floyd. Mick Jagger was playing cricket on the green. It’s so far removed from Burnage! In hindsight, the contrast of finishing off that album there, when you’ve done the other two in the Boardwalk in Manchester, in the rain, is quite telling.” Inbetween the Mustique session and the start of recording Be Here Now at Abbey Road, on August 10-11 Oasis played two epochal shows at Knebworth House, to a combined audience of 250,000. An astounding 2.5 million people applied for tickets. Oasis had become the omnipresent avatar of British youth culture. With an estimated 4 per cent of UK households owning a copy of the band’s second album, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?, the appetite for its follow-up was so intense that anything Oasis did or said was deemed newsworthy. Liam Gallagher walking out on his colleagues at Heathrow Airport on the eve of a US tour, two weeks after Knebworth, was splashed over the next morning’s front pages. When Noel quit the same tour two weeks later, camera crews from BBC, ITV and Sky News were awaiting his arrival. It was amid this overheated atmosphere, compounding the typically fractious climate within the band, that Oasis began the task of making arguably the most eagerly awaited record since the heyday of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. “They were crazy times,” says Noel. “A lot of drinking, and a lot of not thinking straight. Our management’s philosophy is to keep the band working at all costs, because if they stop working it’ll fall apart. So it was exciting but exhausting as well. You’re the biggest band in the world, making this much anticipated new record, it was the birth of celebrity culture and what became known as Britpop had crossed over into the tabloids. I was constantly having a microphone shoved into my face. No way to make a record.” With the press camped outside, inside Abbey Road Studios Oasis were doing what any sane person could have guessed they would be doing if given access to the hallowed space where The Beatles changed the course of music. A building that also happened to have its own bar… “We were just getting pissed all the time,” says Noel. “In the corridors of Abbey Road, it’s very quiet. There’s guys in there making classical albums. You opened the door to our studio and it was like Animal House. Smoke billowing out, screaming… I think they got a little bit pissed off with us.” With the Abbey Road sessions ill-tempered and unproductive, fleeing London’s media goldfish bowl for a residential studio in rural Surrey must have seemed like a good idea. Yet as Oasis decamped to Ridge Farm, the circus followed them. Immediately, feelings of isolation and paranoia began clouding their efforts, particularly when the local constabulary began taking an interest in the new neighbours. “I remember one night,” says Noel, “this police car, with its lights off, just ambling down the lane… That’s the only time I was genuinely thinking, ‘We’re all going to jail.’ Thankfully they didn’t come into the studio. We’d have had a lot of explaining to do, put it that way.” Almost three months into the process, without any sign of a record emerging, Oasis returned to London and made themselves at home in Air, owned by The Beatles’ producer, George Martin. During the early months of 1997, recording sessions proceeded in comparatively stress-free fashion – albeit only compared to the preceding chaos.

By this point, however, as recording ended and mixing began, the album’s sonic characteristics were becoming apparent: the songs, densely packed with multiple guitar overdubs, as typified by Stand By Me and My Big Mouth, were very long and very loud. “We had two tape machines in Air,” says Noel. “You’ve got this huge desk, the size of Bradford, and then you’ve got a tape machine which couldn’t handle the amount of tracks we had, so we had to get *another tape machine. It’s the only time I’ve ever seen that happen.” Producer Owen Morris regards the final mix of the album as “terrible”. Noel agrees. “It is shocking. All the things you shouldn’t do when you’re mixing a record, we were doing tenfold. Really, we shouldn’t have mixed it. We should have given it to somebody with a fresh perspective.” Today Noel Gallagher considers Be Here Now “a missed opportunity”. Earlier this year, his longharboured dissatisfaction with the final versions of the songs that began life so simply at the start of the decade in Manchester, and which came of age so promisingly in Mustique, prompted him to remix D’You Know What I Mean?. Dubbed ‘NG’s 2016 Rethink’, it’s released on the new Be Here Now deluxe edition. “I got the master tapes and honestly I was staggered at the amount of nonsense,” says Noel. “When we separated the hundred guitars, all doing the same thing, and got the key elements and did the remix, it sounds amazing! You can actually hear the strings and the bass guitar, you can actually hear everything. And the original mix is kind of *skrrrgggghhhh! The guy I was with said, ‘Why does it sound like that? I was like, ‘I can only tell you that on the night, it sounded f*****g amazing!’” The remixed D’You Know What I Mean? offers a tantalising glimpse of what might have been, had clearer heads prevailed in 1997. Ultimately, however, Be Here Now isn’t about clarity. It enjoys legendary status among Oasis fans, many of them musicians, precisely because of its unrepentant excess, its supersize swagger, its sheer preposterousness. “I sign thousands of these a week,” says Noel, holding a copy. “I sat up with Marilyn Manson one night and he went on about that record for longer than the record lasts, and that’s 72 minutes. He was saying it’s such a big influence on him. Kasabian, they f******g die for this album. That’s what made them be in a group. So who’s to say?” Who indeed? Released on August 21, 1997, Be Here Now sold 400,000 copies in the UK that day alone. It has left an indelible mark on the history of British rock. Even its principal architect and harshest critic can’t argue with that. “Coyley and Phil, my pals from Manchester, summed this album up best,” says Noel Gallagher. “They’ve always said: ‘It was just meant to be played once, on that day, high as a kite, preferably in the park, pissed – then never listened to again.’” He laughs. “Why didn’t I think of that?!” Chasing The Sun: Oasis 93-97 the exhibition run until October 25th at Old Granada Studios in Manchester. Be Here Now - The Remastered Version is out now.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

Well, what a week! I’ve still got nothing remotely fishy to report unfortunately, but in other ways this week has been a great one! I’m on a run of blank sessions. It happens, but I’m feeling a little frustrated because I think I’m fishing competently, I just can’t get amongst the fish! The last three outings have all been about pike. I love deadbaiting for toothy critters, couldn’t wait for the start of the ‘official’ pike season, and headed off immediately for local venue Rudyard Lake. I sat there for several hours, moved spots twice, and registered exactly nothing on the alarms. Later in the week, I returned, but found a bloom of blue-green algae, and not wishing to impart any undue stress on the fish in water which may have been partially deoxygenated, I switched lakes to Astbury Mere in Cheshire. I blanked again. Finally this week, I visited a water I rarely fish, reputed to be full of smaller pike, but I badly needed a lift, so I travelled to Rode Pool… I have no idea why I fish this particular water so infrequently. It’s a beautiful spot, with some big bream, carp and some superb crucians, but I had never sought the pike before. I picked a swim offering open water, and a sedge lined margin, cast out a legered herring towards the cover, and a floatfished sprat into open water to catch the drift, to cover more territory. A glorious morning, with an autumnal sting in the air after a cold night, with a hint of chilly breeze; perfect! I sat and watched the motionless scarlet float for a couple of hours, recasting when necessary, before opting to change to a popped up bait at the edge of a hollow. The wind had increased, and gusts were taking the float into areas where it was likely to snag, hence the change of plan. I recast both rods, and settled back to watch the water, and browse a few pages of a good book whilst enjoying a cup of tea in the sunshine. Annoyingly, gusts of wind were causing a few indiscriminate bleeps of the alarm, and then a slightly longer bleep as the drop back indicator was blown off the line. I put down my drink, folded the corner of my page, and pinched the line to replace it in the clip, but was prevented from doing so by something pulling the line from my fingers. I watched the line tighten quickly, and lifted the rod to strike into the now obvious fish! Disaster! I’d completely forgotten to retighten the clutch, so as I swept the rod skywards, very little happened aside from the spool spinning furiously! I quickly tightened up, and struck again to connect with a particularly angry pike, which put a splendid curve in my 3lb test curve rod as it took almost thirty yards of line on its first, powerful run across the lake.

It was in clear space, open water, with no chance of a problem, when a couple of dull head shakes confirmed it was indeed a hefty creature, and a huge swirl confirmed this, as it rolled over the trace at the surface. A couple of minutes of steady pressure seemed to be winning the battle, but suddenly, the pike started to move back towards me at frightening speed, so fast I could hardly keep up, before it hit the margin to my left… the very area filled with danger! I tried to keep pressure on the fish, which by now had found the other side of the lilies, but to no avail; a few seconds more and all went slack as the fish threw the trebles… noooo! Crestfallen, (and open mouthed at the sheer power of the fight) I retrieved my mangled bait to find that one of the prongs of the treble had opened up, and the fish slipped off… a combination of bad luck, and poor preparation, which perhaps could have been avoided had I remembered to adjust the tension when first clipped into the indicator. My fault, but I was still somewhat dismayed. One chance and I blew it, and that made three blanks in succession! On a brighter note, this week saw me feature in a three page spread in Angler’s Mail magazine which is always pleasing, and then a phone call brought even brighter news. Some time ago, I was struggling through a ‘fog’ or uncertainty around my primary employment as a firefighter, which was in jeopardy due to the onset of arthritis. Over a three year period, things changed dramatically as it became apparent that I would no longer be able to continue with high impact emergency services operational work, nor were there any office jobs to move sideways into, so my employment was set to be terminated after twenty two years. As a result, on the angling front, I parted company with a couple of clients, and set about streamlining my written work to concentrate on a smaller group which would become more manageable and provide fulltime income. Thankfully, we parted on amicable terms, (a lesson to be learned there) and it was with pleasure I received a call inviting me back onboard a prestigious brand now that my personal life had settled into more of a routine. It certainly brightened a day when I could have cheerfully chucked my rods in, and I’ll tell you exactly who it is when we’ve agreed the details, but there are exciting times ahead!

NO END TO MILLERS AWAY JINX Rotherham United slipped to defeat against another side vying for an immediate return to the Premier League for the second time in as many games as they were defeated 3-1 by Norwich City at Carrow Road. Alan Stubbs’ side had reason to be confident as they arrived in Norfolk after giving Newcastle United a run for their money prior to the international break, but were undone by goals from Wes Hoolahan, Cameron Jerome and Steven Naismith. The first chance of note almost yielded the first goal for the visitors and came after eight minutes had elapsed. Hoolahan set the move in motion with a short pass to Alex Pritchard in the area before charging towards goal where he received it and drilled an effort at the target, only to see a retreating Dominic Ball make a heroic clearance off the line. Stubbs’ side looked to reply with an opportunity of their own just moments later which very nearly saw Jon Taylor run through one-on-one with Michael McGovern in the Canaries’ goal. A wellweighted pass set him on his way into the box but the pressure of a yellow shirt was enough to force him off balance and ensure it remained goalless. Ball would thwart the hosts again soon after and following some more promising play down the left flank, saw a ball centred for Cameron Jerome who may feel he should have hit the net instead of the Millers’ defender with his strike from 10 yards. The hosts’ pressure would eventually tell after 17 minutes and it would be the dangerous Hoolahan to break the deadlock with a piece of individual brilliance. The chance looked to have escaped the long-

serving Canaries’ midfielder as he brought the ball down in the box but after a series of twists and turns which left Ball and Lee Camp stranded he kept his composure to slot the ball into the unguarded net and put his side ahead. A series of Joe Newell deliveries would follow in the aftermath of the goal, the first of which forged a chance for an immediate equaliser for Stubbs’ side. After coming in from the touchline, the former Peterborough United man whipped in a tantalising cross towards Danny Ward at the near post who looked destined to score until an intervention from Timm Klose meant the Millers’ had to settle for a corner. Darnell Fisher’s burst down the left wing and cutback paved the way for three successive Millers’ corners, the first of which provided the visitors with the best chance. Newell’s inswinger picked out Brown’s leap at the near post and his header almost dropped for the lurking Jon Taylor who had it taken off his toe as he looked to pull the trigger. Experienced frontman Cameron Jerome had proven a thorn in the Milers’ side in the early exchanges and almost added a second for the hosts shortly after the half-hour mark. His movement in the box following a Canaries’ corner freed him some space before Hoolahan’s cutback picked him out, but the presence of Dael Fry was enough to ensure his shot was a tame one when he eventually found room to release. Vaulks then fired a shot across the bows of Norwich with a 25 yard piledriver which Northern Ireland goalkeeper McGovern gathered cleanly in the centre of his goal. That seemed to spur Stubbs’ side on and they came close again just moments later with arguably their best chance of the half. Greg Halford’s lofted ball was expertly controlled by Ward, who proceeded to charge towards goal and rifle an effort inches wide of the near post. The Millers remained unchanged after the break with Stubbs showing faith in the 11 that began the clash at Carrow Road. That decision almost paid off immediately when a counter attack saw Ward loft a ball over Klose and into the path of Brown who raced towards McGovern’s goal untracked, only to be beaten to the ball by the

onrushing goalkeeper who got clattered into by the Chelsea loanee who stretched to touch it beyond him. Clearly not content on his tally for the afternoon, Hoolahan went in search of a second and almost added one on 51 minutes after skipping free of a couple of light blue shirts before rocketing an effort at goal which required a smart save from Camp to deny him. He had another chance just seconds later when Olsson’s wicked cross from the left found him unattended in the box but he could only direct his header straight into the arms of a grateful Camp. Hoolahan would once again play a part in undoing the Millers though, as Norwich found a second on 65 minutes. It was his cross from the right flank which was met by Jerome in the area, who directed his touch beyond Camp to make it 2-0 and send the Canaries’ faithful into raptures. Norwich’s second seemed to spring the Millers back into life and they did manage to put the ball in the back of the hosts’ goal just a minute later. Vaulks’ absolutely thunderous strike from 25 yards was too hot for McGovern to handle and saw him parry it into the path of Taylor who gleefully slotted home, only to be greeted by the offside flag. The Millers then introduced Blackstock to the attack as his side searched for a way back into the game and that move paid dividends soon after. Following a wonderful chance for Lee Frecklington to pull one back, Blackstock did just that with only his second touch of note. Fisher, who had turned in a superb performance in the left back berth for the Millers, embarked upon another marauding run before delivering a low cross to the near post, where the former Nottingham Forest substitute applied the final touches to make it 2-1 and set up a nervy finish for Alex Neil’s side. The visitors pressed and pressed for an equaliser and in their efforts found themselves vulnerable when Norwich countered through Josh Murphy. His low cross picked out substitute Steven Naismith who couldn’t miss as he rolled the ball over the line at the back post to wrap up the points for Norwich City.

ROVERS’ RUN CONTINUES A BIT LUCKY Rovers made it back to back home wins with a hard fought victory over Colchester United at the Keepmoat Stadium. Tommy Rowe’s clinical finish on the stroke of half-time was enough to secure the three points which closed to Darren Ferguson’s sideto withing three points of leaders Plymouth Argyle. The opening 20 minutes proved to be quite a cagey affair, with both sides battling to gain some control of the game. The first real chance came the way of the visitors as a Luke Prosser knock down from a set piece led to a scramble with a number of ricochets. Almost straight after that Marko Marosi was called into action for the first time, a smart lay off from Chris Porter for the U’s set up Kurtis Guthrie whose effort forced a smart save from the keeper. A ball over the top then caused havoc for Rovers, midfielder Szmodics latched onto it and cut inside before Andy Butler made a timely block which sent the ball out for a corner. Colchester almost took the lead on the stroke of half time, Wright produced a great in-swinging cross from the left hand side and Porter directed a downward header straight at Marosi from just six yards out. Rovers made the visitors pay for that missed chance with the final action of the first half. A ball in from the right was followed by a sublime dummy on the edge of the box from Marquis which left Tommy Rowe unmarked to dink a great finish over the goalkeeper. Rovers created their first chance of the second half in the 51st minute with a chip to the back post from James Coppinger was nodded back across

goal and the stretching Mandeville just failed to get a touch. A drilled ball in from the left caused problems for Rovers, with a glancing header from Guthrie ensuring Marosi again had to be alert. Rovers made a double change with 20 minutes to go, with Baudry and Middleton replacing Wright and Mandeville in an attempt to insert some energy and fresh legs for the final quarter of the game. Marquis then had a great chance to put the game to bed. A long punt clear from Cedric Evina left the front man all alone in the Colchester half and after taking it round the Keeper and looking certain to score he was denied by a goal-line clearance from Brindley. At that stage the game was starting to open up and it was only great alertness from Marosi as he raced out of his goal to save a side footed shot from Szmodics that denied the U’s an equaliser. Colchester had arguably their best chance to equalise with just five minutes to go, a volleyed cross into the box was met by the head of the substitute Denny Johnstone but he could only guide his effort just wide of a post. Szmodics had another half chance for the away side as the game edged into injury time, as the referee waved away a penalty appeal both sets of players seemed to stop before the diminutive midfielder fired over on the half volley. Rovers managed to hold out for the three points in what may prove to be a crucial win come the end of the season, a performance which showed the character needed to ensure they stay challenging for promotion at the top of Sky Bet League Two.

Darren Ferguson admitted that his Doncaster Rovers side were lucky to prosper with a 1-0 win over Colchester United on Saturday. Tommy Rowe’s strike on the stroke of half time proved to be decisive as the hosts extended their unbeaten home run to ten games. “It’s a fantastic result, another three points and a clean sheet; a great result for us,” Ferguson said. “I think those are the games that we need to win and find a way of winning the game. It was by far our worst performance of the season but when the game is like that and Colchester probably feel quite hard done by – as we have many times this season when we’ve lost – you’ve got to win it as it’s a much better weekend then. It was a flat performance and I suppose in a way, we were due one. Did I expect one? No I didn’t but you have to give the opposition credit, they played better than we did on the day.” The game, which marked Ferguson’s first anniversary in charge at Keepmoat Stadium, hinged on goalkeeper Marko Marosi’s save just seconds before Rovers went down the other end to score. He said: “We were fortunate to win; certainly live it seemed that we were fortunate. He made two key saves for me; the one at 0-0 was massive because the likelihood, if that goes in, is that you go in 1-0 down so that was a big save. We’ve deserved a wee bit of luck this season as there’s been times when it’s gone against us. Finding a way of winning when you play poorly is a great recipe for success. It’s been an interesting year so long may I have more at the club.”

STUBBS TELL HIS PLAYERS TO KEEP ON FIGHTING Boss Alan Stubbs stressed he couldn’t fault the effort from his players following defeat to high-flying Norwich City at Carrow Road. Goals from Wes Hoolahan, Cameron Jerome and Steven Naismith ensured that the hosts collected maximum points, despite Dexter Blackstock’s first Rotherham goal giving Stubbs’ side a sniff of a point near the end. Stubbs was again happy with his side’s effort and commitment, emphasising that against other opposition the Millers may well have come away with something. After the game he said: “I thought that we have just played one of the favourites for promotion this season, it was always going to be a difficult game here. I thought that there were parts of the game where we have competed well, but we have contributed to our downfall again. I can’t fault the effort, you can see that they are putting the effort in and they are staying in games better. Towards the end of the game, we are chasing to try and get an equaliser, and then Norwich score late on. When we scored our goal you could see signs of nervousness coming into their game, we just needed to hang in there a little bit longer to see if anything would drop for us. You can see that the desire and the work rate is there, they are giving everything that they have got. I can’t knock them for that.” Blackstock opened his Rotherham account when he tapped in a cross from Darnell Fisher to give the Millers a fighting chance of claiming a point. Stubbs said that he was impressed with the former Nottingham Forest marksman, who is now closing in on full fitness following his switch to South Yorkshire. “There is a positive for Dexter, he comes on and he gives us something different to what we have been playing with,” Stubbs added. “That will be good for his own confidence, not that he necessarily needs it. Great for him, it is his first goal since he has signed but it still doesn’t take away the disappointment that we have lost the game. They have to keep putting the effort in; they have to stick together as a team. They have to stay in games and if we keep doing that then we are not going to keep coming up against one, two and three in the division every week. It is important that when we do play teams in mid-table, and in and around us in the league, that we take points off of them.”

DOMINANT BLADES BATTER VALE HAPPY WILDER United scored four and had four more disallowed in a totally dominant performance against Port Vale. Defender Ethan Ebanks-Landell scored twice in the first half and Mark Duffy and Stefan Scougall added more in the second period. Strikers Done and Sharp both had two goals chalked off! Blades chief Wilder named the same starting XI from the previous League One encounter, against Fleetwood Town. There was just one change on the bench with Lavery included after injury. Visitors Vale included former Blades as their manager, assistant boss and captain in Ribeiro, Brown and Purkiss. In the October sunshine, a lively start saw both sides enjoy an amount of endeavour going forward. The first chance saw Duffy’s inswing free-kick met by O’Connell, but the defender could not find the target and Coutts shot weakly at

goalkeeper Alnwick after he spotted an opening. Foley shot wide for Port Vale, whilst United were indebted to Freeman tracking back 50yards to prevent Grant getting a free shot at goal. A break from the resulting corner saw the Blades find the net but the lead was not forthcoming. Fleck and Duffy were instrumental in driving the play from one end to the other but Done was adjudged offside as he nodded home. United, however, did grab the lead with the next meaningful attack. Fleck’s deep corner saw EBANKSLANDELL lose his marker and perfectly place a header beyond Alnwick’s right hand. It was the sign for United to begin to dominate for a spell. Duffy cut inside and shot wide and then another goal was disallowed on 33 minutes. Fleck’s effort appeared to be deflected in by Sharp and although the referee initially

gave the goal, a consultation with one of his assistants resulted in it being chalked off. Fleck went close again moments later, his 30-yard shot was pushed around a post by Alnwick, before a second was finally added on the stroke of half-time. It was from another corner on the right, this time taken by Coutts, and Vale wasted a number of opportunities to clear before EBANKSLANDELL hooked home from close range. The Blades had a third goal disallowed with the first effort of the second half, Done was flagged offside when he turned in Duffy’s right-wing cross. Paterson had a shot deflected wide for the visitors but United were firmly on top and added a third just after the hour mark. On the break, Fleck carried the ball for more than 50 yards before laying off to Sharp, whose shot was blocked on the line by

Purkiss but DUFFY was well-placed to smash in the rebound. Moments later United had a fourth ‘goal’ disallowed, this time Sharp was called offside when he turned in O’Connell’s header back across the box. Moore, quickly off his line, made a tremendous save to thwart Jones on 77 minutes before United added a fourth through the unlikely source of Scougall’s head after all three of Wilder’s substitutions contributed. Hussey and Chapman were involved on the left before Sharp challenged in the air, with the ball falling for SCOUGALL nod home from close range. Chapman was denied by an impressive Alnwick save as United looked for a fifth but the Vale goal survived any more scares in four minutes of added time before their misery was completed.

BLADES V TYKES IN SHOWDOWN! Ethan EbanksLandell is the latest signing for the Blades team that will compete against the Yorkshire County Cricket at a special event held at Bramall Lane later this month and offer fans the opportunity to get up close and personal with several sporting personalities on the night. Famous names from Sheffield United and star players from Yorkshire Cricket will meet in a unique sporting clash in aid of United’s Former Players Association and Tykes’ skipper Andrew Gale’s benefit year. A ‘Question of Sport’ style football and cricket quiz, hosted by Look North presenter Harry Gration, will feature Gale and Yorkshire playing colleagues Tim Bresnan, Richard Pyrah and Steve Patterson, along with Jack Leaning and Jared Warner taking on Blades boss Chris Wilder, former defensive star Tony Kenworthy, United captain Billy Sharp and current midfielder Chris Basham, in addition to fans favourite EbanksLandell and United’s

greatest ever player Tony Currie. The event will take place in the TC10 Lounge and International Bar at Bramall Lane on Thursday 20th October (7pm for a 7.45 start). Andrew Gale said: “I’m really looking forward to the evening. As a big football fan it’s great that Sheffield United are helping me out in my benefit year. We haven’t got

the brains of Britain in our team but hopefully we can get one over on the footballers!” Dave McCarthy, Sheffield United Operations Director, said: “It promises to be a great night for two great causes - Galey’s benefit and also our Former Players Association. There will be a superbly produced question and answer session on stage, an

many headlines, but his ability to marshal those around him has created the foundations for the United defence. Jack O’Connell had a difficult start to season, struggling to partner with James Wilson, the formerBrentford defender looks far more comfortable in the back five formation. Ethan EbanksLandell is quickly becoming a fan favourite, a late goal against Fleetwood to salvage a point and an

best performance of the season, but we’ve played decent football all season, we’ve filled the box better though and scored four goals from inside the box as a result.” The Blades boss felt it was a near perfect performance, adding: “Supporters will walk away reflecting on a superb win, the goals and the clean sheet, but for me I look for the small things. Freeman’s tackle in the first-half at nil-nil is crucial, whilst the likes of Scougall and Chapman are harassing defenders right to the final whistle despite the game being in the bag. It’s the ugly bits that give you the chance to dominate like we did. Work ethic earns you the right to express yourself and we won headers, tackles and races throughout, whilst Simon Moore make a crucial save in the second-half. Billy and Matty Done will be miffed not to have scored in a 4-0 victory but both of them have played a big role again.”

DEFENCE KEY The victory against Port Vale extends Sheffield United’s unbeaten league run to eight games. The remarkable run has taken the Blades from bottom of the League to fifth in the table, with a game in hand on those above them. The importance of the United defence during the run cannot be understated. The introduction of Jake Wright, after the Blades’ last league defeat to Millwall, marked the upturn in form. The 30year-old won’t steal

Chris Wilder unsurprisingly described United’s comprehensive victory over Port Vale at Bramall Lane as ‘the best performance of the season’. A first-half double from influential defender Ethan Ebanks-Landell laid the foundations for an impressive victory over Bruno Ribeiro’s Valiants, before second-half strikes from Mark Duffy and substitute Stefan Scougall put the icing on the cake for the Blades. And Wilder was beaming in the aftermath of the success, remarking: “It was a great day at the office. We’ve been threatening to do that for a while, so to do it against a team that were previously riding above is in the league is fantastic. We actually had the ball in the back of the net eight times which is remarkable, we were disappointed with the decision at 1-0 and to be the fair to the referee at half-time he came and admitted his mistake. It was the

unlikely brace against Port Vale have helped, but his strength and power are assets that were vacant in the Blades defence for the entirety of last season. Kieron Freeman and Daniel Lafferty have operated as wing-backs during the unbeaten run. Unlike last season, where Freeman’s opportunities were limited due the necessity to play big money signing John Brayford, the 24-yearold has thrived after his reintroduction to

the team and looks likely to provide a number of goals and assists this season. In modern football, playing a back five is often viewed in a negative light, however Wilder has deployed it in a

fashion that allows the Blades to control games and get forward more often. If the run continues no doubt expectations and murmurings of promotion will surely return to Bramall Lane again.

OWLS END TERRIERS HOME RUN A Fernando Forestieri penalty gave the Owls their second away win of the season, while Huddersfield dropped their first home points. And it was a well-deserved win for the Owls, who hit the woodwork twice before the game’s

defining moment in the second half. Indeed, they took the game to the high-flying Terriers and might have been ahead inside five minutes. A concerted bout of pressure saw Kieran Lee and Gary Hooper go close before David Jones struck the crossbar

with a teasing cross from the right. Wednesday continued on the front foot but Huddersfield improved as the contest progressed. Winger Van La Parra was the hosts’ main threat, with a range of eye-catching skills from the left flank. And it was the former Wolves man who created his side’s best chance of the first half, cutting in to find Nahki Wells but the striker’s shot was smothered by Keiren Westwood. The Owls’ keeper was called into action moments later, this time saving a Kasey Palmer snapshot from just inside the penalty area. Wednesday

countered, and Adam Reach was denied by Chris Lowe just as the winger was about to pull the trigger. Then, just after the restart, Forestieri came within a lick of paint of breaking the deadlock. The Italian showed terrific skill in pulling a Westwood punt from the sky before executing a clever chip that bounced against the post and back to safety. Huddersfield hit back with Lowe brushing the top of the net from a set piece – before Wednesday took the lead on 67 minutes. La Parra handled a Tom Lees shot in the area, the referee pointed to the

CARVALHAL HAPPY WITH HIS GAME PLAN Carlos Carvalhal said the Owls executed their game plan to perfection as they beat Huddersfield 1-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium. The game was fairly even until midway in the second half, when mounting pressure from Wednesday ended with Terriers midfielder Rajiv Van La Parra handballing in his own area from a

Tom Lees shot. Fernando Forestieri stepped up and calmly struck the ball past goalkeeper Danny Ward into the top corner to give the away side the lead. Wednesday saw the game out to get three crucial points in what was Huddersfield’s first home defeat of the season. Carvalhal said: “Today we played against a very strong

team. They have a good dynamic and they cause a lot of problems to all the teams they play. “However, we had plenty of time to prepare the game and learn how to play against Huddersfield. We worked very hard and everybody defended, including the strikers, and we blocked their dynamic. We put in a lot

of work in the training so that we didn’t come up against any surprises today. Today was a victory of quality. People ask me a lot about the partnerships in our team, but I don’t agree with this, because there’s only one partnership that matters, and that is Sheffield Wednesday as a whole.”

spot, and Forestieri sent Danny Ward the wrong way from 12 yards. With the Terriers pressing for an equaliser, gaps appeared for the counter and Gary Hooper almost made the points safe only to be thwarted from underneath the bar by Mark Hudson. Liam Palmer then rampaged

forward into the danger zone but Ward prevented what would have been a rare goal for the defender. Huddersfield threw everything forward in the final moments but the Owls held firm and advanced to seventh in the table, outside the play-offs only on goal difference.
