FARM ON THE MOVE KEEPS RESIDENTS HOPPY Animals flocked to the doorstep of Sheffield’s sheltered accommodation as part of a brand new idea to bring the experience of a farm to those who struggle to get out. Sheffield City Council and Heeley City Farm’s ‘Farming comes to you’ travelled to Springwater House in Hackenthorpe last week, the first time this has happened. Residents enjoyed getting out of their flats and feeding and petting mini goats, ferrets, guinea pigs, ducks and rabbits. All were provided and supervised by Heeley City Farm.
Lee Pearse, from Heeley City Farm, said: “We often take it for granted when we visit the countryside, local parks, animal farms and even owning a pet. As we age and our lives can change for many reasons these things can be lost and it is easy to become isolated, even in a sheltered living environment. “Farming Comes To You aims to support the continuation of some these happening and we are very happy and excited to be able to work with Sheltered Housing for the first time with taking our animals
to different settings” Springwater House is one of 30 councilrun sheltered accommodation schemes that support 1,500 residents. Cllr Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Housing said: “Farming Comes To You is a great idea which gives elderly residents the chance to do something a bit different with other people. “It’s just one of the things we do in our sheltered housing schemes to help people interact with others and enjoy life. “It is important that our
older generations do not feel isolated. There’s a lot going on in Sheffield to help people with this. I hope everyone enjoyed the farm animal visit.” For three hours the 40 residents were able to enjoy the first of four mini farm events and

meet people who live in the area. There will be three further sessions taking place before the end of the March in different sheltered accommodation across the city.

I got an e-mail saying ‘At Google Earth we can read maps backwards!’ I thought, “That’s just spam!” I have a phobia of over-engineered buildings... It’s a complex complex complex. My girlfriend said she’s leaving me for another guy because I’m too obsessed with football. So I asked “on loan or a transfer?” I was asked in a interview, “describe your life in a nutshell”... “Well it’s very dark and cramped” At an interview.. First question: “Describe yourself in 3 words” Me: “Not very good with numbers” Whatever you do in life, always give 100%. Unless you’re donating blood. There was a recent study that tried to pinpoint the effect that alcohol has on walking... the result was staggering.

Take That are set to bring their fans yet another unmissable live experience when they hit the road in 2017 with Wonderland Live. Gary, Mark and Howard have announced 22 dates across the UK and Ireland, in support of their brand new album Wonderland, scheduled for release in March 2017. And for the first time ever, the band’s main stage will be in the centre of the arena floor, giving their fans a truly unique and memorable experience like never before. Take That are renowned for their incredible live shows and for pushing the boundaries of live production, having created some of the most memorable stage shows in UK music history. They are the only band in the world to have had a huge mechanical elephant as part of the cast for their Circus Tour, not to mention a 70 foot man named Om who rose out of the stage on The Progress Tour. Walls of water, enormous holograms, circus performers, aerialists, a custom made flying machine and a huge ball of burning fire have all graced their stages and the Wonderland Live Tour will be no less spectacular. Take That’s Wonderland Live is the first time that fans will see the band perform brand new material from their forthcoming studio album Wonderland, due out in March, as well as their much-loved classics, performed in the round. Take That are one of the UK’s most successful acts with an enviable career spanning three decades. The band have sold over 7.6 million concert tickets in their lifetime, setting the record for the fastest selling tour of all time in UK history when 1.34 million tickets were snapped up for their Progress Live Tour in less than 24 hours. In the UK alone, they have achieved seven UK Number One albums, 15 Number One singles, sold over 45 million records, won six Ivor Novellos, and eight BRIT Awards. Internationally, they have scored an incredible 54 No.1 hits and 35 No.1 albums. Their last album III, the first a newly

PLAN TO SELL ANNUITIES ABANDONED BY GOVERNMENT The Treasury’s decision to abandon plans to let pensioners raise money by selling their annuities has been welcomed by the pensions industry. The controversial idea was first aired in March 2015 by the then Chancellor George Osborne as part of his plan for “pension freedoms”. Despite deciding last December that the plan would go ahead next April, the government has now changed its mind. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said it was the “right decision”. The government admitted that too many pensioners might be lured into selling their annuities - an income for life - in exchange for a lump sum. Acknowledging that most people would be best advised to stick with their current annuities, Treasury spokesman Simon Kirby, said: “Allowing consumers to sell on their annuity income was always dependent on balancing the creation of an effective market with making sure consumers are properly protected. It has become clear that we cannot guarantee consumers will get good value for money in a market that is likely to be small and limited.” But the former pensions minister Ros
Altmann said it was a missed opportunity. She said: “It will be disappointing to tens of thousands of people who bought an annuity they didn’t want, and didn’t need.” Steve Webb, the pensions minister at the time of the so-called pension freedoms, said the issue had not been handled well by the government. “There did need to be a lot of potential buyers for this market to work,” he said. “If you’ve got an annuity to sell, it’s very hard to work out what it’s worth if you’re a member of the public.” Industry experts welcomed the move. Tom McPhail, of Hargreaves Lansdown, said the government’s decision was right. “After extensive research, at the beginning of September [we] announced that we would not be participating in the secondary annuity market. The risks to the vast majority of annuity holders outweigh the benefits for the small minority who could benefit,” he pointed out. The ABI agreed that the government was right to abandon the plan. “The industry has consistently supported the freedom and choice reforms, but we agree with the government that the secondary annuity market came with considerable risks for
customers, including from unregulated buyers,” said Rob Yuille, the ABI’s head of retirement policy. The government’s plan was controversial from the start. Critics pointed out that anyone among the estimated five million people with annuities who sold them would almost certainly receive a poor deal. The passing of time would mean that they would inevitably get poor value, receiving far less than they paid. Insurance firms willing to buy secondhand annuities, and brokers willing to arrange the deals, would charge for their services, eroding the value of the annuity sale. Last April, the Financial Conduct Authority underlined these concerns, saying that a new “secondary” market in annuities would mean a “significant risk of poor outcomes for consumers”. The regulator said that annuities were “inherently difficult for consumers to value, and consumers who will be able to participate in this market will include a higher proportion of older, more vulnerable consumers”.

Social isolation and loneliness are two of the biggest public health challenges facing our society. Nearly 16,000 older people experience loneliness often in Sheffield (Office National Statistics/ English Longitudinal Study of Ageing). This issue is the cause of higher rates of mortality and risk of death comparable to smoking and alcohol consumption. South Yorkshire Housing Association is leading Age Better in Sheffield, a crosssector partnership that has the ambition, expertise and influence to confront an issue of this scale. By intervening early, we will address these issues and limit dependence on more costly services. The programme will drive a system change in Sheffield through creative, innovative projects. We’re looking for organisations who have contact with older people who may be isolated or lonely, and to refer them to one of our Age Better in Sheffield projects. From the Proud to Ask

The Doncaster Phoenix Theatre Company are back with another classic musical. This year they will be performing Rogers and Hammerstein’s first musical collaboration, Oklahoma! Set in a Western Indian Territory just after the turn of the century, where handsome cowboy Curley falls for winsome farm girl Laurey, but he has a rival for her affections – the sinister farm hand, Jud. Also Ado Anne is torn between Will Parker and Ali Hakim and doesn’t know which to fall for, and there is a high spirited rivalry between farmers and cowmen. A fantastic show full of energy for all the family to enjoy, including songs such as Surrey with a Fringe on Top, Oh What a Beautiful Morning and The Farmer and the Cowman. This
show will be sure to have you singing along and talking about it for weeks.
The performances run from November 8th-12th, and tickets are on sale now from the box office on 01302 303959. ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
As usual, I’ve had a couple of sessions on the bank this week, but my pike season continues to stutter… This time of year, often sees anglers decide that now is the right time to try and catch their first pike, which I can’t disagree with, but new pike anglers need to consider a few things first before venturing forth. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen new pikers completely unprepared to put their first snapper on the bank, and I don’t think ignorance is an excuse any more, there is far too much good information available, from knowledgeable anglers, to claim otherwise. I enjoy catching pike, but I also enjoy returning them safely, and watching them swim away to fight another day, so, although I travel light, I don’t scrimp on the essentials. A large unhooking mat is a must; thickly padded, and with sufficient surface area to accommodate a big fish. A tiny roll up mat is better than nothing, but it really isn’t enough if a large pike is landed. When it comes to unhooking pike, as a minimum, I take side cutter pliers, long forceps, and long nose pliers, which are enough to deal with any awkward situation. Side cutters are necessary to cut both trace and treble, a reality when fish are unavoidably deeply hooked, and when nothing must be left behind which could harm the fish. Long forceps and pliers are used to remove trebles without getting your fingers near those fearsome teeth. I use semi-barbed trebles too, with only one ‘baitsaver’ barb to keep a dead bait on the hook; it makes things much easier! I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to be gentle with these impressive fish. The gill rakers and other structures at the back of the throat can be easily damaged by rough, or inexperienced handling, so if you are new to pike fishing, do your research, and better still, go with someone who can show you the ropes, and make sure your fish are properly treated. Enjoy the fight, then treat them right! I’ve had two visits to pike waters this week, one a tackle graveyard that cost me several leads and other hardware, and to which I will not return, the other, a trip to Rode Pool, a delightful lake I’ve already lost fish on this year. One great tip I picked off an angler named Dru Lunney whilst we shot an Angler’s Mail feature involved using red trebles instead of black, or if you can’t get hold of them, use red treble sleeves on your traces. The reason makes perfect sense; use black hooks and sleeves, and if a pike is hooked deeply, they are very tricky to see, never mind grip with forceps, but if you use red, a much more visible colour, life is a lot easier, and it’s a tip I was grateful for this week. My deadbait rig consists of a simple trace, and a fairly heavy lead to pin it to the bottom. Onto the trebles, a bait is mounted, and the lot lobbed out gently before tightening up, releasing the bale arm, and pinching the line into a bobbin. It’s not complicated, and if pike are feeding, and you’re in
the right spot, then you can expect to catch…which is why it’s so important to be properly prepared. Within thirty minutes, the line pinged out from the clip, and I struck immediately into a small pike of around nine pounds which had picked up a whole smelt. It quickly came to the surface, and although I’d quickly made contact, I couldn’t see any sign of the trebles, so I kicked open the tool roll to have the right kit immediately to hand whilst I bought the fish to the bank. Pike are easy to ‘chin’ out of the water, so this fish was quickly laid on the mat, the trace disconnected, and I opened the pike’s mouth to find the deadbait engulfed, with no sign of the bottom hooks. This is where a little bit of time and delicate effort is paramount. I don’t tie on my hookbaits, so it was relatively simple to twist the smelt out of the way, and remove it to give me a bit of space. Small pike are much harder to deal with, as you just haven’t got the room to work in! The top treble was quickly located and moved aside whilst I tried to locate the other. Moving the gill plate up, I could see the red sleeve of the treble, but the barb was unfortunately nicked right at the top of the fish’s stomach; a tricky operation to remove safely, and one where care is vital. I didn’t need to pull the stomach up as is possible for experienced pike anglers, instead managing to gently part the extremely delicate gill rakers, taking care not to damage them, and snip the point off the hook with the sidecutters, then remove it backwards instead of forcing forceps down towards the stomach area. With the trace and trebles removed, it was an easy task to slide the forceps between the gills and take out the remaining hook point, leaving nothing behind, and without causing harm. It took no more than a minute or two, but rather than mess about with pictures, or weighing the pike, I wanted it back in the water, just in case. It was gently laid in the margin, whilst I held the tail to allow it time to recover. Within a few seconds, the pike was ready to go, and slunk off into the depths, fit and healthy, the way it should be… A second pike followed soon after, a similar size, but lightly hooked on just one treble, so much less fuss once landed. A quick snap (geddit?) and another pristine fish was returned, which sadly proved to be the last of the visit, but at least I’m up and running now for the new season. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying don’t go out and catch your first pike, (I’ll even take you if you are near me and fancy it) but I am asking that you consider your tackle and preparation very carefully before you do. Pike are awesome creatures, deserving of respect and care, so don’t be the one angler who gets it wrong and causes harm; there is no need, and if you are correctly kitted out, then you will enjoy it so much more!

LOCAL FOOTBALL by Michael Clarke
Last week the focus was mainly on the League Cup, but this week the focus returned to league action. There were 24 games played across the four leagues on Saturday. It was somewhat of a goal frenzy with a season high of 129 goals scored. Premier Division League leaders Swallownest FC made it back-toback home wins with a 2-0 victory over struggling Denaby United. Jamie Hopkins and Jordan Cocks were both on target for Swallownest. Defending champions Frecehville are keeping up the pressure on the leaders though, just three points back in second. Frecheville were big 7-1 winners at home against bottom side Denaby Main. Third place Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves stretched their unbeaten run to eight games with a 2-2 draw at home with AFC Penistone Church. Stocksbridge have not lost since the opening day of the campaign. Jubilee Sports claimed a big point, as they held fourth placed Houghton Main to a 1-1 draw at Middlecliffe Lane. The point is not enough to pull them out of the bottom three. A point in front of Jubilee are MIllmoor Juniors, who slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Wombwell Main at Rockingham Community Centre. Goals from Matt Blakey and Nicky Baxter gave North Gawber Colliery a 2-0 home win over Swinton Athletic. The win ends a run of four successive defeats for North Gawber. Division One Perhaps the surprise of the day came at the Oughtibridge Warm Memorial ground, where league leaders Brinsworth Whitehill fell 6-0 to Oughtibridge WMFC. Brinworth were previously unbeaten in the league and had only dropped two points all season (seven games). Wickersley FC took the opportunity to take spot from Brinsworth, with a end-to-end 4-3 win over Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 at Chaucer School. South Kirkby Colliery sit in third after a routine 2-0 home win over mid-table Sheffield Bankers. South Kirkby are five points off the pace, but have played less games than Wickersley (five less) and Brinsworth (one less). Goals from Tony Bennett (3), Jamie Heavey (2), Spencer Clarke (2), Connor Cocks, Stevie Bennett, Ben Elmore and Billy Smith gave Grimethorpe Sports a headline grabbing 11-0 win over MIllmoor Juniors Reserves. Grimethorpe have amassed a goal tally of 38 goals in the six games they have played thus far. AFC Dronfield were also in the goals, as they beat Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves 8-0 at the MDC Sports Stadium. The First Division was full of goals, with Silkstone United beating Davy FC 4-3 and Caribbean Sports winning 4-3 against High Green Villa as well. Division Two North League leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels Development Squad slipped to their first defeat of the season, as they lost 2-1 at home to Euroglaze FC. Taylor Jenkins and Adam Wright were both on target for Euroglaze. Stocksbridge had won their first eight league games before a 2-2 draw with FC Graceholme last time out. A Ryan Barlow brace inspired Dodworth Miners Welfare FC to a 3-0 home win over Houghton Main Reserves. Dodworth are three points off the leaders
with a game spare. Hepworth United sit just a point further back after a impressive 14-0 away win against Working Wonders. Wombell Main Development Squad ended a run of nine games without a victory, with a hard-fought 3-2 win against Bawtry Town at the Doncaster Athletics Arena. Division Two South Kiveton Park are the new leaders in the Division Two South, after a 4-1 home win over New Bohemians. Jamie Harrison, Matt Plant, James Harrison and Chris Lovett were all on target for the hosts. Davy FC Reserves lead the chasing pack, after they also won 4-1 against Sheffield Bankers Reserves. Only goal difference separates the top two. Millmoor Juniors Development are just a point behind in third. Goals from Matt Hill (2), Jason Kirk and Jamie Major gave Millmoor a 4-2 win over Caribbean Sports Reserves at Firvale School. Millmoor have played two games less than the top two. Sheffield Lane Top made it four wins from five played, with a 2-1 win over fourth placed Swinton Athletic at the Civil Service Ground. NEW GAFFER REFELCTS ON FIRST GAME NEW SIGNING New Rotherham United manager Kenny Jackett praised the effort from his players after a narrow defeat in his first game in charge against Reading. The Millers tested Reading stopper Ali Al Habsi on numerous occasions but Jackett’s side fell to late goal from substitute Paul McShane, as the Royals secured maximum points at AESSEAL New York Stadium. “There was a big effort by the players today and a lot of commitment,” Jackett said after the game. “There was some naivety in some situations, but we can work on that and we created a lot of chances and I felt we deserved a goal or two. “We started the second half very well as well and we had several chances. Danny Ward’s one and even
the one late on where we’re down and young Forde got through on the ‘keeper who made a very good double block.” After accepting the position of first team manager yesterday, the former Millwall and Wolves manager wasted no time in taking to the dugout, receiving a terrific reception from the home faithful. His side responded too with a performance full of effort, as Jackett restored the likes of Richard Wood and Joe Mattock who struggled for a regular berth under the previous regime. Whilst Jackett was pleased to recall two of his more senior players he admitted the younger members of his squad still looked to be learning the rigours of The Championship, but praised them for their
wholehearted attitude. “As a group it’s making sure we’re experienced enough which is a big thing because there’s a lot of young players putting a lot of effort in,” he added. “Their knowledge and understanding of winning games in the Championship is something that needs to come. “It was an end-to-end game and they’re a good possession side but we created a lot of chances against them and gave them a lot of problems. We’re on the right lines, we’re disappointed with the result but we need to keep the commitment as high as that.”
CHAIRMAN DELIGHTED AT JACKETT APPOINTMENT
he was happy to act quickly to appoint a manager that ticked all the right boxes. “It was probably the best interview I have had with somebody since I took over the club,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “Kenny was available and we acted swiftly because we knew that he has got the experience, he has managed a great club like Wolves and if you check the stats out his record is superb. “We had a good feeling he would be right, then when we sat down to interview him I liked his enthusiasm. We talked about the players, the style of play and he was talking our language – he was talking Rotherham football. “We had long meetings with him, he spoke with confidence and the Board members who were present were very impressed with what he had to say, and what he could do for Rotherham United.” Jackett arrives in the AESSEAL New York Stadium hotseat with a wealth of experience at second tier level having managed the likes of Millwall and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the division and the Millers’ Chairman is hoping that will bear fruit as he looks to lift the club off the foot of the Sky Bet Championship. “We are very excited to have someone who has the experience that he does in The Championship, and I think that will make a big difference as we move forward,” Stewart continued. “I’m not looking for miracles, I’m looking for a guy that knows what he is doing and can get the systems working like we have seen in the past and start making statements in the Championship, but more importantly getting the points that we feel we’ve lost.” The Millers spent fees in the summer to add the likes of Will Vaulks and Dominic Ball to the ranks, including a record-breaking sum to bring
Jon Taylor to South Yorkshire but the Millers Chairman insists the new manager will receive similar backing should he require it when the window reopens in January. “He talked about that and said ‘what about when the window becomes available’. We’ve had managers in the past that have had many, many players and we have history on that. As a Board, we’ve always worked with the manager and we want what he wants,” Stewart explained. “These are lads that we felt, not just the manager, have got a part to play. I’m sure that when it comes to January he’ll be making certain demands and we’re here to work with him to build a team that is sustainable not just for this season, but the next two or three.” The Watford-born boss will face his first test in Rotherham United colours on Saturday as Reading visit AESSEAL New York Stadium in the Sky Bet Championship and Stewart is confident that he will feel the benefit of the home crowd on his maiden outing at the weekend. “I’m sure people will get behind the guy and I know that it will be something to kick us on again and it’s something that I’m looking forward to. I, like the fans, didn’t like the results that we were getting added to the investment that had gone it, it wasn’t right,” Stewart explained. “I think it was crucial to get him in early because we have 11 games left before January, so he has time to take stock now and have a look and give opportunities to the players.”
Rotherham United Chairman Tony Stewart says that newly-appointed first team boss Kenny Jackett was the standout managerial candidate from all of his previous searches during his time at the helm of the club. The Millers wasted no time in swooping for the services of the 54-year-old, who was appointed as Alan Stubbs’ successor just two days after confirmation of his departure and Stewart insists

ODEMWINGIE LOOKS TO REPAY FAITH
New Rotherham United signing Peter Odemwingie has backed himself to repay the faith of new boss Kenny Jackett after completing a move to AESSEAL New York Stadium this evening. The former West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City striker has penned a deal until January to become Jackett’s first signing as Rotherham manager. After securing a deal with the Millers, the Nigeria international was keen to thank Jackett for giving him the opportunity to return to the professional ranks. “It went quickly. Only a few days ago I got in touch with the manager Kenny Jackett,” Peter told Millers Player HD. “Knowing him, he is a manager that believes in you and that gives me a lot of positivity. He obviously believes in me and thinks I can do a job for him, so I am looking forward to a new start and doing my best for the team.” The former Premier League hot-shot says that the situation that Rotherham find themselves in will give him an extra edge, with the ex-Bristol City loanee claiming the ‘pressure’ will help bring out his very best. “I am looking forward to this,” he added. “I love pressure as a player, I love situations like this, and a lot of times I have delivered, I hope it will be the same in this club. I want to play out of my skin because there is a level that I want to get back to and the only way to get back to that is to do my best and work really hard. “It has been a while but I have tried to stay fit and keep on top of things. I have had a few training sessions in the last few days and I feel ready to go, I don’t think it will take me long to get back to my best.”
FERGUSON DISAPPOINTED WITH DEFEAT Darren Ferguson felt Rovers might have snatched a point at Blackpool despite a disappointing performance. Rovers trailed 4-1 and threatened a fightback after Tommy Rowe converted a penalty to make it 4-2, but hopes of claiming a draw were as good as ended when Seasiders keeper Sam Slocombe saved a second spot-kick from the midfielder. Ferguson said: “I got into them a bit at halftime, but then we conceded two goals in three minutes. We wanted to play behind their two central midfield players, where Rowe and James
Coppinger played, but just didn’t do it well enough. “Then we got back in it with a penalty. We got the second penalty and at that point thought we could get back in it if we scored and give them a really nervous final few minutes, but once he missed it was game over. “Even if it finished 4-3 we’d think they had a right go. I’d have bet heavily we’d have had once more chance in seven minutes, I really would. You know what it’s like when teams come back and there are some nerves in the ground. But you can’t
concede four goals like that.” Ferguson felt that, despite scoring inside the opening minute, his side never really found a rhythm in the match. He said: “Scoring so early might have been the worst thing that happened, because after that we didn’t get any flow to our game. “It was a bad day for us, to score two goals away from home and still lose the game. We feel we have goals in the team and showed that again, the disappointing thing for me is we didn’t try enough of the things we worked on in the week.”
Club Doncaster help young fan raise funds so he can score more goals! Club Doncaster have donated two signed shirts to a young Rovers fan to help raise funds for a lightweight oxygen machine which will give the 11-year-old a new lease of life.
A chronic lung disease before birth meant Addison Connor’s organs did not develop properly and he needs to have an oxygen tank with him at all times - this means an adult is always with him to push the heavy trolley it is on, even when he is at school. With doctors believing a lung transplant is not possible, it is hoped a new oxygen tank which he can carry in a backpack will allow him to live as normal a childhood as possible. Rovers Club Captain Andy Butler surprised Addison after a training session at the Club Doncaster Academy, presenting him with two shirts - one for him, and one to help in the fundraising - and learn a little about his life. Addison said: “This new backpack would be really important as I am a bit fed up of always having a grown-up with me. I’m really looking forward to going off with my friends or learning to ride my bike, and scoring more goals!”
Addison’s mother Rachel Blyth said: “The generosity of Club Doncaster is really appreciated, and I’d like to thank Andy for taking the time to stop and talk to Addison and the rest of the lads. “He doesn’t let the tubes hold him back in life but this new backpack will give him the freedom other children take for granted, he’s at an age where he wants to be able to run off with his friends and not have me, his dad or a teacher always besides him.” Andy said: “Addison told me all about the goals he scores when playing football, and I hope he’ll score even more when he gets this backpack. “It was a pleasure to meet Addison and his friends, and I will definitely be coming down to watch his progress.” The shirt will be used at a fundraising day, which includes a junior football tournament, which will run from 11.30am on Sunday October 30.

YORKSHIRE DERBY PRODUCES WILDER’S VIEW SIX-GOAL THRILLER This Yorkshire derby lived up to its prematch billing and a point each was well deserved in an actionpacked game. Billy Sharp twice put the Blades ahead but it took a Chris Basham leveller to share the spoils. A sell-out away end of 2,716 applauded the efforts of Chris Wilder’s team at the final whistle. For the encounter, boss Wilder named an unchanged team following the midweek victory over Shrewsbury Town. O’Connell, back from illness, took Whiteman’s place on the bench. Bradford’s starting XI included three ex-Blades - Law, Clarke and Kilgallon. As expected, there was a lively start, although a lack of chances early on. Clarke should have done better from a Law cross before United took the lead on 18 minutes. Lafferty and Wright did well to win possession in Bradford’s half before Duffy floated a ball over Vincelot’s head for SHARP to expertly nod into the top corner, beating Doyle, who
appeared well-placed. United went close to a second moments later, from a Coutts corner, the home ‘keeper failed to collect and Lafferty’s shot was wide, although he argued his effort had been deflected. Basham and Duffy picked up bookings but again United went close. Another teasing cross from Duffy saw Done pull to the back post but he could not get enough purchase to beat Doyle. The game was very open, maybe too much so for Wilder’s liking, and Bradford levelled on 35 minutes. Kilgallon’s low cross from the left eluded a crowded sixyard box and found its way to CLARKE, who touched home at the back post. The final ten minutes of the entertaining period were also end-to-end, but with a lack of clear chances, although Done picked up United’s third booking. Two minutes into the second half United had the ball in the net but Sharp was adjudged to have fouled Dieng from Duffy’s quick free-kick.
Sharp also fired over after Done was a pest but the leading scorer and skipper was not to be denied a second goal. On 51 minutes, a freekick wide on the left saw Fleck catch out the whole home defence and SHARP was left unmarked to beat Doyle from close range. Bradford hit back. Cullen’s shot was pushed around the post by Moore, although the referee gave a goalkick, but the home side levelled again around the hour mark. A cross from the right was mis-kicked by Hanson but the ball dropped perfectly for HIWULA to touch in at the back post. The action was frantic and Wilder added Basham to the midfield in an offensive move. Sharp turned inside from the left but was denied a hat-trick by Doyle pushing his shot away and then Bradford took the lead for the first time. Kilgallon’s cross from left was turned in by DIENG. Wilder made a double change, introducing Scougall and Lavery,
and within minutes the Blades were level. A Fleck corner saw Hanson miss his kick and BASHAM ran away to celebrate after the ball was touched in, via the back post. With 15 minutes to go a forward ball saw Lavery put the home defence under pressure but again Doyle saved from Sharp. At the other end, late on, a break saw Hiwula head against the crossbar following Law’s cross. Moore may have added a vital touch. The final moments were tense. Duffy shot at Doyle and four minutes of added time began with a Bradford corner. The home side also won a free-kick in a dangerous position late on but United defended well and protected a valuable point.
Chris Wilder felt Saturday’s six-goal thriller against Bradford City at Valley Parade was a ‘great advert’ for League One and admitted a draw was a fair result. Billy Sharp left West Yorkshire with the match ball, despite Chris Basham officially being credited with the Blades equaliser after strikes from Billy Clarke and Jordy Hiwula had twice restored parity for the Bantams prior to Timothee Dieng putting City in front. Reflecting on a breathless encounter, Wilder laughed: “I’m glad it was a boring local derby with no goals and nothing to talk about! “Serious though, the game had everything and it was a great advert for the division. “Bradford started better
than us but we grew into the game and got an excellent opening goal. “We should go 2-0 up though, Matt Done knows he should be scoring chances like that, but it was a fantastic game with two honest teams going about it the right way.” Wilder added: “In the end, any result was possible, so we’ll take a point and the unbeaten run is extended to ten matches. “Bradford were impressive, they have a lot of good players and I’m sure Stuart (McCall) will have a lot of respect for us too. “We wanted to win, we had the right and leftback playing as wingers chasing the three points in injury-time and whilst I applaud their desire and enthusiasm, a draw is a good result in the circumstances.”
Blades: Moore, Fleck, Basham, Sharp, Done (Scougall 70), Wright, Coutts (Lavery 70), Freeman, EbanksLandell, Duffy, Lafferty. Unused: Hussey, O’Connell, Brown, Ramsdale, Chapman.
UNITED PLAYERS SUPPORT BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH United has showed their support this Breast Cancer Awareness Month by visiting the local breast screening clinic. Defender Kieron Freeman and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale took time out of their training schedule to meet the breast screening team at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The Blades are working in partnership with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in urging
women aged 50-70 years old to take up their breast screening invitations every three years. Early detection of breast cancer through screening offers a better chance of successful treatment and full recovery. However, approximately 1 in 5 women are not taking up their invitations to be screened. During their visit, the players met the screening team staff who talked them through the breast screening process and the importance
of screening. This was an opportunity for the players to ask questions and find out why breast screening can save lives. Dave McCarthy, Operations Director at United, said: “The visit was a great opportunity for our players to meet with their local breast screening team to gain a good understanding about the process of breast screening and the importance of women attending their screening appointments. “During the campaign
month in October, we will do the best we can to remind fans and the local community of Sheffield to take up their invites. Players will take a proactive approach in reminding the women in their lives to attend screening.” Breast screening is offered every three years to all women aged 50 to 70 with some women being called up as early as 47 through a pilot scheme. Joanne Lay, Superintendent Radiographer at
U23s LOSE OUT TO ONE LUCKY GOAL
had efforts blocked. A header from defender Cummings was on target but Batty cleared off the line and then the best chance of the half also fell to United on 40 minutes. Annan wasted possession in his own half, allowing Brooks and Hussey to link up on the left and Chapman’s shot was heading for the top corner before a brilliant fingertip save from goalkeeper Mannion. The early stages of the second half failed produced many chances, although United looked
the more likely to score. Kelly, on as a substitute, and Brooks both went close. At the other end, Cummings provided a timely clearance to cut out Hinchliffe’s cross. However, Hull grabbed the lead midway through the half, fortuitously. ANNAN found space on the right and a heavy first touch encouraged Ramsdale off his line but the goalkeeper’s clearance cannoned off the Hull man and spun into the net from 18 yards. Chapman attempted to restore parity with a first time shot but
Mannion saved and on 75 minutes the Blades were indebted to Ramsdale, who, at full stretch, pushed an Edwards header onto a post. Hull managed the final 15 minutes well, limiting United’s forward forages and a last minute penalty claim, when substitute Smith fell, was ignored. There was a final moment of drama with the penultimate touch of the game. Substitute Burton headed home a Brown cross but was flagged off side.
Hull City netted a fortuitous second half goal and the Blades had a last minute header ruled out for offside at Bramall Lane on Monday evening. Hull created the first chance, Edwards shooting at Ramsdale; but the best opportunities of the first half fell to the Blades. Hallam had a shot saved and Chapman and Scougall
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “It is fantastic that the Blades are being so proactive in looking after the health and wellbeing of Sheffield women. “Breast screening is so important as early detection offers a better chance of successful treatment and full recovery,
therefore I strongly urge all women in Sheffield to join the fight and take up their breast screening invitations.” If you have missed your last mammogram appointment or need more information on breast screening, call Sheffield breast screening unit on 0114 271 1920.

CARLOS FULL OF PRIDE AFTER WIN Carlos Carvalhal praised his players after the Owls’ 1-0 win against QPR at Hillsborough. Wednesday dominated
the match and scored the only goal of the game when David Jones’ shot found the path of Gary Hooper, who tucked the ball home to give the
Owls all three points. Carvalhal said: “My players are unbelievable. “This week we’ve played three games against tough opponents
and this is very difficult. “But the players have worked hard and played well in all three games, and today the level was very good again.

goals, the strikers are there to try to score goals,” Carlos said. “But it’s not just a question of goals. Gary and Fernando and then after that, Fletcher all did fantastic teamwork against Queens Park Rangers. “It’s not just a question that they put the ball inside the net but it’s the way that they press.” Explaining further, he continued: “They block something specific about Queens Park Rangers when they try to build an attack. “They all did very well to block part of the game, it’s important they
damage the dynamic of the opponents. “They are not just there thinking that in the beginning of the game they are here just to score goals. No. “They think, ‘I’m here, I have a role to do, I must do this when I don’t have the ball, if that guy
goes there I must do this, or if he goes there I must do that and after, because of the dynamic they can score goals. “It’s why all the time I say I am very happy about them. Score or not, I am very happy with all the strikers.”
Derby this weekend and the Scot has told swfc.co.uk that the boys are buzzing after a successful period for the club. Having maintained position in the top six, the winger believes victory over QPR on Saturday provided the squad with another boost, explaining: “We’ve got people who
can create chances and score goals all over the team, we have got threats all over the place that’s why it’s so difficult for teams to play against us. “The boys are buzzing, we are happy with how things are going at the moment but there is a long way to go. “The main thing is there is a good feelgood factor
Carlos Carvalhal says he is more than happy with the contribution of all his strikers. Gary Hooper was on target last time out to seal victory over QPR but the Owls head coach says the responsibilities of his strikers goes far beyond scoring goals. “It’s important we score

“We deserved to win this game, and even though we could have scored more goals, the way we play is very good. “I think compared to this time last season we are playing at a better level.” Cameron Dawson made his first start for the Owls and was solid throughout the game, and Carvalhal praised
the young shot-stopper. “He had a good game. “It is similar to Joe Wildsmith last season who came in and played a lot of games at a young age, he is still a boy. “I have complete trust in all of our goalkeepers and sleep very easy no matter which one of them is starting the game.”
