SHEFFIELD TO MARK DAY OF REMEMBRANCE Sheffield will mark the National Day of Remembrance with a special service on Sunday, 13 November, at the city’s war memorial in Barker’s Pool. The service caps a year where the people of Sheffield have remembered the events of the First World War, which claimed the lives of 4,898 members of Sheffield City Battalion, and the 100th anniversary of the Battle Of The Somme. There has also been a moving ceremony for
Sheffield-born Major William Allen, who received the Victoria Cross for acts of gallantry and heroism during the First World War. At the remembrance service, The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox, will lead a procession from the City Hall at 10.50am. The ceremony will begin with the Exhortation read by Captain REJ Crothers of the 212 (Yorkshire) Field Hospital. The service will be conducted by
the Lord Mayor’s Chaplain. On parade will be ex-service personnel together with representatives of uniformed organisations in the city. The Deputy Lord Lieutenant, the Lord Mayor, the Master Cutler and representatives of the services and exservices, as well as other organisations on parade, will lay wreaths on the war memorial. Councillor Fox said: “Of course, the heroism of the people of Sheffield, the city’s
grandfathers and greatgrandfathers, in that terrible conflict 100 years ago have been on the city’s mind more than ever this year. “I’m proud to have played a leading role in commemorations both in Sheffield and France this year. “On Remembrance Sunday, we remember those currently engaged in all conflicts across the world and the great heroism shown by our armed services in serving their country.” Everyone is welcome to come and join the commemorations
in Barkers Pool on Sunday to show their respect for those who have served our country, past and present. People can support the Royal British Legion by buying a poppy. Poppy products are also available from the website at www. britishlegion.org.uk. At the ceremony, members of the public can lay floral tributes on the War Memorial, when the parade has marched past the memorial.

WHERE’S DASHER, DANCER, PRANCER AND BLITZEN? - THEY’RE AT LEOPOLD SQUARE! On Sunday 20th November Sheffield residents will get to experience Christmas in style as upmarket leisure destination Leopold Square transforms into the city’s very own mini winter wonderland ahead of the town’s official Christmas light switch on event. From 12pm visitors will be treated to wonderfully festive live music from some of The Square’s resident musicians who will be performing only the best selection of classic Christmas songs. To add to the magical atmosphere Leopold Square will also play
host to a number of beautiful real reindeers on the day, who will be on hand to help families get into the festive spirit. Visitors can get up close to the stunning animals and talk to their keepers about their habits and of course ‘their magical flying abilities’. Those wishing to simply relish in the enchanting ambience that The Square exudes during the Christmas months, can simply relax in one of its many restaurants and bars while snuggling up in a cosy blanket under the heaters outside enjoying a warming festive drink. Nick Yates, from Leopold Square, commented: “Leopold Square is extremely magical during the Christmas months with the fairy lights, blankets and festive cheer, and now with the addition of local choirs and reindeer, our visitors are sure to get into the festive spirit ahead of Sheffield’s Christmas light switch on.”

I saw a man and woman wrapped in a barcode. I said “are you two an item?” I was playing chess with my friend when he said “let’s make things interesting” So we stopped playing chess. Today I have invented a new game - Quiet tennis. It’s pretty much the same as normal tennis, but without the racket. I had a dream that I was a catalytic convertor last night. I woke up exhausted. People say my hobby of filling farm animals up with helium is morally reprehensible. But I say, whatever floats your goat. Jupiter forges one very constructive influence and one potentially positive angle, but one which is going to need some care. You’re going to find yourself more mindful of what you get as well as what you give to situations. When this is clear, you can express yourself with enthusiasm. Call for more...
With the Full Moon in your sign at the start of this week, you may find yourself feeling restless around relationships. However, there are some very constructive links that are going to help you to take the lead and be dynamic, and if you’re solo, a date towards or over the weekend can go well. Call for more...
The Full Moon in your opposite sign, cautions you to stay conscious of how people are reacting to some of your plans. But equally, you may decide to stick very purposely to those that mean a lot to you. You may find yourself having a conversation which is very dear to your heart. Call for more...
If you can blend precision with creativity, there’s a great deal for you to go for this week. But there may be a delicate balance between focusing on what enriches your soul and getting bogged down in the parts of your existence which are more duty-bound Gemini. Call for more astral advice...
Jupiter is forging a fantastic angle to Saturn, in your sign. There could be elements of your situation that are shaping up steadily and progressively, on the back of this. But then equally, stay tuned to any tendency you may have to be guided too much by material considerations. Call for more...
Expressing yourself in the way that you really want provides a real opportunity this week, but also may require some compromises too. If you can focus on more worldly situations, the angle between Mercury and Mars could see you make some very astute moves, Cancer. Call for more...
Restlessness could work its way into your situation this week. Inner strengths and qualities can come to the fore, and you could find yourself in demand. But there’s a thin line between being confident and dynamic, or seeming to want to be too much in the driving seat. Call for more...
This week’s lunation asks you to juggle home and external responsibilities. With a restless vibe also present, there may be something of the rebel in you around any constraints you feel that are imposed. Yet this can be a tremendous week creatively if you stay focused on what’s relevant. Call for more...
With Mars forging a brilliant angle to Mercury all this week, don’t underestimate the impact you can have on the people you connect with. Others can see you’re someone who is both dynamic, but also fair and inclusive. There may be one issue despite this, that will need some care however. Call for more...
A lot of exuberance floods into your situation this week, and you can find yourself having conversations that are both practical, but also optimistic. There could also be one person who is exciting you in a relationship context, and things could reach a new high. Call for more...
Words take on greater significance this week, especially conversations that somehow focus on your values or anything to do with finances. Conversations had behind-the-scenes can prove to be significant, but there is potential for growth and things to get stronger, Pisces. Call for more news...
The week begins with a Full Moon, which is asking you to work constructively on your shared finances and resources. Even if you feel you’re absolutely clear about what you want to do and how you want to do it, someone close may see it differently Aries. Call for more news and advice...

GOOD FOR THE BRAIN! REDUCING DEMENTIA RISK According to Public Health England just 2% of people in Britain can identify all the health and lifestyle factors that can increase risk of developing dementia. A recent survey, carried out by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), asked the public if they could identify any of the following risk factors: heavy drinking, smoking, high blood pressure, depression and diabetes as well as the protective factor of taking regular exercise and found just 2% of the public is able to identify all of them. Also, more than 1 in 4 people (27%) in Britain incorrectly believe that there is nothing anyone can do to reduce their risks of getting dementia. However there are things that we can all do to reduce our risk. George McNamara, Head of Policy at Alzheimer’s Society said: “There’s no better time than today to start making changes to your life and reduce your risk
of dementia. A good way to begin is with regular physical activity – like a brisk walk or dancing – along with a healthy balanced diet. Try and stop smoking, keep your blood pressure and cholesterol in check, and ensure you manage and get support for other health conditions. Keep your brain active too – research suggests people who do activities that stimulate the brain, like reading or puzzles, are less likely to develop dementia, compared with those who don’t.” Dr Charles Alessi, Senior Dementia Advisor at PHE, said: ”Dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing. What’s good for the heart is good for the brain and simple steps like giving up smoking, reducing alcohol intake, losing weight and taking regular exercise can reduce your risk of developing dementia in the future”. If you are looking for activities to exercise your brain or your body have a look at Sheffield 50+’s useful info on our website http://www.sheffield50plus.org.uk
All Our Brains Exhibition This new exhibition showcase is running from the 18 November – 23 December 2016. The event showcases new artwork exploring dementia issues and themes. All Our Brains project is part of the Catalyst Festival of Creativity and started in May this year, bringing together University staff, students, family carers, professional carers, nurses, dementia related organisations, artists and the public. The event aimed to inform and invite people to make artwork of any medium around dementia as a whole. The process since May has involved workshops, discussions, debates and collaborations about dementia that have informed artwork. The exhibition is free and there is an opening event on Friday 18th November from 6pm. The exhibition will be held at Sheffield Hallam University’s Cantor Building, 153 Arundel Street, Sheffield, S1 2NT.
DIABETES SCHEME GET YOUR NEW FLU JABS TODAY! Sheffield people at high risk of Type 2 diabetes will be invited to join a programme helping them avoid developing the illness as a new scheme launches this November. The ‘Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme’ will help those at risk to change their lifestyle, taking control of their health by supporting them to make changes to their diet, weight and the amount of exercise they do. Typical symptoms of Type 2 diabetes include feeling very thirsty, passing urine more often than usual, particularly at night, feeling very tired, weight loss and loss of muscle bulk. It’s very important for diabetes to be diagnosed as soon as possible as it will get progressively worse if left untreated. From November, Sheffield GPs will be referring patients who are at high risk of Type 2 diabetes on to the new programme. People who think they might be of high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, or those with symptoms should speak to their GP.
50+ NEEDS YOU! If you are interested in volunteering with us then please get in touch. We have a range of volunteer vacancies, some to give occasional help, others where you can commit to help for a set number of hours each week. Whatever you can, or can’t do there’s lots of different roles so we’d love to talk to you about how you might get involved. We are especially keen to recruit people in all areas of the City who can help us to distribute our quarterly magazine The Voice.
Are you over 65, pregnant, or have an existing heath condition? Then you are eligible for a free flu vaccination. People eligible for the free flu vaccine should be contacted by their GP to arrange their vaccination. For more information on health services, the flu vaccination and self-care advice visit the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk. Flu vaccine is the best protection we have against an unpredictable virus that can cause unpleasant illness in children and severe illness and death among at-risk groups, including older people, pregnant women and those with an underlying medical health condition. Studies have shown that the flu jab does

work and will help prevent you getting the flu. It won’t stop all flu viruses and the level of protection may vary between people, so it’s not a 100% guarantee that you’ll be flu-free, but if you do get flu after vaccination it’s likely to be milder and shorter-lived than it would otherwise have been. There is also evidence to suggest that the flu jab can reduce your risk of having a stroke. Over time, protection from the injected flu vaccine gradually decreases and flu strains often change. So new flu vaccines are produced each year which is why people advised to have the flu jab need it every year too.

WESTIE TAKES THE WHEEL TO LAUNCH CANCER CHARITY’S STAGECOACH SUPERTRAM PARTNERSHIP
The beloved mascot of a local cancer charity got into the driving seat this week to launch a new partnership with Sheffield’s Stagecoach Supertram. To mark the start of a collaboration between Weston Park Cancer Charity and Stagecoach Supertram, which will see the trams emblazoned with the cancer charity’s new branding and charity information taking pride of place on tram windows, Westie was delighted to get the new- look trams on the road. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Weston Park Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Stagecoach Supertram facilitates more than 10 million passenger
journeys every year. The service operates across three routes over eighteen miles with forty-eight stops. The tramway is served by six park and ride sites enabling easy parking for car users wishing to complete their journey by tram. Supertram Commerical Manager, Nigel Wragg also joined Westie and the cancer charity’s Director, Samantha Kennedy on the day to officially launch the new branding. Nigel said: “We are delighted to help support this important charity in this way. With Westie on board we hope to be able to raise the profile of the charity and help raise funds for this vital lifeline. With Weston Park Hospital only a short walk from one of our stops, it’s a natural fit for us to work together.” Trams across Sheffield will be embellished with Weston Park Cancer Charity branding and passengers on the tram will be able to read all about the charity’s work during their journey. Charity Director, Samantha Kennedy said, “We are delighted to have been given this fantastic oppor-
tunity by Stagecoach Supertram. Thousands of people use the tram everyday across Sheffield and we hope that passengers and passersby will enjoy our new brand as they travel in and out of the city.” “As a local charity, it’s important for us to continue working with local companies, especially within the transport sector, as many of the cancer patients at Weston Park Hospital rely on this service to get them to and from appointments.” “We’ll be working very closely with Supertram over the next year to develop initiatives which will engage with their passengers and make their journey just that little more exciting- watch this space!” The cancer charity needs to raise over £2 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep patients at the forefront of cancer treatment. For more information or to get involved and support the cancer charity’s vital work visit www.wphcancercharity.org. uk or call the charity office on 01142265370.

GOOD GARAGE SCHEME CHECK PROVIDES PEACE OF MIND With winter just around the corner, the Good Garage Scheme is encouraging motorists to get their cars professionally checked to ensure that they are safe and reliable in the cold and wet months ahead. The call comes after research by the UKwide workshop scheme revealed that two in five motorists (42%) put off getting their car serviced due to cost and that one in ten (11%) admit to only getting their vehicle serviced when it has its MOT test. As a result, drivers are putting themselves and others at risk of accidents, as well as potentially creating larger maintenance costs in the long run. In response, Good Garage Scheme workshops are offering a Winter Check to help drivers protect their vehicles and reduce the danger of accidents, costly repairs and breakdowns. TV motoring presenter and racing driver Tiff Needell is helping to get the message out about the Good Garage Scheme Winter Check, taking to the airwaves this autumn
to encourage motorists to have their cars checked for the winter weather. The 21-point Winter Check provides an expert assessment of a vehicle’s condition, examining essential areas including the condition and level of the coolant and engine oil, as well as the tyres, wiper blades, windscreen and lights. Tiff is also promoting Good Garage Scheme Service Plans, a fantastic tool available for motorists to budget for their next car service. Service Plans provide a simple, flexible way to budget for servicing and MOT requirements by spreading the cost throughout the year in interest-free monthly instalments, just like any other household bill. The plans are available to suit each driver’s needs, with a choice of plans to include interim and standard servicing, with or without an MOT. Visit www.GoodGarageScheme.com and enter your postcode to find your local Good Garage Scheme workshop offering the Winter Check and to find out more about the new Service Plans. Smartphone users can also download a free iPhone or Android app to help them locate a nearby Good Garage Scheme member anywhere in the UK.

‘MAD MAN WITH PRAM’ LAUNCHES AUTOBIOGRAPHY No doubt you’ve seen him. You’ve probably even read about him. But you’ve never heard his incredible, inspiring story told all in his own words – until now. John Burkhill – Sheffield’s famous ‘mad man with the pram’ – has penned his long-awaited autobiography. Published by RMC Media and funded by the people of Sheffield via a Crowd Funding website, it’s the fascinating tale of a truly unique life. ‘Distance No Object: Sheffield’s Man with the Pram’ is full of moving memories, insightful pictures from John’s own archive and a fair old dose of Yorkshire humour. The book costs £9.99 – with every penny donated towards John’s personal goal of raising £1 million for Macmillan. John, from Handsworth, aged 77 said, “It’s absolutely incredible to hold this book in my hands. I really hope people enjoy reading it. It’s something I’ve thought about doing for a long, long time. I’ve loved writing it.” He continues, “Most people know a little about why I do what I do – many think I’m completely barmy but there are things in this book which I’ve never really talked about publicly before which people often ask me about. This is my way of telling
everyone where it all began, the challenges I’ve faced and why I love the people of Sheffield so very much.” Having raised thousands of pounds for various causes over the years, on his retirement at the turn of the Millennium John decided to focus on one charity in particular, Macmillan. Since then, he has collected more than £350,000 for the charity – but the determined pensioner says he won’t stop until he’s reached £1 million. In his green Macmillan outfit, with wig to match, John looks quite the character. But his awe-inspiring achievements have won him personal recognition too. In 2012, he was voted by the people of Sheffield to be a torchbearer when the Olympic torch relay passed through the city. A year later, he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list. ‘Distance No Object: Sheffield’s Man with the Pram’ is available from Amazon priced at £9.99. ENGLISH TOURING OPERA HITS THE ROAD WITH RADICAL NEW PRODUCTION Sunday 16th October marked the opening performance of English Touring Opera’s new production of JS Bach’s St John Passion in Rochester, the first date on a ten-stop tour of the UK. The series of concerts, made possible by Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Fund, will see ETO in The Octagon Centre in Sheffield on the 13th November. This unique project involves translations by 12 writers from different faiths and backgrounds, 30 different choirs singing alongside professional soloists, and the added incentive that concertgoers can pay what they want, be it currency or otherwise. Former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, the UK’s longest-held hostage in Lebanon John Mccarthy, Bhuddist monk Maitreyabandhu, and stand up comedian and writer A.L. Kennedy are among the distinguished names who have written translations, bringing a range of new and contemporary colours thanks to their varied backgrounds.
For example, McCarthy’s passage contrasts captivity, prison, and shackles with liberty, love, freedom, dreams and mankind. Together, these are steps that cast a current political and cultural relevance to this historic masterpiece. These passages will be sung by more than thirty different choirs around the country in ten performances – in cathedrals, halls, and a Salvation Army Citadel. Each performance will have a chorus comprised of three choirs – for Sheffield these are Sheffield Cathedral Choir, University of Sheffield Chamber Choir and Sheffield Chorale. They will be singing alongside the professional singers, and English Touring Opera’s professional orchestra, the Old Street Band. The series of concerts, made possible by Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Fund, will visit Sheffield on Sunday 13 November. Concertgoers can either pre-book tickets or buy on the door, prices will be from £6 - £16. James Conway, English Touring
Opera’s General Director, says: “English Touring Opera plans a new kind of performance of the John Passion. Without prompting, the translators have all reference the rather scary climate of our times and the need to engage with each other. We are excited to be working with such a diversity of personalities, and are hoping they’ll give a modern resonance to the St John Passion, reflecting the society we live in. “This project is about a diverse group of artists, talking to a diverse audience. This is ETO at its grassroots: building bridges between communities as far and wide in the country as we possibly can. In its basic form, opera is not an elitist artform from the past but something that can reach everyday people and have relevance to today’s pressing world issues.”
The Octagon Centre, Sheffield - 13th Nov 2016 7:30 pm Tickets are available from englishtouringopera.org.uk priced at £14.

for Best Jazz Act the enduring success of Incognito is one of the great stories of UK music during the last four decades. As Jocelyn Brown said, ‘We’re in the business of music, not the music business.’ With their 17th studio album, “In Search of Better Days” (released in June 2016) the fresh, uncompromising, soulful songs and instrumentals continue to shine through . . . From the driving bass of featured guest Stuart Zender on the opening track, this album ups the ante! Imaani, Vanessa Haynes, Tony Momrelle, Katie Leone, Vula Malinga by Anthony Ward — the UK’s finest and most soulful voices hit you For well over 30 years Jean-Paul 'Bluey' Maunick relentlessly one after the other with songs that remain with you from the first hearing. And as if that was not and Incognito have been connecting with enough, in comes American chanteuse extraordinaire audiences, playing a positive blend of jazz, funk and soul. The band is as creative and full of fire as - Maysa AKA “the voice of Incognito”, to seal the it was at its conception in 1979. A rare feat in these deal in making this one of their best albums! ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I went to the club Annual General Meeting last night, and as I expected, it was poorly attended. I’m not an official, I’m not on the committee, I went along purely as a club member taking an interest in the plans for 2017, and I was dismayed by the apathy shown by a majority of members. Before you jump down my throat, I know that everyone has commitments, I was undecided myself whether to drive a twenty mile round trip, but it is important. If you don’t go to the AGM, you don’t have a say, so to be fair, you can’t really moan when things don’t go your way… I think it’s reasonable to say it’s the same with most clubs; a small core of members ‘carry’ the club, and most of the other members are happy to pay the ticket fee, turn up, and fish; nothing wrong with that. However, running an angling club is a tough task, and what goes on behind the scenes, the amount of time involved, means that not everyone can get involved, and those that do, are often pilloried by those who don’t! It’s a thankless job… and I know, I’ve been there and done it. Never again… I was co-opted onto the committee of an unnamed club, by a particularly underhanded chap with an agenda against other committee members. It ended badly, with no winners, only losers, and is a fortunately rare example of the kind of stalwarts who usually make up the controlling board, but it put me off angling club committee work for life! As for the rest, for all the organising, effort, time and work you put in, on all committees, across the country, I salute you, and I have to thank you too, for providing some smashing fishing… I’ve caught some fish this week. Not big ones, but they were welcome after a run of poor sessions where in truth, I’ve been struggling. I suffered yet another blank early in the week, when I opted to chase toothy critters on a Stoke park lake, but managed only a solitary pick up, which turned out to be the resident cormorant! Luckily, it didn’t take the bait down (can you imagine that? A bird of prey hooked on a double treble trace rig? No thanks!) and left only an indentation in the herring which remained untouched by anything all day… Later in the week, I joined Andy on the banks of a Staffordshire club water, where all season, we have absolutely battered the place, sometimes catching more than twenty double figure carp in a single day visit! I’d readied a few kilos of particle baits, glugged them in garlic oil, and was quite prepared to use the lot if the carp were feeding as they usually do. I arrived later than Andy, and was surprised to find that in the hour he had been there, he hadn’t caught yet, especially as his spot was pre-baited (I found out later!) There was a bitterly cold wind scudding across the lake, a previous frost had cooled the waters, and the levels had dropped as water was siphoned off to balance a nearby lake. Not ideal conditions, but this is a ‘banker’ water, so I was still confident of some fish.

Carp to 30lb - Bream - Ide Roach - Tench - Crucian NEAR DONCASTER • DN9 3DZ
CALL JAMIE 07769 902731
I started off by shovelling a few scoops of stinky particle into the margins, fully expecting carp to be on the bait before I’d tackled up as is usual. The water here is clear enough to see fish as they approach the bait, but the water remained fish free as I threaded the line through the rod rings, and put on an inline lead and short nylon hooklink. Simple tactics work here, so no complicated rigs, just a sharp hook, a couple of grains of corn, and you are pretty much guaranteed some action. I fish here with a Sonik S3 1.5LB test curve rod, twinned with a 6000 series reel which gives me a fun combination to tame decent sized carp, but is also soft enough to reduce the number of lost fish. Sounds like a product plug doesn’t it? It is, but based on good comparison; Andy complained of losing fish whilst using a heavier rod, whilst my loss rate remained comparatively low, so Andy now uses the same Sonik rod, and is happy to confirm that it has done much to put more fish on the bank. Lost fish are now a rare occurrence; the trick is to get them on the hook in the first place! The rig I use is just lowered in at the rod tip, the line left slack to lay on the bottom, and the fish normally oblige by screaming off into open water. Today, however, things were different, and neither of us could get any indications that fish were in the area. It was obvious that colder weather had pushed the fish further out, but where? It’s a big lake, with some considerable depth, so finding them was going to be tricky. I set up another rod, an S4 feeder rod, and put a small method feeder and single corn hook bait out, giving fifteen minutes or so every cast to try and find fish but got no response. A straight bomb rig, again with corn and then pellet on the hook also resulted in no indications, and we were both perplexed indeed… this is a guaranteed runs water! After a few fruitless hours, it was time to put all my eggs in one basket, put a bait on the carpet of particles and wait. A change of plan saw me use my ‘jammy doughnut’ rig, coating my lead in Mainline Baits bait syrup, then moulding a ball of rock hard groundbait around it, before hiding the hookbait within the bait ball. It was deposited at the edge of the baited area, and the line tightened before clipping on the bobbin. I’d tested the groundbait in the margins, and it was taking at least twenty minutes to break down, so didn’t expect any instant results. Just a few minutes later though, the bobbin twitched a few times before settling; could there now be fish in the swim? Andy then struck into a smashing mirror of just over 15lb, leaving the score at 1-0. As time passed, I wasn’t confident that any more fish would be forthcoming, when bang! The bobbin shot up towards the alarm, and I hooked into a small common… a fish at last! A very welcome fish in bitterly cold conditions, the flanks of the fish were icy cold to touch, an indicator of just how much water temperatures had fallen in recent days; 1-1! Over the course of the next hour, I landed a further three carp into double figures, lost one when the hook caught the net, and netted a smashing bonus barbel which looked much bigger than its weight of just over 5lb. Andy also had another decent carp, leaving the score at seven fish for the day… a real change from the normal 30-40 we normally share! All of my fish fell to the same ‘Jammy doughnut’ rig, the addition of some liquid flavour which slowly seeped through the groundbait meant that I had plenty of attraction right next to the hook bait for the maximum amount of time; a vital requirement when fishing is hard! I really think it made the difference on the day, during which we seemed to have only a couple of hours in which the fish were feeding, and it’s a tactic to file away in the locker for next time when things don’t go to plan! Every little helps…
by Michael Clarke
The weather was noticeably cooler on the weekend, but the County Senior League Cup 3rd Round provided a few shocks to warm up Saturday afternoon. League Cup 3rd Round We can start at no other place than Norton Playing Fields this week, where Sheffield Medics of Division Two South were hosting defending Premier Division champions Frecheville. The Medics shocked their Premier Division opposition 4-2 to book their place in the Quarter-Finals in their inaugural season in the County Senior League. That was not the end of the shocks either, as Euroglaze FC of Division Two North beat last years’ finalists Grimethorpe Sports 4-1 at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium. A single goal from Tom Howell gave Houghton Main a 1-0 win over Dodworth Miners Welfare in the derby at Dodworth Miners Welfare Ground. Athersley Recreation Reserves had a tricky tie against Division Two South leaders Kiveton Park. The Premier Division outfit came out on top though, with a 3-1 victory. Division One leaders Wickersley were 6-4 winners against Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 at Wickersley School. Wickersley were 4-3 winners over Ecclesfield two weeks ago. AFC Penistone Church came out on top in the all Premier Division tie against Wombwell Main. It finished 2-1 in Penistone’s favour at Wombwell Main Cricket Club. Premier Division leaders Swallownest FC booked their place in the Quarter-Finals with no problem, as they beat Caribbean Sports 4-0 at the Caribbean Sports Club. Danny Camm scored twice to inspire Brinsworth Whitehill to a 4-3 away win over Caribbean Sports Reserves. Martin Jones and Greg Mason were also on target for Brinsworth. Premier Division Swinton Athletic were 4-0 winners over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves at Mexborough Athletic Ground, thanks to goals from Daz Walker (2) and Jake Ford (2). The win is Swinton’s fifth in six games, with backto-back clean-sheets to boot. Alex Rippon scored four times as Handsworth Parramore Reserves beat Denaby United at Balby Carr Community Academy. Ryan

Simmonite and Ben Rooth were also on target for Handsworth, who climb into fifth position in the table. Division One AFC Dronfield strengthened their third place in the table, as they held Sheffield Bankers to a 3-3 draw at Hillsborough Park Arena. Oughtibridge sit just a point further back after 1-0 away win over High Green Villa. Davy FC were also 1-0 winners. They beat bottom side Millmoor Juniors Reserves at Grange Park. Division Two North There was just one game in Division Two North. Leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels Development Squad extended their lead at the summit to six points, after a 2-1 away win over Wombwell Main Development Squad.
Division Two South With league leaders Kiveton Park in cup action, Swinton Athletic Reserves had the chance to cut their lead to two points. They took that chance, as a goal from Jordan Beardsley gave them a 1-0 home win over Millmoor Juniors Development Squad. Sheffield Bankers Reserves grabbed their first win of the season, with a 2-1 victory over mid-table Sheffield Lane Top at the Civil Service Ground. Renishaw Rangers claimed just one point from four matches in October, but Daylight Saving Time seem to be kinder to them, as they beat AFC Dronfield Reserves 1-0 at Gosforth Playing Fields, with a goal from Aidan McTighe. New Bohemians were also 1-0 away winners, as a sole Ryan Becks strike gave them all three points against Davy FC Reserves. JACKETT CALLS FOR DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT Rotherham United boss Kenny Jackett says his side must improve in the defensive third if they are to lift themselves away from the foot of the Sky Bet Championship table. Following the defeat to Preston North End at AESSEAL New York Stadium, the Millers’ manager was keen to emphasise that his team must eradicate errors at the back in order to get the results they are looking for. “The goals against column, staying in the game and making sure we have some type of defensive setup to keep it close - that has been our problem all season. It was a problem today,” Jackett explained. “The ability to block crosses, to be able get tight to key players was something that we talked about. Key moments got them control of the game, and from there they could flood the midfield and then break. “I felt that Preston started well and got control of the game with two early goals. They had a clear
cut chance before that with Robinson. Then as we put pressure on them, particularly at the start of the second period going towards our own fans, we got a goal back. They had some quality on the break though and that ultimately took the game away from us. Jackett reserved praise for substitute Peter Odemwingie who provided the ammunition for Richard Wood’s first goal for the club and admits there were positive signs in the latter stages of the game against the Lilywhites. “He has come on twice now and done very well. He is getting more minutes as he goes, the international break will help him in terms of getting match fitness. He certainly contributed in the second period,” he added. “It was a change of shape to see if we could get a little tighter to them. I thought that Odemwingie linked with Ward pretty well, they gave us a threat and even Brown in the latter stages gave us a front three that can hopefully be potent for us.
There are options in terms of going that way and we have used them in the last three games. “The goals against column is a tough one to take at the moment and we have to do something about it because it knocks all the confidence out of us when we concede sloppy goals.” The Millers set up a nervy finale in Rotherham when stand-in skipper Wood notched his first goal for the club, but were pegged back as Marnick Vermijl deal them a late blow. However, Jackett expressed that he was pleased to see his centre half on the scoresheet, while praising his contribution on Saturday afternoon. “He has done very well. I am pleased with him again today, he deservedly got his goal and at the other end as well he has a lot of experience and I think we do need to build around him and back him up,” he continued. “(The third goal) was a deflator for the stadium when we had some momentum going and looked like we could get back into the game.”
MILLERS MARK MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY FOR SPORT REMEMBERS FORMER ROVERS Rotherham United marked their final home game prior to Remembrance Sunday with a minute’s silence prior to kick off, but paid special tribute ahead of the game with Preston North End to mark a significant milestone. This year is a special year as it is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, which ran from 01 July – 18 November 1916 - one of the most difficult and costly battles of the First World War. It has come to represent the waste, the futility, and the tragedy of the war itself, and it was really felt at community level – particularly amongst

sports clubs, teams and individuals. To aid the war effort, virtually all professional sport was suspended during the Battle of the Somme with footballers, athletes and sportspeople at all levels volunteering to enlist – sometimes en masse including football teams and their supporters. When these battalions suffered losses, as they did mostly at the Somme, the impact was felt greatly within these clubs and communities. The Royal British Legion has launched Sport Remembers the Somme to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, telling the stories of the sportspeople who sacrificed their lives for their country including various footballers, rugby players, cricketers, Olympians, boxers and golfers. The 100 stories include moving, powerful accounts of players who lost their lives at the Somme including Allen Foster, a swashbuckling striker who began his football career with Rotherham Town, followed by two years with Bristol City, before transferring to Reading FC in August 1911. Foster fought in France with the 1st Football Battalion, the 17th Middlesex, and he was never to come home.
Just over a month into the Somme, he died in the bloody fighting at Guillemont. The charity is now calling on the public to join in the commemoration of the service and sacrifice made by the nation’s sportspeople during the Battle of the Somme by holding their own events at community level. Rotherham United’s current first team squad and staff have also showed their support this week, with the club releasing images on social media and in last week’s matchday programme. FERGUSON RUES MISSED FA CUP CHANCE Rovers manager Darren Ferguson talks about the FA Cup first round exit to League One Oldham at Boundary Park. Darren Ferguson rued his side’s missed chance to pull off a minor upset against League One Oldham Athletic on Saturday. Despite a late rally, Rovers couldn’t force a first round replay against the higher ranked Latics and the wait to have another stab at the FA Cup could be a long one for the Scot. He said: “We’re out of the Cup. As I just said to the players, we have to wait twelve months now which is a long time. “Wait until you see the second round draw, wait until you see who gets Manchester United and Arsenal and Liverpool in the third round and we’re not in it and it was a game I really wanted to win and I felt with the team I picked should have won if we’d done the right things

but we can’t keep conceding goals the way we are, it’s not good enough. “We do more work than most in terms of both sides of the pitch, we’re just conceding really sloppy goals. To concede 8 in three games is not good enough.” Rovers scored for the 19th successive game courtesy of the impressive Liam Mandeville but that is not where their deficiencies lie according to Ferguson. He said: “I’m a manager that does want to entertain and score goals but I’m a manager that doesn’t want to concede them. I’m not one for winning 6-4 – if we have to then yes – but winning the game is the main thing. We need more clean sheets, we’re making really poor decisions on the pitch and getting punished and that area of our game isn’t good enough at the moment.

“I thought there was some positives; Mandeville and (Alfie) Beestin were very good and I was pleased with those two. “Really pleased for Liam because he had a bit to answer and he knew that. He was more aggressive and got more involved, got the penalty himself and took it. I thought Beestin was very good and we’re going to need them.”
CAPTAIN RUSS WILCOX HAS RETURNED TO THE CLUB AS HEAD OF RECRUITMENT Russ has a wealth of experience in and knowledge of the game. He had a 16 year playing career followed by 14 years as an assistant Manager in all four divisions and then Manager at Scunthorpe United and York City. Along the way he achieved five promotions across these three roles. For the past 12 months his focus has been on recruitment. Last season he worked at Preston North End on first team recruitment, and this season he has worked for Premier League side Southampton, targeting players from youth to senior professional. Russ therefore also brings an array of contacts to the role and is excited to be back where it all started for him as a young boy. He said: “It’s great to be back at the club for a third time. I made one appearance as a 17-yearold under Billy Bremner then returned at 29 to captain the club for two years at Belle Vue. “Things have changed significantly since then. The infrastructure at the club is first class. Everything is in place for the club to be successful.” Russ has been tasked with overseeing recruitment at all levels, and is pleased to work with a manager in Darren Ferguson who has a reputation for giving young players a chance. He added: “The gaffer is building the club from top to bottom. If he feels the young players are ready he’s not afraid to play them. There seems a good balance of young and experienced players in the group. Hopefully we can make one or two quality additions in January and build up the recruitment side in the Academy as well. It’s a role that really excites me. “I’ve been very impressed with the gaffer and his staff. They are very professional people with a strong work ethic that rubs off on the players. I’m sure I can add value to help Darren and the club achieve its goals.”

WILDER’S ORIENT VERDICT 2016/17 “It was a good day for everybody, it doesn’t get much better than winning 6-0 at Bramall Lane.” That was Chris Wilder’s initial comment in the aftermath of Sunday’s resounding victory over Leyton Orient in the first round of the Emirates FA Cup. Chris Basham opened the scoring, with Stefan Scougall and Kieron Freeman adding their names to the scoresheet before the break. But the second-half belonged to Middlesbrough loanee Harry Chapman, who helped himself to a first professional hat-trick
against the League Two strugglers. But despite the O’s lowly position in the division below, Wilder was keen to praise the professionalism of his side, he remarked: “The attitude and work ethic of the players was outstanding and that allows us to show our ability, there is plenty within the squad and we’ve seen it again. “People will talk about the position of the opposition, but we can only beat what’s in front of us and we did that clinically and comprehensively. “Nothing is given to you on a plate, it’s a Sunday afternoon,
the crowd is 6,000 instead of 20,000, but we entertained a healthy turnout when sometimes these games can turn into real struggles. “Our tempo and desire to be successful made it the formality everyone thought it would be on paper.” The Blades boss made three enforced changes to face Orient, with Simon Moore and Ethan Ebanks-Landell missing in addition to Billy Sharp, who was amongst the substitutes despite being ill during the week. And Wilder outlined the reasoning behind his team selection,
commenting: “Bill has been in bed most of the week but still put his hand up to be on the bench. It was a week too soon for Leon (Clarke) and Matt (Done), whilst we are still being
careful with Caolan (Lavery). “That meant we didn’t start with a recognised striker out there, but we changed the way we play slightly, adapted well and went on to score six good
goals. Our movement was excellent. “We will always work hard and be committed and that allows you to have a base to be a dominate force offensively.”
U18S LOSE OUT IN STEEL CITY DERBY United U18s saw their seven-match unbeaten run in the Professional Development League ended at Shirecliffe on Saturday. George Hirst, son of former Owls favourite David, netted a brace, which was enough to see all three points head back to S6. United started best, with Mallon a constant threat to the visitors and from his excellent delivery, Hallam just failed to convert. But the home side were punished for not
making their early dominance count as Wednesday took the lead in the 33rd minute, HIRST intercepted a pass before racing clear and cooling slotting past the advancing Perryman. Before the break, Gilmour saw a goal bound effort blocked, before United had strong appeals for a penalty waved away by the referee after Charlesworth appeared to be upended as he entered the box. The second-half
followed a similar pattern to the first, but again, despite enjoying plenty of the ball United struggled to find a spark to break down the visitors’ backline. Greaves and Parkhouse were introduced from the bench, although it was Hallam and Mallon who looked the most likely to fashion an equaliser. But, the Owls put the game to bed in the 80th minute as HIRST got a decisive second, side footing home with his right foot.
YOUNG BLADES TRIO RECEIVE ENGLAND CALL WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Aaron Ramsdale, Louis Reed and Harry Chapman have all been called up to their respective England youth sides. Ramsdale will join
up with the England Under-19’s, topping a memorable few days for the young stopper that included making his debut in the FA Cup against
Leyton Orient. Reed and Chapman have received a call from the slightly more senior Under-20 group. The pair will jet off to South Korea to compete in the Continental Cup. On the call up’s for Reed
and Chapman, Blades boss Chris Wilder said: “For them boys to get into their relative age groups, they deserve a lot of praise.” The call-ups provide proof of a job well done by Travis Binnion and the staff at the SteelPhalt Academy. Although the club cannot take too much credit for the call up off on-loan attacker Chapman, a chance to play first team football at Sheffield United has given the youngster a platform to impress. However, what will worry some Blade fans is the lack of game time given to Reed and Ramsdale. Reed, a mainstay in Nigel Adkins’ side, has struggled to break
into the United XI this season. Reed was named on the bench for the FA Cup game against Orient, but Wilder preferred to introduce Ben Whitemen and David Brooks off the bench instead. Ramsdale, and former starter George Long, don’t
look like ousting the in-form Simon Moore. Loan moves might occur for Long, Ramsdale and Reed, although it appears Wilder is keeping the trio in the wings should potential injuries mount up for the Blades.

LEES FOCUSED ON OWLS RESPONSE Tom Lees says the Owls will work hard during the international break to put right the wrongs from Saturday’s defeat to Ipswich. Wednesday will travel to Fulham in the first game back after the two-week gap on 19 November. Both sides are level on 24 points, just two
outside of the top six but in the meantime it’s back to work for Wednesday at Middlewood Road and Lees said: “It’s the international break now, we’ll get on the training pitch, we’ve got two weeks to improve and obviously we’ve got a very big game now when we get back against Fulham.
“When you lose, you just want your next game to come around as quickly as possible but we’ll have to wait now which isn’t ideal.” The Owls completed an impressive treble over the Cottagers last season, home and away in the Championship and once in the FA Cup. Looking for a positive
result this time around, Lees continued: “The only way we can respond to the disappointment on Saturday is by getting back out on the pitch. “You’ve got two choices; let it affect you or come out and fight and turn it around. That’s what we have to do.”
solid recently despite the last two results that haven’t gone our way. “There’s a lot of good things to build from, we need to not lose confidence, get together as a team and focus on the good habits that see you through. “We were on top in the game before they scored their second, but no team is going to lie down for you. “We’ve got a good team spirit and we’ll come together over the next two weeks and work hard and be full of energy ready for the next game.”

COME BACK STRONGER David Jones acknowledged the disappointment of last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich at Hillsborough but believes the team spirit within the camp will help the Owls bounce back. The final international break of the year is now in place and Jones insists the squad will come back stronger. The midfielder said: “It was disappointing to lose a game that we feel we should be getting a better result in. “As disappointing as this was, though, we can’t focus on this game in isolation, we’ve been
