A full programme of entertainment will begin from 2pm, before the big switch itself is flicked at 5.30pm in the Peace Gardens by a soon-to-berevealed famous face. White and the Seven Dwarves” at the Lyceum Theatre will be entertaining crowds around the city centre throughout the afternoon. Families can also take a ride on a fire engine and play on the National Emergency Services Museum’s display of emergency vehicles as the museum goes “on tour” for the day. This year’s Christmas market will open on Wednesday 16 November, housed in traditional wooden cabins along Fargate.
As well as independent traders from across the UK and Europe selling a variety of gifts, jewellery, crafts and fresh produce, there will be refreshment stalls selling hot food and drinks, including the annual Sleigh Bar. The market runs from 10am to 6pm daily throughout November. In December, the market will also be open until 8pm each Wednesday. For the first time in Sheffield, THOR’s Viking Tipi Bar is taking up home in the Peace Gardens for the festive
period. Arriving on Thursday 24 November, THOR’S Tipi Bar, which plays on Yorkshire’s Viking heritage will be festooned with lighting and decked out with wooden tables and benches, cosy furs and a fire pit, plus an outdoor heated area. Serving local draft ales, mulled wine and hot cider, plus a hot chocolate station where kids, big and small, can choose a topping for their homemade chocolate treat and a tempting winter barbeque. Those visiting the city
centre on the three Saturdays before Christmas can take advantage of the festive free parking offer. From 2pm on Saturday 10, 17 and 24 December people can park for free in all Sheffield City Council on and off street parking spaces in the city centre and in the permit parking zones. People can keep up to date with all things Christmas in Sheffield through the Sheffield Events www.facebook. com/SheffEvents and Sheffield City Centre www.facebook.com/ sheffieldcitycentre Facebook pages, watch this space!

SHEFFIELD CHASE THE PUD IS BACK FOR CHRISTMAS 2016 Join the fight against heart disease by dressing up as Santa and chasing a Christmas pudding! The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is calling on everyone in Sheffield to get in the Christmas spirit by signing up to Chase the Pud to help raise money for life saving research. The annual festive fundraiser is the perfect way to get friends and family together for a 1 mile run, jog or walk around Sheffield City Centre on Sunday 11 December. Last year’s event saw over 300 people don Santa costumes and chase a Christmas pudding around Sheffield, raising an incredible £10,000 in the fight against heart disease. The Hunt family is one of hundreds of families that have taken part in the event previously and are calling on local residents to sign up for the event. Daughter Maddy, now 13, had open heart surgery when she was just four years old and faces further surgery on the artery in her neck. Mum Lisa said: “We did the event as a family and the girls loved it. It’s so important to continue funding research breakthroughs so that children like Maddy,
born with congenital heart conditions, will be able to live a good life.” There are around 67,950 people living in Sheffield with heart and circulatory disease. The money raised from Chase the Pud will help fund ground-breaking research to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat these devastating conditions. Lauren Mallinson, BHF Fundraising Manager for Sheffield, said: “When you think of Christmas pudding, you probably don’t think about running after one, but Chase the Pud is a great way to work up an appetite for the festive period! It’s always a really fun event to get people warmed up for the Christmas season whilst raising money to help us fund even more ground-breaking research into heart and circulatory disease.” Chase the Pud is suitable for all ages and the route is accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs and can be finished at the participant’s own pace. Tickets for Sheffield Chase the Pud are available now and are £10 for adults, which includes a Santa suit and free for children under 14. Children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite Christmas character. To find out more and to buy tickets, please visit www. bhf.org.uk/chasethepud call 0300 330 3322 or email frsupport@bhf.org.uk

STAY WARM & WELL THIS WINTER! After a lovely autumn, winter has arrived with the first snows and frosts! Public health experts are telling the over 65s and people with health problems to keep warm by eating hot meals and keeping active. NHS England and Public Health England have launched a campaign to help the vulnerable stay well and out of A&E. Tips include setting a thermostat to no lower than 18C, wrapping up warm and consuming hot meals and drinks. There were 43,900 excess winter deaths in England and Wales in 2014/15, the Office for National Statistics says.”Food is a vital source of energy, which keeps your body warm. Try to make sure that you have hot meals and drinks regularly throughout the day and keep active in the home if you can.” How the cold can affect your health The cold and damp weather – ice, snow and cold winds – can be bad for your health, especially if you’re aged 65 or older. It can make you more more vulnerable to winter illnesses, such as
coughs and colds, which could become very serious. It also increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke. However, there are things you can do. What you can do Get expert advice Always seek advice from your pharmacist at the first sign of a cough or a cold, before it gets more serious. Buy over-the-counter medicines Many over-the-counter medicines (including paracetamol and ibuprofen) are available to relieve symptoms of common winter ailments such as colds, sore throat, cough, sinusitis or painful middle ear infection (earache). Keep yourself warm Keeping warm, both inside and outdoors, over the winter months can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression. Wear several layers of light clothes, as these trap warm air better than one bulky
16/11/2016
layer. Heat your home to at least 18C (65F) Stay active – try not to sit still for more than an hour or so Keep out the cold at night Keep your bedroom window closed on winter nights. Breathing cold air can be bad for your health as it increases the risk of chest infections. Get the right help Make sure you’re receiving all the help you are entitled to. Learn how to make your home more energy efficient and take advantage of financial schemes to keep up with energy bills. See Keep Warm, Keep Well for details. You can also check your heating and cooking appliances are safe and operating properly by contacting a Gas Safe registered engineer. Cold weather benefits You may also be able to claim financial and practical help with heating your home. Grants available include the Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payment of between £100 and £300 tax-free and is available to help you pay your heating bills if you were born on or before January 5th 1953.
PENSION WISE SHEFF DIRECTORY PHONE BOXES Are you confused about pensions? Did you know that there is a free government advice service to help you through the pension maze? Phone Pension Wise on 0800 138 3944 to book a free chat with a Pension Wise guidance specialist. The conversation will take around 45 to 60 minutes and afterwards you’ll get a written summary of what was discussed. They will talk about the different ways you can take your pension money, explain how each pension option is taxed and give you next steps to take. The service is available for anyone aged 50 or over who has a defined contribution pension. This is a pension based on how much you and possibly your employer paid into your pot. It’s not a final salary pension. Pension Wise guidance specialists are impartial. They don’t recommend any products or companies and won’t tell you how to invest your money.

BT and the Council have consulted on BT’s proposal to remove many payphones across Sheffield. Based on consultation comments, usage and any knowledge of social need, the Council are now publishing their First Notification – this is their draft decision on whether they object or consent to the removal of the payphone equipment. After considering the comments from this consultation, Sheffield City Council will send their Final Decision to the Secretary of State and BT. The Council will also pass on contact details of anyone wishing to adopt any of the red ‘heritage’ phone box. So if you have an idea for a red phone box get in touch. It’s simple to do and costs just £1. www:business.bt.com/phone-services/ payphone-services/adopt-a-kiosk/ Any comments on this draft decision should be sent to Forward & Area Planning Team, Sheffield City Council, Howden House, 1 Union Street, Sheffield, S1 2SH; or to sheffieldplan@sheffield. gov.uk). The deadline is 5th December at midnight.

CANCER CHARITY KICKS OFF FESTIVE FUNDRAISING APPEAL WITH HELP OF FORMER PATIENT AND HER MIRACLE CHILDREN The dedicated charity for the region’s specialist cancer centre is once again appealing to local people to make a special Christmas donation to improve the future of cancer care across the region. Now in its fourth year the Weston Park Cancer Charity ‘Christmas Star Appeal’ is a firm favourite with charity supporters and sees members of the pubic make a donation to fund the vital work of the charity in return for a special star to hang on their own Christmas tree at home. Weston Park Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for Weston Park Hospital and exists to support the worldclass cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. This year’s appeal, which is again being generously sponsored by Napoleons Casino, is being supported by former patient Jenna McGregor (31) from Mansfield. When Jenna was just 23 years old she was diagnosed with Gestational Trophoblastic Disease, a cancer which grows inside the uterus. In total shock, Jenna was put under the care of Weston Park Hospital, which is one of only two specialist centres in England to treat this rare disease. Following nine months of care and treatment Jenna recovered well, however
she was told the devastating news that it was unlikely she would be able to have children of her own in the future. Jenna said “Having cancer at such a young age and hearing the news that as a result of my illness I might not be able to have children was incredibly difficult to deal with. It was a hard time in my life but knowing I was being cared for by such a specialist hospital and such dedicated staff really did help”. Now eight years on from her diagnosis, Jenna has defied the odds and has two children, Rae aged 5 and Reed age 4. Preparing for Christmas with her family and looking forward to a fun- filled festive season, Jenna knows how lucky she is and is determined to support Weston Park Cancer Charity so she can help other cancer patients in the future fulfil their dreams. Last year’s Christmas Star Appeal raised nearly £30,000 and was supported by over 900 people and organisations across the Sheffield City region. Weston Park Cancer Charity relies on the funds raised by the appeal to invest in ground- breaking cancer research and improve the care and support services available to local cancer patients. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over
South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. The charity needs to raise over £2 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep patients at the forefront of cancer treatment. In recognition of all donations received in support of The Christmas Star Appeal, the cancer charity will be sending out silver star decorations for people to hang on their Christmas Tree at home, a small thank you from the charity and a reminder over the busy festive season of the positive difference they have chosen to make by generously donating to the appeal. The charity hope that come Christmas Day hundreds of people will have one of these special stars proudly hanging on their tree. Charity Fundraising Manager, Helen Gentle said, “Thanks to the great strides that have been made in cancer care and treatment, in large part funded by charitable donations, there will be many families, like Jenna’s who will be preparing to spend a happy Christmas together. Sadly we also know that this Christmas there will be empty chairs at some dinner tables across our region and families who will be missing a loved one”
“We hope that members of the public will get behind our appeal as they have in the past so we can raise funds to create a better life for cancer patients and keep more families together for longer” Donations to the appeal can be made

I thought bassist Nibbs Carter who’s now been with the lads over twenty five years played the show of his life, with now recovered Nigel Glockler hitting the tubs with skill and precision. SUPPORT NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK AND MAKE THE PLEDGE Families, community groups, employers and schools are being urged to get involved in Road Safety Week 2016 (21 to 27 November), the UK’s biggest road safety event, to help make our communities safer for everyone. The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is supporting the annual event which is co-ordinated by the charity Brake, by calling on all road users to make the Brake pledge and show their commitment to saving lives and keeping our roads safer. Road users are being urged to take action, make a difference and pledge to do six simple things to save lives this road safety week: • Slow – stay under the speed limit and drive to the conditions; • Sober – don’t drink and drive; • Secure – use your seat belt for every journey; • Silent – don’t use your mobile phone whilst driving; • Sharp – drivers get your eyes tested every two years and don’t drive tired; • Sustainable – try to minimise the amount you drive; walk, cycle or use public transport instead of the car. Why not come along and meet the team? If you have any questions about road safety there will be members of the local authority road safety teams, Police and Fire Service there to provide an answer. Joanne Wehrle, Safer Roads Education Manager said: “The Safer Roads Partnership is pleased to once again support Brake’s National Road Safety Week. We are calling on all road users to play their part and help make South Yorkshire roads safer, not just during this campaign but throughout the year. Drivers are urged to make the pledge and commit to driving within the speed limit, wearing their seat belt for every journey, not using a mobile phone at the wheel and not drink or drug driving. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycle riders are encouraged to wear bright and reflective clothing or accessories, especially at this time of year, to be more easily seen by other road users.”

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve joined a new club this week. I know it’s very late in the year, and there are only a few weeks left on the ticket until it’s due for renewal, but sometimes, you just must go where the fish are, and I’d heard rumours of some good perch fishing! I fancied trying a nearby lake for the abundant (apparently!) pike, so dropped in early in the morning and set up a couple of deadbaits; one legered, the other floatfished so I could cover more water. It rained. Lots. All day. It was a thoroughly unpleasant days fishing, not helped by a move mid-session, which entailed shifting my kit from one muddy peg to another, still fishless, between flurries of snow and rain. I had one run all day. The kind of run where the float bobs a couple of times to give fair warning first… the kind of run where the float hurtles across the swim before submerging (am I the only one who thinks of the yellow barrels in ‘Jaws’ when that happens?) and the kind of run where you wind down to the fish, feel it, then strike into fresh air! That kind of run… The only thing I caught all day long was a fantastic glimpse of a rainbow and some glorious light as the weather changed…

Google Earth is a superb way to locate new spots, especially on a new ticket, and after a few hours poring over the laptop revealed a few likely looking spots to start on a canal, I threw the light lure gear in the van, and set off full of anticipation. For most of my light lure fishing, I use a Sonik AVX 3000 reel, and twin that with a Light-Tec lure rod from the same stable. Fished with braid, there is enough sensitivity in the rod tip to allow me to fish dropshot style, or with a light jig head, and be confident of catching. For this session, I wanted to travel light and explore as much of the canal as I could in a few short hours; one of the best purchases I’ve made recently was to obtain a British Army ‘chest rig’ which puts all the weight on my hips rather than my back, which I find much more comfortable. This rig was loaded with all I needed for the visit, including a drink, bar of chocolate, unhooking mat, and even my camera, without feeling overloaded; I can definitely recommend it, especially if the usual rucksack causes discomfort, and it’s much cheaper than ‘proper’ fishing kit, costing just £10. I parked the van in a cul-de-sac, walked through the gate, and arrived on the towpath. It was bitterly cold, overnight temperatures had dropped to well below freezing, and the canal looked like black glass in the early morning twilight… not a ripple was to be seen! On a small jighead, I threaded a tiny crayfish from Rapture UK, and dropped it into the edge of the canal to check the action. My first fish came within four seconds! The lure was hit on the drop by a hungry perch of a few ounces, immaculate and with scarlet fins; a perfect start. I worked the lure along the edge for a few minutes, and caught a few more miniperch, then began to flick the lure at the far bank. It appeared to be very shallow, so the lure was worked back towards in a series of

small ‘hops’ to cover a little bit more water. The far margin seemed bereft of fish, but as soon as the lure dropped into the ‘track’ down the middle of the canal, the bites came... It took an hour or so of experimenting to find that the most profitable retrieve was to cast to the far side, twitch the lure into the deepest part of the centre channel, and then allow it to stop for a few seconds. The perch were hitting the lure as soon as it moved from its rest position, and the bites were extremely positive as a string of pristine fish came to the bank. As is usual with canal fishing, some parts are packed with fish, others are completely empty, so as I walked, I flicked the lure into potential spots such as under boats, against brickwork, and beneath overhanging trees, to see what I could find. I spent thirty minutes in a spot that screamed fish, but had nothing, then moved to an area which had little to excite, and hooked a number of fish to well over a pound, the best a feisty 2lb 3oz stripey which fought strongly in clear water before surrendering. Over the course of three hours, I explored perhaps a mile of canal (six miles left!) and bagged around thirty fish, all on small lures. I had no interest on any lure bigger than an inch, and all fish attacked either the crayfish, or a hot pink Rapture ‘Slurp’ with a very wiggly tail; my favourite colour too! It was interesting to find that the fish were very tightly shoaled, a few feet either way and the swim seemed empty, but hit the shoal, and good sport ensued. It was fantastic way to spend a few hours, and a very successful introduction to the new club; I’m looking forward to my next visit!

The fixture list in the County Senior League was slightly shorter than usual this weekend due to many of the league’s teams taking part in County cup action. Seven games did take place though, with the Premier Division being the main focus. Premier Division League leaders Swallownest FC fell to their second loss of the season, as they fell 2-1 at home to Swinton Athletic. Jake Ford and Enzo Guarini were both on target for the in-form Swinton, who move up to third place, with six wins in their last seven league games. Defending champions Frecheville moved to within five points of the leaders (with a game in hand), after they drew 5-5 with Jubilee Sports. Frecheville remain the only unbeaten side in all four divisions of the County Senior League pyramid. They have had a busy week after an impressive 3-2 away win over Parkgate FC in the Senior Cup on Wednesday night. Athersley Recreation Reserves climbed above Millmoor Juniors and out of the bottom three, when they beat them 4-1 at Sheerien Park on Saturday. The win ends a run of three consecutive losses for Athersley. Houghton Main beat Denaby Main 3-1 for the second time in a little over a month, with goals from Joe Haywood, Adam Stead and Joe Bywater. The win moves Houghton Main up to fourth position in the table, just four points behind second placed Frecheville. Goals from Carey Welford, Luke Exley and Luke Marsden gave North Gawber Colliery a 3-0 win over Wombwell Main at Woolley Miners Welfare Ground. Division One There was just one game in Division One, but there were still plenty of goals scored as Oughtibridge WMFC beat Millmoor Juniors Reserves 6-3 at the Oughtibridge War Memorial Ground. Alex Torr starred for Oughtibridge with four goals to his name, as his team move up to third position in the table. Division Two North There was also only one game in Division Two North, as Bawtry Town beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development Squad 3-2 at the Doncaster Athletics Arena.

STRIKER FULL OF CONFIDENCE ‘ON YER BIKE’ WITH THE MILLERS Liam Mandeville is full of confidence after he inspired Rovers to victory at Exeter City. Rovers were trailing 1-0 when the young forward came off the bench at St James Park, but three minutes after his introduction he had headed home the equalising goal. He followed that up with key interventions to twice set up John Marquis for the strikes which secured the three points. The young forward said: “It’s one of those games that happens every so often, though hopefully I can make them happen more. “It was a great ball from Copps for my goal. I’ve worked on heading it down, I didn’t manage that, but still it has gone into the top corner. I tried to bring energy. I thought their centre-halves didn’t look as athletic as our team, so I tried to run at them as I was full of energy.” Manager Darren Ferguson was full of praise for Mandeville, and the teenager reckons he has plenty to thank for boss for. He said: “He just told me to try and change the game, and I think I did that. It wasn’t going to plan for whatever reason, we’ll obviously look at that on Monday, but thankfully we have got away with a win. Sometimes you just have to grind out a result – it’s a long way to come so three point is key. He is a great coach who has been really good for my progress, he is really improving my knowledge of the game. That’s the major improvement really, I am learning about the game every day. It is all about energy, playing a high tempo. My running style looks like I’m not trying sometimes but I am. It’s about the higher tempo and pressing,

the defensive side of my game has improved a lot. The manager has brought me self-belief and confidence, I am going on the pitch with no fear at the moment.” Mandeville could have had two goals to his name, but opted to play in Marquis for Rovers’ decisive third goal of the game. He picked up the ball in his own half before driving towards the area, then coolly slotting the ball across for Marquis to slam it home. For Mandeville, playing in his strike partner was as much about self-preservation as securing the win. With a smile on his face, Mandeville added:“I thought about shooting then I heard John’s voice which scared me out of it really – he wouldn’t have been happy if I hadn’t passed then missed!” Meanwhile Rovers are expanding their Academy staff and are currently recruiting for two roles - Football Development officers are required, and the full job descritptions togerther with details on how to apply are available on the club’s website. If you feel you have the qualities required for either of these posts simply visit: www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk to download the information packs. However applications do close at midnight on Thursday 17th November -so there’s not much time left!
On the morning of Saturday the 26th November at 10.00 the ‘Biking to New York’ team, Stonham Volunteers and RUCST, will be starting to hold social bike rides from the New York Stadium. For the first 2 rides, 26th of November and 10th of December we have been invited for ‘Coffee & Cake’ by the Planet X team, on Magna Way, but for the rest of the season we hope to continue these rides on the canal path once it re-opens. Primarily, the hope is to encourage more people to share the benefits that cycling can bring to physical health and wellbeing, so the rides will be of an ‘easy’ level. In addition to this, Pedal Ready and the Rotherham Cycle Boost (Hub) teams also plan to join us. Paul Truin, Volunteer Coordinator at Stonham, said, “Rotherham Utd Community Sports Trust have always been great in supporting cycling initiatives, including fund raising rides for the National
Autistic Society and Prostate Cancer UK. Following our volunteers promoting cycling, Biking to New York, during the past 3 years the next step of organising bike rides from the stadium came naturally. Regular cycling brings many benefits, and starting with supported social rides is a brilliant way to begin. Cheers” Jamie Noble, Head of Community said “ We are huge supporters of all health and exercise work not just football, cycling is a great way to stay fit and healthy whilst also see the beautiful surroundings and encourage people to leave the car at home to ease parking and reduce emissions” We would also like the sessions to help ‘identify’ those more accomplished cyclists who perhaps would like to consider representing their club on the massive ‘Football to Amsterdam 2017’ bike ride, on behalf of Prostate Cancer UK, Rotherham United and the Football League.
Darren Ferguson singled Liam Mandeville out for praise after the win over Exeter City. Mandeville headed home an equalising goal three minutes after coming off the bench at St James Park, then provided the passes for both John Marquis’ two strikes which sealed the 3-1 win. Ferguson said: “Liam changed the game really. He was excellent and clinical, scoring one and setting up two. He was without a shadow of a doubt the difference. He has taken a lot of confidence out of the past few games because he has done really well, and quite clearly he has won us the game – thought it was of course two great finishes from John Marquis.” Ferguson was delighted to send the 332 travelling supporters home happy, although he felt Rovers were not at their best prior to the final 20 minutes. He said “We took a hell of a following, and I’m delighted for them. The players know exactly what I feel about that performance. I’m just pleased we managed to dig out a win because that is the most important thing, but until Liam came on
we were not up to the standards I expect. We didn’t function as a team, credit to Exeter – they are a really good footballing team. They were probably the better team. But, credit to my players, we can’t play brilliantly every time but we have dug out a result. That is key, as over the course of the season every team challenging for where we want to be will have to dig out results like this. That is a real positive.”

GRITTY ROVERS FIGHT BACK DENIES GRETIANS THE POINTS Substitute Liam Mandeville inspired a Rovers fightback as they came from a goal down to claim victory at Exeter City. The Grecians threatened to claim their first home Sky Bet League Two win over the season when Reuben Reid powered home a penalty after 52 minutes, but Rovers fought back to score twice in five minutes. Mandeville was key in the revival, powering home a header to level the score then provided the deliveries which John Marquis twice smashed home. Darren Ferguson made a number of changes from the Checkatrade Trophy draw with Port Vale. Marko Marosi returned in goal, while Andy Butler was fit after his injury scare at Oldham Athletic last week. James Coppinger and Tommy Rowe also came back after missing the two cup games through a

combination of being rested/knocks. The early exchanges were even, with the home side throwing the ball quickly into the Rovers box twice in the opening minute. Rovers looked assured in possession, with one smart move seeing the ball quickly switched from the right to left wing but there was no one at the far post for Cedric Evina’s deep delivery - in part because John Marquis was involved earlier in the move. The home side were handed a great opportunity after nine minutes when they won a central free-kick about 25 yards out. Lee Holmes lifted the ball over the Rovers wall, but it was a simple stop for Marosi low at his bottom-left corner. Rovers were the next to threaten from a set-piece after 14 minutes, with Butler looping a header over from a Coppinger corner. Exeter had a succession of corners and

set-pieces as they tried to force the agenda, but they were almost undone after 23 minutes when Riccardo Calder led a quick counter along with Marquis and Coppinger. Coppinger was eventually outmuscled in the area. A minute later he had another opportunity, from a central free-kick, but lifted the ball high into the home terrace beind the goal. Chances were then harder to come by, with Tommy Rowe going closest with a good run through the middle but his powerful shot was straight down the throat of James Hamon who comfortably held the ball. Marquis also got away down the left and delivered a cross to Joe Wright, who got up well but could only direct his header over. Coppinger managed the best chance of the game after 39 minutes. A delivery from the left found Coppinger, who got a quick shot away which Hamon did well to block. Rovers enjoyed the best of the final few minutes of the game, with two chances from defensive errors. First a clearance was intercepted by Coppinger, who fed Blair, only for the later to slice his left-footed shot well wide. A minute later the roles were reversed, with Blair nicking the ball and trying to find Coppinger. This time the assistant’s flag brought an end to proceedings. Rovers made one change at the break, with Mathieu Baudry coming on in place of Butler. Rovers fell behind after 53 minutes when a long ball into the area found David Wheeler.
Marosi came rushing out to try and deal with the threat, but fouled the Grecians man. Reid stepped up and powered a shot past Marosi into the bottom left corner. Ferguson reacted by making his second change of the game, with Craig Alock coming on for Joe Wright. This was accompanied with a tactical change, with a switch to a back three. That brought more of the ball for Rovers, but chances were still at a premium. Coppinger’s set-piece deliveries were a real problem, with Blair unable to direct a header back across goal after a free-kick from the captain. Ferguson made his final susbtitution with 20 mintes to go, as Liam Mandeville came off the bench in place of Niall Mason. That change made all the difference. as within a few minutes the youngster had equalised - rising highest to power home a header from a Coppinger deliver. Mandeville was also instrumental in Rovers taking the lead after 78 minutes. He collected the ball on the right, ran towards goal, and played in a low cross which the onrushing Marquis smashed into the net. Mandeville again was instrumental in the third goal. He led a quick counter-attack, then fed Marquis who again left Hamon with no chance as he smashed the ball home.

RAMPANT BLADES EXTEND RUN 2016/17 United gave Chesterfield a goal start before cruising to victory at the Proact. Jon Nolan gave the home side the lead but the Blades were rampant in the second half, smashing in four without reply, with Kieron Freeman, John Fleck, Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke on target. Done, who played 45 minutes in midweek following a fractured jaw, returned to the team for the Sky encounter. The striker took over from Scougall, who dropped to the bench after missing training this week. Chesterfield’s starting XI included exBlades Evans and
Dimaio, whilst Harry Maguire’s brother, Laurence, was amongst the Spireites substitutes. United made a terrible start and handed the lead to the visitors inside two minutes. Evans got the better of Basham and his simple pass inside allowed NOLAN to run into the box and smash above Moore’s head into the net, in front of the Unitedites. The Blades lacked the fluidity of recent weeks in the early moments but did create their first chance on eight minutes, Freeman and Sharp were involved but the ball dropped to Lafferty’s right
foot and he fired at goalkeeper Fulton. Soon after Done’s header was pushed around a post after United switched the play from left to right and three corners in succession kept the Spireites back, although a number of cheap free-kicks gave the home side attacking options. Chesterfield were packing men behind the ball as United looked to get Coutts, Fleck and Duffy on the ball as much as possible. In terms of chances, Duffy’s effort was on target but comfortable for Fulton, who then repositioned himself to pluck the ball out of the air from

Speaking in the aftermath of victory in Derbyshire, Wilder remarked: “After the first five minutes it was a brilliant afternoon. Credit to Chesterfield for starting better than us, we were sloppy early on and a couple
of individual errors cost us a goal. That gave Chesterfield a big lift, but it was a good game, we grew into it and controlled it better the more we got on the ball. We didn’t bark at the players at half-time or smash any tea cups, we just demanded that bit more quality in the final third and urged them to remain patience. Second-half we were on the front foot consistently, Duffy upped his game as did Coutts and Fleck and that
enable us to dominate the midfield area. When we do that, we know we have the quality to overrun the opposition.” The Blades boss added: “We always look to fill the box and convert the chances we are creating and thankfully yet again, the players have pulled themselves through a difficult situation and kept that unbeaten run going. We are enjoying ourselves and the supporters
Sharp’s deflected shot. The final chance of the half, however, fell to the home side. A late O’Shea corner saw Evatt’s back post header come back off the crossbar before the Blades cleared at the second attempt. The first notable moment of the second half was referee Sarginson noting Chesterfield’s timewasting on 49 minutes. Soon after, inside 60 seconds of each other, both sides had a chance but shots from Evans and Sharp were saved by Moore and Fulton respectively. A leveller, though, was just moments away. Patient build up was rewarded when Fleck clipped in a cross from the left and FREEMAN powered in from the back post to force the ball past Fulton. The next chance was

the last before Evans was replaced. He raced down the left chance and his shot was partially blocked by Moore before Wright headed clear. For United, Lafferty headed wide a deep Basham cross and Done could not direct home Freeman’s cross after a quick break. Boss Wilder threw on Clarke for defender Wright in a positive move and it was rewarded inside five minutes. United grabbed the lead on 72 minutes when Duffy laid off to FLECK, who was afforded the space to line up a shot and beat Fulton from 20 yards. Many of the 2,761 Blades fans inside the stadium were still celebrating when a third goal was added. Duffy was again involved, delivering a deep cross for SHARP to beat Evatt
at the back post, heading past Fulton. For the home side, Anderson headed at Moore before Wilder reverted to three central defenders but the next goal also came from the Blades, on 81 minutes. There were holes in the home defence and there were a number of passes before the ball dropped to CLARKE, who curled left footed beyond Fulton’s despairing dive. The closing minutes were a formality, United could have timewasted like Chesterfield if they wished, but opted to keep pushing forward and Lafferty had a shot deflected over before the final whistle, whilst O’Shea missed a sitter, summing up the home side’s day.

NEW HOME FOR LADIES In the summer the formal association between the Blades and Sheffield United Ladies was confirmed and recently the partnership has developed into the Ladies first team moving back to the SteelPhalt United Academy at Shirecliffe. The team trained there during their years in the old
Midland Combination league around 10 years ago and have played matches there occasionally but the new deal is hoped to be a more permanent one.The players are already enjoying and benefiting from training on the superb surfaces available and have stepped up to training twice a week. For competitive matches the team had
a very good first game back at the Academy with a record 14-1 league victory against Ruddington Village. United still are in four competitions so it’s hoped the facilities will be used right to the end of the season as only the Womens FA Cup has restrictions on artificial surfaces
the first team this season. The changes will likely lead to a fine for the Blades, although you’d struggle to find many fans concerned about the potential penalty. The Checkatrade Trophy has backfired in a way that the EFL were certainly not expecting. The promise of giving Under-23 players from the Championship and the Premier League game time hasn’t occurred. Instead, Premier League ‘Under 23’ sides such as Stoke City have fielded players like the 35year-old Peter Crouch, and the 26-year-old Bojan Krkic. Teams such as the Blades can be penalised for fielding youngsters,
as making too many changes from the previous league game is a violation of EFL rules. The changes have paid off for Wilder and the team at the SteelPhalt Academy, with 17-year-old Slater scoring on his debut. Speaking on the
opportunities given to the young players, Wilder said: “Its our ambition as a club to get them into the first team environment, it’s a new experience for them, and one that they should want more.”

TOP MARKS FOR UNDER 23s Wideman Fraser Preston and goalkeeper Dan Wallis were the standout performers in the Under23s’ 1-0 win over defending champions Huddersfield and head coach Neil Thompson was delighted with his side’s victory in an “old-fashioned game” of contrasting halves.
Preston’s strike after the break separated the sides at Sheffield FC and Thompson said following the confidence-boosting win over the Terriers: “We knew it was going to be a battle and a scrap, and it was. “They had the better of the first half. We didn’t get close to them and put them under pressure.
“We had a chat at half time and I told the players to get closer, compete, and not to stand off them. “When Huddersfield are playing their way around the back, you have got to put them under pressure in their half of the pitch, which we did. “We affected the game in the second half, created several good chances

and got our goal.” He continued: “It was an old-fashioned game – a lot of tough play out there, and our two centre halves Connor O’Grady and Jordan Thorniley were terrific. “Dan did really well in goal and Fraser’s come up trumps for us as well.”

ENGLAND BOSS HAILS OWLS YOUNGSTER England Under-18 coach Neil Dewsnip was delighted with his side’s 2-0 win over Poland last week and hailed Owls youngster George Hirst. The Wednesday striker bagged another brace for his country and that proved the difference in the first game of the mini tournament. Dewsnip said: “George first and foremost worked really, really hard. He’s very honest as a player; his work ethic defensively for the team has an impact on everybody else.” The 17-year-old almost capped a fantastic evening by completing his hat-trick but saw his late attempt clip
the upright and go agonisingly wide. The England coach added: “He’s scored a great first goal, got himself a penalty kick which he’s converted. Then he’s in bits in the dressing room over missing his third one right at the end. He can be really pleased with his performance.” England Under-18s drew 0-0 with France on Monday evening and in the process were crowned victorious in the International Trophy – a mini tournament that also included Poland. England kicked off with a 2-0 victory over Poland on Friday evening at the Lamex Stadium, Stevenage.
Two goals either side of the interval from Owls striker George Hirst settled the contest. Six minutes before the break, Hirst slid in at the back stick to convert an Andre Dozzell centre and then struck from the penalty spot in the second half. The young Lions then came through a difficult test on Monday evening but showed resilience
against a strong French side to make it six unbeaten. England were under pressure for large parts of the clash at Peterborough’s ABAX Stadium but held firm to be crowned overall winners. Having played the full 90 minutes on Friday, Hirst came on from the bench after 64 minutes against France.
