TWELVE TREATS THIS CHRISTMAS Doncaster town centre’s trees are up and the lights are on so that means Christmas is just around the corner. To mark a fantastic festive season, the council is launching a brand new campaign on social media that will reveal the town centre’s Twelve Treats this Christmas. People are being urged to visit the My Doncaster Facebook site and look out on Twitter for twelve fabulous treats in the town centre and markets this Christmas.

The posts will appear on the town centre and markets social media accounts too. It’s all part of a plan to showcase how much Doncaster has to offer, whether that’s shopping or entertainment or family fun. There is even a free parking offer and free shuttle transport throughout December so that all parts of the town are accessible saving people pounds to spend on Christmas. The popular land train - which will be free - is chugging back

into the town centre, from Thursday 1 to Saturday 24 December, linking the Markets and Frenchgate to Waterdale and providing a circular “hop on hop off” service seven days a week. And on Thursday 8 December people can hop off and see the Coca-Cola Truck and Winter Wonderland experience. From Saturday 3 December to Tuesday 3 January the first three hours of parking at the Chappell Drive car park, close to

Doncaster Markets, will be free. The campaign will also give details of free parking over the Christmas and New Year weekends in all council operated car parks. There’s late night shopping information as well as details of the extended market opening times. So people can do all their gift and food shopping right here in Doncaster. But it’s not all about shopping, treats will be revealed relating to the fantastic range of pantos being staged

this year as well as musical events and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the hospitality at the town’s historic Mansion House. Councillor Bill Mordue, cabinet member for Business, Skills, Tourism and Culture, said: “It is wonderful to see so much going on in the town centre this festive season. I hope shoppers find the special parking offer attractive and that people enjoy the road train and the other festive attractions.”

FIVE-UP FOR AWARD-WINNING GREY TO GREEN REGENERATION SCHEME A scheme that has breathed new life into the city’s former inner ring road by creating a series of sustainable meadows and public art has celebrated its fifth award of the year. Grey To Green won the National Green Champion Award, Construction, category at an award ceremony held at the Houses of Parliament earlier this month. These awards are part of the International Green Apple Awards for environmental best practice. The project has already won two Yorkshire in Bloom awards, the Gold Standard and Best Environmental project in Yorkshire 2016 and a brace of Sheffield Design Awards, for Best Open Space and Overall Outstanding Project Award 2016. The Grey To Green Corridor has transformed Sheffield’s Riverside Business District, developing the former inner ring road into an eye-catching display of public art, benches, a new urban drainage system and flower and plant beds designed by University of Sheffield Professor Nigel Dunnett, the man behind the

gardens in London’s Olympic park.lucia_again The planted areas also provide an innovative ‘sustainable urban drainage system’ (SUDs) designed by the Council and leading national experts to help flood relief in this part of the city by soaking up run off to the river within the ‘flood zone’ and helping to reduce flood risk from surface water. Councillor Leigh Bramall, deputy leader of Sheffield City Council and cabinet member for business and economy, said: “Our project team has clearly done a fantastic job on this scheme as seen by the number of very well-regarded awards it continues to receive. “Grey To Green has completely transformed a rather neglected part of the inner city and links well with our wider vision for West Bar and Kelham Island, providing an eye-catching introduction to the city.” Five eye-catching art features have also been added to provide new landmarks and to reveal some of the area’s colourful and unexpected history and associations – telling stories of when West Bar was the city’s party street. The Grey To Green team is set to add to its prize locker at next month’s CEEQUAL awards. It is hotly-tipped to receive an Innovation award but is also shortlisted for the Water Management and Landscape awards.

day at the edge of time, in this place of pure and undiluted possibility, begins an inspired incantation to a life rediscovered and to a newly found wonder in the mysteries of the world and the mind. The word Varekai (pronounced ver·ay·’kie) means “wherever” in the Romany language of the gypsies—the universal wanderers. Directed by Dominic Champagne, this production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to those who quest with infinite passion along the path that leads to Varekai.

About Varekai Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary world – a world where something else is possible. A world called Varekai. The sky lets go a solitary young man, and the story of Varekai begins. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world imbued with fantastical creatures, a young man takes flight in an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this

My best mate just fainted on the London eye.. But it’s okay, he’s slowly coming around. Sometimes I use big words which I don’t really understand to make me seem more photosynthesis.

What do you call a magic dog? A Labracadabrador.

Born this week...

I got a brass instrument for my birthday, but it’s still in it’s box, I’m not one to blow my own trumpet. Did you hear about the poker player who lost his arm and got a prosthetic replacement? He’s finding it hard to deal with. Got a job as a church bell ringer. It’s my first day so they’re just showing me the ropes. My ex-girlfriend is standing at the opposite end of the museum from me! I want to say hello but there’s just too much history between us. My wife said she wanted me to put the magic back into our relationship. I don’t think sawing her in half was quite what she had in mind. My wife has left me. She said I was too passive, and didn’t stand up for myself enough. I can’t really argue with that. A bloke on a tractor has just driven past me shouting “The end of the world is nigh!” I think it was Farmer Geddon. What word is always pronounced incorrectly? Incorrectly. I’m pretty sure I’ve recently put some weight on. I’ve not actually weighed myself; it’s just a gut feeling.

The current alignment could throw up some surprises as far as your closest relationships are concerned, and one or two home truths may be exchanged. You are given a lot of extra gravitas by the stars at present, and this can see you determined also to make progress in your career or status. Call for more…

You may start to feel more optimistic about your resources, and with Saturn linking well in this part of your ‘scope with two other influences, past hard work and application can start to pay off. Yet this is probably not the best of weeks to be too gung-ho about your immediate budget. Call for more…

Your relationships can be given a boost by the New Moon, but the complex influence of Neptune does need to be considered, and especially around your more worldly interactions where you can’t assume anyone’s goodwill. A friend can also prove unpredictable. Call for more astral advice…

The New Moon gives you tremendous encouragement to refresh the areas of your existence that are really important to you. This may also include your appearance. The hazy influence of Neptune suggests that someone close to you may not be in total accord with your hopes. Call for more…

This can be the season of goodwill, and this week’s New Moon may see you doing something for those less fortunate. However, it’s also going to be important to grapple with your own organisational needs. Someone may also be quite adept at laying on a slice of gilt. Call for more news and advice…

It’s going to be important not to get too caught up in a swirling mist of gossip, which could descend upon your situation this week. Once Mercury joins your sign, greater clarity will be possible. However, you could find yourself quite impulsive when it comes to your love life. Call for more…

If there is a strand of your situation which is exciting you, but requires any kind of investment, do be sure that you’ve a clear idea of the downside as much as the up before you invest too much energy or cash into this. If you’re in a close relationship, a fair share of chores is also essential. Call for more…

The initiatives you take this week, as long as you are not too idealistic over finances, stand a tremendous chance of success. Despite the big picture looking so positive, an issue that has been hidden thus far around your romantic situation can come bubbling to the surface. Call for more…

A conversation you have with a loved one this week may prompt you to create a little bit more space from them or try to rejuvenate the relationship with some changes. Some of what you require may be quite nuanced and be rather sensitive, and may require a deft touch to explain. Call for more news…

As far as your key talents and skills are concerned, those in positions of influence could be keen to praise or promote you. Yet, this goodwill could soon be squandered if you want everything on your own terms. This comes from the influence of Neptune, so do view the world as it really is. Call for more…

People will take what you say at face value, so it’s going to be important to double-check with someone that they have the same understanding as you. This can be particularly true around work interactions and appointments. In a romantic tie, a more restless streak can creep in. Call for more…

SANTA ON PARADE AS THOUSANDS WELCOME CHRISTMAS AT MEADOWHALL Santa has finally come to town with his special parade through Meadowhall, as thousands welcomed him and the opening of his Magical Kingdom. The annual parade, led by Santa in his sleigh along with lucky Meadowhall competition winners Lexi (aged 5) and Demi (aged 2), is now a Christmas fixture for the region with fans lining his route along the malls as he made his way to the Magical Kingdom, located just outside the Oasis Dining Quarter

Courtyard. The event marked the opening of Santa’s Magical Kingdom, which last year welcomed over 50,000 visitors. This year Santa will be in place to meet and greet just as many children, right up to and including Christmas Eve. Darren Pearce, Meadowhall Centre Director, commented: “We love welcoming Santa to Meadowhall each year. Even though our late opening hours have already started, this is a huge part of our

Christmas entertainment and it’s wonderful to see so many children eager to tell him their wish list!” Meadowhall’s Magical Kingdom, which stands at an incredible 20 metres tall, is a spectacular bespoke-designed grotto complete with a Disney inspired colourchanging light show every 15 minutes to add to the Christmas cheer. To accompany the Grotto this year, Meadowhall also have a new augmented reality game – “Freezy’s

Christmas Adventure” – which allows users to scan various graphics in-centre and bring them to life. All little ones who enter Santa’s Magical Kingdom this year will receive a very special Mr Freezy Igloo Hat, which when scanned with the “myMall” app (available on iOS and Android), will come to life in front of you! Jingle Bells and Snow Boots at the ready as you embark on Frosty’s virtual journey around Meadowhall this festive season. For clues on

where to locate the five magic Mr Freezy pictures, pick up a Centre Guide. Tickets for the Grotto are priced at £4.50 per child, which includes an exclusive present specially chosen by the man himself. Meadowhall recommends purchasing tickets online at www. meadowhall.co.uk but a number of tickets will also be available from the in-Centre ticket desk located near the bottom of the escalators near Boots.

PHARMACISTS OFFER HELP WITH SELF-CARE FOR LIFE NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) want to highlight the health expert on the High Street – the community pharmacist. Pharmacists are fully qualified to advise you on the best course of action. They can offer expert advice and treatment for many common illnesses, such as aches and pains, colds and flu, itchy skin conditions and simple eye infections. You don’t need an appointment and many pharmacists have private consultation areas, so they are a good first port of call. There are currently 52 million GP appointments and 3.7m A&E visits for common ailments, conditions which some people could have treated at home or with pharmacists’ advice. Dr Zak McMurray, Medical Director for NHS Sheffield CCG and Sheffield GP said “Your local community pharmacist

is a trained healthcare professional who can provide expert advice on the best treatment for a wide range of common illnesses and minor ailments. Some people go to the doctor with common ailments because they are unsure how long symptoms last and need reassurance that it isn’t anything more serious. Instead of waiting for an appointment at your surgery, it is worthwhile going to your local pharmacist first. The pharmacist can explain the normal duration of ailments and give advice on symptom relief. It is also worth remembering that you don’t need antibiotics for colds and flu, in fact, taking them can reduce their effectiveness when taken for ailments they can help with. If you do go to see your pharmacist, remember to take details of any medication you may have been taking with you.”

Sheffield pharmacies also offer a number of NHS services such as help with stopping smoking, flu vaccination, emergency contraception, medicines reviews as well as cholesterol and blood pressure checks if appropriate. Your pharmacist can also advise you about other NHS services and refer you if necessary. So, save yourself the bother of booking a GP appointment or waiting hours at A&E and visit your pharmacist who can help you understand how to SelfCare for Life. To find your nearest pharmacy visit www.nhs.uk, call NHS 111 or download the free NHS Sheffield CCG Choose Well app for iPhone or Android, just search for ‘NHS Sheffield’ in your app store.

BLIGHTY CALLING SOUTH YORKSHIRE CHASE THE PUD Did your relative fight in the Far East during World War II? If so, a new website may have a film of them sending home a message to loved ones! Hundreds of films of soldiers fighting in the Far East sending their messages home to loved ones were made and shown at cinemas during the war. A picture gallery on the website features 150 Sheffield and South Yorkshire servicemen and one woman. Some of them, including messages from Doncaster and Anston, were identified and digitised by the Yorkshire Film Archive. Professor Steve Hawley, of the Manchester School of Art, is running a “Calling Blighty” project aimed at reaching people in South Yorkshire to identify some of the 150 South Yorkshire Servicemen & women featured in the newly-digitised gallery on the website, and hopefully to share memories of their experiences. He said “The ‘Calling Blighty’ series is nearly 400 12 minute films that were made in 1944-6 of service men (and very few women) in the Far East recording a message to be shown in local cinemas to wives and relatives. Of the 391 issues

made only 64 are known to survive and of these the majority are of Greater Manchester area. However, seven of them are of Sheffield servicemen, and a further two have some South Yorkshire men, and have not been seen publicly for many years (or probably ever), and are held by the British Film Institute .” A special screening event featuring Manchester soldiers was held in the city last December, where 60 of the servicemen were traced. The films were shown for the first time in 70 years to an audience of relatives – and two of the men featured in them who were still alive. Steve said: “This was a great success, with many tears and much laughter, and a packed house of 250.” Steve plans to run a similar event at the Showroom cinema in Sheffield city centre, probably next year, showing edited highlights of the local films to relatives. To see the picture galleries, go to www.nwfa.mmu.ac.uk/blighty/index.php or mail S.Hawley@mmu.ac.uk if you recognise someone or know something about the films.

WIN A COPY OF THE SHEFFIELD COOKBOOK: SECONDHELPINGS After the huge success of The Sheffield Cook Book, Meze Publishing were thrilled to announce that they are offering Second Helpings – released last week. The book is the 17th in the series of regional ‘Get Stuck In’ guides by Meze Publishing, who were recently crowned Best Newcomer at the Independent Publishing Awards 2016. The Sheffield Cook Book published in 2014 sold over 12,000 copies and since the Sheffield food scene has come on in leaps and bounds in the last two years, Meze Publishing have decided to showcase this in their forthcoming sequel; The Sheffield Cook Book: Second Helpings. This book is all about championing local suppliers and making the most of the food and drink on offer by showcasing innovative delicious dishes that all home cooks can try. It will feature a vast collection of stories and recipes behind some of Sheffield’s finest food producers, restaurants, café bars, growers, gastro pubs, farm shops, and delicatessens. The likes of Mitchells Wines, Beeches of Walkley, True North, Crawshaws, Peppercorn and Wortley Arms have all opted to once again feature in the follow up after experiencing first-hand how rewarding it was to be a part of the debut book. “Life is too short to drink bad wine the same can be said about food, so it is great

to be part of this celebration of things made in Sheffield! ” says John Mitchell of Mitchell’s Wine. Meze have also got a number of new and exciting additions this time around such as popular bakery Forge Bakehouse, Mexican canteen Street Food Chef, classy yet cosy Thyme Café, TripAdvisor number one The Hidden Gem Café, local favourite The Bhaji Shop and afternoon tea specialist Jameson’s Café and Tea Rooms. “When we were asked if we would like to be part of The Sheffield Cook Book we couldn’t answer YES quick enough,” says manager of The Hidden Gem Café, Sarah-Jayne Field. “We are very fortunate to be surrounded by so many up and coming chefs & eateries throughout the city and it’s a privilege to be involved” “This is the first time The Hidden Gem has been linked with such a successful venture and its one that really does excite us.” You may also recognise a few wellknown faces in the book such as Sheffield’s own MasterChef 2016 finalist Stuart Archer and loveable Great British Bake Off contestant Howard Middleton, who said: “We have become a richly diverse foodie city, with some fantastic local producers and a restaurant scene that’s inspired by different cultures and cuisines. “I’m delighted to contribute a recipe that

takes the humble fruit crumble of my Sheffield childhood and gives it touch of Chinese flavour.” To those of us in-the-know, it comes as no surprise that Sheffield has an amazing and diversified independent food scene. Restaurants, street food vendors and delis offering a large and varied range have been at the forefront of championing our city’s groaning table of delightful wares. We have made it our mission to showcase as many of these foodie businesses in our lovely new book The Sheffield Cook Book: Second Helpings. The Sheffield Cook Book: Second Helpings will be priced at £14.95 RRP and will be available to purchase from all businesses involved, Waterstones, WH Smiths, select local gift shops and online at www.amazon.co.uk or www.mezepublishing.co.uk

READER COMPETITION The lovely people over at Meze Publishing have kindly given us two copies of The Sheffield Cookbook: Second Helpings to give away to lucky readers. All you have to do is answer the following question and send your entry with your name and a daytime contact telephone number to either info@mercurynewspaper. co.uk or Mercury Newspaper, 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before Noon on Friday 2nd December. In what year was the first Sheffield Cookbook published? A) 2014 B) 2004 C) 1973 Competition closes Noon on 2/12/16 • Winners drawn at random.

DON’T HAVE A CRASHING CHRISTMAS! The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership will be promoting the Don’t Drink and Drive message in Barnsley on 30th November with a stark reminder of the dangers of drink driving. From 10am until 4 pm on Wednesday, shoppers visiting Barnsley Town Centre will come face to face with a crashed car – to illustrate the horrific results of what can happen if you drink and drive! The mangled Vauxhall Corsa has been obtained by the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership from motorway contractors, BDV 24 hour Breakdown and Recovery Services, as part of its annual Christmas drink-drive campaign. This very visual promotional event will accompany the Police’s enforcement activity, with roads policing officers out in force across South Yorkshire throughout December. They will be stopping vehicles and carrying out roadside breath tests. Drivers convicted of drink driving face a minimum 12 month driving ban, a criminal record, a hefty fine, up to 6 months in prison and endorsement on their licence for 11 years. This implication and many others will be pointed out to the passing public by officers from the Partnership, whose aim is to reduce the number of people killed or injured on the roads of South Yorkshire. They will be engaging with drivers in an effort to hammer home the risks and repercussions of being over the prescribed alcohol limit when behind the wheel of a car. So, if you are attending Christmas parties or meeting up with friends or work colleagues to celebrate the festive season and planning to drink alcohol, make arrangements for getting home without driving. Don’t accept a lift from a driver you know has drunk alcohol. And if you have a drink on your night out, beware the

morning after – you could still be over the legal limit many hours after your last drink. The Safer Roads Partnership will also be visiting the following venues to talk to shoppers about the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving this festive season: Thursday 1st December – Doncaster Town Centre Friday 2nd December – The Moor, Sheffield Saturday 3rd December – Retail World, Parkgate, Sheffield Joanne Wehrle, South Yorkshire Safer Roads Education Manager, said that the display in Barnsley will be attempting to press home the huge impact that drink driving can have on people. She added: “We hope that our hard-hitting display will help to remind drivers that drinking and driving wrecks lives and will not be tolerated. By drinking and driving, you risk your life, those of your passengers and others on the road. “Think about the consequences of a drink drive conviction in terms of your finances, the impact on your job, loss of independence and the shame of having a criminal record. Worst still, think how you would feel if, as a result of drink driving, you caused a collision where someone was killed or seriously injured. That’s a life sentence you won’t want to live with.” South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Area Manager for Community Safety, Steve Helps, said: “There are simple things that everyone can do to make it less likely to suffer a collision on the roads. Always keep your distance from the vehicle in front, watch your speed, wear a seatbelt and remember to drive to the conditions. The work we are doing with the Safer Roads Partnership aims to drive this message home for a safer South Yorkshire.” Drink driving – it’s not worth the risk.

the lure into a few more likely spots, and took a few more spiky ‘sergeants’ before hitting something very solid indeed! What I thought with Clint Walker was a tentative pluck became very heavy as I I’ve been back on the canal again, with flicked the rod up to set the hook, and although mixed results, but I’ve obviously upset some sluggish, it did move slowly across the canal. one this week too, as it’s been a costly period A few seconds later, my prize surfaced! A financially… personal best without doubt, but unfortunately Last week, I joined a new club; this week I did it was one of DFS’s finest, a large, completely the same, and for the princely sum of just £10, sodden, sofa cushion, and not the lump of secured a ticket which gives me access to some a perch I was after! Safely unhooked it was more canal, and this time, the ticket lasts until lifted from the canal, and deposited in a handy March! This ticket gives access to the stretch skip… of water adjacent to the one I fished last week, I arrived at the target swim as the heavens but features a popular local spot (which shall opened, so sought refuge under a nearby remain nameless!) with depths of almost seven bridge to keep dry. Whilst ensconced beneath feet, around a wide, sweeping bend, lined with the arches, I dropped the lure in, and picked reeds and trees; perfect for perch… off a few more small perch, then cast towards Google Earth came in handy again to locate an overhanging tree. Almost instantly, the lure a car park right on towpath, so I parked up, was smashed into, and whatever it was, took and wandered the ten yards to the waterway, off towards the safety of the reeds, diving where I found a bridge, and some concrete deep to try and escape. After a minute or so or moorings to start my exploration. Once again, fight, a huge perch rolled on the far bank, but my lightweight Sonik kit was deployed, with that was unfortunately the last I saw of it as my favourite small pink wriggly lure on the the hook slipped, and the monster was gone! hook, and it was dropped into the edge, right Typical… under the bridge, where the shadows were at Another hour saw a procession of smaller their darkest. A couple of casts later, and I felt perch, but then it was time to head home. A the solid thump of a decent perch as it attacked grinding noise emanating from somewhere the lure. I love the first hit of a good perch, that on the van as I drove back, saw it sent to the fraction of a second when you think you have garage for repair at a cost of £113 to replace snagged the bottom, before you feel the first a worn bearing, which didn’t go down very shake of the head as the fish tries to shed the well, but at least it was ready for my next trip, hook; it’s exciting stuff, and on small canals, it a return to the canal, but again, a different area. can be great fun! I fished much lower down the stretch this time, I had a couple of perch from the first swim, but a combination of bitterly cold wind, heavy the best another 2lb+ fish, which around my rain, hail, and coloured water, made things patch, are fish to be treasured, and it started my very difficult indeed. Aside from a couple session pleasingly. I walked down towards the of reasonable early fish, I walked at least a main attraction, the target swim, and lobbed mile of canal, and returned only a handful of

tiny perch for my efforts. My usual pink lure didn’t elicit much, and jigging didn’t seem to provoke much interest, so I changed to drop shot tactics, and attached a tiny Ecogear Grass Minnow SS. Despite the change of plan, fish were still hard to find, and another length of canal was explored before I decided that I’d had enough of being cold and wet, and should head back. As usual, ‘one last cast’ became several, and it was another hour before I returned to the van, having found a nest of fish which were plundered to make the score a little more respectable. As I made ready to depart, I was shocked to notice a large crack in the windscreen, which certainly hadn’t been there

when I left it! Whether it was down to the constantly changing weather exacerbating an existing nick in the screen, or down to the chaps using a stonecutter in the adjacent drive (for some reason, they weren’t there anymore) I don’t know, but I do know it cost me £75 to replace! My twice weekly outings had resulted in repairs costing almost £200, which must be by far the most expensive fishing trips I’ve ever made, and all I had to show for it was a single decent fish, a lost monster, and a personal best cushion, and they say fishing is supposed to be fun… You try telling my wife that when she sees the next bank statement; I may not be fishing next week…

Division Two South With leaders Kiveton Park not in action, New Bohemians had the chance to cut their lead to one point. They took that chance in style, as goals from Ryan Taff, Ed Behan and Jack Cooke gave them a 3-0 victory over Millmoor Juniors Development Squad. Strangely, New Bohemians have a -1 goal difference. Just four points separate the top seven in Division Two South. Sheffield Medics (sixth) are the highest other winners in that group, after a 3-1 away win over fifth placed Davy FC Reserves. Sheffield Lane Top are in seventh, after a similar 3-1 win over Renishaw Rangers. AFC Dronfield Reserves recorded their third stalemate in four games, after they were held 1-1 at Gosforth Playing Fields by Maltby Main Reserves. Caribbean Sports Reserves registered their first league win since September 24th, as they beat bottom side Sheffield Bankers Reserves 2-0 at Hillsborough College.

It was a busy weekend in the County Senior League, with a 20 games taking place on Saturday across the league’s four divisions. Premier Division League leaders Swallownest FC bounced back from last weeks’ loss to Swinton Athletic, with a 5-2 home win over North Gawber Colliery. Second placed Frecheville kept Swallownest’s lead to five points, as they beat Athersley Recration Reserves 2-0 to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves moved into third place, after a hard-fought 3-2 win over Houghton Main at the Look Local Stadium. Handsworth Parramore Reserves are just a point further back in fourth, after a 4-1 home win made it back-to-backs wins for the first time in the league since August. Denaby Main claimed their first victory of the season, with a 2-1 win over Millmoor Juniors at Grange Park. The win is not enough to take Denaby of the foot-of-the-table, but the points are precious with the rest of the bottom six losing on Saturday. Jubilee Sports were 3-1 winners over Denaby United at the Balby Carr Community Academy. Jubilee have scored 12 goals in their last three matches. Division One League leaders Wickersley FC registered their fourth consecutive win, with a 1-0 victory over Caribbean Sports at Wickersley School. Goals from Martin Jones (3), Aaron Hadfield (2), Ben Snee and Daniel Duffy were all on target for Brinsworth Whitehill in their 7-1 win over Davy FC at Pheonix Sports Club. Brinsworth are just two points behind Wickersley with four games in hand. Stevie Bennett starred once again for Grimethorpe Sports, scoring three times in a 6-3 win over Millmoor Juniors Reserves at Shafton Welfare Park. Fourth placed Grimethorpe are the team to watch in the County Senior League this season, with 46 goals to their name in just eight games. KENNY SEEKING DEFENSIVE SOLUTION

Rotherham United boss Kenny Jackett admits he is still searching for an answer to his side’s defensive woes after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Derby County. The Millers gave themselves a mountain to climb as they found themselves two goals down in the first 20 minutes after Tom Ince pounced on a rebound after ‘keeper Lee Camp had saved his initial penalty before Darren Bent doubled the Rams lead with a well-taken effort. Ince added a third for the home side in the second half before Camp denied the former Hull City man a hat-trick with a fine penalty save. Speaking following the iPro Stadium affair, Jackett insisted his side must improve their goals against column if they are to have a reversal of fortunes. “We are still struggling to find a defensive set up that can keep us competitive.” he admitted. “The outstanding statistic for us is again, the goals against column. Maybe we overcommitted men forward and it’s all frustrating when you lose a game as a coach. “I think the better side won and I can’t say that wasn’t the case. We actually started the game well but we gave them two goals which was disappointing.” Jackett believed his side acquitted themselves well at the beginning of each half but he conceded that defensive errors contributed to his side’s downfall. “We actually started the game pretty well for

the first 20/25 minutes, we had a lot of it,” he added. “We had a fair amount of the ball and made some inroads on both wings but we gave two poor goals away on the counter attack. “We were in good positions and they’ve gone down the other end and it was a poor challenge for the penalty and then we’ve been caught in a one-on-one situation at the back. “It was similar in the second half and we started okay. We played some football and got in and around their box but again we gave another poor, straight forward goal away in the second half.”

Despite the disappointing nature of the result in Derbyshire, Jackett was quick to praise the efforts of his forward players, who toiled well with little reward against Steve McClaren’s high-flyers. “Izzy Brown showed that he had some power when he came on and Odemwingie and Ward did well too,” Jackett added. “We have some players going forward but it’s just at the other end. “We need to be better than we’ve been than we have this season and that’s the big thing. For us to be competitive in this league, we need to address the goals against column first.”

with it and he went and saw the doctor, they’ll both be fine. He’ll have to get on with it; it’s only a broken finger! “We can only concentrate on ourselves. If we can keep the consistency – we’re still unbeaten at home which is really important because we’ve got all the big ones to come here. “If we win next week then we’re 36 points from 18 games and we’d be delighted with that, absolutely delighted.” Ferguson reserved special praise – some of it backhanded – for some of his younger charges in Liam Mandeville and Jordan Houghton whom he can build a team around. He said: “I thought he (Mandeville) was very good. I said before the game that there was nothing better than getting your teammates out of trouble as a young lad. He was a handful, scored the goal – both the strikers did – and I’m really pleased. “He needs to get over all the “I’m tired” nonsense, he’s 21, he’s in the team and he needs to stay in the team and make sure Willo (Andy Williams) doesn’t get back in the team and if he scores goals then he’ll be fine, it doesn’t make any difference to me who’s playing. He’s now at a level where he needs to be consistent. Physically he seemed okay to me. “I thought he was very good, and we are looking to extend it (Houghton’s loan deal). We will be having discussions next week with

Chelsea and will get an answer next week as to whether we can do that or not but certainly I’d look to extend it no question.”

FERGUSON DELIGHTED WITH LATE HOME WIN Darren Ferguson was delighted with the performance of his team which kept the pressure on the division’s pacesetters. Ferguson’s side left it late against Hartlepool United and he said anything other than the three points would have been a “travesty.” “It would have been a travesty if we hadn’t won,” he said. “For me we totally dominated the game; I thought we were really good. “What we wanted to do we did really well, we got control of the game and need to cut out the decision making in terms of the lapses of concentration that let them back in to it because it gives teams something to hang on to.

“If we hadn’t have won it then I wouldn’t have been disappointed with the performance, I thought we stuck to what we wanted to do and that’s a real key factor for me. “I said that to the players at half time, what we want to do is keep believing in what we’re doing and I thought some of our football was very good and we were very dominant and it was a good goal that won us the game.” The win over United extended Rovers’ unbeaten home run to eleven games but didn’t come without incident as goalkeeper Marko Marosi was substituted with suspected concussion and his replacement Ross Etheridge – who was beaten by a first half penalty – also broke a finger. “He’s broke his finger,” Ferguson confirmed. “We couldn’t take him off, he had to get on

BLADES TAME SHREWS TO GO SECOND In an action-packed game, United completed a first double of the season and also moved up to second in the table. First half goals from Billy Sharp and Stefan Scougall set the Blades on the way to victory in a game that saw two red cards and missed penalty. Boss Wilder named an unchanged team, the starting XI that extended the unbeaten run at Chesterfield were given the green light to face Shrewsbury. There were changes on the bench, Ramsdale and Chapman, back from international duty, took over from Long and Whiteman. United quickly asserted themselves

and put the Shrews on back foot. A good move down the right saw Duffy’s effort inadvertently blocked by teammate Freeman just moments before the home side grabbed the lead. A tremendous diagonal ball from Fleck saw SHARP beat the offside trap and then drill into the bottom corner, beyond Halstead’s right hand. Duffy limped off on ten minutes and Shrews hit back with a couple of halfchances but Deegan missed the target and Moore saved from Leitch-Smith following a mistake at the back. But United were quickly back in the ascendency. Sharp

shot wide and the home side had two penalty appeals turned down...but not the third! On 20 minutes, Lafferty latched on to a one-two with Done before falling under a challenge from O’Brien - referee Deadman waited but pointed to the spot and sent off the Shrews midfielder. However, after a delay, Sharp’s penalty was pushed over the crossbar by Halstead. A second Blades goal, though, was just a matter of minutes away. Coutts delivered a deep corner from the left, an unmarked Freeman headed back into the danger area and SCOUGALL poked home from close range.

Blades boss Chris Wilder was happy with Saturday’s victory over nine-man Shrewsbury Town at Bramall Lane, but ‘frustrated’ his side didn’t win more convincingly. Billy Sharp and Stefan Scougall netted the first-half goals that were enough to see United move into the automatic promotion places for the first time this term and despite seeing Louis Dodds net a consolation for the visitors, who had Jim O’Brien and Abu

Ogogo sent off in the first-half, the Blades boss was keen to focus on the positives. He remarked: “We’ve moved up to second in the table, that says it all to me, I will never turn my nose up at a win. “We have to take care of our own business and we are doing so, before this game, Shrewsbury had won three on the spin and have been doing well under Paul (Hurst). “Our punters have gone home happy I hope with another three points in the bag and

all we can keep doing is focus on the next game, then the next one. “It’s a strange old game and we’re frustrated that we didn’t score more goals, but that’s all because we did win the game.” The success over the Shrews came at something of a cost though with three players coming off injured and Wilder admits the trio could all miss the midweek clash against Bury. He added: “It wasn’t a good day on the injury

WILDER’S REACTION

Shrewsbury were under the cosh. Lancashire cut out a ball which would have put Sharp in the clear and two shots from Coutts were close. On 39 minutes, the Blades went mightily close again but El-Abd stopped the ball on the line following Scougall’s effort after Lafferty had headed down a Sharp cross. There was more drama before the half-time whistle. In injury-time, Ogogo became the second Shrews player to be shown a red card following a lunge at Coutts in midfield. Coutts was obviously feeling the effects of the challenge as he did not re-appear for the second half - O’Connell was the replacement; Basham stepped into midfield and had an early header saved by Halstead. Sharp had a shot

saved and Done was crowded out by El-Abd as United continued to pour forward. However, on the hour, Freeman became the third Blade to leave the field injured and soon after Done picked up a knock, although he carried on, to keep up the two-man numerical advantage. Scougall and Sharp failed to get enough on a Chapman cross on 67 minutes and Halstead was called upon to make routine saves from Chapman and Scougall. The Blades were not making the most of their possession and territorial advantage and were stung in a rare Shrews attack. On 72 minutes, Ebanks-Blake won a throw and from a subsequent Brown cross, DODDS volleyed home. United were quickly back on the attack. Chapman headed

over a Sharp cross and Halstead made two impressive saves inside 60 seconds firstly from Done, tipping around a post, and then Sharp’s header from Fleck’s cross. On 87 minutes, a deflected Lafferty cross saw Sharp’s back header beat Halstead but the ball struck a post, hit Brown and dribbled wide for a corner. Three minutes of added time saw the Blades professionally keep possession and there was one more chance of note, Ebanks-Landell volleyed against Lancashire, before the final whistle signalled another victory.

front, but we’ll have to assess each individual ahead of Tuesday. “Duffy’s struggling with his calf, Freeman took a heavy impact on his back and Couttsy leg was a mess following the poor tackle that led to the second red card. “If none of them make it we have a squad to look after the situation and it gives opportunities to others, but it would be a shame as all three have been in fine form.”

SHARP ON THE HUNT WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH

Just over two months ago, a 2-1 defeat away at Millwall left the Blades bottom of League One after four games. Many fans, and indeed the players, might not have believed you if you said the Blades would be 2nd before the end of November as the final whistle blew at The Den that evening. Chris Wilder’s men have a game in hand on their promotion rivals, as the remarkable turnaround continues to build momentum. Regardless of this, captain Billy Sharp is not willing to

accept 2nd place for his childhood team. Speaking this week to sufc.co.uk, Sharp said: “It’s time to hunt the next team down, which is obviously Scunthorpe.” The Blades have a platform to chase the early leaders Scunthorpe, as four of the next six league games take place at Bramall Lane. Unlike in previous seasons, where countless managers proposed that the squad needed to make the Lane a fortress and failed, Wilder’s side is delivering on the promise to improve home form. One

loss in eight league home games, a stat taken at the time of writing on the eve of the Bury fixture at the Lane, is testament

to the improvement at Sheffield United. On the Blades’ much improved home form, Sharp said: “We’ve won five or six on

the spin at home, so we need to keep that going.” Sharp will not only have eyes to steal the top spot off Scunthorpe, the captain’s impressive goal form means he is rapidly closing down

on current top goal scorer, Josh Morris. Scunthorpe’s Morris currently has 14, whereas the Blades’ number 10 is on 12, with hopefully more to come.

“WE HAVE TO KILL GAMES” - CARLOS Carlos Carvalhal was happy with his side’s performance following the Owls’ 1-1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage, but felt they deserved to win. Wednesday took an early lead when a sublime passing move involving Barry Bannan and Gary Hooper was finished off by Fernando Forestieri. It looked as though the

Owls would come away with all three points, but after mounting pressure late in the game the home side grabbed an equaliser through Scott Malone in the last minute. Carvalhal said: “The important thing today for us was the 3,900 fans that travel with us for this game, they were important for us. “I am not happy with the

result because I think we deserved more, but I am very happy with our performance. “We played with personality and created chances. “Fulham are a good team and I think we showed everyone in this stadium that we are a very tough opponent. “I don’t remember our goalkeeper or defence having any real problems

during the match.” The head coach added: “I am told the Fulham coach says we were the better side and I think that also. “Our goalkeeper did not have too much defending to do and we created more of the chances. “But we have to kill games when we get the chance and that was the difference today.”

A LOT OF POSITIVES Owls skipper Glenn Loovens says Wednesday can take a lot of positives from the draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday. Wednesday led until late in the contest through Fernando Forestieri but were pegged back right at the last. Though disappointed to leave the capital with just one point, Loovens believes Wednesday can take plenty from the game and said: “We can take a lot of positives, especially from the first half. I thought we were excellent, gave nothing

away and created a lot of chances. “We were disappointed not to score a second and from there you know you’re in for a difficult second half. “Going forward and defensively we were excellent as a group in the first half. “The manager wanted his players to stand up and perform and I think on that side of things, we can take a lot of positives out of the game and look forward to the next one.” The Cottagers went into Saturday’s clash in good form with back to back wins, including an

impressive 5-0 triumph over Huddersfield on home soil. Loovens feels the Owls stood up to the task and says the group will now look to build on that point and performance heading to Wolves this weekend. “They were playing

at home and we knew it would be tough and that they would try everything to get back in the game,” he added. “We didn’t keep the ball as well in the second half but like I said there are a lot of positives to take out of this game and now we look forward.”
