ENGLAND’S SECOND FA FOOTBALL HUB OPENS AT SHEFFIELD SPORTS CENTRE Our city is known as the birthplace of football. And that sporting heritage was built upon again last weekend with the opening of England’s second Parklife grassroots football hub. New facilities at St George’s Park Thorncliffe, in High Green, are part of The FA’s scheme to address poor facilities in grassroots football and an example of its commitment to football for all – through investment in pitches, facilities and participation programmes. Councillor Mary Lea,

Sheffield City Council’s cabinet member for Culture, Sport and Leisure said: “This is a very exciting time for football in Sheffield and we are proud to be leading the way on this national scheme with The FA. “With hubs opening across the city we now have top class facilities at grassroots level and this will make a huge difference in our local communities, allowing all those who want to play with the opportunities to do so. “In terms of sports participation, community

activity and the associated health benefits, it’s a win for Sheffield.” This comes after the country’s first Parklife site opened at Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre in the south of Sheffield earlier this year. Construction has also begun on the third national football hub at Westfield, in the south east of the city. The Parklife hubs at Graves and Thorncliffe will host league matches and training for up to five resident partner clubs, played on state-of-the-art 3G artificial grass pitches – which will combat any

disruption caused by frozen and waterlogged surfaces during the winter. Typically, a wellmaintained natural turf pitch can offer up to eight playing hours of football a week. However, artificial grass pitches can easily accommodate double that volume on a daily basis, this increasing the number of playing opportunities. The centres at both Thorncliffe and Graves are fully accessible and are available for use. Leisure facilities operator Pulse will be responsible for day-to-day operation. Mark Coulson, Parklife

programme manager at The FA, said: “Parklife marks the start of The FA’s vision to transform the way grassroots football is played in England. “Here in Sheffield, and as the programme rolls out nationally, we hope to see the end of poor pitches, woefully inadequate changing facilities and a battle against the elements to get fixtures completed over the winter. “Parklife promises football for all and we are committed to giving every child that wants to play access to a qualified coach, whilst supporting referee and volunteer recruitment and development to ensure a high quality playing experience.”

The impulse to go a little bit beyond your normal budget can be quite strong this week for you, and particularly as there can be part of you that almost feels compelled to step beyond the boundaries that you set yourself in the past. Even so, do keep one foot on terra-firma Taurus. Call for more…

VIEWS ON CITY STOP SMOKING STRATEGY A public consultation has been announced to gather people’s views on Sheffield’s future approach to cutting the number of people who smoke. The vision for the Tobacco Control Strategy, which will run from 2017 to 2022, is to create a smoke-free city where people live longer and healthier lives, where children think smoking is unusual, and where young people don’t take up smoking in the first place. At present, while good progress is being made on tackling tobacco, there are still around 79,200 people who smoke in Sheffield – and tobacco kills approximately 16 people a week in the city. The World Health Organisation recommends that a comprehensive programme of tobacco control is adopted in order to effectively reduce the number of smokers. This includes supporting smokers to quit, preventing children from starting to smoke in the first place, increasing the awareness of the dangers of smoking, removing cheap and illicit tobacco from our communities and extending smokefree environments to protect people from the harm caused by second-hand smoke.

Councillor Mary Lea said: “Smoking is still the biggest killer, the biggest burden to public health and a major cause of health inequalities. We want to reduce smoking prevalence in line with other world leaders in this area. Places such as New York, California and Australia, for example, have implemented extensive tobacco control programmes and as a result have seen impressive reductions in their smoking prevalence compared to England. In order to do this we need to build on what is already in place and fund a wide-ranging tobacco control programme that focuses on prevention, policy measures and quitting. We have reviewed what is needed locally, as well as the evidence as to what really works when it comes to helping people to stop smoking – and preventing them from starting in the first place. Unfortunately, since 2015 there have been reductions in the level of funding available for local authorities to spend on public health. Therefore we are unable to fund everything to the level we would like, and need to prioritise interventions that will deliver the largest public health benefit.”

In Sheffield the budget for tobacco control is £1.1m and, currently, 60 per cent of this budget funds stop smoking services and 40 per cent funds wider tobacco control work. The city council is proposing to move £220,000 from stop smoking services into prevention work. This would involve working with all secondary schools in the city as well as some primary schools, increasing the number of outdoor smoke-free sites and events, and increasing the investment in communication and media campaigns targeting those who find it the most difficult to quit. Sheffield City Council is asking for people’s views and opinions so that responses can inform the future shape of the strategy. The consultation will go live tomorrow and run for six weeks, closing on 2 January 2017. To have your say, visit the council’s online consultation hub at: https://sheffield.citizenspace.com/

MAYOR’S FROZEN FUNDRAISER DANCING FOR FITNESS

It’s more than three decades since Torvill and Dean became the highest scoring figure skaters of all time, with their 1984 Olympic performance to Ravel’s Bolero. And now the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox, and her husband Councillor Terry Fox, are set to perform their very own – and very “Yorkshire” version of the ice dance to raise money for charity. The pair first pulled on their ice skates in September, with no skating experience whatsoever, so are nervous about performing in front of the crowds at iceSheffield as part of the Hollywood on Ice show, taking place on Friday 9, Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December. The Mayor: “I hadn’t been on the ice since I was a child, so it was a bit nerve-

wracking to try it again after all these years. During our first few rehearsals, we both had to hold onto the sides. But gradually, we started getting better, and the 6am rehearsals out at iceSheffield started paying off. As well as getting better at skating, both Terry and I are also getting fitter as a result of the extra exercise. I really would encourage anyone who perhaps hasn’t been skating for years and years, like us, to give it a go again. It’s great fun and a fantastic way to get fit.” The couple will be performing their routine in support of the Lord Mayor’s four chosen charities – St Luke’s Hospice, Support Dogs, Sparkle – which supports children with autism – and the Soldier’s Charity.

COCKTAILS, FOOD AND ENCHANTMENT AT THE BOTANIST IN LEOPOLD SQUARE Words & Pics by David Platts

The latest addition to Sheffield’s Leopold Square complex sees cocktail, craft beer, Deli and BBQ specialist The Botanist open the latest of its chain of restaurants. Housed within the old Sheffield City Grammar school complex The Botanist occupies three levels, with a cocktail bar situated on the ground floor in keeping with Leopold Square’s vibrant yet highly stylish nightlife and the rather grand setting of the old school hall on the upper level providing a magical setting. The upstairs (and I mean upstairs, three double flights) dining area has an enchanting feel, a grand period hall that could have been abandoned at the turn of last century and colonised by a vast network of spectacular flora and fauna that intertwines through the original high beams and classic Victorian fixtures and fittings. Providing an atmosphere somewhere between Hogwarts and Alice in Wonderland which, although quite large, still has a cosy and private feel once seated nestled amongst vines and greenery. The menu combines traditional classics with an artisan twist and the more exotic, with dishes ranging from Homemade Scotch Eggs to Malaysian Curry. With us wanting to sample as wide a range as we could within our visit we opted for The

Botanist Deli Board as a starter, a fully customisable selection of over 20 tasting dishes covering most of The Botanist’s menu. Our selection was beautifully presented on a tasting board including miniature wheelbarrow of homemade piccalilli in keeping with the enchanted garden theme. We concentrated on selecting from the ‘Homemade Favourites’ which offered the more interesting choices with the Homemade Scotch Egg, Chilli Winter Slaw, Pomegranate Couscous and homemade pickled veg complimented with a selection of pastries, meats and cheeses. All were delivered with ample portions for two people to get a proper taste of each item that all delivered on quality and taste. I’d have happily ordered another Deli Board for my main meal however there was a menu item I had seen being delivered to other tables around us that had enticed me from afar. The Botanist’s menu boasts of their ‘Famous Hanging Kebabs’, a strange site being transported around the old school hall these consist of a foot (the measurement, not the appendage) of meat dangling pendulum like over a plate of fries from a steel gallows. I decided to order the Salt & Pepper Pork but there are other enticing variations including Jerk Salmon and Lamb Kofta available. The configuration of the kebab provides

a practical as well as aesthetic use with a pot of Sweet Chilli and Ginger situated on the top slowly drizzling down pieces of succulent meat below. My girlfriend opted for a more homely dish of Chicken & Chorizo Pie served with lashings of mash and peas. I’d happily give my opinion but I was denied a sample. However judging by the noises emanating from across the table and the speed the plate was emptied I assume it tasted as good as it looked. Although the food is enough of a draw to entice you into The Botanist they are famed in their other locations for their vast range of quality cocktails and craft beers. I seem to have drawn the short straw with this visit, as alongside having to write up this review I was also saddled with driving duties for the night. So I could only sit salivating and mumbling to myself whilst I browsed The Botanist’s extensive range of Craft and World Beers all set out as a whimsical tale with tasting notes and back stories. My partner however jumped head first into their Cocktail selection that had a dizzying array of concoctions ranging from classics with a twist including Apricot & Mint Daiquiris and Plum & Thai Basil Mojitos to the more extravagant Mini Cocktail & Beer Tasting Boards and Artisan Watering Cans filled to the brim with Rum, Cherry Syrup and

Thyme. The menu features Long Cocktails, Shorts, Flutes, a Gin List, Martinis, Classics amongst others and with the array of colours and fanciful potions being constantly ferried up and down the venue they all seem to be going down well with The Botanist’s clientele. Our evening was complimented by a laidback musical trio who took up residency in the halls central pagoda providing a perfect soundtrack of modern numbers with a lounge-bar jazz feeling. Although everything had been more or less perfect the finishing touch was the level of service. I’ve never actually seen

Everyone at The Mercury would like to send a huge congratulations to regular face on stages around the region and landlady of The New Anglers at Handsworth Jade Hewitt, who recently celebrated the arrival Baby Elijah with her partner Richard.

SLEEPING BEAUTY FALLS UNDER A FESTIVE SPELL IN HIGH GREEN Quality never goes out of fashion, so the saying goes, and this year the High Green Musical Theatre Group are relying on a top notch story for their festive pantomime. Sleeping Beauty is a timehonoured classic and this year’s cast will be putting their own spin on the story of true love triumphing over evil. Like all good pantomimes, there will be thrills and spills along the way, the Princess Aurora locked in a century of sleep with Prince Christian trying to use his charms to unlock the spell which put her there. The audience will be invited to put their energies into supporting the good-guy and undermining the evil fairy Malef, responsible for setting up the whole sorry situation. This year the starring roles are taken by Sophie White playing Princess Aurora and Charlotte Hunt playing Princess Christian. This will be Sophie Whites Debut with the group. She said: “I’m delighted to be playing this role. It will be just as much fun for the cast as the audience and we’re all confident everyone who comes along will have a great time.” Prince Christian, otherwise known as Charlotte Hunt, has been with the group for several years

and sharp-eyed members of the audience may remember her from the role of Katie Brown from the group’s last production Calamity Jane. She said: “Everyone knows the Sleeping Beauty story but we’ve made this version our own and anyone who comes along should expect some fun. “It’s ideal for families and we hope people will take the chance to introduce younger children to the experience of live entertainment. Television and cinema just can’t match it.” The group was able to rope in United Carpets, Woodfloor & Beds in the Old Vogue Cinema, Barnsley Road, Sheffield to

help out with the photo-shoot for the panto and seen here are Sophie White, Laura Hall, Angela Kettlewell and Chloe Beech The show takes place as normal at the EPPiC Theatre in Well Lane, Ecclesfield, from Monday December 12 to Saturday December 17. Tickets are on sale now from the Box Office 01142403839. The theatre group is now in its 68th year and normally puts on 2 shows a year. It has been organising pantomimes since 1980 and relies on ticket sales to help meet the costs of running the theatre, with all cast members and those in backstage roles acting as volunteers.

As part of a separate set of plans announced by the Department of Transport earlier this year, new legislation is being drafted which doubles the punishment for using a handheld mobile phone when behind the wheel.

The key proposals include: • Increasing the maximum sentence for causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs from 14 years to life • Increasing the maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving from 14 years to life • Increasing minimum driving bans for those convicted of causing death • Creating a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving, with a maximum sentence of three years

for causing death by dangerous driving was just under four years (45.8) months. Ministry of Justice (MoJ) figures show that in total, 122 people were sentenced for this offence, with a further 21 convicted of drink or drugrelated incidents leading to death. Sam Gyimah, Justice Minister said on unveiling the proposals that “killer drivers ruin lives.” “Their actions cause immeasurable pain to families, who must endure tragic, unnecessary losses,” she added. “While impossible to compensate for the death of a loved one, we are determined to make sure the punishment fits the crime. “My message is clear – if you drive dangerously and kill on our roads, you could face a life sentence.” A MoJ consultation on the plans will run until February 2017.

Tougher penalties – including full life terms in prison – are among latest Government proposals for dealing with dangerous drivers who kill behind the wheel. The new crackdown would target those who cause loss of life through illegalities such as mobile phone use, street racing and speeding. These tougher penalties come after plans last month were announced for drivers caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel would no longer be able to take a course to avoid getting points on their licence. In the new proposals drivers convicted of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs would also face the most stringent of sentences. Currently, those responsible for the most serious of road offences can receive maximum jail terms of 14 years. Ministers hope that, if passed, the new laws would lead to an increase in the heaviest punishments handed down to dangerous offenders. In 2015, the average custodial sentence given

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve been lost in thought this week, debating whether to bother getting involved, but I’ve got an opinion too, so here goes… Perch anglers, hold your fish properly. There, that’s it, I’ve said it. I’m very concerned at the number of pictures I’m seeing, of fish big and small, held with the ridiculously stupid ‘lip grip’. Why do it? Why put any undue strain on your capture? What’s wrong with properly supporting the fish? Before you reply with “Well you’ve just put a hook in it, so don’t get all precious”, I put hooks in roach, carp, chub and barbel, but I wouldn’t hold them by the lip either. It’s bloody madness. I’ve seen the pictures from over the pond, of scantily clad maidens, and bearded mid-westerners holding small and large mouth bass up for the camera, but that’s over there, and this is over here. We practice catch and release, they catch for the pot, and I thought we had a little more respect for our quarry? For those anglers who consider that holding them up with a thumb in the mouth, and that the rest of the body supported only by crooking a finger beneath the perch’s chin is okay, then you’re wrong. Sorry, but there it is. It makes you look careless and egotistical, as though the picture is more important than fish welfare, and ergo, makes the rest of the angling community look bad, as though we don’t care, but the fact is that most of us do. I’ve heard all sorts of arguments, “It’s only for a few seconds” or “It makes the dorsal stick up”, but so what? If I held you up by

your wrists, with your arms locked behind your back, it would probably make your dorsal fin stick up too, and even if I did it only for a few seconds, say from a meat hook, it would still hurt, and very probably cause damage, which is why I wouldn’t do it. Guess what, I’m not an expert in human physiology, but I know it would hurt, and the same is true of fish, you can spout all you like, but the hard facts are that you don’t know for certain, so why risk it? I’m sure you’ve seen the image showing the physiologically safe angles to hold fish, which is often posted on social media to contravene the “It’s okay brigade” so take note. The truth is, I know there are better ways to hold a fish up, (as do those who practice this farcical grip) so why try and justify it for the sake of a picture, or to give the misguided impression of being ‘perchy’ to their peers? Get a grip…. properly, I’ll have far more time for you as an angler when you do… The big freeze has hit hard. I visited a local water in search of pike, and found myself alone on the banks. The pool was mirrorlike, the water glassy calm, so I set up two legered deadbaits, and cast the first one out towards the centre of the pool… DONK! My roach sat in a few millimetres of water, the lead next to it, supported by a crust of ice, on which a thin veneer of melt water rested! The whole pond was frozen solid (except for the bit I’d dipped my net in to test) and I couldn’t get a bait in anywhere! I’m not one for breaking ice, I think it upsets the fish too much, and besides, leaning out over the water with a pole or similar offers a real possibility of slipping into the bitterly cold depths, so I packed up sheepishly, before anyone saw me, and walked back to the van. On the way, I

passed a second pool, and spotted an ice free patch of a few yards square next to an inflow, so dropped a bait in the edge and sat back to wait. An hour later, and a few shrill chirps of the alarm saw the drop off indicator rise, then bounce a few times as the rod tip pulled round… I lifted the rod, and set the hooks into a tiny pike not much bigger than the bait! No matter, it was a fish, and on a bitingly cold day in which bites were at a premium! I also revisited the canal this week, met up with likeminded anglers from a local Facebook lure group, (who hold their perch properly) and had a happy hour or two in good company. Sadly, after an influx of icy water, the fishing wasn’t brilliant, but

it was nice to put names to faces, and we did manage a few fish between us. It was enlightening to learn from others, find out which were the ‘hot’ lures, which retrieve worked best, and share some good spots so hopefully we can all catch more! As I usually (unsociably) fish alone, it was a nice change to fish with others…maybe I should do it more often, and get back to the days of my childhood, when I fished with Steve, Damon, and Malc; happy times indeed, when fishing was about fun, not a single picture was taken, and Facebook didn’t exist to show daft anglers holding fish in such a daft manner! Tight lines!

LOCAL FOOTBALL

on goal difference, following a 2-1 win over Davy FC. Grimethorpe Sports are into sixth place with a 4-2 away win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Grimethorpe have won seven of their nine league games, with 50 goals to their name already this term. Silkstone United claimed their first three points since October 15th, as they beat Millmoor Juniors Reserves 3-0 at Grange Park.

with Michael Clarke

The football took a backseat prior to kick-off this weekend, as all games were preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the Colombian air accident last Monday that claimed the lives of 71 people, including players/ officials of Chapecoense FC of Brazil, journalists and airline staff. The main event this weekend this weekend came in the form of the League Cup Quarter-Finals, but there were also 22 league games on a hectic December fixture list. League Cup Quarter-Finals As ever with cup competitions, the only this to be expected is the unexpected. The unexpected on League Cup Quarter-Final was in evidence at the Phoenix Sports Club. After 90 minutes the tie between Division One’s Brinsworth Whitehill and AFC Penistone Church was all-square at 4-4. The drama continued in the extra-time period with Brinsworth booking their place in the SemiFinals with a 6-4 victory. Oliver Perry starred for Brinsworth scoring three times. Premier Division leaders Swallownest FC had little problems seeing-off Euroglaze FC of the Division Two North 6-1 at Swallownest Miners Welfare Ground. Sheffield Medics are in their maiden season in the County Senior League Division Two South. They currently sit just above mid-table, but they have a League Cup Semi-Final to look forward to after a 3-1 win over Division One leaders Wickersley FC. The only all-Premier Division tie came at Middlecliffe Lane, where Houghton Main fell 4-1 to Athersley Recreation Reserves. The two sides only met last weekend in the league, when they shared a 2-2 draw. Premier Division Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves moved into second position in the Premier Division table, with a 3-0 away win over Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Stocksbridge sit just six points off the lead at the halfway stage. Wombwell Main climbed out of the bottom three with a vital 3-1 win over second bottom Denaby United. The win is Wombwell’s first since October 22nd. North Gawber Colliery beat Denaby Main 4-0 at Woolley Miners Welfare, with goals from Carl Woodhead (2), Carey Welford and Matt Blakey. North Gawber have kept four clean-sheets in their last six games, a run that sees them into fifth place. Ryan Doxey scored six times to help Swinton Athletic to a 6-3 home win over Jubilee Sports and help fire them to their fifth consecutive victory in the process. Division One With the top two in League Cup action, the chasing pack had a chance to cut their deficit. The previously third and fourth placed teams Oughtibridge WMFC and AFC Dronfield both lost. Oughtibridge were beaten 2-1 at home by Caribbean Sports, whilst Dronfield were beaten 2-1 by Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 at Chaucer School. Ecclesfield move into third position with their win, four points off the pace with three games spare. Just two points separate Ecclesfield from now eighth placed Dronfield. Goals from Andy Taylor, Chris Howard, Terrance Balmer and Aaron Watts fired Sheffield Bankers to an exciting 4-3 away win over High Green Villa. The Bankers sit in fourth place in the standings. South Kirkby Colliery are below the Bankers only

Division Two North League leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels Development squad were once again victorious. This time they were 2-1 winners over FC Graceholme at the Look Local Stadium. An Aaron Brotherton hat-trick inspired second placed Dodworth Miners Welfare to a 9-0 win over Bawtry Town. Just six points separate the top two, with Stocksbridge having played two more games. Hepworth United beat Working Wonders 3-2 at Leeds Road Playing Field to move them above FC Graceholme and into third position. Division Two South Kiveton Park kept up their good form, with a 2-0 away win over Renishaw Rangers thanks to goals from Matt Plant and Anthony Bayou. The day got better for with second placed Swinton Athletic Reserves getting leapfrogged by New Bohemians, after losing to them 2-0 at Swinton Miners Welfare. Kiveton lead at the top now sits at three points, with three games in hand off their two nearest rivals. Davy FC Reserves were in fine form, as they beat Sheffield Bankers Reserves 5-1 at Hillsborough College. Davy sit in fourth place, but remarkably have a -1 goal difference. Caribbean Sports Reserves were also 5-1 winners, as they beat Maltby Main Reserves away from home. Caribbean have won their last three games, only conceding once in the process. AFC Dronfield Reserves ended a run of eight games without a win in style, with a 9-2 win over Millmoor Juniors Development Squad at Gosforth Playing Fields. I GAVE IT EVERYTHING, SAYS WARNEY Rotherham United interim boss Paul Warne insists he gave everything he could to help his side to victory in a game that ultimately saw them defeated 2-1 at the hands of Burton Albion. The popular fitness coach was charged with leading the Millers into battle at the Pirelli Stadium following the departure of Kenny Jackett at the beginning of the week, but saw his side thwarted by goals from Jackson Irvine and Matty Palmer, with Tom Adeyemi firing a consolation late on. Warney admitted that he had convinced himself that he had done enough in the preparation for the game against the Brewers that they could record victory and says he was disappointed not to send the travelling supporters home with something to smile about. “I honestly believed that today we would win,” he explained after the match. “I’ve tried to put that into the lads all week, especially today and they were desperate to win for themselves and for me. “When I walked off the pitch I had players come up to me and apologise and look visibly devastated, but nobody is more devastated than me because I would have loved to have won for the fans that came, my family, myself and for the lads. “I just thought that today would be that day.” “I gave everything I could for the team to win today and it wasn’t enough, which is hard to take. I have no regrets and I can look myself in the mirror. I tried to win a game of football, I

I did every single thing I could. “I’m disappointed that we didn’t give the fans something.” The caretaker boss continued to explain that he was impressed with the way Nigel Clough’s side set up and added that he deployed on loan Chelsea attacker behind Danny Ward to try and give his side some joy going forward. “The way we set up we tried to get Izzy Brown between the lines and running at the back three. I quite like the way they play to be honest and if it was my team in pre-season, I’d probably set up the same way. “That 3-5-2 works really well and it’s hard to break down but we started the game really well.

Championship games have very few chances in them and I don’t think they had more chances in the game than us to be fair.” The Millers forged some good opportunities early on with Jon Taylor and Brown threatening the hosts’ goal, but admitted that the unforgiving nature of the division meant those misses were costly. “The sad reality is that we didn’t take our chances,” Warne continued. “We had a couple of one-on-ones in the first half and we worked hard to get into those situations but we didn’t take them, which obviously I wasn’t best pleased with. “At half time I went in and told them what I thought and said I wanted them to have more

We are aware of a number of incidents that a minority of our supporters were involved in at Burton on Saturday which are currently under investigation. We are working closely with Burton Albion FC and the Police to identify these individuals and action will be taken. The forward’s decisive goal against Stevenage on Saturday sent Rovers to the top of the Sky Bet League Two table. Darren Ferguson named an unchanged side from the game that saw Rovers come from behind to beat Leyton Orient by three goals to one. And he was rewarded with Rovers going top for the first time this season after edging out the Hertfordshire side 4-3. Marquis, who has already notched 11 league goals so far in this campaign, insisted the team can still get better. “Myself, the manager and a lot of the players in the changing room just want to improve, we here and we’re playing for a team that is top of

KNILL’S BOLTON CUP VERDICT 2016/17 Alan Knill felt the Blades had enough of Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers to get a positive result, but admitted the home side were better at both ends of the pitch. Despite second-half goals from Paul Coutts and Jack O’Connell, United were undone 3-2 in Lancashire, as the Trotters advanced to Monday’s third round draw.

Reflecting on the loss at the Macron Stadium, Chris Wilder’s number two remarked: “It’s very disappointing, especially when you’ve had enough of the game to get a result, but unfortunately it is what happens in both boxes that really counts. “They were ruthless, we created chances to score more goals and didn’t take them, that’s ultimately why we’ve

lost the game. “We don’t want to be the best team but lose the game, it was very similar to Tuesday against Walsall, when we should have won comfortably.” Knill added: “We were very good in the middle of the park, we moved the ball round excellently at times, but it is about keeping it out of your goal and putting it in theirs and we haven’t been good enough at that. “We are disappointed

with the goals we conceded. The first one is a set-piece and we knew how strong the opposition are from them, the second one straight after half-time gives us a mountain to climb and the third one is too easy. “We did show some fight, but you can’t create the number of chances we are creating and not make them count.”

JUST REWARDS FOR WEDNESDAY The Owls got their just rewards from a dramatic clash with Preston at Hillsborough on Saturday, said head coach Carlos Carvalhal. The ten-man hosts beat the nine-man visitors by the odd goal in three and Carvalhal was pleased with the maximum haul. He said: “We deserved to win this game, for sure. In the pre-match,

I said Preston are a tough team to beat, they play very compact and are very organised. “They won at Norwich, they drew with Brighton so we knew we must play well to win this game. “We started well and got the goal and I have to say, the attitude of the players was fantastic as we picked up three separate injuries. “We lose Ross Wallace,

Glenn Loovens and Will Buckley and we had to see the character of the team to win the game. “It was a difficult game and we deserved to win.” On the three red cards that punctuated a hard-fought contest, Carvalhal said: “I did not see the incident with Fernando so I cannot really say but I am told the decision was correct.

“I saw what happened with the two Preston players and, of course, this helped us because it meant the game was very close to being over. “The most important thing is the points, which we have. We must wait for the reports from the doctor but we have no issues because we have a very good squad and players who can come into the positions if necessary.”

LEES EXPECTS TOUGH ROYALS TRIP Tom Lees was delighted to make a return to the top six over the weekend after a 2-1 victory over Preston. To maintain that position, the Owls face a big test on Saturday with a trip to third-placed Reading. In a unique round of Championship action, the top six – as things stand – are set to go head to head with Brighton hosting Leeds and Birmingham travelling to Newcastle. While the Owls made it back to back wins last time out, the Royals suffered a heavy defeat at Craven Cottage, going down 5-0 to Fulham and

Lees expects a strong reaction from them, explaining: “It will be tough, it will probably the case that they’ll expect a massive reaction from themselves at home and put right what went wrong at the weekend. “You know what it’s like when you get beaten like that, you just want to get back out there and put it right and that’s what we’ll have to deal with.” He added: “But we’re in the top six and as long as you’re in and around there, then anything can happen and that’s where we want to be now.”
