SHEFFIELD SETS ITS SIGHTS ON MAJOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITY CENTRE AS HUB OF THE OUTDOOR CITY Plans to create an outdoor adventure experience that will be the ‘jewel in the crown’ of The Outdoor City were announced last week. Sheffield City Council wants to attract a developer to transform a site at Parkwood Springs into a nationallysignificant attraction which will cement Sheffield’s reputation as The Outdoor City – the UK’s leading destination for people seeking outdoor adventure, city culture and rural escapes.
In a well-connected part of North-West Sheffield, just one mile from the city centre and close to the flourishing real ale scene at Kelham Island, there is potential to bring thousands more visitors into the city, as well as galvanizing the regeneration of the wider area. An initial study indicates this is a viable commercial opportunity, and the Council is now aiming to test the market by asking investors and developers to put forward ideas for the
wider Parkwood Springs area that will transform it into an urban country park of regional and national importance. A mountain biking trail centre, urban bike park or national snow sports centre could be on the cards, or a combination of different adventure activities, depending on market interest. The former ski village site sits within the wider open space of Parkwood Springs, which has seen major improvements over recent years, thanks to work between the
Council, the Friends of Parkwood Springs group and other partners. New mountain bike trails and a dual slalom now attract around 10,000 visits a year – but there is potential for much more. The final detailed development proposals will be determined when the council appoints a preferred bidder for the site. Neill Schofield, chair of the Friends of Parkwood Springs, said: “Lots of people from Sheffield and beyond really
enjoyed the old Sheffield Ski Village. What we’d like to see now is the site being used again for people to enjoy, as part of our country park in the city.” The Council is seeking expressions of interest by 12noon on Friday 7 April 2017 and will then invite a preferred bidder to purchase a long lease with the intention of developing, financing and operating Parkwood. To access the full development brief, go to the Sheffield City Council website.

You think that shops prepare early for Christmas! Well my Supermarket has already got Birthday cake in and that’s not for another 7 months! Did you hear about the man that was killed when a display of vitamins and herbal extracts fell on him? Police say he died of natural causes. Ordered some Christmas presents online the other day and used my donor card instead of my debit card. Cost me an arm and a leg. My wife said she’s leaving me because I can’t do anything right when it comes to housework. Gutted, it took me ages to mop the carpet. I just read “100 things to do before you die” I was quite surprised to see that “shout for help” wasn’t in there! I opened the door last night to carol singers & said “Do you know Silent Night?” “Yes” they replied “Well sod off then because I want one!”
What’s white and can’t climb trees? A Fridge.

That change of scene you have yearned for may or may not be possible this week, but little will stop you from preparing the way for the New Year, when you can be very much focused on expanding your horizons. However, if you are travelling, just factor in a Plan B. Call for more...
The run up to Christmas sees the Sun power into your sector of everyday communications, perfect for the partying to come. It’s going to be important to work hard at the arrangements because there could be some mixed signals or even mix-ups when it comes to the finer details. Call for more...
Venus is set to make a stunning link to Jupiter, and this can lead to a very special connection with one person. However, longer term relationships may be more complex. Politics can be rife, and at a time of year when we all want things to be peaceful, patience can be a virtue. Call for more...
A wonderful trio of planets link beautifully with the gentle and alluring energies of Venus. And all this can create a tremendous sense of bonhomie. However, if you’re waiting for a vital payment, do be persistent and refuse to be fobbed off with feeble excuses. Call for more news and advice...
Mercury moves into a retrograde motion in your sector of relationships. This cautions you not to take any situation or any person too much for granted. Equally, it’s an opportunity to reach out to someone you have not been in touch with for some while Cancer. Call for more astral advice...
The Sun Storms back into your sign after an eleven month hiatus. He also forges a very powerful link to Mars, and this combination can strengthen your sense of purpose, and also give you much more confidence around conversations or interactions with others you encounter. Call for more...
More than ever this year you can find yourself wanting to delegate, and let someone else take more of the strain. There is going to be something of a balance that you want to achieve, and this means bringing a much lighter, more playful vibe to bear. Yule itself though, could be poignant. Call for more...
Although there is a big emphasis on the most gentle part of your situation, you can still sparkle socially. With the planet of attraction forging a gorgeous link to Jupiter, there may be more than one occasion this week, when people are drawn to the very unique vibe that you emanate. Call for more...
Two big planetary changes occur at the very start of this week, and one of them involves your guiding light of Mercury. This is asking us all to be as flexible as possible this week, and especially about the more social element where things can prove rather fluid. Call for more news and advice...
The week begins with the feisty energies of Mars finding his feet in your zodiac sign. This is great news, not least because he also angles up brilliantly with the Sun. This suggests you can take a leading role in what unfolds this week either socially, or within the family. Call for more...

The angle between your guide Venus and the fortunate Jupiter in your sign, suggests that even if you do have to count to ten around some close involvements, there can be others which prove to be much lighter, more enjoyable and one potentially even rather flirty Libra. Call for more news...

Your week begins with Mars in a new location. This can stir up a lot of emotion right throughout the week, but also if you can add this extra sensitivity to your natural leadership skills, and deploy a slice of diplomacy, you can help to keep things on an even keel. Call for more astral advice...

TEDDY BEAR EXTRAVAGANZA MAKES IT BETTER FOR SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Hundreds of teddy bear enthusiasts have come together at the Hilton Sheffield for a festive fundraising event, held in aid of The Children’s Hospital Charity. The event, which was the 6th of its kind, was held on November 20th and organised by 46 year-old Katherine Hallam, who lives in Hillsborough. Over 50 artists brought their own bespoke soft toys to sell and money was raised through a gala dinner, a teddy bear raffle and ticket sales. Katherine, a full time soft sculpture artist, has supported The Children’s Hospital Charity for several years now, and has raised around £4,000 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Her fundraising began after a friend of hers lost her ten year-old daughter, Ellie, to cancer. “Ellie was treated on the cancer ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital,” said Katherine. “It was after we went to visit her that we decided to start fundraising for The Children’s Hospital Charity. We wanted to raise money for the ward and to help them buy new resources that would help to make the children happier.” Katherine’s Great Yorkshire Teddy Bear Event is held on the third weekend in November every year and for many avid collectors, the event officially kicks off their
Christmas countdown. “People at the event are always really ready to get into the festive spirit,” said Katherine. “We play Christmas music all day and we hold a competition to see who has the most Christmassy stall – with a £50 prize for the winner to spend in the materials room. I think people are in more of a giving mood at this time of year. We always make the show feel as Christmassy as possible and that really does help us raise as much money as we can for the children’s hospital.” “It feels brilliant knowing we’ve played our part in helping Sheffield Children’s Hospital. While it’s all happening you think ‘oh my god why do I do this?’ but then you get such a great feeling from it. I can’t really put it into words. Being able to take the money to the charity, no matter how much it is, is brilliant.” When asked what her top fundraising tip would be
Katherine said, “Take something that you would do as part of your day to day life, or a hobby or something you love to do and then figure out how you can add a charity element to it. If you stay within your area of expertise you’ll raise more money. It’s all good fun!” This year The Children’s Hospital Charity are fundraising for a giant Play Tower through National Elf Service – a mass day of fundraising taking place on December 16th. The Play Tower will be a child-friendly space where patients can go for distraction and fun. Every donation given to the Christmas fund will be matched by Graham Royle of GRI Group, meaning that each contribution will be instantly doubled! To see how you can join in with National Elf Service or donate to the Christmas campaign head to www.tchc.org.uk.

HOME LIBRARY SERVICE AVAILABLE TO MORE Do you know someone who’s not able to get out much and likes to read or watch films? Sheffield City Council delivers library books, films and other items to people free of charge who are not able to get to their local library. It is looking to boost the number of people using the home library service from 750 to 1,000 users. Kathleen May, a 95 year old from Stannington and one of Sheffield’s Women of Steel, has been a library user for more than 83 years. She has used the home library service for the past 15 years and said: “The service means a lot because, from being young, I’ve always been a big reader. I’ve read all my life and would be unhappy if I didn’t get the service. When you don’t feel so good you can lose yourself a bit in a book.” Books, audio books, films, CDs and
jigsaws are delivered to people every four weeks. Hearing aid batteries can also be delivered as part of the service. Kathleen added: “I like family sagas and the ones about the race horse jockeys. You get a good selection of books in the main. There’s always the odd one – I don’t like ones that have bad language – but it’s an excellent service and they’ve always looked after me very well.” Victoria Polton, aged 73 from Bradfield, is one of the service’s longest running users who signed up in 1982. She said: “I’ve read all my life, every night of my life unless I’m very ill. I’m quite lost if I can’t read. “It’s an excellent service. They’re very good, always on time and the people who come are all friendly. It’s just lovely.” People are able to sign up to the home library service if they live in Sheffield and can’t get to their local library easily. This may be due to health issues or mobility
problems, because they’re recovering from surgery or struggle to get out because of bad weather. Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Libraries at Sheffield City Council, said: “The home library provides a really important service to lots of people in the city. It brings books but also means someone is popping in for a chat. “We know that Isolation and loneliness can be a big problem for people. I want more people to use our great home library service, so please get in touch if you or someone you know would benefit from it.” For more information call 0114 273 4277, email mobileservices.library@ sheffield.gov.uk or visit www.sheffield. gov.uk/libraries.
DOWNSIZING POPULARITY GROWS WALKING FOR HEALTH
An increasing number of older homeowners are hoping to sell their homes and downsize to a smaller one, allowing them to bank a nice sum in the process. However, many will be disappointed by how much money they actually end up with, according to new research. A lack of suitable houses for downsizers to move into means that prices are rising and the amount of cash downsizers end up with is shrinking. A survey of estate agents found that two-thirds had seen a rise in downsizing enquiries over the past year. However, 72% of agents said that older homeowners have “unrealistic expectations of the money they can make.” “Downsizing is attractive for millions of older homeowners as part of retirement planning as it appears to promise tax-free cash and is clearly driving increased enquiries for estate agents,” says Will Hale, director at Key Partnerships. Why do homeowners downsize? Downsizing can be appealing in retirement as the hope is by selling your large family home and moving somewhere smaller and cheaper you will free up cash from your property to help fund your retirement or allow you to live mortgage-free. The problem is many people are having the same idea. This means a growing number of buyers are fighting over the same type of properties, pushing up prices. Key Retirement’s research found that the

prices of bungalows, retirement homes and houses suitable for the less mobile are all being pushed up by a lack of supply. Over half of the estate agents surveyed said that there is a lack of suitable retirement properties in their area. Factor in the cost of moving – stamp duty, solicitor’s fees, removal costs – and the amount of money you are left with after you downsize could be a lot less than you expected. “Older homeowners are struggling to achieve their financial objectives with the combination of rising prices and a lack of supply meaning that downsizing simply does not add up for clients,” says Hale. “Hoping to live off the value of your home could be a ‘downsizing delusion’ for millions of people,” says Steve Webb, director of policy at Royal London. “In most of Britain, the amount of money you could free up by trading down at retirement to a smaller property would generate a very modest income. Even with today’s record house prices, very few people could fund a retirement by selling up and moving to a smaller property.”

In March 2016, the funding of the Sheffield Walking for Health scheme was cut. The scheme had 28 weekly walks across the city targeting inactive people, who are affected by cancer and those with long term health conditions. Many walks take place in areas of deprivation and the potential loss of the scheme would have been a significant blow to the people of Sheffield. With over 120 active walk leaders contributing to the delivery of the programme, an enthusiastic team of volunteers emerged willing to take the lead and coordinate the scheme across the whole city. Amazingly nearly all of the walks have agreed to work with the committee and remain part of Walking for Health. They have pooled years of personal professional experience across a range of sectors to manage data, finances, volunteers and promotions. The dedication of the team has been inspiring and thanks to their hard work, the people of Sheffield continue to have 26 weekly walks on offer across the city including referrals directly from Macmillan Cancer Support.

BEST BAR NONE HELPS ARE YOU THE NEXT PEOPLE STAY CHARGED BIG ROCK BAND? Street pastors, who help late-night city centre revellers, have been given new equipment by Sheffield City Council to help them help more people. The volunteers who are out every Friday and Saturday night now have battery-powered mobile phone charging devices to help people whose phones have run out of juice. The council bought them out of money won for its award winning Best Bar None scheme which helps promote a vibrant and safe city centre nightlife. Tricia Watts, Sheffield Street Pastor Coordinator, said: “When we are out on the streets we often meet people who cannot make contact with friends as they have no charge in their phones, and they have no contact numbers. “With phone chargers we are able to give them enough power to call friends, home or a taxi. We are thankful to BBN who have donated mobile phone chargers to each team. This will really help the vulnerable people that we meet on the streets of Sheffield at night.” Councillor Cate McDonald, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Sheffield City Council, said: “The
Street Pastor volunteers do good work in the city centre at night and I’m very pleased to support them through our award winning Best Bar None scheme.” In February 2016 Sheffield City Council’s Best Bar None scheme won awards for the ‘Best Overall Scheme’ and ‘Most Innovative Scheme’, along with £6,000 to invest back into it. Best Bar None is a national initiative supported by the Home Office and aimed at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol licensed premises.

Having secured a major Top Five hit on both sides of the Atlantic back in nineties with Crash this Coventry band have had the highs and the lows of band life. Having split up years ago it was the tragic death of original bassist Steve Dullaghan in 2009 that really got the gang back together after almost seventeen years apart. Back playing selective shows as and when, they’ve also since released a couple of albums to half decent reviews. Sadly Paul Court, Tig Williams, Raph Moore and front woman Tracy Tracy may not be playing larger venues anymore, but at least Sheffield’s Back Room at the Greystones pub was reasonable busy with die hard fans having travelled far and wide to see their heroes. Very commendably, some had done most of the tour. Opening with YATW, Stop, and Sick it’s fair to say that most tunes to me, hit single aside, may have been alien but they still managed to perform well, even though there seemed little band interaction and front woman Tracy Tracy didn’t have much to say to the followers. She did though have quite a powerful voice and stage presence is naturally a band asset as she commanded her followers to sing along. With past comparisons to Debbie Harry and Marilyn Monroe I can see why. That said the whole band did capture my attention with solid drumming and musicianship throughout. However I was surprised at the short set of just over an hour. And at £16 a ticket I was expecting a bit more from The Primitives as some songs did start to sound quite similar. They could have
Academy venues between March 5th and March 16th, 2017: Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Oxford, Sheffield, Leicester and Bournemouth. Finalists from the regional events will rock out in front of music industry professionals in April at O2 Academy Islington, London. Comment from The Pogues: “This is our opportunity to foster courageous and original music. If you have what it takes to record with us and perform at the UK’s best music venues, we’d love you to enter. This could be a wholly new and exciting shot at a music career.” To have your shot, enter online at www.academymusicgroup.com/ poguesyourshot by Monday 16th January 2017. The Pogues’ Irish Whiskey contains the legendary spirit and poetic rebelliousness of the Irish band. A robust blend of 50% Irish grain whiskey aged in bourbon oak casks and 50% single malt Irish whiskey aged in sherry casks, The Pogues whiskey has an aroma of malts and cracked nuts and an ABV of 40%, it’s not for the faint hearted. Available in 70cl bottles from online retailers including Amazon, Drinksupermarket and Master of Malt for around £30.
perhaps chucked in a couple of covers to pad things out but maybe that’s not The Primitives way. Still, they did well with cheers going out for everyone’s favourite Crash which appeared near the closing stages. Bidding us all good night they did returned to delight us with a couple more and then that was that. With hardly any roadies in sight they did soon returned, this time to pack away their kit and head homewards as all this is being done on a shoestring. And for that alone I do salute them as I can’t see many other bands in this day and age doing it this way.

ANGLER’S CORNER
Perfect. Another hour passed, and this time it was the near margin rod tip which was twitching with Clint Walker as the bait was lifted. This roach deadbait Since being asked to join the team at was much bigger, in an effort to lure one Baitbox/Pikepro, I’ve not really had much of the bigger residents, and I hadn’t really chance to actually go out and do any pike expected it to be taken. For a few seconds, fishing, so I planned a session at Derby the rod nodded, and then stopped. I left it, venue, Marketon Park. Run by The Earl and a minute later, it happened again, and the of Harrington’s AC, it’s a water where I’ve indicator rose slightly; still I left it, hoping for had success when carp and bream fishing, a full blooded take… It didn’t happen, so that but so far, the pike had eluded me, despite was two potential fish I’d missed, so I was a hearing stories of others catching; isn’t little disheartened, especially as that was the that always the way? last bleep from either alarm for some time… The weather forecast was for freezing fog, I like fishing this well managed park lake, and by the time I arrived at the waterside as and after announcing my presence on social dawn broke, I couldn’t see very much, aside media, it was nice to find a friend who came from a covering of ice over half of the lake. by to prebait a few spots (don’t worry, I won’t On my previous visit, I’d missed a run from tell anyone!) and share a few ideas for an a particular peg on the car park side, so set hour or two. I always make an effort to get a few clues from anglers who know the water up two rods, and dropped a roach hookbait better than I, and although Ian is a regular close in, under a tree, and cast the other out carp angler, he still lets me know where he towards the margins of the island, again, has spotted pike; very useful! Whilst Ian was close to a fallen tree. I’d been there about an watching, I pulled off one of those miracle hour, slowly getting lower in my chair as the casts, the kind of cast which lands within freezing fog coated everything with a thin centimetres of the target at about seventy sheen of bitterly cold condensation, when a yards, and the one you can look back and bleep gained my attention. The rod tip was moving, and line slowly peeled forth from the pretend you meant it, when the truth is, it was a fluke, (shh!) but landed perfectly between spool as a fish moved away from the cover the branches of the fallen tree; a perfect of the island tree, so I left it for a couple of ambush point! seconds, lifted the rod, and promptly missed I slowly tightened up to the lead as I didn’t it! Whatever was there had escaped, and want to move the bait at all, and prayed that to make it worse, it had made off with my the pesky swans wouldn’t decide to swim popped up roach hookbait too! Pikepro pop through the lines. After a while, Ian had to up traces make mounting a hookbait far less depart for the school run, and I was left to complicated than some other methods I’ve contemplate packing up as the darkness crept seen, so I quickly hooked another roach on, up on me. I began to pick up the sundries, and flung it back towards the island where leaving the rods as long as possible, when it settled nicely on top of some dying weed. suddenly, a series of twitchy movements saw the drop off fall away, and line slowly (very slowly) move through the rod rings as my Frampton Lane, Hubberts Bridge, Boston, Lincs PE20 3QU wonder cast was picked up! With delicate Tel:01205 290328 bites, I always try to pinch the line between or 01205 290368 forefinger and thumb to see if I can feel the Fax:01205 290247 fish, and I could definitely feel something on the other end! Clicking over the bail Situated 5 Mins drive from the historic town of Boston Two 9 Hole Golf Courses in the vicinity arm, and sweeping the rod skywards, I at last connected with a fish! It felt very heavy, Fishing lake on the park but as I know the water is weedy, I wasn’t Caters for holiday static and tourers convinced it was big fish until I could see it. Shop and Licensed Bar on site As I played it at range, it felt very unusual; Log Cabins For Sale by the Side of the Lake not the normal head shaking thump of a pike, but still a heavy lump… then a series of sharp Restaurant with 30 seats, Meals served all day CARAVAN SALES & TRANSPORT rattles on the rod tip, and I thought I’d lost it! Fortunately, the trebles held, and the pike, STATIC & TOURING CARAVAN PARK now feeling a little lighter, started to move

towards me as it tired. A few minutes later, and a double figure fish was safely netted, laid on the mat, and the trebles released. I cleared my rod, line and net away from the mat, and prepared to turn the fish over for a better look. Unbelievably, it had teeth marks in it! The heavy weight I’d felt was obviously a much bigger female which had taken a fancy to an easy meal, and clamped onto my fish! My capture was in good condition though, a little cold with an odd leech attached, so had obviously been lying on the bottom, but an application of carp care cream
was given to the missing scales and teeth marks, and the fish released to swim away strongly. I packed up in the gloom, and walked back to the van as the mist descended once more, happy with a fish when it looked as though I was going to be beaten again. It was nice to use my new supporters tackle and bait, and get a result, and I have to say that the pop up traces are definitely a much easier way to mount a bait above weed or other muck, so why not check them out? Simple and effective, like pike fishing should be.

PLAYERS GAVE ME EVERYTHING Rotherham United caretaker manager Paul Warne said his players ‘gave me everything’ after leading the Millers to their first win in 16 outings. Warne celebrated his first victory in caretaker charge after a blood and guts performance from his side, who deservedly took maximum points thanks to a first-half strike from Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown. It could have been more for Warne’s Millers with Danny Ward crashing a shot against the bar, followed by a close range miss from the retuning Joe Newell. But Warne was delighted with his side’s performance beaming with pride during another entertaining post match press conference “You’d be surprised to know that it feels quite good,” Warne said. “I think the lads gave me everything they had and I joked with them before hand, about not wanting them to be the guy that comes in and apologises for a mistake or not following a runner. “I don’t want an apology. I just want you to all come in and look me in the eye and if we’ve won, lost or drawn, I’ll accept that. I think the lads gave me everything and they’ll be exhausted come Tuesday, so I have to the problem of trying to get them recovered in time for that. “I was proud of the way they played and it was obvious at the final whistle, the subs included, and the lads that didn’t make the bench and the staff, you could see the joy. I think the players appreciate what we’ve done as a staff for them because we’ve come in at a hard time trying to pick them up. “They’re good players but they need a bit of love. I’m very proud of them and they’re exhausted in there now, but so they should be, it’s tough love.” Warne restored Tunisian defender Aïmen Belaïd to the starting 11 for his first appearance of the season, and he played a huge role as the Millers claimed their first clean sheet since August.

The caretaker manager praised the returning Belaïd as well as goalkeeper Lewis Price who made several crucial saves. “Everyone is really pleased,” he added. “I was pleased for Belaïd and I thought the back five were outstanding. He hasn’t played for about eight and half months and I’ve tried to keep him sane behind the scenes because I’m the fitness coach. He’s a great pro and he deserved his chance and he was excellent. The back five were brilliant and they gave the rest of the team a platform to play. “I just wish for my heart rate we could have got a second goal, but I’m over the moon with a win and a clean sheet because Pricey has been excellent. He’s been Campy’s number two all season and I don’t know how mentally keepers do that, he has trained really well all the time. “I’ve said it before; it’s like a family here. All the staff care about the players and it’s they’re not commodities here. We’re a good family club and I love working here and I think the fans appreciate it when the lads put a real shift in. “If we would have conceded late on I think they
would still have been applauded off because the fans appreciate effort and as a stand-in manager, that’s all I want to see from my players.” Ian Holloways’s side did threaten to spoil the party at AESSEAL New York Stadium late on but Warne admitted that he never felt like his side were in danger, on an afternoon when his defensive players excelled. “I’m well aware of the run we’ve been on and how emotionally fragile the players might be and if they concede they might be thinking ‘here we go again’ but I just felt there was a bit more resilience about them today,” he continued. “It sounds a bit arrogant but I didn’t feel like we were going to concede. “I felt like we were really strong and then right at the death I put Kelly on to make another centre half and they defended like men.” The caretaker boss continued to add that he called on a battling display from his players in the pre-match briefing and he was happy that they delivered, yielding a value for money performance. “I asked them to go out and play like warriors and
make this feel like a fortress again and just be hard and ugly to play against,” Warne explained. “I think if you paid your money today and watched our team and what they gave, you go home and think you’ve invested your money wisely. “I just think they stood up and were men today and if you have the backbone of your team performing then the periphery follow.”

The partnership will see the Embark name remain on the back of the home and away shorts for the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons. The financial services provider have enjoyed a lengthy relationship with the club, with Rotherham United’s commercial director Steve Coakley heralding the announcement of another successful commercial deal for the Millers. “Our partnership with Embark has proven to be one of our most successful, so we are obviously thrilled to extend our association for the next two seasons. “Having the Embark logo on the back of our home and away shorts is great exposure for their brand, but the partnership goes much deeper than the name. “They are passionate about the club, they attend all the home games and are involved in several other areas of the commercial operation. “I have personally enjoyed a great relationship with Phil Smith and his colleagues, and I look forward to a long and prosperous future for both parties.” Embark director Phil Smith added: "We are absolutely delighted to further extend our now long standing sponsorship of the Millers. "This club represents tenacity, professionalism and community. These are values we are investing in and it is terrific to associate our national business with the club."
MIDFIELDER SAYS PLAYERS PREPARED FOR FESTIVE PERIOD Matty Blair is targeting a successful Christmas period as Rovers look to bounce back from the defeat to Plymouth Argyle. Rovers were beaten 2-0 at Home Park as Argyle reclaimed top spot in Sky Bet League Two, and the midfielder expects that frustration to be channelled into the start of another run. “We don’t really look at the table, we look at every game and will analyse this on Monday then put it to bed,” he said. “The gap to fourth doesn’t bother me, we just need to concentrate on putting together another run like we’ve just been on. “We have this Christmas period where we want to put a right statement down to the league. “We know the schedule, we will be prepared for it, but none of the lads are looking beyond the Grimsby game.” Saturday’s result was disappointing for Rovers, but Blair agreed with his manager that the visitors had played well. “I thought we actually performed pretty well, it’s just a frustrating one,” he added. “The mood, for a defeat, is actually quite good. We’re obviously gutted at the result, no one likes to lose a match, but we’ll dust ourselves down and go again. It is a characteristic we’ve shown before as a squad, and we’ll show that again.

WILDER REACTS TO SWINDON WIN Chris Wilder felt Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Swindon Town at Bramall Lane fully deserved. The Blades moved up to second place in Sky Bet League after four second-half goals without replay against the Robins. Mark Duffy netted a brace, whilst a fine strike from Paul Coutts and a goal from Caolan Lavery, his first in red and white, rounded off the scoring. And the performance earnt praise from the manager, who remarked: “We certainly needed that after a couple of blips. I’ve said previously about the importance of getting the results
the performances deserve and we have in comprehensive fashion on this occasion. “We’ve had a purple patch before, when we’ve scored a lot of goals and we believe in the way we play and the players at the top of the pitch. “People who watch us every week will have probably sensed someone was going to take a good beating when it clicked and we took our chances. “The first goal was crucial, the shackles really came off after we got that and our football was superb. We were good in the first-half too after a slow first 10 minutes and should have come in at the break in
front.” Wilder added: “But it is a good day, we’re playing positively, we’re intimidating opposition in the correct manner, they know it is going to take something special to get a result at Bramall Lane. “We’re setting the standards, we are showing the grit and determination and we are getting on the front foot and getting the supporters right behind the team. “I like to see us get after the opposition and the fans here respond to that. When we chase and hassle teams we get them out of their comfort zones and that’s when they become vulnerable.”
UNDER 23S RETURN TO WINNING WAYS
United’s U23 returned to winning ways in the Professional Development League with a deserved victory at Gresty Road on Monday evening. A first-half brace from Jake Wright, in addition to a goal from Louis Reed cancelled out Daniel Udoh’s opener for the Alex, before David Brooks got on the scoresheet in the second period to ensure Callum Ainley’s stoppage-time strike was nothing more than a consolation for the hosts. Defender James Wilson, on his return from injury, captained the side and completed an hour against the Railwaymen, with the Blades also having the luxury of missing a penalty, with Dave Richards denying Ben Whiteman in the first-half. Striker UDOH had already missed an excellent opportunity to opening the scoring, prior to
rifling past Long in the 11th minute, but from there after it was pretty much one-way traffic. Six minutes after going behind the Blades levelled. A long, high ball forward saw Richards misjudge the bounce and WRIGHT nipped in to head home into the unguarded net. In the 23rd minute, United went in front and it was the ever-dangerous WRIGHT again, this time finishing well having been played through on goal. Despite bossing the game, United need a helping hand from Richards, who had previously saved Whiteman’s penalty, to get a third on the stroke of half-time. Bennett did well on the right before cutting back for REED to shoot at goal and his tame effort squirmed under the body of the home goalkeeper. The Blades continued to have the upper hand at the beginning of the second with Reed
having a couple of opportunities, at the other end, Long was alert to deny Ainley. With 16 minutes remaining three became four, with Richards again at fault. He rushed from his goal to try and snuff out the danger only for BROOKS to beat him to the ball and stab home. To Crewe credit they kept going until the final whistle and got goal for their efforts, as AINLEY finished off following good work by Kirk down the right-wing. But it was the visitors who deservedly left with all three points and a morale boosting success.
Blades: Long, Bennett (Gordon 68) Kelly, Whiteman (K. Smith 82), Wilson (Graham 60), Semple, Slater, Reed, Wright, Hallam, Brooks. Unused: Warhurst, Crofts.

WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
The four-goal second half demolition of Swindon Town was arguably the best 45 minutes seen at Bramall Lane this season. The midfield trio of Mark Duffy, John Fleck and
maintain the form he showed against Swindon, the Blades will always have a chance to beat teams. John Fleck, another summer signing, is testament to the changes that have occurred since Wilder took over. A ball-playing midfielder, who is always looking to create chances is something the Blades lacked entirely last season. This column has previously noted the remarkable turnaround for Coutts, many could not have foreseen that he would become a key player in United’s side following disappointing performances last season. However,
he is the player that gives the freedom for Duffy and Fleck to do the damage in attack. On Fleck and Coutts, Wilder said: “With the ability they have to strike a ball its criminal they don’t score more goals. They’re creative midfielders who want to slide people in, but sometimes
they have to take the responsibility and they did.” Wilder has the perfect midfield dynamic to take the Blades forward this season, if he can find the right partnership up-front then the Blades may prove why they were pre-season title favourites.

CARLOS FRUSTRATED AT READING Carlos Carvalhal said the Owls needed to show more killer instinct in front of goal after his side lost 2-1 to Reading at the Madejski Stadium. Wednesday had chances to take the lead before a deflected effort from Roy Beerens found its way into the back of the net. Beerens doubled the
Royals’ lead before a stoppage time header from Steven Fletcher got the Owls on the scoresheet. Carvalhal said: “We have chances to score but we didn’t take them, Reading scored without having a real chance before, and this is the difference. “I don’t remember Keiren Westwood having anything to do for most of the game,
but this is football. “We played well and I am proud of my players but obviously disappointed with the result. “We have created a lot of chances, we started the second half very, very well but they must be taken.” On a positive note, young striker George Hirst made his league debut for the Owls
when he came off the bench in the second half. The head coach added: “George did well when he came on. “He tried to make an impact with his colleagues when he got on the pitch. “It wasn’t an easy game for him to come into, but he did well.”
STRONG COMPETITION Carlos Carvalhal believes the competition in the Championship is stronger this season with more teams equipped to fight for a top six position. The top of the Sky Bet Championship is finely balanced and Tuesday’s round of fixtures will certainly see teams change positions in the table. Wednesday will be aiming to jump back into a coveted top six berth and Carlos explained: “You must progress and
you must win points. We are not far away from third, but at the same time there are teams close behind us with big value also. “It’s simple, the more points you achieve, the better position you will be. It’s why I don’t think too much ahead. “I must just focus on the next game - that is the most important. Take each game as it comes, try to win as many points as possible and see where you can go. “There are teams more ready to fight for the
play-offs for sure, comparing with last season.” Tuesday’s opposition Barnsley represent another tough test for Wednesday on home soil and the head coach added:
“The competition is better this season, it is improving. The quality of the players, quality of the coaches, the way that the teams are playing. “I think this year, the competition is more hard for sure.”
