SHEFFIELD’S GOLDEN GIRL GRACE IS NEW SHEFFIELD LEGEND A gold-winning athlete from last summer’s Rio games was honoured by her home city – by becoming the 20th person to receive a Sheffield Legends star outside the Town Hall just before Christmas. Former High Storrs pupil Grace Clough, aged 25, won Paralympic gold in the mixed coxed fours rowing team in Rio in September and was in Sheffield last month for the unveiling. Grace, whose parents still live in Sheffield, was born with a condition called Erb’s Palsy, where
the nerves in the shoulder are damaged during birth, and only took up rowing after attending an event at EIS in the city. Her family and friends will be at the event. Grace said: “I am so proud to be named as one of Sheffield’s Legends. “Looking down the list of ‘stars’, I still can’t quite believe I have been honoured and linked to such amazing people. It is such a special event to top off what has been the best, and certainly most memorable, year of my life. The dream just keeps getting better and better”.
Councillor Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We are incredibly proud of Grace and her fantastic achievement and all of our Olympians and Paralympians who competed in Rio. What is so pleasing is that none of our phenomenal athletes have forgotten their city roots and continue to have proud associations across the city, training, living and working here. “Sheffield is truly a city of sport and our Sheffield Legends reflect the part they play in our city’s formidable reputation.”
Grace Clough has never let her impairment stop her sporting career and played basketball for Yorkshire Under-16s before captaining her varsity team, as well as playing football while studying for a sociology degree at the University of Leeds. In 2013, she saw an advert for a ParalympicsGB SportsFest in Sheffield where she was talentspotted, and, by the end of the day, had three sports vying for her services. She was asked to go on a
two-week training camp in Spain and then invited to train full-time with the rest of the squad. At the start of 2014, she made the move to become a full-time athlete and it has proved to be hugely successful, winning two world championship gold medals in 2014 and 2015, setting world record times alongside Daniel Brown, Pamela Relph, James Fox and Cox Oliver James. She made her Paralympic debut at Rio 2016 – and helped the British boat successfully defend their title, watched by her proud parents. More information about the Sheffield Legends can be found at www. sheffield.gov.uk/legends.

Internet wasn’t working earlier, so I spent some time with my family. They seem like nice people. Woke up this morning to find a spoon in my mouth, a tea bag in my left eye and milk in my right ear. I’m sick of being treated like a mug! My New Year’s resolutions are: 1. Stop making lists. B. Be more consistent. 7. Learn to count. Happy Easter everyone!!! Think I may have premature congratulation. My wife’s left me because I’ve eaten far too much chocolate over the Christmas period. I think this calls for a celebration. Established in 2009, Megaslam are one of the premier Wrestling promotions in Europe and in January, the company are bringing their unique show to Sheffield this January! The Library Theatre will play host to ‘The Show with the WOW Factor’ and it will be the first time in 4 years since Megaslam have played Sheffield. Megaslam owner, Brad Taylor threw his hat into the promotional ring in 2009 with a small show in Rotherham. Since then the company has presented more than a thousand shows across the British Isles and often features some of the most recognisable names in World Wrestling. Taylor, 25, was once a competitor himself before stopping in-ring competition in 2014 to focus on promoting. ‘Megaslam was born in 2009 and since then we have slowly built up our fanbase and now are one of the leading touring companies in the United Kingdom and Europe. Very few promoters run more shows than Megaslam Wrestling’ ‘This is our first foray back into Sheffield for 4 years, the last time was at the now defunct Bellhouse Road WMC, we now play host to much bigger venues' With the news of ITV bringing the popular World of Sport Wrestling show back to it’s TV screens on New Years Eve and into 2017, Megaslam shows feature most of the stars you will be able to see on television screens, live and in person. ‘It is great news that Wrestling is returning to TV in the United Kingdom, our British based stars in my opinion are the best Wrestlers in the world and they deserve to be in the limelight’ ‘The good news for Megaslam fans is that they can see the soon to be TV stars live as most of them already feature on our shows’ ‘There will also be appearances from Wrestlers that will be seen on the brand new WWE UK Programme, where 16 of the finest Wrestlers from Britain compete in a knockout tournament. Some of them will be coming to Sheffield’

COUNCIL CONTINUES SUPPORTING LIBRARIES Community-run libraries will continue to be supported by Sheffield City Council under new funding plans. The authority is pledging a minimum of £655,000 guaranteed support across 11 branches from 2017 to 2020. The existing support package for these branches ends in March 2017. Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Libraries at Sheffield City Council, said: “Local libraries are very important and benefit people in many different ways. I’m very pleased to announce that we’re going to continue supporting the communityrun branches, as well as setting out a compelling vision for a new Central Library. This shows how important libraries are to us. “Despite the massive budget cuts imposed
on us by Government we’re looking to maintain the funding next year at the existing level and then guarantee a minimum amount for the next two years. I hope this gives certainty to the library volunteers who are doing a brilliant job and delivering an important service for the people of Sheffield.” Bob Mynors, one of the volunteer managers at Stannington Library, said: “Stannington Library welcomes the renewed package of support from the council, as this will give us some financial stability for at least the next three years. We’re also pleased that it’s not just about grants but about other forms of professional and practical support as well. This helps us to run efficient libraries, and shows how much the council values the work of all the library volunteers.”
FREE FLU JABS GET IN TOUCH Thousands of people at risk from flu are being urged to take up their free vaccination as figures shown that only one in three people at risk have done so this winter. Figures for Sheffield, which are similar to the national trend, show that only 21,000 people under 65 who are registered with a GP and have an underlying health condition had a flu vaccine up to the end of October. This is out of 62,000 ‘at risk’ people with conditions such as asthma, heart problems or diabetes. People can get a flu vaccine from their GP practice or most pharmacies. They are free for pregnant women, children and adults with underlying health conditions, people over 65 years old and children aged two, three and four. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, said: “There’s been a time lag since the latest figures came out so we know more people will have taken up the flu vaccine. However it’s really a worry that the take up has been so low amongst the most vulnerable people. “Flu can cause a high temperature, sore throats, achiness and tiredness. But for some people it can be much more serious than this. “It’s not too late to have your vaccine this winter – last year we had cases as late as April. Please speak to your GP or pharmacy about getting your flu vaccination.” Dr Zak McMurray, GP and Medical Director for NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), added: “The flu jab is one of the most effective ways to reduce harm from flu, so if you’re eligible for the free vaccination, get it now; it’s free because you need it.” For more information visit: www.nhs.uk/Flu

There are 28 libraries in Sheffield. Sheffield City Council runs 12 libraries and volunteers run the remaining 16. Responsibilities changed hands from 2014 after Government cuts meant the council could no longer afford to run them all. Five branches run by volunteers are ‘co-delivered libraries’ which means the council pays for their building and maintenance costs. This will continue under the new arrangements. The remaining eleven branches are ‘associate libraries’. The council supports them with funding grants and training, and these are the ones covered by the new deal. For further information visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraries for more information about libraries in Sheffield.
HELPING ROUGH SLEEPERS
Anyone can become homeless. Sleeping rough can be dangerous at any time of the year, but particularly so in winter weather. In January 2017, The New World Trading Company (NWTC) will begin the New Year with an innovative take on the popular January sale; The Ginuary Sale. The gin-themed sale, running until 31st January, will allow guests to enjoy deals on a selection of gin brands served across The Botanist. As well as gin-themed deals, guests can also enjoy 50% off food inspired by the deli, rotisserie and BBQ. The Ginuary Sale features a collaboration with four gin brands currently listed in The New World Gin List: Mason’s Dry Yorkshire gin, Poetic Licence gin, Langley’s gin and William Chase’s GB gin. Guests can enjoy a generous 2 for 1 deal on any of the four brands when ordering a perfect
gin serve. The perfect serves, created by Head Bartender Nick Whitby, contain ingredients such as orange zest and green cardamom pods, which best complement and enhance the flavour of each gin. To complete the perfect serve, guests can choose to add Fever Tree Tonic Water for a refreshing and enjoyable G&T. Across all of the 14 participating sites, gin lovers can also enjoy a number of gin-themed events taking place throughout the month. Exciting events such as a gin festival, which is set to be held on Thursday January 19th. Nick Whitby, Head Bartender for NWTC, commented “Our New World Gin List has proved very popular with our guests since its implementation earlier this
year. So we couldn’t wait to create an occasion to celebrate some of the finest examples of gin being produced across the country, all whilst offering a refreshing angle on the traditional January sales!” “It’s been fantastic working with NWTC during 2016 and we have loved meeting the teams when visiting each site. The Ginuary promotion has got us so excited we can’t wait to begin our involvement and work on the events with them” Karl Mason, Masons Yorkshire Gin. Alongside all things gin, guests can also feast upon 50% off food when booking via the exclusive link: www.thebotanist.uk.com/ jansale. Restrictions apply and bookings must be made through the link.

2,000 PUBS NOMINATED AS ACVS SHOWS HUGE APPETITE FOR PERMANENT PLANS TO PROTECT PUBS Permanent measures to keep pub doors open need to be introduced now, according to the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), as it marks 2,000 campaigning groups across England successfully listing their local pub as an Asset of Community Value (ACV). Since legislation was introduced in May 2015 which removed Permitted Development Rights from pubs nominated as ACVs, community groups have spent countless hours fighting tooth and nail to ensure their locals are registered, and are therefore subjected to the regular planning application process. Without being registered, pubs can be demolished or converted overnight without public consultation. ACVs can be granted on any building that has a proven strong community focus, but pubs have had by far the biggest take up from local communities. Out of just under 4,000 ACVs on building such as libraries, community centres, post offices, half of them have been granted for pubs. CAMRA is calling on the Government to cut out this frustrating process, which puts a
huge burden on local communities and councils, who deal with this lengthy and clunky procedure. Instead, they believe that placing pubs in a class of their own so that owners must always seek planning permission before converting or demolishing a local will provide permanent security for locals. Colin Valentine, CAMRA’s National Chairman says: “It is heartening that so many communities across England have spent so much time going through the process of nominating their pub as an Asset of Community Value. This shows a huge appetite for protecting pubs, which are more than just businesses – they
are invaluable landmarks in our communities. Unfortunately, the ACV process can be time-consuming, fraught with difficulties and at the end of the day is only a temporary measure – listings must be renewed every five years to maintain protection. It simply doesn’t make sense that pubgoers have to jump through these extra hoops when it is clear that so many communities overwhelmingly want a say on the future of their much-loved pub. All we are asking for a level playing field where a planning application on a pub has to go through the full planning process.”
HOLY SPECTACULAR MUSICAL SISTER ACT COMES TO THE LYCEUM Craig Revel Horwood directs million selling X Factor winner Alexandra Burke in the hit musical comedy Sister Act at the Lyceum Theatre from Monday 16 – Saturday 21 January. Based on the smash-hit movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith, Sister Act tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier (Alexandra Burke), a disco diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder and under protective custody, is hidden in a convent. Disguised as a nun and under the suspicious eye of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. Alexandra Burke recently seen on the Lyceum stage in The Bodyguard, originally rose to fame after winning the fifth series of The X Factor. Her debut number one single Hallelujah sold over one million copies in the UK, a first for a British female soloist. Featuring original music by Tony and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Disney’s Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Enchanted), dazzling dance routines and songs inspired by Motown, soul and
disco, Sister Act is the funniest and funkiest musical around. Sister Act comes to the Lyceum Theatre from Monday 16 – Saturday 21 January. Tickets can be purchased from Sheffield Theatres’ Box Office in-person, by
phone on 0114 249 6000 or online at sheffieldtheatres.co.uk and are priced from £28.00 – £49.00 (a transaction fee of £1.50 (£1.00 online) applies to all bookings made at the Box Office, excluding cash). Concessions and group discounts are available.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
Firstly, Happy New Year to every single one of you, I hope you have a fish filled and happy 2017, and I’d like to offer my gratitude for your continued support throughout 2016, and hope it will carry on! My last session of 2016 was a social affair, which is surprising, as I’m perhaps (selfconfessed) one of the most unsociable anglers on the bank! Nevertheless, I was invited to a small gathering of like-minded lure anglers to finish the year off, and despite bitterly cold conditions, decided to give it a go! We met on a side street in the city, and I arrived to find one other angler already rummaging in his boot, sorting his tackle, and then silently padding off into the gloom to find a spot before the rest of our happy band turned up. Or so I thought. It turned out that Chris, an experienced lure angler, had actually nipped off to check that the canal was ice free in the proposed area, and that we would all get a fair crack of the whip, and hopefully, all catch a predator or two; top man, can’t fault that can you? I followed him over the footbridge, breath steaming in the bitter morning air as the fog swirled across the canal; the day promised to be hard work indeed as an overnight low of -5 had been forecast after a period of settled, warmer weather... Feet stamping, arms swinging, we met under the bridge in the morning murk like a pair of cold war spies. “You Clint?” I replied that I was. “Chris; nice to meet you.” A few minutes later, over the bridge came Steve, followed by another Chris, and Ian; our band of brothers was complete, and as only Chris (the first one) really knew the stretch, he described what we may catch, and pointed out some of the best spots for us, before following on to ensure others got in first. Pleasantries exchanged, we all got down to some serious fishing, and all had elected to fish light jig heads and tiny rubber lures, except the other Chris, who had opted for a small wobbler plug in search of bigger fish. The session was on! It was the kind of morning where your feet slowly start to disassociate from the rest of your body, uncovered ears sting, and the skin on your knuckles glows red, before needles of discomfort shard the fingertips. It really was one of the coldest mornings I’ve fished in for a long time, and a lack of piscine action soon saw us resting for a minute or two, to plunge hands into pockets in an attempt to restart some circulation; it was FREEZING! Experienced lure pro Chris Millward was the first to catch, a small perch, taken whilst wiggling a tiny pink lure under the near shelf, which revitalised our efforts somewhat. He then had another, and I missed a bite, before Steve added a second perch to our tally as we slowly worked ‘upstream’ towards further features; a bridge, a lock, a deep bend, and an area of dying reeds. The canal, a short stretch of no more than a mile, was packed with likely

spots, and it was surprising to find so many good areas in which to work a lure in such a short length, but we still struggled… It became apparent that the near shelf held a number of small perch, and between us, we slowly picked off a few which we could irritate enough to provoke a bite. The fish were in no mood to chase lures though, and our tiny offerings had to be dropped on the nose of any target, and worked hard! After an hour of changing lures, and hooks, I settled on a tiny pink ‘Slurp’ lure, and bit off a proportion of the front end to make it even smaller before sliding it onto the hook. This really is my ‘go to’ lure at the minute, and twinned with a tiny jighead, seems to work almost anywhere, but more importantly, gives me confidence! I’d had a few ‘nips’ before the change, but this tiny alteration made all the difference, and I started to pick off small stripeys as we moved on. It was still incredibly hard work to attract bites, although Chris, by this time, had had over a metre of perch, and Ian wasn’t far behind, but the rest of us were playing catch up as we struggled with the conditions and unfamiliar venue. Reaching a particularly ‘fishy looking’ reed lined spot, we lined up with a few feet between us, and proceed to work the swim with our lures. To my front, a small overhanging tree clung to the brickwork of the dilapidated factory wall opposite, and I swung the little pink lure beneath it. I watched the braid pull down until the lure rested on the bottom, then twitched it slowly back towards me… WHAM! The rod was nearly pulled from my frozen fingers as a fish hit the lure, and my first thought was that a pike was the likely culprit as it surged across the canal! After a few seconds, I saw the fish swirl beneath my feet, and a pleasingly long silver flank was glimpsed for an instant; a chub! As chevins do, this one charged around looking for a snag, before I eventually had it in the net and lifted it gently onto the grass at the side of the canal. I was very pleased with what was obviously a quality canal chub of at least a couple of pounds, and quickly flipped the hook out before reaching for the camera, so that Chris could take a picture on my behalf. As I slipped my phone from my pocket, disaster! The chub flipped, rolled over the frame of my net, and slid back into the water, before disappearing into the depths! Ahh! After Chris had stopped laughing, he revealed that my ineptitude had been caught on video, which only made things worse! Another hour passed, and by now, all of us were suffering the effects of a chill wind, and

In warmer weather, this area of water would be packed with predators, all keen to hunt down prey fish, but the blast of frozen air had put them all off any idea of chasing food. A consensus was reached that it was time to pack up, and return to try another day, so we said our farewells, and headed back to the car park to start the engines and get the heaters on! Between us, we managed around four metres of fish, my chub the biggest of them, which may be considered
scant return for a few hours on the bank, but the important thing was that we all learned something. Whether it was tweaking a lure, finding a new spot, catching an unexpected fish, or just making new friends, we all got something from the session, and that’s what made it enjoyable; a great way to end 2016, and as another meet is going to be arranged soon, an even better way to start 2017! New venue, new fish, and new friends; what more could you ask from your fishing?

MILLERS PUNISHED FOR MISSED CHANCES Rotherham United interim manager Paul Warne was left to rue goals conceded at the start of the second-half, as the Millers failed to capitalise on a positive first 45 in a 3-0 defeat to Leeds United. The Millers largely silenced a capacity home crowd with a impressive first-half display at Elland Road, with Izzy Brown going closest as Warne’s side carved out the better openings. After the break Kyle Bartley headed the hosts in front just after the interval, with Chris Wood bagging a brace to end any hopes for the Millers. Warne admitted he was heartened by the first-half performance, but went on to say that errors cost his side from getting anything from the game. “I thought that we were excellent in the first half,” Warne said after the game. “I didn’t put the bus in front of the goal, we played 4-4-1-1 and we came to win the game. I have been trying to be positive with the lads, trying to give them confidence on the ball. I told them these are great places to play, and the more that the crowd boo, the better it will be for us. I thought that we did well in the firsthalf, and to go in 0-0 was a bit of an injustice to us.” The Millers played with fluidity and created opportunities in the opening 45 minutes, but Warne revealed that the goal just after the break broke up his side’s momentum. “We created loads, and I felt really comfortable in the game,” he added. “I would go as far as saying that I enjoyed the way we played. There looked to be confidence

throughout, we played out from the back at times, and all the players wanted the ball. Half-time came, and I said that it didn’t count for anything because second-half they will come out stronger, so we have to keep our concentration levels up and keep playing the same way. Obviously to concede from a corner when one of our players left their man, and to concede like that at a place like this – straight away that takes the pressure off the home team. It was a psychological blow for my players because they didn’t deserve that. The second half didn’t go as well, the lads gave me everything but unfortunately the goals changed the game. “I am not going to stand here and slaughter my players individually. They both know that they could have done better in both situations. I pick the team, so I take responsibility, but the goals were avoidable. They get one or two chances and they score, and we get one or two chances and we don’t score. They are the fine margins at this level.” To compound matters for Warne, the Millers lost captain Lee Frecklington to an ankle injury before the end, but the caretaker boss remains optimistic over his fitness.
RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS VERSUS BURTON ALBION... Rotherham United were delighted to surprise one lucky young supporter with a mascot package for our Random Act of Kindness at the game against Burton Albion. Thomas was selected from the crowd by Miller Bear at AESSEAL New York Stadium where he was attending the game with his dad, to join the warm-up for a kickabout before the clash with
the Brewers on 29th December. Having donned the famous red and white he joined the two teams in the tunnel before leading them out to a nearly 10,000-strong crowd ahead of the Sky Bet Championship showdown. Head of Community Jamie Noble was once again delighted to make it a memorable match for the young fan and expressed his pride at another succesful Random Act. “As I have said in the past, it is great to see our young supporters enjoying the matchday experience here at AESSEAL New York Stadium because they are the future of the football club,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “Thomas’ face lit up when Miller Bear picked him out of the crowd and I hope he enjoyed the day enough to keep coming back for many years to come as a supporter.” We hope you had a fantastic day Thomas!

RESULT WAS NEVER IN DOUBT - FERGUSON Darren Ferguson felt his Rovers side thoroughly deserved the win against Stevenage, and praised his side for their patience as the game went on. Tommy Rowe’s 83rd minute strike was enough to seal a win which for much of the afternoon looked as if it may not come. Ferguson says he always expected his side to come up with a moment of quality to win the match. “There was a determination to keep doing what we were doing and eventually that bit of quality paid off so credit to the players for that,” said Ferguson. “Tommy’s come into the box from that wide area, he’s hit it across the keeper which is always the best thing to do in those situations. “They were resilient in the way they defended, we believed we’d get the winner and just kept doing what we wanted to do. “I had a good feeling going into the game, the players concentration in the pre match meeting and on the training ground was outstanding having played a game just 24 hours earlier, so that was very professional and I was very pleased.” Rovers announced the return of Everton midfielder Conor Grant before the game, as he signed on loan to the end of the season, and he went straight into the starting line-up. The manager was delighted to get his man. “It’s a fantastic signing for the club, the board have backed me and we really went after Conor. He’s a championship player and we’re really fortunate to get him,” expressed Ferguson. “I had no hesitation in playing him today as I know he’s a good player. He slotted in well and he’s played in the same system when he was here last season.”

BLADES MARCH ON AT BURY 2016/17 The Blades battled back from a goal down to stretch the advantage at the top of Sky Bet League One. Billy Sharp scored his 17th of the season and Kieron Freeman is second in three days, either side of an own goal. Wilder made changes to his starting line-up for the first fixture of 2017. Wright, Scougall and Lavery all started. Coutts and Duffy dropped to the bench after a busy Christmas period and Clarke missed out after picking up a knock on Saturday. McNulty was recalled from his loan at Bradford City and was on the bench. The only opportunity of the opening 10 minutes was a Blades break, started by Moore and involving Lafferty and Scougall before Sharp sliced wide. Bury had
to wait until 12 minutes before their first chance but they opened the scoring - Lavery was dispossessed in his own half and MELLIS was afforded the time and space to fire into the top corner, giving Moore little chance. United, however, were level inside 10 minutes. Following a foul on Lavery, Fleck whipped in a free-kick and after a minor melee, the ball dropped for SHARP to fire home with his left foot. The leveller prompted a spell of Blades pressure. A weighted O’Connell pass presented an opportunity for Lavery, who turned inside Bedeau but goalkeeper Williams made a fine save. The lively Lavery then was involved in two moves that saw shots from Scougall and Fleck blocked.
Late on in the half, Sharp robbed Kay but was unable to find the target with another left footer, whilst on the stroke of half-time Burgess hit a free-kick into the Blades wall after Basham’s foul. There was a lively start to the second half. Lavery and Sharp linked well but were denied by an offside flag and Bury had a great chance from Mackreth’s cross but Vaughan hammered wide on 50 minutes. Ebanks-Landell headed over a Fleck free-kick and Basham shot across goal and wide ahead of Bury thinking they should have had a penalty when a shot from Burgess hit Wright’s hand but the referee was not convinced. It got worse for Bury with United’s next serious attack. Freeman cut out a pass and raced into the box, laying off
for Lavery to cross and ETUHU diverted the ball past his own goalkeeper. After a number of substitutions, including Bury throwing on a couple of strikers, United added a third on 81 minutes. Very patient build up around the left saw Lavery progress around the back of his
WILDER IS A HAPPY BOSS Chris Wilder was a happy man following Monday’s encounter at Bury. The 3-1 Gigg Lane scoreline completed a maximum points haul over the festive period which leaves the Blades top of Sky Bet League One. Billy Sharp and Kieron Freeman scored either side of an own goal after Bury had taken the lead through Jacob Mellis. Wilder told the media afterwards: “It was a great result, but not a free-flowing performance, the
conditions didn’t allow that. The pitch looked OK, but it was difficult to handle for both teams and with no disrespect to Bury that was something of a leveller. “Bury have had an upturn in performances recently and they gave us a genuine test. We didn’t get outbattled and came away with the right result. We’re in a good position, it’s exciting and we’ve set ourselves up to go well, but we just have to remain focused and concentrate on ourselves.”
Wilder made changes for the fixture and added: “Jake (Wright) came back into the team and was outstanding, it was a difficult day for the creative players and playing Bash in midfield gave us that extra energy and strength. “Paul (Coutts) and Mark (Duffy) were excellent on Saturday and worked their socks off to the end with Couttsy setting up the decisive goal, but we felt we needed to give them a breather and we felt Caolan (Lavery) deserved his opportunity.”
In addition, Marc McNulty was a surprise addition on the bench after he was recalled from his loan spell at Bradford City. Wilder explained why: “We’re looking for partnerships at the top of the pitch and it’s about a combined effort and goals. Bringing Marc back gives us more options. “Marc wanted to get some football at the beginning of the season and we felt it would benefit all parties, but then within weeks, Leon (Clarke) is injured,

Caolan is struggling for match fitness and Matt (Done) gets a fractured jaw and suddenly we’re down to one striker. “But that’s a learning curve with the new loan rules and something

we’ve got to note in the future. I’ve got to protect us, Marc now has an opportunity to stake a claim, he’s positive and part of our plans.”
BLADES SIGN CARRUTHERS WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
Chris Wilder has made his first signing of the January transfer window, bringing Samir Carruthers to Bramall Lane for an undisclosed fee. Carruthers joins from MK Dons and has signed a three-and-a-
half year deal. The midfielder made 28 appearances for the Dons this season, and featured 43 times in the Championship last season as the Dons were relegated. The 23-year-old was a threat for the Dons in the early part of
the fixture against the Blades in October, before picking up a knock and being substituted. Speaking to sufc.co.uk about the move, Wilder said: “We have tracked and monitored Samir for some time and he is a player who can grow with us, we are delighted
that the board have backed us with this level of investment.” Carruthers, who can play out wide and down the middle, has presumably been brought in to provide competition for Mark Duffy and Matt Done. Marc McNulty has been recalled from his loan spell at Bradford City, and was immediately named on the bench for the fixture against Bury. The 24-year-old Scot only managed to score once whilst on loan at Valley Parade. However, with Leon Clarke injured and Billy Sharp taking the majority of the scoring responsibility, Wilder will hope he can get the best out
of McNulty for the rest of the season. Wilder has allowed Ben Whiteman to join Mansfield Town until the end of the season, the 20-yearold has made five
appearances in red and white this season. Whiteman will play under the charismatic boss Steve Evans as he aims to get minutes under his belt in League Two.

CARLOS REVIEWS WOLVES STALEMATE Following a low-key goalless draw with Wolves on Monday, Carlos Carvalhal said the prospect of two games in three days prevented a peak performance from his side. The Wanderers stalemate came hot on the heels of Saturday’s draw with Preston and the head coach said such a quick
turnaround of games would always present problems: “It is not realistic to expect players to play at the top of their performance with two games in three days. “It is not possible to play correctly because they are in the red and this is when the injuries can occur. “But this is football and
this is the schedule. It is the same for everyone in the competition but I have seen some strange results in the Championship today. “I am sure every coach will tell you the same, all around the country.” On the game itself, Carlos said a draw was probably the right result as both sides had chances and a strong
penalty appeal each. He added: “I think the result was correct because we had chances, they had chances, and I believe both could have had a penalty. “We did not play well, that is for sure, and we know we are capable of a lot better performance. “But did we prepare for this game the same as any other, with set
A GOOD FEELING Callum McManaman made his debut for the Owls on Monday following his loan switch from Premier League West Brom. The winger played 53 minutes of the clash with Wolves and head coach Carlos Carvalhal believes there is plenty to come from the exWigan man. Given the sharp turnaround in games, just 48 hours after the Owls’ 1-1 draw with Preston and a number of injury concerns at the club, McManaman was thrown in from the off on Monday and Carlos
was pleased with his contribution. He said: “In normal circumstances, you know I would never put a player in to play that has been with us for five or six days. “I never did this in the past, the circumstances made us do this decision. “But he gave some signals what he can do one or another time in one to one attack. “He didn’t play for a long time so he needs the tempo, he needs time and he will be better. “In the future,
McManaman will be more integrated to the squad. He is a good player to us and to the
future, we must give time to him but I have a good feeling about him.”
pieces, analysis and organisation? No, because we did not have the time. “We also had some injuries – Barry Bannan was playing with little pains, so was Kieran Lee and Fernando Forestieri, who only trained yesterday. “These are not excuses, these are facts. When
we can prepare with the correct time and with a full squad, the outcome is completely different, as we saw at Newcastle. “What I can say for sure is that the future is bright at Sheffield Wednesday when we face proper situations with proper preparations.”
