‘HERTEN TRIANGLE’ AT DONCASTER LAKESIDE FINALLY SET TO BE TRANSFORMED INTO £6M LEISURE COMPLEX Derelict land at Doncaster Lakeside that has laid empty since the 1980s finally looks set to be developed under a major scheme that could create 200 new jobs. ‘Herten Triangle’ at Doncaster Lakeside finally set to be transformed into £6m leisure complex Designs for the Herten Triangle at Lakeside The development could turn a prime parcel of council-owned land at Lakeside near the Dome into an eight-unit leisure complex, after plans were approved by Doncaster

Council’s cabinet yesterday. It could create about 200 jobs and generate an estimated £335,000 a year in business rates for the council. The Herten Triangle, between Asda and the Vue cinema at Lakeside, has not been occupied since the leisure park was built more than three decades ago. It had been identified for disposal as a leisure development but negotiations on the sale stalled more than two years ago. As owner of the land, the council says it has now

decided to step in for this ‘ready to go’ scheme. Mayor Ros Jones said: “This scheme shows the council is taking a proactive and forward thinking approach to regeneration and job creation, whilst at the same time bringing in new income that helps to offset the impact of Government cuts. “This scheme has been stagnant for a number of years now but as the land owner we can make it viable by stepping in. “Once the lettings are in place we can get this regeneration scheme

off the ground which not only drives jobs and growth but sees a big financial return in terms of new business rates. “The income generated will outweigh the costs which we can use to offset the savage government budget cuts and help reduce cuts to services going forward. “We recently launched the Urban Centre Masterplan and will be looking for similar viable development opportunities in the town centre and other parts of the borough that aid regeneration, stimulate our economy and create

new income streams.” Initial plans show that one of the eight units has been allocated for use as a pub. A council spokesman said it is expected that the land will be mainly used for food and drink outlets, following strong interest from drive through operators and restaurateurs. Subject to this approval and commercial operators being signed up, construction work is expected to start later this year. The council says operators could be in place in 2018.

SHOPPERS RETURNING TO MOOR MARKET Another successful year looks to be in store for Sheffield’s Moor Market, with latest figures showing a six per cent increase in shoppers in 2016, compared to 2015. Last year was a great year for the market, which is home to more than 90 independent traders, with almost three million shopping visits for the year as a whole. The Moor Market’s success is due to the quality of the produce and the hard work

of traders and the markets team, as well as one of the best events and marketing programmes around, hosting attractions such as BBC Music Day, the Tramlines music festival, the Youdan Trophy exhibition, monthly vintage fairs and the Snow Queen and Jack Frost experience for children last Christmas. A partnership with the University of Sheffield has also seen the market host many of the university’s events

including Festival of the Mind, Festival Of Life and the recent Sheffield Says. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “I’d really like to commend the collective passion of the traders, who have worked together to put the fun back into the market and have also raised lots of money for local charities in the process. “The Moor Market

boasts an excellent mix of independent retailers providing quality, experience and value. I would urge anyone who hasn’t visited before to pop in for fresh produce, locally-sourced meat and quality gifts, clothes and crafts from independent traders.” The wider Moor area is currently being redeveloped, and a plan is underway to further improve the market for traders and customers alike, so that the Moor Market is ready for when

the nearby regeneration works are completed. This includes the opening of new shops and the creation of the Light entertainment complex, which is set to open in March with a multi-screen cinema and restaurants, alongside the new flagship Primark store. While these redevelopment works are ongoing, in order to give traders further help in what the authority knows are challenging conditions, Sheffield City Council has agreed to extend the existing 50 per cent discount for a further six months, from April 2017.thriving and successful shopping environment.”

After becoming the first Yorkshire city to gain Purple Flag status back in 2013, city leaders are celebrating this week after learning Sheffield has retained the prestigious status for its evening and nighttime economy. Purple Flag is a town and city centre award – similar to the Blue Flag award for beaches – which aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between 5pm and 5am. Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “With its huge selection of bars and restaurants, as well as a thriving theatre district and impressive array of cultural attractions, we know Sheffield is a great place for a night out. However, it is fantastic to see this recognised on a national level. “We are leading the way when it comes to providing such an eclectic mix of places to eat, drink, relax and have fun, with so many quirky and independent places to go as well as the large chains. “I hope that Sheffield city centre will continue to go from strength to strength, with the imminent opening of the new Light leisure and

entertainment complex and the creation of the New Retail Quarter which is now underway.” Since 2007, the programme has awarded the Purple Flag status to more than 65 towns and cities in the UK and Ireland. The Purple Flag programme is managed by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) which works alongside a partnership of key stakeholder groups backed by Government, police and businesses, as well as the UK sponsors Diageo Great Britain. Shanaaz Carroll, chief executive of the ATCM said: “The award is not just about safety, but also the vibrancy and diversity of the evening and night-time offer. This can only be achieved by people working together and across the country we are seeing some amazing examples of this type of partnership working.” Sheffield will officially receive the Purple Flag new accreditation at an awards ceremony on 8 February in Carrick-on-Shannon, Ireland. The after dark economy is worth more than £66bn annually to the UK, supporting thousands of businesses, employing 4.5 per cent of the UK workforce and significantly contributing to local economies. Other towns and cities with Purple Flag status in Yorkshire are Halifax, Hull and Leeds. Sergeant Matthew Burdett, lead for the Sheffield Purple Flag accreditation, said: “This is great news once again for Sheffield and a big thank you to everyone who has supported the process for gaining it once again. “A lot of hard work takes place behind the scenes to gain the status, but it is excellent to see that the work all Sheffield partners do to make the city a vibrant and safe place is recognised.

ELVIS RETURNS TO THE BUILDING By popular demand, Chris Connor returns to Sheffield’s City Hall this autumn with his world-famous Elvis show! Featuring “The Steels,” a twelve piece live band, and backing vocals from “The Sweet Harmonies” this is a two hour production recreating two of The King’s most famous concerts - his come-back Las Vegas Show, and his 1972 Madison Square Gardens concert which amazingly was Elvis’ first appearance live in the Big Apple! Chris has been voted World’s Number One Elvis tribute by fans, and the Telegraph endorsed his show as “Simply the best Elvis Tribute Show in the world!” Joe Esposito (Elvis’ tour manager & best friend) said in Memphis “Wow! That boy is good! He looks just like Elvis & brings the same energy to the stage” while Jerry Schilling (another member of the Memphis Mafia) said “I have been following the career of Chris

Connor with interest - he is simply the best (Elvis Tribute) there is out there!) If you were not lucky enough to see Elvis live, you will walk away from this concert feeling that you have! Many Elvis fans are left emotionally moved when they leave the show. There will only ever be only ONE Elvis Presley however fans all around the

world are talking about Chris Connor who is remarkably so very close to Elvis in both looks and voice and mannerisms. This show has been made by Elvis fans - for Elvis fans. You do not want to miss it - and make sure you book early as these shows sell out very, very quickly!

Council begins extensive improvements to Manor Library A local library is to close for two weeks to allow a significant amount of refurbishment. Manor Library, on Ridgeway Road at Manor Top, will close from Monday 23 January to Sunday 5 February. The First Point, council customer service centre, and housing office based there will also be closed during this period. The nearest alternative facilities

are the Newfield Green, Frecheville and Gleadless library branches. The council’s e-library service can also be used 24 hours a day. People can also use the Darnall and Crystal Peaks housing offices and libraries, as well as the First Points at Howden House in the city centre and at Crystal Peaks. Sheffield City Council is investing £151,000 in the building and the work will continue until March. It includes replacing the roof, adding new skylights, repairing and replacing windows and external repairs. Local Councillor for Arbourthorne and Cabinet Member for Libraries, Councillor Jack Scott,

said: “I know how important this library is to local people, so it’s great that we are able to make these improvements, despite the government’s continued cuts. Some disruption is inevitable for such significant improvements, so we are working hard to resolve these issues and make sure that these services are conveniently provided elsewhere whilst we make these improvements. I am absolutely sure that the disruption will be worth it for the huge benefits we will see. Manor is a terrific library but was greatly in need of improvements.”There are 28 libraries in Sheffield. Visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraries for locations and opening times.

DONCASTER CAR-THEMED CAFE APPROVED An ‘exciting’ carthemed restaurant and cafe is due to be built in the borough, creating 15 new full and part time jobs. Doncaster car-themed cafe approved An artist's impression of the Race Cafe with is due to be built on Nelson Street, Hyde Park, Doncaster The Race Cafe, which will be erected on empty land on Nelson Street, Hyde Park, will bring in seven full-time and eight part-time jobs. The contemporary bar and restaurant, which was proposed by racing car drivers Ewen Sergison and Rachel Lovett, will feature a large exhibition space to showcase a prized collection of

motorsporting history. The venue will also host guest car displays from a network of clubs nationally. As part of the plan, their will also be a 42space car park and an apartment built on the site, which lies on the fringe of the town centre and is off the A6182 White Rose Way. The architect behind the restaurant Neil Cooke said: “When I met Ewen and Rachel I understood the passion, dedication and belief that exists in motorsport. “We collaborated as a team to create a hybrid between a 1950s style milk bar, together with a contemporary bar and dining experience. “Without giving away too many of the surprises

in store, there are car and motorsport references throughout. “Some will be subtle, such as the solar shading mesh externally alluding to a racing car grill, and some will be more obvious such as the new Ducati 916 Strada which will be pride of place, front and centre in the feature copper and glass bar.” Tim Hazeltine, of Business Doncaster, added: “This will be an exciting new addition to Doncaster’s tourism and leisure offer and I look forward to seeing the finished article. Search ‘Race Café’ on Facebook to see how the project is progressing and for updates on the design, brand and future events.

ANGLER’S CORNER

A light weight on the other hand, allows me to use the current to induce a lifelike flutter to my lure without retrieving it at all; on with Clint Walker a tight line, it will hang in mid-water, the Two tough sessions for me this week, but I paddle tail thudding, until something decides still managed to pinch a few bites despite to investigate! On just my second cast, the conditions being less than ideal… firetiger pattern proved too tempting for a An early start, and after defrosting the chubby out-of-season trout which was quickly windscreen, I set off to fish a shallow lake in slipped back into the water; a great start, but search of pike, with the expectation of a run. I not the chub or perch I sought… arrived just as the sun started to lighten the sky, I crept into further swims, and caught a series so quickly walked to the lake side to test the of smaller trout, and odd grayling, before waters. I put my hand on the lake surface, and reaching the end of my beat, so retired to try a was dismayed to note it swaying thirty yards different stretch on a different club ticket, less from the bank; frozen solid! Luckily, I had a than five minutes’ drive away. Again, the river back up plan, so travelled to nearby Astbury is only a few feet across, so accuracy is vital Mere, a 40 acre pit with depths to around fifty to avoid braid becoming caught in overhead feet, and quickly set up a pair of rods in an cover or bankside brambles, and once more, a attempt to catch a snapper. stealthy approach is vital. This time, the lure Unfortunately, Astbury is a tough prospect was flicked across to the base of a tree, and at the best of times, and after an evening of left to drift across the stream before I started to plunging temperatures, my confidence wasn’t exactly high, and so it proved with a nine hour retrieve against the near margin. I felt a sharp pluck, so let the lure drop to the bottom, where session resulting in nothing more than a line it rested for a second or two before a second bite from a huge carp which swam past my rod tips; typical! Although the fish weren’t yank at the rod tip told me that it had been interested, my day wasn’t wasted, as I spoke engulfed by yet another small brown trout! to some interesting people. I’m always happy The trout were rapidly becoming a ‘nuisance’ to chat on the bank, and I’m not bothered fish, but on my next cast, I lost an absolute if the people I meet are anglers or not, so monster of a fish which threw the hook at the discussions ranged from the Fire Service net! I estimate that this trout was going on (and its impending demise) dogs, new club for five pounds, a worthy adversary of light members, personal tragedy, and lure fishing… tackle, and a very disappointing loss! More an altogether eclectic mix! grayling followed, then more trout, and this After a resounding, dismal fishing failure, continued for the next hour as I silently picked I wanted to catch something (it makes this my way through the dead reeds, brambles, and much easier to write!) so grabbed the light overhanging trees, swinging the lure into spots lure gear, and travelled to a new stretch of the which may be inaccessible to other methods of River Churnet on a local ticket, run by Fenton fishing; great fun! and District Angling Society. For years, I’ve Trial and error revealed that a very slow crossed the river, over the bridge in the centre recovery was best, the lure allowed to bump of Alton village, and often had the urge to slowly over the river bed, before being lifted explore the banks, but never been bothered into mid-water and left to settle again. Some of to find out who managed it. What an error of the bites were tentative, but the majority were judgement that was… I joined the club last rod rattling thumps, usually right under my year, mainly for the canals, but then realised feet, as fish hit the lure at the very last moment. that this pristine stretch of small river was mine for the asking, in black and white, on the I lost a couple of hefty specimens, a blunt hook the cause, but finished the day with around new club card! twenty fish, many from spots that most anglers I do love fishing small, intimate rivers; wouldn’t look twice at because of the amount creeping along the banks, careful not to break any twigs, each foot placed gently down before of snags and other cover. That’s why I love moving forward, and dropping my lure into a this method so much; it really does give an small undercut, or using the current to swing opportunity to try something different, fishing it beneath a likely raft of vegetation before a mobile, lightweight tactic which is simply waiting to see what lies beneath. To me, it’s great fun, and can produce the unexpected. If probably my favourite way to spend a few you haven’t joined the light lure revolution, solitary hours exploring, and the River Churnet then you really should, why not give it a go? is a blessing indeed, packed with features, and for such a small river, a surprising amount of quality fish. There are grayling, trout, chub, perch, pike, even roach and bream within the slow bends and fast runs, and anywhere can produce if you get it right, and the beauty of it is, you never know what you will catch next! I slid down to the water’s edge, and flicked out a small rubber shad on a very light jig head. The water is often less than three feet deep, so a heavy jig is likely to catch on the bottom before I can connect after casting.

The County Senior League returned on Saturday for the first time in 2017, bringing to an end a two week hiatus for the Christmas and New Year period. It was a full league fixture list, apart from a handful of teams who were involved in the Doncaster Senior Cup. Premier Division It was a perfect start to 2017 for league leaders Swallownest FC, who beat defending champions Frecheville 1-0 at Swallownest Miners Welfare on Saturday. The day got even better for Swallownest, as goals from Sam Scriven, Tim Council and an own goal gave AFC Penistone Church a 3-1 home win over second placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. At the end of play, Swallownest lead the Premier Division by nine points. Fifth placed Jubilee Sports continued their good pre-Christmas form, with a 4-0 away win over Wombwell Main. The win is Jubilee’s fifth in six games and means they only trail fourth placed Swinton Athletic on goal difference. Goals from Luke Marsden, Jake Bedford, Lee Elsworth and an own goal gave North Gawber Colliery a 4-1 win over MIllmoor Juniors at Grange Park. Not to be outdone, Handsworth Parramore Reserves were also 4-1 winners away, as they beat Athersley Recreation Reserves at Sheerien Park. Division One The top of Division One is very tightly contested. Previous leaders Wickersley FC were displaced by Sheffield Bankers, who beat them 1-0 at Hillsborough Park Arena on Saturday. In fact all the previous top three were beaten on the weekend. Oughtibridge WMFC dropped to third, as they lost 2-1 away against now fifth placed South Kirkby Colliery. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 also dropped a place, to fourth, after a 4-2 loss at home to High Green Villa. Sixth placed Brinsworth Whitehill lost 7-0 away against free-scoring Grimethorpe Sports in seventh. There is just four points separating leaders Sheffield Bankers and eighth placed AFC Dronfield, who were also big winners on Saturday, beating Davy FC 6-0 at home. Gavin Davis scored both goals for Caribbean Sports, as they beat Millmoor Juniors Reserves 2-1 at the Caribbean Sports Club. The win is Caribbean’s fourth-in-a-row. Hat-tricks from Richard Dey and Alex Butcher gave Silkstone United a 6-0 home win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. The win gives Silkstone a eight point gap to third bottom Davy FC. Division Two North Goals from Kyle Snowden, Daniel Henighan, Richard Shipley and Ricky Berry (pen)

gave Euroglaze FC a 4-1 win over Working Wonders at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium. The goal conceded by Euroglaze is the first for three games. South Kirkby had ended 2016 conceding five, six and seven in their last three games, but 2017 is a new start. They beat Wombwell Main Development 2-1 at Wombwell Main Cricket Club on Saturday. The won takes them above Wombwell and into eighth position. Division Two South League leaders KIveton Park registered their 11th win of the season, as goals from Matt Plant, Sean Ebbs and James Lawton (2) gave them a 4-1 away win over Millmoor Juniors Reserves. Second placed New Bohemians also started the year with a win; beating Renishaw Rangers 2-1 at the SHU Sports Ground. Kiveton retain their four point lead. Bottom side Maltby Main Reserves claimed their third win of the season, with an entertaining 5-3 away win over Davy FC Reserves. Maltby remain bottom but are now just one point behind second bottom Renishaw. Caribbean Sports Reserves climbed into fifth place, after a 3-2 win over fourth placed Sheffield Medics. Caribbean are now unbeaten in six games. Sheffield Lane Top ended a run of back-toback 2-1 losses, by recording a 2-1 win of their own. NO EXCUSES SAYS WARNE AFTER CUP EXIT Rotherham United caretaker manager Paul Warne says he will look to inject a new lease of life into his side after disappointment in the Emirates FA Cup which saw them defeated 3-2 by Oxford United. The Millers’ interim chief explained that he would have liked for his team to have embarked on a run in the cup competition whilst conceding that their performance against the U’s on Saturday was not up to their usual standard. “To have a little cup run would have been nice. I think it is evident that we need to freshen things up with some new faces, and try and look forward to the next part of the season,” Warne explained after the game. “We are doing everything we can behind the scenes to do that. I thought a few looked jaded and few of them under-performed which is sad, because they prepared exactly the same way and did exactly the same thing. I don’t know whether they put too much into the Christmas games, but it was disappointing.” Warne also explained that a slow start to proceedings in Rotherham proved costly but admitted there was a marked improvement to their performance after the restart. “We started the game poorly. I have been speaking this week and I felt that it was a level game today, Oxford are doing well in League One and we aren’t doing great in The Championship so I knew it was going to be a competitive game. I sent the lads out and said that you have to be positive on the ball, you have to be brave. “They obviously missed their penalty but they

deserved to be in front. We went in at half-time and I said some truths and I questioned a few players and their desire to play. I thought that second half for a large part of it, we were good. “I thought in that half that we were the only team that was going to win to be honest when it was 1-1. Wardy may have gone down and got a penalty but he stayed on his feet and didn’t get rewarded for that. It was a sloppy goal conceded for their second, someone should have come off the post but I don’t want to say too much until I have seen it again. “We were going for it, so they got another, then we got one but it was disappointing. I thought that we lost all our shape and everything that we have done well in the last six or seven games didn’t happen today. I have to explain what happened.” The Millers were dealt an early blow after Peter Odemwingie, who had been named to start on the teamsheet, fell foul to a calf injury in the warm up, but Warne admitted that was not the reason for their side’s defeat. They were also up against three former Millers in the Oxford United ranks, with Warne explaining that he was more than aware of the threat their returns would pose at AESSEAL

New York Stadium. “If I am being honest, I set the team out like I have done every other week, it didn’t help when Peter Odemwingie went down in the warm-up which was a blow ahead of the game. All the same we just weren’t good enough,” he continued. “I thought it was written in the stars for Chris

Maguire to score when he got the penalty, but Ryan Taylor did come back and score. “He played here a few years ago, I know him well and they deserved their goal at the time because they were the better side in the firsthalf. I thought that we were the better side in the second half but it wasn’t enough.”

NEW BEESTIN DEAL CELEBRATORY TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY KIT Alfie Beestin has signed a new contract keeping him at Rovers until the summer of 2019. The attacking midfielder penned a oneyear deal in August to join from Tadcaster Albion, and has since made eight first-team appearances. He said: “I’m really pleased, to get another two years is really pleasing and the pressure is off a bit. “i feel like the gaffer wants me. He feels like I have a part to play, and I’m not here just to sit on the bench.” Alfie made an immediate impact with a goalscoring debut in the Checkatrade Trophy in August. He added: “It was a big game for me, I was a bit nervous but it was the most important goal I’ve ever scored.”

The club commenced its 10-year celebrations at the Keepmoat Stadium by welcoming back former heroes, honouring our most loyal supporters, and will soon release a 10-year celebration book. To continue the celebrations, we would like to involve the fans as much as possible in this momentous occasion. As ever we would like you to have your say on the on 2017-18 kit. This year the new strip will feature iconic events and key players from the past 10 years. The idea followed consultations with the supporters board and feedback to the In Rovers We Trust survey, allowing fans to share their personal highlights from Rovers’ past 10 years. This content is to be chosen by the Rovers fan base, by submitting your favourite event(s) or player(s), with the most frequent requests being selected. The most popular requests will be integral to Rovers’ home shirt design. The away shirt will also include features representing our 10-year anniversary, although its location on the shirt is yet to be finalised. The senior squad will wear the unique design for the 2017-18 campaign and can be kept as a

valuable piece of memorabilia, signifying this historical landmark. An example for the content could be: • Doncaster Rovers 5 – 1 Southend United • Doncaster Rovers 2 – 0 Sheffield United • League One Championship May 2013 • Billy Sharp • James Coppinger In order to submit your request you can include your suggestions via email to supporterservices@clubdoncaster.co.uk with a subject heading “10-year Rovers shirt 2017”, or you can submit a paper entry to the Club Doncaster Box Office or the Club Doncaster shop. All entries must be submitted before 5pm on January 21, 2017. Doncaster Rovers hope all supporters new and old enjoy considering their favourite moments of the past 10 seasons. The club do, however, retain the right to have final choice on content, if selected requests are presumed to be offensive, harmful or in submitted in bad taste.

WILDER’S SOUTHEND REACTION

Chris Wilder was understandably delighted following Saturday’s impressive 4-2 victory over Phil Brown’s Southend United. Ethan Ebanks-Landell, Jack O’Connell, Caolan Lavery and Kieron Freeman were all on the scoresheet in Essex as United made it six league wins on the spin and in the process extended the lead at the summit to four points.

Speaking after a dominate display, Wilder beamed: “It was a big performance and a big result, especially on the back of Southend’s current form. “This is a tough place to come to, Southend are a very good side who hammered Bradford and I’m glad we don’t have to come here again. “We got out of the traps and we should have done to them what they did to us at Bramall Lane.

“But we’ve taken great satisfaction in how we’ve beaten them, given their experience on and off the field and the way we dismantled in the second-half was fantastic.” Wilder added: “Credit to Southend, it’s tough coming here and although we’re disappointed with their second goal, they never gave up, but in all honesty, we should have been out of sight by that

point. “Once we got ourselves going in the second-half we steamrolled a very good side. We knew it would be a big result if we could win here and the rest of the division will be thinking the same. “If we can go to Roots Hall and win 4-2 we can get a result anywhere, we were excellent in and out of possession and we’re deservedly in a great position.”

EE-L TO STAY AT THE LANE It can now be confirmed that Ethan Ebanks-Landell will remain at Bramall Lane until the end of the season. The defender, who joined the Blades on a season-long loan from Wolves in August, has become a fans’ favourite at S2 during the firsthalf of the season and has played a major role

in helping United rise to the summit of League One. His parent club held a recall clause option in January as part of the terms of the loan, but following discussions between all parties it has now been agreed that the 24-year-old will remain at Bramall Lane. Ebanks-Landell has made 21 appearances

as a Blade, scoring five times, the last of which was the opener at Southend United on Saturday. And to emphasise the importance of him to the squad, he has only lost once in red and white during the aforementioned spell. Manager Chris Wilder is understandably delighted with the news,

he remarked: “Ethan has been superb and it’s fantastic for us and him that he will be here until the end of the campaign. “We’ve had constant dialogue with Wolves throughout his loan and we have to thank them for giving us permission for him to stay for the remainder of the season.”

CARRUTHERS INJURY UPDATE Chris Wilder is relatively happy with the result of the scan Samir Carruthers underwent on Monday. The midfielder is expected to be out of action for between two to four weeks and has already begun his rehabilitation. Boss Wilder commented: “We are relatively happy with the outcome, he’s strained ligaments and our medical team are

managing the situation in-house. In the 14 minutes he played at Southend he gave everyone a glimpse of what he’s about and the score moved from 2-1 to 4-1 when he was on the pitch.” The substitute appearance at Southend was the midfielder’s debut after joining the Blades last week from MK Dons for an undisclosed fee.

NEW DATE FOR OXFORD CLASH United’s proposed Sky Bet League One trip to Oxford United scheduled for later this

month - will need to be re-arranged. It is due to Oxford progressing to the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup, which will be played over the weekend of 28th/29th January. www.sufc.co.uk will have confirmation of the new date and ticket news in due course.

ETHAN EXTENDS BLADES STAY WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Ethan EbanksLandell will remain and has an impressive a Sheffield United five goals to his player until the name. Wolves did end of the season have the option to after successful recall the 24-year-old negotiations with this month, but head Wolverhampton coach Paul Lambert Wanderers. felt it was better for The strong defender Ebanks-Landell to has made 21 get playing time at appearances in red the Blades rather than and white this season, being on the periphery

at Wolves. EbanksLandell signed a new deal with Wolves before heading back to Sheffield to continue preparations for the game at Walsall. Speaking about the news to sufc.co.uk, Chris Wilder said: “Ethan has been superb and it’s fantastic for us and him that he will be here until the end

of the campaign.” The Blades have only lost one of the 21 games that Ebanks-Landell has featured, Wilder will hope for a similar return as the season progresses. Wilder also expects to complete the permanent signing of Daniel Lafferty from Burnley. The left-back has had a successful loan period at the Lane this season, and Wilder suggested that a medical and final details will be completed this week. In other transfer news, Reece Brown has departed the club after a short spell in which he made five appearances. After leaving the

Lane, the 25-yearold signed a deal with his former club Bury. New signing Samir Carruthers is expected to be out for two to four weeks after straining his

knee ligaments during his Blades debut. However, Wilder expressed that he was pleased that the injury was not as worse as first feared after a scan on Monday.

FERNANDO FORESTIERI EXTENDS OWLS CONTRACT Fernando Forestieri has extended his contract with the Owls by a further year, committing until summer 2020. The 26-year-old joined for an undisclosed fee from Premier League side Watford in August 2015, made his debut following the first international break of the season away at Burnley and went

on to enjoy the finest campaign of his career in 2015/16. The dynamic Italian struck a career-best tally of 15 goals in his maiden Owls term and was a pivotal figure in Wednesday’s push for promotion via the play-offs. Forestieri’s energy all over the field and ability to change a game in an instant endeared

him to Wednesdayites, who voted the talisman Player of the Year for 2015/16. The coveted forward has bagged a further six goals so far from 21 appearances in 2016/17, including crucial winners in games against promotion rivals Aston Villa and Huddersfield. He scored three in three towards the end of 2016

versus Fulham, Wolves and Preston which led to his swfc.co.uk November Player of the Month award, as voted for by Owls fans. Committing his long term future to Wednesday serves as a welcome boost for the club ahead of a key Championship clash next time out at Hillsborough against the Terriers.

CARLOS ON BORO CUP DEFEAT Carlos Carvalhal was content with the Owls’ performance, but not the scoreline, in their 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup third round at the Riverside. Wednesday matched the Premier League side until the 58th minute when Grant Leadbitter’s free kick found the back of the net. A minute later Daniel Ayala was sent off for the Teesiders after a late challenge on Fernando Forestieri, but as the Owls went on the offensive, the home side grabbed two more goals from Alvaro Negredo and Marten de Roon.

Carvalhal said: “I think we matched Middlesbrough in the game. “Neither goalkeeper had much to do and we kept the ball well, it was very even. “We didn’t get some luck and they scored the free kick for the first goal. “We finished the game with five attackers on the pitch, which shows how we tried everything to get back into the match. “The other two goals are just what happens in football when you go all out for the attack to try and get a goal, which is what we did.

“I don’t have anything bad to say about my players, we win as a team and we lose as team. “They played well and matched a Premier League team in their

home ground, so I can be happy with this, but obviously I am not happy with the scoreline.” The Owls return to league action next week at home to Huddersfield.
