NEW YEAR - NEW YOU AT MOOR MARKET It’s more often known as the place to buy fresh produce, flowers, crafts and gifts – rather than somewhere to get fit. But to mark the New Year, the Moor Market is hosting a range of special events on Saturdays, focused on getting customers feeling good. On Saturday 14 January, at 11am there will be a presentation from Wise Choice Nutrition, followed by an exercise demonstration from SWEAT gym at 12noon and a presentation from Weight Watchers at 1pm. The following Saturday, 21 January, there will be a presentation on Mindfulness at 2pm and on Saturday 28 January
Jane Chapman of image consultancy True Colours will be in the market offering style advice. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Lots of people choose January as a time to make a fresh start in terms of their health, fitness and nutrition, so it’s only fitting that we reflect that in this month’s events programme. “We know we have one of the best events and marketing programmes around, and last year hosted attractions such as BBC Music Day, the Tramlines music festival, the Youdan Trophy exhibition, monthly vintage fairs and the Snow Queen
and Jack Frost experience for children. “It’s good to start 2017 with a line-up of lots of things to do, which help to bring customers new and old back into the market and also add an extra element to their shopping experience.” Meanwhile, the “Sheffield Says” art installation is also now in the Moor Market, Sheffield, which aims to provide a new platform for creative voices in Sheffield. The work takes the form of an imposing “S” sculpture at which people can express their artistic ideas through words and images. These ideas can then be printed out for the general public using low-fi thermal wax transfer.
Recent figures have revealed that 2016 was a great year for the Moor Market, with a six per cent increase in shoppers compared to 2015. The wider Moor area is currently being redeveloped, and a plan is underway to further improve the market for traders and customers alike,
free estimate daytime or evening call
so that it is ready when the nearby regeneration works are completed. The redevelopment scheme includes the opening of new shops and the creation of the Light entertainment complex, which is set to open in March with a multi-screen cinema and restaurants.

NO EXCUSE FOR DOG OWNERS THANKS TO NEW SCHEME Doncaster Council has become the first local authority in the north of England to trial an innovative scheme to tackle dog fouling. No excuse for dog owners thanks to new scheme. Working with Swedish company Tikspac, the council has installed free dog waste bag dispensers at two local parks in an attempt to crack down on careless
dog owners. The two areas chosen for the trial, Sandall Park and Bentley Park, will have stations located at their entrances offering free waste bags to dog walkers. This leaves no excuse for careless owners who don’t pick up after their dogs. Cabinet member for Regeneration, Cllr Joe Blackham, visited Sandall Park to meet with Don Crabtree, one
REGIONAL EDITION
of the leaders of the Friends of Sandall Park group. Cllr Blackham said: “We are hopeful that this trial scheme will lead to a fall in the number of dog fouling incidents in the parks, and if it proves successful then we will consider introducing it across Doncaster. “We are committed to making our public spaces cleaner, greener and more enjoyable for
residents and visitors, and this kind of innovative scheme is a great way to do it. “We are the first council in the north
of England to try this, and it reflects our commitment to improving the environment through our This is my Doncaster campaign.”

COMMIT TO HELP YOUR CHILD GET FIT AND HAVE FUN IN 2017 The New Year is always when the gyms are at their fullest, people make promises to live a healthier lifestyle and more fruits and vegetables are consumed. Unfortunately, by February many people break these resolutions and slip back into bad habits. It has been proven that to make healthy choices, it is important to make it into a part of everyday life and that is exactly the same for children. By enrolling them in a performing arts class, they are committing to turn up each week and participate in a class that is good for both mind and body. When considering exercise and children, the important part is to make fitness fun, or they will be turned off it for life before they’ve not had the opportunity to develop healthy habits. Razzamataz Theatre Schools have an ethos where performing arts is about creating fit and active children while they are learning about the world and having fun. Participation in dance, drama and singing classes enable students to focus on different skills than they learn in school and offer an outlet for those with a passion for creativity and performance. “Leading a fit and healthy lifestyle is not just about the foods we eat and the exercise we take,” says Helen Principal of Razzamataz Sheffield. “It is equally about creating well rounded, confident children who are able to empathise with others and put their feelings first. All these emotions and life lessons can be played out throughout performing arts classes and by doing so, we can help to create happy and healthy children who will reach their full potential.” Razzamataz Sheffield offers classes in drama, dance and singing for children aged 2 to 18. As well as offering a diverse curriculum covering both the worlds of classic West End musical theatre and commercial pop and street dance, an important
part of the classes is preparing for performing opportunities so all children have the chance to step into the limelight. A key message for the theatre school and one that has been incorporated into all marketing materials is for students to ‘Create your best role.’ The message and meaning behind this is to show that no matter what your role is in life, be the best that you can be. This is true for performers but equally just as relevant for everyone from nurses, to lawyers to builders. “Being your best self is about being the healthiest in both mind and body that you can be,” adds Helen. “Children naturally have lots of energy and it is important that we harness this and their creativity to steer them in a positive direction in life.” Razzamataz creates ‘triple threat performers’ meaning students leave being skilled in dance, drama and singing. During their time at Razzamataz, they will cover lots of different genres from classic West End musical theatre through to acting for camera, street dance and pop singing. There are lots of opportunities to perform locally and on London’s West End stage and many students are securing professional work, filming adverts and performing professionally on stage. The fun classes are for all children whatever their background or ability and there is a strong focus on keeping fit and active, having fun and making friends. Classes start at age four and go on to 18 and there are lots of opportunities to perform giving children the opportunity to grow in confidence. To start your New Year off the healthy way, Razzamataz is offering free sessions throughout January and February. To enquire about joining Razzamataz Sheffield contact Helen on sheffield@ razzamataz.co.k or 07979 189177. Alternatively visit sheffield.razzamataz.co.uk for more information.

ALBERT SNODGRASS Don’t spell part backwards. It’s a trap.
Statistics show that people who have more birthdays live longer. Did you hear about the dog that was also a magician? It was a Labracadabrador. I went to the chip shop and asked for a jumbo sausage. The bloke said “it won’t be long” I said “it better be!” Did anyone get that text gong around? You’ve won £100 or tickets for an Elvis tribute concert. Press 1 for the money or 2 for the show. I jumped into the sea today even though I didn’t want to. My friends pier pressured me into it. What’s the difference between a well dressed man on a a bicycle and a poorly dressed man on a tricycle? Attire! What’s the worst thing about ancient history class? The teachers tend to Babylon. My wife is on one of these tropical fruit juice diets, the house is full of the stuff! It’s enough to make a mango crazy. How do you make antifreeze? Steal her blanket. How do you find Will Smith in the snow? You look for the fresh prints.

TREASURE SEEKERS PREPARE TO ‘POTTER’ ABOUT FOR ROUNDABOUT CHARITY A new Harry Potter inspired scavenger hunt is coming to Sheffield in the name of charity this March. Potter Hunt is the brainchild of four Sheffield Hallam students and will see families and friends take to the streets to solve Potter inspired riddles from one location to the next. All funds raised from entry costs will be donated to Roundabout, a youth homeless charity based in Sheffield. Roundabout has been supporting young people aged 16-24 for nearly 40 years by providing shelter, support and life skills. Through a variety of services, the charity aims to support and empower young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to learn the necessary skills they need to become independent. Mary Goacher, who helped develop the scavenger hunt at Marekiva Events, said: “We are excited to launch the first ever Potter Hunt in Sheffield. It is all in the name of charity, so for a great cause.
“We are inviting the public to enter in teams of four to go around different locations solving Potter riddles, once they have solved them they will be given a piece of a map to lead them onto the next location. “The winning team is the first to reach the final venue with the complete map, where prizes will be awarded. We think this will appeal to all ages and whether you are a devote Harry Potter fan or not, the experience will be a truly
magical one! “We hope as many teams as possible will get creative and come dressed as their favourite Potter characters.” Potter Hunt will take place on 12 March 2017 at 2pm, beginning in Sheffield city centre. Teams can enter for free if they raise a minimum of £40 sponsorship for Roundabout. Alternatively, the entry fee is £20 per team for a ticket. Visit www.b3002443.wixsite. com/potterhunt to enter and find out more information.

PLANS TO BUILD NEW COUNCIL HOMES IN SHEFFIELD The City Council’s plans to provide an extra 1,000 council homes are still ongoing but today, the authority is revealing that it intends to build more of these than originally thought. These will include independent living schemes for older people and the council also hopes to provide extra supported housing for people with learning disabilities. The extra homes will be provided by 2020/21. Councillor Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Housing at Sheffield City Council, said: “Increasing social housing is still a priority as the need for good affordable housing has never been greater. “We acquire more council homes by either buying existing properties or building them ourselves. Building them gives us more control though and helps us get the properties we need. That’s why we’re maintaining our plans to provide an extra 1,000 council homes in Sheffield but we will be
building more of them ourselves. This includes supported housing to help people live independently, as well as more family homes.” There are around 40,000 council homes in Sheffield but this figure is reducing as properties are sold under the national Right to Buy scheme. The authority is almost one third of the way toward its target of 1,000 extra council homes. Since 2015/16 it has bought an extra 285 properties and is building 89 new council homes which are almost complete. By the end of the programme, if the authority is successful in accessing national house building funding, it is estimated that the council will have built around 450 of this total. The authority’s council housing plan also sets out plans to: • Reduce the community heating charge by 10 per cent for tenants who receive metered heating. • Set a single flat rate for garage rent instead of the current system of different prices across the city. • Prepare for new housing policies introduced nationally and to support tenants who are affected by them.

Depaul UK to run new Supported Lodgings service in Sheffield The charity, which already works with young people at risk of homelessness in the city, has been awarded a contract by Sheffield City Council to pilot this exciting new accommodation service in Sheffield. The Supported Lodgings Service will offer vulnerable young people aged 16-21 facing homelessness, a safe and secure place to call home with a household in the community for up to 12 months. Lodgings providers give up their spare room and offer emotional and practical support to a young person to help them develop the skills they need to live independently in the future. Nightstop Manager Amy Smith said: “The young people using Supported Lodgings don’t just need a roof over their heads, they also need a stable and secure home environment in which they are supported to mature and develop. “It’s a chance for members of the local community to make a tangible difference in the life of a young person facing homelessness.” Councillor Cate McDonald, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are commissioning this new service so that young people who become homeless have more support, which will hopefully give them long-term and lasting help. “I’m really pleased the council
is continuing to work with Depaul and would like to thank sincerely all the generous people who are willing to open up their homes to a young person in need.” The scheme differs from the Nightstop service already offered by Depaul UK in Sheffield, which places young people at risk of homelessness in a volunteer’s spare room on a night by night basis in an emergency. Supported Lodgings providers receive a rent payment of around £150 per week in addition to extensive training and ongoing support to ensure they are well-equipped for the role. Supported Lodgings projects already run in several locations around the UK, including in
York, Merseyside and Norfolk, where the scheme has been successful in helping young people to achieve more. Amy said: “We’re sure that the people of Sheffield, who have been so forthcoming in opening their homes to Nightstop guests, will show the same compassion in coming forward to find out more about becoming a Supported Lodgings provider.” If you would like to find out more about becoming a Supported Lodgings provider, attending one of the regular information sessions or booking a speaker from Depaul UK for your group, please call 07920 650579 or email Sheffield.supportedlodgings@depaulcharity. org.uk

This calm and contemporary flagship studio is headed by Niri Patel and he is keen to let people know that fit20 studios don’t have music, mirrors or masses of people. The training consists of slow and controlled movements in an air conditioned studio which means no sweat and no need to change into gym clothes- this makes it perfect for slotting into a busy lifestyle between work and picking the kids up from school. All of your sessions are

the fact that they travel every week from Knaresborough is testament to the the benefits of the fit20 training. City partners who work together to promote the responsible management of licensed premises have been recognised once again as Sheffield is shortlisted for a prestigious national award. Sheffield is one of only three finalists for the national Best Bar None awards, up against Durham and Bedfordshire. The announcement will be made at a Parliamentary reception at the end of the month. The news comes hot on the heels of celebrations earlier this week after the city was told it had retained Purple Flag status, recognising its vibrant and safe evening and night-time economy. And last year the Sheffield partners scooped two of the national Best Bar None awards. Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID) Sergeant Matthew Burdett said: “I am delighted to hear that once again we are in the running for this flagship award and send out a big thank you to everyone who gets involved in this important work
for the city. “Sheffield is now recognised as a leader in this field of work and we are looked to for advice and best practice – a credit to everyone involved.” Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “I am extremely pleased that all the hard work we in Sheffield do in this area has been rewarded, and we’ve made it through to the final of the Best Bar None awards. “With its huge selection of bars and restaurants, as well as a thriving theatre district and impressive array of cultural attractions, we know Sheffield is a fun and safe place to enjoy a night out. However, it is fantastic to see this recognised on a national level. “We are leading the way when it comes to providing such an eclectic mix of places to eat, drink, relax and socialise, with so many quirky and independent places to go as well as the large chains. I hope that Sheffield city centre will continue to go from
strength to strength, with the imminent opening of the new Light leisure and entertainment complex and the creation of the New Retail Quarter which is now underway.” Tracey Ford, of Sheffield City Council Drug and Alcohol Coordination Team, is the Best Bar None Coordinator. She said: “To win two out of the three national awards last year was a fantastic achievement for the city, but to be in the top three again is simply amazing. “We try to ensure that the Sheffield scheme continues to improve by listening to our licensed premises and other organisations. The success of the scheme is due to the dedication and passion of our partnership working.” Best Bar None is a National Award Scheme supported by the Home Office and the drinks industry and is aimed primarily at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol licensed premises.
EARN FREE TICKETS FOR THIS YEAR’S GIGANTIC LEEDS FESTIVAL Fancy earning free tickets and exclusive rewards for Yorkshire’s Biggest Live Music Festival? Well, if you sign up to the official Leeds Festival Ambassador Scheme you can earn a free ticket for every 8 tickets that you sell to your friends. You'll also be able to earn additional rewards such as free merchandise and side of stage access with a friend to see an act of your choice!
Some of the incentive available include: • Sell 8 Tickets – Earn 1 free Weekend Ticket • Sell 16 Tickets – Earn 2 free Weekend Tickets. • Sell 24 Tickets – Earn 3 free Weekend Tickets and a free festival t-shirt.
• Sell 32 Tickets – Earn 4 free Weekend Tickets, free festival t-shirt and access side of stage for an act of your choice with a friend!
Here's how it works: • Join the official Leeds Festival Ambassador Scheme by visiting and signing up at www.leedsfestival.com • A Leeds Festival representative will call you to explain the process and set you up with tickets to sell. • Sell 8 tickets to your friends securely online. • Go to Leeds Festival for free. • Continue to sell tickets to earn more free tickets and rewards!
Awards as well as getting two Best Headliner nominations for both Biffy Clyro and Foals. This year’s festival is looking to carry on their fine run of form with Rock Giants Muse already being announced as headliners supported by Major Lazer and Bastille (who picked up four NME nominations of their own) plus a whole host of top live acts and UK exclusives. There has only been one Line-up announcement so far but they are guaranteed to be revealing many more attention grabbing performers in the coming months. Full weekend tickets are now on sale with an installment plan available.
The 2016 Reading & Leeds Festivals were nominated for Best Festival last week in the NME

WORRYING INCREASE IN POTHOLE BREAKDOWNS Potholes could hit UK roads at an “unprecedented rate” over the coming months, the RAC has warned. Released to coincide with National Pothole Day, figures from the RAC Pothole Index show the organisation was called out to 24% more pothole-related breakdowns in the final quarter of 2016 than in the year before. It claims “urgent remedial repairs” are needed to reduce the risk of further damage to vehicles or injuries to motorcyclists and cyclists. October to December represented the first annual increase in pothole-related breakdowns the final quarter of a year since 2013. Chief among the vehicle complaints caused by substandard quality roads are distorted wheels, broken suspension springs and damaged shock absorbers. Commenting, David Bizley, RAC chief engineer says the numbers are particularly worrying in light of the fact the period saw its lowest rainfall for over 10 years. The wet weather is usually catalyst for the
emergence of potholes. “If the first three months of 2017 prove to be both wet and cold, potholes are likely to appear at an unprecedented rate which would inevitably stretch local authority repair resources to their limit,” he added. “It is insufficient investment in preventative maintenance, such as resurfacing, which is ultimately to blame.” Alan Mackenzie, chairman of the Asphalt Industry Alliance, said: “Long-term underfunding means that the local road network is deteriorating at a faster rate than it can be repaired.” The Department for Transport (DfT) on Friday unveiled plans for high-definition cameras to be fitted to bin lorries to spot road surface problems which can be treated before they become potholes. The DfT claims the system, which is being trialled by councils in York and Thurrock, Essex, could "revolutionise the way potholes are identified and managed". Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: "This Government is investing record
“We Can Come To You”
amounts improving and maintaining highways across the country to help motorists. "The funding we have allocated is focused on relieving congestion and providing important upgrades to ensure our roads are fit for the future." Of 1,755 drivers surveyed last year in the RAC’s Report on Motoring, 14% listed the state and maintenance of local loads as their biggest concern – the largest proportion for any concern. Furthermore, just over half (51%) thought the road quality in their area had worsened over the past year, with potholes by far the main culprit.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’d like to tell you more about relatively new company Bank Statement Clothing, a company I was invited to join late last year, and whose clothing is now ‘uniform’ for my angling. I’ve always been wary of endorsing any clothing company personally, after all, it isn’t really the clothing that catches fish, but with Bank Statement, there was just enough to pique my interest, so I decided to find out more… In truth, I was recommended by a current team member, who (very generously) considered that I may be able to add something to the brand, so I was happy to receive my first products just before winter really started to bite. After my invite, I requested delivery of a camouflage hoody, a set of ‘RevelatorZ’ polarising glasses, hand towel, and camera tripod. Like a kid at Christmas, these were rapidly opened, and inspected to find out more. I find that a hoody is probably one of the most popular items of fishing attire that I see on the bank, especially if adorned with the angler’s favourite brand, and with good reason; they are comfortable, easy to wear, have a hood, and keep the wearer nice and warm. It’s that simple. The camouflage Bank Statement hoody fits all the criteria, is well made, and does the job it’s designed for, so it’s now a fundamental part of my clobber on the bank. What makes it stand out though? Don’t get me wrong, I’ll never be a fashion writer, but I know if something is going to last. Every seam is double stitched, the pocket is large and accommodating, and the drawstrings in the hood stay where they are supposed to, rather than pulling around in the wash to leave an annoying conundrum to be sorted when next worn. It’s washed well too, having been used twice weekly for the last five months or so, it still retains its ‘fluff’ on the inside, and shape on the outside, nor has it shrunk. It’s drizzle proof to some extent too, so standing out in the fog and rain doesn’t result in a weighty, shapeless piece of clothing which you can’t wait to take off! I use polarising glasses an awful lot, summer or winter, and consider them a vital part of an angler’s toolbox. The ‘RevelatorZ’ are available in five colour options, and do exactly what they say on the tin, cutting surface glare and revealing what lies beneath the water. They are stylish too, and I was even happy to take them on a recent trip to fashion capital Rome, where they doubled up to protect my eyes from city grit and dust thanks to hardwearing lenses, and made me the object of adoration for many Italian ladies! (I may have made that last bit up). I also took the incredibly tasteful Bank Statement polo shirt, resplendent in orange and black, with a subtle logo, which was comfortable to wear, and kept me cool in rising Italian temperatures; perfect summer fishing attire, but smart enough to wear elsewhere too!

To take pictures in Italy, I slipped the Bank Statement tripod into my luggage, and carried it effortlessly around Rome to take some steady images of incredible architecture, and some smashing ‘selfies’. Obviously, for the angler, it’s ideal for the prized catch shot, using a smartphone or camera, and can be folded out in less than a second, and ready for use in under five. Three sturdy legs (it is a tripod after all) spring out to support a tilting, threaded head, or the attached spring loaded phone holder, and it really is something which is pocket sized with big potential. It also fits nicely in the midriff pocket of the hoody, which makes it ideal for mobile sessions where a minimum of kit is required. Don’t just use it for fishing though, it’s an ideal accessory for the family holiday, or when out walking and climbing too, but it currently forms my ‘go to’ tool for my solitary angling sessions when I need to take a hands free catch shot. Finally, I’ve been lucky enough to preview the ‘winter trouser’. This is by far my favourite addition to the Bank Statement catalogue so far, and has provided me with plenty of protection throughout the colder months as I’ve fished through the winter. Cut from ‘moleskin’ heavy cotton fabric, these are the ideal trouser for the mobile OR stationary angler, and have proved to be resistant to thorns and brambles as I’ve battled my way along overgrown river banks, protected me from wind chill in plunging temperatures, and offered plenty of space for wallet, keys, phone, lures, handkerchief, and all manner of other things the cold weather angler pockets to keep close at hand. The material is breathable too, so not only does it keep the wearer very warm, it doesn’t encourage sweating either, which helps keep the warmth comfortable. The hems are finished with an elastic adjuster, so they can be snugly worn over boots without leaving room for any drafts, pockets are finished with poppers, and are deep enough to provide loads of storage, and the belt loops are sufficient for a proper belt to support the heavy trouser. Zip fly and button ensure they stay in place, but are easy to undo when required (especially with cold hands) and are a pleasing olive green in colour. I really hope that these become an addition to the clothing range, they are sure to be a huge seller, not just with anglers, but shooters, hikers, and hunters too… So far, that’s my experience with Bank Statement, and it’s all been good. All clothing and accessories have performed superbly, all have lasted well, and all continue to provide sterling work during my sessions. There is however, much more to come from Bank Statement, so why not look at www. bankstatementclothing.com and see what’s on offer?
A HIDDEN GEM OF A GYM Words & Pics by Marc Cooper
Now the Christmas and New Year festivities are a distant memory, the countdown to Summer 2017 is well and truly on! Gyms across the Steel City are set to be busy over the next few weeks as people try desperately to keep their New Years resolutions, working hard to get their bodies back in shape after all the excesses of the festive period. Personally I was no different there’s quite a few mince pies and pints of lager currently sitting around my waistline and my good lady has not been slow to point this out to me! However the thought of queuing at a typical city centre “pay-asyou-go” gym in January is not my idea of fun. Waiting for people to finish on the equipment and not being able to use the stuff you want when you want is a frustrating experience. Therefore I was delighted to take up the offer of a visit and introductory session at Davy’s Sporting Club! Davys Sporting Gym in Darnall offers a completely different experience. The Gym is stocked with a full range of the usual equipment - treadmills, rowing machines etc. - but in addition Davys stands out with its large weights section
located in the bottom half of the gym. The changing rooms have recently been refurbished and they now offer a DD payment scheme to make membership an affordable option. To make this an even more attractive proposition, the gym is currently offering upto 50% off all new gym memberships for Direct Debit Customers! The Gym is open 7 days a week throughout the year, and it is the same flat rate charge whatever time you visit - there are no peak

or off-peak pricies to worry about! And another bonus - membership of the gym automatically carries membership to Davy’s Sporting Club! This includes a Loyalty Card offering deals and discounts on food and drink in the upstairs bar, and also full access to the football pitches, squash courts and other facilities the club has to offer! With a huge car park as an added benefit, I found it so much easier than trying to find a city centre parking space!

WARNE PROUD AFTER NORWICH WIN LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
After a hard-fought but deserved victory over Norwich City, Interim Manager Paul Warne gave his thoughts on the 2-1 triumph. “The lads are happy in the changing rooms,” he said. “We’ve gone on all week about how we’re going to play and how we’re going to upset them. “It feels like everything we did was right. On another day they might have got the equaliser but, potentially, we could have got one or two more in the second half. The lads kept going against a quality side like that. I’m a very proud man.” Warne reserved particular praise for young striker Jerry Yates – scorer of the opening goal in a man-of-the-match display. “I don’t know how much more he can give,” beamed Warne. “He gives everything he’s got. I think the fashion from footballers these days is that you don’t have to run round. “The fact that he went out there and ran around the way he did. He gets a bit of luck, he scores a goal. I thought he was outstanding. He’s not playing against idiots, he’s playing against really good, class centre-halves. “We had a meeting before the game and told him we all trust him. There was no pressure. “I thought he was outstanding and I was really proud of him.” The Millers led at the break following Yates’ seventh-minute opener before Norwich’s Nelson Oliveira saw red for an incident with Kirk Broadfoot. “If I’m honest I was devastated he got sent

off,” admitted Warne. “I thought when he came off they’d all be giving that extra ten percent energy and aggression. “That’s not what I wanted. I thought it would be harder against ten men than eleven. I wasn’t banging the drum saying ‘get him off’.” Norwich were only level for four minutes in the second half. Tom Adeyemi’s 55th-minute header restored the Millers’ lead after Cameron Jerome had pegged the hosts back. “It’s only one game,” Warne added. “Winning football matches is a beautiful feeling. Even the Burton game a couple of weeks ago I think we deserved to win that and that would have given us a bit of momentum. “I just think we’re in a little bit of a transition stage at the Club. Everyone’s working really, really hard to try and improve this squad. “I think when you get a win, people and fans might believe in what we’re doing a little bit more. Winning today might get us a little bit more respect. “It’s great for the lads. They’re coming in every day and they’re not moaners. “I want good, hardworking people who want the best for everyone.” Warne confirmed forward Danny Ward missed
Rotherham United interim manager Paul Warne has confirmed that striker Peter Odemwingie will leave the club at the end of his contract. The Nigerian international signed a shortterm deal with the Millers until the end of this month, but missed out on today’s victory over Norwich City with a calf problem. Warne confirmed in his post match press that he had a conversation with the 35-year-old this week, and the former West Brom striker is now expected to look for a move to guarantee him regular first-team football.
Conor Grant feels he has unfinished business with Doncaster Rovers. Grant re-signed for his second loan spell with the club at the start of January and has slotted straight into the side. He has played every minute of both league games since returning, and the 21-year-old says it is good to be part of a winning team. “The position the lads have put themselves in is an excellent one and it’s something that we need to keep building on. Game by game we need to keep picking up the points,” said Grant. “We want to get promoted and for me personally, I just want to play as many games as I can and help the team push on. “We had a bad run when I was here last season so now on the flip side the team are winning games and the confidence is high.” The Everton loanee believes he has the trust of manager Darren Ferguson, and pointed out that as one of the main reasons for him coming back to the Keepmoat Stadium. “The manager was really pushing to get me so
Premier Division Swallownest FC maintained their 10 point lead at the top of the Premier Division with a comprehensive 8-1 home win over Jubilee Sports. The win is Swallownest’s fifth straight, all the way back to mid-November. Second placed Frecheville bounced back straight away from last weeks’ loss to Swallownest, with a 4-1 home win over Denaby United. Goals from Owen Fieldsend and Jake Ford gave Swinton Athletic a 2-1 win over Athersley Recreation Reserves at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Swinton are just a point behind Frecheville in third. There was a big game at the bottom, with bottom side Denaby Main hosting third bottom Millmoor Juniors. Goals from Jamie Jackson and Reece Taylor settled the game 2-1 in Millmoor’s favour. A brace from Danny Burkinshaw inspired Houghton Main to a 3-2 away win over North Gawber Colliery. The win ends a run of three winless games for Houghton Main. Division One The situation remains complicated in Division One, with only seven points separating the top 10. Wickersley FC climbed back top after a 6-1 away win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Oughtibridge were equally convincing, as they beat Davy FC 5-0 at home. Oughtibridge are level on points with Wickersley, but have a worse goal difference. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 are just a point further back, after a 3-1 home win over last weeks’ league leaders Sheffield Bankers. The Bankers drop a further point behind in fourth. Bottom side Millmoor Juniors Reserves claimed their first point of the season, as they drew with a fifth placed South Kirkby Colliery at Grange Park. Caribbean Sports registered their fifth straight win, with a 4-0 win against Brinsworth Whitehill at Pheonix Sports Club. Caribbean have conceded just three goals in that spell. Silkstone United extended their unbeaten run to five games, with a 3-1 home win over AFC Dronfield. Silkstone have won their last four games. High Green Villa won 4-2 for the second time in a week, as they saw off Grimethorpe Sports at the Thorncliffe FA Hub.
ODEMWINGIE TO DEPART MILLERS
COPPINGER GRANT HAILS FANS ENJOYING RETURN James Coppinger paid tribute to Rovers’ fans after the victory over Barnet. The 3-1 success at The Hive – where Coppinger netted either side of John Marquis’ strike – was witnessed by 826 travelling fans. The Rovers captain said: “They were superb, and they have been all season – home and away. “It is important to give the fans something to shout about after being relegated, and everyone has done that this season. Our home form has been unbeaten all season, and away from home we have given the fans something to shout about.” Rovers had to come from behind to claim the three points, and Coppinger praised the character of his team-mates to quickly bounce back. He added: “This team doesn’t know when it’s beat, and credit to the lads with the way they go about things on and off the pitch. “It’s momentum. When you are top of the league and playing with confidence, and a lot of quality, nobody loses their heads if we go 1-0 down. To get back in the game so early helped, and we grew in confidence from there.”
today’s game due to a back injury, whilst fellow front-man Dexter Blackstock was struggling with a hamstring strain. “He had a back injury today,” said Warne of Ward. “He sent in a video message beforehand - which I showed the lads in a team meeting – wishing us all the best. “He (Dexter) had a tight hamstring. When he came off last week he said his hamstring was tight. “He’ll be back in training Thursday.”
A fresh wintry Saturday afternoon saw 20 fixtures take place in the County Senior League across the league’s four divisions.
Division Two North With the top three not in action FC Graceholme had a chance to close some ground in the promotion race. They did just that, as they beat Bawtry Town 8-1 at Yorkshire Main Miners Welfare. Dan White starred, scoring four times. Goals from Brad Day (2), Liam Holland, Haydn Musgrave and Leigh Copping gave Euroglaze FC a 5-0 away win against Houghton Main Reserves. South Kirkby Colliery Reserves drew 2-2 with Working Wonders at the South Kirkby Colliery Miners Welfare Ground.
it shows how much confidence he has in me. I loved working with him last time and now it’s even better,” added Grant. “The manager really seems to get the best out of me. He understands me as a person and as a player. “It just feels great to be back really, for me it’s normal service resumed and I’m enjoying my football again.”

WILDER’S WALSALL VERDICT 2016/17 Blades boss Chris Wilder admitted a poor second-half showing was ultimately the decisive factor in a disappointing loss at Walsall on Saturday. After Jack O’Connell had cancelled our Amadou Bakoyoko’s opener, three goals without reply after the break saw the Saddlers run out comfortable winners. And Wilder didn’t offer any excuses following a first loss in seven
league matches, he remarked: “We didn’t see that second-half performance coming and it simply wasn’t good enough. “We conceded some terrible goals and didn’t deserve to win the game of football, we defended very poorly as a team and if you defend how we did then you open yourself up for the opposition to take full advantage and Walsall did. “I thought we were
dominant in the firsthalf and was bitterly disappointed not be in front at the break. “Walsall were dangerous again on the counter attack as they were at Bramall Lane and obviously they caught us early on after Billy hit the bar.” The Gaffer continued: “But we responded and having equalised, missed two or three good chances to get our noses in front and 1-1 didn’t really reflect the
game in my opinion. “The second goal is very poor defending on the counter attack and it shouldn’t go in and the same applies to the third, so that’s something for us to address in house. “It is by far and away the worst we’ve defended and when we don’t defend properly both individually and collectively we’ll get punished and lose games.”

EFL FAMILY AWARDS RECOGNISE JUNIOR SEASON TICKET SALES
More and more young people are making their way through the turnstiles in the EFL as clubs continue to find increasingly innovative ways to attract new fans and their families. New figures show that junior season ticket sales have increased by 37% over the past 10 years with 20% of all EFL club match attendees now under 16 years old. Such an increase is testament to the efforts and evolving attitudes of clubs to attract new
fans to their grounds with improved matchday experiences for all ages. These efforts are once again set to be recognised by the EFL’s Family Excellence Awards - an initiative rewarding clubs that deliver an outstanding experience for families. Celebrating its 10th Anniversary this season, the Awards ensure each club receives two ‘mystery’ visits from families each season, who describe and score their experiences across
six areas including first impressions; stadium vicinity; refreshments and everything that happens inside the stadium, as well as indicating overall ratings on friendliness and intention to recommend. Reports are collated, assessed and winning clubs revealed at the end of the season, with best practice then highlighted and shared across the leagues. The feedback is then used by clubs to improve the family experience they can offer.
Having stood on the terraces at Bramall Lane as a young Sheffield United fan, former Preston and Bolton striker Kevin Davies is a keen supporter of the Family Excellence Awards initiative: “It’s incredibly important that our clubs continue to attract and retain families and younger supporters in the modern era. We want our clubs to be family friendly, to be welcoming, exciting and entertaining places to go, so that ultimately
LAFFERTY SIGNS PERMANENT DEAL WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Chris Wilder has secured the services of Daniel Lafferty after successful negotiations with Burnley. The left back’s loan deal has been turned into a permanent two-and-a-half year deal at the Lane. Lafferty’s consistency in a Blades shirt is a reason why the Blades have been so secure defensively. The 27-year-old won’t take many ‘Man of the Match’ awards, but he clearly fits the defensive system, in which he is often used as a left wing back. On the signing, Wilder told the club’s website: “Dan has been brilliant for us and he is another who
has played a big part in helping us get to where we are now.” Wilder appears to breaking the recent trend at Sheffield United, in which managers do their business towards the end of the window, often missing out on targets. Far too often in previous years Blades fans have been glued to Twitter or Sky Sport’s Deadline Day coverage in the final hours of the window, hoping for news on potential incomings at United. It is unlikely that we will see a repeat of such drama again as January comes to a close this year. In other transfer news, James Wallace’s
stay at the Blades finally came to end this week after his contract at the club was cancelled. The midfielder’s time at the club was plagued with injury and the 25-year-old only played 20 times in red and white. Wallace did show
promise during his performances but injury stopped him gaining any momentum. Wallace will try to rebuild his career in the National League, he has signed a 18-month deal with former-club Tranmere Rovers.
attendances continue to increase across the leagues.” The early indications this season are that clubs are increasingly turning to new technology to help recognise and welcome first time family attendees. The use of big screens (for dancing and waving games), gaming consoles, and other technology, is also helping to provide interaction between clubs and young fans. Across the vast majority of clubs the family experience in 2016 is almost unrecognisable to that which was on offer in 2007 with the majority of EFL clubs now offering specific family fun zones, access to games consoles, children’s entertainers, xxx concourse entertainment, innovative locally sourced refreshments, first time family/fan guides, family helpers, along with ‘magic moments’ with club mascots, players and
aid and Safeguarding certificates, together with a satisfactory DBS check, are also are also essential. Ideally you will also be an experienced coach with a FA UEFA B Coaching Award. To apply please send your CV to Catherine Frost, Head of HR at Sheffield United at hr@ sufc.co.uk The closing date for applications is Saturday 21st January 2017. enthusiastic familyfriendly staff. Kevin Davies added: “As a Sheffield United supporter as a young boy went to the matches with my dad and then with my friends. It’s a totally different experience for younger fans visiting the club now with... There are different reasons why fans go to watch games but for families, clubs must ensure that they capture their imagination, make it easy for them to attend, and feel part of the club. “This is where the Family Excellence Awards shines, as it helps clubs to use real feedback from families to improve the experience they offer. There’s no doubt that some of the great ideas implemented at Bramall Lane today have come about because there is demand from families to be looked after and entertained. The club realise that they can’t control the 90 minutes so it’s about being the best you can off the pitch.”

COLLECTIVELY FANTASTIC Reflecting on the Owls’ victory over play-off rivals Huddersfield on Saturday, Carlos Carvalhal says as a collective, Wednesday were deserving of the three points. With praise for his players and supporters, the head coach was delighted with the outcome of the Terriers clash which saw the Owls move five points clear in the top six. He said: “I’m a collective
person, I don’t put responsibilities when we lose a game on one player, I don’t want to put responsibilities on one player because we win a game. “All of the players tried their best, they were fantastic especially in the second half and they should be happy, all of them. “I’m very happy with the fans, they gave good participation in the game, they affected the game also. “Even in the first
half when we didn’t perform so well, we felt all the time they were with us. This is very, very important to achieve the victory. “We were more like Sheffield Wednesday in the second half than in the first but this is football.” Wednesday are now in preparation for one of their biggest challenges of the campaign - a trip to automatic promotion favourites Brighton on Friday. On the clash – that will
be staged in front of the Sky Sports cameras – he added: “I must now focus my players for Brighton on Friday, this is our most important game of the season because it is the next one. “We want to continue our run and see what we can do. We will focus on going there and winning the points and after, let’s see. “We are improving, we can do better, we will get better and this is what I know.”
PERMISSION TO FLY Carlos Carvalhal gave high praise to Ross Wallace following the Scot’s maiden strike of the season to set Wednesday en route victory against Huddersfield. Wallace unleashed a bullet shot from 25 yards that flew into the top corner and a late strike from Fernando Forestieri sealed the points. Carvalhal said: “That was a typical Ross
Wallace goal, it was the brand of Ross Wallace. “He scored a very similar goal against Fulham last season and this is what he is capable of. “I am very pleased for him because sometimes this season he has been asked to do specific duties for the team, sometimes that are more defensive to block the corridors. “So maybe it looks like he hasn’t played so well
sometimes but that has not been the case, this is because we have asked him to play a different role.
“Today, he played a more advanced role, he was given permission to fly and he went through the flight very well.”
