RARE RAIL MEMORABILIA STEAMS INTO DONCASTER’S FRENCHGATE SHOPPING CENTRE Rail enthusiasts and visitors up and down the country are being invited to Frenchgate Shopping Centre, Doncaster to see a haul of rare rail artefacts that have remained hidden for years. The artefacts will be displayed from the 6th February to 7th March as part of the Making Tracks – Past, Present and Future exhibition. It will showcase the borough’s rail heritage, the present day rail sector and the future of rail in Doncaster.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Frenchgate Shopping Centre, Doncaster Council, Business Doncaster, and Doncaster Museums and Art Gallery. It will feature historic exhibits including locomotive name plates and pictures of the Silverlink train signed by Sir Nigel Gresley - the railway engineer responsible for the world-famous Doncaster-built Mallard and Flying Scotsman steam locomotives. The famous Doncaster
Grammar School collection will also be on display. This collection started in the 1930s when pupils and teachers at the school (now Hall Cross Academy) set up a railway society. Over the years, members collected signs, nameplates, lamps, signal posts and thousands of other items of railwayana, building up an archive of items from the golden age of steam. Dave Rogerson, trustee of the collection, who
is helping to put on the exhibition at Frenchgate, said the exhibition was of ‘national importance’. “It is an amazing collection, but has been hidden away for too long. It’s well-known among railway circles, but it is time it was brought to a much wider audience. We are hoping many people will come out to see the items at Frenchgate - only a few people have had a glimpse, so hopefully this will make people aware of what is within the archive.”
The exhibition will also coincide with half-term activities and attractions at Frenchgate, including train-related workshops for youngsters on Wednesday February 22 and Thursday 23, plus a meet and greet opportunity with Thomas the Tank Engine and the Fat Controller on Friday February 24. The exhibition will go on display at Frenchgate in two units on the ground floor of the West Mall, from February 6 to until March 7.

PROTECTED PLAYING FIELDS RECOGNISED Ochre Dike Playing Fields, one of more than 800 green open spaces in Sheffield, was officially recognised as a Fields in Trust protected site at a ceremony last week. Located near Crystal Peaks shopping complex, Sheffield College and housing, the playing fields are an important green space to those who live, work and study in the area. Along with local councillors, residents fought to protect the site to make sure it stays that way. Fields in Trust protects open spaces all across the UK from being developed – from sports pitches to children’s playgrounds,
bicycle trails to country parks. The playing field on Ochre Dike Lane, Waterthorpe, was formally designated in 2015 after members of the local community worked with Sheffield City Council to secure the status. Since then they have been waiting to receive the official plaque of designation. Last week that plaque was unveiled at the official designation ceremony. The Trust’s Jamie Leeson was there to reveal the plaque with Councillor Mary Lea and David Cooper, Head of Policy and Projects at Sheffield Parks and Countryside.
They were joined by local councillors and residents who planted a tree as part of the ceremony and a new sign was installed on site. Jamie Leeson, Development manager at Fields in Trust, said: “Sheffield City Council are demonstrating the value of their precious public green spaces such as Ochre Dike Playing Fields by protecting them forever with Fields in Trust. “At a time when there is pressure on land for housing and commercial development we applaud the decision to safeguard recreational space for future generations and provide
/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER
opportunities for families and the wider community of Sheffield to enjoy time outdoors. Access to parks and playgrounds contributes to physical health, mental wellbeing and community cohesion resulting in more active and longer, healthier lives.” This comes after, six weeks ago, Sheffield City Council won a national award for Partner of the Year, for its work with Fields In Trust on protecting green spaces in the city. The Partner of the Year Award recognises those organisations who have gone the extra mile over the last year to advocate the work of
national charity Fields in Trust and to further its mission of ensuring everyone – young or old, able-bodied or disabled and wherever they live – should have access to free, local outdoor space for sport, play and recreation. Ochre Dike is one of Sheffield’s three Fields in Trust sites, which also includes Weston Park, the city’s only Centenary Field (Centenary Field status recognises all those who lost their lives in the First World War) and Woodhouse Mill recreation ground, which was dedicated as a Queen Elizabeth II Field as part of the 2012 Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

FOUR SHEFFIELD SECOND WORLD WAR VETERANS TO RECEIVE LEGION OF HONOUR Four British Second World War veterans from Sheffield will be presented with the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest military distinction, in a ceremony on Thursday. The four veterans, all in their early 90s, will be presented with the awards during a ceremony hosted by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Denise Fox, on Thursday at 2pm. The four veterans include Roy Stout, who served in the Royal Air Force before enjoying a 40-year career working for Sheffield City Council in its estates department. Mr Stout said: “I served as a radar mechanic and was on the Franco-German border three weeks after D-Day. I’m a member of the Blind Veterans UK group and they suggested I might be eligible for the Legion of Honour but it’s impossible to believe really. We’re the last line standing. “I’m hoping some of my colleagues at Sheffield City Council may be joining me on Thursday – they call us the old lags.” The other veterans being presented with the award are Graham Bell, Donald Walker and George Young, who all still live in Sheffield. The Lord Mayor or Sheffield said: “These four men are totally deserving of this honour, for their service during the war, and for their ongoing commitment to the city of Sheffield.
“This ceremony is an important part of our ongoing celebrations to commemorate the soldiers who fought for our city, and for peace, across the world during those two terrible conflicts in the last century. “It also shows our ongoing commitment to supporting our current armed forces stationed here and overseas.” The medals will be presented by Monsieur JeanClaude Lafontaine, Consul Honoraire de France, and The Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire will also be present. The medal ceremony follows a number of others that have taken place around the UK since the 70th anniversary of D-Day in June 2014, when French President François Hollande pledged to honour all British veterans who had served in France during the war. France has so far decorated more than 4,300 D-Day veterans across the UK. The National Order of the Legion of Honour (Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur) is the highest French order for military and civil merits, established in 1802 by Napoléon Bonaparte. Veterans across the UK are being honoured for their role in securing France’s liberation during the Second World War, with many having taken part in the June 1944 D-Day landings.

This morning I used Red Bull instead of water to make my coffee. After 15 minutes of driving I realised that I’d left my car at home! I asked my wife to act like a “naughty school girl”. She forged a note from her mother saying she didn’t have to participate. A bunch of scumbags stole 20 crates of Red Bull from my local supermarket yesterday. I don’t know how they sleep at night. Me to mate, “My wife keeps pestering me to dress up as an Alice in Wonderland character!” Mate “Are you mad at her?” “Don’t you start!” Just tried changing my password to “14Days” but it was two week. Just managed to burn 1500 calories in 30 minutes! The pizza’s ruined though.

GROSVENOR DEMOLITION BRINGS BACK MEMORIES FOR COUNCIL LEADER
Citizens Advice Sheffield helped one in every 20 adults in Sheffield during 2016. A total of 21,500 people asked for their help with 65,000 issues during the year. “How We Help People, a report published today, describes how we have helped thousands of people in the city with the problems they face” said Andy Buck, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Sheffield. “42 per cent of the people we helped were ill or disabled. Three quarters were working age adults. Most live in the poorer parts of the city. All of them were grappling with problems that for many seemed intractable. “At least one in every five people we helped had difficulty affording fuel, food or housing. 42 per cent of the issues about which people asked for help were to do with welfare benefits, and 30 per cent were about debts. “Three in four of the people we helped said we made a positive difference to their lives. With our help, people secured at least £6.8 million in welfare benefits, and resolved debts of at least £4.3 million.” The report will be launched at a meeting today addressed by Gillian Guy, Citizens Advice’s national chief executive, and Councillor Jack Scott, Sheffield City Council’s cabinet member for community services and libraries. “Citizens Advice plays such an important role in helping many of our most disadvantaged and vulnerable people and their families” said Cllr Scott. “I welcome the publication of this report today which shows how Citizens Advice Sheffield is going from strength to strength.” Sheffield City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Citizens Advice Sheffield for the next three years.”
The leader of Sheffield City Council, Councillor Julie Dore was on the site of the former Grosvenor House Hotel, where she held her wedding reception 30 years ago, on Tuesday 17 January at 2pm as demolition works continue to make way for the new Sheffield Retail Quarter. The council leader also held her 40th birthday there, where she saw the Bootleg Beatles. Contractors from DSM Demolition Limited are demolishing the remainder of the 10-storey hotel block with a 180-tonne high reach (70metre) machine with a concrete pulveriser attachment. The 1960s-built former five-star hotel, and associated buildings, are being demolished to make way for the first phase of Sheffield’s new retail quarter, with building work set to commence in Spring this year. DSM Demolition Limited has been carrying out a full demolition on the site, a process that has included asbestos removal and soft stripping of the remaining internal aspects of the building shop fronts and debris. The Pinstone Street and Furnival Gate elevations were deconstructed by hand with the remainder of the building demolished mechanically. Julie Dore got married and held her reception at the Grosvenor Hotel in 1986. Julie Dore got married and held her reception at the Grosvenor Hotel in 1986. Banking giant HSBC has been confirmed as the first anchor tenant in a premium office block set for completion in 2019, subject to planning permission. Councillor Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Standing on the site of what will become the Sheffield Retail Quarter is really something to behold. The demolition teams have

worked tirelessly over Christmas to keep the project on schedule and make this dramatic change to the city’s skyline. “The Grosvenor once was the place to be, in fact, my wedding reception was held there 30 years ago, and it holds a lot of memories for people across the city. However, our environment and the city is rapidly changing and therefore I hope people also can look forward to the transformation of this key part of the city to make way for a development that Sheffield people want and need, which can transform the city’s retail and commercial offer for generations to come.”

As we say goodbye to January and the festive period turns into a distant memory many people will be looking ahead to the Spring and Summer which is traditionally the busiest period for Weddings. Also as we enter February we’re only a couple of weeks away from Valentine’s Day, which as you can read in the facts below is still one of the most popular days for people to pop the question.
Wedding WeddingGuide
Over the next couple of pages you’ll find services and special offers from venues and suppliers in the region that will help you take away some of the stress and strain from planning your big day.
2017 Wedding Facts
Budgets – 30% of the budget will be on the reception. The couple usually spends £4,000 on the venue, catering, décor etc. The honeymoon fund occupies 25% of the budget, followed by outfits, generally costing £1,400 in total for the groom’s suit hire and the bride’s dress. Total Cost – In total, the average spend is £35,000 on a wedding in the UK. The wedding industry is worth over £10bn as a result!
Average Age – Quite surprisingly, the average age for a person to get married is 33 for the groom and 31 for the bride.
Proposals – Valentine’s Day is one of the most common dates according to UKbride’s 550,000 members. Christmas Eve is the most common day to get down on one knee. 24% of proposals take place on Christmas Eve, followed by New Year’s Eve.

Engagement – 33% of engagements last for two years. Only 6% of couples give themselves six months to plan the day. Date – There isn’t much variation in the popularity of wedding dates. Unsurprisingly, 54% of weddings happen on a Saturday, and 20% occur on a Friday. Venues – Despite 64% of weddings being civil ceremonies and only 36% being religious ceremonies, the church is still the favourite location. 15% opt for a hotel, 13% in the registry office and 12% marry in a marquee.

NOT BORN YESTERDAY! OAPS BACK CAMPAIGN A WAR veteran who was almost scammed out of his entire life savings has added his support to a Sheffield City Council-led campaign to crack down on rogue traders and scammers. Called “Not Born Yesterday”, the campaign highlights the collaboration between Sheffield’s Trading Standards and Adult Safeguarding services and brings together a network of partners including South Yorkshire Police, Age UK Sheffield and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. Albert had been targeted over the phone for a plethora of drugs by callers telling him they would cure his arthritis. Thinking they would work and believing in the best of people, he paid huge sums for jiffy bags full of worthless drugs and vitamins. Sarah Poulson, from Sheffield City Council, said: “After visiting Albert and assessing how we could help, he agreed to trial one of our devices that screen and block nuisance calls. Like so many others, he was targeted by people who told him they could cure his arthritis, or his back pain. Sadly the packages that arrived from China and India are completely worthless and did no such thing. It’s only through his carers’ vigilance that action could be taken to stop this from happening further.”
The “Not Born Yesterday” campaign is delivered through organisations and community groups, using the help of family, friends and neighbours who are best placed to spot the signs of this type of financial abuse and provide an effective and confidential route to refer concerns. Spotting the warning signs and providing support to victims is a key aim of the project. Those being helped might be someone receiving lots of junk letters for mail order products and prize draws, being pestered by scam calls, or being targeted at the door for unnecessary property repairs or gardening work. Councillor Bryan Lodge, Cabinet Member for the Environment at Sheffield City Council, said: “We know that some of the most vulnerable people in Sheffield sadly won’t have face-to-face contact with many people on a daily basis, which is why it’s important that we use those living and working in our communities to look out for these people and be aware of the signs of scams and rogue trading. It is a sad fact that criminals prey on the most vulnerable. But once we are made aware of people being a victim of rogue traders or scams, we can use all the powers at our disposal to stop it happening again – and to bring these criminals to justice. Simple

tools such as call blockers are changing people’s lives but, if we’re not aware of the problem, we can’t act. The message is to friends, families and neighbours – you can help us to help your loved ones.” Sheffield Trading Standards has identified more than 600 residents in Sheffield who are known to be targeted by scam mail. National statistics suggest that at least half of scam victims lose more than £50, while five per cent lose more than £5,000. A third of adults responding to post or phone scams will then be repeatedly targeted with requests for money or sensitive personal details. Last year, officers intervened in more than 30 serious incidents of doorstep crime involving elderly or vulnerable residents. The team investigated a similar number of allegations of rogue trading where people suffered “serious” financial loss. The Not Born Yesterday network provides strong links between partners and improves the opportunities to safeguard individuals and pursue those involved in this type of criminality. Anyone who has concerns that someone they know may be a victim of scammers or rogue traders should call 03454 040506 or email trading.standards@ sheffield.gov.uk

BELIEVE WITH THE BOTANIST FOR BARNARDO’S The Botanist has exceeded the target it set as part of a company-wide campaign to support the children’s charity Barnardo’s. Initially set at £35k at the end of last year, in just two months the Company has hit a figure of £43,594. Across The Botanist’s 11 UK sites, over 1500 hours of team time was pledged towards Barnardo’s projects and initiatives to celebrate the milestone anniversary of the incredible organisation; with hours being spent in numerous ways including exhilarating activities such as the National Three Peaks Challenge and skydiving. Barnardo’s will be using the money raised to make a difference to some of the UK’s most disadvantaged and
vulnerable children. Other community focused projects conducted by The Botanist include chefs inviting families to site to learn about healthy eating and cooking as a family over a six-week course. This initially started in Newcastle and since receiving such amazing feedback, will be rolled out across other UK sites this year. The campaign has seen many events for young carers pop up around the UK’s Botanist sites, organised with a view to providing much needed respite, delivering hours of fun and games for children. Chris Hill, CEO for The Botanist parent company, New World Trading Company said: “We are very proud of our first national
charity campaign, the total amount raised is phenomenal.” Jane Harries, Regional Fundraising Manager for Barnardo’s said: “We’ve been blown away by the enthusiasm and generosity of the teams at The Botanist. They have also put on amazing events for our young
people, some of whom will never forget the special opportunities they were given.” Over 30 staff members have also signed up to Barnardo’s mentoring schemes, predominantly supporting care leavers, as these young adults are often forced to become independent much younger than other children and as they move out of care, it’s vital that they get the best possible start to adult life.
VOTE FOR SHEFFIELD THEATRES IN PRESTIGIOUS WHATSONSTAGE AWARDS Sheffield Theatres are inviting the public to help Sheffield stay top of the league when it comes to musicals, by voting in this year’s prestigious WhatsOnStage Awards for their hugely popular productions of Show Boat and Flowers For Mrs Harris. Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s five-star musical Show Boat, seen by nearly 40,000 people at the Crucible, before transferring to the West End, is nominated for three accolades; Best Musical Revival, Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for Rebecca Trehearn’s portrayal of tragic singer, Julie La Verne and Best Set Design for designer Lez Brotherston. Continuing the Theatres’ reputation as a leading producer of classics and vibrant new musicals, the recent heart-warming world
première, Flowers For Mrs Harris, is nominated for Best Regional Production, an award previously won by Sheffield Theatres for My Fair Lady and Oliver! The WhatsOnStage Awards offer the public the opportunity to share their love of theatre and celebrate the excellence of British Theatre. To vote for Sheffield Theatres visit awards.whatsonstage.com Voting closes on Tuesday 31 January. The winners of the 17th Annual WhatsOnStage Awards will be announced at the Awards Concert on Sunday 19 February at the West End’s Prince of Wales Theatre.

BRAKE WELCOMES POLICE CRACKDOWN ON DRIVERS USING MOBILES
POOR CREDIT HISTORY?
Almost 8,000 drivers were caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel A police campaign to catch drivers who break the law by using mobiles behind the wheel has been welcomed by road safety charity, Brake. The clampdown comes ahead of plans, announced last year, by the Department of Transport, to double the punishment for using a mobile phone while driving. The charity says the use of mobiles is a growing menace, especially as devices become more sophisticated. A recent survey by Brake and Direct Line revealed around half of drivers aged between 25 and 34 are taking huge risks by texting, using apps or going online on their mobiles when they are behind the wheel. More than half (55%) of 2534 year old drivers questioned admitted they had sent or read a text message on their mobile, while behind the wheel of their car, in the last year. Despite it being illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone at all while driving, more than four in 10 (42%) revealed they send or read messages at least once a week. One in five young drivers (1824) confirmed they regularly text and/or instant message when they are behind the wheel. Just under half of drivers (49%) aged 25-34 admitted they sometimes go online or use apps (other than sat nav apps) while driving. Almost a third of drivers in that age group said they do that several times a week at least. Driving is a highly unpredictable and risky activity, so it requires full concentration at all times. Drivers who divide their

attention between their phone and the road are significantly increasing their risk of causing a devastating crash. Reading and writing messages – whether texting, emailing or using apps or social networks – while driving is even more distracting than talking on a phone, as it takes your mind, hands and eyes off the road. Texting drivers’ reaction times are 35% slower and they also have poor lane control. One large-scale study found texting drivers were 23 times more likely to crash than a driver paying full attention. Reaching for a mobile phone can be an irresistible temptation for some, despite knowledge of the risks. In the UK, experts have warned of increasing levels of smartphone addiction by users who are unable to go without checking their phone for short periods or through the night. A study of in-vehicle video footage estimated that 22% of crashes could be caused, at least in part, by driver distraction. It also showed that drivers who perform a secondary task at the wheel are two to three times more likely to crash. Many drivers allow
The Minister commented: “We have some of the safest roads in the world and MOT tests play an important role in ensuring the standard of vehicles on our roads. New vehicles are much safer than they were 50 years ago and so it is only right we bring the MOT test up to date to help save motorists money where we can.” A consultation period on the MOT extension is open for TyreSafe has again voiced concern at the impact on road comments until 16th April at 11.45pm. safety of the government’s proposals to extend the MOT “Extending the time until the first MOT test has been test ‘grace period’ of new proposed several times in vehicles to four years. recent years and each time Current legislation requires all it has been rejected because new cars and motorcycles to of the negative impact on undergo the first test at three road safety,” said TyreSafe years old. The comment is in response to Chairman Stuart Jackson. “While, of course, vehicles the unveiling of the proposals are certainly safer and more on Sunday 22nd January 2017 reliable than they were 50 by Transport Minister Andrew years ago, ‘maintenance Jones, billed as a ‘boost for components’, such as tyres, motorists’ as part of the plans to save them £100m a year. still need the owner to regularly
themselves to be distracted because they believe they are in control, and do not believe distraction poses a significant risk. However, research shows drivers are not able to correctly estimate how distracted they are and 98% are not able to divide their attention without a significant deterioration in driving performance. Gary Rae, campaigns director for Brake, said: “We welcome this crackdown by police forces. The law needs to be much tougher with this type of offence, which appears to be growing in numbers. Younger drivers, especially those aged between 25 and 34, simply aren’t getting the message about the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving. Doing any other complex task while driving hugely increases your chance of crashing. These drivers are putting their own and other people’s lives in grave danger by taking this risk. If a phone has to be used as a sat nav, it must be programmed before setting off on the journey and properly secured. There is no other acceptable way to use a phone while driving.”

check and service their vehicle, which is not universally the case by any means. “In fact, evidence, including that drawn from TyreSafe’s tread depth survey in partnership with Highways England, shows millions of Britain’s motorists do not check or maintain tyres, and only replace them when required to do so in order to pass the MOT. Even then, one-in-20 vehicles fails its first MOT due to tyre defects* making it likely that any extension of time until the first MOT test will result in more defective and dangerous tyres and vehicles on our roads. “Extending the first MOT to four years will not be a boost to motorists if it is at the expense of their safety. “As such, TyreSafe is urging road safety organisations to send in their comments on the proposal,” concluded Jackson.

ANGLER’S CORNER
further up the bank, who had informed me that his intention was to fish for bream, or carp, and had a vast array of bait with him, with Clint Walker which was carefully atomised to provide a It rained this week. A lot… After three perfect consistency; I was impressed. His incessant days of rain, interspersed with a preparation was exacting too, each area of the few patches of drizzle, the weather cleared swim carefully plumbed, and a good number up a little, so I set off to find somewhere to of top kits adorned his roost, each readied to fish… fish in turn. A feeder rod was also awaiting I like Basford Coarse Fishery near deployment, and this chap seemed as though Cheddleton, Staffordshire; I don’t fish it he was fully intending to empty the place, half as much as I should do, but I know leaving me the scraps…or was he? that despite the weather, there is always I knew from previous visits, that the large somewhere to sit as it drains well, leaving the expanse of open water in front of the island banks firm and clean. My last visit had been was the place to find the bream, and they to take pictures and vide for Angler’s Mail, would be unlikely to be tucked away at the to feature in the ‘Where to Fish’ section, and back of the feature where he was currently during that appraisal, I’d witnessed some sitting. In fairness, he had seen fish which smashing bream being caught, and fancied appeared to be carp, so was justified in taking a crack at them myself! I don’t complicate his position, but on a day which was overcast things when fishing for bream, and my and cool, I hoped the fish would be where tactics couldn’t have been simpler; a mix of I was, in open water… After another hour, white crumb and crushed pellet was quickly during which I witnessed the other chap knocked up, and I added some Mainline Baits land a hefty bream and a couple of smaller Essential Cell glug to the lake water before I fish, I was starting to think I’d got it wrong, mixed it. I like the sweet Mainline additive, but then I started to get a few line bites, a and reckon it gives a real boost when the steady pull of the tip before it sprang back, water is cold, and a teaspoon or so is enough to indicate that fish were present. Minutes in a couple of kilos of crumb. I hoped the later, a positive take saw the first bream, a bream thought so too. fish of around 4lb, safely netted. From then I had intended to fish a small piece of punched on, steady action followed, with a fish every bread, popped up on a hair rig, with a cage fifteen minutes, and I eventually totted up feeder of groundbait, but after a fruitless hour about twenty fish, averaging 4lb, for a good total net on a cold day. of only the shyest of indications, switched to a small method feeder, and alternated between After I had packed up, I asked the other angler what he had caught, and was surprised corn, and banded dead maggots on the hook. to find that he only landed half a dozen fish. As I fished, I watched another angler fishing
I was genuinely surprised too, because this lad obviously knew what he was doing, but it appeared he had just picked the wrong spot… much like I was to do later in the week, but that’s fishing. I was lucky, he was perhaps unlucky; next time, I’m sure he’ll batter me off the next peg… I wanted a January carp. My chum Andy had had a session on our club water, taking an astonishing fourteen double figure fish during a day session, and after pumping him for information, I settled on a spot I know well, where I was confident that I would catch. Unbeknown to me however, Andy was also on site, tucked away on the opposite side, so our friendly Facebook banter commenced… Once again, simple tactics were employed, a helicopter rig, with a short nylon hook link, terminating in a size 10 Guru hook. On the hair, I split a Mainline Hybrid hookbait, and tipped it with a matching pop up to create a snowman rig, then gently swung it out onto a sparsely baited spot to wait. And wait. And wait…. Andy gleefully informed me that he hada lost a carp, and landed two others; meanwhile, I’d missed a twitchy run, and repositioned my bait. A short time later, I had a message; “… had anything yet?” which I just knew meant Andy had caught a third fish, and so it proved when he sent a smiley picture of him holding another carp over the cradle. Grrr! In the interim, I missed another run, and as the day progressed, the light was getting less, but I eventually hit a run which saw a single figure fish on the mat. It was a carp, and in January, but my satisfaction was rudely interrupted by another missive to let me know that my now ex-friend Andy had taken number four to the
scales! He also had the temerity to inform me that he lost two further fish, bringing his tally of runs to six, in comparison to my measly (at best) three. I packed up and went home, but pondered… During both sessions, location had proved to be the decisive factor to getting on fish. On one session, I had done well, but on the other, I was clearly in the wrong place, and it made all the difference, so the lesson was learned. Find them first, then fish for them, instead of getting comfortable and presumptuous. Later that night Andy revealed that he had been watching the fish for the preceding four days, during his daily walks, so knew where to head for, whereas I relied on blindly following a preconceived idea that I was going to fish a certain peg because I thought that conditions warranted it; bad move, and it didn’t work, but lesson learned. Next time, I’ll just follow Andy…

FIRST HALF MISS COSTLY - WARNE LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
Rotherham United interim boss Paul Warne says the psychological blow they were dealt in conceding just prior to half time proved crucial in their 4-0 defeat at St. James’ Park. The Millers battled well in the opening half in Newcastle and almost broke the deadlock and came close to stunning the home faithful when Anthony Forde pounced on Karl Darlow’s error, before Jerry Yates was denied by a spectacular recovery save from the home keeper. The hosts capitalised moments later with a clinical finish from Daryl Murphy which left the Millers trailing at the break and Warne ruing the missed chance. “He [Forde] stayed on his feet trying to score and Yatesy did well and then the ‘keeper has pulled off a worldie,” he said after the game. “It was a double whammy because they obviously went up the other end and scored and it was a massive swing in the game. “It was a psychological hit for the lads and you could see that. They didn’t start the second half as well and they scored again and the game was away from us. “Then he’s turned and put it in just before half time so my conversation was a lot different to what I wanted to have.” The restart saw Newcastle take a firm grip on the game when goals from Ritchie (2) and Perez ensured them of the points but the Millers’ interim boss did praise his team’s valiant first half performance and admits the goal just before the break was costly in their efforts to take something from the second tier

showdown. “You could see them getting frustrated and I thought we limited them to very few chances in the first half,” Warne continued. “We had the best chance of the game and we had attempts on goal and corners and I thought we were doing quite well. I’m not going to come here and play three up front, I’m not that naïve and I thought the way that we set up was
working a treat. “We were more than competitive in the first half and we went toe-to-toe with them. Unfortunately, which is unforgivable in my eyes, at the set piece we had more than enough time to get ourselves in a position. Shelvey was like a quarterback which we knew and he puts a good ball in behind and I think Fordey should have got in quicker.”
FIGHTING SPIRIT REMAINS JOE MATTOCK
Championship safety. They have a derby to look forward to this weekend against Barnsley, as Warne’s side look to re-enforce their improved form on home soil. “We’ve just got to focus on being positive and try and take the game to teams,” Mattock added. “There have been spells in games when we’ve been dominating teams so we’ve got to focus on those positives and take them into the next few games. “We’ve got to stay strong minded and take it game-by-game. I think we play better at home, it’s the way we are. We’ve got to think about picking up points.”
FULL-BACK Joe Mattock insists it is not in Rotherham’s DNA to throw in the towel, as they look to again close the gap on the sides above them in the Championship table. The Millers have shown improvement under interim manager Paul Warne, especially on home soil after recording victories over the likes of Wigan, QPR and Norwich at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Despite defeat at league leaders Newcastle last weekend, the Millers can take heart from their first-half showing with Mattock adamant his side will fight tooth and nail to preserve their Championship status. “There are still plenty of games to come. We can’t just think that the season is done and dusted. It’s not in our blood, it’s not in our DNA,” Mattock stated. “We cannot afford to think about the table. It will always be in the back of the players’ minds that teams are pulling away from us, but we’ve got to play our own game.” The Millers know they need try and turn some of their improved performances into results if they are to give themselves a shot of
DF POST-CREWE GRANT ENJOYS Darren Ferguson felt his side managed the game well as they beat Crewe Alexandra. Rovers initially took the lead through Everton loanee Conor Grant, before James Jones equalised for the visitors. Two second half goals from John Marquis and Tommy Rowe respectively, secured all three points for the league leaders, but Ferguson knew it would be a hard task to see of the Railwaymen. “It’s a game that I knew would be difficult,” he “We managed it well, it was very close in the first half but I think they shaded it, what we managed to do in the second half was keep believing and our quality shone through. “The belief in the camp is very strong, regardless of how the games go and I think the last three games have been an example of that.” Grant scored his first goal for the club on his second return to the Keepmoat Stadium, with a neat finish into the bottom left corner of Ben Garratt’s goal. And Ferguson believes the addition of the 21year-old will only benefit the side. “Getting that goal gave him a lot of confidence,” explained Ferguson. “We needed more assists and goals from that area and he will bring that with his quality, him coming back to the club has lifted us.”
STRIKE
Conor Grant enjoyed scoring the first goal of his loan spell at Doncaster Rovers. The 21-year-old is back for a second spell with Rovers after spending five months with Darren Ferguson’s men last season. Grant scored his first goal on his return to the club, against Crewe Alexandra in a 3-1 win at the Keepmoat Stadium, and the youngster is happy to be back. “I’m finding my feet here, I’m really enjoying it and I know I will bring goals to the team,” said Grant “I love it here, it’s a different feel from last year, we are winning games and that’s what you want to be doing. “There is a lot of confidence in the team at the moment and there is also a lot of competition, so everyone has to be on their toes if they want to get into the team.” He was part of a talented midfield, lining up alongside James Coppinger and Tommy Rowe, the latter also managing to find the back of the net in the victory over Crewe. Grant is relishing the experience he can take from both players. “They have got the knowhow and I take a lot of pointers from them each day in training,” he said.
“I have got to learn from them and hopefully pick stuff up from them, I think we link up well and hopefully I can get on the ball and make stuff happen.”

It was a very busy weekend in the County Senior League with 23 league fixtures taking place across the leagues’ four divisions.
Premier Division The weekend had the aura of importance at the top of the Premier Division. Previously second placed Frecheville travelled to fellow high-flyers Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. A single goal from Cole Payne gave Stocksbridge a 1-0 win over their rivals, and carries them into third place in the standings. Defending champions Frecheville fall to fourth place. League leaders Swallownest FC took advantage of Frecheville’s slip to take an 11 point lead at the top. Dan Mulloolley scored the only goal to give Swallownest a 1-0 victory. Goals from Enzo Guarini and Ryan Doxey gave Swinton Atheltic a 2-1 win over Wombwell Main, and carry them into second place. Jubilee Sports are just a point behind Frecheville in fifth position, after they defeated Athersley Recreation Reserves 3-2 at Chaucer School. Denaby United came out on top in the Denaby derby against Denaby Main. United won the game 5-2, helped in part by a hat-trick from Steve Ellor. Handsworth Parramore Reserves made it back-to-back wins for the first time since November, after a 2-0 away win over Millmoor Juniors. Ryan Simmonite and Harry Bamforth both made the score-sheet for Handsworth. AFC Penistone Church stretched their unbeaten run to six games with a 2-1 away win over North Gawber Colliery. Penistone sit in seventh position, but have only played 12 games so subsequently have a number of games in hand. Division One Oughtibridge WMFC took the lead again in Division One. They trailed Wickersley on goal difference, but an emphatic 7-0 away win over Davy this week saw them reclaim top spot. Alex Torr scored a hat-trick for Oughtibridge, with Josh Coulson (2), Chaz Tunnard and Strachan Sampson were also on the score-sheet. Wickersley were also victorious, beating High Green Villa 3-2 at Wickersley School. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 remain in third place, after a dramatic 5-4 away win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves at the MDC Sports Stadium. Daniel Beech scored a brace to help fourth placed Sheffield Bankers to a 2-1 win over Brinsworth Whitehill at Hillsborough Park Arena. South Kirkby Colliery beat Grimethorpe Sports 8-2 at Shafton Welfare Park. South Kirkby are in fifth position, just four points off the lead, but with at least three games in hand of all their rivals. Caribbean Sports extended their winning run to six games, as they beat Silkstone United 2-0 at home. Caribbean’s win means all the leagues’ top six won on Saturday, and just five points separate them. AFC Dronfield are just a point further behind following their 4-1 home win over Millmoor Juniors Reserves. Division Two North The top two met in the Division Two North, with league leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels Development hosting Dodworth Miners Welfare at the Look Local Stadium. Dodworth took the three points in a very impressive fashion, winning 4-1, with goals from Sam Severn, Ryan Barlow, Craig Allen and an own goal. The lead takes Dodworth within six points of the leaders, with three games spare. FC Graceholme are just three points further back, after a comfortable 3-0 away win over bottom side Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development. Graceholme also have three games in hand of Stocksbridge. South Kirkby Colliery Reserves continued their unbeaten start to 2017, as they beat Houghton Main Reserves 6-1 at the South Kirkby Miners Welfare Ground. Goals from Haydn Musgrave, Brad Day, Leigh Copping and Nathan Stonier gave Euroglaze FC a 4-2 away win over Bawtry Town. Division Two South Last time out league leaders Kiveton Park lost their first game for 10 matches, but they were quick to bounce back, as they defeated Millmoor Juniors Development 4-1 at Kiveton Park Miners Welfare Ground. With second placed New Bohemians not in action the win gives Kiveton a seven point advantage at the top. Davy FC Reserves beat Kiveton last week, but were soundly beaten 5-0 this time out by Caribbean Sports Reserves. Davy dropped a position to third, due to the damage done to their goal difference. Renishaw Rangers climbed out of the bottom two, as they beat bottom side Maltby Main Reserves 2-1 at Clowne College. Goals from Mark Clare and Jordan Beardsley gave Swinton Athletic Reserves a 2-0 win against AFC Dronfield Reserves. Swinton move into fourth position.

WILDER FRUSTRATED AT DRAW Chris Wilder couldn’t hide his frustration following Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Gillingham at Bramall Lane. Billy Sharp put the Blades in the ascendency in the first-half, but two goals from Gills midfielder Josh Wright after the interval meant Kieron Freeman’s fourth goal in five matches was only enough to earn the hosts a share of the spoils. But, despite creating a number of chances and seeing two goals ruled
out for offside, Wilder wasn’t impressed with his side, remarking: “I didn’t go mad after Walsall but I did this time, I’m not being disrespectful to the opposition, but we’ve chucked two points away. “Every team, every player we come up against has a go, but we talk about raising our game further, especially at home but we haven’t and it’s poor. “The game should be over by half-time. We’ve played well
enough to dominate the game and create chances. But we’re not ruthless enough, we lack that composure, final ball or finish too often.” A bitterly disappointed Wilder added: “I said at half-time that if we don’t put teams to bed then we could get punished and we were punished for a sloppy beginning to the secondhalf. “We were guilty of just going out there and expecting it to happen and we got a shock. “Gillingham have
caught us cold twice, they equaliser from nothing, then score off a long throw for the second, We told the players and emphasised to them that is Gillingham’s biggest weapon. “Myself and Alan (Knill) have told the players it’s coming and will keep coming, but they win the first and second ball and score another goal and suddenly we chasing a game when we should be out of sight.”
JOE DELIGHTED TO JOIN Joe Riley is determined to repay the faith that the Blades have put in the Manchester United youngster. The 20-year-old joined the Blades on-loan for the rest of the season on Tuesday and admits he is excited to be spending
a prolonged stint at Bramall Lane. On his move to South Yorkshire, the versatile defender remarked: “For the last few weeks I’ve been in contact with Sheffield United and the manager has shown a lot of interest in me which
obviously boosts your confidence as a player. “I really wanted to get out this month, to expose myself to firstteam football. “When you hear about Sheffield United you have to stand up and take notice, it is a massive club and an
ambitious one too. Riley added: “I’m delighted to be here until the end of the season and I can’t wait to get started. “This will be a big part of my development and it will even be more beneficial to do it here.”
UNDER 18S SILENCE TIGERS AT SHIRECLIFFE UNITED LADIES RUN RIOT AGAINST NOTTS COUNTY
United’s U18s made it two wins from two in 2017 with a deserved victory over Hull City at Shirecliffe. Second-half goals from George Cantrill, David Parkhouse and Tyler Smith were enough to see off the Tigers at the SteelPhalt Academy, with all four goals coming in the second period. The victory leaves United’s youngsters a point behind leaders Nottingham Forest with two games in hand and
five points clear of thirdplaced Huddersfield Town. United had the game’s first real chance in the 14th minute, Burton freed Smith down the right and from his cross Greaves saw his goal bound effort deflected behind for a corner. The Blades continued to press for the opening goal and after a succession of corners, only the linesman’s flag denied Burton following a swift move. In response, City rarely
troubled the home side, although they were a live threat on the break. United and in particular Smith were quickly out of the blocks after half-time and in the 63rd minute, from his cross CANTRILL rose highest to head home. And the Blades doubled their advantage nine minutes later, with Smith again involved. From his shot, PARKHOUSE reacted quickest to the rebound to score from close range. United were now firmly
in the ascendency and they put the game beyond the visitors with 16 minutes remaining. From Brown’s deep cross SMITH headed back across goal and into the net, to get the strike his efforts deserved. The only blemish on the game for United, was the late concession of a goal four minutes from time, but it never threatened the outcome of the contest.
WILDER ACTS TO STOP BLADES BLIP WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has moved swiftly in the transfer market to avoid any more slipups in the league. The Blades were cast aside by Walsall for the second time this season, and looked vulnerable at the back as Gillingham took a point from Bramall Lane. Wilder has turned to Jay O’Shea, who has joined on loan from Chesterfield, and has acquired the services of Bradford City’s, James Hanson. O’Shea is likely to provide cover for Mark Duffy, a player who would likely win Player Of The Year if Billy Sharp wasn’t in such a strong vain of
scoring form. O’Shea was Chesterfield’s top goal scorer with eight, and the held the title for most assists for Chesterfield this season, again with eight. The rumoured signing of James Hanson has divided many Blades on radio phone-ins and on social media. The towering striker (six foot four inches, to be exact) is likely to join the Blades before Tuesday’s fixture against Fleetwood Town. Hanson would certainly provide Wilder with a different option in tighter games, if Hanson had been introduced to proceedings in the
final ten minutes against the Gills, the Blades may have found a way to win. Leon Clarke has struggled to partner with Sharp and hasn’t been very efficient when used as a target man. Hanson’s
better periods at the Bantams were when he was partnered up with Nakhi Wells. Wilder could be trying to create a similar forward line at the Blades, with Hanson and Sharp pairing up-front.

After three cup games United returned to league action on Sunday and put in a professional performance against second-bottom Notts County Development. United already had gone close twice from the off when Melissa Celi backheeled United ahead after five minutes. That signalled the start of a blistering spell of play from United with slick passing and a total five goals in 18 minutes to secure the points so early in the game. Full-back Jodie Hartley ghosted into the box unmarked at a wide freekick to make it two and just a minute later Jen Pearson headed in for three. Sophie Bell was a constant threat down County’s left all game and she added goals four and five, the first from the penalty spot and the second after Celi’s shot was parried. 5-0 up after just 23 minutes, United were in cruise control. Christina Skull nearly got her first of the season, volleying against the top of the crossbar. After sustained possession two more goals were found just
before the end of the half. Hartley’s long shot was only parried and Pearson tapped the ball in for her second and United’s sixth. Then Kim Brown drilled a low home right at the whistle for number seven. To their credit County came out more defensively organised for the second half and as the afternoon got duller and colder the game went rather flat compared to the first half. United manager Dan O’Hearne had the luxury of rotating some of the squad with a triple substitution ten minutes into the half. United were still in complete control and didn’t have a single shot against them. Substitute striker Tania Marsden was the main threat but unusually wasn’t able to add to her career total of 97 United goals on this occasion. Bell was in fine form and made a great run through the County defence to set up substitute Shannon Smith for another tap in goal, after 76 minutes, for number eight. Just as it seemed the game had fizzled out Smith popped up to score the best goal of the match with a fine shot on 90 minutes. One minute later, in injury time, Bell made another run to the byeline and teed up Smith for her hat-trick and to make it the round ten for their good work.

THINGS WE CAN AND CANNOT CONTROL Carlos Carvalhal said circumstances in and out of his side’s control meant the Owls failed to come away with three points following their 2-1 defeat to Brighton at the Amex. The home side took the lead through Anthony Knockaert but were pegged back when Lewis Dunk put past his own goalkeeper. Glenn Murray was sent off for
the Seagulls for handballing in the area, but Fernando Forestieri’s resulting penalty was saved by David Stockdale. Despite a dominant second half from Wednesday, Brighton re-took the lead, Knockaert sliding home a cross to complete the scoring. The Owls then lodt two men late on, Steven Fletcher seeing red for an off-the-ball incident and Sam Hutchinson following
for a second yellow card offence. Carvalhal said: “We must win this game. “It was a case of some things we cannot control and some things that we must control. “We can’t control the missed penalty, because these things happen in football. “But we must control the red cards, this is something that cannot happen. “We did everything to win the game, just
like we do against every team in this competition, we would not have been happy with a draw. “The substitutions we made show how much we tried to win this game. “The second half we played very well, but the circumstances with things in and out of our control meant we didn’t win the game. “We wanted three points but unfortunately we didn’t achieve this.”
SUSPENSION FOR OWLS FLETCHER & HUTCH Sam Hutchinson and Steven Fletcher will serve suspensions following their dismissals in the clash with Brighton on Friday. Fletcher was shown a straight red card for his coming together with Albion midfielder Dale Stephens and will now
be out for three games (Bristol City, Wigan and Birmingham). Hutchinson’s earlier yellow at The Amex was upgraded to red in stoppage time and the midfield man will miss the Owls’ next two fixtures (Bristol City and Wigan).
