have every opportunity to win work. “We have put on workshops, organised events and provided support for business owners so they understand the rules, can find available contracts and know how to prepare their tender bids. This work is certainly paying off with amount of work being won by local firms increasing by a staggering 34% in the last four years. “When I became Mayor back in 2013 the council spent more money with firms located outside of borough so I am obviously delighted this position has been
turned on its head. The vast majority of work now goes to local firms, which supports the local economy and helps stimulate jobs and growth. I am committed to continuing our efforts to support local business where ever we can.” To make this possible, Doncaster Council’s procurement team has trained about 130 businesses on how to do business with the public sector and procurement rules have been changed to include local suppliers. Working with the Business Doncaster team, supplier engagement events
have enabled firms to meet public sector buyers, while other public sector agencies in Doncaster have also been encouraged to ‘buy local’. One local firm to have benefited is Emergency Response Training Ltd. Based at Canberra House, Finningley, close to Doncaster Sheffield Airport, they have supplied the council with appropriate Health and Safety training. Dan Fell, Chief Executive Officer, Doncaster Chamber, said: “Doncaster Chamber believes that it is important for local organisations
in the public and private sectors to do business with each other to generate new supply chains and keep work local where possible. For many years the Chamber has encouraged partners to ‘Buy Doncaster’ and, as such, is delighted that Doncaster Council has such a high percentage of its good and services locally.” If you are interested in finding out how you can become a supplier of the council or need procurement support go to: www. doncaster.gov.uk/ supplyingthecouncil

OVER £108M OF SPEND ON COUNCIL SERVICES WON BY LOCAL FIRMS Mayor Ros Jones’ pledge to ‘buy local’ is paying dividends with Doncaster based companies projected to win over £108m of council work in 2016/17. Despite reduced council budgets the amount of work awarded to firms in the borough has increased by over £27m since 2013/14 and now represents 68% of all council spend. Commenting on the news, Mayor Jones said: “I was determined Doncaster firms could bid for suitable contracts and by understanding what is involved in the procurement process

ALBERT SNODGRASS
My mate just rang me in tears. His wife has left him, taken his Bob Marley collection and the satellite dish! Poor sod. No woman, no sky! Eyelashes are suppose to prevent things from getting in your eyes but when I do have something in my eye, it’s always an eyelash. Eyeronic. Jokes about sausages are bad... but jokes about German sausages are the würst! Why don’t owls go on dates when it’s raining? Because it’s too wet to woo. Slept like a baby last night. Woke up every hour and just cried about my life. Saw Vincent van Gogh in a pub and asked if he wanted a drink. He said “No thanks, I’ve got one ‘ere!” When someone is murdered, the police investigate the spouse first. That pretty much tells you everything you need to know about marriage. A man entered a pun contest... He entered 10 different puns, hoping that at least one of them would win. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did. Yesterday I accidentally swallowed some food coloring. The doctor says I’m OK, but I feel like I’ve dyed a little inside. I’m on the snake diet. It’s the one where you lie on the floor all day, eat 25% of your body weight, and hiss at anyone who comes near you.
Which horse won the 2016 Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster Racecourse?
My wife says I act really immature and need to grow up. I told her to get the hell out of my pillow fort with that negative attitude.

The Hallam Region Spring Charity Ball Supporting The Children's Hospital Charity
Sheffield Hallam Events Management students raise thousands supporting local charities Through partnerships with both RBS and The Firm Networking Group Northern Networking Events are holding a black tie charity fundraising event taking place on the 25th February 2017 within the 1867 Lounge at Hillsborough Stadium. The event is due to take place between 6.30pm and 12.30am and shall include welcome drinks, three-course dinner and live entertainment from Beth Gabbitas (singer) and the magician Tom Wright. As they already have local businesses attending and more interested they would like to add in an element of networking to further the chances of making The Hallam Region Spring Charity Ball as memorable as possible. Northern Networking Events is made up of four passionate final year BSc Events Management students currently studying at Sheffield Hallam University. They are fully committed to not only achieving high grades within their degree but also in putting on a successful event to generate the highest donation they possibly can to the Children’s Hospital Charity, Sheffield. Community Fundraising Assistant for The Children’s Hospital Charity, Caitlin Hallatt said, “Over the years’ students from Sheffield Hallam have raised thousands for our charity and we’re so grateful for their continued dedication. We wish them every success with their events!” Their passion for the charity since they were introduced has resulted in them taking part in a number of fundraising activities pre-event, including bucket collections at Meadowhall and a bungee jump which combined raised £380.00 for the charity.
Jane Tattersall, the senior lecturer and course leader, expressed "We have worked with The Children's Hospital Charity for the last five years and have already helped to fund a new family suite in the new wing. Every year the students use innovative and creative ways to deliver a series of fundraising events, which they design and plan from, scratch. They relish working with real clients, venues and suppliers and continue to exceed all expectations and create events that are incredibly professional and memorable.” She also stated "In total over the last five years, our students have helped to raise an incredible £125,000 for local charities. We hope this year's events will be bigger and better than ever and raise life-changing funds for The Children's Hospital Charity,
as well as giving the students valuable practical experience to take forward into their careers." Tickets are priced at £45.00 for an individual or £400.00 for a table of 10. If you are unable to attend however there are some fantastic sponsorship opportunities such as raffle and auction prize donations from which you will receive public gratitude through social media and event advertisement space. Tickets are a first come first serve basis so please come along and buy a chair for charity, of which 100% of the donations will be going to! wouldn’t help them, or the council’s finances.” Sheffield City Council asks people to contact them if they are struggling to pay their council tax. Councillor Curran added: “We have a duty to collect council tax and will use the powers available to us to enforce non-payment. But we ask people to contact us as soon as possible if they’re struggling to pay. We will give advice and help them as much as we can, and it’s always better to get in touch sooner rather than later.” The council gives extra help under a Council Tax Hardship Scheme that it is also planning to maintain. Funding for this will be determined when the council’s budget for 2017/2018 is agreed in March.
A scheme to help people struggling to pay their council tax will be maintained by Sheffield City Council despite the authority facing huge budget pressures. The council this week announced that it plans to carry on offering a discount of up to 77 per cent for working age people on low incomes and up to 100 per cent for pensioners who qualify for its Council Tax Support Scheme. Last year the authority helped just over 52,000 households through the scheme. Councillor Ben Curran, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said: “We all know that the government cuts are hitting people hard. That’s why we set up our council tax support scheme, to help people on low incomes manage when the government abolished council tax benefit. “Despite continued austerity, we will never balance our books on the back of the poor and I am proud that we are not planning any cuts to this scheme. It is important to protect people who need it the most. We know lots of people are struggling to pay their bills and that in-work poverty is a bigger issue than ever. We also know that if we gave less support more people would fall into arrears and that

Free intensive skills help for 2,000 people who have been made redundant, plus a hotline to job vacancies, is available across the Sheffield City Region from last week. A £2million programme, available until March 2018 and dubbed ‘Open Doors’, provides training and skills and links jobseekers to employers with live, long-term vacancies. The service will include mentoring and any re-skilling, training, or up-skilling needed for the vacancies. The programme has been commissioned by the Sheffield City Region (SCR) through the Skills Funding Agency. The SCR was established six years ago to boost jobs and business growth across the nine local authority areas it covers, and Open Doors is part of its drive to do this. Nigel Brewster, Vice Chair of the SCR Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “This is a programme which will help people in a very intensive way at a time when they need expert support. It is something that the Sheffield City Region has seen a need for in line with its ongoing determination to do things that help the people of the city region.” Open Doors has been launched specifically to help jobseekers find longer-term, sustainable work and boost economic growth; it will also help
employers who have a specific skills gap. Interserve Learning & Employment, joint third largest training provider in the UK, is administering Open Doors on behalf of Sheffield City Region. Operations Manager at Interserve Sarah Loveday-Powell said: “Our team of advisers are experienced at providing career advice and training and they’re passionate about developing people to reach their full potential.”

WILL PENSIONERS BE FORCED INTO CARE HOMES? Thousands of pensioners could be forced into care homes against their will under secret NHS cost cutting plans. More than 13,000 elderly people are expected to be effectively evicted as health authorities refuse to fund care in their own homes. Charities expressed alarm, describing the new measures as “outrageous.” At least 37 Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) have drawn up new restrictions governing care for elderly and disabled patients, Freedom of Information disclosures reveal. The responses - from 122 of the country’s 209 CCGs - show that authorities have ruled that they would not pay for help at home if it was cheaper to send pensioners to a care home. Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK said: “ This is extremely
worrying. It is horrible to think that an older person who wants to stay at home could now be forced to go into a care home. “Not only does this go against Government policy of keeping people in their own homes, it ignores the fact that in certain areas there is already a grave shortage of care home beds.” Simon Bottery, from charity Independent Age, said: “It is frankly outrageous that older people could be made to move into residential care when they are able to live independently in their own home.” The investigation by Health Service Journal and campaigners Disability United examined NHS policies on Continuing Healthcare - a fund which pays for care of those whose needs are primarily medical. Around 19 of the 37 CCGs in question have banned paying for care at home if
the cost exceeds that of residential homes by more than 10 per cent. Another seven said they had set the threshold at 20, 25 or 40 per cent above care home fees. Several said they might be open to accusations that the restrictions breached human rights, but believed they could justify the decisions on cost grounds. Lib Dem MP Norman Lamb said it was “scandalous”. He said: “If someone is able to live independently forcing them to live in a care home is outrageous. “It treats people as second class citizens.” A Department of Health spokeswoman said: ‘It does not fall to us to approve an individual CCG’s policy.” Around 300,000 pensioners in England and Wales are living in a care

Could you and your spare room make a lasting difference to the life of a vulnerable young person in Sheffield? The team at Sheffield Supported Lodgings are looking for Sheffield residents who are willing to offer their spare room and support to help young people transform their lives. Supported Lodgings providers come from all walks of life and offer the use of their spare room for up to 12 months. In addition to accommodation, they also play a key role in supporting young people to develop the practical life skills they will need to live independently in the future. The Supported Lodgings team offers providers full support, training and guidance throughout from a designated member of staff, as well as a weekly payment of around £150. The new service is run by national youth homelessness charity Depaul UK in partnership with Sheffield City Council. The charity also provides the hugely successful Nightstop South Yorkshire service in Sheffield, through which

local volunteers to provide emergency accommodation for young people in their own homes. The Depaul Group was formed in 1989 by Cardinal Basil Hulme in response to the growing number of homeless people on the streets of London. He brought together as founders the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, and The Passage day centre – all organisations rooted in the life and work of Saint Vincent de Paul. Though a new service for Sheffield, it runs successfully in many other locations around the UK, including nearby in York. Nightstop Manager Amy Smith said: “The young people using Supported Lodgings don’t just need a roof over their heads, they also need a stable and secure home environment in which they are supported to mature and develop. “It’s a chance for members of the local community to make a tangible difference in the life of a young person facing homelessness.” Anyone interested in becoming a Supported Lodgings provider or finding out about other volunteering opportunities can get in touch via email at sheffieldsupportedlodgings@ depaulcharity.org.uk, or by calling 0114 2787152

SHEFFIELD THEATRES WINS PRESTIGIOUS THEATRE AWARDS HAT-TRICK Sheffield Theatres are celebrating having been awarded, for an unprecedented third time, the prestigious title of Regional Theatre of the Year 2017 at The Stage Awards. The award, presented to Chief Executive Dan Bates and Artistic Director Robert Hastie earlier today, was given in recognition of the outstanding work of the theatre during the last year. Industry judges recognised the theatre’s exciting programming which has included the commissioning of two new productions; Richard Taylor and Rachel Wagstaff’s award-winning musical Flowers for Mrs Harris and The Nap, a new comedy by Richard Bean; as well as big, classic productions of Show Boat and Annie Get Your Gun. In his speech, at the awards ceremony at London’s Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, Alistair Smith, print editor of The Stage and chair of the judging panel, congratulated Sheffield Theatres for their ‘compelling programme of work that speaks to local audiences but has the potential to attract theatregoers from across the UK.’ Praise was also given for the
Theatres’ policy of making theatre accessible to young people via the Live for Five initiative, which offers audience members aged 16 – 25 years, tickets for £5 and the recently launched Ignite scheme. Ignite will give every student in the city studying drama or performing arts the opportunity to attend Crucible productions free of charge. Sheffield Theatres’ Chief Executive Dan Bates said today: ‘We were delighted to have been nominated, but to have won the title again is quite overwhelming and tops off a fantastic twelve months. The award recognises not only the incredible achievements of our out-going
Artistic Director Daniel Evans but also the initiatives introduced by our new Artistic Director Robert Hastie. I would like to thank our hard-working and committed staff as well as everyone who has worked with us and visited us in the last twelve months – every one of you has contributed to making us the proud title-holders of Regional Theatre of the Year. Sheffield Theatres continues its commitment to compelling new work with the World Première of Dan Gillespie Sells (The Feeling) and Tom MacRae’s (Doctor Who) musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie from Wednesday 8 – Saturday 25 February at the Crucible.

I had half a dozen hefty and clipped up the indicators… I settled in to trout in quick succession, and then a single watch nuthatches, wagtails, and a variety of tits grayling, before deciding that I wasn’t going to feeding amongst the branches overhead, and find chub, and a move was required. Although tried to keep warm… I love catching beautiful brown trout, I’d much Two hours later, with no sign of any pike, my rather do it during the correct season when less toes were hurting. I’ve mentioned previously Having retired due to an arthritic condition how much I enjoy my small river fishing, and last year, I try to wrap up well, but with an after flicking out a few maggots, a stick float air temperature of -2, and a wind chill of -8, was plumbed to trip the bait just off bottom in it was time to leave. The line was freezing midstream. I tackled up with a stick float big enough to Fortunately, I’d also been out earlier in the support 5BB shot, and used four bulked together week to visit the River Dove, to try and find to get the bait down quickly in a short swim,
using the remainder to allow the bait to settle naturally through the last couple feet of water. First cast, and you’ve guessed it, another trout! They must have been feeding like mad despite an overnight frost, but a small, chubby, brownie offered great sport on light tackle as it charged around the swim before surrendering to the net. I continued to flick in maggots every fifteen seconds or so, hoping to draw fish from under a downstream raft, watching as the red tip of the float trundled along the flow, dipping every now and then, before sailing away as the two gentiles were sucked in by a variety of species. I had an hour or two in one swim, finding grayling in one area, dace and gudgeon in another, and of course trout wherever they could get in first! During the course of the next two hours, I had a delightful time picking off fish almost every trot through; for a little river, the Churnet is packed with fish, the gudgeon were pleasing to see, resplendent in pale blues and golds, and the dace were immaculate, shiny slivers offering frantic resistance. The bullyboy trout were intent on spoiling the party, and chunky grayling gave graceful confrontation in a strong flow, but each was a welcome addition to a rapidly growing haul… what a wonderful way to enjoy the river! Whilst pools and canals are frozen, the river is a superb alternative, and you may just be surprised what lies within. It is rare that I find more than two or three anglers on my travels along the river banks, and I really can’t think why, as I think it’s a far more attractive environment to fish, and the rewards are certainly there… you do have to try a little bit harder sometimes, but it just adds to the fun! Get out there, try your nearest river, and enjoy yourself.

BEN IS PURR-FECT FOR MILLERS New signing Ben Purrington will be a player that benefits the Millers not just now, but in years to come, says interim boss Paul Warne after the club secured his signature on Monday evening. The 20-year-old joins as the club’s fourth signing of the January transfer window following the arrivals of Richard O’Donnell, Alex Bray and Semi Ajayi and Warne expressed his delight at capturing a player he believes can make an impact at AESSEAL New York Stadium for years to come. “He’s perfect for us and he’s a good fit and we’re really pleased he’s coming in,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “I’ve said this before, but I want to hand this
team or squad over to the next manager in better form than I got it and I think he [Ben] is one of them who will be a good player for us in the next six months, 12 months, two years. Warne continued to admit that he has been an admirer of the Plymouth Argyle left back for some time now and would have liked to have acquired his services earlier in the window. “I’ve been watching him for a while and we’ve been trying to get it over the line for a bit,” he explained. “It would have been ideal if it had been done a few weeks ago, but as I’m learning very quickly things take longer than you think. “He’s a really good athlete and he can get up and down the line well. He’ll come in and
compete with Joe [Mattock] for the left back spot but I can always play a 3-5-2, which I’d like to do.” Purrington’s Millers switch will be his first away from Home Park, where he progressed through the academy into the senior setup but Warne is confident that his early enthusiasm about life in South Yorkshire will see him fit in well. “He’s been at one club all his life so it might take a little bit of time to settle in moving up north but he fancies the challenge,” he added. “The lad wanted to come and I spoke to him and really liked him. I’m all about the whole process and I want people that want to come and play here. He’s a really nice kid and he wants to play football and he’s done that a lot.”
The match-winner came in the 70th-minute from Adam Armstrong, who also hit the bar for the visitors in a first half before the Millers struck the woodwork themselves through Joe Mattock. “You’d be surprised to know I’m disappointed with the goal,” Warne said. “I don’t think any Manager is happy when someone concedes a goal. I think Fish (Darnell Fisher) got a bit square, he got inside him and tucked it in quite comfortably. It’s hugely frustrating. I think the lads, physically, have given me everything they’ve got. It didn’t really drop for them in the box today. “I felt we started the game really well but we didn’t have enough guile or class to cut them open. On another day one of those headers might have gone in. It was a fiery game in a good Yorkshire derby.” “I had a couple of injuries and had to makeshift the team. I had Tom Adeyemi drop out the game so all our team prep had gone up the wall. We didn’t know that until quarter-toone, so that was disappointing. We went fourfour-two and finished three-five-two because of the injuries.
“There’s no point berating the lads as we need to go again Tuesday night. We’ll do everything we can to bandage them up, pick them up for another game on Tuesday. “We did everything right to pick up at least a point today but lady luck isn’t shining down on me at the moment.” The Millers head to Nottingham Forest’s City Ground on Tuesday and Warne is hopeful he’ll have a few more bodies in his squad. Warne will, however, be without Darnell Fisher and Aimen Belaid who were both withdrawn from today’s clash because of hamstring strains. “I’ll have (Joe) Newell back and I’ll have (Tom) Adeyemi back,” he added. “It’ll be 24 hours too soon for Frecks (Lee Frecklington) but I might have some new bodies in the building. “I’d expect them (Belaid and Fisher) to be out for at least two weeks. Regarding recruitment I was trying to bring defenders in. “I’m hopeful and everyone is doing everything behind the scenes. I’m confident in getting new bodies in but I don’t know if they’ll be here in time for Tuesday.” “I’m going home disappointed with the result but I have to be positive with the lads.”
WARNE FRUSTRATED Interim boss Paul Warne assessed his side’s performance following the 1-0 defeat to Barnsley at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. “It had that feel of a nil-nil,” he said. “I thought one bit of class would be the difference but, unfortunately, it wasn’t my team who had it today. They carved us open once, maybe once in the first half as well. I don’t think the ‘keeper’s had much to do in the game. “There were a lot of free-kicks and stoppages of play. Unfortunately my team came out on the wrong end of a one-nil.”

The forward bagged his 16th and 17th goals of the season in the 3-0 win at Yeovil Town on Saturday. “It’s always nice to score goals and help the team and I feel like my game as a whole has improved just by working with the manager and the staff here,” he said. “We’ve got strength in depth in this team and a lot of quality.” The brace at Huish Park meant the Rovers’ No.9

HAPPY HANSON James Hanson says he is excited about the ‘fresh challenge’ that awaits him at Sheffield United. The striker, who has previously spent his entire professional career with his hometown club Bradford City, was officially confirmed as a Blade on Tuesday evening and he was relieved to see the deal concluded, albeit disappointed he will have to wait until next month to make his
debut. Hanson, who joins for an undisclosed fee on a two-and-a-half year deal, remarked: “I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be here, I’m absolutely delighted to have signed for Sheffield United. “It’s taken a while to get the deal over the line, but now I just can’t wait to get started against AFC Wimbledon. “I was gutted not to be able to play against
Fleetwood and it’s disappointing we haven’t got a game at the weekend, but it will give me the chance to work hard with the lads on the training ground.” The 29-year-old added: “The time had probably come at Bradford for a change for both parties, the situation there was unclear in terms of a contract offer and I wanted to secure my future. “Once United came

calling my mind was made up and I made that clear to my agent. This is a fresh challenge and one I’ve probably needed for the last year or so to get my career moving forward again. “I’m used to playing in front of a crowd with expectation and that will be no different here, it’ll probably be even greater and it’s something I relish.”
O’SHEA OPTIMISTIC Jay O’Shea says swapping Derbyshire for Yorkshire was an easy decision to make and insists it’s a move that should hopefully with further his career. The versatile attacker has been a mainstay in the successes Chesterfield have enjoyed in recent seasons and he hopes this loan deal, which is initially until the end of the season, is one that will see him
flourish further. O’Shea, who is out of contract at the Proact in the summer commented: “Once I knew Sheffield United were interested and had submitted a loan offer on Friday I told Chesterfield I was very interested. “From there it has all happened very quickly, I had little hesitation having spoken with the manager and I’m excited about what the
future might hold. “The interest of a club like Sheffield United makes you want to listen and the chance to sign for a club chasing promotion to the Championship would be very appealing to anyone.” The 28-yearold continued: “Obviously United are top of the league, a big club with ambition and when you have the opportunity to come

U23S TRIUMPH IN DERBY PLUMCO United’s U23s made it nine games unbeaten with victory in the Professional Development League at Stocksbridge on Monday afternoon. A first-half brace from substitute Tyler Smith, who replaced the injured Marc McNulty in the 10th minute, ensured the Blades beat Barnsley at the Look Local Stadium. SMITH had only been on the field for 60
seconds having taken the place of McNulty, when he rounded Walton and slotted home. Skipper James Wilson headed over midway through the first period, before SMITH doubled United’s lead, firing home after good work by Scougall. United continued to have the better chances as half-time approached. Mallon lashed an effort wide, before Brooks saw an effort saved by the
face of Walton, who knew little about his contribution. Before the break, Brooks forced Walton into a fingertip save, before Ramsdale was called into action for the first time to deny Carvell. The personal battle between Brooks and Walton continued in the second-half, with the Barnsley stopper again prevailing. And on the hour, ROWE capitalised on the Blades losing
possession in defence before rounding Ramsdale and bringing the visitors back into the contest. Hirst and Ford were introduced with Hallam and Scougall making way and Slater tested Walton twice in a matter of minutes with longrange efforts. Barnsley battled gamely, but never looked like breaching the Blades again, as the climb up the table continues.

FIGHT TO THE END Carlos Carvalhal has spoken of his pride with recent statistics showing the Owls have scored more late, late goals than any other team in the Football League. Wednesday have bagged a high number of injury time goals this season, some of which have won all three points, including Steven Fletcher’s penalty
against Rotherham and Kieran Lee’s dramatic double finishes against Tuesday night’s opponents Bristol City, and Nottingham Forest. Carvalhal said: “It’s absolutely fantastic. “Because this represents a lot of things, it shows how much we want to win games and it shows how much we play with our heart.
“The team plays with a strong mentality and want to achieve goals in the last minutes to win the games, I am very happy with this. “If you ask me if I would prefer to win 3-0 or 4-0 and have the games calm then of course! “But the teams we play know they are facing the team that played in the play-off final last season, so
Carlos Carvalhal spoke fondly of his time with Sheffield Wednesday in an exclusive interview with swfc.co.uk, and was particularly proud of a record he held going into 2017 with the Owls. The Portuguese head coach ended 2016 as Wednesday’s most successful manager of the last 50 years, a record he was pleased to have. Carvalhal said: “It’s
fantastic news, I am very, very proud about that. “I am 51 years old, so since I was born, to the end of 2016, if we have the best percentage of points in this period it’s something amazing. “I am very proud because these things stay a long time with the club. “I know that me and my staff are the first non-British coaches in the history of the club. “This means that one
day when I leave the club there is something very important we did at Sheffield Wednesday. “In this moment I can’t forget that these kind of things we don’t achieve
