SIXTIES MUSIC LEGENDS TAKE THE STAGE IN DONCASTER Cast welcomes Sixties chart toppers The Swinging Blue Jeans and Some Guys Have All the Luck – the Rod Stewart Story, as well as the return of Halfway to Paradise –The Billy Fury Story, The Manfreds and The Searchers this spring at Cast, Doncaster. The iconic 60s Mersey band The Swinging Blue Jeans (Wednesday 15 February, 7.30pm) bring their ‘Hippy Hippy Shake’ to Doncaster for a sensational 60s experience featuring all the major hits including ‘Good Golly Miss Molly’, ‘You’re No Good’, ‘It’s Too Late Now’ and ‘Don’t Make Me Over’. Lead guitarist and vocalist Alan Lovell has been the right hand man to founder members of The Swinging Blue Jeans since the 90’s. Since founder members Les Braid’s sad passing in 20015 and Ray Ennis’ retirement, Alan has continued to tour
successfully with Peter Oakman (Bass Guitar), Graham Hollingworth (Drums) and Jeff Bannister (Keyboards / Guitar). Billy Fury and his original Furys’ Tornados play together once again during an electric and emotional 20th anniversary tour of Halfway to Paradise – The Billy Fury Story (Thursday 23 February, 7.30pm), thanks to new technology and with the sensational Colin Gold as Fury. Fury’s Tornado’s remain Billy’s longest ever serving band & continue to tour in the hit show with all original members. They remember their old friend and boss by performing live those 29 magical Billy Fury hits, -”I Will”, “Last Night Was Made For Love”, “Wondrous Place”, “Jealousy”, “Halfway To Paradise” and many, many more. Cast welcomes back BBC Radio 2 star Paul
Jones and original members of sixties hitmakers The Manfreds (Friday 24 March, 7.30pm) to perform many of their 1960s hits as part of their UK tour. Back in the sixties, Manfred Mann was a hit-making machine, from 1964 to 1969 they were almost ever-present in the charts due to such classic hits as 5-4-3-2-1, Doo Wah Diddy Diddy, Pretty Flamingo and Come Tomorrow. Their music has remained timeless due to the undercurrents of jazz and rhythm and blues that was infused into their music. After splitting in 1969, the band (without Manfred Mann himself) reformed in 1991 as The Manfreds, with singer Paul Jones, keyboard player (formerly drummer) Mike Hugg and guitarist Tom McGuinness, along with long-standing members drummer Rob Townsend, bassist Marcus Cliffe and Simon Currie on
flute and sax. With total record sales well in excess of 50 million, The Searchers still have great appeal to audiences of all ages, and they return to Cast on Sunday 7 May. Throughout a fantastic career spanning five decades they have toured the globe with classic hits including Sweets For My Sweet; Needles and Pins; Don’t Throw Your Love Away; Sugar and Spice and When You Walk In The Room. The Searchers concert of hits combines anecdotes and reminiscences alongside album recordings, B-sides and a selection of other collector and well known favourites. The Searchers are John McNally, Frank Allen, Spencer James and Scott Ottaway. Some Guys Have All the Luck (Saturday 20 May) celebrates the life and career of Rod Stewart, one of rock music’s greatest icons, from street busker through to international superstar.
Starring Paul Metcalfe and featuring a fantastic live band with impeccable credits, and visiting Doncaster for the first time, the stage show is crammed full of hits such as Maggie May, Sailing, Baby Jane, Da Ya Think I’m Sexy, Tonight’s The Night, The First Cut Is The Deepest and You’re In My Heart - to name but a few! previously competed in the 2015 tournament, having reached three TV quarter-finals during 2016 and the World Cup of Darts semi-finals alongside brother Ronny. With the world’s top four players - Van Gerwen, Anderson, Peter Wright and Adrian Lewis qualifying by right, Klaasen and Huybrechts are two of the six Wildcard selections. Six-time Premier League champion Phil Taylor is a Wildcard for the first time after dropping down to sixth in the PDC Order of Merit, with fellow former champions James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld joining Dave Chisnall in completing the ten-player field. A record £250,000 first prize is on offer for the 2017 Betway Premier League champion, with a £25,000 League Leader’s Bonus also on offer for the player who finishes the regular season at the top of the league table.

IRWIN MITCHELL PARTNER RUNS LONDON MARATHON FOR SUPPORT DOGS Irwin Mitchell partner Matthew Palmer is running the Virgin Money London Marathon on 23 April to raise money and awareness for national assistance dog charity Support Dogs. Sheffield-based Support Dogs trains and provides specialist assistance dogs to deliver life changing support to children with autism and adults with disabilities and epilepsy. Matthew (46) is an associate director and head of portfolio delivery at national law firm Irwin Mitchel LLP in the city. Support Dogs was one of the company’s charities of the year in 2016. Matthew will join more than 30,000 other runners to take part in the 26.2 mile marathon through the streets of London and hopes to complete it in a personal best of three hours and 50 minutes. With the support of colleagues, friends and suppliers, he is also aiming to top his fundraising target of £1,500. The money will be added to Irwin Mitchell’s total and be spent on training and the lifetime support needed for ‘Mitchell’, the trainee assistance dog named by the law firm. Said Matthew: “I am a dog lover and know the value having dogs has given to me and my family. Over the past year, Support Dogs has
5
frequently visited our offices and I’ve been very impressed to hear about the life-changing work that they do – especially with children with autism. “Training six days a week is hard during the winter and sometimes it is only my commitment to the charity that gets the shoes on my feet when its dark outside and the temperature is minus two degrees. Thinking of the good use Support Dogs can put this money to really sustains my motivation.” Danny Anderson, fundraising manager at Support Dogs, said: “We receive fantastic support from Irwin Mitchell and it is great that Matthew is running for Support Dogs. We are entirely funded through voluntary donations and without the support of our fundraisers we wouldn’t be able to continue our important work, training and providing specialist assistance dogs which make such a huge difference to people’s lives.” Rachel Cox, solicitor and committee member of Irwin Mitchell Charities Foundation, said: “We are delighted to support Matthew in this latest fundraising challenge in aid of Support Dogs. The work they do improves people’s quality of life remarkably and gives people with disabilities much needed independence.” To find out more about Support Dogs visit www.supportdogs.org.uk or follow @ supportdogsuk on twitter.

FRANKLY SINATRA DOES IT HIS WAY AT THE CITY HALL The world’s number one Sinatra performer, Stephen Triffitt, visits Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 16th March for Frankly Sinatra, a stunningly authentic tribute to the legendary crooner and his unparalleled career. Straight from Las Vegas to the Steel City, the show celebrates the golden anniversary of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ most famous live recording, 'Sinatra Live at the Sands', with a brand new production featuring many of the songs from that classic album all performed with the inimitable swing, swagger and velvet vocals of Frank Sinatra in concert. Acclaimed worldwide as the master of Sinatra, Stephen Triffitt has enjoyed popular and critical success, performing across the globe to spellbound audiences. He has previously starred as Frank for three seasons at Las Vegas’ legendary Sands Casino, following in the footsteps of the man himself. Stephen has also originated the role of Ol’ Blue Eyes in the original West End production of 'The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas' that toured the USA, Canada and Europe, as well as playing to a sold out Royal Festival Hall and London Palladium with his own solo Sinatra spectacular.
His resemblance to Sinatra has been described as "unsettlingly perfect"; from sculpted hair and twinkling blue eyes, all the way down to his shiny black patent leather shoes, Stephen Triffitt truly embodies Sinatra. And he not only walks the walk, he talks the talk. A masterful performance sees those famous Sinatra vocals delivered with consummate ease as Stephen effortlessly recreates the velvety smooth, unmistakable voice of one of the greatest singers in history. The show will feature a host of Sinatra classics, including 'Fly Me to the Moon', 'Mack the Knife', 'New York, New York', 'My Way', 'That’s Life', 'Under My Skin', 'Lady is a Tramp', 'My Kind of Town', 'All the Way' and 'Luck Be a Lady', all performed impeccably and with all of Frank’s laid back charm. Backed by the fantastic sound of big band swing, Triffitt is the 'Chairman of the Board'; frankly the best thing since Sinatra himself! Tickets for Frankly Sinatra at Sheffield City Hall are available online at sheffieldcityhall.co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.
INVESTMENT IN INNOVATION Businesses are benefiting from upgraded internet and phone systems at Chesterfield Borough Council’s two innovation centres. Following IT upgrades tenants at Tapton Park and Dunston Innovation Centres now receive: • 1GB high speed digital connectivity, boosting their ability to sell and promote their products and services online • A state-of-the-art Mitel telephone system which enables tenants to work
in agile ways, taking calls when away from the centres. All call charges are part of the managed services provided at the centres. Councillor Tricia Gilby, cabinet member for economic growth, said: "A thriving local economy is our key priority. The provision of state-of-theart facilities to encourage new business ventures as well as supporting more established businesses is essential to achieving that objective."
Councillor Mick Wall, Chair of the Chesterfield Innovation Centres Management Board said, "Our innovation centres, supported by a team of excellent staff, provide a superb environment for businesses to grow and expand, providing valuable, high skilled jobs for local people." Hundreds of companies have used the centres over the years to successfully grow their businesses and feedback about the improvements is very
positive: Ian Ford, of First B2B said: “Coming to Tapton Park was one of the best decisions we have made and with the initiative of bringing in very high speed fibre and telephony we would struggle to find a better solution to our accommodation requirements anywhere else in the area.” Matthew Brailsford, of Custom Solar, said: “Having vision for the future is why I love having my business at the Dunston Innovation Centre. With renewable energy, super-fast broadband and affordable offices I cannot think of a better space close to Chesterfield. “Along with fantastic centre staff who support local apprenticeships and innovative businesses I feel very much at home.” Various office sizes are available at each centre and range from a virtual office or furnished rent a desk suite to offices from 202 sq ft to 1,500 sq ft. Leases can be put in place quickly and have flexible easy in-easy out terms to encourage take-up. This allows businesses to be operational within a minimum time period and adjust quickly to their changing accommodation requirements as they develop. Other key features include telephone, admin, post and reception support, a free on-site business advisor offering access to specialist innovation support and access at discounted rates to the conference and meeting rooms in both centres. While the centres have high occupancy levels offices continuously become available as start-up businesses expand and move to bigger premises in the town.
Start-up, small or medium sized businesses interested in having a business unit should contact the centre manager by emailing teri-louise.horne@ chesterfield.gov.uk or visit www.innovation chesterfield.co.uk for further information.

HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE INTEGRATION TOO SLOW The National Audit Office warns that progress with integration of health and social care has, to date, been slower and less successful than envisaged and has not delivered all of the expected benefits for patients, the NHS or local authorities. As a result, the government’s plan for integrated health and social care services across England by 2020 is at significant risk. In the face of increased demand for care and constrained finances, while the Better Care Fund, the principal integration initiative, has improved joint working, it has not yet achieved its potential. The Fund has not achieved the expected value for money, in terms of savings, outcomes for patients or reduced hospital activity, from the £5.3 billion spent through the Fund in 2015-16. Nationally, the Fund did not achieve its principal financial and service targets over 2015-16, its first year. Planned reductions in rates of emergency admissions were not achieved, nor did the Fund achieve the planned savings of £511 million. Compared with 2014-15, emergency admissions increased by 87,000 against a planned reduction of 106,000, costing £311 million more than planned. Furthermore, days lost to delayed transfers of care increased by 185,000, against a planned reduction of 293,000, costing £146 million more than planned. The Fund has, however, been successful in incentivising local areas to work together; more than 90% of local areas agreed or strongly agreed that delivery of their plan had improved joint working. Local areas also achieved improvements at the national level in reducing permanent admissions of people aged 65 and over to residential and nursing care homes, and in increasing the proportion of older people still at home 91 days after discharge from hospital into reablement or rehabilitation
services. There is general agreement across the health and social care sectors that placebased planning is the right way to manage scarce resources at a system-wide level. However, local government was not involved in the design and development of the NHS-led sustainability and transformation planning programme. Local authorities’ engagement in the planning and decision making phase has been variable, although four sustainability and transformation planning areas are led by local authority officials. The Department of Health and the Department for Communities and Local Government have identified barriers to integration, such as misaligned financial incentives, workforce challenges and reticence over information sharing, but are not systematically addressing them. Research commissioned by the government in 2016 concluded that local areas are not on track to achieve the target of integrated health and social care by 2020. Today’s report also found that NHS England’s ambition to save £900 million through introducing seven new care models may be optimistic. The new care models are as yet unproven and their impact is still being evaluated. According to the NAO, while the Departments and their partners have set up an array of initiatives examining different ways to transform care and create a financially sustainable care system, their governance and oversight of the initiatives is poor. The Integration Partnership Board only receives updates on progress of the Better Care Fund with no reporting from other integration programmes. In addition, the NAO found no compelling evidence to show that integration in England leads to sustainable financial

savings or reduced acute hospital activity. While there are some good examples of integration at a local level, evaluations have been inhibited by a lack of comparable cost data across different care settings, and difficulty tracking patients through different care settings. The NAO today reiterates its emphasis from its 2014 report on the Better Care Fund that there is a need for robust evidence on how best to improve care and save money through integration and for a co-ordinated approach. Amyas Morse, head of the National Audit Office, said today: “Integrating the health and social care sectors is a significant challenge in normal times, let alone times when both sectors are under such severe pressure. So far, benefits have fallen far short of plans, despite much effort. It will be important to learn from the over-optimism of such plans when implementing the much larger NHS sustainability and transformation plans. The Departments do not yet have the evidence to show that they can deliver their commitment to integrated services by 2020, at the same time as meeting existing pressures on the health and social care systems.”

SHEFFIELD’S TRAMLINES FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES BIGGEST LINEUP YET Tramlines - Sheffield’s innercity music festival - is thrilled to unveil the lineup for its 2017 event, which will take place from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd July. Headline acts include iconic indie band The Libertines, legendary ska band Toots and the Maytals and R&B girl-group All Saints. The lineup spans internationally acclaimed talent and the most exciting emerging talent, and also includes Metronomy, The Coral, We Are Scientists, Twin Atlantic, The Pharcyde, Hot 8 Brass Band, M.O, Omar Souleyman, Cate Le Bon, Nadia Rose, Akala, and many more. The ninth edition of Tramlines will be an exclusively outdoor event, spanning three of Sheffield’s best park spaces and allowing the festival to bring its biggest lineup to date. Tramlines remains one of the best value UK festival tickets around, with weekend passes from just £38 plus booking fee. Tickets are now on sale from www.tramlines. org.uk Since its inception in 2009,
Tramlines Festival has carved a name for itself as one of the most genre-busting music festivals around. Previous acts to have graced the Tramlines stages include Public Enemy, Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans, Sister Sledge, The Cribs, Katy B, George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic, alt-J, the xx, Dizzee Rascal, Martha Reeves Roots Manuva, Slaves, Sugarhill Gang, Buzzcocks and The Selecter. As a former winner of Best Metropolitan Festival at the UK Festival Awards and having been shortlisted for an NME Best Small Festival award, Tramlines continues to set itself apart with its inner-city location, cutting-edge music offering and unbeatable ticket price. From just £38 (plus booking fee) for a weekend ticket, festivalgoers are in for a real treat this year. The Main Stage on Ponderosa park is a melting pot of sounds, from the indie of The Libertines, reggae from Toots and the Maytals, and R&B from one of the biggest girl bands of the 90s, All Saints. Rock fans
are catered for with Glaswegian quartet Twin Atlantic, while fans of hip-hop, rap and grime can check out the fast-rising star of British hip-hop, Loyle Carner, the melodic sounds of The Age of LUNA, hotly tipped Nadia Rose and former Mobo winner Akala. The much-loved Metronomy serve up electronica, girl group M.O bring 90s-inspired pop, Hot 8 Brass Band bring the sound of New Orleans to Sheffield with a set of infectious jazz and funk, while R&B, soul and reggae are provided by the legendary Don Letts. Fans of indie, rock and hip-hop will find tons to check out on Devonshire Green, with sets from New York-based We Are Scientists, Mersey five-piece The Coral, and hip-hop royalty The Pharcyde, who arrive in Sheffield 20 years after the release of the timeless ‘Bizarre Ride II’. Devonshire Green is also the place to discover emerging talent with performances from rising scuzz-rock band Cabbage, the dynamic Welsh outfit Estrons, altR&B from Bossy Love and indie
LA PLATA S.C.
band Fizzy Blood. Meanwhile, the Folk Forest, the ever-popular third stage at Tramlines, is located in the beautiful setting of Endcliffe Park. Its relaxed atmosphere and woodland location is not only the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, but the ideal backdrop to witness performances in world music, alt-pop, folk, jazz and more. Highlight performances come from Syrian musician Omar Souleyman, alt-pop artist Cate Le Bon, progressive-pop trio Blaenavon, the experimental Yorkston Thorne Khan, Rough Trade signings Goat Girl and much more. The decision to tweak the format of Tramlines 2017 came in response to event organisers listening to feedback from its festival goers. Tramlines Festival Director Sarah Nulty explains: “After each festival, we turn to our audience to find out what they’d like to see at the next event. The overwhelming feedback was that people wanted to see bigger acts on the Tramlines
stages. By streamlining Tramlines to three outdoor stages, it’s meant we could deliver something really special. Sheffield is often hailed as an ‘Outdoor City’, and has a ton of public parks, and a third of it sits within the glorious Peak District National Park. It is the UK’s leading destination for people seeking outdoor adventure, and we are excited to present an exclusively outdoor event for 2017.”
Earlybird and first release tickets for Tramlines Festival 2017 sold out in record time, but second release weekend tickets are now on sale for just £38 plus booking fee. Tickets can be purchased from www.tramlines.org.uk For up-to-the-minute information about Tramlines 2017 visit www.tramlines.org.uk or follow Tramlines on Twitter @tramlines

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I write this column every week, catch or not, and sometimes, it’s hard to know what to write about, especially when time or the weather is against me; this week, is one of those weeks. In truth, I’ve struggled once again as a result of poor choices, and even poorer weather, which has seen fit to affect my weekly trips out, but I did get an unexpected result… My pike angling this year has been very hit and miss, with plenty of smaller fish, but nothing of any real size or repute, so once again, I set out to remedy this with a short visit to a local club water with a good head of snappers. On arrival, after torrential overnight rain, it was quickly apparent that only certain swims could be fished comfortably, the remainder were ideal for a cleansing mud bath, so I quickly dumped my kit and got the brolly up; I wasn’t taking any chances with a forecast that predicted yet more water. The intention was to fish a couple of deadbaits, but this time, I’d brought the lure rod just in case the baits were untouched. Each was presented on a pair of size 6 semi-barbless trebles, anchored with a three ounce lead, and left to invite attention. One was gently placed in the margins against likely cover, the other pitched into open water, after being injected with mackerel flavoured oil. I sat back to wait, and had just poured the first tea from my flask when the alarm bleeped, the drop off, well, dropped off, and line peeled from the spool! I’m always keen to hit a pike run early, I’d rather risk a missed fish than a deeply hooked one, so I leapt from my chair, and gripped the line gently to see what I could feel. The fish was steadily moving away, so I lifted the
rod and struck into… precisely nothing! ‘Eh? How did that happen? That was a banker? I reeled back in to find that my bait hadn’t a mark on it, rather than the mauling I expected! I cast it back out, and within seconds, the same thing happened again. It wasn’t a line bite, the fish moved away again, I could feel it once more, but I missed it again! Perplexing to say the least, especially when it happened five minutes later! Three missed takes within half an hour, then it went quiet. A book chapter read, another cup of tea consumed, and an hour later, the drop off released once more, the alarm bleeped, and line spilled forth. Another take! This was the other rod though, right under my feet, so I let the fish move over the marginal shelf, and lifted into it. For the fourth time, I failed to connect, and by now, I’d gathered it was probably smaller pike, picking up the bait, and moving off before turning it to swallow; pesky things, but I was determined to at least catch one! I quickly made up another trace, using smaller hooks, closer together, and remounted the unmarked bait. As I leaned out to lower it into the water, the other alarm sounded, but after dropping the rod in hand, I missed that one too! Five runs, five missed… It was driving me mad, but I was quietly confident the next inquisitor would fall foul of my crafty change… A few minutes later, my drop off flinched, then crept up towards the reel spool before falling away. Once again, for the sixth time, I pinched the line to feel a fish on the other end, then swept the rod aloft to connect, at last, with a fish! Don’t get me wrong, it was never going to break any records, but at least I was attached to something. Two minutes later, and a shiny pike of around 6-7lbs was safely netted, unhooked, admired and returned; riddle solved, it was
definitely jacks picking up the bait, but I was pleased to have got to the bottom of what would otherwise have been a frustrating few hours. If the jacks were feeding hard however, I wasn’t keen to fish with 3lb test curve rods for such small fish, so packed away, and got the lure rod out for some fun instead. I circled both pools, drawing only a half-hearted follow from another small pike, but nothing else. After two hours, it became obvious that baits were the tactic for the day, so I retired to the van, put the kit away, and walked back to where I’d seen another angler who asked about my lure set up. As time passed, Peter and I discussed a few different methods, before our conversation moved to light lure fishing, something he was considering as he wanted a more mobile approach. It was nice to be able to discuss the kit I used, and how we thought it compared to other tackle, and after thirty minutes, I remembered I had an Ecogear ‘PocketIn’ set in the van, a spare, bought in duplicate, packed with jig heads and lures, which I thought Peter might find useful. Gratefully accepted, we exchanged contact details, and I was delighted when Peter later sent a text asking for further advice with a view to buying a rod and reel suitable for wandering the canals, then using roving tactics to try and catch some fish. So, there you go, my unexpected result; a new recruit to the ranks of light lure fishing, an angler itching to try something new, and a genuinely nice chap who was a pleasure to spend an hour with. I can’t wait for the text which tells me he has caught his first perch or chub using such tactics, and, if I’m honest, I’d rather spend an hour or two encouraging an angler to try something new, something which I know he will enjoy, than spend hours in the wet trying to catch jack pike… it’s much more rewarding, and far less mucky!

MILLERS SUFFER LATE GOAL HEARTBREAK LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
Millers caretaker manager Paul Warne believed his side were worth a share of the spoils as Milan Djuric’s late winner saw Rotherham United make the long trek north empty-handed despite a hardworking performance. Following an even first half, devoid of clear cut chances, the clash looked to be heading for a goalless draw until sub Djuric headed home the rebound after Richard O’Donnell had superbly denied fellow sub Matty Taylor’s thunderbolt shot. Speaking afterwards, Warne insisted that his side were not duly rewarded for their efforts at Ashton Gate. “I didn’t think there was hardly anything between the sides,” Warne bemoaned. “It was a game of few chances. People will think it’s the same old story but I have to be honest I don’t think we deserved to lose. I think a point would have been a fair result. Noteam ripped the other side apart.
“The lads gave me loads of endeavour and effort which I asked for but unfortunately for us, we were on the wrong side of it again. You can guarantee a performance level but not a result.” In a close first 45 minutes, Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham fluffed his lines by firing wide with the goal at his mercy before Danny Ward had Rotherham’s best effort of note, soon after, when he fired wide following good work by Joe Newell. However, Rotherham’s work was undone when Djuric notched his first goal for the hosts - to the disappointment of the Millers’ interim boss. “We set up 4-1-4-1 initially and I thought we curtailed them quite well in the first half,” Warne insisted. “They didn’t have many chances, although we did not have a lot either. Wardy had one early one, when he nicked his shot just wide of the post. “I thought we looked pretty comfortable.
I thought it was a tight game and I’m not saying either side were great attacking forces. Majority of my lads performed to their limits so as a manager I go in after and I don’t know how much more I can ask of them physically.” Despite Rotherham slipping to another away loss, Warne was quick to praise the impact of Ben Purrington, who impressed on his first outing in Millers’ colours. “I thought Purrington was outstanding,” Warne enthused. “I thought Ben was excellent and that was the reason we brought him in. You can see he is athletic. He stopped a lot of crosses in the first half and he was against no mug, in David Cotterill. I thought he kept him really quiet and you could see his physicality. “He kept going till the very end in what was a tough situation when we went three at the back but he’s going to have a great career in the game.”
KIDS FOR A QUID V BLACKBURN
focused on introducing the next generation to the club. “Last season saw increased numbers in this initiative, so we are expecting an equally good response as we welcome Blackburn to South Yorkshire.”
Rotherham United’s upcoming home fixture against Blackburn Rovers has been designated as a ‘Kids for a Quid’ day. Youngsters aged 12 and under can come and watch the Millers in action for just £1 for the visit of Blackburn on Saturday 11th February.* Tickets are on sale now for the match at
AESSEAL New York Stadium, which is a kick off 3pm. This is the first of two games which have been assigned as ‘Kids for a Quid’ fixtures and follows the recent ‘Friends for a Fiver’ match against Burton Albion which proved extremely popular with home supporters. The club’s commercial director Steve Coakley is confident that the special offer will again attract the next generation of supporters, after previous successful campaigns. “The ‘Friends for a Fiver’ fixture with Burton was extremely well received and we expect a similar uptake for our first ‘Kids for a Quid’ game,” he said. “Both initiatives are aimed at attracting new supporters to AESSEAL New York Stadium, whilst the ‘Kids for a Quid’ campaign is
Darren Ferguson felt battling Morecambe deserved praise after holding Rovers to a draw at the Keepmoat Stadium. Rovers had to settle for a point after John Marquis’ 18th goal of the season cancelled out Peter Murphy’s opener. Despite dominating the final stages, a decisive second strike did not come. Ferguson said: “No opposition is going to just
turn up and roll over, but I don’t think my players could have done anything more to win the game – some days you get the breaks, and some days you don’t. “And to be fair to Morecambe, once they went ahead they had something to hold on to. I thought they were excellent. “I didn’t think we started the game great, we were a little bit sloppy, but we were totally
dominant in the second half once we got the goal.” The point maintained Rovers’ impressive home form, with no side coming to the Keepmoat Stadium and claiming victory in Sky Bet League Two this season. Ferguson added: “We have been very good at home, and this is another point which takes us to 62 which is a really good total. It has always been about how many points we can get. “Plymouth and Carlisle have won, and Exeter are flying, so it’s far from over. We’ve got a long way to go – more than a third of the season to go. But so long as we keep applying ourselves the way we have, then we will have a chance.”

DF: PLAYERS GAVE EVERYTHING ROVERS DOUBLE AWARD NOMINATION Darren Ferguson and John Marquis have been nominated for Sky Bet League Two Manager and Player of the Month awards. Having won all five games in January, Ferguson’s men ended the month in top spot with a seven-point gap (now five) over second placed Plymouth Argyle. Rovers managed to score three goals in all but one of their victories during the month. John Marquis, meanwhile, was on the scoresheet six times in those five games, notably scoring braces against Portsmouth and Yeovil. The striker scored one of the goals of the month at Huish Park, picking up the ball on the half way line before jinxing his way through the Yeovil defence and slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.
Fifteen games took place in the County Senior League last Saturday, with Division One having a particularly busy day.
Premier Division League leaders Swallownest FC’s game was postponed, so defending champions Frecheville had the chance to cut the deficit at the top. They took the opportunity beating AFC Penistone Church 5-0 at the Frecheville Sports and Social Club ground. Swallownest do still have a 10 point lead though, with a game spare. Wombwell Main made it back-to-back 3-2 wins, as they beat Millmoor Juniors 3-2 at Grange Park. The win takes Wombwell into ninth place in the standings. Division One League leaders Wickersley FC made it four consecutive wins, with a big 6-0 win over High Green Villa at the Thorncliffe FA Hub. Wickersley have scored 6 twice in that run. Wickersley’s lead at the top is extended to five points, as second placed Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 lost 3-2 away to Caribbean Sports. Caribbean have won all of their last seven games and climb into fourth position. Third placed Oughtibridge WMFC also lost, as goals from Kai Hancock (2) and Stevie Bennett saw them fall to a 3-2 defeat against Grimethorpe Sports. Goals from Connor Campbell, Richard Dey and Mitch Wiltshire were enough to help Silkstone United to a 3-2 win over Davy FC at Davy Sports Ground. AFC Dronfield are just two points off the top three, after they drew 1-1 against Brinsworth Whitehill at Gosforth Playing Fields. Dronfield take on in-form Caribbean in back-to-back games. Goals from Richard Williams and John Rougvie gave Millmoor Juniors Reserves a 2-1 win against Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves at the MDC Sports Stadium. The win is Millmoor’s first of the season, but is sadly not enough to lift them from the foot-of-the-table. Division Two North Dodworth Miners Welfare gave up the chance to cut Stocksbridge Park Steels Development Squad’s lead at the top of the Division Two North to just three points, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Euroglaze FC. Stocksbridge lead the way by five points, but the top two face each other at Dodworth Miners Welfare next weekend. South Kirkby Colliery Reserves extended their unbeaten run to four matches, with a 5-2 home win over Wombwell Main Development Squad. Division Two South Third place New Bohemians drew 2-2 at home with league leaders Kiveton Park. Whilst at Clowne College, second placed Swinton Athletic Reserves beat Renishaw Rangers 3-0 to cut Kiveton’s lead at the top to four points, however Kiveton do have a game in hand. Caribbean Sports Reserves climbed into fourth place, with a 5-2 win over bottom side Maltby Main Reserves at Firvale School. Sheffield Bankers Reserves claimed their first win of 2017, as they beat Sheffield Lane Top at Hillsborough College. The win takes the Bankers out of the bottom two. Mid-table Sheffield Medics made it back-to-back away wins, with a 2-1 win over Millmoor Juniors Development Squad at Grange Park.

WILDER’S DONS VERDICT 2016/17 Chris Wilder felt the Blades were full value for Saturday’s 4-0 success over AFC Wimbledon at Bramall Lane. Billy Sharp’s 19th of the season got the ball rolling inside two minutes, before James Hanson got the second on his debut. Second-half strikes from John Fleck and Caolan Lavery put the icing on the cake for United, who won for
the first time in four matches and moved back to the League One summit in the process. Wilder remarked: “We had to work hard to win the game, but once we got into the game the confidence came flowing back. “We got an early goal, that settled everyone down and we went on to win comfortably and keep a clean which pleased me
more than the four goals. “We’ve made mistakes previously that have been costly, but we concentrated excellently and Jake Wright was outstanding in marshalling the defence.” The Blades boss added: “Jake is an organiser, a leader and he has epitomised what I want and we need at this club moving forward.
“We aren’t going to achieve anything with 11 or 14 players, we’re in good shape, we’ve got competition for places and I’ve had to make a tough decision for one or two lads not to even make the bench. “But everyone is part of the squad, everyone’s time will come and nobody’s own success will come before that of the team.”
FOUR DIFFERENT SCORERS SEE OFF DONS Four different scorers paved the way to a comfortable home victory for the Blades. Skipper Billy Sharp kicked off the goal glut with his 19th of the season and debutant James Hanson added the second. After the break John Fleck added the third and substitute Caolan Lavery completed the scoring in injury-time. Wilder made two changes from the last fixture, bringing in striker Hanson for his debut, whilst the experienced Wright was recalled at the back. O’Shea and Carruthers were named amongst the substitutes. Hanson’s first header indirectly paved the way to United
opening the scoring inside two minutes. It put Wimbledon under pressure down their left and forced Barcham to foul Freeman. From Fleck’s subsequent free-kick, SHARP nipped in and scored at the second attempt after Shea’s initial save. A lull after the goal saw United on top without causing too many problems for the visitors, for whom Elliott was busy in attack. Wimbledon’s first chance, on 16 minutes, saw Reeves shoot at Moore from distance and the Blades hit back with Duffy turning inside Bulman but Shea saved comfortably. A series of one twos involving Freeman, Coutts, Hanson
and Duffy was eye-catching but a subsequent cross was cleared and another long-range Wimbledon effort saw Bulman fail to find the target. As half-time approached, Freeman and Hanson then put the visitors under pressure. The wingback delivered a deflected cross from which the big striker headed onto the roof of the net but soon after it was 2-0. On 37 minutes, Duffy ran at the Wimbledon defence before laying off to Freeman and his cutback saw HANSON smash home, despite the efforts of a defender on the line. There was another Blades chance before the interval following
Kelly’s foul on Freeman. A rehearsed routine saw Duffy’s low delivery and Sharp’s effort blocked before the half-time whistle. Basham replaced Ebanks-Landell at the break and the early pressure came from the away side, although the chances fell to the Blades and Sharp! The skipper had three chances inside five minutes but twice he missed the target under pressure and his deft chip from Duffy’s cross was collected by goalkeeper Shea. The opportunities continued for United. From Fleck’s cross, Lafferty’s flicked header was wide and Duffy’s central freekick was just wide, although Shea was at
full stretch. Taylor’s flicked header was wide as Moore powered off his line in a rare Wimbledon attack but the Blades were soon back on the offensive and after Fleck had robbed Fuller, Duffy stung the palms of Shea on 67 minutes. As the second half progressed, the Blades continued to be in control. Fleck fired over after Basham overpowered Elliott and then Lavery replaced Sharp. The sub was soon involved. On 79 minutes, Lavery pressured Charles and Hanson laid off to FLECK, who showed great close control before shooting low past Shea at the Kop end. Carruthers was
introduced for his home debut late on and had plenty of touches as United continued to force Wimbledon back. Just before the referee’s watch turned round to 90 minutes a speculative shot from Taylor forced a save from Moore. Three minutes of added time was announced but the Blades were not finished. Fleck’s firm pass saw Carruthers lay into the path of LAVERY, who cut inside his marker before firing into corner of Shea’s net. It was the final notable action before the referee’s final whistle signalled that United had returned to the summit of League One.
HANSON IMPRESSES ON DEBUT WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
Chris Wilder has undoubtedly improved Sheffield United’s strength in depth in his time at the Lane. He has recruited well to sure up a
defence that leaked goals last season, injected creativity into the midfield and got the best out of his captain, Billy Sharp. However, he has so far failed
to find a partner for Sharp, until now. James Hanson’s debut against AFC Wimbledon proves that Wilder was right to recruit the striker, despite some concerns from fans. Hanson’s presence up front created havoc all afternoon for the Dons defenders, his headed knockdowns from Simon Moore kicks propelled the Blades up the pitch. Even if he wasn’t winning the header, the second ball fell to a United player in most instances. Nobody expected his first United goal to arrive as it did, a smart finish, driven
hard and low proves that the 29-yearold is not just a man for headers. His presence in the box helps deviate attention from other players, the Dons defenders failed to pick up Sharp for the first goal. For a relatively small fee, Wilder has added another fear factor to the United front line. League One defences will not want to worry about both Hanson and Sharp. Even if Hanson does not start up top with Sharp in some of the remaining fixtures, most clubs do not have an option like him from the bench.
Caolan Lavery, Matt Done, Leon Clarke and Marc McNulty, who only have eight goals between them,
will now be aware that the bar has been raised to take a spot next to United’s captain.

FULFILLING AN AMBITION Jordan Rhodes says it has been a long-held ambition of his to walk out at Hillsborough as a Wednesday player. On Friday night, the prolific Championship striker could well make this a reality. As the Owls host Birmingham under the lights and in front of the Sky cameras, Rhodes is excited to make his S6 bow. Explaining his desire to wear the Owls badge in front of Wednesdayites
at Hillsborough he said: “I’ve wanted to play for Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough for a few years now. “Watching the odd game, obviously coming here when I was with Huddersfield, Blackburn and Middlesbrough, as a player you just want to play in front of that kind of support. “I saw them first hand at the play-off final which was just incredible and to have that kind of passion on a regular
basis is one of the reasons I wanted to come here. “Coming to Hillsborough and watching my dad’s team, you can feel the history and the atmosphere all around the place. “It’s a club of great tradition and it will be a great feeling to walk out there for the first time as a Wednesday player.” Rhodes made a telling contribution in his debut last week at Wigan as the forward claimed an
Ahead of his potential home debut on Friday evening, Morgan Fox says he is looking forward to sampling the home support as a Wednesday player for the first time. Having been a visitor during his time with Charlton, the left back knows not to underestimate the influence of the fans. And as the Owls look to build on victory at Wigan last week, Fox says they will need the supporters to be at their highest levels as well as the players. He said: “I’ve been here in the past and I know
how important the fans are here. “It can be a very intimidating place to come and that’s the kind of environment we need. “I was here for the game against Huddersfield and they were amazing on that day, right behind the team, giving them a lift when they needed it and helping get the first goal. “The players thrive off that positive environment and with ten home games to go, we’ll need it every step of the way.” For the second week running, the Owls will do battle in the Championship under the
lights and in front of the Sky cameras on a Friday night. “We want to get that win and then watch the results come in over the weekend,” Fox continued. “We want to get the job done and then that puts pressure on the other

assist for Ross Wallace’s winning goal and he continued: “It’s very exciting, I want to add to the squad and work towards the collective aim and that is to get out of this league. “I want to work even harder than I have done before to help get this club where it needs to be. I’m hungry to make up for lost time and want to make an impact at this club.”
INFLUENCE OF THE FANS sides and that’s what we’re out to achieve. “I missed out as a precaution at Wigan but I’m back in training today. It was good to get my first game under the belt at Bristol, I thought it went well, I had a lot of joy down that side and I’m ready to go again.”
