COUNCIL PURCHASES FORMER TESCO SITE IN KEY REGENERATION DEAL Work on a key site in the heart of Rotherham town centre could start as early as next year after it was bought by Rotherham Council this week. The Council moved one step closer to its plans to regenerate Forge Island by buying the land from Tesco to prepare it for development. The two parties exchanged contracts

this week. The land will play a major part of the town centre masterplan which is currently being drawn up by global urban design company WYG Group. Rotherham Council’s Strategic Director of Regeneration and Investment Damien Wilson said the Council is now well-placed to work

with developers and investors to maximise the opportunities of the unique town centre site. He said: ‘By taking control of this important site, we now have the ability to drive-forward positive change. Forge Island is a prime location sitting between the River Don and the South Yorkshire

Navigation Canal, its unique position makes it attractive to investors and visitors alike. Forge Island is central to restoring the town’s night time economy and we’re looking forward to seeing it become a vibrant leisure quarter.’ Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy Cllr Denise Lelliott said

Project Director Andrew Clarke said: ‘The acquisition of the Forge Island site by Rotherham Council is good news indeed. This site forms a vital part in the investment masterplan currently nearing completion for the town centre. Forge Island has, for a number of years, been a visible signpost of potential yet to be realised and the time to realise the potential of this key site is now one step closer. The publication of the draft investment masterplan in the

coming months will set-out proposals for this key site and how development will be delivered’ Detailed development proposals for the site are being prepared alongside the town centre masterplan. Demolition of the former Tesco building will take place in the coming months to enhance the site’s attractiveness to future developers. Temporary additional car parking will be provided at the site whilst plans are being developed.

SHEFFIELD KEEPS PURPLE FLAG STATUS FOR ANOTHER YEAR Sheffield has once again been recognized on a national level for providing an “entertaining, safe and enjoyable night out.” Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID) Police Sergeant Matthew Burdett and Richard Eyre, of Sheffield City Council, have been presented with the formal accreditation, which means the flag will keep flying over Sheffield’s Peace Gardens for another year. Purple Flag is a town and city centre award – similar to the Blue Flag award

to be both day and night and this has resulted in the prestigious status yet again. Thanks to everyone who helped us keep the flag flying.” Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s great to see Sheffield receiving this

award, and our night-time entertainment offer being recognised on a national level. “With our varied selection of bars and restaurants, as well as a thriving theatre district and huge array of cultural attractions, we in Sheffield really are leading the way when it comes to providing an eclectic mix of places to eat, drink, relax and have fun. “I hope that Sheffield city centre will continue to go from strength to strength, with the imminent opening of the new Light leisure and entertainment

complex and the creation of the New Retail Quarter.” The Purple Flag programme is managed by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) which works alongside a partnership of key stakeholder groups backed by Government, police and businesses, as well as the UK sponsors Diageo Great Britain. In Sheffield the partners involved in the work include Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID), South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield City Centre Residents Action Group, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, U-Night and Sheffield City Centre Retailers Group.

GREEN DAY RETURN WITH SPECIAL NEWLY ADDED SHEFFIELD TOUR DATE Green Day are set to return to the UK in the summer to headline two huge outdoor shows at London’s Hyde Park as well as Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park plus a newly added date at Sheffield Arena on Monday 3rd July! Tickets for the Sheffield date are priced £72.80, £61.60 & £44.24 (including booking fee) and go on general sale at 9am on Friday 17th February in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk. After topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with their current album ‘Revolution Radio’, Green Day’s new single ‘Still Breathing’ is out now. Produced by Green Day and recorded in Oakland, ‘Still Breathing’ matches its raucous energy with reflective lyrics which seek hope in challenging

times. As frontman Billie Joe Armstrong explained to Rolling Stone: “That was a very heavy song. Sometimes I run away from being too heavy. But sometimes it just comes out that way.” ‘Still Breathing’ is taken from the ‘Revolution Radio’ album which is a potent twelve-track blitz of angst-ridden anthems that unites Green Day’s fully formed stylistic approach with lyrical themes that address the complexities and uncertainties of modern day existence. Musically, the album is raw, visceral, and fearless - solidifying the band’s reign as one of the leading voices in rock music.

Tickets for the Sheffield show go on general sale from 9am on Friday February 17th in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk

I want to be a millionaire just like my dad!! “Wow, your dad’s a millionaire?” “No, but he always wanted to be.” My wife said she was leaving me because of my obsession with The Monkees, I thought she was joking. And then I saw her face... I told my mum I’d opened a theatre. She said, ‘Are you having me on?’ I said, ‘I’ll give you an audition but I’m not promising anything.’ Just got 15 Valentines cards! It’s left me completely breathless. That security guard at Clinton Cards gave quite a chase. Knock knock. “Who’s there?” “Dejav.” “Dejav who?” Knock knock. British Cycling’s women-only cycling programme, HSBC UK Breeze, is on the hunt for female cyclists to inspire other women to get on their bikes in Sheffield. If you love cycling recreationally and are passionate about supporting others in your local community, there’s no better time to become a Breeze Champion. Breeze is the biggest programme ever to get more women riding bikes for fun. Led by women for women, Breeze relies on a group of volunteer ride leaders, known as Breeze Champions, to support other women on free, guided bike rides across the UK. Breeze empowers women to change the face of cycling for good and leave a lasting legacy in their area. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s an exciting time for cycling here in Sheffield, with the Outdoor City Weekender being held next month and, of course, the Tour de Yorkshire race in April set to finish at Fox Valley. “It’s therefore also a perfect time for keen female cyclists to think about encouraging other women to pull on their helmets and discover the joys of getting out and about on two wheels. “This free course is open to all women who are confident on a bike, so I’d encourage anyone interested to give it a try and pass on their love of cycling to others.” Becki Morris, Women’s Network Project Manager at British Cycling, said: “Our volunteer Champions are at the heart of Breeze. Their passion and commitment to encourage and support women to get into cycling is truly inspiring. “It is in large part down to their efforts that the programme is as successful as it is. We never cease to be amazed by them.” With over 2,000 Breeze Champions trained across the UK to date, Breeze has built a growing network of inspiring women. To join them, there’s no need to be a cycling expert, you just need to be confident on a bike and have the enthusiasm to motivate others.

NEW CIRCLES FOR CARERS SCHEME YOUNG CARERS Are you aged 50 plus? Do you care for someone with a learning disability? Sheffield Mencap & Gateway are launching an exciting one-year pilot as part of ‘Age Better in Sheffield’, to try and reduce social isolation and loneliness for family carers aged 50 plus. Many people who have been caring for a long time have told us they can feel isolated in their role as a carer. They may have less opportunity to do what they want, when they want. We would like to support carers to become less isolated and identify creative ways to reduce their isolation. This project is for anyone who is aged 50+ and caring for someone with a Learning Disability (the person doesn’t have to be living at home with you). The aim of this project is to support carers of adults with a learning disability to find effective ways to become less isolated. One of these ways is through ‘Circles of Support’; bringing together a group of people with the common purpose of supporting the carer to feel empowered to think about themselves and identify

creative ways to reduce their isolation. The project will try to: Come out and have a chat with you about the project to see if it is something that is useful to you Help you explore whether there are things that interest you Should you wish, we will try to support you to make connections with other people that share similar interests to you Identify and overcome the barriers that might prevent you from doing things for yourself. If we do not know the answer to something or feel that there is someone better equipped to support you then we will always do our best to point you in the right direction! If you want to get in touch with us, then you can give us a call or send us an email. We work as part of the Sharing Caring project at Sheffield Mencap & Gateway, so if you call and we are not around to speak to you, then please leave a message with one of our colleagues. Our telephone number is 0114 2758879

COUNCIL TAX HELP MAINTAINED A scheme to help people struggling to pay their council tax will be maintained by Sheffield City Council despite the authority facing huge budget pressures. The council has announced plans to carry on offering a discount of up to 77 per cent for working age people on low incomes and up to 100 per cent for pensioners who qualify for its Council Tax Support Scheme. Sheffield City Council asks people to contact them if they are struggling to pay their council tax. Councillor Ben Curran

said: “We have a duty to collect council tax and will use the powers available to us to enforce non-payment. But we ask people to contact us as soon as possible if they’re struggling to pay. We will give advice and help them as much as we can, and it’s always better to get in touch sooner rather than later.” Visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/benefits for more information about Sheffield’s Council Tax Support Scheme.

Thursday 23rd Feb Sheffield Town Hall, Pinstone Street Sheffield - 13:15 This important meeting, which is open to all Sheffield 50+ members, is to discuss the future of the organisation. Every member should have received full details of the proposals by post.

Do you know a young carer who is isolated and in need of a break? Is lack of money stopping them from getting much-needed respite? If so, the Young Carers Activity Fund could help. Sheffield Young Carers administer the Young Carers Activity Fund on behalf of Sheffield City Council to give young carers aged under 18 up to £300 to fund a break from their caring role. This could include things like music lessons, spa days, a gym membership or activity equipment for home like a trampoline, a magazine or film subscription, or a computer. The next closing date for applications is Thursday 23rd February 2017. Visit www.sheffieldyoungcarers. org.uk/young-carers-activity-fund.

CRIMESTOPPERS With rising hate crime in our streets, it’s more important than ever to feel confident that we can report what is happening and still stay safe. Crimestoppers receives anonymous calls from citizens worried about reporting a crime directly to the police. This helps keep communities and streets safer and protects the identities of people who might not otherwise speak out. Crimestoppers is inviting you to fill out a simple survey. The information you share will help keep your streets and communities safe. Add your voice to the survey: https://crimestoppers-uk.org/getinvolved/crimestoppers-survey-yourviews-matter

NEW £1.2M TEAMSPORT INDOOR GO-KARTING TRACK NOW OPEN IN SHEFFIELD TeamSport Karting, the UK’s leading company for indoor go-karting, has now opened its new £1.2 million track in Sheffield. The track, situated on Shepcote Lane, just two miles from Meadowhall, is the first ever go-karting track in the UK to have four levels, making it perfect for ultimate thrill seekers. It opened its doors on Saturday 11th February and is TeamSport’s 20th venue in the UK. Racegoers can look forward to a massive international circuit racing over four levels of nail biting bends, exhilarating long straights and jaw dropping ramps for up to 20 karters to race around at any one time. Facilities available at the track include meeting facilities, private party rooms and ‘Fuel’ - the track’s fully-licenced snack bar - serving up a range of rustic pizzas, baguettes and refreshing drinks, perfect for refuelling after a rapid few laps around the track. TeamSport is also bringing new opportunities for the local community, as the track is hiring for up to 40 full and part-time jobs.

Dom Gaynor, Managing Director of TeamSport Karting, said: “We’re very excited to have launched our first four level circuit at the Sheffield track in a prime location close to Meadowhall. Sheffield is a thriving place and it is fantastically exciting for us to open our 20th track & such a great facility in the City.” “The track is the perfect place for an action-packed family day out that offers a safe, unique and great value-for-money go-karting experience. “Whether you’re heading down to finally put a stop to your friend’s false claims of being the best driver, or making the most of our meeting facilities by bringing your staff for an action-packed corporate go-karting event, the Sheffield track will suit everyone’s needs. “We’re hoping for more people to start up indoor go-karting as a hobby, which we are fully supporting by running offers such as half price Wednesdays and discounts for students and forces.” Find out more at www.team-sport.co.uk/gokarting-sheffield

WIN TICKETS FOR THE BIGGEST EVER MOSBOROUGH MUSIC FESTIVAL Charity based Mosborough Music Festival enters its 7th year this summer, being held on Friday the 2nd and Saturday the 3rd of June at Don Valley Bowl. On the back of a sold out and highly successful 2015 and 2016 this popular and very affordable Sheffield festival has grown year on year, and with the old site at Mosborough now under development the festival has had to move on. After exhausting all possibilities to keep the festival local, festival organiser Steve Cowens said “As a local lad I’m proud of what we have done in Mosborough and brought so many household names in music to the village but I suppose all good things come to an end. We had two offers regarding moving the festival site but one was in Rotherham and the other in North East Derbyshire. I’m a proud Sheffield lad and I really wanted to keep the festival in Sheffield, plus I’d still be dealing with the local authorities who I have to say have been brilliant in their support and advise. So we decided that Don Valley Bowl was to be our new home, it has great transport links, it’s a great venue and it’s also two minutes from the M1 and surrounded by good hotels, it’s perfect really. We will however

be keeping Mosborough as a name, we are renowned now for our great line ups, good value, family friendly atmosphere and our charity work, so losing Mosborough’s name plus having to move would have seen 6 years hard work come to nothing and it would be like starting all over again, keeping Mosborough’s name is no big deal, Don Valleys only 5 miles from Mosborough and there’s Halifax banks in Sheffield town centre!”. Three stages will see 26 bands play continuous music throughout the weekend. This year’s headliners are multiaward winning; The Lightning Seeds. Joining them in a top quality line up are fellow Brit-pop legends Cast and Bruce Foxton’s From The Jam who see Mosborough’s stages have three top headliners for the first time. Also on the bill are two fantastic South of England based bands, The Dualers will belt out their infectious SKA/Reggae set and Essex based Missing Andy are no stranger to the festival as they complete a hat-trick of appearances. John Reilly also brings his fantastic band Boy On A Dolphin along. Tribute bands Antartic Monkeys and Happy Mondaze are sure to get people singing and dancing.

Midlands based outfit Marquis Drive have been with us since day one and do a covers indie set that always goes down a storm. Popular local SKA band Jungle Lion are also on the bill. As usual Mosborough doesn’t forget Sheffield’s best established and up-coming bands, The SSS, Sundance, The Velcro Teddy Bears, The Wired, Spears, Sweet Little Machine, Milane and hotly tipped for the top Oddity Road make up the local bands with Doncaster’s brilliant Ginger Tom, Leeds fantastic five piece electro Indie band Apollo Junction. Birmingham’s The Assist and Leeds SKA band Benson making up our best line up to date. Mosborough really has a top quality line up. Friday evening see’s us go into partnership with Sheffield’s own music legends Milburn who along with Reverend & The Makers kick off the festival with support from Manchester’s post punk band Cabbage. Ticket info: Saturday: Under 10’s are free with a paying adult, 11-15 year olds are £5. Adult (16 and over) are £20 in advance or £25 pay on the day (note this is only if any tickets remain).

Friday evening: Over 14’s only. Tickets are £23, available through see-tickets. Online tickets can be purchased from www.mosboroughmusicfestival.co.uk, The Leadmill and Ticket-web. Collect tickets from The Leadmill, Whitehornes (Woodseats and Ecclesall Road), Haybrook at Crystal Peaks, Mosborough off licence and Birley Moor news. Easy access from Halfway tram stop in Sheffield and Sheffield’s train station. This year’s chosen charity is Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

READER COMPETITION The lovely people at Mosborough Music Festival have kindly given us six tickets to give away to lucky readers. To be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets for this amazing event just answer the simple question below and send your entry with your name and a daytime contact number to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk or via post to Mercury Newspaper, 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before Friday10th March. The Lightning Seeds famously sung about what when they teamed up with Baddiel & Skinner for their Euro 96 Anthem? A) 3 Lions B) 3 Blades C) 3 Owls Winners drawn at random.

STAGE SET FOR EXCITING COASTIVAL WEEKEND Scarborough will burst into life on 18th and 19th February when more than 100 events are held as part of the popular annual Coastival arts festival. A huge bid to recreate Scarborough in 3D in the computer game Minecraft will be one of the star attractions over the weekend. ‘Coastival - The Unexpected' will feature 110 events, the majority of them free, across 32 venues, including unusual locations like the railway station and Scarborough's disused prison building. Coastival director Wendy Holroyd said: "The stage is set for Coastival 2017 and we are really looking forward to getting under way. "This year's theme is the unexpected and we have a full weekend packed with some of the best creative talent from our local area and from the rest of the UK and abroad, in unusual locations, right here in Scarborough. "Obviously the Minecraft project is something totally new and unique that we have never attempted before but aside from that we have music, performances, visual arts and activities for youngsters in a wide variety of locations across the whole festival. It promises to be a really diverse, exciting weekend." Four new commissions will take centre

stage. One is a bid to recreate Scarborough in 3D in the game Minecraft. This has been a community effort including schools, colleges, community groups and individuals, painstakingly creating Scarborough in Minecraft and will culminate in a huge Minecraft event over the Coastival weekend at the Spa. The other commissions are "Market Hall Myriad of Music and Madness", a dynamic music and comedy night at Scarborough Market Hall and Vaults; ‘See (Glass)' a lit sculpture at the Spa, created out of glass fragments collected from local beaches and ‘Sunny spells with a chance of snow', a novel recreation of a seaside experience condensed into a tiny caravan, also at the Spa. Other highlights are likely to include ‘Riders to the Sea', a live performance of Vaughn Williams' one-act opera at Westborough Methodist Church on the Saturday at 7.30pm and the Sunday at 2.30pm. ‘Head Above Water' features film, photography, sculpture, drawing and poetry by various artists on show at Woodend, the Spa, the Stephen Joseph Theatre and Crescent Arts, throughout the weekend. ‘Platform 3' on Saturday 18th February, from 11.30am to 4pm at Scarborough railway station, will feature music, poetry and performance. Then at the Old Parcels' Office on Sunday

afternoon, from 1pm to 4pm, ‘Tracks by the Tracks', features music from Lazlo, Connor and Nathen and Empire. ‘Bands Behind Bars' runs from 1pm to 4pm on the Saturday and will feature Frankie Dixon, Rhys Bloodjoy and Jesse Hutchinson performing at the former prison building on Dean Road. ‘Backseat Mafia' brings the freshest, upcoming alternative bands to the Spa Music Room from noon to midnight on the Saturday and noon to 5pm on the Sunday. ‘The Den Meets Stone Penguin' features a mix of live and DJ music at Farrer's Bar on the Saturday from noon to 2am and the Sunday from noon to 6pm. Highlight is likely to be Newcastle funk band King Bee, at 11.30pm on the Saturday. Other musical treats include Raven at the Crown Spa Hotel at 2.30pm on the Sunday and the Coastival Choir at a workshop at Scarborough Library and then performing at the Brunswick Centre at 2pm and 3pm on the Saturday. The festival also includes imaginative and surprising artwork in exhibitions by local and visiting artists, installations at various unusual locations and open studios at Woodend and other galleries. There's also a full programme of films. Rollercoastival 2017 will see special events for youngsters, including ‘Suitcase Circus' at the Scarborough Campus

of Coventry University offering youngsters over six the chance to learn circus skills with award-winning performer Pete White, on Saturday 18th February. There'll also be lots of activities at Scarborough Library, including ‘Exquisite Corpse', a surrealist drawing game and interactive and animated storytelling of the Stories of Roald Dahl. At the Spa there'll be opportunities for youngsters to write and perform a brand new song, follow The Pied Piper for a musical trail and create a picture box from their own happy memories. There will also be art drop-in sessions and storytelling, as well as Horrid History Walks from Sandside at 4pm each day. For full details of all the events, including ticket information please visit www. coastival.com or call 01723 384545.

I read recently that street was a step into another world. I are simply no fishing shops. Nowhere to loved it! I still remember a trawl net on the go for a pint of pinkies or squatts, nowhere wall, festooned with glass floats and plastic to go for advice, nowhere to go for a catch lobsters, (appropriate, as at best, we are least up with chums, and that is a travesty in my seventy miles from the nearest sea!) wooden opinion. When they have all gone, and only trays filled with the latest bullet weights, the big superstores remain, impersonal, with green spiral leads (remember those?) and online shelves either empty (despite the ‘in coffin sinkers. A polystyrene filled carousel stock, click now’ promise) or distant, then atop the counter, pricky with porcupine anglers will be faced with a dilemma of their quills, perch bobbers, and, if lucky, Ivan own making. Do you really want to risk Marks match floats, resplendent in their gloss ordering that £3000 pole, without seeing it, black finish, which battled for space with an and wait for it to arrive crushed by a postie ancient till, whose numbers rose in time with who couldn’t care less, then have to go the press of the corresponding key… through the ordeal of trying to claim back the It wasn’t just a place for tackle though, it money? And don’t saw him retired from the local cement works, forget, a pint of maggots? By post? No and he knew everything and everyone. I thanks… I’d rather support my local store… recall John showing me how to properly shot a driftbeater float, and tie the loop-to-loop knot to secure a pre-tied hooklink, and then Frampton Lane, Hubberts Bridge, Boston, Lincs PE20 3QU with a knowing wink, tell me exactly where Tel:01205 290328 to put my baited rig on local waterways; “as or 01205 290368 close to the lilies as you can get!” He was Fax:01205 290247 right too. I travel a bit further now, but it still retains that ‘proper’ shop feel and has a new breed of regulars, leaning against the sales desk. I’m one of them now, a regular, and I always try to buy any tackle from there to show my support, and contribute in some small way to keeping the traditional tackle shop open. I think it’s worth it. It’s still the best place to find out any local gossip, catch up with the area EA bailiff to find out what nefarious goings on have occurred, get wind of a new hotspot, and take a look at the latest gadgets and gismos from the trade; it’s what a tackle shop should be… But, things are changing. Smaller shops are leaving the high street at a frightening rate, beset by competition from the big boys, with massive spending power, who can demand a much lower price from suppliers, and even decide who can trade on ‘their’ turf. GOOD POINT BUT STILL DISAPPOINTED LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

Interim Manager Paul Warne gave his thoughts on last weekend’s 1-1 draw between the Millers and Blackburn Rovers at the AESSEAL New York Stadium on a bitterly cold afternoon. “Obviously, being one-nil up I was disappointed to concede from a corner late on because I thought we defended set-pieces reasonably well today,” said Warne. “We improved as the game went on because I thought we were poor in the first half. “We were an attacking threat in the second half and the lads took on the information we gave them at half time. We changed it and tried to give them a bit of confidence. Overall, I’m disappointed because it could have been better. But, to take a point after a few defeats is good.” After a goalless first half, Jon Taylor’s deflected effort separated the sides two minutes into the second period, but the visitors hit back with six minutes left through a Stephen Kelly own goal. “The league doesn’t lie,” continued Warne. “We’re at the bottom and we concede goals. We’re desperate to keep clean sheets so scoring one goal isn’t enough. When we scored I didn’t go crazy on the sideline because I was still in a bad mood from half time, to

be honest. I knew that we needed another one (goal) to be a bit more comfortable. I don’t know how many corners we had in the second half. “I thought we played well in the second half to justify a win. Unfortunately for us they scored from a corner late on and we share the points. “I’ve looked at it (Blackburn equaliser) and I don’t think it’s a foul. The lads feel it was a foul but I’m not going to stand here and lie. I think we should have cleared it and we didn’t, so we get punished for that.” With the visit of Huddersfield Town just three days away, Warne is doing everything in his power to keep spirits up in order to claim as many points possible. “It’s difficult because we need to win our home games” he continued. “I set the team up to try and win today and I changed the system after 20 minutes to go more aggressive and more attacking. “It is a difficult challenge but I try and do it with a smile on my face. I’ll pick the lads up again tomorrow and dust them down ready for another home game on Tuesday. If we can pick up points and teams above us don’t, it’s a lot of ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ but

I have to produce a team to put on a performance and keep the fans pleased. They’ll go home today reasonably happy with the performance in the second half. “We can pick up points. It’s difficult but the lads have got to believe. Hopefully, we’ll get a better result on Tuesday night.”

BEN ADAPTING TO LIFE UP NORTH

then things would look a whole lot different and we need to stay positive.” “The manager is trying to get everyone going again after recent results but all the players are looking to stay positive and there is little point dwelling too much on past results,” Purrington added.

New Rotherham United signing Ben Purrington says he has adapted quickly to life in South Yorkshire with the help of his new teammates, following his switch from Plymouth Argyle. The 20-year-old left back traded life on the south coast for the AESSEAL New York Stadium in the January transfer window, joining the Millers for an undisclosed fee, but says the radical lifestyle change, which also saw a jump from League Two to the Championship, has not phased him. “Obviously coming from Plymouth it’s a long way from home but the lads are really nice and they have helped me settle in well,” Purrington remarked.

“In some ways, I’m still getting to know them and remember everyone’s name. It is quite hard coming into a new environment and know 20 faces and names but it’s going really well so far. “My main aim is to try and help the team win games. It’s not just about myself. I want to contribute to the team and make it stronger. I want to get up and down the pitch, but first and foremost defend and help the team not concede as many goals.” Purrington has starred at left back in both games since his arrival, making his debut in front of the home supporters against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday and admits he has already noticed the quality of the second tier, despite being in the infancy of his Millers’ career. “Technically, the Championship is a lot higher standard but you can see the quality in our team,” Purrington stressed. “It will be difficult for us [to stay up] but stranger things have happened. If you get one or two wins

Darren Ferguson felt his players went toe to toe with a battling Newport County AFC side on Friday night. Rovers had to settle for a draw after a goalless 90 minutes at Rodney Parade, but the Rovers boss was clear that he viewed it as a point gained against a side fighting for their League survival. Ferguson said: “I thought my players were excellent, and did what I asked of them to a man. We knew it

would be a real fight, a real battle. “We were dominant at times in the second-half, it is just difficult to create chances on a pitch like that. We just had to hope to capitalise on a mistake, which didn’t come. “We went toe to toe with them, won second balls and headers. I’m delighted with my players. I don’t think anyone can ask more with the effort and application they put in.”

BUTLER IMPRESSED BY WORK-RATE

and extending the unbeaten run then eventually everything will fall in to place,” he added. “There’s a belief that, as long as we prepare right every week, we won’t lose games. It’s enjoyable. “It’s a big week coming up and we’re relishing the challenge, the games against Carlisle and Luton will be different in their own way but we’ll go in to try and win both.”

The point extended Rovers’ unbeaten run to 10 games, and Ferguson’s men will look to extend that to 11 when they head to Carlisle United on Tuesday evening. The manager added: “It is important to keep picking up points. We want to win every game we can, but it isn’t always possible. “We’ve got a big week now, Tuesday is a big game at Brunton Park. We’ll be fully prepared. We’ll be in on Sunday for a recovery day and Monday will be preparation for Carlisle. “Carlisle are a good team. It’ll be a different type of game. Regardless of how you want to play or what ability you think you have got, you’ve got to show a real resilience – that whatever they throw at you, you’ll throw it right back at them. We did that.”

FERGUSON HAPPY WITH FIGHT

Andy Butler praised the effort and determination shown by Rovers in the goalless draw at Newport County AFC. Butler was handed the captain’s armband at Rodney Parade in the absence of usual skipper James Coppinger, who was rested by manager Darren Ferguson. The pitch in south Wales had come under some scrutiny in the build up to the game, but the Rovers defender believes they dealt with the task well. “All in all it’s a pleasing point, we knew it was going to be a tough challenge and we stepped up to that,” he said. “I’ve played on worse pitches when I was younger but we knew what it was going to be like, they’re fighting for their lives to avoid relegation so fair play to them for sticking to their game plan. “We’re a point closer to where we need to be as a football club; other teams towards the top end of the table have come here and lost this season.” The draw with the Exiles meant that Rovers made it 10 league games unbeaten, a feat they had not achieved since 2007, and Butler says confidence is high within the group. “You can see that everyone’s willing to fight for the cause. We just need to keep on picking up points

The recent spell of wintry weather wreaked havoc on the County Senior League fixture list on Saturday, with two-thirds of the scheduled games postponed. WILDER HAPPY AS BLADES GO FIVE CLEAR Chris Wilder was understandably delighted after seeing Billy Sharp’s winning goal at Peterborough send the Blades five points clear at the top of EFL League One. In an entertaining clash at the ABAX Stadium, United look like having to settle for a share of the spoils despite a dominant second-half showing, until the skipper popped up with his 20th of the

campaign with three minutes remaining. And speaking afterwards, Wilder acknowledged his side had overcome another hurdle in the pursuit of promotion back to the Championship. He remarked: “It was a good game, involving two teams having a right go at it. It had a bit of feistiness about it, tackles were flying in but both teams played in a good spirit. “Peterborough started

well and they are an expansive team with some excellent offensive players, but we grew into the game and in the second-half we went all out for the victory, leaving ourselves open at times. “It was end-to-end, we could have got caught, but we wanted the victory and I’m delighted we got it late on. “It was a big performance and a big result, first and

foremost for the supporters who made the trip, but also for everyone connected to the club.” The Blades boss added: “Peterborough had a hell of a lot to play for and we knew we’d have to defend well and we did. Neither goalkeeper was overworked despite our dominance as the game progressed, but what a time to win it. “It was a good goal, ending with Billy

BLADES UNVEIL PLANS FOR BOUNDARY CORNER Exciting plans to further develop the land surrounding United’s stadium have been unveiled... and it could see Blades fans living the dream! The Blades are seeking to develop the Cherry Street / Shoreham Street Corner and have submitted a planning application that will see the development Boundary Corner, (a nod towards the stadium’s footballing/cricketing heritage), a four storey largely residential building which will feature an impressive ground floor new Club retail outlet. The 21st century Blades Superstore, will replace and double the size of the current one at the South Stand. It will feature a fan zone. The existing Club shop could

be used as a conference or event facility. The site currently hosts some car parking for United. Planners have welcomed the principle of a development in the location, where a strong, contemporary architectural proposal has been designed whilst sensitively considering the nearby properties. The scheme - drawn-up by United’s retained architects WCEC features in long term business plans from the owners focussing on ever improving stadium facilities contributing robustly to the future business performance of the Club. Scarborough International Properties is project managing the development at Cherry Street / Shoreham Street Corner. “The corner site we

are developing could fulfil a dream for some of our supporters - a chance to live at the home of football! It will also enable the Club to expand the Superstore,” said United director Simon McCabe. Fellow director Scott McCabe said: “Significantly it is part of a route we are taking whereby we have identified several opportunities to further develop and improve the ground and the immediate surrounding area as we seek to build a broader commercial, leisure and entertainment offer, developing additional revenue streams to support the aim of supporting United’s return to the upper levels of the English game. “Further development

of the stadium area is a positive move to enhance income streams, ultimately supporting our plans for the key football side of the business,” added Scott. The proposals come in

firing home to que mad scenes with the fans, but that’s what we’re in the game for.

the wake of extensive modernisation undertaken in recent years including the installation of a state of the art Desso pitch giving the Club greater use of the ground for events and other activities during close seasons. “We are working on several exciting projects to bring new activities and events to Bramall Lane soon,” said Simon McCabe. WCEC’s Chief

“We were bold and brave in our approach and in the end got our rewards.”

Executive Ashley Turner said: “We are delighted to be working as architects for Sheffield United. Following on from now completed projects such as the Westfield Corner Stand and Copthorne Hotel, we will take great pride in further enhancing what is an already superb venue starting with the Cherry Street and Shoreham Street developments.”

BLADES PREPARE FOR TITLE CLASHES comes to an end. Scunthorpe arrive Wanderers. Positive first out of the two, results in both games in what should be would put the Blades close to a full house at the Lane on in a very strong position heading into Saturday. The Iron had a relatively quiet the last 12 games January window, of the season. The choosing to reinforce promotion picture their attack with will become very the loan signings clear once February of Ivan Toney and Craig Davies. Scunthorpe’s best business arguably is keeping hold of their two star players. The club rejected a bid reportedly worth £4million from the Chinese Super League for 10-goal striker, Kevin van Veen. Championship clubs were circling around key man, Josh Morris, as the window came to

WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH

The next two weeks will define the season for Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United. Bramall Lane hosts the two clubs sitting directly below the Blades, Scunthorpe United and Bolton

a close. Keeping hold of Morris was a major boost to Scunthorpe’s promotion ambitions. Although he might not admit it, Wilder must have been pleased to see Bolton Wanderers agree to the sale of Zach Clough to Nottingham Forest. Severe financial issues may have forced the club to sell their top goal scorer. Adam le Fondre signing on loan from Cardiff City will have eased fears from Bolton fans that the club was giving up on promotion. Sheffield United are yet to beat the their two nearest promotion rivals, a draw at

Scunthorpe and two defeats at Bolton is how affairs currently lie. Two wins and the road to promotion looks clear, two

negative results and the club could find themselves slipping into the play-off positions.

WE ARE IN A GOOD PLACE - CC Carlos Carvalhal was in good spirits following his side’s best win of the campaign so far. The head coach stated after the win at Wigan last week that the game was the ‘start of the rest of our season’ and the Owls duly beat Birmingham on Friday night to post their second successive win. The Blues were on the end of a 3-0 defeat as goals from Jordan

Rhodes, Sam Winnall and Adam Reach cemented Wednesday’s play-off berth. Carvalhal said: “We are in a good place. We have a good win, we are sixth in the table, we have another clean sheet – our 13th of the season – and we scored three goals. “We are higher in the table with more points, so I am happy. We started and finished this game very well. “Birmingham had some

good spells because this is normal. If a side from League One or League Two comes to Hillsborough, they will have chances – this is football. “But we defended very well, we attacked very well and so I am very happy.” Carvalhal was also pleased with the impact of new strike recruits Rhodes and Winnall, both of whom opened their S6 accounts.

And the head coach insisted that the best is yet to come. “They did very well, they showed good signals but they are only starting at Sheffield Wednesday. “So they will get better as individuals for us and I am happy with the options that we have. “If one striker drops out, another one comes in, it is important to have that kind of strength.”

eventually go in.” The Owls were under pressure at times during Friday’s game, with Birmingham hitting the woodwork and Winnall said the second goal was key in putting the game to bed. He added: “We knew what Birmingham posed coming here, they’re a side that try to play football and try to play through us, and they had a spell in the game where they were a little bit on top. “But we weathered that storm and we were clinical in the last ten

minutes in scoring a second and a third goal so it was a huge three huge points. “We had quite a big transfer window in January with some new players coming in, including myself, and it was obviously going to take a little while to adapt. “Wigan was the first game with the squad that we have for the rest of the season and it was a hard fought win in the end, and we did the same on Friday. “It’s six points from the last two games and it’s put us in a good position in the league we just need to kick on from that.”

AIMING HIGH Owls new-boy Sam Winnall broke his scoring duck for Wednesday in the 3-0 win against Birmingham at Hillsborough on Friday evening, and speaking exclusively to swfc. co.uk, the striker said he was delighted to be off the mark. Winnall scored either side of goals from fellow new signing Jordan Rhodes and substitute Adam Reach and the exBarnsley man thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. He said: “It was a great feeling to do it in front

of the home crowd at such a pivotal time in the game, it was really special. “It was my first goal for the club, it felt as if it was coming all game and I’m really pleased to be off the mark, especially with it being an important win for the club. “If I could have picked it I would have picked it exactly like that, in front of the Kop in a match where we kind of needed a goal to kill the game off. “I knew if I kept putting myself in positions to score, one would
