SHEFFIELD’S FIRST BLITZ LEGACY UNVEILED A seven year campaign has finally come to fruition with the opening of the city’s first permanent Sheffield Blitz exhibition. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox, carried out the unveiling ceremony with local author Neil Anderson and Matthew Wakefield - head of the city’s National Emergency Services Museum which is new home of the exhibition. of the city forever and flattened much of the city centre. The exhibition contains scores of rare and original Blitz-related objects and photos, Second World War emergency vehicles, oral history recordings from survivors, film footage as well as the fire brigade’s original map of bomb sites acorss the city. ‘Sheffield’s Date With Hitler’ author Neil Anderson started campaigning seven years ago for their to be more in
Sheffield to commemorate the attacks. In November 2015, Neil Anderson - together with project manager Richard Godley and heritage interpreter Bill Bevan - successfully secured £81,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Thanks to National Lottery players, the permanent Sheffield Blitz exhibition is set to be the first lasting legacy of the project. Neil Anderson said: “It is truly humbling to help
unveil the exhibition after so many years of hard work and perseverance.” A Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trail will form the centre-piece of the two-and-a-half year Heritage Lottery Funded project with up to 12 sites around the city centre earmarked for the installation of high quality, permanent memorial plaques. The Sheffield Blitz exhibition will be accessible during the normal opening hours of the National Emergency Services Museum. There is an admission charge. The Sheffield Blitz 75th project has received donations from Peter Stringfellow, Horrible Histories’ creator Terry Deary, The Moor, Atkinsons and scores of individuals.

Sheffield based customers are savvier than ever - shunning supermarket queues and ‘superficial deals’ in favour of online shopping and ‘everyday discounts’ - according to the country’s leading online retailer of discount food and drink. Approvedfood.co.uk ships orders all over the UK from their Sheffield warehouse just off the Parkway; and a recent report has outlined a boom in business from local customers thanks to a better understanding of best-before-dates and consumers becoming increasingly cost-conscious. According to the company, switched on shoppers in the city saved a staggering £74,393.21 against the recommended retail price of the contents of their digital trollies in 2016 alone – coming in just short of their Leeds based neighbours, who managed to bank a whopping £78,333.02. Approvedfood.co.uk was established by former market trader Dan Cluderay in 2008, specialising in short-dated and residual stock food and drinks. It now has more than 54k customers across the UK who saved in excess of £9.5million over the past 12 months. Dan said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see that more and more people right here on our doorstep are signing up at Approvedfood.co.uk. That’s more families that are saving money on their weekly shops, and less food that is going to waste because of a misplaced label or a totally meaningless yet looming best-before-date. “The trend suggests that people are fed up of chasing deals at supermarkets and are looking to benefit from the everyday discounts that they can access at their own convenience regardless of time or day!” Whilst Dan and his team welcomed the surge in savvy shoppers in the region embracing the discount bandwagon, they were also ‘pleasantly surprised’ to see so many postcodes appear on the firm’s annual sales breakdown. Dan went on to further add: “When we ran the figures for the end of the year we were delighted to see so many Sheffield postcodes show up on our database. From S1 to S11, our customer base goes to show that people from all walks of life are looking to save the pennies in this day and age; and if you can do it by keeping the cost of everyday items like laundry detergent and breakfast cereal down, why wouldn’t you!”
In 2016, Sheffield based customers spent a total of £88,814.90 with Approvedfood.co.uk, resulting in a £74k saving on the RRP. 1,345 orders were shipped to Sheffield postcodes, and a further 1,034 orders were collected from the company’s warehouse based just off Sheffield’s Parkway. The sites most popular discounted goods included; crisps, chocolate, coffee and cereal, whereas; protein and nutrition along with free-from products became increasingly popular additions to shoppers’ baskets throughout the same period.

FITZALAN SQUARE TO BE REVAMPED YOUR LOCAL PRIORITIES The Sheffield Knowledge Gateway scheme will inject over £5.6 million into the run-down Fitzalan Square area of the time, and help restore it to its former glory as a city-centre showpiece. Now businesses in Fitzalan Square, and the surrounding areas, are to be quizzed on how they can be further improved as plans move forward to make it an integral part of Sheffield city life once more. Following the long-awaited renovation of the former head post office as Sheffield Hallam University’s Sheffield Institute of Arts (SIA), Sheffield City Council is
planning to upgrade the route from the Edwardian-era square along Pond Street to Paternoster Row and Brown Street, the focus of the Cultural Industries Quarter as well as improving connections to the city centre and station. There will be public and trader consultations over the next few weeks. Exhibitions featuring the proposals will be held at the Site Gallery cafe, Paternoster Row, from Tuesday 21 to Saturday 25 February 2017, (10am - 6pm weekdays; Saturday, 10am – 1pm.)

THE STATE OF SHEFFIELD 50+ EGM SHEFFIELD 2017 The State of Sheffield 2017 report is launched today, exploring the real picture of life in the city. The report looks at how Sheffield is changing over time, and how we compare to other major cities in the UK. Some key findings of this year’s report include high levels of exercise and physical activity in the city, high levels of volunteering of Sheffield residents within their communities, and the impressive progress made by Sheffield’s children at secondary level when compared to other cities. The report also shows how Sheffield is doing as a city to grow older in. Did you know that nearly one third of the population of Sheffield are over 50? The report highlights the enormous contribution that older people make to the life of the city in terms of paid employment, volunteering and family or caring responsibilities. The report identifies opportunities where Sheffield is already thriving or making progress that the city can build on in 2017, and sets out recommendations to help stakeholders across the city achieve this. The State of Sheffield 2017 Report is available to download at www. sheffieldfirst.com/key-documents/stateof-sheffield.html.

This important meeting, which is open to all Sheffield 50+ members, is to discuss the future of the organisation. As you know, the charity is hoping to merge with Age UK Sheffield during the spring of 2017. Our proposal is for Sheffield 50+ to become part of Age UK Sheffield; Sheffield 50+ company/charity would be wound up, relinquishing its company and charitable status. Every member should have received full details of the proposals by post.

The dos and don’ts of planning your ultimate proposal A study commissioned by Interflora has revealed a growing trend towards extravagant public proposals - aimed at attracting maximum attention and securing that all-important ‘yes’. In fact, Interflora’s research revealed that almost two thirds of people would like a ‘public’ proposal, with a quarter of those questioned admitting an extravagant proposal would make them more likely to say ‘yes.’ So, with the pressure on to create the ‘ultimate proposal’, Interflora has teamed up with Lisa Victoria Smith, founder of Isla and Smith Wedding Planning and Design to reveal the dos and don’ts when it comes to popping the big question. Do take into account how your prospective partner-for-life feels about crowds Planning to propose in the middle of Manchester United’s football stadium during a Liverpool game may be your dream, but is it theirs? We’re not saying it’s their way or the highway, but at least find a compromise so that your lover doesn’t wish the ground would swallow them up whole. They may, on the other hand, love a crowd! Try and gauge their reaction in the weeks leading up to your special moment by asking their opinion on public declarations of love. Or, failing this, look at funny ones on YouTube which may point you in the right direction for their reaction. Do put thought into how you’ll do it It’s going to be re-told A LOT, so do make sure that it’s a story worth telling. This doesn’t mean it has to be wildly adventurous or cost a small fortune but it should feel like you have put some serious thought into it. It will be one of your loveliest memories when you get to 90 and you’re reliving it to your grandchildren, so make it count by taking your sweetheart back to places you have been to that you both loved; your first kiss or the moment you first saw them. Believe me, this will
score you some major brownie points in the sentiment department and it will get even the most dry-eyed amongst us weeping away. It’s also wise to do it somewhere that will stand the test of time and that isn’t the latest ‘pop up’ hot spot so that you can return here to rekindle the memory in years to come. Don’t guess! Making a huge investment in a piece of jewellery that they have to wear forever would make anyone nervous. Play it safe and buy into the new trend for dummy rings for less than £50 as a token engagement ring. And it doesn’t have to be diamonds; there are some gorgeous alternatives out there-with emeralds, rubies and pearls taking centre stage. Asking a close friend, your love’s mother or sneaking a peak at their wardrobe or jewellery box for clues into the styles that they already love will help if you do want to buy “the one” up front. Do remember to put your family first You’ve just taken the first step in inviting them to be your new family, so extending the respect to your partner’s parents by asking permission first will go a long way in showing them that you care about their feelings too. Even if they’re not that traditional, it starts your engagement off on a good foot. The same rule applies to when you are basking in your proposal glory; telling family first, ahead of social media posts and friends is a nice way to build a strong foundation between your respective clans. You’ve decided to become family, so you may as well start now! Do try to keep it a secret Loose lips sink ships goes the old wives’ tale, so try to limit the amount of people you tell prior to popping the question. You’re playing a risky game of it getting back to your love, and, if it does, they may feel like the last one to know, which will leave them feeling deflated when the time actually comes.

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL AFTERPARTY LINEUP Tramlines - Sheffield’s inner-city music festival - has revealed the lineup for its official after-parties. Serving up speaker-shaking drum & bass, funk, grime, disco, house and garage are grime MC Bugzy Malone, the flawless Sister Bliss (Faithless DJ Set), three-time MOBO winner Fuse ODG, garage royalty TQD and Artful Dodger, Austrian duo Camo & Krooked, The Streets’ Mike Skinner, drum & bass legends Marky and Zinc, and tons more talent in the form of Coco, Barely Legal, DJ Target, Gotsome, Kideko, Deadbeat, Lowqui and more. Tickets are onsale at tramlines.org.uk for just £12 per day or £20 for a weekend pass, while stocks last. Tramlines is well-known for its genrebusting live music programme, showcasing internationally acclaimed talent alongside the hottest emerging bands. When the sun sets over Sheffield, though, Tramlines is transformed as it takes over the city’s best clubbing spots for two consecutive nights of unadulterated fun. From 10pm on Friday 21 July and Saturday 22 July, the Tramlines after-parties can be found at the o2 Academy, The
Octagon, and Fusion & Foundry. For all things garage and grime, head to the o2 Academy on Friday 21 July. The lineup includes TQD - better known individually as Royal-T, DJ Q and Flava D – who will bring a high octane set of classic garage and bassline to the dancefloor. Joining them will be MOBO nominee Bugzy Malone, Sheffield's own MC Coco, UK garage legends Artful Dodger and DJ Barely Legal. Meanwhile, Sheffield’s finest, including Deadbeat, DR Cryptic and Forca will be appearing in support Saturday night at the o2 Academy sees Fuse ODG heading up the bill, as the multi-platinum Ghanaian-born partystarter unleashes hits like Dangerous Love and Light It Up. After roadblocking the o2 Academy at Tramlines 2015, The Streets’ Mike Skinner returns with a record box full of everything from old-skool to hip-hop. Also touching down is Radio 1 Xtra DJ and Roll Deep cornerstone DJ Target and Gotsome, whose edit of Kayne West’s Fade has been spun by Pete Tong and Gorgon City to name just two. Cause & Affect will showcase a blend of tech-house, bassline and garage, while producer/rapper Donaeo will hype up the crowds with his latest single Black, which features JME and former Tramlines headliner Dizzee Rascal. At Sheffield University's Octagon, festival-goers can get lost in more sensational DJ performances, with Faithless founder Sister Bliss demonstrating an impeccable selection of house and tech-house, and new kid on the block Kideko turning out big tunes such as Crank It (Woah) on Friday night.
Saturday night at The Octagon is a melting pot of sounds headed up by Camo & Krooked, who return to Tramlines by popular demand. Drum & bass royalty DJ Marky will spin his unique, funk-laced style, as heard on the likes of It’s The Way and Silly. DJ Zinc, an artist who has sold over 1,000,000 physical records, including the era-defining Super Sharp Shooter, also appears. 'Producers' producer' and one-time DJ Marky collaborator S.P.Y joins the lineup, alongside Ram Records' Loadstar (formerly known as Xample & Lomax), and the globally recognised MC Lowqui, whose razor sharp lyrical delivery will show why he’s the MC of choice for the Metalheadz family, DJ Marky and S.P.Y. Tramlines' Festival Director, Sarah Nulty, says: We love to watch the whole of Sheffield coming out to party for the Tramlines weekend, and this year is set to be no different. The newly announced after-parties mean that music-lovers can keep dancing for the whole weekend. We're delighted to be bringing exciting new talent like Donaeo to the Sheffield stage, as well as showing off our own, home-grown rising stars like Coco. Tickets for the Tramlines after-parties can be purchased for individual nights for £12 plus booking fee, or as a weekend ticket for just £20 plus booking fee, while stocks last. More Tramlines after-party acts are yet to be announced. For further lineup additions and up-to-the-minute information about Tramlines 2017 visit www.tramlines.org.uk or follow Tramlines on Twitter @tramlines
CIRCUS TRIBUTE TO OWLS AS THEY CHANGE THE COLOUR OF THE BIG TOP The Netherlands National Circus rolls into town for a visit to Sheffield from Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th of February, appearing on the stadium car park at Hillsborough – and that is why the tour organisers have called in a new Big Top to host the spectacular show. Tour promoter Tony Hopkins who hails from Yorkshire and is a huge football fan himself, realised that the normal red and white tent would look out at place at Hillsborough. “I know all about the great rivalry between the two clubs,” said Tony. “I could not repay the co-operation of the landowners by pitching a huge red and white tent just across the road from Hillsborough so I called for our back-up tent and now the Netherlands National Circus will be seen in a huge blue and white Big Top instead.” The Netherlands National Circus has regularly toured the UK in recent years with a world class performance of more than 30 performers combining both traditional and modern circus acts that will guarantee having audiences on the edge of their seats. “Sheffield Wednesday have had the fans on the edge of their seats

On the day, the standard bottom rig anglers need to remember that!) I’ve bought all the components, spent a Sunday afternoon worked best, but I don’t think it was down to position as both had been cast around the steaming rig tubing, and tied up my first swim equally in the search for bites. So, once prepared, a trip to one of my however think that the bait caused a disparity, favourite venues was in order, so I turned up I’m trying a new bait, and four runs had all bright and early at Gawsworth Fisheries in come on that particular offering, which is Cheshire. Three rods were duly cast out, two definitely interesting. I’ll conduct a similar with baits offered on Ronnie Rigs, the other, test next week, but use the same new bait on a ‘control’ with a standard braid bottom both rigs to see if that makes a difference, bait rig for comparison, and all were left and if it does, then hopefully I’ll find out if to attract the attentions of passing carp. All the Ronnie Rig really is all that. I hope so, as three rods stayed there all day… not a flicker, it’s cost me a fortune in bits, but maybe I’m not a sniff. When I wound in at the end of the real catch, and the recent hype is aimed at the day, I found one bait missing, the other the angler, not the fish? Food for thought? two untouched; nothing proved there then… A final word for the robin, who took perhaps hmm… my favourite image of the day. WARNE OFFERS NO EXCUSES Rotherham United interim manager Paul Warne was left bitterly disappointed after his side slipped to a 5-0 defeat at Cardiff City. The Millers boss offered no excuses for his side’s display after goals from Kadeem Harris, Junior Hoilett, Craig Noone and two from Kenneth Zohore secured a comfortable victory for the hosts. After the game Warne gave an honest assessment of the display, as he now looks to pick his side up for next weekend’s trip to Brentford. “We set up with the players that we had available,” said Warne. “Obviously we had some players out for this game – the spine of my team Ajayi, Adeyemi and Ward. From the small squad that I have got really I put a team out that I thought was the best I could. I have no regrets with the team that I picked. “A few of the lads let themselves down today, it was men against boys at times. They (Cardiff) were significantly better than us, they are in good form. I was pleased with the way the lads played in midweek, it showed we can compete against the best teams in the league, so to come here and take such
a drumming was an awakener for a few of them. If they want to play at this level then they need to up their game.” After a quiet start to the game the Millers went behind to a well taken Harris goal. Despite being little between the sides at that stage, a second goal just before the break was crucial as the Millers failed to stop an in form Cardiff side after the break. “I thought that the game in the first half was dour,” Warne added. “They scored with their first shot on target and could have scored another after that but Richard O’Donnell made a great save. We went in two down, I told the lads to go out second half and have a go, but when we conceded early on it became more about damage limitation. Joe Newell was struggling for the last 15 minutes with his glut tightening, so we were virtually down to 10 men which didn’t help. “We didn’t create a great deal but let’s be honest, they just had better quality. They had a lot more pace and power and we couldn’t deal with it. The lad up front was a handful all day running in behind.”
FANS TURN OUT IN FORCE AS MILLERS TRIO ENJOY MEET AND GREET SUCCESS
The queue to meet the Millers trio extended right through the shop, snaking into main reception with many of the waiting supporters using the opportunity to fill in forms to sign up to the Junior Millers scheme. Many supporters also took advantage of the savings in the Red and White Shop sale with some opting to get shirts and pictures signed by Frecklington, Newell and Taylor. Club captain Frecklington expressed his delight at the chance to meet with the attending members of the Millers’ faithful and admitted he was pleased to see so many take time out of the half-term break to do so. “It is always nice to have a chat with and meet the people that give us their unwavering support and put names to the faces that follow us home and away,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “It was a fantastic turnout and we were positioned so that we could see the queue going all the way
through the shop and backing up into reception.
game against Accrington Stanley. “Alfie’s composure for the goal was brilliant, his first touch out of his feet to get him in and his finish was excellent,” he said. “Ask any of his team-mates and they will tell you he is a good player, he has earned the respect of the team and the boys have really taken to him. “He has settled in very well and he has given me a big decision to make now next week, there is no
question about that.” Rovers found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreline after 54 minutes, as forward Jordan Cook broke the deadlock at the Keepmoat Stadium. But Ferguson was delighted with the way his side reacted to going a goal down, and how they managed to maintain their unbeaten home record in Sky Bet League Two. “I thought we were the dominant side in the first half, it was clear early on that it was going to come down to concentration,” said Ferguson. “As a team we showed a lot of guts and determination to not lose, we want to keep this record at home going. “We haven’t lost any ground to Plymouth, we are 11 points ahead of the play-offs with 14 games to go, and I think we are in a very good position.”
Supporters young and old took advantage of the half-term break to visit the Millers home, where Lee Frecklington, Joe Newell and Jon Taylor took up position in the shop to pose for photos and sign autographs.
“I speak on behalf of myself, Joe, Jon and all the lads, when I say that we really appreciate your support and you can definitely make the difference as the 12th man at games, so please stick with us.”

FERGUSON PRAISES STRIKER MAY Manager Darren Ferguson praised striker Alfie May after his goal rescued a point against Luton Town. The 23-year-old, who signed from non-league side Hythe Town in January, came off the bench to slot the ball past Hatters goalkeeper Matt Macey with 10 minutes left of the game. Ferguson admits that May has given him some food for thought, ahead of the next Sky Bet League Two
MAY’S PRIDE AT STRIKE
Alfie May described scoring his first goal for Rovers as the proudest moment of his life. The forward, who joined the club from non-league Hythe Town in January, came on and rescued a point for Darren Ferguson’s side against Luton Town. That goal was his first in red and white, and he says it couldn’t have come at a better time. “I got shivers hearing the crowd when I scored, seeing the boys running over to me, I was so happy. We did well to come back and get a point against a strong side in Luton,” he said. “My mum, dad and niece were here, I think my Dad cried when I scored because he was so happy. “The gaffer has brought me in to score goals so hopefully with a few more I can repay the faith he’s
shown in me.” May’s clinical finish 10 minutes from time ensured that Rovers extended their unbeaten run at the Keepmoat Stadium, and the 23-year-old says the rest of the first team squad have welcomed him with open arms. “From the first day I came on trial, on the Monday morning the lads made me feel so welcome and generally made things a lot easier for me,” he added. “I’ve had to be patient as the players who have been starting have done so well and we’ve got such a good team spirit here. “Football brings you so many friends and I’ve now got to know another brilliant group of lads, the boys have been amazing with me.”

NO CHANGE AT THE TOP The Blades dominated the top v second clash but had to settle for a point. Billy Sharp’s 21st goal of the campaign cancelled out Paddy Madden’s effort as the Blades and Scunthorpe drew once more. Aided by a boisterous large crowd, it was an intense start with United looking to apply the early pressure. Just 85 seconds had elapsed when a quick throw saw Sharp sidefoot over a Lafferty cross. Another quick set-piece, on seven
minutes, saw Duffy shoot wide when in the clear after linking up with the Blades captain. Scunthorpe were clearly operating a pressing game early on and United were seeing more of the ball. Hanson connected with a Lafferty cross but a deflection helped Daniels to make a save. The first Scunthorpe chance saw Dawson drag a shot wide after controlling a pass from Sutton. Wallace took the ball off Sharp’s head and Mirfin blocked a Lafferty
shot as United stayed on the offensive. The final chance of the half arrived on 41 minutes with Hanson meeting Duffy’s cross but Daniels made a comfortable save. United’s dominance of the first half earned a warm reception from the Blades fans at the half-time whistle but two minutes into the second half the mood changed as Scunthorpe netted. Dawson’s low cross squirmed across the face of goal where MADDEN was waiting to beat Moore.
NCS BIG DAY OUT At Saturday’s EFL League One clash between the Blades and Scunthorpe United, local graduates from the National Citizen Service (NCS) enjoyed VIP treatment as they joined the players on the pitch to launch NCS Match Day, a special event organised by the Sheffield United Community Foundation. A handful of lucky Sheffield United fans who are NCS graduates went to the game as special guests of the Club to mingle with the likes of NCS Ambassador George Long, Billy Sharp and Ethan EbanksLandell. The event, supported by Sheffield United Football Club and Sheffield United Community Foundation, launched the national two week NCS Match Day activity, highlighting the positive work that young people have done in their local community. NCS Match Day is the brainchild of the EFL Trust, and delivered by English league clubs right across the country.
NCS is a nationwide experience for year 11s and 12s. It is a chance for teens to shake things up and develop new skills for whatever post-GCSE life has to throw at them. It changes how teens see the world and has a huge impact on communities across the UK with over 1.9 million hours of social action taking place across the country - the equivalent to building 74 Olympic Stadiums and 1 The Great Wall of China. Football fan and NCS grad Charles, 18 from Sheffield, said: “Completing NCS with Sheffield United was the highlight of my summer last year! I cannot speak highly enough of the programme.” By being part of NCS, Charles had the opportunity to complete a week long residential where he abseiled, canoed and rock climbed. His second week, which is also a residential week but back in Sheffield saw Charles complete a number of qualifications. In week three, Charles and his
team volunteered in his local community helping the homeless, all of which was supported by Sheffield United Community Foundation Coaches. Other football fans who want to get involved can register at ncsefltrust.co.uk NCS Ambassador and United goalkeeper George Long, is a big supporter of the programme: “I think NCS is a fantastic programme and I am delighted to be the ambassador for Sheffield United Community Foundation. I think NCS is brilliant. It gives young people the chance to experience a variety of activities and challenges whilst building new friendships and benefitting the local community. Ultimately, NCS lays a solid foundation for these guys to go on confidently and achieve whatever they want in the future.” In Sheffield, the NCS programme is delivered by Sheffield United Community Foundation, with the support of teens who
Celebrations ensued but the visiting side’s lead lasted less than two minutes. Freeman got around the back of the defence, his cross was half cleared but Fleck lifted back into the danger area where Hanson got a touch before Sharp halfvolleyed into the corner of the net. Two minutes later Scunthorpe were reduced to ten men. Toffolo, booked on ten minutes, had already committed two more fouls before clearly obstructing Freeman. Referee Jones produced
have already graduated from the programme, and has made its mark on people’s lives and the local community. Participants enjoy a number of fun-filled team activities while away on a residential retreat, before returning to Sheffield to help local charities raise money through various different community-based events, like fundraising for Sheffield Children’s hospital and helping the homeless. Over 300,000 young people have now participated in NCS. Gary Webb, NCS Manager at Sheffield United Community Foundation believes that more young people in Sheffield can benefit from NCS: “I would encourage any young person to take part in NCS. It is a unique opportunity where you can develop life and employability skills, make new friends and have lots of fun, so feel to text/call 0780 428 2117 for more information or email NCS@SUFCCommunity.co.uk for further information.”
a second yellow before the inevitable red. Four of the next five Blades chances fell to Fleck. Two were blocked by Mirfin and one by Dawson, whilst he blasted one just over the crossbar after patient build up by Freeman and Duffy. As the final ten minutes approached, Wilder changed the tactics, throwing on Lavery for Hanson, soon after O’Shea took the place of Lafferty. Scunthorpe were still a threat, emphasised on 88 minutes. Substitute Mantom attacked down the left and from his cross, Madden turned the ball onto
the near post before the Blades cleared. Five minutes added time was announced and the woodwork was struck again. This time Freeman, Lavery and Fleck linked up but O’Shea’s effort struck a post and rebounded into the grateful arms of goalkeeper Daniels. Wilder attempted one more brave move, replacing defender O’Connell with striker Done, but there were no further chances as both sides collected a point.
LOWER TIER OPEN FOR BLADES FANS
Bramall Lane lower will be open to Blades fans for Saturday’s Sky Bet League One home game against Bolton Wanderers. Following conversations with the Safety Advisory Group and South Yorkshire Police, the club are opening the lower tier to Unitedites. A number of Blades supporters have requested tickets in the Bramall Lane lower and the decision follows a successful trial of three fixtures earlier this year. Operations Director Dave McCarthy said: “Following on from Saturday’s bumper crowd of nearly 28,000, we are making the additional seating available
to ensure as many Blades fans can attend the game as possible. It is another huge game for the Club and demand is already high. We really appreciate this level of support and look forward to similar numbers at the weekend.” Meanwhile the Blades are waiting to confirm new dates for the games against Coventry and Millwall. Coventry have progressed to the final of the EFL trophy, and Millwall’s success in the 5th round of the FA Cup over the weekend means that they will be in action in the next round on March 11th, the date originally scheduled for them to travel to South Yorkshire.
PACKED LANE DISPLAYS POTENTIAL to the Lane. The sheer interest in witnessing a Blades 27,980 people were spectacular effort inside Bramall for a club in its sixth game is a clear indicator of what the Lane to witness season in League future could have the top of the One. The home of table clash with in store for United. the Blades could sell Scunthorpe United. Plans were unveiled out on Saturday, as It was the highest last week to revamp the club welcome attendance in the Boundary Corner promotion rivals, Football League and other spots Bolton Wanderers, on Saturday, a around the stadium. The club is looking to build a new club shop and a number of residential properties. However, it should not be forgotten that the club intend to do significant work to the stadium itself. The redevelopment of the Kop has been in the pipeline for a number of years. The club plans to WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
add an extra 3,215 seats to the back of the stand if the works goes ahead. To the relief of many fans who take a seat on the Kop, including myself, plans are also in place to remove the ghastly columns that often disrupt a view of the action. The owners evidently have ambition for the club, but first it must achieve promotion from League One, and then look to consolidate in the league above. If England had been successful in winning the bid to host the 2018 World Cup, then Bramall
Lane’s capacity could have been as high as 44,500. That number may seem rather lofty, but if
the teams success on the pitch continues, who knows what could be built around them.

GIVING IT OUR ALL - HUTCH It’s been a gruelling schedule of late for the Owls but one they have come through so far with flying colours. Having posted a maximum haul of 12 points during February, Wednesday are set for their fifth game in 18 days as they host Brentford this evening. Delighted with the return from a so far perfect month, Hutchinson says all that matters are the points at this stage of the
campaign. The recent run has seen the Owls pull seven points clear of seventh spot and that gap could be extended further tonight at Hillsborough. The former Chelsea man says the players will continue to fight as hard they can to ensure the good run continues, explaining: “All the boys are doing their utmost and I think you can see that on the pitch and at this stage of
the season, the only thing that matters are the three points. “We obviously want to play good football but the main thing is winning games at the moment. “We’re doing everything we can but obviously it’s hard because it’s our fifth game in a short time and that’s a toll on anyone’s body. Wednesday have every reason to go into the game in confident mood having only suffered one defeat in
Keiren Westwood was full of praise for his team mates after the victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday. For the fourth successive game, Wednesday emerged with three points to strengthen their grip on a top six spot. The Owls triumphed by the odd goal in three at The City Ground and Westwood believes the Owls’ ability to see out games will be a valuable asset going forward this season. He said: “We are grinding out the victories, that’s four in a row now and we’re delighted.
“We can see out a game and it’s a fantastic trait to have. We know if we go in front, we can see out a game. “If you look at our games, we haven’t won many by big margins, it’s 1-0s or 2-1s. We can grind out a game, we can see it out. “That professionalism is there and long may it continue.” The Owls’ number one was at the heart of the first major talking point in the game, as he brought down Ben Brereton in the box, receiving a yellow and conceding a penalty in the process. But Westwood was
the hero from the spot kick as he got down low to save from Ross McCormack, shortly before Almen Abdi struck for the visitors. He added: “I tried to stand my ground but it was a penalty. Under the new rules it’s not a red card. “We’ve done our homework and it was a good save. I’m thankful that I made the save

the last 12 league games, winning eight of those along the way. “We are confident wherever to be fair,” Hutchinson added. “We have great fans and we need them right behind us tonight. It’s a hard league but we go into every game confident. “We understand the pressures that come with playing for Sheffield Wednesday and we’re going out there to fight as hard as we can for this club.”
WESTWOOD FULL OF PRAISE FOR OWLS because it could have been very costly for us. “With the goals, we know that Almen has got that ability, it’s dropped lovely for him and fair play to him. He’s been working hard and I thought he did great. “With Fernando, you’re desperate for him to do well, what a fantastic goal and he was straight in the crowd as well. I’m buzzing for him.”
