DISCOVER FASCINATING TREASURES IN NEW ARCHIVES DISPLAY become one of the bestselling titles in American history. Thomas Paine was also engaged in the world of cast iron bridge building. In this capacity he came into contact with the Walkers of Rotherham, famous iron manufacturers, together they designed and built a number of cast iron bridges. His letter dates from January 1789 and discusses the stagnation of the bridge building business and the illness
of King George III and hints of Paine’s revolutionary republican ideals and opinion on the British constitution. Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Cultural Services, Cllr Taiba Yasseen, said: “The items on display have been chosen by the Archives staff for their interesting or unusual stories that they reveal. We welcome everyone to come along a take a look at our specially arranged exhibition.
“Visitors to the new Archives display will discover a collection of objects with amazing stories which give an astonishing insight into people’s lives during this period through viewing over one hundred years’ of history.” Another item on display is a telegram giving details a shocking theft and a transatlantic manhunt! In 1893, Richard Butterworth a cashier working for Steel, Peech and Tozer stole £760 from the

Visitors can see a significant new display of fascinating historical treasures in the Rotherham Archives and Local Studies section at Clifton Park Museum. One of the prized items is a letter from Thomas Paine to Thomas Walker. Thomas Paine is credited as the godfather of the American Revolution, it was his pamphlet Common Sense which encouraged American independence from Great Britain and went on to

company, which in today’s money is equal to around £84,000. The telegram is from Steel, Peech and Tozer to New York asking for help in locating Butterworth who was believed to have sailed there from Southampton shortly after the robbery. Unfortunately, the American manhunt was unsuccessful and the authorities were unable to locate Butterworth in America. A £100 reward was issued nationwide for anyone who had
information on the location of Butterworth. Also on display, is the 1884 diary of Alfred Ward from Kimberworth who travelled all the way to Australia looking for work. In 1884 the journey to Australia took 53 days, even on a fast ship like the S.S. Cambodia which Alfred
travelled on. This diary covers both his journey there and back, and gives a real insight into world travel in the late 19th century. It recalls a rather eventful Sunday church service on board the ship, in which the parson was too drunk to deliver his service!
These items are just some of the wonderful archive materials on display in the searchroom at Clifton Park Museum. The searchroom is open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 10am to 5pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm.

SHEFFIELD PUPILS TAKE A LEAF OUT OF AUTHOR’S BOOK Children from Tinsley Meadows and Abbeyfield Primary Academy Schools headed out of the classroom to receive a lesson in embarrassing dads, blogs and geeks when author Ben Davis held a special literacy workshop at Meadowhall. Organised to celebrate World Book Day on March 2, the Centre invited the group of 9-10 year olds from the Academy to meet Ben - author of My Embarrassing Dad’s Gone Viral and The Private Blog of Joe Cowley & Danny Dread. They also had the chance take part in the workshop at the Centre involving creative thinking, writing techniques and a “wall of shame” to pen their own tales of embarrassing parents. Deborah Sanderson, Executive Head at Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy, said: “This has been such a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn from a published children’s author. Ben’s books are very child-centric so it’s been a great inspiration to them.”
Workshop leader and author Ben added: “The kids were so much fun to have involved and certainly taught me a thing or two with their own stories; their enthusiasm and ideas were just fantastic!” Meadowhall Centre Director Darren Pearce said: “Meadowhall is proud to be an ambassador for literacy in the Yorkshire region and it’s been a great opportunity for the children to embrace and discover new books and take something away from Ben’s experience.” The Meadowhall workshop centred around Ben’s book, My Embarrassing Dad’s Gone Viral, which tells the story of Nelson’s seriously cringe-worthy Dad who becomes an unlikely internet star. Each child who took part in the session was also given a signed copy of the book to take away and hopefully inspire a new generation of Sheffield writers to document their own adventures and encourage some hilarious bedtime reading. My Embarrassing Dad and other Ben Davis’ titles are published by the respected Oxford University Press, a department of the University of Oxford that aims to further the excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.

DUAL SLALOM RACE TO HIT SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE Star names in the mountain biking world are set to take part in the first-ever Howard Street Dual, being held as part of The Outdoor City Weekender. The dual slalom in Howard Street will be one of the many events of the Weekender, a high-octane weekend of climbing, biking, running, walking and more, taking place from Friday March 17 to Sunday March 19 in and around Sheffield: The Outdoor City. Councillor Leigh Bramall, Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield is an international destination for people that love the outdoors, and our mountain bike trails and scene mean we really are up there with the best of the best. “The first ever running of the Howard Street Dual is sure to be an exciting and exhilarating chance to see some of our homegrown top mountain bikers, who are usually out at the likes of Wharncliffe, Grenoside and Parkwood Springs, right here in Sheffield city centre. “This will be one of the events as part of The Outdoor City Weekender, which will together showcase the very best of Sheffield not just to visitors, but to those who already live, work and play here and would like to try something different.” The Howard Street Dual course, which will take mountain bikers from the top of Howard Street towards the railway station via a descent along grassy and gritty slopes, had design input from Sheffield’s own star mountain biker Craig Evans. Invited riders will race head-tohead, two at a time, down the course in a knockout-style event. The fastest two riders of the day will then take each other on in the grand final. Evans, who will miss the event as he’ll be away competing at the Crankworx series in New Zealand, said: “There are urban downhill events in other cities, but I think an urban dual in a city centre may be a first. “This is a big move for Sheffield and I think it goes a long way to showing the passion for mountain biking here in the city. “I’ve been messing around on a bike in Sheffield since I was a kid and spent most of my time
at Wharncliffe, which is still my favourite ride. “I’m gutted that I won’t be here for The Outdoor City Weekender but it’s been awesome to be involved in the track design. The MTB community are pretty excited about the event. “A good track for me is a varied one with slow and techy parts, jumps, corners and rhythm sections to split the field and make for good racing. The Howard Street Dual will have all of this plus a city centre backdrop; it is going to be an awesome event and a great experience for spectators. “ Jon Dallow, from Sheffield City Council’s Parks and Countryside team, said: “The Howard Street Dual is a great example of how the council works collaboratively with Sheffield’s renowned mountain biking community and businesses to produce places, spaces and events that people who live here want to use – and people also visit the city from further afield for. “This is Sheffield, Steel City Downhill, Clayspades and Bolehills Forever are just some of the parts of the grassroots scene that further builds Sheffield’s unique position in the MTB world. “We also work with brands and businesses such as Cotic, Go Outdoors, Air Drop, Hookit and wider funding bodies such as Sport England. Working together over the last five years, we have created three official purpose-built trails, including the UK’s only city centre dual slalom mountain bike track at Parkwood Springs. “The other two trails, at Lady Canning’s Plantation and Grenoside Woods, attract riders from across the UK. We at the council, and the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, have worked closely with the MTB community to develop these sites. “Plans are also well underway to transform the wider site at Parkwood Springs into a top outdoors destination, with mountain biking potentially being a part of that. It continues to be a really exciting time for mountain biking in Sheffield.” Over the next year, Sheffield will be adding another mountain bike trail to its portfolio at Redmires reservoir, thanks to the successful
crowdfunding campaign championed by the city’s mountain bike community. RADmires, as the campaign is known locally, has already raised £35,000 and is Ride Sheffield’s second crowd-funded trail, after Lady Canning’s was built and launched in 2015, working with the local authority. Racing at the Howard Street Dual will begin at 3pm and finish at around 6pm. Entry is through the This Is Sheffield and the British Cycling websites, where further information can also be found. Numerous fringe events will also take place during the Weekender. These include two mountain bike skills courses from Trail Advantage on Saturday 18 March, which aim to improve the confidence and skills of new and intermediate riders. The courses, run by British Cycling MTB coach Adam Simmonite, will be held on Houndkirk Moor and follow the natural trails that stretch from Ringinglow out to Fox House, taking in Lady Cannings Plantation along the way. The team from Accelerate, in Attercliffe, will also be leading a trail run from Ecclesall Woods out into the Peak District, finishing at the Longshaw Estate. The run on Sunday 19 March is open to any runner that can cover the distance of 13km and 500mts of height gain in less than two hours. Cotic Bikes will be hosting a demo day, at which riders can test multiple mountain bikes, at Lady Canning’s Plantation on Sunday, 19 March, and Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust will also be organising a series of volunteer work events at some of The Outdoor City’s most beautiful natural sites. These will include sessions at Woodhouse Washlands on Friday 17 March and at Wyming Brook and Fox Hagg on Sunday 19 March. Further fringe activities taking place during The Outdoor City Weekender will be announced in the next fortnight.
COUNCIL SUPPORTS CAMPAIGN TO ‘CLEAN SHEFFIELD’ A campaign to keep the city clean and tidy is being supported by Sheffield City Council for the third year running. Keep Britain Tidy’s Clean Sheffield campaign is helping make the city an even cleaner place to live in and visit. As part of the campaign, Keep Britain Tidy will work alongside the Council and with a variety of businesses, community groups and individuals in Sheffield to encourage them to take pride in their local neighbourhoods and is targeted at those who want to make a real difference to the litter levels in their local area. Keep Britain Tidy is a national charity, which coordinates a whole range of environmental programmes to reduce litter in different areas, from
communities and green spaces to waterways and schools. During 2017, the charity plans to collaborate with the Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID), and the Chamber of Commerce, to create strong relationships with local companies, encouraging them to pledge their commitment to the project. There are a number of ways to get involved in the campaign including: • Pick up any litter you see as you are out and about and put it in the nearest bin. • Join an existing litter picking group near you (some can be found on the council website at: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/ out–about/parks-woodlands– countryside/gettinginvolved/ what-is-a-friends-of-group/inyour-area.html) • Organise your own litterpicking event with neighbours and friends in near by grot spots From Friday 3 March until Sunday 5 March, Clean Sheffield will take part in the Great British Spring Clean – a UK-wide partnership campaign aimed at bringing together like-minded people from all walks of life to clear up the litter that blights our cities, towns and villages. The joint campaign hopes to
inspire 500,000 individuals to get involved in this new initiative and join a growing movement of people working towards a litterfree environment. More than £4million is spent each year by Sheffield City Council clearing litter from the city’s parks and streets. This is why the Council is once again calling on all residents and businesses to help them support the Clean Sheffield campaign and dispose of litter in the bins provided. If you would like to arrange a clean up in Sheffield or you are already planning a clean-up for March, please sign up online for the Great British Spring Clean and get your event highlighted on the map so that others can join in. www.greatbritishspringclean. org.uk Great British Spring Clean Litter collection bags will be available for free on request. Please call 0114 273 4567 to arrange a date, time and location for pick up. Don’t forget to use #GBSpringClean and #LitterHeroes on social media. Visit the Great British Clean website for more information or to register your event.

DRIVERS ‘FACE £100 PRICE RISE FROM DISCOUNT RATE RULING’ Drivers face price rises of up to £100 each as a result of this week’s Ministry of Justice ruling on personal injury damages payouts, insurance market research experts Consumer Intelligence warns. The decision to cut the so-called discount rate to a negative -0.75% from 2.5% will increase costs for insurers by up to £3 billion with drivers paying the price, Consumer Intelligence believes. That could add up to £100 to average car insurance premiums – which are already rising – and trigger a “massive jump” in drivers shopping around. The discount rate is used to adjust amounts awarded in major personal injury claims where victims suffering catastrophic injuries are awarded lump sums based on the return that

can be earned when the money is invested and has been set at 2.5% since 2001. The decision to cut it to -0.75% increases the amount that insurers have to pay out. Consumer Intelligence is urging drivers to shop around for the most competitive price and points out new rules on showing last year’s premium on renewal quotes coming into effect in April make comparisons easier. Ian Hughes, Chief Executive of Consumer Intelligence said: “This is going to cause a massive jump in shopping around as this is the first year that insurers are going to have to be upfront about premium changes. “Drivers will see their prices rising and will not be bothered about whether it is the Ministry of Justice or discount rates that are behind the premium increases. “Average car insurance premiums will continue to accelerate and that is before yet another increase in Insurance Premium Tax in June. Everyone should be shopping around to at the very least limit price rises.”

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
Carp fishing in February is always a struggle, not just to get out of bed on cold, wet mornings, but to actually find the fish, and then provoke some action, so I was pleased with a ‘red letter’ day this week. I’m not daft (I like to think not anyway) so picked a venue where a run or two was likely, and turned up just after my angling chum Andy to find that the water was being whipped up into a frenzy by the oncoming Storm Doris, and that it was likely to be a difficult day. Andy set up in a peg he fancied facing the wind, I opted for the swim next door, sheltered greatly behind a thicket of tangled briars, and out of the worst of the weather, where I set about preparing for the day. This particular pool covers about eight acres, and does respond well to large amounts of bait, but having had great success over summer, I’ve learned that it can be a very fickle place, and any changes in the condition are likely to see it switch off completely for a number of days. With that in mind, I had a bucket of particle prepared, which had been left to stew in its own juices for a day or two beforehand; I wanted attraction without too much feed. Before I tackled up, I swung out half a dozen miniSpombs of the mix. It was impossible to introduce by hand, or by catapult, with the prevailing wind, and the Spomb is an ideal way to drop a tight bed of bait just two rod lengths out. After last week, I was determined to try the Ronnie Rig again, and this was attached to a couple of metres of heavyweight leader, fished helicopter style, off a small lead. On the hook, a small, white, 12mm pop up… An underarm cast dropped the lead on the baited spot, the rod was placed in the rest, and a foot of line pulled forward to allow a fairly slack presentation. The fish were not likely to come towards me, and experience has shown that they turn away into open water, and fairly steam off when hooked! I sat back under the brolly, grateful to be out of the wind and near horizontal rain, and started to organise for the day. Bleeeeep! The alarm screamed off, and the first fish of the day headed for open water. I snatched up the rod, and played a nicely marked double figure mirror to the net; a great start! Safely unhooked and quickly returned, I put the same rig (and bait) back on the mark, then bent down to pick up the Spomb rod to drop two more loads over the area. I didn’t get chance. The rod tip arched over, and a second fish charged off before I could even load the Spomb! Two in two minutes, and I hadn’t been fishing for more than quarter of an hour! Again, a double figure fish, this time a common, slipped over the drawcord, before being unhooked and despatched back to the depths. Sensibly, I topped up the swim

with some more particle, before swinging the rig out once more. This time, almost an hour passed before another fish tripped up over my bait, and, as expected, it was a third double figure carp. Other anglers around the lake were struggling, but I could do no wrong which made a refreshing change! Andy popped his head under my brolly to report he had lost a fish, but was finding conditions tough, which was a surprise; Andy knows this lake well, and often leads the way when we fish together, so I was even more pleased with my tactics. The Ronnie Rig was certainly working this week, with each fish squarely snared in the centre of the bottom lip; perhaps I had been a little hasty to dismiss it as a gimmick? Ten minutes later, a barbel came in. A hefty, and pleasing fish perhaps approaching 6lb, a welcome change to the usual carp, and I noted that the fish was in excellent condition. Four fish in a little more than two hours, and, after topping the swim up again with more seeds, another carp, this time slightly bigger at 15lb 4oz, visited the mat. My first five fish had all taken the same 12mm pop up, but by this time, it came off, and I had to replace it with an identical bait. As the wind strengthened, the fish showed no signs of slowing, and over the course of the next few hours, a further six carp and another pristine barbel all came off the tiny baited area no more than two rod lengths away from the bank. In total, I’d used around three kilos of mixed particle, fed on a ‘little and often’ basis, topping up the swim with no more than four mini-Spombs after each fish, and just two of the new 12mm pop ups! After enjoying eight hours on the bank, conditions were becoming untenable, so it was time to pack up before the brolly was snatched away by the wind. I’d had a great day, with a dozen decent fish, ten carp, and two barbel, for a total weight approaching 140lb, using a single rod, and just two hook baits. The huge drop in atmospheric pressure had obviously got the fish feeding, but despite that, others had found it hard going, with only odd fish caught. Luck? Location? Baiting? Rig? Hook bait? Probably all of the above, but just for once, all falling into place…and who am I to complain? Next week will probably bring a blank!

A BITTER PILL TO SWALLOW Rotherham United interim manager Paul Warne admitted his side’s last-gasp defeat at the hands of Brentford was a “bitter pill to swallow”. The Millers came within a whisker of claiming their second away point of the season after sub Anthony Forde levelled matters late on for a second time with a long-range screamer after Tunisian international Aimen Belaid cancelled out Jota’s first-half strike. Despite Jota’s notching a brace near the end to take the game away from the Millers and claim the matchball in the process, Warne was quick to express his pride at his side’s second-half display. “I thought we played really well and I was really proud of the lads, and I told them that after the game,” Warne enthused. “I don’t think at two-two, it flattered us. I thought we were really good, especially in the second half.” Following Forde’s first league goal of the season for the second Millers equaliser, the game took a cruel twist for the visitors when Cardiff loanee Semi Ajayi was adjudged to have handled in the box, in the second minute of second-half stoppage
time and Jota struck from the spot before rubbing salt in the wounds with a late fourth for the hosts, with virtually the last kick of the game. Speaking afterwards, Warne admitted the game hinged on the spot kick with his side unfortunate not to have claimed a share of the spoils in West London. “At 2-2 and to concede the goal in the 92th minute in the way we did, I thought it was a bit harsh on Semi, who I thought was brilliant again today,” Warne added. “I think it was handball but it was ridiculously unlucky. He couldn’t get his arm out of his way. That was unfortunate and for the fourth goal, we were throwing bodies forward and it was the last kick of the game. “The lads gave everything and I wouldn’t have anyone criticising my team. I think all the Rotherham fans, who came down today will be pleased with the effort they put in and they clapped them off, as they always do. “I think away from home, it was a good performance but it would have been nice to come
away with a win or at least a 2-2 draw. However, the lads did not crumble and they played their hearts out.” The Millers were dealt a blow prior to kick-off when ‘keeper Richard O’Donnell, who was initially named on the team sheet, was forced to withdraw after suffering a suspected broken finger in the warm-up with Lewis Price promoted from the bench. After praising Price’s performance in light of his 11th hour call up, Warne said the injury to O’Donnell summed up Rotherham’s luck at the moment. “We had the disappointment of Richard O’Donnell going down in the warm-up and Pricey had to play, who has only trained two days in five weeks, so that’s pretty impressive and I thought he performed really well. “Richard caught his finger on a shot and I don’t know if he’s broken it. I joked it’s like we’ve run over a cat, or something as we do not seem to be getting any luck at the moment.”
TRUST SCOOP TOP REGIONAL AWARD FROM THE EFL
Jamie Noble, Head of Community said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won the regional Community Club of the Year award and to be in the mix for the national award against five strong opponents. “It has been another successful year for the Trust, upon receiving the news the whole office was overjoyed. This year has been fantastic for RUCST, moving to a brand new state of the art purpose built facility at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, which caters for a large office space for our staff, an activity suite and three classrooms. “A big factor behind our nomination is due to the work we are delivering to local communities, especially from different ethnic backgrounds through our Sport England funded project. The first year of the project (Getting back in to Sport) has been very successful and we have engaged various different communities, especially Muslim women who have low participation in sport. “We have also created a fantastic partnership with local Mosques, which has been something the Trust has been working towards over the past few years and we are proud to say we have been made to feel
incredibly welcome in what is a fantastic space for the local community. “We have also been commended for our work in a host of other areas including education, sports participation and inclusion. “The staff have worked tirelessly in the past year and this nomination is testament to the hard work and commitment of a number of individuals.” The Trust scooped the national award in 2012, and the regional award in 2016 (North East & Yorkshire).
Sports Trust have been named the North East and Yorkshire Community Club of the Year for a second year in a row. Having won the award in 2016, the Trust again blew the judges away to pick up this prestigious accolade, and in turn have been nominated for the National Community Club of the Year Award alongside five other EFL Clubs. The shortlists for the awards were announced by the EFL today, with the regional winners invited to attend a formal ceremony in London on Monday 6th March at the Houses of Parliament. The regional winners will then be invited back to the National EFL Awards on Sunday 9th April celebrating the on and off pitch excellence across the League’s 72 clubs.
FERGUSON POST SHCFA YOUTH ACCRINGTON COUNCIL ON Rovers manager Darren Ferguson was ruing missed opportunities after his side drew 2-2 with Accrington Stanley. Goals from Tommy Rowe and John Marquis had Rovers leading going into the final 10 minutes at the Keepmoat Stadium, but they had to settle for a point. And Ferguson was disappointed that his team could not find that elusive third goal which could have put the result beyond doubt when Rovers were ahead. “We had so many opportunities to score that third goal today and unfortunately for us we could not find it to kill the game off,” he said. “We had loads of chances to score, we are an attacking team but we are not getting enough goals at the minute, and we should have had a lot more than two goals that’s for sure. “I felt that when we went 2-1 up that we would go onto win the game comfortably, but that was not the case and it proved costly.” Rovers, who still sit top of Sky Bet League Two, travel south to Cambridge United on Tuesday night looking to find their first win in five games. “We need to make sure we get back to winning ways on Tuesday night and how we do that is going back to basics,” added Ferguson. “I have a good team and there is no panic about the place, but we need to get back winning it’s as simple as that. “We have to go to Cambridge and get the win, it doesn’t matter how you do it as long as you come away with three points.”

15 games took place in the County Senior League on Saturday afternoon, with a particularly busy Premier Division fixture list. There were also big games at the top of Division One and the Division Two South. Premier Division League leaders Swallownest FC bounced back from last weeks’ loss to Swinton Athletic with a statement result against Denaby United. Jordan Cooper, Jack Watts, Jordan Stocks, Jamie Hopkins and Brandon Ashmore were all on target for Swallownest who ran-out 5-1 winners at Balby Carr Community Academy. Frecheville kept the pressure up on the leaders, as they beat Wombwell Main 2-1 away. Frecheville remain seven points off the lead in second place. The aforementioned Swinton made it 10 consecutive wins, with a huge 9-2 home win over Millmoor Juniors. Tommy Needham scored four, Alex Wilkinson two, Jake Ford three and one from Curt Wilkinson, as Swinton consolidated third place. The result of the day was for fourth bottom Athersley Recreation Reserves, who won a crucial game against bottom side Denaby Main 8-0 at Sheerien Park. The win is Athersley’s first of 2017. Jubilee Sports moved into fifth position, as they beat fourth placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves 2-1 at Chaucer School. Mid table sides Houghton Main and Handsworth Parramore Reserves played-out a rare goalless draw at Middlecliffe Lane. Division One League leaders Wickersley hosted third placed South Kirkby Colliery at Wickersley School. South Kirkby edged a tight affair 1-0 to move into second place, just a point off the pace. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 could not take advantage of Wickersley’s slip as they fell to a 3-2 loss away against Brinsworth Whitehill. Ben Snee, Greg Mason and Matt Blakemore made up a hat-trick of headers for Brinsworth, who sit in lower mid-table. Ecclefield fall to third place. Goals from Richard Dey and Alex Butler gave fourth bottom Silkstone United a 2-0 win over fourth top Sheffield Bankers at Silkstone Recreation Ground. High Green Villa edged-out Davy FC 4-3 in a seven goal thriller at Davy Sports Ground. It is the fifth occasion in eight attempts in 2017 that High Green have scored four or more goals. Division Two South League leaders Kiveton Park’s winless February continued, as they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Maltby Main Reserves at Muglet Lane. Kiveton have collected just three points from three games in February. Marcus Clarious scored all four goals as second placed Swinton Athletic Reserves beat Caribbean Sports Reserves 4-3 at Firvale School. Swinton sit just two points off the pace, but have played a game more than Kiveton. Sheffield Medics ran-out 4-2 winners over mid-table AFC Dronfield Reserves at Norton Playing Fields. The Medics are up to third and in fine form, with nine wins from their previous 10 games, dating back to October. The Medics are away to Kiveton Park next time out. Sheffield Bankers Reserves were 5-1 winners against Renishaw Rangers at Hillsborough College. It is second time the Bankers have scored five against Renishaw this season, with reverse fixture in November ending 5-0. Billy Sharp netted a goal in each half to send the vast majority of the 27,000 supporters inside Bramall Lane home happy and strengthen the Blades grip on top spot in League One. Reflecting on a deserved victory, the United boss remarked:
“We played well and won an important game, that was the aim and we’re delighted with the result. “First-half we got sucked into Bolton’s game, we conceded too many fouls, we were over committed and made a few rash challenges, which gave them chances to put the ball in our box and we got caught up in the occasion. “But we settled the
lads down at half-time and we were excellent in the second-half, we were dominant and there was only ever going to be one winner. “We were disciplined, we got the first pass out and every time we went forward we looked dangerous and Bolton really had no answer. Wilder added: “We’ve dominated both Scunthorpe and Bolton and in doing so made two very good sides
look average. “We should have beaten Scunthorpe and we certainly weren’t going to miss this opportunity to put down a little marker with 12 games remaining. “The winning margin could have been far greater and we deserve credit from the opposition. I’m always honest when we get beat and never try to clutch at straws or put a spin on things.”
BLADES DOMINATE PROMOTION RIVALS United produced a dominant display to beat promotion rivals Bolton and in doing so strengthen the position at the top of the table on Saturday afternoon. A well taken brace from skipper Billy Sharp, including a second-half penalty was enough to see off Phil Parkinson’s Wanderers in front of another crowd in excess of 27,000. For the clash against third-placed Bolton, boss Wilder named an unchanged starting XI, with the only change on being on the bench, where James Wilson replaced the injured Joe Riley. For the visitors, former United stopper Mark Howard started. On a wet and windy afternoon at the Lane, United had the first chance of the game
in the eighth minute. Having had a shot deflected wide for a corner, Coutts floated in a teasing ball that tempted Howard off his line, Hanson saw his goal bound header cleared and from the rebound Wright volleyed over under pressure. But in the next attack, the Blades took the lead. Wright bravely blocked Wilkinson’s shot, and after Basham released Duffy, he picked out Fleck whose ball beat the attempted touch of Beevers leaving SHARP in the clear and the Blades skipper silenced the travelling supporters by slotting home his 22nd goal of the season past Howard with the aid of the post. In response, Henry freed Moxey down the left, but his inviting ball evaded both
Wilkinson and Le Fondre. United enjoyed plenty of the ball in the middle of the park, with Coutts, Fleck and Duffy dictating much of the game. On the half hour, Morais had two freekicks in a short space of time, but neither came to anything. Fleck was the first player booked by referee Dean following a mistimed challenge on Thorpe, who was later replaced by Dervite. As half-time approached the home support became frustrated following a succession of freekicks going against the Blades, but Lafferty and then O’Connell ensured the danger was swiftly averted as two minutes of added time brought he curtain down on the first-half. United were quickly
out of the blocks following the restart with Sharp miscuing an effort wide from Hanson’s header down. Moments later, Sharp tried to replay the favour from Duffy’s ball over the top, but Dervite cleared in the nick of time. The Blades continued to dominate and only a fortunate save from Howard denied Sharp a second with a header after Fleck had picked out his run. Le Fondre was replaced by Long, amid boos from the home supporters following his lack of sportsmanship in the first-half and at the next stoppage in play, Carruthers replaced Duffy. Bolton’s final change saw Clayton take the place of Clayton. From another quickly taken corner, Coutts fired inches
wide of the far post. With 20 minutes United got the second their dominance deserved. Following a sliced clearance from Howard, the Blades took a quick throwin and as Carruthers entered the penalty area and cut inside Wheater was penalised by referee Dean having clipped the heels of the substitute. In front of the Kop, SHARP stepped up and sent Howard the wrong way. Time was in United’s favour, but Wright was required late on to block an effort from Clayton. At the other end, Dervite appeared to hold back Sharp, but Dean waved play on. With a minute left of the 90, Lavery replaced Hanson, who received a standing ovation. Three minutes of added time were
signalled and it was the Blades who finished the game of the front foot as they landed what could prove to be a telling blow in the race for promotion. The last action of the afternoon saw the Lane rise to applaud skipper Sharp who was withdrawn with seconds remaining. Blades: Moore, Fleck, O’Connell, Basham, Sharp (Ebanks-Landell 90), Wright, Coutts, Hanson (Lavery 90), Freeman, Duffy (Carruthers 63), Lafferty. Unused: Long, Done, Wilson, O’Shea, Bolton: Howard, Moxey, Beevers, Vela, Osede, Morais, Henry, Wheater, Thorpe (Dervite 43), Wilkinson (Clayton 66), Le Fondre (Long 62)
WILDER DEMANDS RESPECT FROM RIVALS Wanderers, Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield: “Give us and third before a bit of credit, the the fixtures began, last two managers is a healthy return. However, the race for are clutching at straws.” Wilder the Championship was referencing the took an unlikely assumption from turn, as mind games Scunthorpe boss, crept into play. Graham Alexander, After Saturday’s that his team was 2-0 win over Bolton worth more than a point at Bramall Lane, despite being under threat for large periods of the game. Phil Parkinson was quick to find excuses following their defeat, suggesting that John Fleck should have seen red for a challenge on Tom Thorpe, and that Samir Carruthers dived to win a penalty. To add to the drama, Bolton’s
WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
Chris Wilder’s side has progressed through arguably two of the toughest games of the season relatively unscathed. Four points from six, against the clubs that sat in second
chairman, Ken Anderson, released a sensational statement on Monday night. Anderson mentioned the Fleck challenge, the supposed dive and expressed annoyance at the fact tickets were taken away from Bolton in the Bramall Lane lower tier. Anderson also felt it appropriate to mention that the Blades had been in a similar situation in 2012, before losing out to Sheffield Wednesday. Whatever minds games United’s rivals choose to instigate, it will only fuel the fire for Wilder’s side. The best way to answer these doubts and questions is to
do the business in the remaining 12 games. If Billy Sharp’s reply to Gary Madine’s cheap insult in the build up to the game
is anything to go by, the Blades might just find themselves top of the league come April 30th.

EVERYBODY TOGETHER Carlos Carvalhal has underlined the importance of everybody sticking together as we approach a crucial month in the season. The Owls won four games from six in February but suffered defeats in the last two. Ahead of a big month in the Championship for Wednesday, which includes three home games from four, Carlos
says it’s vital everyone sticks together. A home clash against Norwich is next-up and he explained: “It is a crucial moment of the season, it won’t decide anything but it will be very important. “It’s important we put everybody together to achieve points and to stay in a good position. “Next month will be a good challenge to us, it’s important that our fans
play their part in this challenge, we need them for sure.” The Canaries are six points behind Wednesday in 8th position, meaning Saturday’s fixture at Hillsborough has plenty of significance for both sides. He added: “We must be focused in all the games because they are all a threat and at the end, we will see what we
Skipper Glenn Loovens says Wednesday must now dust themselves down and look forward to a huge game at Hillsborough next weekend. The Owls host a Norwich side who are in the chasing pack behind sixth spot and the captain says this game is the only focus for the squad. Prior to back to back defeats against Brentford and Leeds, the Owls had won four successive Championship games and remain strongly
positioned in the top six. Loovens said: “We have a good group and we know what we can do. “Football is what we do, it’s what we are used to. We don’t have any nerves, we are just looking forward to the next game. “We take it game by game, there is no point looking too far ahead. “Norwich is the first one, we want to make sure we go back to Hillsborough and get back to winning ways next week. “Only then will we
look to the game that follows.” Loovens added: “We have to put the Leeds result behind us and move forward. “It was a derby and
2016/17
achieved. “The most important is that we must run, fight and try to play. In the Leeds game, I thought we did this and that is a good signal because if we are like this, we will achieve more victories. “Everybody wants the same from the players to the fans. Let’s put everyone together and try to push everyone up. Let’s be positive to achieve something.”
WE MUST LOOK FORWARD - LOOVENS a big game for both teams. It was always going to be tight but like I said before, I think we deserved more out of the game.”
