LESLEY GARRETT MAKES HER MARK ON CAST Doncaster-born, international opera star Lesley Garrett, has ‘made her mark’ on Cast in support of the charity’s most ambitious fundraising campaign to date, Make Your Mark. Lesley Garrett comments, ‘I’m thrilled to support such an important cultural asset in my beloved hometown. I’m very proud to make my mark on Cast, a charity that welcomes local people from all walks of life to
be captivated by music, dance and theatre which may not otherwise have reached them.’ Cast is Doncaster’s only professional state-ofthe-art performance venue. Built in 2013, it serves England’s largest borough and presents a wide-ranging artistic programme in a place identified as the seventh least culturally engaged place out of 354 areas in England. Earlier in February, Lesley performed to a sell-out crowd at
Cast and following an evening of song and reminiscences, Lesley signed a piece of ‘Cast Confetti’ in support of Make Your Mark. The ‘Confetti Wall’ is a unique installation in Cast’s main foyer where members of the public can dedicate their name to a ‘piece of Confetti’ and pledge a donation. Lesley’s Confetti piece joins several other donors’ each giving £50, £80 or £150 in support of the charity’s transformative work.
Lesley adds, ‘Growing up in Doncaster helped shape my life and I encourage others to support Cast too, so that together we can make sure more local people experience life-changing artistic opportunities. It’s about time we started celebrating and supporting charities like Cast, that are taking the lead in transforming communities at risk of being left behind.’ Lesley was instrumental in securing the funding for Cast’s
development, hosting a charity concert back in 2002 at Doncaster Racecourse to raise money for the town’s new theatre. Continuing her dedication to culture in Doncaster, Lesley has pledged to support Cast as its first ever Patron, lending her respected and highprofile endorsement to the Charity. Mathew Russell, Cast’s Interim Executive Director said ‘Lesley has seen at first-hand the transformative effects of great culture throughout her illustrious career. I know that Lesley’s support for our work will make a real difference

NEW FOOTBALL FACILITY DEDICATED IN HONOUR OF FORMER COUNCILLOR It’s the third “Parklife” football facility to be created in Sheffield, as part of a national partnership with The FA. And last week a groundbreaking ceremony took place at the new football hub and community fitness facility on the site of the former Westfield school in Westfield Crescent, Mosborough, which will be officially named the Isobel Bowler Sports Ground in memory of the popular and dedicated councillor. Councillor Lea added: “As home to the world’s oldest football club, it is only fitting that Sheffield should be leading the way nationally with this. “The overarching aim is to halt the decline in football and turn it from a sport that requires subsidy into one that generates surplus. We also want to invest in future facilities and the development of the sport. “Football is Sheffield’s biggest team sport with over 800 teams, the

It is significant for sports participation, community activity and associated health benefits. “This partnership with the FA is a great thing for our city. The centre will be operated by Pulse Fitness, which also manages the football hubs at Thorncliffe and Graves.

HERD ABOUT THE SPECIAL VISITOR AT MEADOWHALL? Oona the elephant delights Sheffield schoolchildren in Centre as part of community partnership to introduce theatre to younger audiences. Schoolchildren from Concord Junior School came face to face with “Oona the Elephant” this week at Meadowhall, as part of a special partnership that introduces youngsters to the experience of live theatre. Oona - a spectacular life-size elephant puppet - took time out from her busy rehearsals at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre, where she will be appearing shortly in the hit show “Running Wild”. In her first ever visit to Yorkshire, Oona was “herded” on to the Meadowhall malls to meet the schoolchildren from Concord who will also be going to see the live show next week as part of a joint initiative
with Sheffield Theatres, funded by Meadowhall. Michelle Kouni, headteacher at Concord Junior School, said: “The children were very excited about meeting Oona in person at Meadowhall, and the story will really be brought to life for them when they see the show next week. This is a fantastic experience, and we are just delighted to have been invited by Meadowhall to be part of this initiative.” Oona, along with a talented cast of puppeteers and actors, is appearing at the Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield, in the week-long run of “Running Wild”. The production is a successful adaptation from the bestselling children’s book of the same name by author Michael Morpurgo, who also wrote War Horse. Running Wild recounts the adventures of a boy who has to survive in the Indonesian jungle after being saved from a tsunami by an elephant. Oona and Running Wild is appearing at Sheffield Lyceum Theatre 7-11 March inclusive, including two matinee performances. JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH in My Harry Potter Last Will and Tasty Mint CASTS A SPELL Graham Fellows is best known for his comic creation, John Shuttleworth who starred in the hit series 500 Bus Stops (BBC 2) and the award-winning radio series The Shuttleworths (BBC Radio 4). Graham was already well known as an actor and creator of the hit single, Jilted John which reached number 4 in the UK charts in 1978, he revived the band in August at this year headlining at the now legendary Rebellion Festival. Graham’s recent TV credits as John Shuttleworth include Celebrity Antiques Road Trip (ITV) and Pointless (BBC). In 1992 Graham was nominated for the prestigious Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Fringe for his live show, John Shuttleworth’s Guide To Stardom. Many live tours have followed, including 2000 & John for which Graham won the Manchester Evening News Comedy Award. He also won the prestigious Fringe Award for best show in 2010. As an actor, Graham has featured as Les Charlton in Coronation Street (ITV), Comics (Channel 4) Coogan’s Run (BBC 2), Time Gentlemen Please (Sky), Heartbeat (ITV) and Ideal (BBC 2) and playing Eric Sykes in BBC 2’s Hattie. He provided all the voices for Aardman’s Bafta Award winning short film Stage Fright. Graham wrote and directed (and starred in as Shuttleworth) two feature films Southern Softies on location in the Channel Islands, the sequel to the hit
film It’s Nice Up North. Both movies enjoyed theatrical releases and were broadcast on Sky Arts. Graham must agree it’s “nice up north” as a few years ago he bought a derelict church in the Orkney Isles and converted it into a recording studio. Graham now also co runs a production company Chic Ken Productions. Their most recent production is John Shuttleworth’s Lounge Music, a four part series for BBC Radio 4 which includes special guests CLARE GROGAN, MARI WILSON, NICK HEYWARD and CHRIS DIFFORD. BAND FINALISTS TO ROCK OUT AT O2 ACADEMY SHEFFIELD Seven unsigned bands from Sheffield and the surrounding areas are at the next stage of their route to stardom after being selected for the regional heat of The Pogues Irish Whiskey and Academy Events’ Shot At Discovery campaign, as they look to find the UK’s next big rock band. The bands will battle it out at O2 Academy2 Sheffield on Arundel Gate on Saturday 11th March 2017 in front of members of the public, music industry professionals and guest judges. The winner of the Sheffield heat will compete alongside nine other regional finalists at London’s O2 Academy Islington on 24th April 2017. The overall winning band will receive £3,000 towards band equipment, as well as recording, mixing and mastering with member/s of the legendary band, The Pogues as guest producers. The recordings will then be released as an EP. Comment from The Pogues: “We’re blown away by how many bands have entered in Sheffield and the surrounding areas, there were literally hundreds and the competition is fierce. There’s some exciting new talent out there
and we’re looking forward to hearing more from our finalists.” Sheffield’s seven finalists are: Femur, Graces, Sobriquet, Home Wrecked, Steel Trees, The Blewes and The Velcro Teddybears. Tickets to watch the finalists at O2 Academy Sheffield can be bought here. Hosting duties for the night will be in the hands of DJ Matt Stocks. Matt hosts his weekly podcast, Life In The Stocks, exploring the lives of musicians, actors and comedians and guests have included, Al Barr (Dropkick Murphys), Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!), Brian Fallon (The Gaslight Anthem) and Matt Caughtran (The Bronx). He’s also DJ’d at London’s iconic venue,
O2 Academy Brixton, hosted the Lock Up Stage at Reading Festival and the Ska Punk at Slam Dunk Festival for the last three years. The Pogues’ Irish Whiskey contains the legendary spirit and poetic rebelliousness of the Irish band. A robust blend of 50% Irish grain whiskey aged in bourbon oak casks and 50% single malt Irish whiskey aged in sherry casks, The Pogues whiskey has an aroma of malts and cracked nuts and an ABV of 40%, it’s not for the faint hearted. Available in 70cl bottles from online retailers including Amazon, Drinksupermarket and Master of Malt for around £30.
The Velcro Teddybears will be one of the bands competing this Saturday at the Academy

John Shuttleworth hits the road for his latest tour, following appearances on Celebrity Antiques Roadshow, Pointless, and the second series of Radio 4’s John Shuttleworth’s Lounge Music and he calls in at Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 30th March. A recent health scare (well, a mild bout of Athletes Foot) has made “Sheffield’s finest singer/ songwriter” (The Times) focus on his mortality, and the many things he needs to do before the inevitable move into a hospice. Can sole agent, Ken Worthington pull out the stops and make John a star before his retirement? As befits a man living on borrowed time – John considers Life’s major issues: like the excitement he felt when sucking his first mint: “It gave my tongue activity, as the mint’s flavours bore into me, turning my grey world azure blue – I remember my first Polo, do you?” And John will miss his trips to Sutton on Sea, Lincs, to check Ken’s beach chalet, via the A1111: “Having fun, fun, fun, fun on the A1111. Like the A1 but 4 times as good! It’s the A1111”. As well as jaunty new songs, John will bash out trusted favourites on his Yamaha organ: “Two Margarines”, “I Can’t Go Back To Savoury Now”, “Mutiny Over The Bounty”, “Y Reg” plus more recent crowd pleasers like “How’s Yer Nan?” and” Mingling With Mourners”. The performance at Sheffield City Hall will include a special guest appearance by JILTED JOHN .

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
Another busy week, although my hours on the bank are starting to be curtailed temporarily due to unfortunate family circumstances, so I must make the best of them when I can! As a result, I’ve been back on a Staffordshire ‘runs water’ as my intention was to catch something, rather than sit there all day behind motionless buzzers, and then proclaim myself a ‘hardcore’ carper; I go fishing in the hope that I will catch, not to appear ‘carpy’… It snowed again, and in the darkness, as I approached the venue, it crossed my mind that I wouldn’t actually get there as I drove over the hills, crawling forward, trying to spot the vehicle in front, with wipers going like the clappers. Conditions promised to be awful again, with the forecast predicting that the snow would change to sleet, and then rain, as the day progressed; brilliant, something to look forward to, especially on a venue that has a bivvy ban! Eventually, I slithered into the car park, and loaded the barrow, slid on the waterproof cover, and stomped through the glutinous muck to try and find my mate who was also setting up. The weather was atrocious, so up went the flatback brolly, and all my kit was deposited beneath it, before I started to get organised; a single rod is all that is allowed, and in truth, it was still set up from my last visit, so was quickly coupled together, and dumped onto the rests. A small, white 12mm pop up was tied onto my Ronnie Rig (yes, I’m still experimenting) and it was dropped less than two rod lengths out in a few feet of wind whipped water… Half a dozen small Spombs of particle followed, then it was time to wait… Surprisingly, over the course of the next eight hours, I had eight fish on the mat, all doubles to 16lb, lost three further fish, and missed a couple of runs. In the next peg, my chum had started off well with the first fish of the day, then had no more, and in the peg immediately adjacent to him, a second mate hadn’t heard so much as a bleep all day! We were all fishing within thirty yards of each other, all fishing much the same way, yet I had fish in my peg and they didn’t. It really is that simple; if they aren’t in front of you, you can’t catch them! As we packed up, I really could have done with a portable shower to wash off all the accumulated mud, which stopped the barrow wheel turning twice, and made my boots weigh double what they should! Yuck! I had chance to return to a favourite water this week, a club pool, surrounded by mature woodland, full of bird life, and peacefully quiet behind its natural screen, so I was mortified to find that many trees, and much bankside cover had been hacked about as though a blind Samurai warrior had passed through when drunk. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the need for lake and forestry management, but unless someone knows different, the mature, deciduous woodland posed no threat, and a work party to butcher them looked the work of those with a work party organised, but no work to do… After such a

disappointing beginning, my session didn’t get any better with a resounding blank, but I did take time to chat to other anglers which is always a pleasure, especially when they are keen to share ideas and tactics. Sadly, none of us caught, so I spent my time watching others at work on the bank which was fascinating… Angler one; a bivvy dweller, had been there all night, so his traps were set and he was going to do nothing to disturb them. He rarely left his abode all day, except to tidy his swim, then return to the bedchair, content to wait for the fish to come to him. Angler two; a lure chucker, carefully working the margins, and then open water with a selection of lures. An amiable chap, came for a chat, told me of past captures, and asked how I was doing before wandering on his way around the lake. Angler three; me, recasting every couple of hours, trying different presentations, nosey, frustrated. Angler four; this chap was an enigma, but absolutely intriguing to watch, and, if I may say, a master at work. I didn’t even realise he was there for some hours, all of his kit set well back from the bank, it was only when the sun reflected briefly off a pair of binoculars, that I noticed him watching the water intently from behind a tree. He approached the water’s edge like oil oozing slowly downwards, careful to creep, each footfall carefully measured, his profile careful not to break the skyline, and then his cast, a gentle underarm swing with the lightest lead possible to avoid disturbance, barely made a splash. Once he had gently set down his rod, tightened the bobbin, and was content that all was correct, he stealthily crept back to position behind the trees, and quietly brewed up, and not once did I note him take his eyes off the water; he was watching all the time, seeking a chance, improving the odds… I could’ve watched (and learned) all day, but he kept vanishing, blending into his surroundings like a ghost (what was left of them) and was deathly quiet… the reason I took so long to even notice him at all, and it made me think about my angling. Do I take too much kit? (Yes) Do I pay enough attention to my surroundings? (Probably not) Am I too noisy on the bank? (Could improve) Do I take as much care to remain undetected like this angler? (No) Should I? (Yes) Will I catch more fish if I do? (Definitely). So, that is this week’s lesson… I can still, after over thirty years on the bank, learn from others, and recognise some of my failings, and the need to ‘up my game’ to improve my angling. Complacency is to be avoided, and I’d like to thank this particular angler for reminding me of that…. If I could find him….

THE LADS GAVE ME EVERYTHING Interim Manager Paul Warne assessed his side’s performance after a 2-0 defeat on home soil against Aston Villa. With the scores level at the break, the Millers looked good for a point until an unfortunate own goal from Will Vaulks opened the scoring on 68 minutes. “I was happy with the way I set the team up; it was the best I could muster,” said Warne. “We worked really hard with them this week to get them up for the game and I thought they were. We had a little bit of misfortune with players going down (injured) and Wardy was dizzy after 30 minutes, it didn’t really help me. But I just said to the lads we need to pick them up for another big game on Tuesday. “Quality did tell in the end. When we were 1-0 down it was quite an even game, I think they had better chances in the first half – I’m not disputing that. On another day a corner might drop and we might get a goal. I felt that the more we were having a go at them, the more we were vulnerable to the counter-attack and they’ve got pace throughout the team. “I’m disappointed but I’m not disappointed with the lads. I’d love to send the fans home happy with a
win but the lads have given me everything they’ve got. What more can I ask them to do?” Villa’s second arrived from Jonathan Kodjia on 87 minutes whilst the ball just wouldn’t drop for Warne’s side at the other end. “I want the fans to leave here feeling happy and entertained,” he continued. “I decided to go 4-4-2 and set up to win but Jedinak’s sitting in their midfield, I thought he was outstanding today. He blocked all of the positive play we tried to do. We had two attacking wingers and I was hopeful before the game that we would at least score some goals and give the fans something to clap about. I’m not embarrassed the way we played, the lads have given everything they’ve got but they’ve lost to the better team. “It didn’t help with Kelly going off. Then I had an injury to Tayls (Jon Taylor) with his back after Wardy felt dizzy. I made my subs prior to when I wanted to. I couldn’t really affect anything apart from putting Tom up with young Jerry. “They had a couple of injuries themselves but they kept putting more and more pace on. I’m obviously upset that we lost, but I’m still proud of the way the lads keep going to the end.” The Millers had a header cleared off the line – Tom
Adeyemi saw his effort hacked away by Kodjia before Forde’s drilled effort was expertly saved by Sam Johnstone. “There isn’t a lot wrong with the team. The team spirit’s there and they train hard every day with us. They’ve been brilliant for me. They’re not that far away from winning games. “I spoke to their staff after the game and they were really complimentary but, unfortunately, that’s not enough.”

FERGUSON FRUSTRATED Darren Ferguson was frustrated after his side drew 0-0 with Crawley Town at the Checkatrade.com Stadium. It was a game of two goalkeepers as Glenn Morris in the Red Devils goal saved a John Marquis spot kick in the first half, before Ian Lawlor made a double save to deny Joe McNerney and Mark Connolly respectively. Marquis’ missed penalty was Rovers’ sixth spot kick miss of the season and Ferguson believes those missed chances have cost his side valuable points. “I am very frustrated and very disappointed at the result, but we were very unfortunate that we came up against a goalkeeper that was adamant that he was not going to concede,” said Ferguson. “We were completely dominant in the first half, but
we’ve missed six penalties now this season and that is too many and it’s costing us points. “It was just one of those days where the ball wouldn’t go in the net, it’s another point on the board and we’ve now got two important home games coming up.” Rovers now have back-to-back home games against Cheltenham Town and Notts County, and Ferguson says the players are determined to keep picking up points. “We have two big home games, and I’ve said to the players it’s going to be a few hard games coming up for us now,” he added. “I watched Cheltenham against Carlisle and they were outstanding, they absolutely battered them and they’ve beaten Luton as well.
ALCOCK HAPPY WITH CREATIVITY
FOUNDATION HELPS LOCAL SCHOOL WITH BIKE DONATION
Craig Alcock was impressed with the chances Rovers created despite being held to a goalless draw at Crawley Town. Rovers maintained their place at the top of the table and are four points clear of promotion rivals Plymouth Argyle with 11 games to go. But the defender was happy with a point and felt the side would have been on the wrong side of score line against Crawley last season. “We created a lot of chances, which is important but at the end of the day it’s disappointing and it’s important that we pick ourselves up,” said Alcock. “It was one of those days for us, I think the most important thing is we didn’t lose the game, and last season we would have done. “Thankfully we stuck at it and although 0-0 is not a fantastic result, it’s a point closer to where we want to be.” Alcock missed the first three months of the season after sustaining an injury to an ankle, he has played across the backline and now looks settled at leftback. “It was a disappointing start to the season for me with injuries in pre-season and I had to work hard to get back in, but that’s a testament to how good of a squad we have this season,” he added. “I don’t mind where I play as long as I am helping the team and we get the right result, that’s all that matter to be honest. “Niall Mason has been different class this season and he has shown how versatile he is by moving across the backline and now in midfield.”
Club Doncaster Foundation (CDF) was delighted to donate a bike to Outwood Academy Danum, helping them acknowledge their dedicated students. Every student with impeccable behaviour and 100 per cent attendance throughout the term was put into a prize draw to receive the bike, and victorious was Daniel Boyd, who was presented with the bike during assembly. The donation becomes the start of a blossoming partnership between the school and Club Doncaster Foundation, with the aim to increase attendance and behaviour while also promoting CDF’s bike library. In attendance to help present Daniel the bike was Councillor John Mounsey, who was delighted with the donation. He said: “I’m really grateful to Club Doncaster Foundation for buying and donating the bike because attendance is vital especially when you get to the latter stages of school life, the pupils really need to be in every day. “I’d like to think that this will now act as an incentive for the rest of the school to know that, not only are they bettering their education for being in every day but also they can be rewarded for it. “The bike library is a wonderful idea; to be able

“There will be no complacency against them that is for sure, we just need to kick on once again and keep up that unbeaten home record.”
to borrow a bike whenever you want for however long you want is fantastic – I hope the students take advantage of that.” Acting Principal, Jane Gaunt was also in attendance and hopes that the prize of a brand new mountain bike will inspire the rest of her students to improve their own attendance and behaviour. She said: ”It’s a great achievement to achieve 100% attendance so the students really do deserve to be recognised. “It’s been proven that a student can drop a grade for every 5% of dropped attendance and that can be the difference between getting into their preferred college and not.” She continued: “I think it’s a fantastic incentive because there’s quite a lot of depravation in this area so there might be cases where students can’t afford to buy a bike. “We have a real culture in the school of students coming on bikes so it makes a huge difference and I think now that they know about the bike library, a lot more will be using it more regularly.”
LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
March started as February ended in the County Senior League, with disruption once more from the storms we have seen locally over the past few weeks. However, despite the wet weather, eight games got the green light on the weekend, plus one midweek on Wednesday night. Premier Division There was just one game in the Premier Division, as it was already a short fixture list due to a few of the division’s teams being involved in Doncaster Senior Cup action. Danny Barnsley scored five times to help Jubilee Sports to a 9-2 home win against Millmoor Juniors. Lee Grocock also scored a hat-trick for Jubilee, who are up to fourth place. Division One League leaders Wickersley, were held to a 1-1 draw against Oughtibridge WMFC at the Oughtibridge War Memorial Ground. The draw follows Wickersley’s loss last week to second placed South Kirkby Colliery, who they lead by just one point. High Green Villa moved up to fourth position with their sixth win of 2017, as they beat Caribbean Sports 2-1 at the Thorncliffe FA Hub. Division Two North Dan White scored all three goals for FC Graceholme in their 3-1 away win over Bawtry Town. The win moves Graceholme into third. They are nine points off the pace, but the leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels Development have played four games more. Second placed Dodworth Miners Welfare closed the gap to leaders Stocksbridge to four points (with a game spare), as they drew 3-3 at home with Hepworth United. In midweek, Wombwell Main Development beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development 7-1 at Park Road. Division Two South Caribbean Sports Reserves moved into third place, after a convincing 4-1 win against Millmoor Juniors Development at Grange Park. WILDER’S ROCHDALE VERDICT 2016/17
Chris Wilder was happy to see the Blades leave Rochdale with a point, following a six-goal thriller at Spotland on Saturday. Early goals from Mark Duffy and Daniel Lafferty put the Blades in the driving seat against the run of play in Lancashire but Dale hit back to restore parity. Billy Sharp then netted his 24th of the season, but former United loanee Nathaniel Mendez-
Laing scored for the hosts to ensure the spoils were shared. And the Blades boss admitted his side were below par against Keith Hill’s side, remarking: “We pleased with a point and happy to keep the unbeaten run going, but disappointed with our defending. “We went 2-0 up inside 15 minutes but we weren’t at our best in a lot of respects and Rochdale to their credit played round us. “I’m honest and I
thought on the day Rochdale were better than us. We allowed some very good players the time and space to hurt us and they did. “They were better than us with and without the ball, but when you aren’t playing well you must dig in and be resilient and we were, that attitude earnt us a point. “We scored twice out of nothing really, we didn’t steam roller them. We had an issue with how they played
and we struggled throughout to get to grips.” Wilder added: “We had to change the system three or four times to try and get into the game, but ultimately we didn’t defend well enough to win the game. “We changed things at half-time because they were causing all sorts of problems down our left and I will always stand up and make those decisions. “Too many had off days and that’s
uncharacteristic. Basham was outstanding, but apart from that we weren’t great. “We had good
moments but we weren’t consistent enough. We want to be positive and we were, but in the end a point is a good result.”
HONOUR’S EVEN IN SIX GOAL THRILLER
As the season nears the final furlong, the entertainment value continues for Blades fans but only a point was collected at Rochdale. Mark Duffy, Daniel Lafferty and Billy Sharp’s 24th goal of the season put United on top but Rochdale battled for a point in front of 3,500 Unitedites. After the victory over Bolton in the last outing, boss Wilder named an unchanged starting line-up and substitutes’ bench. Rochdale’s team included three who have played for the Blades - McGahey, MendezLaing and Davies. On a heavily sanded pitch after recent rain, the first goalmouth action saw Moore collect a Rathbone
cross. It was, however, the home goalkeeper collecting the next entry into the box that paved the way for the opening goal - Wilson picked up Lund’s back-pass, gifting a free-kick to United inside the box. Rochdale provided a big wall but Coutts laid off for DUFFY to curl into the corner of the net. Duffy was involved in United’s second goal, moments later, in a frenetic start. He got the better of Cannon and drew a free-kick. Fleck’s delivery was half-cleared to 30-yards from goal where LAFFERTY was waiting to hammer back, the ball drifting away from the goalkeeper and into the top corner. Rochdale hit back with a couple of corners,
McGahey headed one over, before another ex Blade pulled a goal back on 20 minutes. Lund’s cross was bundled in at the back post by DAVIES. The early pace subsided with the game settling into a tough battle. From another freekick won by Duffy, Rochdale again halfcleared but this time Coutts could only find Wilson’s gloves and the goalkeeper then saved an O’Connell header. For the home side, Mendez-Laing’s pace was causing problems. As half-time approached, it remained tense and tight, the only opportunity of note was another Lafferty shot, which was on target but blocked. The Blades made a half-time substitution,
Carruthers on for O’Connell, which prompted a change in formation but within two minutes of the restart, the home side were level. A move began on the right but Cannon recycled on the left and LUND swept the ball before Moore could react. Before the hour United made another change, Ebanks-Landell taking over from Hanson, who picked up a knock moments earlier, forcing Wilder to alter his system again. The change coincided with United getting back on top, although the home defence were proving tough to break down. A couple of corners put Rochdale under pressure before the lead was regained on 69 minutes. Basham
attacked down left and his cross was just too high for EbanksLandell but SHARP was positioned at the back post to fire home, despite the efforts of a defender on the line. Soon after EbanksLandell almost turned in a Coutts cross but Rochdale remained a threat and Wright was forced to clear as Vincenti was ready to pounce on a Rathbone cross. Rochdale dragged themselves level once more on 78 minutes. Rathbone’s deep cross picked out MENDEZLAING, who cut inside both Lafferty and Wright before firing past Moore. Moments later, Moore produced a tremendous save to keep United level, dropping to
his right to keep out Henderson’s header from a Noble Lazarus cross. The final ten minutes saw both sides keen to win the game, rather than settle for a point each. On 87 minutes, a free-kick routine saw Fleck and Coutts have touches before Lafferty’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper’s body. Two minutes later, a referee’s advantage saw the ball break to Henderson in the box but EbanksLandell made a timely tackle. Three minutes of injury-time again saw both sides looking to push forward but there were no further chances in a high-energy end to the fixture.
CHAPMAN RETURNS FOR RUN-IN WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
Harry Chapman is set to return to the Sheffield United fold following an injury lay-off that began at the start of December. The 19-yearold damaged a membrane in his ankle, and returned
to Middlesbrough for treatment. After a poor performance on Saturday against Rochdale, Wilder will be glad to have the pacey winger available for selection. Chapman competed 69 minutes on
Monday for the Under 23’s, providing an assist in the process, as the young Blades were defeated 2-1 at the hands of Bolton Wanderers. The Boro-loanee could provide the impetus of a new signing, having not featured in red and white for so long. The Blades were lucky to take a point away from Spotland, having only shown flashes of what we all know they are capable of. Billy Sharp was isolated and rarely had a touch, his only impact in the game coming in typical fashion, a goal in the 68th minute. United were dominated in midfield, a sight
which Blades fans haven’t seen all too often this season. The answer to this was to chop and change throughout the match, Samir Carruthers was introduced but failed to have the impact witnessed against Bolton. Caolan Lavery was introduced in the 84th minute, and hardly touched the ball as the Dale pushed for a winner. Chapman is a unique option for Wilder, the squad is rich with creative midfielders, but is without a plethora of options out wide. United’s attack at Rochdale was very narrow, not helped by a tight pitch, but spaces were available
for Wilder’s side to exploit. With only 11 games to go before the end of the season, a fit Chapman could
be the difference in tough games against sides such as Millwall, Charlton and Bradford.

ALL ABOUT THE TEAM - CARLOS Carlos Carvalhal hailed the whole team performance as the Owls racked up a 5-1 win over Norwich at Hillsborough. While journalists quizzed the head coach on individual displays in the post-match press conference, Carvalhal emphasised the value of everyone playing their part. He said: “I do not want
to talk about individuals because this was all about the team. “Every single player did so well and so for me, that was our best performance in terms of the goals we have scored. “We have played other very good team performances, such as twice against Huddersfield, at Newcastle, Aston Villa
to name some, but today the goals went in and we are happy. “We were very good all over the pitch. Keiren Westwood was solid, the defence was solid, the midfield was very, very good and the strikers worked for absolutely everything.” Carvalhal went on to praise the supporters, who he feels also produced an impressive
performance. The boss explained: “This was our best performance and I think it was the best performance by our fans too. “The atmosphere was fantastic and for that, we say thank you. “We have six games left to play at Hillsborough and this is what we need, so much positive energy.”
FOX DELIGHTED FOR THE FANS Owls left back Morgan Fox scored his first goal for the club at a key moment in the 5-1 victory over Norwich on Saturday. Wednesday were off to a flyer against the Canaries at Hillsborough and were two goals to the good inside 22 minutes. That lead was cut in half on 38 minutes but the Owls’ response was swift, as Fox muscled past his marker to head home his first goal, sending the hosts into the interval 3-1 ahead. “It felt really good,” he told swfc.co.uk.
“I don’t get many so it was a bit of a collector’s item but the most important thing was we got the win. “I knew I was going to get my head on it but I didn’t see it go in, there were a few bodies back there.
“We wanted to start the game brightly, we put them on the back foot from the first minute and it’s good for the team to get a few goals as well. “I’m delighted we gave the fans a few goals to celebrate.”
Wednesday are back in action at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening against Burton Albion and Fox continued: “That’s five wins now from our last seven games and we have a great result to build on.”
