LOVE HISTORY, LOVE DONCASTER HERITAGE FESTIVAL Time Team archaeologist Professor Carenza Lewis is set to bring history to life at the seventh annual Doncaster Heritage Festival. She will be speaking about the plague and public archaeology at Doncaster Museum on Tuesday 2 May. Doncaster Heritage Services have organised a packed, heritagethemed programme of events, talks, walks and workshops with some exhibitions remaining open after the end of the festival to give people more time to see them. Plans to uncover some of Sheffield’s rich riverside history at Castlegate are moving forward thanks to new funding from the Environment Agency. The Environment Agency has awarded Sheffield City Council £50,000 funding to develop designs for Sheaf Field,

with Sheffield Council to progress the River Sheaf project. “This project will reopen the hidden underground section of the River Sheaf where it joins the River Don at Castlegate and will restore the Sheaf to its’ rightful place at the heart of Sheffield.” The Castlegate site has a long history – it’s where Sheffield began and where it got it’s name – from the Norman Sheffield Castle, the likely imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots, through centuries of markets, industry, the first purpose-built Town Hall and courts to the blitz and more recent Castle Markets constructed in the 1950s.

It needs to be repaired or removed. Joanne Briddock, catchment co-ordinator for the Environment Agency, said: “The Environment Agency is working in partnership

Local Red Cross volunteers help reduce loneliness in South Yorkshire Over nine million people in the UK report they are always or often alone, but the British Red Cross are helping to reduce this in Rotherham. People report feeling lonely due to life changes such as, retirement, divorce, or bereavement and are often left vulnerable in their own home. The Rotherham Befriending Service provided by the British Red Cross, relies on the time and commitment of local volunteers. They visit clients on a 1-2-1 basis to help them fit back into society by making friends and building confidence. Over time this takes pressure off public services such as the NHS, as the users are less likely to rely on Emergency services. It has been proven that by taking a gentler approach to loneliness and depression clients are less likely to rely on the NHS and emergency services, as this stops the loneliness and social isolation growing into a serious chronic illness. (Sheffield Hall University CRESR Evaluation Report – January 2016) Tom Chapman, 35, who has been a befriending volunteer since September 2016 said: ‘The role has changed me in that I’m now slower to judge and quicker to help’. He describes this as a key characteristic, which is essential in local communities when people need support from others. ‘As you meet and support more people you start to notice that you have far more in common

than you’d generally realise. As humans we often just notice how other people are different to us, but this role gives you the opportunity to see beyond those details, to the humanity which connects us all’. One of Mr Chapman’s clients, Kevin Hackett, has benefited from the befriending service by reducing his social anxiety and boosting his confidence. ‘Initially I spent time listening to Kevin, building a rapport and discovering what types of things he felt would benefit him’. ‘We decided to try an Active Always exercise class. I would pick him up and participate in the class with him, until he was confident enough to arrange his own transport and go by himself’. ‘As a way to support his anxiety I helped him attend a Radiance and Relaxation class, which he enjoyed. I have supported Kevin in many ways, each unique to his needs and situation’. When interviewing Mr Hackett about his experience of the befriending service he said: ‘I think the British Red Cross is excellent. I would encourage people to volunteer and be confident to help other people. Their confidence will grow just like mine has within the last 10 visits from Tom’. The befriending service mutually benefits clients and volunteers improving their communications and social interaction. Mr Hackett’s mobility and confidence have improved and his anxiety reduced.

Although volunteering can be very rewarding, many people are worried about giving their time to volunteering. Often the reason people give for this is a perceived lack of time. However, being a befriending volunteer can fit around other commitments. Volunteers have one client at a time and visit them once a week. ‘The Red Cross are very flexible and accommodating’ Mr Chapman reassured. It can be dangerous to live alone, especially when socially isolated. Mr Chapman recounts one of his most memorable days as a befriending volunteer when an elderly woman would have been left injured, and alone, in her home if not for his weekly visit. ‘I had been visiting an older lady who did not have any family or friends, so I was her only visitor. Unfortunately, she’d fallen in her house and had been on the floor for a very long time, unable to move or call for help. Because of my visit, I was able to call her an ambulance and also make sure that extra support was available in the future’. ‘Being a befriending volunteer may just restore your faith in humanity! It gives you the unique opportunity to give support in a time of crisis’. If you think you would like to be a befriending volunteer and help improve, and possibly save, someone’s life then contact Janet Stocks on 0114 242 7376, or email JStocks@redcross.org.uk

75% OF OLDER PEOPLE ARE LONELY LOVE SPORT? Almost three-quarters of older people in the UK are lonely and more than half of those have never spoken to anyone about how they feel, according to a survey carried out for the Jo Cox commision on loneliness. The poll by Gransnet, the over-50s social networking site, also found that about seven in 10 (71%) respondents – average age 63 – said their close friends and family would be surprised or astonished to hear that they felt lonely. Gransnet is one of nine organisations – including Age UK, the Alzheimer’s Society and the Silver Line helpline for older people – working to address the issue of loneliness in older people, which is the current focus of the commission, set up by Cox before her murder last June. They are urging individuals and businesses to look for signs of loneliness and refer people to organisations that can help. But they also want people to take time to speak to neighbours, family, old friends or those they encounter randomly. “We all need to act and encourage older people to freely talk about their loneliness,” they said. “Everyone can play a part in ending loneliness among older people in their communities by simply starting a conversation with those around you. How we care and act for those around us could mean the difference between an older person just coping, to them loving and enjoying later life.” Almost half (49%) of the 73% who described themselves as lonely in the online poll said they had been so for years, 11% said they had always felt lonely and 56% said they had never spoken about their loneliness to anyone. Laura Alcock-Ferguson, the executive director of the Campaign to End Loneliness – another organisation working with the commission – said the percentage of lonely older people had stayed the same for five decades, but an ageing population meant the number was increasing in absolute terms. Common trigger events said to have contributed to feelings of loneliness were bereavement, retirement and children leaving home. Being shy, living alone or far from family and low income were other commonly cited contributory factors.

PRESCRIPTION CHARGES SET TO RISE IN APRIL

From 1st April the prescription charge will increase by 20 pence from £8.40 to £8.60 for each medicine or appliance dispensed. The cost of the prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) for another year has been frozen. So if you have to pay you can save money by having a prepayment certificate. The 3 month PPC remains at £29.10 and the cost of the annual PPC will stay at £104, allowing unlimited prescriptions.

The rise of social networking to the detriment of face-to-face interaction has been blamed for contributing to an “epidemic” of loneliness, but the survey of just over 1,000 people found it could also offer solace. Loneliness is a hazard of old age. A phone call can mean a lot | Michele Hanson Almost three in five respondents (59%) said social media helped people feel less lonely and about eight in 10 (82%) said talking about loneliness was much easier when anonymous and online. While the results indicate the potential benefits of online interaction, the older people are the less likely they are to have access to the internet, particularly women. The commission is encouraging supporters and followers to post #happytochat on social media to create discussion around loneliness and for people to wear badges with the same slogan. Ultimately, they hope some customer-facing organisations will encourage their staff to wear the badges. Respondents highlighted greater public awareness - a key goal of the commission – as the best way to combat loneliness. Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, said: “There are reasons to believe that we can all do something to change things for the better: a simple thing like saying hello and having a chat can brighten up an older person’s day and do more good than most of us would ever guess.” In coming months the commission will focus on loneliness in other groups, including men, people with disabilities, carers, refugees, children and parents.

Any man aged 50+ would be very welcome to join the group at any point, just drop in and say hello.” The format of the groups will be flexible, depending on the interests of the men who come along. OWLS BACK RAINBOW ROCKS Sheffield Wednesday are backing Worksopbased charity JOEL – The Complete Package, and their Rainbow Rocks campaign, which is bidding to win £50,000 of Lottery funding in the People’s Project. The People’s Projects is a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund, ITV, STV and The National Lottery that gives the public a say in awarding Lottery funding to local projects across the UK. Since 2005, around £36m has been awarded through the initiative to 770 good causes. JOEL was founded in 2012, becoming a registered charity in 2014, and supports families through pregnancy and parenting after experiencing the loss of a baby, through support groups, relaxations classes, playdates for families and much more. It’s from here the term ‘rainbow baby’ was born, which refers to a baby born following

a miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death or infant loss. Team JOEL is now a committee of nine members who are committed to raising awareness and providing support for families. Owls right back and ambassador for the charity Liam Palmer said: “It is a fantastic charity, my mum works very closely with them and the work they do is amazing. “The expertise, help and happiness they can bring to families at such a sad time is vital.” Five projects in each region have now been put forward to the public vote, which will decide where the National Lottery funding will go. If you would like to register your support for JOEL and their Rainbow Rocks campaign please visit www.thepeoplesprojects.org.uk/projects/view/ rainbow-rocks

Whether it’s about church or chocolate, South Yorkshire and the rest of the country are getting ready for Easter. Who would ever have imagined that Jesus and chocolate eggs would come to be associated with the same event? However you choose to celebrate the moveable feast, we’ve got it cracked. Here’s 18 fascinating facts about Easter: 1. Every child in the UK receives an average of 8.8 Easter eggs every

year – double their recommended calorie intake for a whole week. 2. The largest ever Easter egg hunt was in Florida, where 9,753 children searched for 501,000 eggs. 3. In 2007, an Easter egg covered in diamonds sold for almost £9 million. Every hour, a cockerel made of jewels pops up from the top of the Faberge egg, flaps its wings four times, nods its head three times and makes a crowing noise. The gold-and-pink

enamel egg was made by the Russian royal family as an engagement gift for French aristocrat Baron Edouard de Rothschild. 4. When people gorge on a chocolate Easter bunny, 76 per cent bite off the ears first, 5 per cent go for the feet and 4 per cent opt for the tail. 5. With all those chocolate eggs for family, relatives, loved ones and friends, it should be no surprise that households spend an average of £75 on Easter treats each year. 6. In the USA, 90 million

chocolate bunnies and 91.4 billion eggs are produced each year. At Easter, Americans also consume more than 16 million jellybeans used to fill the hollow centre of Easter eggs, and that’s enough to circle the globe three times over. 7. The White House hosts an Easter Egg Roll on the front lawn each year. This tradition was started by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878. 8. Sales at Easter time make up 10 per cent of UK chocolate spending for the whole year. 9. The UK’s first chocolate egg was produced in 1873 by Fry’s of Bristol. 10. The tallest chocolate Easter egg was made in Italy in 2011. Standing 10.39 metres tall and weighing 7,200 kg, it was taller than a giraffe and heavier than an elephant. But Portugal is the home of the largest decorated Easter egg, which reached almost 15m in height and 8m in diameter when it was made in 2008. 11. In 2012, London hosted the world’s biggest-ever Easter egg hunt.

12. The world’s most popular egg-shaped chocolate is Cadbury’s Creme Egg. Workers at Cadbury in Birmingham produce 1.5 million of these every day. 13. On Easter Sunday in Scotland and North-East England, some people have great fun rolling painted eggs down steep hills. This is also popular in parts of America, where people push the egg along with a spoon.

WIN TICKETS TO SEE EX-GENESIS ROCK LEGEND STEVE HACKETT Guitar virtuoso and rock legend, Steve Hackett (formerly of Genesis), released his latest album The Night Siren on 24th March 2017 through InsideOut Music (Sony). As implied in the title, The Night Siren is a wake-up call… the warning of a siren sounding in this era of strife and division. Steve Hackett also returns to the UK with an exciting new show: Genesis Revisited with Classic Hackett for 15-dates in April & May, calling in at Sheffield City Hall on Wednesday 3rd May. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the classic Genesis album Wind and Wuthering, Steve and his band will be performing several tracks from the album as well as fan favourites such as ‘The Musical Box’ and other Genesis numbers never performed before by Steve's band including ‘Inside & Out,’ ‘One For The Vine’ and ‘Anyway’ as well as material from The Night Siren.

The Night Siren showcases Steve’s incredible guitar playing as strongly as ever, along with regular Hackett collaborators and also musicians from several different countries who Steve invited to join him in celebrating multicultural diversity and unity. This includes singers from Israel and Palestine, who both actively campaign to bring Jewish and Arabic people together. There are also instrumentals from the USA and Iraq and a multiplicity of sounds, including the exotic strains of Indian sitar and Middle Eastern tar and oud, the ethnic beauty of the Peruvian charango and the haunting Celtic Uilleann pipes. Steve is widely travelled, making friends everywhere he goes and has always embraced multicultural diversity. In these times of unrest, he has been inspired to express his belief that the world needs more empathy and unity. His wish to involve a range of musical sounds, instruments, musicians and singers from different parts of the world is both a development of his eclectic approach to music and shows how people can be brought together, even from war torn regions. Talking about his latest work, Steve says, “This latest waxing represents a bird’s eye view of the world of a musical migrant ignoring borders and celebrating our common ancestry with a unity of spirit, featuring musicians, singers and instruments from all over the world. From territorial frontiers to walled-up gateways, boundaries often hold back the tide. But while the night siren wails, music breaches all defences. To quote Plato, ‘When the music changes, the walls of the city shake’.” The musical journey takes us from ‘Behind the Smoke’, focusing on the plight of refugees throughout the ages, to the penultimate track ‘West

SCARBOROUGH OPEN AIR THEATRE - DISCOVER LIVE MUSIC AND MORE ON THE YORKSHIRE COAST! There’s a real buzz about Scarborough Open Air Theatre this year, not only is it Europe’s largest open air theatre but the 2017 line up is jam packed! With a stage on the lake continuing to play host to some of the biggest names in the music industry, you’re certain to be blown away. The 2017 season welcomes The Beach Boys, Kaiser Chiefs, The Charlatans, Michael Ball & Alfie Boe, Cliff Richard, UB40, George Benson, Tom Jones, Little Mix, Olly Murs, Madness, 80’s V 90’s and Jess Glynne – plus more to be announced!

Scarborough Open Air Theatre is perfect if you like your music accompanied by gentle sea breezes on a summer’s evening. Sitting within yards of Scarborough’s North Bay Beach, with a capacity of over 7,000, the Open Air Theatre gives a new and vibrant experience for those who love to see their favourite acts performing live. The theatre first opened in the 1930s entertaining thousands each night, since then it has undergone major refurbishment, and on 20 May 2010 the theatre was officially reopened by Her Majesty, The Queen. Since then it has played host to some of the music industry’s biggest stars, including Elton John, Jessie J, James Bay and Bryan Adams. Keep the summer vibes flowing and let the Yorkshire Coast and North York Moors be the

backdrop to your family holiday. Discover a special Yorkshire welcome brimming with lots to see and do - the coast meets the countryside with a landscape and activities to suit all ages, interest and budgets. Home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK – with coastline stretching 97 miles and a National Park spanning over 544 square miles, it’s easy to see why the Yorkshire Coast is the second most visited destination outside of London. Relax and have fun with a host of great indoor and outdoor activities – enjoy magnificent coastal walks, Whale watching, swimming, surfing, flying kites, rock-pooling, fossil hunts and dinosaur walks. Explore the rich heritage and culture of the region with museums, art galleries and events including the Tour de Yorkshire, Seafest Scarborough, Whitby Goth Festivals and Filey Food Festival. Or you can simply do nothing - take leisurely walks along the beach and stroll through the National Park, savour delicious local dishes, explore the varied independent local shops and of course enjoy an ice cream (or two). You won’t have any trouble finding somewhere

Against a dynamic soundscape of 80s dance music, the stories of a group of friends living through the Edinburgh heroin scene - Renton, Tommy, Sick Boy, Begbie and Alison - are brought to life with humour, poetry and provocatively graphic scenes. Directed by Kings Head Theatre artistic director Adam Spreadbury-Maher in collaboration with Greg Esplin – the tour follows an eleven-week run at the Vaults and two sold-out seasons at the King’s Head Theatre. snagged! A morning wasted? Probably, but I’m never sure if baits are snagged on the cast (I hadn’t moved it at all when tightening with Clint Walker up), or simply get stuck when moved on the I’ve come back down to earth with a bump retrieve; without going in to see, it’s very this week, having suffered a resounding, difficult to tell…(unless, of course, you own painful blank; of course, that’s not my an underwater camera, or are an accomplished fault, it’s the venue, and not a reflection diver). I changed to a method feeder, buried of my own mediocre talents… (isn’t that the hookbait within, and lobbed it back out always the way? It’s always the venue that’s a few yards. Hopefully, this one would get rubbish? Not me? I’m sure I’ve heard that?) through before the hook point fouled anything. Anyway, back to reality… The venue in The second rod was also ensnared in bottom question is one I’ve fished only once before, debris, and like the first, probably had been all some years ago, when I managed to capture a morning. Again, the rig was changed, and this solitary mid-double, and I’ve never been back rod was dropped into the margins to my right, until this week. Why? For a number of reasons; in an area I could see was relatively (but not it’s thirty miles from my house for one, it’s completely) clear of weed. The third rod, over also now on a premium ticket, meaning I have the particles, was left as I was happy with the to pay more, and it’s blummin’ hard work, especially in March, when sitting in an easterly position. The wind picked up, a bitingly cold easterly, but as I was still in the sunshine, I wind! So why go back? In the words of Barry Chuckle, “…because it’s there” (at least I think chose to stay put… Other anglers were also fishless, and were it was him) and I want to up my game, and using similar tactics to try and blast a hole in learn to fish somewhere different. the weed. The tangled underwater stems of the The pool is a square of water, filled with a lilies were like the barbed wire of First World large island, so the remainder takes on the War trench systems; impassable, impenetrable, appearance of a large canal. It’s packed with and would snare anything put near them, but lilies, which sprout as soon as sun hits the there were just so many… Finding a clear spot water, and they cover huge swathes of the was more luck than judgement, the narrowness available surface; there are more lilies than of the waterway precluded any attempts to water. Beneath them, underwater ‘cabbages’ drag a lead through it, and any clear spot was spring up a couple of feet, and below that, pondweed and silkweed proliferate. It’s also likely to be centimetres in diameter; a tough gin clear, with very little in the way of clear task indeed… spots, so getting presentation right is essential; As the afternoon dragged on, I still hadn’t hence my reason to visit… I’d like to learn heard a single indication from my alarms, or how to fish this challenging water, which is those of other anglers nearby, and as the sun home to some beautifully marked carp, and started to drop, I decided to pack up and head occasional big tench, so this week, I set forth… home. Thankfully, when retrieved this time, I arrived early, before the sun, and left the all three rigs were in the clear, so at least they van to trudge the perimeter in sheeting rain. had been fishing effectively for part of the In the half light, I saw no sign of any fish, but day, but I still hadn’t caught. During a day plenty of waterfowl, angrily screeching at my session, there are only so many options given presence, and the odd rabbit shot out of the the limited time, but I’m not a ‘bank tramp’, undergrowth at my approach. There were no I don’t do overnight sessions, and fit in my signs of anglers in many of the pegs either; fishing when I can, so next time will undertake all were pristine, with only one showing any a different approach. I can imagine many signs of preceding muddy boots, and it was readers will be thinking “…should’ve done in a spot I fancied, and one in which I knew that, should’ve done this” and I will, next time. a carp had been trapped the previous day. In I’ll try a zig rig, or a floater, or a chod, or even those early hours, the wind came from the a float, with a worm suspended below, and I’ll North-East, the sun would rise in the usual enjoy it too, because even though I didn’t get spot, and that corner looked to get the best my nets wet, I still met new friends, had a chat of the weather. Earlier in the week, as I’d with likeminded anglers, and enjoyed some walked my Labrador, I glanced (as usual) spring sunshine. I’ve also added a bit more to over the neighbour’s wall to see what her koi were doing. In the smidgen of sunlight, which my ‘experience’ tally, which means that next time, some options can be discarded, and my cast across one small corner, all the fish were chance of success will improve… which is stacked up seeking the warm rays; surely this what it’s all about isn’t it? pond would be the same? I opted for a three rod attack. One to be fished over a bed of mixed particles, a popped up 12mm bait attached, which was deposited against some marginal sedges. Trap One. The second, a bottom bait, was pricked into a pva mesh bag of matching boilies, and cast out to the corner of the island. Trap Two. The third, another small pop up, this time a bright yellow one, was pulled through a pva stick of crumbed boilies, and cast into the deepest part of the channel, where the sun would hit first. Trap Three. HAVE YOU NOMINATED YOUR GRASS ROOTS HERO YET? There is still time to for you to nominate the person or club you think deserves an award for the work that they do. Looking this year’s number of nominations so far in the Sheffield & Hallamshire CFA area we are still wanting and hoping for more entries, particularly for the • Charter Standard Club • Charter Standard Development Club • Charter Standard Community Club • and the Best Inclusive Project So if you think your club deserves to be recognised – and yes you can nominate your own club - then please visit the website at www.mcdonalds.co.uk/awards. …… and, of course there is still time to make nominations for the other categories. McDonald’s is the longest standing supporter of grassroots football in the UK and continues to champion those who enable children and young adults to play and enjoy football regardless of gender or disability. McDonald’s Head of English Football, former Arsenal defender, Martin Keown said: “Anyone can be nominated for an award; from coaches and caretakers to club secretaries and fund raisers, anyone whose selflessness and commitment allows children to enjoy grassroots football in a safe, friendly and welcoming environment and without discrimination.” McDonald’s is a long term partner of the FA during which time thousands of grassroots clubs have benefitted. This support has encapsulated all facets of keeping the beautiful game going, from training football coaches and running community football days, to equipping the UK’s 5000+ FA accredited football clubs with brand new kit annually, and is on track to donate its 250,000th kit this year. Kelly Simmons, Football Participation and Development Director at the FA adds: “McDonald’s has supported grassroots football in partnership with The FA for the last 15 years. Over that time McDonald’s has become an integral part of growing the game for boys and girls all around the country.” The awards, which take place in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, have eight categories including the People’s Award, which is voted for the by the public, and in England has two awards new for 2017 – Coach of the Year and Best Inclusive Programme. Nominations for The FA, FAW, Scottish FA and IFA Community Awards, presented by McDonald’s, are now open. To nominate a grassroots football club or volunteer go to www.mcdonalds.co.uk/awards

RICHARD EDGING CLOSER TO RETURN LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

Goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell is targeting a return to first-team action after being given the green light to start training. A finger injury sustained in the warm-up during the recent Championship fixture with Brentford has ruled the former Bristol City stopper out of action in recent weeks, but the January signing is now stepping up progress in a bid for a quick return to action. “It has been nice to get the gloves back on to be fair,” Richard told www.themillers.co.uk “It hasn’t been great sitting and watching the other guys train. When you injure a finger it is obviously a frustrating injury for a goalkeeper. I have just started back training, it is still a little sore which is to be expected, but I am ahead of schedule which is where I want to be. “There is no bigger test than training, you

probably have more to do in training than you do in a game to be honest. It is feeling pretty strong, I still feel it a little from time to time but it is getting stronger and with the international break coming up, it is a chance for me to really make some more progress.” O’Donnell has made seven appearances for the Millers since joining from Bristol City, making his debut at St. James’ Park in the defeat to Newcastle. The former Wigan stopper is now relishing the battle with Lewis Price for the number one jersey, something the Millers have been denied so far with both ‘keepers suffering injury in the last few months. “It has been strange for one reason or another that we both haven’t been available,” Richard confirmed.

“The game against Brentford would have been the first game but then obviously I got injured in the warm up. “It is good to have competition all over the pitch, and goalkeeping is no different. I get on really well with Pricey, and I am sure that we will both enjoy the competition.”

on and off the pitch, and will now be supported by comedian John Lory. John’s huge talent as a funny man has taken him on engagements all over the world, whilst writing with and working alongside some of the biggest names in the industry. With tailor-made material delivered in his own imitable style, has become one of the most sought after comedians on the sporting dinner circuit today. Simply put, John is a very funny man, and anyone who has seen him will agree that it is his sheer force of personality and audience contact that makes him quite literally, ‘the face of comedy today’. Dinner is served at 7:30pm on the night and consists of a three course meal .

The uptake amongst supporters has been good since the event was initially advertised but it’s not too late to book your place in the lounge for what promises to be an entertaining and interesting evening. Sonny Bradley’s header won the game for the “Do I have to pick the players up? I don’t think visitors. too much as I think they played really well, “We absolutely annihilated them, the team in and that is important, not as important as the second and we should have won by three or result but they know that they have played well four that’s a simple stat but it’s about winning too. and it’s as simple as that,” said Ferguson “We go to Grimsby next and we have sold out “We dominated the game, we knew we would our allocation, the fans were great once and the dominate possession and I felt we were very one thing we have always done well is react to good, but unlike us we couldn’t convert any of the four incredible chances that we had in a defeat.”

LUKE HAPPY McCULLOUGH AT RETURN Luke McCullough was happy to be back out on the pitch as his long spell out through injury came to an end against Plymouth Argyle. The 23-year-old came on as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat at the Keepmoat Stadium, and says that despite the result, it was pleasing to be back playing with his team-mates after eight months out. “Different people react differently to the injury and the rehab, I’ve worked hard in my recovery and luckily enough managed to come back sooner than expected,” he said. “It has been a long journey for me but it all went to plan, it is part of the game so I’ve tried

to be positive about it and embrace it a little bit. “It felt nice to get back out there, my knee is fine I just need to work on match fitness, I’m sure that will come with the more time I get on the pitch.” Rovers unbeaten home league run was ended by Sonny Bradley’s second half winner, but McCullough felt his side had enough chances to win the game over the course of 90 minutes. “It’s clear that we deserved to win, if we’d scored in the first half then I think it would have been a completely different match,” he added. “If you miss that many chances then you’re always vulnerable at the other end and once they scored it was tough for us to get back into it. “It doesn’t change much for us, the main target at the start of the season was to get promoted so we want to secure that first and then we’ll focus on winning the title.”

The weekend brought some lovely spring weather to the region and it was not just the sun warming us up, as we had a very significant week in the County Senior League. We had two league titles decided and the League Cup final line-up confirmed this week.

League Cup Semi-Final Midweek, the second League Cup Semi-Final took place, with Athersley Recreation Reserves taking on Brinsworth Whitehill of the First Division. The game ended 0-0 after 120 minutes, but with Brinsworth prevailing as winners 11-10 after a tense penalty shootout. Brinsworth will take on Swallownest FC in the Final at Penistone on 20th April. Premier Division Swallownest FC claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wombwell Main at Rockingham Community Centre to clinch the Premier Division championship. Swallownest now have an unassailable 13 point lead over second placed and defending champions Frecheville. Swallownest have been formidable this term, with 21 wins from 24 games and future League Cup Final to look forward to. Fourth placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves put pressure on third placed Swinton Athletic, as they beat 2-1 at the Look Local stadium. Stocksbridge are four points behind Swinton, with four games remaining. Handsworth Parramore Reserves ended a run of three games without a goal, as they beat struggling Denaby Main 2-0 at Tickhill Square. Tom Tully and Sam Garforth were both on target for Houghton Main, as they beat Jubilee Sports 2-0 at Chaucer School. Goals from Matt Blakey (2) and Zac Harper gave North Gawber Colliery a 3-2 win over Denaby United. Division One Everything is to play for Division One, as league leaders South Kirkby Colliery slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against fourth bottom Silkstone United. League Cup Finalists Brinsworth Whitehill midweek exploits may have got the best of them, as they fell to a 4-1 home loss to Oughtibridge WMFC on Saturday. Tom Fletcher (2), Chaz Tunnard and Josh Coulson were all on target for Oughtibridge, who remain third placed, four points off the lead. Goals from Stevie Bennett and Neil Johnson gave Grimethorpe Sports a 2-1 against Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Grimethorpe climb above Ecclesfield into fourth position, five points off the pace. Caribbean Sports ended a run of three games without a win, with a 3-2 victory over Sheffield Bankers at the Caribbean Sports Club. Division Two North The top two in the Division Two North were both not in action, so Euroglaze FC had the opportunity to go within five points of leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels Development. Euroglaze took that opportunity, as goals from Daniel Henighan and Brendan Doyle (2) gave them a 3-2 win against FC Graceholme. Hepworth United are just a further point back, after their 3-1 win against Houghton Main Reserves at Middlecliffe Lane on Saturday. Wombwell Main Development made it three wins from their last four games, with a 4-0 home win against Working Wonders. Division Two South Sheffield Medics clinched the Division Two South title with three games spare, as they beat Millmoor Juniors Development 7-1 at Norton Playing Fields. The Medics have had an excellent first season in the County Senior, having also reached the League Cup Semi-Final stage, where they were beaten by Swallownest FC 1-0. The line-up for the play-offs still remain unclear, after fourth placed Kiveton Park and second placed Caribbean Sports Reserves drew 1-1 at Kiveton Park Miners Welfare Ground. Just a point separate Caribbean in second place and Davy FC Reserves in fifth position. Maltby Main Reserves continued their good form, with a third consecutive win. This time they were 4-2 winners away against Sheffield Lane Top.

WILDER’S OLDHAM VERDICT 2016/17 Chris Wilder was adamant Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Oldham Athletic was a point gained. Jay O’Shea’s equaliser early in the second-half saw United claim a share of the spoils after Tope Obadeyi had fired the Latics in front. Reflecting on the stalemate on a testing playing surface at SportsDirect. com Park, Wilder remarked: “A battling point would be the best description of

that game. There wasn’t much football played that’s for sure. “Oldham booted it better than us first-half, we booted it better than them second-half, a draw was a fair result from what we knew would be a very tough game. “We understood the conditions, we said that wouldn’t be an excuse and it was the same for both sides. John (Sheridan) is a good friend of mine and his players always make excellent footballing sides, so

it’ll be frustrating for him too.” After seeing his side extend the current unbeaten run to 10 matches, the Blades boss added: “We had to adjust and we got ourselves back into the game. This isn’t two points dropped, nobody should feel down, we are accumulating points and I believe this will be a very important point in the final reckoning. “We can never be called negative and we weren’t

despite the state of the pitch, we made attacking substitutions throughout, even right

at the death. “Oldham, especially at home, don’t give anything away and

I’m glad we leave with our current run extended by a further game.”

BLADES MAKE IT TEN UNBEATEN League leaders Blades made it ten unbeaten with a battling display in tough conditions at Oldham. Jay O’Shea’s goal just after the break cancelled out Tope Obadeyi’s first half strike. Wilder made three changes for the trip across the Pennines - Wright, Done and O’Shea all came in. Coutts dropped to the bench, Duffy missed out with a back injury and Lafferty was unavailable due to international duty with Northern Ireland. Oldham’s teamsheet saw Blades old boy Flynn on the bench. A bare pitch was always going to be a factor in the game and United began with Done at left wingback and Basham in

midfield. The home side settled quicker, they won three corners inside the opening ten minutes and O’Connell deflected an Obadeyi shot wide. United hit back with a couple of corners and a Hanson came close to attaching himself to crosses from Done and O’Shea, the latter saw goalkeeper Ripley get a vital touch. On 31 minutes Erwin’s deep cross saw Law head over after rising above Done and Oldham were enjoying territorial advantage, which paved the way to them opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time. Ebanks-Landell surrendered possession and Oldham moved the

ball from left to right where Law’s cross was perfect for OBADEYI to touch home from close range. The first chance of the second period also went Oldham’s way but Erwin’s flicked header from Taylor’s cross was just wide and then United netted with the first chance on target. Hanson challenged as a cross from right was whipped in and the ball dropped for O’SHEA to steer a half-volley into the bottom corner of Ripley’s net Chances were exchanged with Fane shooting wide and O’Connell heading over a corner, whilst Moore was well placed as Erwin shot into the sidenetting just after the hour.

Coutts and Lavery were introduced, either side of an Oldham effort which saw Moore turn a dangerous Fane cross around a post. As the final ten minutes approached Hanson connected with a deep O’Connell cross but headed wide. Freeman and Coutts

linked up to present a chance for Sharp but the skipper fired over on 86 minutes and soon after a Freeman cross saw Hanson head down but efforts from both Sharp and Lavery were blocked. Lavery was injured in the move and replaced by Clarke just ahead of four minutes of

added time being announced. In injury-time, from a Coutts cross, Sharp’s header was saved by Ripley and the added time was extended as a number of Oldham players needed treatment but a point each was the result after a tough battle.

Billy Sharp and John Fleck are both in the running to be named Player of the Season in Sky Bet League One. They are joined by Scunthorpe’s Josh Morris, to complete the shortlist of three. Both Blades are worthy of the award, but one would predict it will end up on the United’s captains mantelpiece come the end of the season. Sharp is singlehandedly firing the Blades to

huge fixture against Millwall. Should the Blades defeat Millwall, then three wins would be provided to end the clubs torrid stay in the third tier. The last six fixtures for the Blades do look kind, with fixtures against three of the bottom four still to come. Nevertheless, Wilder and the players will understand that nothing is guaranteed yet, given United’s recent history in sprints to the finish.

BETTER FOR THE BREAK The Owls will be in better shape personnel wise when the Championship resumes following the final international break of the season. A raft of injuries in recent weeks has hampered Carlos Carvalhal as he bids to cement Wednesday’s place in the play-offs. But the head coach says

the break came at the right time, giving those with fitness concerns a welcome chance to rest and recover. Carvalhal said: “The break was very welcome, I have to say. We have lost some key players recently and I think any team in the world would feel that. “When the spine of the team is absent,

this is difficult but all the players have been fantastic. “I believe we have been very unlucky in games – at Aston Villa we played well, even after going down to ten men. “I still do not know how we did not score against Reading, but this is football. “So now we have had the break, some players

have recovered and this is very encouraging. “We will go to Barnsley on Saturday in much better shape because our squad we will be stronger with players coming back. “We have good expectations for one or two more so let’s see. We are ready to go.”

HIRST SHORTLISTED FOR APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR Owls striker George Hirst has been shortlisted for the LFE Championship Apprentice of the Year award. The 18-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic season for the Owls Under-18s and Under23s, being a regular on the scoresheet for the SWFC youth teams. The 16/17 campaign has also seen the youngster make his senior debut for Wednesday. In August 2016, Hirst came on from the bench in the Owls’ EFL Cup clash with Cambridge

at The Abbey Stadium, and then again in the December Championship clash with Reading at The Madejski. Hirst has also made great strides on the international stage with the England Under-18s. Back in September, he fired home a first half brace as the young Lions defeated Israel 5-1 at The Globe Arena. His goalscoring exploits continued in November against Poland, when the frontman struck either side of the interval in England’s 2-0 win at The Lamex Stadium.

Hirst added to his international tally last week in England’s 2-1 victory over Qatar in Doha. The Owls academy product broke the deadlock after 15 minutes at the Aspire Complex. The winner will be

announced at the EFL Awards 2017 ceremony which will take place in the capital next month. Also in the running for the LFE Championship Apprentice of the Year award are Ben Brereton (Nottingham Forest) and Lloyd Kelly (Bristol City).
