2016/17: A RECORD YEAR FOR DONCASTER’S CAST Cast, Doncaster’s flagship theatre today announced it’s most successful year since opening selling 20% more tickets than the previous year. Although Cast boasts the lowest average ticket prices in South Yorkshire, ticket income is also up by 23%, a recordbreaking result with over 90,000 people attending the theatre in the last 12 months. 2016/17 has been a record year for Doncaster’s theatre overall, with not only more tickets sold than ever before but 56 sell out shows, twice as

many as the previous year, with recordbreaking audiences for drama, classical music and dance.

The bulk of Cast’s unprecedented growth in 2016/17 has come from the charity’s pantomime. An annual treat for families across the borough, last year’s Jack and the Beanstalk saw 24,000 local people through the doors. With over 6,000 seats already sold for this year’s family spectacular, the theatre looks on course to smash records again with Beauty and the Beast. September also

saw crowds of over 3,500 attend a free explosive and thrilling evening spectacular, Clash of Drums in Doncaster town centre, many of which had never been to the theatre before. Hundreds of young performers from local groups including Let’s Act, New Youth Theatre, Nellie Stagles School of Theatre Dance and Star Stuck Academy performed on stage at Cast last year, and Cast has seen a growing audience for local talent, which now account for 25% of all tickets purchased. At the

beginning of February, Doncaster’s leading amateur theatre company JKL Productions presented the world premiere of Heaven’s Walk, based upon the extraordinary true story of a Doncaster family in the First World War. Thanks to Cast’s ambitious fundraising campaign Make your Mark, the charity has also seen the donations increase by 150%, which will go to supporting a range of charitable incentives including workshops for young people, free tickets and accessible services. Cast has experienced

an influx of support in general, with membership enrolment doubling in size over the last 12 months. Cast members can access a range of benefits including discount at the Café Bar, invites to exclusive events and priority booking. Cast’s Director Deborah Rees comments: ‘I’m thrilled that record numbers are coming to watch world-class live performance in Doncaster, further cementing Cast as a leading destination for culture in the region. Success for a theatre is measured in many

different ways; and so above the Box Office returns, what I’m especially proud of is the generosity of local people who support the charity to make world-class arts provision available to

everyone. In 2016/17 there were a swathe of theatre-goers drawn to Doncaster for the first time, and it’s fantastic that Cast is making economic contribution to the borough as well as transforming the quality

of life for local people. It goes to show that given the conditions to thrive, organisations like Cast are putting Doncaster on the map as an attractive place to visit, live and work.’

RIO GOLD MEDALLIST ATTENDS SPECIAL OLYMPICS SOUTH YORKSHIRE Rio 2016 gold medallist, Will Bayley MBE, was the guest of honour as more than 100 people took part in a Special Olympics South Yorkshire (SOSY) sports taster day last month. The Paralympic table tennis champion gave an exhibition of some of the skills that took him to glory last summer and he provided words of encouragement for the adults and children taking part in the event at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

All participants had the opportunity to try table tennis, boccia, football, tennis, athletics, basketball and cricket throughout the day. All activities were delivered by members of the Special Olympics South Yorkshire partnership. The Special Olympics South Yorkshire Partnership is an accredited network of Special Olympics GB covering Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. The network is a group

of sports clubs and organisations working together to increase participation opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities across South Yorkshire. Will Bayley said: “When you first start playing sport it’s really important to just experiment, have fun and enjoy the sport. “Sport builds confidence and days like today are fantastic and get everyone involved.” Nigel Harrison, CEO of Yorkshire Sport Foundation, the lead

/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER

organisation of the SOSY partnership said: “The number of people attending the taster day was almost double that of last year which is great to see. “Hopefully all those attending found a sport they enjoyed and start to participate on a regular basis to enjoy the benefits of sport and physical activity.” Laura Davies, Special Olympics GB Partnership Manager, said: “It was fantastic to see so many participants getting

involved and trying the activities, some for the first time. I hope that everyone enjoyed the activity they tried and will continue to engage in the sports on a regular basis with Special Olympics South Yorkshire. “A big thank you to all the participants, volunteers, organisers and VIPs that attended. I look forward to seeing you all again in the summer when Special Olympics GB bring the National Summer Games to Sheffield.”

PRIVATE PROVIDERS HAND BACK “UNSUSTAINABLE” CARE Care providers have cancelled contracts with 95 UK councils due to a lack of funding, an investigation has found. BBC Panorama found that agencies were “struggling” to deliver the care required with the funding offered, forcing them to end their contracts. It found that one in four home care providers were at risk of insolvency and almost 70 had closed in the last three months. The figure for the number of cancelled contracts comes from a Freedom of Information request, which was responded to by 197 of 212 UK councils. ‘Brink of collapse’ Chairman of the LGA’s community wellbeing board, Cllr Izzi Seccombe, said: “We have warned that the combination of the historic under-funding of adult social care, and the significant pressures of an ageing population and the National Living Wage, are pushing the care provider market to the brink of collapse. These figures show the enormous strain providers are under and emphasises the

urgent need for a long-term, sustainable solution to the social care funding crisis.” She added: “The LGA has led a national effort to highlight the huge pressures facing adult social care and secure £2bn of significant new Government funding for the system over the next three years. The £1bn councils will initially receive this year, followed by £674m in 2018/19 and £337m in 2019/20, represents vital funding for services caring for the most vulnerable in our communities over the next few years. ‘Starting point’ “However, this is just a starting point and there currently remains a shortfall in the projected social care funding gap. There is already an expectation that the money will reduce the immediate pressure on the NHS. But it is desperately needed to protect vital support services, like home care, ensuring older people and those with mental health conditions, learning and physical disabilities live dignified and fulfilling lives. With councils facing further funding pressures and growing

demand for support by the end of the decade, this is the last chance we have to get this right.” Short-term stability Colin Angel, policy and campaigns director at UK Home Care Association (UKHCA), added: “BBC Panorama has produced quantifiable evidence of home care providers handing back unsustainable contracts to local councils. Their research adds to the body of evidence that the statefunded care sector has been compromised by inadequate funding. “The Chancellor’s Spring Budget offers £2bn over the next two years. This will provide some short-term stability for the sector. However, we need to be sure that councils will pass this funding to frontline care services. Government must also finally make a decision about longerterm funding of care and ensure that the population know what the state will fund and what individuals will need to pay themselves.” ‘Britain’s Home-Care Crisis’ aired on BBC One on 20 March.

PLANS FOR NEW PARK UNDER WAY WE HAVE MOVED! Plans for a new park on site of former Wisewood School are moving forward. Sheffield City Council had previously agreed to the exchange of a parcel of land from the former school site, which closed in 2012, with part of Spider Park. The proposal would see part of the former school site developed as a new playground, while part of the existing Spider Park, off Sevenfields Lane on the Wadsley-Wisewood border, be developed for housing. Now the council has approved an extra sliver of land in the deal, around a third of an acre to ensure that the quality of housing and impact on the surrounding area is sympathetic. The council can now progress the disposal of the land to the preferred bidder, who will be required to submit a planning application, with the monies raised from the sale funding the installation and maintenance of the new playground. Councillor Mary Lea said: “I’m thrilled that, after a considerable period of time, this land swap can take place and a new park created where it is much-needed. The council’s preferred developer has made a commitment to ensuring the park moves ahead whilst also bringing a highquality housing scheme forward. The existing Spider Park is poorly used whilst the new site on the former Wisewood School is in a much better location for the communities of Wadsley, Wisewood and Sutton. I’m convinced it will be a big success. Meanwhile, the new housing overlooking the rest of Spider Park, which enjoys great views over Sheffield, will make it a safer environment for all.” The new parcel of land will accommodate an extension to Sevenfields Lane and the provision of a pedestrian route through the site. New houses to the north side of Spider Park would provide natural surveillance over the remaining parkland and make the path between Dial House Road and

Sevenfields Lane safer to use. The proposed new children’s play area on part of the school site would help to meet the shortage of children’s play facilities in the local area and complete a recreational hub to complement the Wisewood Sports Centre, run by Places 4 People, and floodlit artificial pitches. Section 106 contributions from the developer at Spider Park would help to fund the play area and its ongoing maintenance, with some additional Section 106 funding covering the balance needed. Margaret Young, Chair of the Wisewood, Wadsley and Loxley TARA, said: “We are very pleased that the project is moving forward and we are very much looking forward to seeing the playground completed as it is just what the Wisewood area needs. The residents of Wisewood have been waiting a long time for this.” Councillor Josie Paszek added: “I regularly attend meetings in the area and am frequently asked about the progress of the playground. This is brilliant news for the Wisewood area and like a lot of local people I think it will be a major asset for local people. We are looking forward to consulting and working with local residents and children to ensure the playground is everything they wish for.”

Tramlines REVEALS its complete 2017 lineup UK rap queen Lady Leshurr leads the final additions plus dancehall duo The Heatwave, who join the likes of The Libertines, Primal Scream, Metronomy, Toots & The Maytals, Kano, The Coral, The Pharcyde and All Saints. The festival will return to Sheffield from 21 – 23 July Organisers of the biggest event in Sheffield's musical calendar – the annual inner-city music festival Tramlines – have unveiled the full lineup for its 2017 event. The festival will take place from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd July, with UK rap queen Lady Leshurr and dancehall duo The Heatwave among the final additions as well as breaking artists Ms Banks and Our Girl. The newly added acts join the already-announced likes of The Libertines, All Saints, Primal Scream, Metronomy, Kano, The

disco obsessive Leroy, hip-hop promoters Thirsty Ear and the crew behind Sheffield's bass music radio station UK Mondo all join the Into The Trees lineup, with The Heatwave and the already announced Don Letts and The Reflex. More emerging talent comes from the new PRS Momentum tent, which will take pride of place alongside the newly-reinstated stage in Devonshire Green. Rapper Ms Banks and The Big Moon side-project Our Girl join the bill, which already features hotly-tipped emerging artists like Bossy Love, Flamingods, Mista Silva and Jerry Williams. Local talent is well represented on the new stage too, with Sheffield's jazz-inspired surf-pop band Katie Pham & The Moonbathers also new to the bill Tramlines Festival Director Sarah Nulty says: “We couldn't be happier with our 2017 lineup. It's important to us to show off a wide range of musical talent, and we're delighted to have some of South Yorkshire's most exciting emerging acts joining the new artists and household names on this year's bill.” Earlybird, first release and second release tickets for Tramlines Festival 2017 sold out in record time, but third release weekend tickets are now on sale for just £42 plus booking fee, while stocks last. Tickets can be purchased from www.tramlines.org.uk

Coral and Toots & The Maytals for Tramlines' biggest lineup to date. From just £42 plus booking fee for a weekend ticket, Tramlines remains one of the best value festivals around. Tramlines is always a highlight in the UK festival calendar and this year is set to be no different, with a new-look festival site exclusively spanning three outdoor arenas and brand-new areas dedicated to emerging talent. Since it began in 2009, Tramlines has set itself apart with its inner-city location, cutting-edge lineup and unbeatable ticket price. Previous acts to have graced the Tramlines stages include Public Enemy, Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans, Sister Sledge, The Cribs, Katy B, George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic, alt-J, the xx, Dizzee Rascal, Martha Reeves Roots Manuva, Slaves, Sugarhill Gang, Buzzcocks and The Selecter. Charming, funny and at the top of her game, Lady Leshurr brings her unmissable, highenergy live show to Sunday's Main Stage for what promises to be a highlight of 2017's festival. With her Queen’s Speech series currently at fifty million views on YouTube For up-to-the-minute information about and counting, the rap talent has sold out shows Tramlines 2017 visit www.tramlines.org.uk from New York to Brixton, and attracted the or follow Tramlines on Twitter @tramlines attention of international hip-hop heavyweights like Timbaland, Erykah Badu, and Busta Rhymes. Dancehall duo The Heatwave are well known for filling dancefloors across the globe, meaning that their appearance in Tramlines' brand-new Into The Trees area at the Ponderosa Park main stage site on Saturday is sure to help get the party atmosphere in full swing. Local DJ talent from genre-hopping

DRUMMING machine and all round good egg Stevo, aloft on his transparent drum kit, helped kick start the rest of Arizona to a blistering Still Of The Night and Fool For Your Lovin’ start to a near sell out crowd at Chesterfield’s Real Time Live, though when you’re a covers outfit celebrating ten years in business filling large venues like Real Time Live must be amazing. And believe it or not, these boys really know what they’re doing. Like the previous show I saw, a large black drape covered the stage as they opened, thus starting the twenty song set with a ‘bang’. Eighties rock is the band’s forte and throughout the evening they knocked out some great gems of musically history. Yes, we knew them all, from staple tunes by Sheffield’s Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and AC/DC to name but a few. For me though it’s the way that this very likable unit delivered that caught my eye. To say they were nut tight is an understatement. With four Marks in the band (I bet that’s fun) they absolutely dripped in professionalism from frontman Mark to the rear feet-kicking of Mark (Stevo) on drums. New boy on bass Luke Glossop fitted in effortlessly as the entire band seemed to be loving every minute of this special night. With the tempo being reasonably up they did drop the pace somewhat for Heaven, followed by Thunder’s Love Walked In which went down well. Other stand outs included stuff by Bon Jovi, Queen, and naturally AC/DC which some may think is old school gentility, but for me who normally likes a smattering of present tunes, everything locked into place as guitars and vocals rocked the night away. The crowd even participated in decent sing alongs, which for a local band to instigate and succeed with is quite something. And yes, the punters too were in fine voice. Arizona may be doing what many local bands are currently playing and yes, the ending could have been better as like before they opted for a slower close with Queen’s We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions, which just doesn’t do it for me. Something really ‘up’ would’ve been better, but everyone else seemed pleased so let’s not be too picky. Overall, Arizona created a red hot atmosphere coupled with a performance that left no doubt that these guys have talent and experience by the bucket load.

Giant smiles as Gulliver’s Valley Resort planning permission is confirmed Gulliver’s family theme park resort’s “most ambitious plans yet” will come to fruition now that the Secretary of State has agreed with Rotherham Council that development can go ahead. The development in South Yorkshire was granted planning permission by Rotherham Council last month. Following a 21 day period in which Sajid Javid MP, the Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government, could call-in the decision, Gulliver’s has reason to celebrate. Councillors on Rotherham Council’s Planning Board voted unanimously to give the go-ahead for the theme park resort to be built on the 250 acre former Pithouse West colliery site in the Rother Valley. The brand new development will be a boon for the local economy with the multi-million pound project bringing hundreds of jobs to the region. The family that has run the Gulliver’s theme park business for almost 40 years is “delighted”. Managing Director Julie Dalton said: “After a good two years of hard work, it’s absolutely wonderful to know that our vision for Gulliver’s fourth UK theme park is going to become a reality. We’re all absolutely delighted. “Throughout the planning process, I and my senior staff have taken part in several consultation events around the local area, giving local residents the chance to comment on our plans. We worked closely with Rotherham Council and Highways England to ensure our planning application did not negatively impact on local access routes and amended plans to reduce the visual impact of our larger attractions. It’s incredibly satisfying that

local councillors voted unanimously in favour of our proposals. This is an exciting time in Gulliver’s history.” As the business’s fourth UK theme park project, Gulliver’s Valley will bring together the best elements of their existing parks in Warrington, Matlock Bath and Milton Keynes. Julie Dalton added: “Our Gulliver’s Valley development will give the area a huge economic boost as we look to use a local supply chain and bring tourism pounds into the local economy. Add to that the number of local jobs it will create - up to 255 full time equivalent posts - and it will be a real positive for the Rother Valley community.” Gulliver’s aim to open their brand-new Valley Resort in 2020 which will include a main theme park hub, with rides and attractions aimed at children aged two to 13 and their families. Gulliver’s Valley will also include an indoor water play zone, a climbing centre, a glades attraction, and an education and ecology centre encompassing forest classrooms and outdoor learning adventures for young children. Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy Cllr Denise Lelliott said the latest development was ‘great news’ and paved the way for the development to go ahead. She added: “This decision is the culmination of more than two years-worth of planning by Gulliver’s, including the Council agreeing to sell the land for the development to Gulliver’s in 2015. We now look forward to seeing Gulliver’s plans being brought to fruition. As well as being a fantastic facility for local families, the Valley

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill backs major fundraising appeal Jessica Ennis-Hill is backing an appeal to raise half a million pounds to improve facilities at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield. Weston Park Cancer Charity is working in partnership with the NHS to deliver huge improvements to inpatient facilities which will benefit thousands of cancer patients and their families each year. Over the next 3 years as many as 10,500 people will be treated for cancer on the wards at Weston Park Hospital. The NHS will of course meet the cost of delivering cancer treatment and care for these patients.

Your support will help them provide: • Circadian lighting on the inpatient wards which mirrors natural day and night rhythms and has been proven to facilitate sleep and rest, allowing patients to get a much better night’s sleep. • Comfortable recliner chairs for use by visiting relatives who often spend long periods of time at a

patient’s bedside - also for use by patients so they can sit comfortably out of bed. • Installation of wifi across the wards greatly improving patient communication and entertainment facilities. • Smart TVs which provide a wider range of entertainment and allow patients to communicate with loved ones via video link. • Enhancements to decoration and funding of artwork to improve environment and patient wellbeing. • Improved day room facilities so patients and their families have an activity area away from the ward this will include facilities for children visiting.

Please support Weston Park Cancer Charity and make a donation to make a real difference to families living with cancer. Visit beyondthetreatment.org.uk

Resort will result in a massive boost to the area and our local economy. It will bring in visitors, provide jobs for local people, and complement the existing activities at nearby Rother Valley Country Park. “This is a family-run business with a proven track record for building and operating family entertainment developments and we are very proud and excited that Gulliver’s has chosen the borough to develop their resort.” The resort will also offer family-friendly accommodation in the shape of glamping, selfcatering woodland lodges and the central Lilliput Castle Hotel. The development will also encompass Gully’s Dream Village, a community where children with

life threatening illnesses can be given the chance to enjoy cost-free respite in a magical environment. In addition, nature trails, walks, outdoor gyms and woodland runs at Gulliver’s Valley will be available to be used by the local community as well as visitors to the theme park. Now that planning permission has been given, work will commence on the Pithouse West site.

FULL THROTTLE AS THE SUPERCAR EXPERIENCE RIDES BACK TO MEADOWHALL FOR BLUEBELL WOOD

May 13th, based once again in the Orange Car Park. Darren Pearce, Meadowhall Centre Director, said: “Following the success of last year’s event, we were delighted to bring this spectacle back to Meadowhall to raise more funds for Bluebell Wood. It seems there are some big car lovers in Sheffield and we hope even more people can get down and enjoy the day with us.” Bluebell Wood Corporate Fundraiser Julie Hampson said: “Last year’s Supercar Experience was really something special; car-enthusiasts turned out in their thousands to see the spectacular display, and even go for a luxurious passenger ride. “This year’s event is set to be even bigger, and we can’t wait to see the line-up of cars that Supercar Driver has in store.”

Following the overwhelming success of 2016’s Supercar Experience in aid of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Meadowhall is delighted to announce the return of the revved-up event. The event - which raised more than £6,500 for the hospice on its last road trip to Meadowhall - will see over 50 of the world’s most desirable motors such as Lamborghinis and Porches - descend on the Centre this Spring. This gives car-lovers the chance to get up close and personal with their favourites and take a spin thanks to their Supercar owners. The extravagant line up will be cruising to Meadowhall between 10am and 3pm on Saturday

Local residents can keep abreast of news and developments throughout the Gulliver’s Valley project at www.gulliversvalley.co.uk. A dedicated Facebook page is also available - search for Gulliver’s Valley Resort

Visitors to the event will be asked to make a minimum £1 donation to Bluebell Wood on entry into the event. Anyone interested in attending can register their interest for free by visiting www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/meadowhall-presentssupercar-experience-tickets-31875164475

DRIVING LICENCES TO GO SMARTPHONE-FRIENDLY Digital driving licenses that can be displayed on a smartphone are set to become a reality in 2018. While the “quick, easy and secure” service will not replace plastic licences, it will provide a convenient and legal alternative for those with a compatible device.

CITY DRIVERS COULD FACE DAILY DIESEL CHARGES An announcement expected this week may lead to diesel drivers being charged socalled ‘toxin taxes’ when driving in certain English cities. Leeds, Nottingham, Derby, Birmingham and Southampton are among 35 key areas designated as sites for “clean air zones” by environment secretary Andrea Leadsom. Private diesel vehicles in some of the worst-polluting cities could be subject to restrictions on driving in peak hours, and even daily charges to dissuade them from taking offending cars into the zones. It is thought as many as 10 million diesel cars could be susceptible to the charges, with only the very newest models excluded. The expected announcement would come in the same week that London mayor Sadiq Khan

AFP

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) says it will have a test system in place by September this year, with the aim of going live by next March. One of the reasons behind the DVLA’s plan – the biggest change to the system since paper licences were scrapped in 2015 – is to provide

unveils his plans for a £12.50 day charge for the most-polluting vehicles entering any part of Greater London inside the North and South Circular roads. Set to become effective from 2019, the plan for the capital comes as an extra consideration for drivers who already face the basic £10 congestion charge for central London, and from October 23, a £10 ‘T-charge’ for any pre2006 diesel and petrol vehicles entering central London during peak hours. London is already leading the way with a trial which sees parking charges for diesel vehicles rise to £7.35 an hour in parts of central London. In Ms Leadsom’s plans for the wider country, it is reported that diesel cars as well as commercial vehicles could face peak-hour bans in around “nine or 10” of the affected cities, while another 25 towns would focus attention on commercial diesels only, including coaches, taxi and lorries. Each council in the affected areas would be obliged to devise its own plans to tackle nitrous oxide and particulate pollution, largely attributed to diesels. The creation of this network of clean air zones would allow councils to impose bans or charges on polluting vehicles that enter them, enforced by cameras. It is thought that residents would be given exemptions, or at the very least discounts for driving in their own areas.

the ability for drivers to share and validate information with trusted third parties. And security is an issue flagged by RAC spokesman Pete Williams, who says drivers will need assurances over online safety and the threat of fraud or abuse. “It is also important to note that this electronic licence is not a replacement for the plastic licence and it will still be necessary to carry this with you as it will only be available where you have a web connection," he said. “The majority of motorists will welcome this advance as a positive step embracing technology and making it easier and more convenient.” The DVLA confirmed that work is currently in the early stages, with further details on exactly how the service will work set to be released further down the line. Back in May 2016, chief executive Oliver Morley first revealed on Twitter that a prototype for a digital licence was being developed. In his post, an iPhone screen displayed the image of a licence within the Apple Pay app

Other measures, including low-emission buses, cycle lanes and park-and-ride initiatives would be encouraged according to the needs of the locale, with Whitehall reportedly keen to point out there would be no “one-size-fits-all” approach. Ministers have reportedly shelved plans, as they currently exist, to launch a new diesel scrappage scheme, because with as many as two million highly-polluting vehicles needing to be traded in, it would be not be financially viable.

– already being used to make life easier for air travellers by storing boarding passes, and shoppers by holding payment card details. The DVLA’s business plan states: “The driver will be in control of their data and this can be used to share and validate driver information with trusted third parties through a secure website. “This service will not replace the full driving licence. The digital licence service will only be available to driving licence holders who have authenticated themselves on gov.uk through the existing driving licence service. “This service will be available 24/7, wherever the driver has a web connection.”

ANGLER’S CORNER

rain had put a damper on things. We could see carp moving further out, but exploratory casts in their direction produced nothing, so I stuck with Clint Walker to the plan; bait little and often, and hope that After a resounding blank last week, I needed fish would move in… Another carp followed, a confidence boost… so why did I return to again a double figure fish, but only another a difficult water again? I enjoyed my session barbel had been caught next door. As lunch time recently after tench and bream on an old approached, it was either dig in, or go home; my estate lake, and conditions looked absolutely companions did the latter, opting to return home, spot on, so the decision was made; back to the one having caught three barbel, the other missing pool in search of more! just one bite… Bump…that was me falling back to earth again. Matches on this water often finish around 3pm, I sat for ten hours, tried everything I knew to and I know that carp often return to the margins produce fish, had a single bite, which I connected to sweep up leftovers after noisy matchmen have with, but unfortunately, the fish had other ideas, left, so I was banking on some afternoon action. dragging me along the bank of sedges in front of I prefer to fish a very slack line in the edge, as my peg, before diving into some lilies whereupon I’ve seen carp spook off main lines as they brush my flimsy hooklink was smashed, and it was lost. against tight lines in the clear water, but I was I wasn’t completely unhappy though, it was nice running out of options (and patience) so changed to catch up with other anglers on the bank, and I to a big method feeder. Loaded with sticky was delighted for one of them, who landed five Spotted Fin GO2 Super Sweet Blend and a few fish, a mixture of smashing tench and bream, pellets, I put corn on the hook, and swung out the which saw him go home cheered considerably feast with a mighty splash… surely this would after sticking it out in the coldest peg on the lake! provoke a reaction? Indeed it did… So, later in the week, realising that I had to catch I’d been sat for less than a minute when the something, I visited a ‘banker’ water in search bobbin commenced the ‘method dance’, jiggling of carp. Due to ongoing family circumstances, I as fish hacked away at the groundbait, before arrived late, and was a little dismayed to find an rocketing up to the blank as a carp took off angler already in the peg I fancied. No matter, across the lake! I absolutely love fishing the there are plenty of other pegs, but a quick chat method, and still get excited by the first bleep as with the two gentlemen who were just setting fish home in on the bait, and then the screaming up revealed that the match on the preceding take which follows, it’s just a fun way to fish, Sunday had yielded a winning net of just 5lb, but the rod here must be locked down, or you which didn’t bode well, however, once again, the will lose it! I started to tally a few more fish, weather was perfect, so I was hopeful. each carp a double, each one scorching off It’s a ‘one rod only’ venue, and I love to fish for when hooked, only interrupted by a brace of the carp (which run to around 20lb) on sporting hungry barbel, and eventually finished with a tackle, so I always take a pair of Sonik S3 rods long, beautifully marked mirror before I ran out with a test curve of just 1.5lb. Twinned with a of bait. I ended the day with a total of fourteen matching 6000 series baitrunner, the light set carp, and two barbel, a good result after a very up is great fun when playing hard fighting carp, and the soft action definitely results in fewer lost weak start, and far ahead of the only other angler fish in the shallow margins as they fight to avoid who stayed on my bank, who caught five fish. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no longer a competitive the net. I take a pair, so I can rig the other with angler, but I like to see how I compare against a mini Spomb to introduce bait without getting pestered by birds! I began the day with the usual anglers who have fished the water for far longer than I, and it’s always nice to find out what they tactics; a heavyweight Vardis leader, small lead, have caught…especially if I have caught more! and a steamed straight section of coated braid to A change in tactics worked well on a day which construct a Ronnie Rig which was baited with a promised much, and, after an inauspicious 12mm pop up. This was fished with a tiny bag of pellets added to the hook, just to slow it down beginning, it did just that with well over through the water to protect the hook point, then 150lb of fish netted. I also lost a couple, one lobbed out underarm just a couple of rod lengths to a disappointing failure of a pre-tied, mass produced hook link which parted at the knot, out. Over the top, a few Spombs of corn and pellet mix, then sit back to wait and get settled... and one because the fish clipped a reed bed on the way in where it transferred the hook to a I’ve changed my bait provider recently, moving stem (how do they do that?) but overall, I’d had to Spotted Fin, and have become very keen on a fantastic day’s sport, in fair weather, and put the Catalyst range. So far, the fluoro range of plenty of fish on the bank… you can’t really ask 12mm pop ups have been my ‘go to’ bait, and for more than that can you? have produced fish for me when the angler next door is struggling, and they worked again with a fish within minutes. A chubby double carp was quickly netted, the rig reloaded, and a couple of ‘top up’ Spombs added. I like to fish particle baits early in the year, but having run out of my mix blend (and failing to prepare any other) I’d bought a couple of bags of corn from Farmfoods, added a small amount of Catalyst 6mm pellets, and a hefty glug of matching food dip, and left it to soak overnight in a sealed bucket. I can’t work out what is in the Catalyst, but when I opened the bucket, I was assailed by a caramel/yeast SITE FEES type smell that I could’ve tucked in to myself! FROM JUST Gorgeous! STATIC CARAVANS FOR £1300 I sat for a further hour, lost another fish, then SALE & HIRE IN LINCOLNSHIRE INC RATES caught a second and third of similar size. My two compatriots had a single barbel between them, but it became obvious that overnight

TAKE A SNEAKY PEEK AT THIS YEAR’S TOUR DE YORKSHIRE FINALE IN SHEFFIELD Looking forward to the Tour de Yorkshire coming to Sheffield on Sunday 30 April? Here’s a sneaky peek at the route that the peloton will take before crossing the finish line at Fox Valley in Stocksbridge at around 5.30pm. Cyclists will make their way from Bradford into Sheffield, and around Bolsterstone and Midhopestones, before arriving in Stocksbridge between 4pm and 4.30pm. To ensure the safety of cyclists and spectators alike, there will be some traffic controls that Sheffield City Council needs to implement. These are: • If you live in a house on the race route and you park on-street, please make alternative parking arrangements on race day. We would ask that all cars are removed for 2pm. • A “soft” road closure (which will allow access for residents and businesses, under steward control) will be in place on Manchester Road, between the junctions of Unsliven Road and Carr Road, from 5am on Sunday 30 April. • A “hard” road closure will then be in place along Manchester Road (between the above same junctions) from 3pm until 8pm.

2 Match Lakes & 2 Pleasure Ponds Open Matches Tuesday & Thursday

• Further “hard” closures will be along the race route (nicknamed the Stocksbridge Loop) from 4.30pm to 5.30pm, meaning no access at all will be possible. This will affect Carr Road, Cockshot Lane, Folderings Lane, Heads Lane, Yewtrees Lane, Allas Lane, Moor Lane, Mortimer Road, Cranberry Road, Salter Hill Lane and Underbank Lane. People living within the area bounded by these roads will not be able to cross over the race route during this time.

Carp - Bream - Ide Roach - Tench - Crucian

• Should there be a need for emergency services vehicles to get anywhere, they will be given priority via race control.

A SAD DAY, SAYS WARNE Millers Interim Manager Paul Warne caught up with the media following his side’s 1-0 defeat at home to Fulham – a result which sees Rotherham’s relegation to League One confirmed. “Obviously we’d had a couple of weeks without a game,” said Warne. “After the QPR game we’ve done a lot of work as a defensive unit. I was well aware that Fulham would have a lot more of the ball than us, there’s no shock there. So we had to work on our two banks of four and our strikers dropping in. “It was all about when we retained the ball and what we did with it. I knew if we could get chances we’d hurt them and we created enough chances in the game to win it. We had as many chances as them, if not better, but we didn’t take them. “The lads are licking their wounds in there. They know they’re relegated now and it’s a sad day for the players, the staff and everybody at the Club. “We’ve won very few games in a tough league and for us to win eight on the spin was about as likely as my hair growing back. I was proud of the lads in parts today, I could see they were nervy. I tried to keep them going as best I could.” The goal came on 66 minutes as Sone Aluko tapped home from barely a yard out after a goalmouth scramble, of which Warne added,

“It’s never nice to concede a goal but it was like pinball wizard. “I just wish we’d have took a chance it would have been nice for the fans to enjoy a goal.” His team should have gone ahead after barely five minutes when Danny Ward placed a free header wide and Lee Frecklington brought a smart save from David Button before the break. “I’m always wax lyrical about Wardy. He’s been playing with injuries and he needs a goal. Against Fulham to have a header from six yards, you’d fancy him. “They had three bites of the cherry (for their goal).” Carlton Morris had a positive impact for the home side as he put in a great shift up front alongside Ward on his home debut. “I thought he was good,” said Warne of Morris. “He grew into the game. After ten minutes I thought he was blowing but that was match practice. He looked good but he got more tired. He wants to hold it and bring it in. He did do well. “Obviously everyone knows what my ethos is, but the fans are good to people who work hard. He worked hard and, as a centre-forward, it’s not your dream to chase back all the time. “There are positives. I’m not going to stand here and say we were the best team by a

to it, it was a great day and we are nearly there now. “The work ethic of the players is superb, the chasing the ball down in the 90th minute and its there for all to see, that has been a big change for me and as a football club, no one outworks us.” Marquis hit his 24th, 25th and 26th goals of the Sky Bet League Two season to put him three Manager Darren Ferguson praised the clear of Barnet’s John Akinde in the race for reaction of his players as they came from the Golden Boot, but Ferguson was impressed behind to claim a memorable 5-1 win at with the effort from all three of his strikers. TEAM GOAL FOR MARQUIS John Marquis netted his first Football League hat-trick against Grimsby Town but securing all three points for Rovers was the forward’s only motivation. Two goals in the first half, followed by a 25yard effort in the second, sent Rovers on their way to three points against rivals Grimsby Town. “It is my first Football League hat-trick so it is one that I will always remember, but it was all about winning and picking up the three points,” he said. “I’m playing in a talented side who always make chances for me, whether it is James Coppinger, Gary McSheffrey, Andy Williams or Tommy Rowe, we have some of the best players in the league in my opinion. “I’m buzzing for Andy Williams as he worked

his socks off, and Alfie May came off the bench and grabbed one, so it has been a good day at the office for the strikers.” Marquis wants Rovers to achieve promotion to Sky Bet League One at the earliest opportunity and then concentrate on securing the Sky Bet League Two title. “We are almost there and we just want to get promoted as soon as possible, but for us we want more than just promotion we want to go on and win the league,” he said. “For us now we have six more games and Plymouth have the same, we just have to make sure that we finish above them come the end of the season. “We have three at home now and three away, we are in form now bar the Plymouth result but we should have won that game, and we are in that part of the season where you need to be in that kind of form.”

million miles. We’ve worked really hard and I’m proud but just disappointed we didn’t get the result. “Frecks’ calf tightened up and he’s got a hit on the knee. I’ve got a few in there at the moment licking their wounds.”

The second week of British Summer Time brought as expected lighter nights so once we again we had a double fixture list in the County Senior League, with games taking place on Wednesday night and Saturday afternoon. Premier Division It proved to be a bus and productive week for Handsworth Parramore Reserves. They started their week, by going 2-0 down at home to AFC Penistone Church on Wednesday night, but things were to get better for them. Firstly, they scored three times without reply to beat Penistone 3-2 and then they went on to beat Denaby United 2-1 at the same venue on Saturday. Penistone quickly got the 3-2 loss against Handsworth out of their system, as they beat Denaby Main 11-1 on the weekend. Wombwell Main claimed their first draw since September, as they drew 1-1 with high-flyers Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. The point meant that Stocksbridge surrendered fourth spot to Jubilee Sports, who beat MIllmoor Juniors 1-0 at Grange Park. Division One Division One saw the most of the action this week. South Kirkby Colliery remain the leaders on 50 points, following a comfortable 4-1 home win over Caribbean Sports midweek. Grimethorpe Sports sit just two points further back, with a game in hand. Stevie Bennett inspired Grimethorpe to back-to-back wins this week, Bennett scored twice on Wendesday in a 3-1 victory over fourth placed Wickersley, and he added a hat-trick on the weekend in a 4-2 away win against AFC Dronfield. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 sit in third, after they beat Oughtibridge 4-1 away from home. Ecclesfield have played two gmaes more than the SouthnKirkby though, and only have two games remaining. Goals from Dan Beech (2) and Rob Jerrison were enough to give Sheffield Bankers a 3-0 away win against Davy FC. Davy slipped up again on the weekend, as they fell 3-1 against Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Gemsworth were beaten heavily 6-2 midweek against High Green Villa. Division Two North League leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels Development drew 1-1 away against third placed Hepworth United in a crucial match at the top of the Division Two North. Stocksbridge followed that up on Saturday with a 1-0 away win against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Develpment. The four points leave Stocksbridge five points clear of second placed Dodworth. Stocksbridge now face an anxious wait to see whether they have done enough to clinch the title, as they have finished their fixtures, but Dodworth still have two games to play. Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development claimed their first win on the season on Wednesday, with a 3-2 win over Working Wonders at Park Road. 'A UNITED FUTURE' FOR YOUNG GOALKEEPERS? The club’s Academy is looking to recruit goalkeepers for the United Futures Programme, with the next course to begin in September. There will be an open trials event held at Shirecliffe on Monday 10th April, from 5.30pm-7pm, purely aimed at U16 goalkeepers that aren’t currently attached to a professional club and who are within a realistic travelling distance of

Sheffield. Successful trialists will then be offered the opportunity to begin a two-year course at Hillsborough College, starting in September, studying on an elite football programme, known as ‘A United Future’. This offers students the chance to complete a recognised vocational qualification and hone their technical skills with the Blades.

Students will study for a BTEC extended Diploma in Sport, Performance and Excellence at Level 3 - equivalent to 3 A Levels (worth 180 UCAS points). With the option of a further three years studying to gain a full honours degree at Sheffield Hallam University. Applicants wishing to apply or wanting more information, should contact recruitment@ sufc.co.uk

UNDER 18s MAKE IT TWELVE UNBEATEN AFTER WATFORD WIN

A first-half brace from David Parkhouse saw off Watford at Shirecliffe, as United remain undefeated in 2017. Already assured of the divisional title, Derek Geary’s side are keeping the momentum going ahead of the forthcoming playoff’s where they will face the runners-up in the south division of the category two United’s U18s are clubs. now 12 games After a quiet opening unbeaten in the half hour, two goals Professional Development League before the break gave the Blades following another victory on Saturday. an advantage they

never looked like relinquishing. Firstly, in the 36th minute, PARKHOUSE headed home from a Charlesworth corner, then four minutes later, the Irish striker headed home Ford’s inviting left-wing cross despite a tightangle. The second-half saw Unied control much of the game and repel the Hornets when necessary to ensure another three points were added to the tally.

U23s DOWN EAGLES IN LONDON United’s U23s claimed an impressive victory against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday afternoon. Jake Bennett put the Blades in front early on, prior to David Brooks and Jordan Hallam getting on the scoresheet after

Jake Eastwood had saved a penalty at the beginning of the second-half. On a hot day in the capital, the Blades were quickly out of the blocks and went in front on 12 minutes. Kelly did well on the left to make space for a cross and BENNETT

was volleyed home past Henry at the back post. The remainder of the first period was an even affair, but Palace should have levelled in the 41st minute, when Tavares wasted a great opportunity. Two minutes after the restart, the Eagles missed an even

better chance to restore parity, with Eastwood at his best to deny Kirkby from the spot after the referee had spotted an infringement against the visitors. And in the next attack, United rubbed salt into Palace’s wounds. BROOKS drove into the box

before firing home left-footed. And with eight minutes remaining, HALLAM made sure of the victory tapping home, with Slater and Hirst involved in the build-up. The victory extends United’s unbeaten run to three matches as they continue to

chase them teams above them in the Professional Development League. Blades: Eastwood, Bennett, Kelly, Reed, Graham, Cantrill, T. Smith (Hallam 78), Slater, Hirst, Brooks (Charlesworth 86), Mallon (Gilmour 45) Unused: Warhurst, Doherty.

UNITED ON THE BRINK WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH

By the time this article appears in print, Sheffield United could have secured promotion to the Sky Bet Championship with five games to spare. If promotion is secured, it well end a six-year stay in League One, something that many wouldn’t have imagined upon relegation in 2011. The speed in which Chris Wilder has transformed the clubs fortunes is

remarkable. Wilder was faced with an overpaid, large and aging group when he became the manager of the club he has supported his entire life. The turnover in players over the last year is evidence of the clear out undertaken at Bramall Lane. Of the squad of 18 that lined up against Scunthorpe in the final game of last season, only eight survive. The trio of

Paul Coutts, Chris Basham and Billy Sharp are the only players in that squad who are regulars in red and white under Wilder. The success of United’s recruitment over the summer is a big reason why the club is ready to take the step up. The recruitment has been so impressive, that I can only outline Leon Clarke as under-performing when given a chance in the team. The club will already be looking ahead

to the summer window, although it is important that the club keeps the nucleus together that is taking this team up. Rotherham United and Wigan Athletic are paying a heavy price for shedding their squad upon promotion to the Championship. Players such as Simon Moore, Jack O’Connell, John Fleck and Mark Duffy are just a few who will be looking to make a mark in the second tier after promotion is secured.

OWLS DISAPPOINTED WITH DERBY DRAW Carlos Carvalhal said he was disappointed not to come away with all three points following the Owls’ 1-1 draw against Barnsley at Oakwell. Ex-Tykes striker Sam Winnall opened the scoring for Wednesday in the second half before Angus MacDonald levelled for the home

side with an injury-time header. Carvalhal said: “Today we came to win the game. “In the first half, none of the goalkeepers had much to do, then we scored the goal. “Barnsley didn’t cause us any problems until the final five minutes, so it’s disappointing that we

didn’t win. “As I’ve said before, in the Championship, getting a second goal is very important but unfortunately we didn’t do this. “We were forced to make changes during the game with Sam Hutchinson coming off, this is never good as it means we can’t make

changes later in the game. “They scored is from a free kick in injury time, these things happen in football. “What we have to do is in our hands and we now look forward to Tuesday, where we will be fighting to win as always.”

months. But the head coach feels things are beginning to turn in favour of the Owls and expects positive news ahead of the next two fixtures, with a trip to Rotherham on Tuesday, followed by a home clash with Newcastle at the

weekend. Explaining in detail during the pre-match press conference on Monday afternoon, Carlos said: “People ask me sometimes why we have changed a little the style of last season. “When we look to the

team of the final of the play-off, we have been a long time without Tom Lees, Ross Wallace, Kieran Lee, Sam Hutchinson, Fernando Forestieri and Gary Hooper. “These players have been out a lot of time. With different players, you can’t play the same football, even though they have quality. “These are players that connect things, everyone knows Kieran Lee connects the midfield and attack, Gary Hooper links midfield and attack, Forestieri is a linker also and we need these specific points to play the football we like and the fans like. “But when we miss
