GREEN LIGHT FOR PRIME LEISURE DEVELOPMENT A major £6million development at Lakeside in Doncaster was given the green light by planning committee last week. The council led Lakeside Triangle scheme, at one of the most prestigious and popular leisure locations in the region, will see eight units created – three of which are already under offer by Burger King, Dunkin’ Donuts and

Taco Bell. Planning permission has been granted for five restaurants and three drive-through units ranging from 1,800sqft to 3,650sqft. The scheme is expected to create about 200 jobs and generate income for Doncaster Council. Peter Dale, the Council’s Director of Regeneration and Environment, said: “Securing planning approval is a major milestone for this

innovative council initiative. Doncaster Lakeside is one of the most attractive leisure, business and residential destinations in the north and it comes as no surprise that there has been strong interest from occupiers for units at Lakeside Triangle. Anyone interested should contact our agents Pudney Shuttleworth in the first instance.” Peter Dale continued:

“Doncaster is quickly establishing itself as a development hotspot and the council’s proactive approach to supporting and aiding major projects is seen as a big attraction for investors and developers.” The highly accessible site is located next to the wonderful Dome leisure facility, an 11 screen Vue cinema complex and close to Lakeside Village

Outlet and other attractions. It is being marketed by Pudney Shuttleworth on 0113 203 1130. The units are expected to be available from spring 2018. Further information on Lakeside Triangle is available at: www. doncaster.gov.uk/ lakesidetriangle Details of other developments in Doncaster can be found at: www. businessdoncaster. com

STREETS AHEAD SUPPORTS WILDLIFE AROUND KELHAM ISLAND areas. It is so important that bats, which are a protected species, have suitable roost sites. The bird boxes are designed for species such as Wagtails.” In addition to installing the boxes, 15 Amey employees returned to the site for their annual Community Involvement day to help clear a watercourse channel around Kelham to increase the water flow. Rochelle KentEllis, from the River

Stewardship Company said “We would like to thank Amey volunteers for their hard work helping us to clear the channel around Kelham. Having such a great turn out, in very wet weather, meant that we have been able to clear a large section of the channel. “The clearing of the channel, in conjunction with the installation of bat and bird boxes, will hopefully bring an abundance of wildlife to the area. It will also help to prevent flooding

locally, which is great news for Kelham residents and businesses too!” Streets Ahead has been installing bat and bird boxes around the city since the start of the contract and continues to work with local communities and organisations to enhance Sheffield’s wildlife. Last year, Tramlines generated over £6 million across the city of Sheffield during the festival weekend.

BUYING YOUR SHARE OF THE FESTIVAL Current owners Tramlines Events have agreed to the bid price of £1.2 million, which is below market value, in order to encourage investment from the city’s people and businesses. HEALTH BENEFITS OF LEMON WATER WE HAVE MOVED! By Silversurfers Features Editor Mar 31, 2017 We all know drinking water helps keep us healthy and feeling our best – by adding a squeeze of lemon to your glass in the morning you could take it even one step further. Lemon is a powerful fruit. It’s a source of vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin A, vitamin E, folate, calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium and more. Incorporating lemon to your diet can do everything from support weight loss to aid digestion. Here’s just a few of the benefits associated with drinking lemon water. It promotes hydration The same way athletes rely on sports drinks to stay hydrated, lemon water can help give your water a boost and keep you hydrated throughout the day. It improves skin Lemon is a rich source of vitamin C, which is known to help improve skin’s texture and help with wrinkles and dryness. Drinking plenty of water is also known to help improve the complexion, so together it’s a winning combination. It supports weight loss Studies have found that lemon significantly reduced weight gain caused by a high-fat diet in mice. While studies have yet to prove the same for humans, there is much anecdotal evidence that says drinking lemon water has a similar benefit. Part of this is probably due to lemon’s natural flavour – it helps you feel fuller and makes drinking water more appealing, helping you to go longer between snacking. It keeps breath fresh There’s a reason so many cleaning products are lemon-scented. The natural smell of this citrus fruit can banish a lot of other bad scents. You can keep your breath fresher by drinking a glass of lemon water in the morning and after

meals. It will help stimulate saliva and prevent dry mouth, which often leads to bad breath. It prevents kidney stones The citric acid found in lemons is said to help prevent calcium kidney stones. Paired with an increased water intake, it can help keep your kidneys functioning well and stave off uncomfortable kidney stones. It aids digestion Drinking lemon water can help keep your liver functioning at its best, too, which will in turn aid with better digestion. Many people swear by lemon water to help reduce indigestion and bloating, as well as heartburn and even constipation.

CITY TEA DANCE

Friday nights are not just for late night revellers in Sheffield City Centre, as older people showed when they waltzed and tangoed through the Winter Garden on Friday 31 March. With live music from organist Aubrey Robinson, more than 100 older people put on their dancing shoes and grabbed their partners in the latest tea dance held in the beautiful surroundings of Sheffield’s Winter Garden, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. With tea, coffee, cake and scones served throughout, the dancers were given the perfect opportunity to socialise, be active and experience the city at night. The tea dance, which was just £2 per person, was sponsored by St Paul’s Mercure Hotel, who provided tea, coffee and biscuits, and Marks & Spencer, who provided scones and wine. Tea dances and similar events will take place in the city centre throughout the year. People can find out about future events by checking the Winter Garden notice boards, following @wintergardenM on twitter and Sheffield City Centre on Facebook.

A dozen ex-service personnel have attended a course organised by Sheffield City Council designed to give them the skills and confidence to secure new employment. The Lifeworks course, run by the Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) in partnership with the Council, has been hailed as a big success for the veterans – who said they had struggled to adapt to life after leaving the Armed Forces. Problems they had encountered included writing CVs, losing confidence and missing the camaraderie and support of their colleagues. On completing the week-long course, Lewis, one of the delegates, said: “My confidence in my own CV has increased and it’s got my thinking back on track. “It’s enabled me to readjust my sights. I was a sergeant major, so I should have the confidence and abilities to apply for team leader or project manager positions.” Another one of the attendees, Graham, said that adjusting to civilian life had been a struggle. He said: “I cut myself off from my military background and suffered anxiety and depression. Lifeworks has helped me realise what a low ebb I’d come to. I now know what a good CV and covering

letter looks like and I also know that there are many ex-forces groups out there that can support me, both professionally and socially.” Attendees were individually assessed, coached, given interview skills, presentation tips, and invited to mock interviews, which the council helped organise as part of its commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant. Councillor Tony Damms, Armed Forces champion at Sheffield City Council, said: “I’ve been inspired by the dedication and humour of these ex-service personnel. Applying for new jobs and adjusting to the new demands of modern life are not easy. I’m pleased the council has played its part helping exservice men secure employment.” Lifeworks Engagement Manager Lesley-Jane Holt added “This is the best attended course the RBLI has run in the North of England. We hope this will encourage other ex-servicemen & women to do the same. The course will see life-changing results for the people who attended and we will continue supporting them for as long as they need us.”

Motorists are braced for a busy bank holiday weekend, with research from the RAC suggesting leisure traffic will peak on Easter Sunday. As the countdown begins until the long weekend, the study shows that 12.8 million leisure car journeys are likely to occur over the four days. And the total climbs to 14.3 million once Maundy Thursday travellers are factored in to the equation. On Easter Sunday itself, the RAC believes close to 3.75 million cars will be on the road as people visit family members and go on days out.

Rod Dennis, RAC Traffic Watch spokesman, said this year’s Easter traffic trends could be slightly different due to the timing of the school holidays. He said: “Things are a little different this year to last – with many schools having already broken up, a lot of traffic on Easter Sunday in particular will likely be families returning from trips.” Mr Dennis added: “More than three million leisure trips will take place on Easter Monday, perhaps as more people head back home for the start of the working week – although with school holidays continuing in some parts of the country, the roads remain busy with a total of nine million leisure trips planned during the following week from Tuesday 18th through to Sunday 23rd April.” Despite the warm and sunny weather enjoyed by many in the UK over recent days, the Met Office is forecasting a chillier Easter weekend. Since the weather could prove more changeable than in recent weeks, Mr Dennis has called on drivers to check their vehicles before setting out on long journeys. He concluded: “It takes just moments to make sure that oil and coolant are at the right levels, and it’s also a good idea to top up washer fluid to keep the windscreen clear – especially of insects if you are taking to more rural roads. “It is likely the usual main road arteries will suffer the consequences of lots of us trying to get away for the double bank holiday weekend by car. Our advice, if you can, is to head off early to beat other travellers, but to expect some jams on major routes.”

WIN TICKETS TO SEE 60s BEAT ICONS THE SEARCHERS LIVE AT CAST IN DONCASTER When the incredible beat boom of the mid sixties that saw so many bands riding on the crest of a seemingly unstoppable wave of success subsided, many simply disbanded and got on with their lives as best they could. Not The Searchers. They will be performing at Cast in Doncaster on Sunday 7th May. They stayed firmly in place, a constant unit riding out the bad times putting the twilight years of the cabaret clubs, looked on as anathema by some, to good use as they diligently honed their stage craft and upgraded the quality of their shows to please the more mature audience who had replaced the screaming teenage girls who had mobbed them in those years of chart topping glory. Such dogged determination was to stand them in good stead for the momentous nostalgia revival which was to lift them once again to national and international prominence. With a regular touring schedule of two hundred plus shows a year The Searchers seem to be both unstoppable and indestructible. They are arguably the hardest working band in showbusiness and their amazing datesheet is legendary in the music industry. Their impressive run of hits in those glory years from 1964 to 1966 was worldwide enabling them to travel the globe constantly. Sweets For My Sweet, Sugar & Spice, Needles & Pins, Don`t Throw Your Love Away, Someday We`re Gonna Love Again, When You Walk On The Room, Love Potion Number Nine, Goodbye My Love, He`s Got No Love, Take Me For What I`m Worth, Take It Or Leave It, Bumble Bee, Sweets Nothings. Have You Ever Loved Somebody, When I Get Home, What Have They Done To The Rain. They have performed for both The Queen and Princess Margaret, headlined over such Motown

luminaries as Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas and The Temptations, entertained British troops in The Falklands, Bosnia and Belfast, toured Australia and New Zealand with The Rolling Stones and strutted their stuff in front of 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium as special guests of Cliff Richard. In 2008 they found themselves back in the charts when the compilation album The Very Best Of The Searchers climbed to number eleven. It was only prevented from entering the top ten by Old Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. As recently as 2014 they appeared in Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world, to great acclaim and not for the first time. This was their third engagement in ‘Sin City’ but in fact the U.SA has played host to them constantly over the years. And on one special evening in New York they allowed Searchers afficionado Marky Ramone of the legendary punk pioneers to sit in on drums for Needles & Pins. As well as The Ramones they can count Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Byrds, Marshall Crenshaw and others as musicians who came under their influence. In fact Roger McGuinn was recently quoted as saying that without The Searchers there would have been no Byrds. The Searchers modestly venture that he was being a tad over generous in such high praise but there are many who would underline the truth of the statement. (See the quotes at the end of this article) The Searchers were founded by guitarist John McNally (he started the outfit like so many other kids of the day as a skiffle group in the late fifties) and along with bassist/front man Frank Allen who left hit-making band Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers to replace Tony Jackson on August 3rd 1964

they still maintain the heritage and reputation of the band which today is almost regarded as a national treasure. There have of course been changes in the line-up. The distinctive jangle of the twelve string guitar remains a most important feature of their sound and those rich and vibrant harmonies still embellish the songs that have provided a soundtrack to the lives of so many. The eternal popularity of this legendary group ensures that the demand for concerts is always there but the real reason for maintaining that

exhausting work rate is the best reason of all. They truly love what they do. The Searchers return to Cast on Sunday 7 May, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £20 available from castindoncaster.com or on 01302 303 959.

THE SEASIDERS ARE BACK IN SKEGNESS

The Seasiders are back! Rocky, Shelly, Candy, Pierre, Sandy, Salty, Milly and Rolly are once again coasting the roads of Skegness. Open topped, and holiday themed, they are a fun way to travel between Skegness, Butlins, Fantasy Island and Ingoldmells. Running everyday from Easter, throughout the summer until October. Seasider tickets start from £1 for children (after 9am when accompanied by a fare paying passenger) and £2.30 for adults. Dayriders are £4.20 all day, or take the whole family (2 adults, 3 children) for just £11.

Stagecoach also offers unlimited travel for the whole week for just £14. To add to the fun children can pick up a free character badge from the driver each time they travel. Collect six different badges, take them to the Stagecoach Travel shop at the Interchange on Richmond Drive, and you could be in with a chance of winning the end of season prize. Everyone who enters will receive a Skegness Seasiders goody bag. To make it an unforgettable trip, souvenirs are available to buy from the Skegness Interchange

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

First of all, this week, I think it only polite to congratulate the team behind The Northern Angling Show on a job well done. I intended only to ‘pop in’ on the first day, but found an event so huge, and so well organised, that despite staying for over five hours, I still didn’t get to talk to everyone I needed to, nor see all I wanted to see, as there was just too much to look at! I did pick up some bargains, and I also noted that many other anglers were returning to the car parks with huge amounts of discounted tackle under their arm, and all with smiles to show for it; the mark of a successful show. It’s great to find that this event is going from strength to strength, and that after years of suggesting that the trade has no interest in the north, that most of the big hitters were on hand, and anglers could get to see their wares. The team behind it, I salute you! I had a discussion with a respected head bailiff about the hazards of ‘fixed rigs’, after he had found a leader, complete with fixed swivel and lead clip, stuck fast in a tree, and one which he had had to get the boat out to retrieve. The item in question had several yards of line attached, and a lead, pinched firmly into the lead clip with sufficient friction to stay there despite the unfortunate angler pulling for the break. I don’t like the fixed type leaders, I don’t see the need for them, and if I were to put my neck on the block, I would suggest that they are cleverly marketed by certain companies, with the sole aim of encouraging anglers to dump the lead (no matter what the situation) in order to secure replacement sales….and that’s it. Don’t get me wrong, if zig fishing, or in heavy weed, then I will consider occasionally dropping a lead, but I, like many other anglers I know, see the requirement to discharge the lead on every take, as nothing more than a ‘carpy fad’ promulgated by manufacturers to increase sales. You may disagree, and of course I respect that, but I can honestly say that I’ve never found the necessity to dump tackle because ‘celebrity’ anglers tell me to, nor have I lost fish as a result (in my opinion) As I packed up this week, having caught half a dozen double figure carp (using the same lead) I happened upon another angler so stopped for a chat. He was fishing the margins, right under the rod tip, and as we pondered, his alarm screamed a warning as a nice carp shot off across the lake. As I observed, I saw what I thought was a flying back lead at the top of his leader, and thought little of it until the fish was safely netted. Looking a little more closely however, it became apparent that his leader was of the type previously mentioned, the swivel firmly welded

into the hybrid lead clip, but horrifyingly, the angler had also attached a swivel at the other end, looped into the end loop of the leader! Not only that, but attached to his mainline, was another swivel, this time of the ‘quick change’ variety, with a rubber bead firmly pushed on from above, onto which he HOOKED the other swivel to facilitate a change in rig, before pushing the bead down to ensure they didn’t part! A piece of imitation corn completed the rig… I politely suggested that the rig might be considered unsafe, and explained that in the event of a failure of the mainline, the fish would be towing the lot around the lake, and that the rig, baited as it was, would remain ‘live’ to both fish and birdlife. To be fair, he listened as I suggested improvements. The lead was firmly trapped by the tail rubber which was jammed in place, the lead clip hadn’t been trimmed nor moistened, and, with the addition of two swivels, the fish would in effect be hauling a weed brake around, rendering the whole contraption a ‘death rig’. I was dismayed that the angler, who was certainly of mature years, and appeared to be a fan of top brands, saw little wrong with the set up until advised, but was also of the opinion that it was deemed acceptable to fish with. In today’s modern age, where the ‘Tinterweb’ gives accessibility to almost every bit of information an angler could require, the manufacturers foist ‘instructive’ DVD after DVD upon customers, and everyone writes a blog, or posts video, there is really NO EXCUSE for such dangerous angling. Understandably, the angler did not want me to photograph his rig for purposes of enlightenment, so I’ve attempted to reconstruct it for your perusal, but suffice to say, had a bailiff found it, he would have had his ticket removed, and been asked to leave. As it was, with guidance, he changed his outlook (and the rig) and continued fishing safely. Personally, I have no problem with being asked for a rig check, and although I know I fish safely, my point this week is this; not everyone is as experienced as you may be, and sadly, rig checks are still a requirement to protect the investment any fishery owner has made, so help out. Help your fellow angler too, after all, by ensuring they fish safely, you are helping to maintain the health of your fishery; no-one wants to go and remove a big fish, rotting in the reeds after becoming tethered on a poor rig, so do your bit too! You don’t have to be bossy, but a polite word, and a little assistance, goes a long way towards protecting both fish and birdlife, and you never know, one day you may catch that 40lb carp that is still swimming because anglers like you have been using safe rigs!

DEFEAT HARD TO TAKE Rotherham United manager Paul Warne was again left frustrated as the Millers were denied a point in injury time after a 3-2 defeat at the DW Stadium. Having led twice at relegation-threatened Wigan, the Millers conceded late in controversial circumstances after Nick Powell drilled home a free-kick to win it for the Latics. The free-kick was given after ‘keeper Lewis Price tussled with Powell after he cleared down-field out of his hands. Warne, like many in the stadium missed the incident after he followed the ball, and admitted that it was an episiode that was tough to take after his side had again showed more than enough to deserve something from the game.

“I don’t think that anyone has seen anything like it,” Warne told the media after the game. “It is hard for me to comment on but I think that there was only about 40 seconds left on the clock, and although I wanted to win the game I was happy to take an away draw just to stop the rot. “Pricey kicked the ball, I know that there was some physical contact before he went to kick it. He kicked it and if I am honest my eyes just followed the ball. I was actually appealing for a free-kick at the other end because Jonson Clarke-Harris had taken a hit. “It was hugely disappointing because again I thought that the lads gave me everything that they had, but we have come up short. I think at worst we deserved a draw.” The Millers had taken the lead through Danny

FERGUSON’S TACTICAL MASTERCLASS Manager Darren Ferguson believes a change in formation gave his side all three points against Mansfield Town. Rovers secured promotion to Sky Bet League One after a 74th minute header from Tommy Rowe sent Ferguson men back to the third tier of English football at the first attempt. “All week we had worked on playing the diamond formation for 10 minutes and then changing to three at the back because we knew it would cause them problems,” he said. “We worked hard on a system in training, we wanted to play forward in the first half and stop them from pressing us, but once we went to three at the back we had control of the

Ward before being pegged back by Gabriel Obertan’s leveller. Warne’s side re-took the lead through Anthony Forde’s long range strike, but Alex Gilbey levelled for the second time after the Millers missed opportunities. “Our away form this season has been disappointing but today I thought that we were set up right, we came here with a confident setup by playing two up, we had a game plan and it was working quite well,” he added. “Wardy could have scored early on, but then we got the goal which was a good bit of play. I honestly thought that if we could have gone in 1-0 up at half-time, we would have been pretty comfortable. “We conceded a counter-attack goal and regrettably we have conceded a few of them. We took the lead again. We were a little fortuitous with the shot, with the ‘keeper and I thought that we would go on and score again. “The ‘keeper made a great save from Carlton’s (Morris) header, and then Wardy had a really good chance and we also had good patterns of play. They broke and got another goal and what happened in the 97th minute, which is a first, was very frustrating.”

LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

It was another busy week in the County Senior League this week, with games 26 games taking place across three separate days. Premier Division It was a magnificent week for AFC Penistone Church, as they racked up three victories in six days. They started the week with a 3-1 away win against Denaby United. Just 48 hours they impressively beat mid-table Jubilee Sports 5-1, also away from home. They then topped off the week with a 6-0 win over Denaby Main, helped by a Tim Council hat-trick. Penistone are up to third and still have a chance of second place three games to play. They also have the S&HCFA Association Cup Final to look forward to next week against Dodworth Miners Welfare FC. Second placed defending champions Frecheville were held to a 1-1 draw on Saturday against fellow high-flyers Swinton Athletic at Mexborough Athletic Ground. This gave Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves the chance over the week to climb into third position. They took that opportunity, recording backto-back wins. Firstly, they were 3-1 winners at the Look Local Stadium against Athersley Recreation Reserves on Wednesday night. They followed those three points, with three more, after a 2-0 away win against Houghton Main. Houghton Main had won 4-0 against Millmoor Juniors four days earlier. Handsworth Parramore Reserves extended their unbeaten run to four games on Saturday with a 4-0 win over Wombwell Main at the Rockingham Community Centre. Division One Grimethorpe Sports went top of the Division One table on Wednesday night, after they beat Caribbean Sports 5-3 at the Caribbean Sports Club. They could only a register a point on Saturday though, as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home against mid-table High Green Villa. On Monday Alex Torr scored four times to inspire Oughtibridge WMFC to a 5-0 home win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. They followed that up on the weekend with a 2-0 home win over second placed South Kirkby Colliery. The six points take Oughtibridge into third, just three points off the led, but they do only have one game remaining, Grimethorpe have three. AFC Dronfield completed their final fixture of the season in style, with a 4-2 home victory against Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Hemsworth slipped to their fourth consecutive loss on Saturday, as they lost 2-1 at home to Brinsworth Whitehill. Davy FC drew twice over the week. Firstly, they drew 2-2 at home against the aforementioned Brinsworth and on the weekend they drew 1-1 with Sheffield Bankers at the Hillsborough Park Arena. Division Two North After many weeks of chasing Stocksbridge Park Steels Development, the hard-work paid off for Dodworth Miners Welfare FC, as they took top spot and the Division Two North title. They did so in style too. On Wednesday night a Sam Severn hat-trick inspired them to a 5-0 away win over fifth placed FC Graceholme. They followed that on Saturday with a 4-0 win against Working Wonders at Dodworth Miners Welfare. Next up for Dodworth is the S&HCFA Association Cup final as they go in search of a double. Third placed Hepworth United stretched their unbeaten run to eight games (back to November 2016), with a comfortable 5-0 away win against Wombwell Main Development. Second bottom Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development followed up last week’s win over Working Winders, with a 2-2 draw at home against Bawtry Town. Division Two South Division Two South champions elect Sheffield Medics had mixed fortunes this week. Midweek they beat Renishaw Rangers 7-3 in a thriller at Clowne College. For the fourth consecutive game the Medics had scored seven or more goals. However, they slipped first defeat since January on the Saturday, as they lost 1-0 to Maltby Main Reserves at Muglet Lane. Elsewhere, second placed Caribbean Sports Reserves beat Sheffield Lane Top 1-0 at the Civil Service Ground.

WILDER ‘EMOTIONAL’ AFTER PROMOTION VICTORY Chris Wilder was visibly ‘emotional’ after the Blades secured promotion back to the Championship at the weekend. But having gathered his thoughts, he looked back on Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Northampton Town at Sixfields with a beaming smile on his face. Second-half goals from Leon Clarke and John Fleck saw United beat

the Cobblers to win automatic promotion in style and the Blades boss remarked: “It is incredible, simply incredible and life changing. “I’m emotional about it all, we have all put our heart and soul into this club and we’ve got a group of special players who deserve to go down in history. “What league it is doesn’t matter, this

is a special group of players who have handled the pressure and expectation and done everything needed to win promotion. “Everyone in the game has expected us to turn up and win every week and we’ve done it consistently well throughout the season to get to this moment. “I’m so proud of everyone connected to the club and we should

picking up the Sky Bet League One Player of the Season. He beat team-mate John Fleck and Scunthorpe’s Josh Morris, who was also nominated. Sharp said: “I am a very happy man. We did the hardest part yesterday winning promotion and that was our aim at the start of the season. “To win the Player of the

Season Award is very nice. You cannot win these types of awards without your team mates. The manager and the team have shown a lot of belief in me this season.” Sharp was also named in the EFL team of the season, which was made up of all three EFL divisions.

It has been some weekend for skipper Billy Sharp. After clinching promotion on Saturday, Sharp was honoured at the 2017 EFL Awards, a star-studded evening at the Hilton Park Lane in central London on Sunday. Over 650 guests were in attendance as the 2017 EFL Awards celebrated the unique successes of a remarkable year across all three divisions of the EFL. Sharp continued his celebrations by

be thankful for this group of players and what they’ve achieved.” Reflecting further, Wilder added: “The whole season, the character, desire and determination, was summed up in one game. We weren’t great first-half, Northampton deservedly got their noses it front and we

knew we had it all to do. “But second-half we stepped it up to an incredible level, we went for the jugular and regardless of what was happening elsewhere we wanted to win the game and that’s what we did to go up in fitting circumstances. “This is a tough division, this club has seen that

over the last six seasons and Saturday was a big game for Northampton too. They wanted to beat us and did everything in their power to do so. “But we’ve overcome so many hurdles, we’ve handled the setbacks and this group of players and staff have never looked like bottling it.”

BLADES U23S DOWN OWLS Goals from Tyler Smith and Regan Slater saw United beat Steel City rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Middlewood Road on Monday afternoon. The Blades scored

in each half to return to winning ways to enhance prospects of a top-two finish and also deny the Owls claiming the Professional Development League 2 title. United were quick to seize the initiative and took the lead in just the third minute. A short free-kick on the right ended with Brooks crossing to the back post and from Graham’s header across goal SMITH nodded home from close-range. The hosts, who included Lewis McGugan and Liam Palmer in their team, tried to find a way back into the contest before the break, but goalscoring opportunities were at a premium. Wednesday were on the front foot immediately after the restart with Thorniley curling a left-footed effort inches wide. But just after the hour, after Hirst had

missed for the Owls, United doubled their advantage. Smith found himself in behind the home defence and he held the ball up perfectly before playing it into the path of the onrushing SLATER, who fired home first time from the edge of the penalty area. The home side chased the game thereafter, with Eastwood showing his agility to deny substitute Preston and despite a late header from O’GRADY from Stobbs’s cross, the Blades held on for a deserved victory. Blades: Eastwood; Bennett, Graham, Cantrill, Kelly; Smith (Hallam 76), Reed, Slater, Mallon (Gilmour 54), Brooks (Charlesworth 86), Hirst. Unused: Warhurst, Doherty.

IMPROVING THE QUALITY Carlos Carvalhal believes Wednesday made good use of the recent international break, bringing key players back into the equation and improving the quality in the process. Since then, the Owls have posted seven points from a possible nine and produced one of their performances of the season against Newcastle on Saturday.

Currently occupying sixth spot, with high confidence and expectations for the final five games of the season, the head coach said: “You know what I said before the Barnsley game after the break, we had wishes to improve the quality and to bring players in to link the game. “After Rotherham, we win 2-0 and in that moment, we believed our

quality of play would improve again. “We had expectations to be nearer our high standards because we needed this level to achieve points against Newcastle. “Even with the players that felt problems during the game, like Gary Hooper because he hasn’t played for almost four months and some other players who had been out of the

2016/17

team also, they were all fantastic. “The links are inside the team, everybody is important but we need links in the team and now the quality is better. “We win more confidence and this is a good signal for the future because these players will be more fit, they will play more, they will be with more tempo. “We will continue to be stronger for sure.”

A FANTASTIC ENVIRONMENT Carlos Carvalhal says the Hillsborough environment was key in the Owls’ victory over Newcastle on Saturday evening. As Wednesday posted a significant 2-1 victory

over the Magpies, the stadium was bouncing in the early evening sunshine and the head coach has praised the fans for their part in the win. Tom Lees and Steven

Fletcher were on target for the hosts to spark superb scenes of celebration and Carlos said: “The fans did absolutely fantastic, we felt the presence of them and

this makes a massive difference. “I hope this kind of environment can stay in the future because we need it to win games, absolutely sure.” Delighted with the win in front of the Sky Sports cameras, Carlos feels Wednesday can get better and continue improving during the Championship run-in. He added: “This is the football I like, a more connected game, having more of the ball, we had a good reaction when we lost the possession, created chances, scored goals – it’s the football that I like.

35

“We will try to do better and better. Even though we played very well against Newcastle, I think we can do better in

the future and improve the team.

“Together, like this, we will win more games.”
