TOWN PREPARES FOR DELICIOUS DONCASTER FOOD FESTIVAL Food and drink lovers are preparing their taste buds for a treat thanks to next month’s ‘Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink Festival. Taking place in Doncaster town centre over three days from Friday 12th May to Sunday 14th May, the festival will feature entertainment, activities and over 50 providers of hot street food and artisan products.
From Russian cuisine to flavoured gins and everything in between, Delicious Doncaster will have all tastes covered. Multi-Michelin star award winning TV chef JeanChristophe Novelli will also be making an appearance on Sunday as one of the exciting star attractions of the festival. On the Friday of the festival, alongside the unique variety of food and drink
on offer, Doncaster College students will be fronting the demonstration kitchen on the Market Square. They’ll be focusing on family friendly recipes and healthy options, particularly based around a theme of ‘Fish Friday’. Children will also be able to get involved in some cake decorating and for any budding Mary Berry’s and Paul Hollywood’s there’ll
be a competition to find Doncaster’s star baker. On Saturday, as well as being able to enjoy the wide range of food and drink on offer, visitors can take in some live music and dance thanks to the Doncaster Folk Festival. ‘The Teenage Market’ will also give young local entrepreneurs and performers a stage to showcase their talent on the Market
Square. As well as the cooking demonstrations from the multiaward winning chef Jean-Christophe Novelli, the Sunday of the festival will become ‘Slow Down Sunday’. Along with the opportunity to sit back and relax with some good food and drink, there’ll be workshops, original entertainment and a look at subjects such as urban growing and
foraging, offering a different dimension to the festival. Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink
Festival will run from 10am-6pm on Friday and Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday and more
details will appear on the Doncaster Tourism Website on the day’s events shortly.
IS THE FUTURE OF YOUR CLUB SECURE? ARE YOU MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR CLUB? IS YOUR CLUB PROFITABLE? HOW CAN YOU MAKE POSITIVE CHANGES TO YOUR CLUB? WHAT CHANGES CAN YOU MAKE TO YOUR CLUB TO MAKE IT BETTER? Dear Secretary & Committee I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. I work with many clubs throughout the UK. Clubs will contact me (mainly on recommendation from other clubs) to discuss various different ideas they may have regarding the future of their club. As you know, recent years has seen a massive increase in the number of clubs having to close their doors and more often than not it’s because they left it too late to ask for advice. The smoking ban in particular brought about a rapid decline in trade together with massive overheads and brewery loans. I have been to clubs where they are even struggling to form a committee when once upon a time it was a privilege to be a committee member. My work involves assisting clubs who are financially challenged and clubs who are thriving. There are so many areas I can help with and I have a proven track record with impeccable testimonials from lots of clubs I have assisted in the past. If you think your club could benefit from some sound advice then call me today for a confidential no obligation chat on 07508 426 868. I look forward to hearing from you and don’t forget, there are solutions to every problem! Kind regards Yvette Langton YNL LTD ynlangton@gmail.com Tel: 07508 426 868

NEW SPORTING MEMORIES GROUP SET FOR KICK OFF Two new sporting memories groups are starting in Sheffield to help older people share memories and forge new friendships. Run by volunteers, with support from library staff, the groups talk about all types of sport, looking at old photographs, newspaper articles and memorabilia. All sports fans over the age of 50 are able to attend and the groups are free. They will run from Manor Library every Wednesday from 10.30am to noon and from Firth Park every Wednesday from 3pm to
4.30pm, both starting on 26 April. The two groups join six others running in libraries across the city. John Longstaff, aged 68, has been going to the Crystal Peaks sporting memories group since it first started in 2015. He said: “Twenty of us men meet every Tuesday morning in the library and talk about all kinds of sport. We have quizzes, guest speakers and occasional outings. “It’s transformed my life and makes me feel useful. Gives me something to look forward to and share. The humour, banter and camaraderie are brilliant.
Ongoing friendships have been made. There’s more to life than four walls and daytime telly.” Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Libraries at Sheffield City Council, said: “These groups are a great way for people to come together and talk about the sport they love and share their memories. “They join a long list of groups running from Sheffield libraries, which help people socialise and do something they enjoy for free. And of course, this helps combat loneliness and isolation,
which often affects older people in particular. “I hope people enjoy the new groups at Manor and Firth Park libraries. There’s definitely a lot to talk about in terms of Sheffield’s sporting past – and obviously the Blades’ promotion and hopefully the Owls, Tour de France legacy and the World Snooker’s 40th anniversary means they’ll be more to talk about for years to come.” Sporting Memories – who worked with Sheffield City Council to set up the groups – has been shortlisted in the Best Sports Charity, Community
and CSR category of the prestigious Sports Business Awards 2017. The World’s first charity devoted to sports reminiscence will head to London on 2nd June for the ceremony. The judging panel for the awards includes Olympians such as Sir Steve Redgrave, Steve Cram, Amy Williams & Steve Backley, who were joined by the Chief Executives of major national sporting bodies

ALBERT SNODGRASS Cadbury’s have just donated a giant chocolate bar to the Bank of England. It’s a massive Boost for the economy. Police are looking for a mugger who threatens his victims with a lit match.. They need to catch him before he strikes again. I said to a girl “You’re going through the 7 stages of love.” She replied “You disgust me. I don’t even know you.” “Stage One: Denial” Doctor: I’ve got good news, and bad news Patient: What’s the good news? Doctor: They’re gonna name a disease after you. I sat next to an insurance salesmen at a Robbie Williams gig last night. And through it all, he offered me protection... The only time politicians tell the truth is when they call each other liars. Don’t be ashamed of who you are. That’s your parents’ job. What’s the difference between a joke and a hot girl? Sometimes I get the joke. I got a new job with the Samaritans last week. I tried to phone in sick this morning but they talked me out of it! My dad always said “The first rule of theatre is to always leave them wanting more”, Great bloke.. terrible anaesthetist. My mate Marc was renowned for ‘thinking outside the box’. Great guy... rubbish goalkeeper. Son: “Dad, what’s a drunk?” Dad: “Do you see those four trees? Well, a drunk would see eight.” Son: “But Dad, I only see two.”

This week presents an opportunity to get greater clarity about your hopes around key involvements. What’s essential is that the balance between what you want and are prepared to give, and those things that you need to nurture you, are not too far out of kilter Libra. Call for more news and advice...
The Sun, in your sign, is squared by the Moon this week, suggesting somebody close may not be completely convinced by some of your plans. Might they have a point? With Jupiter squaring Neptune, with any scheme which is shooting for the stars, you must keep one foot on the floor. Call for more...
However hard you try to make a good impression, this week’s Quarter Moon suggests that someone influential may take some convincing. Rather than investing too much time in this, you might want to look more towards your own situation and how you can steer it. Call for more astral advice...
Your ruling planet goes direct mid-week and this could see an issue around a friendship or long-term plan require resolution. Also, there is a tricky Quarter Moon this week which can still see people experiencing cross wires when it comes to communications. Call for more advice...
You may encounter someone this week who really captures your imagination. But, there may be something about this person that borders on the unfathomable. Much as this could add to their mystique, the Sun continues to ask you to be as down-to-earth as possible. Call for more news...
Your connection to someone in the know or who is influential, can seem to be revived this week. But there is a swirling mist of unreality circling around the heavens, and also the potential for some surprise switches of plan, either by you or by someone you’re associated with. Call for more...
Some kind of get-together or reunion can be staged at your residency. With Jupiter forging an obtuse tie and Mars a sharp angle to Neptune, when it comes to your professional aspirations Capricorn, ensure that you do some extensive research in preparation. Call for more news and advice...
The Quarter Moon in Leo this week, cautions you to ensure that the goals and ambitions that you’re working towards at the moment actually do reflect your deepest desires, rather than being caught up in the expectations of those around you. Any spontaneity can thrill you. Call for more...
Someone around you may require a particularly supportive and sensitive approach. The chances are though, that you may have been more concerned with your own situation. Still, dialogue can increase and you may be able to inject some bright ideas into this Aquarius. Call for more advice...
Your closest connections with others, be it on a personal level or even more business-wise, come very much sharply into focus. Whilst there has been part of you that’s been desirous of change, it’s the depth of these involvements which really can resonate upon you. Call for more advice...
Jupiter and Neptune can give you a tremendous sensitivity and often spiritual appreciation. But when they forge more negative planetary angles they can create an altered reality. Work hard on checking out facts and figures to counter this. Positive financial news can emerge. Call for more...

The charming influence of Venus has returned to your sign but is forging two testing angles this week. Wortley Hall is looking to expand our team and are recruiting for the following:
I wanted to tell you Andy and Tracy’s story ‘We’ve been fostering for 8 years now. It hasn’t always been easy, we’ve had ups and downs. We’ve supported children in different ways from teaching them the basics to supporting them in accessing school. We’ve had lots of different types of placement from moving children onto adoption which surprisingly we enjoyed thoroughly, seeing a child be placed with a long term fostering family. Andy enjoyed supporting teenagers go onto independence, we still have them over for Christmas, even after they left 5 years ago!’ ‘Our friends foster too, but they provide respite care. They’ll care for children one weekend a month and maybe a week over Summer for carers who need a break’. ‘As we work for an agency we’ll get referrals for different children from all ages and of different needs from varied localities and we discuss with our social worker which children we feel would fit best with our family’. ‘We didn’t think we could foster as we are in our 50s but we love it and very glad we applied’… I’m Amy the Senior Social Worker at Tree House Care and I work within recruitment,
we’ve received an increasing number of referrals for children who need foster carers and we are recruiting in the area for full time and weekend foster carers. We treat our carers as professionals and provide in-depth bespoke training packages and a competitive allowance. If you feel that fostering could be for you please contact Amy. We’re holding a drop in session to meet anyone interested in fostering at Maltby Library on 23rd May from 1pm until 3pm. We’d love to meet you and answer any questions you might have.

SPECTATORS URGED TO PLAN AHEAD FOR THIS WEEKEND’S TOUR DE YORKSHIRE Details of upcoming traffic and travel changes have been released, as the region gears up to welcome the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race for the third time. Stage 3 of the Tour de Yorkshire is due to ride through South Yorkshire on Sunday 30 April, starting in Crow Edge before taking in Millhouse Green, Thurlstone, Penistone, Oxspring, Thurgoland, Wortley, Green Moor, Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Bolsterstone, Wigtwizzle, and Midhopestones, finishing at Fox Valley in Sheffield. Residents and businesses in Sheffield and Barnsley are being encouraged to plan race day journeys in advance, as road closures for the race will result in changes to some bus services. Road closures are needed to allow the route to be prepared, infrastructure to be put in place, the Tour’s vehicles and cyclists to pass through the stage, and the safe dispersal of spectators and infrastructure after the race. To help customers plan their race day journey, Travel South Yorkshire has created a dedicated webpage for the event, which includes details of road closures
across the region, timetables of affected bus services and ways to keep up to date with the latest travel news, at travelsouthyorkshire.com/tour-de-yorkshire. Stephen Edwards, SYPTE Executive Director, said: “The Tour de Yorkshire is a fantastic event for our region. Together with our partners, we are working hard to ensure that it is as easy as possible for spectators to travel to watch the race on 30 April. “Details regarding road closures and public transport provisions on the day are now available to view at travelsouthyorkshire.com, and we are encouraging our customers to check for changes to their regular journeys and plan their race day route in advance.” Spectators planning on taking their bike on the train should check with the train operating company beforehand as capacity for bicycles in limited. Unfortunately cycles are not permitted on South Yorkshire’s buses and trams. More travel information on the event can be found at travelsouthyorkshire.com/tour-de-yorkshire Live public transport service updates will be available on 30 April on Twitter @TSYalerts.

BIG SCREEN FILMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
OBITUARY FOR POPULAR CLUBLAND PERSONALITY Roy Barry Wallis (Sandy) Born 3rd October 1933 • Died 5th April 2017 Sheffield has been blessed by some wonderful entertainers and Sandy, as he was known to friends, was right up there amongst the very best of them. Barry, as he was known to his family, was born on 3rd October 1933 Sheffield and he was the youngest of 8 children. When he left school, he worked in steel erecting for his father. He was then called up for his National service and he played clarinet for the Royal Lincolnshire Regimental band. He achieved great success as leader of the Blue Harmony Boys and they played American bases in Germany and throughout Europe, famously performing at the former mountain retreat of Adolf Hitler at Berchtesgaden. This was also the start of his lifelong partnership with Ken who was the singer in the group. After the Blue Harmony Boys the partnership with Ken continued as they moved to the North East performing on clubs as the duo ‘Ken and Sandy.’ Their next venture was running a number of betting shops in the Sunderland area and following that they opened a B & B (Sands Guest House) in the Whitburn area of Sunderland. Looking for yet another new venture they moved back to Sheffield and bought and ran a chip shop at Park Hill and moved to their house on Halifax Road. Barry did the food preparation upstairs whilst Ken was at the counter dealing with the public. Barry and Ken always went to the Greyhound Dog track at Owlerton, Barry studying form and Ken choosing from his lucky numbers (Ken often appearing to have more success!) They also went to Wadsley Bridge Club and they both enjoyed playing bingo and passing comment on the ‘turn.’
Over the years Barry became great friends with many of the South Yorkshire entertainers such as The Discos, Lynne PErry, Paul Shane and the late, great Tony White. He was also a friends to well-known Sheffield agent Keith Chapman. For those of us lucky enough to spend time in his company it was always an entertaining and positive experience however there was a serious side to him too and he was a deep thinker and student of philosophy. The light shone very bright within Barry and it shone on those around him. He is survived by his brother Eric and he will be missed, not only by his nephew Tom Heritage and his wife Fiona who were very close to him but everyone that knew him. We also remember his beloved sister Margaret. It really is the end of an era. Barry’s funeral service is at Grenoside Crematorium at 10:45am on Thursday the 27th.

MERCURY M T RS THE MERCURYCLASSIFIEDS TO ADVERTISE ON MERCURY MOTORS PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH JOHN TURTON ON TEL: 0114 276 3633 EMAIL: john@mercurynewspaper.co.uk
MOTORISTS FACE TOUGHER SPEEDING PENALTIES Drivers who excessively break the speed limit will face tougher penalties from last week, with the RAC welcoming the move. Across England and Wales, those who drive at 51mph in a 30mph zone, or at 101mph on a motorway, will see financial penalties start at 150% of their weekly income from now on – rather than 100%. According to the Sentencing Council, today’s rise aims to provide a “clear increase in fine level as the seriousness of offending increases”. It follows suggestions that the previous system did not recognise the heightened danger which drivers pose as their speed climbs above the legal limit. Recent data has indicated that in 2015, a total of 244 people were killed in crashes involving drivers who were breaking the speed limit. Despite this week’s changes, the maximum fines which drivers can be hit with remain the same. This means they cannot be given a fine above £1,000 unless the offence takes place on a motorway, where the limit is £2,500.
MOTOR MATES Motor Vehicle Servicing & Repairs All other makes welcome Air-Con Service Checks
SURFACING
Motoring groups have voiced their approval for the tougher fines, with the RAC among them. RAC road safety spokesman Pete Williams said: “We welcome the change in sentencing guidelines for gross speeders. Anyone who breaks the limit excessively is a danger to every other road user and is unnecessarily putting lives at risk. “Hopefully, hitting these offenders harder in the pocket will make them think twice before doing it again in the future. But tougher penalties are only effective in changing behaviour or increasing compliance if drivers genuinely believe that they are likely to be caught and prosecuted for breaking the law.”

I’m still struggling to find out why… In I’m still finding my feet here though, and this part of the world, warm, overcast days, despite a plethora of well intentioned advice, have been followed by cold, clear nights, I often fall back on tried and trusted methods; and although the water is getting warmer, after all, other anglers only ever tell you what varied cool winds, and drastic changes of air they have caught on last, not what they have temperature are not helping in my opinion. tried and failed with don’t they? The Window Centre Tigers riders are part of a star-studded lineup chasing a place in the showpiece British Final at Belle Vue on June 19. Edward Kennett and Lewis Bridger are also amongst those involved along with ex-Sheffield riders Josh Auty, Adam Roynon and Simon Lambert. Co-promoter Damien Bates admits they “couldn’t have asked for a better line-up” – and he is expecting fireworks when some of Britain’s best head to Yorkshire. Bates said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the British Semi-Final again, and we couldn’t have asked for a better line-up than the one that has been drawn really. “We’ve got plenty of current and former Sheffield riders, local interest from Scunthorpe then some
huge names with Chris Harris, Scott Nicholls, Craig Cook and Eddie Kennett. “It’ll be hard for our three boys with that line-up, but that’s what it’s all about and to reach the British Final they’ll need to be at their best. “Josh and Kyle know the best way around the track which should give them a slight advantage, and Rob Branford is more than capable on his day. “Each meeting is different, you never

WARNE HAPPY WITH WIN Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne reflected on his side’s 1-0 win over Ipswich Town at the AESSEAL New York Stadium this afternoon. A fairly entertaining encounter between two teams with nothing to play for except pride was won by the Millers thanks to Tom Adeyemi’s fairly late strike. Speaking to the press, Warne said: “I’m obviously pleased it was a victory. It’s nice to have a first penalty of the season which almost got a Mexican wave in the New York! Then to miss it was a massive blow. It affected the lads massively in the first half. They weren’t as energetic or as dynamic as I wanted. I told them at half time and I thought, second half, they were a lot better. “We created good chances and I’m pleased to get a clean sheet and a win. It means a lot to a lot of people, including myself. “I understand how the fans want to play
football here. With the short corner, we wanted to try something different because we haven’t scored many off corners and they had more of a physical presence than we did. “We kept the ball which is good play. We went back to the half-way line and then back in where we scored, which is quite ironic!” The Millers boss had particular praise for the match-winner, Tom Adeyemi, who smashed home the winner with 10 minutes to play. “Him (Adeyemi) and Frecks are the same,” continued Warne. “We’ve missed both of them on occasions. He’s had a big impact and what I did notice today was what we are missing. I’m pleased for Tom because he’s always trying to get goal-scoring opportunities and I thought he was going to get one in the first half. It was a great strike and with him being a Norwich fan, scoring against Ipswich will mean even more. “I spoke to the lads after the game and told them I was happy with the result. I think we’ve

and Richard Wood finishing as runners-up. Jerry Yates’ development this season has seen him break into the first team fold, scoring his first league goal for the club in the home win over Norwich City, in addition to getting his name on the scoresheet in the EFL Cup meeting with Morecambe. His form in 2016/17 saw him claim the Cascade Drainage Young Player of the Year award on Saturday night. As ever, the guests in attendance put their fingers on the buzzers to decide who would take home the Goal of the Season trophy by an interactive vote. Strikes from Joe Newell at QPR and Fulham and Danny Ward against Birmingham City were amongst the contenders, but it was midfielder Will Vaulks who claimed the prize sponsored by Heineken, for his stunning opening day strike against Wolverhampton Wanderers. After another successful year for the club in the community, which resulted in the RUCST claiming the regional Community Club of the Year award for a second year running, there were a number of candidates for the Community Player of the Year Award. However, it was club captain Lee Frecklington that scooped the trophy on Saturday night.
Rotherham United hosted the 2016/17 Season Dinner at AESSEAL New York Stadium on Saturday which saw the end of season awards handed out, as supporters, players and staff came together in the lounge following the home game with Ipswich Town. Club Chairman Tony Stewart and manager Paul Warne spoke in front of the gathered sponsors and supporters before awards including the Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Goal of the Season were handed out. The Millers’ leading goalscorer Danny Ward picked up the main prize as he was crowned the club’s Player of the Year sponsored by KCM Recycling. The former Huddersfield Town attacker was back on the stage later in the evening with his fellow players voting him as their choice as the Players’ Player of the Year, with Jon Taylor
FERGUSON FOCUSES ON TITLE Darren Ferguson has confidence Rovers will go on to claim the Sky Bet League Two title, despite seeing their lead at the top of the table cut to two points on Saturday. The 2-1 loss at Wycombe Wanderers allowed Plymouth Argyle to narrow the gap, but Rovers know that wins in their final two games of the season – at home to Exeter City and away at Hartlepool United – would ensure they cannot be caught. Ferguson said: “We don’t start panicking or wanting to do anything different, because there is no need. After Monday the loss is gone and we look forward to the next game. “We’ve got two games left to win the league. You would think four points would probably win it. We can’t let our standards slip, we want to have momentum going into next season.” Although disappointed with aspects of play in the defeat at Adams Park, Ferguson has told the players that if they reach the standards they
hit for most of the campaign then the title will be theirs. He added: “I don’t want to criticise too much because they have been great all season, but we don’t want to limp across the line. We want to win this league as you never know when you’re going to get another chance to win a title – I’ve never won one as a manager. “The players know the standards they’ve set themselves, they’ve been outstanding all season. It’s my job now to pick the players up and get a performance in like we’re used to seeing. “I’m still confident we’ll get the job done, but the level of performance has to be better than what we’ve seen here.”
been better in previous games and not picked up any points. It shows just how tough football is at this level. “I said a few harsh words at half time and some after the game. You’ve got to have a little bit more belief in yourself. If they’re lucky enough to be kept here, they can expect a tough pre-season and to be the fittest side in the league next year. “I’m over the moon today because we kept a clean sheet. The lads have performed really well before and not got the points they deserved.” After seeing his side’s first penalty of the season saved from Danny Ward, the striker was then substituted at half time after pulling his hamstring, to be later followed by Semi Ajayi. “Danny Ward’s injury is obvious, he’s pulled his hammy,” continued Warne. “Which, with the season he’s had an the effort he’s put in, I feel for him because he’s been injury free all year, so that’s his season done. “Ajayi tightened up as well but he wanted to carry on. He then signalled to the bench so he had to come off. “It’s bad news for Sem. I’m hopeful he’ll be all right for next week.”

The end of the season is in sight, but not before the League Cup Final which took place this week, as well as the first ever Division Two play-off semi-finals. League Cup Final Swallownest FC capped off a fine season in emphatic fashion, as they won the League Cup Final 5-1 against Brinsworth Whitehill of Division One. The win means Swallownest become only the sixth team to complete the Premier Division and League Cup double in the County Senior League (Wombwell Main have done it twice). Division Two Play-offs The Division Two Play-off’s started this week. Second placed from Division Two North played Third placed from Division Two South and vice versa, with the winners of these games playing off in the final next week. Hepworth United booked their place in the final comfortably, as they beat Swinton Athletic Reserves 5-1 at Far Lane. The other semi-final was much closer though, with Kiveton Park and Stocksbridge Park Steels Development playing-out a 2-2 draw at Kiveton Park Miners Welfare Ground after 90 minutes. Stocksbridge did get it over the line though, as they won 3-2 in extra-time. Premier Division The runner’s up spot is still up for grabs in the Premier Division. Swinton Athletic have a slight advantage going into the last game. They beat Denaby United on Saturday 4-1, with goals from Darren Walker, Tommy Needham, Enzo Guarini and Joe Dungworth. Swinton lead third placed Frecheville only because they have scored more goals. AFC Penistone Church are just a further three points back, with a game to play. Penistone’s chances were hindered a little midweek though, as were beaten 2-0 by Houghton Main at Middlecliffe Lane. Division One The Division One title race will go the distance after the games this week. On Wednesday the top two met at South Kirkby Colliery Miners Welfare Ground. South Kirkby took all three points with a hard-fought 5-2 victory over Grimethorpe Sports. Grimethorpe did reclaim top spot on Saturday though, as they beat Wickersley FC at Wickersley School. The win completes Grimethorpe’s fixtures and gives them a two point advantage. South Kirkby have one game remaining. Matt Moore scored four times, as Brinsworth Whitehill put to one aside their League Cup Final defeat midweek. Michael Cuckson was also on the score-sheet for Brinsworth, who beat Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves 5-0. KNILL’S MK VERDICT 2016/17 Alan Knill says the United management team were ‘delighted’ with Saturday’s victory over the MK Dons, a sixth consecutive maximum for the Sky Bet EFL League One champions. Leon Clarke opened the scoring at Stadium:mk before Billy Sharp added a second-half brace as United made it 16 games unbeaten to close in on 100 points. Reflecting on the success, Chris Wilder’s number two remarked: “We’re delighted with the performance and a third consecutive 3-0 win. We asked the players for a strong finish to the season and they’ve not looked like
switching off. “It was a comfortable win in the end, the goal before half-time opened the game up and that suited us. From there we controlled it superbly and we were excellent throughout.” Sharp’s double were his 200th and 201st career goals and the skipper earnt a glowing review of United’s assistant manager, who also praised his strike colleague Clarke. Knill added: “Billy has been fantastic and we’re chuffed to bits for him. He deserves all the plaudits, he has been a fantastic captain for us, a leader on and off the pitch and what a goalscoring return he’s
given us. “When he got his 200th we were delighted for him, but he didn’t let up, he quickly added 201. “It was an easy choice to make him skipper, he’s a proper Blade and he wasn’t happy when the team finished mid table last season. “He has taken it on, done his job and so much more really, he’s been absolutely brilliant. “What we’re seeing from Leon (Clarke) is the Leon I know well. He has been unfortunate with injuries, but he’s never given up and he is getting the goals his effort deserves.”
BOSS TO PLAY IN LEGENDS FIXTURE Boss Chris Wilder has confirmed he will play as part of the Blades Legends team that will face a host of television stars and celebrities to raise money for the ‘Once Upon a Smile’ charity. The Legends team will also hopefully include amongst others, former players including Paddy Kenny, Chris Morgan, Ian Bennett, Tony Agana, Carl Asaba, Rob Page, David Holdsworth, Richard Cresswell, Rob Kozluk, Paul Devlin, Leigh Bromby, Peter Beagrie, Michael Tonge, Derek Geary, Alan Wright, Chris Armstrong, Mark Todd and Glyn Hodges. Upon confirming his participation, Wilder remarked: “It’s been a fantastic season for everyone connected
to the club and I hope supporters can turn out just once more to support this fantastic charity. “I’m looking forward to playing a part in the game and the day, but I just hope supporters are expecting a Kieron Freeman type performance, I was a full-back, not a wingback!” Representing Children’s Bereavement Charity Once Upon a Smile, will be Emmerdale actors Danny Miller (who won the Best Actor at the recent British Soap Awards), Anthony Quinlan and Joe Gill, Hollyoaks stars, Ben Ryan-Davies, Cameron Moore, Ayden Callahan, Luke Jerdy, Duayne Boa and This is England’s Tommy Turgoose. The celebrity line-up will also feature Daniel
Jillings from ITV series PREY, Dean Smith from BBC’s Last Tango in Halifax, The Voice and Radio ONE presenter Cel Spellman, Jake Quickenden from The X Factor and I’m a Celebrity, Charlie Quirke from Birds of a Feather and Nico Mirallegro. As well as general admission to the ground’s South Stand, fans have the opportunity to get their hands on VIP tickets which will give them the chance to meet the players from both teams post match and watch the action from padded executive seats. The VIP package also includes a pre and post-match bar facility in the Platinum Suite. Dave McCarthy, Operations Director at Sheffield United, said:
“We’re so excited about this particular charity match as it’s not only great to see former United players come back to Bramall Lane and watch the celebrities battle it out, but it’s all for great causes. The proceeds will go towards the Once Upon a Smile charity, a Children’s Bereavement Charity who provide emotional, practical and financial support to bereaved families at their time of need. The Sheffield United Academy will also benefit from the game, as will Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids, all very worthy causes, so we hope to see lots of Blades fans there as well as fans of the TV celebrities!” Danny Miller, Captain and Co-Founder of Once Upon a Smile,
said ‘’We’re delighted to come back to Sheffield United, we were lucky enough to play here a few years ago, a game that we won, but the fans of Sheffield United who turned up did the city of Sheffield and this wonderful club proud. I’m sure you’ll agree this game is in aid of a great cause and we’re excited to see you all’’. Last year’s Blades Legends charity match saw more than 4,000 fans watch the game. Sheffield superstar Sean Bean managed the former Blades former players who beat a Fulham FC all-star celebrity team in a penalty shootout. This year’s game, which is sponsored by local company Singh’s is scheduled for Saturday 13th May, kick-off 2pm
at Bramall Lane. Stand Tickets are priced at £8 for adults and £4 for fans under 18, with a family ticket to admit two adults and two U18s costing only £20* (*not available online). For those who wish to get up close and personal with the stars, the VIP/Meet the Players Platinum Suite seats (to include a padded seat, bar facility and post-match meet & greet) are priced at £20 adults and £10 for Under 18s - please note these VIP seats are extremely limited. CHED IN TALKS TO RETURN WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
On Monday afternoon, this column was progressing nicely, an ode to the five players who have been named in the PFA League One Team Of The Year. But then, a news alert was released which has shocked and divided a fanbase united after years of torment. BBC Radio Sheffield reported that Sheffield United are set to re-sign Ched Evans from Chesterfield. The
Evans saga was all but over for Blades fans, the striker had his conviction overturned and returned to football to play in North Derbyshire. Nothing is official yet, but it looks likely that Chris Wilder will sign the 28-year-old. The fee is reported to be 500 thousand up front plus add ons. The Welshman has scored seven goals in 29 appearances this term, in his first season back in the
game. The move has expectedly created a huge debate amongst Blade fans. Some question whether the striker will be able to perform in the Championship, and that his signing could take the shine off a remarkable season. Others, including myself, trust Wilder in this transfer. Wilder’s recruitment has been excellent this season, and if he feels that Evans will add to the squad then he must be given a chance. Sunday’s fixture against our local rivals becomes
even more intriguing than it already was before. The team can finish on 100 points with a win and will lift the title, but the reaction from the Bramall Lane faithful to Evans, should he feature, adds a new dynamic to the game. Above all though, this bombshell must not take away from the squad which has delivered the most memorable of seasons, and I’m confident Jack O’Connell’s name will feature more heavily on the terraces on Sunday.

ALL ABOUT THE GROUP - BULLEN The spirit, determination and togetherness in the group helped Wednesday over the line as they came from behind to beat Derby 2-1, according to assistant manager Lee Bullen. After Darren Bent gave the visitors the lead the Owls hit back through Steven Fletcher and Gary Hooper to take the points. And Bullen heaped praise on the collective as Wednesday closed in
on a play-off finish with two games to go. He said: “This group of players is fantastic. They push each other so hard in training every day and get the best out of each other. “When it comes to the match day they are desperate to win and ready to go. “To win five games in a row in any division is an achievement but in the Championship, it’s exceptional. “We’ve seen today what they’re all about.
They’ve dug in when we went a goal behind and come back with two great goals of our own.” There were candidates aplenty for man of the match but Bullen repeated the mantra of focusing on the squad as a whole. He added: “We can talk about individual performances all day because there were some outstanding displays today. “All the way through and even in the last minute, we saw some moments
that change games. “And credit to them because this is such a hard division and that win came from the belief this group has. “But are we there yet? Absolutely not, there are two games to go and until is mathematically impossible to be caught in the top six, of course we are not there. “We have a huge game next week down at Ipswich and we will be 100% focused and absolutely prepared as always, don’t worry about that.”

KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING - FLETCHER Owls striker Steven Fletcher says he is happy with Wednesday’s momentum going into the final two games of the season following their 2-1 victory over Derby at Hillsborough. The Scottish international scored the leveller after the Rams took the lead through Darren Bent, but Gary Hooper’s first goal since his return from injury sealed three vital points for the home side. Fletcher said: “We’ve got good momentum
and we’re playing good football. “We’re scoring goals and it just shows that if we do go a goal down, we’ve got enough about us to get back in front. “We’re a good technical side with good players, so we can put on a show as well as getting the three points which is great. “We’ve always remained upbeat throughout the season, even the players who aren’t playing every week are always working really hard in training.
“The injured players we’ve had are getting back fit at the right time too, obviously Kieran
Lee played today and it was good to see him back. “There’s two more
games to go and hopefully we can get the job done on Saturday
against Ipswich to be in the play-offs.”

CHAMPIONSHIP FINALE Owls Under-23s SOLD OUT are champions! The Championship finale at Hillsborough between the Owls and Fulham has sold out. Following a week of general sale, the last batch of tickets were sold on Monday evening. The Cottagers have also sold their full allocation of 3,200 tickets, meaning the game will see the highest S6 attendance of the season. Both clubs are vying for a coveted finish in the top six and Wednesday hold a two-point advantage over Fulham with two games left to play.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Under-23s have been crowned as the Professional Development League 2 North champions. The Owls youngsters have enjoyed a terrific campaign and after battling hard at the summit for much of the season, they were confirmed as league winners on Monday evening. Following the Owls’ 2-2 draw with Leeds on Friday, Neil Thompson’s side remained at the top and could only be caught by Hull, who were five points behind with two games to play. But the Tigers slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Birmingham on Monday, meaning the Owls could celebrate a fantastic achievement as champions. Boss Neil Thompson said: “I’m really proud of the lads. They have done great all season. It’s terrific to have had such a good level of consistency this year. We have been solid defensively and not given a lot of goals away and we have managed to get the goals to win the games. “They should be really proud of themselves.” The Under-23s will now go into the end of season play-offs. As winners of the northern section, the Owls will face southern section runners-up Millwall, with home

advantage. Details of the play-off semi final will be announced in due course.
Thompson proud of champion Owls Development Squad coach Neil Thompson has poured the praise on his young charges as the Owls were crowned Professional Development League 2 champions on Monday night. Hull’s defeat against Birmingham meant the Tigers were unable to catch Wednesday at the summit. And Thompson said the players received their just reward after a consistent campaign that led to their title triumph. He said: “I’m really proud of the lads and all the staff. They have done great all season. “It is terrific to have had such a good level of consistency this year. “We have been solid defensively and not given a lot of goals away and we have managed to get the goals to win the games. “We had a little bit of an indifferent start and an iffy finish but we had a spell in the season where we got lots of wins back to back. “Credit to all the boys who have played. They should be really proud of themselves.” He added: “The players have had a long season so the break gives them a little bit of time to recharge their bodies. “We will get on to the hard work preparing for the play-offs next week. “The play-offs are a knockout competition but the lads are more than capable of doing well.” The Owls will entertain southern division winners Millwall in the play-off semi final, with details to be confirmed in due course.
